Nov 30, 2025
Clears concussion protocol
Al-Shaair cleared the league's concussion protocol and returned to Sunday's game against the Colts, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair did not miss much before returning to his role as the Texans' middle linebacker and defensive signal caller. Christian Harris will take a backseat to the captain and will likely not have many more defensive snaps.
Nov 30, 2025
Possible concussion
Al-Shaair is being evaluated for a possible concussion and is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Colts.

Helps cause turnover in TNF win
Al-Shaair posted seven tackles (four solo) and one pass defense during the Texans' 23-19 win over the Bills on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was given the green light to play Thursday after battling through a knee injury and illness during Week 12 prep. He ended up playing every single defensive snap, and he tipped a Josh Allen pass that was picked off by Calen Bullock late in the second quarter, which led to a Ka'imi Fairbairn 43-yard field goal four plays later. Al-Shaair is up to 71 combined tackles through 11 regular-season games, which surpassed his total during the 2024 season (70 tackles, also over 11 regular-season games).

Cleared to play TNF
Al-Shaair (knee/illness) does not have an injury designation ahead of Thursday's game against Buffalo.
ANALYSIS

Nov 17, 2025
Estimated as LP to open week
The Texans listed Al-Shaair (knee/illness) as a limited participant on Monday's estimated practice report.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair managed a knee issue during Week 11 prep and played every single snap during Sunday's 16-13 win over the Titans, when he logged six tackles (one solo). He also appears to be under the weather in addition to working through his knee injury, so his practice participation over the next two days will shed light on his chances of playing against Buffalo on Thursday. Al-Shaair has accumulated 65 tackles (30 solo), six pass defenses, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery through 10 regular-season games.
Nov 13, 2025
Practices in full Thursday
Al-Shaair (knee) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair upgraded to a full participant in Thursday's practice after being limited in Wednesday's session. If the starting middle linebacker can log another full session he has a chance to avoid an injury tag heading into Sunday's divisional matchup against the Titans, his former team. Through three "revenge" matchups over the past two seasons Al-Shaair has logged 13 tackles (seven solo) including 1.0 sacks, and will look to expand on that resume if he is able to suit up for Sunday's game.
Nov 12, 2025
Working through knee issue
Al-Shaair (knee) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair may have tweaked his knee during the Texans' Week 9 win over the Jaguars, when he logged eight tackles (three solo) and a pass defense while playing every single defensive snap. He had his practice reps limited to open the week, but he has two more opportunities to log a full session and avoid an injury tag heading into Sunday's AFC South clash against the Titans, whom he played for in 2023.

Nine stops in loss to Denver
Al-Shaair recorded nine tackles (four solo) in Sunday's loss to the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaiir's nine tackles were his second-most of the season, as he's started all eight games and played 98 percent of the Texans' defensive snaps. He's up to 51 tackles (26 solo), five pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery on the campaign.
Oct 30, 2025
Logs four tackles vs. Niners
Al-Shaair posted four tackles (one solo) and a pass defense during the Texans' 26-15 win over the 49ers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair played every single defensive snap for a second consecutive game and finished tied for third on the Texans in tackles. His production has dipped as of late; he has accumulated just 17 tackles over his last four games after posting 25 tackles through the first three games of the regular season. Al-Shaair is up to 42 tackles through seven games and is on pace to surpass his total from 2024 (70 tackles across 11 regular-season games).
Oct 28, 2025
Modest production in win over 49ers
Al-Shaair recorded four tackles (one solo) during Houston's win over San Francisco on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair has now failed to rack up five or more tackles in three of seven regular-season appearances to begin the 2025 campaign, and he's still looking to pick up his first sack of the year. The veteran linebacker has, however, already logged five pass breakups, tying his total from last season. Al-Shaair could be busy attempting to stop the run Week 9 at home against the Broncos.
Oct 7, 2025
Logs four tackles vs. Baltimore
Al-Shaair registered four tackles (two solo) and one pass defense during the Texans' 44-10 win over the Ravens on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair played a season-low 38 defensive snaps Sunday, but the Texans had just 43 snaps on defense as the offense dominated time of possession in a Week 5 blowout win. The veteran linebacker has just seven tackles over the past two games and is up to 32 tackles (19 solo), three pass defenses and one forced fumble over the first five games of the regular season.
Sep 29, 2025
Logs three stops in Week 4
Al-Shaair finished Sunday's 26-0 win over Tennessee with three tackles (two solo) and a defensed pass.
ANALYSIS
This was easily Al-Shaair's lowest tackle of the campaign, but that's partly because the Titans' offense was so overmatched that it had the ball for less than 22 minutes of game time. Al-Shaair added a defensed pass for a Texans defense that dominated from start to finish.
Sep 22, 2025
Racks up eight stops in Week 3
Al-Shaair recorded eight tackles (four solo) in a loss to the Jaguars on Sunday.

Double-digit tackles Monday
Al-Shaair recorded 10 total tackles (eight solo) and one pass defended in Monday night's 20-19 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old linebacker was one of two Texans to register double-digit stops in Monday's loss, finishing second on the team behind Henry To'oTo'o's 11 tackles. Al-Shaair was among the league's most productive inside linebackers in 2024, recording 70 total tackles, including 2.0 sacks, four passes defended and two forced fumbles over just 11 regular-season contests. He's expected to continue causing problems for opposing offenses as the Texans play the Jaguars in Week 3.

May 30, 2025
Past knee injury
Al-Shaair (knee) participated in Wednesday's organized team activities, Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS

The Florida Atlantic product served as Houston's top middle linebacker last season, recording 70 total tackles, including 2.0 sacks, four passes defended and two forced fumbles over 11 regular-season contests. With Al-Shaair back at full health, he's expected to remain one of the Texans' top defensive playmakers in 2025.

Records 70 tackles in 2024
Al-Shaair (knee) finished the 2024 season with 70 tackles (45 solo), including 2.0 sacks, four pass breakups and two forced fumbles across 11 regular-season games.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair missed three games with a knee injury and was then suspended later in the year after a helmet-to-helmet hit concussed Trevor Lawrence in Week 15. Al-Shaair returned for Week 18 and started both playoff contests but again dealt with knee issues to close out the campaign. After recording double-digit tackles eight times in 2023 with the Titans, Al-Shaair did it just twice this past season in Houston, with none coming after Week 3. The veteran linebacker has two years left on a three-year, $34 million deal.

ANALYSIS

He twice visited the medical tent during the first quarter of Saturday's matchup against the Chiefs and has been deemed questionable to return to the contest. Neville Hewitt has entered at linebacker in Al-Shaair's stead.
Jan 18, 2025
Officially active Saturday
Al-Shaair (knee) is active for Saturday's AFC divisional-round matchup against Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Al-Shaair will suit up for the battle against the defending Super Bowl champions despite dealing with a knee injury. The issue caused the veteran linebacker to miss practice Tuesday, but he was able to participate in a limited fashion both Wednesday and Thursday. Al-Shaair played all but one defensive snap last Saturday against the Chargers in the wild-card round and posted six tackles.
Jan 18, 2025
Expected to play
Al-Shaair (knee) is expected to play Saturday against the Chiefs, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair is officially listed as questionable, but Wilson's report cites sources that indicate both the linebacker and running back Joe Mixon (ankle) are "good to go" for Saturday's divisional-round playoff game. Al-Shaair played 98 percent of the defensive snaps in last week's win over the Chargers, checking out of the game for one play after sustaining the knee injury, and finished with six tackles and two quarterback hits.
Jan 16, 2025
Questionable to face Kansas City
Al-Shaair (knee) is listed as questionable for Saturday's AFC divisional-round game against the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair had a DNP/LP/LP practice log this week due to a knee injury he picked up during the Texans' wild-card win against the Chargers. Given the stakes of Saturday's game, Al-Shaair likely leans more towards the probable side of playing, though his official status will be known approximately 90 minutes before the 4:30 p.m. ET kickoff, when Houston announces its list of inactive players.
Jan 15, 2025
Limited in Wednesday's practice
Al-Shaair (knee) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair is managing a knee injury that he picked up during the Texans' AFC wild-card win over the Chargers this past Saturday. He was able to log a limited session Wednesday after being a DNP on Tuesday, but unless he suffers a setback he is expected to play in the Texans' AFC divisional-round clash against the Chiefs on Saturday, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. Al-Shaair would likely avoid an injury designation all altogether if he were to practice in full Thursday.
Jan 14, 2025
Managing knee injury
Al-Shaair didn't practice Tuesday due to a knee injury.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair played all but one defensive snap in Houston's wild-card win over the Chargers on Saturday, but he appears to have hurt his knee during the contest The veteran linebacker missed three games with a knee issue earlier in the campaign, which adds an extra element of concern about his current injury. Al-Shaair's practice status Wednesday and Thursday should shed more light on his likelihood of playing Saturday against the Chiefs in the AFC divisional round. Devin White and Neville Hewitt would be the primary candidates for an increased role if Al-Shaair is unable to suit up.
Dec 26, 2024
Eligible to return Week 18
Al-Shaair had his three-game suspension lifted Thursday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was suspended Dec. 3 following an illegal hit on Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) in Week 13. Al-Shaair has now sat out the required three games and is eligible to suit up Sunday, Jan. 5 against Tennessee in Houston's regular-season finale. The veteran linebacker will presumably reprise his starting role as the Texans gear up for the postseason.
Dec 4, 2024
Suspension upheld
Al-Shaair's three-game suspension was upheld Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was given a three-game suspension Monday after his hit to the head of Trevor Lawrence the previous day. Lawrence was knocked out of the game with a concussion and remains in concussion protocol. He's been ruled out for the remainder of the season, though it's partly to do with the quarterback opting to undergo surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder. Al-Shaair will be eligible to return for the Texans' Week 18 regular-season finale. Houston will lean on Devin White, Henry To'oTo'o and Nevile Hewitt while Al-Shaair is out.

Gets three-game ban for illegal hit
The NFL announced Tuesday that Al-Shaair has received a three-game suspension for his violent hit on quarterback Trevor Lawrence in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Jaguars, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
In its statement, the NFL said that Al-Shaair's suspension was in part imposed due to "repeated violations of rules intended to protect the health and safety of players." The 27-year-old linebacker had previously been fined for roughing the passer and facemask penalties in 2023 as a member of the Titans, and he also drew a fine for punching Bears running back Roschon Johnson in Week 2 and was assessed a 15-yard penalty for a late hit on Titans running back Tony Pollard in Week 12. The late hit on Lawrence -- which resulted in the quarterback sustaining a concussion -- appears to have been the last straw before the NFL elected to suspend Al-Shaair for the first time in his career. Assuming Al-Shaair chooses not to appeal the ban, he'll be eligible to return to action Week 18 in Tennessee. Devin White could be the next man up to pick up more snaps at linebacker alongside Henry To'oTo'o and Neville Hewitt while Al-Shaair is out of the lineup, though Houston could get Christian Harris (calf) back from injured res
Dec 2, 2024
Ejected after illegal hit
Al-Shaair was ejected from Sunday's 23-20 win over the Jaguars with 4:20 remaining in the second quarter for an illegal hit on quarterback Trevor Lawrence. He was credited with five tackles across 19 snaps before his disqualification.
ANALYSIS
The play in question occurred when Lawrence slid at the end of a six-yard scramble, with Al-Shaair arriving late and driving shoulder into Lawrence's head. A fight between the two teams ensued after Al-Shaair's late hit, which resulted in Lawrence sustaining a concussion. Al-Shaair took to social media Monday to apologize to Lawrence while noting there was no ill intent to harm him, but the linebacker could still be subject to discipline from the league in the form of a fine and/or suspension.

Oct 18, 2024
Missing Week 7
Al-Shaair (knee) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Packers.
ANALYSIS

Oct 13, 2024
Ruled out
Al-Shaair (knee) will not return Sunday against the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair had three tackles before exiting late in the first half. It's hard to know if his inability to return is a case of the significance of the injury or the lopsided score of the game. More clarity on the severity of his injury could come after the game or later in the week.

ANALYSIS

Oct 5, 2024
Now questionable for Week 5
Al-Shaair (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Given that he's dealing with an illness so close to Sunday's game, Al-Shaair' status may not be known until 90 minutes before the 1:00pm ET kickoff. If Al-Shaair cannot play, Neville Hewitt and Del'Shawn Phillips would be the top candidates to start at outside linebacker opposite Henry To'oTo'o.

Al-Shaair was able to play 100 percent of the team's defensive snaps in last Thursday's loss to the Steelers, so it's not clear when the 26-year-old picked up the injury. He'll work to get back on the field before the end of the week with a matchup against the Buccaneers on tap Sunday.
Nov 4, 2023
Makes 10 tops
Al-Shaair recorded 10 tackles in Thursday's 20-16 loss to the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair made double-digit tackles for the fourth consecutive game and also broke up a pass. He's on pace to easily surpass his career-high of 102 tackles in a season, and he remains a solid run-stopper in the middle of the Titans' offense.
Oct 30, 2023
Reaches double-digit tackles again
Al-Shaair recorded 11 tackles and recovered a fumble in Sunday's 28-23 win over the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair continued his excellent season, as he has three consecutive double-digit tackle performances. He also recovered a fumble midway through the second quarter to help set up a short field for the offense on a drive that resulted in a touchdown. Overall, Al-Shaair has 73 tackles in seven games and will easily surpass his previous best of 102 tackles in a season if he can remain healthy.
Oct 16, 2023
Leads Titans in tackles again
Al-Shaair recorded 15 tackles (nine solo) in Sunday's 24-16 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair found himself very busy in Week 6 against a run-heavy Baltimore offense, and he tallied 15 tackles for the second straight game. After its Week 7 bye, Tennessee will host another run-first offense in the Falcons in Week 8.
Oct 9, 2023
Racks up 15 stops in loss
Al-Shaair tallied 15 tackles (seven solo) in a Week 5 loss to the Colts on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair led Tennessee with his season-high 15 stops. It was the linebacker's first double-digit tackle total of the campaign, though he recorded nine stops in both Week 3 and Week 4. With 47 tackles through five games, Al-Shaair appears well on his way to surpassing the career-high 102 stops he recorded with San Francisco in 2021.
Oct 3, 2023
Disruptive in Week 4 victory
Al-Shaair totaled nine tackles (five solo), including one for loss, and added two QB hits along with two defensed passes in a 27-3 Week 4 win over the Bengals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair played every defensive snap for Tennessee in the contest and tied his season high with nine stops. The veteran linebacker is enjoying a solid first season with the Titans, leading the team with 32 tackles through four games. He's on pace to easily surpass the career-best mark of 102 stops he set with San Francisco in 2021.
Sep 25, 2023
One sack in loss
Al-Shaair had nine tackles (three solo) including one sack in Sunday's 27-3 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair led Tennessee's linebacker corps in tackles Sunday and was tied with cornerback Kristian Fulton on the day. Al-Shaair played a pivotal role in limiting the Browns to just 78 rushing yards on 31 carries (2.5 YPC), but the Titans struggled to contain Deshaun Watson, who threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns on 81.8 percent passing. Al-Shaair and the Titans will look to get back on track against the Bengals in Week 4.
Mar 14, 2023
Moving to Tennessee
Al-Shaiir is expected sign with the Titans, Dianna Russini of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaiir missed nine games over the past two years for the 49ers. He posted 3.7 tackles per game last year, though his best season was in 2021, when he played 655 snaps and averaged 7.8 tackles per game. He'll likely compete for work with a deep group of outside linebackers for playing time.
Feb 9, 2023
Role decrease in 2022
Al-Shaair finished the 2022 regular season with 44 tackles (20 solo) and no auxiliary stats across 12 games with the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was coming off of a career year in 2021 (102 tackles), but an injury early in the season cost him his starting job alongside Fred Warner. Dre Greenlaw took over the weakside linebacker position, leaving Al-Shaair to man the Sam position on base formations only. The 25-year-old will now become an unrestricted free agent, providing great athleticism and coverage ability for potential suitors this upcoming offseason.

Ditches IR ahead of Week 10
San Francisco activated Al-Shaair (knee) from its injured reserve list Saturday ahead of Sunday's game versus the Chargers, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
After missing the 49ers' last five games recovering from a sprained MCL, Al-Shaair seems to be ready to go for Sunday night. He'd join Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw in San Francisco's front seven for Week 10.
Nov 7, 2022
Anticipates playing in Week 10
Al-Shaair (knee) said Monday that he expects to play Sunday versus the Chargers, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was placed on San Francisco's injured reserve list after he sustained a sprained MCL in Week 3 at Denver and has stayed there since, but it now seems as though he's close to returning to game action. Once he's ready to go, he'll rotate in at linebacker with Oren Burks and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles.
Nov 7, 2022
Designated to return
Al-Shaair (knee) was designated to return from IR on Monday, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Since Al-Shaair suffered a sprained MCL during San Fransisco's Week 3 contest versus Denver, he was placed on injured reserve and has missed each of the team's previous five games as a result. However, Monday's designation allows a 21-day window for the 25-year-old to rejoin the 49ers' active roster and hopefully make a return against the Chargers following San Fran's Week 9 bye. Al-Shaair is slated to serve as a rotational linebacker when deemed fully healthy, alongside Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and Dre Greenlaw.
Oct 3, 2022
Lands on IR
The 49ers placed Al-Shaair (knee) on injured reserve Monday.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks after spraining his MCL during the team's Week 3 loss to the Broncos. In a corresponding move, the 49ers filled his roster spot by promoting veteran wideout Willie Snead to the active roster. In Al-Shaair's absence, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles is expected to garner an increased role next to Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw in San Francisco's linebacker corps.
Sep 26, 2022
Sidelined 6-to-8 weeks
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Al-Shaair will miss 6-to-8 weeks with a sprained MCL, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair will likely sit out until at least Week 12 after sustaining a sprained MCL during San Francisco's loss to Seattle on Sunday. The fourth-year linebacker recorded 102 tackles, two sacks, five passes defended, one interception and two fumble recoveries over 13 games last season. Al-Shaair also tallied 11 tackles while playing just 65 defensive snaps from Weeks 1 through 3, and his absence will leave San Francisco's linebacker corps with an important role to fill moving forward.
Sep 25, 2022
Diagnosed with MCL sprain
Al-Shaair sustained an MCL sprain during the 49ers' 11-10 loss to the Broncos on Sunday, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair exited Sunday's matchup in the second quarter, and it seems possible that he'll be forced to miss additional time following his diagnosis. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles handled additional work down the stretch for the 49ers and will likely continue to see increased playing time if Al-Shaair is sidelined.
Sep 25, 2022
Dealing with knee injury
Al-Shaair won't return to Sunday's game against the Broncos due to a knee injury, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair sustained a knee injury in the second quarter and was ruled out by the team at halftime. Prior to his departure, he led the team with five tackles (two solo). Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles should continue to fill in for Al-Shaair for the remainder of the game.
Jul 26, 2022
Has the okay for camp
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Al-Shaair (shoulder) has been cleared to participate in training camp, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan did qualify that Al-Shaair would be brought along slowly, but it's good news either way for the fourth-year linebacker out of Florida Atlantic. He saw 13 starts and registered 102 tackles in 2021, so he should be considered very likely to start next to Fred Warner in 2022.
May 24, 2022
Not ready for OTAs
Al-Shaair (shoulder) is running on the sidelines, but he is not participating in OTAs, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair had shoulder and knee surgery earlier in the offseason and has yet to recover enough to partake in OTAs. The three-year pro had a breakout season in 2021, recording 100 tackles, two sacks and five passes defensed, while also forcing two turnovers. He should be recovered in time to fully participate in training camp, and be an integral part of the 49ers' linebacker unit in the season ahead.
Apr 25, 2022
Signs new deal
Al-Shaair signed his restricted free agent tender Monday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair had a breakout 2021 campaign, recording 102 tackles (58 solo), two sacks, five passes defensed, an interception, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. All of which matched or became career highs. The 24-year-old went undrafted out of Florida Atlantic and spent the majority of the previous two seasons contributing on special teams. Al-Shaair will look to build on his 2021 success next season.
Mar 16, 2022
Receives second-round tender
Al-Shaair, a restricted free agent, received a second-round contract tender from the 49ers on Tuesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Any interested teams will now need to surrender a second-round pick in order to sign Al-Shaair as a restricted free agent. The 2019 UDFA out of Florida Atlantic saw most of his action on special teams across his first two NFL seasons, but he took a major step forward last season and totaled 102 tackles (58 solo), two sacks, one interception and one forced fumble in 13 games.
Jan 20, 2022
Practices fully Wednesday
Al-Shaair (knee) was a full practice participant Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was limited at Tuesday's practice but had no limitations at Wednesday's session. He sat out the final two games of the regular season but returned for the playoff win over Dallas and had five tackles (three solo) while playing 54 percent of the defensive snaps.
Jan 18, 2022
Logs limited practice
Al-Shaair (knee) logged a limited practice Tuesday, Kelana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair missed the last two games of the season for San Francisco before returning for their wild-card win over the Cowboys on Sunday. However, he did play a season-low 54 percent of the snaps. Whether or not his limited practice was more of a maintenance decision or he's truly in jeopardy of missing Saturday's divisional-round game with the Packers remains to be seen. His practice level will be worth monitoring as this week progresses.
Jan 16, 2022
Active for postseason opener
Al-Shaair (knee) is active for Sunday's wild-card matchup against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair hasn't played since Week 16 and didn't practice Friday after being limited during the first two sessions of the week, so his status come as a bit of a surprise. Nonetheless, the 49ers will have one of their top tacklers (102 through 13 games) back when they face Dak Prescott and the Cowboys' high-powered offense.
Jan 14, 2022
DNP Friday
Al-Shaair (knee) did not practice Friday and is questionable for Sunday against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was able to log limited practices Wednesday and Thursday, but it seems he may have taken a step back by not practicing Friday. However, it's possible the team didn't want to push him ahead of Sunday's game after a three-week absence. With Marcell Harris (Achilles) also questionable, the 49ers' linebacker unit could be weakened against the Cowboys, although both did miss the 49ers' victory over the Rams in Week 18.
Jan 14, 2022
On track for wild-card action
General Manager John Lynch said Friday that Al-Shaair (knee) is expected to suit up for Sunday's playoff matchup in Dallas, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair missed the last three games of the regular season due to a knee injury, but he's trending in the right direction for Sunday's playoff contest. Friday's injury report will provide an official update on Al-Shaair's status.
Jan 12, 2022
Returns to practice
Al-Shaair (knee) was a limited participant at Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
The linebacker missed each of the 49ers' last two games while dealing with a knee issue, making Wednesday's limited effort a positive sign for his chances to play Sunday against the Cowboys. Al-Shaair's status at practice the rest of the week will provide additional clarity towards his availability for the team's Wild Card game this weekend.
Jan 9, 2022
Won't play Sunday
Al-Shaair (knee) is inactive for Sunday against the Rams, Kelana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was expected to miss the last two games of the season, although he was considered questionable for Sunday. After not practicing at all this week, he will miss a pivotal game that will help determine whether the 49ers will make the playoffs. With Al-Shaair out, Curtis Robinson will likely see extra work.
Jan 7, 2022
Questionable against Rams
Al-Shaair (knee) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was expected to miss the final two games of the regular season due to his knee injury, and he was held out of practice this week. Coach Kyle Shanahan isn't yet sure whether the linebacker will be able to play, but it's encouraging that he has a chance to suit up in Week 18.
Dec 27, 2021
Likely out two games
Al-Shaair (knee) is expected to miss at least two games to close out the regular season, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair suffered a knee sprain in Thursday's loss to the Titans. His chances to play again this season will likely depend on if the 49ers can secure a playoff spot. In his expected absence, Marcell Harris and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles are candidates to see expanded roles.
Dec 23, 2021
Suffers knee injury
Al-Shaair suffered a knee injury Thursday against the Titans and will undergo an MRI on Friday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair exited the game in third quarter, and coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the injury after the game. Any game action that Al-Shaair is forced to miss would be a serious blow to San Francisco's defense, as he's racked up an impressive 102 total tackles across 13 games this season. That said, the severity of the injury is currently unknown, with more clarity to come after test results are announced.
Dec 23, 2021
Active against Titans
Al-Shaair (elbow) is active Thursday against the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair's status came down to a game-time decision, but he'll play and occupy his usual starting linebacker role. Prior to sitting out against the Falcons last week, Al-Shaair racked up an impressive 26 tackles and 1.5 sacks over the previous two games.
Dec 22, 2021
Questionable against Tennessee
Al-Shaair (elbow) is questionable for Thursday's game against the Titans, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Al-Shaair would likely be a game-time decision for Thursday's matchup, so it's not very surprising to see him carry a questionable designation. He was limited at practice Monday and Tuesday, while Marcell Harris should see increased work if Al-Shaair is unavailable.
Dec 20, 2021
Likely game-time call for Week 16
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Al-Shaair's (elbow) status for Thursday's game against the Titans likely won't be decided until kickoff, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Shanahan said he's "holding out hope" that Al-Shaair will be able to give it a go after sitting out Sunday's win over the Falcons. The linebacker is just four tackles shy of 100 and will almost certainly reach that threshold if given the green light to suit up come Thursday.
Dec 19, 2021
Won't face Atlanta
Al-Shaair (elbow) is inactive for Sunday's game against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was doubtful for the game after failing to log a practice throughout the week. It will mark his second absence of the season and also leaves a significant void in San Francisco's defense as Al-Shaair has racked up 96 tackles across 12 games this season. Marcell Harris is likely to earn a more significant role in Al-Shaair's absence.
Dec 17, 2021
Not likely against Falcons
Al-Shaair (elbow) is doubtful for Sunday's game against Atlanta, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair picked up the injury in Sunday's Week 14 win over Cincinnati and has not practiced at all throughout the week. IHis absence would leave a significant hole in the 49ers' defense, as he's racked up 96 total tackles with five passes defended, 1.5 sacks and one interception across 12 games.
Dec 16, 2021
Sits out Wednesday's practice
Al-Shaair (elbow) didn't participate at Wednesday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old underwent an MRI after suffering the elbow injury Sunday and is sitting out to start Week 15. According to Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News, Al-Shaair did some work on the side with training staff, though he had his elbows braced.
Dec 12, 2021
Needs MRI
Al-Shaair (elbow) will receive an MRI on Monday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair left the 49ers' game against the Bengals early with the injury. Any extended absence for one of the leaders of the 49ers' defense will be difficult to replace, but Marcell Harris would likely be called upon to step up into a larger role.
Dec 12, 2021
Will not return
Al-Shaair (elbow) will not return Sunday against the Bengals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair's exit came late in the game with a trip to the locker room. Any kind of extended absence for Al-Shaair would be a significant blow to the 49ers' defense, as they try and make a push for the playoffs. Before exiting he had recorded eight tackles and a sack.
Dec 12, 2021
Leaves with injury
Al-Shaair (elbow) is questionable to return Sunday against the Bengals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair stayed down on the field for a while before making his way to the sidelines. Once there, he was carted off to the locker room, which doesn't sound promising for his return. In his absence, Marcell Harris will likely take over the weakside linebacker position.
Dec 6, 2021
Monster IDP performance
Al-Shaair recorded 16 tackles (11 solo) and half of a sack in Sunday's 30-23 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Both Fred Warner (hamstring) and Dre Greenlaw (abdomen) were sidelined Sunday, leaving Al-Shaair to serve as the 49ers' top linebacker. The 23-year-old was up to the task, setting new career highs in tackles (16) and sacks (0.5). Al-Shaair was already a starter alongside Warner this season, and he is currently on pace to break the century mark in combined tackles for the first time in his career (currently has 86 total tackles through 11 games). Warner and Greenlaw are both questionable heading into Week 14, but Al-Shaair will retain IDP value if either player misses the tilt against the Bengals next Sunday.
Nov 29, 2021
Takes over as top LB
Al-Shaair had eight tackles (seven solo) and a fumble recovery in Sunday's 34-26 win over Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Both Fred Warner (hamstring) and Dre Greenlaw (groin) left Sunday's game and neither returned, leaving Al-Shaair as the 49ers' top option at linebacker. The athletic coverage backer could see a big uptick in IDP value if both of his teammates miss any time (which seems like a realistic possibility). Al-Shaair's first chance to start at the Mike position will be against Seattle in Week 13.
Nov 10, 2021
Nine tackles in loss
Al-Shaair produced nine tackles (four solo) and one pass deflection during Sunday's loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair returned from a one game-absence to produce another solid outing against the Cardinals. The 24-year-old linebacker has recorded at least seven tackles in five of seven contests this season and has 52 total tackles. His tackle production will likely continue to offer fantasy managers a high-floor option in IDP leagues.
Nov 5, 2021
Should play Sunday
Al-Shaair (concussion) no longer carries an injury designation and should play Sunday against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was able to practice in full all week after missing the Cardinals' Week 8 win over Chicago. His return will be welcomed after logging more than 90 percent of the snaps every week he's played since the season opener. Al-Shaair should slide back into his starting role as the 49ers' strong-side linebacker.
Nov 3, 2021
Records full practice
Al-Shaair (concussion) was able to log a full practice for the 49ers on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was forced to miss the 49ers' win over Chicago as he was still in the league's concussion protocols. While it's uncertain if the linebacker has cleared concussion protocols yet, there is optimism that Al-Shaair will be able to return against the Cardinals as he fully practiced Wednesday. Expect Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles to see an increased role Sunday if Al-Shaair can't suit up.
Oct 30, 2021
Downgraded to out
Al-Shaair (concussion) has been ruled out of Sunday's game against Chicago, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair is set to miss his first game of the season. As such, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles looks likely to extra snaps Sunday.
Oct 29, 2021
Considered doubtful
The 49ers have deemed Al-Shaair (concussion) as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Bears, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair still has a chance to clear concussion protocol, but that seems to be a stretch at this point. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles would likely be in line to fill in at strongside linebacker should he ultimately get ruled out.
Oct 27, 2021
Misses practice Wednesday
Al-Shaair (concussion) was unable to participate in the 49ers' practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair sustained a concussion in the 49ers' Week 7 loss to the Colts. The linebacker is still in the concussion protocols ahead of San Francisco's Week 8 matchup with the Bears. Expect Tyrell Adams or Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles to see extended snaps Sunday if Al-Shaair is unable to suit up.
Oct 25, 2021
In concussion protocol
Al-Shaair is in concussion protocol following Sunday's 30-18 loss to the Colts, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair suffered a concussion during Sunday nights matchup, and now he must clear the concussion protocol ahead of a Week 8 tilt against the Bears. The linebacker's progress will be worth monitoring as the team practices this week.
Oct 4, 2021
Another 10-tackle day
Al-Shaair notched 10 tackles (six solo) during Sunday's 28-21 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair is still looking to pick up his first sack of the season, but his tackling floor is enough to provide IDP utility. The starting linebacker will have another divisional matchup on deck Week 5, in the form of a road game against the Cardinals.
Sep 29, 2021
Double-digit tackles
Al-Shaair recorded 10 tackles in Sunday's Week 3 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair has been a mainstay among the 49ers' linebacker corps through three games this season. He has played on 95 and 100 percent of the defensive plays respectively in the team's last two games and now has 22 tackles across three contests on the campaign. Al-Shaair has yet to record a sack, though he did break up two passes in Week 1 against Detroit.
Sep 9, 2021
Shakes off injury
Al-Shaair (knee) wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair has shaken off the knee sprain he sustained early in training camp. The 24-year-old should handle a consistent role in the 49ers' defense as the team's starting strong-side linebacker. Through 16 games (five starts) in 2020, he registered 35 tackles (22 solo), two pass breakups and an interception.
Aug 3, 2021
Managing knee sprain
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Al-Shaair suffered "some type of knee sprain" and is expected to be sidelined a few weeks, nick reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair sustained the injury at Monday's practice, and it appears he's avoided a serious injury. He'll likely miss the preseason opening, but there's a chance he's available for the second preseason contest Aug. 22 versus the Chargers if he avoids any setbacks.
Aug 2, 2021
Injures knee at practice
Al-Shaair suffered an apparent knee injury at Monday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kyle Shanahan said that team doctors are optimistic about Al-Shaair's health, which could bode well for his timetable to return. If he's able to get healthy without missing much time, Al-Shaair may be able to secure a starting role alongside Dre Greenlaw and Fred Warner.
Feb 24, 2021
35 tackles as backup
Al-Shaair finished the 2020 season with 35 tackles (22 solo), an interception and a fumble forced across 16 games.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair spent the majority of the year as a backup and special teams contributor, only topping 58 percent of defensive snaps once in Week 17 when he made a spot start. The third-year pro is a well-rounded linebacker who could reach IDP relevance if given an opportunity to start. That said, Al-Shaair is a restricted free agent who is well-liked by the organization, so returning as a backup to Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw is a strong possibility for 2021.
Nov 29, 2020
Will face Rams
Al-Shaair is active for Sunday's matchup against the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair's activation bolsters San Franciso's linebacking corps, and his services may be needed on the defensive side with Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (hamstring) being ruled out at the weakside linebacker spot. Joe Walker is in line to step into the starting spot at that position, but Al-Shaair could be in line for increased playing time.
Feb 25, 2020
Secured backup role
Al-Shaair recorded 18 tackles (11 solo) over 15 games during the 2019 regular season.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was picked up by San Francisco after a serious knee injury caused him to go undrafted out of Florida Atlantic. The 22-year-old cracked the 53-man roster out of camp, and showed enough to the coaching staff to stick around for the entire campaign. Al-Shaair is under contract for two more years, so he will compete for a backup role behind projected starters Kwon Alexander, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.
Nov 22, 2019
Ready for Week 12
Al-Shaair (concussion) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Packers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair was able to fully clear the concussion protocol this week, limiting his absence to one game. The 22-year-old has played a minor defensive role for the 49ers with seven tackles in nine games, and that doesn't seem likely to change this week.
Aug 29, 2019
Tallies two tackles
Al-Shaair (knee) had two tackles (one solo) in Saturday's preseason game at Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Al-Shaair suffered a torn ACL in October that helped lead to him going undrafted, but he's played in all three preseason contests for the 49ers. The 22-year-old would serve as a reserve linebacker if he survives this weekend's roster cutdown.
