Tosses two TDs in Week 10 win
Shough completed 19 of 27 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 17-7 win over the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Making his second career NFL start, the rookie quarterback hit Chris Olave for a 62-yard score in the second quarter and Juwan Johnson for a 30-yard TD in the fourth to secure his first win. It was a much more impressive showing from Shough than in his first start, as he nearly doubled the passing yards total (304) he amassed in his first three appearances with the Saints. The 2025 second-round pick will get a bye next week before facing the Falcons in Week 12.

Beaten down in first career start
Shough was 15-for-24 passing for 176 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Sunday's 34-10 defeat to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Shough turned in a fine performance in what was another dreadful outing for the Saints' offense. New Orleans played from behind in stops and starts for essentially the entire game, as the Rams dominated time of possession with nearly 43:53-16:07. Shough showed some promise when he piloted a 6-play, 71-yard touchdown drive at the end of the first half. But, he only had three offensive series in the second half, including a final possession that ended with a fourth-down interception. Shough and the Saints' offense will need to make some significant improvements before their first matchup versus the division-rival Panthers in Week 10 on Sunday.

Viewed as starter for rest of year
Saints coach Kellen Moore said Wednesday that he plans to start Shough for the remainder of the season, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
That's almost always the case when a team changes QBs, but it doesn't always work out that way. Shough does figure to be given plenty of slack, if only because he's a rookie on a team with poor alternatives. He got his first significant action in a 23-3 loss to Tampa Bay in Week 8, subbing in for Spencer Rattler in the third quarter and finishing out the game. Shough didn't look any better than Rattler, completing 17 of 30 passes for 128 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception (plus three carries for 12 yards).

Taking over as starting QB in NOLA
Saints head coach Kellen Moore informed Shough that he will replace Spencer Rattler as the team's starting quarterback beginning with Sunday's game against the Rams in Los Angeles, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
A change at quarterback seemed inevitable after Rattler was benched midway through this past Sunday's 23-3 loss to the Buccaneers, and the Saints have now officially opted to turn the offense over to Shough, a rookie second-round pick. After falling short in his bid for the starting job during training camp and the preseason, Shough had come on in relief of Rattler in two games through the first eight weeks of the season, completing 17 of 32 passes for 128 yards, no touchdowns and one interception while carrying three times for 12 yards. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 219 pounds, Shough brings ideal size and a strong throwing arm at the position, but he offers less rushing upside and wasn't especially accurate in passer-friendly offenses at Texas Tech and Louisville during his collegiate career. The Saints could look to lean heavily on the Alvin Kamara-led ground attack to help ease the 26-year-old Shough in during his first NFL start.

Takes over for struggling starter
Shough completed 17 of 30 pass attempts for 128 yards and an interception while gaining 12 yards on three carries in Sunday's 23-2 loss to Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Starter Spencer Rattler was mercifully benched late in the third quarter after committing a pair of turnovers a week after turning the ball over four times against the Bears. Shough didn't fare much better against the Buccaneers, producing an eerily similar stat to Rattler's in an abysmal performance by the Saints' offense as a whole. It is unclear if head coach Kellen Moore will hand the keys to the rookie going forward, but neither Shough nor Rattler should sniff starting lineups in standard formats against the Rams in Week 9.

First NFL action in garbage time
Shough failed to complete either of his pass attempts in Sunday's 44-13 loss to Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Shough got his first taste of the pros when he took over for Spencer Rattler on New Orleans' final drive in garbage time Sunday. The 2025 second-round pick failed to complete either of his pass attempts in the brief outing. This wasn't a changing of the guard, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Shough take over at some point this season if the Saints continue stacking losses under Rattler.

Loses QB competition to Rattler
Shough will begin the regular season as the backup to Spencer Rattler, who coach Kellen Moore named the Week 1 starter Tuesday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Shough spent the preseason in a prolonged competition with Rattler for the Week 1 starting gig, but at least to begin the regular season, he'll kick off his NFL career in a backup capacity. It may not be long before the rookie second-round pick gets a chance to take the field, though, if Rattler ends up struggling to move the offense consistently.

Solid showing in preseason finale
Shough completed 12 of 20 passes for 102 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed twice for 20 yards and another score during the Saints' 28-19 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday afternoon. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Shough came into the game on the Saints' fourth possession after Spencer Rattler handled the first three drives and led New Orleans to six points. Shough put together an encouraging preseason overall that saw him complete 66.7 percent of his passes while throwing for a touchdown in addition to Saturday's 11-yard scoring scamper early in the fourth quarter that capped off an impressive 12-play, 77-yard march. Consequently, the rookie second-round pick has seemingly done everything he can to make his case over Rattler for the starting quarterback job to open the campaign, and coming days will tell whether or not his efforts were successful.

To be second QB up Saturday
Shough serve as the No.2 quarterback behind Spencer Rattler during Saturday's preseason finale against the Broncos, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Shough was outplayed by Rattler during New Orleans' 17-17 preseason tie against Jacksonville on Sunday, in which he got the start but completed just nine of 12 pass attempts for 66 yards across four possessions. While head coach Kellen Moore confirms that the decision to start Rattler on Saturday doesn't indicate that a decision for Week 1 has been made, per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, Shough will certainly need to perform better versus Denver in order to make his case for opening the regular season under center. Across his two preseason showings combined, the rookie second-round pick has completed 24 of 34 pass attempts for 231 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Moore mum on Week 1 starter
Head coach Kellen Moore said Tuesday that he has not decided on who will be the Saints' starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 7, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
After serving as the backup behind Spencer Rattler in the preseason opener against the Chargers, Shough drew the start in Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Shough didn't do much to separate himself from Rattler in the quarterback competition, with the former going 9-for-12 on passes for 66 yards against Jacksonville. It's unclear who Moore will go with as the starter for the Saints' preseason finale against the Broncos on Saturday, but that game will be the last opportunity for Shough to win the QB1 job before the start of the regular season.

Modest numbers in preseason start
Shough completed nine of 12 passes for 66 yards in Sunday's 17-17 preseason tie against the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Shough got the start but led the Saints to only three points on four first-half drives. Spencer Rattler, who started the team's first preseason game against the Chargers, had 199 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception in the second half Sunday. The quarterback competition between the 2025 second-round pick Shough and the 2024 fifth-rounder Rattler likely won't be decided until after the Saints' preseason finale against the Broncos on Saturday.
Aug 16, 2025
Will start vs. Jaguars
Saints head coach Kellen Moore said Saturday that Shough will start Sunday's preseason game against Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
Shough worked as the backup to Spencer Rattler during New Orleans' preseason opener against the Chargers, completing 15 of 22 pass attempts for 165 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but the rookie second-round pick will get a chance to start versus the Jaguars, who will field starters on both offense and defense. A strong showing versus Jacksonville's first-team defense would be significant in bolstering Shough's chances of winning the Week 1 starting job, but it wouldn't be a surprise at all if Moore holds off on making such a decision until after the team's preseason finale against Denver on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Mixed results as backup Sunday
Shough completed 15 of 22 pass attempts for 165 yards, one touchdown and one interception with one rushing attempt for three yards in Sunday's 27-13 preseason loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Shough entered Sunday's exhibition behind Spencer Rattler (7-11, 53 yards) but wound up producing the preferred stat line while operating the second-string offense. Both inexperienced arms committed a turnover apiece while playing roughly a combined three quarters of action. This is truly shaping up to be a tight competition for the starting gig in New Orleans come Week 1. It wouldn't be surprising to see Shough get the nod under center against the Jaguars next Sunday in order to give both players a fair shake at being evaluated this preseason.

Will be backup in preseason opener
Shough will serve as the Saints' backup quarterback for Sunday's preseason opener against the Chargers, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Shough has gotten some reps with the first-team offense during training camp, but Spencer Rattler will be New Orleans' QB1 for the first exhibition game while Jake Haener operates as the third-string passer. Shough and Rattler are battling to be the Week 1 starter, and the former should have an opportunity to be the starter in at least one of the Saints' three preseason games.

Looks sharp with first-team offense
Shough took most of the first-team reps Thursday and looked sharp during practice, according to SI.com's Gilberto Manzano.
ANALYSIS
Reports from Saints training camp suggest Spencer Rattler has gotten more work with the starters this summer, including during a scrimmage this past Sunday. Thursday's practice marks a step in the right direction for Shough, who still has time to make his case for the Week 1 starting job. Saints coach Kellen Moore hasn't announced how he'll divide QB reps during Sunday's preseason opener against Cincinnati.
Aug 5, 2025
Losing ground?
Shough played well during Sunday's scrimmage, but Spencer Rattler took far more first-team reps, Ross Jackson of LouisianaSports.net reports.
ANALYSIS
Both QBs have gotten mixed reviews from beat writers in terms of performance, but the reps seem to be shaking out in Rattler's favor lately, as he led five of seven drives with the first-team offense Sunday and was then the first-team QB at the start of the next practice (Tuesday). While Jake Haener has also mixed in with the starters some, coach Kellen Moore's decision ultimately figures to be between Rattler and Shough. Moore recently said he's "close" to deciding on his Week 1 starter.
Jul 23, 2025
Scheduled for first-team reps
Shough will take first-team reps Thursday, after Spencer Rattler worked with the starters Wednesday for the first practice of minicamp, Jeff Nowak of WWLAM reports.
ANALYSIS
Rattler made six starts last season as a rookie fifth-round pick, although that might not help his case much under a new coaching staff, considering he completed just 57 percent of his passes and lost all six games. Shough now comes in as a rookie second-round pick -- albeit one who will turn 26 in September -- to compete for the starting job that opened up when Derek Carr announced his retirement in May. Shough recently signed a fully guaranteed rookie contract, paving the way for normal participation in training camp after he was unsigned for the offseason program.

Gets fully-guaranteed rookie deal
Shough agreed to terms on his four-year rookie contract with the Saints on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Shough gets his entire $10.8 million rookie contract guaranteed, as well as an annual Roster Bonus payment structure, which no other rookie selected outside the first round has. The No. 40 overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, Shough enters training camp primed for a three-way competition between himself, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener (oblique) for the Week 1 starting job, an opportunity opened up by the offseason retirement of Derek Carr (shoulder). While Shough boasts the least NFL experience of the trio, he will turn 26 in September, so if he manages to impress in training camp there will be little incentive to keep him sidelined for any sort of developmental period.

Opportunity for QB1 role as rookie
Shough is lined up to be the Saints' starting quarterback next season after Derek Carr (shoulder) announced his retirement Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Coming into the weekend, there were already questions about Carr's potential availability for the 2025 campaign due to the veteran quarterback's shoulder issue, and his decision to retire has left the Saints with a QB room featuring Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. Rattler struggled as a rookie last year, completing just 57 percent of his passes while posting a 4:5 TD:INT, but he did rush for 146 yards on just 18 carries and could get a chance to begin the season as the starter behind center given that he is the most experienced of the group. However, Shough should at least have the opportunity to battle for the Week 1 starting role and may be the favorite for the job after the Saints took him the second round of April's NFL Draft. Though he's an NFL rookie, Shough is 26 years old, so New Orleans has little incentive to stash him on the bench for development purposes, but there's always a possibility the organization brings in a more experienced quarterback via free agency or trade.

New franchise QB in New Orleans?
The Saints selected Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 40th overall.
ANALYSIS
New Orleans has been linked to this quarterback class of late, especially with Derek Carr dealing with a shoulder issue. The Saints were able to play this out very well and land the No.3 quarterback off the board without having to sacrifice draft capital. Shough had a circuitous route to get to this moment. Once painted as the heir apparent to Justin Herbert at Oregon, Shough battled several injuries in Eugene and transferred to Texas Tech, where unfortunate injury luck followed. He made 13 starts over three seasons in Lubbock before transferring to his final stop, Louisville. Shough managed to stay healthy and showed what he can do, throwing for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns in 12 starts. Obviously, Shough is an older quarterback prospect who will turn 26 as a rookie. Injuries prevented him from showing his talent until his seventh year in college. He has a prototypical frame (6-foot-5, 219 pounds) with good arm strength and processing ability. His age suggests he doesn't have a ton of runway to develop on t
