Given the upside of most of their backcourt is limited, it might be safer to look elsewhere for potential value.

McBride is starting Friday's game against the Thunder.

The depleted Knicks leaned heavily on McBride and Immanuel Quickley off the bench Thursday, and both players came up big to help New York to victory. McBride was impressive on both ends of the court, registering the first double-digit scoring effort of his NBA career while leading the team in assists and steals. The rookie has spent most of the season in the G League, but he may have earned himself a spot in the NBA rotation going forward with his strong play against Houston.

McBride's hopes of winning a spot on the Knicks' opening night roster improved after New York released fellow point guard Luca Vildoza on Sunday, Marc Berman of the New York Post reports.

McBride, the No. 36 overall pick in July's draft, is already under club control for the next three seasons after inking a two-year, $2.49 million deal in August that includes a $1.84 million team option for 2023-24, per Berman. That contract coupled with a strong showing in the Las Vegas Summer League already put McBride in good position to crack the 15-man opening night roster heading into training camp, but the release of Vildoza should only further aid the 21-year-old's chances. Even so, McBride is unlikely to play a major role for the Knicks in 2021-22, given head coach Tom Thibodeau's preference to run tight rotations and prioritize veterans.
