The Iowa State product is believed to still be in competition with Ty Chandler for the backup role to Alexander Mattison; however, if he continues to miss time he may fall short in that battle, at least to start the season.

Still, Nwangwu at times was reported to be more impressive than Chandler in the spring and summer practices, so he could still win the battle or a significant role if he's able to play in a preseason game.

With the team currently $24.5 million over the projected 2023 salary cap, it's unclear how the Vikings will handle the futures of Cook and Mattison, the latter of whom is set to become an unrestricted free agent. The potential departure of either of these two backs could open up more opportunities for Nwangwu in 2023.

As for 2022, Nwangwu will have to fend off Ty Chandler (five carries for 50 yards Sunday) to keep his spot at third on the depth chart heading into the regular season.

However, he did make a big impact on special teams and was the only player in the NFL this season to record multiple kick returns for touchdowns. The Vikings have Cook, Mattison and Nwangwu all under contract for 2022, so barring drastic change, their backfield is expected to look the same next year.

With the Vikings trailing 31-20 in the third quarter, Nwangwu exploded 99-yards down the right sideline for his second kick-return touchdown of the season. The return specialist also saw his first two offensive snaps of the season in the fourth quarter, which could be a sign of things to come with Dalvin Cook (shoulder) expected to miss an extended period of time. Alexander Mattison is expected to once again take over the primary running back duties with Cook out, but Nwangwu's explosive kick returns may be enough for him to carve out an offensive role as well.
