That said, positional teammate Tommy Tremble could well be the more interesting fantasy option next season.

Thomas was not targeted in Sunday's 41-17 loss to the Buccaneers.

Thomas paced the Panthers in receiving yards while teammate Tommy Tremble wasn't activated from the reserve/COVID list. His output was fueled by a 21-yard reception on Carolina's opening drive, gaining more yardage on that play than he'd posted in 11 individual games this season. In playing nearly 90 percent of the offensive snaps Sunday, Thomas would again stand to benefit should Tremble remain sidelined in Week 18 versus the Buccaneers, but his upside is nonetheless relatively restricted overall.

Thomas and recent practice squad call-up Stephen Sullivan are left as the only tight ends on Carolina's roster as Sunday's game against the Saints approaches after Tommy Tremble landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday.

Thomas could be headed for a three-down role, though he's had that opportunity plenty of times in the past and never did much with it. He's also been quiet this season while splitting snaps with Tremble, catching 15 passes for 155 yards in 15 games.

Thomas also recovered a fumble, but he was flagged for a costly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that pushed Carolina out of the red zone during the second quarter. Through nine games, Thomas has now hauled in more than one pass just twice, evidencing his rather restricted fantasy upside.

Thomas saw rookie Tommy Tremble outperform him for the second straight game, but neither tight end is particularly impactful from a fantasy perspective. Through eight games, Thomas now sports just 11 catches on 17 targets for 130 yards and no touchdowns.

Thomas played 70 percent of Carolina's offensive snaps, but a horrible performance on that side of the ball restricted the output of most players. Even though he usually carries limited upside, Thomas will nonetheless strive for an improved showing while the offense rebounds as a whole in Week 8 versus the Falcons.

Thomas caught one of two targets for 41 yards in Sunday's 34-28 overtime loss against the Vikings.

Thomas was responsible for Carolina's longest offensive play of the day, helping him finish second on the team in receiving yards. The tight end has now posted at least 40 yards in consecutive contests, but considering he's only hauled in more than one pass in two of six games played so far, Thomas doesn't get enough volume to be a very impactful fantasy contributor.

Thomas caught all three of his targets for 15 yards in Sunday's 36-28 loss to the Cowboys.

Thomas no longer had competition from Dan Arnold after the veteran was traded earlier in the week, allowing him to play over 60 percent of Carolina's offensive snaps. Overall, though, Thomas' production wasn't too different from his usual output, catching a few short passes underneath. Despite now being the starter, Thomas' upside remains restricted by his relatively small role within the Panthers' scheme, which could also feature rookie third-rounder Tommy Tremble more over the course of the campaign.

Thomas made a minimal impact in the passing game, but it's worth noting he once again played more snaps than starting tight end Dan Arnold. In fact, with 52 offensive plays compared to Arnold's 22, Thomas was way more involved than Arnold, but the latter's three catches for 55 yards on Sunday evidenced his greater upside than Thomas, who sports just 24 yards through two games so far.

Thomas opened the third quarter with a long gain and actually played two more snaps than starter Dan Arnold, who managed just a pair of catches for six yards. Although Thomas isn't expected to be much of a factor in Carolina's passing game this season, occasional impact plays like Sunday's grab would keep him in the mix for spare looks.

This job battle will likely continue into training camp.

Thomas was expected to assume a larger role in Carolina's passing game following the departure of long-time Pro-Bowler Greg Olsen, but that simply did not manifest despite Thomas playing about 65 percent of the offensive snaps. In fact, the former fourth-rounder's final production closely mirrored that from 2019, when he experienced significant dips from his promising rookie campaign. With 2021 marking the final year of Thomas' current contract, he should be plenty motivated to elevate his involvement, but it remains to be seen whether he'll be featured more, and the Panthers could always add another option at tight end.

Thomas wasn't targeted in Sunday's 20-13 win over Washington.

Thomas played 40 offensive snaps, but he failed to receive a target for the second time in five games. The third-year tight end has struggled to generate meaningful production this season despite Greg Olsen's departure, as he's posted a 19-146-1 line through 15 games.

Thomas caught three of four targets for 29 yards in Saturday's 24-16 loss to the Packers.

Thomas' yardage total actually marked a new season high. The tight end has hauled in three passes in consecutive games, giving him a little momentum ahead of next Sunday's game against Washington.

Thomas matched his season high in receptions, enabling him to reach 20 yards for just the second time this term. Despite clearly having restricted upside, Thomas' outing Sunday was at least development in the right direction.

Thomas set new season highs in catches and yards, and while that obviously marks encouraging progress, his overall totals still weren't enough to make much of a fantasy impact.

Thomas featured for 65 percent of Carolina's offensive snaps, yet saw only one pass come his way. That low usage is nothing new for Thomas, however, as he's totaled just five catches on 10 targets for 30 yards and a touchdown through five weeks. Such a restricted role in the passing game gives Thomas minimal fantasy value.

Thomas has now managed merely 30 receiving yards through four games, but his touchdown from two yards Sunday at least offered a glimmer of hope. Interestingly, though, Thomas actually featured for fewer snaps than fellow tight end Chris Manhertz, who finished with one catch for 17 yards. With neither option being particularly productive, Carolina's starting tight-end title hasn't meant much in fantasy terms thus far.

The tight end will be desperate to make a larger impact in Week 3 versus the Chargers, but Sunday's goose egg sets the bar incredibly low.

As the starting tight end, however, Thomas at least should see enough playing time to make a bigger impact in upcoming weeks.

Thomas has had his own struggles with drops (three each season) and blocking, but he's an excellent athlete -- 4.74 40-yard dash, 36-inch vertical at 259 pounds -- who will be just 24 years old for the entire 2020 campaign. He's also shown glimpses of fantasy production in his 10 career games with two-thirds or more of offensive snaps, averaging 4.0 catches for 39.4 yards and 0.3 touchdowns (9.7 PPR points) on 5.9 targets. The Panthers may bring in a draft pick and/or veteran to compete for snaps, but Thomas should at least have some chance to secure a three-down role. Meanwhile, Olsen is expected to visit with Buffalo, Washington and Seattle in the coming weeks.
