Placed back on practice squad
The Chiefs reverted Edwards-Helaire to their practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire saw his first action of the season Sunday against Buffalo and logged two offensive snaps, carrying twice for five yards in the second quarter. That made him a distant third in Kansas City's running back pecking order behind Kareem Hunt (47 offensive snaps) and Brashard Smith (12). The team's No. 1 tailback, Isiah Pacheco (knee), was unable to suit up Sunday, and with Pacheco expected to return in Week 11 following the team's Week 10 bye, Edwards-Helaire may have to wait a while before being elevated again.
Nov 1, 2025
Joins active roster
The Chiefs elevated Edwards-Helaire to their active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
The 2020 first-round pick from LSU provides Kansas City with needed depth at running back, as Isiah Pacheco (knee) will be sidelined in the Week 9 matchup against the Bills. Now with the active roster, Edwards-Helaire is likely to play a depth role in the Chiefs' backfield Sunday.
Aug 27, 2025
Practice squad reunion with Chiefs
Kansas City signed Edwards-Helaire to the practice squad Wednesday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire spent the offseason competing for a depth role with New Orleans, where he suited up for two regular-season games in 2024, but after being cut Tuesday he now rejoins the team that selected him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He'll provide backfield depth for Kansas City.
Aug 26, 2025
Released by New Orleans
The Saints released Edwards-Helaire on Tuesday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire played just 33 offensive snaps during the preseason and managed to rush 10 times for just 22 yards. He also caught all three of his targets for 25 yards. It wasn't nearly enough to win a job behind Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller and rookie Devin Neal.
Aug 10, 2025
Sees action in second half Sunday
Edwards-Helaire logged four carries for six yards and caught his lone target for nine yards during Sunday's 27-13 preseason loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire logged all four of his carries in the third quarter. He didn't get a chance to tote the rock until after Kendre Miller, Velus Jones and Cam Akers all logged rushing attempts in the first half. New Orleans was also without sixth-round rookie Devin Neal (hamstring) on Sunday. Once Neal is healthy, Edwards-Helaire will likely be left on the outside looking in at the depth chart. His next chance to play this preseason will come Sunday, Aug. 17 against Jacksonville.
Feb 13, 2025
Staying in New Orleans
Edwards-Helaire signed a reserve/future contract with the Saints on Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire started the 2024 season on the Chiefs' reserve/non-football illness list. He was activated from the NFI list Oct. 15 but was a healthy scratch for the next nine games and was ultimately waived by Kansas City in mid-December. He signed with the Saints' practice squad two days later and was elevated for the final two games of the regular season, during which he logged 13 carries for 46 yards while adding three catches (on five targets) for 24 yards. By signing a future contract, Edwards-Helaire will be on the Saints' 90-man roster for the start of the new league year March 12. He'll be able to participate in OTAs, minicamp and training camp and will look to earn a spot on New Orleans' 53-man roster for the 2025 season.

Goes back to practice squad
The Saints reverted Edwards-Helaire to their practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was elevated for Sunday's Week 18 game against Tampa Bay and led New Orleans running backs with 26 yards on eight carries while adding one reception for 14 yards. With both Alvin Kamara (groin) and Kendre Miller (concussion) out of action, Edwards-Helaire finished third in offensive snaps (18) among the Saints' tailbacks, though he didn't trail Jamaal Williams (24) or Jordan Mims (24) by much. After joining New Orleans on a practice-squad deal in mid-December, Edwards-Helaire played in two contests, totaling 46 yards on 13 rushes and 24 yards on three receptions.
Jan 5, 2025
Paces ground attack in loss
Edwards-Helaire rushed eight times for 26 yards and brought in his only target for 14 yards in the Saints' 27-19 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire served as the de facto No. 1 back as expected with both Alvin Kamara (groin) and Kendre Miller (concussion) sidelined, and he produced a team-high rushing yardage total. The veteran back will be an unrestricted free agent come the new league year, and Edwards-Helaire shouldn't have too much trouble garnering some interest on the open market given his status as a one-time first-round pick and the fact he's just 25 years old.
Jan 4, 2025
Up from practice squad
The Saints elevated Edwards-Helaire from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday in advance of Sunday's game in Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
With Kendre Miller (concussion) out and Alvin Kamara (groin) doubtful for Week 18 action, Edwards-Helaire will be among the RB options for the Saints on Sunday along with Jamaal Williams and Jordan Mims. In Week 17 against the Raiders, Kamara also was sidelined, Miller sustained his head injury, and Mims was a healthy scratch, which left Edwards-Helaire (26 of 60 snaps) and Williams (25 of 60) to split work. Having said that, Edwards turned his seven touches into 30 yards from scrimmage, while Williams managed 24 total yards on three touches.
Jan 3, 2025
Will be active Week 18
Interim coach Darren Rizzi said Friday that Edwards-Helaire will be active Sunday against the Buccaneers, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire will officially be elevated from the practice squad prior to Sunday's regular-season finale. He led all Saints running backs with five rushing attempts in the Week 17 loss to the Raiders, and Edwards-Helaire could work ahead of Jamaal Williams and Jordan Mims in a backfield that will definitely be without Kendre Miller (concussion) and is unlikely to feature Alvin Kamara (groin), who is listed as doubtful.
Dec 30, 2024
Heads back to practice squad
Edwards-Helaire reverted to the Saints' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
With Alvin Kamara (groin) sidelined for a second straight game Sunday against the Raiders, Kendre Miller got the start, but Edwards-Helaire received the first touch among Saints running backs. Miller's exit in the second quarter due to a concussion allowed Edwards-Helaire to earn the most snaps (26) and touches (seven for 30 yards from scrimmage) in the position group, while Jamaal Williams played 25 snaps and handled three touches (for 24 total yards), and Miller was contained to eight plays and four touches (for 19 total yards). It's unknown if Kamara or Miller will gain clearance to suit up Week 18 at Tampa Bay, so Edwards-Helaire and Williams may be lined up to split the backfield reps in that contest.
Dec 29, 2024
Seven touches in Saints debut
Edwards-Helaire carried the ball five times for 20 yards and caught two of four targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 25-10 loss to the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Claimed off waivers from Kansas City less than two weeks ago, Edwards-Helaire saw more action than expected Sunday in his New Orleans debut after Kendre Miller was forced from the game due to a potential concussion. With Alvin Kamara (groin) also sidelined also sidelined and the Saints focused on 2025, Edwards-Helaire -- who starred for LSU in college -- could find himself leading the backfield in Week 18 against the Buccaneers.
Dec 29, 2024
Available for debut with new team
Edwards-Helaire is listed as active Sunday versus the Raiders, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire joined the Saints' practice squad on Dec. 18, and after a week and a half in the program, he'll be available for his debut with his new organization after the team elevated him from the practice squad Saturday. With Alvin Kamara (groin) sidelined again and Jordan Mims a healthy scratch, Kendre Miller, Jamaal Williams and Edwards-Helaire will be the backfield options for New Orleans in Week 17.
Dec 28, 2024
Elevated to active roster
The Saints promoted Edwards-Helaire to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
With Alvin Kamara (groin) still sidelined, Edwards-Halaire will join a plethora of available backs for New Orleans including Kendre Miller, Jamaal Williams and Jordan Mims. This will be Edwards-Helaire's first time suiting up on a 53-man roster this season.
Dec 18, 2024
Joins Saints' practice squad
The Saints signed Edwards-Helaire to the practice squad Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Alvin Kamara came out of this past Sunday's loss to the Commanders with an adductor injury, which is clouding his availability for a Week 16 road matchup with the Packers. If Kamara needs to cede reps to others Monday, Kendre Miller likely would get the first chance to handle early-down work, but Jamaal Williams, Jordan Mims, practice-squad member Xazavian Valladay and now Edwards-Helaire would be candidates for work on game days.
Dec 18, 2024
Scooped up by Saints
Edwards-Helaire is signing with the Saints on Wednesday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen if Edwards-Helaire will be joining the active roster or going to the practice squad. Either way, the former Chiefs running back could contribute for the stretch run on a Saints team that could be without lead back Alvin Kamara (groin) against the Packers on Monday. Edwards-Helaire didn't appear in a game for the Chiefs during the 2024 season prior to being waived Dec. 16.
Dec 16, 2024
Cut by Kansas City
The Chiefs waived Edwards-Helaire on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire has yet to play in a game this season. After starting the season on the reserve/NFI list, Edwards-Helaire has been a healthy inactive each of the last nine contests. The No. 32 overall pick of the 2020 Draft, Edwards-Helaire appeared in 48 games for the Chiefs, amassing a 441-1,845-12 rushing line, adding 89-765-7 on 122 targets in the pass game. Still just 25 years old, Edwards-Helaire will have a chance to catch on elsewhere for the remainder of the 2024 season.
Dec 15, 2024
Inactive Sunday
Edwards-Helaire is inactive for Sunday's game against the Browns.
ANALYSIS
With Edwards-Helaire once again a healthy scratch for Kansas City, Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele are slated to handle the Chiefs' Week 15 backfield duties.
Dec 8, 2024
Inactive versus Chargers
Edwards-Helaire is inactive for Sunday night's game against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
With Edwards-Helaire once again a healthy scratch for Sunday's contest, Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele are available to handle Kansas City's Week 14 backfield duties.
Nov 29, 2024
Healthy scratch for Friday's game
Edwards-Helaire is inactive for Friday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire remains a healthy scratch in a Chiefs backfield that will welcome back Isiah Pacheco (ankle) against the AFC West rival Raiders. Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele will also dress for Kansas City at running back Friday.
Nov 24, 2024
Inactive Sunday
Edwards-Helaire is inactive for Sunday's game against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
With Edwards-Helaire inactive and Isiah Pacheco (ankle) still on IR, Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele will handle the Chiefs' Week 12 backfield duties.
Nov 17, 2024
Healthy scratch again Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bills, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran back will be in street clothes for the fourth straight game since being activated from the reserve/non-football illness list. With Edwards-Helaire inactive, Carson Steele will work as the No. 3 running back behind Kareem Hunt and Samaje Perine versus Buffalo.
Nov 10, 2024
Inactive Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire, who wasn't on the Chiefs' Week 10 injury report, will thus wait at least another week before making his regular-season debut. Versus Denver, Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele are Kansas City's backfield options.
Nov 4, 2024
Healthy scratch in Week 9
Edwards-Helaire (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Monday against the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire thus will be a healthy scratch for a third consecutive contest after spending the early portion of the season on the reserve/non-football illness list. With Isiah Pacheco (fibula) still on injured reserve, the Chiefs will continue to entrust the backfield to Kareem Hunt, while Samaje Perine and Carson Steele also will be on hand for RB reps.
Oct 27, 2024
Inactive vesus Raiders
Edwards-Helaire is inactive for Sunday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire, who wasn't on the Chiefs' Week 8 injury report, will wait at least another week before making his regular-season debut. Against the Raiders, Kansas City's backfield will be comprised of Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele.
Oct 20, 2024
Inactive Sunday
Edwards-Helaire is inactive for Sunday's game against the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire, who was activated from the reserve/non-football illness list Tuesday, practiced fully this week, but his regular-season debut won't occur for at least another week. As a result, the Chiefs' Week 7 backfield is comprised of Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele.
Oct 15, 2024
Returns to active roster
The Chiefs activated Edwards-Helaire from the reserve/non-football illness list Tuesday, Charles Goldman of AtoZSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire had missed the Chiefs' first five games after landing on the NFI list following the preseason, but he resumed practicing with the team earlier this month and has now been deemed ready to play coming out of Kansas City's Week 6 bye. With Isiah Pacheco (fibula) still on injured reserve, Edwards-Helaire could have an opportunity to carve out a role in the Kansas City backfield, though Kareem Hunt has fared well as the Chiefs' lead back for the past two games and should retain top slotting on the depth chart for the time being. Rather than presenting a threat to Hunt, Edwards-Helaire could more realistically challenge Samaje Perine for a change-of-pace/passing-down role.
Oct 7, 2024
Officially out for MNF
Edwards-Helaire (illness) won't play Monday against the Saints, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was previously considered doubtful, so it isn't surprising that he won't be making his season debut Monday. Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele will continue to hold down the fort in a Kansas City backfield that's without Edwards-Helaire and Isiah Pacheco (fibula). The Chiefs will be on bye in Week 6, so Edwards-Helaire's next chance to take the field will be a Week 7 Super Bowl rematch against the 49ers. He will first need to be activated from the reserve/non-football injury list to be eligible to play.
Oct 4, 2024
Another limited practice
Edwards-Helaire, who remains on the reserve/non-football illness list, practiced in a limited capacity Friday.
ANALYSIS
The Chiefs placed Edwards-Helaire on reserve/NFI prior to Week 1, which ruled him out for at least the first four games of the campaign. The team then designated him for return this Wednesday, opening a 21-day window for him to be evaluated for a potential return to the active roster. Edwards-Helaire so far has managed back-to-back capped sessions this week, and Kansas City's final Week 5 injury report will include a game status for him ahead of Monday's matchup with the Saints. If he's listed as anything other than out Saturday, the team will have until Monday at 4:00 p.m. ET to activate him, which, if it comes to pass, could mean he's in contention to reps out of the backfield immediately along with Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele with lead runner Isiah Pacheco (fibula) on injured reserve.
Oct 3, 2024
Practice window opened
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Edwards-Helaire was designated for return to practice Wednesday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Edwards-Helaire's 21-day evaluation window was opened Wednesday, he didn't take the field that day and instead made his return to practice Thursday for the Chiefs' first official Week 5 session. According to Derrick, Edwards-Helaire is scheduled to take part in scout-team work Thursday, and the running back's progress will be measured over the next few days before a determination is made on his availability for Monday's game against the Saints. Once activated from the reserve/non-football illness list, Edwards-Helaire could push for a role in a Kansas City backfield that currently includes Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele while lead option Isiah Pacheco (fibula) is on injured reserve.
Oct 2, 2024
Cleared for practice
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is returning to practice this week and should be available for games soon, NFL Network's Ian Rapaport reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire didn't get much playing time outside of blowouts or clear passing situations last season, but he may take on a larger role now that Isiah Pacheco (fibula) is on injured reserve and likely out until at least November. The Chiefs otherwise have Kareem Hunt, Samaje Perine and Carson Steele as their backfield options ahead of Monday's game against New Orleans, giving Edwards-Helaire a chance to mix in immediately if everything checks out in practice this week.
Sep 29, 2024
Expected back this coming week
Edwards-Helaire is on track to return from the non-football illness list this coming week, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With Isiah Pacheco on IR, the return of Edwards-Helaire would bolster the Chiefs' backfield depth while Pacheco recovers from his fibula injury. For now, the team's top available RB options are Carson Steele, Samaje Perine and Kareem Hunt.
Sep 2, 2024
Missing at least four games
The Chiefs are slated to place Edwards-Helaire (illness) on the reserve/non-football illness list Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire regularly missed practices during training camp due to what seems to be a recurring illness, and he also revealed in July that he deals with post-traumatic stress disorder. The exact nature of Edwards-Helaire's current ailment remains unspecified, but being placed on the NFI list will rule him out for at least the first four games of the season, and position Samaje Perine for a key backup role behind starting running back Isiah Pacheco. Meanwhile, UDFA Carson Steele bumps up into the No. 3 spot.
Aug 21, 2024
In the mix behind Pacheco
As Thursday's preseason finale against the Bears approaches, Jesse Newell of the Kansas City Star projects that Edwards-Helaire (illness) will maintain his spot in a Chiefs' backfield that is slated to be led by Isiah Pacheco.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that Edwards-Helaire, who revealed last month that he deals with post-traumatic stress disorder, has missed a number of practices in training camp, however offensive coordinator Matt Nagy indicated Tuesday that despite the 2020 first-rounder's missed time the Chiefs "know who Clyde is and what he's done," adding "he's a guy that's put a lot of good film out there. He's had a lot of valuable snaps here in Kansas City. We know what his strengths are, and we know how to use him." Along with Edwards-Helaire, Deneric Prince and Carson Steele are also in the team's running back mix behind Pacheco ahead of Week 1.
Aug 19, 2024
Expected back at practice
Coach Andy Reid indicated that he expects Edwards-Helaire (illness) to practice Monday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire didn't play in Saturday's preseason game against the Lions, and it's unclear if he'll see snaps in Kansas City's exhibition finale versus the Bears on Thursday. When available, Edwards-Helaire slots in behind top back Isiah Pacheco, but the 2020 first-rounder's status is worth monitoring ahead of Week 1. In addition to Pacheco and Edwards-Helaire, Deneric Prince and Carson Steele also could factor into Kansas City's backfield equation out of the gate this season.
Aug 12, 2024
Out with illness again
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is not practicing Monday, Charles Goldman of AtoZSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire suited up for Saturday's preseason loss to Jacksonville after missing time in recent practices due to an illness, and it appears the veteran running back is now sick again. He's competing with Deneric Prince for the No. 2 backfield role behind starter Isiah Pacheco. Edwards-Helaire entered Saturday's game second after Pacheco, with Prince taking the field third among Kansas City's running backs.
Aug 10, 2024
Limited action in preseason opener
Edwards-Helaire rushed twice for no gain and wasn't targeted in the Chiefs' 26-13 preseason loss to the Jaguars on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
The fifth-year pro was the second back to log a carry after Isiah Pacheco helmed the ground attack on the Chiefs' opening drive. The backfield pecking order Saturday mirrors the one Kansas City is expected to start the regular season with, one Edwards-Helaire logged a modest 87 touches in across 15 regular-season games in 2023.
Aug 7, 2024
Returns to practice
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is practicing Wednesday, Harold R. Kuntz of Fox 4 KC reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire recently revealed that he struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is seemingly at least part of the reason he's been in an out of practice this summer. Of course, it's possible he also dealt with an unrelated illness. Either way, Edwads-Helaire seems to have participated in more practices than he's missed, and there's not much concern about his knowledge of the Chiefs offense in Year 5 under coach Andy Reid. There has been talk of 2023 UDFA Deneric Price challenging for the No. 2 RB role behind locked-in starter Isiah Pacheco.
Aug 6, 2024
Dealing with illness
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is not practicing Tuesday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire looks to primarily be competing with 2023 UDFA Deneric Prince for the No. 2 role behind starter Isaiah Pacheco, so having to miss further reps could be significant. The fifth-year veteran landed on the active/non-football illness earlier in camp, and he missed a few days late in July due to sickness, but it remains to be seen whether his current ailment is a related issue.
Jul 31, 2024
Returns to practice
Edwards-Helaire (illness) returned to practice Wednesday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire is the only RB behind Isiah Pacheco with considerable NFL starting experience, but reports from the first week of training camp suggested 2023 UDFA Deneric Prince was repping ahead of CEH during run periods. While it remains to be seen if Prince is truly pushing ahead of Edwards-Helaire on the depth chart, this should at least be taken as a hint that the latter wouldn't take over all of Pacheco's workload in the event KC's starting RB missed time with an injury. In any case, missing a couple practices with an illness shouldn't have any impact on the backup RB slotting.

Edwards-Helaire (illness) returned to practice Wednesday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.

Jul 28, 2024
Managing illness
Edwards-Helaire was held out of practice Sunday due to an illness, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire had been placed on the active/non-football illness earlier in camp before being cleared to return to practice last Sunday. It's not clear if the running back's current ailment is related to the earlier issue. Edwards-Helaire is slated to compete for backup running back duties behind Isiah Pacheco during training camp.
Jul 23, 2024
Third through rotation in drills
Edwards-Helaire was the third RB up during the run period of Tuesday's practice, behind starter Isiah Pacheco and 2023 UDFA Deneric Prince, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Chiefs no longer have Jerick McKinnon and settled for undrafted rookies as their backfield additions this offseason, but that doesn't mean Edwards-Helaire is a lock for the second spot on the depth chart. Even if he does reprise that role, as many expect, CEH could end up focused on passing-down situations while another, lesser-known RB served as Pacheco's backup for early downs and/or short-yardage situations. The Chiefs re-signed Edwards-Helaire in March on a one-year, $1.7 million contract that includes $1.325 guaranteed -- considerably less than the average annual value on his rookie contract after they selected him 32nd overall in the 2020 Draft.
Jul 21, 2024
Displays clean bill of health
Edwards-Helaire passed his physical Sunday after the Chiefs placed him on the active/non-football illness list Saturday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Veterans reported to Kansas City's training camp Saturday, and after showing up with some sort of ailment, Edwards-Helaire was able to join his teammates on the practice field one day later. He's thus slated to serve as the primary backup to starting running back Isiah Pacheco in the coming campaign, which amounted to 88 touches in 10 regular-season games in 2022 and 87 touches in 15 such contests last season.
Apr 2, 2024
Re-signs with Super Bowl champs
Edwards-Helaire has agreed to a one-year deal to remain with the Chiefs, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire, who turns 25 on April 11, is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he carried 70 times for 223 yards and a TD, while catching 17 of his 22 targets for 188 yards and a receiving score in 15 regular-season contests. Now that he's signed on for a fifth year with the Chiefs, the 2020 first-rounder is set to continue to work in a complementary role behind top option Isiah Pacheco in a backfield that also currently rosters La'Mical Perine, Keaontay Ingram, Deneric Prince, Hassan Hall and Louis Rees-Zammit. In that context, Edwards-Helaire's fantasy upside is modest as long as Pacheco is healthy and available.
Feb 9, 2024
Good to go
Edwards-Helaire (illness) doesn't have an injury designation for the Super Bowl against San Francisco on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was added to the injury report Thursday as a limited participant before returning to full participation Friday. His illness apparently isn't serious, with his role in the Super Bowl now partially depending on whether Jerick McKinnon -- listed as questionable -- is activated from injured reserve and ultimately able to return from the sports hernia surgery he had in December. With McKinnon out for the past month and a half, Edwards-Helaire and Isiah Pacheco have mostly shared the playing time in clear passing situations.
Feb 8, 2024
Comes down with illness
Edwards-Helaire practiced in a limited capacity Thursday due to an illness.
ANALYSIS
Isiah Pacheco (toe/ankle), the Chiefs' top running back, has been operating without practice restrictions this week, but reserve RB Jerick McKinnon (groin), who was designation to return from IR on Saturday, has been limited, and Edwards-Helaire joined him in that regard Thursday. As such, the situation behind Pacheco is up in the air just three days before Super Bowl LVIII versus the 49ers, with La'Mical Perine currently the healthy backfield option on the active roster.
Jan 9, 2024
Minimal involvement in Week 18
Edwards-Helaire notched two rushes for one yard and gathered in one of two targets for nine yards during Sunday's 13-12 win against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
While Edwards-Helaire was active for Sunday's regular-season finale, he only took the field for 11 offensive snaps, yielding the vast majority of work to La'Michael Perine, who rushed 21 times for 76 yards. CEH should slot in as a backup for the Chiefs' upcoming playoff run, which begins with a wild-card clash with the Dolphins on Saturday. He could slot into a larger role should Isiah Pacheco miss any postseason action with Jerick McKinnon (groin) already on injured reserve.
Jan 3, 2024
Not on injury report
Edwards-Helaire (illness) did not appear on the Chiefs' injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire missed the team's Week 17 win over the Bengals due to an illness, but he now appears set to return to the field for Sunday's regular season finale. With Kansas City already set to sit some of their starters, including Patrick Mahomes, Edwards-Helaire could be asked to start in place on Isiah Pacheco (quadriceps) on Sunday versus the Chargers in the team's regular season finale.
Dec 31, 2023
Surprise inactive Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Though Ian Rapoport of NFL Network previously reported Saturday that Edwards-Helaire was on track to play Sunday, the fourth-year running back ultimately didn't show enough improvement in his recovery from the illness that kept him from practicing Thursday and Friday to give it a go for Week 17. With Edwards-Helaire sidelined, the Chiefs are left with La'Mical Perine and Keaontay Ingram as their depth options behind lead back Isiah Pacheco (shoulder), whose practice time had also been limited this week while he was in concussion protocol. Pacheco could nonetheless be tasked with handling a workhorse role out of the backfield Sunday, given the lack of snaps Perine and Ingram have seen with Kansas City this season.
Dec 30, 2023
Expected to play Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is expected to play Sunday against the Bengals, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
In the words of Rapoport, Edwards-Helaire "should" be able to go after missing practice Thursday and Friday before earning a questionable tag for Week 17. Isiah Pacheco (concussion/shoulder) is also expected to play after clearing the concussion protocol. Assuming he's truly healthy, Pacheco should continue to handle the lion's share of the Chiefs' backfield opportunities.
Dec 29, 2023
Questionable after two DNPs
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire didn't practice Thursday or Friday, and the Chiefs could be woefully shorthanded in the backfield if he's unavailable Sunday, as Isiah Pacheco (concussion/shoulder) is also listed as questionable. Pacheco was a limited participant in Friday's practice after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday. La'Mical Perine is the only other running back on the roster, though Kansas City also has Deneric Prince and Keaontay Ingram on the practice squad. If Edwards-Helaire ultimately suits up Sunday and Pacheco doesn't, the 2020 first-round draft pick out of LSU would be in line to lead Kansas City's backfield.
Dec 28, 2023
Set to miss practice Thursday
Edwards-Helaire (illness) won't practice Thursday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Also not in line to practice Thursday is fellow RB Isiah Pacheco, who is in the NFL's concussion protocol. With that in mind, Edwards-Helaire's status ahead of Sunday's game against the Bengals gains added import, especially with Jerick McKinnon (groin) now on IR. Look for added context with regard to Kansas City's Week 17 backfield to arrive no later than Friday's final injury report.
Dec 25, 2023
Role shrinks against Raiders
Edwards-Helaire carried the ball four times for six yards and caught all three of his targets for 42 yards in Monday's 20-14 loss to Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
After seeing 30 touches over the prior two games while Isiah Pacheco was sidelined with a shoulder issue, Edwards-Helaire predictably saw his role shrink with Kansas City's starting RB available again. Pacheco left Monday's game in the second half to get checked for a concussion and didn't return, however, and Edwards-Helaire was able to boost his numbers with a 32-yard reception in the fourth quarter. Jerick McKinnon (groin) is on IR, so Edwards-Helaire could find himself back in the top job in Week 17 against the Bengals if Pacheco isn't able to clear the league's protocol.
Dec 23, 2023
Ready for Week 16
Edwards-Helaire (personal) doesn't have a designation for Monday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire missed Friday's practice to tend to a personal matter, but he returned to drills one day later as a full participant, setting him up to be available for Week 16 action. Meanwhile, he'll welcome Isiah Pacheco back to the Chiefs backfield for the first time since Week 13, and Edwards-Helaire will be the primary complement to him, with Jerick McKinnon (groin) sidelined. On the campaign, Edwards-Helaire has averaged 3.4 yards on his 64 carries, hauled in 13 of 17 targets for 137 yards and scored two touchdowns in 13 appearances.
Dec 22, 2023
Not practicing Friday
Edwards-Helaire won't practice Friday due to personal reasons, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Also not practicing Friday will be fellow running back Jerick McKinnon (groin), with added context regarding the duo's status slated to arrive no later than Saturday's final injury report ahead of Monday night's game against the Raiders. If Edwards-Helaire is available for the contest, he figures to return to a complementary role in Week 16 due to the looming return to action of Isiah Pacheco (shoulder).
Dec 17, 2023
Big day through air in Week 15
Edwards-Helaire carried the ball 13 times for 37 yards and caught all four of his targets for 64 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-17 win over the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
The running back took full advantage of another absence for Isiah Pacheco (shoulder), topping 100 scrimmage yards for the first time since Week 2 of last season and catching his first TD pass since Week 4 of 2022. Edwards-Helaire may have done enough the last couple weeks to retain a role in the Kansas City backfield once Pacheco is healthy again, but he'll likely need to keep hold of the starting job to be a true fantasy asset in Week 16 against the Raiders.
Dec 15, 2023
In line for more work Sunday
Edwards-Helaire is again expected to see increased work out of the Chiefs' backfield Sunday against the Patriots after Isiah Pacheco (shoulder) was ruled out for Week 15, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
With Pacheco out last week, Edwards-Helaire narrowly out-snapped Jerick McKinnon 32 to 30 and handled 11 carries to McKinnon's four. McKinnon, however, scored a goal-line touchdown, and CEH mustered 68 scoreless yards on 13 touches. Per McMullen, coach Andy Reid anticipates that Pacheco should be available for the Chiefs' Dec. 25 contest against the Raiders.
Dec 10, 2023
Modest numbers in Sunday's start
Edwards-Helaire carried the ball 11 times for 39 yards and caught two of four targets for 29 yards in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Getting the start in place of the injured Isiah Pacheco (shoulder), Edwards-Helaire didn't find much success on the ground -- his longest carry went for only seven yards -- but he did turn a pass from Patrick Mahomes into a 20-yard gain in the fourth quarter, helping to set up a field goal that tied the game at 17-17. Pacheco isn't expected to need an IR stint, but if he's unavailable in Week 15, Edwards-Helaire could see an elevated workload once against versus the Patriots.
Dec 8, 2023
In line for added work Sunday
With Isiah Pacheco (shoulder) ruled out, Edwards-Helaire is in line for added opportunities Sunday against the Bills, Adam Teicher of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com, Edwards-Helaire is expected to be next in line for Kansas City's backfield touches Sunday, but Jerick McKinnon, who has missed the past two games with a groin injury, will also be on hand and should contribute in passing situations. Additionally, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com relays that Deneric Prince is a candidate to be elevated from the team's practice squad ahead of Week 14 action.
Dec 6, 2023
Three touches in Week 13
Edwards-Helaire carried the ball twice for six yards and caught one of his two targets for eight yards in Sunday's 27-19 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire played 17 of the Chiefs' 67 offensive snaps Sunday in relief of starter Isiah Pacheco with fellow running back Jerick McKinnon (groin) sidelined. The veteran was unable to get much going while the Chiefs' offense struggled in the contest. Edwards-Helaire's minimal output on limited touches should keep him off the fantasy radar as anything more than an insurance policy behind Pacheco with McKinnon out. The Chiefs are set to host the Bills in Week 14.
Nov 28, 2023
Trio of carries in Week 12
Edwards-Helaire totaled three carries for five yards during Sunday's 31-17 victory over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire rotated in for 12 offensive snaps in Sunday's clash, marking an uptick in his playing time compared to other recent contests. That was likely due to Jerick McKinnon (groin) sitting out the affair, opening more reps behind Isiah Pacheco. The same could be true next week if McKinnon remains sidelined, but CEH didn't produce much with the added snaps, so there doesn't appear to be much upside to his game aside from being a handcuff to Pacheco while McKinnon is out.
Nov 21, 2023
Pair of carries versus Eagles
Edwards-Helaire recorded two carries for 20 yards during Monday's 21-17 loss versus Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire missed the game before the bye week due to illness, but he was all systems go Monday. Even so, CEH logged just four offensive snaps in the game, trailing both Isiah Pacheco (48) and Jerick McKinnon (24) on that front. As long as the pair remains healthy, it's unlikely Edwards-Helaire will carve out enough of a role to warrant a look in most fantasy formats.
Nov 16, 2023
Healthy coming out of bye
Edwards-Helaire (illness) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
CEH missed the Week 9 game against the Dolphins in Germany, but the bye week was enough time to get over whatever illness. He merely handles the backfield scraps for Kansas City behind Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon.
Nov 2, 2023
Ruled out for Week 9
Edwards-Helaire has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany due to an illness, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was ruled out for the Chiefs' Week 9 game after he was the only player on the Chiefs' 53-man active roster who failed to practice in some capacity Thursday. The severity of Edwards-Helaire's illness isn't known, but with the Chiefs on bye Week 10, he'll have extra time to recover before Kansas City returns to action Nov. 20 versus Philadelphia. With Edwards-Helaire sidelined and with Jerick McKinnon tending to a groin injury that rendered him a limited participant in Thursday's practice, the Chiefs could look to elevate another running back from the practice squad to add depth behind top option Isiah Pacheco for Sunday's game.
Nov 2, 2023
Not practicing Thursday
Edwards-Helaire (illness) will not practice Thursday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
CEH played a season-low two offensive snaps in last Sunday's Week 8 loss to the Broncos, as his role on offense has continued to diminish. On the season, Edwards-Helaire has rushed 33 times for 109 yards (3.3 YPC) and one touchdown.
Oct 31, 2023
One tote against Broncos
Edwards-Helaire logged one carry for four yards during Sunday's 24-9 loss versus the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire logged just two total snaps in the contest and has no more than three totes in a game since Week 3. The fifth-year running back is unlikely to see his role expand in the future, barring an absence from at least Isiah Pacheco. Even then, there's no guarantee Edwards-Helaire's role would surpass Jerick McKinnon's.
Oct 24, 2023
Little production against Chargers
Edwards-Helaire notched two rushes for five yards and failed to reel in his lone target during Sunday's 31-17 victory against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire remains the third fiddle in Kansas City's backfield equation, sitting behind Isiah Pacheco in the pecking order for carries and behind Jerick McKinnon for looks in the passing game. He finished with just seven total snaps in Sunday's affair and hasn't logged double-digit snaps since Week 3, so there's little to get encouraged about as long as the running back room remains healthy.
Oct 13, 2023
Three touches in Week 6 win
Edwards-Helaire had two carries for seven yards and caught his only target for nine yards in Thursday's 19-8 win over the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire and Jerick McKinnon got just three touches apiece while Isiah Pacheco racked up 98 scrimmage yard on 22 touches, so Edwards-Helaire didn't see enough volume to take advantage of facing Denver's porous run defense. As long as Pacheco's healthy, Edwards-Helaire will likely remain limited to a handful of snaps and touches per game.
Oct 10, 2023
Little impact in Week 5
Edwards-Helaire accrued three carries for four yards during Sunday's 27-20 win over Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire finished the game with nine total snaps, sitting well behind Isiah Pacheco (39 snaps) and Jerick McKinnon (18 snaps) in terms of playing time. CEH could claim a slightly more prominent role in the future should Pacheco miss some time, but he's not particularly appealing in most fantasy formats at this juncture.
Oct 3, 2023
Minimal traction versus Jets
Edwards-Helaire posted three carries for 12 yards and hauled in his only target for one yard during Sunday's 23-20 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire logged just six total snaps during Sunday night's affair, but he didn't turn four of those six into touches and some production. Still, he's again fallen well behind both Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon in the pecking order, so there isn't much to write home about regarding CEH's fantasy prospects as long as Pacheco and McKinnon remain available.
Sep 24, 2023
Scores with increased workload
Edwards-Helaire had 15 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown while adding a reception for two yards in Sunday's 41-10 win over Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire saw his workload increase drastically after receiving just seven combined carries over his previous two contests. The increase in playing time wasn't a result of the blowout, with his trip to the end zone coming early in the second quarter while Kansas City was still building its lead. Isiah Pacheco (hamstring) suited up after being labeled a game-time decision, so perhaps the uncertainty regarding his availability during the practice week led the coaching staff to scheme more plays for CEH against Chicago. Even if Edwards-Helaire maintains his newfound role against the Jets next Sunday, this week's volume of touches is unlikely to repeat in more-competitive matchups.
Sep 20, 2023
Gets three touches Week 2
Edwards-Helaire carried once for zero yards and secured his two targets for 17 receiving yards in Sunday's 17-9 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
For the second week in a row, Edwards-Helaire finished a distant third behind Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon among the Chiefs' running backs in both snaps (10) and touches (three). Edwards-Helaire is unlikely to move up the pecking order while all three backs are available, but he could have a chance at securing a larger role if the hamstring injury that is keeping Pacheco out of practice Wednesday prevents him from playing this weekend against the Bears.
Sep 17, 2023
Suits up versus Jaguars
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
An illness prevented Edwards-Helaire from practicing Wednesday and Friday, but he'll be available Sunday to work in a complementary role in a Week 2 backfield that figures to be led by Isiah Pacheco, with Jerick McKinnon on hand to provide pass-catching/change of-pace support. In that context, Edwards-Helaire profiles as a hit-or-miss fantasy option versus Jacksonville.
Sep 15, 2023
Questionable after DNP on Friday
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Jacksonville after being unable to practice Friday.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire didn't practice Wednesday or Friday, but he logged a full session Thursday in between. Per Adam Teicher of ESPN, Kansas City will likely promote either La'Mical Perine or Deneric Prince from the practice squad to join lead back Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon in the backfield if Edwards-Helaire is unable to suit up Sunday.
Sep 14, 2023
Ready to play Week 2
Edwards-Helaire (illness) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire sat out Wednesday's session entirely while he was under the weather, but after taking every rep in practice a day later, he's good to go for Sunday's game at Jacksonville. In the Chiefs' season-opening loss to the Lions, Edwards-Helaire was the third man in Kansas City's backfield committee, playing 14 snaps and carrying six times for 22 yards and adding a seven-yard reception while Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon logged 29 and 19 touches, respectively. Edwards-Helaire will likely be ticketed for a limited change-of-pace role once again Week 2.
Sep 14, 2023
Returning to practice
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is slated to return to practice Thursday, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
ANALYSIS
An illness kept Edwards-Helaire out of Wednesday's practice, but the running back's looming return to the field has him on track to be available Sunday against the Jaguars. In the Chiefs' Week 1 loss to the Lions, Edwards-Helaire logged 14 snaps, while Isiah Pacheco was out there for 31 snaps and Jerick McKinnon recorded 20. In the process, Edwards-Helaire carried six times for 22 yards and caught one pass for seven yards.
Sep 13, 2023
Feeling sick Wednesday
Edwards-Helaire (illness) isn't practicing Wednesday, Matt McMuller of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire still has plenty of time to recover before the Chiefs play in Jacksonville on Sunday. He had six carries and once catch in the team's Week 1 loss to the Lions, working behind Isiah Pacheco along with Jerick McKinnon.
Sep 8, 2023
Records 29 total yards in loss
Edwards-Helaire rushed six times for 22 yards and secured his only target for seven yards in the Chiefs' 21-20 loss to the Lions on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire trailed backfield mate Isiah Pacheco by two carries, and neither back was able to find any appreciable running room against what appears to be an improved Lions run defense. The 24-year-old seems set to operate in a complementary role to Pacheco this season and perhaps share some pass-catching duties with Jerick McKinnon, but it will be interesting to see how the timeshare on early downs continues to evolve during a Week 2 road matchup against the Jaguars a week from Sunday.
Aug 26, 2023
Gets first opportunity again
Edwards-Helaire carried the ball one time for -3 yards in Saturday's 33-32 preseason win over the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was the first back on the field and got a carry on Kansas City's first offensive play. That was his only opportunity, though it was still noteworthy given that both Jerick McKinnon and Isaiah Pacheco also suited up and took the field. All three backs mixed in on the Chiefs' opening possession, suggesting that the backfield could be a rotation to begin the regular season.
Aug 20, 2023
First back with touch Saturday
Edwards-Helaire rushed four times for 10 yards and brought in both targets for eight yards in the Chiefs' 38-10 preseason win over the Cardinals on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was the first Chiefs back to log a touch Saturday and finished second in carries overall. However, La'Mical Perine (6-41), Deneric Prince (6-20-1) and even Jerick McKinnon (1-19) were all more productive on a per-touch basis. Nevertheless, Edwards-Helaire figures to retain a solid early-down role alongside Isiah Pacheco (hand/shoulder) once the regular season begins.
Aug 13, 2023
Garners five touches
Edwards-Helaire rushed three times for seven yards and caught both of his targets for 15 yards in Sunday's 26-24 preseason loss to the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire started at tailback with Isiah Pacheco (hand/shoulder) sitting out Kansas City's exhibition opener. The 2020 first-round pick collected all of his touches on Kansas City's first two drives before Deneric Prince took over tailback duties, rushing four times for 14 yards. With Jerick McKinnon also on the roster, the defending Super Bowl champs boast a strong stable of running backs heading into the upcoming campaign.
May 2, 2023
Option not picked up
Kansas City declined Edwards-Helaire's fifth-year option for 2024, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Injuries have prevented Edwards-Helaire from building on a rookie season in which he led the team with 803 rushing yards. During the 2022 campaign, the 2020 first-rounder lost the starting job to seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco and rushed for just 302 yards in 10 games before suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 11 against the Chargers, ending his regular season. Edwards-Helaire's fifth-year option would have been fully guaranteed at $5.46 million, but now he's a candidate to enter free agency in 2024. He figures to work behind Pacheco in a Kansas City backfield that also includes Jerick McKinnon, who the team re-signed Tuesday.

Option not picked up
The Chiefs declined Edwards-Helaire's fifth-year option for 2024, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Injuries have prevented Edwards-Helaire from building on his rookie season when he led the team with 803 rushing yards. During the 2022 campaign, the 2020 first-rounder lost the starting job to seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco and rushed for just 302 yards in 10 games before suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 11 against the Chargers that ended his regular season. Edwards-Helaire's fifth-year option would have been fully guaranteed at $5.46 million, but now he's a candidate to enter free agency in 2024. This coming season, he figures to work behind Pacheco in a Kansas City backfield that also includes Jerick McKinnon, who the team re-signed Tuesday.

Unlikely to get fifth-year option
Chiefs GM Brett Veach said Thursday that the team will wait until after the NFL Draft to make a decision on Edwards-Helaire's fifth-year option, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's possible the Chiefs have already made a decision internally, as it seems unlikely they'd pick up the option after the 2020 first-round pick missed 14 regular-season games the past two years and saw his role diminished even when healthy in 2022. That doesn't mean Edwards-Helaire can't be part of the team's backfield plan for 2023, but it does mean the Chiefs are unlikely to guarantee him a $5.46 million salary for 2024. The fifth-year-option deadline for 2020 first-rounders is May 3, four days after the conclusion of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Feb 12, 2023
Sitting out Super Bowl
Edwards-Helaire (coach's decision) is listed as inactive for Super Bowl LVII against the Eagles on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sidelined since suffering a high-ankle sprain Week 11, Edwards-Helaire had a chance to return to action for the Super Bowl when the Chiefs activated him from injured reserve Monday. That said, the team will continue to roll with the combination of Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon out of the backfield, relegating Edwards-Helaire to a healthy scratch Sunday. Behind Pacheco and McKinnon, Ronald Jones also will be available to Kansas City's offense.
Feb 6, 2023
Comes off IR ahead of Super Bowl
The Chiefs activated Edwards-Helaire (ankle) off the injured reserve list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Kansas City placed Mecole Hardman (pelvis) on IR in a corresponding move. Edwards-Helaire last saw game action Week 11, but he's managed to return from his high-ankle sprain with roughly a week left to practice ahead of Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12. Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon have been impactful as the Chiefs' backfield leaders since Edwards-Helaire's initial injury, so it remains to be seen how touches will be distributed in the big game versus Philadelphia. The extent of Edwards-Helaire's participation in practice could be telling as to his potential workload.
Jan 29, 2023
Still on IR
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) wasn't activated from IR ahead of Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
With Edwards-Helaire, who last saw game action in Week 11, still unavailable, Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon are in line to continue to pace Kansas City's ground game versus Cincinnati. Edwards-Helaire will thus next target a potential return to action if the Chiefs are able to advance to the Super Bowl.
Jan 25, 2023
Has a chance to play Sunday
Coach Andy Reid noted Wednesday that "there's a chance" Edwards-Helaire (ankle) could come off IR ahead of Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Bengals, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire, who hasn't played since suffering a high-ankle sprain during Week 11 action, appears to be inching toward a potential return to the mix as soon as this weekend. If he's available Sunday, Edwards-Helaire would bolster a Kansas City backfield that's been led of late by Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon.
Jan 20, 2023
Staying on IR for divisional round
The Chiefs didn't activate Edwards-Helaire (ankle) from injured reserve ahead of Saturday's divisional-round game against the Jaguars, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
On Tuesday, Edwards-Helaire mixed into drills for the first time since sustaining a high-ankle sprain Week 11. Getting designated for return from IR gave the third-year pro a chance to get back on Kansas City's active roster, but coach Andy Reid quelled that notion Thursday, telling Nate Taylor of The Athletic that the team was unlikely to make such a transaction. Because that has come to pass, Edwards-Helaire will remain sidelined while Isiah Pacheco, Jerick McKinnon and Ronald Jones man the backfield.
Jan 19, 2023
Unlikely to return Saturday
Coach Andy Reid said Thursday that the Chiefs are "probably not" activating Edwards-Helaire (ankle) from injured reserve ahead of Saturday's divisional-round game against the Jaguars, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire has been sidelined since sustaining a high-ankle sprain back in Week 11, missing the final seven contests of the regular season as a result. After the team's first-round bye, he finally returned to practice Tuesday, but it appears he isn't quite healthy enough to get back on the active roster. Ultimately, Kansas City has until 4:00 p.m. ET on Friday to make such a decision. In the meantime, Isiah Pacheco, Jerick McKinnon and Ronald Jones will continue to man the Chiefs backfield.
Jan 17, 2023
Resumes practicing
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) will practice Tuesday and has been designated for return from injured reserve, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire has been sidelined since late November after suffering a high-ankle sprain in the Chiefs' Week 11 game against the Chargers, but following nearly two months of recovery, he's now preparing for a return to the field. In Edwards-Helaire's absences, the Chiefs have gotten quality production from the running back tandem of Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon, so Kansas City may not be eager to rush the 2020 first-round pick back into action following a lengthy layoff. Even if Edwards-Helaire isn't activated from IR ahead of the divisional-round game against the Jaguars on Saturday, the Chiefs would still have up to two more weeks to evaluate him practice before adding him back to the 53-man roster.
Dec 20, 2022
Won't return Week 16
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday that Edwards-Helaire (ankle) won't be activated from injured reserve ahead of Saturday's game against the Seahawks, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports. "He's getting close. He's not quite there yet, but he is getting close," Reid said of Edwards-Helaire. "He's working his tail off, but we'll see. He won't be out there this week."
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was placed on IR in mid-November and is now eligible to return to the 53-man roster after missing the requisite four games, but the running back apparently hasn't progressed enough in his recovery from the high-ankle sprain to make it back for Week 16. Until the Chiefs designate him for return from IR -- which would open up a 21-day window wherein he can be evaluated during practice -- Edwards-Helaire's return to the lineup shouldn't be viewed as imminent. Even if Edwards-Helaire is able to make it back for Week 17 or Week 18, he may find himself third in the backfield pecking order behind Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon. Pacheco has averaged a respectable 4.5 yards per carry as the Chiefs' lead option on the ground during Edwards-Helaire's four-game absence, and McKinnon has accounted for five touchdowns and has averaged 5.2 yards per carry and 8.7 yards per target over that same stretch while serving as a change-of-pace option.
Nov 23, 2022
Placed on IR
The Chiefs placed Edwards-Helaire (ankle) on injured reserve Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire will miss a minimum of four games while he receovers from a high ankle sprain, with Week 16 against Seattle representing the earliest possible date for a return. Isiah Pacheco had supplanted him in the Kansas City backfield in recent weeks anyway, but Edwards-Helaire still had a role off the bench before injuring his ankle in the second quarter of Sunday's win over the Chargers. It'll be Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon leading the way for the Chiefs the next month, and Ronald Jones may also get some chances for the first time all year.
Nov 23, 2022
Slated to go on IR
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) is in line to be placed on IR, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Look for the move to be made official later Wednesday, with Edwards-Helaire now in line to miss at least four games with a high ankle sprain. In his absence, Isiah Pacheco is slated to lead the Chiefs' ground game, with Jerick McKinnon on hand work in in a complementary/change-of-pace role.
Nov 21, 2022
Dealing with high ankle sprain
Edwards-Helaire sustained a high ankle sprain Sunday night against the Chargers, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that Edwards-Helaire left the locker room Sunday with his right ankle in a walking boot, with the running back's status cloudy as this weekend's game against the Rams approaches. Even before injuring his ankle, Edwards-Helaire had been seeing a decreased workload, and if he misses time Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon would be in line to continue to lead Kansas City's backfield.
Nov 20, 2022
Sidelined by ankle injury
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) won't return to Sunday's game against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire had two carries for nine yards before getting hurt. He was ruled out at halftime. Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon will continue to split snaps in a Chiefs backfield that had largely phased out Edwards-Helaire prior to the injury.
Nov 14, 2022
Takes season-low four snaps in win
Edwards-Helaire played a season-low four snaps and didn't log a carry while failing to haul in either of his targets in Sunday's 27-17 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
For the third game in a row, Edwards-Helaire ceded the start at running back to Isiah Pacheco, but Sunday marked the first time the latter took on anything resembling a starter's workload. With Pacheco getting off to a nice start to Sunday's game, head coach Andy Reid relied on him more heavily, with the Rutgers product finishing with 16 carries for 82 yards while playing 56 percent of the snaps. Edwards-Helaire, meanwhile, nearly fell out of the game plan entirely, while Jerick McKinnon (37 percent snap share, six receptions for 56 yards on eight targets) retained a role as the Chiefs' primary passing-down back. Given that Pacheco's strong outing perhaps only further solidified himself as the Chiefs' top option on early downs, Edwards-Helaire looks like he could find himself third in the pecking order for snaps out of the backfield moving forward.
Nov 7, 2022
Held to 19 yards on five touches
Edwards-Helaire rushed four times for five yards and caught one of two targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 20-17 overtime win over Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
The Chiefs continued to deploy a three-pronged rushing attack, splitting the work fairly evenly between Edwards-Helaire, Jerick McKinnon and Isiah Pacheco. Unlike their last game, the trio failed to get anything going on the ground (14 combined rushing yards), and McKinnon was the only back to contribute anything meaningful as a receiver (six receptions for 40 yards). While it is tough to trust Edwards-Helaire after Sunday's dud, he does appear to still be the team's short-yardage back heading into a softer matchup against the Jaguars.
Oct 23, 2022
Still productive after demotion
Edwards-Helaire rushed six times for 32 yards and failed to bring in his lone target in Sunday's 44-23 win over the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
It was reported before the game that Isiah Pacheco (8-43-0) would get the start over Edwards-Helaire, but that the latter would remain involved in the gameplan. That held true for the most part, and both backs performed well despite seeing single-digit touches. CEH has been inconsistent at times, but the overall results have been solid through two-plus seasons, so it is a bit surprising that he was demoted so suddenly. Kansas City is about to head into its bye week, so perhaps the team will shed more light on its backfield situation in the coming weeks. Fantasy managers should hang onto Edwards-Helaire through his bye if possible, because he can retain fantasy value even as the backup in a committee backfield of a potent offense.

Could yield Week 7 start
Edwards-Helaire's teammate Isiah Pacheco is a candidate to start Sunday's game against the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that Pacheco took first-team reps in practice this week and is expected to draw the start Sunday, with Edwards-Helaire maintaining a key role in Kansas City's offense and Jerick McKinnon mixing in. Per Rapoport, both Pacheco and Edwards-Helaire are expected to see significant snaps against the 49ers, so Edwards-Helaire still figures to factor in, but the looming possibility that Pacheco (who logged just two carries in Week 6) assumes a larger role in Week 7 threatens Edwards-Helaire's fantasy ceiling.
Oct 16, 2022
Held in check by Buffalo
Edwards-Helaire carried the ball nine times for 33 yards in Sunday's 24-20 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
The Kansas City running game got stifled by the Buffalo front seven, but Edwards-Helaire also wasn't able to add any value through the air as he failed to even see a target for the first time this season. The running back does have five TDs through six games, but he could struggle to get into the end zone or gain much yardage in Week 7 against the 49ers' tough run defense.
Oct 11, 2022
Role slips in victory
Edwards-Helaire rushed the ball nine times for 15 yards in Monday's 30-29 win over the Raiders. He added three receptions on four targets for 20 yards.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire narrowly out-carried Jerick McKinnon 9-8, but he failed to get anything going on the ground. As has been the case throughout the season, Edwards-Helaire was more impressive as a receiver, and he managed multiple receptions for the fourth time in five games. He appeared to have a seven-yard touchdown reception midway through the second quarter, but he was ruled down at the one-yard line upon further review. While that would have improved his stat line, Edwards-Helaire's usage as a bellcow in Week 4 appears to be an outlier, as he now has fewer than 10 carries in all but one game on the campaign.
Oct 3, 2022
Scores two touchdowns in win
Edwards-Helaire rushed 19 times for 92 yards and a touchdown while catching one pass for two yards and another score in Sunday's 41-31 win over the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire finally broke out after losing touches to other rushing options in Kansas City. Game script played a big role, as the Chiefs were up big from practically the opening kickoff (that was fumbled away by Tampa Bay). Still, this was the type of game that fantasy managers were hoping for from the third-year back following the departure of Tyreek Hill this past offseason. Isiah Pacheco (11 carries for 63 yards) appeared to have leap-frogged the struggling Jerick McKinnon as CEH's primary backup, so a shared backfield approach should continue in Kansas City. Edwards-Helaire will ride this high into a favorable matchup against the Raiders next Sunday.
Sep 25, 2022
Only yardage comes through air
Edwards-Helaire rushed seven times for no gain and secured all five targets for 39 yards in the Chiefs' 20-17 loss to the Colts on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire had an exact split with Jerick McKinnon with respect to carries, but only the latter actually netted any positive yardage. CEH did make up for the lack of rushing production with a co-team-high reception tally, and he's quickly compiled 12 receptions in three games. Edwards-Helaire has yet to log double-digit carries, however, and he could well be in a fairly even timeshare again with McKinnon in a Week 4 road battle against the Buccaneers.
Sep 15, 2022
Garners 118 total yards in win
Edwards-Helaire rushed eight times for 74 yards and brought in all four targets for 44 yards in the Chiefs' 27-24 win over the Chargers on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire made several impressive plays in the passing game and then ripped off a game-long 52-yard run while also drawing a 15-yard face mask penalty on the first play of the Chiefs' penultimate possession to help set up a critical field goal. The third-year back has just 15 carries through two games, but with those totes netting 116 yards and another 77 yards and a pair of scores through the air, Edwards-Helaire has still afforded fantasy managers meaningful production through his first two games. He'll aim to keep churning out strong numbers in a Week 3 road clash with the Colts a week from Sunday.
Sep 11, 2022
Finds end zone twice against Cards
Edwards-Helaire carried the ball seven times for 42 yards while catching all three of his targets for 32 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 44-21 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
The running back didn't end up being Kansas City's leading rusher -- that honor went to rookie Isiah Pacheco -- but Edwards-Helaire's contributions as a receiver more than made up for it. The third-year player came into 2022 with only three career receiving TDs in 23 NFL games, but with the team's passing game promising to be more spread out in the wake of Tyreek Hill's departure, Edwards-Helaire could have a much bigger role through the air this season.
Aug 20, 2022
First RB into Saturday's game
Edwards-Helaire got the start in Saturday's 24-14 preseason win over Washington and rushed twice for four yards.
ANALYSIS
Fullback Michael Burton got the game's first carry, but the next two both went to Edwards-Helaire. The team electing to start Edwards-Helaire can be viewed as affirmation of his status as the lead back in an otherwise murky Chiefs backfield. After Edwards-Helaire played the first drive alongside Patrick Mahomes, rookie Isiah Pacheco got the entirety of the second possession with the starting quarterback, rushing four times for eight yards.
Aug 2, 2022
First through rotation
Edwards-Helaire has taken the first rep on almost every series at training camp, with Jerick McKinnon typically next through the rotation with the first-team offense, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweeney notes that Ronald Jones, Isiah Pacheco and Derrick Gore have mixed in "from time to time" with the starters. Edwards-Helaire was on the PUP list to start camp, but only for a day, and he's still on track for a Week 1 start for the third time in three pro seasons. There is question about his ability to hold on to that role, with Jones providing competition for early downs and goal-line work, while McKinnon may be preferred in obvious passing situations. McKinnon outsnapped CEH three-to-one in KC's final two playoff games last season, albeit with Edwards-Helaire's ailing shoulder a considerable factor in that distribution. The 2020 first-round pick is still the favorite to lead the Chiefs in carries this year, even if the dreams of a three-down workhorse role are all but gone.
Jul 27, 2022
Brief stint on PUP list over
The Chiefs activated Edwards-Helaire (undisclosed) from the active/physically unable to perform list Wednesday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire's stay on the PUP list to begin training camp ultimately only lasted one day, and he's already resumed practicing Wednesday. The 23-year-old is looking to get the most out of the first unrestricted offseason of his NFL career, after COVID-19 protocols made preparations for his rookie campaign mostly virtual, and gallbladder surgery set him back last offseason. Throughout training camp, the 2020 first-round pick should receive plenty of opportunities to solidify himself as the lead option in a revamped backfield that also houses Ronald Jones, Jerick McKinnon, Isiah Pacheco, Derrick Gore and Tayon Fleet-Davis.
Jul 27, 2022
Practicing Wednesday
Edwards-Helaire (undisclosed) is participating in Wednesday's training camp session, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was added to the active/physically unable to perform list Tuesday, but it looks like his stay will be a brief one. The Chiefs haven't yet officially activated Edwards-Helaire from the PUP list, but his participation in practice is a likely indication that such a move is coming. The 2020 first-round pick's fantasy prospects would stand to benefit if he's able to stay healthy and impress during training camp.
Jul 26, 2022
Could come off PUP list soon
Edwards-Helaire (undisclosed) could come off the PUP list in the next few days, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Though the nature of Edwards-Helaire's injury has yet to be clarified, Taylor relays that he's be told the running back's issue is nothing major. For now, Ronald Jones, Jerick McKinnon, Isiah Pacheco, Derrick Gore and Tayon Fleet-Davis are slated to handle the Chiefs' backfield reps at the start of training camp.
Jul 26, 2022
Starting camp on PUP list
The Chiefs have placed Edwards-Helaire (undisclosed) on the active/physically unable to perform list, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Added clarity on Edwards-Helaire's injury or issue could come as soon as Wednesday, with coach Andy Reid slated to address reporters, per Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star. Minus Edwards-Helaire, Ronald Jones, Jerick McKinnon, Isiah Pacheco, Derrick Gore and Tayon Fleet-Davis are available to handle Kansas City's backfield reps for the time being.
Jul 21, 2022
Hopes to benefit from full offseason
As he approaches his third NFL campaign, Edwards-Helaire believes that he'll benefit from getting in a full offseason of work for the first time in his pro career, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports. "This offseason, it was pretty much getting back to the basics, being able to have a full offseason," Edwards-Helaire noted. "That was one of the things Coach (Andy) Reid and I talked about. He said, 'This is really your first real offseason in the NFL.' Really, health was the biggest thing."
ANALYSIS
As a rookie in 2020, Edwards-Helaire's first NFL offseason was mostly virtual due to the league's COVID-19 protocols, while last offseason the running back dealt with gallbladder surgery. At this stage, Edwards-Helaire indicated that he feels great heading into training camp, as he looks to move past the injuries (to his left knee and left collarbone) that slowed him in 2021. Looking ahead, the 23-year-old is projected to lead a backfield that also includes Ronald Jones, Jerick McKinnon, Derrick Gore and Isiah Pacheco, though Taylor does suggest that with a strong effort this summer, Jones could challenge Edwards-Helaire for the starting job in a Kansas City offense that will be operating without playmaking wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who was traded to Miami in March.
Mar 29, 2022
Backfield depth added
The Chiefs have signed Ronald Jones to work in tandem with Edwards-Helaire this coming season, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Signing Jones addresses a void in the team's backfield, with Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon still unsigned in free agency. The former Buccaneer will now pair with Edwards-Helaire, creating the potential for a time-share that could hamper the weekly volume of the duo, when both are available. That said, in an offense that will no longer have explosive wideout Tyreek Hill to throw to, it's plausible that the Chiefs running backs, including Edwards-Helaire, will be presented with more receiving opportunities in 2022. Though it's possible that the team will continue to bring in additional skill players via free agency and/or the draft, for now things are set up for Edwards-Helaire and Jones to compete for RB slotting this summer.
Jan 30, 2022
Just seven touches in playoff loss
Edwards-Helaire rushed six times for 36 yards and added a four-yard catch on two targets in Sunday's 27-24 overtime loss to the Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire worked in a change-of-pace role behind Jerick McKinnon, who totaled 95 yards on 15 touches. McKinnon will be a free agent this offseason, but Edwards-Helaire -- who was selected in the first round of the 2020 draft -- has been unable to grab the leading role in Kansas City's backfield by the horns over his first two seasons. Given Edwards-Helaire's modest production, the Chiefs likely will bring in competition for touches this offseason, either by re-signing McKinnon or adding an alternative option via free agency or the draft.
Jan 24, 2022
Effective in return
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) rushed seven times for 60 yards and caught one of two targets for nine yards in Sunday's 42-36 overtime win over the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire looked spry in his first action since Week 16, mustering 69 scrimmage yards on just eight touches compared to Jerick McKinnon's 78 yards on 15 touches. McKinnon's the superior pass-catcher out of the backfield, but Edwards-Helaire has reestablished himself as the leading option on the ground for the pass-heavy Chiefs ahead of next week's AFC Championship Game against Cincinnati.
Jan 23, 2022
Back in action Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) will join Jerick McKinnon and Derrick Gore out of the Chiefs backfield for Sunday's divisional-round game against the Bills with Darrel Williams (toe) inactive, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Making his first appearance since Week 16 due to a bruised shoulder, Edwards-Helaire is swapping in for Williams, but the breakdown of touches between himself, McKinnon and Gore remains to be seen. McKinnon fared well in Kansas City's wild-card win against the Steelers, taking 12 carries for 61 yards and gathering in all six targets for 81 yards and one touchdown. On the season, though, Edwards-Helaire averaged 13.8 touches in his 10 appearances, so it stands to reason he'll have some sort of role.
Jan 21, 2022
No injury designation for Sunday's contest
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) doesn't carry an injury designation for Sunday night's playoff game against the Bills after practicing fully this past week.
ANALYSIS
The stage is thus set for Edwards-Helaire, who last saw game action in Week 16, to be available for Sunday's contest, while fellow running back Darrel Williams (toe) is listed as questionable by Kansas City after returning to a limited practice Friday. In Edwards-Helaire's looming return, it remains to be seen how much work he'll give, given that Jerick McKinnon, who led the team's backfield in the team's wild-card win over the Steelers last weekend -- and possibly Williams -- are also candidates to take snaps against Buffalo. Edwards-Helaire finished the regular season with 119 carries for 517 yards and four TDs to go along with 19 catches (on 23 targets) for 129 yards and a pair of receiving TDs in 10 games.
Jan 20, 2022
Another full practice
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) practiced fully again Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After having logged back-to-back full sessions Wednesday and Thursday, Edwards-Helaire appears on track to suit up Sunday against the Bills, barring any setbacks. Friday's final injury report will confirm whether Edwards-Helaire approaches the contest minus an injury designation, as well as add further context with regard to the status of fellow running back Darrel Williams (toe), who has yet to practice this week.
Jan 19, 2022
Returns to full practice
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) practiced fully Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire didn't practice this past Thursday and Friday before ultimately being ruled out for Kansas City's playoff opener, but the running back's return to a full session presumably paves the way for him to return to the field Sunday against the Bills, in the absence of any setbacks. With that in mind, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com relays that coach Andy Reid noted that Edwards-Helaire "moved around well" Wednesday, but reiterated that the real test for the 2020 first-rounder will come on Thursday.
Jan 14, 2022
Won't play in wild-card round
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid ruled Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) out for Sunday's wild-card game against the Steelers, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Following a two-game absence to close the regular season, the second-year back looked to be on the right track to suit up this weekend after he practiced Wednesday in a limited capacity, but his odds of playing dipped when he regressed to no practice participation Thursday. Edwards-Helaire won't be on the field for Friday's practice session either, prompting Reid to rule him out since his shoulder injury "wasn't quite as good" as the team expected following Wednesday's workout, per Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. Meanwhile, Darrel Williams (toe) is practicing Friday and is expected to be ready to play Sunday, leaving him in line to serve as Kansas City's lead back for the postseason opener.
Jan 14, 2022
Not spotted at practice
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) wasn't spotted during the brief media access portion of Friday's practice, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com and Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star report.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire didn't practice Thursday, so his absence from the early portion of Friday's session isn't the best sign with regard to his chances of suiting up for Sunday night's game against the Steelers. Friday's final injury report will add further context on that front as well as the status of fellow running back Darrel Williams (toe).
Jan 13, 2022
Misses practice
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) didn't participate in Thursday's practice, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was a limited participant Wednesday in the Chiefs' first practice of the week, so his absence a day later suggests the running back either received some extra maintenance or experienced a setback with his injured shoulder. If it's the latter case, Edwards-Helaire would likely be at major risk of missing his third straight game Sunday, when the Chiefs host the Steelers in the wild-card round. On a positive note, Darrel Williams (toe) was on the practice field again Thursday after joining Edwards-Helaire as a limited participant at Wednesday's session, so Kansas City should have at least one of its top two backs available for the start of the postseason.
Jan 12, 2022
Returns to limited practice
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) was listed as a limited practice participant Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to Darrel Williams (toe), with Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star relaying via coach Andy Reid that both backs "looked good" in practice Wednesday. Reid added that the team will continue evaluating the duo in the coming days, but at this stage both Edwards-Helaire and Williams appear to be trending in the right direction as Sunday night's game against the Steelers approaches.
Jan 12, 2022
Takes the field Wednesday
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) was spotted at practice Wednesday, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
As was Darrel Williams (toe), which bodes well for the chances of both backs being available for Sunday's playoff opener against the Steelers. That said, Edwards-Helaire -- who last suited up in Week 16 -- will probably need to practice fully by Friday in order to avoid heading into the weekend with an injury designation.
Jan 10, 2022
Progressing in recovery
Coach Andy Reid said Monday that Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) is making progress in his recovery, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was inactive for Saturday's regular-season finale after he was unable to practice ahead of Week 18, but Reid said that he expects the running back to get some work in ahead of Sunday's wild-card matchup against Pittsburgh. Whether the 22-year-old will be cleared for game action in time for the postseason opener remains to be seen, but Darrel Williams would be in line for a lead role once again if Edwards-Helaire is unavailable.
Jan 6, 2022
Ruled out for Week 18
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) has been ruled out for Saturday's regular-season finale against the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire, who was inactive in Week 17, was unable to practice this week and he'll now focus on returning to Kansas City's lineup in time for the team's postseason opener. In his continued absence, Darrel Williams is slated to head the Chiefs' backfield this weekend, with Derrick Gore working in a complementary role and Jerick McKinnon in reserve.
Jan 6, 2022
Not in line to play Week 18
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) won't practice Thursday and is unlikely to play Saturday against the Broncos, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After he was diagnosed with a bruised shoulder/collarbone following his early exit in the Chiefs' Week 16 win over the Steelers, Edwards-Helaire didn't practice in any fashion last week before being listed as questionable heading into the team's Week 17 game against the Bengals. He was ultimately inactive for the 34-31 loss, but the Chiefs had hope the second-year back might be available for the regular-season finale. Ultimately, Edwards-Helaire looks set to miss his second straight game after again failing to practice this week, paving the way for Darrel Williams to get another turn as the Chiefs' lead back. Later Thursday, Kansas City will release its final Week 18 injury report, which will whether Edwards-Helaire is listed as questionable, doubtful or out heading into Saturday's game.
Jan 5, 2022
Misses another practice
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) didn't practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
He missed every practice last week and now has sat out Tuesday and Wednesday in Week 18, leaving only Thursday as his final chance for participation. If Edwards-Helaire ends up missing a second straight game, Darrel Williams likely will be called on again as KC's lead back, coming off a big game last week with 107 total yards and two TDs.
Jan 4, 2022
Not practicing to begin Week 18
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) didn't practice Tuesday, but head coach Andy Reid said the running back still has a chance to play in Saturday's game in Denver, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In order to have a realistic shot at suiting up this weekend, Edwards-Helaire will almost certainly need to fit in some practice activity, so what he's able to do Wednesday or Thursday will go a long way toward determining his status. While Edwards-Helaire missed his sixth game of the season in the Chiefs' Week 17 loss to Cincinnati, Darrel Williams (14 carries for 88 yards and two touchdowns, three catches for 19 yards) filled a lead role out of the backfield.
Jan 1, 2022
Ruled out for Week 17
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
With Edwards-Helaire not in line to travel with the team, look for Darrel Williams and Derrick Gore to head Kansas City's Week 17 backfield, with Jerick McKinnon (hamstring) a candidate to mix in as well, after having been activated from IR in advance of Sunday's contest.
Dec 31, 2021
Officially questionable for Week 17
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Though Edwards-Helaire was unable to practice this past week, at this stage coach Andy Reid isn't ruling the running back out for Sunday's contest. If, however, Edwards-Helaire is deemed out or limited for Kansas City's 1:00 ET kickoff, added Week 17 opportunities would be available for Darrel Williams and Derrick Gore, while Jerick McKinnon (hamstring) is a candidate to be activated from IR by the team.
Dec 31, 2021
Misses practice, but not ruled out
Though Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) didn't practice again Friday, coach Andy Reid isn't ruling the running back out for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Reid noted that since Edwards-Helaire knows the playbook, it's possible he could suit up despite not practicing this week. If, however, Edwards-Helaire is unable to go this weekend, Kansas City could activate Jerick McKinnon (hamstring) from IR to bolster a backfield that also includes Darrel Williams and Derrick Gore.
Dec 30, 2021
Another DNP Thursdat
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) remained sidelined at practice Thursday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire has one last chance to practice in advance of Sunday's game against the Bengals, but if he ends up sitting out the contest, Kansas City's Week 17 backfield would be in line to be led by Darrel Williams and Derrick Gore.
Dec 29, 2021
Not practicing
Edwards-Helaire (shoulder) didn't practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
As expected, after Adam Schefter of ESPN suggested Monday that Edwards-Helaire would be considered week-to-week. The Chiefs haven't ruled him out for Sunday's game against Cincinnati, but he may need to practice Thursday and/or Friday in order to have a realistic chance. Darrel Williams and Derrick Gore will see more work out of the KC backfield if Edwards-Helaire can't go this week.
Dec 27, 2021
Considered week-to-week
Edwards-Helaire has been diagnosed with a bruised shoulder in the aftermath of Sunday's win against the Steelers and is considered week-to-week, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
What was initially believed to be a collarbone injury actually has been deemed to be his shoulder, which includes residual swelling. According to Schefter, it'll be tough for Edwards-Helaire to make himself available for Sunday's game at Cincinnati, but there is a possibility he'll be able to do so. Edwards-Helaire likely will need to join his teammates on the practice field at some point Wednesday through Friday to give himself a chance to play. In any case, the health concern isn't considered to be season-ending, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Darrel Williams and Derrick Gore will pick up the slack out of the Chiefs backfield if Edwards-Helaire is limited or out this weekend.
Dec 26, 2021
Injury actually to shoulder
The injury Edwards-Helaire sustained in Sunday's 36-10 win over the Steelers was actually to his shoulder, according to coach Andy Reid, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
The injury that forced Edwards-Helaire out of the game was initially reported as a collarbone injury. "We'll see tomorrow how bad it is," Reid said, suggesting that the running back is expected to undergo further tests on the injury Monday. Another update on Edwards-Helaire's shoulder should surface once the results of the additional testing come in.
Dec 26, 2021
Ruled out with collarbone injury
Edwards-Helaire (collarbone) will not return to Sunday's game against the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire's return was initially considered questionable, but he has now been ruled out for the rest of Sunday's contest. The team will provide more information regarding his status in the near future, and if he winds up missing more time, Darrel Williams will take over as the Chiefs' starting running back.
Dec 26, 2021
Exits with injury
Edwards-Helaire injured his collarbone in Sunday's game against the Steelers and is questionable to return.
ANALYSIS
The extent of Edwards-Helaire's injury is uncertain, but his status will be updated when more information is released. Darrel Williams is the next man up in the Chiefs' backfield, and Derrick Gore slots in on the depth chart after Williams.
Dec 17, 2021
Modest volume in win
Edwards-Helaire rushed nine times for 32 yards and brought in two of four targets for 18 yards in the Chiefs' 34-28 overtime win over the Chargers on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire paced the Chiefs backfield in rush attempts, but that wasn't saying much on a night when Kansas City trailed for significant chunks of the game and tilted heavily toward the pass in the second half and overtime. The second-year back was coming off a highly efficient 10-carry, two-touchdown effort against the Raiders in Week 14, and his rush-attempt tally was his lowest in a non-injury-shortened game all season. Edwards-Helaire's Week 16 prospects are relatively bright, however, as he'll face a Steelers defense that's increasingly struggled to stop the run as the season has unfolded.
Dec 12, 2021
Finds end zone twice
Edwards-Helaire recorded 10 carries for 37 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 48-9 win over the Raiders. He added three receptions for five yards .
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire saw the majority of his work in the first half, as he was limited to only three carries in the final two quarters due to Kansas City's massive lead in the game. He wasn't all that impressive -- his longest rush went for only seven yards -- but he managed to find the end zone twice from inside the 10-yard line. This was Edwards-Helaire's lowest yardage total since returning from injured reserve in Week 11, though he has three total touchdowns in that span.
Dec 6, 2021
Totals 82 yards in win
Edwards-Helaire (illness) rushed 14 times for 54 yards and had three receptions for 28 yards in Sunday's 22-9 win over the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was questionable leading up to Sunday with a non-COVID illness, but he was able to shake the ailment and start for the Chiefs. The 22-year-old continued to serve as lead back, out-touching Darrel Williams 17 to eight in a scrappy victory. Edwards-Helaire will look to break the century mark in total yards for the first time since Week 4 in a tasty matchup against the Raiders (21.1 fantasy points allowed to opposing running backs this year) next Sunday.
Dec 5, 2021
Playing in Week 13
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is listed as active Sunday against the Broncos, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was absent from Friday's practice due to an illness and entered the weekend with a questionable designation. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported earlier Sunday that Edwards-Helaire participated in a walkthrough session Saturday and was slated to be available for Week 13 action, which has come to pass. In the five contests in which he's handled at least 45 percent of the Chiefs' offensive snaps this season, Edwards-Helaire has averaged 15.8 touches for 83.4 yards from scrimmage per game while scoring three total TDs.
Dec 5, 2021
Expected to play Sunday night
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is expected to play Sunday night against the Broncos, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire missed Friday's practice with an illness, but was present for Saturday's walk-through which suggests that he should be available for the contest. Official confirmation of his Week 13 status will arrive approximately 90 minutes prior to Sunday's night's 8:20 ET kickoff.
Dec 3, 2021
Listed as questionable for SNF
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday night's game against the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Per Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star, Edwards-Helaire was added to Kansas City's Week 13 injury report after not practicing Friday due to a case of stomach flu. That said, report adds that coach Andy Reid indicated that Edwards-Helaire "should be fine" for Sunday night's 8:20 ET contest. If, however, Edwards-Helaire ends up limited or out this weekend, Darrel Williams would be in line to log added touches against Denver.
Nov 21, 2021
Scores in return to action
Edwards-Helaire carried the ball 12 times for 63 yards and a touchdown and caught both his targets for 13 yards in Sunday's 19-9 win over the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
It was a productive return from a five-game absence for the second-year RB, who reclaimed the starting role from Darrel Williams and scored his first rushing TD of the season on a one-yard plunge in the second quarter. Edwards-Helaire has had a tough season to date, but he still has time to post some big numbers on the other side of Kansas City's Week 12 bye.
Nov 21, 2021
Active in Week 11
Edwards-Helaire (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Cowboys, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was activated from injured reserve on Saturday after a stint that led to a total of five absences, the second-year back will officially make his return Sunday. How much work Edwards-Helaire splits with Darrel Williams remains to be seen, however, considering the Chiefs may opt to both ease the former back into action after a relatively long layoff and also keep the latter involved after he performed well as both runner and receiver over multiple games in recent weeks.

Activated, listed as questionable
Edwards-Helaire (knee) was activated from IR on Saturday. He's now listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
While Edwards-Helaire's questionable tag will make his status worth monitoring, he's expected to play, as the Chiefs would not have activated him if they didn't intend to use him Sunday. According to Ed Werder of ESPN, Edwards-Helaire is expected to start against Dallas, bur Darrel Williams will continue to have a role in the offense.
Nov 19, 2021
Could be back Week 11
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid didn't commit to Edwards-Helaire (knee) making his return from injured reserve for Sunday's game against the Cowboys, but he suggested the running back was trending toward being available for the contest, Charles Goldman of USA Today reports. "Yeah, I'll get with [Chiefs athletic trainer Rick Burkholder] here and just make sure that everything is OK," Reid said Friday. "We'll go from there, but [Edwards-Helaire] had a good week of practice."
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was practicing with the team for the second straight week, after the Chiefs initially designated him for return from IR on Nov. 10. The second-year back looks to be making good progress in his recovery from an MCL sprain of his left knee, but he won't be an option to play Sunday until the Chiefs activate him from IR prior to Saturday's 4 p.m. ET deadline for Week 11 roster moves. Though Edwards-Helaire served as Kansas City's lead back before suffering the knee injury Week 5, he could find himself as part of a timeshare at the position with Darrel Williams upon rejoining the 53-man roster.
Nov 17, 2021
Week 11 status TDB
Coach Andy Reid noted Wednesday that the team wants to see how Edwards-Helaire (knee) does in practice before making a decision on whether to activate the running back for Sunday's game against the Cowboys, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Edwards-Helaire is clearly trending in the right direction, Reid acknowledges that there's a chance the Chiefs could hold the running back out this weekend, with the team's upcoming bye in Week 12 in mind. If that ends up being the case, Darrel Williams would be in line to continue to head Kansas City's backfield in Week 11, with Jerick McKinnon and Derrick Gore available for change-of-pace/complementary duty.
Nov 15, 2021
Chance to return in Week 11
Coach Andy Reid said Monday that Edwards-Helaire (knee) has a "good chance" to return Sunday against the Cowboys, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was designated to return from injured reserve last week but was unable to suit up in the team's Week 10 win over the Raiders. However, Reid sounded more optimistic about the running back's status ahead of Sunday's matchup against Dallas. The 22-year-old made five appearances prior to sustaining his injury, and he logged 65 carries for 304 yards while hauling in eight of 10 targets for 61 yards and two touchdowns.
Nov 14, 2021
Officially out for Week 10
The Chiefs didn't activate Edwards-Helaire (knee) from injured reserve prior to Saturday's 4 p.m ET deadline for Week 10 roster moves, meaning he won't play Sunday against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Even though Edwards-Helaire resumed practicing this week when first eligible after missing the requisite three games, head coach Andy Reid admitted Friday that it was "probably a stretch" for the second-year running back to make it back for the matchup with the Raiders. With Edwards-Helaire not added back to the 53-man roster for Sunday's game, Darrel Williams once again looks on track to receive steady work on the ground while taking on most of the passing-down work for Kansas City. Assuming he turns in another good week of practice, Edwards-Helaire has a good shot at making it back for the Chiefs' next game Nov. 21 against the Cowboys.
Nov 12, 2021
Not likely to return Sunday
Coach Andy Reid noted Friday that Edwards-Helaire (knee) had a good week of practice, but "it's probably a stretch" for the running back to be activated from injured reserve prior to Sunday's game at Las Vegas, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
The Chiefs must make a decision to do so by 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, or else Edwards-Helaire will remain on IR for at least one more week. Because the team opened his 21-day practice window Wednesday, Reid and company have plenty of time to evaluate Edwards-Helaire as he recovers from a sprained left MCL suffered during a Week 5 loss to the Bills. Kansas City is on bye Week 12, so Edwards-Helaire could be held out until then to ensure he's healthy for the stretch run of the season. In the meantime, Darrel Williams will continue to handle early down reps, while Jerick McKinnon and Derrick Gore are on hand to spell him.
Nov 11, 2021
Impresses in return to practice
Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy indicated that Edwards-Helaire (knee) "looked great" at Wednesday's practice, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was designated to return from injured reserve Wednesday, which opened up a 21-day-window for the Chiefs to restore the running back to their active roster or leave him on IR. Based on Bieniemy's comments, Edwards-Helaire is headed in the right direction in advance of Sunday night's game against the Raiders, but it remains to be seen if he'll be activated in time for the contest or be brought along slowly by the team with a potential Week 11 return in mind.
Nov 10, 2021
Returns to practice
Edwards-Helaire returned to practice Wednesday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire will be designated to return from injured reserve, opening a 21-day window for the Chiefs to either reinstate him to the active roster or place him on IR for the rest of the year. The target date for a game appearance presumably is this Sunday in Las Vegas or Week 11 against Dallas, considering the Chiefs then have a bye in Week 12. Fill-in starter Darrel Williams has been functional for both the Chiefs and fantasy managers thanks to his pass catching and blocking, but he's averaging only 3.6 YPC for the season and 3.5 as a starter.
Nov 5, 2021
Not ready to come off IR
Coach Andy Reid relayed Friday that Edwards-Helaire (knee) is "closer" to a potential return from IR, but added "we'll have to see how time handles it here in the next couple of weeks," Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire, who is bouncing back from an MCL sprain, thus remains on IR in advance of Sunday's game against the Packers and his Week 10 status remains cloudy as well. In his continued absence this weekend, Darrel Williams and Derrick Gore are slated to head Kansas City's rushing attack versus Green Bay.
Nov 5, 2021
Still on IR
Edwards-Helaire (knee) remains on IR in advance of Sunday's game against the Packers, Charles Goldman of the USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
With Edwards-Helaire, who last suited up in Week 5, not yet having been designated to return from IR, Darrel Williams and Derrick Gore appear poised to head Kansas City's rushing attack in Week 9. In the team's 20-17 win over the Giants this past Monday, Williams logged 13 carries for 49 yards and caught six passes for 61 yards, while Gore ran 11 times for 48 yards and a TD.
Oct 3, 2021
Tops 100 yards again
Edwards-Helaire rushed 14 times for 102 yards while catching two of three targets for 12 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 42-30 win over Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire hit the 100-yard rushing mark and caught a touchdown for the second consecutive week, this time scoring from one yard out on a shovel pass from Patrick Mahomes. He still doesn't have a rushing touchdown this season, in large part due to Darrel Williams' prominent role in the red zone, and Williams vultured a one-yard rushing score in the third quarter among his 10 carries in this one. Five of Kansas City's six touchdowns in this one came through the air, but Edwards-Helaire remains the primary option on the ground in this high-powered offense heading into a Week 5 visit from the Bills.
Sep 26, 2021
Hits century mark in loss
Edwards-Helaire rushed 17 times for 100 yards and secured both targets for nine yards in the Chiefs' 30-24 loss to the Chargers on Sunday. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
The second-year back atoned for his pedestrian performances over the first two games of the season as far as the stat sheet is concerned, but his fumble early in the second quarter following a seven-yard gain set up the Chargers' second touchdown. The ball security issues aside, Edwards-Helaire looked explosive and impressive in his way to his first 100-yard rushing tally since Oct. 19 of last season. CEH will look to build on Sunday's momentum and stay away from putting the ball on the ground in a Week 4 road matchup against the Eagles.
Sep 20, 2021
Struggles on SNF
Edwards-Helaire rushed 13 times for 46 yards while losing a fumble in Sunday's 36-35 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
The Chiefs only dialed up 16 designed running plays for its backs (despite leading for the majority of the contest) after running 15 of those same plays in Week 1. It appears that offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy wants to keep the ball in his best player's hands, Patrick Mahomes, as much as possible this season, which seems like a smart move. It doesn't help that Edwards-Helaire isn't doing much with the limited touches he has been receiving (3.3 yards per carry). If this trend continues, then CEH's ceiling may be lower than many expected for 2021. Up next for the Chiefs is a divisional matchup against the Chargers next Sunday.
Sep 12, 2021
Held in check Sunday
Edwards-Helaire carried the ball 14 times for 43 yards and caught all three of his targets for 29 yards in Sunday's 33-29 win over the Browns.
ANALYSIS
The second-year back's longest run went for only nine yards, as the Browns' defense bottled things up on the ground. No other Kansas City back got more than one carry, however, so at least Edwards-Helaire is very clearly the top option in the backfield. Despite the floor provided by his touch volume, he could struggle to post better numbers on the road against the Ravens in Week 2.
Sep 8, 2021
Practices fully
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) practiced fully Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star previously relayed that Edwards-Helaire declared himself "ready to go" for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Browns, a notion solidified by the running back's full practice participation Wednesday. Heading into Week 1, Edwards-Helaire is on track to head Kansas City's rushing attack versus Cleveland, backed up by Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon.
Sep 8, 2021
Says he's ready for Week 1
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) has declared himself "ready to go" for Sunday's regular season opener against the Browns, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
The running back, who also noted that he's "100 percent" healthy at this stage, is thus in line to head Kansas City's backfield in Week 1, backed up by Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon. Added context with regard to Edwards-Helaire's status will arrive later Wednesday, when the team reveals whether he was a full participant in practice.
Sep 6, 2021
Trending toward playing in Week 1
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) practiced last week and is trending toward being available for Sunday's season opener against the Browns, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to fellow running back Darrel Williams (head), with coach Andy Reid noting Monday with regard to the duo's Week 1 status, "I think we'll be OK there." Added context with regard to Edwards-Helaire's progress will arrive no later than Wednesday, when Kansas City's first regular-season practice/injury report is submitted. Assuming he suits up Sunday, Edwards-Helaire is poised to lead the team's rushing attack, with Williams and Jerick McKinnon on hand to work in complementary/reserve roles.
Aug 27, 2021
Trending toward DNP
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) isn't in uniform ahead of Friday's preseason game against the Vikings, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire emerged from preseason Week 2 with a sprained ankle, which coach Andy Reid said didn't appear to be of the high-ankle variety, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. No matter, the injury kept Edwards-Helaire out of practice in the interim, according to Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star. If both Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams (head) are sidelined Friday, the Chiefs will be down to RBs Jerick McKinnon, Darwin Thompson and Derrick Gore and FB Michael Burton out of the backfield.
Aug 21, 2021
Likely avoids high ankle issue
Coach Andy Reid relayed that the injury Edwards-Helaire suffered Friday night against the Cardinals "doesn't look like a high-ankle sprain," Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Reid added that the running back will have his right ankle double-checked, but for now it looks like Edwards-Helaire has avoided the more troublesome high-ankle variety of sprain. That said, Kansas City could elect to play it safe with their top back in the team's preseason finale this coming Friday, with an eye toward having Edwards-Helaire healthy for Week 1.
Aug 20, 2021
Sprains ankle Friday
Edwards-Helaire sprained his ankle during Friday's preseason win in Arizona, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards yielded RB reps to Darrel Williams during the first drive of the contest, but the Chiefs didn't reveal the reason for his abrupt departure until postgame. According to the team, Edwards-Helaire's sprain is on the inside of his ankle, with tests to come to reveal the extent of the injury. It's unclear if he'll miss any time, but with Williams also leaving shortly after Edwards-Helaire to be evaluated for a concussion, Kansas City is down to three healthy running backs (Jerick McKinnon, Darwin Thompson and Derrick Gore) at the moment.
Aug 20, 2021
Garners 23 total yards in win
Edwards-Helaire rushed three times for 13 yards and secured his only target for 10 yards in the Chiefs' 17-10 preseason win over the Cardinals on Friday night.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was productive in what could well be his last tune-up for the regular season, looking good while generating seven- and five-yard gains on the Chiefs' 15-play, 57-yard first-quarter drive. The second-year back will look to build on a solid rookie season in which he garnered 1,100 total yards and five total touchdowns, and he should have a clear shot and holding on to lead-back duties throughout the campaign if he's healthy.
Aug 15, 2021
Generates 21 yards
Edwards-Helaire rushed four times for 16 yards and caught his lone target for five yards in Saturday's 19-16 preseason win over the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire got off to a hot start with a 10-yard gain on the Chiefs' first play of the game. He totaled just six yards on his next three carries, and his night was finished after just two series. The 2020 first-round pick likely will have a cap on his preseason reps if he even dresses for either of the next two games, as he has the starting role locked up.
Aug 12, 2021
In line to play Saturday
Coach Andy Reid implied Edwards-Helaire and the rest of the starters will play the first quarter of Saturday's preseason opener at San Francisco, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Reid didn't name any of the aforementioned starters, but if Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce make earlier than expected departures Edwards-Helaire likely will join the trio on the sideline. But the plan laid out by Reid specifically mentioned the first-stringers will play the first quarter, the second team in the second quarter, third-teamers in the third quarter and the rest of the roster in the fourth.
Jul 6, 2021
Expecting more targets
Edwards-Helaire and QB Patrick Mahomes both have suggested the Chiefs should throw more passes to running backs this season, ESPN's Adam Teicher reports.
ANALYSIS
Mahomes also mentioned Jerick McKinnon, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson as pass-catching options out of the backfield, but it's Edwards-Helaire who figures to play the most snaps and run the most routes. The second-year pro reportedly focused on improving his receiving skills this offseason, after catching only 36 of 54 targets (66.7 percent) for 297 yards (5.5 YPT) and one touchdown in his debut campaign. Edwards-Helaire caught 55 passes his senior season at LSU, with his work in that area seemingly playing a big role in the Chiefs' decision to draft him with the 32nd overall pick. As such, the 22-year-old back still has a shot to earn a three-down role, though Williams and McKinnon would also be reasonable picks to handle obvious passing downs. The team's running backs accounted for 18.2 percent of the total targets last year, the 16th-highest rate in the league. That number was slightly lower in Mahomes' first season as a starter (2018 - 16.9 percent) and slightly higher in his second year (2019 - 19.9

Leads backfield in Super Bowl loss
Edwards-Helaire had nine carries for 64 yards during Kansas City's 31-9 loss to Tampa Bay during Super Bowl LV. He also secured two of three targets for 23 yards.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire resurfaced as the clear No. 1 back while Darrel Williams (two carries) and Le'Veon Bell (zero touches) were relegated to backup duties, but with the Chiefs playing from behind almost from start to finish, he wasn't afforded many opportunities. Williams (seven targets) did see more action in the passing game than Edwards-Helaire, but he also had a costly drop in the third quarter on a would-be touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes. All things said, Edwards-Helaire put together a healthy rookie season, with 181 carries for 803 yards (4.4 YPC) and four scores across 13 regular-season games, in addition to 36 catches (54 targets) and one touchdown through the air. However, his production scarcely lived up to the first-round draft capital that was required to grab him in most fantasy leagues. After apparently breaking out with 161 rushing yards against the Bills in Week 6, Edwards-Helaire failed to break the 50-yard mark on the ground in all but two of his remaining seven contests. There's no questio

Upgrades to full practice
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) was a full practice participant Thursday.
ANALYSIS
This is the rookie's first full practice since he suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 15. He did return for the AFC Championship Game, but the Bills limited him to seven yards (and a TD) on seven touches and 49 percent snap share. It's possible Edwards-Helaire takes on a larger share of backfield work in the Super Bowl, at which point he'll be another two weeks removed from the initial injury.
Jan 27, 2021
Starts week with LP designation
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) is listed as a limited participant on Wednesday's injury report.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire returned from a month-long absence for the AFC Championship Game, taking six carries for seven yards and a touchdown while playing 49 percent of offensive snaps in a 38-24 win over Buffalo. He should be ready for the Super Bowl, where he'll likely continue to split backfield work with Darrel Williams. The Chiefs also hope to have Le'Veon Bell (knee) available again, though his role isn't likely to be significant.
Jan 24, 2021
Gets first career playoff TD
Edwards-Helaire registered seven yards and one touchdown on six carries while catching one of two targets for zero yards during Sunday's 38-24 win against Buffalo in the AFC Championship Game.
ANALYSIS
The first-round rookie back hadn't appeared in a game since Week 15, having been beleaguered by a left ankle sprain and a left hip strain suffered during the Chiefs' win over New Orleans. Edwards-Helaire was active as a limited participant throughout the practice week, however, and he ultimately showed enough to the training staff to earn his first career playoff nod. While Le'Veon Bell (knee) was deemed inactive for Sunday's playoff tilt, Darrel Williams paced the backfield in carries (13) and rushing yards (52) while registering Kansas City's only other rushing score of the evening. Edwards-Helaire may factor in with more of a role in the Super Bowl, as he'll be afforded two weeks to further recuperate before a Feb. 7 matchup against the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay, the first team in league history to host a Super Bowl at its home stadium, boasts the NFL's most prohibitive rush defense.
Jan 24, 2021
Suits up Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) is listed as active for Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Bills, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Fellow running back Le'Veon Bell (knee) is inactive, so the availability of Edwards-Helaire -- who hasn't played since Week 15 -- is a welcome one for Kansas City. However, with Darrel Williams also on hand and having run well in last weekend's divisional-round win over the Browns, it remains to be how much action Edwards-Helaire will be in line to see Sunday. How his ankle responded during warmups, as well as game flow figure to be key factors in how that plays out against Buffalo.
Jan 24, 2021
Expected to suit up Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) is expected to be available for Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Bills, ESPN.com's Adam Schefter reports.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, fellow running back Le'Veon Bell (knee) is not expected to play in the contest. If Edwards-Helaire -- who hasn't played since Week 15 -- indeed suits up for Sunday's 6:40 ET kickoff, how much action he'd be in line to see is uncertain, with the report noting that "will depend on how he feels pregame and, if active, in the game." If Edwards-Helaire ends up limited or out versus Buffalo, Darrel Williams would continue to see an expanded role in Kansas City's rushing game.
Jan 22, 2021
Listed as questionable
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Buffalo.
ANALYSIS
Le'Veon Bell (knee) also is listed as questionable, after missing practice Thursday and Friday. Edwards-Helaire was a limited participant each day this week, making his bid to play in a game for the first time since Week 15. With both Edwards-Helaire and Bell looking truly questionable, Darrel Williams could maintain a key role in the KC backfield, after he took 17 touches for 94 yards in the wild-card win over Cleveland. Bell got only three carries last week, so he could fall out of the picture even if he's healthy enough to play.
Jan 21, 2021
Another limited practice
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) remained limited at practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, Le'Veon Bell (knee) didn't practice Thursday, which sets the stage for Friday's session to be pivotal with regard to the official status -- heading into Championship Weekend -- of two key members of the Kansas City's backfield. At present, Darrel Williams is the team's top healthy running back option. Edwards-Helaire -- who led the Chiefs with 803 rushing yards in 13 regular-season outings -- last saw game action in Week 15.
Jan 20, 2021
Limited in practice to start week
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was also a limited participant last Wednesday, before downgrading to DNP on Thursday and Friday. He'll likely follow a different routine this week, as ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested the rookie running back was gearing up to play for the first time since Week 15. Coach Andy Reid mentioned Thursday's practice as being especially important to evaluate injured players.
Jan 20, 2021
Returns to practice
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) returned to practice Wednesday, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll likely be listed as a limited participant, his first involvement of any kind since last Wednesday. The rookie running back hasn't played in a game since suffering a high-ankle sprain Week 15, but a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter this past weekend suggested Edwards-Helaire was on track to return for the AFC Championship Game if the Chiefs beat Cleveland in the divisional round. Speaking to the media Wednesday afternoon, coach Andy Reid said Thursday's practice will be the most important one for the Chiefs to evaluate their injured players before the AFC Championship Game on Sunday.
Jan 17, 2021
Sitting out Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's divisional-round game against the Browns, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
As reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN earlier Sunday, Edwards-Helaire isn't ready to return from the left ankle sprain and left hip strain that he suffered Week 15. With the rookie first-rounder out of the lineup, Le'Veon Bell is in line to head the Chiefs backfield in their playoff opener. Behind Bell, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson are next up for touches at running back.
Jan 17, 2021
Unlikely to play Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) isn't expected to play Sunday against the Browns, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire sat out the final two games of the regular season due to a sprained left ankle and a strained left hip, and even with a bye week the rookie first-rounder isn't slated to suit up in the Chiefs' playoff opener. With Edwards-Helaire likely on the sideline Sunday, Kansas City will turn to Le'Veon Bell to lead the backfield, with Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson in reserve.
Jan 17, 2021
Faces 'uphill battle' to play Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) remains questionable for Sunday's divisional-round game against the Browns, but sources tell Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that the running back is facing "an uphill battle to play."
ANALYSIS
After missing the Chiefs' final two regular-season contests while battling a left ankle sprain and a left hip strain, Edwards-Helaire was generally expected to be ready to go for the divisional round following Kansas City's bye in the wild-card round. Though Edwards-Helaire started the week off on a positive note by practicing on a limited basis, he logged no activity Thursday and Friday to take a questionable tag into Sunday. Unless Edwards-Helaire demonstrates some dramatic improvement in pregame warmups, he looks like he could be listed among the Chiefs' inactive players for the contest. If that's the case, the Chiefs would be down to Le'Veon Bell, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson as their available backs.
Jan 15, 2021
Officially listed as questionable
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) did not practice Friday and is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's AFC divisional-round game against the Browns, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire has now missed back-to-back practices since logging a limited session Wednesday, but Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports that the starting running back's lack of recent activity has been intentional to provide him rest, rather than representative of a setback. Coach Andy Reid hinted that Edwards-Helaire could be a true game-time decision for Sunday's contest. Le'Veon Bell and Darrel Williams will stand to lead the Chiefs' backfield if Edwards-Helaire can't go.
Jan 14, 2021
Absent Thursday
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) didn't practice Thursday, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a step backward -- at least on paper -- after the rookie was a limited practice participant Wednesday. It's possible this was the Chiefs' plan all along, but it does throw some doubt on Edwards-Helaire's availability for a playoff game against the Browns on Sunday. He missed the final two weeks of the regular season after suffering a high-ankle sprain Dec. 20.
Jan 13, 2021
Logs limited practice
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) was limited at practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Per Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com, Edwards-Helaire -- who last played in Week 15 -- is progressing well from his high-ankle sprain and the running back's presence at practice Wednesday bodes well for his chances of suiting up for Sunday's divisional round playoff game against the Browns. Time will tell if Edwards-Helaire approaches Kansas City's playoff opener with an injury designation or is fully cleared to play in advance of the weekend.
Jan 13, 2021
Spotted at practice
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) was present for Wednesday's practice, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
With Kansas City having clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC in advance of Week 17 action, Edwards-Helaire sat out the team's regular-season finale. The running back's presence on the field Wednesday suggest that he's trending toward a return to action in Sunday's divisional playoff game against the Browns. The team's first official practice report of the week will reveal Edwards-Helaire's participation level.
Jan 1, 2021
Out for season finale
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Fellow running back Le'Veon Bell (knee) is listed as questionable for the contest, but with Kansas City having clinched a first-round playoff bye, it wouldn't surprise us to see Darwin Thompson and Darrel Williams see their share of touches Sunday, with the team likely to scratch or limit a number of its key players. Edwards-Helaire will thus set his sights on being ready to play in time for the Chiefs' postseason opener.
Dec 31, 2020
Remains sidelined Thursday
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) didn't practice Thursday, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to fellow running back Le'Veon Bell (knee). If both players end up ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chargers, which is plausible given that Kansas City (with the AFC's No. 1 seed clinched) plans to rest some key players this weekend. Next up in the team's RB pecking order are Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson, with Elijah McGuire a candidate to be elevated from the practice squad.
Dec 30, 2020
Remains absent from practice
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire appears destined to miss Sunday's regular-season finale against the Chargers due to his high-ankle sprain, especially considering that coach Andy Reid has already announced he'll sit some of his starters. With Le'Veon Bell (knee) also now injured, Darrel Williams, Darwin Thompson and Elijah McGuire are all possible candidates for increased workloads Week 17.
Dec 25, 2020
Won't play Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (ankle) won't play Sunday against the Falcons, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
This news comes via coach Andy Reid, which sets the stage for Le'Veon Bell to head the Kansas City backfield this weekend, with Darrel Williams, Darwin Thompson and possibly Elijah McGuire also in the mix. Looking ahead, Edwards-Helaire is also expected to miss the team's season finale in Week 17 versus the Chargers.
Dec 24, 2020
Sitting out another practice
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) isn't practicing Thursday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Given that Edwards-Helaire is considered unlikely to play in either of the Chiefs' next two games with a left high-ankle sprain and a strained left hip, his absence from both of the Chiefs' first two Week 16 practices hardly comes as a surprise. Expect Kansas City to formally rule the rookie out for Sunday's game against the Falcons following Friday's practice.

Misses practice, as expected
Edwards-Helaire (ankle/hip) didn't practice Wednesday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Kansas City has yet to provide a detailed update on the Week 16 status of Edwards-Helaire, ESPN's Adam Schefter previously relayed that the running back is believed to be dealing with a high ankle sprain and a strained hip. With that in mind, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggests that Edwards-Helaire is targeting a return in the playoffs. Barring an unexpected turn in his favor, look for the Chiefs to officially rule Edwards-Helaire out for Sunday's game against the Falcons no later than Friday. Either way, fantasy managers should assume that Le'Veon Bell will head the team's backfield this weekend, with Darrel Williams, Darwin Thompson (illness) and possibly Elijah McGuire also in the mix.
Dec 21, 2020
High-ankle sprain feared
The Chiefs believe that Edwards-Helaire suffered a high-ankle sprain and a strained hip during Sunday's 32-29 win over the Saints, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Chiefs listed Edwards-Helaire with hip and ankle injuries when he was forced out late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's win, and he returned negative X-ray results after the game. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has reported that the rookie first-round pick is expected to miss the final two weeks of the regular season, and given the tricky recovery timetable often associated with high-ankle sprains, even a first-round bye may not guarantee his immediate return in the postseason. Le'Veon Bell projects to lead Kansas City's backfield as long as Edwards-Helaire is sidelined, while Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson are also candidates for increased roles.
Dec 21, 2020
Could miss Weeks 16-17
Even though X-rays came back negative, the early expectation is that Edwards-Helaire (hip/leg) will miss the final two games of the regular season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was helped off the field during the fourth quarter of Sunday's 32-29 win over the Chiefs, finishing with 14 carries for 79 yards and one catch for four yards on 45 percent of offensive snaps. The team expects him to be out for at least a week or two, but the likelihood of a first-round bye improves Edwards-Helaire's odds to avoid any playoff absences. Le'Veon Bell figures to lead the KC backfield while the rookie is sidelined, with Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson also candidates to get some work.
Dec 20, 2020
Good news from X-rays
Edwards-Helaire (hip/leg) received negative X-ray results after Sunday's 32-29 win over the Saints, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Andy Reid said that Edwards-Helaire "got twisted up into the splits" in the fourth quarter of Sunday's win, but it looks like the rookie running back has at least avoided any sort of fracture. Edwards-Helaire had to be helped off the field by trainers, and he was unable to put any weight on his left leg. Le'Veon Bell, who had 15 carries for 62 yards and a score versus New Orleans, would be in line to lead Kansas City's backfield if Edwards-Helaire can't face the Falcons in Week 16.
Dec 20, 2020
Injured late Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (hip/leg) is doubtful to return to Sunday's game against the Saints.
ANALYSIS
The rookie first-round pick appeared to have his lower left leg rolled up late in the fourth quarter. He was able to limp off the field with the assistance of trainers, but didn't place any weight on his injured leg. Le'Veon Bell stands to take over as the Chiefs' primary ball carrier as long as Edwards-Helaire is sidelined. Before leaving the field, Edwards-Helaire had 14 carries for 79 yards and secured one of four targets for four yards.
Dec 13, 2020
Gets 21 touches in return
Edwards-Helaire rushed 16 times for 32 yards and caught five of six targets for another 59 in Sunday's 33-27 win over Miami.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was bottled up on the ground but got 16 of the 18 carries by Chiefs running backs, returning to a lead role after sitting out last week's win over Denver due to a stomach illness. His inability to find running room in this one doesn't bode well for Edwards-Helaire's chances of finding success on the ground against the stout Saints front in Week 15, but the versatile rookie notched his eighth game with at least three catches in this one and should remain heavily involved in the high-powered Kansas City offense as both a runner and a pass-catcher.
Dec 9, 2020
Practices in full
Edwards-Helaire was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was still technically listed with an illness on Wednesday's injury report, but the issue didn't impact his reps at all. The rookie running back was active for last Sunday's win over the Broncos, but only in an emergency capacity, leading to his ending the day without a single snap. He appears on track to resume handling his usual duties on the road in Miami, but coach Andy Reid did mention that Edwards-Helaire's stomach ailment caused him to lose weight, so fantasy managers will want to keep a close eye on his status.
Dec 7, 2020
Active, but no snaps Week 13
Edwards-Helaire (illness) was active during Sunday night's 22-16 win over the Broncos but did not register a single snap.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire missed practice Thursday and Friday due to a stomach flu, and Matt Derrick of Sports Radio 810 WHB reports that the illness even caused him to lose some weight. It was only after the game, and Edwards-Helaire's surprise goose egg in a key fantasy week, that coach Andy Reid revealed his intent to hold the rookie running back out except as an emergency option. Hopefully Edwards-Helaire will be all clear of his ailment in time for the Chiefs' Week 14 matchup against the Dolphins, but if there are any lingering concerns about his health the team could simply lean on Le'Veon Bell again.
Dec 6, 2020
Limited to decoy duties
Edwards-Helaire (illness) has not played a snap in Sunday's game against the Broncos, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that he has spent the entire game standing on the sidelines.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire wasn't able to practice Thursday or Friday due to the flu, and it appears he's only active as insurance in case of injuries to the team's other running backs. Le'Veon Bell has been bottled up by the Broncos in Edwards-Helaire's absence. The rookie first-rounder's practice participation in the coming week should help determine his status for the Chiefs' Week 14 trip to Miami.
Dec 6, 2020
Active Sunday
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is listed as active for Sunday night's game against the Broncos, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire missed practice both Thursday and Friday because of a stomach virus, but he's improved to the point that he'll give it a go Sunday. Though he continues to head Kansas City's backfield, the team's high-octane passing attack -- as well as the presence of fellow RB Le'Veon Bell -- haven't resulted in reliable rushing volume for Edwards-Helaire of late.
Dec 6, 2020
May be game-time call
Edwards-Helaire (illness), who is listed as questionable, is expected to play Sunday against the Broncos, but the team still needs to see how he's feeling pregame, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie first-round pick hasn't practiced since Wednesday due to a stomach virus, but he's apparently recovering well, and coach Andy Reid appeared optimistic Friday of his chances to play. Edwards-Helaire's status should receive additional clarity as Sunday's 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff draws closer.
Dec 4, 2020
Listed as questionable for SNF
Edwards-Helaire (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday night's game against the Broncos, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Edwards-Helaire missed practice both Thursday and Friday due to a stomach virus, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star relays that coach Andy Reid sounds hopeful about the running back's Week 13 status. "We think we're going to get him back here," Reid noted Friday. "I mean, I don't think that's a problem. He's feeling better today, but we held him out." Look for added clarity regarding Edwards-Helaire's availability to arrive no later than Sunday morning, after the likes of ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport post their late night/early morning injury updates.
Dec 4, 2020
Misses practice again
Edwards-Helaire, who is dealing with a stomach virus, didn't practice Friday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It looks likely that Edwards-Helaire will be listed as questionable for Sunday's night's game against the Broncos, but coach Andy Reid noted of the running back Friday that "we think we're going to get him back'' for the contest.
Dec 4, 2020
Not spotted at practice Friday
Edwards-Helaire (illness) wasn't spotted at practice Friday, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The running back didn't practice Thursday, so his Friday injury report designation will be notable. If Edwards-Helaire's illness results in him being limited at all or out Sunday against the Broncos, Le'Veon Bell would be in line for an expanded role in Week 13.
Dec 3, 2020
Misses practice Thursday
Edwards-Helaire (illness) didn't practice Thursday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire practiced fully Wednesday, so his status is worth monitoring as Sunday's game against the Broncos approaches. If he's limited at all or out this weekend, Le'Veon Bell would be next up for the Chiefs' Week 13 carries.
Nov 29, 2020
Contained in close win
Edwards-Helaire rushed 11 times for 37 yards and brought in his only target for two yards in the Chiefs' 27-24 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The rookie had the unenviable task of facing a Buccaneers defense that was allowing a minuscule 2.9 yards per carry to running backs coming in, and all things considered, he did a serviceable job with the opportunities he was given. Edwards-Helaire's elusiveness and vision came in handy on a couple of runs in particular, but running plays just seemed like an occasional formality for Kansas City on a day when Patrick Mahomes rather easily racked up 462 passing yards. Edwards-Helaire will look for more overall opportunities in a Week 13 Sunday night divisional battle against the Broncos. which gave up a total of 229 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns to the Saints in Week 12.
Nov 23, 2020
Leads backfield with two scores
Edwards-Helaire (illness) rushed 14 times for 69 yards and two touchdowns while securing one of two targets for eight yards in Sunday's 35-31 win over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was forced to miss a practice with an undisclosed illness (albeit not one that would land him on the COVID-19/reserve list), but was cleared well before Sunday's kickoff. His fantasy owners were also feeling sick recently after seeing the breakout star's carries dip to single digits over the past three contests following the addition of Le'Veon Bell. CEH returned to his early-season form with 15 touches and two trips to the end zone. Bell remained a noticeable part of the rotation (eight touches and a score of his own), but this touch distribution likely better reflects how the playing time will shake up in a competitive contest, as two of the three previous games were of the blowout variety, and the third (a comeback win over Carolina) appeared to be lopsided early on. Sunday's game script better represented a traditional Andy Reid scheme, which can only be viewed as positive for those losing faith in the rookie sensation. Bell may still eat into Edward-Helaire's production, but it appears th
Nov 20, 2020
Good to go this week
Edwards-Helaire (illness) doesn't carry an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Raiders after returning to a full practice Friday.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to fellow running back Darrel Williams (illness), so the duo will be available Sunday, along with Le'Veon Bell and Darwin Thompson. Over his last three games, Edwards-Helaire has combined for just 19 carries for 81 yards and a TD and caught seven passes for 47 yards and another score in that span. Edwards-Helaire's recent reduction in volume coincides with the introduction of Bell to Kansas City's offense, and with a time-share now in effect, the rookie's weekly fantasy upside has taken a hit.
Nov 20, 2020
Returns to the field Friday
Edwards-Helaire (illness) returned to practice Friday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As did Darrel Williams (illness), with Friday's final injury report slated to reveal whether the running backs will carry any sort of Week 11 injury designation into Sunday's game against the Raiders.
Nov 19, 2020
Misses Thursday's practice
Edwards-Helaire missed practice Thursday due to an illness, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to fellow running back Darrel Williams and as a result, Le'Veon Bell and Darwin Thompson were the only Kansas City running backs to practice Thursday. We'll look for added clarity regarding Edwards-Helaire's status for Sunday's game against the Raiders no later than Friday, upon the release of the team's final Week 11 injury report.
Nov 8, 2020
Notches receiving TD in win
Edwards-Helaire rushed five times for 14 yards and secured three of five targets for 20 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs' 33-31 win over the Panthers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
With Kansas City surprisingly falling behind by a 14-3 score in the first half, game script quickly turned away from the run. Consequently, Edwards-Helaire and backfield mate Le'Veon Bell combined for just nine carries, but the former managed to salvage his fantasy day with a four-yard touchdown grab in the latter portion of the third quarter, the first of his career. Edwards-Helaire now concerningly has single-digit carries in three consecutive games, however, which will continue to add a healthy dose of weekly uncertainty to his fantasy prospects if it endures. The rookie will look to up his overall number of touches in a Week 11 battle versus the Raiders after a Week 10 bye.
Nov 1, 2020
Minor role in blowout win
Edwards-Helaire rushed six times for 21 yards and caught all three of his targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 35-9 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Neither Edwards-Helaire nor Le'Veon Bell (six carries for seven yards) got anything going on the ground, as the Jets' defensive line was just about the only unit on either side of the ball to play well for the visitors. The rookie has set new career lows for carries in back-to-back weeks since Bell signed with Kansas City, but Edwards-Helaire's lack of volume can be better attributed to the Chiefs' reluctance to give him a major workload while nursing large leads rather than a shift away from him as the team's top option on the ground. Expect Edwards-Helaire to get back on track in Week 9 against a Panthers defense that has struggled to defend running backs.
Oct 25, 2020
Scores for first time since Week 1
Edwards-Helaire registered 46 rushing yards and a touchdown on eight carries, adding a 17-yard catch during Sunday's 43-16 win against Denver.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire snapped his scoring drought against his divisional rival, reaching the end zone for the first time since Week 1. The rookie only garnered eight of 17 RB carries against Denver on the afternoon, but the fact that Kansas City established a dominant third-quarter lead allowed for newcomer Le'Veon Bell and backup DeAndre Washington to gain more involvement. Edwards-Helaire entered Week 7 having commanded double-digit carries in every game this season, while receiving an average of 17.8 attempts per contest. Whether Bell's arrival curtails that number slightly in a more balanced game script is yet to be seen, but Edwards-Helaire remains the starting RB heading into a Week 8 matchup against the Jets.
Oct 19, 2020
New high in rushing yards
Edwards-Helaire rushed 26 times for 161 yards and caught all four of his targets for eight yards in Monday's 26-17 win over the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire was a force on the ground, gashing a usually stout Buffalo defense for a new career-best rushing total. The rookie also caught everything thrown his way, but amid pouring rain for the duration of Monday's game, his running ability is what fueled Kansas City's bounce-back victory. After not topping 65 yards since his NFL debut, Edwards-Helaire made a strong statement to remain the Chiefs' lead tailback even after the team's recent signing of Le'Veon Bell. Of course, Bell was unable to suit up Monday while still completing the required five days of COVID-19 testing, but as long as he clears that protocol, Bell could be in the fold for Sunday's game versus the Broncos, in which case the distribution of snaps and touches between he and Edwards-Helaire would be rather worthwhile to monitor.
Oct 15, 2020
Competition for reps imminent
Edwards-Helaire is expected to have competition for RB reps in the near future following the Chiefs' reported signing of Le'Veon Bell, per Adam Teicher of ESPN.com.
ANALYSIS
According to Dan Graziano of ESPN.com, Bell must complete five days of COVID-19 testing before he'll be eligible to play for Kansas City, so Edwards-Helaire no doubt will retain his status as the starting running back Monday in Buffalo. Beyond that point, Bell will be a legit contender for work out of the backfield. Edwards-Helaire kicked off his career with 138 rushing yards and one touchdown Week 1 against the Texans. In four games since then, though, he's been more of a dual threat, not surpassing 65 yards on the ground in any contest but still putting up at least 80 yards from scrimmage three times.
Oct 11, 2020
Quiet due to game script
Edwards-Helaire rushed 10 times for 40 yards and brought in three of eight targets for 40 yards in the Chiefs' 40-32 loss to the Raiders on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The rookie looked like he was on his way to a big day against a vulnerable Raiders defense when he rattled off 17 yards on his first two carries of the day. However, he totaled just 23 yards on his eight other rushes, and game script ultimately forced the Chiefs into an even more pass-heavy mode than normal late in the contest. Edwards-Heiaire will look bounce back from his second-lowest rushing output of the season at the expense of the Bills in a Week 6 Monday evening matchup.
Oct 5, 2020
Nearly 20 touches
Edwards-Helaire rushed 16 times for 64 yards and caught all three of his targets for 27 yards in Monday night's 26-10 win over the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire again made a few splash plays while commanding nearly 20 touches. The rookie hasn't really busted free on the ground since his 138-yard debut, which was also the last time he found the end zone, but Edwards-Helaire has hauled in at least three passes in three straight outings. With great versatility in an explosive offense, Edwards-Helaire is a consistent producer who's bound to repay fantasy managers with even bigger outings down the road. He'll now turn his attention toward Week 5's matchup against the Raiders.
Oct 4, 2020
Week 4 game rescheduled for Monday
Edwards-Helaire and the Chiefs are currently slated to play the Patriots on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. ET, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
On Saturday, both the Chiefs and Patriots endured positive COVID-19 tests, causing the NFL to postpone their Week 4 matchup. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, subsequent point of care testing came back clear Sunday morning, so the game has been rescheduled for Monday evening. Edwards-Helaire now will take aim at a New England defense that has allowed 139 yards from scrimmage per game and two touchdowns to running backs through three contests.
Oct 3, 2020
Week 4 game postponed
Edwards-Helaire and the Chiefs will not play their scheduled matchup Sunday against the Patriots after players from both teams tested positive for COVID-29. The NFL hopes to reschedule the game for Monday or Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The league's initial plan appears to be to merely delay the game by a day or two, in which case it would still count as part of Week 4. That was the initial plan regarding the Steelers/Titans game, which was affected by positive COVID-19 tests within the TItans organization, but the league eventually decided to call off that game and reschedule it for a later date. Whether or not that will happen in this case as well remains to be seen.
Sep 29, 2020
Good all-purpose performance
Edwards-Helaire rushed 20 times for 64 yards and caught five of six targets for 70 yards in Monday night's 34-20 win over the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire's dynamic skill set was once again on display in another great offensive performance from the Chiefs. Although he averaged just 3.2 yards per carry, the rookie flashed his ability to make defenders miss through power and quickness, and he reached 20 carries for the second time in three games. More impressively, however, Edwards-Helaire displayed his excellent hands, setting a new high mark in receiving yards for his young career. Just three games into life as a pro, Edwards-Helaire has already established himself as a uniquely talented tailback who's perfectly suited to his role in Kansas City's scheme, keeping his stock high ahead of a clash with the Patriots in Week 4.
Sep 20, 2020
Catches six passes vs. Chargers
Edwards-Helaire carried 10 times for 38 yards and caught six of eight targets for an additional 32 yards during Sunday's 23-20 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
After starring in the season opener, Edwards-Helaire averaged a lackluster 3.8 yards per carry in this one. He was much more involved as a pass-catcher, however, and demonstrated the ability that made him such a tantalizing fantasy prospect leading up to the season. Despite a rather meager per-touch output in Week 2, the rookie still has 208 scrimmage yards and a touchdown through his first two NFL contests. Edwards-Helaire could find the sledding tough next Monday night against Baltimore, but his multi-faceted skillset should allow him to generate ample fantasy utility yet again.
Sep 11, 2020
Explodes onto NFL scene in win
Edwards-Helaire rushed 25 times for 138 yards and a touchdown and failed to bring in either of his two targets in the Chiefs' 34-20 win over the Texans on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The rookie managed the improbable feat of being the standout performer of the night on a squad with luminaries such as Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, constantly tormenting the Texans' front seven in a spectacular NFL debut. Edwards-Helaire put an exclamation point on the performance with a 27-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, but the fact he averaged 4.6 yards per rush on his other 24 carries underscores how consistently he was able to gain solid chunks of yardage. Edwards-Helaire looked like the complete package the Chiefs envisioned when they drafted him at the end of the first round in April, and the workload coach Andy Reid was willing to afford him in his first NFL game action of any kind certainly had to have pleased fantasy managers immensely. The only blemish on the LSU product's banner effort was his blanking on the receiving end, a matter he'll try to rectify in a Week 2 road matchup against the Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Aug 19, 2020
Transition to NFL going smoothly
Edwards-Helaire has avoided making mistakes during camp and has performed well during the reps he's gotten, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports. "Clyde has done a great job in the reps that he has gotten," said quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Sunday. "He's playing fast, and he has incredible vision. That's what's been the biggest thing so far."
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire won't get the benefit of preseason action to dip his toes into NFL game action, so it will likely be trial by fire come Week 1 with Damien Williams opting out for 2020. Edwards-Helaire seems to be passing tests early in camp, doing his job as a running back, a pass catcher and a pass blocker, with Taylor noting that his biggest mistake to date was not being hydrated enough to participate in full Sunday. With more complex portions of the playbook set to be installed beginning Wednesday, Edwards-Helaire has some more learning ahead before the regular season fires up, but he's positioned well to serve as the team's lead back this season.
Aug 17, 2020
Practices in full Monday
Edward-Helaire (dehydrated) was a full participant in practice Monday, Andrew Golden of The Wichita Eagle reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire's reps were impacted Sunday by some minor dehydration problems, but he appears to have used the 24 hours to get take in some fluids. The rookie is slated to handle the Chiefs' starting running back role out of the gates following Damien Williams' decision to opt out of the 2020 campaign. Given that Darrel Williams worked with the first-team offense in his stead Sunday, it appears Williams may have an early leg up in the competition for the top backup job due to his experience in the Chiefs offense.
Aug 16, 2020
Practice reps impacted Sunday
Coach Andy Reid called Edwards-Helaire "a bit dehydrated" Sunday, which caused the rookie running back to miss reps in the later stages of practice, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Edwards-Helaire likely would have been tabbed with "limited" participation if the Chiefs were required to file an injury report. Alas, it is training camp and not the regular season. In Edwards-Helaire's stead, Darrel Williams worked with the first-team offense, per Adam Teicher of ESPN.com. But Williams' experience in the system may have played a role, as DeAndre Washington, Darwin Thompson and Elijah McGuire also are around in the wake of Damien Williams' decision to opt out of the season.
Aug 14, 2020
Working with starters
Edwards-Helaire was the featured back Friday morning during the Chiefs' first practice in pads, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Damien Williams' decision to opt out of the 2020 season left little doubt about Edwards-Helaire's predominance in the Kansas City backfield. DeAndre Washington, Darrel Williams, Darwin Thompson and Elijah McGuire also hope to compete for roles, but they may just be fighting for scraps if the rookie first-round pick proves to be a quick study.
Jul 30, 2020
Poised for big workload post-Damien
With Damien Williams opting out of the 2020 season, Edwards-Helaire is expected to handle the featured backfield role in Kansas City, ESPN.com's Adam Teicher reports.
ANALYSIS
The No. 32 overall pick believes he's a perfect fit for Andy Reid's offense, noting that he hasn't had any trouble learning the playbook this summer. The lack of on-field offseason programs and preseason games could be tough on rookies around the league this year, but running backs usually face easier transitions than players at other positions. Edwards-Helaire now figures to be a first- or second-round pick in the vast majority of fantasy leagues, with DeAndre Washington, Darrel Williams, Darwin Thompson and Elijah McGuire providing less-than-stellar competition for backfield snaps. There is some chance the Chiefs add a veteran, perhaps Devonta Freeman, but there's nobody available on the open market who would be as much of a threat to Edwards-Helaire as Damien Williams would've been.
Jul 29, 2020
Fellow running back opts out
With fellow running back Damien Williams having decided to opt out of the 2020 NFL season, Edwards-Helaire appears on track to see added touches in Kansas City's backfield, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
DeAndre Washington, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson are also in the mix, but with the capable Damien Williams unavailable this coming season, Edwards-Helaire -- whom the team selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, 32nd overall -- is the current favorite to head the team's rushing attack. That said, there's a chance that the Chiefs might elect to add further depth and sign a veteran free agent such as Devonta Freeman.
May 1, 2020
Likely sharing work with Williams
Chiefs GM Brett Veach expects Damien Williams to "come in as the starting running back", while Edwards-Helaire will compete for playing time to form a one-two punch in the backfield, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams figures to take the first snap with the starting offense whenever the Chiefs are able to practice, but that doesn't necessarily mean the rookie won't have a shot at the lead role early on. Veach referred to Edwards-Helaire as a "franchise running back, true playmaker, someone special and unique", and the Chiefs presumably expect some form of immediate return on their first-round draft pick. The competition for snaps and touches between Edwards-Helaire and Williams will be one of the key storylines to monitor for fantasy football in 2020.
