Cedes most returns to Williams
Nwangwu (hamstring) had a 34-yard kickoff return in Sunday's 23-10 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu suited up after being listed as questionable, but he ceded four of the Jets' five kickoff return opportunities to Isaiah Williams. When fully healthy, Nwangwu has served as the Jets' primary kickoff returner.
Nov 23, 2025
Cleared to play Week 12
Nwangwu (hamstring) is active for Sunday's game against Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was limited in the last two practices of Week 12 prep due to a hamstring injury, but he has been given the green light to play Sunday after going through pregame warmups. Nwangwu will mostly contribute on special teams as a returner on kickoffs, but he will also will serve as the Jets' No. 3 RB behind Breece Hall and Isaiah Davis due to Khalil Herbert (coach's decision) being inactive.
Nov 21, 2025
Questionable after limited practice
Nwangwu (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu didn't practice Thursday but returned to limited participation Friday. If the Jets' usual kickoff returner isn't available Sunday, those duties would likely go to Isaiah Williams.
Nov 20, 2025
Hamstring flares up
Nwangwu (hamstring) didn't practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu wasn't on Wednesday's injury report, so it's possible he aggravated his hamstring injury during practice. The standout return man previously missed action this season due to a hamstring injury and concussion, which have combined to limit Nwangwu to five appearances. If Nwangwu sits out Sunday against the Ravens, Isaiah Williams would likely tack kick return duties onto his usual role as a punt returner.
Nov 10, 2025
Scores 99-yard kickoff return TD
Nwangwu returned three kickoffs for 143 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-20 win over the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu got the Jets on the board with a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown, which tied for the longest scoring play in the NFL this season. He's one of the league's most dynamic kickoff returners when available, but a hamstring injury and concussion have limited Nwangwu to four appearances in 2025. He has two kickoff return touchdowns in six games with the Jets dating back to last season.
Nov 7, 2025
Cleared for Week 10
Nwangwu (concussion) does not carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Browns, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was unable to play against the Bengals in Week 8 while in the league's concussion protocol. He had more time to progress in his recovery courtesy of the Jets' Week 9 bye and was a full participant during Week 10 prep. Nwangwu has passed the final step of being cleared by an independent neurologist and will play against Cleveland on Sunday, when he will mostly serve on special teams as a kickoff returner while providing depth in the backfield behind Breece Hall and Isaiah Davis.
Nov 5, 2025
Practices in full Wednesday
Nwangwu (concussion) was a full participant at practice Wednesday, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu missed the Jets' last game before their Week 9 bye at Cincinnati due to a concussion, but his activity to start the new week of preparation suggests he has a good chance to be available for Week 10 versus the Browns. He has until Sunday to officially clear league concussion protocol.
Oct 24, 2025
Ruled out for Week 8
Nwangwu (concussion) won't play Sunday against the Bengals, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu has been limited to three appearances by injuries in 2025, first hurting his hamstring in Week 1 against the Steelers and then sustaining a concussion in Week 7 against the Panthers. In Nwangwu's absence, Isiaiah Williams, Khalil Herbert, Isaiah Davis and Arian Smith are all candidates to handle kickoff returns.
Oct 22, 2025
Misses Wednesday's practice
Nwangwu (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was diagnosed with a concussion during the Jets' 13-6 loss to the Panthers in Week 7. He's opened the week with a DNP, and even if he were to practice, he would have to progress through the league's five-step concussion protocol in order to play against the Bengals on Sunday. Isaiah Williams would likely serve as the Jets' primary returner on kickoffs if Nwangwu were to miss time.
Oct 19, 2025
Won't return Week 7
Nwangwu (concussion) has been ruled out for the rest of Sunday's game against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu went to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion, and the 2021 fourth-rounder will not return to Sunday's contest. Isaiah Williams will likely handle returns on kickoffs the rest of the way.
Oct 19, 2025
Being evaluated for a concussion
Nwangwu is in the locker room being evaluated for a concussion, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu went to the locker room to get checked for a concussion during the third quarter of Sunday's game against Carolina. The return specialist had one return for 29 yards against the Panthers and is averaging 35 yards per return this season.
Oct 10, 2025
Cleared to return Week 6
Nwangwu (hamstring) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Broncos, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu upgraded to full practice participation Friday to avoid an injury designation for Sunday's game in London. He's set to reclaim primary kickoff return duties on special teams in what will be Nwangwu's first action since Week 1.
Oct 9, 2025
Gets in limited session Thursday
Nwangwu (hamstring) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu's slowly making progress after sitting out practice Wednesday. He hasn't suited up for game action since getting injured in Week 1 against the Steelers. If Nwangwu's healthy enough to play Sunday against the Broncos, he would likely reprise his role as the Jets' primary kickoff returner.
Oct 8, 2025
Limited Wednesday
Nwangwu (hamstring) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
The Iowa State product returned to practice Wednesday after missing the Jets' last four games due to a hamstring injury sustained in the Week 1 loss to the Steelers. Nwangwu will likely carry an injury designation into the weekend if he's unable to upgrade to a full session Thursday or Friday. If the 27-year-old is sidelined for the Week 6 matchup against the Broncos, Isaiah Davis is likely to operate as the Jets' top kick returner.
Oct 6, 2025
Could return in Week 6?
Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters Monday that Nwangwu (hamstring) will travel with the Jets to London, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu has been sidelined for four consecutive games since sustaining a hamstring injury in the Jets' Week 1 loss to the Steelers. However, he'll travel with the team to London ahead of the Week 6 matchup against the Broncos, which is a good sign for his potential availability. The 27-year-old's practice participation throughout the week will likely provide the best indication of whether he can return for Sunday's contest.
Oct 4, 2025
Downgraded to out for Week 5
Nwangwu (hamstring) has been downgraded to out for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu hasn't played since Week 1 and didn't practice this week, so it always seemed unlikely that he would face Dallas. Isaiah Davis figures to continue to fill in as an option on kickoff returns.
Oct 3, 2025
Deemed questionable
Nwangwu (hamstring) is questionable for Sunday's game versus Dallas, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu hasn't played since Week 1 and didn't practice at all this week, making it seem more likely that he'll miss a fourth straight game. Isaiah Davis has been operating as the Jets' return man in Nwangwu's absence, though Davis will have a heightened offensive role going forward with Braelon Allen (knee) set to miss the next two-plus months.
Oct 2, 2025
DNP on Thursday
Nwangwu (hamstring) did not participate in Thursday's practice, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu has missed the Jets' last three games due to a hamstring injury. He has opened the week with consecutive DNPs, so he is trending towards being inactive for Sunday's game against Dallas unless he can practice in at least a limited capacity Friday.
Oct 1, 2025
Misses practice Wednesday
Nwangwu (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu has missed the last three games. He played three snaps on special teams in Week 1, returning one kickoff for 33 yards.
Sep 28, 2025
Won't play vs. Miami
Nwangwu (hamstring) has been downgraded from doubtful to out for Monday's game against the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was a long shot to play in Monday's contest after drawing the doubtful tag, and he will indeed miss a third consecutive game due to a hamstring injury that he sustained in Week 1 against the Steelers. Isaiah Davis will continue to operate as the Jets' top return option on kickoffs in Nwangwu's absence.
Sep 27, 2025
Doubtful for Monday
Nwangwu (hamstring) is listed as doubtful ahead of Monday night's matchup against the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
The Iowa State product downgraded from limited practice Thursday and Friday to a DNP on Saturday, suggesting he's trending in the wrong direction ahead of Monday night's contest. If Nwangwu misses his third consecutive game due to a hamstring issue, Isaiah Davis is expected to assume the Jets' top kick returner position.
Sep 26, 2025
Limited at practice
Nwangwu (hamstring) was a limited participant at practice Friday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu has logged back-to-back limited practices to open the week as he nurses the hamstring injury that he suffered in Week 1 against Pittsburgh. The wide receiver has missed the last two games as a result of the injury, and if he can't go against the Dolphins on Monday Night Football, Isaiah Davis would once again stand to see an increase in workload on special teams.
Sep 19, 2025
Ruled out for Week 3
Nwangwu (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bucs, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was injured in the Week 1 opener against the Steelers and will miss his second straight game. Isaiah Davis, Isaiah Williams and Arian Smith will likely handle returner duties in Nwangwu's absence.
Sep 12, 2025
Sidelined by hamstring Week 2
Nwangwu (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bills, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu exited the Jets' season opener due to a hamstring injury and wasn't able to practice in any capacity leading up to the team's Week 2 home game against the Bills. With Nwangwu sidelined and Xavier Gipson having been waived earlier in the week, Arian Smith and the recently signed Isaiah Williams are the top candidates to return kickoffs Sunday.
Sep 10, 2025
Doesn't practice Wednesday
Nwangwu (hamstring) did not participate in Wednesday's practice, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu played just three snaps on special teams and logged 33 kick return yards before departing in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Steelers due to a hamstring injury. The 2021 fourth-rounder will have two more opportunities to participate in practice and avoid an injury designation heading into the Jets' Week 2 AFC East clash against the Bills this Sunday. The recently signed Isaiah Williams would be the top candidate to join Arian Smith on kick returns if Nwangwu is unable to play.
Sep 7, 2025
Exits game due to hamstring injury
Nwangwu (hamstring) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu picked up the injury in the first quarter and is being evaluated by trainers to determine the severity of the injury. Arian Smith would figure to join Xavier Gipson on kick returns if Nwangwu is unable to return.
Aug 17, 2025
Plays 24 snaps vs. Giants
Nwangwu (calf) turned six carries into 31 yards during the Jets' 31-12 preseason loss to the Giants on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was able to suit up for Saturday's contest after recovering from a calf injury that he suffered during the Jets' preseason opener against the Packers. He played four snaps on special teams and 20 on offense, the latter of which was second most among Jets running backs behind Donovan Edwards (22). Nwangwu is in a battle with Edwards and Isaiah Davis (ankle) for the RB3 job behind Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, and Nwangwu's last opportunity to make his case for the Jets' 53-man roster is Friday against the Eagles.
Aug 16, 2025
Poised to play Saturday
Nwangwu (calf) is in line to play against the Giants in Saturday's preseason game, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu has been nursing a calf injury that he suffered in the Jets' preseason opener against the Packers, but he's progressed enough in his recovery to play Saturday. With Isaiah Davis (ankle) ruled out, Nwangwu is in line to see the bulk of the backfield carries Saturday, assuming that Breece Hall and Braelon Allen are limited to the first couple of offensive series.
Aug 9, 2025
Calf injury not major
Nwangwu (calf) sustained an injury during Saturday's 30-10 preseason win over the Packers but is not believed to be dealing with anything major, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was involved Saturday, rushing five times for 10 yards while racking up 35 yards on his only kick return. The 2021 fourth-round pick is competing for a reserve backfield role as well as duties in the return game. It's encouraging that Nwangwu's injury doesn't appear serious, but it remains to be seen if he'll be cleared in time to next play in the preseason on Saturday, Aug. 16 versus the Giants.
Mar 14, 2025
Remaining in New York
The Jets are re-signing Nwangwu to a one-year contract, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Pelissero, the deal is worth up to $2.5 million. Nwangwu logged just one offensive snap over two games with the Jets last season, but he dazzled with a 99-yard kick return for a touchdown in Week 13. Nwangwu ended the campaign on IR due to a hand injury, but he's expected to be healthy by the start of training camp.
Dec 15, 2024
Officially placed on IR
The Jets moved Nwangwu (hand) to injured reserve Saturday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu is dealing with a hand injury, and with New York having just four games remaining on the regular-season slate and already eliminated from playoff contention, his campaign has come to an end. The fourth-year tailback will finish his first season as a Jet with no offensive touches over two games, but he did make an impact as a returner, taking a kickoff 99 yards to paydirt Week 13 against Seattle. Xavier Gipson will likely be the Jets' lead kick returner with Nwangwu now sidelined.
Dec 13, 2024
Expected to go to IR
Nwangwu (hand) is expected to be placed on injured reserve, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu played 18 snaps (one on offense and 17 on special teams) last week against Miami, but he was apparently injured along the way. Xavier Gipson is expected to take over as the Jets' kick returner.
Dec 11, 2024
Estimated as DNP
Nwangwu (hand) was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday's practice estimation, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Iowa State product played 18 total snaps (one offensive and 17 on special teams) without recording a stat in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins, seemingly sustaining a hand injury in the process. Wednesday's practice was just a walkthrough; however, if Nwangwu cannot upgrade to at least limited participation Thursday or Friday, Xavier Gipson will likely serve as the Jets' top kick returner in the Week 15 matchup against the Jaguars.
Dec 2, 2024
Signs to active roster
The Jets signed Nwangwu to their active roster Monday.
ANALYSIS
The fourth-year pro from Iowa State made his Jets debut in a Week 13 loss to the Seahawks, returning three kickoffs for 157 yards, including a 99-yard touchdown. Nwangwu's performance Sunday was enough to land him a spot on the Jets' active roster, likely serving as the team's top kick returner and a depth piece in their running back room for the remainder of the season. In a corresponding move, the Jets waived 2023 fifth-round pick Israel Abanikanda.
Dec 2, 2024
Scores 99-yard return TD in debut
Nwangwu returned three kickoffs for 157 yards, including a 99-yard touchdown, in Sunday's 26-21 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu made an instant impact in his Jets debut after being elevated from the practice squad. His 99-yard kickoff return touchdown gave the Jets a 21-7 lead in the second quarter, but Seattle scored 19 unanswered points from there to drop the Jets to 3-9. Given Nwangwu's success in this game, he'll likely be elevated from the practice squad to return kickoffs again in Week 14 against the Dolphins.
Nov 30, 2024
Elevated from practice squad
The Jets elevated Nwangwu from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the first time Nwangwu has been elevated to the Jets' active roster, and he has an opportunity to make his 2024 regular-season debut against the Seahawks on Sunday. Nwangwu played in nine regular-season games for the Vikings in 2023 and logged five carries for 13 yards.
Sep 9, 2024
Finds new opportunity
Nwangwu (undisclosed) signed with the Jets' practice squad Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was somewhat surprisingly waived by the Vikings on Aug. 27, but after being claimed by the Saints, was waived again with a failed physical designation. Whatever injury the Iowa State product was tending to, appears to be in the past due to his signing by the Jets. The 26-year-old could be emergency running back depth for the team, but maybe more likely a potential return man option in the future.
Aug 29, 2024
Waived after failed physical
The Saints waived Nwangwu (undisclosed) on Thursday with a failed physical designation, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was claimed off waivers by the Saints on Wednesday after he was cut by the Vikings on Tuesday. The 2021 fourth-round pick was unable to pass his physical, and he will revert back to the waiver wire. Nwangwu appeared in nine regular-season games for the Vikings last season, during which he turned five carries into 13 yards while playing 106 snaps (13 on offense, 93 on special teams).
Aug 28, 2024
Claimed by New Orleans
The Saints claimed Nwangwu off waivers Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Vikings waived Nwangwu a day earlier, electing to keep only two running backs on their initial 53-man roster. The Saints have four, at least temporarily, with Nwangwu joining Alvin Kamara, Jamaal Williams and Jordan Mims while Kendre Miller (hamstring) starts the season on injured reserve. The Saints may view Nwagnwu as a kick returner more so than a running back, considering he has three career touchdowns on special teams.
Aug 27, 2024
Not in Minnesota's plans
The Vikings plan to cut or trade Nwangwu on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a bit surprising given recent reports about his progress as a running back, but the Vikings apparently weren't won over and may also have doubts about Nwangwu's utility as a kick return under the new rules. The 2021 fourth-round pick could generate some interest from other teams, if only because he has 4.32 speed and three career touchdowns on kick returns. The Vikings are also parting ways with Myles Gaskin, temporarily leaving Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler as the only running backs on their roster. They'll presumably bring someone back later this week or else add a waiver claim and/or free agent.
Aug 18, 2024
Another strong preseason game
Nwangwu had seven carries for 45 yards in Saturday's preseason win over Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Even with the Vikings resting almost all their starters, Nwangwu had a second impressive preseason performance. Nwangwu has had a role in the offense as the No. 3 running back in training camp and looks to have locked up the job at this point in the preseason. While he's not likely to get many carries behind Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler, Nwangwu at least looks like a viable option should the top two get hurt. However, it's not clear if he'll return kickoffs as he hasn't been used as a returner in either preseason game after having that role last season.
Aug 11, 2024
Scores TD in preseason opener
Nwangwu had five carries for 52 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown, in Saturday's preseason win over Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu has had a role in the offense as the No. 3 running back in training camp and looked good in his preseason debut. He showed off his speed on his his long touchdown run when he turned on the jets after finding a large hole in the defense. While he's not likely to get many carries behind Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler, Nwangwu at least looks like he'll be next up should one of the top two backs succumb to an injury.
Jul 31, 2024
Getting more reps this summer
Nwangwu has taken more reps in training camp than in years past, but he's still a clear third on the depth chart at running back, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran running back appeared in just nine games last season, dealing with a back injury that landed him on injured reserve early in the 2023 campaign. He had just five carries for 13 yards on offense. He's an impact kick return when healthy, however. While he's not likely to get many carries behind Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler, it sounds like he could be next in line should there be an injury.
Jan 10, 2024
Not involved in loss
Nwangwu failed to record a single snap on offense in Sunday's 30-20 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was not on the field for any offensive snaps for the third straight game Sunday. Instead, he played 13 special teams in the contest. The veteran running appeared in just nine games this season, dealing with a back injury that landed him on injured reserve early in the 2023 campaign. Nwangwu attempted five rushes for 13 yards as he was minimally involved in Minnesota's offense and contributed mostly as a member of the special teams unit. Entering the final year of his rookie deal, the 25-year-old will look to take a step forward as a contributor before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2025.
Dec 18, 2023
One carry as backup RB
Nwangwu had one carry for one yard and had one kickoff return for 14 yards in Saturday's overtime loss at Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu worked as the backup running back to Ty Chandler with Alexander Mattison out with an ankle injury. He played 11 snaps on offense. Nwangwu could move back to just a special teams role if Alexander returns Sunday against Detroit.
Dec 11, 2023
Gets two carries in win
Nwangwu had two carries for three yards in Sunday's win at Las Vegas. He also had one kickoff return for 31 yards.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu played three snaps on offense as he got time as the backup running back with Alexander Mattison suffering a sprained ankle. Nwangwu could get increased playing time this week as the backup to Ty Chandler if Mattison is out.
Dec 8, 2023
Clears concussion protocol
Nwangwu (concussion) was a full participant in Friday's practice and does not carry an injury designation ahead of Sunday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu logged a full practice session Thursday after being limited Wednesday. His lack of an injury designation indicates that he was able to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocols. He'll provide backfield depth behind Alexander Mattison and Ty Chandler while operating as the Vikings' main kick returner.
Dec 7, 2023
Making progress through protocols
Nwangwu (concussion) logged a full practice Friday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was limited in Wednesday's practice session coming out of the team's Week 12 bye and was able to follow that up with the full session Thursday. Assuming he suffers no setbacks, he'll most likely receive clearance to suit up against the Raiders on Sunday, but he remains in protocols for now.
Dec 6, 2023
Limited to start week
Nwangwu (concussion) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice session.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu played eight snaps on special teams in Week 12 against the Bears and returned a kickoff for 38 yards towards the end of the game. He appears to have picked up the concussion following the bye week and his status leading up to Sunday's contest against the Raiders will be closely monitored. Ty Chandler and Brandon Powell are currently listed as the backup kick returners for Minnesota in case Nwangwu is unable to play.
Nov 15, 2023
Minimal involvement in win
Nwangwu rushed two times for nine yards in Sunday's 27-19 win over the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu's two rushing attempts were his first carries of the season as Sunday's game was only his second appearance as a member of the active roster in the 2023 campaign. Though the veteran hasn't been a factor for the Vikings this season, he could see a slight increase in opportunities in Week 11 if starting running back Alexander Mattison misses time due to a concussion. With that said, Nwangwu would likely play behind Ty Chandler who proved to be an effective option out of the backfield against the Saints. The 25-year-old Nwangwu will look to make the most of his opportunities if called upon to be the No. 2 back when the Vikings visit the Broncos in Week 11.
Nov 5, 2023
Healthy scratch Sunday
Nwangwu (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was absent from Week 8 due to an illness, but he didn't appear on the team's injury report this week. The Iowa State product's next chance to suit up will be in Week 10 against the Saints.
Nov 1, 2023
Avoids injury report Wednesday
Nwangwu (illness) was not listed on the Vikings' injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was ruled out of Sunday's contest against the Packers with an illness, but seems to be on track to return in Week 9 against the Falcons. Nwangwu made his 2023 debut in Week 7 against the 49ers after missing the first six games with a back injury. He contributes to the Vikings more as a kick returner than out of the backfield, despite the struggles of Cam Akers and Alexander Mattison in the running game.
Oct 28, 2023
Ruled out for Week 8
Nwangwu (illness) has been downgraded to out for Sunday's contest against the Packers, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu returned from injured reserve on Oct. 18 and made his 2023 debut in Week 7 against the 49ers. His return has been short-lived, though, as he was unable to practice Friday due to an illness. With Nwangwu out for Sunday's divisional matchup against the Packers, Ty Chandler is the most likely candidate to take over kick return duties.
Oct 27, 2023
Questionable with illness
Nwangwu (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu missed practice Friday due to an illness, putting his status for Week 8 in limbo. If he can't suit up Sunday, Ty Chandler would likely fill in as Minnesota's primary kick returner.
Oct 18, 2023
Activated from IR
Nwangwu was activated from injured reserve and added to Minnesota's 53-man roster Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu has regained health and is poised to make his season debut Monday against the 49ers. He's an option in the return game and could also factor in at running back on passing downs, joining a backfield consisting of Alexander Mattison, Cam Akers and Ty Chandler.
Oct 14, 2023
Not ready for return
Nwangwu (back) was not activated from injured reserve Saturday, per the NFL transaction report.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu has been out for the entirety of the season but had his practice window opened earlier this week. He participated in Thursday's session fully, but that won't be enough for him to be ready for game action against the Bears on Sunday. Nwangwu's next chance to play will come in Week 7 against against the 49ers.
Oct 13, 2023
Unlikely to play at Chicago
Nwangwu (back) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Per Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Coach Kevin O'Connell said Friday that Nwangwu probably won't return from Minnesota's injured reserve list in Week 6. For now, that would leave just Cam Akers and Ty Chandler as change-of-pace options behind Alexander Mattison at running back Sunday.
Oct 12, 2023
Practices fully Thursday
Nwangwu (back) practiced fully Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu remains on injured reserve and is waiting to make his season debut. With Alexander Mattison, Cam Akers and Ty Chandler on the depth chart, the Vikings can be patient with Nwangwu. He's unlikely to have an offensive role unless there are multiple backfield injuries.
Oct 11, 2023
No limitations in practice
Nwangwu (back) was a full practice participant Wednesday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Designated for a return from injured reserve earlier in the day, Nwangwu ended up practicing without any limitations. He may be back for Sunday's game against Chicago but isn't likely to have much of a role on offense, if any, behind Alexander Mattison and Cam Akers.
Oct 11, 2023
Designated for return Wednesday
Nwangwu (back) was designated to return to practice Wednesday, Craig Peters of the Vikings' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Wednesday's move opens a 21-day window for Minnesota to activate Nwangwu from injured reserve. After missing the first five games of the season, Nwangwu could be back as soon as Sunday against Chicago. Once he's activated, Nwangwu will likely contribute as a return man and could also play running back snaps in passing situations.
Aug 30, 2023
Going to injured reserve
The Vikings placed Nwangwu (undisclosed) on injured reserve Wednesday, Lindsey Young of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Sidelined since late July due to unknown health concern, Nwangwu will be required to miss at least the first games of the campaign now that he's on IR. Minnesota's backfield will be paced by Alexander Mattison (undisclosed) this season, with Ty Chandler, newcomer Myles Gaskin and practice-squad member DeWayne McBride backing him up.
Aug 20, 2023
Remains sidelined
Nwangwu (undisclosed) did not play in Saturday's preseason loss to Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
There's been no update on Nwangwu's status, as he's been sidelined for most of training camp. Ty Chandler looks set to begin the season as the No. 2 running back at this point with Nwangwu hurt.
Aug 17, 2023
Still not practicing
Nwangwu (undisclosed) remained sidelined at Thursday's practice, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
There's been no update on Nwangwu's status, as he's been sidelined for most of training camp. With Ty Chandler performing well in the preseason opener and stringing together strong practices, Nwangwu might be losing any shot he had at the Vikings' No. 2 running back job.
Aug 14, 2023
Remains sidelined
Nwangwu (undisclosed) did not practice Monday, Dane Mizutani of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu also sat out the team's preseason loss to the Seahawks on Thursday and dealt with an undisclosed injury earlier in camp, although it's not clear if the two are related. The Iowa State product is believed to still be in competition with Ty Chandler for the backup role to Alexander Mattison; however, if he continues to miss time he may fall short in that battle, at least to start the season.

Misses preseason game with injury
Nwangwu did not play in Thursday's preseason loss at Seattle due to an undisclosed injury, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, Ty Chandler helped his case for the backup job to Alexander Mattison by rushing 11 times for 41 yards and catching all four of his targets for 29 yards. The competition for the backup role was seen as close in training camp before Thursday with neither player standing out, but Chandler likely now has a lead. Still, Nwangwu at times was reported to be more impressive than Chandler in the spring and summer practices, so he could still win the battle or a significant role if he's able to play in a preseason game.

Returns to practice Wednesday
Nwangwu (undisclosed) took part in Wednesday's walkthrough practice, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After taking a seat at sessions Monday and Tuesday, Nwangwu was able to mix into some drills Wednesday. The same can be said for the Vikings' No. 1 running back Alexander Mattison (undisclosed), who was seen limping near the end of Tuesday's practice. When healthy, Mattison will handle most of the team's RB reps this season, but Nwangwu also is a candidate for work along with Ty Chandler and rookie seventh-rounder DeWayne McBride.
Aug 1, 2023
Misses second straight practice
Nwangwu (undisclosed) sat out a second consecutive practice Tuesday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
This news comes on the heels of Alexander Mattison leaving Tuesday's session early with a visible limp, per Lewis. Nwangwu's health concern isn't known, but with he and Mattison less than 100 percent at the moment, the Vikings' healthy backfield options consist of Ty Chandler and rookie seventh-round pick DeWayne McBride.
Jul 26, 2023
In RB2 mix
Based on his observations from the first day of training camp, Dane Mizutani of the St. Paul Pioneer Press suggests that Nwangwu "appears to be (the) RB2 behind Alexander Mattison."
ANALYSIS
While it's too early in training camp to get a concrete read on the Vikings' running back pecking order, it does look like there will be an open competition for the top backup spot behind Mattison, now that Dalvin Cook is no longer in the mix. With that in mind, Nwangwu -- a 2021 fourth-rounder -- figures to jostle for slotting with 2022 fifth-rounder Ty Chandler and 2023 seventh-rounder DeWayne McBride. Further context will be revealed once the team's unofficial depth chart is posted, but based on Mizutani's report, Nwangwu is player to monitor in the coming weeks.
Jun 17, 2023
Battling for backup RB role
Nwangwu was frequently was used alongside quarterback Kirk Cousins in 11-on-11 snaps during Wednesday's minicamp workout, The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu is a dynamic kickoff returner, but will compete for a larger role as a running back after the release of Dalvin Cook. Nwangwu enters camp battling Ty Chandler and DeWayne McBride for snaps behind starter Alexander Mattison. It's possible the backfield could be more of a committee, where Nwangwu's speed could give him a significant role.
Jan 24, 2023
Effective on special teams in 2022
Nwangwu tallied nine rushes for 14 yards to go along with two receptions (on two targets) for 21 yards over 17 games during the 2022 regular season. He also returned 35 kickoffs for a career-high 920 yards and a touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu logged the third kickoff-return touchdown of his career while continuing to almost exclusively play in this phase. The second-year running back actually logged fewer offensive snaps (18) than he did during his rookie season (27), when he played just 11 games. Instead, top running backs Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison once again carried Minnesota's rushing game. With the team currently $24.5 million over the projected 2023 salary cap, it's unclear how the Vikings will handle the futures of Cook and Mattison, the latter of whom is set to become an unrestricted free agent. The potential departure of either of these two backs could open up more opportunities for Nwangwu in 2023.

Will play Sunday
Nwangwu (illness) is active Sunday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu's active status Sunday doesn't come as a surprise as it was reported earlier by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network that he would play. However, his absence from the team's inactive list does make it official. He should handle the team's kick returns, while also being emergency depth at running back.
Jan 15, 2023
Expected to be active
Nwangwu (illness) is should play Sunday against the Giants, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu logged a DNP on Friday, but he's recovered enough that he's expected to take the field for the wild-card round. Although the second-year pro doesn't see much work on offense, he is the team's kick returner, and it looks like he'll be handling those duties Sunday.
Jan 13, 2023
Dealing with illness
Nwangwu is questionable for Sunday's wild-card matchup against the Giants due to an illness, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu didn't practice Friday due to an illness and his status for the wild-card matchup is officially in question. If the reserve running back doesn't suit up, Jalen Reagor, K.J. Osborn and Ty Chandler would be candidates for kick-return duties.
Jan 9, 2023
Gets time at RB
Nwangwu notched five carries for 13 yards and reeled in his only target for 16 yards during Sunday's 29-13 win against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu had just four carries all season before the game as he got some playing time at running back in the second half while starters were rested ahead of the playoffs. He'll likely return to just his special teams role in the playoffs.
Nov 30, 2022
Returns kick for TD in Week 12
Nwangwu returned five kickoffs for 166 yards -- including one for a 97-yard touchdown -- in the Vikings' 33-26 win over the Patriots in Week 12.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week on the strength of his big return, becoming the third Vikings player to take home the honor this season. The second-year running back out of Iowa State has played just seven snaps on offense all season but leads the NFL with 620 kickoff return yards.
Sep 12, 2022
Limited to kick return duty
Nwangwu returned one kickoff for 25 yards in Sunday's win over Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu played all six of his snaps on special teams. He'll work as the primary kickoff returner and may not get many carries as a running back unless Dalvin Cook or Alexander Mattison are hurt or the game is a blowout.
Aug 28, 2022
Four carries in preseason finale
Nwangwu rushed four times for 14 yards and fumbled once but recovered during the Vikings' 23-13 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
The 2021 fourth-round pick was the first running back in the game with both Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison sitting out, but Nwangwu only had limited success. The Iowa State product logged only 13 carries as a rookie and instead made his biggest contributions on special teams, and he figures to be in for a similar role in 2022 as long as Cook and Mattison remain healthy.
Aug 21, 2022
Four total touches
Nwangwu gained four yards on two carries and also recorded two receptions for eight yards in Saturday's preseason loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu worked behind Alexander Mattison while Dalvin Cook (rest) sat out. He saw carries on only two offensive possessions, however, and didn't have any meaningful production. Nwangwu figures to do the majority of his production as Minnesota's kick returner this season, assuming the backfield remains relatively healthy.
Aug 14, 2022
Looks healthy Sunday
Nwangwu (leg) rushed seven times for 41 yards and caught both of his targets for 18 yards in Sunday's 26-20 preseason loss to the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu looked crisp in his return from a minor soft-tissue injury to his leg, flashing the explosiveness that he displayed as a rookie returner last season (two kick-return touchdowns). The 24-year-old figures to have a lock on the kickoff return job in Minnesota, but he has carried over his excellent YPC totals -- albeit in smaller sample sizes -- from his time at Iowa State (5.9 YPC in his final two seasons). Nwangwu probably won't see enough playing time with the talented one-two combo of Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison ahead of him on the Vikings' running back depth chart, but there appears to be potential future fantasy goodness within this young athlete, should the opportunity arise for him to see enough touches on a per-week basis at some point this year (or with another club in the future). As for 2022, Nwangwu will have to fend off Ty Chandler (five carries for 50 yards Sunday) to keep his spot at third on the depth chart heading into the regular season.
Aug 6, 2022
Back to practice
Nwangwu (leg) returned to practice Saturday, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The second-year running back missed just four days of practice with a soft-tissue injury in his leg. Nwangwu faces an uphill battle for meaningful playing time with Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison and Ty Chandler all firmly ahead of him on the depth chart, but his value as a return specialist should guarantee the 24-year-old a spot on the 53-man roster.
Aug 2, 2022
Day-to-day with leg injury
Nwangwu is considered day-to-day with a soft-tissue injury in his leg, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu didn't practice Tuesday but seemingly is expected back in the not-too-distant future. His value on special teams should ensure the 2021 fourth-round pick of a roster spot, but earning work on offense will be a challenge in a backfield that also has Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison and rookie fifth-round pick Ty Chandler. Nwangwu's absence from practice should leave more reps for Chandler, in particular.
Jan 18, 2022
One touch in season finale
Nwangwu ran one time for four yards during Week 18's 31-17 win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
With Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison demanding the majority of touches, Nwangwu struggled to find consistent work out of Minnesota's backfield. He finished the 2021 campaign with 13 rushes for 61 yards and four catches for nine yards. However, he did make a big impact on special teams and was the only player in the NFL this season to record multiple kick returns for touchdowns. The Vikings have Cook, Mattison and Nwangwu all under contract for 2022, so barring drastic change, their backfield is expected to look the same next year.
Dec 27, 2021
Non-factor in loss
Nwangwu ran five times for eight yards and caught both of his targets for five yards during Sunday's 30-23 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu operated as the primary backup to Alexander Mattison with Dalvin Cook sidelined due to COVID-19 protocols. The 23-year-old saw a season-high seven touches, but he failed to make an impact with the increased opportunities. The Vikings continue to try to get the electric return man more involved in the offense, but so far the experiment hasn't translated into fantasy production. Fantasy managers should monitor Cooks' status throughout the week, but even if he is sidelined again, Nwangwu will likely be a risky fantasy option against the Packers in Week 17.
Dec 21, 2021
Impresses with limited touches
Nwangwu had three carries for 33 yards during Monday's divisional win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu operated as the No. 2 option behind Dalvin Cook with Alexander Mattison (illness) on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and he showcased some explosiveness despite only logging three touches. He also returned two kickoffs for 51 yards. The rookie fourth-round pick isn't a likely candidate to return fantasy value as long Cook remains healthy, especially when Mattison returns to the lineup, but he's worth keeping an eye on in dynasty formats.
Dec 6, 2021
Works as secondary back
Nwangwu had two carries for zero yards, caught two of three targets for four yards and returned two kickoffs for 65 yards during Sunday's 29-27 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu operated as Minnesota's No. 2 tailback with Dalvin Cook (shoulder) sidelined, but the rookie still played only nine offensive snaps. Alexander Mattison un surprisingly dominated the backfield work with 22 carries and three receptions. Nwangwu is unlikely to have a significant offensive role while one of Cook or Mattison is healthy.
Dec 5, 2021
Active for Sunday
Nwangwu (illness) is active Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu is set for a potentially prominent role in the Vikings' offense Sunday against the Lions. With Dalvin Cook (shoulder) out, Nwangwu will be slotted behind only Alexander Mattison on the running back depth chart. After landing on IR due to an injury suffered in their preseason opener, he emerged in Week 8 against Dallas and quickly began making an impact on special teams, returning a kick for a touchdown in Week 9 and Week 12. Selected in the fourth round of the 2021 Draft, Nwangwu has recorded two carries on the season for 16 yards, numbers he'll try to expand on Sunday.
Dec 4, 2021
Suddenly questionable
Nwangwu is questionable for Sunday's game against Detroit with an illness.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was expected to serve as the Vikings' backup running back behind Alexander Mattison with Dalvin Cook (shoulder) sidelined. It appears that there is still a decent chance for him to suit up, though an illness has jeopardized his availability after he logged full practices all week. In addition to further depleting the running back depth chart, Nwangwu's potential absence would hurt the Vikings return game as he has two kick-return touchdowns this season.
Dec 3, 2021
Should have role on offense
Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer hinted that Nwangwu will have a role on offense Sunday against the Lions with top back Dalvin Cook (shoulder) ruled out for the contest, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
In the absence of Cook -- who could be sidelined until the Vikings' Week 15 game in Chicago due to a dislocated shoulder -- Minnesota will likely turn to Alexander Mattison as a three-down workhorse, a role he handled capably in place of an injured Cook in Weeks 3 and 5. Ameer Abdullah had served as Mattison's top understudy in those contests, but since been released and picked up by Carolina, Nwangwu is the lone healthy running back behind Mattison on the 53-man roster. Nwangwu, a rookie fourth-round draft pick, has just two carries to his name (for 16 yards) and has played only two snaps on offense through five appearances, but he's shown some playmaking abilities in space on special teams with two kickoff returns for scores in the past two weeks. Look for the Vikings to find ways to get the ball in Nwangwu's hands and take advantage of his 4.32-second 40-yard-dash speed when he's on the field, but he's still unlikely to see enough snaps and touches to make for a reliable fantasy option, even in deeper leag
Nov 29, 2021
Another kick return touchdwon
Nwangwu ran one time for seven yards and added a 99-yard kick return for a touchdown during Sunday's 34-26 loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
With the Vikings trailing 31-20 in the third quarter, Nwangwu exploded 99-yards down the right sideline for his second kick-return touchdown of the season. The return specialist also saw his first two offensive snaps of the season in the fourth quarter, which could be a sign of things to come with Dalvin Cook (shoulder) expected to miss an extended period of time. Alexander Mattison is expected to once again take over the primary running back duties with Cook out, but Nwangwu's explosive kick returns may be enough for him to carve out an offensive role as well.
Nov 8, 2021
Returns kickoff for TD
Nwangwu returned a kickoff for a 98-yard touchdown and also had a nine-yard carry for a first down on a fake punt in Sunday's overtime loss at Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
He also had another kickoff for 23 yards. Nwangwu has been limited to special teams, but his speed there can make an impact for the Vikings.
Oct 19, 2021
Activated from IR
Nwangwu (knee) was activated from injured reserve Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was designated to return to practice in late September and the team clearly feels he looks good enough to rejoin the active roster. The Vikings released Ameer Abdullah in a corresponding move, leaving Nwangwu as the third-string running back behind Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison.
Sep 29, 2021
Returning to practice
Nwangwu (knee) will return to practice Wednesday, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie fourth-round pick hyperextended his left knee on the opening kickoff of his first preseason game. Nwangwu won't necessarily have a role on offense once he's activated, even if it happens this week and Dalvin Cook (ankle) misses another game. However, the rookie could be an immediate contributor on special teams, where his 4.32 speed can be put to good use while he learns the finer points of the RB position. Nwangwu's prospect profile is all measurables, no production, as he saw just 150 touches in four seasons at Iowa State while backing up David Montgomery and then Breece Hall.
Sep 22, 2021
Gets light work in during practice
Nwangwu (knee) was seen working on a side field during Wednesday's practice, Eric Smith of the Vikings' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu hyperextended his left knee during a preseason matchup with the Browns on Aug. 14 and was placed on IR before the initial 53-man roster deadline. The rookie fourth-round pick is eligible to come off IR as soon as Week 4, but the Vikings aren't going to rush anything because he will need to get his conditioning back. When healthy, Nwangwu will likely compete with Ameer Abdullah for the No. 3 running back job.
Sep 1, 2021
Lands on injured reserve
Nwangwu (knee) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Eric Smith of the Vikings' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu picked up the knee injury during the preseason matchup with the Browns on Aug. 14, and he was sidelined for the rest of the preseason, The rookie fourth-round pick will remain on injured reserve for at least the first three contests of the regular season.
Aug 30, 2021
Still sidelined
Nwangwu (knee) is not practicing Monday, Eric Smith of the Vikings' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Nwangwu was forced to sit out Minnesota's final two preseason games due to a knee injury picked up Aug. 14, but his recovery timetable should still put him on track for Week 1. That leaves the rookie fourth-round pick with just under two weeks to resume practicing prior to Sept. 12's season opener in Cincinnati.
Aug 19, 2021
Out for rest of preseason
Nwangwu (knee) will miss Minnesota's final two preseason games, but he's expected to recover from a hyperextended left knee in time for Week 1, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie fourth-round pick was injured while returning the opening kickoff of his first preseason game. It's a tough break, but he didn't figure to have much of role in the Week 1 offense anyway, slotting in behind Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison and possibly even Ameer Abdullah. With 4.32 speed in a 210-pound frame, Nwangwu could help out on on special teams on Sundays while using the practice field during the week to work on his development as a running back. The Vikings tentatively expect him to be ready for Week 1.
Aug 14, 2021
Exits with knee injury
Nwangwu left Saturday's preseason game against the Broncos with a knee injury, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie sixth-round pick likely hurt his knee on an 18-yard return of the opening kickoff, considering he left the contest before taking a touch on offense. Nwangwu might've had a busy evening if not for the injury, with Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison both healthy scratches for Saturday's exhibition. Instead, the Vikings leaned on undrafted rookie A.J. Rose and 28-year-old Ameer Abdullah to handle backfield snaps.
