Interim head coach Jeff Saturday said Monday that Ehlinger will start Sunday's regular season finale against the Texans, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.

With Matt Ryan benched and Nick Foles (ribs) ruled out, Ehlinger will draw his third start of the season. The 2021 sixth-round pick completed 32 of 52 passes for 304 yards and one interception across back-to-back starts in Weeks 8 and 9. After being a healthy inactive in Week 17, Ryan is expected to operate as the backup to Ehlinger during the Colts' final game of the 2022 campaign.

However, once Sunday's matchup with the Raiders arrived, it was Ryan who took the reins of the offense. Ryan completed 21 of 28 attempts for 222 yards and a touchdown while adding 38 yards and another score on the ground as the Colts claimed a 25-20 victory, putting an end to a three-game losing streak. Though the mobile Ehlinger, a 2021 sixth-round pick, has more theoretical upside than the 37-year-old Ryan at this stage of his career, the 4-5-1 Colts aren't yet ready to wave the white flag on the season and will stick with the veteran, who likely gives the team a better chance at remaining competitive.

If there is one positive to take from the effort, he was more effective on the ground and showed the potential to be a dual-threat quarterback -- which also aligns with his college profile. Ehlinger should also benefit from a softer matchup against the Raiders in Week 10.

Ehlinger completed 17 of 23 passes for 201 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 17-16 loss to the Commanders. He rushed the ball six times for 15 yards.

Ehlinger made his first NFL start and the team predictably turned to a fairly conservative offense. Nevertheless, he showed the ability to distribute the ball effectively, connecting with three different receivers for a gain of at least 20 yards. One surprise was Ehlinger's lack of effectiveness as a runner, as he racked up at least 375 rushing yards in each of his four years in college as a starter at Texas. While this performance was encouraging overall, Ehlinger will face a stiff test in Week 9 as the Colts will head to Foxboro to take on the Patriots.

While Wentz since has progressed through his rehab quicker than expected, Ehlinger remained in the mix to be the No. 2. However, Ehlinger limped off the field at the end of the first half Friday and won't return. The Colts likely won't reveal the severity of his knee injury until postgame.

Ehlinger completed eight of 13 passes for 70 yards and two interceptions during Saturday's preseason win at Minnesota. He added two carries for 11 yards.

With Carson Wentz (foot) iffy to play Week 1 and potentially beyond, the competition between Ehlinger and Eason (16-for-27 for 132 yards Saturday) could come down to the wire.

Coach Frank Reich already stated that their roles would be reversed for Saturday's preseason tilt against the Vikings. Carson Wentz's (foot) timetable is so vague that one of these youngsters -- or an outside party -- could wind up starting for the first few weeks of the regular season.
