Inks two-year extension
Thuney agreed to terms Tuesday on a two-year extension with Chicago, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bears traded a 2026 fourth-round pick to Kansas City in exchange for Thuney back in March, so he had been slated out the 2025 campaign on the final season of the five-year, $80 million contract he inked with the Chiefs in 2021. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Thuney's new two-year extension is worth a total of $35 million. He had been scheduled for a $16 million cap hit in 2025, but Thuney's extension should lower that figure. The 32-year-old left guard will work as a leader in Chicago's revamped offensive line, which also includes new interior starters Drew Dalman and Jonah Jackson.

Traded to Chicago
The Bears are trading a fourth-round pick to the Chiefs for Thuney, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
ANALYSIS
The Bears recently agreed to a deal for Rams G Jonah Jackson, who previously played for the Lions under new Bears head coach Ben Johnson. While Jackson is coming off a disappointing season with the Rams after signing a huge contract, Thuney remains universally regarded as one of the best and most consistent guards in the league. The 32-year-old even played left tackle when the need arose in Kansas City during the stretch run of this past season, although he struggled in the Super Bowl after mostly proving up to the task. Thuney likely will play left guard in Chicago, where returning starter Teven Jenkins (calf) is scheduled for free agency after completing his rookie contract. Trades can't be made official until the start of the 2025 league year next Wednesday (March 12).
Jul 28, 2024
Passes physical Sunday
Thuney (pectoral) passed his physical Sunday and is eligible to return from the active/PUP list.
ANALYSIS
Thuney has opened Kansas City's training camp on the sidelines as a result of continuing to recover from a pectoral injury he suffered in January. He now appears to be on the cusp of returning to the practice field in the coming days.
Jul 17, 2024
Opens camp on active/PUP
The Chiefs placed Thuney (pectoral) on the active/PUP list Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
After getting injured during the Divisional Round of the playoffs last season, Thuney missed the AFC Championship and the Super Bowl for Kansas City. Coach Andy Reid has previously stated Thuney is expected to be ready in time for the Week 1 opener against Baltimore. He's eligible to be activated from the PUP list at any time this summer.
Jun 13, 2024
Should be ready for season opener
Head coach Andy Reid told reporters Thursday that he expects Thuney (pectoral) to be available for the beginning of the regular season, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Reid also noted that Thuney is "kind of right on the border" regarding his return for the start of training camp, which is another positive sign for the 31-year-old's recovery. Once Thuney is back on the field, he's expected to remain Kansas City's top left guard.
Feb 11, 2024
Finishes season on IR
Thuney (pectoral) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Thuney was never expected to be able to suit up for the Super Bowl and was ruled out for the matchup against the 49ers on Friday. His move to IR will open a roster spot for the Chiefs, who elevated nose tackle Mike Pennel from the practice squad. Nick Allegretti should draw the start at left guard for Kansas City.
Feb 9, 2024
Won't play in Super Bowl
Thuney (pectoral) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl matchup against the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
The first-team All-Pro hasn't been able to practice since sustaining a pectoral injury during the Chiefs' divisional-round win, so it's no surprise that he won't be suiting up for Super Bowl LVIII. Kansas City is expected roll with Nick Allegretti at left guard in Thuney's stead.
Feb 7, 2024
Officially DNP Wednesday
Thuney (pectoral) didn't practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The Chiefs' All-Pro left guard is believed to be dealing with a significant pectoral injury, and coach Andy Reid has expressed doubt about Thuney's availability for the Super Bowl. However, NFL Network's James Palmer reported that "those around Thuney still believe that there is a shot" he can play. Veteran Nick Allegretti made the start at left guard versus the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game and should be there again this week if Thuney is absent.
Feb 6, 2024
Unlikely to play in Super Bowl
Thuney (pectoral) is unlikely to be available for the Super Bowl on Sunday, Kevin Patra of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Andy Reid said it's a long shot that Thuney practices this week as he is still recovering from a strained pectoral during the team's division-round victory. If the 31-year-old can't suit up versus the 49ers on Sunday, Nick Allegretti should get the start at left guard for the second consecutive game.
Feb 1, 2024
Still listed as out
Thuney (pectoral) was listed as a non-participant on the Chiefs' estimated injury report for the second day in a row Thursday.
ANALYSIS
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport already reported before the AFC Championship Game that Thuney would be a "long shot" to play in the Super Bowl if the Chiefs were to advance. The 2023 First Team All-Pro started all 17 regular season games and Kansas City's first two playoff games. If he can't suit up Feb. 11 against the 49ers, Nick Allegretti is next up on the depth chart.
Jan 28, 2024
Season likely over
Thuney (pectoral), who has already been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Ravens, is unlikely to play in the Super Bowl if the Chiefs can beat Baltimore, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Thuney has received varying diagnoses' on his pectoral injury, with some experts believing it is torn, while others believe it's just a strain. Either way, it appears the 31-year-old's season is over and he may need surgery to repair the injury. Nick Allegretti is expected to start at left guard in his place for the AFC Championship Game.
Jan 26, 2024
Missing AFC Championship Game
Thuney (pectoral) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's game against the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Thuney was unable to practice all week after he exited the Chiefs' divisional-round win over the Bills with a pectoral injury, so it's not a surprise that he won't be suiting up Sunday. Kansas City's offensive line could very well struggle to replace the 31-year-old, as he received first-team All-Pro honors this season. Without Thuney, Nick Allegretti is expected to get the nod at left guard.
Jan 24, 2024
Likely doubtful for Sunday
Thuney (pectoral) will not practice Wednesday and is unlikely to play Sunday against the Ravens, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Thuney still has a few more days until Sunday's AFC Championship Game to get healthy, but it appears he is likely closer to doubtful than questionable. His status will still be worth monitoring though, especially with fellow starting guard Trey Smith (illness) also missing practice. Nick Allegretti and Mike Caliendo will be options to fill in at guard if either or both miss their matchup against the Ravens.
Jan 22, 2024
Dealing with strained pectoral
Thuney sustained a strained pectoral during Sunday's win at Buffalo, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Thuney was forced out of the Chiefs' divisional-round win early due to the injury, but fortunately it wasn't too severe. There's still no guarantee he'll be available for the AFC Championship, though - Kansas City's official injury reports over the week will provide more information on that front.
Jan 21, 2024
Slated for MRI
Thuney (pectoral) will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of his injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Thuney sustained a right pec injury during Sunday's win over the Bills, and it's not yet clear whether he'll be forced to miss additional time. Nick Allegretti could see increased playing time if Thuney is unavailable for next Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Ravens.
Jan 21, 2024
Dealing with pec injury
Head coach Andy Reid said after Sunday's win over the Bills that Thuney is dealing with a right pec injury, Harold R. Kuntz of Fox 4 Kansas City reports.
ANALYSIS
Thuney exited Sunday's game in the second half and didn't return down the stretch. Whether he'll be available for the AFC Championship Game against the Ravens next Sunday remains to be seen.
Jan 21, 2024
Exits with chest injury
Thuney (chest) is questionable to return to Sunday's AFC divisional-round game against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
With Thuney on the sideline, Nick Allegretti has stepped into the left guard spot.
Jan 7, 2023
Good to go
Thuney (ankle) will play in Saturday's regular-season finale against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Thuney aggravated an ankle injury that kept him sidelined in Weeks 12 and 13 during last week's win over the Browns. However, the issue is not serious enough for him to be kept sidelined ahead of the playoffs. So, look for him to take on his usual worklaod assuming there are no setbacks.
Jan 5, 2023
Logs limited practice Thursday
Thuney (ankle) was limited in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Thuney was unable to suit up in Week's 12 and 13 due to an ankle injury which he reaggravated in the Chiefs' Week 17 win over the Broncos. After logging limited practices in consecutive days now, the guard will likely need to practice fully Friday if he hopes to play Saturday against the Raiders. Expect Nick Allegretti to start at left guard if Thuney is unavailable.
Jan 1, 2023
Aggravates injury
Thuney's ankle injury that took him out of Sunday's win against the Broncos is the same ankle he missed time with previously this season, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Thuney missed Week 12 and 13 with an ankle injury, but he now may miss more time after potentially aggravating the injury Sunday against the Broncos. McDowell notes that Thuney will undergo further testing Monday, to figure out the severity of the damage done to his ankle.
Jan 1, 2023
Won't return versus Denver
Thuney (ankle) has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Thuney left with an ankle injury during the second half. The veteran guard is one of the Chiefs' best offensive lineman, so it will be worth monitoring his status heading into next week's regular-season finale against Las Vegas.
Jan 1, 2023
Leaves Sunday's contest
Thuney is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Broncos due to an ankle injury.
ANALYSIS

Dec 9, 2022
Questionable against Broncos
Thuney (ankle) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Broncos.
ANALYSIS

Dec 4, 2022
Remaining out Week 13
Thuney (ankle) has been deemed inactive for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Thuney missed his first game of the season during last week's win over the Rams, and he'll now remain sidelined with an ankle injury despite returning to practice in full Wednesday. With the veteran out, Darian Kinnard or Lucas Niang will likely start at left guard against Cincinnati.
Nov 30, 2022
Full go Wednesday
Thuney (ankle) was listed as a full participant on the Chiefs' injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Thuney was sidelined for the first time this season during Sunday's win over the Rams, as he was sidelined with an ankle issue for the first two practices Week 12. However, the starting offensive lineman appears good to go again after returning to practice in full Wednesday. Thuney should step back in at right guard this Sunday versus Cincinnati.
Nov 27, 2022
Isn't suiting up in Week 12
Thuney (ankle) is listed as inactive for Sunday's game against the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Thuney is now slated to miss his first game of the 2022-23 campaign as a result of an ankle issue. In his absence, Nick Allegretti seems like the likely candidate to fill the vacated starting left guard role.
Oct 23, 2022
Playing Sunday
Thuney (hand) is active Sunday against the 49ers, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thuney missed some practice time this week with the injury, but he feels good enough to play Sunday. He'll start at left guard for the Chiefs.
Oct 24, 2021
Active Sunday
Thuney (hand) is active for Sunday's game against the Titans, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Thuney fractured his hand in a game versus the Bills on Oct. 10. Despite limited practice sessions and questionable tags, Thuney was able to play last week against Washington and will do so again Sunday. The star guard was able to play 100 percent of the offensive snaps last week, so no limitations should be expected.
Oct 23, 2021
Officially questionable
Thuney (hand) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's tilt with the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Thuney logged a full workload at Friday's practice after being a non-participant earlier in the week. Head coach Andy Ried is hopeful he will be able to give it a go according to Adam Teicher of ESPN.com.
Oct 17, 2021
Will play Sunday
Thuney (hand) is listed as active Sunday against Washington, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Officially listed as questionable with a fractured hand that prevented him from practicing Wednesday and Thursday, Thuney will be able to tough it out and give it a go Week 6. Expect the star guard to play with some sort of protection on the injured hand.
Oct 15, 2021
Listed as questionable for Sunday
Thuney (hand) is listed as questionable for Sunday's matchup with Washington.
ANALYSIS
Thuney didn't practice at all Wednesday or Thursday, but he was able to log a full practice Friday. If the 28-year-old left tackle is unable to suit up, Nick Allegretti or Laurent Duvernay-Tardif could step into the starting spot against Washington on Sunday.
Mar 15, 2021
Signs with KC
Thuney and the Chiefs agreed to a five-year, $80 million contract Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thuney was the most highly regarded lineman available in free agency, but the Chiefs spared no expense in bringing in the star guard in the aftermath of their debacle along the line in the Super Bowl. Originally a third-round pick of the Patriots in 2016, Thuney should further bolster what was already one of the league's most effective offense.
Mar 9, 2021
Not getting tagged
The Patriots aren't using a franchise tag on Thuney, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Thuney played out 2020 under a franchise tag for $14.8 million, and a repeat would've required a 20 percent raise to $17.7 million. The Patriots could still re-sign their reliable left guard, but they're better prepared for his potential departure after acquiring OT Trent Brown in a trade with the Raiders on Tuesday -- a move that could set the stage for Isaiah Wynn or Michael Onwenu to slide inside to left guard. Thuney has started all 80 of the Patriots' regular-season games since they selected him in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
Nov 1, 2020
All set for Week 8
Thuney (ankle) is active for Sunday's game at Buffalo.
ANALYSIS
Thuney earned the questionable tag after practicing as a limited participant all week, but he's ready to play in Sunday's divisional matchup. The 27-year-old should take up his usual starting post at left guard for the Patriots.
Oct 30, 2020
Listed as questionable
Thuney (ankle) is questionable for Sunday's game versus the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Thuney stayed on the field in a limited fashion all week after injuring his ankle last Sunday against the 49ers. The Patriots' offensive line is quite banged-up, so getting Thuney back would be a major boost against the Bills' front seven.
Oct 25, 2020
Injures ankle in loss
Thuney suffered an ankle injury during Sunday's 33-6 loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Thuney will attempt to return to action against the Bills on Nov. 1. He plays a key depth role along the offensive line.
Mar 19, 2020
Signs franchise tender
Thuney has signed his franchise tender with the Patriots, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With that, the Patriots' left guard is slated to earn $14.781 million this coming season. The team could also look to extend, or even deal Thuney, but as it stands the 2016 third-rounder is in line to remain a vital cog on New England's offensive line in 2020.
Mar 19, 2020
Receives franchise tag
The Patriots placed their franchise tag on Thuney on Thursday, Doug Kyed of NESN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The move locks Thuney up for the 2020 campaign, giving New England a piece of much-needed stability on offense following the departure of Tom Brady. Thuney would have been considered the top guard on the market had he hit free agency.
Mar 16, 2020
Franchise tag on tap
The Patriots are in line to place their franchise tag on Thuney, Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that year's franchise tag for guards topped $14 million, with the looming the move ensuring that the Patriots will retain a key cog on their offensive line. If he had reached free agency, Thuney would have been considered the top guard available on the open market.
