Seven tackles in Week 12 win
Speed recorded seven tackles (three solo) in the Texans' win over the Bills on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Speed played just 47 percent of the defensive snaps and 16 snaps on special teams, and he matched his season-high with the seven tackles against Buffalo. On the season, Speed has played 43 percent of the defensive snaps and 55 percent of the downs on special teams. He's produced 43 tackles (26 solo) and one pass breakups across 11 appearances.
Oct 22, 2025
Logs seven stops vs. Seahawks
Speed tallied seven total tackles (six solo) during Monday night's 27-19 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Speed played a season-high 44 defensive snaps in Houston's Week 7 loss. The 30-year-old linebacker has now tallied 23 total tackles in his first six games as a Texan, contributing both defensively (116 snaps) and on special teams (93 snaps). He's expected to remain one of Houston's top linebackers in the Week 8 matchup against the 49ers.
Mar 29, 2025
Remaining in AFC South
Speed and the Texans have agreed upon a one-year, $5 million contract, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Speed had a breakthrough season statistically in 2024, tallying career-high marks with 142 tackles and five defensed passes (including one interception) over 15 regular-season contests with the Colts. However, his overall PFF grade of 56.7 ranked just 134th among NFL linebackers due largely to a poor grade in pass coverage. Speed has also worked on special teams throughout his career and will likely be part of that unit while also providing depth at linebacker for the Texans. His role on defense could be magnified if Christian Harris, who played in only three regular-season games in 2024 due to a calf injury, or Azeez Al-Shaair, who logged just 11 regular-season appearances, have any trouble staying on the field again.

Notches 142 stops in 2024
Speed tallied 142 total tackles (93 solo) and five passes defended, including one interception, across 17 regular-season games in 2024.
ANALYSIS
The Tarleton State product had the most productive season of his career in 2024, setting new career highs in total tackles and passes defended while also nabbing the first interception of his career. Despite finishing the season as Indianapolis' third-leading tackler, Speed recorded the 12th-most stops in the NFL. Coming off a career year, Speed is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the new league year. He's expected to be a sought-after player, likely signing a multi-year deal with a team in need of inside-linebacker help this offseason.
Dec 29, 2024
Good to go against Giants
Speed (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Speed didn't play in Week 16 against the Titans due to a knee injury. He opened the week with consecutive DNPs, but he managed to log a full practice Friday, which was enough for him to be cleared to play Sunday. Speed will start at linebacker alongside Zaire Franklin and Jaylon Carlies while Segun Olubi, Cameron McGrone and Grant Stuard provide rotational depth.
Dec 27, 2024
Questionable to face G-Men
Speed (knee) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
After a pair of DNPs to start the week, Speed was listed as a full participant in Friday's practice. He missed Week 16 with the injury but appears to have a chance to play Sunday. Jaylon Carlies filled in as an every-down linebacker alongside Zaire Franklin in Speed's absence last week.
Dec 20, 2024
Out against Tennessee
Speed (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Titans, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Speed will miss his second game of the season as the Colts take on the Titans at home. The sixth-year linebacker missed Week 7 against the Dolphins with a knee problem, and it very likely could be the same injury again. His next chance to see the field will be Week 17 versus the Giants.
Dec 17, 2024
Double-digit stops in loss
Speed recorded 13 total tackles (seven solo) in Sunday's 31-13 loss to the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Speed led the Colts in tackles in Week 15, reaching double-digit stops for the fourth time in seven games and eighth time overall in 2024. The linebacker has now compiled 130 total tackles (87 solo) and four passes defensed, including an interception, over 13 contests this season.
Dec 2, 2024
Has nice day in win
Speed recorded nine tackles (eight solo) and a pass defensed during Sunday's 25-24 win at New England.
ANALYSIS
Speed tallied nine-plus tackles for the fifth time in his last six contests in Week 13, and his pass breakup prevented a big gain on the Patriots' final drive of the game. He projects as a good IDP option for the fantasy playoffs after the Colts' bye in Week 14.
Nov 25, 2024
Another double-digit tackle game
Speed finished with 11 tackles (six solo) in Sunday's 24-6 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Speed has now recorded double-digit stops in seven of the 11 games he's played in this season. He has also played on more than 90 percent of the defensive snaps in all 11 contests. In total, the linebacker has 108 tackles (72 solo) and three pass breakups, including an interception, in 2024.
Nov 18, 2024
Leads team in tackles in win
Speed recorded nine tackles (four solo) in Sunday's 28-27 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
The linebacker also played on more than 95 percent of the defensive snaps for the 10th time in the 10 games he's played in this season. Speed now has 97 tackles (66 solo) and three pass breakups, including an interception, in 2024.
Nov 17, 2024
Getting green light
Speed (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Despite drawing a questionable tag, Speed was on track to play in Week 11 after logging a full practice Friday. In nine appearances this season, Speed has recorded 88 tackles (62 solo), including six TFLs, and three pass breakups, including one interception.
Nov 15, 2024
Questionable for Sunday
Speed (knee) is questionable for Sunday's contest against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Speed was limited Wednesday and Thursday and practiced in full Friday, but he was still given a questionable tag. Speed has started all nine games he's appeared in this season, racking up 88 tackles (62 solo), including six TFLs, three pass breakups and one interception.
Nov 11, 2024
First career pick
Speed recorded six tackles (four solo) and an interception in Sunday's 30-20 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Speed recorded fewer than 10 tackles for just the third time this season, but he managed to record his first career interception in the second quarter. The 2019 fifth-round pick is on the final year of his second NFL contract, and he ranks second in the league with 62 solo tackles through nine games, just two shy of Budda Baker, who has played 10 games.
Nov 4, 2024
Leads team in tackles
Speed recorded 12 tackles (nine solo), including two for a loss, in Sunday's 21-13 loss to the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
The linebacker also played on 96 percent of the defensive snaps. Speed is now tied with Arizona's Budda Baker for the league lead in solo tackles with 58. He has 82 total tackles on the year.
Oct 28, 2024
Ten tackles in return
Speed had 10 total tackles, a tackle for a loss and a pass defensed in Sunday's loss at Houston.
ANALYSIS
Speed missed last week's win over Miami due to a knee injury but was back to full speed. He played on all 71 of the defense's 71 snaps.
Oct 23, 2024
Back on field
Speed (knee) was a full participant during practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Speed was unable to play in the Colts' Week 7 win over the Dolphins despite logging a full practice last Friday. After opening this week with another full practice, the Tarleton State product should be good to go Sunday against the Texans.
Oct 20, 2024
Ruled out for Week 7
Speed (knee) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Speed initially drew the questionable tag for Sunday's game after logging a full practice Friday. However, the knee injury was severe enough for him to be downgraded to doubtful Saturday, and the 2019 fifth-round pick will officially miss his first game of the regular season. Expect Grant Stuard to start alongside Segun Olubi and Zaire Franklin for Sunday's game.
Oct 19, 2024
Unlikely to play vs. Miami
Speed (knee) has been downgraded from questionable to doubtful ahead of Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Speed presumably picked up a knee injury during the Colts' Week 6 win over the Titans. He opened the week as a DNP on Wednesday, but he upgraded his practice participation over the next two days and was a full participant in Friday's session. Speed initially drew the questionable tag as a result, but it appears the knee injury is severe enough for him to miss his first game of the regular season. If Speed is indeed inactive for Sunday's contest, Grant Stuard should draw the start at linebacker alongside Zaire Franklin and Segun Olubi.
Oct 7, 2024
Picks up seven tackles in loss
Speed recorded seven tackles (six solo), including one tackle for loss, in the Colts' loss to the Jaguars on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Coming off a career-best 12 solo tackles in Week 4 against the Steelers, Speed's seven tackles versus Jacksonville marked a new season-low. On the year, Speed has logged 54 tackles (40 solo) and one QB hit across five starts.
Oct 1, 2024
Career-high 12 solo tackles Sunday
Speed finished Sunday's 27-24 win over the Steelers with 13 tackles (12 solo).
ANALYSIS
Speed once again led the Colts in tackling Sunday and was one of five Indianapolis defenders to play all 70 snaps on defense. Speed's 12 solo tackles is a career high, and his 13 combined tackles tied a career best he set in Week 18 against the Texans in 2023. Speed's 34 solo tackles leads the NFL through the first four games of the regular season, and his 47 total tackles is tied with teammate Nick Cross.
Sep 23, 2024
Secures double-digit tackles
Speed recorded 12 total tackles (six solo) in Sunday's 21-16 win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Speed was able to reach double-digit tackles for the third straight week to open the season, finishing second to Zaire Franklin in stops in the victory. Through three games in 2024, Speed has compiled 34 total tackles (22 solo).
Sep 16, 2024
Secures 11 tackles in loss
Speed recorded 11 total tackles (eight solo) in Sunday's 16-10 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Speed was able to go compiled double-digit stops for the second consecutive week to open the 2024 season. Through two weeks, the linebacker has produced 21 total tackles (16 solo) while operating as the Colts' primary weakside linebacker.
Sep 9, 2024
Double-digit stops in loss
Speed compiled 10 tackles (eight solo) in Sunday's 29-27 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Speed had somewhat of a breakout season last year, his fifth in the league, earning a larger role which saw him hit the century mark in tackles for the first time in his career. His performance in Week 1 has him well on the way to doing so again in 2024.
Jan 8, 2024
Career-high tackle total Saturday
Speed recorded 13 tackles (10 solo) in Saturday's 23-19 loss versus the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Over 16 games this season, Speed recorded 102 tackles (78 solo) including a sack and three forced fumbles. It was a career-best year for him in essentially every category. He has one more season on his current contract and currently figures to play a significant role at linebacker for the Colts again in 2024.
Jan 1, 2024
Leading tackler in win
Speed finished Sunday's 23-20 win over the Raiders with 12 tackles (eight solo).
ANALYSIS
It's the third-straight game Speed has finished with double-digit tackles and has 34 tackles since missing Week 14 with a knee injury. He's up to a career-high 89 tackles over 15 games this season.
Dec 25, 2023
Records 13 tackles
Speed finished with 13 tackles (10 solo), including a tackle for a loss, and two passes defensed in the Colts' 29-10 loss to the Falcons on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Speed now has 23 tackles in two games since returning from a knee injury. The fifth-year pro has set a career high in tackles this season with 78. The linebacker also has four pass breakups and three forced fumbles.
Dec 18, 2023
Ten tackles in win
Speed had ten total tackles in Saturday's win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Speed missed the previous game with a knee injury but returned and had a big impact. He started at weak-side linebacker and played on 52 of the defense's 58 snaps.
Dec 12, 2023
Goes through walkthrough
Speed (knee) was a full participant in Tuesday's walk-through.
ANALYSIS
Per Nate, head coach Shane Steichen noted Tuesday that Speed is "feeling good" about his knee. His status for Saturday's contest against the Steelers will become more clear once his participation in practices is known. Speed has 55 tackles (41 solo), including one sack, and two forced fumbles in 12 games this season.
Dec 12, 2023
Making progress in recovery
Coach Shane Steichen said Tuesday that Speed (knee) is "feeling good" and "will be all right," Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
The Colts are optimistic Speed has at least avoided a long-term injury, but Steichen didn't mention him when listing players whose availability for Saturday's game against the Steelers will be determined in practice. As such, it looks like Speed is unlikely to suit up. If Speed is forced to miss Week 15, Ronnie Harrison will likely receive another opportunity to start at weakside linebacker.
Dec 9, 2023
Won't play Week 14
Speed (knee) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's contest against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Speed popped up on the Colts' injury report Wednesday and did not participate in Thursday's practice. He was able to log a limited session Friday, but the knee issue appears severe enough that he will miss his first game of the year. In Speed's absence, Segun Olubi or Grant Stuard could draw the start at weakside linebacker for Sunday's game.
Dec 8, 2023
Could play Week 14
Speed (knee) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old linebacker could be trending in the right direction to play Sunday, as he went from not participating in Thursday's practice to limited work Friday. If Speed is unable to suit up in Week 14, expect Grant Stuard and Cameron McGrone to see increased work in the Colts' linebacker corps.
Dec 6, 2023
Pops up on injury report
Speed (knee) was non-participant on Wednesday's practice estimate.
ANALYSIS
The Colts only completed a walkthrough Wednesday and did not hold a typical practice, so Speed's absence may not mean much. There is also no other indication the 28-year-old suffered an injury in Sunday's win over the Titans. However, his practice status Thursday should bring more clarity to his potential status for Sunday's matchup with the Bengals.
Dec 4, 2023
Compiles eight tackles in win
Speed recorded eight tackles (six solo) in Sunday's 31-28 overtime win against Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
Speed was able to compile a season-high eight stops in the victory and he's now registered 14 tackles over the last two games combined, his most in two-game stretch this year. The linebacker has stepped into a larger role since the team let Shaquille Leonard go late last month.
Nov 22, 2023
Taking over as starter
Speed is expected to take over as the Colts' starting weakside linebacker after the team waived Shaquille Leonard on Tuesday, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Indianapolis cut Leonard in a somewhat surprising move Tuesday, leaving a large gap in their front seven for the remainder of the season. Speed was already on track for a career-best campaign in the tackle department with 41 total so far, and his projected uptick in playing time could put him on the IDP radar for the rest of 2023.
Sep 18, 2023
Gets first sack of season
Speed had six tackles, a sack and two tackles for a loss in Sunday's win at Houston.
ANALYSIS
Speed works as the team's strong-side linebacker but comes off the field when the team played a nickelback. He played on 45 of the defense's 84 snaps. He also gets work on special teams with 23 snaps.
Sep 11, 2023
Strong outing in loss
Speed had five total tackles and a tackle for a loss in Sunday's loss to Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
Speed worked as the team's strong-side linebacker but came off the field when the team played a nickelback. He played on 29 of the defense's 70 snaps but was very effective with two stops and allowed only one reception for no yards on the only pass targeted at him. He's also a key member of the special teams where he played 25 snaps.
Sep 6, 2023
Not on injury report Wednesday
Speed (concussion) was absent from Indianapolis' practice report Wednesday ahead of Sunday's game versus Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
It took a week and a half, but it looks like Speed has finally exited concussion protocol, meaning he should be ready to go for Week 1. He's appeared in 17 games for two straight seasons leading up to 2023, and he'll try to keep that streak up this year.
Aug 30, 2023
Practices in non-contact jersey
Speed (concussion) was at practice in a red noncontact jersey Wednesday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Shane Steichen revealed Saturday that Speed was in the concussion protocol, but it was encouraging to see the linebacker return to the practice field Wednesday. He'll have a week and a half to get back to full strength before the Colts' regular-season opener against Jacksonville on Sept. 10.
Aug 26, 2023
Enters concussion protocol
Colts coach Shane Steichen said Saturday that the team has placed Speed in the concussion protocol, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
Speed was not known to be dealing with any issue prior to Saturday's comments from Steichen, likely indicating that the linebacker sustained a head injury at some point during the Colts' 27-13 preseason win against Philadelphia on Thursday. The 28-year-old played a significant role on special teams and as a primary backup linebacker last season, recording a career-high 63 tackles, one sack and two passes defended. Speed figures to step up into a full-time starting role at weakside linebacker in 2023, so it will be worth monitoring his status heading into the season opener against Jacksonville on Sunday, Sept. 10.
Aug 10, 2023
Back at practice
Speed (ankle) returned to practice earlier this week, Mike Chappell of Fox59.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Speed missed practice time last week, but he was back on the field Sunday, intercepting a pass from Gardner Minshew during a two-minute drill. The 28-year-old's ability to recover quickly is good news for the defense, as Speed is expected to serve a much larger role in the team's linebacker corps this season.
Aug 3, 2023
Remains sidelined
Speed (ankle) will not practice Thursday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Speed left practice early Tuesday with the injury and is still not fully recovered. The 28-year-old set career highs in numerous categories last season, including tackles, while also recording his first NFL sack. He's expected to be the team's starting weakside linebacker this season, so getting him healthy and on the field will be a priority for the Colts' defense.
Mar 14, 2023
Staying put for two more years
Speed agreed on a two-year contract to remain with the Colts on Monday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Indianpolis' fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft has steadily increased his production every season, and Speed set a career high with 63 tackles in 2022 while also notching the first sack of his career. Speed will likely be slated for a similar part-time role on the Indianapolis defense in 2023.
Nov 29, 2022
Seven stops in MNF
Speed recorded seven tackles (three solo) during Monday's 24-17 loss to the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Speed tied cornerback Stephon Gilmore for the Colts' third-most tackles against Pittsburgh. While he only played 18 of his 39 snaps on defense Week 12, the linebacker still notched six defensive stops, including five on just one drive in the second quarter. Speed has now set a new career high for tackles (43) while primarily playing on special teams over 12 games. However, he should continue playing as a primary reserve behind starting linebackers Bobby Okereke and Zaire Franklin against Dallas this coming Sunday.
Nov 6, 2022
Will play Sunday
Speed (ankle) is active Sunday against the Patriots, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
ANALYSIS
Speed was unable to practice Friday, but he's good to go Sunday against New England. His ability to suit up will bolster the team's depth at linebacker.
Nov 4, 2022
Questionable for Week 9 at Patriots
Speed (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at New England.
ANALYSIS
Speed did not practice Friday after he was a full participant Wednesday and then downgraded to limited participation Thursday, so he's trending in the wrong direction ahead of Sunday. If he indeed sits out at the Patriots, Indianapolis would be left without much depth at linebacker behind Zaire Franklin, Bobby Okereke and Shaquille Leonard.
Sep 12, 2022
Gets start in season opener
Speed started at weak-side linebacker and had a sack and seven total tackles in Sunday's tie at Houston.
ANALYSIS
Speed moved into a starting role with Shaquille Leonard out after back surgery and had a strong game as he made several big plays. He played on 38 of the defense's 70 snaps as he came off in nickle and dime packages. It's not clear when Leonard may return, so Speed could continue to get a larger workload next week at Jacksonville.
Dec 28, 2021
Racks up nine tackles
Speed posted nine tackles (eight solo) and a pass breakup in Saturday's 22-16 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Darius Leonard tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, so Speed was thrust into a starting role with little notice. Speed -- a 2019 fifth-round pick -- excelled, playing every defensive snap and tying for the team lead in tackles. Leonard will miss this Sunday's game against the Raiders because he's unvaccinated, so Speed will get another chance to start. He'll should be considered a solid IDP option in fantasy championships.
Sep 14, 2021
Limited to special teams
Speed did not record a tackle in Sunday's loss to Seattle. He played 18 snaps, all on special teams.
ANALYSIS
The third-year linebacker appears to be healthy after hyper-extending his knee in practice Aug. 13. He made a case for increased playing time at linebacker in the preseason, but for now looks limited to special teams.
Aug 30, 2021
Practicing again
George Bremer of The Anderson Herald BulletinSpeed (knee) returned to practice Monday, George Bremer reports.
ANALYSIS
The third-year linebacker appears to be healthy after hyper-extending his knee in practice August 13th. Speed made a speedy recovery and should be in the mix for a depth position in the Colts linebacking core.
Aug 13, 2021
Hurts knee in practice
Speed injured his knee in practice Thursday, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Speed played in 15 games for the Colts last season in a special teams role, racking up nine tackles. It's unknown how long the third-year linebacker will be out, but as long as the injury isn't serious Speed should resume his special teams role in the upcoming season.
