Let go by Baltimore
The Ravens released Williams on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Williams opened up the 2024 campaign as one of Baltimore's starting safeties alongside Kyle Hamilton but ended up losing his spot to Ar'Darius Washington towards the end of the season. Williams will now look to catch on with a new team after having recorded 149 tackles (105 solo) and five interceptions across 32 games during his three-year tenure with the Ravens.
Jan 23, 2025
Loses spot in Ravens' rotation
Williams played in 11 regular-season games in 2024 and finished with 33 tackles (26 solo), two pass defenses and one fumble recovery.
ANALYSIS
Williams began the regular season as the Ravens' starting safety alongside Kyle Hamilton. However, he lost his starting spot to Ar'Darius Washington, and after playing just one defensive snap between Week 11 and 12, Williams was a healthy scratch for the final five games of the regular season and for Baltimore's two playoff games. Williams signed a five-year, $70 million contract with the Ravens in March of 2022, but given his fallout over the course of the regular season, it's hard to imagine him being in Baltimore for the 2025 campaign.
Dec 15, 2024
Healthy scratch again Week 15
Williams (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's matchup versus the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Williams will sit out as a coach's decision for the second straight week. After starting in each of Baltimore's first nine games this season, the veteran safety has fallen out of the rotation while Ar'Darius Washington has taken hold of a starting role.
Dec 1, 2024
Inactive Sunday
Williams (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
The safety only played on one defensive snap over the past two games. Williams played on more than 80 percent of the defensive snaps in nine of Baltimore's first 10 games but has lost playing time in recent weeks to Ar'Darius Washington.
Nov 3, 2024
Expected to play
Williams is active and expected to play in Sunday's Week 9 matchup with the Broncos, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams was active for the Ravens' Week 8 loss to the Browns but ultimately did not see the field. He is expected to be back in his usual role at safety versus Denver.
Sep 6, 2024
Second-leading tackler in loss
Williams racked up six tackles (five solo) and one pass defensed during Thursday's 27-20 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Williams played 100 percent of defensive snaps in Baltimore's season opener and finished second on the team in terms of tackles, after only star linebacker Roquan Smith. The starting safety figures to repeat an every-down role Week 2 versus the Raiders at home.
Dec 26, 2023
Snags pick in win
Williams picked up seven solo tackles (five solo) and one interception in the Ravens' 33-19 win over the 49ers on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Williams' interception was his first of the season. His seven tackles also tied his season-high. The safety was on the field for all 68 defensive snaps, which makes it four out of five weeks without missing a snap. He will look to carry his momentum from Monday's win into the Ravens' Week 16 showdown with the Dolphins.
Dec 22, 2023
Logs full practice Friday
Williams (groin) was a full participant in Friday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Williams upgraded to full practice participation Friday after being limited Thursday. He sustained a groin injury in the Ravens' Week 15 win over the Jaguars, but looks on track to play Monday against the 49ers. Williams has 34 tackles (23 solo) over eight games this season.
Dec 18, 2023
Considered day-to-day
Head coach John Harbaugh said after Sunday's win over Jacksonville that Williams (groin) is considered day-to-day, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams sustained a groin injury during Sunday's victory and was unable to return down the stretch, but it's unclear whether he'll be available for next Monday's game against the 49ers. If Williams is unable to go, Geno Stone will likely see additional snaps.
Dec 17, 2023
Questionable to return
Williams is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Jaguars due to a groin injury.
ANALYSIS
Williams sustained his injury early in the third quarter of Sunday's matchup, and it's unclear whether he'll be available down the stretch. If he can't return, Geno Stone will likely see an uptick in playing time in Baltimore's secondary.
Nov 8, 2023
Avoids injury report Wednesday
Williams (hamstring) was not listed on Baltimore's injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Williams has missed the Ravens' last three games recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained in Week 6 against Tennessee, but it now looks like he should play in Week 10. He figures to step back into a starting role at safety next to Kyle Hamilton come Sunday.
Nov 5, 2023
Won't play Sunday
Williams (hamstring) is inactive ahead of Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old safety was able to practice in a limited fashion throughout the week, but it seems as if he won't be able to play through his hamstring issue this Sunday. With Williams missing time, Geno Stone is expected to see an uptick in work in Baltimore's secondary.
Nov 3, 2023
Carries questionable tag for Sunday
Williams (hamstring) has been deemed question for Sunday's Week 9 matchup against the Seahawks, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams has missed each of Baltimore's past two contests due to a hamstring injury, but he was able to log a trio of limited practice sessions during Week 9 prep after not practicing at all last week. That gives him a chance to suit up against Seattle on Sunday, though coach Jim Harbaugh noted Friday that a decision on the safety's availability "could go down to the wire," per Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic. If Williams needs to sit out again, Geno Stone would likely garner another start in his place.
Nov 1, 2023
Limited in practice
Williams (hamstring) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Cordell Woodland of 105.7 The Fan Baltimore reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams returned to practice Wednesday after missing the past two games with a hamstring injury. The 2017 second-round pick has only played in three games this season but will look to be ready to go for Baltimore's game against the Seahawks on Sunday.
Oct 27, 2023
Will sit out again Week 8
Williams (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's contest against Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Williams sat out Week 7 against Detroit and will miss a second straight game Sunday. He wasn't able to practice at all this week, so his outlook for Week 9 is also shaky. Geno Stone will likely start at free safety for however long Williams remains out.
Oct 20, 2023
Won't play vs. Lions
Williams (hamstring) is listed as out for Sunday's game versus Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Williams will miss his fourth game through seven weeks Sunday, this time due to a hamstring injury he sustained in Week 6 at Tennessee. Geno Stone proved a worthy fill-in when Williams missed three of Baltimore's four games to start the season, so Stone will likely start again in Week 7.
Oct 18, 2023
Missing from practice
Williams (hamstring) did not participate at practice Wednesday, Brian Wacker of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
After sustaining a hamstring injury during Sunday's win over Tennessee, Williams was unable to practice to open the week. He'll probably need to practice in some capacity Thursday or Friday to have a chance to play in Week 7 versus Detroit.
Oct 16, 2023
Could sit out vs. Lions
Coach John Harbaugh said Monday that Williams (hamstring) is "iffy" to play in Week 7 versus Detroit, Childs Walker of the Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams came away from Sunday's win over Tennessee in London with a hamstring injury, and he's now in jeopardy of missing his fourth game of the season as he recovers. Baltimore's injury reports this week will provide clarification regarding his status for Week 7.
Oct 15, 2023
Sustains hamstring injury Sunday
Williams is questionable to return for Sunday's contest against the Titans due to a hamstring injury, Ryan Mink of the Ravens' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams had one tackle and a pass deflection before exiting Sunday's game. Geno Stone will take over at free safety alongside Kyle Hamilton for as long as Williams remains on the sidelines.
Oct 9, 2023
Posts five tackles in return
Williams registered five tackles (three solo) in a loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Williams played his first game since suffering a pectoral injury in Week 1 against Houston. The veteran appeared to be back to full health, logging 63 of Baltimore's 66 defensive snaps. Williams should again take on a near every-down role Week 6 against Tennessee.
Oct 4, 2023
Practices in full Wednesday
Williams (pectoral) was a full participant at practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
After missing Baltimore's last three games with a pectoral issue, Williams now appears to be back to full strength ahead of Week 5. He figures to resume a starting role at safety next to Kyle Hamilton come Sunday at Pittsburgh.
Oct 1, 2023
Won't play Sunday
Williams (pectoral) is inactive Sunday against the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Williams was able to close out the week with back-to-back full practices, so his absence is a bit of a surprise, despite the questionable tag. He'll now work to be ready for Week 5 against the Steelers, while Geno Stone will likely get all the work at free safety against Cleveland on Sunday.
Sep 29, 2023
Officially questionable
Williams (pectoral) has drawn a questionable designation ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns.
ANALYSIS
After being limited at Wednesday's practice, Williams was a full participant for consecutive days to close out the week. Still, the Ravens are being cautious with his status by labeling him as questionable. Geno Stone would presumably be in line to fill in at free safety if he ultimately cannot go.
Sep 28, 2023
Set to return
Williams (pectoral) logged a full practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Williams appears to be set to play Week 4 against the Browns after suffering what was expected to be a significant injury in the team's Week 1 win over the Texans. The veteran managed to avoid surgery and IR, while his return should be a boost to an ailing Ravens secondary.
Sep 27, 2023
Returns to practice
Williams (pectoral) practiced Wednesday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams avoided IR and surgery despite suffering what was initially believed to be a torn pectoral muscle in the team's Week 1 win over the Texans. It's still not known whether he was able to log a full or limited one, or how likely it is he'll suit up Sunday against the Browns. However, it is clearly a step in a positive direction for the veteran safety.
Sep 23, 2023
Out Week 3
Williams (pectoral) will not play in Sunday's matchup with the Colts.
ANALYSIS
After sitting out practice all week, it is not surprising to see Williams get scratched for Week 3. The absence will be his second straight after he went down in Week 1, which means Geno Stone could again be in line for an increased role. The safety will now focus on recovering in time for a potential Week 4 return.
Sep 18, 2023
Expected to avoid IR
Williams (pectoral) will not undergo surgery or be placed on injured reserve, according to head coach John Harbaugh, Jonas Shaffer of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This would seem to be good news for Williams and the Ravens defense, although there is no current timetable for his return. However, one can assume if he is avoiding IR, then the team believes he may not need to miss four more weeks. The veteran safety suffered the injury Week 1 and did not suit up in Sunday's win over the Bengals with Geno Stone starting in his place.
Sep 11, 2023
Expected to miss extended time
Williams will be out for "a while" and is considering surgery after sustaining a pectoral injury during Sunday's 25-9 win versus Houston, Sherree Burruss of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
If there's any good news for Williams, it's that the injury may not end his season entirely. With that being said, the loss of their starting free safety for the foreseeable future represents a big blow to an already-banged-up Baltimore secondary. 2021 third-rounder Brandon Stephens will probably step in to start alongside Kyle Hamilton until Williams is healthy enough to return.
Sep 10, 2023
Significant injury feared
Williams may have suffered a torn pec in Sunday's 25-9 win over the Texans, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams will still undergo an MRI to confirm the injury; however, if true, it'd be a significant blow to Baltimore's defense. If he does miss time, Brandon Stephens and Geno Stone will be called upon to step up in the secondary.
Sep 10, 2023
Will undergo testing
Williams will need an MRI after suffering a shoulder injury in Sunday's 25-9 win over the Texans, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams suffered the injury in the first half and was ultimately ruled out for the remainder of the game a short while later. The team will likely have a better idea of his ability to suit up for Week 2 against the Bengals after the results come in.
Sep 10, 2023
Won't return Sunday
Williams (shoulder) was ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game versus the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Williams sustained a shoulder injury in the first half, which will sidelined him for the remainder of the Ravens' season opener. The exact nature and severity of this issue are still unknown, leaving the safety's status up in the air for the Week 2 road matchup versus Cincinnati on Sunday, Sept. 17.
Sep 10, 2023
Exits versus Houston
Williams (shoulder) is questionable to return to Sunday's game versus the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Williams collected four tackles (three solo) before sustaining a shoulder injury at some point during the first half. The seventh-year safety was a major contributor when healthy for Baltimore last season, totaling 61 tackles, eight passes defended and four interceptions across just 10 games. With Williams sidelined, Brandon Stephens and Geno Stone will likely step up into bigger roles alongside starting strong safety Kyle Hamilton.
Jan 4, 2023
Busy day in loss
Williams posted nine tackles (five solo) and one pass defense during Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Williams tied Roquan Smith with nine tackles, which was good for second on the team behind Chuck Clark. Across nine appearances, Williams has totaled 54 tackles, seven pass defenses, four interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Dec 10, 2022
Returns to active roster
The Ravens activated Williams (wrist) from injured reserve Saturday ahead of Sunday's game against the Steelers, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams suffered a wrist injury Week 5 that sidelined him on IR until he was designated to return to practice Nov. 23. While he was activated in time to play against Denver in Week 13, he now appears set to reprise a starting role in the Ravens' previously undermanned secondary. Williams recorded 33 tackles, five passes defended and three interceptions going down Week 5, and he should return to his every-down role alongside Chuck Clark on Sunday.
Dec 2, 2022
Will have to wait another week
Head coach John Harbaugh said Friday that Williams (wrist) won't be activated off injured reserve for Sunday's game against the Broncos, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams is now slated to miss his seventh contest in a row due to the dislocated wrist he suffered back in Week 5. The 26-year-old was designated to return from injured reserve Nov. 23, and though he won't suit up this weekend, coach Harbaugh noted that Williams could be in play for Baltimore's divisional matchup in Pittsburgh the following week, per Hensley. As for this Sunday, Geno Stone and Chuck Clark are expected to continue operating as the team's two starting safeties.
Nov 23, 2022
Designated to return from IR
Williams (wrist) has been designated to return from injured reserve and will practice Wednesday, Clifton Brown of the Ravens' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams has been on IR since dislocating his wrist in Week 5, but with the move, the Ravens open a 21-day window for the safety to be added to the active roster. When available, Williams figures to garner a prominent role in Baltimore's injury-depleted secondary.
Nov 8, 2022
Marking progress
Head coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday that he is hopeful to have Marcus Williams (wrist) back in December, Jonas Shaffer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams dislocated his wrist in Week 5 against the Bengals, and he was placed on IR the next day, Oct. 10. Although no official timetable for his return was given at the time, he wasn't expected to miss the remainder of the season, so a December return makes sense. The veteran safety's eventual return will certainly be a boon to the team's defense, which has dealt with numerous injuries this season.
Oct 10, 2022
Headed to IR
The Ravens placed Williams (wrist) on injured reserve Monday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams dislocated his wrist during Sunday's primetime win over the Bengals and will be sidelined for at least four games after landing on injured reserve. It's possible Williams misses even more time, but Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said the issue shouldn't be season ending. In Williams' absence, expect rookie Kyle Hamilton to step into a starting role.
Oct 10, 2022
Expected to miss extended time
Williams suffered a dislocated wrist in Sunday's Week 5 win over the Bengals, Ryan Mink of the Ravens' official website reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams is expected to miss a "significant" amount of time according to head coach John Harbaugh following the wrist injury. It's a big blow for the Ravens' secondary after the safety posted 33 tackles, five pass deflections and three interceptions while recovering a fumble over the first five weeks. In his absence, rookie Kyle Hamilton will likely step into a starting role.
Oct 9, 2022
Ruled out for game
Williams (wrist) has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
The Ravens announced Williams' wrist injury shortly after halftime Sunday and classified him as doubtful to return, so it isn't very surprising to see him downgraded to out. His next chance to return will be next Sunday against the Giants.
Oct 9, 2022
Doubtful to return
Williams is doubtful to return to Sunday's game against the Bengals due to a wrist injury.
ANALYSIS
Williams totaled two solo tackles to begin Sunday's matchup, but he was labeled as doubtful to return shortly after halftime. Assuming Williams is unable to return, Kyle Hamilton should see increased playing time to close out the game.
Sep 21, 2022
Adds two more INTs in Week 2
Williams totaled 10 tackles (seven solo) and two interceptions during Sunday's loss to the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Williams backed up his 12-tackle, one-interception performance in the season opener with another stellar outing in Week 2. The 25-year-old defensive back picked off Tua Tagovailoa on the first drive off the game and added another interception at the end of the second quarter before the quarterback diced up Baltimore's secondary in the second half. Williams leads his new team in tackles through two games and is only one interception shy of his career-high four, which he's done twice during his six-year career.
Sep 12, 2022
Do-it-all role in team debut
Williams recorded 12 tackles (10 solo) and one interception in his first game with the Ravens on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Williams led Baltimore in tackles during his first game as one of the team's starting safeties Sunday, playing all 84 of the team's defensive snaps. The 25-year-old also intercepted Jets quarterback Joe Flacco in the first quarter. Williams' impressive debut could be an early sign of his potentially starring role within the Ravens' secondary in 2022.
Mar 15, 2022
Signs huge deal with Baltimore
Williams has agreed to a five-year, $70 million contract with the Ravens, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After playing under a franchise tag in New Orleans last season, Williams will head to Baltimore to replace fellow free agent DeShon Elliott (pectoral) as the Ravens' starting free safety. A 2017 second-round pick, Williams started 14 or more games in each of his five seasons with the Saints, averaging 64 tackles, 7.6 pass defenses and 3.0 interceptions per season. He earned a top-10 PFF grade among safeties for four of those five campaigns, and he's one of the younger players from the 2017 draft class (he'll turn 26 in September, a few days before Baltimore's season opener).
Jan 17, 2022
Plays well on franchise tag
Williams registered 74 tackles, eight pass breakups, two interceptions and one forced fumble over 16 games in 2021.
ANALYSIS
While his numbers aren't great for IDP purposes, Williams kept establishing himself as a top free safety in the league while setting a new career high in tackles along the way. Retaining his services will seemingly be a top priority for New Orleans this offseason. However, it's fair to wonder if the 25-year-old priced himself outside of its budget considering the team is currently projected to be $60 million over the salary cap. If he does take his talents elsewhere, it would be a big hit to a Saints defense that allowed the sixth-lost completion rate in 2021.
Jan 5, 2022
Ready for Week 18
Williams was a full participant at Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
The safety was not on the injury report to open the week Wednesday after missing Week 17 while dealing with COVID-19. Williams will return just in time to return to his starting role in the Saints' secondary ahead of a must-win Week 18 game versus the Falcons.
Jan 2, 2022
Won't play Sunday
Williams (illness) has been ruled out for Sunday's contest against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Williams was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, but he was listed as questionable and has now been ruled out for Week 17. In his absence, P.J. Williams is expected to draw the start at free safety.
Jan 1, 2022
Questionable for Week 17
Williams (illness) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday but remains questionable for Sunday's game against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
That may mean that Williams has yet to clear the league's health and safety protocols in regards to testing negative. If he's unable to play, P.J. Williams would likely step in at free safety.
Dec 29, 2021
Lands on COVID list
Williams (undisclosed) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, John Sigler of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
The Saints returned numerous players from the COVID-19 list Wednesday, but Williams is now caught in the health and safety protocols. His availability for Sunday's matchup with the Panthers is now up in the air. P.J. Williams could be more involved in the secondary if Marcus Williams is unable to play Week 17.
