Active versus Denver
Mitchell is active for Sunday's game against the Broncos, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
With Isiah Pacheco (knee) inactive, Brashard Smith and Mitchell are on hand to work behind Kareem Hunt on Sunday. Mitchell is thus slated to make his season debut with the Chiefs, while Clyde Edwards-Helaire was not elevated from the team's practice squad ahead of Week 11 action.

Inactive Sunday
Mitchell is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bills, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
With Mitchell a healthy scratch and Isiah Pacheco (knee) having previously been ruled out, look for Kareem Hunt and Brashard Smith to lead the Chiefs' Week 9 backfield, with practice squad elevation Clyde Edwards-Helaire also available to mix in.
Sep 28, 2025
Healthy scratch for Week 4
Mitchell (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Ravens, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell will be a healthy scratch for a fourth consecutive game, and his next chance to make his 2025 regular-season debut is Week 5 against the Jaguars on Monday, Oct. 6. Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt and rookie seventh-rounder Brashard Smith will be the Chiefs' three active running backs for Sunday's contest.
Sep 14, 2025
Won't play versus Eagles
Mitchell (coach's decision) has been ruled out for Kansas City's matchup versus the Eagles on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell will now be a healthy scratch for the second straight week as the Chiefs will once again only use three running backs. His next chance to play will be the team's Week 3 matchup versus the Giants next Sunday.

Getting some first-team looks
Mitchell, Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt got first-team snaps Thursday, along with a "sprinkling" of rookie Brashard Smith, according to Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com.
ANALYSIS
It can perhaps be taken as a good sign for Mitchell that he's getting first-team reps, which might instead be cornered by Pacheco and Hunt. Mitchell also has the contracts working his his favor, with a one-year, $2.5 million deal that includes $1.35 million guaranteed, while Hunt has a one-year, $1.5 million deal with $850,000 guaranteed. Pacheco is presumably a lock to make the roster, but everything else is up for grabs this summer in the Kansas City backfield between Hunt, Mitchell, Smith and UDFA Elijah Young. For Mitchell, the biggest challenge is staying healthy, as he played just 16 games over his final three seasons in San Francisco after running for 963 yards as a rookie in 2021. He's apparently made a full recovery from the torn hamstring that put him on injured reserve for all of last season, coming back healthy with a new team and a real shot to compete for touches.

Finds new home in Kansas City
The Chiefs are in line to sign Mitchell (hamstring) to a one-year contract worth up to $3.5 million, Tommy Call III of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell missed his entire 2024 campaign with San Francisco after undergoing hamstring surgery last August, but he projects to be ready for the start of offseason activities with his new club. Across four years with the 49ers, the oft-injured Mitchell only managed to suit up for 27 of a possible 68 regular-season games, but he now finds an intriguing landing spot with a solid potential ceiling, should he manage to stay healthy and put his trademark speed to use. Kareem Hunt is a pending unrestricted free agent for the Chiefs, but Isiah Pacheco has one year remaining on his rookie deal, leaving Mitchell in likely position to handle a depth role.

Needs surgery on hamstring
Mitchell will have surgery on his hamstring after being placed on injured reserve Tuesday, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports.
ANALYSIS
Out for most of the summer with a hamstring injury, Mitchell returned to practice Aug. 21 but then suffered a more serious hamstring injury not long thereafter. He's now out for the season and scheduled for surgery, leaving Jordan Mason as the presumed No. 2 running back ahead of a Week 1 matchup with the Jets. The 49ers hope to get Christian McCaffrey (calf) back in practice soon, and they're backfield depth suddenly looks shaky with Isaac Guerendo bothered by a groin injury and Cody Schrader claimed off waivers by the division-rival Rams. Mason and Patrick Taylor are the only fully healthy RBs on the roster or practice squad.
Aug 27, 2024
Going to injured reserve
The 49ers placed Mitchell (undisclosed) on injured reserve Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell kicked off August with a strained hamstring that sidelined him for a good portion of training camp and the entire preseason slate, but he returned to practice last Wednesday, signaling he was making progress in his recovery. It's unclear if the aforementioned health concern precipitated this move, but he'll nonetheless miss the entire season. With Mitchell on IR, Jordan Mason, Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor will be the reserve running backs behind Christian McCaffrey (calf) to begin the campaign.
Aug 23, 2024
Not suiting up Friday
Mitchell isn't in line to play in Friday's preseason game in Las Vegas, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
A strained hamstring sidelined Mitchell for the first two exhibitions, and even though he returned to practice Wednesday, the 49ers will opt to keep him in street clothes two days later. He'll thus turn his focus to Week 1, when he's expected to serve as the primary backup to All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey (calf). In 27 regular-season games in his three-year career, Mitchell has averaged 4.7 YPC while scoring 10 total touchdowns.
Aug 21, 2024
Retakes practice field
Mitchell (hamstring) resumed practicing Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has been sidelined due to a strained hamstring since Aug. 6, but he's managed to resume practicing ahead of San Francisco's preseason finale against the Raiders on Friday. The 49ers could still opt to hold Mitchell out of exhibition action, but he looks ready to suit up Week 1 versus the Jets. Meanwhile, while Christian McCaffrey (calf) continues to work his way back, Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) and Jordan Mason (hip) both also resumed practicing this week.
Aug 10, 2024
Likely not playing Saturday
Mitchell (hamstring) is not expected to play in Saturday's preseason opener, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Areareports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers have a numbered of injured running backs including Christian McCaffrey (calf) and Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) also not playing Saturday, but it doesn't seem as if possible backup Jordan Mason will see extensive snaps. As a result, Cody Schrader, Matt Breida and Patrick Taylor could see plenty of opportunities.
Aug 6, 2024
Has strained hamstring
Coach Kyle Shanahan relayed Tuesday that Mitchell is dealing with a strained hamstring, Lindsey Pallares of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, Christian McCaffrey has a calf strain that figures to sideline him a couple of weeks and Isaac Guerendo has been slowed by a hamstring issue. To bolster their backfield depth amidst the injuries, the 49ers have added Matt Breida to the mix. Once Mitchell returns to the field, he'll look to cement his standing as McCaffrey 's top backup.
Jul 30, 2024
Facing challenge for backup role?
Jordan Mason may challenge Mitchell for the No. 2 RB role, Jordan Elliott of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
A report from the offseason program suggested Mitchell was still the "clear No. 2" running back, but Mason's continued development has potential to complicate things, or at least lead to a committee situation in the event Christian McCaffrey is injured. San Francisco's strong backfield depth could even make Mitchell a trade target heading into the final year of his rookie contract, although the 49ers would probably feel better about that if fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo was practicing rather than nursing a hamstring injury. Mitchell still makes sense as a late-round pick in fantasy drafts, as it's hard to know if the camp hype surrounding Mason really matters relative to Mitchell's solid track record when tasked with a lead role. There's even potential for Mitchell's value to rise considerably between now and Week 1, either via a trade or a McCaffrey injury.

Facing challenge for backup role
Jordan Mason may challenge Mitchell for the No. 2 RB role, Jordan Elliott of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was still viewed as the clear No. 2 running back as recently as minicamp in June, but Mason's continued development may be complicating things. San Francisco's strong backfield depth behind Christian McCaffrey could even make Mitchell a trade target heading into the final year of his rookie contract, although the 49ers would probably feel better about that if fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo was practicing rather than nursing a hamstring injury.
Jun 7, 2024
Still the No. 2 back
Mitchell remains the clear No. 2 running back for San Francisco, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Lombardi notes that the Niners have a history of trading backup running backs (Matt Breida, Jeff Wilson) when they're happy with their depth at the position. That could be an option this summer, though it's not necessarily likely, with Mitchell in the final year of his contract and a pair of rookies (fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo, UDFA Cody Schrader) getting work at minicamp. The 49ers also have returning veteran Jordan Mason, but he's mostly played special teams and has never managed to move above Mitchell on the depth chart when Mitchell's been healthy. The long-term plan probably entails Guerendo taking over as the No. 2 RB behind Christian McCaffrey, but Mitchell looks on track to handle the role again this season.
Jan 31, 2024
Cashes in short TD
Mitchell had four carries for seven yards and a touchdown in the NFC Conference Championship win over the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was able to unearth a short rushing touchdown despite seeing just six snaps on offense (nine percent). The 25-year-old spelled starter Christian McCaffrey (20-90-2) in the fourth quarter after the latter came just a few yards short of his third rushing touchdown of the game. Sunday's workload against Detroit marked an increase over the zero touches Mitchell received in the divisional round win over the Packers. Barring injury, CMC figures to handle as many touches as the superstar tailback can handle against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Feb. 11, leaving Mitchell as a low-end DFS option despite him vulturing a touchdown this week.
Jan 8, 2024
Starts in place of CMC
Mitchell (illness) rushed for 52 yards and a touchdown on 14 attempts while catching both of his targets for 15 additional yards in Sunday's 21-20 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
The NFC's No. 1 seed opted to sit multiple stars in Week 18 with nothing to play for against the Rams on Sunday. Mitchell took full advantage of Christian McCaffrey's absence by leading the team in all rushing categories while scoring his second touchdown in as many weeks. The oft-injured back was only dealing with an illness prior to Sunday's loss, and with an extra week of rest in store for all San Francisco players, Mitchell should be available to backup CMC in the playoffs when the team resumes play on either Jan. 20 or 21.
Jan 5, 2024
Cleared to face Rams
Mitchell (illness) doesn't have a game designation for Sunday against the Rams, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell overcame an illness and may now make his first start of the season with Christian McCaffrey (calf) ruled out for Sunday's game. It is possible Jordan Mason and/or Tyrion Davis-Price also get some of McCaffrey's usual snaps/touches, especially with the 49ers locked into the No. 1 seed for the NFC playoffs.
Jan 4, 2024
Limited in return to practice
Mitchell (illness) was limited at practice Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell wasn't able to mix into drills Wednesday due to an illness, so his return in some capacity one day later is a step in the right direction as the 49ers prepare for Sunday's game against the Rams. The team will be without at least quarterback Brock Purdy (coach's decision) and running back Christian McCaffrey (calf) in that contest, which may lead to a more run-based focus with backup Sam Darnold under center. A healthy Mitchell would be the primary beneficiary, but even if he's less than 100 percent this weekend and able to suit up, he likely would be San Francisco's lead runner over Jordan Mason and practice-squad member Tyrion Davis-Price, if the latter is elevated. In five appearances since the team's Week 9 bye, Mitchell has averaged 4.6 yards on his 39 carries.
Jan 3, 2024
Comes down with illness
Mitchell didn't practice Wednesday due to an illness, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers already have ruled out top running back Christian McCaffrey for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Rams due to a strained right calf, which would give Mitchell an opportunity to be the team's No. 1 back under normal circumstances Week 18. But with an illness in tow, it can't be counted on. Mitchell does have two more chances this week to log on-field work, but in the meantime Jordan Mason and practice-squad member Tyrion Davis-Price represent the healthy options at the position on San Francisco's roster.
Jan 3, 2024
Could lead Week 18 ground attack
Mitchell profiles as the next man up to lead the San Francisco backfield in Sunday's game against the Rams with Christian McCaffrey (calf) having been ruled out for Week 18, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though head coach Kyle Shanahan has classified the injury McCaffrey suffered in the Week 17 win over the Commanders as a "mild" right calf strain, the 49ers won't take any chances with their star tailback in a regular-season finale that has no implications with San Francisco having already clinched a first-round bye and homefield advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. Mitchell is thus in the line to draw the Week 18 start, though given his own history of knee concerns, he may not necessarily handle the near-every-down, high-volume role that McCaffrey typically takes on. To that end, Matt Barrows of The Athletic suggests that Jordan Mason -- and perhaps even practice-squad member Tyrion Davis-Price -- could see heavy workloads Week 18, meaning that Mitchell may not represent as appealing of a DFS option as he may seem on the surface if the 49ers elect to be cautious with his usage.
Dec 31, 2023
Sees season-high usage Sunday
Mitchell racked up 17 carries for 80 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 27-10 win at Washington.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was afforded only one rush in the first half, but after Christian McCaffrey exited in the third quarter due to a calf injury, the former was the 49ers' lead runner the rest of the way. The performance marked just Mitchell's second of 2023 with double-digit carries, and he also recorded his first touchdown of the campaign on a two-yard plunge. Per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, coach Kyle Shanahan relayed after the game that McCaffrey may have a strained calf, so with San Francisco locking up the No. 1 seed in the NFC with Sunday's victory, Mitchell could be the team's top back Week 18 against the Rams.
Dec 27, 2023
Gets full listing Wednesday
Mitchell (knee) was listed as a full participant on Wednesday's practice estimate.
ANALYSIS
This backs up coach Kyle Shanahan telling Matt Barrows of The Athletic on Tuesday that Mitchell will be "full go" for Week 17. With an uncapped practice under this belt, Mitchell is poised to put an end to a three-game absence Sunday at Washington. In his nine appearances this season, he's averaged 3.4 yards on 44 carries and also gathered in four of six targets for minus-1 yard while working behind workhorse back Christian McCaffrey.
Dec 26, 2023
Likely to return Week 17
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Mitchell (knee) is expected to be "full go" in Week 17, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan didn't specifically say that Mitchell will be a full participant in practice when the 49ers open Week 17 prep Wednesday, but the running back will presumably get back to full activity no later than Friday to guarantee his availability for Sunday's game in Washington. Assuming he navigates the practice week unscathed, Mitchell should reclaim the No. 2 role behind starting running back Christian McCaffrey after Jordan Mason took on those duties each of the previous three weeks.
Dec 25, 2023
Sitting out again Monday
Mitchell (knee) is listed as inactive Monday versus the Ravens, Lindsey Pallares of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was able to muster a pair of limited practices during Week 16 prep, but it wasn't enough for him to return to action for the first time since Week 13. He'll thus cede reserve RB reps to Jordan Mason and perhaps Jeremy McNichols behind workhorse Christian McCaffrey on Monday. Mitchell's next chance to play is Sunday at Washington.
Dec 23, 2023
Questionable for Week 16
Mitchell (knee) is listed as questionable for Monday's game against the Ravens, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite not practicing Thursday or Friday, Mitchell has been given a chance to make himself available to the 49ers backfield for the first time since Week 13. Such a decision won't become known until about 90 minutes before Monday's 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff, but if Mitchell can't suit up, Jordan Mason and Jeremy McNichols will be the RB options behind top runner Christian McCaffrey.
Dec 22, 2023
Sits out Friday's practice
Mitchell (knee) didn't participate in Friday's practice, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has now missed both of the 49ers' first two Week 16 practices, putting him at risk of missing a third straight game Monday versus the Ravens. If Mitchell isn't able to play against Baltimore, Jordan Mason would remain in the No. 2 role behind lead back Christian McCaffrey.
Dec 21, 2023
Officially doesn't practice Thursday
Mitchell (knee) was a non-participant at Thursday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has been sidelined the past two games due to a knee injury, and there's no telling when he may be available to the 49ers offense again. On a positive note, he was seen working out on a side field Thursday, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, so Mitchell may be making some progress in his recovery. As a contingency plan, the team signed running back Jeremy McNichols off its practice squad, giving coach Kyle Shanahan two healthy options (also Jordan Mason) in the backfield behind workhorse Christian McCaffrey in the event Mitchell sits out Monday against the Ravens.
Dec 15, 2023
Ruled out for Week 15
Mitchell (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Arizona, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jordan Mason will replace Mitchell as Christian McCaffrey's backup for a second straight game. It's a role that comes with minimal playing time apart from blowout situations, though Mason did score a three-yard TD against the Seahawks last week after McCaffrey ripped off a 72-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and needed a breather. Mason played just five snaps thereafter and finished with five touches for 26 yards and the touchdown.
Dec 14, 2023
Officially DNP Thursday
Mitchell (knee) did not practice Thursday, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a downgrade for Mitchell after he was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday's practice report. Mitchell looks to be on the wrong side of questionable for this week's date with the Cardinals. Jordan Mason filled in as Christian McCaffrey's direct backup last week against Seattle.
Dec 14, 2023
Not participating Thursday
Mitchell (knee) was not participating in the media portion of Thursday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was estimated as limited Wednesday, so a DNP would be an obvious downgrade. The third-year back missed last week's win over the Seahawks and has missed a total of four games to various injuries this season. Mitchell is averaging just 4.9 carries per game when healthy.
Dec 13, 2023
To be limited Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Mitchell (knee) will be limited at practice Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
This follows comments from Shanahan on Monday that Mitchell has a chance to return from a one-game absence this Sunday at Arizona, according to Josh Dubow of The Associated Press. Jordan Mason got the RB reps that didn't go to Christian McCaffrey this past Sunday against the Seahawks, taking four carries for 20 yards and one touchdown and hauling in his only target for six yards. If Mitchell makes enough progress to suit up for Week 15, he likely will push Mason back down the depth chart.
Dec 11, 2023
May return in Week 15
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Mitchell (knee) has a chance to play Sunday at Arizona, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell is no stranger to knee injuries in his three-year career, and he again missed another contest Sunday against the Seahawks. After failing to practice at all last week, he'll need to mix into drills in some capacity once the 49ers resume practicing later this week to have a chance to return to the lineup. Mitchell is averaging just 5.3 touches per game this season operating behind workhorse running back Christian McCaffrey, giving him little utility in the fantasy realm.
Dec 10, 2023
Officially inactive Sunday
Mitchell (knee) is inactive for Sunday's Week 14 clash with Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell's inactive status doesn't come as a surprise, as he didn't practice at all during Week 14 prep and entered the weekend listed as doubtful. The third-year running back has now missed four games this season, though the first three all came within the first five weeks of the campaign. With Mitchell out, Jordan Mason will ascend to the role of San Francisco's No. 2 back behind Christian McCaffrey.
Dec 8, 2023
Doubtful after missed practices
Mitchell (knee) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against Seattle, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell didn't practice this week, setting up Jordan Mason for the backup role behind lead back Christian McCaffrey. It's a job that doesn't come with many snaps or touches outside of blowout scenarios, with Mitchell averaging 5.5 carries for 24.8 yards in four games (all wins) since the 49ers' Week 9 bye.
Dec 7, 2023
No practice Thursday
Mitchell (knee) didn't practice Thursday, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, Mitchell was seen working out on the side during the portion of Thursday's session open to media. However, Mitchell received the same listing as he did one day earlier, giving him only one more opportunity to mix into practice this week. Friday's injury could be telling for his potential to suit up Sunday against the Seahawks.
Dec 6, 2023
Tending to knee issue
Mitchell won't take part in Wednesday's practice due to a knee injury, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has routinely missed time due to knee issues in his two-plus years as a pro, but he's been able to string together seven consecutive appearances dating back to Week 6. Overall, he's totaled 28 carries and one catch (on two targets) during that span as Christian McCaffrey continues to handle the bulk of the reps afforded the 49ers backfield. As a result, even if he's able to suit up Sunday against the Seahawks, Mitchell likely won't contribute much in the box score.
Dec 4, 2023
Just three carries behind CMC
Mitchell rushed three times for 13 yards and was not targeted in the passing game in Sunday's 42-19 rout of the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell experienced a dip in usage Sunday with Christian McCaffrey (17-93-1) and the rest of San Francisco's talented starting lineup handling business against Philadelphia. The three carries were Mitchell's lowest since Week 8 against Cincinnati. The 25-year-old has been running the ball well of late, maintaining a per-carry average above four yards for the third consecutive week. Mitchell should receive a handful of carries spelling CMC against Seattle next Sunday.
Nov 24, 2023
Strings together two solid games
Mitchell carried the ball seven times for 39 yards and caught his lone target for a loss of three yards in Thursday's 31-13 win over the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell didn't post a notable fantasy line per se, but this was the second game in a row where the backup looked like his old self with the ball in his hands. The oft-injured back logged 17 snaps on offense (26 percent) while Christian McCaffrey went off for 100-plus rushing yards and a pair of scores Thursday. The 49ers will presumably lean on CMC as much as possible in Week 13 for a benchmark game against Philadelphia on Dec. 3. The 49ers' schedule softens up considerably after that, which could open up opportunities for Mitchell to get some extra run and become a potential deep-league option down the stretch.
Nov 20, 2023
Logs eight snaps on offense Sunday
Mitchell had four carries for 24 yards and was not targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 27-14 win over the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell spelled starter Christian McCaffrey for eight offensive snaps Sunday, which is right around what the backup has been receiving through seven appearances this season. The 25-year-old managed to average more than four yards per tote for the first time in 2023, but his season average still sits at an unsavory mark of 2.9 yards. Mitchell simply isn't receiving enough touches to offset his regression as a runner this season, leaving the backup with little to no fantasy value for Thursday's tilt against the Seahawks.
Nov 13, 2023
Logs eight carries over 17 snaps
Mitchell rushed eight times for 23 yards and was not targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 34-3 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell maintained a small role on offense even with star wideout and pseudo-RB2 Deebo Samuel (shoulder) returning to the lineup Sunday. It is worth noting that seven of Mitchell's eight carries came in garbage time with the 49ers leading by more than four touchdowns. Had the game been closer, the 49ers' official No. 2 back would likely have been limited to the one carry he received in the second quarter of the lopsided victory. Mitchell will find it tough to generate fantasy value in such a limited role on offense against Tampa Bay next Sunday.
Oct 30, 2023
Gets 12 percent of snaps
Mitchell had three carries for two yards and failed to bring in his lone target in Sunday's 31-17 loss to the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was the only San Francisco backup to receive carries for the second straight week. The 25-year-old wound up logging seven snaps on offense, but he barely made an impact in the box score Sunday. Mitchell's inconsistent play combined with a smaller role on offense this year should keep him out of fantasy lineups when San Francisco returns from its bye to face the Jaguars on Nov. 12.
Oct 24, 2023
Only backup with touches Monday
Mitchell lost one yard on his only carry in Monday's 22-17 loss to the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Starting tailback Christian McCaffrey (oblique) did not leave the field in Monday's loss despite playing at less than 100 percent. Mitchell was still able to get on the field via two-back sets for four offensive snaps (eight percent). The 25-year-old wound up being the only other backup to touch the ball against Minnesota despite losing favor to the hotter Jordan Mason in recent weeks. Mitchell appears to still be No. 2 on depth chart heading into next Sunday's game against Cincinnati despite struggling with his production (2.5 YPC) when he has been healthy enough to play this season.
Oct 15, 2023
Outplayed by Mason after CMC hurt
Mitchell (knee) rushed twice for minus-3 yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 19-17 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell played a minimal role in his return from a two-game absence. Lead back Christian McCaffrey (oblique) exited in the second half, but Jordan Mason (five carries for 27 yards and a touchdown) took over as San Francisco's top backfield option over Mitchell. If McCaffrey's unable to return for a MNF road game against the Vikings in Week 7, Mitchell could take on a larger role, though he seems to have fallen behind Mason on the depth chart.
Oct 15, 2023
Returning to action Sunday
Mitchell (knee) is listed as active Sunday at Cleveland, Lindsey Pallares of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has been plagued by knee injuries during his two-plus seasons as a pro, but the current issue will force him to miss only two games. Now that he's available to San Francisco's offense, he should get any of the RB reps that don't go to Christian McCaffrey. On the campaign, Mitchell has averaged 3.3 yards on his 16 carries and also gathered in three of four targets for two yards.
Oct 13, 2023
Questionable for Sunday
Mitchell (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in Cleveland, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A return to practice Thursday gives Mitchell at least some chance to avoid a third straight absence due to a knee injury suffered during practice. Jordan Mason has been filling in as the No. 2 RB behind Christian McCaffrey, with the role mostly consisting of garbage-time carries.
Oct 12, 2023
Limited in return to practice
Mitchell (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
A knee injury sidelined Mitchell from every practice since the Thursday of Week 4 prep and also the 49ers' past two contests, but with his return to drills this Thursday, he seemingly is drawing closer to game action. Friday's session and subsequent practice report may be telling for his chances to suit up Sunday at Cleveland. If Mitchell is unable to, Jordan Mason will continue to get any RB reps that don't go to top option Christian McCaffrey.
Oct 12, 2023
Practicing Thursday
Mitchell (knee) returned to practice Thursday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
This marks Mitchell's first visible on-field work since the Thursday before a Week 4 matchup with the Cardinals. A knee injury has conspired to sidelined him for the last two games, but by mixing into drills in the middle of Week 6 prep, he's giving himself a chance to be available Sunday at Cleveland. First, though, Mitchell's activity level this Thursday will become known once the 49ers release their practice report.
Oct 11, 2023
Still not practicing
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Mitchell (knee) won't practice Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has missed the last two games due to a knee injury, and his inability to practice to kick off Week 6 prep could mean another absence is on the horizon. As long as Mitchell is sidelined, Jordan Mason will be the running back to scoop up any touches that don't go to the 49ers' No. 1 option Christian McCaffrey.
Oct 6, 2023
Won't play Sunday night
Mitchell (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday night's game against Dallas, Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee reports.
ANALYSIS
Christian McCaffrey figures to dominate backfield snaps in any case, given that Sunday's game could end up making the difference between a bye week and a wild-card game in January. Mitchell had 19 touches over the first three weeks of the season before the knee injury sidelined him, but even that limited workload largely was earned in the late stages of blowouts. Most of the fantasy appeal at this point is based on what Mitchell might do in the event of a McCaffrey injury, rather than any hope of the San Francisco backfield supporting two fantasy starters at the same time (something that looked possible at one point last winter).
Oct 5, 2023
Remains sidelined Thursday
Mitchell (knee) remained sidelined for Thursday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell missed the 49ers' Week 4 contest against the Cardinals and appears to be trending in the wrong direction for Sunday night's game against the Cowboys. Jordan Mason played 15 percent of the offensive snaps behind Christian McCaffrey last Sunday and would be in line for RB2 duties once again if Mitchell can't play.

Not practicing
Mitchell (knee) isn't practicing Wednesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell barely played the first two weeks of the season and then suffered a knee injury when he got 13 touches in a 30-13 win over the Giants in Week 3. He missed the Week 4 win over Arizona and now appears in danger of missing Week 5 against Dallas, though a report earlier this week suggested the Niners consider him day-to-day. In any case, Christian McCaffrey doesn't figure to come off the field much Sunday night in a battle between NFC heavyweights,
Oct 2, 2023
Day-to-day
Mitchell (knee) is viewed as day-to-day as Sunday night's game against the Cowboys approaches, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell sat out the 49ers' Week 4 win over the Cardinals after being added to the team's injury report this past Friday, but it appears as though he has a chance to return action this weekend. In his absence versus Arizona, Jordan Mason logged three carries for 10 yards while working behind starting RB Christian McCaffrey.
Oct 1, 2023
Takes seat Sunday
Mitchell (knee) is listed as inactive Sunday versus the Cardinals, Lindsey Pallares of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was a late addition to the 49ers' Week 4 injury report after he was tripped up during Thursday's practice, as coach Kyle Shanahan told Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com on Friday. The resulting knee injury is concerning considering Mitchell sustained MCL sprains to both of his knees last season, which allowed for only five regular-season appearances. The severity of the current issue isn't known, but Mitchell will yield the No. 2 RB gig behind Christian McCaffrey in San Francisco to Jordan Mason for at least one contest.
Oct 1, 2023
Not expected to play Sunday
Mitchell (knee) isn't expected to play Sunday against the Cardinals, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was deemed questionable for Sunday's 4:25 ET contest after being listed as a non-participant in Friday's practice due to a knee injury. In the event that he is indeed inactive, Jordan Mason would presumably be next up for complementary work behind top back Christian McCaffrey, with Tyrion Davis-Price on hand in reserve.
Sep 29, 2023
Gets questionable tag for Sunday
Mitchell is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals after he was a non-participant in Friday's practice due to a knee injury.
ANALYSIS
A Week 4 home matchup with a Cardinals squad that's a two-touchdown underdog profiles as a prime opportunity for Mitchell to take on added work behind lead back Christian McCaffrey, but the knee injury now threatens Mitchell's availability for the matchup between NFC West rivals. Though Mitchell was first added to the injury report Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan told Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com that the running back actually sustained the injury in Thursday's session after getting tripped up. If Mitchell ends up being inactive ahead of Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff, Jordan Mason would be the next man up for work behind McCaffrey. Tyrion Davis-Price, meanwhile, would be active for the first time this season as the 49ers' No. 3 back.
Sep 22, 2023
Season-high workload in win
Mitchell rushed 11 times for 42 yards and secured all three targets for two yards in the 49ers' 30-12 win over the Giants on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell went from not seeing any snaps in Week 2 against the Rams to more than doubling his Week 1 workload in extended action. The third-year back was able to give Christian McCaffrey some time off the field thanks in part to San Francisco's fourth-quarter lead, but Mitchell's week-to-week production will be hard to trust given head coach Kyle Shanahan has proven willing to entrust McCaffrey with a hefty workload in more competitive scenarios than Thursday's.
Sep 18, 2023
No snaps for backup RBs
Mitchell did not see the field in Sunday's 30-23 win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell's lack of playing time wasn't due to a role reduction, rather a lack of need after starter Christian McCaffrey stayed on the field for every offensive snap Sunday. The only other San Francisco running back used was Jordan Mason, who logged 17 snaps in his usual role on special teams. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has been leaning on McCaffrey heavily early on, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Mitchell get involved as the season progresses in order to keep the starter fresh.
Sep 11, 2023
Used sparingly Sunday
Mitchell rushed five times for 10 yards and failed to bring in his lone target in Sunday's 30-7 win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
The Steelers were unable to stop Christian McCaffrey (22-152-1) on the ground, which left little work for Mitchell and the rest of the 49ers' backups Sunday. The 25-year-old was on the field for 15 percent of the offense's plays, and he likely won't crack the 25 percent mark so long as CMC stays healthy this season. Mitchell has proven that he can do a lot with a little (6.2 YPC in 2022), so those in deeper formats shouldn't cut ties with the power runner after a quiet Week 1.
Aug 21, 2023
Back at practice
Mitchell, who had been dealing with an adductor strain, returned to practice Monday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Mitchell was back in pads Monday, it's unclear if he'll suit up for Friday's preseason finale against the Chargers. In the absence of any injury setbacks, the 2021 sixth-rounder is slated to open the season in a complementary role working as star RB Christian McCaffrey's top backup.
Aug 20, 2023
Expected to return to practice
San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said Sunday that Mitchell (hip) is expected to return to practice at some point this coming week, Lindsey Pallares of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has been sitting out since Aug. 3 while dealing with an adductor strain. The 25-year-old has been hampered by injuries throughout much of his young career, and he was limited to just five games last season. He's still totaled 252 carries for 1,242 rushing yards (4.9 ypc) across 16 career games, and, when healthy, he should fill a significant role behind starting running back Christian McCaffrey.
Aug 3, 2023
Out with abductor strain
Mitchell suffered an abductor strain and is expected to be out for about a week, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell had enjoyed a healthy spring and summer up until Wednesday/Thursday, after missing more regular-season games (18) than he played (16) through his first two professional seasons. The estimate coach Kyle Shanahan provided Thursday suggests Mitchell should resume practicing long before Week 1, with Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price candidates to see more work with the first- and second-team offenses in the meantime.
May 25, 2023
Healthy to start OTAs
Mitchell was spotted getting reps in with the first team during the 49ers' first open practice of OTAs, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell dealt with injuries to both of his knees in addition to a late-season groin injury in 2022, so it was a positive sign to see him take part in the early stages of OTAs. The 25-year-old was still productive last season despite being limited physically, averaging 6.2 yards per carry while spelling starter Christian McCaffrey. With both backs looking healthy early in camp, San Francisco should begin the 2023 campaign with one of the top rushing duos in the league, assuming Mitchell can stay on the field.
Feb 5, 2023
Injury-riddled 2022 campaign
Mitchell (groin) finished the regular season with 45 rushing attempts for 279 yards and two touchdowns across five healthy games.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell suffered injuries to both of his knees at different points of the season, resulting in a loss of 12 games in addition to his starting role. The 24-year-old remained productive backing up Christian McCaffrey with a healthy 6.2 yards per-carry average when healthy. Mitchell did suffer a groin injury during the 49ers' playoff run, but it was considered minor at the time. The standout 2021 sixth-round pick remains under contract for the 2023 campaign, putting him in position to spell McCaffrey if health permits.
Jan 29, 2023
Inactive Sunday
Mitchell (groin) is inactive for Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell approached the game listed as questionable after not practicing this past week, and he'll be unavailable Sunday, which sets the stage for Jordan Mason and Tevin Coleman to log complementary snaps behind top running back Christian McCaffrey, with the versatile Deebo Samuel also mixing in. If the 49ers defeat the Eagles, Mitchell's next chance to see game action will arrive Feb. 12 in the Super Bowl.
Jan 27, 2023
Status in question for Sunday
Mitchell (groin) is listed as questionable for Sunday's NFC Championship Game in Philadelphia, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Mitchell and Christian McCaffrey (calf) were held out of drills Wednesday and Thursday, but only McCaffrey showed enough Friday to be cleared ahead of Sunday's contest. Coach Kyle Shanahan told Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News that Mitchell did take part in Friday's walkthrough and also individual drills, but the 49ers aren't yet ready to afford him the same luxury as McCaffrey. Mitchell's status thus won't be known until 90 minutes before Sunday's 3:00 p.m. ET kickoff. If Mitchell is limited or sidelined, Deebo Samuel (ankle), Jordan Mason, Tyrion Davis-Price and practice-squad member Tevin Coleman are the candidates to get reps at running back behind McCaffrey.
Jan 27, 2023
Not on field Friday
Mitchell (groin) wasn't spotted during the media-access portion of Friday's practice, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
If Mitchell eventually goes down as a non-participant for a third straight session, it'll be interesting to see how the 49ers list him ahead of Sunday's NFC Championship Game in Philadelphia. On a positive note for San Francisco, though, Christian McCaffrey (calf) was taking part in drills Friday, one day removed from telling Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area that there's "zero" chance he doesn't play this weekend. Assuming McCaffrey eventually is cleared for the contest and some or all of Mitchell's reps are available, Deebo Samuel (ankle), Jordan Mason, Tyrion Davis-Price and practice-squad member Tevin Coleman are the candidates to mix in at running back behind McCaffrey.
Jan 26, 2023
Won't practice Thursday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Mitchell (groin) won't take part in Thursday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Mitchell and starting running back Christian McCaffrey (calf) have yet to log any on-field work this week, while Deebo Samuel (ankle) so far has managed limited sessions. According to Shanahan, there's an expectation that all three backfield options will be able to suit up for Sunday's NFC Championship Game in Philadelphia, but the entire situation should continue to be monitored to get a sense of who may get the larger share of the snaps at running back this weekend.
Jan 25, 2023
Sits out Wednesday's practice
Mitchell (groin) won't practice Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell, Christian McCaffrey (calf) and Deebo Samuel (ankle) are all sitting out Wednesday's practice to nurse injuries, but head coach Kyle Shanahan expects the trio of playmakers to be available for Sunday's NFC Championship Game, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Mitchell and McCaffrey played through their respective injuries during the 49ers' divisional-round win over the Cowboys and were labeled as day-to-day by Shanahan on Monday, so it appears San Francisco is simply being cautious. Following Wednesday's session, the 49ers will have two more practices before they need give Mitchell an official designation for the upcoming playoff matchup.
Jan 23, 2023
Day-to-day with groin injury
Mitchell (groin) is considered day-to-day, but coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that he expects Mitchell to play in Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Eagles, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell is in the same boat as Christian McCaffrey (calf), though this is the first we are hearing of Mitchell's injury. McCaffrey out-touched Mitchell 16-14 in the 19-12 win over the Cowboys in the divisional round, and both running backs should play sizable roles in the NFC Championship Game, even if their practice reps are limited in the week leading up to the game.
Jan 23, 2023
Leads rushing attack in win
Mitchell rushed 14 times for 51 yards in Sunday's 19-12 playoff win over the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell wasn't targeted in the passing game after cashing in a short receiving touchdown in the wild-card round win over Seattle. Starter Christian McCaffrey gained 57 yards on 16 touches as neither back was able to find much running room against Dallas' athletic front. Mitchell should continue to split rushing duties with CMC, but the latter possesses the greater fantasy upside in next Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Eagles.
Jan 8, 2023
Returns with two scores
Mitchell (knee) suited up and logged five carries for 55 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 38-13 win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was activated from injured reserve for the second time this season, producing big fantasy numbers on just five touches while backing up Christian McCaffrey (13 touches). Both running backs have dealt with lower body injuries this year, which helps explains the low usage one week ahead of the playoffs. The 24-year-old finishes the regular season with a rushing line of 45-279-2 across five active games. Assuming Mitchell remains in good health, he should inch closer to double-digit carries when San Francisco hosts its upcoming wild-card game next week.
Jan 7, 2023
Ready to play Week 18
Mitchell (knee) was activated off injured reserve Saturday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
It'll be interesting to see how the 49ers use Mitchell, especially considering the team has a chance to claim the No. 2 seed in the NFC. Expect Mitchell to get a healthy dose of touches, particularly in the second half, as the 49ers continue to limit the usage of their dynamic starter, Christian McCaffrey, who didn't practice both Wednesday and Thursday for precautionary reasons.
Jan 5, 2023
Likely to return Sunday
Coach Kyle Shanahan told Adam Copeland of KNBR on Thursday that he expects Mitchell (knee) to be available for Sunday's game versus the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
While Mitchell returned to practice Wednesday, the 49ers didn't officially designate him for return from injured reserve until Thursday, per the NFL's transaction log. The move opened up a 21-day window for the 49ers to activate Mitchell from IR, but he seemingly won't need that much time for the team to do so. As for the rest of the backfield, Christian McCaffrey (ankle/knee) hasn't practiced this week, but he revealed to David Lombardi of The Athletic on Thursday that his DNPs were a precaution, and he should be active this weekend. If both McCaffrey and Mitchell are able to suit up, it'll mark their fourth contest working together since the former arrived from Carolina in October. In the first three, Mitchell recorded 41 touches to McCaffrey's 47 in Weeks 10-12, so there is room for both to produce.
Jan 2, 2023
Return to practice likely this week
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Mitchell (knee) is slated to practice this week, which would open a 21-day window for the 49ers to activate him from injured reserve, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell is dealing with his second MCL sprain of the season, which has sidelined him since Week 12. He suffered the injury Nov. 27 and was given an accompanying recovery timeline of 6-to-8 weeks. So far, five weeks have passed, so the 49ers will start to ramp up Mitchell's on-field work in the coming days. It's unclear if he has a chance to be active Sunday against the Cardinals, but he'll at least take the first step toward a return to San Francisco's active roster.
Dec 30, 2022
Practice window not open yet
Coach Kyle Shanahan relayed Mitchell (knee) didn't practice Friday due to an illness, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan hinted Monday that a return to practice for Mitchell was possible before week's end, which would have opened his 21-day window to return from injured reserve. Instead, Mitchell has caught the bug that's impacted a few 49ers this week, thus delaying his first on-field work since spraining his MCL on Nov. 27. Assuming he's designated for return from IR next week, he'll have a chance to play Week 18 against the Cardinals, but more realistically the team is aiming to have him available for the postseason as a backfield option behind Christian McCaffrey.
Dec 26, 2022
Progressing in recovery
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Mitchell (knee) has made "real good progress," and the running back's 21-day window to return from injured reserve may open as early as Friday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After picking up a sprained MCL in his left knee on Nov. 27, Mitchell was given a recovery timeline of 6-to-8 weeks. As of Monday, he's entered the fifth week of his rehab from the injury, but there have been signals from Shanahan that Mitchell is in a good spot in that regard, per David Lombardi of The Athletic. Even if the 49ers designate Mitchell from return Friday, he's unlikely to be activated from IR ahead of Sunday's game in Las Vegas. More realistically, the team is aiming for him to get back on the active roster for a Week 18 matchup with the Cardinals.
Dec 23, 2022
On track in recovery
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Mitchell (knee) is on track with his recovery from an MCL sprain, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Lombardi also added that Mitchell is expected to occupy the 49ers' final IR spot (with a designation to return) following Javon Kinlaw's (knee) recent activation from injured reserve. The 24-year-old's initial timetable was expected to be 6-8 weeks, so he is still likely to miss the rest of the regular season, but a return for the start of San Francisco's playoff run seems possible. Mitchell was performing well in a complementary role behind Christian McCaffrey before getting hurt, so expect him to reclaim that role when he is healthy enough to return.
Dec 3, 2022
Shifts over to IR
Mitchell (knee) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It's important to note that Mitchell could, and likely will, return during the 49ers' posteason run, but this designation confirms the second-year back will be done for the rest of the regular season. The 49ers did not choose to call up Tevin Coleman from the practice squad meaning Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price will be left to backup star running back Christian McCaffrey.
Nov 28, 2022
Expected to miss 6-8 weeks
Coach Kyle Shanahan noted Monday that Mitchell (knee) is in line to be out 6-to-8 weeks, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com, the 49ers plan to place Mitchell on IR, which would ensure that he misses at least four games, but based on the estimated timetable put forth by Shanahan, the running back doesn't seem likely to be back before the postseason. In Mitchell's looming absence, Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price are now in line to log change-of-pace/complementary snaps for the 49ers behind top back Christian McCaffrey, while Tevin Coleman is a candidate to be elevated from the team's practice squad.
Nov 27, 2022
Likely sprained other MCL
Mitchell (knee) likely sprained his MCL in Sunday's win over the Saints, but the injury isn't to the same knee as his Week 1 MCL sprain, per coach Kyle Shanahan, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell sat out Weeks 2-8 due to the first MCL sprain, which suggests he could be facing another multi-week absence, though the 49ers will do more testing before releasing a return timetable. Christian McCaffrey will lead the 49ers' backfield in Mitchell's absence, with Jordan Mason and possibly fellow rookie Tyrion Davis-Price on hand as well.
Nov 27, 2022
Dealing with knee issue
Mitchell was forced out of Sunday's game against the Saints due to a knee injury.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell dealt with knee irritation during the stretch run of last season and also sat out Weeks 2-8 of this year due to an MCL sprain in his right knee. The current concern may keep him sidelined for the rest of Week 12, which would cap him at seven carries for 35 yards and two catches (on two targets) for eight yards. Jordan Mason will move up to No. 2 on the RB depth chart for the 49ers behind Christian McCaffrey for as long as Mitchell is sidelined.
Nov 22, 2022
Leads 49ers in rushing
Mitchell rushed the ball nine times for 59 yards in Monday's 38-10 win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell led the team in both rush attempts and yards while averaging an efficient 6.6 yards per attempt. All of those marks are deceiving however, as Mitchell had only one carry at halftime and saw the majority of his work when the game was a blowout and the outcome hardly in question. He remains the handcuff to Christian McCaffrey, but Mitchell's volume on a weekly basis will be hard to rely upon.
Nov 14, 2022
Game-high 89 yards in return
Mitchell (knee) rushed 18 times for 89 yards and lost one yard on his lone reception (two targets) in Sunday's 22-16 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell returned to action after going down with a knee injury on the first game of the regular season. The 24-year-old looked to be in midseason form despite the lengthy layoff, as he paced the team in carries (18) and rushing yards (89) fresh off of injured reserve. Christian McCaffrey (18 touches for 77 yards and a score) still did his thing as the running backs nearly split touches. CMC figures to be the featured back -- in addition to handling most receiving work -- but the 49ers' former starter could carve out value if he continues to see double-digit touches. Make sure Mitchell is rostered ahead of next Monday's tilt against the Cardinals.
Nov 12, 2022
Activated, ready to play
Mitchell (knee) was activated off injured reserve Saturday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed this move would take place locking in the talented second-year back as the backup to Christian McCaffrey. It'll be interesting to see how the 49ers use Mitchell alongside their new Panthers import as it's possible the duo could both see a plethora of carries with McCaffrey taking every opportunity on passing downs.
Nov 11, 2022
Returning for SNF
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Mitchell (knee) will be activated from injured reserve before Sunday's game against the Chargers, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers may wait until Saturday to make their transactions official, bringing Mitchell and three others off IR. There was a time not so long ago when his return would've been a leading fantasy headline for the week, but Mitchell likely is looking at a small-ish role now that the 49ers have Christian McCaffrey. If nothing else, Mitchell is worth keeping on fantasy benches for what he might do in the event of a McCaffrey absence later this season.
Nov 7, 2022
Designated to return from IR
The 49ers designated Mitchell (knee) to return from IR on Monday, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell sprained his MCL during the season opener and has been on IR since. Jeff Wilson replaced him at first, but the 49ers have since traded Wilson to the Dolphins after acquiring Christian McCaffrey from the Panthers. With the move, Mitchell will return to practices ahead of Week 10, and San Francisco opened a 21-day window for the running back to be added to the active roster. However, it doesn't sound like Mitchell will remain sidelined for much longer, as Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports reported last week that Mitchell has been eyeing a return to action against the Chargers in Week 10. Regardless, when Mitchell eventually returns, it's possible he'll be limited at first, and even when he's back to full speed, he'll operate as the No. 2 back behind McCaffrey.
Nov 1, 2022
Aiming to play in Week 10
Mitchell (knee) is seeking to return to action Sunday, Nov. 13 against the Chargers, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has been sidelined since spraining the MCL in his right knee in the season opener. Since then, the 49ers rode Jeff Wilson in the backfield until the recent acquisition of Christian McCaffrey. After two games with McCaffrey on the roster and Mitchell getting healthier by the week, the team opted to deal Wilson to the Dolphins on Tuesday, paving the way for Mitchell to be the No. 2 running back, when healthy. Mitchell will have the benefit of a Week 9 bye to do so, but San Francisco also needs to make the procedural move of designating him for return from IR in order to reintegrate him into practice. How he fares on the field next week will determine whether or not he joins McCaffrey as an RB option for coach Kyle Shanahan in Week 10.
Oct 28, 2022
Could return after Week 9 bye
Mitchell (knee) could be a candidate to return from injured reserve after the 49ers' Week 9 bye, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell is eligible to come off IR at any point, but a potential target date may be difficult to pinpoint until the 49ers clear him to resume practicing. The running back looks as though he may be close to doing that, as Barrows notes that Mitchell spotted running and working out off to the side during Friday's practice. Even if Mitchell makes it back for San Francisco's first post-bye game Week 10 versus the Chargers on Nov. 13, he'll likely be headed for a complementary role out of the backfield after serving as the 49ers' lead back prior to suffering an MCL sprain of his right knee back in Week 1. The 49ers acquired 2019 first-team All-Pro Christian McCaffrey last week, and he'll likely end up seeing the overwhelming majority of the backfield snaps and touches while he's healthy.
Sep 13, 2022
Officially moved to IR
The 49ers placed Mitchell (knee) on injured reserve Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The transaction was fully expected after Mitchell was diagnosed with a MCL sprain in his right knee following his departure from Sunday's rain-soaked season-opening loss to the Bears. Though Mitchell is expected to avoid surgery to address the injury, he's likely to need approximately two months to recover from the sprained knee. Mitchell's absence for the next several weeks should pave the way for rookie third-round selection Tyrion Davis-Price, who was inactive Week 1, to dress on game days, but he still may find himself behind veteran Jeff Wilson and undrafted rookie Jordan Mason in the 49ers' backfield pecking order.
Sep 12, 2022
Set to miss about eight weeks
Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Monday that Mitchell will miss about eight weeks with an MCL sprain that he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Bears, Matt Barrows of The Athletic
ANALYSIS
Per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, Mitchell won't need surgery, but an IR stint is looming for the running back. In Mitchell's absence, Jeff Wilson is next up for the 49ers' RB touches, while Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price are also candidates to see added work in the team's backfield, while the versatile Deebo Samuel remains in the mix to continue to log rushing attempts.
Sep 12, 2022
Out two months with MCL sprain
Mitchell is expected to be sidelined for about two months after suffering a sprained MCL in Sunday's season opener against the Bears, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
We'll await official confirmation from the 49ers, but based on that estimate, Mitchell is a candidate to go on IR, which would ensure that he misses at least four games. In that scenario, Jeff Wilson, Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price would be next up for added RB touches in the team's backfield, with the versatile Deebo Samuel also in the mix to log rushing attempts.
Sep 12, 2022
Could miss multiple weeks
Mitchell (knee) underwent an MRI on Monday and is expected to miss time, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers will have a clearer picture of Mitchell's recovery timetable once the MRI results reveal the full extent of his right knee injury. The second-year running back was ruled out of Sunday's loss to the Bears after San Francisco's fourth possession, and he was spotted after the contest wearing a brace. An extended absence on Mitchell's behalf would likely propel Jeff Wilson into the No. 1 running back spot, and likewise mean increased work for rookies Jordan Mason (zero touches Week 1) and Tyrion Davis-Price (inactive Week 1). Deebo Samuel could also factor in for more backfield action.
Sep 11, 2022
Seen with brace on right leg
Mitchell was spotted leaving the locker room with a large brace on his right leg after Sunday's 19-10 loss at Chicago, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was abruptly ruled out after the 49ers' fourth possession of the game with a knee injury. There was no context before or after his departure, and while he was walking slowly without bending his right leg on his way to the team bus, he was doing so without crutches. Coach Kyle Shanahan likely will touch on Mitchell's health in the next day or two, but if the running back misses any time, it may again be the Deebo Samuel show out of San Francisco's backfield for the foreseeable future. Samuel ended up with eight carries for 52 yards and one TD in Week 1 (along with two catches for 14 yards on eight targets), while Jeff Wilson had nine rushes for 22 yards and two receptions for eight yards. Meanwhile, undrafted rookie Jordan Mason didn't have a touch, and 2022 third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price was inactive.
Sep 11, 2022
Leaves with knee injury Sunday
Mitchell won't return to Sunday's game at Chicago due to a knee injury, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell may have been the victim of terrible field conditions on a soggy Soldier Field, but the second-year pro will finish Week 1 with six carries for 41 yards. With rookie third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price a healthy scratch Sunday, the 49ers' healthy options at running back are Jeff Wilson and Jordan Mason.
Sep 7, 2022
Sidesteps injury report
Mitchell (hamstring) wasn't listed on the 49ers' injury report Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers kept Mitchell on the sideline during the preseason due to a hamstring concern, but he now has more than a week of on-field work behind him and was without limitations in the first official practice ahead of the season opener. With his health not in question, the second-year pro can assume leadership of the team's backfield, which equated to 94.7 yards from scrimmage per game and seven total TDs in 14 appearances (including playoffs) last year.
Aug 28, 2022
Back on practice field
Mitchell (hamstring) returned to practice Sunday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear how much work Mitchell may be able to handle in individual and team work, but he was spotted going through agility drills in the portion of the session open to the media. He didn't play at all this preseason as he tended to a hamstring issue that has kept him sidelined from practice since at least Aug. 10, but he now appears to be ramping up his activity with an aim to be available for a Week 1 road matchup with the Bears on Sept. 11 against the Bears. Once healthy, Mitchell will serve as the 49ers' unquestioned No. 1 running back.
Aug 25, 2022
Expected back for Week 1
The 49ers expect Mitchell (hamstring) to return in time for Week 1 at Chicago, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell hasn't practiced since at least Aug. 10 and won't play in any preseason games. His spot atop the depth chart isn't in question, but there is doubt about his ability to stay healthy after he suffered a handful of different injuries last last year, missing six games and then having minor knee surgery in the offseason. Mitchell was healthy for the start of training camp and practiced for about two weeks before the hamstring injury popped up. If he doesn't make it back for the opener, Jeff Wilson would be the favorite to fill in as San Francisco's top running back.
Aug 13, 2022
Not playing preseason Week 2
Mitchell (hamstring) isn't expected to play in the 49ers' second preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20 at Minnesota, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kyle Shanahan relayed the news after Friday's exhibition win against the Packers, noting the 49ers then will make a decision regarding Mitchell for preseason Week 3 (Thursday, Aug. 25 in Houston). Shanahan's statement seems to contradict a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN earlier Friday that Mitchell likely would miss the entire preseason. With a new starting quarterback in Trey Lance in San Francisco, the team seems likely to have a dress rehearsal of sorts with most of the first-team offense working together, so perhaps Mitchell, Deebo Samuel and company will see game action before Week 1.
Jul 29, 2022
Healthy to open training camp
Mitchell (knee) worked with the first-team offense at San Francisco's first practice of training camp, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell underwent a cleanup procedure in his knee after his rookie season, but it's safe to say he's back to full health, as the 49ers would have no reason to rush his return at this stage of the offseason. Per Dieter Kurtenbach of The Mercury News, Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon and rookie Tyrion Davis-Price all looked impressive as well, but a healthy Mitchell should open the season as the clear top option in San Francisco's deep backfield.
Apr 25, 2022
Opts for offseason knee procedure
Mitchell said Monday that he underwent a cleanup procedure on his knee following his rookie season, but he expects to be 100 percent in advance of training camp, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was a fixture on the 49ers' injury reports throughout the 2021 campaign, with a combination of the knee, shoulder and rib injuries as well as a concussion keeping him sidelined for six of San Francisco's 20 contests, including the postseason. The knee issue first popped up in early December, but Mitchell continued to fill a lead role out of the 49ers backfield when he was available for the final five games, as he amassed 373 rushing yards, 68 receiving yards and two scores over those contests. His efficiency took a big hit, however, as he averaged 4.6 yards per carry through his first nine contests, compared to only 3.8 yards per carry in his final five appearances. Mitchell is hopeful that the knee procedure along with adding some extra bulk -- he plans to play at around 215 pounds in 2022 after hovering around 212 as a rookie -- will allow him to recapture the success he enjoyed during the early portion of 2021.
Jan 30, 2022
Gains 70 total yards in loss
Mitchell rushed 11 times for 20 yards and caught all three targets for 50 yards in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell didn't get much help from the usually-creative run designer, Kyle Shanahan, in this one. A good portion of the 23-year-old's carries were inside zone runs out of shotgun formations directly into the human wall that is known better as Aaron Donald. Mitchell was able to break free on a huge catch and run in an eventual loss, putting an end to an impressive rookie campaign (1,100 combined yards and six touchdowns over 11 regular-season games). It is unclear what the 49ers' backfield will look like in 2022, but Mitchell clearly established himself as the team's best back, making him a strong fantasy asset heading into next season's drafts.
Jan 28, 2022
Ready for Sunday
Mitchell (knee) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's NFC Championship Game at the Rams, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell endured a cap on his on-field reps this week, missing Wednesday's session before returning as a limited participant Thursday due to a lingering knee issue. Following a full practice Friday, it won't stop him from making a fifth straight appearance this weekend. In the previous four, Mitchell combined for 86 carries and six catches, while do-it-all Deebo Samuel accrued 48 touches and the rest of the backfield tallied four. Expect Mitchell again to receive a majority share of the running back reps Sunday.
Jan 27, 2022
Limited Thursday
Mitchell (knee) will be a limited practice participant Thursday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
After sitting out Wednesday's session, Mitchell is ramping up his activity level as he continues to deal with a knee injury stemming from a Week 13 road matchup with the Seahawks. Still, he's rid himself of a designation by the release of the 49ers' final practice report for three straight weeks, which he'll aim to do Friday. Assuming he's good to go for Sunday's NFC Championship Game at the Rams, Mitchell should approach his 23 touches per game from the past four outings.
Jan 26, 2022
Not practicing Wednesday
Mitchell (knee) won't participate in Wednesday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Once again, the 49ers are placing practice limitations on Mitchell due to the knee injury that has bothered him since early December. He hasn't had any problem playing through the issue, earning most of the snaps given to 49ers running backs over the last four contests. During that stretch, Mitchell has averaged 23 touches for 92.8 yards from scrimmage per game while scoring two TDs. He'll look to mix into drills Thursday and/or Friday and enter the weekend without a designation for Sunday's NFC Championship Game at the Rams.
Jan 23, 2022
Gains 71 yards on 20 touches
Mitchell rushed 17 times for 53 yards and caught three of four targets for 18 more yards in Saturday's 13-10 playoff win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers ran the ball early and often, but the Packers' defensive front was ready for that exact gameplan, leaving Mitchell with an inefficient rushing performance. The talented rookie finished second among both team's position players with 20 total touches, which helped him put together a respectable 71 total yards of offense despite the low efficiency. Those looking to roll with Mitchell in the championship round won't find much of a soft matchup against either the Bucs or Rams, who both boast talented defensive lines. That said, Mitchell should safely clear 15 carries regardless of opponent next Sunday, a feat the back has accomplished in seven consecutive contests.
Jan 19, 2022
Full practice Wednesday
Mitchell (knee) practiced fully Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has managed an uncapped session earlier than he did the previous three weeks as he puts knee irritation further in the rearview mirror. During the recent three-game stretch, he averaged 24 touches for 100 yards from scrimmage per game while totaling two TDs. Mitchell will look to keep it going Saturday versus a Packers defense that has allowed 4.3 yards per carry (17th most in the NFL) and 14 touchdowns (tied for 20th most) to running backs in 17 regular-season contests.
Jan 18, 2022
Limited practice on tap
Mitchell (knee) will practice in a limited capacity Tuesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
As has been the norm for Mitchell since he sat out Weeks 14-16 due to knee irritation, he's again experiencing practice limitations, likely to keep him as fresh as possible with the 49ers in the midst of the playoffs. In three games in the meantime, he's served as the team's workhorse running back en route to 69 carries for 300 yards and one touchdown to go with three catches (on four targets) for no yards and another score. Thursday's injury report will reveal whether or not Mitchell goes into the weekend with a designation for Saturday's divisional-round contest at Green Bay.
Jan 16, 2022
Finds end zone in wild-card win
Mitchell carried the ball 27 times for 96 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 23-17 win over the Dallas in the wild-card round. He also saw two targets but lost 11 yards on his only catch.
ANALYSIS
The running back got the day started right for the 49ers by punching in a four-yard TD run on the team's first possession, giving San Francisco a lead it wouldn't relinquish. With Jimmy Garoppolo still nursing a thumb injury, the Niners will likely lean heavily on their run game again next weekend in the divisional round against the Packers, which should ensure a significant workload for Mitchell.
Jan 14, 2022
Cleared for wild-card round
Mitchell (knee) practiced fully Friday and doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's wild-card game against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Even though Mitchell sat out the team's first practice of the week Wednesday, the 49ers provided no indication he was dealing with any sort of setback with the knee issue that kept him out for three consecutive games Weeks 14 through 16. He gradually increased his participation in practice throughout the week and should be ready to fill his usual role Sunday as the 49ers' lead option on the ground, just as he did in the final two regular-season games. In each of the last five contests he's played, Mitchell has picked up no fewer than 21 carries, so he'll likely remain heavily involved so long as the 49ers aren't forced into catchup mode early on during the postseason opener.
Jan 13, 2022
Bumps up to limited Thursday
Mitchell (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell followed up Wednesday's absence with some reps one day later as he continues to tend to a knee injury. He's played through the concern the past two weeks, handling at least 54 percent of snaps on both occasions and earning 44 touches. During that same stretch, JaMycal Hasty and Jeff Wilson combined for four touches on 42 plays, indicating this is Mitchell's backfield when healthy and available. While he's not 100 percent, Mitchell may have his injury designation removed when the 49ers release their final practice report of the week Friday.
Jan 12, 2022
Held out of practice
Mitchell (knee) isn't practicing Wednesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell came back from a three-game absence and took 44 touches over the final two weeks of the regular season, but he's still bothered by his knee, with coach Kyle Shanahan saying Monday that the running back's practice reps could be limited. Mitchell still figures to play Sunday against the Cowboys, assuming he gets back on the practice field Thursday or Friday without any setbacks.
Jan 10, 2022
Practice limitations to continue
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that the 49ers will continue to manage Mitchell's (knee) reps on the practice field this week, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has been bothered by a knee injury since also picking up a concussion during a Week 13 loss at Seattle. He subsequently missed the next three games, but he's been active for the past two outings, logging at least 50 percent of snaps on both occasions en route to a combined 44 touches for 215 yards from scrimmage and one receiving TD. Last week, Mitchell followed up a DNP on Wednesday with a limited session Thursday and full practice Friday before being cleared of a designation entirely for San Francisco's eventual Week 18 win at the Rams. At the very least, he appears as if he'll have some practice limitations ahead of Sunday's wild-card game in Dallas.
Jan 9, 2022
Rushes for 85 yards in OT win
Mitchell rushed 21 times for 85 yards and did not receive a target as a receiver in Sunday's 27-24 overtime win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell did not carry an injury designation heading into this matchup, which has been a rare occurrence during an injury-filled rookie campaign. The 2021 sixth-round pick finishes the regular season way ahead of expectations with 1,100 combined yards and six total touchdowns in 11 games. It will be very interesting to see how the 49ers treat Mitchell's role next season when the team's running back corps heals up, as the back has clearly established that he can produce as the lead rushing option in a complex offensive scheme. Assuming Mitchell doesn't land on the injury report during practice this week, the rookie will lead San Francisco's backfield in a playoff matchup against the Cowboys next week.
Jan 7, 2022
Good to go
Mitchell (knee) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Rams, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell returned from a three-game absence last week and took 23 touches for 130 yards and a TD in the 23-7 win over Houston. He should be busy again Sunday, regardless of whether Jimmy Garoppolo (questionable/thumb) or Trey Lance is starting at quarterback. In his first matchup with the Rams, back in Week 10, Mitchell took 27 carries for 91 scoreless yards and finished without a target in a 31-10 win for the Niners.
Jan 6, 2022
Returns to limited practice
Mitchell (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Not only did Mitchell work with the 49ers training staff on the side Thursday, he mixed into some drills, too. The activity was notable considering he didn't participate at all Wednesday as he continues to tend to knee irritation. The issue didn't stop Mitchell from tallying 21 touches on 36 offensive snaps this past Sunday against the Texans, as opposed to one touch on 19 such plays between reserves Jeff Wilson and JaMycal Hasty. Assuming Mitchell gains clearance to play this weekend at the Rams -- whether it's on Friday's injury report or prior to Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff -- he should remain San Francisco's lead running back Week 18.
Jan 6, 2022
Working on side Thursday
Mitchell (knee) was spotted working with 49ers trainers on a side field during Thursday's practice, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen if Mitchell will mix into drills and be considered at least a limited participant Thursday, but it's also more activity than he displayed Wednesday as a non-participant. In the end, the 49ers may just be managing the knee issue that, along with a concussion, conspired to keep him sidelined Weeks 14-16. Mitchell was able to return this past Sunday against the Texans and again spearheaded the backfield to the tune of 21 carries for 119 yards while hauling in both targets for 11 yards and one touchdown.
Jan 5, 2022
Sits out Wednesday's practice
Mitchell (knee) was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell put an end to a three-game absence this past Sunday against the Texans, resuming his role as the 49ers' top running back with 23 touches for 130 yards from scrimmage and the first receiving TD of his career. The rookie sixth-round pick has been a revelation when healthy this season, with five 100-yard performances on the ground in 10 appearances. But it appears Mitchell's knee injury continues to bother him, so his status will be one to monitor to ensure he isn't in danger of missing a seventh contest Sunday at the Rams.
Jan 2, 2022
Racks up 130 yards plus TD
Mitchell (knee) rushed 21 times for 119 yards and caught both of his targets for 11 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 23-7 win over Houston.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell returned from a three-game absence and did not skip a beat, producing his sixth 100-plus yard rushing game while collecting his sixth total touchdown of the season in the process. The talented rookie didn't show any residual effects from the knee or head injuries he recovered from, re-establishing himself as the 49ers' clear top back. Mitchell's fantasy managers should also be pleased with the heavy workload despite having a different style of quarterback under center. San Francisco's quarterback situation is unclear heading into the final week of the regular season, but Mitchell should remain a strong fantasy play no matter who starts under center against the Rams.
Jan 2, 2022
Returning to action Sunday
Mitchell (knee) is active for Sunday's game versus the Texans, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Making his first appearance since Week 13, Mitchell may have some conditioning issues considering he dealt with a concussion and a knee injury during that stretch. Still, he's been the most effective 49ers running back by a long shot this season, averaging 4.6 yards on his 165 carries, reeling in 17 of 18 targets for 126 yards and scoring five touchdowns on the ground in nine appearances. Fellow RB Jeff Wilson ran for 4.4 yards per rush during Mitchell's three-game absence, so Mitchell could yield some reps to the former if he's not yet in top form.
Jan 2, 2022
Expected to play Sunday
Mitchell (knee), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Houston, is expected to play, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell, who hasn't played since Week 13, returned to practice Wednesday as a limited participant. He apparently maintained that level of activity throughout the week without any setbacks. Mitchell has a favorable matchup if he does play with the 49ers being a heavy home favorite against the Texans.
Dec 31, 2021
Trending up, deemed questionable
Mitchell (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Houston, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell returned to practice Wednesday as a limited participant and seems to have made it through the week without any setbacks, with Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com suggesting the running back is "trending toward being available." On the other hand, Jimmy Garoppolo (hand) is listed as doubtful, leaving Trey Lance as the likely Week 17 starter. The rookie's previous start came back in Week 5, with Lance taking 16 carries for 89 yards while Mitchell got only 11 touches for 62 yards in the 17-10 loss to Arizona. If he does return this week, Mitchell will get a better matchup with the 49ers heavily favored for a home game against the Texans. If Mitchell is out again, Jeff Wilson presumably will get another week in the lead role.
Dec 30, 2021
Another limited practice
Mitchell (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell maintained his activity level from Wednesday as he attempts to put a knee injury in the rearview mirror. When he mixed into drills this week, he split first-team reps with Jeff Wilson, so the 49ers seem to be preparing Mitchell for snaps if he gains clearance to play Sunday against the Texans. Ultimately, Mitchell's status for Week 17 could receive some clarity upon the release of Friday's practice report.
Dec 29, 2021
Limited in return to practice
Mitchell (knee) will be a limited practice participant Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell sustained a concussion Week 13 at Seattle, and while recovering from the head injury it was discovered that he was dealing with knee irritation. He cleared the concussion protocol last Monday, but the latter issue kept him sidelined for a third consecutive contest last Thursday in Tennessee. Mitchell's appearance on the practice field Wednesday will mark his first since picking up the initial health concern, which may pave the way for him to return to action Sunday against the Texans.
Dec 22, 2021
Won't play Thursday
Mitchell (knee) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Titans, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Jeff Wilson figures to start and handle the lead role for a third straight week, while Trey Sermon (knee) could soon be available after the Niners designated him to return from IR on Wednesday. It remains to be seen if the rookie can play Thursday night, though he'll likely have a small role even if he does. Mitchell, meanwhile, will hope to make it back to practice next week ahead of a Week 17 matchup with the Texans (on Sun., Jan. 2)
Dec 21, 2021
Non-participant at walkthrough
Mitchell (concussion/knee) was estimated as a non-participant for Tuesday's walkthrough.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old continues to be listed as a DNP this week and hasn't practiced since suffering the concussion Week 13 versus the Seahawks. Mitchell likely will need to show some progress at Wednesday's session to retain a legitimate chance of suiting up Thursday at Tennessee, otherwise he could be headed for a third straight absence.
Dec 20, 2021
Listed as DNP on Monday
Mitchell (concussion/knee) was estimated as a non-participant on Monday's injury report, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell hasn't practiced since being diagnosed with a concussion following a Week 12 loss in Seattle. He's also been bothered by knee irritation at the same time, but coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that he's "holding out hope" that Mitchell will return for Thursday's contest at Tennessee, per David Lombardi of The Athletic. Mitchell will have two more chances to make his presence felt on the practice field before the 49ers potentially make a determination on his status for Week 15.
Dec 20, 2021
Could play Thursday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that he's "holding out hope" that Mitchell (concussion/knee) will be able to play Thursday against the Titans, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has missed the last two games due to a concussion and a knee injury, but he'll apparently have a chance to return for Thursday's primetime matchup. His status will likely come into focus based on his participation in practice this week, but Jeff Wilson should handle the majority of the backfield duties if Mitchell remains out against Tennessee.
Dec 17, 2021
Not playing Week 15
The 49ers have ruled Mitchell (concussion/knee) out for Sunday's game against the Falcons, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
According to David Lombardi of The Athletic, head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Mitchell is expected to be removed from the concussion protocol later Friday, but the swelling he's experiencing in his knee is considered serious enough to keep him out for a second straight game. The 49ers remain hopeful that Mitchell will be ready to go for a quick turnaround Week 16, when the team travels to Tennessee for a Thursday game against the Titans. Jeff Wilson is expected to carry the load at running back for San Francisco in Week 15, with receiver Deebo Samuel likely mixing in for reps out of the backfield as well.
Dec 17, 2021
No return to practice
Mitchell (concussion) isn't practicing Friday and thus appears unlikely to play in Sunday's game against the Falcons, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell did some work with the training staff Wednesday and Thursday but ultimately missed every practice for a second straight week. If he does end up sitting again, Jeff Wilson would figure to lead the San Francisco backfield, albeit in a smaller role than what Mitchell's handled for most of the year, with WR Deebo Samuel taking some of the carries while JaMycal Hasty and Kyle Juzsczyk play a bunch of pass snaps.
Dec 16, 2021
Not practicing yet
Mitchell (concussion/knee) didn't practice Thursday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
While he has yet to practice since picking up a concussion Week 13, Mitchell has been seen working off to the side with the 49ers' training staff on back-to-back days, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. With no on-field work to speak of this week, though, Mitchell may be trending toward a second straight absence Sunday against the Falcons. If the preceding is confirmed -- whether it comes on Friday's injury report or 90 minutes before Sunday's 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff -- the 49ers would turn to Jeff Wilson for most of the RB reps, with Kyle Juszczyk, JaMycal Hasty and even Deebo Samuel mixing into the backfield.
Dec 15, 2021
Works on side Wednesday
Mitchell, who won't practice Wednesday due to a concussion and knee irritation, worked on a side field with a member of the 49ers' training staff, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell wasn't spotted on the field at all last week, so this is a somewhat positive development. Still, his journey through the protocol for head injuries hasn't resulted in any reps on the practice field, which will need to happen before he's a consideration to return to action. With Mitchell sidelined this past Sunday at Cincinnati, Jeff Wilson served as the primary runner en route to 13 carries for 56 yards, but Kyle Juszczyk and JaMycal Hasty combined for four catches on five targets, and Deebo Samuel matched his season high with eight carries to go with one reception. A similar breakdown of work may come to pass Week 15 against the Falcons if Mitchell is forced to miss another game.
Dec 15, 2021
Not at practice
Mitchell (concussion/knee) isn't practicing Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell didn't practice last week and was ruled out Friday ahead of Sunday's win over the 49ers. Jeff Wilson filled in as the lead back with 13 carries for 56 yards on 59 percent snap share, but Kyle Juszczyk and JaMycal Hasty got most of the playing time in passing situations, while WR Deebo Samuel took eight carries for 37 yards and a touchdown. The concussion seems to be a bigger obstacle than the knee injury in terms of Mitchell's availability for the upcoming game this Sunday against Atlanta.
Dec 10, 2021
Ruled out
Mitchell (concussion/knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Cincinnati, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
With the knee injury not considered serious, it would seem Mitchell hasn't made enough progress in the concussion protocol to practice or play. His upcoming absence leaves Jeff Wilson and JaMycal Hasty to man the San Francisco backfield in Week 14, with Trey Sermon (ankle) still on IR and Trenton Cannon (concussion) ruled out for Sunday.
Dec 10, 2021
Not seen at Friday's practice
Mitchell (concussion/knee) wasn't spotted at the media-access portion of Friday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell hasn't made any notable progress through the concussion protocol this week, which has coincided with him dealing with "knee irritation" as well. The pair of injuries may conspire to keep him sidelined for a fourth time this season, something that could be confirmed as early as the release of Friday's practice report. In the event he does sit out Sunday in Cincinnati, Mitchell will hand off backfield duties to some combo of Jeff Wilson and JaMycal Hasty.
Dec 9, 2021
No practice again Thursday
Mitchell (concussion/knee) was held out of practice Thursday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
After taking an elbow to the helmet this past Sunday in Seattle, Mitchell was checked for a head injury but cleared to return, finishing the game with 25 touches on an 86 percent share of offensive snaps. But he reported concussion symptoms Monday, and his absence from Wednesday's session was attributed to that and "knee irritation." The pair of health concerns may combine to contribute to Mitchell's fourth missed game of the season Sunday in Cincinnati, but fortunately for the running back he has one more chance to get on the practice field this week. If he's unable to go this weekend, Mitchell likely will yield the backfield to some combination of Jeff Wilson (knee) and JaMycal Hasty.
Dec 8, 2021
Bothered by knee after concussion
Mitchell is dealing with knee irritation in addition to a concussion, and he won't practice Wednesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that an MRI came back clean, but it's still unclear if the knee issue alone would've been enough to hold Mitchell out of practice had he not entered concussion protocol just two days earlier. Either way, his Wednesday absence comes as no surprise, nor does the conclusion that he's in at least some danger of missing Sunday's game against the Bengals. The good news for San Francisco is that Jeff Wilson (knee) managed a limited practice Wednesday, joining JaMycal Hasty to give the team two tailbacks (plus FB Kyle Juszczyk) at practice.
Dec 6, 2021
In concussion protocol
Mitchell entered the concussion protocol Monday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was checked for a concussion in the fourth quarter of this past Sunday's loss at Seattle but was cleared to return. He eventually finished with 22 carries for 66 yards and one touchdown and added three catches (on three targets) for 18 yards. Having said that, coach Kyle Shanahan relayed that Mitchell reported concussion symptoms Monday morning and now will be subject to the five phases of the protocol for head injuries to receive clearance for game action. Mitchell's activity level thus will be of keen interest once the 49ers resume practicing midweek. If he's able to log a limited session Wednesday and/or Thursday, he'd be trending in a positive direction ahead of Sunday's game at Cincinnati.
Dec 5, 2021
Finds end zone in loss
Mitchell carried the ball 22 times for 66 yards and a touchdown and caught all three of his targets for 18 yards in Sunday's 30-23 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
He didn't have a lot of success against a motivated Seattle front seven, with his longest run going for only nine yards, but Mitchell still salvaged his day with a two-yard TD in the first quarter. He also briefly left the game in the second half to be checked for a concussion, but he was able to return to action. Mitchell has seen huge volume in his last three games, amassing 290 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 76 carries, and the Niners will likely lean heavily on the rookie again in Week 14 against the Bengals.
Dec 5, 2021
Back in Sunday's game
Mitchell (head) returned to Sunday's contest at Seattle, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After being examined for a possible concussion early in the fourth quarter, Mitchell returned for the 49ers' first possession of the period. He'll continue to operate as the team's lead runner.
Dec 5, 2021
Being evaluated for head injury
Mitchell is under evaluation for a head injury during Sunday's game in Seattle, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell took an elbow to his helmet on a carry late in the third quarter on which he lost the ball. Ultimately, a fumble was overturned as his knee was down before the ball came loose, but the running back required immediate medical attention and went to the blue sideline tent to be examined. If he's unable to return, Mitchell will end Week 13 with 18 carries for 54 yards and one touchdown and two catches (on two targets) for seven yards. Jeff Wilson and JaMycal Hasty are the other healthy RBs on the 49ers' active roster.
Nov 28, 2021
Makes impact in return
Mitchell carried the ball 27 times for 133 yards and a touchdown and caught five of six targets for 35 yards in Sunday's 34-28 win over the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
After missing last week's contest due to rib and finger injuries, Mitchell seemed none the worse for wear in his return and saw his highest touch volume of the season, setting a new career high in scrimmage yards in the process. The rookie is the clear No. 1 back for the Niners when he's healthy, giving him significant upside in Week 13 against the Seahawks.
Nov 28, 2021
Returning to action Week 12
Mitchell (finger) is active for Sunday's game versus the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell came out of Week 10 with a broken finger that required surgery. Initially, there was optimism from coach Kyle Shanahan that Mitchell would be able to play Week 11, but the 49ers ended up keeping him out of practice and eventually on the sideline last Sunday at Jacksonville. In his return to the practice field Wednesday, Mitchell was tabbed with both the finger and a rib issue, which resulted in limited listings on all three Week 12 injury reports and a questionable designation for Sunday. Both Adam Schefter of ESPN and Jay Glazer on the Fox Sunday morning pregame show noted that Mitchell was poised to play and even start at running back in his return, and he'll do just that. In six previous starts this season, Mitchell averaged 17.7 touches for 88.2 yards from scrimmage per game and scored two rushing TDs.

Likely starter
Mitchell (rib/finger) is going to play and probably start Sunday afternoon against the Vikings, Jay Glazer reported on the Fox Sunday morning pregame show.
ANALYSIS
This fits with the earlier reports from other sources this week that he'd play, with the added confirmation that he'll start.
Nov 28, 2021
Expected to play Sunday
Mitchell (rib/finger), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Vikings, is expected to play, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Assuming he does play, Mitchell likely will retake lead duties out of the backfield, while Jeff Wilson and Trey Sermon would be the main candidates for complementary work with JaMycal Hasty (ankle) still sidelined.
Nov 26, 2021
Status in question for Week 12
Mitchell (rib/finger) is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest versus the Vikings, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell opened Week 12 prep with back-to-back limited listings on 49ers injury reports as he contended with both his recovery from surgery on his finger and a rib issue. The former is the one clouding his status, but coach Kyle Shanahan told Matt Barrows of The Athletic on Friday that Mitchell will play Sunday if he's "comfortable" with how the 49ers are protecting his finger. Assuming he's available this weekend, Mitchell likely will retake lead duties out of the backfield, while Jeff Wilson and Trey Sermon would be the main candidates for complementary work with JaMycal Hasty (ankle) still sidelined.
Nov 25, 2021
Another limited practice
Mitchell (rib/finger) was listed as limited on Thursday's practice report, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell also was limited Wednesday after a week in which he underwent surgery that forced him to sit out this past Sunday at Jacksonville. By at least maintaining his activity level for a second straight day, he seems to be putting himself in a position to return Sunday against the Vikings. Ultimately, though, Mitchell may enter the weekend with an injury designation, leaving a question mark about who will head the 49ers backfield Week 12.
Nov 24, 2021
Returning to practice
Mitchell (finger) will return to practice Wednesday as a limited participant, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell had surgery on his finger last Tuesday and didn't practice last week or play in Sunday's win over the Jaguars. He has a shot to make it back for the upcoming home game against Minnesota this Sunday, though Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle suggests Mitchell still looks "iffy" to play. His return to practice is at least a step in the right direction.
Nov 22, 2021
Deemed 'day-to-day'
Mitchell (finger) is considered "day-to-day" by coach Kyle Shanahan, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan relayed the news Monday, one day removed from Mitchell sitting out the 49ers' Week 11 win at Jacksonville due to a broken finger on his right hand. Mitchell underwent surgery on the appendage last Tuesday and didn't practice last week as a result. San Francisco gets back on the field Wednesday as it prepares for a visit from the Vikings on Sunday, but it remains to be seen if Mitchell makes the requisite progress in his recovery. Against the Jags, Jeff Wilson paced the 49ers backfield with 40 (of 69) offensive snaps and 20 touches, while Deebo Samuel (55 and nine, respectively), Kyle Juszczyk (38, one) and Trey Sermon (24, 11) were next up in the pecking order with JaMycal Hasty (ankle) also sidelined.
Nov 21, 2021
Inactive in Week 11
Mitchell (finger) is listed as inactive Sunday in Jacksonville, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell emerged from Week 10 action against the Rams with a broken finger on his right hand that required surgery Tuesday. There was some optimism at the time that the rookie sixth-rounder would be available Sunday, but Mitchell didn't practice Wednesday through Friday and entered the weekend as doubtful to suit up. With his status for Week 11 now confirmed, the 49ers backfield will be down both Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty (ankle), leaving Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon, Trenton Cannon and Kyle Juszczyk as the team's options at running back.
Nov 19, 2021
Doubtful for Sunday
Mitchell (finger) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game in Jacksonville, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
It's been a roller-coaster week in terms of Mitchell's outlook, with early pessimism replaced by optimism Wednesday afternoon when coach Kyle Shanahan said he expected the running back to play. That was one day after Mitchell had surgery on his broken finger, and since then he's been held out of practice and limited to side work with the training staff. Fellow running back JaMyCal Hasty (ankle) is also ruled out for Sunday's game, leaving Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon, Trenton Cannon and FB Kyle Juszczyk as the backfield options. Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News and David Lombardi of The Athletic both expect Wilson to get the start and presumably most of the carries, while Juszczyk has often handled third-down work when Hasty's been unavailable this year.
Nov 19, 2021
Not practicing, looking shaky
Mitchell (finger) isn't practicing Friday, instead working off to the side with a trainer, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that he expected Mitchell to bounce back from Tuesday surgery and play in Sunday's game at Jacksonville, while David Lombardi of The Athletic reports that GM John Lynch was less optimistic Friday morning in a radio appearance on KNBR. San Francisco beat writers seem to be more in line with Lynch, as Mitchell has now missed practice Wednesday through Friday. Lynch said the running back likely would be a game-day call, in which case the cross-country trip to Jacksonville becomes helpful to fantasy managers with the 49ers scheduled for 1:00 ET kickoff. Inman suggests Jeff Wilson likely will get the start if Mitchell can't go, with Trey Sermon the probable backup and FB Kyle Juszczyk potentially handling some passing downs. JaMycal Hasty (ankle) appears less likely than Mitchell to play, leaving Juszczyk, Wilson and Trenton Cannon as the passing-down options. Mitchell hasn't handled that role all year, and isn't likely to do so anytime soon given his recent finger surgery.
Nov 18, 2021
No practice yet this week
Mitchell (finger) didn't practice Thursday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell carried the load for the 49ers during a Week 10 win against the Rams, churning out 91 yards on 27 carries. Afterward, it was revealed he suffered a broken finger on his right hand during that contest, which necessitated a procedure to fix. Mitchell subsequently has been held out of drills this week as he recovers, instead wearing a blue non-contact jersey on a side field, according to Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News. No matter, coach Kyle Shanahan is of the belief Mitchell will be available Week 11 at Jacksonville. "I think he'll go Sunday," Shanahan told Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. Friday's injury report ultimately will reveal Mitchell's potential to play this weekend, but with JaMycal Hasty (ankle) also hurt at the moment, Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon and Trenton Cannon are the healthy options in the 49ers backfield at the moment.
Nov 17, 2021
Expected to play Sunday
Mitchell (finger) isn't practicing Wednesday, but coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects the running back to play in Sunday's game against Jacksonville, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan's comments suggest Tuesday surgery on Mitchell's finger went well, with the running back now hoping to avoid missed time with his latest injury. There is some chance the finger impacts his workload, though it's arguably less of a concern for Mitchell than it would be for other running backs, as he's been targeted just nine times across 270 snaps in seven games. With JaMycal Hasty (ankle) also missing practice Wednesday, the healthy running backs in San Francisco are Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon and Trenton Cannon.
Nov 16, 2021
Week 11 status in question
Mitchell suffered a finger fracture during Monday's game against the Rams and will undergo a procedure Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. His status for Sunday's game against the Jaguars is unclear at this juncture.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has taken control of the 49ers backfield in 2021 and is coming off of a season-high 27 carries in Monday's win over the Rams. Unfortunately, it appears he didn't escape the contest unscathed and will be forced to get a pin inserted in the finger, per David Lombardi of The Athletic. Coach Kyle Shanahan remains optimistic Mitchell will be able to practice and protect the finger enough to play Sunday, but the rookie back's status likely won't be confirmed until later in the week. If he's forced to sit, some combination of Jeff Wilson, JaMycal Hasty (ankle), Trenton Cannon and Trey Sermon would handle the carries.
Nov 15, 2021
Career high in carries
Mitchell rushed 27 times for 91 yards in Monday night's 31-10 win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell had a few nice runs but often didn't find much room up front. While fellow tailback Jeff Wilson didn't either, finishing with 10 carries for 28 yards, wideout Deebo Samuel actually proved to be San Francisco's most efficient runner, taking his five handoffs for 36 yards and a touchdown. On the bright side, the game flow enabled Mitchell to accumulate a season-high in carries, slowing adding to his yardage total along the way. Nonetheless, he'll strive for more big plays in his next outing, which appears favorable with the 49ers facing the Jaguars in Week 11.
Nov 13, 2021
Set to play Monday
Mitchell (ribs) does not carry an injury designation heading into Monday's divisional matchup with the Rams, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell managed to put together a full practice Saturday which sets the rookie up to make his first appearance under the Monday night lights. JaMychal Hasty, who won't play Monday due to an ankle injury, was the only other running back besides Mitchell to see snaps over the last three weeks, but expect Jeff Wilson and Trenton Cannon to take some of that playing time especially with the former finally set to play after a lengthy stay on injured reserve.
Nov 12, 2021
Limited at practice again
Mitchell (ribs) was a limited practice participant Friday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell continues to sport a no-contact jersey and appears on track to play through the rib injury for a second straight week. He had a season high for targets (five) and a season low for carries (eight) in last weeks 31-17 loss to the Cardinals, with 66 percent snap share being right in Mitchell's usual range. It is possible he picks up some extra work Monday if JaMycal Hasty (ankle) is inactive, though it's more likely Jeff Wilson simply takes over Hasty's passing-down role.
Nov 11, 2021
Still tending to rib injury
Mitchell (ribs) will be a limited participant at Thursday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Last week, Mitchell logged two limited sessions in three chances as a result of a rib injury, so he seemingly is in better health this time around. He proceeded to earn his typical snap share (66 percent) en route to 13 touches for 79 yards from scrimmage this past Sunday against the Cardinals. Reserve running back JaMycal Hasty handled the remaining 34 percent, turning four touches into 13 total yards, but he isn't slated to practice Thursday due to an ankle issue. The situation could open the door for Jeff Wilson to make his season debut, but as long as Mitchell is healthy he's the No. 1 running back in San Francisco.
Nov 8, 2021
Finds success through air Sunday
Mitchell carried the ball eight times for 36 yards and caught all five of his targets for 43 yards in Sunday's 31-17 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers found themselves in a 17-0 hole early in the second quarter, forcing the team to all but abandon its running game and leading to the least productive day of the season on the ground for Mitchell. The rookie stayed involved in the offense, however, setting career highs in catches, targets and receiving yards. Jeff Wilson was active for the first time all year Sunday but didn't see any touches, and it's possible he finds a larger role in Week 10 against the Rams, but Mitchell appears to have a firm hold on the No. 1 job in the San Francisco backfield as long as he stays healthy.
Nov 7, 2021
Playing Sunday
Mitchell (ribs) is active for Sunday's contest versus the Cardinals, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell got on the practice field twice during Week 9 prep, both times donning a blue non-contact jersey. The rookie sixth-rounder ended up being a limited participant and entered the weekend as questionable. While Adam Schefter of ESPN reported earlier Sunday that Mitchell was in line to play -- which now is confirmed -- the 49ers aren't sure how much work the running back will be able to handle. In his five appearances (four starts) this season, Mitchell has averaged 17 touches for 92.6 yards from scrimmage per game while scoring three TDs on the ground. If Mitchell yields backfield reps to teammates, Jeff Wilson, JaMycal Hasty and Trenton Cannon are the candidates to pick up the slack, while Trey Sermon (coach's decision) is a healthy scratch.
Nov 7, 2021
Expected to play Sunday
Mitchell (ribs), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, is expected to play but the 49ers are uncertain how long he'll be able to go, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was on the practice field Friday for the second straight day, but he continued to sport a blue no-contact jersey during the session. Despite this report, fantasy managers will still want to check back in on the status of Mitchell approximately 90 minutes prior to Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff, when San Francisco will release its inactive list.
Nov 5, 2021
Takes questionable tag into weekend
Mitchell (ribs) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com, Mitchell was on the practice field Friday for the second straight day, but he continued to sport a blue no-contact jersey during the session. The 49ers may just be taking some extra precaution by limiting Mitchell's exposure to contact, but his ability to practice in any capacity on back-to-back days bodes well for his chances of suiting up this weekend. Fantasy managers will still want to check back in on the status of Mitchell approximately 90 minutes prior to Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff, when San Francisco will release its inactive list. Assuming Mitchell is active, he should serve as the 49ers' lead option on the ground after clearing 100 yards rushing in both of the past two weeks.
Nov 4, 2021
Limited at practice Thursday
Mitchell (ribs) was limited at Thursday's practice, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
After not practicing at all Wednesday, Mitchell was on the field one day later wearing a blue non-contact jersey, which signaled the 49ers were capping his reps as he deals with a rib issue. Indeed, he operated under practice limitations, giving him one more chance to put in a full showing before week's end. Elsewhere in the backfield, JaMycal Hasty, Trey Sermon and Trenton Cannon avoided the injury report this week, while Jeff Wilson (knee) was designated to return from the reserve/PUP list. No matter, if Mitchell is available this Sunday, he'll be the 49ers' lead runner against the Cardinals.
Nov 4, 2021
Seen at practice Thursday
Mitchell (ribs) was present at the portion of Thursday's practice open to the media, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was donning a non-contact blue jersey, so if he fits in some work he likely won't be more than a limited participant. He's working his way through a rib issue, making it understandable for the 49ers to avoid any unnecessary dings on the practice field. In any case, Friday's injury report will be telling as it pertains to Mitchell's status for a Week 9 matchup with the Cardinals.
Nov 3, 2021
Logs DNP Wednesday
Mitchell (ribs) won't practice Wednesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Barrows notes that the hope is Mitchell gets some practice in during the week, so we'll revisit the running back's status no later than Thursday. In the 49ers' Week 8 win over the Bears, Mitchell was on the field for 36 of a possible 56 snaps on offense, en route to carrying 18 times for 137 yards and a TD.
Nov 1, 2021
Tending to rib injury
Mitchell is dealing with a rib injury and expected to be limited in practice Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell ran roughshod over the Bears on Sunday, turning 18 carries into 137 yards and one touchdown. It marked his three 100-yard game in five appearances as a pro, but he's also now poised to appear on the 49ers' injury report for the second time this season. With practice limitations set to be placed on Mitchell, the team's health running backs are JaMycal Hasty, Trey Sermon and Trenton Cannon, while Jeff Wilson's (knee) practice window to return from the PUP list may open this week and Raheem Mostert (knee) is out for the season.
Oct 31, 2021
Runs wild on Chicago
Mitchell rushed 18 times for 137 yards and was not targeted in the passing game in Sunday's 33-22 win over Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell dominated the backfield touches (18 of 21) for the second consecutive week since returning from injured reserve, cementing his role as the 49ers' lead back going forward. It was the rookie sixth-rounder's third game with both 100-plus yards and a touchdown in five starts this year. Mitchell has elevated himself into must-start territory heading into a matchup against the Cardinals in Week 9.
Oct 25, 2021
Looks strong off bye
Mitchell rushed 18 times for 107 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 30-18 loss to the Colts.
ANALYSIS
It was a tale of two running backs Sunday, as Mitchell posted an identical rushing line to the Colts' Jonathan Taylor. While the latter's team got the victory, the rookie tailback continued to establish himself as the top dog in San Francisco and a reliable fantasy option for managers. Mitchell gets a favorable matchup against the Bears next Sunday, who have given up 122.1 rushing yards per game to opponents this season.
Oct 8, 2021
Cleared for Sunday
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Mitchell (shoulder) will play Sunday against Arizona, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. Mitchell was a full participant in Friday's session, after taking limited reps Wednesday and Thursday, according to Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell missed the 49ers' last two games with the right shoulder injury, allowing rookie Trey Sermon to get a look as the team's lead back. While Sermon bounced back from a poor showing in the Week 3 loss to the Packers with a more productive one (19 carries for 89 yards) last week against the Seahawks, he's still likely to lose at least some work to Mitchell, who briefly took over as the 49ers' top option out of the backfield following Raheem Mostert's (knee) season-ending injury in the opener. Though Mitchell absorbed contact in practices this week and looks healthy again, predicting how the work may break down between him and Sermon is difficult. Shahanan hasn't hinted whether Mitchell will immediately reclaim lead duties in the backfield, or if he'll be eased back into the mix as part of a timeshare with Sermon.
Oct 7, 2021
Remains limited, but taking contact
Mitchell (shoulder) was limited at Thursday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Like last week, Mitchell has logged limited sessions so far this week. Unlike last week, he's gotten rid of his blue non-contact jersey, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. Mitchell continues to work his way back from a shoulder stinger suffered Week 2, which has sidelined him the past two games. If he's able to gain clearance to play Sunday, it's unclear if he'll be able to retake the No. 1 spot on the running back depth chart, or if he'll share the load with Trey Sermon, who has started in Mitchell's place.
Oct 6, 2021
Puts in limited practice
Mitchell (shoulder) practiced in a limited fashion Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After sitting out Week 3, Mitchell logged limited sessions during Week 4 prep, but he donned a non-contact jersey in each one and was deemed inactive this past Sunday against the Seahawks. It's unclear if he ditched the blue jersey, as expected, but he may just be ramping his reps this week as he puts his shoulder stinger further in the rearview mirror. Mitchell has two more practices to go to bump up to all activity, at which point the 49ers will have a better indication of his status for Sunday's game at Arizona. Assuming he suits up, it'll be interesting to see the breakdown of backfield work between Mitchell and Trey Sermon, who has logged back-to-back starts in the former's absence.
Oct 4, 2021
Likely to take contact this week
Coach Kyle Shanahan expects Mitchell (shoulder) to practice without a blue non-contact jersey this week, Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee reports.
ANALYSIS
After sitting out Week 3 due to a shoulder stinger, Mitchell was able to return to the practice field last week in a non-contact jersey, logging three limited sessions in the process. It wasn't enough to gain clearance for game action this past Sunday versus the Seahawks, which allowed Trey Sermon to dominate the backfield work for a second straight contest (19 carries for 89 yards on 51 percent snap share). On Wednesday, it appears Mitchell will take one of the final steps in his recovery, but he may need a few sessions to get back to full participation. Once he does, though, he's a decent bet to retain the No. 1 RB spot on the depth chart.
Oct 3, 2021
Missing second consecutive game
Mitchell (shoulder) is listed as inactive Sunday versus the Seahawks, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell's Week 2 shoulder injury was considered "worse than a stinger" by coach Kyle Shanahan at the time. Shanahan noted during Week 4 prep that Mitchell's availability would come down to pain tolerance, and the rookie sixth-round pick won't be able to give it a go just yet. While Mitchell misses a second consecutive game Sunday, Trey Sermon and fullback Kyle Juszczyk likely will handle the bulk of the backfield reps yet again. Beyond that duo, Trenton Cannon and Jacques Patrick are on hand for special teams work and the occasional rep on offense, if needed.
Oct 3, 2021
Not expected to play Sunday
Mitchell (shoulder), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, isn't expected to play in the contest, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Official confirmation of the running back's Week 4 status will arrive once inactives are posted in advance of Sunday's 4:05 ET kickoff. If Mitchell is indeed unavailable, Trey Sermon would once again be in line for an expanded role in the 49ers' backfield versus Seattle.
Oct 1, 2021
Hoping to play through pain
Mitchell (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Seattle, with coach Kyle Shanahan suggesting the running back's availability could come down to pain tolerance, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan said he doesn't doubt Mitchell's pain tolerance and would consider it "pretty impressive" if the rookie ends up playing, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. That might be nice for Mitchell to hear, but for fantasy managers it's a sign that the running back could be limited or ineffective even if he's able to suit up. With Mitchell out last week, Trey Sermon took a team-high 10 carries for 31 yards and a touchdown while playing 59 percent of snaps on offense, often giving way to FB Kyle Juszczyk in passing situations. It it also possible that the Niners find a role for Trenton Cannon or Jacques Patrick if Mitchell ends up inactive ahead of Sunday's 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff. Shanahan's comments Friday suggest Mitchell will be treated as a game-time decision even if the team isn't optimistic.
Oct 1, 2021
Still wearing non-contact jersey
Mitchell (shoulder) is wearing a non-contact jersey at Friday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This is his third consecutive day in the jersey and likely the third straight day he'll be listed as a limited practice participant. Mitchell's availability for Sunday against Seattle remains uncertain, with a 'questionable' designation and game-time decision looking like a possibility at this point. It remains to be seen how the Niners list Mitchell on their final injury report Friday afternoon.
Sep 30, 2021
Logs another limited session
Mitchell (shoulder) was limited at Thursday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
For a second session in a row, Mitchell was donning a blue no-contact jersey, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. The cautious approach from the 49ers makes sense with Mitchell recovering from a right shoulder injury that was considered "worse than a stinger" and already sidelined him for one game. He'll get one more shot to put in a full practice this week before the team likely places a designation on the running back's status for Sunday's contest against the Seahawks. If Mitchell is able to gain clearance to play, he may join Trey Sermon at the top of the RB depth chart, with fullback Kyle Juszczyk mixing in as he did this past Sunday versus the Packers.
Sep 29, 2021
To be limited Wednesday
Mitchell (shoulder) will practice in a limited capacity Wednesday, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
As was hoped for by coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday, Mitchell is getting back on the field Wednesday after sitting out Week 3 with what was termed "worse than a stinger" in his right shoulder. It'll be interesting to see how Mitchell reacts to the increase of work as he attempts to put himself in a position to play this Sunday against the Seahawks. If he's able to return, he'll likely team with Trey Sermon to head the 49ers backfield with both Raheem Mostert (knee) and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) on injured reserve. There's also a chance Kyle Juszczyk remains more involved in the offense in the short term, especially if Mitchell doesn't get the all-clear for Week 4.
Sep 27, 2021
Looking to practice this week
Coach Kyle Shanahan is hopeful Mitchell (shoulder) takes part in practice this week, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
In particular, Shanahan told Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle that he's "hoping for better signs" that Mitchell is able to suit up Week 4 against the Seahawks after sitting out this past Sunday versus the Packers with what he considered "worse than a stinger" in the running back's right shoulder. With Mitchell sidelined and Raheem Mostert (knee) and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) on IR, Trey Sermon (59 percent of offensive snaps) and Kyle Juszczyk (69 percent) handled all the running back work, while Trenton Cannon and Kerryon Johnson saw action on special teams. Assuming Mitchell is able to return Sunday, it'll be interesting to see how the 49ers backfield will break down.
Sep 26, 2021
Not suiting up Week 3
Mitchell (shoulder) is listed as inactive Sunday versus the Packers, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
It comes as no surprise that Mitchell will sit out after enduring what coach Kyle Shanahan called "worse than a stinger" in the running back's right shoulder last Sunday at Philadelphia. Shanahan acknowledged Friday that Mitchell likely would have been ruled out for Week 3, if not for the banged-up nature of the team's backfield, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. With Mitchell inactive and Raheem Mostert (knee) and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) on injured reserve, the 49ers likely will hand over most of the RB reps to rookie third-rounder Trey Sermon, who completed the concussion protocol this week. Behind Sermon, Kerryon Johnson, Jacques Patrick and Trenton Cannon are the other running back options for San Francisco.
Sep 24, 2021
Nearly ruled out
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Mitchell (shoulder) likely would've been ruled out rather than listed as doubtful if the 49ers had better alternatives in the backfield for Sunday against the Packers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In other words, Mitchell might not play even if he avoids the inactive list ahead of Sunday's 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff. He should be removed from fantasy lineups in all but the most desperate of situations, while fellow rookie Trey Sermon figures to head the San Francisco backfield Sunday night. Recent signings Trenton Cannon and Jacques Patrick are the other tailbacks on the roster, while veterans Chris Thompson and Kerryon Johnson could be called up from the practices squad. Mitchell did return to practice Friday as a limited participant, potentially setting up him to play Week 4 against Seattle. For Week 3, however, he's listed as doubtful.
Sep 24, 2021
Doubftful for Sunday
Mitchell (shoulder) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Packers, while teammate Trey Sermon (concussion) doesn't have an injury designation, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon thus becomes the latest favorite to lead San Francisco's injury-riddled backfield, though the team isn't quite ready to make Mitchell's Week 3 absence official. GM John Lynch did sound pessimistic Friday morning when discussing the sixth-round rookie, though his return to practice Friday as a limited participant could at least be taken as a positive sign for Mitchell's chances to return in Week 4 or 5. With the Niners playing on Sunday night this week, Mitchell's fantasy managers won't want to count on the slim chance of a 'doubtful' player actually suiting up. Matt Barrows of The Athletic expects Sermon to get the start Sunday night.
Sep 24, 2021
Returns to practice.
Mitchell (shoulder) returned to practice Friday, while fellow 49ers running back Trey Sermon (concussion) shed his non-contact jersey, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's good news for both, though Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports that Friday's practice is just a walkthrough, while 49ers GM John Lynch acknowledged Mitchell is "very questionable" for Sunday. Despite the injury woes, there's opportunity for a large workload, especially if one RB plays while the other is inactive. The 49ers' only healthy backfield options are Jacques Patrick and Trenton Cannon, both recent additions.
Sep 24, 2021
Status remains in question
GM John Lynch said Friday that Mitchell's (shoulder) availability for Sunday's game against the Packers is "very questionable," David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell sat out Wednesday's and Thursday's practice sessions due to the shoulder injury, and he may not be available for Sunday's matchup with Green Bay. It's unclear if the 23-year-old will be able to practice in any capacity Friday, and his participation during that session could dictate whether or not he'll have a chance to play heading into the weekend.
Sep 23, 2021
Another DNP on Thursday
Mitchell (shoulder) didn't practice Thursday, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell has yet to get on the field this week due to a shoulder injury suffered Week 2. Coach Kyle Shanahan called the issue "a little worse than a stinger," but the running back still "has a chance to go Sunday" versus the Packers, per David Lombardi of The Athletic. It stands to wonder if Mitchell will need to practice in some capacity Friday to do so, but the 49ers are prepared to roll out a reconfigured backfield with Raheem Mostert (knee) on injured reserve and JaMycal Hasty out for multiple games due to a high ankle sprain. Fellow rookie RB Trey Sermon (concussion) has put together back-to-back limited sessions and seems like the best bet of the regulars to play in Week 3. That quartet aside, Trenton Cannon and Jacques Patrick are the healthy options on the active roster, while Kerryon Johnson and Chris Thompson reside on the practice squad.
Sep 23, 2021
Not seen Thursday
Mitchell (shoulder) wasn't present at the start of Thursday's practice, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After getting banged up Week 2 at Philadelphia, Mitchell was diagnosed with what coach Kyle Shanahan called a shoulder injury that's "a little worse than a stinger," per David Lombardi of The Athletic. There's still a chance Mitchell gets cleared to play Sunday night against the Packers, as does Trey Sermon, who is in the concussion protocol but was limited Wednesday. Elsewhere in the backfield, Raheem Mostert had season-ending knee surgery after Week 1, and JaMycal Hasty is slated to miss multiple games with a high-ankle sprain, leaving Trenton Cannon and Jacques Patrick as the only healthy RBs on the active roster. Meanwhile, Kerryon Johnson and Chris Thompson are stashed on the practice squad as potential elevations.

Not practicing Wednesday
Mitchell (shoulder) won't take part in practice Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was forced out of the 49ers' Week 2 win at Philadelphia with a shoulder concern, but he returned when fellow rookie running back Trey Sermon suffered a concussion. In the interim, tests have revealed that Mitchell's injury is "a little worse than a stinger," but he "has a chance to go Sunday" against the Packers, coach Kyle Shanahan told David Lombardi of The Athletic. As the 49ers backfield currently stands, Raheem Mostert (knee) is on IR, JaMycal Hasty has a high-ankle sprain that's slated to sideline him for multiple games, and Sermon is progressing through the concussion protocol, seemingly making him the healthiest of the four. Trenton Cannon is the only other RB on the active roster, while Kerryon Johnson, Chris Thompson and Jacques Patrick are candidates to be elevated from the practice squad.

Listed as day-to-day
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Mitchell (shoulder) is day-to-day, Josh Dubow of the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell left Sunday's contest late in the fourth quarter, but he was able to return and finish the contest. The rookie appears to be the lead back for San Francisco after Raheem Mostert underwent season-ending surgery after sustaining a knee injury in the season opener. Fellow running backs Trey Sermon (concussion) and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) both sustained injuries Sunday that will likely keep them out of Week 3, so the 49ers are looking at recently acquired Trenton Cannon as the only healthy running back on their roster. If Mitchell is able to suit up against the Packers, he should feast on what has been a sub-par run defense in Green Bay over the past few years.

Briefly leaves game after starting
Mitchell (shoulder) rushed 17 times for 42 yards and caught both of his targets for 11 more yards in Sunday's 17-11 win over the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell -- who debuted in a big way against Detroit last game -- got the nod as lead back following the news of Raheem Mostert's (knee) season-ending surgery earlier this week. The rookie rusher was forced to briefly leave the contest in the fourth quarter after suffering what appeared to be a shoulder injury, but he was able to return and finish the contest. After the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that Mitchell appeared to have suffered a shoulder stinger, and the back will undergo an MRI this week to confirm that it is nothing more serious, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. Fellow backs Trey Sermon (head) and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) also suffered injuries of their own against the Eagles, so Mitchell could remain the starter against the Packers next Sunday even after posting a sub-par fantasy line this week.

Shoulder injury confirmed
Coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers hope Mitchell merely suffered a shoulder stinger during Sunday's 17-11 victory at Philadelphia, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell missed some time in the second half Sunday, but his return was necessitated when fellow rookie Trey Sermon suffered what was eventually confirmed to be a concussion in the fourth quarter. The fact Mitchell was able to come back in the game bodes well for his health in the short term, and he again led the 49ers backfield in touches, with his 19 going for 53 yards from scrimmage. Aside from Mitchell and Sermon, JaMycal Hasty turned nine touches into 59 total yards before injuring his ankle in the final quarter. With all of the trio tending to health concerns, it'll be worthwhile to monitor the overall situation closely as San Francisco prepares to host the Packers next Sunday.

Back in Sunday's game
Mitchell (shoulder) returned to Sunday's contest in Philadelphia, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers may not have pressed their luck with Mitchell after he was diagnosed with a shoulder injury and deemed questionable to return, but fellow rookie Trey Sermon took a hit to the helmet on his first career carry and laid on the field for a spell before going to the sideline and eventually the locker room. It appears as if San Francisco will rely on Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty for the remainder of Week 2.

Picks up shoulder injury
Mitchell sustained a shoulder injury during Sunday's game in Philadelphia, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell didn't join his teammates for the 49ers' third possession of the second half, instead getting his shoulder looked at by the training staff, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic. If Mitchell is unable to return, he'll finish Week 2 with 14 carries for 32 yards and two catches (on two targets) for 11 yards. JaMycal Hasty took over the primary RB role in Mitchell's absence.

To carry load Sunday
Mitchell is expected to head the 49ers backfield Sunday in Philadelphia, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell stepped in for an injured Raheem Mostert in Week 1 at Detroit and ripped off 104 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. With Mostert on the shelf for the rest of the season following knee surgery, Mitchell has assumed the No. 1 spot on the depth chart, but he'll have to contend with JaMycal Hasty and third-round rookie Trey Sermon, the latter of whom was inactive last Sunday. Mitchell himself was selected in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, so his sudden rise seemingly has him on pace to be featured in coach Kyle Shanahan's scheme.

Set to lead backfield
Mitchell seems poised to lead the 49ers backfield in the wake of Raheem Mostert's season-ending knee injury, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Mostert lasted just four snaps and two carries before getting hurt this past Sunday at Detroit, which will require surgery and put a quick end to his campaign. With Trey Sermon, a 2021 third-round pick, inactive, the 49ers turned to rookie sixth-rounder Mitchell to lead the ground game, and he didn't disappoint. After 104 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries, Mitchell is atop the depth chart, but JaMycal Hasty (two touches, 18 yards and a TD in Week 1) and Sermon are nipping on his heels in a backfield that often rotates multiple players on and off the field. It'll be interesting to see if Mitchell retains a similar share of the RB work Sunday in Philadelphia and beyond.

Set for expanded role
Mitchell's teammate, Raheem Mostert, is expected to miss about eight weeks with a knee injury, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Mostert exited Sunday's season opener after logging just two carries, and upon his exit Mitchell rushed 19 times for 104 yards and a TD. It was a strong enough performance to to put him the driver's seat to start this coming weekend's game against the Eagles, though it's possible rookie Trey Sermon -- who was a surprising healthy scratch in Week 1 -- could re-enter the 49ers' backfield equation in short order, with JaMycal Hasty also in the mix.

Breaks Week 1 rookie record
Mitchell rushed 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 41-33 win over Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Raheem Mostert (knee) went down to injury early in the contest, so Mitchell took over as the bell cow and set a new Week 1 rookie rushing record (previously held by Alfred Morris). The sixth-round pick found himself in this position after fellow rookie, Trey Sermon, (who was drafted three rounds ahead of him) was a surprising healthy scratch. The only other healthy back on the roster, JaMycal Hasty, only received one carry and was used primarily as a receiving back. Mitchell certainly proved that he could handle starting duties against the Eagles next Sunday, but that will depend on the health update we receive on Mostert for Week 2.

Playing over Sermon in opener
Mitchell is one of three running backs active Sunday for San Francisco's season opener in Detroit, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The fact that Mitchell, a rookie sixth-round pick, is dressing for Week 1 is probably less of a surprise than the fact that third-round rookie Trey Sermon is in street clothes, considering that Sermon had been operating as the No. 2 back for most of training camp and the preseason. It's unclear if Sermon's healthy scratch is specific to the 49ers' Week 1 game plan, but regardless, Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty will be on hand as the reserve options behind Raheem Mostert. While Mostert is expected to dominate the snaps and touches among the San Francisco backs, Mitchell and Hasty are both expected to see some involvement on offense, especially if the game turns non-competitive in the second half.

Makes preseason debut
Mitchell rushed six times for 24 yards in Sunday's 34-10 preseason win over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was serviceable in his first appearance as a pro. However, with Raheem Mostert, Trey Sermon, JaMycal Hasty and Wayne Gallman all excelling Sunday, it remains to be seen whether the rookie sixth-rounder has done enough to make the Niners' roster for Week 1's matchup against the Lions.

Back at practice
Mitchell (hip) returned to practice Wednesday, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was scratched prior to the 49ers' preseason opener against the Chiefs and has been sidelined until his return Wednesday. He is currently burried on the team's depth chart, but projects as an intriguing prospect. He was the second back taken by the team in the 2021 NFL Draft. First, was Trey Sermon in the third round followed by Mitchell in the sixth.
Aug 15, 2021
Will miss multiple weeks
Mitchell, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, "will be out for a couple weeks" with an adductor strain, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was a surprise scratch from the roster for Saturday's preseason opener against the Chiefs, and the reason for his absence is now known. He's an intriguing prospect for the 49ers, and one who could have made a preseason push, but he's a bit down the depth chart, so it's unlikely the team's early season running back rotation will be altered significantly.
Aug 14, 2021
Not anticipated to play Saturday
Mitchell is not expected to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Chiefs, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell was able to take part in the 49ers' last practice session prior to Saturday's contest, but he was listed among the players on the "Anticipated Will Not Play" list cited in the report. Regardless of the reason for Saturday's absence, he should have a chance to see his first action as a professional in the 49ers' second exhibition contest next Sunday against the Chargers.
