The talented floor general should find a way to turn things around sooner rather than later, as he's averaged at least 18.0 points per game in each of the past three seasons, but he might be in line for fewer touches going forward, as Evan Mobley is likely to operate as the Cavaliers' second-best option on offense behind Donovan Mitchell.

Alongside fellow guard Collin Sexton, the two are proving to be a dangerous scoring backcourt early in the season.

Garland logged 22 points (7-13 FG, 4-8 3Pt, 4-4 FT), six assists, six rebounds and one steal during Wednesday's win versus Charlotte.

Garland was relatively quiet as Cleveland recorded a 21-point lead after two quarters. But while his team slowed down, he stepped up with 16 points (5-7 FG, 4-6 3Pt, 2-2 FT) in the second half. The sophomore will look to continue replicating these types of performances as this season progresses.

The Cavaliers exercised Garland's $7.04 million team option for 2021-22 on Wednesday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.

In addition to Garland, the Cavaliers exercised the third-year options for Dylan Windler and Kevin Porter, while Collin Sexton's fourth-year option was also picked up. Garland is slated to start at point guard in Wednesday's season opener against the Hornets after he averaged 12.3 points, 3.9 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 1.8 triples in 30.9 minutes per game as a rookie in 2019-20.

Garland struggled with his shot, posting a poor 31% field goal percentage despite finishing the game with the second most points on the Cavs. The guard's five assists did tie for the team-high in the game, but Garland will need to find his range if he hopes to improve on middling offensive numbers from his rookie campaign.

While the team will likely continue to prioritize his development in his second professional season, Garland will need to improve his shooting to be an impact player.

The rookie continues to deal with a strained left groin, and Tuesday will mark his fifth straight absence. With Kevin Porter Jr. (concussion) also out, expect Collin Sexton and Matthew Dellavedova to again see extended minutes for the shorthanded Cavs.

Coach J.B. Bickerstaff said Friday that Garland (groin) isn't expected to play Saturday versus the Nuggets or Sunday against the Spurs, Kelsey Russo of The Athletic reports.

The rookie first-round pick didn't practice Friday but was able to go through an individual workout. Garland missed the last two games with the left groin strain and it appears his absence will stretch to at least four contests.

Garland remains fairly inconsistent, but he has at least showcased some steady improvement over the course of the campaign.

Garland is expected to return to action Thursday against the Raptors after resting Tuesday against New Orleans.

The rookie point guard endured a tough start to the season, but he seems to have turned a corner of late and is averaging 15.7 points and 6.0 assists per game during January. He must do a better job at taking care of the ball, however, as he is also averaging 3.2 turnovers per contest during the first month of 2020.

Passing is certainly not a strength for the Cavaliers and so Garland is going to have plenty of opportunities to run the offense. Efficiency can be an issue at times but his recent play has been nothing short of encouraging.

Garland was extremely inconsistent during the first two months of the season, but he has now scored in double digits in each of his last eight outings. The rookie point guard is averaging 16.3 points with 5.3 assists per game over that stretch, and he has dished out seven or more dimes in four of his last six appearances. He will have a tough assignment Monday at the Lakers.

Garland seems to be finding his rhythm in the NBA, putting up 16.0 points, 4.9 assists and 2.3 triples per game over his last seven outings, while shooting 84.2 percent from the line in that span. One game after posting 14 points, three dimes and two steals against this same Pistons squad, the rookie did well to find his shot, with an efficient 57.1 percent from the field in this one. He's produced standard league value over the past five games, and is certainly someone to keep an eye on over the second half of the season.

Garland (ankle) has been cleared to play Saturday against the Timberwolves, Chris Fedor of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Garland was originally tagged questionable due to a sprained right ankle, but he's feeling good enough to play following some pregame activities. This month, he's averaging 11.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 28.2 minutes.

Garland had been recovering from a "clean-up" knee surgery prior to the NBA Draft, but it's a foot injury that held him out Tuesday. According to head coach John Beilein, the issue is a "little slight thing with his foot, he's gonna be fine," per Sam Amico of AmicoHoops.net.
