Dean is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Patriots due to a foot injury, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Dean had a solid performance to begin Sunday's matchup, tallying seven tackles (four solo). However, it's unclear whether he'll be available for the final few minutes of the matchup. If he remains sidelined down the stretch, Christian Elliss and Nolan Smith are candidates to see increased playing time.

Dean missed a few days due to the injury but then was able to return in a limited fashion Wednesday. His ability to get in a full practice should mean he's fully recovered, which is good news for the Georgia product, as he looks to earn the starting middle linebacker job in camp.

The second-year pro is working to earn the starting middle-linebacker job and has some competition there after the Eagles signed Myles Jack on Sunday.

Dean is listed as day-to-day, so his absence is unlikely to be an extended one. It wouldn't be surprising to see him sit out the Aug. 12 preseason opener against the Ravens, even if Dean is fully recovered by then, as the 2022 third-round pick is slated to move into a starting linebacker spot after being used in a reserve role as a rookie.

Dean only played 33 snaps on defense last season, although he was a regular on the team's special-teams unit. Now, in his second season and after the departures of T.J. Edwards and Kyzir White, Dean will see a significant shift in responsibilities. Not only will he see the field much more frequently, but he'll also be taking on play-calling duties as the MIKE linebacker in the Eagles' defense.

A third-round pick last spring, Dean took 340 snaps on special teams but only 34 on defense as a rookie, stuck behind a trio of linebackers (T.J. Edwards, Kyzir White, Haason Reddick) that all played 17 games. Edwards and White signed elsewhere this offseason, leaving nearly 2,000 off-ball-linebacker snaps that likely will be filled by some combination of Dean, seventh-year pro Nicholas Morrow and rookie first-round pick Nolan Smith. Dean and Smith are two of the five Eagles who were part of Georgia's dominant 2021 defense, joined by CB Kelee Ringo and DTs Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter. When it comes to IDP value, Dean has a chance to take over the three-down role in which Edwards finished last season tied for seventh among linebackers in tackles (159) and pass defenses (seven).

Dean appeared in all 17 regular-season contests and posted 13 tackles across 670 total snaps (33 defensive).

The rookie third-round pick operated mostly on special teams during his first NFL campaign. If T.J. Edwards opts to leave in free agency this summer, Dean could step into a starting role in Year 2, but if Edwards returns, it may be hard for the Georgia product to find playing time in 2023.

Dean recorded six tackles (five solo) and one pass defensed in Sunday's 35-10 victory over the Titans.

Dean had not recorded more than one tackle in any other game this season, so this was certainly his most impactful outing. He was only on the field for 15 snaps (27 percent), but actually recorded five of his tackles during that span. The 21-year-old also on the field for all 23 special-teams plays.

Dean (pectoral) slotted in at linebacker with the third-team defense during Philadelphia's practice Monday, John McMullen of SI.com reports.

The rookie practiced alongside second-year linebacker JaCoby Stevens while Davion Taylor and Shaun Bradley saw action with the Eagles' second-string defense Monday. Dean was unable to participate in the combine ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft due to a pectoral injury, but he appears to be over this medical red flag given his participation in the Eagles' training camp thus far. The Butkus Award winner out of Georgia will have to prove himself at middle linebacker this preseason, however, as four-year veteran T.J. Edwards appears to be locked in as the starter at this position so far in training camp, according to McMullen.

The Eagles selected Dean (pectoral) in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 83rd overall.

Dean's slide became the story of Day 2 of the NFL Draft as the Georgia linebacker was expected to be an early second-round selection at worst. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that teams had medical red flags related to a pectoral injury that prevented him from participating at the combine. If the medicals prove to be a non-issue, this is a strong value pick for Philadelphia. Dean was the quarterback of one of the best college football defenses in recent history. His film showed that he is quick to diagnose plays and has the closing speed to find the ball carrier and finish plays. Dean is on the smaller side for an inside linebacker at 6-foot and 225 pounds, but his football IQ and athleticism will help get him on the field once healthy.
