Jimmy Garoppolo Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Buccaneers vs Rams game on Sunday with our National Football League injury report.Aug 14, 2025
Not slated to play Saturday
Garoppolo is not in line to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Chargers, Eric Edholm of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Given that top QB Matthew Stafford is still hampered by a back issue, it's no surprise that the Rams are playing it safe with their veteran backup, with Stu Jackson of the team's official site having previously relayed via coach Sean McVay that Garoppolo won't play in any preseason games. In that context, Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn are available to handle signal-caller reps versus the Chargers on Saturday.

Likely to sit Saturday
Garoppolo is not in line to play in the Rams' preseason opener against the Cowboys on Saturday, Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
With Matthew Stafford sidelined due to an aggravated disc in his back, Garoppolo has been handling most of the first-team reps throughout training camp. Klein relays that head coach Sean McVay typically doesn't play starters and other significant players during preseason games, so Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn would be in line to take snaps under center Saturday if Garoppolo is indeed sidelined.

Looking good with first team
Garoppolo has impressed with the first-team offense with Matthew Stafford (back) sidelined, with coach Sean McVay saying he "was awesome" during Tuesday's session, Stu Jackson and Wyatt Miller of the Rams' official site report.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo appears in line to handle the bulk of first-team reps throughout training camp and the preseason, with McVay saying Wednesday that Stafford is week-to-week due to an aggravated disc in his back, per Grant Gordon of NFL.com. McVay downplayed the severity of Stafford's injury and said he expects the 37-year-old to be ready for Week 1, but in the meantime at least Garoppolo will see continued opportunities to build chemistry top with wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. Of course, given McVay's track record, it's likely Garoppolo and the rest of the first-team unit won't take the field during Saturday's preseason opener against the Cowboys.

Re-signs with Rams
Garoppolo is re-signing with the Rams on a one-year contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
This comes as no surprise, after Garoppolo threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 18 loss to Seattle while mostly playing with other backups (against the Seahawks' starters). It was an impressive performance, and a far cry from what Garoppolo did the year before in seven games for the Raiders (seven TDs, nine interceptions). In any case, he's 33 years old and will return to Los Angeles as Matthew Stafford's backup.

Logs single start in backup role
Garoppolo completed 24 of 41 passes for 334 yards, two touchdowns and an interception during the 2024 regular season, adding two rushing attempts for five yards.
ANALYSIS
In his lone appearance of the season, Garoppolo showcased his abilities to potential suitors and performed well, completing touchdown passes to Tyler Higbee and Tyler Johnson with mostly backups on the field for the Rams. Head coach Sean McVay may be inclined to bring the 31-year-old Garoppolo, an unrestricted free agent, back for another round as the primary backup to Matthew Stafford if the price is right, as third-stringer Stetson Bennett has yet to take a snap in a regular season game and had a miserable preseason with five interceptions and a lost fumble over two starts.
Jan 5, 2025
Healthy results in spot-start
Garoppolo completed 27 of 41 pass attempts for 334 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while rushing twice for five yards in Sunday's 30-25 loss to Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Sean McVay opted to rest several key starters with the NFC West title locked up, opening the door for Garoppolo to make his 2024 debut with the Rams. The veteran quarterback performed admirably given the circumstances, almost leading a second-unit offense to victory while posting solid fantasy numbers. The 31-year-old did well in this spot-start to possibly earn some looks from potential QB-thin rosters this upcoming offseason as his one-year deal with Los Angeles nears a close. Matthew Stafford is in line to re-take the reins of McVay's offense in the first round of the playoffs in a home tilt against either Minnesota or Detroit next weekend.

Starting Week 18
Rams coach Sean McVay confirmed Wednesday that Garoppolo will replace Matthew Stafford as the starting quarterback for Sunday's game against Seattle, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo gets his first start of the year in a tough situation to put up good numbers, as the Rams figure to be resting a lot of starters against a Seahawks defense that'll be using most of its top guys. The Seahawks are heavily favored to win now that McVay has confirmed he's resting a bunch of starters.

Likely to play in Week 18
Head coach Sean McVay suggested Monday that Garoppolo will serve as the Rams' primary quarterback in Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports. "I think he's a really, really good football player and I'm looking forward to seeing him just go play the way he's capable of," McVay said of Garoppolo. "It's a great challenge against an excellent defense that's hitting their stride at the right time."
ANALYSIS
While they can claim the No. 3 seed in the NFC playoffs with a win over the Seahawks, the Rams are already assured no worse than the fourth seed -- and the home game in the wild-card round that comes with it -- after having already clinched the NFC West title. McVay suggested that he'll prioritize resting the team's top players and avoiding injuries for Week 18 rather than going all in on securing the No. 3 seed, meaning that normal starting quarterback Matthew Stafford will likely be a healthy inactive or play only limited snaps while Garoppolo either starts or directs the offense for .the bulk of the contest. With 63 career NFL starts on his resume, the 33-year-old Garoppolo is about as a battle-tested as it gets for a backup quarterback, but he has yet to make his Rams debut while Stafford has played every snap through Los Angeles' first 16 games of the season.

Reinstated from suspension
The NFL reinstated Garoppolo from his two-game suspension Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was suspended for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy before the season, and he's now been reinstated after missing the Rams' first two games. Now that he's returned from suspension, expect Garoppolo to serve as the Rams' No. 2 quarterback behind Matthew Stafford.
Aug 11, 2024
Won't play Sunday
Garoppolo is not expected to play in Sunday's preseason game against the Cowboys, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo did not appear among the quarterbacks suited up pregame, leaving Stetson Bennett as Dresser Winn to handle the Rams' signal-caller duties Sunday, according to Stu Jackson of the team's official site. Garoppolo is expected to serve as the No.2 quarterback this season, though he'll still miss the first two regular-season games while serving a suspension for a violation of the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Therefore, Bennett and Winn are set to compete for the backup quarterback job to begin the 2024 campaign, so it's not too surprising that they'll be the ones under center for the team Sunday. Garoppolo's next chance to suit up this preseason will come during Saturday's exhibition against the Chargers.

Finds new home in L.A.
The Rams and Garoppolo (suspension) agreed to a one-year contract Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo didn't exactly uphold the three-year contract he signed with the Raiders last March, appearing in just seven games due to injury and an eventual benching for rookie QB Aidan O'Connell after Week 8. Overall, Garoppolo completed 110 of 169 passes (65.1 percent) for 1,205 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions in his stint with the silver and black. The current offseason has included a two-game suspension because of a violation of the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances, but Garoppolo figures to serve as Matthew Stafford's backup Week 3 and beyond in the coming campaign once the former completes the ban.
Mar 13, 2024
Released by Raiders
The Raiders have released Garoppolo.
ANALYSIS
Per Paul Gutierrez of ESPN, the same applies to slot receiver Hunter Renfrow, with the moves slated to save the Raiders more than $19 million against their salary cap. Garoppolo is thus free to sign with another team, but wherever he lands, the veteran QB will be forced to sit out the first two games of the 2024 season due to a suspension for violating the NFL's performance enhancing substances policy. With Garoppolo no longer in the mix, Aidan O'Connell and Gardner Minshew now top Las Vegas' signal caller depth chart.
Feb 16, 2024
Suspended for PED violation
Garoppolo will be suspended for the first two games of 2024 for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances, and the Raiders are expected to release him this offseason. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Garoppolo used a prescribed medication without having a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption from the league. He was likely headed for a release anyway, as the Raiders benched him in 2023 and can avoid paying an $11.25 million roster bonus if they cut the 32-year-old before March 17. This suspension may also allow the team to nullify an $11.25 million base salary that previously was guaranteed.
Jan 13, 2024
Possibly one-and-done in Las Vegas
Garoppolo completed 110 of 169 pass attempts for 1,205 yards and seven touchdowns to nine interceptions across seven games in his first season as a Raider. He also rushed 20 times for 39 yards and one lost fumble.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo, who'd been demoted from the starting quarterback role by interim head coach Antonio Pierce after a dismal Week 8 performance against the Lions, made a brief appearance in the Raiders' Week 18 win over the Broncos when rookie Aidan O'Connell exited the contest for three snaps with a finger injury. Garoppolo was sacked on a third down to end his lone drive in three-and-out fashion, which symbolized his disappointing 2023 campaign. While the Raiders are slated to fill their permanent general manager and head coaching positions in 2024, Garoppolo could be on the move to another franchise for a fresh start at 32 years old.

Loses hold of starting gig
Garoppolo has been demoted from the starting quarterback role, with Las Vegas interim head coach Antonio Pierce announcing Wednesday that Aidan O'Connell will serve as the team's new top signal-caller beginning with Sunday's game against the Giants, Rachel Gossen of the Raiders' official site reports. "We just feel like he gives us the best chance," Pierce said of O'Connell.
ANALYSIS
After being appointed as the interim coach following the firing of Josh McDaniels earlier in the day, Pierce didn't wait long to make his first major personnel change. Pierce didn't clarify whether Garoppolo or Brian Hoyer will serve as the No. 2 quarterback Week 9, but the 3-5 Raiders appear set to give the rookie O'Connell an extended evaluation in what's shaping up to be a non-contending season. Garoppolo's move down the depth chart comes after he turned in a dismal performance in his return from a one-game absence due to a back injury in a 26-14 loss to the Lions on Monday, when he completed just 10 of 21 pass attempts for 126 yards and an interception while also taking six sacks. Despite missing two of the Raiders' eight games -- he also sat out Week 4 due to a concussion -- Garoppolo leads the NFL with nine interceptions at the halfway point of the season and has regressed mightily from an efficiency standpoint over his past three starts, completing just 62.2 percent of his passes for 6.7 yards per atte

Could be bound for bench
Garoppolo appears to be headed for a bench role, as the Raiders are "leaning toward" having rookie quarterback Aidan O'Connell start Sunday's game against the Giants, a source tells Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
ANALYSIS
Bonsignore issued his report just over an hour after the Raiders announced the firings of head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager David Ziegler. The coaching and front-office shakeup looks as though it may extend to the personnel, as the 3-5 Raiders could be motivated to give O'Connell a longer look in the midst of a losing season, especially with Garoppolo having underwhelmed through his first six starts with Las Vegas. Despite missing games due to a concussion and back injury, Garoppolo has thrown a league-high nine interceptions on the season. He had completed 68.1 percent of his throws and averaged a respectable 7.5 yards per attempt through his first three starts, but since returning the concussion that kept him out Week 4, Garoppolo has seen his efficiency dip substantially over his subsequent three starts (62.2 percent completion rate, 6.7 YPA). Garoppolo is in the first season of a three-year, $72.75 million contract, but only $33.75 million of the deal is fully guaranteed. The Raiders can save

Dreadful in return
Garoppolo (back) completed 10 of 21 passes for 126 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Monday's 26-14 loss to the Lions. He added two rushing attempts for 12 yards.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo looked rusty in his return from a one-game absence due to a back injury. He had just 31 passing yards with an interception in the first half, and things didn't get much better after halftime. Vegas' first touchdown was scored by Josh Jacobs on the ground, and the second came courtesy of the defense on a pick-six. Garoppolo's leg bent awkwardly when he took an illegal low hit in the fourth quarter, but the oft-injured quarterback managed to stay in the game, and a silver lining from this ugly performance is that Garoppolo seems to have walked away healthy. He'll look to shake off the rust at home against the Giants in Week 9.

Returns to full practice
Garoppolo (back) practiced fully Friday, Anthony Galaviz of The Fresno Bee reports.
ANALYSIS
After not practicing at all last week and being inactive for the Raiders' Week 7 loss to the Bears, Garoppolo returned to a limited session Thursday. A full practice Friday sets the stage for the QB to return to action Monday night against the Lions, making him a Week 8 lineup option for those in deeper formats. In the five games he's suited up for this season, Garoppolo has thrown for 1,079 yards, while recording a 7:8 TD:INT ratio in that span.
Oct 26, 2023
Returns to limited practice
Garoppolo (back) was listed as a limited practice participant Thursday, Rachel Gossen of the Raiders' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo didn't practice at all last week, so the QB's return to a limited session Thursday has him trending in a positive direction ahead of Monday night's game against the Lions. For his part, coach Josh McDaniels noted that the team is "hopeful" Garoppolo will be available for Week 8 action, with the signal caller now having two more opportunities to increase his practice participation before the Raiders submit their final injury report of the week Saturday.
Oct 26, 2023
Returning to practice
Coach Josh McDaniels said that Garoppolo (back) will practice Thursday, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With regard to Garoppolo, who didn't practice at all last week and missed this past Sunday's loss to the Bears, McDaniels noted that the Raiders are hopeful that the QB will play Monday night against the Lions, barring any setbacks. Thursday's injury report will outline Garoppolo's official participation level, but at this stage he's trending in the right direction ahead of Week 8 action.
Oct 21, 2023
Set to return Week 8
Garoppolo (back), who is listed as out for Sunday's game at Chicago, is expected to return to the lineup for the Raiders' Week 8 game in Detroit on Oct. 30, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo will be missing his second game of the season Sunday, this time on account of a back injury after he sat out the Raiders' Week 4 loss to the Chargers while in concussion protocol. Though Garoppolo didn't practice in any fashion this week while dealing with what has been described as overall back soreness, Las Vegas head coach Josh McDaniels said the signal-caller "dodged a big bullet" after scans showed no internal injuries, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Brian Hoyer -- who came on in relief of the injured Garoppolo in the Raiders' Week 6 win over the Patriots -- will pick up his first start of the season this Sunday while Garoppolo gets some extra time off to heal.
Oct 20, 2023
Won't play in Week 7
Garoppolo (back) has been ruled out for Sunday's game in Chicago, Rachel Gossen of the Raiders' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was forced out of the Raiders' Week 6 win against the Patriots with a back injury in the second quarter and took an ambulance to a local hospital. After failing to practice at all Wednesday through Friday, he'll miss at least one contest as a result. The Raiders have yet to make a decision on their Week 7 starting quarterback, but coach Josh McDaniels told Tashan Reed of The Athletic that they'll know for sure who's getting the call between veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie fourth-round pick Aidan O'Connell after Friday's session. Garoppolo's next chance to play is Monday, Oct. 30 at Detroit.
Oct 19, 2023
Not in line to play Sunday
Garoppolo (back) is not slated to play Sunday against the Bears, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
With Garoppolo, who didn't practice Wednesday, trending toward being ruled out by the Raiders ahead of Sunday's game, either Brian Hoyer or Aidan O'Connell will get the Week 7 start at QB. Assuming Garoppolo ends up missing this weekend's contest, he'll target a potential return to action Week 8 against the Lions (Mon, Oct. 30).
Oct 18, 2023
Sitting out Wednesday's practice
Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels said Garoppolo (back) won't practice Wednesday, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
McDaniels didn't offer any additional updates regarding the status of Garoppolo, who was taken to a local hospital for evaluation after exiting this past Sunday's 21-17 win over New England. Garoppolo will have two more chances to return to practice before the Raiders release their final Week 7 injury report for Sunday's game against the Bears. Veteran Brian Hoyer came on in relief of Garoppolo against the Patriots, but rookie Aidan O'Connell started against the Chargers when Garoppolo missed Week 4 while recovering from a concussion. Both signal-callers could thus be in contention to play Sunday if Garoppolo isn't available.
Oct 16, 2023
Set for more tests Monday
Garoppolo will undergo more tests Monday to determine the severity of the back injury he suffered in Sunday's 21-17 win over the Patriots, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was injured midway through the Week 6 win and was taken to a Las Vegas-area hospital for evaluation. According to Schefter, the Raiders "believe it's too early to conclude anything about his status" for the team's Week 7 game against the Bears next Sunday. Brian Hoyer was active as the No. 2 quarterback against New England and came in to replace Garoppolo, but it was rookie Aidan O'Connell who drew the start in Las Vegas' Week 4 loss to the Chargers when Garoppolo was out with a concussion. As a result, it's unclear which of the two signal-callers might be first in line to fill in for Garoppolo should he sit out against the Bears.
Oct 15, 2023
Won't return Sunday
Garoppolo (back) won't return to Sunday's game against the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Per Paul Gutierrez of ESPN, Garoppolo was taken to a local hospital for evaluation after suffering his back injury late in the second quarter of the contest. In his absence, Brian Hoyer has taken over at QB for the Raiders.
Oct 15, 2023
Unlikely to return Sunday
Garoppolo (back) isn't expected to return to Sunday's game against the Patriots, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was seen grabbing at his lower back before going to the locker room in the second quarter. He then was spotted getting into an ambulance and leaving the stadium entirely, per Heidi Fang of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. With Aidan O'Connell inactive Sunday, Brian Hoyer will direct the Raiders offense for the rest of Week 6.
Oct 15, 2023
Hurts back Sunday
Garoppolo was forced out of Sunday's game against the Patriots with a back injury.
ANALYSIS
With Garoppolo injured and Aidan O'Connell inactive, Brian Hoyer will take over at QB for the Raiders. Prior to his exit Sunday, Garoppolo completed 14 of his 22 passing attempts for 162 yards, with a TD and an interception.
Oct 10, 2023
Works around INT in MNF win
Garoppolo (concussion) completed 22 of 31 pass attempts for 208 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Monday's 17-13 win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo made a healthy return from a one-game absence due to a concussion suffered against Pittsburgh in Week 3. The veteran signal-caller had a pedestrian fantasy line, but played well considering his best weapon, Davante Adams (shoulder), wasn't at full strength Monday. Garoppolo did throw an ill-advised interception on the opening drive of the second half when he forced an outside throw to a covered Jakobi Meyers that was easily picked off by Green Bay's defense. It was an otherwise solid performance from Las Vegas' starting quarterback as he prepares to face the team that drafted him in a home matchup against New England on Sunday.
Oct 6, 2023
Clears protocol, practices fully
Garoppolo (concussion) practiced fully Friday, Rachel Gossen of the Raiders' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network and Adam Schefter of ESPN, Garoppolo has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol and thus is slated to start Monday night's game against the Packers. Prior to being inactive for the Raiders' Week 4 loss to the Chargers -- which Aidan O'Connell started -- the veteran QB completed 68.1 percent of his passes for 709 yards, with five touchdowns and six interceptions through the three games he suited up for this season.
Oct 6, 2023
In line to play Monday
Garoppolo gained clearance to play from the concussion protocol and is slated to start Monday against the Packers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo opened Week 5 prep Thursday with a limited listing on the Raiders' injury report. Assuming he was a full participant Friday, he'll seemingly be on track to miss just one game as a result of the health concern. With Garoppolo's status likely to be cleared up in the near future, the main question mark for the Raiders offense is Davante Adams, who didn't practice Thursday due to a shoulder issue. Adams has two more chances to put himself in a position to suit up versus his former team Monday.
Oct 5, 2023
Officially limited Thursday
Garoppolo (concussion) was listed as a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Rachel Gossen of the Raiders' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Previous reports suggested that Garoppolo was on track to practice fully, but he ended up being officially deemed limited by the Raiders. In any case, the QB is reportedly in the final stages of the NFL's concussion protocol, which has him trending in the right direction as Monday night's game against Green Bay approaches.
Oct 5, 2023
Slated to practice fully
Coach Josh McDaniels noted that Garoppolo is in "the final stages" of the NFL's concussion protocol, Levi Edwards of the Raiders' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The report adds that Garoppolo will be a full participant at practice Thursday, which has the QB trending toward a return to action Monday night against the Packers in the absence of any setbacks. Garoppolo logged limited practices last Thursday and Friday before ultimately being ruled out for Week 4 action, which led to rookie Aidan O'Connell starting this past Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Chargers.
Oct 2, 2023
Remains in concussion protocol
Head coach Josh McDaniels said Monday that Garoppolo is still in concussion protocol and will be the starting quarterback when he's cleared, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo missed the Raiders' Week 4 loss to the Chargers, sending rookie Aidan O'Connell into action. O'Connell had mixed results in his first career start, so it's not surprising to see Garoppolo get a vote of confidence from his coach. The veteran quarterback will have until Thursday to clear protocols before Las Vegas has to release its first injury report of Week 5 prep, as the Raiders will face the Packers on Monday Night Football this week.
Sep 30, 2023
Won't play against Chargers
Garoppolo (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's Week 4 game against the Chargers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo practiced on a limited basis Thursday and Friday but was unable to gain clearance from the league's concussion protocol. The Raiders have yet to announce who will start under center against Los Angeles, but veteran Brian Hoyer figures to be the choice over rookie Aidan O'Connell. The loss of Garoppolo is a hit to the fantasy stocks of both Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers, though Adams should still soak up double-digit targets. Garoppolo will look to return in Week 5 against the Packers.
Sep 29, 2023
Listed as questionable for Week 4
Garoppolo (concussion) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Chargers after logging another limited practice Friday, Anthony Galaviz of The Fresno Bee reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo has yet to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol, but he was able to practice in limited fashion Thursday and Friday after sitting out Wednesday. If he gains clearance in time to suit up Sunday, Garoppolo would stand to benefit from a favorable matchup against a Los Angeles secondary that's allowing a league-high 337 passing yards per game. Should Garoppolo sit, either veteran Brian Hoyer or rookie Aidan O'Connell would lead the offense against the Chargers.
Sep 29, 2023
Still in concussion protocol
Garoppolo remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo, who was limited at practice Thursday, is slated to participate in Friday's session, after which the Raiders should have a better idea of the QB's chances of playing Sunday against the Chargers. If Garoppolo is unavailable this weekend, 37-year-old Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O'Connell would be next up for the team's signal-caller reps versus Los Angeles.
Sep 28, 2023
Practices in limited fashion
Garoppolo (concussion) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Garoppolo hasn't yet cleared the NFL's five-step concussion protocol, he took the first tangible step forward in his recovery by returning to practice Thursday after he had previously sat out Wednesday's session. He still has a couple more hurdles to clear before exiting the protocol, but at this stage of the week, Garoppolo appears to be trending toward suiting up this Sunday against the Chargers. The Raiders will continue to keep both Brian Hoyer and Aidan O'Connell ready to play in the event Garoppolo takes a step back in his recovery or otherwise fails to clear the protocol ahead of Sunday's contest.
Sep 28, 2023
Returns to practice
Garoppolo (concussion) was present for practice Thursday, Levi Edwards of the Raiders' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo missed Wednesday's practice, but his return to the field Thursday bodes well for his chances of playing Sunday against the Chargers. The Raiders' upcoming injury report will reveal the participation level of Garoppolo, who has been in the NFL's concussion protocol ahead of Week 4 action.
Sep 27, 2023
Remains in protocol
Garoppolo (concussion) remains in the NFL's concussion protocol Wednesday, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo, who didn't practice Wednesday, per Tashan Reed of The Athletic, underwent concussion testing after Monday's loss to the Steelers, and he will have to clear the league's five-step concussion protocol in order to suit up Sunday against the Chargers. Coach Josh McDaniels said veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O'Connell will both be preparing to start in the event that Garoppolo is unavailable. Any of the three quarterbacks could still wind up being named the starter for Sunday's game, though Garoppolo would be the first choice if cleared to play.
Sep 27, 2023
Optimism for Week 4 availability
The Raiders have optimism that Garoppolo will clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol in time to play this Sunday against the Chargers, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though he was able take every snap on offense in the Raiders' 23-18 loss to Pittsburgh this past weekend, Garoppolo was diagnosed with a concussion following the contest, with the injury likely stemming from a helmet-to-helmet hit he took from the Steelers' Minkah Fitzpatrick. Las Vegas will release its first Week 4 practice report later Wednesday, when it will be known whether Garoppolo made enough progress in his recovery from the concussion to practice in at least a limited fashion. If Garoppolo fails to clear the protocol prior to the weekend or is available only as an emergency backup after failing to log enough practice reps in advance of the game, veteran Brian Hoyer would likely serve as Las Vegas' starting quarterback versus the Chargers.
Sep 25, 2023
Officially in concussion protocol
Garoppolo has been placed in the NFL's concussion protocol, coach Mike McDaniels revealed Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Minkah Fitzpatrick in the second half of Sunday's 23-18 loss to Pittsburgh. The quarterback was able to finish the game but didn't attend post-game media sessions because he was being evaluated for a concussion. Those evaluations have resulted in Garoppolo begin placed in the league's five-step concussion protocol. Garoppolo's progress through the protocol will likely be updated throughout the week, and if he's unable to return in time to face the Chargers in Week 4, Brian Hoyer would likely get the start, with Aidan O'Connell on hand to provide quarterback depth.
Sep 25, 2023
May have suffered head injury
Garoppolo is being evaluated for a concussion following Sunday's 23-18 loss to the Steelers, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unconfirmed when Garoppolo may have suffered the injury, but it is the second time in three weeks that the quarterback has been looked at for a potential head injury. Garoppolo played the entire game against Pittsburgh, completing 28 of 44 passes for 324 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Minkah Fitzpatrick in the second half, which was flagged for a roughing the passer penalty on Fitzpatrick. If Garoppolo is unable to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol before the team's next game, Brian Hoyer would fill in Nov. 1 against the Chargers,
Sep 17, 2023
Held in check by Buffalo
Garoppolo completed 16 of 24 passes for 185 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday's 38-10 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo orchestrated a touchdown drive on the Raiders' opening possession, completing all three of his passes for 45 yards -- highlighted by a 16-yard connection with Davante Adams for the score. However, he was intercepted one drive later and his day continued to spiral from there as he was unable to consistently connect with any skill-position players besides Adams and Josh Jacobs. Through two games in Las Vegas, Garoppolo has shown the ability to run the offense efficiently at times, but he's also turned the ball over three times.
Sep 14, 2023
Turns in full practice
Garoppolo (ankle) was a full practice participant Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The Raiders haven't revealed whether Garoppolo's listed ankle injury is related to his surgically repaired left foot, but his upgrade from limited practice participation Wednesday to full participation Thursday erases any concern about his availability for Sunday's game in Buffalo. Garoppolo proved to be an effective game manager in the Raiders' 17-16 win over the Broncos in Week 1, committing just one turnover (an interception) while completing 20 of 26 pass attempts for 200 yards and two touchdowns to go with an additional nine yards on the ground.

Listed as limited Wednesday
Garoppolo (ankle) was listed as a limited participant in practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo dealt with a foot injury prior to the season but looked spry in his Raiders debut, sealing a 17-16 Week 1 victory over the Broncos with an eight-yard scramble on 3rd-and-7 to get the game-clinching first down. It's unclear whether this ankle injury is connected to Garoppolo's prior foot problem, but regardless, it isn't expected to affect his availability Sunday in Buffalo, as Garoppolo indicated to Vic Tafur of The Athletic after Wednesday's practice that the quarterback is doing fine.

Gets first win with LV
Garoppolo completed 20 of 26 pass attempts for 200 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 17-16 win over the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo had a successful debut with the Raiders after signing a three-year, $67.5 million contract this past offseason. The 31-year-old looked healthy following offseason foot surgery, completing 77 percent of his passes and even taking off for an eight-yard scramble to extend a drive. Garoppolo got off to a good start against a tough defense, but he doesn't excite as a starter in fantasy. He will face another stiff test with his new club when the Raiders stay on the road to take on the Bills in Week 2.

Crisp in brief action Saturday
Garoppolo completed all four pass attempts for 39 yards in the Raiders' 34-17 preseason win over the Rams on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was in for the Raiders' opening possession and led a crisp nine-play, 68-yard march during which he completed passes to four different targets. It was the veteran's official Raiders debut, and consequently, the first opportunity to prove his health after last season's foot issues. Garoppolo gave way to Brian Hoyer after that first drive as head coach Josh McDaniels clearly looked to limit his exposure, but it's certainly possible he gets more run in the preseason finale against the Cowboys next Saturday night.
Aug 19, 2023
Expected to play Saturday night
Garoppolo is expected to start Saturday's preseason game against the Rams, Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo didn't play in the preseason opener, so this will be his Raiders debut. We shouldn't expect him to play more than a couple series, if that, and rookie Aidan O'Connell figures to lead the Vegas quarterbacks in snaps for this one. Garoppolo will look to knock some rust off in his first action since last season's foot surgery.
Aug 13, 2023
Won't play in preseason opener
Garoppolo won't play in Sunday's preseason opener versus San Francisco, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was suited up for warmups, but he'll ultimately watch the exhibition from the sidelines, along with Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow and Michael Mayer. The veteran's next chance to make his Raiders debut will come Saturday versus the Rams.

No training camp restrictions
Coach Josh McDaniels noted that there are no restrictions on Garoppolo (foot) to start training camp, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
That said, McDaniels indicated that the Raiders would handle the QB as they would any player coming off an injury, which suggests that Garoppolo's practice reps will be managed to a degree in the coming weeks. The 31-year-old, who signed a three-year, $72.75 million deal with Las Vegas in March, is in line to take over as the team's starting signal-caller following the offseason release of Derek Carr. In the depth mix behind Garoppolo at the onset of training camp are Brian Hoyer, Aidan O'Connell and Chase Garbers.
Jul 23, 2023
Passes physical
Garoppolo (foot) passed his physical Sunday and is expected to be fully available for the start of training camp Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo spent the offseason recovering from left foot surgery, and there were some concerns about his availability to start 2023. The Raiders included a clause in the three-year deal Garoppolo signed in March that would allow the team to terminate his contract if he failed a physical. However, that conversation can likely be put to rest when the veteran quarterback is back on the field next week. If healthy, Garoppolo figures to be the frontrunner for the starting gig, while veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O'Connell compete for backup duties.
Jul 23, 2023
Expected to pass physical
Garoppolo (foot) is expected to pass his physical Sunday and get fully cleared for the start of training camp Tuesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Reports earlier in the spring surfaced indicating that despite signing Garoppolo to a three-year deal in March, the Raiders would be able to terminate his contract without any financial ramifications if he was unable to pass a physical while he recovers from left foot surgery. According to Fowler, Garoppolo has made strong progress since having the procedure in March, so he looks poised to get the green light from doctors to join the Raiders for the start of training camp. Assuming that's the case, Garoppolo should be locked in as Las Vegas' clear-cut starting signal-caller for 2023, as the Raiders didn't make any other additions to its quarterback room beyond journeyman 37-year-old Brian Hoyer and fourth-round rookie Aidan O'Connell, both of whom profile as backup options at the respective stages of their careers.
May 28, 2023
Could be released without penalty
Garoppolo's three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders contains a clause that would allow Las Vegas to release him without penalty if he's unable to pass a physical due to his surgically repaired foot, Tashan Reed and Vic Tafur of The Athletic report.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo fractured his left foot while playing with the 49ers in early December, then underwent surgery in March, shortly after he finalized his contract with Las Vegas. According to a waiver and release clause in the deal, Garoppolo acknowledged the risk of further injury while continuing to play upon his return from surgery, and he also waived any responsibility on the part of the Raiders, who can terminate his contract with no further obligation or financial ramifications. The waiver becomes null and void if Garoppolo passes a physical at any point during the 2023 season, however. While the terms of the deal give the Raiders an easy out to move on from Garoppolo if his recovery doesn't proceed as anticipated, the team won't have much in the way of appealing alternatives. The Raiders are left with 37-year-old journeyman Brian Hoyer, fourth-round rookie Aidan O'Connell and 2022 undrafted free agent Chase Garbers as the other signal-callers on the roster, and Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Teddy Bridgewater and Jo
May 25, 2023
Recovering from March surgery
Garoppolo had foot surgery in March, shortly after signing with the Raiders, Tashan Reed and Vic Tafur of The Athletic report.
ANALYSIS
Coach Josh McDaniels didn't provide a timeline or details, though he told reporters Garoppolo's absence from spring practices was expected. The Raiders apparently discovered that the QB needed surgery during a physical exam, after he'd avoided going under the knife in December when he suffered the left foot fracture. The 31-year-old never returned from the injury last season but might've been able to do so had the 49ers won one more game and reached the Super Bowl. His new team is confident Garoppolo will be ready for Week 1, and it helps that both he and backup quarterback Brian Hoyer have played in McDaniels' offenses before.
May 25, 2023
Not practicing yet
Garoppolo (foot) hasn't been practicing and may be out until training camp, Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Josh McDaniels didn't say if Garoppolo had offseason surgery but did suggest that the quarterback's absence from OTA practices isn't any surprise to his new team, per Tashan Reed of The Athletic. While he avoided surgery on a broken left foot after suffering the injury in December, the 31-year-old never returned to action during the Niners' deep playoff run before signing a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Raiders in March. Brian Hoyer figures to get most of the first-team reps with Garoppolo not practicing, backed by rookie fourth-round pick Aidan O'Connell and 2022 UDFA Chase Garbers.
Mar 17, 2023
Contract with Las Vegas official
Garoppolo (foot) officially signed with the Raiders on Friday.
ANALYSIS
When the agreement was announced Monday, it was reported to be a three-year, $67.5 million contract with $34 million in guarantees, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. Garoppolo thus will be Las Vegas' No. 1 quarterback in the post-Derek Carr era for the Raiders. While Garoppolo currently is rehabbing from a broken left foot that he suffered Week 13 of last season, he'll be throwing to the likes of wide receivers Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers once the 2023 campaign kicks off in September.
Mar 13, 2023
Set to join Raiders
The Raiders are slated to sign Garoppolo, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Schefter, Garoppolo's looming deal with the Raiders is a three-year, $67.5 million pact that includes $34 million guaranteed. In his new locale, Garoppolo is in line take over Las Vegas' starting QB slot, which had been vacated by the departure of Derek Carr, who is now with the Saints. In the process, Garoppolo is reunited with Josh McDaniels, who worked with the signal-caller earlier in his career, while the two were both with the Patriots.

Run in Bay Area likely over
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that he doesn't expect Garoppolo (foot) to be a member of the 49ers for the 2023 season, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
It's been a whirlwind year for Garoppolo, who was shopped last offseason with the 49ers set to move on to 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance under center. But Garoppolo's health was in limbo due to his recovery from surgery on his right throwing shoulder, and he eventually remained with the team after interested organizations settled their respective quarterback situations. When Lance suffered a season-ending right ankle injury Week 2, Garoppolo was pressed into action and held on to the role until he suffered a broken left foot Week 13, which allowed for the emergence of seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy (elbow). While both Lance and Purdy enter this offseason with health concerns, San Francisco's brass is comfortable with the pair moving forward, meaning Garoppolo will be allowed to test free agency once March arrives.
Jan 28, 2023
Super Bowl return still possible
Garoppolo (foot) has already been ruled out for Sunday's NFC Championship Game, but the quarterback left the possibility open of returning for the Super Bowl if the 49ers advance, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo's rehabilitation from a broken foot has been progressing well -- despite his unavailability for Sunday's tilt against the Eagles -- with the quarterback's only limitation being his ability to sprint at full speed. The veteran signal-caller will need the 49ers to advance past Philadelphia on Sunday in addition to his foot to fully healing before Feb. 12 for him to suit up again this season. If that scenario unfolds and Garoppolo is good to go for the Super Bowl, he would likely be the backup to Brock Purdy given the latter's success this postseason.
Jan 27, 2023
Not returning Sunday
Garoppolo (foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's NFC Championship Game at Philadelphia, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo had a small chance to gain clearance for this contest after suffering a fracture in his left foot Week 13. However, he underwent an X-ray on Tuesday and proceeded to sit out all three practices ahead of Sunday's contest. The 49ers thus will need to advance to the Super Bowl for Garoppolo to have a chance to be active again this season. In the meantime, seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy will continue to lead San Francisco's offense, with Josh Johnson backing him up.
Jan 25, 2023
Not expected to practice this week
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Garoppolo (foot) isn't expected to practice ahead of Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Eagles, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo underwent an X-ray on Tuesday, and while the results of the test remain unclear, it appears like the veteran quarterback still needs some time before being cleared for game action. There were rumors earlier in the week that Garoppolo was making great strides and would have a chance to be the backup behind Brock Purdy against the Eagles, but it appears the former will remain sidelined for at least one more week with a broken left foot and attempt to get healthy for a potential Super Bowl matchup. In the meantime, Josh Johnson figures to continue operating as the No. 2 quarterback, while Purdy attempts to shake off a lackluster performance against Dallas in the divisional round.
Jan 23, 2023
Set for more tests Tuesday
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo will have an X-ray on his injured foot Tuesday, Eric Williams of FoxSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo broke his left foot in Week 13 and appears to be in the final stages of rehab, as he resumed work on a side field during practice in advance of the divisional-round matchup against Dallas. The veteran quarterback will undergo more tests Tuesday to confirm his progress, but Shanahan added that he'd be very surprised if Garoppolo was cleared for the NFC Championship Game. Meanwhile, Brock Purdy will continue to lead the 49ers' offense, while Josh Johnson operates as the backup, but if the 49ers defeat the Eagles, Garoppolo may be able to serve as the primary backup in a potential Super Bowl matchup, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
Jan 20, 2023
Not returning Sunday
Garoppolo (foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's divisional-round contest against the Cowboys, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Having said that, coach Kyle Shanahan told David Lombardi of The Athletic on Friday that Garoppolo was able to resume working out on the side at practice this week, while adding there's an "outside chance" the quarterback is active if the 49ers advance to the NFC Championship Game. Garoppolo has entered the later stages of his recovery from a broken left foot that he sustained Week 13 against the Dolphins, missing the last six games as a result. In the meantime, San Francisco's offense will continue to be directed by Brock Purdy, with Josh Johnson backing up the rookie seventh-round pick.
Jan 6, 2023
Could be back late in playoffs
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Garoppolo (foot) remains on track to be available late in the playoffs, if the 49ers are still alive, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Based on Shanahan's comments, a return in the NFC Championship Game or the Super Bowl would seem to be a realistic outcome for Garoppolo, who has recently been cleared to resume putting some weight on the left foot he fractured Dec. 4. Because he was able to avoid surgery to address the injury, Garoppolo has a chance to play again in the postseason, though given the length of his layoff in addition to how well rookie veteran Brock Purdy has performed in his stead, the 31-year-old veteran may not be guaranteed to get his job back once he's medically cleared. Even if that's the case, having a battle-tested quarterback like Garoppolo available off the bench in a high-pressure playoff setting would still be a welcome development for the Niners.
Dec 24, 2022
Cast removed
Garoppolo (foot) has had his cast removed and now will be in a walking boot for at least the next week, Fox's Jay Glazer reported on Saturday's pregame show.
ANALYSIS
The Niners will examine Garoppolo again after he can shed the walking boot, with the hope that he can play in the playoffs. It's not a lock that he'll replace Brock Purdy even if healthy, but the team would like to have that option.
Dec 9, 2022
Won't be placed on IR
General manager John Lynch said Friday that Garoppolo (foot) is not a candidate to be placed on IR, Cam Inman of the Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers have already utilized six of eight maximum activations off IR, and with Elijah Mitchell (knee) hopeful for a playoff return, the team has little maneuvering room left. Lynch also said it's "highly unlikely" Garoppolo plays again this season, echoing coach Kyle Shanahan during his Wednesday press conference. Garoppolo is working his way back from a broken left foot, and as the injury doesn't require surgery, it appears there's at least a possibility he could return during the playoffs as long as he avoids any setbacks. Brock Purdy takes over as San Francisco's starting quarterback for at least the time being.
Dec 7, 2022
Unlikely to return for playoffs
Coach Kyle Shanahan isn't optimistic about Garoppolo (foot) returning during the playoffs, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers are in good position to qualify even with backup Brock Purdy taking over under center, but it doesn't sound like they'll be counting on Garoppolo, who only has an "outside chance" to be ready by late January according to Shanahan. The good news for Garoppolo is that he avoided a Lisfranc injury and ligament damage, with his recovery from a broken foot expected to take around two months. Ad suggested Garoppolo might be able to return in 7-to-8 weeks if things go well, which would line up with a return for the divisional or conference championship round of the playoffs. Getting there won't be an easy task now that the Niners are down to their third starting QB of the season.
Dec 6, 2022
Avoiding foot surgery
Garoppolo won't need surgery on his broken left foot, which has been confirmed to not be a Lisfranc injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. If his recovery goes well, Garoppolo may be able to return in 7-to-8 weeks.
ANALYSIS
This is the first indication that Garoppolo isn't out for the season and instead could be a candidate to be available for the 49ers at some point in the playoffs. The divisional round of the playoffs lines up with the seven-week mark reported by Schefter, but as long as Garoppolo is in recovery mode, rookie seventh-round pick Brock Purdy will be San Francisco's starting quarterback, with Josh Johnson backing him up after the team signed him off the Broncos' practice squad.
Dec 5, 2022
Still undergoing tests on foot
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Garoppolo continues to undergo testing on his broken left foot, but there's a growing belief that the quarterback avoided a Lisfranc injury, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo made an early departure from Sunday's game against the Dolphins and needed a cart to get to the locker room. Afterward, he was diagnosed with a fractured foot that's expected to require season-ending surgery, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. Having said that, until the extent of the injury is known, Garoppolo's status is in some limbo. In the meantime, the 49ers will entrust the offense to rookie seventh-round pick Brock Purdy, who complete 25 of 37 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 33-17 win. As for the rest of the signal-callers on San Francisco's roster, Trey Lance (ankle) remains on injured reserve, while Jacob Eason is on the practice squad, so moves likely will be made in the coming days to bolster the position.
Dec 4, 2022
Ruled out for season
Garoppolo sustained a broken foot Sunday against the Dolphins and will miss the remainder of the season, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo exited Sunday's game on the 49ers' first possession and had to be carted to the locker room. He'll require surgery to address his broken foot and will be unavailable for the final five games of the year. The 31-year-old completed 67.2 percent of his pass attempts for 2,437 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions while rushing 23 times for 33 yards and two scores over 11 appearances during the regular season. Brock Purdy stepped in as a replacement during Sunday's game and led the 49ers to a win, and he's in line to serve as the team's starting quarterback down the stretch. However, coach Kyle Shanahan also said Sunday that the team will likely also need to bring in another quarterback.
Dec 4, 2022
Ruled out Sunday with foot injury
Garoppolo won't return to Sunday's contest against the Dolphins due to a left foot injury, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
What was initially called an ankle issue for Garoppolo now has been reclassified by the 49ers. In any case, the severity of the injury isn't known, but Brock Purdy at least will direct the team's offense for the rest of Week 13. Garoppolo's status for next Sunday's matchup with the Buccaneers may become clearer in the coming days.
Dec 4, 2022
Picks up ankle injury
Garoppolo was forced out of Sunday's game versus the Dolphins due to an ankle injury.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo absorbed a big hit on a sack on the 49ers' first possession of the contest and needed a cart to go to the locker room, where he officially was diagnosed. With Trey Lance still firmly in the midst of his recovery from a fractured right fibula and ligament disruption in his right ankle, Garoppolo will hand over the offense to seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy.
Nov 30, 2022
Good to go
Garoppolo (knee) is practicing without limitations Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Listed as full participant to start the week, Garoppolo will make the start this Sunday against Miami in a game that should be a higher-scoring one than the 49ers' norm. The big injury question for San Francisco this week is at running back, where Elijah Mitchell (knee) is out for the next couple months and Christian McCaffrey (knee) is uncertain to play. If McCaffrey is sidelined, it could work in Garoppolo's favor from a fantasy perspective, though head coach Kyle Shanahan typically isn't one to completely write off his running game.
Nov 28, 2022
Should practice Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Garoppolo (knee) made it out of Sunday's win against the Saints "OK" and will be able to practice Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo endured one sack and six quarterback hits Sunday, one of which was a roughing the passer penalty when he took a shot to his left knee early in the third quarter. He didn't miss a snap and completed 26 of 37 passes for 222 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions while rushing four times for four yards. Afterward, Garoppolo told Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle that he was dealing with soreness in the knee in question, which Shanahan reiterated Monday. Still, it appears Garoppolo will be fine moving forward.
Nov 27, 2022
Dealing with sore knee after win
Garoppolo completed 26 of 37 pass attempts for 222 yards and a touchdown while adding four yards on four rushing attempts in Sunday's 13-0 win over New Orleans.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo stated after the game that he is dealing with a sore left knee after taking a late hit to the area in the second half of the blowout win, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The 30-year-old was able to finish the game and shouldn't miss time, but his name could pop up on the injury report once Week 13 commences. Garoppolo also experienced good fortune on the field when he had an early interception reversed by a defensive penalty, followed by his lone touchdown coming on a deflection off of a defender that landed safely in Jauan Jennings's hands in the back of the end zone. The end result was another solid performance from Garoppolo in a 49ers' win, something the both parties are hoping to repeat against a red-hot Miami squad on Sunday.
Nov 22, 2022
Four touchdowns against Arizona
Garoppolo completed 20 of 29 passes for 228 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in Monday's 38-10 win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo topped two passing touchdowns in a regular season game for the first since Week 6 of the 2020 campaign. He found Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle each for a pair of scores, which came from seven, 39, 13 and 32 yards. Garoppolo was denied a bigger game from a yardage perspective by game script, as he attempted only eight passes in the second half and was held out of a majority of the fourth quarter. While this was an outlier performance for Garoppolo, he does have multiple touchdown throws in five of his last six games.
Nov 14, 2022
Scores rushing TD in win
Garoppolo completed 19 of 28 pass attempts for 240 yards and rushed five times for three yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 22-16 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo failed to throw for a touchdown for the first time this season, but he punched in a rushing score from one yard out on his third quarterback sneak of the game. The veteran signal-caller has been fairly consistent in 2022 -- contrary to what we've seen in previous years -- and he just got more weapons back from injury following the bye week. Garoppolo's high floor makes him a great bye week fill-in for Week 11 when the 49ers take on the Cardinals next Monday.
Oct 30, 2022
Nearly perfect against Rams
Garoppolo completed 21 of 25 pass attempts for 235 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 31-14 win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was nearly perfect against a Rams defense loaded with talent, moving the ball with ease and even taking the top off the secondary on a couple of well-placed deep shots. The 30-year-old had a touchdown vultured by new teammate Christian McCaffrey on a halfback pass to Brandon Aiyuk, so fantasy managers will have to live with the "hockey assist" on a would-be third score. Seemingly unwanted by both his team and fantasy managers to begin the year, Garoppolo has quietly put up strong results with 1,691 passing yards and 11 touchdowns to four interceptions through seven games (six starts) heading into the upcoming bye week. Jimmy G and the 49ers will resume play against the Chargers on Nov. 13.
Oct 23, 2022
Goes over 300 yards in loss
Garoppolo completed 25 of 37 pass attempts for 303 yards with two touchdowns and two turnovers in Sunday's 44-23 loss to Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo continued his career-long struggles against the Chiefs, falling short here after losing to Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LIV. From a fantasy perspective, the veteran quarterback has produced well while playing from behind in his team's last two blowout losses. Even with the recent increased volume, Garoppolo's limitations as a downfield passer dampens any appeal heading into a matchup against a tough Rams defense next Sunday.
Oct 16, 2022
Airs it out in losing effort
Garoppolo completed 29 of 41 pass attempts for 296 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 28-14 loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
One of Garoppolo's two turnovers wasn't entirely his fault, as it was essentially a failed Hail Mary at the end of the first half. The 30-year-old did miss badly on his second pick, and also airmailed an open George Kittle in the end zone in the second half. Garoppolo did post his best fantasy point total through four starts this season, so there was a silver lining from a fantasy perspective. Garoppolo may be asked to throw 40-plus times once again if the 49ers fall behind early to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs next Sunday.
Oct 9, 2022
Tosses two TDs in win
Garoppolo completed 18 of 30 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 37-15 win over the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
It's the first time this season Garoppolo has tossed multiple TDs, as he hit Tevin Coleman in the first quarter for a nine-yard score before finding Deebo Samuel in the third on a four-yard strike. Garoppolo has increased his passing yards total every week since taking over from Trey Lance (ankle), giving him plenty of momentum heading into a Week 6 meeting with the Falcons.
Oct 3, 2022
Plays game manager in Week 4 win
Garoppolo completed 16 of 27 passes for 239 yards and one touchdown in Monday's 24-9 win over the Rams. He added three yards on one rushing attempt.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was credited with a 57-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel in the second quarter, though Deebo did the vast majority of the work after catching a short pass. The 49ers got back to their identity of winning with their defense and running game while relying on Garoppolo for little more than timely third-down conversions and game management. That role doesn't usually lead to much fantasy success, and in Week 5 Garoppolo will face a Panthers defense that's held three of four quarterbacks to under 210 passing yards this season.
Sep 26, 2022
Two costly turnovers in loss
Garoppolo completed 18 of 29 pass attempts for 211 yards, a touchdown, an interception and a lost fumble in Sunday's 11-10 loss to the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo got off to a good start Sunday, leading his team to an early touchdown on the second offensive drive of the game. That's about where the positive reviews end, as the popular quarterback looked like his old, mistake-prone self for the remainder of the contest. Garoppolo's night can best be summed up when he mishandled a snap early in the second half, then tried to save the broken play by throwing it right at a defender for a would-be pick-six had he not already stepped out of his own end zone for a safety prior to throwing the errant pass. To make matters worse for the 1-2 49ers, All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) went down on the aforementioned broken play, which does not bode well for Garoppolo and Co. heading into a Week 4 matchup against the Rams' vaunted defensive front on Monday Night Football.
Sep 18, 2022
Leads team to win off bench
Garoppolo completed 13 of 21 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown while adding five rushing yards and another TD on four carries in Sunday's 27-7 win over the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Taking over late in the first quarter after Trey Lance (ankle) was carted off the field with what Adam Schefter of ESPN reports is a season-ending injury, Garoppolo guided the 49ers to a relatively easy win thanks to a defense that kept the Seahawks' offense from scoring any points at all. San Francisco's decision to work things out with Garoppolo in the offseason rather than trading him is now looking prescient, and the veteran QB will have a week of first-team reps to prepare for a Sunday night clash with a Broncos defense that has held two straight opponents to 17 points or less.
Sep 1, 2022
Back at practice Thursday
Garoppolo participated in practice Thursday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
This marks Garoppolo's first appearance in drills since he agreed to a restructured one-year contract Monday and, in fact, his first practice since the 49ers' loss to the Rams in the NFC Championship Game back in January. In the meantime, he underwent surgery to address a torn capsule in his right throwing shoulder, from which he's since fully recovered. San Francisco also officially handed the reins of the offense to 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance, meaning Garoppolo now is the team's No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.
Aug 30, 2022
Could still be traded, eventually
Garoppolo is expected to stay with the 49ers as a backup after agreeing to an amended contract, but he and the team have discussed the option of waiving the no-trade clause if something develops, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports.
ANALYSIS
The no-trade clause doesn't make a trade impossible, it just means the deal needs to be agreeable to both player and team. That presumably would entail the Niners receiving compensation while Garoppolo got a starting job, which probably would only happen if a Super Bowl contender with a low-end backup QB lost its starter to injury for a prolonged period. It's not impossible, but the more likely scenario involves Garoppolo staying with the Niners as Trey Lance's backup before signing elsewhere next offseason.

Sticking with 49ers
Garoppolo and the 49ers have agreed to a restructured one-year deal to keep the QB with the team through the upcoming season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Schefter, the agreement contains no-trade and no-franchise tag clauses, ensuring that Garoppolo will stay with the 49ers this season to back up Trey Lance but have the ability to hit free agency afterward. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Garoppolo's base salary for 2022 has been lowered to $6.5 million fully guaranteed, with a chance for the veteran signal-caller to make nearly $10 million more in incentives.
Aug 23, 2022
Future remains unclear
Coach Kyle Shanahan said "any scenario is possible" when asked about Garoppolo's future with the 49ers on Tuesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers presumably still hope to trade Garoppolo before his contract becomes guaranteed Sept. 10. The team likely would release him if there's no trade to be had, but Shanahan won't tip his hand just yet. Garoppolo hasn't been practicing with the team or playing in preseason games.

Could land with Cleveland?
The Browns will consider acquiring Garoppolo if Deshaun Watson's six-game suspension is significantly increased upon appeal by the NFL, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
The range of potential outcomes for Watson at this point still includes a full-year ban. If that were to happen, the Browns would explore avenues to upgrade on backup QB Jacoby Brissett, with Garoppolo being the obvious option. The 49ers haven't been using Garoppolo in practice, instead moving on to Trey Lance as their starting quarterback. The team still hopes to trade Garoppolo but might ultimately end up releasing him.

Shows off arm Tuesday
Garoppolo (shoulder) went through a throwing regimen on a side field at the same time as the 49ers practiced Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
The roughly hour-long session included a variety of passes, including up to 50 yards in the air and numerous 25-yarders while rolling out to the left and right. GM John Lynch noted that Garoppolo is "doing a really job (of) building his stamina in his throwing program that was prescribed all along and working out really strongly and aggressively." After undergoing surgery on March 8 to address a torn capsule in his right throwing shoulder, Garoppolo reported to training camp last Tuesday and promptly passed a physical. At the same time, coach Kyle Shanahan announced the 49ers were moving on from Garoppolo to 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance under center, making the veteran QB available via trade.
Jul 26, 2022
Recovered from shoulder injury
Garoppolo passed his physical Tuesday, which means he has recovered from his shoulder injury, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo is healthy again after undergoing shoulder surgery March 8. The quarterback passing his physical will allow the 49ers to ramp up trade talks involving Garoppolo, but San Francisco has already made it clear that Garoppolo isn't part of the team's future, as the 49ers plan to build around 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance under center.
Jul 26, 2022
No future in San Francisco
Coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with Garoppolo (shoulder) on Tuesday and confirmed afterward that the 49ers have moved on to Trey Lance as their quarterback, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that Shanahan doesn't plan on Garoppolo practicing with the team this summer while they figure out details of a trade or release. Candidates for the 30-year-old's services include the Texans and Seahawks.
Jul 25, 2022
In line to report Tuesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan told Tim Kawakami on The TK Show on Monday that he expects Garoppolo (shoulder) to report to training camp Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
The entire 49ers roster is required to report to camp Tuesday, and Garoppolo will be among his current teammates, likely just for the typical physical and nothing else. Shanahan has made the transition from Garoppolo to second-year pro Trey Lance under center this offseason, which was helped by the fact Garoppolo spent most of it in recovery mode from March surgery to address his right throwing shoulder. Garoppolo resumed throwing in early July, and there's hope he'll receive medical clearance by mid-August. His representatives have been given permission to seek a trade, and per Matt Barrows of The Athletic interested teams include the Browns, Seahawks and Texans.
Jul 20, 2022
Granted permission to seek trade
The 49ers have given Garoppolo's agents permission to seek a trade, with the veteran QB now cleared to start practicing, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo may need more time to build up his arm strength after offseason surgery on his right shoulder, but he's at least been deemed healthy enough to practice. With the 49ers ready to turn to Trey Lance under center, a trade makes the most sense for all parties, though Garoppolo's considerably salary is another complicating factor on top of the shoulder surgery. Matt Barrows of The Athletic recently mentioned Seattle, Cleveland and Houston as possible destinations for the 30-year-old quarterback.
Jul 19, 2022
Hopes to be cleared mid-August
The expectation is that Garoppolo (shoulder) will be cleared to practice by mid-August, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Perhaps more important than being cleared to return to practice, Garoppolo would also be expected to pass a physical, which would result in an opportunity for a trade market. It has been previously reported by Matt Barrows of The Athletic that the Browns, Seahawks and Texans remain candidates who may look into acquiring the 30-year-old quarterback. If the 49ers are unable to find a deal they like, it will be interesting to see how they handle the starting situation between the veteran and last year's first-round pick, Trey Lance.
Jul 13, 2022
Reportedly resumes throwing
Garoppolo, who is bouncing back from shoulder surgery that he underwent in March, has reportedly resumed throwing, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
While that's a step in the right direction for the QB as training camp approaches, it remains to be seen when Garoppolo will be cleared to practice fully. As the 30-year-old's injury recovery progresses, look for the focus to soon shift on where he'll be playing in 2022. Though Garoppolo is still on the 49ers' roster, there remains an expectation that he's a candidate to be traded, with Trey Lance poised to handle the team's starting signal-caller duties this coming season. Per Barrows, the Browns, Seahawks and Texans are among the teams that could potentially look into adding Garoppolo.
Jun 25, 2022
Not throwing yet
Garoppolo (shoulder) is expected to resume throwing in the coming weeks, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers have maintained the veteran quarterback is still on pace to participate in training camp after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery in early March, but Garoppolo has yet to participate in any offseason OTAs as he continues to rehab from the injury. Second-year quarterback Trey Lance has taken all the starting reps in Garoppolo's absence and figures to be the frontrunner for the starting job, especially if the 30-year-old continues to miss time.
Jun 6, 2022
Excused from mandatory minicamp
The 49ers have excused Garoppolo (shoulder) from this week's mandatory minicamp, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
San Francisco's three-day mandatory minicamp will take place beginning Tuesday, but Garoppolo will be able to stay away from the team without incurring fines. The 30-year-old quarterback is recovering from right shoulder surgery and expected to resume throwing June, but his rehab will continue away from the 49ers' facilities. By all accounts 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance is primed for a chance at the starting role this season, and coach Kyle Shanahan said back in May that he expects Garoppolo to be traded this offseason.
May 24, 2022
Not with team for OTAs
Garoppolo (shoulder) wasn't spotted during the 49ers' OTA on Tuesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo continues to rehab his shoulder after offseason surgery, so it isn't surprising to see him absent from OTAs. The quarterback has been adamant that he'll be ready for training camp, but health is only one of his concerns this offseason, as the 49ers appear ready to give 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance a chance at earning the starting gig.
Apr 25, 2022
Expected to resume throwing in June
49ers general manager John Lynch said Monday that he expects Garoppolo (shoulder) to start throwing around late June, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery March 8 and despite reports saying he'd be sidelined for 4-to-6 months, he's been adamant that he'll be ready for training camp. However, health is only one concern for the quarterback this offseason, as the 49ers appear ready to give 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance a chance at taking the starting spot. "We believe in competition. We believe [Lance] is ready -- he is ready to show us, his teammates and the world he is ready," Lynch said Monday.
Apr 21, 2022
Expects to be ready for camp
Garoppolo (shoulder) hasn't resumed throwing but believes he'll be ready for training camp, Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo's availability for camp is no sure thing, with some reports suggesting a timeline of 4-6 months after he had shoulder surgery March 8. There's also the matter of which team he'll be playing for, as NFL.com's Kevin Patra recently reported that the Niners are still expected to trade Garoppolo this offseason. His recovery from surgery is a complicating factor, and there have also been whispers that the Niners are nervous about No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance. It sounds like Garoppolo has avoided setbacks thus far, as he said Thursday that he expects to resume throwing soon, per SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Apr 19, 2022
Continues to rehab shoulder
Garoppolo is slated to remain away from the 49ers' team facility, as he continues to rehab his surgically-repaired right (throwing) shoulder, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo, who underwent a March 8 procedure to repair a torn capsule in his shoulder, is not expected to throw until training camp in late July. The report notes that the QB has been rehabbing his injury in the Los Angeles area, while Garoppolo and the 49ers are said to be "on the same page" in terms of his offseason process. In Garoppolo's absence from on-field work, Trey Lance is in line to take most, if not all, of the team's first-team signal-caller reps, while Kevin Patra of NFL.com relays that it's still expected that San Francisco will move on from Garoppolo this offseason -- likely via a trade. If that indeed occurs, team's transition to Lance (the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft) would be cemented.
Mar 8, 2022
Undergoes shoulder procedure
Garoppolo had surgery on his right throwing shoulder Tuesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
As GM John Lynch told Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News last Wednesday, the procedure addressed "a capsule issue" in the back of Garoppolo's shoulder, which he injured during the 49ers' wild-card win at Dallas on Jan. 16. Garoppolo is expected to require approximately 16 weeks to complete his recovery, meaning he'll likely miss the entire offseason program, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Whether Garoppolo still is a member of the 49ers or finds himself with a different organization remains to be seen, but his successor already is in San Francisco in the form of 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance.
Mar 2, 2022
Shoulder capsule procedure on tap
GM John Lynch noted Wednesday that the procedure Garoppolo is slated to undergo will address "a capsule issue in the back of (the QB's) shoulder," Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Per the report, Garoppolo damaged ligaments in his throwing shoulder capsule's ball-and-socket joint during the 49ers' wild-card win over the Cowboys on Jan. 16. Garoppolo subsequently played through the injury during the team's postseason run, with Lynch relaying Wednesday that a decision to address the issue with a procedure was made "in the last couple of days." According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Garoppolo's looming post-surgery rehab is expected to keep the signal-caller from throwing for about 16 weeks, a timetable which suggests that Garoppolo will be able to throw by late June. Either way, Adam Schefter of ESPN indicates that Garoppolo's injury situation isn't expected to change the likelihood that he'll be traded in the coming weeks. With that in mind, Lynch suggested there is "significant interest" in Garoppolo from multiple teams.
Mar 1, 2022
Expected to undergo shoulder sugery
Garoppolo is expected to undergo shoulder surgery that would sideline him until this summer, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo suffered the injury during the wild-card win over Dallas, and at the time, he was also dealing with a thumb injury that was expected to need surgery. However, it appears that the former issue was more serious than previously thought and the opposite was true for the latter issue. Schefter also relays that the upcoming shoulder surgery isn't expected to impact Garoppolo's trade status and that it remains likely he'll be moved in March, noting multiple of teams have expressed "significant interest" in the veteran quarterback. Preliminary estimates suggest that Garoppolo is expected to resume throwing some time prior to July 4, which should give him plenty of time to get acclimated to a new team before the start of the 2022 campaign.
Feb 2, 2022
Set to have thumb checked out
Garoppolo is slated to see a specialist in the coming days in order to determine whether he will need surgery to address his right thumb issue, ESPN's Nick Wagoner reports.
ANALYSIS
The QB played the 49ers' final five games (including the playoffs) with a torn thumb ligament he suffered Dec. 23. At this stage Garoppolo is hoping to avoid a procedure, but if he does need surgery, his recovery will be something of interest to teams that might be interested in trading for the signal-caller, who is a candidate to be moved this offseason, which would pave the way for the franchise to transition to 2021 first-rounder Trey Lance. For his part, Garoppolo seems resigned to being dealt this offseason, noting Tuesday that he's "excited about the opportunities to come. I just want to go to a place where they want to win."
Jan 31, 2022
Getting surgery soon
Garoppolo is expected to have thumb surgery soon and likely will need four-to-six weeks to recover, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo started 15 of San Francico's 17 regular-season games in 2021, missing one contest in OCtober with a calf injury and one in December with a thumb ligament injury. He was also bothered by his shoulder late in the season, yet came one drive away from reaching a second Super Bowl in the past three years. Of course, Garoppolo has been more game manager than franchise QB, and he's now looking at an uncertain future with only one season remaining on his contract and the Niners able to clear up more than $25 million in cap space if he's released. With 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance waiting in the wings, it won't come as any surprise if Garoppolo is traded or released this offseason, though his recovery from surgery could be a minor complicating factor -- at least in terms of the timing. It does sound like he'll be healthy before training camp, and possibly for the start of the offseason program, be it in San Francisco or elsewhere.
Jan 30, 2022
Last game in SF?
Garoppolo completed 16 of 30 pass attempts for 232 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo technically performed better from a fantasy perspective this week compared to his previous two games where he failed to eclipse 200 passing yards and threw zero combined touchdowns. That said, the product fans saw on the field was horrific at times, with the veteran quarterback airmailing wide-open receivers and throwing some dangerous passes into coverage. Despite his struggles, the 49ers reached the NFC Championship Game and were one potential possession away from reaching the Super Bowl for the second time in three years with Jimmy G under center. As for the signal-caller's prospects moving forward, he is still under contract with San Francisco in 2022, but $25.5 million of his $26.9 cap hit can be eliminated due to the front-loaded nature of his deal. That means that the 49ers could save just over $25 million in cap space if they cut the veteran and hand the keys over to Trey Lance in 2022. This move makes sense from a strategic and economic standpoint, but we will have to wait and see what GM J

Full practice Wednesday
Garoppolo (thumb) practiced fully Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Since sitting out Week 17 due to a sprained thumb on his throwing hand, Garoppolo has led the 49ers to three consecutive wins, but he was banged up in the team's playoff opener at Dallas, emerging with a right shoulder sprain that impacted his practices reps last week. The second issue isn't showing up on the injury report this week, and neither issue is impacting his activity level on the field. As he prepares to face the Rams for a third time this season Sunday in the NFC Championship Game, Garoppolo's previous two matchups with L.A. resulted in 498 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions on 74.5 percent passing.
Jan 23, 2022
Provides bare minimum for vcitory
Garoppolo (thumb/shoulder) completed 11 of 19 pass attempts for 131 yards and one interception in Saturday's 13-10 win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo entered the contest at less than 100 percent, but he was able to brave the frigid conditions at Lambeau Field to get his team to the finish line. While the polarizing quarterback can be blamed for some dangerous throws that could have easily resulted in multiple interceptions, he certainly didn't get any help from his usually sure-handed receivers on some drive-ending drops in the first half. Garoppolo managed to skate by enough to let the stars around him advance the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game to face the winner of the Buccaneers and Rams on Sunday. As for next week, the veteran quarterback should easily check in as the cheapest DFS QB option after the field narrows to four teams.
Jan 20, 2022
Ready for divisional round
Garoppolo (shoulder/thumb) doesn't have a designation for Saturday's divisional-round game at Green Bay, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo again looked like his normal self while throwing at Thursday's practice, after which coach Kyle Shanahan spoke about the quarterback. During the media session, Shanahan told Matt Barrows of The Athletic that he believes Garoppolo's right thumb sprain is more bothersome than his sprained right shoulder. Still, Shanahan relayed that Garoppolo is "good enough to play" and start this weekend, according to Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News. In a Week 3 loss to the Packers, Garoppolo completed 25 of 40 passes for 257 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while losing his only fumble.
Jan 19, 2022
Practices in full Wednesday
Garoppolo (shoulder/thumb) was a full participant at Wednesday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports
ANALYSIS
Despite coming down with another injury this past Sunday in Dallas, Garoppolo gutted out a uncapped practice Wednesday and didn't appear worse for wear while throwing with sprains in both his right shoulder and thumb, per Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News. With his status all but confirmed as the 49ers' starting quarterback for Saturday's divisional-round matchup at Green Bay, Garoppolo will turn has focus to the Packers' ninth-ranked pass defense (219.1 yards per game).
Jan 18, 2022
To be limited Tuesday
Garoppolo (thumb/shoulder) will be limited at Tuesday's practice, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo added to his list of recent injuries during the 49ers' wild-card win at Dallas, suffering a sprained right shoulder "early in the second quarter," coach Kyle Shanahan told David Lombardi of The Athletic. While playing the past two games with a right thumb sprain, Garoppolo has been up and down, completing 39 of 57 passes (68.4 percent) for 488 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. But he's also done enough to lead San Francisco to back-to-back road victories -- also, Week 18 at the Rams -- and he's kicking off this week with an on-field appearance. How Garoppolo fares in practice Tuesday through Thursday likely will determine whether he heads into Saturday's divisional-round game at Green Bay with an injury designation.
Jan 17, 2022
Dealing with minor shoulder sprain
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo suffered a right shoulder sprain in the second quarter of Sunday's 23-17 wild-card win over the Cowboys, but the quarterback is expected to return to practice Tuesday, Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo has been playing through a torn ligament on the thumb of his throwing hand the past two weeks, but he looks as though he has a new injury to tend to ahead of the 49ers' divisional-round game in Green Bay this Saturday. Fortunately, based on the way Shanahan described the injury, Garoppolo doesn't look as though he'll be in any danger of sitting out this weekend, even if he happens to be limited in some capacity during practices Tuesday through Thursday. The 49ers were able to prevail in spite of Garoppolo nursing the injury for more than half of Sunday's contest, though he was only asked to throw 25 passes on the day after San Francisco raced out to a 23-7 lead after three quarters.
Jan 16, 2022
Survives late miscue Sunday
Garoppolo completed 16 of 25 passes for 172 yards and an interception in Sunday's 23-17 win over the Cowboys in the wild-card round.
ANALYSIS
The Niners leaned heavily on their ground game, with Elijah Mitchell and Deebo Samuel combining for nearly as many rushing yards as Garoppolo had passing yards, and with two more TDs. That led them to a 16-7 halftime lead, but the quarterback gave the Cowboys a glimpse of hope by tossing a fourth-quarter INT that to Dallas' final points of the night and a wild finish. Garoppolo indicated after the win his injured thumb hasn't gotten better or worse, per David Lombardi of The Athletic, and he would continue to play through the issue as long as the pain is manageable, but that could be a more difficult task next weekend in a divisional-round clash with the Packers if the weather at Lambeau Field is poor.
Jan 13, 2022
Logs full practice Thursday
Garoppolo (thumb) practiced in full Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo has been trending in this direction after appearing to handle a larger workload Wednesday than he did last week, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic. Still, Garoppolo was listed as limited on the 49ers' first practice report of this week. With a full session now under his belt, he upheld his thoughts from Wednesday, when he told Lombardi that his right thumb was "feeling great" after experiencing a "little" soreness in the wake of the team's Week 18 win against the Rams. Garoppolo thus is set to start Sunday's wild-card game at Dallas.
Jan 12, 2022
Limited in practice
Garoppolo (thumb) will be a limited practice participant Wednesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo came back from a one-week absence to lead the Niners to a dramatic overtime win Sunday in Los Angeles. His thumb didn't appear to be too much of an issue during the contest, but it's still something he'll need to manage throughout the playoffs for however long the Niners stay alive. They start off on the road in Dallas, with a 4:30 ET kickoff Sunday.
Jan 10, 2022
Practice regimen to remain same
Garoppolo (thumb) will follow a similar practice plan in advance of Sunday's wild-card game at Dallas as he did during Week 18 prep, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kyle Shanahan told Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area on Monday that the 49ers will have half-speed sessions Wednesday and Friday with a full practice Thursday, as they've been operating under for awhile. If Garoppolo has a similar regimen to last week, he'll be limited in all three as he continues to deal with a sprained right thumb. The issue didn't make an impact in the box score during Sunday's overtime win at the Rams, with the quarterback completing 23 of 32 passes for 316 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while playing all 70 offensive snaps. Shanahan added that Garoppolo came out of the game fine on the health front, so he shouldn't have a problem being able to play this coming weekend.
Jan 9, 2022
Gutsy effort in win
Garoppolo (thumb) completed 23 of 32 pass attempts for 316 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday's 27-24 overtime win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo seemed like a longshot to suit up after tearing a ligament in the thumb of his throwing hand just two weeks ago. Head coach Kyle Shanahan rolled his starter back out there in a must-win scenario, and while it was rocky at times, the end result was an overtime win on the back of multiple clutch drives from Jimmy G and the rest of the offense. The polarizing quarterback finishes with solid results of 3,810 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions on 69 percent passing while chipping in three more rushing scores. Trey Lance may be the future of the 49ers, but it appears to be all systems go for Garoppolo against the Cowboys in next week's playoff matchup.
Jan 9, 2022
Suiting up in Week 18
Garoppolo (thumb) is active for Sunday's game at the Rams, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
After taking a seat Week 17 due to a sprained right thumb, Garoppolo was able to get back on the practice field Wednesday and thereafter demonstrate that he could make the throws necessary to lead the 49ers offense effectively. Coach Kyle Shanahan likely considered the must-win nature of Sunday's contest, too, as San Francisco requires a victory to ensure a playoff berth. On Fox NFL Sunday's broadcast, Jay Glazer reported that Garoppolo was slated to start and not yield any reps to rookie Trey Lance, so it appears the status quo from Weeks 7-16 will return to the fore. During that 10-game stretch, Garoppolo averaged 256.9 yards on 68.7 percent passing, tossed 14 touchdowns versus eight interceptions and tacked on two more scores on the ground.
Jan 9, 2022
Another positive report
Fox's Jay Glazer confirmed on their Sunday pregame show that Garoppolo (thumb) is expected to start and not share duties with Trey Lance in Sunday's game against the Rams.
ANALYSIS
What the Niners plan and what actually happens could be two different things - Garoppolo will have to demonstrate that his ability to throw isn't compromised to stay in the game. But this report confirms that the Niners view him as their best chance to win this must-win game to make the playoffs.
Jan 9, 2022
Expected to draw Week 18 start
Garoppolo (thumb) is expected to start Sunday's game against the Rams, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network and Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area report.
ANALYSIS
Adam Schefter of ESPN previously relayed that the 49ers were leaning toward going with Garoppolo, who was inactive in Week 17, in Sunday's 4:25 ET contest. The QB is officially listed as questionable after practicing in a limited fashion this past week and it's worth noting that San Francisco didn't promote a signal-caller from the practice squad in advance of Week 18 action, leaving Garoppolo and Trey Lance as available options versus Los Angeles. Rapoport adds that players who saw Garoppolo -- who is dealing with a right thumb injury -- throw in practice indicated that he looked normal when throwing the ball.
Jan 8, 2022
Likely to start Sunday
The 49ers are leaning toward starting Garoppolo (thumb) on Sunday at the Rams, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo split reps with rookie first-rounder Trey Lance while working as a limited practice participant all week. The 49ers need to win Sunday in order to guarantee a spot in the playoffs, so it appears Garoppolo showed enough progress with the Grade 3 sprain in his right thumb to be available to the offense. When he faced the Rams back in Week 10, he completed 15 of 19 passes for 182 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in a 31-10 victory.
Jan 7, 2022
Deemed questionable, looking good
Garoppolo (thumb) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams, after making it through three limited practices without any setbacks this week, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Reports from San Francisco beat writers have been positive across the board, with Garoppolo seemingly trending toward a return after missing the Week 17 win over Houston. The 49ers have a ton on the line this weekend, as a loss combined with a Saints win over the Falcons would leave San Francisco out of the playoffs. Per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com, Kyle Shanahan acknowledged Friday afternoon that Garoppolo had a good week of practice, but the 49ers coach stopped short of saying the veteran QB would play, declining to name his starter for Week 18. Should they ultimately determine Garoppolo isn't healthy enough to start, the 49ers will turn to rookie QB Trey Lance ahead of Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff.
Jan 6, 2022
Puts in another limited session
Garoppolo (thumb) was limited at practice Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo has opened Week 18 prep with back-to-back capped sessions as he attempts to see if he's able to play through a Grade 3 UCL sprain and fracture in his right thumb. According to both David Lombardi of The Athletic and Matt Barrows of The Athletic, Garoppolo seemed to be his normal self, throwing more passes than he did Wednesday, with some of them going 35-to-40 yards downfield. Garoppolo may enter the weekend as questionable to play at the Rams, but even if coach Kyle Shanahan knows Garoppolo will reclaim the starting role from rookie Trey Lance, he won't let the decision be known until Sunday, per Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area.
Jan 5, 2022
Returning to practice
Garoppolo (thumb) will return to practice Wednesday as a limited participant, after his throwing session Tuesday went well, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kyle Shanahan had good news to share with the media before practice Wednesday, though it doesn't necessarily mean Garoppolo will be back in action Sunday against the Rams. Rookie Trey Lance played much better in his second NFL start than in his first, completing 16 of 23 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns (plus one INT) in Sunday's 23-7 win over the Texans. Even so, Shanahan has been clear about his desire to have Garoppolo under center if/when he's healthy enough to play.
Jan 2, 2022
Takes seat in Week 17
Garoppolo (thumb) is listed as inactive Sunday against the Texans, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Since emerging from a Week 16 loss at Tennessee with a Grade 3 UCL sprain and fracture in his right thumb, Garoppolo hasn't thrown, let alone practiced in any capacity. Having said that, the 49ers are hopeful he'll recover enough to be available for a key Week 18 road matchup with the Rams. While he takes a seat for the second time this season, Garoppolo will hand over the offense to rookie first-round pick Trey Lance, who has racked up 354 yards through the air, 137 more yards on the ground and four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) in five games, including a spot start Week 5.

Could return Week 18
Garoppolo (thumb), who is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Texans, is not expected to play but the 49ers are optimistic he could return Week 18 against the Rams, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Trey Lance looks set to start Sunday against Houston as a result. Prior reports indicated that Garoppolo suffered a fracture and Grade 3 UCL tear of his right thumb in last week's loss to Tennessee, so he'll need to show progress next week in practice to return for the regular season finale.
Dec 31, 2021
Expected to sit out Week 17
The 49ers list Garoppolo (thumb) as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Prior reports indicating that Garoppolo suffered a fracture and Grade 3 UCL tear of his right thumb in last week's loss to Tennessee along with head coach Kyle Shanahan's pessimistic comments about the quarterback's health in recent days all seemed to point to the 30-year-old likely sitting out Sunday, so the doubtful designation comes as little surprise. Per David Lombardi of The Athletic, Shanahan relayed Friday that the 49ers deliberately held Garoppolo back from throwing and practicing this week to afford him more healing time. Garoppolo is scheduled to throw Saturday, which should provide the team with a better sense of whether or not he'll be available for Sunday's game. Even if Garoppolo checks out fine in the throwing session and the 49ers forgo adding another quarterback to the roster, he may only be active as an emergency backup option behind rookie Trey Lance, who took all the first-team reps in practice this week and looks primed to receive his second career start.
Dec 31, 2021
Not practicing
Garoppolo (thumb) isn't practicing Friday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Another absence for Garoppolo has Trey Lance trending toward his second NFL start, with the first being a 17-10 loss at Arizona back in Week 5. The rookie will get an easier draw if he gets the nod this Sunday, as the 49ers are hosting the 4-11 Texans and now have TE George Kittle in the lineup.
Dec 30, 2021
Idle for second straight practice
Garoppolo (thumb) sat out Thursday's practice, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Branch, Garoppolo was in attendance for the workout, but he wasn't in uniform and was seen speaking with a team doctor before retreating to the weight room. The consecutive absences from practice don't inspire much confidence that Garoppolo will be ready to go for Sunday's game against the Texans while he contends with what head coach Kyle Shanahan classified as a Grade 3 UCL sprain of the quarterback's right thumb. Rookie Trey Lance directed the first-team offense Wednesday and Thursday and looks to have the edge on the Week 17 starting nod, though a final decision likely won't be made until the 49ers have a chance to evaluate Garoppolo on Friday.
Dec 29, 2021
Doesn't practice Wednesday
Garoppolo (right thumb) was held out of practice Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to the session, coach Kyle Shanahan told Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News that a 49ers trainer was determining whether Garoppolo could practice. If Garoppolo was unable to do so, they'd do the same pre-practice drill Thursday. Shanahan also spoke of the nature of Garoppolo's injury, calling it a Grade 3 sprain of the UCL in his right thumb that "pulled off a fleck of the bone," per Inman. Hence the report of a fracture in the quarterback's thumb Monday. According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, Garoppolo won't require surgery and has a shot to suit up Sunday against the Texans, which the QB himself mentioned during media availability Wednesday. In order to so, Garoppolo may have to log at least a limited session before week's end. If Garoppolo ends up sidelined for Week 17, rookie first-round pick Trey Lance would earn the second start of his career.
Dec 27, 2021
Has sprain, fracture in thumb
Garoppolo sustained a UCL tear and fracture in his right thumb during Saturday's 20-17 loss at Tennessee, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo's injury is gaining more clarity by the hour after coach Kyle Shanahan told Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site Monday that the quarterback sprained his thumb when he took a sack this past weekend. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the fracture actually is a chipped bone, placing his status in question for Sunday's game against the Texans. San Francisco's medical staff is slated to evaluate Garoppolo's thumb again Wednesday, but based off Shanahan's comments his ability to throw appears to be compromised, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic. If Garoppolo is unable to play this weekend, rookie first-rounder Trey Lance would be in line for his second start and sixth appearance overall.
Dec 27, 2021
Sprains thumb, iffy for Week 17
Garoppolo didn't practice Monday after head coach Kyle Shanahan disclosed the quarterback suffered a right thumb sprain when he was sacked late in the first half of San Francisco's 20-17 loss to Tennessee in Week 16, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Since the 49ers played a Thursday night game Week 16, the team's practice session Monday isn't an official one. As a result, information on the extent of Garoppolo's participation in practice won't be known until the 49ers release their first official Week 17 report Wednesday. At the moment, Garoppolo availability for Sunday's matchup with the Texans is looking iffy, a less-than-ideal development while the 49ers look to maintain position in the wild-card race with two weeks to play. Rookie signal-caller Trey Lance could take some first-team reps in practice over the next few days if the 49ers have any concern about Garoppolo's thumb as the Week 17 contest approaches.
Dec 23, 2021
Mixed bag in primetime loss
Garoppolo completed 26 of 35 passes for 322 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the 49ers' 20-17 loss to the Titans on Thursday night. He also rushed once for three yards.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo played a solid first half overall, but his late first-quarter interception in the end zone would prove to be critical by night's end. The veteran signal-caller then committed a second critical gaffe in the third-quarter when he was picked off by Amani Hooker at his own 39-yard line, which the veteran returned to the 21 to set up a touchdown four plays later. Garoppolo partly made up for the pair of turnovers with a 56-yard pass to Deebo Samuel with 3:42 remaining that was followed by a two-yard scoring toss to Brandon Aiyuk two plays later, but he didn't get the ball back until four seconds remained following a Titans' go-ahead field goal. The performance snapped a two-game streak without an interception for Garoppolo, who now has 10 through 14 games. His next opportunity to right the ship and attempt to refortify San Francisco's postseason chances comes in a Week 17 home battle against the Texans a week from Sunday.
Dec 19, 2021
Efficient outing against Atlanta
Garoppolo completed 18 of 23 pass attempts for 235 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-13 win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo continued his bounce-back season with another efficient outing while leading his team to victory. The 29-year-old performs well when the rushing attack is clicking and he can look downfield on designed play-action calls. We saw that proven formula in action Sunday, as the 49ers rushed 32 times for 162 yards and three touchdowns, resulting in a double-digit yards per attempt mark for Garoppolo for the fourth time this season (10.2 YPA today). This Thursday's opponent, the Tennessee Titans, own a top-five rush defense while struggling against the pass, so it will be interesting to see if the 49ers attempt to establish the run or let Garoppolo start slinging it around early.
Dec 12, 2021
Comes up big in OT win
Garoppolo completed 27 of 41 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 26-23 overtime win over the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
He also added three yards on his only carry. Garoppolo led the Niners to a 20-6 lead through three quarters, but after the Bengals stormed back to tie it up in the fourth and then kicked a field goal on the opening possession of OT, the veteran QB responded with some heroics of his own, leading San Francisco on a TD drive capped by a 12-yard toss to Brandon Aiyuk. Garoppolo has tossed multiple TDs in five of the last six games, compiling an 11:4 TD:INT over that stretch, and he could be poised for another big performance in Week 15 against the Falcons.
Dec 5, 2021
Mistake-prone in Sunday's loss
Garoppolo completed 20 of 30 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in Sunday's 30-23 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
The third quarter was a nightmare for Garoppolo. Not only was he sacked for a safety, he threw his second pick of the day on the Niners' subsequent possession and saw it returned into San Francisco territory to set up the winning TD for Seattle. The 30-year-old still tossed multiple touchdowns for the fourth time in the last five games while falling just shy of his fourth 300-yard performance of the year, but Garoppolo may need to be sharper in Week 14 against the Bengals.
Nov 28, 2021
Drives bus in win over Vikings
Garoppolo completed 17 of 26 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown with an interception in Sunday's 34-28 win over the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Three rushing TDs from Deebo Samuel (groin) and Elijah Mitchell accounted for most of the Niners' offense, but Garoppolo chipped in with a three-yard strike to Jauan Jennings just before halftime. The 30-year-old QB continued his recent run of efficiency, posting a YPA of 8.0 or better for the fifth straight game, and he'll look to stay sharp in Week 13 against the Seahawks.
Nov 21, 2021
Effective on 22 pass attempts
Garoppolo completed 16 of 22 pass attempts for 176 yards and two touchdowns against Jacksonville on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo and the 49ers passing attack probably could have done more damage if there had been a need, but the Jaguars never posed anything close to a threat in the 30-10 victory for San Francisco. Garoppolo should need to throw more often against Minnesota in Week 12. It looks like a good matchup on paper, particularly with Brandon Aiyuk (seven catches for 85 yards and one touchdown on seven targets Sunday) showing some life lately.
Nov 15, 2021
Throws two touchdowns
Garoppolo completed 15 of 19 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns in Monday night's 31-10 win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was a perfect eight-for-eight in the first half, with an eight-yard touchdown pass to George Kittle opening the scoring. The signal-caller remained efficient after halftime, then delivered the dagger with a 40-yard touchdown to Deebo Samuel on a fourth-and-six play to start the fourth quarter. Garoppolo has now played well in back-to-back wins, heading into Week 11's matchup versus the Jaguars with solid momentum.
Nov 8, 2021
Tops 300 yards in loss
Garoppolo completed 28 of 40 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns with an interception in Sunday's 31-17 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
For the second straight game Garoppolo threw for over 300 yards, and for only the second time in 2021 he tossed multiple TDs, making this performance one of his best of the season from a fantasy perspective. The return of George Kittle also provided immediate dividends as Garoppolo hit the tight end for a six-yard score just before halftime, the first points of the day for the 49ers. The QB could have trouble continuing his recent run of productivity in Week 10 against the Rams, however.
Oct 31, 2021
Scores two rushing touchdowns
Garoppolo completed 17 of 28 pass attempts for 322 yards and no passing scores or turnovers, adding four yards and two rushing touchdowns on five carries in Sunday's 33-22 win over Chicago.
ANALYSIS
It was an unusual stat line from Garoppolo, who now has three rushing touchdowns this year despite only contributing 30 total rushing yards (1.4 yards per carry). The usually turnover-prone quarterback (seven through five games) also did a great job of protecting the ball, faring much better than his rough outing in the rain against the Colts last week. Backup Trey Lance (knee) made his return from injury this week, but he did not enter the game as he had been earlier this year because head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted to take it easy on his rookie fresh off injury, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic. Perhaps the occasional play will be run for Lance with another week of rest, but it appears that Garoppolo has salvaged the starting job heading into a home matchup against the Cardinals next Sunday.
Oct 25, 2021
To remain starting QB
Garoppolo is expected to start Sunday's game at Chicago, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The playing conditions in San Francisco were less than ideal this past Sunday against the Colts, with heavy rain and wind impacting much of the contest. Garoppolo didn't fare well at all, completing 16 of 27 passes for 181 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while losing one of his two fumbles in the 30-18 loss. There was some uncertainty from coach Kyle Shanahan afterward about Garoppolo's health, but his balky right calf passed a checkup Monday morning, giving Shanahan confidence that Garoppolo will remain atop the depth chart, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic. Backup Trey Lance (knee) is in line to return to practice Wednesday, so the 49ers may soon have their QB alignment from the first three and a half games of the season (Garoppolo the starter, Lance mixing in occasionally).
Oct 25, 2021
Three turnovers in losing effort
Garoppolo (calf) completed 16 of 27 pass attempts for 181 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and two fumbles (one lost) in Sunday's 30-18 loss to the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was healthy enough following the team's bye week to start for the 49ers, while rookie Trey Lance (ankle) was ruled out earlier this week. The veteran option for San Francisco struggled mightily in tough playing conditions, turning the ball over in crucial comeback opportunities, ultimately costing the team any chance at victory. Heavy rain is no excuse for his poor play, as the quarterback starting for the opposition (Carson Wentz) was able to turn in a solid performance. We will have to see what the 49ers' banged up unit looks like closer to gameday next week, but given his poor performance, it wouldn't be surprising to see head coach Kyle Shanahan start Lance over Garoppolo if both quarterbacks are healthy for next week's tilt against the Bears.
Oct 22, 2021
Named starter for Sunday
Garoppolo (calf) will start Sunday's game against the Colts, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Trey Lance (ankle) is ruled out on the Friday injury report, while Garoppolo has no designation for the game. The veteran QB will suit up for the first time since Week 4, with Nate Sudefeld coming up from the practice squad to provide depth. Garoppolo returns to face the Colts, who have struggled against the pass this year with a 15:5 TD:INT and 7.4 net yards allowed per attempt (sixth worst).
Oct 21, 2021
Remains limited at practice
Garoppolo (calf) was limited at practice Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With back-to-back capped sessions following the 49ers' bye week, Garoppolo is making a play to take the field for the first time since the first half of the team's Week 4 loss to the Seahawks. As for rookie signal-caller Trey Lance, he hasn't practiced this week due to the left knee sprain he suffered while filling in for Garoppolo in Week 5. Coach Kyle Shanahan may determine the fate of both quarterbacks upon the release of Friday's injury report, but Garoppolo appears as if he'll be under center Sunday against the Colts.
Oct 20, 2021
Limited Wednesday
Garoppolo (calf) will be limited at Wednesday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
That's more than Trey Lance is expected to do, as the rookie quarterback isn't expected to be able to go Sunday against the Colts due to a sprained left knee, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. Coach Kyle Shanahan is taking it easy on Garoppolo to make sure he's as healthy as possible for his first in-game appearance since the first half of a Week 5 loss at Arizona. Garoppolo may have his practice limitations extend through Friday, at which point the 49ers will provide clarity on his potential to play Sunday.
Oct 18, 2021
Spotted at practice
Garoppolo (calf) is participating in the start of Monday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo hasn't played since Week 4 due to a bruised right calf, but coming off of a bye it looks like he could be nearing a return to the field. Meanwhile, rookie quarterback Trey Lance (knee) was not spotted Monday, perhaps indicating that Garoppolo has the best chance to start Sunday's upcoming matchup against the Colts. It was already anticipated that coach Kyle Shanahan would name Garoppolo the starter, even in the event that both he and Lance were available Week 7.
Oct 10, 2021
Expected to keep start when healthy
Garoppolo (calf), who has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's game against the Cardinals, is expected to remain the 49ers' starting quarterback if he's deemed fully healthy following the team's Week 6 bye, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has been consistent about Garoppolo being viewed as the team's starter since Trey Lance was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the spring, and the incumbent doesn't look like he'll lose his job even after sitting out Week 5 with the injury. That said, the team's investment in Lance hardly gives Garoppolo much job security, and it wouldn't be overly surprising if the team brass' stance changes if the rookie impresses in his first career NFL start Week 5. For his part, Garoppolo at least looks on track to be available coming out of the bye week, with Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports relaying that the veteran's right calf injury has a roughly "70 percent chance" of healing enough for him to be available Week 7 against the Colts.
Oct 8, 2021
Ruled out for Week 5
Garoppolo (calf) has been ruled out for Sunday against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Some figured Trey Lance would take over after a Week 6 bye, but now he'll get his first NFL start right before it. The timing does give Garoppolo a decent shot to avoid any further absences, with coach Kyle Shanahan maintaining that he still wants the veteran to be his starting quarterback when healthy. Of course, that's always subject to change if Lance does big things with his opportunity this Sunday against the Cardinals.
Oct 8, 2021
Not practicing, likely out Week 5
Garoppolo (calf) wasn't on the field for Friday's practice and appears unlikely to play Sunday against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Garoppolo's right calf injury kept him from practicing Wednesday and Thursday, general manager John Lynch suggested that Friday's session would be more critical to the quarterback's chances of playing this weekend. With Garoppolo destined to go down as a non-participant on the final injury report, however, he now looks set to miss the Week 5 matchup, paving the way for rookie first-round pick Trey Lance to pick up his first career start. The 49ers will provide an official designation for Garoppolo later Friday, and there's still a possibility he could be listed as questionable or doubtful rather than out if head coach Kyle Shanahan is leaving the door open for the veteran signal-caller to serve as an emergency backup to Lance.
Oct 7, 2021
Not present for practice
Garoppolo (calf) isn't on the field for Thursday's practice, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Though head coach Kyle Shanahan has thus far been unwilling to rule Garoppolo out for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, the quarterback said himself after exiting the Week 4 loss to the Seahawks that he expects to miss a couple of weeks, per Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News. Based on Garoppolo's consecutive absences at practice to begin Week 5 prep, any hope of him playing in Arizona seems to be dwindling. Trey Lance will direct the first-team offense for the second day in a row Thursday and is trending toward his first career start this weekend.
Oct 6, 2021
Not practicing, but improving
Garoppolo (calf) won't practice Wednesday, though 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said the quarterback's injury has improved, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan isn't ready to rule Garoppolo out for Week 5 against Arizona, as swelling in the QB's calf has subsided since Sunday night, per David Lombardi of The Athletic. He may still end up missing the game, in which case No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance would make his first NFL start.
Oct 4, 2021
To be examined again Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo has been diagnosed with a calf contusion, and the 49ers will evaluate him again Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo didn't play a snap after halftime in the 49ers' Week 4 loss to the Seahawks. A subsequent MRI has revealed the extent of his calf injury, and Shanahan added that if Garoppolo improves enough my mid-week, he may be able to suit up Sunday at Arizona, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. If he does get healthy enough to play, Garoppolo will push Trey Lance back to his backup role. On the other hand, Lance would be in line for his first NFL start if Garoppolo needs some time off.
Oct 3, 2021
MRI scheduled for Monday
Garoppolo (calf) didn't return after halftime in Sunday's loss to the Seahawks and will get an MRI on the injury Monday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo actually suffered the injury on the opening drive but was able to stay in the game until halftime. Rookie third-overall pick Trey Lance took over under center at halftime and would start against the Cardinals in Week 5 if Garoppolo can't go, though the starting job will remain in Garoppolo's hands if the MRI result reveals no significant damage and he's able to suit up in Arizona. Per Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus, Garoppolo anticipates that the injury will sideline him for a couple weeks.
Oct 3, 2021
Suffers calf injury
Garoppolo sustained a calf injury during Sunday's contest against the Seahawks, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo worked the entire first half, completing 14 of 23 passes for 165 yards, one touchdown and one interception. However, he handed over the offense to rookie first-round pick Trey Lance after halftime. It remains to be seen if Garoppolo will be able to get back on the field, as he was considered questionable to return.
Sep 27, 2021
Mixed results in crushing loss
Garoppolo completed 25 of 40 pass attempts for 257 yards, two touchdowns, an interception and a fumble lost in Sunday's 30-28 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
It was a tale of two halves for the 49ers' starting quarterback, as he was missing easy throws and holding on to the ball too long in an ugly first half. He mostly turned things around in the second half and led an unlikely comeback before Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams and Mason Crosby crushed San Francisco's hopes for a win in the final 37 seconds of the game. Garoppolo looked like he had returned to his 2019 form of above-average play over the first two games of the season, but he began to show some of the flaws that caused his team to mortgage its future and draft Trey Lance (one carry, one yard and a touchdown) with the third-overall pick this past offseason. The 29-year-old may still give the 49ers the best chance to win this season, but if he continues to make mistakes like he did in this one, we will start to hear rumblings for Lance to take over. For now, Garoppolo is expected to start in a pivotal NFC West matchup against the Seahawks next Sunday.
Sep 19, 2021
Scores through ground and air
Garoppolo completed 22 of 30 pass attempts for 189 yards and a touchdown, adding 20 yards and another touchdown on 11 carries in Sunday's 17-11 win over the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo didn't have as many big throws as he did in last week's win over the Lions, completing just one pass over 11 yards (a 40-yard strike to Deebo Samuel) against a tougher Eagles defense. The 29-year-old did bolster his stat line with a rushing touchdown when he took a quarterback sneak into the end zone for the eventual winning score. Rookie backup Trey Lance did not vulture a touchdown this week, and surprisingly, he did not even record a pass attempt or rush in a close victory. Garoppolo should be considered a mid-tier option heading into a matchup against the Packers on Sunday Night Football.
Sep 12, 2021
Returns to form in win
Garoppolo completed 17 of 25 pass attempts for 314 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 41-33 win over the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo's 2021 campaign got off to a horrid start when he fumbled away the first offensive snap of the game. The 29-year-old was unfazed by the faux pas, as he went on to complete his first nine passes of the game en route to a solid fantasy line. Most notably, Garoppolo went 2-for-2 and a touchdown on passes of 20-plus air yards, after going 1-for-11 with four interceptions on such throws over the course of the entire 2020 season. Perhaps the poor quarterback play we saw last year truly was due to the high-ankle sprain he tried playing through. Garoppolo is still not a high-end fantasy option, as his ceiling isn't particularly high and he will cede some stats to rookie Trey Lance (threw a passing touchdown) when he is brought in on special packages. The 49ers' quarterback duo will get a stiffer test on the road against the Eagles next Sunday.
Sep 8, 2021
Confirms starting gig
Garoppolo confirmed during Wednesday's media session that he's starting Sunday's game at Detroit, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "Now, it's official, I guess," Garoppolo added.
ANALYSIS
As the only incumbent quarterback on the 49ers, Garoppolo was favored to claim his usual role, even with Trey Lance putting up a valiant effort throughout the offseason, training camp and preseason. Then, after Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 draft, suffered a chip fracture in one of the fingers on his throwing hand in San Fran's exhibition finale, Garoppolo's path to the job was even clearer. The team teased Wednesday's announcement by listing Garoppolo as the No. 1 QB on its first unofficial depth chart of the season Tuesday, and he may even take all the reps under center Week 1 if Lance doesn't get healthy enough to suit up.
Sep 7, 2021
To top depth chart to begin season
Garoppolo was listed as the starting quarterback on the 49ers' first unofficial depth chart of the season Tuesday, Josh Dubow of the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
This is the first sign Garoppolo will open the 2021 campaign at the top of the depth chart, despite Trey Lance making a concerted effort throughout the preseason to dethrone the veteran. Unfortunately for Lance, he suffered a chip fracture in a finger on his right throwing hand in the team's exhibition finale, which was kept the rookie out of most drills over the past week. The third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft may still be incorporated in the game plan Week 1 and beyond, as was forecast in preseason Week 3, when Garoppolo and Lance alternated series and even snaps on certain possession. Still, Garoppolo is poised to be announced as San Fran's No. 1 QB on Wednesday, per Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News.
Aug 29, 2021
Scores on the ground
Garoppolo completed four of seven passes for 64 yards and rushed for a one-yard touchdown in Sunday's 34-10 preseason win over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo started and capped San Francisco's opening drive with a scramble into the end zone off a bootleg pass play. The signal-caller then got the Niners into scoring position on their second series, which rookie Trey Lance paid off with a two-yard touchdown rush after subbing in. As a passer, however, Lance completed just six of 13 attempts for 46 yards. At this stage, it seems Garoppolo will ultimately be named the team's starter for Week 1's matchup against the Lions, but as coach Kyle Shanahan showed Sunday, Lance may still be incorporated in special situations.
Aug 27, 2021
Draws start in preseason finale
Coach Kyle Shanahan relayed that Garoppolo will start Sunday's preseason finale versus the Raiders, though Trey Lance will be "mixed in" with the first team to some degree during the contest, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News notes, Shanahan was open about his intentions regarding the team's starting QB for Sunday's game, but declined to address who will get the nod in Week 1. At this stage, however, Garoppolo is the favorite to helm the team's offense versus the Lions on Sept. 12.
Aug 25, 2021
Remains favorite to start
Garoppolo remains the favorite to open the season as San Francisco's starting quarterback, though he and rookie Trey Lance split first-team reps Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kyle Shanahan continues to avoid naming a starter, though he talked Wednesday of utilizing quarterback substitutions similar to the Saints with Drew Brees and Taysom Hill over the past couple years. Shanahan has seemingly already made up his mind on a starter, and it appears to be Garoppolo based on how reps have been split throughout training camp and the preseason. However, the rookie Lance may still have some opportunities to see the field at the start of the regular season, though it's unclear exactly how Shanahan intends to employ the multi-quarterback strategy.
Aug 22, 2021
Mediocre in brief start
Garoppolo completed 3 of 6 pass attempts for 15 yards and an interception in Sunday's 15-10 preseason win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo got the start as expected, but only played for one series before giving way to rookie Trey Lance. The former was uncharacteristically inaccurate, most notably missing Deebo Samuel high on a crossing route that resulted in a pick. Garoppolo's best play actually came on a 10-yard scramble for a first down. Not much to take away here, as Garoppolo is still considered the favorite to begin the year as the starter, and both quarterbacks had bouts of inaccuracy in this one. Expect the playing time to even out a bit more in the 49ers' dress rehearsal against the Raiders next Sunday.
Aug 20, 2021
To play at least one quarter Sunday
Garoppolo likely will play "a quarter, a quarter and a half" Sunday at the Chargers, coach Kyle Shanahan told David Lombardi of The Athletic on Friday.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers and Chargers held a joint practice Friday, after which Shanahan made the declaration. Thus, it appears Garoppolo will get more than the one possession he led in San Francisco's preseason opener last Saturday versus the Chiefs. In that contest, he completed all three of his passes for 26 yards before handing the offense over to Trey Lance. During the aforementioned practice session Friday, Lance got live reps against another first-team defense for the first time as Shanahan continues to introduce the 2021 third overall pick to more and more high-profile snaps.

Completes all three passes
Garoppolo completed all three of his passes for 26 yards in Saturday's 19-16 preseason loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo started Saturday's preseason opener and played just one drive, connecting on three short passes before putting on the headset and watching Trey Lance -- the No. 3 overall pick -- and Josh Rosen finish the game under center. Lance had the play of the night with an 80-yard touchdown throw to Trent Sherfield on his second possession; however, the rookie completed just five of 14 passes for 128 yards and a score. Garoppolo seemingly still has the starting job for now, but his leash is short, and a strong end to the preseason by Lance will only increase the pressure.

Set to start Saturday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo will start Saturday's preseason opener against the Chiefs but will likely only handle one series, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo is listed as the starter on San Francisco's first unofficial depth chart, per Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News, and he remains to favorite to start Week 1 under center. As preseason action approaches, the question is how many opportunities rookie first-round pick Trey Lance will get to showcase his explosiveness, and whether Garoppolo can avoid making mistakes. After Garoppolo opens Saturday's exhibition match, Lance is expected to finish out the first half.

Enters camp with starters
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that the 49ers don't have an open competition at quarterback, adding that Garoppolo will work with the starters during training camp, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan made similar comments in early May, shortly after the 49ers picked QB Trey Lance third overall in the NFL Draft. In any case, the 21-year-old rookie may not be available Wednesday when the team holds its first practice of camp, as he still hasn't signed a rookie contract. Garoppolo may not have job security beyond September, but he is on track for the Week 1 start, leading an offense with TE George Kittle and WRs Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel.
May 3, 2021
Currently entrenched as starter
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Garoppolo "definitely is our starter right now" and that "there isn't a competition" between he and No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan called Garoppolo "a competitive dude" who he expects to benefit from "having someone to fire him up a little bit," while also denying reports that the 49ers are attempting to trade the 29-year-old. The coach also noted that he doesn't "believe Lance would be in a position to compete" when OTAs kick off, implying that the 20-year-old has a long way to go before pushing Garoppolo for the starting gig. Of course, Lance's draft pedigree all but guarantees he'll eventually get to showcase his talents under center, the only question being how long Garoppolo can hold him off. To that end, staying healthy will be just as crucial for Garoppolo as maintaining a quality level of play. The veteran signal-caller missed 10 games due to a high-ankle sprain last season, though Shanahan reiterated that he's since returned to full health.
May 2, 2021
Likely to remain in SF
The 49ers are expected to retain Garoppolo despite drafting quarterback Trey Lance with the third-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, ESPN's Nick Wagoner reports.
ANALYSIS
There were rumblings around the league regarding potential trades and landing spots for Garoppolo ever since San Francisco paid a king's ransom to move up from No. 12 to No. 3 in this year's draft. While that scenario remains a possibility, it seems unlikely after the club selected North Dakota State product, Trey Lance, with its coveted pick. The 20-year-old possesses tremendous upside due to his raw physical skills, but a lack of experience (just 17 games of starting experience in college) and the need to improve some weaknesses in his game (notably footwork and ball placement) creates the need for a trusted veteran quarterback in camp. Enter Jimmy G, who has performed more than adequately during his time in San Francisco, but an inability to stay healthy (just 25 starts over three seasons) was a leading cause in the team having to look for another option under center. That said, the 28-year-old should begin the 2021 campaign with a clean bill of health and a realistic shot at being the 49ers' starter Week

49ers acquire No. 3 overall pick
The 49ers acquired the No. 3 overall pick in April's draft from the Dolphins on Friday, potentially signaling that the team will acquire a quarterback to replace Garoppolo, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
San Francisco is dealing the No. 12 pick in April's draft, its 2021 third-round pick received as compensation for Robert Saleh's hiring by the Jets, and first-round selections in 2022 and 2023 in order to move up to No. 3 overall. Schefter notes that the 49ers do not have any immediate plans to trade Garoppolo, but with at least one of this year's top three quarterback prospects guaranteed to be on the board, the 29-year-old veteran's best-case-scenario may be to serve as a bridge option if he remains on the roster. If a prospect such as Zach Wilson, Justin Fields or Trey Lance indeed links with the 49ers, it will only be a matter of time before they enter the starting lineup.

Still wanted in San Francisco?
49ers GM John Lynch told the Eye Test for Two podcast he has no doubt Garoppolo (ankle) will be the team's Week 1 starter in 2021.
ANALYSIS
Lynch did stipulate "if he's injury-free" when he was asked about his commitment to Garoppolo, who missed 13 games in 2018 and 10 in 2020. There's been talk of the team pursuing Deshaun Watson, but it isn't clear the Texans will comply with their star QB's trade request, and even if they do, San Francisco can't match the draft picks Miami and New York have to offer. Garoppolo has two years remaining on his five-year, $137.5 million contract, with a dead-cap charge of only $2.8 million if he's traded or released this offseason. Lynch may expect Garoppolo to keep the starting job, but that doesn't mean the 49ers GM won't consider other options. Garoppolo should have plenty of time this winter and spring to recover from the high-ankle sprain that caused him to miss the second half of the 2020 campaign.

Won't play this week
Garoppolo (ankle) won't return for Week 17 against the Seahawks, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers designated Garoppolo to return from injured reserve at the beginning of Week 16, but that mostly seemed to be about getting him back on the practice field. Once the team was eliminated from playoff contention, there was never any suggestion Garoppolo might return for the final two weeks. While coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects Garoppolo to be the 49ers' starting QB in 2021, it won't come as any great surprise if the team pursues an upgrade. Garoppolo has two years remaining on his contract, scheduled for non-guaranteed base salaries of $24.1 million and $24.2 million in 2021-22, per overthecap.com. The dead-cap charge will be only $2.8 million if he's traded or released this offseason.
Dec 28, 2020
Not expected to play in Week 17
Garoppolo (ankle) isn't expected to be activated from IR in advance of Sunday's season finale against the Seahawks, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Assuming Garoppolo remains sidelined this week, he'll turn his focus to recovering from the significant right high-ankle sprain that derailed his 2020 season. When asked Monday whether Garoppolo will be the 49ers' QB in 2021, coach Kyle Shanahan said "I do believe Jimmy's going to be our quarterback next year." As for Week 17, C.J. Beathard is expected to draw the start against Seattle.
Dec 22, 2020
Returns to practice
Garoppolo (ankle) was designated to return from injured reserve Tuesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo will return to practice Tuesday, opening the 21-day evaluation window to be activated from IR. With the 49ers out of the playoff hunt, they weren't expected to bring back Garoppolo this season. However, Nick Mullens (elbow) is done for the season, and practice squad quarterback John Johnson is in COVID-19 protocol, leaving C.J. Beathard as the only healthy option for San Francisco. Even with the uncertainty in the quarterback room, coach Kyle Shanahan said he'd be very surprised if Garoppolo plays again this year, according to Wagoner.
Dec 20, 2020
Likely done for season
The 49ers don't plan on activating Garoppolo (ankle) from injured reserve before their Week 16 game against the Cardinals, and the quarterback appears increasingly unlikely to play again this season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo has been sidelined since Nov. 1 with a significant right high-ankle sprain, and though he avoided surgery to address the injury, the 29-year-old still has yet to resume practicing seven weeks later. Though Garoppolo could be cleared to get in some on-field reps next week, the 49ers already appear to have ruled him out from starting against the Cardinals, leaving the Jan. 3 season finale against the Seahawks as his last chance to suit up. However, with the 5-8 49ers on the brink of being eliminated from postseason contention, Garoppolo likely won't be activated -- even if medically cleared -- if there's little at stake in Week 17. Assuming Garoppolo is in fact shut down for the season, it could spell the end to his tenure with the 49ers, as San Francisco could cut him this offseason while taking only a modest $4.2 million hit to their salary-cap space.
Dec 14, 2020
Won't return this week
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo (ankle) won't play Sunday against the Cowboys and will be reevaluated next week, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan indicated Garoppolo has yet to be fully cleared by the medical staff, so it's too risky to consider a return to game action. According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, Shanahan also said it's "up in the air" whether Garoppolo retakes the field this season and noted the quarterback's high-ankle sprain was the "worst" suffered by San Francisco players this season. Nick Mullens has started the past five games for the 49ers, but C.J. Beathard could also be in the mix this week.
Dec 1, 2020
Could return late in campaign
Coach Kyle Shanahan is hopeful Garoppolo (ankle) will return for the "last couple weeks" of the season, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo hasn't suited up since Week 8, when he suffered his second (and a more significant) high-ankle sprain of the campaign. By Nov. 17, he had got rid of the walking boot from his right foot, but only this week will Garoppolo start to do individual work on a side field. Speaking of a potential return date, Shanahan noted "whether it's two games or one game or none," meaning a decision on Garoppolo's activation from IR may depend on the 49ers' odds to make the postseason.
Nov 17, 2020
Aiming for late-season return
Coach Kyle Shanahan is hopeful Garoppolo (ankle) returns at some point "later in the season," Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan noted Garoppolo has ditched the walking boot he's been wearing since suffering his second high-ankle sprain of the season back in Week 8. The 49ers return to action after their Week 11 bye on Sunday, Nov. 29 against the Rams, which lines up with the front end of his 4-to-6-week rehab timeline. That said, the team likely will be cautious with Garoppolo's recovery, which instead would mean he'd return -- if cleared -- for one of the final five contests of the campaign.
Nov 13, 2020
Surgery not the plan for now
Garoppolo has met with a foot specialist and confirmed that he won't need to undergo surgery to address his high-ankle sprain, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo's meeting with foot specialist Dr. Bob Anderson affirmed the advice of San Francisco's team doctors, so the signal-caller will continue to rest his ankle with the intention of testing it out for a possible return at a later date. High-ankle sprains normally carry a 4-to-6 week recovery timetable, and general manager John Lynch confirmed that if Garoppolo doesn't come along on schedule, surgery could come back into play as an option. In the meantime, Nick Mullens will start for the 49ers, with C.J. Beathard serving as his primary backup.
Nov 6, 2020
Likely to avoid surgery
Garoppolo hasn't been recommended surgery from any of the doctors he's visited with since suffering a right high ankle sprain in last week's loss to the Seahawks, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo missed two games earlier this season after spraining the same ankle, and though he looks poised to avoid surgery following his latest setback, he'll be in store for a lengthier recovery period this time around. For now, Garoppolo will treat the injury with rest and rehab for the next 4-to-6 weeks before the 49ers re-evaluate him for a potential return from injured reserve. Coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged earlier this week that Garoppolo isn't a lock to make it back from IR this season, and the 4-5 49ers' standing in the NFC playoff picture once December arrives will likely play a factor in any decision about the quarterback's activation. Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard will serve as the 49ers' signal-callers for however long Garoppolo remains sidelined.
Nov 5, 2020
IR move official
The 49ers officially placed Garoppolo (ankle) on injured reserve Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The transaction was merely a formality, as head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted Wednesday that Garoppolo could be done for the season after aggravating a high-ankle sprain in last week's loss to the 49ers. At the very least, Garoppolo will have to miss three games by virtue of landing on IR, so the 49ers will turn the offense over to Nick Mullens in the meantime.
Nov 4, 2020
May not be back this year
Garoppolo may not play again this season, per coach Kyle Shanahan, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The team likely won't rush Garoppolo back if it falls out of playoff contention, and he may not recover from his ankle injury in time to contribute again in 2020 regardless. Nick Mullens will get the first crack at filling in under center, with CJ Beathard also on hand should Mullens struggle. Shanahan also didn't commit to Garoppolo's status on the team for 2021, as Garoppolo didn't exactly light it up when out there this season, with a 7:5 TD:INT and no 300-yard performances.
Nov 3, 2020
Heading to IR
The 49ers will place Garoppolo (ankle) on injured reserve, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Under the rules put in place this season, Garoppolo will be sidelined at least three weeks as a result of this move. That said, coach Kyle Shanahan told Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area that Garoppolo suffered an entirely new high ankle sprain from the one suffered back in September, meaning he'll be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks. Because surgery is being considered, there's also potential for the quarterback to miss the rest of the campaign. As long as Garoppolo is sidelined, Nick Mullens will direct the 49ers offense, with C.J. Beathard in reserve.
Nov 2, 2020
Will miss at least six weeks
Garoppolo (ankle) will miss at least the next six weeks and could miss more time if surgery is required, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
If Garoppolo returns on the most optimistic side of his timeline, the Week 14 matchup with Washington comes exactly six weeks after his removal from last week's loss to Seattle. Nick Mullens will start under center while Garoppolo recovers for a 49ers offense that could be without star tight end George Kittle (foot) for the rest of the season.
Nov 2, 2020
Out indefinitely with ankle injury
Garoppolo has a high-ankle sprain and is out indefinitely, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo exited in the third quarter of this past Sunday's loss to the Seahawks and didn't return. This injury has been nagging Garoppolo since Week 2, and the team has decided to shut him down until he can fully recover. There's a good chance that he's placed on IR, which would keep him out until at least Week 12. Nick Mullens is expected to be San Francisco's starting quarterback this Thursday against the Packers, while C.J. Beathard serves as the backup.
Nov 1, 2020
Injures ankle Sunday
Garoppolo suffered an ankle injury during Sunday's contest at Seattle, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
ANALYSIS
After the 49ers' third possession of the third quarter, Garoppolo was in clear pain on the sideline. Shortly thereafter, backup Nick Mullens was seen warming up on the sideline, forecasting a health concern for Garoppolo, who missed Weeks 3 and 4 due to a high right ankle sprain. If Garoppolo aggravated the issue, his status will be one to watch as the 49ers have a short week to prepare for a Thursday matchup with the Packers.
Oct 25, 2020
Commits two turnovers vs. Patriots
Garoppolo completed 20 of 25 pass attempts for 277 yards and two interceptions while gaining four yards on his lone carry during Sunday's 33-6 win over the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo averaged a healthy 11.1 yards per attempt while completing an impressive 80 percent of his passes. He committed two turnovers in the first half, including one on a heave to the end zone just before halftime, though his team took a 20-point lead into the break thanks to a dominant performance by the ground attack. It wasn't quite the return to Foxboro that Garoppolo imagined from a personal perspective, but he came away with another win nonetheless. He was coming off a stellar three-touchdown performance in his previous game and will look to get back on track next Sunday against the Seahawks.
Oct 21, 2020
Clear of ankle injury
Garoppolo wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report.
ANALYSIS
It wouldn't have been shocking for Garoppolo to make an appearance on the report after missing Weeks 3 and 4 due to a high right ankle sprain. Plus, coach Kyle Shanahan held Garoppolo out of the second half in his return Week 5 against the Dolphins, seemingly as a precautionary measure. Garoppolo then put together a season-best effort Sunday night versus the Rams, completing 23 of 33 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns. With his ankle injury behind him, he'll take aim this weekend at New England's ninth-ranked pass defense (219.8 yards per game).
Oct 19, 2020
Finally looks healthy with 3 TDs
Garoppolo (ankle) completed 23 of 33 pass attempts for 268 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday's 24-16 win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
If there was any doubt that Garoppolo's dismal performance (and subsequent benching) against the Dolphins last week wasn't related to him coming back too quickly from a high-ankle sprain, let Sunday's bounce-back performance quash any concerns regarding his abilities under center. The 28-year-old looked like a completely different player against the Rams, as he was moving well in the pocket and was far more accurate on medium and long pass attempts that required him to plant on the balky ankle. Ankle sprains can be tricky and require extra time to heal, so don't be surprised if Garoppolo remains on the injury report during practice this week. That being said, it appears that fantasy owners can resume using Jimmy G as either a starter in medium-to-large sized leagues and in DFS formats against the right opponent. Next Sunday's matchup against the Patriots may not be one of those aforementioned favorable matchups, as New England boasts a talented secondary.
Oct 14, 2020
Logs full practice, as expected
Garoppolo (ankle) practiced in full Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo upheld coach Kyle Shanahan's expectation from earlier Wednesday that the QB would have no restrictions on his practice reps to begin Week 6 prep. Just a few days removed from playing his first half of football since Week 2, Garoppolo appears as if he'll be able to handle every rep this coming Sunday against the Rams. Still, with a meager performance Week 5 versus the Dolphins -- 7-for-17 passing for 77 yards and two interceptions -- he'll be attempting to right the ship against L.A.'s tough pass defense.
Oct 14, 2020
In line for full practice
Coach Kyle Shanahan expects Garoppolo (ankle) to be a full practice participant Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo returned to action this past Sunday for the first time since Week 2, but his high right ankle sprain didn't allow him to finish the contest. When Garoppolo stepped aside at halftime, Shanahan noted he wanted to "protect" the quarterback, which may have been cover for his brutal performance to that point in the game (7-for-17 passing for 77 yards and two interceptions). Assuming he practices in full Wednesday and maintains said status through the end of the week, Garoppolo will have his hands full Sunday versus the Rams' second-ranked pass defense.
Oct 12, 2020
Aiming to play Sunday
Coach Kyle Shanahan expects Garoppolo (ankle) to participate in practice this week with the aim to start Sunday versus the Rams, Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo notably didn't play in the second half of Sunday's 43-17 loss to the Dolphins. Just before the third quarter, Shanahan told the Fox broadcast that he made the decision to "protect" Garoppolo, and Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area noted the quarterback emerged from the game "no worse, injury-wise, than he went in." Garoppolo instead is dealing with the usual discomfort from a game that marked his first since Week 2 due to a high right ankle sprain. That said, his play was uninspiring, as he completed seven of 17 passes for 77 yards and two interceptions Sunday. Behind Garoppolo, C.J. Beathard is next in line for reps, while Nick Mullens occupies the third QB spot on the 49ers' depth chart.
Oct 11, 2020
Taking second half off Sunday
Garoppolo will yield quarterback to C.J. Beathard for the second half of Sunday's game against the Dolphins, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. If he doesn't reenter the game, Garoppolo will finish 7-for-17 passing for 77 yards and two interceptions.
ANALYSIS
On seven first-half possessions, the 49ers scored one touchdown, but they otherwise punted three times, had a turnover on downs and capped the half with back-to-back Garoppolo picks. Per Wagoner, coach Kyle Shanahan told the Fox broadcast that the decision was made to "protect" Garoppolo, who was making his first appearance after two games missed due to a high right ankle sprain. San Francisco doesn't have a respite for the foreseeable future -- its bye is Week 11 -- but it stands to reason Garoppolo will have his practice reps closely monitored in the short term to make sure he can perform on game day. Note Nick Mullens was a healthy scratch Sunday, so Garoppolo will serve as the sole backup to Beathard in the second half.
Oct 9, 2020
In line to start Sunday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday on KNBR Radio that Garoppolo (ankle) is expected to start Sunday against the Dolphins if he successfully makes it through Friday's practice.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old practiced as a limited participant the past two days and is on track to return from the two-game absence if he can avoid a setback Friday. Garoppolo's status will receive more clarity when the 49ers release their official injury report later in the day.
Oct 8, 2020
Officially limited again
Garoppolo (ankle) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo appeared to participate in his second consecutive limited practice without a brace or extra padding on his right ankle, per Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area. The starting quarterback have one more opportunity to prove his health at practice before the 49ers tag him with an official injury designation for Sunday's game against the Dolphins. In the event that Garoppolo were forced to miss a third straight game, the team would have to decide between Nick Mullens or C.J. Beathard under center for another week.
Oct 8, 2020
Practicing again Thursday
Garoppolo (ankle) was spotted at the early portion of Thursday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was limited in his return to practice Wednesday, and considering the nature of his high right ankle sprain, it wouldn't surprising to see his reps capped again Thursday. San Francisco will continue to monitor Garoppolo's health in order to make a decision about his availability for Sunday's game against the Dolphins. David Lombardi of The Athletic notes that the 49ers' primary focus may be making sure that Garoppolo is fully ready to suit up for Week 6's divisional matchup against the Rams.
Oct 7, 2020
Limited in return to practice
Garoppolo (ankle) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Garoppolo's reps were capped in his first on-field work since suffering a high right ankle sprain Week 2. He'll have two more chances to prove the health of his ankle before the 49ers make a decision on their starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Dolphins. Another absence from Garoppolo will result in one of Nick Mullens or C.J. Beathard starting at quarterback.
Oct 7, 2020
In line to return to practice
Garoppolo (ankle) is expected to practice in a limited capacity Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The appearance at practice will mark Garoppolo's first since he sprained his right ankle Week 2. Coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned his hope Monday that Garoppolo would take the field Wednesday, and it appears as if the quarterback will do just that. That said, it's unclear whether Garoppolo will do enough this week to return Sunday against the Dolphins. If Garoppolo doesn't, Shanahan will have to make a decision to start either Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard under center.
Oct 5, 2020
Status for Week 5 still uncertain
Coach Kyle Shanahan said after Sunday's 25-20 loss to the Eagles that he's "not sure, totally" whether Garoppolo (ankle) will be available Week 5, Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
"I know he'll have a good workout here Monday and Tuesday, and hopefully he'll be good to go for Wednesday," Shanahan said, "but I'm not sure yet." Garoppolo has yet to return to practice since suffering a sprained ankle Week 2. Nick Mullens threw two interceptions (including a pick-six) and fumbled once en route to being benched mid-game Sunday, and though C.J. Beathard looked competent upon entering the lineup late, the 49ers are desperate to get Garoppolo back in the driver's seat. San Francisco currently sits at the bottom of the NFC West with a 2-2 record.
Oct 2, 2020
Ruled out for Week 4
Garoppolo (ankle) will not play Sunday night against the Eagles, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo, RB Raheem Mostert (knee) and TE Jordan Reed (knee) have been ruled out, while TE George Kittle (knee), WR Deebo Samuel (foot) and RB Jerick McKinnon (ribs) have been cleared to play. With Nick Mullens set for another start under center, Garoppolo will hope to make it back for Week 5 against Miami.
Oct 2, 2020
Not yet ruled out
GM John Lynch said Garoppolo (ankle) "still has a chance" to play Sunday against the Eagles if he's able to practice Friday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old has been unable to practice so far this week, but if he can take the field Friday and show he can protect himself despite the ankle injury, he may be able to play. It doesn't seem overly likely Garoppolo is able to do that given his lack of practice reps thus far, but he's yet to be officially ruled out. Nick Mullins appears set to receive a second straight start at quarterback for San Francisco.
Oct 1, 2020
Missing another practice
Garoppolo (ankle) isn't present for Thursday's practice, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo is destined to go down as a non-participant for the 49ers' second straight practice of Week 4, leaving him trending in the wrong direction for Sunday's game against the Eagles. According to David Lombardi of The Athletic, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo would only need to go through one live period of practice this week to have a shot at playing Sunday, but since Friday's session will be a walkthrough, the quarterback looks to have ran out of opportunities to prove his health. Expect Nick Mullens to pick up another start under center this weekend.
Sep 30, 2020
Can't practice Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Garoppolo (ankle) will not practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Earlier this week Shanahan expressed optimism about Garoppolo's chances of practicing Wednesday, but the starting signal-caller's high right ankle sprain hasn't yet progressed enough for him to resume handling on-field drills. Backup Nick Mullens performed admirably while defeating the Giants in Week 3, and he'll likely get another chance to start against the Eagles on Sunday unless Garoppolo makes a quick turnaround.
Sep 28, 2020
May be able to practice Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan is "still not sure" if Garoppolo (ankle) will be able to practice Wednesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo sat out Week 3 due to a high right ankle sprain, but Shanahan noted the quarterback looks "a lot better" this week than he did at the same point last week. Still, considering the injury, Garoppolo may be hard-pressed to gain clearance from the team's medical staff for Sunday's game against the Eagles. In the event he's unable to suit up, the 49ers again will turn to Nick Mullens to serve as their starting signal-caller.
Sep 25, 2020
Won't play Week 3
Coach Kyle Shanahan ruled out Garoppolo (ankle) for Sunday's game against the Giants and named Nick Mullens the starting quarterback, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mullens has been taking the first-team reps all week with Garoppolo unable to practice due to the high right ankle sprain, so Friday's announcement hardly comes as a surprise. RBs Tevin Coleman (knee) and Raheem Mostert (knee) have also been ruled out, and TE George Kittle (knee) has yet to be cleared.
Sep 24, 2020
Sitting in practice again
Garoppolo (ankle) didn't participate in Thursday's practice, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo's lack of reps for the second practice in a row doesn't come as much of a surprise after coach Kyle Shanahan hinted earlier this week that he wasn't counting on the quarterback to be available for Sunday's game against the Giants while he tends to a high-ankle sprain. Nick Mullens has taken the first-team reps during the Niners' first two practices of the week and is expected to draw his first start since 2018 after coming on in relief of an injured Garoppolo to complete eight of 11 attempts for 71 yards and an interception in last weekend's win over the Jets.

Won't practice Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Garoppolo (ankle) won't take part in practice Wednesday, and he'll "be surprised" if the quarterback take the practice field this week, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was diagnosed with a high right ankle sprain this past Sunday versus the Jets, but Shanahan told Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News on Monday that the QB "still has a chance" to play this Sunday against the Giants. Typically, a player with such an injury is sidelined multiple weeks, and the unlikelihood that Garoppolo practices this week would seem to indicate his trending toward an absence Week 3. Still, the 49ers have until Sunday morning to make the ruling official, so his status will be one to watch in the coming days.

Not ruled out for Week 3 yet
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Garoppolo (ankle) "still has a chance" to suit up against the Giants on Sunday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan downplayed the severity of Garappolo's injury, a high-ankle sprain sustained due near the end of the first half Week 2 against the Jets. Such injuries usually require at least some time on the sideline to get right, but it sounds like the 49ers will monitor Garoppolo throughout the week before making a final decision on his availability. Nick Mullens will slot back into the starting lineup if Garappolo can't suit up against the Giants.

Has high-ankle sprain
Garoppolo picked up a high right ankle sprain during Sunday's 31-13 road win against the Jets, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to getting hurt near the end of the first half, Garoppolo completed 14 of 16 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. In the aftermath of the game, coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers won't make a decision on Garoppolo's status for next Sunday's game versus the Giants until the end of the week. Considering high-ankle sprains typically require time on the sidelines, Nick Mullens may be poised for his first start since the 2018 campaign.

Exits game with ankle injury
Garoppolo (right ankle) won't return to Sunday's game against the Jets, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his exit from the contest, Garoppolo had completed 14 of his 16 pass attempts for 131 yards and two TDs. Nick Mullens is now in at QB for the 49ers.

Two TD passes in loss
Garoppolo completed 19 of 33 pass attempts for 259 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 24-20 loss to the Cardinals. He also added nine yards on his only carry.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo got off to a quick start by connecting with Raheem Mostert for a 76-yard touchdown in the first quarter. He averaged just 5.7 yards per attempt on his other 32 throws and perhaps suffered from George Kittle (leg) being hampered by an injury, though he did manage to connect with Jerick McKinnon to take the lead in a back-and-forth fourth quarter. All in all it was a solid season debut for Garoppolo, who will look to do more of the same next Sunday against the Jets.

Still wearing "light brace"
Garoppolo is still wearing "a light brace" contradicting a previous report that the QB was brace free, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The distinction hardly matters, as Garoppolo was excellent last season while wearing a brace. Perhaps his mundane rushing total (62 yards in 2019) could improve once the 28-year-old officially sheds the brace, and it's entirely possible the team is just being over cautious with their star QB, allowing Garoppolo to have the full extent of his mobility come the regular season. With George Kittle locked down to a long-term extension Thursday, Garoppolo should be poised for another successful season so long as Deebo Samuel, who had offseason surgery on his foot, returns closer to the start of the season as expected.

No longer using brace
Garoppolo isn't wearing a knee brace at practice this year, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo wore a brace last season in his first year back from an ACL tear, perhaps limiting his mobility. He's never been one to contribute rushing stats, but it's possible he navigates the pocket more easily now that he's coming up on two full years removed from the severe knee injury. His bigger concern, at least for the moment, is a receiving corps that will lack established playmakers if Deebo Samuel (foot) isn't ready for Week 1. The 49ers figure to lean on their defense and running game, much as they did last season en route to the Super Bowl.

Comes up short in Super Bowl
Garoppolo completed 20 of 31 pass attempts for 219 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions during Sunday's 31-20 Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo's two interceptions will rightfully overshadow an otherwise-solid Super Bowl performance, particularly his first turnover: a questionably floated pass early in the second quarter which sailed into the waiting arms of Bashaud Breeland. To the 28-year-old's credit, he rebounded to lead the 49ers down the field that same quarter, capping the drive with a 15-yard touchdown to Kyle Juszczyk. Down by four points with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, however, Garoppolo overshot an open Emmanuel Sanders for what would have likely resulted in a go-ahead score -- instead, Frank Clark sacked the signal-caller on the next play for a turnover on downs which set up a Chiefs touchdown. His final interception, a desperation deep shot while facing an 11-point deficit, ultimately sealed the loss for San Francisco. Though the unfortunate taste of mistakes made on the big stage will linger heading into the offseason, there's plenty of reason for optimism that Garoppolo will take another step forward w

Barely used in victory
Garoppolo completed six of eight pass attempts for 77 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions in Sunday's 37-20 NFC Championship Game win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo was essentially a hand-off machine for Raheem Mostert (29 carries for 220 yards and four touchdowns) in a contest that the 49ers led big from start to finish. The 28-year-old came through on a couple of crucial third-down conversions when asked to, but coach Kyle Shanahan clearly had a run-first gameplan instilled from the get go. San Francisco may not have the luxury of running the ball as frequently as it has in its first two playoff victories in two weeks, as the Chiefs were able to put up big numbers on a stout Tennessee defense in the AFC Championship Game. Garoppolo has responded well when asked to engage in a shootout with an opposing gunslinger this season, so there is a chance we see Jimmy G unleashed in the Super Bowl if the game script calls for it.

Just 19 pass attempts in win
Garoppolo completed 11 of 19 pass attempts for 131 yards, a touchdown and an interception in Saturday's 27-10 NFC divisional round victory over the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
This game played out like one of the first-half victories for the 49ers during its 10-0 start to the season. The defense was back at full strength and completely shut down the Vikings' offense, and the rushing attack did all of the heavy lifting on offense, leaving Garoppolo with little to do from a statistical standpoint. The 28-year-old may be asked to contribute more offensively in the NFC Championship Round, as either potential opposing quarterback (Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers) could put up more points and force Garoppolo to match their production. San Francisco's signal caller has come through with flying colors in these situations this season, but his upside remains lower than nearly every potential AFC option that will be available in DFS next Sunday.
