ANALYSIS
Sweat now has 5.5 sacks this season, and he's recorded at least 1.0 sacks in each of his last four contests. His frequent backfield impact keeps him a sack-dependent but highly valuable IDP option on the defensive line.
Nov 2, 2025
Records sack in victory
Sweat logged two tackles (two solo), including 1.0 sacks and one tackle for loss, in the Bears' 47-42 win over the Bengals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS

Oct 26, 2025
Adds sack in loss
Sweat posted seven tackles, including 1.0 sack and one tackle for loss, in the Bears' 30-16 loss to the Ravens on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat registered a sack for the second straight week, and he now has 3.0 sacks on the season. However, his seven tackles is the first time Sweat has had more than four in any game. He remains a sack-dependent IDP with a moderate sack floor.
Oct 21, 2025
Strong outing in win
Sweat logged four tackles (four solo), including 1.0 sacks, during Chicago's win over the Saints on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat had a strong performance in the victory, matching his season-high tackle total while also recording his second sack. The 29-year-old got off to a slow start this season but will look to carry this momentum into the team's Week 8 matchup versus Baltimore.
Oct 19, 2025
Records sack in victory
Sweat posted four tackles and one sack in the Bears' 26-14 win over the Saints on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat has two sacks this season while averaging three tackles per game. He remains a weekly IDP starter with balanced production.
Sep 22, 2025
First sack of season
Sweat posted 1.0 sacks and two tackles in the Bears' 31-14 win over the Cowboys on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat is averaging 2.66 tackles per game and finally found the sack column. Although the veteran has been a weak IDP option, he could go on a streak of games with sacks at any time, making him a boom-or-bust fantasy option.
Jan 6, 2025
Lowest sack total since 2021
Sweat tallied one stop in the Bears 24-22 win over the Packers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was coming off a career year in 2023, when he posted 57 tackles and 12.5 sacks when he played for both the Commanders and the Bears. This year, the veteran recorded 32 tackles and 5.5 sacks, which represented his lowest career total on a per-game basis in each category. The pass rusher is signed with the Bears through 2027.
Nov 24, 2024
First sack since Week 8
Sweat tallied 1.0 sacks and four stops in the Bears' 30-27 overtime loss to the Vikings on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat has 4.5 sacks in 2024. However, the defensive end is averaging 2.1 tackles per contest. That makes the veteran a sack-dependent IDP.
Nov 17, 2024
Good to go Sunday
Sweat (ankle) is active for Sunday's game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
After not practicing Wednesday, Sweat was a limited participant Thursday and logged a full session Friday, putting him on track to play against the Packers, who are coming off their bye week. On the season, Sweat has 16 tackles (10 solo), including 3.5 sacks, seven QB hits, two pass breakups and one forced fumble.
Nov 15, 2024
Questionable versus Green Bay
Sweat (ankle) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
After logging a DNP on Wednesday, Sweat got in a limited sessions Thursday and full practice Friday, putting him on a good track to play Sunday. He'd previously been battling a shin issue that cost him the Bears' Week 9 contest. On the season, Sweat has 16 tackles (10 solo), including 3.5 sacks, seven QB hits, two pass breakups and one forced fumble.
Nov 14, 2024
Returns to practice Thursday
Sweat (ankle) was listed as a limited practice participant on Thursday's injury report.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was held out of Wednesday's session due to an ankle issue, but he was able to return to practice Thursday, albeit in a limited capacity. If Sweat is able to log at least a limited practice Friday, he should be able to suit up Sunday against the Packers. Across eight regular-season games, the 2019 first-round pick has registered 16 tackles (10 solo), including 3.5 sacks, two pass defenses and one forced fumble.
Nov 13, 2024
Not at practice Wednesday
Sweat (ankle) did not participate at practice Wednesday, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat has been playing through a shin injury, and now he's tending to an ankle issue as well. He'll probably have to practice in some capacity Thursday or Friday to have a chance to play in Week 11.
Nov 7, 2024
Upgraded to full Thursday
Sweat (shin) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Sweat missed last week's loss to the Cardinals but appears on track to return for Week 10 versus New England. On the season, Sweat has 15 tackles (10 solo), including 3.5 sacks, six QB hits, two pass deflections and one forced fumble.
Nov 6, 2024
Limited to start week
Sweat (shin) logged a limited practice Wednesday, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat missed Sunday's game against the Cardinals with the injury and will start the practice week looking iffy for Week 10 against the Patriots. He'll try to amp up his activity Thursday or Friday, in an effort to increase his likelihood of suiting up this week.
Nov 3, 2024
Inactive against Arizona
Sweat (shin) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
After logging a limited practice Thursday, Sweat was downgraded to DNP on Friday and was given the questionable tag. With Sweat out, Darrell Taylor should see increased reps off the edge for Chicago.
Nov 1, 2024
Questionable for Week 9
Sweat (shin) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Sweat downgraded from practicing in a limited fashion Thursday to a DNP on Friday, suggesting he could be on the wrong side of questionable in Week 9. The 2019 first-round pick is an integral part of Chicago's defense, recording 15 total tackles, including 3.5 sacks, and defending two passes through the team's first seven games. If he can't suit up Sunday, expect Darrell Taylor to serve as one of the Bears' top edge rushers.
Oct 31, 2024
Limited in Thursday's practice
Sweat (shin) was a limited practice participant Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat injured his shin during the Bears' Week 8 loss to the Commanders. He wasn't able to practice Wednesday, but he's trending in the right direction by practicing Thursday, albeit in a limited fashion. Friday's injury report will provide clarity on Sweat's status ahead against the Cardinals on Sunday. If Sweat cannot play, Darrell Taylor and rookie fifth-rounder Austin Booker would be candidates to see more snaps at defensive end alongside starter DeMarcus Walker.
Oct 30, 2024
Still tending to injury
Sweat (shin) did not practice Wednesday, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat exited Sunday's loss to the Commanders with the injury and was unable to return. He'll still have Thursday and Friday to get back on the field before Sunday's matchup with the Cardinals. If he's unable to do so, the Mississippi State product likely won't be active for Week 9.
Oct 27, 2024
Questionable to return
Sweat (shin) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Commanders, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The defensive end made four tackles (three solo), including 1.0 sacks and two tackles for losses, before exiting. Sweat came into the day with 11 tackles (seven solo), including 2.5 sacks, two pass breakups and a forced fumble on the year. Darrell Taylor and Austin Booker are Chicago's backup defensive ends.
Oct 13, 2024
Back in sack column
Sweat posted 2.5 tackles and half a sack in the Bears' 35-16 win over the Jaguars on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat has recorded at least half a sack in three of the last four games and now has 2.5 on the season. However, with one performance of more than three tackles, Sweat remains a sack-dependent IDP option.
Sep 29, 2024
Collects second sack of season
Sweat recorded three tackles and a sack in the Bears' 24-18 win over the Rams on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat is averaging two tackles per game, but he now has sacks in back-to-back contests. Sweat remains a sack-dependent IDP with a low ceiling in terms of tackles.
Sep 22, 2024
First sack of 2024
Sweat tallied a sack and four tackles in the Bears' 21-16 loss to the Colts on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
After a strong finish to the 2023 season when Sweat had six sacks in seven games, it took the veteran pass rusher three games to collect his first sack of the season. With just six tackles on the season, Sweat will need to heat up in the sack column to have strong IDP value.
Sep 20, 2024
Slated to play Sunday
Sweat (elbow) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Colts and is expected to play.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday but was upgraded to full Friday and is set to go versus Indy. The 28-year-old is still looking for his first sack of the season after totaling a career-best 12.5 of them with the Commanders and Bears last season.
Sep 18, 2024
Limited Wednesday
Sweat (elbow) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Chicago's star edge rusher now appears to be dealing with an elbow injury after playing through a toe issue in the Bears' Week 2 loss. Sweat's practice participation Thursday and Friday will likely provide a better indication of his availability for the Bears' Week 3 matchup with the Colts.
Sep 8, 2024
Active Sunday
Sweat (toe) is active for Sunday's game against the Titans.
ANALYSIS
The Pro Bowl defensive end was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice before being elevated to full participant by Friday. Sweat recorded 12.5 sacks in 2023 between his time with the Commanders and Bears, and made his first Pro Bowl. He's played every regular-season game in all but one of his seasons.
Sep 6, 2024
Full go Friday
Sweat (toe) was a full participant in Friday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Despite Sweat's full participation in Friday's practice, he's listed as questionable for Sunday's Week 1 contest against the Titans. If Chicago's star edge rusher is unable to suit up, expect Darrell Taylor (foot) or Austin Booker to step in and work with the Bears' first-team defense.
Sep 4, 2024
Limited with toe injury
Sweat was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice session due to a toe injury.
ANALYSIS
Given he was able to suit up for practice and participate in some drills, Sweat should be good to go for the Bears' regular-season opener against the Titans on Sunday. The 2019 first-round pick was acquired by the Bears in a trade with the Commanders before last year's trade deadline. Over his nine regular-season games with Chicago last season, Sweat posted 25 tackles (17 solo), including 6.0 sacks, three passes defended and one forced fumble.
Aug 6, 2024
Enters first full year in Chicago
Sweat had a career year in 2023 with 12.5 sacks and will look to build on that total after a full offseason with the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was sent from Washington to Chicago in a mid-season trade last year, and he was a dominant pass rusher the entire season. The Bears signed their pass rusher through 2027, and Sweat should remain an excellent IDP in the emerging Chicago defense led by excellent defensive coach Matt Eberflus.
Jan 8, 2024
Finishes career year
Sweat recorded three tackles in the Bears' 17-9 loss to the Packers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was sent from Washington to Chicago in a mid-season trade, and he was a dominant pass rusher the entire season. The fifth-year player posted career highs with 57 tackles and 12.5 sacks. He also added a pair of forced fumbles. After acquiring Sweat, the Bears signed him through 2027, and he should remain an excellent IDP in the emerging Chicago defense.
Dec 17, 2023
Dominant in loss
Sweat tallied 2.5 sacks and nine tackles in the Bears' 20-17 loss to the Browns on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat has been an outstanding producer since joining the Bears in mid-season, and he has six sacks over the last four games. Outside of the sacks, he has 15 tackles over the last two games, which is his best two-game stretch of the season. He is currently one of the top IDPs at defensive end, and with upcoming matchups against. the Cardinals and Falcons, Sweat's hot streak could continue.
Dec 10, 2023
Third straight game with sack
Sweat tallied a sack and six tackles in the Bears' 28-13 win over the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Since coming over to Chicago, Sweat has 3.5 tackles in four games, and he has 9.5 on the season. His typical tackle totals were higher when he was with Washington, but his consistent ability to generate sacks makes him a strong IDP option.
Nov 28, 2023
Another strong outing
Sweat tallied four tackles and 1.5 sacks in the Bears' 12-10 win over the Vikings on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat has made an immediate impact with the Bears with 2.5 sacks over the last two games, and he now has nine sacks on the season. However, his tackle totals are lower than when Sweat was with Washington. In his current situation, he's a sack-dependent IDP.
Nov 19, 2023
Records first sack with Chicago
Sweat notched a sack and three tackles in the Bears' 31-26 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat has seen a significant decrease in his tackle totals since leaving Washington after Week 8. While with the Commanders, the veteran had at least five stops in three of his last four games. With his new team, he has a total of five tackles over three games. Unless his role in the run game improves, he'll be a sack-dependent IDP.
Nov 4, 2023
Signs massive extension
Sweat agreed to a four-year, $98 million extension with Chicago on Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bears traded a 2024 second-round pick for Sweat on Tuesday, and the team wasted no time extending its new edge rusher. Sweat's new deal includes almost $73 million guaranteed, and it will kick in at the beginning of the 2024 season. The 2019 first-round pick has been a productive pass rusher since entering the league, recording 35.5 sacks in 67 appearances. Sweat's annual salary of $24.5 million makes him the fifth-highest paid edge rusher in the NFL, and he's expected to help fortify a Bears defense that's struggled to get after the quarterback for years to come.
Oct 31, 2023
Dealt to Chicago
The Bears acquired Sweat from the Commanders on Tuesday in exchange for a 2024 second-round draft pick, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Though they don't fit the mold of a typical "buyer" at the trade deadline, the 2-6 Bears had a clear need for pass-rushing help, as the team ranks dead last in the NFL with 10 sacks through the first eight weeks of the season. Sweat provides Chicago with a real threat on the edge, and though he's in the final year of his rookie deal, a strong finish to the 2023 campaign could prompt the Bears to use their franchise tag on him this offseason and/or sign him to a long-term deal. Sweat had recorded 32 tackles, 6.5 sacks and two forced fumbles through the Commanders' first eight games, putting him on pace to set career highs in all three categories.
Oct 30, 2023
Has another sack Week 8
Sweat had five tackles (three solo) including a sack in Sunday's 38-31 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Sweat now has 6.5 sacks in eight games this season which leads the Commanders' defense and tied for eighth in the NFL. Sweat and fellow lineman Chase Young have had their names involved in trade rumors all season long and Sunday's contest shows what each of the two youngsters have to offer for teams in need of elite pass-rushing talent. Sweat is well on his way to surpassing his career-high nine sacks in the 2020 season.
Oct 23, 2023
Seven tackles, sack in loss
Sweat logged seven tackles (three solo), including a sack, in Washington's 14-7 loss to the Giants on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat finished tied for second on the team in both tackles and sack in what was his most productive outing of the season. The 2019 first-round pick has 27 tackles (18 solo) and 5.5 sacks through seven games and is currently on pace to set new career highs in both categories.
Oct 19, 2023
Practicing in full Thursday
Sweat (finger) was a full participant at practice Thursday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite spraining his thumb Sunday at Atlanta, Sweat seems to be on track to suit up for Week 7. He's been a problem for opposing quarterbacks through six games this season, and he'll try to create more chaos in the backfield when Washington travels to take on the Giants.
Oct 18, 2023
Limited practice Wednesday
Sweat (finger) was a limited participant at the Commanders' practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat suffered a sprained thumb in Washington's 24-16 win over the Falcons in Week 6 and he was forced to exit the contest early. The defensive end's ability to practice, albeit in limited fashion, bodes well for his chances to play Sunday versus New York. Sweat will have two more sessions this week to work up to a full workload.
Oct 16, 2023
Believed to have sprained thumb
Sweat is believed to have sustained a sprained thumb during Sunday's 24-16 win at Atlanta, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat is still set to undergo further testing, but the initial diagnosis represents a positive development after he was forced out of Washington's win in Week 6 early. The Commanders' injury reports during the week will signal whether he has a chance to suit back up in Week 7 at the Giants.
Oct 15, 2023
Avoids major injury
The X-Rays on Sweat's thumb came back negative Sunday and he is believed to have avoided a major injury, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat hurt his thumb during the Commanders' 24-16 win versus the Falcons on Sunday, but the injury is not thought to be severe. While there is currently no timetable on the 2019 first-round pick's return, Casey Toohill should start in his place if Sweat ends up missing time.
Oct 15, 2023
Exits game with thumb injury
Sweat is questionable to return to Sunday's contest against the Falcons due to a thumb injury.
ANALYSIS
Sweat registered a solo tackle before exiting Sunday's game. Casey Toohill will see an increased workload on the defensive line in Sweat's absence.
Oct 9, 2023
Picks up 1.5 sacks Week 5
Sweat tallied six tackles (four solo), including 1.5 sacks, in Thursday's loss to Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Sweat sacked Justin Fields for a four-yard loss on the Bears' first drive of the contest and added a half-sack of Fields in the second quarter. The veteran also finished with 1.5 sacks in each of his first two games of the campaign before being shut out in that department in Weeks 3 and 4. With 4.5 total sacks on the season, Sweat is already halfway to his career-best mark of nine set in 2020.
Sep 19, 2023
Four tackles, including 1.5 sacks
Sweat recorded four tackles (two solo), including one and a half sacks, in Sunday's 35-33 win over the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was once again able to bring down the opposing quarterback in Week 2, raising his season sack to total to three after just two games. The defensive end posted a career-high nine sacks in 2020, which he will easily surpass if he remains as disruptive as he's been to this point moving forward.
Sep 12, 2023
Causes two turnovers in win
Sweat registered five tackles (four solo and two for a loss), 1.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in Sunday's 20-16 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Sweat picked up where he left off last season as he was responsible for two fumbles by quarterback Joshua Dobbs, the second of which came off a crucial strip that allowed the Commanders to gain possession and extend their lead. Sweat is part of a formidable defensive line alongside Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen that will only get stronger once 2020 first-round pick Chase Young (neck) returns. The Commanders will hit the road for Week 2 against the Broncos on Sunday.
Sep 3, 2023
Among leaders on tough D-line
Sweat is part of a defensive line that's expected to lead Washington's defense, The Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The D-line has been the focus ever since Sweat landed in Washington in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and it got even more attention when the Commanders took Chase Young (neck) second overall the following year. Both edge rushers are now entering contract years, with Sweat playing under the fifth-year option and Young's option having been declined. While not quite dominant, Sweat has been the better of the two so far, recording between five and nine sacks each season while lingering around a rate of one sack every other game. There were some signs last year that he could be headed for double-digits in the near future, as Sweat's 28 QB hits were easily a career high and his 31 pressures tied a previous best.
Jan 22, 2023
Productive 2022 season
Sweat started all 17 games during the 2022 season and compiled 46 tackles (27 solo) and eight sacks.
ANALYSIS
Sweat had another solid season as he finished second on the Commanders in sacks and third in tackles for loss (14). The 2019 first-round pick played 70 percent of the defensive snaps, the most among any of the Washington defensive ends. As 2023 is the last year of his rookie contract, Sweat will look to maintain this level of production next season in order to get a big pay day.
Dec 15, 2022
Upgrades to full participant
Sweat (concussion) logged a full practice Thursday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was able to ramp up his activity level after logging a limited practice Wednesday. Whether he is still in concussion protocols or not is unclear, but it does appear he is trending in the right direction to play Sunday against the Giants.
Dec 14, 2022
Returns to practice
Sweat (concussion) logged a limited practice Wednesday, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat is still clearing the hurdles of concussion protocols, but his ability to return to the practice field is evidence he is trending in the right direction. However, it doesn't guarantee he'll be able to gain clearance to play ahead of Sunday's game with the Giants.
Dec 13, 2022
Remains in protocols
Sweat is still in concussion protocols, but he's expected to return to practice Wednesday or Thursday, Matthew Paras of The Washington Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat suffered a concussion in Week 13's tie with the Giants, but he was unable to gain clearance during the team's Week 14 bye and remains in protocols. However, a return to practice later this week would leave open the possibility for him to suit up Sunday in a rematch with the Giants. With James Smith-Williams still in concussion protocols as well, and Chase Young's debut date still a moving target, the Commanders face the possibility of being light on depth on the edges if Sweat is unable to play.
Dec 4, 2022
Leaves with injury
Sweat is being evaluated for a concussion Sunday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat left Sunday's game against the Giants early and did not appear to return before the game ended in a 20-20 tie. Whether or not Sweat did suffer a concussion is still unknown. If he did, he'll have extra time to recover with the Commanders headed into a Week 14 bye, before they play the Giants again in Week 15.
Nov 21, 2022
Multi-sack performance in win
Sweat registered three solo tackles, including two sacks, in the 23-10 win over the Texans on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat swallowed up Davis Mills for a sack in both the second quarter and the third, producing his second two-sack performance of the year. The 26-year-old has now compiled three sacks over the last two games and is up to six total on the campaign. Overall, Sweat has recorded 31 tackles, including the six sacks, while deflecting two passes over 11 contests this season.
Oct 16, 2022
Gets a sack in Thursday's win
Sweat recorded six tackles (three solo) and one sack during Thursday's 12-7 win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Sweat now has three sacks over the team's last two contests, after he failed to record one throughout the first four weeks. The speedy pass rusher continues to play around 70 percent of Washington's defensive snaps, and he'll likely operate in a similar role next Sunday versus Green Bay.
Oct 11, 2022
Logs two sacks Sunday
Sweat recorded six tackles (five solo) and two sacks during Sunday's 21-17 loss to the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Sweat's two sacks Sunday was the first time the speedy defensive end got home to a quarterback dating back to Week 15 against Philadelphia a season ago. The 26-year-old has had a slow start to begin the 2022 campaign, but he'll attempt to keep momentum churning in Thursday's contest in Chicago.
Apr 27, 2022
Contract option exercised
The Commanders have exercised Sweat's fifth-year contract option.
ANALYSIS
As a result, the 2019 first-rounder is under contract with the team through 2023. This coming season, Sweat is set to reprise his starting defensive end duties opposite Chase Young. The 25-year-old is coming off a 2021 campaign in which he recorded 24 tackles, five sacks and three forced fumbles in 10 games.
Jan 7, 2022
Out season finale
Sweat (personal) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Giants, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat missed Week 17 following the death of his brother and won't be back for the final game of the season. He finishes 2021 with 24 tackles (13 solo), five sacks and three forced fumbles in 10 games.
Jan 2, 2022
Inactive in Week 17
Sweat (personal) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
This comes as no surprise after a week in which Sweat was away from the team due to the death of his brother. He'll thus sit out for the sixth time in eight games, with the previous five absences chalked up to a broken jaw and a bout with COVID-19. Sweat's next potential game action will arrive next Sunday against the Giants.
Jan 2, 2022
Not on track to play
Sweat (personal), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles, isn't expected to play, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat didn't practice all week while he was away from the team to be with his family following the tragic death of his brother. Washington gave him the questionable tag heading into the weekend in case Sweat decided to rejoin the team, but he instead looks like he'll be out for the sixth time in eight games. Sweat previously missed time due to a fractured jaw and a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Dec 31, 2021
Questionable for Sunday
Sweat (personal) is questionable for Sunday's contest against the Eagles, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat hasn't practiced this week due to the death of his brother. It's not yet clear whether the 25-year-old will rejoin the team ahead of Sunday's game against the Eagles, but Casey Toohill and Shaka Toney would likely see increased playing time if Sweat is out.
Dec 29, 2021
Absent from Wednesday's practice
Sweat didn't participate in Wednesday's practice session for a personal reason, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was a non-participant in practice following the death of his brother. It's not yet clear whether the 25-year-old will rejoin the team ahead of Sunday's game against the Eagles, but Casey Toohill and Shaka Toney would likely see increased playing time if Sweat is out.
Dec 20, 2021
Activated from injured reserve
Sweat (jaw) was activated from injured reserve Monday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was placed on injured reserve Nov. 13 with a fractured jaw and was expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks. During his stint on IR, the 2019 first-round pick also had to traverse and clear COVID-19 protocols. However, despite the setbacks, it appears Sweat will make his return Tuesday against the Eagles. In eight games before his injury, Sweat notched 19 tackles and four sacks.
Dec 18, 2021
Designated to return
Washington has designated Sweat (jaw) to return to practice.
ANALYSIS
Sweat will now have a 21-day window to be activated by the team. He has been sidelined since mid-October after suffering a fractured jaw. He also spent time on the reserve/COVID-19 list during that span.
Dec 8, 2021
Shifts to COVID list
Washington placed Sweat (jaw) on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat has already been on IR since Nov. 13, as he's nursing a jaw injury that's expected to keep him sidelined 4-to-6 weeks. Now, the defensive end will face an additional hurdle of having to fully clear the league's protocols for COVID-19 before any chance to return to team facilities.
Nov 13, 2021
Lands on IR
Washington has placed Sweat (jaw) on injured reserve, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
SWeat is expected to be sidelined four-to-six weeks with a fractured jaw, so his trip to the IR is unsurprising. Defensive end Bunmi Rotimi was called up from the practice squad in a corresponding move, but some combination of James Smith-Williams and Shaka Toney are the likely candidates to see increased snaps in his absence.
Nov 12, 2021
Out for 4-6 weeks
Sweat (jaw) is expected to miss four-to-six weeks, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old pass rusher suffered a fractured jaw during Washington's Week 8 loss to the Broncos. Prior to that, Sweat played at least 65 percent of defensive snaps in each game this season, recording 19 tackles, 12 QB hits and four sacks in eight appearances. While Washington's defense has obviously taken a big step back compared to last year, Sweat's pass-rushing production looks pretty similar to 2020 (9.0 sacks, 20 QB hits). His absence for the next month-plus could allow James Smith-Williams to make his first career start, but there's also the option of giving DT Jonathan Allen some snaps at end.
Nov 12, 2021
Out Sunday
Sweat (jaw) will not play in Washington's Week 10 contest against the Buccaneers, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat suffered a jaw fracture during Washington's Week 8 loss to the Broncos. The defensive end is not going to need surgery but he is expected to miss at least a game. Expect Casey Toohill and Shaka Toney to see larger roles against Tampa Bay in Week 10.

Set to miss a couple of weeks
Sweat suffered a jaw fracture during Washington's Week 8 loss and is expected to miss at least the next couple of weeks, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat suffered a non-displaced fracture during Washington's loss to Denver and he is not going to need surgery. The defensive end is supposed to avoid physical contact for the next four weeks, meaning that Casey Toohill and Shaka Toney will be forced into larger roles on Washington's defensive line. Sweat could be looking at a return in early December when the Football Team takes on the Raiders in Week 13.

Busy tackling day
Sweat had five tackles (two solo) during Washington's loss to the Saints in Week 5.
ANALYSIS
Sweat had his most involved day as a run stopper of the season, though he didn't notch any other IDP-relevant stats. The third-year pro will look to make an impact versus Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in Week 6.

Records sack in win
Sweat notched two tackles (one solo) and one sack during Sunday's 34-30 win over the Falcons
ANALYSIS
Sweat has recorded a sack in three of the first four weeks of the season. The 25-year-old is on pace for his first double-digit sack season after finishing his previous two seasons in the NFL with seven and nine sacks respectively.

Takes down Jones
Sweat posted three solo tackles and a sack in Thursday's 30-29 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Sweat notched a sack for a second straight game. The 2019 first-round pick recorded 45 tackles, nine sacks and six pass breakups last season while averaging 43 snaps per game. Sweat is averaging 55 snaps so far, and his IDP value will continue to climb if he keeps up this workload.

Takes down Herbert
Sweat posted four tackles (two solo), a sack and a forced fumble in Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Sweat accounted for one of Washington's two sacks Sunday. The 2019 first-round pick generated 16 sacks over his first two NFL seasons, and he has an intriguing matchup against the Giants up next.

Off injured list
Sweat (undisclosed) isn't listed on Washington's injury list Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was forced to miss Washington's preseason opener against the Patriots with an illness but he is now off the injured list and ready to play against L.A. in Sunday's season opener. The 25-year-old is expected to see a big role with Washington's defense this season, especially if he can stay healthy.

Won't play Thursday
Sweat (illness) will not suit up for Thursday's preseason opener against the Patriots, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat is sidelined with an illness unrelated to COVID-19. The 2019 first-round pick should have a fair shot at being back in action for the August 20 preseason matchup against Cincinnati.

Leads team in sacks
Sweat had a team-high nine sacks in 2020, adding 45 tackles (28 solo), six pass defenses, two forced fumbles and an interception returned for a touchdown.
ANALYSIS
The 2019 first-round pick played 64.0 percent of Washington's defensive snaps as a rookie and 66.3 percent as a sophomore, starting all 16 games both times. The 2020 performance wasn't exactly a breakout, but Sweat did finish with two more sacks (nine) and seven more QB hits (20) than the previous year, earning PFF's 11th-best grade (80.0) out of 112 qualified edge rushers. Teammate Chase Young was No. 6, so Sweat should have plenty of one-on-one pass-rush opportunities in the seasons to come. The 24-year-old has two seasons remaining on his rookie contract, which can be extended through 2023 via the fifth-year option. It'll be an easy choice for Washington to pick up that option if Sweat's 2021 campaign looks anything like his 2020 output.

Sack on Sunday
Sweat recorded five tackles, all solo, and a sack across 56 defensive snaps in Sunday's win over the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Sweat now has 37 tackles (23 solo), seven sacks, five passes defensed, two forced fumbles and an interception across 13 games this season. He also has played in 65 percent of the defensive snaps this season.

Pick six in Thanksgiving Day victory
Sweat made two tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown in Sunday's 41-16 win over the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Sweat put the game away for Washington late in the fourth quarter as he managed to get immediate pressure on Cowboys quarterback Andy Dalton, ultimately tipping a pass up to himself and strolling into the end zone for an easy pick six. Sweat will look to carry this momentum into a tough Week 13 matchup against the currently undefeated Steelers.

Another sack Sunday
Sweat recorded three tackles (two solo) and a sack across 44 defensive snaps in Sunday's win over the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Sweat reached the quarterback for the sixth time this season, which is one sack shy of his season-total from his rookie campaign. He also has 26 tackles (17 solo) on the year, playing in only 65 percent of the defensive reps.

Good to go for Sunday
Sweat (concussion) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Giants, Kyle Stackpole of the Washington Football Team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat practiced without limitations Thursday and appears to have avoided any setbacks, leaving him good to go for this clash of NFC East rivals. The 2019 first-rounder needs two more sacks to match his rookie total of seven.

Trending in right direction
Sweat (concussion) was a full participant during Thursday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat was forced to leave Week 7's win over Dallas early due to a head injury, and he appears to be trending in the right direction following the bye week. It's unclear if the Mississippi State product has cleared concussion protocol, however, so it's too early to count on him for Sunday's game against the Giants. Ryan Anderson would see an uptick in usage at defensive end if Sweat were unable to suit up in Week 9.

Heading to medical tent
Sweat is being evaluated for a concussion after exiting Sunday's matchup against the Cowboys, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweat had been a difference-maker prior to his fourth-quarter exit, collecting three QB hits, two sacks and a forced fumble on Dallas quarterback Ben DiNucci. With Washington looking to close out a convincing home win over the Cowboys, Ryan Anderson would see an uptick in usage at defensive end if Sweat were unable to return.

Tacks on another sack
Sweat recorded eight tackles -- 1.5 for a loss -- and a sack in Sunday's 30-10 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Sweat produced a career-high for tackles in a game, doubling his total for the season. It was an outstanding effort for the 2019 first-round pick, as he now has three sacks through five games and should have a chance to hit double-digits in the category this season.
Sep 29, 2020
Notches second sack
Sweat made four tackles (three solo) and a sack in Sunday's 34-20 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Sweat now has two sacks through three games, and he's tied for second with Ryan Kerrigan and Jon Bostic in the category. Rookie Chase Young (groin) leads the team with 2.5 sacks so far, but he could miss Sunday's game against the Ravens. That could mean the Ravens can focus more on Sweat, lowering his ceiling a bit, but Washington has 12.5 sacks among seven different players this year, so that concern may be overstated.
Sep 14, 2020
Gets to QB in win
Sweat recorded two tackles, a sack and two QB hits in Sunday's 27-17 win over the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
The Eagles had to battled pressure from both sides, as Sweat and rookie Chase Young combined for 2.5 sacks and three QB hits in the season-opening win. This unheralded defense has a stacked front four with Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne as well, and they have another intriguing matchup on deck with the Cardinals in Week 2.

All clear for Sunday
Sweat (quad) has no injury designation for Sunday's game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Sweat put in two limited practices this week before upgrading to a full one Friday. He'll suit up Sunday and has yet to miss a game this season.
