Placed back on practice squad
Pettis reverted to New Orleans' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was elevated for the first time this season ahead of Sunday's win over Carolina. He played six snaps on special teams, returning one kick for 31 yards and two punts for eight yards. Pettis took over return duties for Rashid Shaheed, who was traded to Seattle early in the week.

Elevated from practice squad
The Saints elevated Pettis to their active roster from their practice squad Saturday ahead of Sunday's game versus the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Pettis is set to make his season debut after signing with New Orleans' practice squad early last month. The 30-year-old is expected to serve as the team's punt returner in Sunday's matchup, replacing Rashid Shaheed, who was traded to the Seahawks earlier in the week.
Oct 2, 2025
Back with New Orleans on PS
The Saints signed Pettis to the practice squad Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis signed a one-year deal with the Saints in March but was unable to make the team's practice squad at the end of training camp. He was without a team for just over a month, but he has opted to return to New Orleans as a member of the team's practice squad. Pettis would be a candidate to be elevated to the active roster for the Saints' Week 5 clash against the Giants on Sunday if fellow wide receiver Trey Palmer (ankle) is unable to play.
Aug 26, 2025
Released by New Orleans
The Saints released Pettis on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis re-signed with New Orleans back in March after posting a 12-120-1 receiving line on 28 targets across eight regular-season games last season, but he was unable to make the initial 53-man roster behind Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed and newcomer Devaughn Vele this summer.
Mar 9, 2025
Returning to NOLA for 2025
The Saints signed Pettis to a one-year contract Sunday, Ari Merov of The 33rd Team reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis signed with the Saints' practice squad in October after being let go by the Bears with an injury settlement in early September. He was elevated from the practice squad three times before being signed to the active roster in December and saw an increased role the Saints' offense over the last four games of the regular season, during which he logged nine catches (on 22 targets) for 98 yards and one touchdown. Now under contract for one more year, Pettis will look to earn an even bigger role for himself for the 2025 campaign under new head coach Kellen Moore.
Jan 5, 2025
Catches TD to cap off season
Pettis had two receptions (on six targets) for 16 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 27-19 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Pettis caught his first touchdown of the season when he hauled in a five-yard pass in the end zone from rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler in the second quarter. The 29-year-old signed with the Saints on Dec. 7 after the team underwent a rash of injuries at wide receiver. With starters Chris Olave (concussion) and Rashid Shaheed (knee) both on IR down the stretch of the season, Pettis helped augment the receiver room behind Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who led the team with 16 catches (on 34 targets) for 380 yards and four touchdowns over the final eight weeks. Meanwhile, Pettis totaled 12 catches (on 28 targets) for 120 yards and one touchdown over this stretch. Pettis will likely look to sign a reserve/future contract with the Saints heading into this offseason.
Dec 23, 2024
Nets 101 all-purpose yards in loss
Pettis secured two of seven targets for 31 yards and returned two kickoffs for 70 yards in the Saints' 34-0 loss to the Packers on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Pettis finished second in receiving yards and targets on the night for the Saints while also tying Foster Moreau and Juwan Johnson for the team lead in catches. The veteran wideout continued to enjoy an expanded role in the offense due to New Orleans' multitude of injuries at wideout, and his receiving yardage total was a new season high. However, despite the elevated level of opportunity Monday, Pettis could bump down all the way to a No. 4 or No. 5 role for a Week 17 home matchup against the Raiders if Marquez Valdes-Scantling (chest/illness) and Chris Olave (concussion) are able to return for that contest.
Dec 15, 2024
Catches two passes Week 15
Pettis tallied two receptions (on five targets) for 24 yards during Sunday's 20-19 defeat against Washington.
ANALYSIS
Pettis logged more than two targets for the first time this season. He also tied with running back Alvin Kamara (groin) for the team's second-most targets behind deep threat Marquez Valdes-Scantling (seven). Though, this ultimately didn't mean much in terms of fantasy value, as the Saints' passing game was largely ineffective without starting quarterback Derek Carr (concussion/hand). With no clear No. 1 receiver either, it's likely that the Saints will continue spreading the ball around to multiple pass catchers. However, if Kamara ends up missing time after being forced out with a groin injury in the fourth quarter, then it's possible that the Saints will rely more on its wideouts and tight ends. The team will have one extra day to rest before facing the Packers on Monday, Dec. 23.
Dec 11, 2024
Held without catch in Week 14
Pettis took the field for 21 of the Saints' 68 snaps on offense and was unable to reel in either of his two targets in Sunday's 14-11 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was held without a catch for the first time in four appearances with the Saints and finished fourth in snaps among New Orleans receivers, trailing Marquez Valdes-Scantling (48), Kevin Austin (44) and Cedrick Wilson (25). The 29-year-old is unlikely to see his role grow dramatically over the final four games of the season, though he'll at least have some security after the Saints gave him a permanent spot on the roster by signing him off the practice squad last week.
Dec 7, 2024
Signed to active roster by NOLA
The Saints Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana Pettis from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis had been elevated from the Saints' practice squad for the last three games, and now he's set to be on the active roster for the rest of the 2024 regular season. Across his three outings, Pettis logged three catches (on four targets) for 22 yards while adding 26 kick return yards and 54 punt return yards.
Dec 2, 2024
Moves back to practice squad
Pettis reverted to the Saints' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Pettis has received some run in New Orleans' offense the last three games due to the banged-up nature of the receiving corps, recording exactly one catch on each occasion. Overall, his 3-22-0 line on four targets during that span isn't much to write home about, and his snap share (20 percent) Sunday against the Rams was behind all of Marquez Valdes-Scantling (76), Kevin Austin (61) and Cedrick Wilson (33). Because the Saints have used the maximum allotment of three elevations on Pettis, he'll need to be signed to the active roster in order to suit up this coming Sunday at the Giants.
Nov 30, 2024
Elevated by Saints for Week 13
New Orleans elevated Pettis from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis will be elevated for a third straight game. In his last two outings, Pettis has caught two passes on as many targets for 17 yards while adding 26 kick return yards and 54 punt return yards. He'll serve as the Saints' primary returner Sunday against the Rams and will provide depth at wide receiver behind Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Cedrick Wilson and fellow practice squad wideout Kevin Austin.
Nov 18, 2024
Reverts to practice squad
Pettis reverted to the Saints' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was elevated to the Saints' active roster for the second consecutive week ahead of Sunday's win over the Browns, catching his lone target for nine yards across seven offensive snaps. The Washington product also played five special-teams snaps and returned two punts for 54 yards, including a 53-yard return that was initially ruled an 88-yard touchdown before being called back for stepping out of bounds. He's expected to rejoin the Saints' active roster following the team's Week 12 bye.
Nov 16, 2024
Elevated by Saints for Week 11
The Saints elevated Pettis from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis will be elevated to the Saints' active roster for a second straight week. He played 11 snaps (seven on offense, four on special teams) in Week 10 against the Falcons, finishing with one catch for eight yards while adding 26 kickoff return yards. Pettis will likely reprise his role as the Saints' primary kickoff returner against the Browns on Sunday.
Nov 11, 2024
Back to practice squad
Pettis reverted to the Saints' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
ANALYSIS
The wide receiver was elevated for Sunday's 20-17 win over the Falcons with Chris Olave (concussion) on injured reserve and Cedrick Wilson (shoulder) out. Pettis played on seven offensive snaps and caught his only target for eight yards. He also played four snaps on special teams and returned a kick for 26 yards.
Nov 9, 2024
Elevated from practice squad
New Orleans elevated Pettis from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis signed with the Saints' practice squad Oct. 15 after being let go with an injury settlement by the Bears on Sept. 5. He'll provide the Saints some depth at wide receiver against the Falcons on Sunday as Chris Olave (concussion) is on injured reserve and Cedrick Wilson (shoulder) has been ruled out. Pettis played in all 17 regular-season games with Chicago in 2023 and finished with 19 catches (on 41 targets) for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
Oct 15, 2024
Joins Saints' practice squad
New Orleans signed Pettis (undisclosed) to its practice squad Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was cut from the Bears' injured reserve list in early September, but with the Saints dealing with multiple injuries to an already-thin group of wide receivers, it now looks like he could suit up for his 2024 debut as soon as Thursday. Specifically, his experience returning punts could prove helpful with Rashid Shaheed's (knee) status for Week 7 up in the air.
Oct 8, 2024
Works out with Cowboys
The Cowboys hosted Pettis (undisclosed) for a workout Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was let go with an injury settlement by the Bears on Sept. 5 due to an undisclosed issue. He appears to be healthy from whatever was ailing him, and the 28-year-old wideout is attempting to catch on with an NFL roster. He last saw regular-season action in 2022 with the Bears, during which he registered 19 catches (on 41 targets) for 245 yards and three touchdowns across 17 games.
Sep 5, 2024
Let go with injury settlement
The Bears released Pettis (undisclosed) from injured reserve Thursday with an injury settlement, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
The injury settlement allows Pettis to sign with another team once he is recovered from whatever is ailing him. The 2018 second-round pick missed all of last season due to a back injury he sustained during training camp. Pettis appeared in all 17 regular-season games for the Bears in 2022, and he finished with 19 catches (on 41 targets) for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
Aug 28, 2024
Placed on IR
The Bears placed Pettis (undisclosed) on injured reserve Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
With no designation to return, the only way Pettis can play this season is if he reaches an injury settlement to be released by the Bears. He scored a pair of TDs during the preseason but isn't likely to be more than a fifth/sixth WR (and maybe a return specialist) even if he gets healthy at some point soon.
Aug 17, 2024
Catches two TDs
Pettis caught each of his three targets for 53 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-3 preseason win over the Bengals on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
A 2018 second-round pick, Pettis was the Bears' No. 3 receiver as recently as 2022 but didn't play in 2023 after suffering a back injury last August. He's now battling for one of the final roster spots, having caught each of his three passes Saturday in the third quarter after starting QB Caleb Williams was pulled from the game.
Aug 6, 2024
Likely battling for rotational work
After missing the 2023 season with a back injury, Pettis is likely battling for a depth role in the Chicago offense.
ANALYSIS
In 2022 with the Bears, Pettis posted 245 yards and three touchdowns, which represented his best season since 2018. Unlike previous Bears' teams, Chicago now has a strong trio of wide receivers in DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze. As a result, Pettis will likely be battling for a roster spot against Tyler Scott, Velus Jones, DeAndre Carter and others.
Mar 15, 2024
Back with Chicago
The Bears signed Pettis to a one-year deal Friday, Larry Mayer of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2018 second-round pick has spent time with the 49ers, Giants and Bears throughout his five-year NFL career, and he's now agreed to terms to return to Chicago. Pettis' most recent in-game action came back in 2022 with the Bears, appearing in 17 games and catching 19 of his 41 targets for 245 yards and three touchdowns. The 28-year-old wideout also returned 18 punts for 163 yards in 2022, and he'll likely be competing to make Chicago's 53-man roster as a return-man this offseason.
Sep 6, 2023
Released from injured reserve
The Bears released Pettis (undisclosed) from injured reserve with a settlement Wednesday, Aaron Wilson KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was slated to miss the entire 2023 season but is now eligible to sign and play elsewhere. The 2018 second-round pick will look for another opportunity after catching 19 of 41 targets for 245 yards and three touchdowns in 17 games for Chicago.
Aug 25, 2023
Lands on IR
The Bears placed Pettis (undisclosed) on injured reserve Friday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bears have not provided any clarity on the nature of Pettis' injury. The 27-year-old pass catcher is now in line to spend the remainder of the 2023 season on the sideline. He recorded 19 receptions on 41 targets for 245 yards and three touchdowns for Chicago in 2022.
Aug 9, 2023
Ready to return
Pettis (undisclosed) has been activated from the active/non-football injury list Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was able to pass a physical and get cleared to compete after being sidelined since the start of training camp. The 27-year-old should be in the mix to earn a depth role in the team's receiving corps; however, with the addition of DJ Moore and Tyler Scott during the offseason, Pettis may find it more difficult to make the Bears' roster this season.
Jul 25, 2023
Placed on NFI List
The Bears placed Pettis on the NFI list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis will start training camp on the NFI list with an undisclosed injury. The 2018 second-round pick played in all 17 games for the Bears last season catching 19 of 41 targets for 245 yards and three touchdowns, but could find himself competing for a roster spot once healthy due to the additions of DJ Moore and Tyler Scott.
Jun 22, 2023
Expected to battle for roster spot
Pettis may battle for a roster spot with Equanimeous St. Brown and Velus Jones, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis recorded 245 yards and three touchdowns and also worked as a punt returner in his first year with the Bears. Since he's not the physical blocker that St. Brown is, it may be difficult for Pettis to surpass him on the depth chart. It seems likely he'll be in a direct battle with Jones. Of the two, Pettis has more experience, but Jones could show improvement in his second year and has a rare size-speed combination. This camp battle could last until the latter days of August.
Apr 17, 2023
Back with Bears on one-year deal
Chicago re-signed Pettis to a one-year contract Monday, Larry Mayer of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis logged seven starts while appearing in all 17 of the Bears' games last season, recording a 19-245-3 receiving line while also turning two carries into 37 yards and contributing as a punt returner. The arrival of new top wideout DJ Moore could mean Pettis will receive less opportunities to connect with Justin Fields in the 2023 campaign, but he still projects to play a key depth role.
Jan 8, 2023
Ticketed for free agency
Pettis caught two passes for 19 yards in the Bears' 29-13 loss to the Vikings in Week 18, and ended the season with 19 receptions, 245 yards and three touchdowns over 17 games played.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was available for more than 12 games for the first time in his five-year career, but he was a depth receiver, which led to him seeing slightly more than two targets per game. Although he had a pair of games with at least 51 yards and a touchdown, he was held to fewer than 15 yards in most of his games. After staying healthy and reasonably reliable, he should continue to serve as a depth option next year and beyond. He's now an unrestricted free agent.
Jan 4, 2023
Back at practice Wednesday
Pettis (head) was a full participant at practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis briefly checked into a hospital following Sunday's loss to the Lions with blurred vision, but he was able to fly back to Chicago later that night and appears to have avoided a significant issue. Barring a setback, Pettis should be full go heading into Chicago's season finale.
Jan 2, 2023
Brief stay at hospital
Pettis returned to Chicago on a separate flight Sunday night after briefly checking into a hospital with blurred vision, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis failed to catch his lone target during Sunday's loss to the Lions and played a season-low 14 snaps. He was taken to a hospital following the game, but he cleared concussion protocol and was able to fly home Sunday night. However, it's unclear if the fifth-year wideout will be able to practice during Week 18 prep.
Jan 1, 2023
Targeted once in defeat
Pettis failed to catch his lone target in the Bears' 41-10 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis has surpassed 20 yards once since Week 1, though he has scored four touchdowns this season. He'll be considered a touchdown-dependent dart throw for fantasy in Week 18 against Minnesota.
Jan 1, 2023
Avoids concussion
Pettis entered the leagues concussion protocols and was sent to the hospital for precautionary reasons, after he was dealing with blurred vision, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was able to clear the leagues concussion protocols, despite him dealing with blurred vision. He was held without a catch and received one target in the team's 41-10 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
Jan 1, 2023
Will play Sunday
Pettis (ankle) is active Sunday against the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Pettis injured his ankle in practice Wednesday, but after he was able to log a limited practice Friday, he's good to go Week 17 against Detroit. His ability to suit up should bolster the Bears' depth at receiver.
Dec 30, 2022
Uncertain for Sunday
Pettis (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Pettis hurt his ankle Wednesday, was held out Thursday and then returned to practice Friday as a limited participant. He and Chase Claypool (knee) both are uncertain ahead of the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff this Sunday, while fellow Bears wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown has been cleared from concussion protocol.
Dec 29, 2022
Doesn't practice Thursday
Pettis (ankle) didn't practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
According to Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune, Pettis hurt his ankle at Wednesday's session, which was the reason he went down as limited. Pettis has just one more chance to mix into drills this week, but on a positive note fellow injured wide receivers Chase Claypool (knee) and Equanimeous St. Brown (concussion) both returned Thursday as limited participants, so the Bears appear to be inching toward better health at the position.
Dec 28, 2022
Week 17 status in question
Pettis (ankle) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
After catching his first touchdown pass since Oct. 13 this past weekend against Buffalo, Pettis has since opened Week 17 prep as a limited participant Wednesday due to an ankle issue, ultimately leaving his New Year's Day availability in jeopardy. The 27-year-old will have two more practices to ramp back up to full speed before he's forced to carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against Detroit.
Dec 24, 2022
Scores touchdown in losing effort
Pettis caught two passes for 11 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' 35-13 loss to the Bills on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis hasn't recorded 20 yards in any of his last nine games, and his lack of production will make him difficult to trust in Week 17 lineups.
Dec 18, 2022
Targeted four times in defeat
Pettis recorded a 13-yard reception in the Bears' 25-20 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Aside from a 84-yard performance in Week 6, Pettis has failed to reach 20 yards in every game since Week 1. His current role in the offense makes him an unreliable fantasy option.
Dec 4, 2022
Targeted twice in defeat
Pettis caught one pass for 14 yards in the Bears' 28-19 loss to the Packers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis has caught one or fewer pass in all but two games this season, and unless his role changes, he won't be a reliable fantasy option.
Dec 2, 2022
No injury designation
Pettis (illness) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was unable to practice Wednesday or Thursday due to an illness, but he practiced in a full capacity Friday and is good to go for Week 13. Over the last four games, he's secured three of four targets for 33 yards while rushing once for eight yards.
Dec 1, 2022
Still sitting out practice
Pettis (illness) was a non-participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Pettis has now missed both of the Bears' first two practices and will now have one more chance Friday to potentially move past the illness and get in some on-field reps before Sunday's game against the Packers. If Pettis fails to practice Friday, he'll likely carry a designation into the weekend, if he isn't ruled out for the contest entirely.
Nov 30, 2022
Sits out practice with illness
Pettis didn't practice Wednesday due to an illness.
ANALYSIS
Pettis will have two more chances to get back on the practice field before the Bears decide whether he'll carry a designation into Sunday's game against the Packers. While working with second-string quarterback Trevor Siemian -- who sat out Wednesday's practice with an oblique injury -- in the Bears' Week 12 loss to the Jets, Pettis played 22 snaps on offense and finished with one reception for 12 yards on two targets. Pettis and the Chicago offense could get Justin Fields (shoulder) back from a one-game absence this weekend, as the Bears' starting signal-caller opened Week 13 prep as a limited participant.
Nov 27, 2022
Targeted twice in defeat
Pettis caught one pass for 12 yards in the Bears' 31-10 loss to the Jets on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis has surpassed 18 yards once over his last 11 games, and he's been targeted just four times over his last four games. Unless he sees an increase in targets, he'll continue to have a low weekly scoring floor.
Nov 13, 2022
Handles two touches in defeat
Pettis caught one pass for nine yards and rushed once for eight yards in the Bears' 31-30 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis has exactly one target in three of Chicago's last four games, and he hasn't surpassed 18 scrimmage yards in any of his last three contests. With 125 receiving yards since Week 2, his lack of upside compared to his low-scoring floor makes him hard to rely on when setting fantasy lineups.
Nov 6, 2022
Targeted once in defeat
Pettis caught one pass for 12 yards in the Bears' 35-32 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
After being targeted 13 times over Chicago's last three games, the team acquired Chase Claypool, and Pettis was barely involved in the offense against Miami. Even when Pettis was seeing targets, he had been held to fewer than three yards in five of eight games. It'll be difficult to trust him in fantasy lineups as long as he's outside the Bears' top-two receivers in a low-volume passing attack.
Oct 30, 2022
Leads team in targets
Pettis caught four passes for 18 yards In the Bears' 49-29 loss to the Cowboys on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis is averaging 22 yards per game, but he's had between zero and two yards in five of eight games. His low scoring floor makes him a risky option when setting weekly fantasy lineups.
Oct 25, 2022
Slight usage in victory
Pettis caught one pass for two yards while adding a 29-yard run in the Bears 33-14 win over the Patriots on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Coming off an 84-yard performance against Washington, Pettis was a minor part of the offense against the Patriots. He's posted two or fewer receiving yards in five of his last six games, and he won't be a reliable fantasy option unless his role in the offense becomes more consistent.
Oct 13, 2022
Makes highlight-reel catch in loss
Pettis secured four of seven targets for 84 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' 12-7 loss to the Commanders on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Pettis made the Bears' only touchdown of the night memorable with a pretty over-the-shoulder 40-yard catch midway through the third quarter. The veteran led the team in receiving yards as well while checking in second to Darnell Mooney in targets. Pettis hadn't recorded any statistics over 93 snaps and 51 routes run since scoring a 51-yard touchdown on his only catch in Week 1, so it remains to be seen if Thursday's semi-breakout effort has any carryover into a Week 7 Monday night road interconference matchup against the Patriots on Oct. 24.
Oct 9, 2022
Blanked in defeat
Pettis failed to catch either of his two targets in the Bears' 29-22 loss to the Vikings on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Aside from a TD he scored on a busted coverage in Week 1, Pettis has yet to post another reception in the four games since. Although he's been targeted multiple times in the last two games, his lack of production makes him tough to trust in fantasy lineups.
Oct 2, 2022
Posts no stats in loss
Pettis failed to catch any of his three targets in the Bears' 20-12 loss to the Giants on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Aside from a 51-yard touchdown in Week 1 on a broken play, Pettis has failed to catch another pass this season. Unless his role changes, and the Bears begin throwing the football more, Pettis is unlikely to collect many receptions.
Sep 27, 2022
Runs wind sprints in Week 3 win
Pettis went without a target in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Since turning his lone target in the Bears' Week 1 win over the 49ers into a 51-yard touchdown reception, Pettis has now gone without a look in the passing game for two straight games. His lack of involvement isn't for a lack of snaps, as he's handled 56 percent shares in both of the last two weeks as the No. 3 wideout behind Darnell Mooney and Equanimeous St. Brown. Mooney and St. Brown have combined for just eight catches themselves through three games, and until the Bears are willing to loosen the reins on quarterback Justin Fields a bit more, target volume looks like it'll be difficult to come by for any member of the Chicago passing game. Fields hasn't attempted more than 17 throws in any of his three starts on the season.
Sep 11, 2022
Scores in Chicago debut
Pettis caught his only target for a 51-yard touchdown in the Bears' 19-10 win over the 49ers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
On his touchdown, Pettis had the defense ignore him when Justin Fields started to run away from the play. Given time, Fields looked back and found his receiver open for an easy catch-and-run score. After a strong preseason, he could find himself in the mix for weekly targets while playing in a depth role.
Aug 30, 2022
Earns roster spot
Pettis secured a spot on the Bears' 53-man roster,
ANALYSIS
Although Pettis was reported to have had an inconsistent start to training camp, he played well with the first-string offense in Chicago's final preseason game by posting 37 yards and a touchdown. He'll be in the mix to earn snaps as a depth receiver with Tajae Sharpe and Equanimeous St. Brown.
Aug 28, 2022
Finds end zone
Pettis caught three passes for 37 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' 21-20 win against the Browns on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
With Byron Pringle (quadriceps) and Velus Jones (undisclosed) sitting out, Pettis played mostly with the first-string offense. On two of his receptions, including his touchdown, he worked his way across the field in the direction Justin Fields was rolling out, showing clear chemistry with his quarterback. Pettis has been battling for a roster spot during camp, and his preseason performance may give the organization plenty of reason to keep him on the regular-season roster.
Aug 14, 2022
Produces big play
Pettis caught his only target for 25 yards in Chicago's 19-14 victory over the Chiefs on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Pettis is battling for a depth role among the Bears' wide receivers, and his performance helped him have a solid start in this competition. He'll likely continue to compete for a roster spot over the final two preseason games.
Aug 9, 2022
Inconsistent start to camp
Pettis hasn't risen above the Bears' less experienced receivers the way a former second-round pick may be expected to, Gene Chamberlain of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis hasn't been getting consistent separation against defensive backs with little NFL experience during practices. He's also struggled with occasional drops. Although Pettis had a strong rookie season in 2018, when he posted 467 yards and five touchdowns, he's recorded just 172 yards and four scores in 21 games over the last three seasons. It's likely he'll remain in a battle for one of the last wide receiver spots on the roster.
May 11, 2022
Signs with Chicago
Pettis (shoulder) agreed to a contract with the Bears on Wednesday, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old appeared in three games for the Giants last year and caught 10 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown before undergoing season-ending surgery in November. A 2018 second-round pick by San Francisco, Pettis has failed to find much success since totaling 467 receiving yards and five scores during his rookie campaign.
Jan 6, 2022
Shifted back to IR
Pettis (shoulder) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday and returned to injured reserve.
ANALYSIS
The wide receiver was moved to the COVID list Jan. 1, forcing him to be away from the Giants' facilities as he worked his way through league protocols. Pettis will now be able to keep rehabbing his shoulder injury with his sights set on a return for the 2022 campaign.
Jan 1, 2022
Joins COVID list
Pettis (shoulder) shifted to the reserve/COVID-19 list from injured reserve, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis has already been ruled out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery. He'll return to IR once he clears the league's health and safety protocols.
Nov 20, 2021
Out for season
Pettis, who was placed on injured reserve Friday, will miss the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis played in just three games with the Giants this season, recording 10 receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown primarily as a depth fill in with a number of starters out due to injury. the 26-year-old has played in just 10 games since the start of last season and has yet to play a full 16 games in any season since being drafted back in 2018.
Nov 5, 2021
Heads to IR
The Giants placed Pettis (shoulder) on injured reserve Friday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis suffered a left shoulder injury during Monday's loss to the Chiefs, and he will now have to miss a minimum of three weeks while on IR. If the likes of Kadarius Toney (thumb), Kenny Golladay (knee) and/or Sterling Shepard (quadriceps) are healthy by the time Pettis is able to return, he could see his role on offense significantly reduced.
Nov 4, 2021
Not practicing again
Pettis (shoulder) didn't take part in Thursday's practice, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The Giants listed Pettis as a non-participant on their official Week 9 report for the second straight day, after he sustained a left shoulder injury in Monday's loss to the Chiefs. The lack of practice reps this week seemingly put Pettis' availability for Sunday's game against the Raiders in peril, but the Giants will see what he's able to do at Friday's session before gauging where he stands heading into the weekend. If active Sunday, Pettis could have the chance to fill a key role in the Giants' passing game. Sterling Shepard (quadriceps) appears to be trending toward sitting out Week 9, while the statuses of fellow wideouts Kenny Golladay (knee), Kadarius Toney (thumb) and John Ross (quadriceps) are up in the air.
Nov 2, 2021
Hurt on muffed punt
Pettis (shoulder) was forced out of Monday's 20-17 loss to the Chiefs, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was injured during the first half of Monday's loss while attempting to recover his own mishandled punt return. The severity of the 2018 second-round pick's injury remains undisclosed at this time. Heading into Week 8, Pettis had put together back-to-back games with five receptions.
Oct 24, 2021
Reaches end zone
Pettis recorded five receptions on five targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 25-3 loss to the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was elevated from the practice squad for the second consecutive week and has delivered five receptions on each occasion. In Sunday's victory, Pettis recorded a five-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter to put the Giants up 15-3. He also tallied a long reception of 27 yards, which helped set up a 49-yard field goal during the team's first drive of the second quarter. It's unclear what role Pettis may be able to maintain once the Giants' receiving corps gets healthier, though Pettis has made the most of current opportunity.
Oct 19, 2021
Promoted to active roster
Pettis was signed to the Giants' active roster from the practice squad Tuesday, Michael Elsen of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old was a gameday elevation from the practice squad for Sunday's loss to the Rams, but he'll now join the active roster in a longer-term capacity after C.J. Board suffered a broken arm. Pettis caught five of 11 targets for 48 yards during his season debut and could continue seeing a similar role until some of Kenny Golladay (knee), Kadarius Toney (ankle) or Darius Slayton (hamstring) are able to return.
Oct 19, 2021
Back to practice squad
Pettis reverted to the Giants' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transactions report.
ANALYSIS
Pettis reverting to the practice squad is an automatic transaction after he was elevated for Sunday's loss to the Rams. Versus Los Angeles, Pettis secured five of 11 targets for 48 yards, benefiting from increased volume due to the team's normal starting wideouts. He also recorded one tackle when a pass intended for him was intercepted.
Oct 17, 2021
Boost in volume due to absences
Pettis brought in five of 11 targets for 48 yards in the Giants' 38-11 loss to the Rams on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
With Kenny Golladay (knee) and Darius Slayton (hamstring) both inactive and Kadarius Toney (ankle) eventually joining them on the sideline Sunday, Pettis was called upon for his most extensive action since his rookie 2018 season in San Francisco. Pettis wasn't exactly efficient with his targets, but considering Daniel Jones was under duress throughout the afternoon, the receiver's totals were serviceable. Despite the solid performance, Pettis could well be back on the practice squad within days and perhaps remain there if at least a couple of the team's sidelined wideouts are available for Week 7 against the Panthers.
Oct 16, 2021
Elevated from practice squad
Pettis was elevated from the Giants' practice squad Saturday, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis is being promoted to the Giants' game day roster in order to provide roster insurance for fellow wideout Darius Slayton who is questionable for Week 6 with a hamstring injury. The Giants have been ravished by injuries to their offense, and Kenny Golladay is the latest to be ruled out after hyperextending his knee in Week 5. On a positive note, Kadarius Toney (ankle, questionable) is expected to play, and Sterling Shepard is also making his return from a hamstring injury. Even if Darius Slayton is ruled out for Sunday's game against the Rams, Pettis will likely have a hard time seeing the field behind the Giants' healthy pass catchers.
Sep 2, 2021
Let go by Giants
Pettis was waived by the Giants on Wednesday, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis finished last season on New York's active roster but was unable to retain his spot for 2021. The 2018 second-round pick could end up on the practice squad if he's unable to latch on elsewhere.
Jan 11, 2021
Scores a TD in finale
Pettis caught two passes for 43 yards and a touchdown in the Giants regular season finale.
ANALYSIS
Actually one of the catches was a trap that Mike McCarthy failed to challenge, but who's counting? In any event, the former second-round pick is still only 25 and should get another chance to carve out a role somewhere.
Dec 28, 2020
Reels in two passes in debut
Pettis caught two of three targets for 33 yards in Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Pettis finally made his Giants debut; he finished third among the team's wide receivers with 29 of the 64 offensive snaps. The 2018 second-round pick made an immediate impact on offense, and he'll look to build on that success against a soft Dallas defense in Week 17.
Dec 13, 2020
Sidelined again Sunday
Pettis will be a healthy scratch for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis will sit out for the second game in a row, as he's yet to make his Giants debut since being claimed off waivers via San Francisco. Austin Mack and C.J. Board are expected to continue to serve as the reserve receiving options for Week 14 sans Pettis.
Dec 6, 2020
Healthy scratch in Week 13
Pettis (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's Week 13 tilt against the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
The young journeyman was removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, but his Giants debut will have to wait at least another week. Austin Mack and C.J. Board will continue to serve as the top reserve wideout options behind the top trio of Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton and Golden Tate against Seattle.
Nov 30, 2020
Should return soon
Pettis (illness) is expected to "ramp up" his activity and return from the reserve/COVID-19 list this week, Tom Rock of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis is eligible to be activated from the reserve list, so his Giants debut could come this Sunday against the Seahawks. It appears he's cleared the necessary protocols, and the Giants simply want to see if his conditioning is up to par. Fantasy managers should stay away, as the 2018 second-round pick has enjoyed limited offensive success and could be catching passes from Colt McCoy once he eventually takes the field.
Nov 25, 2020
New York debut will wait
Pettis (illness) will not be available for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list due to a positive test Nov. 20, and it won't be possible for him to attain clearance in time to suit up Week 12. A 2018 second-round pick from the 49ers, Pettis still has yet to suit up for the Giants since being claimed off waivers early November.
Nov 20, 2020
Tests positive for COVID-19
Pettis (illness) will be placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list after testing positive, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis' positive test comes during the Giants' bye, but it throws some doubt on his availability for Week 12 against Cincinnati. The former 49er is still looking to make his debut with his new team.
Nov 15, 2020
Won't play against Philly
Pettis (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game versus the Eagles, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis has been with the team for nearly two weeks, but his Giants debut will be put on hold once again. According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Newark Star-Ledger, the 2018 second-round pick is expected to suit up for the Giants following the Week 11 bye. Austin Mack and C.J. Board should get more work as depth wideouts for the time being.
Nov 10, 2020
Joins active roster
Pettis was activated from the commissioner's exempt list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The Giants claimed the 25-year-old off waivers from the 49ers last week, but the team utilized a roster exemption with him unavailable for Week 9 due to the COVID-19 protocols when joining a new team. Pettis played 45 offensive snaps in the season opener but saw minimal playing time in the subsequent games and is without a catch this season. The 2018 second-round pick likely will open as a depth wideout for New York, but he could immediately contribute in the return game.
Nov 5, 2020
Won't play Week 9
Pettis (shoulder), whom the Giants claimed off waivers Wednesday, won't be eligible to play in Sunday's game at Washington while he waits to clear the NFL's COVID-19 protocol, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
All players moving from one organization to another must self-isolate for five days before reporting to work with their new clubs, so Pettis won't have enough time to get settled in with the Giants before Sunday's game. Pettis should be ready to join the Giants when the team begins Week 10 prep, and he'll likely have a clearer path to playing time in New York than he did in San Francisco. While Pettis likely won't be much more than a depth option at receiver so long as Darius Slayton, Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate are all available, special teams coach Thomas McGaughey said Wednesday that he thinks Pettis could take over as the team's punt returner.
Nov 4, 2020
Scooped off waivers
The Giants claimed Pettis off waivers from the 49ers on Wednesday, Michael Eisen of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2018 second-round pick was cut loose by the 49ers on Tuesday after playing 28 games with the team. He recorded 38 receptions, 576 receiving yards and seven touchdowns over his first two years with the league, but he was targeted just once over five games this season. Pettis is in need of a fresh start, and he'll get that in New York. However, his best-case scenario (barring an injury higher on the depth chart) is as the No. 4 wide receiver behind Darius Slayton, Sterling Shepard (toe/shoulder) and Golden Tate.
Nov 3, 2020
Waived by San Fran
Pettis (shoulder) was waived by the 49ers on Tuesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The team attempted to work out a trade prior to Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline but was unable to reach a deal. Pettis, a 2018 second-round pick, had 27 receptions for 467 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie, but he had only 11 catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns over the past two seasons. The 25-year-old has played only 66 offensive snaps in 2020 and is currently dealing with a shoulder injury. Pettis seems likely to garner some interest on the waiver wire.
Nov 2, 2020
Estimated as non-participant
Pettis (shoulder) was listed as a non-participant on Monday's estimated injury reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old picked up the shoulder injury during the second half of Sunday's loss to the Seahawks, so it's not a major surprising to see him labeled as a DNP. Pettis' ability to practice the next two days will provide a better idea of his availability for Thursday's contest versus Green Bay.
Nov 1, 2020
Injures shoulder Sunday
Pettis (shoulder) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis suffered his shoulder injury in the second half, when he was brought down hard and fumbled while returning a kickoff. If Pettis can't return, River Cracraft will be the 49ers only healthy wideout behind Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne and Trent Taylor.
Oct 25, 2020
Healthy scratch again
Pettis (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
The 2018 second-round pick will be on the sideline for the third straight contest. Coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier in the week the team and made and fielded calls about potentially trading Pettis, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, so it's not a major surprise to see him a healthy scratch. Richie James will serve as the depth wideout Sunday behind the usual contributors.
Oct 11, 2020
Not playing Sunday
Pettis (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old was dealing with a knee injury earlier in the week, but he avoided an injury designation and is now a healthy scratch for Week 5. Pettis has been targeted once through four games and didn't play an offensive snap during last week's loss to the Eagles.
Oct 8, 2020
Back at practice
Pettis (knee) was a full participant during Thursday's practice, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis suffered the knee injury in Week 4, but as evidenced by this news, the issue isn't serious enough to force him to miss game action. Now that Pettis appears fully healthy, look for him to assume his usual depth role, essentially a non-factor from a fantasy perspective.
Oct 7, 2020
Suits up Wednesday
Pettis (knee) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis suffered the knee injury in Sunday's loss to the Eagles, but the good news was he didn't aggravate the issue. The depth of the receiving room could be tested heading into Week 5's game against the Dolphins, as Trent Taylor (ankle) was also limited in Wednesday's practice. Expect Thursday's practice to shed some better light on both guys' injury status.
Oct 5, 2020
Should practice Wednesday
Pettis is expected to be at practice Wednesday after suffering a knee injury during Sunday's loss to the Eagles, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old returned to the field after leaving the game with the injury, and it appears he didn't further aggravate the issue. Pettis returned one punt for six yards and didn't play an offensive snap during the contest.
Sep 28, 2020
Remains a non-factor
Pettis played just eight snaps and did not receive a target in Sunday's 36-9 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was unable to get on the field on offense despite the 49ers running a bit thin at wide receiver. The third-year wideout showed significant attitude and work ethic improvements during training camp, but it hasn't translated to snaps in the regular season. With just one target through three games, Pettis should be left on the waiver wire until his situation improves.
Sep 14, 2020
No catches in loss
Pettis was unable to haul in his lone target in Sunday's 24-20 loss to Arizona.
ANALYSIS
So much for getting out of head coach Kyle Shanahan's doghouse during training camp. The sophomore was unable to make anything happen offensively even with Deebo Samuel (foot) and Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring) sitting this one out. Jimmy Garoppolo looked to his tight ends and running backs early and often, which might be a trend going forward this year. Even if Pettis earns another "start" next week against the Jets, it's hard to get excited after a dud like Sunday's.
Sep 9, 2020
Makes club, could have early impact
The 49ers kept Pettis on its 53-man roster heading into the 2020 regular season, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
After a woeful sophomore campaign, Pettis has begun his comeback tour with a strong camp and a spot on the active roster. The 2018 second-round pick has drawn praise from San Francisco's coaching staff for his renewed attitude and work ethic, which is what kept him from what would have been an embarrassing cut when rosters were trimmed this past weekend. The 24-year-old figures to handle punt return duties -- a skill he excelled at in college -- but he could be in line for an expanded role on offense if projected starters Deebo Samuel (foot) and Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring) aren't able to suit up Sunday against Arizona. Even in that scenario, it would be tough to recommend relying on Pettis out of the gates with an unknown target share on a run-heavy offense that boasts its star tight end as Jimmy Garoppolo's top target. That said, the wideout was once considered a high-upside asset, so it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see his stock rise as the season progresses.
Aug 23, 2020
Mends relationship with coach
Pettis and head coach Kyle Shanahan have cleared the air between them and will begin the season with a clean slate, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis entered the 2019 season with high expectations after a late breakout at the end of his rookie campaign, but he received criticism from his head coach after getting off to a slow start during training camp. The then 23-year-old responded negatively to the motivation attempts, finishing with just 109 yards and two scores over 11 games, and was even left as a healthy scratch during the Super Bowl. Pettis has reportedly come into his third year as a pro with a new mindset, patching the relationship between he and Shanahan in the process. With three receivers already ruled out for Week 1 and starter Deebo Samuel (foot) uncertain, the stars may align for Pettis to finally experience the breakout some had hoped he would undergo last year.
Aug 19, 2020
Getting chance to shine
Pettis has an opportunity to step up in a 49ers receiving corps dealing with a number of injuries and one player opting out, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
No. 1 wide receiver Deebo Samuel is recovering from a Jones fracture in his foot that is threatening his standing for Week 1. On top of that, Richie James (wrist) is on the active/non-football injury list, Jalen Hurd may have suffered a torn ACL, and Travis Benjamin decided not to play this season. Pettis has yet to live up to his standing as a 2018 second-round pick, following up a 27-467-5 line as a rookie with just 11 catches, 109 yards and two touchdowns last year. After not suiting up beyond Week 11, he now has a chance to take advantage of the current situation and get back into the WR rotation in San Francisco.
Apr 30, 2020
Heading toward roster bubble
Pettis may need to compete for a roster spot, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Unable to build on a successful finish to his rookie campaign, the 2018 second-round pick was limited to 11 catches in 11 games last season and didn't play a single snap in the playoffs. Coach Kyle Shanahan said he wants to see Pettis look like he's on a mission this offseason, but the selection of fellow wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk in the first round suggests the Niners aren't count on much. With Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Kendrick Bourne considered roster locks, the 49ers figure to have a large group of WRs competing for three roster spots, including Pettis, Trent Taylor (foot), Jalen Hurd, Richie James, Jauan Jennings and Travis Benjamin (quad). The second-round pedigree could work in Pettis' favor, but even then he might be limited to a depth role.
Feb 26, 2020
Facing crucial offseason
Coach Kyle Shanahan said he wants to see Pettis "on a mission" this offseason, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Unable to build on a strong finish to his rookie campaign, Pettis was limited to 11 receptions and 313 offensive snaps in 2019, eventually serving as a healthy scratch on gamedays. Shanahan said the lack of playing time was based on an accumulation of factors, including a lack of intensity running routes. Shanahan also hinted that the upcoming offseason could be make-or-break for Pettis' career, noting that he's seen some players "filter out" when they struggle to rebound from a sophomore slump. The 24-year-old wide receiver should at least have a chance to earn a significant role, as Deebo Samuel is the only locked-in starter for San Francisco's wide receiver group.
Feb 2, 2020
Healthy scratch for Super Bowl
Pettis (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's Super Bowl against Kansas City, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis has had a dramatic fall from grace with the 49ers throughout his sophomore season, making his inactive status for Super Bowl LIV a fitting end to the 2019 campaign. Though the second-year wideout was active for the NFC Championship against the Packers, he didn't play record any snaps during the contest.
Jan 24, 2020
Practices in full Friday
Pettis (illness) was a full practice participant Friday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis brushed off the illness that sidelined him Thursday, or at the very least was able to gut it out and fit in every practice rep to wrap up the first week of Super Bowl prep. Considering he hasn't seen a target since Week 10, though, he's unlikely to make a splash versus the Chiefs on Feb. 2.
Jan 24, 2020
Returns from illness
Pettis (illness) returned to practice Friday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis only missed one day and should be healthy with plenty of time to spare before the Super Bowl. He was technically active for the NFC Championship Game, but he didn't actually play any snaps in a 37-20 win over the Packers. Any involvement in the Super Bowl would come as a modest surprise.
Jan 23, 2020
Under the weather
Pettis did not practice Thursday due to an illness, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis will have a week and a half to return to full health ahead of the Super Bowl on Feb. 2, so there's not yet any reason to consider his availability in jeopardy. More pressingly, the second-year wideout has not recorded a snap on offense since Week 12 of the regular season. Having tumbled down to a depth role in San Francisco's receiver corps, Pettis will be an unlikely candidate to factor into the team's plans on offense even if he's at full strength.
Dec 11, 2019
Returns to full participation
Pettis (knee) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis has been sidelined by a knee injury for two consecutive games, but he appears on pace to be available for the 49ers' Week 15 tilt against the Falcons. Pettis has played no more than 33 offensive snaps in a single contest since Week 7, however, so don't expect a sudden burst in production upon his return.
Dec 8, 2019
Sitting out Week 14
Pettis (knee) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Saints, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers will be down two receivers in Pettis and Marquise Goodwin (knee/foot) in Week 14, but both players have been afterthoughts in coach Kyle Shanahan's offensive game plan of late. Even if Pettis shakes off the sprained knee in time for the Week 15 game against the Falcons, he likely won't be in line for more than a handful of snaps.
Dec 6, 2019
Questionable for Week 14
Pettis (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Saints, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis sat out Week 13's loss to the Ravens due to a lingering knee issue, and his status for Sunday's tilt against the Saints could come down to a game-time decision. The second-year pro plays a depth role in San Francisco's receiving corps. He hasn't seen more than three targets in a single game since Week 6.
Dec 5, 2019
Logs limited practice
Pettis (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday,Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis missed the team's Week 13 contest against the Raiders and is expected to miss a second consecutive game in Week 14. However, he practiced on a side field Wednesday and upgraded that to limited participation Thursday. That said, even if he is ruled out for Sunday's contest, he is trending in the right direction.
Dec 4, 2019
Officially DNP
Pettis (knee) was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday's practice, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Although Pettis was spotted working out on a side field, his participation wasn't enough to be marked as limited. The second-year wideout isn't expected to suit up Sunday against the Saints, so Marquise Goodwin and Richie James could see slight upticks in usage.
Dec 4, 2019
Rehabbing on side Wednesday
Pettis (knee) practiced on the side field Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis isn't expected to play Sunday against the Saints, and his inability to practice with the team aligns with that notion. The second-year pro likely won't have much responsibility when he returns to action, as Emmanuel Sanders, Deebo Samuel and Kendrick Bourne are expected to lead the way.
Dec 2, 2019
Likely out another week
Pettis (knee) isn't expected to be available for Sunday's game at New Orleans, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis suffered a left knee sprain at practice last week and was unable to play during Sunday's loss to the Ravens. The 24-year-old played a minimal offensive role in the weeks leading up to the injury, so his availability is unlikely to impact the offense.
Nov 29, 2019
Won't face Ravens
Pettis (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game in Baltimore, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis is believed to have suffered a knee sprain during Wednesday's practice, adding one more obstacle to a disappointing season. His absence won't have much impact on the Week 13 gameplan, as he played just nine snaps on offense the past two weeks.
Nov 28, 2019
Doesn't practice Thursday
Pettis (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis injured himself in Wednesday's practice and was pretty likely to sit out just a day later. If he is able to return Friday, he would have a better chance to suit up against the Ravens.
Nov 17, 2019
Playing Week 11
Pettis (back) is listed as active Sunday against the Cardinals, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Available for all 10 of the 49ers games this season, Pettis hasn't made much of an impact when on the field in the previous nine, posting an 11-109-2 line on 24 targets. Top wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (ribs) is banged up at the moment, but Deebo Samuel and Kendrick Bourne (and not Pettis) profited when the veteran was knocked out of the team's Week 10 loss to the Seahawks. As a result, Pettis may be relegated to a situational role yet again on this game day.
Nov 15, 2019
Questionable for Sunday
Pettis (groin) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis arguably has a bit more intrigue with Emmanuel Sanders (ribs) also listed as questionable, but recent comments from coach Kyle Shanahan don't bode well for the second-year pro. The 49ers used Deebo Samuel and Kendrick Bourne ahead of Pettis after Sanders suffered the rib injury during Monday's 27-24 loss to Seattle. It'll be interesting to see the 49ers' inactive list approximately 90 minutes before Sunday's 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff, as they have five players listed as out or doubtful and a slew of others considered questionable. The team may ultimately need to use active roster spots on one or two players who aren't actually healthy enough to take snaps.
Nov 14, 2019
Still has cap on practice reps
Pettis (back) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Kicking off the week with back-to-back capped session leaves Pettis in some limbo for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. His listing on Friday's injury report will provide a sense of his chances to suit up Week 11.
Nov 13, 2019
Limited by back injury
Pettis was a limited practice participant Wednesday due to a back injury.
ANALYSIS
Pettis is coming off an uneventful performance against the Seahawks on Monday as he went without a catch on three targets, but he apparently picked up the back issue in the contest. The 24-year-old has been minimally involved in the offense over the last three games, so even if healthy he shouldn't garner much fantasy interest.
Oct 25, 2019
Good for Sunday
Pettis (knee) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Panthers, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis played 92 percent of snaps on offense in last week's 9-0 win over Washington, but he's in danger of a significant reduction with Emmanuel Sanders joining the 49ers and Deebo Samuel cleared to return from a groin injury. Meanwhile, Marquise Goodwin is listed as questionable for unspecified non-injury reasons.

Tending to knee injury
Pettis was limited at Thursday's practice by a knee injury, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis was impacted by knee injuries at times during his rookie season in 2018, missing four games in the process. In the current campaign, he hasn't missed a contest but has played through groin and pectoral issues. With another health concern in tow, Pettis again is a question mark as the 49ers gear up for a visit from the Panthers on Sunday.

Another preseason injury revealed
Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Pettis had been dealing with a pectoral injury in addition a previously-reported groin injury the begin the season, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis' groin injury was kept under wraps to begin the season, and this pectoral injury is only now being announced to the public despite it developing during the preseason. This could help explain the second-year wideout's lack of production through three weeks (five receptions on six targets for 27 yards and a touchdown). The good news is that Shanahan stated that Pettis has been regaining both lower- and upper-body strength, and that culminated in the receiver's best stat line against the Steelers in Week 3. The 49ers' upcoming bye week could help the 23-year-old inch even closer to mid-season form. While fantasy owners are unlikely to trust Pettis enough to start him following the rough start, it is worth noting that he has been seeing nearly as many offensive snaps over the past two games (68) as Deebo Samuel (70). It appears that the two young wideouts are in a starter's timeshare alongside Marquise Goodwin, who leads all San Francisco wide receivers with 90 offensive snaps over that same two-week perio

Not listed on injury report
Pettis (groin) is not listed on the injury report and is expected to play Sunday against the Buccaneers, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
ANALYSIS
Pettis had been hampered by a minor groin strain, but an unrestricted practice Thursday hinted that he would suit up Sunday. The 23-year-old has had his starting role threatened by the coaching staff this preseason -- in an effort to motivate the receiver -- but his usage during the exhibition games would signify that he is a starter opposite Marquise Goodwin. The Bucs had one of the worst passing defenses in 2018, so there is matchup appeal for Pettis, even following his tumultuous preseason.

Progress to full participation
Pettis (groin) practiced in full Thursday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis endeared a topsy-turvy training camp and preseason, which culminated with the second-year wideout suffering a minor groin injury in late August. He kicked off Week 1 prep with a limited session Wednesday, so his progression to an uncapped practice one day later bodes well for his availability Sunday at Tampa Bay.

Limited in practice Wednesday
Pettis (groin) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury Newsreports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis' groin injury does not appear to be a long-term concern, but it remains to be see whether his chances of suiting up Week 1 at Tampa Bay will be impacted by his health. The second-year receiver's exact role in San Francisco's offense is currently uncertain, though he certainly projects to serve as an important part of the team's aerial attack. Pettis dealt with criticism from coach Kyle Shanahan through training camp and the preseason, and will work to respond by stepping up his consistency when back to full health.

Still has Shanahan's confidence
Coach Kyle Shanahan said he's been critical of Pettis (groin) because he believes the wide receiver is talented enough to become the best player on the 49ers, Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle reports. "[Pettis] can be our best player on this team," Shanahan said. "He can be our No. 1 receiver, our No. 2 receiver, our slot receiver, or just a role receiver. And he's shown that he can do all of that, but he hasn't shown it consistently enough so that we know exactly where to put him."
ANALYSIS
Shanahan clarified that his uncertainty involves the exact nature of Pettis' role, not whether the 23-year-old will be an important part of the team. Pettis got the start and took regular snaps with the first-team offense in Saturday's preseason win over Kansas City, but he also stayed in the game until early in the fourth quarter, long after Jimmy Garoppolo, Marquise Goodwin, Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida had been removed. Now dealing with a minor groin injury, Pettis acknowledged Monday that the criticism from Shanahan is valid, noting that he needs to improve his route running and sense of urgency. Health permitting, Pettis should be a big part of the gameplan for Week 1 at Tampa Bay, though his role may suffer if he struggles early. The 49ers hope solid depth will make up for their lack of a clear No. 1 wideout, with Goodwin and Pettis joined by Deebo Samuel, Trent Taylor (foot), Kendrick Bourne, Jordan Matthews, Richie James and Jalen Hurd (back).

Nursing groin injury
Pettis disclosed Monday that he's managing a "minor" groin injury, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Pettis also addressed recent challenges from coach Kyle Shanahan, acknowledging a need to improve his route running and play with increased urgency. The second-year wideout appears likely for a key Week 1 role assuming a full recovery, though he may see a short leash until he plays to a level that alleviates the coaching staff's worries.

Managing injury
Pettis worked on the side of the field to begin Monday's practice due to an undisclosed injury, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen what sort of injury Pettis is dealing with, but any time missed due to injury could impact his Week 1 role. Coach Kyle Shanahan reiterated Sunday that Pettis is competing for a starting role, according to Matt Barrow of The Athletic, citing a lack of consistency for the second-year wideout. With Trent Taylor (foot) expected to miss the start of the regular season and Jalen Hurd (back) nursing an injury, San Francisco's wideout corps could struggle to provide depth until Pettis gets fully healthy regardless of whether he earns a starting gig.
