Lifts second homer
Winn went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Winn tied the game at 1-1 with his sixth-inning blast. The shortstop continues to struggle at the major-league level -- he's gone just 7-for-31 (.226) over his last 10 games, though that's an improvement on his .173 average for the season. Winn has added a .474 OPS, two homers, six RBI, eight runs scored and two stolen bases through 29 contests.

Not in Sunday's lineup
Winn is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Winn started the previous seven games and will receive a day off after going 4-for-21 during that span. Tommy Edman will shift to shortstop while Juniel Querecuto starts at the keystone Sunday.

Logs second steal
Winn went 0-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Winn reached on a fielder's choice and notched his second major-league steal in the fourth inning. It's been a rough adjustment to the majors for the rookie shortstop, who has gone 3-for-23 (.130) over six games in September. He's batting .156 with one home run, four RBI and six runs scored through his first 18 contests. While Winn is seeing a majority of the playing time at shortstop, Tommy Edman has occasionally filled in there as well.

Taking seat Friday
Winn is absent from the lineup for Friday's game in Cincinnati, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It will be the third day off for Winn since he was promoted back on Aug. 18. He has managed just a .430 OPS in his first 17 major-league games, although he did hit his first homer earlier this week. Tommy Edman will get a start at shortstop Friday.
Sep 7, 2023
Belts first big-league homer
Winn went 1-for-5 with a solo home run Wednesday against Atlanta in an 11-6 victory.
ANALYSIS
All nine offensive starters for St. Louis recorded at least one hit in the contest, and Winn's was a solo homer to left field in the sixth inning. The long ball was his first as a major-leaguer in his 16th game. Other than Wednesday's home run, it's been mostly a struggle for the 21-year-old, as he's slashing just .161/.175/.250 with a 1:13 BB:K over 58 plate appearances.

Hits bench Sunday
Winn is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tommy Edman will handle shortstop duties in the series finale after Winn manned the position in each of the past five games. While the long-term future remains bright for the 21-year-old rookie, he's gotten off to a slow start to his big-league career with a .170/.188/.213 slash line through his first 49 plate appearances for St. Louis.
Aug 27, 2023
Not in lineup Sunday
Winn is not in the lineup Sunday at Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Tommy Edman will start at shortstop and bat leadoff as Nolan Gorman covers second base and Richie Palacios patrols center field. Winn, 21, has gone 5-for-29 (.172) with zero home runs and one stolen base through his first eight major-league games.
Aug 24, 2023
Achieves two firsts Wednesday
Winn went 1-for-5 with one RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Winn checked off a couple of milestones with his first major-league RBI and steal in this contest. He's batting .217 (5-for-23) with a double over his first six major-league games while holding down the starting job at shortstop, as expected.
Aug 19, 2023
Grabs hit in debut
Winn went 1-for-4 in Friday's 7-1 loss to the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Winn started at shortstop and knocked his first hit, a single, in the fifth inning. The top prospect has looked major-league ready for much of the year after slashing .288/.259/.474 with 18 home runs, 17 stolen bases and 61 RBI over 105 games with Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals will likely do everything to preserve his rookie status, which means he cannot spend more than 45 days on the big-league roster or accrue over 130 at-bats. While Winn is likely to see the bulk of the time at shortstop, his at-bats are likely to be managed by keeping him at or near the bottom of the order for the remainder of the season.
Aug 18, 2023
Batting ninth in debut
Winn is starting at shortstop and batting ninth in his major-league debut Friday versus the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Winn is set to take over as the Cardinals' regular shortstop down the stretch after being promoted from Triple-A Memphis, where he batted .288/.359/.474 with 18 home runs, 61 RBI and 17 stolen bases over 105 games. With the 21-year-old occupying shortstop and Lars Nootbaar (abdomen) on the injured list, Tommy Edman is starting in center field Friday.
Aug 17, 2023
Called up Thursday
Winn had his contract selected by the Cardinals on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Winn will join the major-league roster with 45 days remaining in the regular season. The team's top prospect has produced a .283 batting average with 17 homers, 60 RBI, 97 runs and 17 stolen bases over 104 games with Triple-A Memphis this year. With Lars Nootbaar (abdomen) being placed on the 10-day injured list, Winn will replace him with St. Louis.
Aug 16, 2023
Back from injury
Winn (lower body) has gone 3-for-11 over three games since returning to Triple-A Memphis' lineup.
ANALYSIS
Winn was managing a mild glute strain over the last week, but he's been just fine since getting back into action after a few days off. The top prospect is slashing .284/.356/.467 with 17 home runs, 17 stolen bases, 60 RBI, 95 runs scored, 15 doubles and seven triples through 103 Triple-A games this year. It's expected he'll be called up to the majors some time before the end of the season.

Managing mild glute strain
Winn exited Sunday's game at Triple-A Memphis due to a mild glute strain, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Winn was shaken up in the sixth inning when he hit a base awkwardly, but his injury is considered mild at this point. He should be considered day-to-day for now. Winn has been dominant with the Triple-A club this year, slashing .286/.357/.470 with 17 homers, 92 runs, 59 RBI and 17 steals. However, the Cardinals may wait to call him up until mid-to-late August to preserve his rookie status for next season.

Likely late-season call-up
The Cardinals may wait to call up Winn until mid-to-late August in order to preserve his rookie status heading into the offseason, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
ANALYSIS
Winn may be ready for a promotion after batting .357/.418/.690 with nine home runs, three steals and a 12.8 percent strikeout rate over his last 29 games with Triple-A Memphis. However, by keeping Winn in the minors for another three weeks or so, they can make sure he is still eligible for Rookie of the Year in 2024 in an attempt to net a draft pick like Seattle did with Julio Rodriguez in 2022. Tommy Edman will likely be the primary shortstop for now with Paul DeJong getting dealt to Toronto.
Jul 12, 2023
Heating up at Triple-A
Winn has a .329/.385/.543 slash line with three home runs, two steals and an 11.5 percent strikeout rate in his last 70 at-bats with Triple-A Memphis.
ANALYSIS
He is still well below the International League average on the season (86 wRC+), but Winn is eight months younger than the next youngest qualified hitter in the league (Jhonkensy Noel) and four months younger than the next youngest qualified hitter at Triple-A (Tyler Soderstrom). Winn doesn't turn 22 until spring training of next year, and he projects as the Cardinals' shortstop of the future.

Opening year at Triple-A
Winn is beginning the 2023 season at Triple-A Memphis.
ANALYSIS
There was some thought that Winn might repeat Double-A for a bit, but he showed so well this spring in Cardinals camp that he's getting the boost to Triple-A just 10 days after his 21st birthday. The toolsy young shortstop slashed .333/.393/.556 with two home runs, two doubles, two triples and four stolen bases over 18 games (61 plate appearances) in the Grapefruit League. He seems certain to make his MLB debut at some point in 2023.

Looking good in spring
Winn is hitting .389 (7-for-18) with a home run, a double, three stolen bases and five runs scored through seven Grapefruit League games.
ANALYSIS
Winn's strong spring comes with the caveat that he has yet to play an inning at Triple-A and will likely begin the season with at least a brief stint at Double-A Springfield. He had a .781 OPS with 11 homers and 28 steals over 86 games at that level last season, though he took a noticeable step down from his work at High-A Peoria. Winn, a natural shortstop, is on track to contend for a major-league job in 2024. Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong figure to see most of the time there in 2023.

Sparks in 2022
Winn put together a .283/.364/.468 batting line with 12 home runs, 43 steals (on 48 attempts) and a 63:115 BB:K over 119 games across High-A and Double-A in 2022.
ANALYSIS
While he fell off a bit toward the end of the Double-A season, that's nothing to worry about, considering that Winn had never played such a long campaign before. A second-round pick in 2020, Winn has only been a full-time shortstop for two full seasons, yet his glovework has come along impressively and his arm might already be the best in the business at the position. And oh yeah, he can hit, he can run, and he's got plate discipline, too. It's not clear whether we'll see Winn in the big leagues in 2023, but 2024 could be realistic.

Showing pop, speed in Double-A
Winn is hitting .268/.345/.453 with 10 homers and 18 steals through 61 games with Double-A Springfield.
ANALYSIS
He's had significant hot and cold stretches, and Winn is actually now in the midst of a cooler one, having gone just 2-for-15 over his last four games -- which comes on the heels of an 11-game stretch in which he hit .346 with a 1.077 OPS. But as they say, speed never slumps, and Winn has remained active on the basepaths even when his bat hasn't been as effective. He's up to 33 steals now across two levels of the minors this year, which combines well with his solid plate discipline, growing power and cannon arm at shortstop to make Winn an exciting prospect for a Cardinals team that's looking for a long-term answer at his position.

Streaky in Double-A so far
Winn has hit .265/.353/.471 with four homers, four steals (on six attempts) and a 15:25 BB:K through 26 games since being promoted to Double-A Springfield.
ANALYSIS
He actually carried his red-hot hitting from High-A to the new level at first, batting .309 with a .922 OPS over his first 17 games with Springfield. However, Winn has cooled off recently, going just 6-for-34 (.176) across his last nine contests, including an 0-for-6 effort Thursday. Of course, he's drawn eight walks and stolen three bases in that span, which certainly helps take the edge off. The composite numbers are still fantastic for a 20-year-old in Double-A, and after Winn didn't show much over-the-fence power in High-A (just one homer -- but 11 doubles and seven triples in 33 games), it's nice to see him going yard more often since the promotion. Considering that Winn is only in his second season as a full-time position player, his progress has been astonishing.

Rises to Double-A
The Cardinals promoted Winn from High-A Peoria to Double-A Springfield on Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
ANALYSIS
Winn will be joined in Springfield by two of the Cardinals' other top prospects in right-handed starters Gordon Graceffo and Michael McGreevy, who were also bumped up from High-A Peoria. Over his 147 plate appearances at Peoria this season, the 20-year-old Winn produced a .349/.404/.566 slash line while going 15-for-15 on stolen-base attempts.
Apr 27, 2022
On 10-game hitting streak
Winn has hit safely in 10 straight games (and reached safely in all 11) for Single-A Peoria, accumulating a .415/.468/.683 line with a homer, two doubles, three triples and four steals so far this season.
ANALYSIS
Winn came into pro ball with questions as to whether he'd stick as a pitcher or a shortstop, and after he posted modest results with the bat last year, there were some questions as to the Cardinals' intentions for him. But they stuck with him at short, and he's rewarded them by flashing tremendous plate discipline (6:7 BB:K) as well as game-breaking speed early in 2022. He likely won't be fast-tracked through the minor leagues, but if Winn keeps hitting this way, a promotion to High-A (where he's technically already played, as it was Peoria's level last season) should certainly be forthcoming.
