Wright is the clear No. 2 option at tight end and his fantasy upside is greatly limited when LaPorta is active. Over the first four games of the season, Wright has caught seven of eight targets for 49 yards.

Wright had a rather productive day for his standards, matching his career-high four catches versus Arizona. With Sam LaPorta (ankle) suffering a sprained ankle in the contest, Wright picked up some of the slack at tight end. If LaPorta would be forced to miss time moving forward, Wright would become fantasy relevant in his absence.

Wright caught his only target for two yards in Sunday's 26-20 overtime win over the Rams.

Wright played 30 of the team's 61 offensive snaps, operating as the team's primary blocking tight end. His one catch came in the second quarter as Sam LaPorta garnered all the targets from the tight end position against Los Angeles. Wright's value is much higher to the Lions than it is to fantasy managers.

The Lions matched the three-year, $12 million offer sheet extended to Wright by the 49ers on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Wright signed an offer sheet that reportedly included $6 million guaranteed as a restricted free agent with San Francisco, but Detroit has opted to match it and retain the tight end, who plays a key role as a blocker in the run game. The 49ers will now have to look elsewhere for an additional backup to George Kittle, while Wright gets an improved contract and the opportunity to remain in a scheme he's already succeeded in. Across 14 regular-season appearances in 2023, Wright piled up 13 receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown.

The offer sheet Wright signed with the 49ers as a restricted free agent Friday is reportedly for three years and $12 million, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Per Birkett, the Lions have five days to match the offer and since Wright was an undrafted free agent, they wouldn't receive draft pick compensation if he departs. If the 25-year-old ends up with the 49ers, he'd be in line to help fill the blocking tight end void behind starter George Kittle created by the free-agent departure of Charlie Woerner.

Even if Wright maintains his grip on the No. 1 role down the stretch, it is hard to make a case for him as a fantasy asset in any format.

Detroit is still not running much of its passing game through tight ends in the wake of T.J. Hockenson's trade to Minnesota. Without much of an athletic profile to fall back on, Wright will be remain a zero-floor, low-upside fantasy option in Week 13 against Jacksonville.

Wright again logged the vast majority of snaps at tight end while James Mitchell hovered around 20 percent. However, it still doesn't look like the Lions are wanting to involve him the passing game like they did with T.J. Hockenson. Next up for Wright is a tough Week 12 matchup against Matt Milano and the Bills.

Wright could luck into his own scoring opportunities a couple of times as the rest of the season unfolds, but it seems that the Lions may be looking to replace Hockenson with a committee approach if this game was any indication.

Whether or not that happens before Sunday's contest against the Packers remains to be seen, but with T.J. Hockenson shipped off to Minnesota on Tuesday, Wright stands to benefit in terms of snaps and targets once he's available. In seven games this season, Wright has hauled in all six targets for 88 yards.

Wright (head) is expected to take on a more prominent role for the Lions over the rest of the season after Detroit traded top tight end T.J. Hockenson to Minnesota on Tuesday, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.

With Hockenson's departure, the Lions are left with Wright and James Mitchell as their sole options at tight end currently on the 53-man roster, though at least one of Garrett Griffin and Shane Zylstra are expected to be elevated from the practice squad to add depth to the position group ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers. Before he can take claim to Hockenson's vacated snaps, Wright must first clear the concussion protocol after he exited early in the Lions' Week 8 loss to the Dolphins to be evaluated for a head injury. Over his 17 career games, Wright has tallied 18 receptions for 205 yards and two touchdowns on 23 targets.

Wright had only caught one pass this year before setting new career highs in receptions and receiving yardage in this one -- even outpacing top tight end T.J. Hockenson in receiving yardage along the way. While it's unlikely that this is the sudden start of a heightened receiving role for the blocking specialist, Wright could be needed to catch a few passes over the next couple of weeks as the Lions' receiving corps returns to full health.

Wright logged 28 offensive snaps during Sunday's 29-0 loss to the Patriots.

Wright caught his fist pass of the season in Week 2, but he hasn't seen any work in the passing game since then. Expect the blocking specialist to continue in his usual ways when Detroit gets back from a Week 6 bye.

Head coach Dan Campbell is on record this summer that the Lions are aiming to keep three tight ends on the active roster this season, including a blocker to complement the receiving-proficient T.J. Hockenson. It appears Wright will be that guy in the blocking role. While this may earn him a decent amount of offensive snaps in 2022, Wright will remain a long shot for fantasy utility given the minimal receiving role he is expected to have while competing for targets underneath with the likes of Hockenson, D'Andre Swift and Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The rookie appeared in 10 games for the Lions last season, all after Week 7, recording 12 catches on 17 targets for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Currently No. 2 on the Lions' positional depth chart at tight end, Wright will work to build on his rookie campaign this upcoming season.

Wright returned from a week off due to COVID protocols and again logged over 70 percent of the offensive snaps while serving as a top tight end in the absence of T.J. Hockenson (finger). While most of his production came on a flea flicker in the third quarter when the tight end sneaked behind the defense for a 36-yard touchdown, the Notre Dame product is continuing to show that he can be a little more than a blocker at the pro level. In total, he will finish the 2021 campaign with 12 catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns on 17 targets despite not seeing regular action until the second half of the year. Considering he will now be an exclusive-rights free agent at the end of the year, Wright is a strong candidate to return to Detroit in 2022 as a depth option behind Hockenson.

The 23-year-old Wright did play 75 percent of snaps Week 15 and 73 percent Week 16, but with only three catches for four yards on four targets between the two games. A solid outing Week 18 could help him stick around on the depth chart behind T.J. Hockenson (IR/hand) next year.

While the loss of Shane Zylstra (knee) could cement him as Detroit's clear-cut No. 1 tight end, the Notre Dame product doesn't seem to have the skill set or role to be a worthwhile fantasy contributor in Week 17 against Seattle.

Wright was targeted once but did not catch a pass during Sunday's 30-12 win over the Cardinals.

Wright trailed Shane Zylstra in offensive snaps last week against Denver, but this time Wright logged three quarters of the playing time while Zylstra was held under half of it. However, neither tight end found much success as a receiver despite Detroit finding immense offensive success. As such, neither of Wright or Zylstra is worth much fantasy consideration, especially with Jared Goff (COVID-19) uncertain to play Sunday against Atlanta.

While Wright was certainly more involved as a receiver, he did it while not topping 60 percent of the offensive snaps. Instead, Shane Zylstra led Detroit tight ends in snaps, though neither managed a useful stat line for fantasy purposes. Even if Hockenson remains sidelined in Week 15 against Arizona, neither Wright or Zylstra will be worthy of much fantasy consideration.

An undrafted rookie, Wright didn't make it past roster cut-down day at the end of the preseason, but the Lions elevated him from the practice squad twice before signing him to the active roster for good Nov. 8 in the wake of Darren Fells' release. Since the Lions' Week 9 bye, Wright has earned between 28 and 51 percent of offensive snaps over the last four games, compiling four catches (on six targets) for 42 yards and one touchdown. The team will be without its top two running backs D'Andre Swift (shoulder) and Jamaal Williams (COVID-19) on Sunday, so Detroit may air it out a bit more than usual.

Running as the No. 2 tight end behind T. J. Hockenson, Wright took advantage of a Vikings defense without top linebackers Eric Kendricks or Anthony Barr to score his first career touchdown. However, he's caught a pass in just half of his first six career games since the undrafted tight end was first promoted from the practice squad in late October. Wright would need to build upon this performance in a big way in order to enter the fantasy conversation.

With Darren Fells now in Tampa Bay, Wright is now the second tight end on the depth chart under T.J. Hockenson. However, the 6-foot-7, 281-pound blocking specialist is unlikely to become a productive receiving threat at any point down the road.

Wright may be the favorite for the No. 3 job at tight end considering he clearly played ahead of Alize Mack. However, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Lions were to bring in another tight end as other teams imminently trim their rosters to 53 players in the coming days.
