Winfield certainly picked an opportune time for a breakout campaign, considering he's set to hit free agency at the start of the new league year in March. However, given his importance to the Buccaneers' defense, it would appear likely the team makes a serious attempt to retain him before he enters the open market.

Winfield's tackle total checked in third on the afternoon for the Buccaneers, and it included his career-high sixth sack of the season. The rookie wasn't able to make any impact plays, but he had another solid day on the tackle front and helped limit Aaron Jones to a minuscule 1.5 yards per carry on 10 rush attempts. Winfield now has at least five stops in five of his first six contests, numbers that he's supplemented with two sacks, three defensed passes and a forced fumble.

Winfield recorded five tackles (four solo) and one defensed pass in the Buccaneers' 20-19 loss to the Bears on Thursday night.

The rookie safety had a solid performance from an IDP perspective after totaling a season-low two stops against the Chargers in Week 4, checking in third in tackles on the night for the Bucs. Winfield has yet to record an interception through is first five career games, but he's already tallied a pair of sacks and broken up three passes to go along with 30 tackles (21 solo).

Winfield totaled six tackles (four solo), including a sack, and also defensed a pass in the Buccaneers' 28-10 win over the Broncos on Sunday.

Through three career games, Winfield looks like the player raised under the tutelage of a former Pro Bowl cornerback that he is and appears to be a natural fit for coordinator Todd Bowles' aggressive scheme, one the 22-year-old reportedly picked up on quickly in training camp.

Winfield totaled 11 tackles (eight solo), including one sack, in the Buccaneers' 31-17 win over the Panthers on Sunday.

The rookie safety has immediately looked at home in coordinator Todd Bowles' scheme, leading to him recording the second-highest tackle tally on the Buccaneers in the victory. Winfield run-stopping efforts helped keep the Panthers to 3.6 yards per rush, including 3.3 for All-Pro back Christian McCaffrey before he exited the contest in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. Through two games, Winfield now has 17 total tackles, a pass breakup and Sunday's sack, confirming his top-shelf IDP value.

Winfield recorded six tackles (three solo) and was credited and defensed one pass in the Buccaneers' 34-23 loss to the Saints on Sunday.

As expected, the rookie drew the start at strong safety and more than held his own, helping limit legendary Saints signal-caller Drew Brees to 160 yards passing on 5.3 yards per attempt and the New Orleans ground attack to 2.4 yards per rush. Winfield repeatedly demonstrated his extremely well-rounded game during training camp practices, and his elevated tackle total in his first game as a pro appears to be an extension of the upside he demonstrated this summer.

Winfield is listed as the starting strong safety on the first regular-season edition of the Buccaneers depth chart released Monday, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.

The rookie capped off what was by all accounts a stellar training camp by garnering a starting job to officially kick off his NFL career. Winfield was extremely diligent during camp in learning the responsibilities of both strong safety and slot corner in coordinator Todd Bowles' complex scheme, and the coaching staff is highly intrigued by the fact the 22-year-old was not only up to the task, but managed to consistently make plays against both the first- and second-team offenses in practices.

Winfield, who's enjoying a standout camp, is being prepped to play both safety and slot corner during his rookie season, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports. "He just makes plays every day," said coach Bruce Arians. "[There is] a lot of volume of information passed to him - he handles it really well. He executes the defense, he has great instincts. You can't stay out of practice very long [or] you're going to get beat out by him."

Winfield has seemingly made his presence felt in every practice thus far, displaying an excellent knack for finding the ball and demonstrating solid tackling technique as well. The rookie, the namesake of the three-time Pro Bowler who actually recorded an interception off current Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, notes he's used to having to prepare for multiple roles within a defense, having played nickel corner and both safety positions throughout his four-year career at the University of Minnesota. Winfield's standout plays in Sunday's practice included a pass breakup in the end zone during red-zone period, and Carmen Vitali of the team's official site reports he followed it up with two big hits and an interception in Monday's session.

Winfield has impressed in early camp practices with his ball-hawking style and catching coach Bruce Arians' eye in the process, Carmen Vitali of the team's official site reports. "He'll be competing for a starting job quickly," Arians said.

A starter for most of his four years at the University of Minnesota and the son of former three-time Pro Bowler Antoine Winfield, Sr., the younger Winfield arrives in Tampa with a rock-solid foundation for the pro game. The 2020 second-round pick has stood out by already demonstrating a solid grasp of defensive coordinator Todd Bowles' complex defense despite the lack of on-field OTAs this offseason, and Vitali separately reports Winfield has repeatedly shown a nose for the football, including on a strip and subsequent fumble recovery in the opening padded practice of camp Monday. Winfield appears to have a clear path to a starting strong safety job if he can continue impressing, considering journeyman Andrew Adams, appears to be his main competition.
