Rejoins Pittsburgh's practice squad
Sermon signed with Pittsburgh's practice squad Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Sermon has bounced between Pittsburgh's practice squad and active roster throughout the season. He was released from the active roster Saturday but has found his way back onto the practice squad for the Steelers five days later.
Nov 12, 2025
Let go by Pittsburgh
The Steelers waived Sermon on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was signed off the Steelers' practice squad to the active roster Saturday, but the fifth-year running back has been let go by Pittsburgh just four days later. He should garner interest on the waiver wire from teams looking for another contributor on special teams who can provide depth out of the backfield.
Nov 8, 2025
Signed to active roster
The Steelers signed Sermon to the active roster from their practice squad Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Sermon had already been elevated for the maximum three games before being signed to the active roster. However, the 26-year-old has played just one offensive snap across those outings, and he should continue to see the majority of his playing time on special teams going forward.
Nov 3, 2025
Goes back to practice squad
The Steelers reverted Sermon to their practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was elevated ahead of Sunday's victory over the Colts and logged one snap on offense without getting any touches. He also recorded 19 special-teams snaps, registering one tackle in that capacity. Sermon has been elevated three times this season, so he'd need to be signed to the active roster to play again for the Steelers this season.
Nov 1, 2025
Elevated again
Sermon was elevated from the Steelers' practice squad to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Sermon will be on the active roster for the third time this season and for the first time since Week 4. Both Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell are healthy, meaning Sermon will serve in a special teams role, per Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Sep 29, 2025
Returns to practice squad
Sermon reverted to Pittsburgh's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Sermon got a gameday elevation for Sunday's matchup versus Minnesota in Dublin, Ireland. He didn't log any work on offense but did see six snaps on special teams and returned two kickoffs for 51 yards. Sermon's elevation was influenced by Jaylen Warren needing to sit out Week 4 due to a knee injury, but Warren seemingly has a good chance of being back in action for the Steelers' next game given that team has a Week 5 bye.
Sep 27, 2025
Elevated from practice squad
The Steelers elevated Sermon from their practice squad Saturday ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Sermon is set to be elevated for the second straight week and will provide extra depth at running back if Jaylen Warren is limited due to his knee injury. Sermon played exclusively on special teams during last week's victory over the Patriots and will look to have a larger role versus Minnesota. The Steelers will be able to elevate the 26-year-old just one more time this season following Sunday's matchup.
Sep 22, 2025
Reverts to practice squad
Sermon reverted to the Steelers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
All three of Sermon's snaps came on special teams as Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell handled touches out of the backfield while Kaleb Johnson was active but did not play. Sermon is eligible to be elevated to the Steelers' active roster two more times this season and that could come as soon as Week 4 against the Vikings in Dublin, Ireland, especially if Johnson continues to see limited to no playing time.
Sep 20, 2025
Elevated from practice squad
The Steelers called up Sermon from the practice squad Saturday ahead of Sunday's matchup versus the Patriots, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon will get his first chance to appear in a game this season after having joined Pittsburgh's practice squad back in August. He will likely serve as the team's No. 4 running back and could see playing time on special teams as well.
Aug 27, 2025
Joins Steelers' practice squad
Sermon signed with Pittsburgh's practice squad Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Sermon and Lew Nichols have been added to the practice squad as organizational depth behind rostered running backs Jaylen Warren, Kaleb Johnson and Kenneth Gainwell. Sermon has suited up for 42 regular-season NFL games, including all 17 with the Colts last season.
Aug 26, 2025
Let go by Pittsburgh
Sermon was released by the Steelers on Tuesday, Teresa Varley of the team's official website reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon signed with the Steelers on May 11, and despite a relatively active preseason, the 26-year-old running back was unable to secure a spot on Pittsburgh's 53-man roster behind Jaylen Warren and rookie Kaleb Johnson. The Ohio State product will now look to latch on with another team for the 2025 season.
Aug 10, 2025
Scores touchdown in preseason win
Sermon rushed three times for seven yards while securing all four of his targets for 28 yards and a touchdown during Saturday's 31-25 preseason win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
While Sermon didn't make much of an impact on the ground during Saturday's preseason opener, he tied for the team lead in targets and receptions while also reaching the end zone in the third quarter. The 2021 third-rounder signed a one-year contract with the Steelers in May and is competing with Kenneth Gainwell, Evan Hull and Lew Nichols for a spot on the 53-man roster behind Jaylen Warren and rookie Kaleb Johnson.
May 11, 2025
Set to join Pittsburgh
The Steelers are signing Sermon to a one-year contract, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was a third-round draft pick by the 49ers in 2021, but he's yet to make a major impact at the NFL level. The 26-year-old spent the past two seasons with Indianapolis, and he logged a career-high 236 offensive snaps over 17 regular-season games last year, though he averaged just 2.8 yards on 56 carries while scoring a career-high two rushing touchdowns. Sermon also logged 99 receiving yards on 16 catches and contributed on special teams late in the campaign. With Najee Harris now with the Chargers, Pittsburgh has rebuilt its running back room behind returning starter Jaylen Warren, adding both Sermon and Kenneth Gainwell in free agency along with third-round draft choice Kaleb Johnson.
Jan 21, 2025
Free agency looms
Sermon rushed 56 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns across 17 regular-season appearances with the Colts in 2024. He also secured 16 of 19 targets for 99 yards.
ANALYSIS
Sermon suited up for all 17 of Indianapolis' regular-season games but finished the year with just a 2.8 YPC mark, a significant step down in efficiency. Jonathan Taylor dominated offensive snaps in all but the three games he missed due to injury, and at times Tyler Goodson looked like a more capable No. 2 option than Sermon. With Goodson having inked a one-year extension with the Colts, Sermon could be set to walk as an unrestricted free agent.
Dec 24, 2024
Gets eight carries in win
Sermon had eight carries for 25 yards in Sunday's win over Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
Sermon had his most carries since Week 7 as he got some work with the Colts having a large lead. Jonathan Taylor had 218 yards rushing and the Colts had 335 yards rushing, so Sermon isn't likely to get many carries next week unless a similar blowout scenario happens. Sermon had minimal work the previous five weeks (1 carry total) as Taylor has received almost every touch in the backfield.
Dec 18, 2024
Three touches against Denver
Sermon rushed once for three yards and caught both of his targets for nine yards in Sunday's 31-13 loss to the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Sermon played just 18 of the Colts' 76 offensive snaps Sunday, while starter Jonathan Taylor continued to dominate the snap share with 52 snaps. The 25-year-old Sermon's rushing attempt against the Broncos in Week 15 was his first carry since Week 9. Barring an injury to Taylor, the veteran backup holds little value for fantasy purposes other than as an insurance policy. The Colts host the Titans in Week 16.
Dec 2, 2024
Opportunities remain sparse
Sermon saw five snaps on offense during the Colts' 25-24 win over the Patriots on Sunday, but he didn't receive a carry or target.
ANALYSIS
Sermon continues to see little opportunity in a backfield dominated by Jonathan Taylor. The Ohio State product hasn't had a carry since Week 9, or a target in either of the team's last two contests. However, he was involved in the return game and had a 23-yard kick return Sunday. Indianapolis has a Week 14 bye, but Sermon will be back on the field in Week 15 against Denver, but with likely limited opportunities, unless Taylor suffers an injury.
Nov 25, 2024
Limited opportunity in loss
Sermon saw just two snaps on offense and five on special teams in Sunday's 24-6 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Sermon rarely saw the field as Jonathan Taylor played 96 percent of the Colts' offensive snaps, leaving little to no opportunities for the rest of the team's backfield. It was the first time since Week 1 that Sermon didn't get at least a target or carry.
Nov 18, 2024
Sparse playing time in win
Sermon had one reception for three yards on his only target and did not have a carry in Sunday's win at the Jets.
ANALYSIS
He played just five snaps on offense as Jonathan Taylor played on 63 of the offense's 70 snaps. Sermon did play more snaps than Tyler Goodson (two snaps) but it may be Goodson that has more of a role as a pass catcher if the Colts fall far behind. Either way, neither Sermon or Goodson currently has much of a role if Taylor is fully healthy.
Nov 11, 2024
Plays just two snaps in loss
Sermon did not have a carry but had one reception for four yards in Sunday's loss to Buffalo. He played just two snaps on offense.
ANALYSIS
Sermon has fallen behind Tyler Goodson in the competition for playing time behind Jonathan Taylor. However, Goodson played just nine snaps as Taylor played on 84% of the offense's snaps and was on the field late in the game despite the Colts falling far behind. Both trends don't bode well for Sermon's usage when all three backs are healthy.
Nov 6, 2024
Limited role against Minnesota
Sermon rushed twice for four yards and caught one of two targets for nine yards in Sunday's 21-13 loss to the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Sermon played just 14 of the Colts' 54 offensive snaps Sunday, behind starter Jonathan Taylor (39) and Tyler Goodson (1). The 25-year-old operated in a minimal role as the Colts' No. 2 running back, and he should continue to see limited opportunities as long as Taylor can stay healthy. Sermon and the Colts will host the Bills in Week 10.
Oct 28, 2024
Back to limited role on offense
Sermon had one reception for 14 yards and no carries in Sunday's loss at Houston.
ANALYSIS
With the return of Jonathan Taylor from an ankle injury, Sermon moved to a limited backup role. He played on just 10 of the offense's 64 snaps while Taylor played on 52 snaps and Tyler Goodson played on two snaps. Sermon will likely have a minimal role while Taylor is healthy.
Oct 20, 2024
Takes back seat Sunday
Sermon carried the ball eight times for 36 yards and caught his only target for 13 yards in Sunday's 16-10 win over the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
With Jonathan Taylor (ankle) still sidelined, Sermon got the start in the Colts' backfield but surprisingly played second fiddle to Tyler Goodson -- Goodson saw 14 carries and turned them into 51 yards and his first career TD. Taylor could be back in Week 8 against the Texans, but if he's not ready to go, coach Shane Steichen might decide to ride the hot hand between Sermon and Goodson again, making both backs volatile fantasy options.
Oct 18, 2024
Set to play Sunday
Sermon (knee) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Sermon has benefited the last two contests with Jonathan Taylor (ankle) sidelined, at least in terms of touches (34 in all), but his efficiency has been lacking to the tune of 2.4 yards per carry and 4.2 yards per catch. Sermon also tended to first a collarbone injury during Week 6 prep and then a knee issue this week, but he was able to increase his activity level from none Wednesday to some Thursday before Friday's full practice. With Taylor out again Sunday, Sermon seems to be the top candidate to pace the Colts backfield, but Tyler Goodson has been far more productive during Taylor's absence, turning 20 touches into 122 yards from scrimmage. Indianapolis also has Evan Hull on the active roster and Salvon Ahmed and Trent Pennix on the practice squad, but the trio have combined for no snaps in any facet this season.
Oct 17, 2024
Limited at practice Thursday
Sermon (knee) returned to a limited practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After missing Wednesday's session, Sermon's return to the field -- albeit in a limited capacity -- a day later has him trending in the right direction ahead of Sunday's game against the Dolphins. If Sermon is able to practice fully Friday, he could head into the weekend without an injury designation, with his Week 7 status of particular import due to Jonathan Taylor's (ankle) continued absence from practice.
Oct 17, 2024
Back at practice
Sermon (knee) returned to practice Thursday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon missed Wednesday's session, but his return to the field one day later bodes well for his chances of suiting up Sunday against the Dolphins. With Jonathan Taylor (ankle) still sidelined Thursday, Sermon appears to be in a position to continue to see an expanded workload this weekend, provided his knee issue doesn't affect his Week 7 availability.
Oct 16, 2024
Not practicing to start week
Sermon (knee) isn't practicing Wednesday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Neither is Jonathan Taylor, whose absence the past two weeks due to an ankle injury allowed Sermon to make back-to-back starts and take 16 and 18 touches. Sermon apparently came out of Sunday's 20-17 win over the Titans with a knee injury, although he was still getting carries up until the final minute of the game. He's averaging just 2.6 YPC as the starter 2.5 for the season, perhaps opening the door for Tyler Goodson to get more carries if Taylor is out for another week. Goodson could really be busy if both Taylor and Sermon end up missing Sunday's game against Miami.
Oct 16, 2024
Contending with knee issue
Sermon is dealing with a knee injury ahead of Sunday's game against the Dolphins, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With top back Jonathan Taylor having missed time with an ankle injury and Sermon now contending with an ankle issue, the Colts signed Salvon Ahmed to their practice squad Wednesday, bolstering the depth of a backfield that also includes Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull. The team's upcoming practice report will provide added context with regard to Taylor and Sermon's Week 7 status by clarifying their participation level.
Oct 13, 2024
Struggles for yardage Sunday
Sermon rushed 18 times for 29 yards and wasn't targeted in the Colts' 20-17 win over the Titans on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sermon scuffled his way to a meager 1.6 yards per carry, and 11 of his yards actually came on one of his attempts. The journeyman back was outperformed by Tyler Goodson, who rode a game-long 33-yard run on the way to an average of 6.4 yards per carry on eight attempts. Neither back figures to have much fantasy relevance if Jonathan Taylor is able to return from his ankle injury in Week 7 against the Dolphins; however, if the latter misses at least one more game, Goodson may have earned himself a larger role at Sermon's expense.
Oct 11, 2024
Set for Week 6 lead role
Sermon is poised to lead the Colts' backfield Sunday against the Titans, as Jonathan Taylor (ankle) was ruled out Friday.
ANALYSIS
Taylor will miss a second consecutive game. In Taylor's absence against the Jaguars in Week 5, Sermon racked up 63 scrimmage yards and a touchdown on 10 carries and six catches. Sermon's 16 touches were double the total that Tyler Goodson saw in the Colts backfield, and they could be headed for a similar distribution against Tennessee.
Oct 10, 2024
Returns to full practice
Sermon (collarbone) was a full practice participant Thursday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon is on track to lead the Colts' backfield for a second straight week this Sunday against the Titans, as Jonathan Taylor (ankle) still hasn't returned to practice. Sermon played 58 percent of snaps in a 37-34 loss to Jacksonville this Sunday, turning 10 carries and six targets into 63 yards and a touchdown while Tyler Goodson had 57 yards on five carries and three targets.
Oct 10, 2024
Back at practice
Sermon (collarbone) was present for practice Thursday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Though top back Jonathan Taylor indicated that his ankle is feeling better at this stage, he wasn't spotted during the initial portion of Thursday's session. The Colts' upcoming injury report will clarify the official participation level of both Taylor and Sermon.
Oct 9, 2024
Misses Wednesday's practice
Sermon (collarbone) didn't practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to top RB Jonathan Taylor (ankle), who Sermon helped fill in for during Sunday's 37-34 loss to the Jaguars. The duo's status is thus worth tracking closely as this weekend's game against the Titans approaches, but for now Tyler Goodson is the top healthy back on the Colts' active roster, while Evan Hull and Trent Pennix are currently on the team's practice squad.
Oct 6, 2024
Logs 16 touches, TD in spot start
Sermon rushed 10 times for 38 yards and a touchdown and brought in all six targets for 25 yards in the Colts' 37-34 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sermon drew the start with Jonathan Taylor (ankle) sidelined, but he saw limited work on the ground partly due to game script. Additionally, the fourth-year back found running room at a premium on most of his carries, as 17 of his yards came on a single tote. Sermon did punch in a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to round out his fantasy day, and his strong work as a pass catcher led to him finishing second in receptions on the day for Indianapolis. If Taylor is unable to return to health ahead of a Week 6 road matchup against the Titans, Sermon figures to draw a second consecutive start in his teammate's stead.
Oct 4, 2024
Stage set to start Week 5
Sermon appears primed to start Sunday's divisional matchup against the Jaguars with Colts head coach Shane Steichen having announced Friday that Jonathan Taylor (ankle) is ruled out for Week 5, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon, who rushed five times for eight yards during Indianapolis' win over the Steelers in Week 4, looks positioned for a significant workload as the Colts' top backfield option heading into a road matchup against Jacksonville. Tyler Goodson will also be a candidate to mix in, but he's only handled one touch on offense in three appearances this season, a two-yard catch against Green Bay in Week 2. Sermon, meanwhile, boasts the stature and skillset of a three-down back, and Indianapolis deployed him to the tune of 17 carries for 88 yards in Week 15 of last season, with Taylor also sidelined.
Sep 29, 2024
Totals eight yards
Sermon rushed the ball five times for eight yards in Sunday's 27-24 win over the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Sermon didn't earn his first touch until late in the third quarter but closed out the game as the Colts' lead back after Jonathan Taylor (ankle) was forced to the sidelines. He was ineffective with his opportunity, but Sermon could be in for a significant workload in Week 5 against the Jaguars if Taylor is unable to suit up.
Sep 23, 2024
Scores TD in win
Sermon had two carries for 16 yards, including a one-yard touchdown, in Sunday's win over Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Sermon played on just five of the offense's 56 snaps but had a short-yardage touchdown when giving Jonathan Taylor some time off. Unlike Week 2, Taylor was used extensively in the fourth quarter. While it's possible Sermon could be used more frequently in passing situations as the primary backup running back, he's only going to get a small workload if the Colts are not playing from far behind if Taylor is healthy.
Sep 16, 2024
Gets time late in loss
Sermon had two carries for zero total yards and one reception for seven yards in Sunday's loss at Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
Sermon played on just 18 of the offense's 56 snaps but got most of his usage late in the fourth quarter when the Colts were playing from behind. Jonathan Taylor was surprisingly on the bench late in the game after some drops earlier in the game, so Sermon and Tyler Goodson could see more of a role in the passing game.
Sep 9, 2024
Minimal involvement in Week 1 loss
Sermon did not log a rushing attempt or draw a target during Sunday's 29-27 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Sermon handled the No. 2 role behind Jonathan Taylor versus Houston, playing five offensive snaps while Tyler Goodson didn't take the field. No running back aside from Taylor, who rushed 16 times for 48 yards and a touchdown, factored into the gameplan for Indianapolis' opener, but Sermon should mix in more frequently going forward. More opportunities could come Week 2 against a Packers defense that allowed 132 scrimmage yards and three TDs to Saquon Barkley in Week 1.
Sep 4, 2024
Not on injury report
Sermon (hamstring) is not listed on the Colts' injury report ahead of Sunday's season opener against the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Sermon has evidently moved past a hamstring issue that sidelined him last month, and as a result is in line to be available to back up starting RB Jonathan Taylor in Week 1. Also in the team's backfield mix is Tyler Goodson, though neither Sermon or Goodson figure to garner a high volume of weekly touches as long as Taylor is available.
Aug 28, 2024
Returns to practice
Sermon (hamstring) returned to practice Wednesday, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon injured his hamstring Aug. 11 during the Colts' preseason opener, after reports from the first two weeks of training camp suggested he was the favorite for the No. 2 RB role. He's now one of three backs on the roster after Tuesday's cutdowns, joined by starter Jonathan Taylor and 23-year-old Tyler Goodson. As things currently stand, Sermon presumably would get most of the carries in the event of a Taylor injury, with Goodson then handling passing situations and more of the targets.
Aug 25, 2024
Could return to practice soon
Colts coach Shane Steichen said Sunday that he's hopeful for Sermon (hamstring) to return to practice next week, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermond has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury during the preseason opener Aug. 11, and he missed Thursday's 27-14 win in the preseason finale against Cincinnati. Steichen's phrasing seems to indicate that the 25-year-old might return in the week immediate leading up to Indianapolis' season opener against the Texans on Sunday, Sept. 8. Sermon stretched with his teammates ahead of Sunday's practice, though he still wasn't in uniform, according to Bremer. When healthy, Sermon is considered to leading candidate to slot in as the No. 2 running back behind Jonathan Taylor. The latter's lingering injury could leave a chance for either Evan Hull or Tyler Goodson to step in behind Taylor in Week 1.
Aug 23, 2024
Misses another week
Sermon (hamstring) didn't play in Thursday's 27-14 preseason win over the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
James Boyd of The Athletic expects Sermon to have a spot on the initial 53-man roster despite missing the final two preseason games and the past couple weeks of practice. The running back was injured during the first quarter of the Colts' preseason opener, after reports out of training camp pegged him as a favorite for the second spot on the depth chart. It's a role that doesn't figure to entail many touches when Jonathan Taylor is healthy, and there's some chance Sermon's absence will lead the Colts to turn to Evan Hull and/or Tyler Goodson instead. The team may even put Sermon on injured reserve if he won't be ready for Week 1, in which case he'd be ruled out for the first four games of the season.
Aug 19, 2024
Misses game with hamstring injury
Sermon (hamstring) did not play in Saturday's preseason win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Sermon left Indy's first preseason game Sunday with a hamstring injury. The severity of the injury isn't clear, but it's thought he'll be ready for the start of the regular season. Sermon had been the leader for the No. 2 RB role behind Jonathan Taylor prior to the injury, with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull competing for the No. 3 role.
Aug 16, 2024
Misses practice
Sermon (hamstring) did not practice Thursday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon left Indy's first preseason game Sunday with a hamstring injury. The severity of the injury isn't clear, but it's not a good sign that he hasn't returned to practice this week. He seems unlikely to play in the team's second preseason game Saturday. Sermon had been the leader for the No. 2 RB role behind Jonathan Taylor prior to the injury, with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull competing for the No. 3 role.
Aug 11, 2024
Exits preseason opener with injury
Sermon won't return to Sunday's exhibition contest against Denver due to a hamstring injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon headed to the medical tent in the first quarter and has since been ruled out from returning. The severity of his hamstring injury isn't yet clear, but it could impact his availability for the remainder of the preseason slate and potentially prevent him from being ready for the start of the regular season as well. Sermon had been the leader for the No. 2 RB role behind Jonathan Taylor prior to the injury, with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull lining up in the pecking order below him.
Aug 4, 2024
Leader for backup RB role
Sermon appears to be the clear frontrunner for the backup role to Jonathan Taylor, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports. "He's doing some really good things here," head coach Shane Steichen said. "Really good in pass pro, I've been impressed with that, with the third-down stuff, and also, running and seeing the hole has been good."
ANALYSIS
The Colts showed their confidence in Sermon by not drafting a running back or signing a prominent undrafted free agent to compete for the backup role. He's competing with Evan Hull and Tyler Goodson for playing time behind Taylor. Hull and Goodson may be competing for a limited third-down receiving role and it's not clear both will make the final roster.
Apr 28, 2024
Poised for backup role
With the Colts not taking a running back in the 2024 draft, Sermon and Evan Hull are the primary backups to starter Jonathan Taylor, the Indianapolis Colts reports.
ANALYSIS
It was a mild surprise that the Colts didn't draft a running back or sign a prominent undrafted free agent to compete for the starting role. It's possible the Colts will sign a veteran free agent this spring for depth, but Sermon at this point could have a prominent backup role. Sermon rushed 35 times (including 17 carries in Week 15) for 160 yards to go along with three catches for 13 yards with Indy last season.
Mar 14, 2024
Re-signs with Indy
The Colts re-signed Sermon on Thursday, JJ Stankevitz of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
In 14 games for the Colts during the 2023 regular season, Sermon rushed 35 times (including 17 carries in Week 15) for 160 yards to go along with three catches for 13 yards. With Zack Moss now with the Bengals, Sermon will have a chance to carve out a complementary role behind starter Jonathan Taylor in 2024, but chances are Indianapolis will add further backfield depth via free agency or the draft.
Mar 13, 2024
Not tendered by Colts
Sermon wasn't tendered by the Colts, making him an unrestricted free agent, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon rushed 35 times for 160 yards as a member of the Colts in 2023, but the team didn't retain his rights as a restricted free agent, even after watching fellow running back Zack Moss sign with the Bengals in free agency. Sermon will look to sign with another team and compete for a roster spot in camp.
Jan 8, 2024
Gets back on radar
Sermon recorded 35 carries for 160 yards over 14 games in 2023, adding three catches for 13 yards on six targets.
ANALYSIS
Sermon had something of a bounce-back season in his third year after suiting up for just two games in his sophomore season in 2022. He was only able to fill a rotational role behind the very-capable backs Jonathan Taylor and Zack Moss, but he was decently efficient, averaging 4.6 yards per tote. Sermon enters the offseason as a free agent, but he's put himself in a fine position to get signed somewhere in 2024.
Jan 6, 2024
Won't play versus Houston
Sermon (coach's decision) is inactive for Saturday's game against the Texans, Raven Moore of the Colts' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The move comes with Zack Moss (forearm) returning from a two-game absence for the regular-season finale. Sermon saw the field in spells with both Moss and Jonathan Taylor missing time this season. He'll finish the regular season with 160 rushing yards on 35 carries while adding three catches for 13 yards over 14 games.
Jan 1, 2024
Has 32 yards rushing in win
Sermon had five carries for 32 yards and two receptions for nine yards on two targets in Sunday's win over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Sermon played 18 snaps on offense as he got playing time late in the game when Jonathan Taylor was briefly banged up. Sermon looks set to be the primary ball carrier behind Taylor with Zack Moss out, while Tyler Goodson working in a pass catching role among the backup running backs.
Dec 26, 2023
Just two carries in loss
Sermon had two carries for three yards in Sunday's loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Both Goodson and Trey Sermon played 14 snaps on offense in a reserve role behind Jonathan Taylor. Goodson, who had one carry and two receptions, had more opportunities than Sermon, but both were used sparingly behind Taylor. Taylor looks to be the top runner behind Taylor with Goodson the top receiver, but both could move back to the bench if Zack Moss is able to return from a forearm injury next week against the Raiders.
Dec 16, 2023
Thrust into large role in Week 15
Sermon racked up 88 yards on 17 carries during Saturday's 30-13 win versus the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Prior to Week 15, Sermon had just 11 rushes through his first 11 appearances of the campaign, but after Zach Moss (arm) exited early in the second quarter, the former earned the second-highest carry count in a game in his three-year career. Even subtracting his game-high 19-yard scamper, Sermon still averaged 4.3 yards on his 16 other rushes. Also out of the Colts backfield Saturday, the elevated Tyler Goodson totaled 13 touches for 79 yards from scrimmage. The top of Indianapolis' RB depth chart includes question marks for both Jonathan Taylor (thumb) and Moss, but there seems to be a chance for the former to return next weekend. If neither are available, though, Sermon and Goodson likely would be the team's primary runners Sunday, Dec. 24 in Atlanta.
Dec 11, 2023
Gets three carries in loss
Sermon had three carries for 13 yards in Sunday's loss at Cinncinati.
ANALYSIS
Sermon played just three snaps on offense while Tyler Goodson played on six snaps. It's not clear Sermon would be the lead back if both Zack Moss and Jonathan Taylor were out.
Dec 4, 2023
Plays just one snap on offense
Sermon played just one snap on offense in Sunday's overtime win at Tennessee. He had a drop on his only target.
ANALYSIS
Sermon entered to the game as the backup to Zack Moss with Jonathan Taylor out with a thumb injury, but didn't see the field on offense after his drop. Tyler Goodson played three snaps on offense and had two receptions and could overtake Sermon as the backup running back as a result.
Nov 29, 2023
Sliding up to No. 2 on depth chart
Sermon is expected to work as the top backup to Zack Moss for the duration of No. 1 running back Jonathan Taylor's absence while Taylor recovers from thumb surgery, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor sustained the thumb injury in this past Sunday's win over the Buccaneers and appears likely to miss multiple games, potentially even requiring a stint on injured reserve. Sermon previously backed up Moss when Taylor opened the season on PUP list while recovering from ankle surgery, but Sermon hasn't had more than six touches in a game this season. Per Stephen Holder of ESPN.com, head coach Shane Steichen said the Colts don't plan to sign a running back to compete with Sermon, though Steichen also suggested that Moss will see the overwhelming majority of backfield touches, as was the case during Taylor's prior absence.
Oct 9, 2023
Plays just thee snaps
Sermon did not have a carry or target in Sunday's win over Tennessee. He payed three snaps on offense.
ANALYSIS
It was bit of a surprise that Sermon was on the field on offense with the return of Jonathan Taylor from an ankle injury. He should have a minimal role as long as Taylor and Zack Moss are healthy.
Oct 2, 2023
Gets three carries in loss
Sermon had three carries for seven yards in Sunday's overtime loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Sermon played on 10 of the offense's 64 snaps as the backup to Zack Moss, who played 53 snaps on offense. Sermon may not play any snaps on offense this week if Jonathan Taylor is activated from the PUP list.
Sep 25, 2023
Five carries in backup role
Sermon had five carries for 17 yards and one reception on two targets in Sunday's win at Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was the surprise backup to starter Zack Moss as Deon Jackson was released Saturday and Jake Funk was limited to just five snaps on special teams. Sermon played 18 snaps on offense. It looks like Sermon will serve as the backup again Week 4 against the Rams, but then would move back to a smaller role if Jonathan Taylor comes of the PUP list for Week 5.
Sep 23, 2023
Moves to active roster
Sermon has been activated from the Indianapolis practice squad ahead of Sunday's game at Baltimore, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Colts released Deon Jackson in a corresponding move. Sermon will likely serve as the No. 3 running back on the depth chart behind starter Zack Moss and backup Jake Funk. Sermon may not play any snaps on offense and be used as insurance. Sermon may also not be on the active roster long if Jonathan Taylor returns from the PUP list in Week 5.
Sep 19, 2023
Finds new opportunity
Sermon (knee) signed to the Colts' practice squad Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was waived from IR by the Eagles after suffering a knee injury during training camp, but this move would signal the Ohio State product is now fully recovered. The 2021 third-round selection has yet to make an impact in the NFL, taking the field just twice last season, but he'll now work to make the most of his new opportunity in Indianapolis.
Sep 15, 2023
Waived from injured reserve
The Eagles waived Sermon (knee) with an injury settlement Friday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon landed on the Eagles' IR list at final cuts ahead of Week 1, but he'll now get a chance to find work elsewhere now that he's healthy. The 2021 third-round pick of the 49ers has 43 career carries for 186 yards (4.3 YPC) and one touchdown across 11 games.
Aug 31, 2023
Reverts to IR
Sermon (undisclosed) reverted the Eagles' injured reserve Wednesday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Sermon is reportedly dealing with an injury sustained in Philadelphia's preseason finale, when he translated 16 carries into 30 yards and one touchdown. The 24-year-old running back will now have to negotiate an injury settlement with the Eagles, if he wants a chance to search for an opportunity with a new team this season. He suited up for just two contests last year.
Aug 29, 2023
Waived by Eagles
The Eagles waived/injured Sermon (undisclosed) on Tuesday, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon reportedly got injured during Philadelphia's final preseason game, in which he posted a 16-30-1 rushing line while fellow RBs D'Andre Swift, Rashaad Penny, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott all were rested. Sermon can negotiate an injury settlement with the Eagles and then search for a new team if he passes through waivers unclaimed Wednesday morning.
Aug 27, 2023
Dealing with injury
Sermon (undisclosed) is not practicing Sunday, Zach Berman of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon took on a heavy workload in Thursday's preseason contest, and it's not clear if he picked up the injury during the game or since then. Either way, the third-year running back will work to get healthy so he can return to the practice field, as he likely has more to prove if he's going to make the team's 53-man roster.
Aug 25, 2023
Busy night with third-stringers
Sermon took 16 carries for 30 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 27-13 preseason loss to Indianapolis, with Zach Berman of The Athletic noting that Sermon is fifth on the depth chart.
ANALYSIS
Sermon also had four catches for 26 yards on six targets in what may have been an audition for other teams. The Eagles didn't play any starters in this one and also held out key backups, with the absentee list including four RBs (D'Andre Swift, Rashaad Penny, Kenneth Gainwell, Boston Scott). Sermon didn't exactly knock it out of the park, but much of that isn't his fault given that the Colts played a lot of starters and the Eagles used none. If nothing else, Sermon is one of the running backs most likely to get claimed next week after teams make roster cuts.
Jan 11, 2023
Barely plays all season
Sermon finished the season with just two carries for 19 yards, appearing in just two games.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was claimed off waivers by the Eagles shortly before the start of the season, but his new team evidently didn't view the second-year back as anything more than organizational depth. At no point was there even a hint that he'd move higher than fourth on the depth chart, and the Eagles never dressed more than three backs in a game. With Miles Sanders and Kenneth Gainwell suiting up for every game and Boston Scott missing just a pair, that left very little for Sermon to do.
Jan 1, 2023
Unavailable again
Sermon (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Sermon will now extend his absence streak to 11 consecutive games after being named a healthy scratch for the New Year's Day matchup versus New Orleans. The second-year running back likely won't see much action on the field unless either Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell or Boston Scott misses any amount of time.
Dec 18, 2022
Deemed inactive Sunday
Sermon (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Sermon is now slated to miss his ninth consecutive contest after being named a healthy scratch for Sunday's matchup versus Chicago. Unless either Miles Sanders, Boston Scott or Kenneth Gainwell are forced to miss time, the second-year back likely won't see much action on the field.
Dec 14, 2022
Clear of injury report
Sermon isn't listed on the Eagles' initial injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was inactive for Week 14 due to an illness, but he's since cleared the aliment and appears likely to suit up Sunday against Minnesota. However, the second-year running back hasn't played in a game since Week 5, so it's unlikely he sees the field in Week 15.
Dec 11, 2022
Won't suit up Sunday
Sermon (illness) is inactive for Sunday's matchup against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Sermon dealt with an illness during Week 14 prep and will ultimately be sidelined. However, the second-year running back hasn't played in a game since Week 5, so his absence shouldn't impact Philadelphia's game plan.
Dec 10, 2022
Questionable with illness
Sermon (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Sermon has not played since Week 5, and his availability for Week 14 is now in jeopardy due to an unspecified illness. With Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott all healthy, Philadelphia's game plan shouldn't be changed much either way.
Nov 3, 2022
Healthy scratch again
Sermon (coach's decision) was ruled inactive ahead of Thursday's game against the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Sermon will be ruled a healthy scratch for the sixth time since joining the Eagles in early September. The second-year back was waived as part of the 49ers' final roster cuts in August, and he's logged two carries for 19 yards on eight offensive snaps so far in 2022. Sermon is unlikely to see much action while slotting in behind Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott this season.
Oct 30, 2022
Isn't suiting up Sunday
Sermon (coach's decision) is listed as inactive for Sunday's game against the Steelers, Tim McManus of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon won't play for a second-straight contest due to a coach's decision, after he saw eight-combined snaps between Week 4 and Week 5. Barring any injuries to the team's RB room, the second-year back isn't expected to see much time on the field for the Eagles.
Oct 16, 2022
Labeled inactive for SNF
Sermon (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game versus the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Sermon won't suit up Sunday night against Dallas due to a coach's decision, after he rushed for a total of 19 yards on two carries across Philadelphia's last two contests. Following the team's bye in Week 7, the second-year running back will have a chance to play in Week 8 against Pittsburgh.
Oct 3, 2022
Two carries in season debut
Sermon rushed for 19 yards on two carries in his Eagles debut Sunday against the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was inactive in each of the first three games of the season, but he got the chance to suit up in Week 4 when Boston Scott's rib injury opened up the third running back spot. Sermon wasn't asked to play a significant role, seeing the field for just five offensive snaps. It will likely take at least one more injury ahead of him for him to have much fantasy relevance.
Oct 2, 2022
Set for Eagles debut
Sermon is active for Sunday's game against the Jaguars, Sage Hurley of the Eagles' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was claimed off waivers after failing to make the 49ers' Week 1 roster. He was inactive for Philadelphia's first two games, but with Boston Scott (ribs) sidelined, Sermon will have the chance to suit up. The Eagles regularly use a rotation at running back, so it's possible Sermon sees some work behind Miles Sanders and Kenneth Gainwell.
Sep 30, 2022
Expected to make team debut Sunday
With Boston Scott (ribs) unlikely to play, Sermon is expected to make his Eagles debut Sunday against the Jaguars, Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon joined the Eagles following the initial 53-man roster deadline, but the second-year running back has been a healthy scratch for each of the first three games with his new squad. As a rookie with San Francisco last year, the 2021 third-round pick rushed 41 times for 167 yards and one score across nine appearances. It's unclear what his role with be during his debut, but Sermon will have a tough time garnering many touches behind Miles Sanders and Kenneth Gainwell.
Sep 19, 2022
Sitting again Week 2
Sermon (coach's decision) is inactive for Monday's game against the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Since joining the Eagles after roster cut downs on Sept. 1, Sermon has been a healthy scratch for both of the team's contests. This may be his reality without an injury to a member of the backfield, which again will be paced by Miles Sanders, with Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott in reserve.
Sep 11, 2022
Inactive in Week 1
Sermon (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game at Detroit.
ANALYSIS
A third-round pick of the 49ers in 2021, Sermon was usurped by fellow rookie Elijah Mitchell when Raheem Mostert went down Week 1 last season. In the end, Sermon notched 44 touches in nine appearances as a rookie. While he survived cut-down day on Aug. 30, San Francisco waived him one day later, allowing the Eagles to scoop him up. Philadelphia does employ a run-heavy offense, but Sermon won't be available Week 1 while Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott man the team's backfield.
Sep 1, 2022
Claimed by Eagles
The Eagles have claimed Sermon off waivers from the 49ers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers let the 2021 third-rounder go on Wednesday, but Sermon -- who Schefter suggests previously drew trade interest from Philadelphia -- is now set to provide his new team with backfield depth behind Miles Sanders (hamstring), Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott.
Aug 31, 2022
Let go by 49ers
The 49ers have waived Sermon, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
With Sermon -- a 2021 third-rounder -- having been let go a day after Tuesday's wave of roster cut-downs, Jeff Wilson, Tyrion Davis-Price and Jordan Mason are left to compete for depth slotting behind Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) in the 49ers' backfield.
Aug 27, 2022
Fails to impress this preseason
Sermon finished with the 2022 preseason with 19 carries for just 39 yards across three exhibition contests.
ANALYSIS
Sermon didn't do much to dissuade those who labeled him an instant bust after a lackluster rookie campaign. The 49ers already burned another mid-draft pick this year on Tyrion Davis-Price, who was far more explosive with similar reps this preseason. It is looking like veteran Jeff Wilson Jr. is the frontrunner to be the primary backup to Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) come Week 1. Not only is Sermon likely out of the running for that job battle, but he may find himself off the active roster following a horrid preseason.
Aug 20, 2022
Back in action
Sermon carried the ball five times and gained eight yards in Saturday's 17-7 preseason win over the Vikings. He also caught one of his two targets for four yards.
ANALYSIS
The positive news is that Sermon was able to suit up after hobbling off the practice field Thursday. He was also the first back on the field with both Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) and Jeff Wilson (rest) sidelined. However, Sermon showed little burst, as his longest rush went for only three yards. His potential role remains unclear, though he could be involved in the offense if Mitchell isn't ready for a Week 1 matchup against the Bears.
Aug 20, 2022
Expected to play Saturday
Sermon will test out his injured ankle ahead of Saturday's preseason contest against the Vikings, but the expectation is the second-year running back should play, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Provided Sermon is good to go, the 2021 third-round pick could see a plethora of first-team reps with Elijah Mitchell sidelined due a hamstring injury. Sermon is in a complicated battle for the No. 2 RB role with rookie third-rounder Tyrion Davis-Price and long-standing veteran Jeff Wilson, although both of the latter options could be relegated to situational roles if the Ohio State product is able to build on what has been a positive training camp thus far.
Aug 19, 2022
Injured in practice Thursday
Sermon hobbled off the practice field Thursday due to an undisclosed injury, and the team has yet to provide an update on his status, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
If Sermon's forced to miss practice time, it would be an ill-timed absence, as fellow second-year running back Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) is already sidelined, leaving Jeff Wilson and rookie Tyrion Davis-Price to soak up most of the snaps in practice. An update on Sermon's status will likely be provided prior to Saturday's preseason game in Minnesota.
Aug 10, 2022
May be featured Friday night
Sermon was busy at Wednesday's practice and could see a lot of work Friday night against the Packers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon took the spotlight Wednesday with Elijah Mitchell not practicing for yet-to-be-disclosed reasons. Candidates for backup work behind Mitchell include Sermon, Jeff Wilson and Tyrion Davis-Price, with the competition seemingly open as the Niners prepare for the start of the preseason.
Jul 27, 2022
Shows up in good shape
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Sermon "is as yolked up as he can be" for the start of training camp, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan believes the 2021 third-round pick learned some lessons from a disappointing rookie season. Sermon mostly remained buried on the depth chart while fellow rookie Elijah Mitchell emerged as the starter, but there's an opportunity to earn backup work this summer with the competition mainly consisting of veteran Jeff Wilson and rookie third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price. It sounds like Sermon is off to a good start, at least when it comes to strength and conditioning. The practice field will be his real challenge, along with preseason games in the coming weeks.
Jul 18, 2022
Lot to prove in camp
Sermon heads into training camp healthy and projected to sit third on the 49ers' running back depth chart, Kyle Madson of USA Today Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon's rookie season was one to forget, as the 2021 third-round pick failed to impress at any stage of his first go-around on the grand stage. Elijah Mitchell -- who was drafted three rounds after Sermon -- seized the opportunity to become head coach Kyle Shanahan's primary rushing option last year. While draft status doesn't always equate to instant success, the running back position is generally one that hasn't required lots of development time for rookies in the modern NFL, so Sermon will have a lot to prove in camp. From a fantasy perspective, the second-year back will not be a name going off the boards in standard formats, as he projects to start on special teams, assuming he can maintain that current projected status.
Jan 16, 2022
Inactive Sunday
Sermon is inactive for Sunday's playoff game against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Though Sermon was recently activated from injured reserve, he's the odd man out Sunday, with Elijah Mitchell, JaMycal Hasty and Jeff Wilson available to handle the 49ers' backfield duties in the team's playoff opener.
Jan 11, 2022
Comes off IR
The 49ers activated Sermon (ankle) from injured reserve Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers needed to make this move by Tuesday, or else Sermon's 21-day practice window would have closed, and he would have remained on IR for the rest of the team's playoff run. Assuming all of Elijah Mitchell (knee), JaMycal Hasty and Jeff Wilson are available for Sunday's wild-card game at Dallas, there's a good chance Sermon is a healthy scratch. And that's also assuming Sermon heads into the weekend without an injury designation.
Jan 9, 2022
Not activated from Week 18
Sermon (ankle) wasn't among the players added to San Francisco's roster Saturday ahead of Sunday's regular-season finale against the Rams, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
San Francisco designated Sermon for return from injured reserve Dec. 22, a transaction that gives the team 21 days to evaluate him for a return to the 53-man roster. The team will thus have until Wednesday of the upcoming week to either activate Sermon or keep him on IR for the entirety of a potential postseason run, pending the results of the Week 18 games. The rookie running back will finish the regular season with 41 carries for 167 yards and a touchdown to go with three catches for 26 yards over nine appearances.
Dec 29, 2021
Slated to come off IR
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that the 49ers expect to activate Sermon (ankle) from injured reserve before Sunday's game against the Texans, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Absent for the past four contests due to a sprained right ankle, Sermon set himself for a return by getting back on the practice field last Wednesday. Assuming Shanahan's statement comes to pass, Sermon may find it difficult to be a part of the offense if Elijah Mitchell (knee) also puts an end to a three-game absence. If Mitchell is available, he could take on his usual workhorse role, while his stand-in, Jeff Wilson, would be next up for early-down reps. JaMycal Hasty also is on hand for change-of-pace work, which could limit Sermon's chances to get on the field.
Dec 23, 2021
Not activated for Thursday
The 49ers didn't activated Sermon (ankle) from injured reserve before Thursday's game at Tennessee, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was designated to return from IR on Wednesday, so it's no surprise he was unable to prove he wasn't past his sprained right ankle. With Elijah Mitchell (knee) absent for a third consecutive game, Jeff Wilson will act as the 49ers' primary running back Thursday, while the likes of JaMycal Hasty, Brian Hill, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and fullback Kyle Juszczyk mix into the backfield as well.
Dec 22, 2021
Designated to return from IR
Sermon (ankle) has been designated to return from injured reserve, with the Niners opening his practice window Wednesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear if this means Sermon has a shot to play in Thursday's game at Tennessee. With Elijah Mitchell (knee) in danger of a third straight absence, Jeff Wilson is lined up for another start.
Dec 4, 2021
Moves to IR
Sermon (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Kyle Shanahan seemed to hint this designation was on the table Friday as the rookie evidently suffered a sprain serious enough to miss significant time. It's been a disappointing campaign for the Ohio State product and while Sermon would be eligible to return before the end of the season, it's hard to envision a scenario where the running back emerges as the main ballcarrier.
Dec 3, 2021
Sitting out Week 13
Sermon (ankle) has been ruled out in advance of Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
For the first time all season, Sermon will be sidelined for an injury-related reason -- he was a healthy inactive in Weeks 1 and 9 -- after he sprained his right ankle in the 49ers' Week 12 win over the Vikings. Head coach Kyle Shanahan suggested that the ankle issue could be serious enough for Sermon to go on injured reserve, but a decision on that front likely won't be finalized until Saturday, the deadline for teams playing Sunday to make Week 13 transactions. Even if Sermon avoids IR and is able to return next week or Week 15, he likely won't have a role on offense so long as Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson and JaMycal Hasty are all healthy.
Nov 29, 2021
Sprained ankle to result in absence
Sermon has been diagnosed with an ankle sprain, and coach Kyle Shanahan said that the rookie third-round pick could land on injured reserve, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon left Sunday's eventual win over the Vikings due to a right ankle injury and was unable to return. Prior to his departure, he managed to play four snaps on special teams but none on offense as Elijah Mitchell (finger) was back in the fold following a one-game absence. Behind Mitchell, expect Jeff Wilson to handle the bulk of the backfield work that lingers while Sermon is sidelined.
Nov 28, 2021
Sidelined for second half
Sermon (ankle) has been ruled out for the second half of Sunday's game against the Vikings, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon injured his ankle on special teams in the first half of Sunday's contest, and he will not see any action in the final two quarters. The 49ers figure to provide some sort of update on Sermon's status at the conclusion of the game.
Nov 28, 2021
Injures ankle Sunday
Sermon sustained an ankle injury during Sunday's game against the Vikings, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was unable to put weight on his right leg as he needed assistance to get off the field after a Brandon Aiyuk punt return. With Elijah Mitchell back in the fold after recovering from finger surgery, Sermon didn't receive a touch prior to his departure.
Nov 22, 2021
55 yards as primary backup
Sermon rushed 10 times for 32 yards and caught his lone target for 23 yards in Sunday's 30-10 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Elijah Mitchell (finger) and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) were both inactive Sunday, so Sermon -- who had received just one carry over the last five games -- jumped up to second on the depth chart behind fill-in starter Jeff Wilson (19 carries for 50 yards). Neither back made much of a case for deserving more playing time when Mitchell returns, with wide receiver Deebo Samuel (eight carries for 79 yards and a touchdown) looking like the best running back on the field. Sermon is being treated as a last resort by the 49ers' coaching staff in his rookie year, so fantasy managers should do the same heading into an important matchup between NFC Wild Card hopefuls.
Nov 19, 2021
Expected to fill top backup role
Sermon will likely serve as the 49ers' top backup running back behind Jeff Wilson in Sunday's game against the Jaguars with Elijah Mitchell (finger) listed as doubtful and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) ruled out for the contest, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell wasn't able to practice in any capacity this week after undergoing surgery Tuesday to address a fractured finger on his right hand, so his expected absence should clear the way for Wilson to start and serve as San Francisco's lead back. Though Sermon, a rookie third-round pick, was expected to challenge for that role this season, he hasn't been able to gain much traction in the running attack even after Raheem Mostert (knee) suffered a season-ending injury Week 1. Sermon hasn't played an offensive snap since Week 5, but the depleted state of the San Francisco backfield should be enough for him to step in as the No. 2 option this week, as the only other back on the roster (Trenton Cannon) has been treated almost exclusively as a special-teams player. Since Sermon hasn't shown much aptitude as a receiver either, Shahanan might not be inclined to rely on the rookie for the passing-down role that belonged to Hasty. Instead, the 49ers could lean on Wilson as a three-down workhorse, with Sermon subbing in
Nov 7, 2021
Healthy scratch Sunday
Sermon (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Sunday against the Cardinals, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Starting running back Elijah Mitchell was inhibited in practice this week by a rib injury, and while he's playing the 49ers reportedly are unsure how much work he'll be able to handle. Despite it all, Sermon won't be a candidate to spell Mitchell, as he's struggled to earn work on offense when the latter has been available to the offense. With Sermon a healthy scratch, Jeff Wilson, JaMycal Hasty and Trenton Cannon are the running backs that will mix in behind Mitchell on Sunday.
Oct 25, 2021
Limited to special teams
Sermon did not receive a touch or an offensive snap in Sunday's 30-18 loss to the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Sermon took a backseat to Elijah Mitchell when his fellow rookie returned from injury in Week 5, and now he's dropped in the depth chart yet again with the return of JaMycal Hasty (ankle). The 49ers' third-round pick from this year's draft performed well in Mitchell's absence, so his placement in head coach Kyle Shanahan's doghouse doesn't add up. Whatever the case may be, it is clear the team has no intentions on developing Sermon so long as Mitchell is healthy, leaving the back off the fantasy radar heading into next Sunday's tilt against the Bears.
Oct 3, 2021
Productive in starting role
Sermon ran for 89 yards on 19 carries against Seattle on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers were without Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) and JaMycal Hasty (ankle), so there wasn't much competition for Sermon in the 49ers backfield Sunday, but Jacques Patrick (two carries) was the only other 49ers running back to touch the ball against Seattle. Given that Sermon mostly did well with the heightened workload, it's possible that he's earned himself more traction in the 49ers backfield even if Mitchell returns in Week 5. In the meantime, Sermon should probably be considered the favorite to lead the 49ers running backs as they hit the road for Arizona in Week 5.
Oct 3, 2021
Should get another start
Sermon is expected to remain the 49ers' top option out the backfield for Sunday's game against the Seahawks with Elijah Mitchell (questionable, shoulder) not expected to play Week 4, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In the absence of Mitchell in the 49ers' Week 3 loss to the Packers, Sermon drew the start and played 60 percent of offensive snaps, but he wasn't especially effective during his time on the field (10 carries for 31 yards and a touchdown, two receptions for three yards on three targets). Sermon wasn't helped by the 49ers trailing for most of the night, which forced the team to adopt a more pass-heavy game script than head coach Kyle Shanahan might have preferred. Assuming the 49ers aren't forced to play from behind Week 4, Sermon could be in store for a higher-volume role, but Kyle Juszczyk, Jacques Patrick and Trenton Cannon linger as candidates for backfield work if the rookie third-round pick can't get much going on the ground or as a pass catcher.
Sep 27, 2021
Scores in first start
Sermon rushed 10 times for 31 yards and a touchdown while catching two passes for three yards in Sunday's 30-28 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Sermon got the nod as starter as expected after Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) was pronounced out for the contest. The 49ers' third-round selection from this year's draft finished with a decent fantasy line thanks to his touchdown scamper, but the 3.1 yards per carry failed to impress. In the rookie's defense, the 49ers were playing from behind for most of the contest, and relied upon their passing game to lead a comeback that fell just short. Perhaps Sermon could perform better in a more traditional game script. Whether or not we get a chance to see that is currently undetermined, as Mitchell could end up returning for next Week's matchup against the Seahawks. If the latter is unable to come back from injury, then Sermon should receive the lion's share of backfield touches like he did against the Packers.
Sep 26, 2021
Good chance to lead backfield
Sermon is one of four available running backs for the 49ers on Sunday against the Packers after Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) was deemed inactive, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Joining Sermon are Kerryon Johnson, Jacques Patrick and Trenton Cannon. Due to the draft capital invested in Sermon, a 2021 third-round pick, and his experience in coach Kyle Shanahan's system relative to the other three, he likely will lead San Francisco's backfield Week 3, despite his much publicized slide down the depth chart in recent weeks. Clearly, injuries to Mitchell, Raheem Mostert (knee) and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) have opened up an opportunity for Sermon, but an impressive performance Sunday could solidify his standing in Shanahan's mind moving forward.
Sep 24, 2021
Clears protocol, expected to start
Sermon is out of the concussion protocol and likely will serve as the 49ers' starting running back Sunday night against the Packers, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Friday injury report lists Elijah Mitchell (calf) as doubtful and JaMycal Hasty (knee) as out, while Sermon avoids a game designation altogether. The rookie thus appears ticketed for the lead backfield role in an offense with excellent coaching and blocking, considering the other healthy RBs on the roster are Trenton Cannon (primarily a special teams player) and Jacques Patrick (a 2020 UDFA who was signed Tuesday), while veterans Kerryon Johnson and Chris Thompson are the options from the practice squad. Of course, Sermon hasn't done much to inspire confidence, first slipping down the depth chart this summer and then suffering an injury on his first NFL carry. No matter, the third-round pick has a nice opportunity, with a big night potentially leading to continued involvement even if/when the Niners backfield gets a little healthier.

Sheds non-contact jersey
Sermon (concussion) shed his non-contact jersey for Friday's practice, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's just a walkthrough, but this supports GM John Lynch's statement Friday morning when he said Sermon was trending in the right direction for Sunday's game against the Packers. Lynch was less optimistic about Elijah Mitchell, who returned to practice Friday after missing Wednesday and Thursday with a shoulder injury. It's possible both backs end up listed as questionable this weekend.

Progressing, remains in protocol
GM John Lync said Sermon (concussion) is trending in the right direction after practicing in a limited fashion Wednesday and Thursday, though the running back remains in the concussion protocol, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon suffered the concussion during the Week 2 win over the Eagles, but his quick return to practice indicates that he's advancing through the necessary protocols. If cleared to play, the rookie third-round pick could be in line for an increased role Sunday against the Packers since Elijah Mitchell's status is in question due to a shoulder injury. Sermon was a healthy scratch in the season opener, but opportunities have quickly been presented with Raheem Mostert (knee) out for the season and JaMychal Hasty (ankle) facing a multi-week absence.

Puts in another limited practice
Sermon (concussion) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
For a second straight session, Sermon had a cap on his reps as he wore a blue non-contact jersey due to the concussion he sustained this past Sunday in Philadelphia, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic. Sermon will have to complete the NFL's protocol for head injuries to make himself available Week 3 against the Packers, but he appears to be the best bet of the 49ers' regular running backs to be active Sunday. With Raheem Mostert (knee) on IR, JaMycal Hasty out several weeks due to a high ankle sprain, and Elijah Mitchell working his way through a shoulder stinger, Sermon may be in line for his first career start this weekend. Sermon and the other three aside, San Francisco has emergency options lined up in Trenton Cannon and Jacques Patrick -- both are on the active roster -- while Kerryon Johnson and Chris Thompson are candidates to be elevated from the practice squad.

Officially limited Wednesday
Sermon (concussion) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon came out of Week 2 with a concussion, but coach Kyle Shanahan noted Wednesday that the rookie third-round pick was "trending in a good direction" as he practiced in a blue non-contact jersey, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. The 49ers already have one running back out for the season -- Raheem Mostert (knee) -- and another dealing with a high-ankle sprain (JaMycal Hasty). Meanwhile, fellow rookie sixth-rounder Elijah Mitchell is tending to a shoulder injury that Shanahan described as "worse than a stinger," according to David Lombardi of The Athletic. Sermon will need to pass all five phases of the protocol for head injuries to suit up Sunday night against the Packers, but with so many unknowns in San Francisco's backfield it's unclear how the RB work will break down. Trenton Cannon is the only other back on the 49ers' active roster, and Kerryon Johnson, Chris Thompson and Jacques Patrick are candidates to be elevated from the practice squad.

Likely to be limited Wednesday
Sermon (concussion) is in line to practice on a limited basis Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was dinged on the helmet during his first potential carry as a pro this past Sunday -- the play was nullified by an Eagles penalty -- suffering a concussion in the process. Coach Kyle Shanahan relayed to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com on Wednesday that Sermon is "trending in a good direction," but the rookie third-rounder will don a blue non-contact jersey to begin Week 3 prep. Meanwhile, Raheem Mostert is out for the season following knee surgery, Elijah Mitchell's Week 2 injury is considered worse than a stinger, and JaMycal Hasty is expected to miss multiple weeks with a high-ankle sprain. Beyond that quartet, Trenton Cannon is the only other RB on the 49ers' active roster, while Kerryon Johnson, Chris Thompson and Jacques Patrick are on the practice squad.

Has concussion
Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Sermon sustained a concussion during Sunday's 17-11 victory in Philadelphia, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After Elijah Mitchell suffered a shoulder injury in the second half Sunday, Sermon finally was called upon for his first NFL action. It didn't go well at all, with the rookie third-rounder taking an elbow to the helmet, fumbling in the process. The play ultimately was nullified by an Eagles penalty, but Sermon remained on the turf for a bit before going to the sideline and eventually the locker room. Now that he's in the concussion protocol, there's no telling when he'll be cleared for game action. As for the rest of the backfield, both Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty (ankle) have health concerns postgame, so the entire backfield bears monitoring as the 49ers prepare to host the Packers in Week 3.

May have head injury
Sermon was evaluated for a head injury during the fourth quarter of Sunday's win at Philadelphia, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was called upon when Elijah Mitchell suffered a shoulder injury, but on the first potential carry of his career the former took a shot to the helmet, fumbled the ball and remained on the turf for a spell. Sermon managed to get back to the sideline before he was escorted to the locker room. While it's unclear if Sermon sustained a concussion, the 49ers will come out of Week 2 with injuries littered across the backfield (JaMycal Hasty also hurt his ankle).

Suiting up Week 2
Sermon is active for Sunday's game in Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
After Sermon was a surprise healthy scratch Week 1, he'll be available to the 49ers backfield Sunday. That said, Elijah Mitchell is expected to be the lead runner in the wake of Raheem Mostert's season-ending knee injury. In the team's season opener at Detroit, Mitchell turned 19 carries into 104 yards and one touchdown, while JaMycal Hasty had two touches for 18 yards and a TD himself. As a result, Sermon may not be available for more than a handful of snaps in the first potential game action of his career.
Sep 13, 2021
Back in RB mix
Sermon is slated to be a part of the 49ers' running back rotation with Raheem Mostert (knee) expected to miss the next eight weeks, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kyle Shanahan made Sermon a healthy scratch in the team's season opener, leaving Mostert, JaMycal Hasty and rookie sixth-rounder Elijah Mitchell is the available running backs. After Mostert went down with a knee injury in the first half, Mitchell was the player to profit most, taking 19 carries for 104 yards and one touchdown. Hasty himself had just two touches for 18 yards and one TD, so Mitchell seems to be the preferred RB option in San Francisco for the time being. Having said that, the 49ers invested more draft capital in Sermon than Mitchell back in April, so the former will get a chance to climb the depth chart as soon as Sunday at Philadelphia.

Surprise inactive Week 1
Sermon (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Lions, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
After the 49ers invested a third-round selection into him during this year's draft, Sermon not only looked on track to be a regular member of the team's weekly backfield mix, but perhaps a threat to displace Raheem Mostert as the No. 1 option. Even after a strong preseason, however, Sermon will surprisingly find himself in street clothes for Week 1. Behind Mostert, the 49ers will have JaMycal Hasty and Elijah Mitchell active in reserve.
Aug 29, 2021
Productive in preseason finale
Sermon rushed seven times for 37 yards in Sunday's 34-10 preseason win over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Sermon saw teammate Raheem Mostert get all the tailback touches on San Francisco's first drive before getting involved himself on the second. The rookie once again looked good, as did most of the Niners' ball-carriers, finishing with 242 rushing yards as a team. Heading into his first regular season, Sermon should be a strong option alongside Mostert in arguably the league's best rushing scheme.
Aug 25, 2021
Back at practice
Sermon (ankle) has retaken the field at practice, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon sat out the team's preseason contest Sunday versus the Chargers while tending to the ankle issue but appears to be back in the fold after a few more days of working on it. Given his absence from the last preseason contest, there's a chance Sermon's part of the 49ers' backfield mix for the preseason finale Sunday against the Raiders to get him some a tune-up ahead of the regular season.
Aug 22, 2021
Tending to ankle issue
Sermon won't suit up Sunday at the Chargers due to an ankle injury, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2021 third-rounder made a surprise appearance on the 49ers' list of players "not expected to play," but an injury and not a coach's decision is forcing the team's hand. Sermon will be unavailable to the backfield along with Raheem Mostert and Elijah Mitchell (hip), meaning San Francisco will trot out Wayne Gallman, JaMycal Hasty, Kyle Juszczyk and Josh Hokit at running back.
Aug 22, 2021
No go Sunday
Sermon isn't in line to play in Sunday's preseason contest at the Chargers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon will join starting running back Raheem Mostert and fellow rookie Elijah Mitchell (hip) on the sideline. With the trio unavailable, San Francisco's backfield has been whittled down to Wayne Gallman, JaMycal Hasty, Kyle Juszczyk and Josh Hokit for preseason Week 2.
Aug 15, 2021
Registers 40 yards in opener
Sermon rushed nine times for 26 yards (2.9 YPC) and caught both of his targets for 14 yards in Saturday's 19-16 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Sermon couldn't get much going on the ground in his preseason debut, and he did fumble once, though 49ers left tackle Colton McKivitz jumped on it. The third-round pick out of Ohio State has been making a case in training camp to be the 1B behind Raheem Mostert, a 29-year-old speedster with a troubling injury history. Saturday's dud shouldn't be considered a setback to Sermon's plan, but he'll need to show more moving forward to truly separate from Wayne Gallman and JaMycal Hasty.
Jul 29, 2021
Mixing in with starters already
Sermon appears to be "1B to Raheem Mostert's 1A" in the San Francisco backfield, according to Tim Kawakami of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Mostert averaged 13 carries and two receptions in eight starts last season, so there's room for another runner to make an impact even if the speedy 29-year-old keeps his starting job and stays healthy. Sermon already got some work with the first-team offense during the offseason program and is now continuing that at training camp, while fellow 49ers back Jeff Wilson (knee) remains in danger of missing the first half of the upcoming season. Wayne Gallman is the lone veteran behind Mostert in the San Francisco backfield, with the other options being 2020 UDFA JaMycal Hasty and 2021 UDFA Elijah Mitchell.
Jun 25, 2021
Potential contributor as rookie
Sermon impressed in the offseason work as a pass-catcher out of the backfield and is in line to make an impact as a rookie if he can carry that over into training camp, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sermon still has Raheem Mostert (knee) and Wayne Gallman to contend with for reps out of the gate, but his competition thinned a bit after Jeff Wilson was forced to undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus in late May that will keep him out for 4-to-6 months. He should be in the mix for carries come Week 1 as a result, though training camp figures to be a determining factor.
May 25, 2021
Injury opens up opportunity
With Jeff Wilson (knee) being ruled out four-to-six months, Sermon could jump up the depth chart during training camp.
ANALYSIS
Mostert and Wilson were assumed to be the 1A/1B combo Shanahan would deploy in 2021, but the news of the latter's surgery opens the door for Sermon to grasp a larger role in this potent offense. The third-round pick has a large frame (6-foot, 215 pounds) and surprising agility for a larger back. If he can secure the backup role -- which usually leads to 10-15 touches in a Shanahan offense -- Sermon could burst onto the fantasy scene if his production in the SEC translates well into the NFL. Today's news certainly raises the back's stock heading into training camp and early fantasy drafts.
