Nov 16, 2023
Unavailable Thursday
Askew is unavailable for Thursday's game against Montana State with an apparent foot injury, Jake Curtis of Cal Sports report reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear when Askew may have suffered his injury, as the 6-3 guard has averaged 33 minutes per contest over the first three games of the year. No clarity on the extent of his injury has been revealed, but he'll hope to make a quick return with a slew of key games coming up for the Golden Bears. Monty Bowser will step into the starting five for the time being in Askew's absence.
Nov 7, 2023
Quiet in win
Askew accumulated nine points (2-7 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 5-6 FT), five rebounds and two assists across 31 minutes during Monday's 71-66 victory over St. Thomas (MN).
ANALYSIS
Askew was Cal's fourth-leading scorer Monday. He's healthy after dealing with an abdomen injury throughout last season. He'll look to build on averages of 15.5 points per game on 37.8 percent shooting.
Sep 12, 2023
Fully cleared
Askew (abdomen) has been fully cleared for all basketball-related activities, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
ANALYSIS
Barring new setbacks or injuries, Askew will enter California's 2023-24 season healthy. That is welcoming news for the Bears, especially considering he was a lone source of promise during their awful 2022-23 campaign. Despite being limited to 13 games that season, Askew still stepped up by averaging 15.5 points and 3.0 assists. While the 2023-24 Bears do not expect him to carry their load as he did a campaign ago, especially after acquiring much talent via transfer, they are among many parties who have high hopes for what he can do across an entire season.
Jun 16, 2023
Cleared for non-contact
Askew (abdomen) was cleared for non-contact work, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
After undergoing a season ending surgery, Askew has been cleared for non-contact drills. It is unclear how long Askew will continue to rehab, though this is an encouraging sign for his availability moving forward. Askew is a former four-star recruit who averaged 15.5 points per game prior to his injury.
Feb 2, 2023
Out for remainder of season
Askew will miss the rest of the season after undergoing successful sports hernia surgery Wednesday, Jeff Borzello of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew had the surgery Wednesday and is expected to make a full recovery before the start of next season. The Texas transfer averaged a team-leading 15.5 points to go along with 3.4 rebounds and three assists in 31.6 minutes per contest. DeJuan Clayton has been garnering starts in his absence and figures to remain in a starting role the rest of the way.
Jan 28, 2023
Out against Stanford
Askew (undisclosed) is out for Saturday's game against Stanford, Rob Hwang of Write for California reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew missed five games due to a foot injury, but returned to play Jan. 22 against Oregon State. It's unclear why he's sidelined for Saturday's Pac-12 showdown, but it could be a strategy to manage his workload. Dejuan Clayton is likely to take over as the team's starting point guard.
Jan 23, 2023
Big minutes in return
Askew ended Sunday's 68-48 loss to Oregon State with eight points (2-12 FG, 1-5 3Pt, 3-3 FT), one rebound, seven assists and two steals over 33 minutes.
ANALYSIS
While the shooting performance wasn't anything to write home about, that was the case for the entire Cal offense despite getting 33 minutes from their leading scorer in his return from a five-game absence due to a foot injury. Askew at least did log seven dimes for fantasy managers, but the scoring may be a bit tougher to come by now that the Golden Bears are in the heat of conference play.
Jan 22, 2023
Part of starting lineup Sunday
Askew is part of the Bears' starting lineup Sunday versus Oregon State, according to their Twitter account.
ANALYSIS
Askew and Joel Brown were announced as the Bears' starting backcourt Sunday afternoon.
Jan 22, 2023
Available to face Oregon State
Askew (foot) is available to face Oregon State on Sunday, Rob Hwang of Write For California reports.
ANALYSIS
Even though a few injuries have slowed down his junior year, Askew has been a dynamic scorer for California and should play a role here. He's averaging 16.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, and he will be available to feature for the first time since Dec. 29.
Jan 18, 2023
Out once again
Askew (foot) will remain out as California hosts Oregon on Wednesday night, per Rob Hwang of Write For California.
ANALYSIS
Askew's junior year has been a breakout season for the point guard, but it's also been marred by injury. Wednesday's tilt with Oregon will be Askew's eighth missed game. When healthy, he's been a dynamic scorer, logging 16.1 points across 31.5 minutes. His next shot to play will come against Oregon State on Sunday.
Jan 14, 2023
DNP at Washington
Askew (foot) did not play during the Golden Bears' 81-78 loss Saturday at Washington.
ANALYSIS
Askew sat out four games the Golden Bears played from Dec. 31 to Jan. 14. Currently, their next matchup is when they host Oregon on Wednesday.
Jan 11, 2023
Remains out Wednesday
Askew (foot) will not play Wednesday versus Washington State, Bryce Hendricks of Coug Center reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew will miss his third straight game and his fourth over the last five. A target date for a potential return remains up in the air. Dejuan Clayton should continue to get the start in Askew's absence as the team looks to go for three in a row in conference play Wednesday.
Jan 6, 2023
Still out
Askew (foot) has been ruled out for Friday's game against Stanford, Jordan Majewski of SBNation.com reports.

Solid contribution in loss
Askew with seven points (2-3 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, and two assists across 27 minutes during Thursday's 58-43 loss to Utah.
ANALYSIS
Even though Askew finished as one of the leading scorers for the Golden Bears, he struggled to handle the ball finishing with a team-high five turnovers. The junior guard has had an exceptional year thus far, averaging a career-high 16.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists over 31.4 minutes per night.
Dec 29, 2022
Officially starting Thursday
Askew is in the starting lineup for Thursday's game against Utah.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Askew will return to the starting five after a one-game absence due to a foot injury. The Texas transfer has blossomed in his new role at Cal, averaging a career-best 16.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 31.9 minutes per game.
Dec 29, 2022
Available Thursday
Askew (foot) will be available for Thursday's game versus Utah, Rob Hwang of Write for California reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew was forced to sit out the last time Cal took the floor but will be able to return after just a one-game absence. Although it hasn't been announced, it should be expected that he will immediately return to his usual spot in the starting lineup ahead of the team's conference opener.
Dec 21, 2022
Ruled out Wednesday
Askew (foot) has been ruled out for Wednesday's game against UT-Arlington, Rob Hwang of Write for California reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew suffered a foot injury last time out against Santa Clara and will be unable to go in this one. This may have been Cal's best shot for the rest of the season to pick up its first win with Pac-12 play coming up, and now they will have to try to go for it without their best player. Askew will try to return next week against Utah.
Dec 18, 2022
Suffers injury
Askew suffered an injury during the Golden Bears' 71-62 loss Sunday at Santa Clara.
ANALYSIS
Askew injured his right ankle or foot Sunday. He will try to return when the Golden Bears host Texas-Arlington on Wednesday.
Dec 18, 2022
Available at Santa Clara
Askew (illness) is available Sunday at Santa Clara, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
ANALYSIS
A physical illness could have prevented Askew from participating in the Golden Bears' upcoming game. Fortunately for him, he is able to play.
Dec 10, 2022
Scores 17 points
Askew ended Saturday's 82-58 loss to Butler with 17 points (7-20 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 2-3 FT) and three rebounds in 33 minutes.
ANALYSIS
Now that Askew is healthy, fantasy managers should expect him to continue being the 2022-23 Golden Bears' best scorer. He averaged 18.2 points across their first 10 games.
Dec 10, 2022
Returning Saturday
Askew (illness) will be active for Saturday's matchup with Butler, Rob Hwang of Write for California reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew has cleared health and safety protocols and he will make his return Saturday against Butler. The 6-foot-3 junior has been the focal point of California's offense this season, averaging 18.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, three assists and 0.8 steals on 33.8 minutes per game. Askew will look to help the Golden Bears win their first game of the season.
Dec 7, 2022
Out Wednesday night
Askew (illness) won't play in the Bears Wednesday night bout with Eastern Washington, Jeff Goodman of Stadium reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew, California's leading scorer, will miss the Bears' game against Eastern Washington due to COVID. If Askew is in fact positive for the Coronavirus, he may be held out of California's tilt with Butler on Saturday as well.
Dec 6, 2022
Scores 25 in loss
Askew notched 25 points (9-19 FG, 3-8 3Pt, 4-4 FT), five rebounds, two assists and one steal over 37 minutes during Sunday's 81-68 loss to Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Askew knocked down 3-of-8 shots from beyond the arc on route to a 25-point finish on Sunday. The 6-foot-3 junior has been a scoring machine for the Golden Bears this season, logging 18.3 points per game on 39.3/30.9/86.4 shooting splits. Despite his high-energy performances, California will look to achieve their first win of the season when they take on Eastern Washington this Wednesday.
Dec 1, 2022
High scorer in losing effort
Askew racked up 23 points (7-21 FG, 2-7 3Pt, 7-7 FT), four rebounds, two assists and one steal across 32 minutes during Wednesday's 66-51 loss to USC.
ANALYSIS
Askew is finally getting the chance to be a high-volume shooter at his third collegiate destination, and while he's scored at least 12 points in all eight games this season and is averaging 17.5 ppg, it's came at a price. Askew's Golden Bears are a woeful 0-8 on the season and appear well on track to finish in the cellar of the Pac-12 conference.
Nov 17, 2022
Leads team in loss
Askew accumulated 13 points (5-14 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-3 FT), five rebounds and four assists over 32 minutes during Tuesday's 64-62 loss to UC San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Askew tallied 13 points, shooting 5-of-14 from the field, during Tuesday's loss to UC San Diego. The 6-foot-3 junior has been California's leading scorer through three games with the program, but he has struggled with efficiency. Despite scoring 16.3 points per game, the junior point guard has knocked down just 39.1 percent of his shots from the field. Askew will look to improve his shot selection and turn things around for California during Friday's matchup with Southern University.
Nov 8, 2022
Scores 19 in program debut
Askew recorded 19 points (7-20 FG, 1-6 3Pt, 4-5 FT), three rebounds and four assists over 35 minutes during Monday's 75-65 loss to UC Davis.
ANALYSIS
Askew was inefficient from the field during Monday's loss to UC Davis, but he still managed to lead the Golden Bears in scoring. The 6-foot-3 junior appeared in 34 games for Texas last season, contributing 2.1 points, 1.3 assists and 0.8 steals on 14.8 minutes per game. Askew should handle a much larger role for California in 2022.
Jul 14, 2022
Eligible for 2022 season
Askew has received a waiver from the NCAA and will be eligible to compete in the 2022 season, per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
ANALYSIS
The guard transferred to the Golden Bears in early May, so his status for the upcoming season was in question and hinged on the NCAA approving him to play. Now, Askew is officially eligible to play in 2022 and will look to make an impact with his third school. In 2021, Askew played in 34 games but started just three, averaging 2.1 points, 0.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
May 6, 2022
Commits to California
Askew committed to California on Friday, Joe Tipton of On3 Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew will now join his third different school in as many seasons after not finding a good fit at Kentucky or Texas during his first two collegiate campaigns. The 6-foot-3 guard could benefit greatly from an increased role, though his consistency has been a problem thus far in his career.
Apr 19, 2022
Back in transfer portal
Askew entered his name into the transfer portal Tuesday, Jeff Howe of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After transferring from Kentucky to Texas ahead of last season, Askew has once again entered the transfer portal. In his one season at Texas, the guard averaged 2.1 points and 1.3 assists while playing 14.8 minutes per game.
Dec 28, 2021
Coming off bench
Askew is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against Incarnate Word.
ANALYSIS
Askew started each of the last three games after he had come off the bench in eight straight to begin the year. The Kentucky transfer has been pretty ineffective while on the floor this year, as he's averaging just 1.8 points on 31.8 percent shooting in 15.4 minutes per contest.
Dec 14, 2021
Starting Tuesday
Askew is in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
ANALYSIS
Askew will make his first start of the season and his first start as a member of the Longhorns as he enters the first five in place of Marcus Carr. The Kentucky transfer saw a season-low six minutes against Seton Hall last Thursday but head coach Chris Beard seems to be giving guys like Askew an opportunity to start against a lesser opponent like Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The 6-3 sophomore has averaged 2.3 points and 1.9 assists in 14.4 minutes per game thus far.
Oct 27, 2021
Viewed as star by coach
Coach Chris Beard indicated Thursday that Askew "could be one of the all-time greats," Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman reports.
ANALYSIS
This is certainly high praise from the Longhorns' new head man and could indicate that Askew is in line for a hefty role for Texas this season. In his lone season at Kentucky, Askew racked up 6.5 points, 2.9 assists and 2.6 rebounds over 28.9 minutes per contest, though his shooting was an issue at 34.5 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from beyond the arc. He'll need to improve that efficiency to take the next step in 2021-22.
Apr 13, 2021
Joining Beard at Texas
Askew has committed to transfer to Texas, Travis Branham of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew will join up with new Texas hire Chris Beard in Austin after spending one up and down season with Kentucky. Askew was the top point guard for the class of 2021 before deciding to reclassify. The Sacramento native averaged 6.5 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game last season and should play a key role next season for the Longhorns.
Apr 5, 2021
Transferring out of Kentucky
Askew is in the transfer portal, Travis Branham of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew had an up and down season for the Wildcats this past year. He started 20-of-25 games and averaged 6.5 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per contest. Askew would have been the top rated point guard in the class of 2021 had he not decided to reclassify. There will certainly be plenty of programs looking to give Askew a fresh start.
Mar 6, 2021
Coming off bench Saturday
Askew won't start Saturday's game against South Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Jacob Toppin will start instead. Askew will likely see his usual slate of minutes, as he saw 30 minutes against Florida during his last appearance off the bench.
Feb 8, 2021
New career high Saturday
Askew managed 14 points (5-7 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 3-3 FT), five rebounds, four assists and two steals during Saturday's loss to Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
This was Askew's first outing in double figures since Jan. 12, snapping a streak of five straight games with under seven points. The freshman's 14 points Saturday were also a new career high and so far over 17 appearances for the Wildcats, Askew is averaging 7.1 points, 3.0 assists and 2.8 rebounds.
Jan 12, 2021
Adds nine in win
Askew had nine points (2-5 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 4-4 FT), three rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in Saturday's win over Florida.
ANALYSIS
The freshman started for a fourth straight and responded with at least nine points for a third consecutive outing. Askew has converted at least one three in each of his past four outings. In 10 appearances this year, Askew is averaging 7.7 points and 2.7 assists per game.
Dec 29, 2020
Starts but struggles
Askew had seven points (3-9 FG, 1-5 3Pt), three rebounds, three assists and two steals in Saturday's loss to Louisville.
ANALYSIS
Askew returned to the starting lineup after coming off the bench for the previous two games. However, the freshman struggled overall from the floor, shooting just 33 percent. In seven games played, Askew is posting 6.6 rebounds, 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per outing.
Dec 26, 2020
Back in starting five
Askew is in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against Louisville, Shannon Russell of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew re-enters the starting lineup after a two-game hiatus of coming off the bench. He'll replace Terrance Clark who is out of the starting unit for the first time this season. Askew is averaging 6.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and two assists in 26.8 minutes this season and will accompany Davion Mintz in the backcourt as the Wildcats try to upset Louisville on the road during Saturday's in-state matchup.
Dec 12, 2020
Not starting Saturday
Askew isn't starting Saturday's game against Notre Dame, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew was in the starting lineup for each of the first four games of his collegiate career, but he had minimal output in each of the last three contests. He'll retreat to the bench Saturday with Davion Mintz starting in his place.
