College Football Picks for Week 5: Sept 22-28

Mark Gronowski #11 of the Iowa Hawkeyes celebrates his touchdown against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights

After a 3-0 week in Week 3, we went 2-1 in Week 4! We’re seeing the board well this year!

For Week 5, Ole Miss has to face No. 4-ranked LSU at home in what should be an epic SEC matchup this weekend.

But that’s not even the best SEC game on the slate. Alabama is headed on the road to take on Georgia. Typically, we see this game played in the SEC Championship or at the end of the season. This year, it’s going to be played before we even get to October!

Below, I’ll look at some of the biggest games of the slate and give out my best NCAAF bets for those games. Let’s keep the wins coming!

Let’s Keep Picking Winners

Over the last six bets, we’re 5-1 with bets against the spread. Let’s keep that going this weekend. Ultimately, it certainly helps when there’s more data and games played.

USC Trojans vs. Illinois Fighting Illini (+6.5)

The Illinois Fighting Illini received a wake-up call last weekend. Illinois dropped a road game to Indiana, 63-10. They gained nine first downs and totaled just 161 yards of offense. Illinois could not make plays on third down, and Luke Altmeyer was outplayed by Fernando Mendoza.

Illinois was likely overrated to begin the season. The Fighting Illini won a game against Duke on the road, 45-19, which led everyone to believe that Illinois was special this season. But that just wasn’t the case.

Meanwhile, the USC Trojans earned back-to-back wins over Purdue and Michigan State. They defeated the bottom teams in the Big 10 rather easily, but still allowed at least 17 points in both games. The USC pass rush isn’t elite, and should give some time for Altmeyer to make better decisions and earn plays down the field.

On the other hand, Illinois’ secondary has struggled this season. Jayden Maiava has earned 1,223 yards passing with nine touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s got a 95.5 QBR, which is the best in the nation.

I’ll back the Over 59.5.

Expert Pick: Over 59.5 (-110) at Caesars

Indiana Hoosiers vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (+7.5)

The Iowa Hawkeyes squeezed past the Rutgers Scarlet Knights with a 38-28 win on the road. Iowa didn’t play its best defense, but the offense made some really good players behind Mark Gronowski.

Of course, everyone is going to jump on the Indiana bandwagon after a 53-point win over Illinois. In addition, many people will likely laugh at the fact that Iowa gave up 28 points to Rutgers and almost didn’t even win. But that’s why it’s a perfect buy-low spot for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes have talent on offense and typically have one of the most consistent defenses in the nation every year. Let’s back Iowa now that you can get +7.5 with the Hawkeyes. Iowa at +7.5 at home is crazy!

Expert Pick: Iowa +7.5 (+100) at Caesars

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Georgia Bulldogs (-3)

The Alabama Crimson Tide lost Week 1 to Florida State. You’d think the world was ending. All the media, alumni, and fans wanted Kalen DeBoer gone.

He’s not Nick Saban, but he pushed Washington into the College Football Championship before he got to Alabama. He can coach.

Since that loss to Florida State, Alabama is 2-0 and has scored 114 points in its last two games. They’ve responded well to that loss to Florida State. However, the Crimson Tide were home those past two weeks. Now, they’re back on the road against Georgia.

On the other hand, Georgia escaped Tennessee, 44-41, last weekend. Tennessee had the chance to earn a game-winning field goal and shanked it. Clearly, Georgia is beatable. I’d like to think Alabama will respond well in this game. The Crimson Tide can’t afford to lose two massive games in the first five weeks of the season.

Let’s not forget, Georgia scored only 28 points against Austin Peay a few weeks back, too. I’m taking Alabama on the road at +3.

Expert Pick: Alabama +3 (-110) at Caesars
