Back to practice squad
Akers reverted to the Vikings' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction report.
ANALYSIS
Akers played just one offensive snap during the Vikings' 21-17 win over the Browns on Sunday, but he made the most of that opportunity by throwing a 32-yard pass to Josh Oliver on a trick play, where the sixth-year running back was used as a wildcat quarterback. Akers has already been elevated to Minnesota's active roster three times, which is the maximum allowed for a season. He would have to be signed to the active roster in order to play for the Vikings for the rest of the season, which could happen with Aaron Jones (hamstring) on injured reserve.

Throws TD pass
Akers threw a 32-yard touchdown pass on his only snap on offense while being used as a wildcat quarterback in Sunday's win over Cleveland in London.
ANALYSIS
Akers threw a perfect pass to Josh Oliver on a trick play. Akers was a successful high school quarterback and threw several halfback passes in college. Aside from the trick play, Akers had little role on offense as he served as the team's No. 3 running back for the third straight week behind Jordan Mason and Zavier Scott, with Aaron Jones (hamstring) still on injured reserve.
Oct 4, 2025
Elevated to active roster
The Vikings elevated Akers from their practice squad Saturday ahead of Sunday's game versus the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Akers will serve as the team's No. 3 running back for the third straight week behind Jordan Mason and Zavier Scott with Aaron Jones (hamstring) still on injured reserve. This is the final time Minnesota will be able to elevate Akers, and the team will have to sign him to the active roster in order for him to appear in another game.

Reverts to practice squad
Akers reverted to Minnesota's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Akers was elevated ahead of Sunday's Week 4 loss to the Steelers in Dublin, Ireland. The veteran running back didn't log any offensive snaps in that contest, though he did play three snaps on special teams. With Aaron Jones (hamstring) on IR, Akers could get another gameday elevation this coming Sunday in Cleveland, though he seems to be a distant third on the Vikings' RB depth chart behind Jordan Mason and Zavier Scott.
Sep 29, 2025
Limited to special teams
Akers played just three snaps, all on special teams, in Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh in Dublin.
ANALYSIS
Akers was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster the day before the game to serve as the No. 3 running back. Last week Akers got five carries just days after he was signed as a free agent which suggested he could perhaps challenge Zavier Scott for the backup running back role while Aaron Jones (hamstring) is sidelined. However, Scott played 29 snaps on offense and had two carries and six receptions (one for a touchdown) in Dublin, showing he's clearly ahead of Akers on the depth chart.
Sep 27, 2025
Up from practice squad
The Vikings elevated Akers from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Steelers in Dublin, Ireland.
ANALYSIS
With Aaron Jones (hamstring) on injured reserve, Akers made his season debut last Sunday against the Bengals as a practice-squad elevation, ranking third in snap share (12 percent) behind Jordan Mason (60 percent) and Zavier Scott (28 percent). All of Akers' five carries (for 19 yards) occurred in garbage time during the 48-10 win, so if the Week 4 matchup with Pittsburgh is a close one, he may not see the field outside of giving Mason and Scott a breather, barring injuries.

Reverts to practice squad
Akers reverted to the Vikings' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Akers played 11 snaps (seven on offense, four on special teams) during the Vikings' 48-10 win over the Bengals on Sunday. He finished with five carries for 19 yards and failed to log in his lone target, but all of that work came in garbage time as he worked behind Jordan Mason and Zavier Scott. With Aaron Jones (hamstring) and Ty Chandler (knee) both on injured reserve, Akers is a top candidate to be elevated to the active roster for the Vikings' Week 4 clash against the Steelers on Sunday at Crone Park in Dublin, Ireland.
Sep 22, 2025
Gets five carries in blowout win
Akers had five carries for 19 yards a did not have a reception on his only target in Sunday's win over the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Akers was elevated to the active roster just five days after he was signed as a free agent. Zavier Scott got more work as Jordan Mason's backup with Aaron Jones (hamstring) sidelined and Akers only got his action (seven snaps on offense) late in the fourth quarter. However, Akers getting snaps, even in a blowout, so quickly after he was signed shows he could be in the mix to be the primary backup as early as Week 4 against Pittsburgh.
Sep 20, 2025
Jumps up from practice squad
The Vikings elevated Akers from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Akers presumably will be a part of the Vikings' plans in the backfield without the services of Aaron Jones (hamstring), who will be on injured reserve for at least the next four contests. Jordan Mason is expected to lead the way for Minnesota, but Akers' experience in coach Kevin O'Connell's system suggests he's likely to see at least some touches in his season debut, especially because his only competition for those reps is undrafted rookie Zavier Scott. In 12 games for the Vikings last season, Akers notched 64 carries for 297 yards (4.6 YPC) and one touchdown and 10 catches (on 11 targets) for 52 yards and two more TDs.

Joins Minnesota's practice squad
Akers agreed to a contract with the Vikings' practice squad Tuesday, Ben Goessling of The Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Akers will begin his third stint in the Vikings organization as a member of the practice squad, he could be elevated to the 53-man roster for Sunday's game versus the Bengals with Aaron Jones (hamstring) looking unlikely to play Week 3. Akers was most recently with the Saints during the preseason, but he was unable to win a roster spot after New Orleans opted to enter the regular season with Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller and Devin Neal as its backfield options. In 2024, Akers saw action in 17 games between stops with the Texans and Vikings during the regular season, carrying 104 times for 444 yards (4.3 YPC) and two touchdowns while adding 14 receptions for 68 yards and three more scores.
Aug 25, 2025
Can't stick with Saints
New Orleans cut Akers on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers was a solid contributor in 2024, rushing 104 times for 444 yards (4.3 YPC) and two scores across 17 regular-season games split between the Vikings and Texans. He also demonstrated impressive red-zone versatility, securing 14 of 18 targets for 68 yards and three additional touchdowns. The veteran running back couldn't carve out a spot on the Saints' 53-man roster behind Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller and Devin Neal, but he figures to draw interest around the league from teams in need of reliable backfield depth.
Aug 10, 2025
Third RB to see touches Sunday
Akers had four carries for nine yards and was not targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 27-13 preseason loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Quarterback Spencer Rattler wound up leading the Saints in rushing with just 22 yards Sunday, highlighting how poorly the entire backfield performed against the Chargers. It is worth noting that Akers was the third back to touch the ball after spot-starter Kendre Miller and Velus Jones. The 26-year-old Akers will have to show the coaching staff more in the Saints' final two exhibition contests if he wants to earn a spot on the 53-man roster this upcoming season.
Jun 13, 2025
Gets chance with Saints
The Saints signed Akers to a contract Friday, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
In his fifth NFL campaign in 2024, Akers split time between the Texans and Vikings, recording 104 carries for 444 yards (4.3 YPC) and two touchdowns and 14 catches (on 18 targets) for 68 yards and three more TDs. He entered the offseason as an unrestricted free agent and went without much interest until New Orleans' mandatory minicamp this week, when he worked out for the team. Akers showed enough to earn another opportunity, but he joins a crowded backfield behind No. 1 option Alvin Kamara along with Kendre Miller and rookie sixth-rounder Devin Neal.
Jun 9, 2025
Working out with New Orleans
Akers will attend the Saints' minicamp practices as a tryout in the upcoming week, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers split the 2024 season between the Vikings and Texans, accounting for 104 total carries. He hasn't received much known interest this offseason, though the Saints have a relatively undefined depth chart behind Alvin Kamara. Kendre Miller was a third-round pick in 2023 but hasn't established himself, while Devin Neal was just a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Jan 19, 2025
Productive in backup role
Akers had five carries for 39 yards in Minnesota's Wild Card-round loss to the Rams. He finished the season with 104 carries for 444 yards rushing, 14 receptions for 68 yards and five total touchdowns.
ANALYSIS
Akers played the first five games of the season with Houston (amassing 147 yards rushing) and was traded to the Vikings where he initially was third string. He soon overtook Ty Chandler as the backup to Aaron Jones and had a productive second half of the season. Akers showed some big-play ability with 232 yards rushing , 48 yards receiving and three touchdowns in his last eight games. He becomes an unrestricted free agent after the season, but the Vikings would seem likely to want to bring him back considering they've traded for him in consecutive seasons.
Jan 13, 2025
Suiting up Monday
Akers (illness) is listed as active for Monday's wild-card game against the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Akers wasn't able to practice Saturday due to an illness, which left him questionable for the Vikings' playoff opener. Despite the ailment, he'll be able to suit up Monday and serve as the primary backup to starting RB Aaron Jones, which has amounted to 6.2 touches for 29.1 yards from scrimmage per game and three total TDs in 12 appearances for Minnesota this season.
Jan 11, 2025
Trending toward playing
Akers, who is listed as questionable for Monday's wild-card contest against the Rams with an illness, is expected to play, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It appears as if there's a bug going around in the Vikings backfield as Ty Chandler didn't practice Friday due to an illness. In any case, Akers is likely going to reprise his role as the backup to Aaron Jones (quadriceps) in the playoff matchup Monday night. Expect official confirmation to occur ahead of the 8:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
Jan 8, 2025
Efficient in loss to Detroit
Akers rushed six times for 65 yards during Sunday's 31-9 loss to the Lions. He also secured both of his targets for four yards.
ANALYSIS
Akers played his usual No. 2 backfield role behind Aaron Jones on the road at Detroit, a game in which he logged his first breakaway run of 40-plus yards on the season. Across 12 regular-season games with Minnesota, he has logged 64 carries for 297 yards (4.6 YPC) and one touchdown, while securing 10 of 11 targets for 52 yards and two scores. He also appeared in five games with the Texans. Akers will continue working as Jones' backup during Monday's wild-card round matchup against the Rams.
Jan 1, 2025
Hits pay dirt in win
Akers rushed six times for 18 yards and caught two of three targets for 15 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-25 win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Akers' touchdown was his third receiving score of the season and fifth total trip to the end zone this season. The veteran running back saw an increase in playing time Sunday, as teammate Aaron Jones (quad) was pulled out of the game out of caution and missed the entire fourth quarter. Akers may be thrown into a starting role in Week 18 if Jones is unable to suit up, but it appears Jones has a realistic chance to play in the season finale, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Next up for the Vikings is a matchup with the Lions to decide the NFC North and the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
Dec 24, 2024
Just one carry in win
Akers had one carry for three yards in Sunday's win at Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Akers played on just seven of the offense's 66 snaps as Minnesota stuck with Aaron Jones (54 snaps) more than usual with him playing well. Akers should get more touches the final two games to keep Jones fresh.
Dec 18, 2024
Scores TD in win
Akers had 10 carries for 24 yards, including a one-yard touchdown, in Monday's win over Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Akers got significant work behind Aaron Jones, playing on 21 of the offense's 77 snaps. Jones had 18 carries and two receptions while playing 47 snaps. Akers should continue to get about a third of the snaps to keep Jones fresh.
Dec 9, 2024
Has 37 yards rushing in win
Akers had five carries for 37 yards in Sunday's win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Akers played on 19 of the offense's 60 snaps. Aaron Jones had 15 touches and played on 38 snaps. Jones shook off his recent fumble issues and got the bulk of the workload, but Akers remains a factor to give him rest.
Dec 4, 2024
Gets just four touches in win
Akers had four carries for 22 yards in Sunday's win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Akers played on 16 of the offense's 53 snaps while Ty Chandler played on five snaps. Starting running back Aaron Jones played on 28 snaps but fumbled on twice on eight touches. Akers could split more of the workload if Jones' fumbles are viewed as due to fatigue.
Nov 24, 2024
Falls back to four touches Sunday
Akers totaled three carries for 19 yards and one catch (on one target) for six yards during Sunday's 30-27 win at Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Akers has been a part of the Vikings offense in four consecutive contests, but his touch count Sunday was a fewest during that stretch after earning 14 in Week 10 at Jacksonville and 12 last Sunday in Tennessee. The elevated usage for Akers in the previous two games may have been spurred by the rib injury that Aaron Jones suffered in the first of those outings, but the latter racked up 25 touches for 129 yards from scrimmage and a rushing TD in Week 12, indicating he's more or less back to his status as Minnesota's unquestioned top RB. As a result, Akers could be relegated to a distant No. 2 option behind Jones moving forward.
Nov 17, 2024
Another 12 touches in Week 11
Akers tallied 10 carries for 25 yards and two catches (on two targets) for 11 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 23-13 victory in Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
Akers now has back-to-back games with double-digit touches, but his yardage tallies in those outings have left fantasy managers wanting (14 for 47 yards from scrimmage Week 10 at Jacksonville, 12 for 36 total yards Week 11). On a positive note, he scored his first TD since Week 5 as a member of the Texans from three yards out late in the third quarter. The Vikings' lead runner Aaron Jones didn't fare much better (16 touches for 43 total yards), which may stem from the rib issue that he sustained against the Jaguars last weekend. In any case, Akers appears as if he's carved out a regular role in Minnesota's offense, at least in the short term.
Nov 11, 2024
Gets 13 carries in win
Akers has 13 carries for 38 yards and one reception for nine yards in Sunday's win at Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
Akers played on 26 of the offense's 84 snaps as he got extra playing time late in the game when Aaron Jones missed time with sore ribs. It sounds like Jones won't miss time with the injury, but he could be limited or the Vikings may want to play it safe with his usage this week at Tennessee. Akers could be set for more work as a result.
Nov 4, 2024
Moves into backup RB role
Akers had six carries for 46 yards and two receptions for seven yards in Sunday's win over the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Akers played on 16 of the offense's 73 snaps as he essentially got two series in place of starter Aaron Jones, the latter of whom had 21 carries for 64 yards and four receptions for 18 yards. Ty Chandler didn't play any snaps on offense as it looks like Akers has overtaken him to be the primary backup running back. It appears Akers will be the running back who gets some work each game to try to keep Jones fresh.
Oct 20, 2024
Working as No. 3 RB
Akers is active against Detroit in his first game since being acquired from Houston, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, Myles Gaskin is a healthy inactive for Sunday's game. Akers will work as the No. 3 running back, but he may not get on the field with Aaron Jones (hamstring) set to play. Ty Chandler will work as Jones' backup.
Oct 15, 2024
Traded to Minnesota
Akers has been traded to the Vikings along with a 2026 conditional seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2026 conditional sixth-round pick, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
This marks the second straight season Minnesota has traded for Akers. The running back was unable to take advantage of Joe Mixon's absence in the backfield in Houston for three consecutive weeks, totaling 115 yards and one touchdown on 31 carries between Weeks 3 and 5. With Mixon's return, and a crowded depth chart, Akers was expendable for Houston. As a result, he will return to the Vikings, where he played six games and logged 138 yards and one touchdown on 38 carries across six games in the 2023 campaign. He will presumably compete with Myles Gaskin for a depth role behind Aaron Jones (hip) and Ty Chandler.
Oct 14, 2024
Loses playing time Week 6
Akers had two carries for minus-1 yards in Sunday's 41-21 win over the Patriots in Week 6.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Akers' role was significantly impacted by the returns of Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce. Akers was on the field for just two snaps during Houston's final possession. He should considered as the fourth running back behind Mixon, Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale, who played 18 snaps Sunday.
Oct 12, 2024
Reduced role expected Week 6
Akers could see a drop in touches and snaps in Sunday's game against New England, as Dameon Pierce (hamstring) carries no injury designation and Joe Mixon (ankle) is listed as questionable on the Texans' injury report.
ANALYSIS
Pierce's status indicates he could take over as the lead back, a role that Akers filled the last four weeks. The questionable tag for Mixon, the club's No. 1 back, represents an improvement after being ruled out the last four weeks. The potential return for both backs, which should suggests marginal role for Akers, could actually make him inactive. That was his status in Week 1, the lone game in which both Mixon and Pierce suited up.
Oct 10, 2024
May lose lead back role Week 6
Akers may not be the Texans' lead back Week 6 against the Patriots, if the report from Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston that Dameon Pierce (hamstring) is expected to play holds up over the next few days.
ANALYSIS
Pierce, who has been sidelined the last four games, practiced Wednesday in a limited fashion, but head coach DeMeco Ryans was optimistic about the running back's chances to play Sunday. "He's done a great job with his rehab process and he's back out working, so we're expecting to have him ready to go for the game," Ryans said. Akers and Dare Ogunbowale have shared the backfield snaps while both Pierce and Joe Mixon (ankle) were unavailable the last four weeks. Akers has posted modest numbers during that stretch, including a rushing touchdown, a receiving score and several red-zone touches.
Oct 6, 2024
Scores TD while splitting touches
Akers rushed nine times for 42 yards and a touchdown while catching two of three targets for five yards in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Dare Ogunbowale got the first five touches among Bills running backs, but Akers made the most of his first two opportunities once he checked in, breaking off an 11-yard run immediately followed by a 15-yard touchdown run. Neither Texans running back found much running room after that point, and while Akers finished as the team's leading rusher, he had only 11 touches to Ogunbowale's 21. If the Texans get Joe Mixon (ankle) or Dameon Pierce (hamstring) back against the Patriots in Week 6, Akers and Ogunbowale would likely both see reductions in usage.
Oct 6, 2024
On track for added work Sunday
With Joe Mixon (ankle) and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) inactive, Akers is in line to continue to see an expanded role in Houston's backfield Sunday against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
While Mixon and Pierce remain sidelined, Akers appears poised to make his third straight start, with Dare Ogunbowale on hand to see change-of-pace work and both J.J. Taylor and British Brooks available to provide the Texans with Week 5 backfield depth. In the team's 24-20 win over the Jaguars last weekend, Akers carried 13 times for 53 yards and was not targeted in the passing game, while Taylor logged six carries for 18 yards and Ogunbowale rushed twice for seven yards and caught all four of his targets for 47 yards and a TD.
Oct 4, 2024
May have more competition Sunday
Akers may be see Dameon Pierce (hamstring) added back to the Texans backfield Sunday against the Bills, as the latter is questionable to play in the contest, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
While Joe Mixon (ankle) will miss a third game in a row this weekend, Pierce put himself in a position to return for the first time since Week 1 after logging a limited practice Friday. If Pierce is active Sunday, he won't necessarily take on a large workload, considering Akers has been preparing for a third consecutive start, per Wilson. However, in such a scenario, Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale would be on hand for any RB reps that don't go to Akers. In Weeks 3 and 4, Akers combined for 22 carries for 74 yards and caught one of three targets for an eight-yard touchdown.
Oct 4, 2024
Trending toward lead role Week 5
Akers is preparing to be the lead back Week 5 against the Bills, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers is poised to be the No. 1 back for a third consecutive game, as both Joe Mixon (ankle) and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) were non-participants. Akers, Dare Ogunbowale and J.J. Taylor were full participants, per Wilson. Akers has 106 yards on 29 carries (3.7 ypc) and caught two of four targets for 11 yards and a touchdown. That includes two red-zone carries and one target inside the 20, on which he scored.
Sep 29, 2024
Modest numbers in win
Akers carried the ball 13 times for 53 yards in Sunday's 24-20 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
The veteran running back made his second straight start with both Joe Mixon (ankle), and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) unavailable, and Akers was a little more effective on the ground than he was last week. The receiving TD he used to salvage his Week 3 performance went to Dare Ogunbowale this time around, however. Akers' role and volume in Week 5 against the Bills will be dependent on the health of the two RBs ahead of him on the Houston depth chart.
Sep 22, 2024
Gets into end zone in loss
Akers carried the ball nine times for 21 yards and caught one of three targets for an eight-yard touchdown in Sunday's 34-7 loss to the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
The game got away from the Texans early, and Akers was bottled up when Houston tried to get its ground attack going. The running back did haul in a third-quarter TD from C.J. Stroud however, his first score of the season. Akers' lead role Sunday was the result of an ankle injury to Joe Mixon, and if Mixon is able to return in Week 4 against the Jaguars, Akers' touch volume will almost certainly decline.
Sep 22, 2024
Set to see added work Sunday
Akers is expected to take on an expanded workload Sunday against the Vikings with Joe Mixon (ankle) and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) both inactive.
ANALYSIS
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network relays that Akers is in line to get the starting nod Sunday, with Dare Ogunbowale, British Brooks and J.J. Taylor available as depth options behind him. Akers was inactive for Week 1 while completing his recovery from a torn Achilles' tendon but was productive in a backup role behind Mixon in the Week 2 win over the Bears, carrying seven times for 32 yards while reeling in his lone target for a three-yard gain.
Sep 20, 2024
Preparing to start against Vikings
Akers is preparing to start Sunday's game against the Vikings, as Joe Mixon (ankle) is listed as doubtful and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) has been ruled out, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers got seven carries in Week 2 against the Bears, as Mixon spent part of the game in the locker room tending to his ankle injury and Pierce didn't play. The former Rams and Vikings running back rushed for 32 yards on those seven carries but also lost a fumble by the goal line. Akers should get first crack at the lead role Sunday against one of his former teams barring the unlikely event of Mixon suiting up after all, but if ball security issues arise again, Dare Ogunbowale or British Brooks could get more opportunities at Akers' expense.
Sep 19, 2024
Could be headed for Week 3 start
Akers took first-team snaps at practices Wednesday and Thursday while Joe Mixon (ankle) and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) sitting out both sessions, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
A healthy inactive Week 1 despite completing his recovery from the torn left Achilles' tendon he suffered last November without any setbacks, Akers could suddenly find himself in a leading role out of the backfield for a potent Houston offense two weeks later. As Wilson notes, the ankle injury that Mixon suffered in the second half of last Sunday's win over the Bears isn't regarded as a long-term concern, but the back-to-back absences at practice make it increasingly likely that he'll be sidelined for this weekend's game versus the Vikings. Wilson adds that Pierce is also close to a return after sitting out the Week 2 contest, but he appears to be trending toward missing another game this weekend. While serving as the No. 2 back behind Mixon in Week 2, Akers was productive with seven carries for 32 yards and one catch for three yards, though he lost a red-zone fumble in the win. If Mixon and Pierce are both sidelined Sunday in Minnesota, Akers should operate as Houston's lead ballcarrier, but he could cede so
Sep 16, 2024
Loses key fumble with Mixon hurt
Akers rushed seven times for 32 yards, caught his lone target for three yards and lost a fumble in Sunday's 19-13 win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Akers got some extra opportunities as Joe Mixon spent part of the second half in the locker room due to an ankle injury and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) didn't dress. The former Rams and Vikings running back didn't make a good first impression in his Texans debut, as Akers fumbled on Chicago's 4-yard line when Houston was on the verge of putting the game away in the fourth quarter. Mixon and Pierce are likely to work ahead of Akers on early downs when healthy, while Dare Ogunbowale has a role in passing situations, but Akers could be thrust into a larger role in Week 3 against the Vikings if neither Mixon nor Pierce are able to play.
Sep 15, 2024
Active versus Chicago
Akers is active for Sunday night's game against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
After being a healthy scratch in Week 1 against the Colts, Akers is in uniform versus Chicago, with Dameon Pierce (hamstring) inactive. He'll be in the mix -- along with Dare Ogunbowale and British Brooks -- for complementary snaps behind top back Joe Mixon.
Sep 8, 2024
Not suiting up
Akers (coach's decision) is inactive Week 1 against the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Akers was given steady carries throughout the preseason, but looking back, that likely wasn't a great sign for his playing time prospects. The Texans will move forward in Week 1 with Joe Mixon as the presumed starter, and Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale available in a backup capacity. Even undrafted rookie free agent British Brooks made it to the active roster, although that's most likely due to work on special teams.
Aug 24, 2024
Leading rusher Saturday
Akers took seven carries for 53 yards and caught three of four targets for 19 yards in Saturday's preseason finale against the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Akers was first player to record a touch in Saturday's exhibition, as the veteran tries to latch onto the Texans' 53-man roster ahead of the Sept. 27 deadline. The 2020 second-round pick was brought in for depth after starter Joe Mixon suffered an injury this preseason. The latter has since healed and was a healthy scratch Saturday, leaving any potential fantasy value for Akers in Houston in the rearview mirror.
Aug 10, 2024
Forty-one yards from scrimmage
Akers carried six times for 17 yards and caught all three targets for 24 yards in Friday's 20-12 preseason win over the Steelers. He also returned one kickoff for 23 yards.
ANALYSIS
Akers followed up an effective Hall of Fame Game and continues to belie no ill effects of the knee injury that wiped out the second half of the 2023 season. The Texans added him to the roster when they learned Joe Mixon (quadriceps) was dealing with an injury. All of Akers' 15 offensive snaps came during the second half.
Aug 1, 2024
Looks effective in HOF Game
Akers rushed five times for 13 yards and brought in both targets for 18 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' 21-17 preseason loss to the Bears on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Aaron Rodgers' lightning-fast recovery from his Week 1 Achilles tear last season rightfully garnered plenty of attention, but Akers has now recovered from an Achilles tear on each leg in well under a year himself. His return to the field Thursday night came just under nine months from when he suffered his most recent injury in Week 9 of last season while with the Vikings. Akers had already been practicing with the Texans since signing July 21, and although his rushing line doesn't reflect it, the 2020 second-round pick looked decisive and explosive when attacking the line of scrimmage. Akers also made his modest opportunities through the air count, crossing the goal line on a four-yard reception just before halftime. Akers is presumably battling the likes of Dare Ogunbowale, rookie sixth-round pick Jawhar Jordan and J.J. Taylor for the No. 3 running back job in Houston, and Thursday's performance was an encouraging start to his quest.
Jul 21, 2024
Signs with Texans
Akers (Achilles) and the Texans agreed on a contract Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers worked out for Houston on Sunday and the team must've seen enough from the running back, inking him to a contract ahead of their training camp beginning Tuesday. The 25-year-old suffered the second Achilles tear of his career in November and it's unclear how close he is to being ready for full contact at practice.

Works out with Houston
The Texans hosted Akers (Achilles) for a workout Sunday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers tore his Achilles for the second time in his career last November and finished the season on IR. Prior to the injury, the veteran tallied 167 rushing yards and a touchdown on 60 carries and added 70 receiving yards on 11 receptions over seven games between the Rams and Vikings. Houston is looking to add running-back depth behind starter Joe Mixon and backup Dameon Pierce, among others.

Not tendered by Vikings
Akers (Achilles) wasn't tendered by the Vikings, making him an unrestricted free agent, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers suffered the second Achilles tear of his career in November, so he could miss most or all of the 2024 season. Once healthy enough to resume his NFL career, the 2020 second-round draft pick of the Rams will be free to sign with any team that shows interest.
Nov 8, 2023
Officially moved to IR
The Vikings placed Akers (Achilles) on injured reserve Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Akers is done for the 2023 season due to a torn left Achilles' tendon suffered during Sunday's win over the Falcons, the second such injury of his NFL career. Previously, Akers was forced to miss most of the 2021 season after rupturing his right Achilles' tendon, but he's now dealing with an issue on the left side. Akers impressed in his brief time with Minnesota, rushing 38 times for 138 yards and a touchdown while securing 11 of 12 targets for 70 yards in six appearances with the team. Now that he's facing a second injury of career-threatening severity, though, there's no guarantee that Akers gets a chance to sign as a free agent in the 2024 offseason, whether with the Vikings or another club.
Nov 6, 2023
MRI confirms torn Achilles
Head coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday that Akers underwent an MRI that confirmed he tore his left Achilles' tendon, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers showed some promise during his six appearances with the Vikings, rushing 38 times for 138 yards and a touchdown while securing 11 of 12 targets for 70 yards. However, his season will be cut short due to the injury he sustained Sunday against Atlanta. Akers is slated to become a free agent during the offseason but drew praise from O'Connell, so it's possible the Vikings try to bring him back in 2024. Alexander Mattison should continue to serve as Minnesota's lead back moving forward, while Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu could also see increased snaps out of the backfield.
Nov 5, 2023
Achilles' injury feared
Coach Kevin O'Connell relayed after Sunday's 31-28 win over the Falcons that the Vikings believe Akers has an Achilles' injury, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers' injury was initially deemed an ankle issue, but it looks like the running back's Achilles is what's ailing him in the wake of Sunday's contest. If the injury is confirmed, it would be the second time in his career that Akers has hurt his Achilles. If he's forced to miss time, Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu would remain on hand to work behind Alexander Mattison in the Vikings' backfield.

Injures ankle Sunday
Akers was forced out of Sunday's game against the Falcons with an ankle injury.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his exit from Sunday's contest, Akers had carried eight times for 25 yards and caught three passes for 13 yards. In his absence, fellow RB Ty Chandler is available to work behind Alexander Mattison.
Oct 29, 2023
Scores first Minnesota TD
Akers carried the ball nine times for 19 yards and a touchdown and caught his only target for six yards in Sunday's 24-10 win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
While he didn't gain much real estate and saw seven fewer touches than Alex Mattison, Akers' six-yard TD run in the first quarter was the biggest play either running back made in the game. Both backs could be in line for much more significant roles in the second half of the season, as Kirk Cousins left Sunday's contest with what could be a season-ending Achilles injury. Akers and the running game could be focus of the offense if rookie QB Jalen Hall is under center in Week 9 against the Falcons.
Oct 23, 2023
Workload boost in Week 7 win
Akers rushed 10 times for 31 yards and brought in two of three targets for 30 yards in the Vikings' 22-17 win over the 49ers on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
One game after logging just two touches over nine snaps, Akers' involvement shot up to the highest it's been since his arrival in Minnesota. Akers receiving yardage total was also a season-best figure and allowed him to outgain Alexander Mattison by a 61-42 margin in total yards on the night. The productive performance seemingly sets Akers up for another solid allotment of touches in a favorable matchup on the road against the Packers in Week 8.
Oct 16, 2023
Plays just nine snaps
Akers had one carry for eight yards and one reception for seven yards on his lone target in Sunday's win at Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Akers played just nine snaps on offense, which is lower than his previous two games with the Vikings. Alexander Mattison played on 43 snaps and had 18 carries for 44 yards. It was a little surprising Akers didn't get more opportunities with Mattison struggling with a 2.4 YPC. Akers could challenge for more playing time but the Vikings continue to use Mattison as the primary back even with underwhelming results.
Oct 9, 2023
Gets seven touches in loss
Akers had five carries for 15 yards and two receptions for three yard on two targets in Sunday's loss to Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Akers' share of the backfield work increased slightly in his second game with the Vikings, but Alexander Mattison remained the primary running back. Akers played on 21 of the offense's 73 snaps while Mattison played on 37 snaps. Mattison had eight carries and two receptions. Akers will likely remain in a simlar role unless Mattison stumbles.
Oct 2, 2023
51 total yards in Vikings debut
Akers had five carries for 40 yards and two receptions for 11 yards on two targets in Sunday's win at Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Akers served as the backup to starter Alexander Mattison as Ty Chandler didn't play any snaps on offense. Akers took over as the lead back on one series and played on 14 of the offense's 48 snaps, while Mattison played 33 snaps. Mattison had more touches (17 carries and one target) and was efficient with 95 rushing yards and a 5.6 YPC. It looks like Akers will have a smaller backup role in the near term if Mattison remains effective as the primary back. However, Akers showed enough of a spark to press for a larger role.
Oct 1, 2023
Active against Carolina
Akers is active for Sunday's game at Carolina, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Vikings acquired Akers before Week 3 and made him a healthy inactive for the loss to the Chargers. Head coach Kevin O'Connell said that he still views Alexander Mattison as the team's lead back, something that's unlikely to change in the immediate future after Mattison rebounded from a rough start to the season with 25 touches for 125 yards this past Sunday. Akers should move to the backup role, but how many snaps or touches he'll get in the offense is uncertain, especially with Ty Chandler also active against the Panthers as well.
Sep 27, 2023
Expected to play Week 4
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Wednesday that he plans to have Akers active for Sunday's game in Carolina, Matthew Coller of Purple Insider reports.
ANALYSIS
The Vikings acquired Akers last Wednesday and made him a healthy scratch for Sunday's loss to the Chargers. O'Connell said last week that he still views Alexander Mattison as the lead back -- something that's unlikely to change in the immediate future after Mattison rebounded from a rough start to the season with 25 touches for 125 yards this past Sunday. A benching down the road is still possible, of course, and if nothing else Akers will face soft competition for backup touches with Ty Chandler being the only other RB currently on the roster.
Sep 24, 2023
Not playing Week 3
Akers (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell suggested Friday that Akers wouldn't dress this weekend, so the running back's inactive status comes as no surprise. Minnesota wants to give Akers -- who was acquired from the Rams on Wednesday -- to have more time to get acclimated to his new organization, so he'll turn his sights toward making his NFL debut Oct. 1 at Carolina after getting in a full week of practice. Akers will likely be ticketed for a depth role initially, but he could emerge as the Vikings' lead back if Alexander Mattison's early-season struggles continue.
Sep 22, 2023
Unlikely to play Sunday
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Friday that Akers isn't expected to suit up Sunday against the Chargers, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Given that he was dealt from L.A. to Minnesota on Wednesday and passed a physical Thursday, Akers didn't have much time to get up to speed with his new squad, despite his previous experience working with O'Connell on the Rams in 2020 and 2021. Akers thus will set his sights on making his Vikings debut Sunday, Oct. 1 at Carolina. In the meantime, Alexander Mattison and Ty Chandler will lead Minnesota's backfield.
Sep 21, 2023
Passes physical Thursday
Akers passed a physical Thursday, completing the trade made between the Vikings and Rams on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Akers will be present at Thursday's practice, giving him two chances to get some on-field work with his new team ahead of Sunday's game against the Chargers. It remains to be seen how much Akers may be utilized out of Vikings backfield this weekend, assuming he's active. If he does suit up, he'll likely play second fiddle to Alexander Mattison off the bat as he vies with Ty Chandler for secondary RB reps. Still, Akers' experience working with coach Kevin O'Connell in 2020 and 2021 in L.A. should serve him well in his transition to Minnesota.
Sep 21, 2023
Could play Sunday
Akers is likely to be available to play at least some snaps in Sunday's game against the Chargers given his familiarity with Minnesota's offense, which is modeled after the Rams' scheme, offensive coordinator Wes Phillips told ESPN.
ANALYSIS
Akers was traded to Minnesota along with a conditional seventh-round 2026 draft pick from the Rams on Wednesday for a conditional sixth-round 2026 draft pick. While Akers may play this week, it's hard to see him having much of a role given he'll have been with his new team just a few days. However, it seems likely he'll quickly move ahead of Ty Chandler to No. 2 on the depth chart given Chandler has been little used (just seven touches in two games). It's also not hard to envision Akers soon moving into a time share with starter Alexander Mattison given his struggles (a lost fumble in Week 2 and just 62 yards rushing on 19 carries for a paltry 3.3 YPC). However, Akers still has much to prove after his own underwhelming performance this season (29 yards rushing on 22 attempts in Week 1).
Sep 20, 2023
Moving to Minnesota
The Rams traded Akers to the Vikings on Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Pelissero noted that the deal involves a swap of late-round draft picks in 2026. Akers fell out of favor in the Rams backfield after just one game this season, following up an ugly 22-carry, 29-yard effort Week 1 by going on the inactive list Week 2. Upon joining the Vikings, it may take some time for Akers to fit into a running back rotation with Alexander Mattison -- the clear top option -- and Ty Chandler. Akers will at least have prior experience with head coach Kevin O'Connell working in his favor, as O'Connell was the Rams' offensive coordinator during Akers' first two seasons in the NFL. Akers' first chance to suit up with his new squad arrives Sunday against the Chargers, though he may hold only a limited role if he's active for the contest.
Sep 19, 2023
Coach confirms trade talks
Head coach Sean McVay confirmed Monday that the Rams are "headed" toward trading Akers, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Leading up to Akers being a healthy inactive for the Rams' Week 2 loss to the 49ers, multiple reports had already indicated that the fourth-year running back was headed for the trade block while Los Angeles prepared to install second-year player Kyren Williams as its new lead back. McVay backed up those reports Monday, noting that general manager Les Snead had already spoken with "a handful of teams" about acquiring Akers. Until a trade is executed, Akers will likely continue to remain inactive, but look for the Rams to work quickly to find a new home for the 24-year-old in order to maintain roster flexibility. Since tearing his Achilles' tendon in July 2021, Akers has largely struggled to return to peak form, aside from a three-game stretch late in the 2022 season in which he cleared 100 rushing yards in each contest.
Sep 18, 2023
Rams engaging in trade talks
The Rams have already engaged in trade talks involving Akers, who was a healthy scratch for Sunday's 30-23 loss to the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers' spot on Los Angeles' roster once again seems up in the air, a situation somewhat reminiscent of his having demanded a trade early during the 2022 season. Interestingly, Rapoport reports that no significant issues have arisen between Akers and his team this season. Akers closed out the 2022 campaign with three straight 100-plus-yard rushing games, so it's possible he could draw trade interest from a team in need of backfield help. Meanwhile, Kyren Williams scored twice while operating as the Rams' starting running back versus San Francisco, while compiling 100 scrimmage yards.
Sep 17, 2023
Inactive for Sunday's game
Akers is inactive for Sunday's game against the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic relays via Jay Glazer of Fox that the Rams are reportedly attempting to trade Akers, who is a healthy scratch Sunday. With Akers not in the team's backfield mix versus San Francisco on Sunday and possibly beyond, Kyren Williams figures to lead the Los Angeles backfield in Week 2, with Ronnie Rivers and Royce Freeman also candidates to mix in.
Sep 17, 2023
Set to be healthy inactive
Akers is expected to be inactive for the Rams for Sunday's game against the 49ers and could be on the trade block, Jay Glazer reported Sunday on "Fox NFL Sunday."
ANALYSIS
Akers drew the start in the Rams' Week 1 win over the Seahawks, but he gained just 29 yards on 22 carries. Despite Akers' poor efficiency, the Rams' decision to drop him down the depth chart comes as a surprise after he finished the 2022 season with three straight 100-plus-yard rushing games. Kyren Williams will step up into a bigger role as a result of Akers losing hold of the starting role.
Sep 10, 2023
TD saves inefficient day
Akers rushed 22 times for 29 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 30-13 win over Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Akers was having trouble passing the line of scrimmage Sunday, posting an abysmal mark of 1.3 YPC. A late touchdown from the 24-year-old saved this from being a horrendous fantasy performance. Kyren Williams (15-52-2) clearly outperformed Akers out of the gates, while also receiving two targets to the latter's none. Akers' fantasy managers can only hang their hats on the sheer volume Akers received Sunday, but the Rams are unlikely to run the ball 40 times every week. It will be interesting to see which Rams' tailback gets more run against the 49ers in Week 2 after Sunday's results.
Jun 16, 2023
Having a strong offseason
Akers, per coach Sean McVay, is "going to be a central figure in this offense," Cameron DaSilva of TheRamsWire reports.
ANALYSIS
The end of the 2022 season saw the former second-round pick finally flash some of his tantalizing potential, with back-to-back-to-back 100-yard rushing games, three touchdowns and an impressive 5.47 YPC in the Rams' final three contests. Akers has been putting in the work in the offseason with new running backs coach Ron Gould to protect what turned into a three-down role as the lead back, and while coach Sean McVay also complimented Kyren Williams on his progress this offseason, McVay noted that Akers is "going to be a huge part of what we're doing moving forward." Between McVay's comments and Akers' performance down the stretch last year, it seems much more likely that the Rams will utilize the fourth-year veteran as the primary ball carrier rather than lumping him into the mostly ineffective RBBC that the team used for the first half of last season.
Jan 8, 2023
Ends on three-game 100-yard streak
Akers rushed 21 times for 104 yards and caught all three of his targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 19-16 overtime loss to Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Akers had a falling out with the Rams earlier in the season, but he and the team got back on the same page as the 2020 second-round pick finished the campaign with three consecutive 100-yard performances on the ground. Akers rushed 188 times for 786 yards and seven touchdowns overall, and he could open the 2023 season as the Rams' lead back.
Jan 1, 2023
Eclipses century mark in loss
Akers rushed 19 times for 123 yards and brought in one of two targets for 10 yards in the Rams' 31-10 loss to the Chargers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Akers saw backfield mate Malcolm Brown vulture the Rams' only touchdown, but he otherwise continued a highly encouraging stretch of play that's boosting his fantasy stock for 2023. The third-year back now has back-to-back 100-yard performances for the first time in his career, and although his passing game involvement took a slight hit after multi-reception efforts in Weeks 15 and 16, Akers still delivered nicely for fantasy managers riding his late-season surge. The 2020 second-round pick will have a solid opportunity to head into the offseason with some momentum against the Seahawks' inconsistent run defense on the road in Week 18.
Dec 25, 2022
Goes off for three scores
Akers rushed 23 times for 118 yards and three touchdowns while catching both of his targets for 29 yards in Sunday's 51-14 win over Denver.
ANALYSIS
Akers appeared to be in the holiday spirit after gifting his fantasy managers three scores on Christmas Day. This was easily the 23-year-old's best performance of his career, which is especially impressive considering it came against one of the league's top defenses. Akers started the year in head coach Sean McVay's doghouse, but he has come on strong in recent weeks to rescue a Rams rushing attack that was on life support. The 2020 second-round pick is averaging 71.3 rushing yards with six total touchdowns in four games since taking over as the team's lead back. Akers can safely be viewed as an RB2 heading into a matchup against the Chargers on Jan. 1.
Dec 19, 2022
Finishes with 90 total yards Monday
Akers rushed 12 times for 65 yards and brought in all three targets for 35 yards in the Rams' 24-12 loss to the Packers on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Akers was about the only bright spot for the Rams' mostly moribund offense, with the third-year back making an impact from his team's very first play. Akers ripped off a 15-yard gain on that initial carry, and he was also responsible for 23 total yards on Los Angeles' third possession, which culminated in the team's first points of the game, a 33-yard Matt Gay field goal. Akers ultimately finished with team highs in both rushing and receiving yards in a game where he saw multiple targets for only the second time all season, and he'll head into a Week 16 home matchup against the Broncos on Christmas Day with a trio of tallies of at least 60 rushing yards in the last five contests.
Dec 8, 2022
Finds end zone again in win
Akers rushed 12 times for 42 yards and a touchdown while bringing in his only target for one yard in the Rams' 17-16 win over the Raiders on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Akers once again served as the clear-cut lead back over rookie backfield mate Kyren Williams, but he ultimately logged a fairly modest workload overall. Nevertheless, the third-year back crossed the goal line for the third time in the last two games on a one-yard touchdown run with 3:19 remaining, a score that proved critical in the comeback. While the Rams' injury-hampered offensive line isn't likely to open up many running lanes for Akers, he at least appears to have a secure role going into a Week 15 road matchup versus the Packers on Monday night, Dec. 19.
Dec 4, 2022
Scores two TDs against Seattle
Akers carried the ball 17 times for 60 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 27-23 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
He also caught his only target for zero yards. Rookie Kyren Williams appeared to be on the verge of taking over the lead role in the Rams' backfield last week, but Akers roared back Sunday with a one-yard TD plunge in the first quarter and a six-yard score with just under three minutes left in the fourth that seemed like it might give his team a 23-20 win, before Geno Smith answered back for Seattle. The Los Angeles offense has a limited ceiling with Matthew Stafford (neck), Cooper Kupp (ankle) and Allen Robinson (foot) all on IR and potentially done for the season, but Akers could still have some fantasy value in Week 14 against the Raiders if he continues to fend off Williams.
Dec 2, 2022
Overcomes illness
Akers (illness) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against Seattle, Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers was a full practice participant Friday after missing the previous two days. He and Kyren Williams figure to continue splitting work in the backfield, though it's possible the rookie's share continues to grow with the Rams out of the playoff hunt and perhaps not viewing Akers as part of their future beyond 2022. For now, he should get some carries, but within the context of an injury-riddled offense full of backup linemen and now led by backup quarterback John Wolford.
Dec 1, 2022
Still not practicing
Akers (illness) was a non-participant at Thursday's practice, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers has yet to mix into drills during Week 13 prep as he contends with an illness. His status at Friday's session thus will be something to watch for, as another DNP could put him in danger of sitting out Sunday against the Seahawks. If he's able to suit up this weekend, Akers likely would be the Rams' No. 2 running back after he handled a 30 percent share of snaps to Kyren Williams' 70 percent this past Sunday at Kansas City.
Nov 30, 2022
Comes down with illness
Akers was held out of Wednesday's practice due to an illness, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
In the wake of the Rams waiving Darrell Henderson last week, Akers ended up playing second fiddle to rookie Kyren Williams out of the team's backfield during this past Sunday's loss at Kansas City. While Akers' snap share (30 percent) paled in comparison to Williams' (70 percent), the former had more rushing yards (37-35) while the latter notched more touches (14-8) and yards from scrimmage (60-37). Akers now is beginning Week 13 prep with an absence, so his status will be one to monitor in advance of Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
Nov 27, 2022
Little volume in loss
Akers carried the ball eight times for 37 yards in Sunday's 26-10 loss to Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
While he led the Rams' running backs in rushing yards, quarterback Bryce Perkins out-gained Akers on the ground and rookie Kyren Williams wound up with more scrimmage yards. With the Los Angeles offense in complete disarray, neither RB figures to have much fantasy appeal in Week 13 against the Seahawks -- even against a defense that just coughed up over 300 combined yards to Josh Jacobs.
Nov 23, 2022
Likely taking over as lead-back
Akers appears set to take over as the top option for the Rams' backfield after the team waived Darrell Henderson on Tuesday, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
The shocking release of Henderson, who was the leading rusher for the Rams in 2022 with a paltry 283 yards, leaves Akers and rookie Kyren Williams as the only two running backs on the roster. Akers has averaged a fairly miserable 3.1 yards per rushing attempt on the season, but tied a season high with 61 rushing yards on 14 attempts during Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Saints. With Henderson set to be a free agent at season's end, the Rams may have chosen to see what they have in the two backs that will still be on the roster next season, with Williams now likely serving as a third-down specialist while Akers takes hold of lead-back duties. The Rams new-look running back room faces a tough task in Week 12, with a Chiefs squad that has been allowing just 100.6 rushing yards per game on deck.
Nov 20, 2022
Productive with lead-back role
Akers rushed 14 times for 61 yards in the Rams' 27-20 loss to the Saints on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Akers enjoyed the rare opportunity of breaking away from the Rams' typically confounding running back committee and made good use of the opportunity by tying his season high in rushing yardage. The third-year back has shown more efficiency than usual over the last two games with a combined 20-83 line on the ground in that span, and Sunday's performance could well have earned him another chance with the top role in a Week 12 road matchup against the Chiefs.
Nov 13, 2022
Stuck in committee
Akers carried the ball six times for 22 yards and failed to catch his only target during Sunday's 27-17 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
The 22 yards actually wound up leading the Rams, as the team's backfield featured a three-way split of the workload between Akers, Darrell Henderson (seven touches) and Kyren Williams (four touches). Working in a sputtering offense behind an injury-ravaged offensive line, it will be almost impossible for any of the backs in this committee to make a fantasy impact in Week 11 against the Saints.
Nov 7, 2022
Ineffective in return
Akers rushed five times for two yards in Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Akers came into his first game since Week 5 averaging just 3.0 yards-per-carry, and despite being against a subpar rush defense, the struggling third-year back actually managed to lower his year-to-date YPC and only managed to take the field for 11 offensive snaps. Darrell Henderson maintained his lead back status with a respectable 56 yards rushing, including a 23-yard scamper, and Malcolm Brown was also effective with his limited touches. Akers status on the team has been a wellspring of controversy in recent weeks, and Sunday's dismal performance will lead to more questions than answers before the Cardinals come to town in Week 10.
Nov 6, 2022
Returns to action Sunday
Akers (personal) is listed as active Sunday at Tampa Bay, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Making his first appearance since Week 5, Akers will put an end to a two-game absence after he and the Rams seemingly resolved their differences during preparations for Week 9. His role in the offense is far from known, though, as all of Darrell Henderson, Malcolm Brown and practice squad call-up Ronnie Rivers also are available to L.A.'s backfield. Akers will be looking to improve upon his yards-per-carry mark of 3.0, which is possible against the Buccaneers' 24th-ranked run defense (132.4 yards per game).
Nov 6, 2022
Likely to be active Sunday
Akers (personal) will be active for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers has been away from the team since Week 6, missing the Rams' last two games. After returning to practice Thursday, it appears he will be active Sunday, though his status will become official shortly before the team's 4:25 ET kickoff. If he suits up, Akers' workload has yet to be determined and is likely to be dependent on the flow of the game, per Schefter.
Nov 4, 2022
Chance to play Sunday
Coach Sean McVay said Friday that "there's a possibility" Akers (personal) will play Sunday at Tampa Bay, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers hasn't suited up for a game since Week 5, missing the Rams' last two outings due to personal reasons. And he only rejoined his teammates at practice Thursday, so the lack of game preparation could be a determining factor in McVay's decision. The team also can activate rookie fifth-rounder Kyren Williams (ankle) from IR for Week 9 action. which leaves the overall state of the backfield in question. Perhaps the only certainties are Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown, while Ronnie Rivers is a candidate to be elevated from the practice squad.
Nov 3, 2022
Puts in full practice Thursday
Akers (personal) practiced fully Thursday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The saga surrounding Akers appears to be drawing to a close after he returned to the team and managed to handle every practice rep Thursday. Wednesday's chat between Akers, his agent David Mulugheta and Rams coach Sean McVay seems to have bridged the gap between the two sides after the running back missed the last two games due to "personal reasons" and was the subject of trade rumors before Tuesday's deadline. Now that Akers has rejoined his teammates on the field, it remains to be seen what kind of role he can expect Sunday at Tampa Bay, assuming he's active. At the moment, Akers, Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown are the backfield options on L.A.'s active roster, while Ronnie Rivers is a prime candidate to be elevated from the practice squad this weekend.
Nov 3, 2022
Takes part in team walk-through
Akers (personal) participated in Thursday's team walk-through session, Steve Wyche of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rams will release their second Week 9 practice report later Thursday, and if Akers is listed as full participant or removed from the report entirely, it would be an indication that he's on track to play Sunday in Tampa Bay after a two-game, three-week hiatus from the team. Though the Rams weren't able to find a trade partner for Akers ahead of Tuesday's deadline, both player and team seem to have at least temporarily mended their relationship. Prior to leaving the team, Akers had seen his role reduced in favor of Darrell Henderson, as he played fewer than 40 percent of the Rams' snaps on offense in Weeks 4 and 5. Given that he's averaging just 3.0 yards per carry this season and isn't much of an asset as a pass catcher, Akers may occupy a small role in the Rams' running-back rotation if he's active this Sunday.
Nov 3, 2022
Returning to practice
Akers (personal) will return to practice Thursday, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers remains on the Rams' roster with the trade deadline having passed, and Thursday's return to practice could be a sign that his relationship with the team is beginning to bend. Coach Sean McVay had positive things to say Wednesday about recent dialogues with Akers, though he also mentioned waiving the running back and giving him a fresh start as a possibility. It remains to be seen whether Akers will contribute again for Los Angeles this season, though McVay could offer more information during his scheduled media session Friday.

Talking with team
Rams coach Sean McVay said Wednesday that he's "very encouraged with the dialogue" he's had with Akers (personal) and agent David Mulugheta, Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire reports.
ANALYSIS
McVay suggested Akers still wants to be part of the Rams, despite a number of recent signal suggesting otherwise. Player and team reportedly are still discussing options after Akers wasn't dealt at the trade deadline, potentially leaving the door open for the running back to contribute gain this season. McVay did say waiving Akers is a possibility, however.

May not return to L.A. after all
Akers (personal) is "hoping for a fair resolution" to his tenure with the Rams and prefers not to suit up for the team again in 2022 after he wasn't traded ahead of Tuesday's deadline, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Akers is due a manageable $1.45 million for the final year of his rookie deal in 2023, the third-year back's middling production since he returned from a torn Achilles' tendon in Week 18 of last season likely limited the interest of potential suitors ahead of the deadline. While Anderson relays that Akers' relationship with the Rams remains amicable since he stepped away from the team during Week 6 prep, the 23-year-old apparently believes he's best served moving on from the organization entirely rather than rejoining the team in a backup capacity. It's unclear if the Rams will concede to Akers' wishes, but if Akers is released, L.A. would proceed with Darrell Henderson, Ronnie Rivers, Malcolm Brown and Kyren Williams (ankle) as its options out of the backfield.

Could play for Rams again
Akers (personal), who is out for Sunday's game against San Francisco, would be expected to play for the Rams again this season if he is not dealt prior to Tuesday's trade deadline, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Los Angeles would prefer to find a trade partner for Akers, Schefter reports, but if that doesn't materialize the team would expect the 2020 second-round pick to contribute this season. Akers, who didn't practice with the team this week and is set to miss a second straight contest for personal reason, may have to get back in the good graces of the Rams' coaching staff if he isn't traded, though both sides still appear to prefer that route. Darrell Henderson, Malcolm Brown and Ronnie Rivers will helm Los Angeles' backfield versus the 49ers on Sunday.
Oct 28, 2022
Not playing this week
Akers (personal) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against San Francisco, Stu Jackson of the Rams' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a formality after Sean McVay said earlier this week that Akers wouldn't practice with the team. The 2020 second-round pick could be traded in the coming days, as he doesn't seem to be on good terms with the Rams. Darrell Henderson (illness) and Malcolm Brown are the running backs on the active roster, with Kyren Williams (knee) potentially coming back from injured reserve as soon as Week 9.
Oct 26, 2022
Not practicing with team
Akers (personal) won't practice with the Rams this week, Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
This all but rules Akers out for Sunday's game against the 49ers -- an outcome Sean McVay hinted at earlier in the week. Darrell Henderson is expected to work as the Rams' lead back, with Malcolm Brown in reserve and Kyren Williams (ankle) nearing a return from IR. Akers, meanwhile, remains a candidate to be traded.
Oct 25, 2022
Unlikely to suit up Week 8
Coach Sean McVay said Monday that Akers (personal) is not likely to be active for Sunday's game against the 49ers, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
McVay also said that the Rams have spoken to teams about Akers, who was inactive Week 6 versus the Panthers, with the NFL trade deadline one week away. It's worth noting that McVay wouldn't rule out keeping Akers in Los Angeles, saying it's "definitely still an option," but DaSilva notes that it 'it seems highly likely' the two sides eventually part ways. DaSilva also mentions that the Jaguars traded James Robinson to the Jets as recently as Monday, only receiving a conditional sixth-round pick in exchange, so it remains to be seen how much of a return the Rams will be able to negotiate out of suitors for Akers.
Oct 17, 2022
Return to team not out of question
Coach Sean McVay said the Rams haven't ruled out the possibility of Akers (personal) returning to the team, though McVay acknowledged that the team's preferred path forward would be trading the running back, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers sat out Week 6 against the Panthers with the Rams trying to find the running back "a fresh new start with another team" in McVay's words. "I will say a lot of these types of discussions go on and nothing comes to fruition," McVay added, and if such a scenario unfolds with Akers' trade discussions, the Rams haven't ruled out attempting to reintegrate him into the offense.
Oct 16, 2022
Time in L.A. may be over
Akers (personal), who is listed as out for Sunday's game against the Panthers, may have played his last down in Los Angeles, as the Rams are expected to field trade offers on the running back, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers was absent from practices Thursday and Friday before being ruled out for the Week 6 game, and Rapoport relays that the 23-year-old's decision to step away from the team stemmed from philosophical and football-related differences with head coach Sean McVay. Sources tell Rapoport that the relationship between player and coach has remained cordial, so the possibility exists that Akers may be able to put aside his differences with the Rams and resume playing for the team if a trade suitor can't be found. The belief is that Akers will draw significant trade interest, however, despite his struggles to regain explosiveness as a ballcarrier since he suffered a torn Achilles' tendon in July 2021. At least for Week 6 and likely beyond, Darrell Henderson is expected to serve as the Rams' clear top running back, with Malcolm Brown and Ronnie Rivers providing depth behind him.
Oct 14, 2022
Not playing Week 6
Rams head coach Sean McVay said that Akers is dealing with a personal matter and won't play Sunday against the Panthers, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers was previously absent from Thursday's practice due to a personal matter, and McVay indicated that the running back wouldn't be in attendance for Friday's session either. The coach wouldn't go into specifics about Akers' situation, and declined to speculate on when the 23-year-old might rejoin the team, merely noting that Akers is "working through some things." Akers' absence for at least the Rams' Week 6 contest should free up more work for Darrell Henderson, who had already cleared 50 percent of snaps in each of the Rams' first five games but has served mainly as a change-of-pace/pass-catching option the past three weeks. Henderson should be in store for more early down work sans Akers, though reserve back Malcolm Brown is still likely be involved on offense in some capacity.
Oct 9, 2022
Corralled by Cowboys
Akers carried the ball 13 times for 33 yards and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 22-10 loss to the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
The modest rushing total actually led the Rams, and if there was a silver lining for Akers it was that he was the only running back on the team to get a carry on the afternoon, and all of Darrell Henderson's touches came as a receiver. Akers hasn't exactly locked up the No. 1 job in the backfield, but he could be poised for a breakout in Week 6 against a Panthers defense that just got gashed for 199 scrimmage yards and three TDs by the 49ers duo of Jeff Wilson and Tevin Coleman.
Oct 3, 2022
Bottled up on MNF
Akers rushed eight times for 13 yards and didn't catch his only target in Monday's 24-9 loss to San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
Akers got one more rushing attempt than Darrell Henderson, but Henderson mustered 14 more yards on the ground in addition to catching three passes for 12 yards. While Akers has more upside as a rusher than Henderson, a Rams offense that's averaging just 17.5 PPG through four weeks is struggling to create positive game scripts, and doing so won't be easy in Week 5 against a Cowboys defense that has limited each of its first four opponents to less than 20 points.
Sep 25, 2022
Finds end zone in Week 3 win
Akers carried the ball 12 times for 61 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 20-12 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
After taking a back seat to Darrell Henderson in the Rams' opener and splitting the workload fairly evenly in Week 2, Akers appeared to be the team's clear lead back in this one, as Henderson managed only 17 yards on four carries. Akers looked impressive on a 14-yard TD run late in the third quarter for Los Angeles' final points, but he then coughed up a fumble at the goal line in the fourth quarter. That turnover could open the door for Henderson to get more involved again in Week 4 against the 49ers.
Sep 18, 2022
Regains share of backfield
Akers carried the ball 15 times for 44 yards in Sunday's 31-27 win over Atlanta. He added two receptions on three targets for 18 yards.
ANALYSIS
After earning only three rushing attempts in Week 1, Akers led the Rams' backfield with 15 carries in Week 2. He wasn't particularly efficient, as his longest rush of the day went for only 10 yards, and he gained one or fewer yards on five of his attempts. It remains to be seen how the Rams' backfield will be split moving forward, but Akers appears to have a significant role to play in it.
Sep 9, 2022
Works behind Henderson in Week 1
Coach Sean McVay said he wants to see "an increased level of urgency and accountability snap in and snap out" from Akers, who got only three carries off the bench in a 31-10 loss to the Bills on Thursday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Darrell Henderson not only got the start but played 82 percent of offensive snaps, taking 13 carries for 47 yards and five catches for 26 yards. It wasn't efficient production, but Henderson took advantage of the rare gaps he saw behind a struggling offensive line, while Akers managed no gain from his three carries on 12 snaps (18 percent). McVay did say Akers did some positive things, and a Week 2 home game against Atlanta provides a better matchup for both backs to get involved. Even so, fantasy managers that drafted Akers as a starter need to be thinking about alternatives now that they've seen Henderson operating as the lead back.
Sep 9, 2022
No production in Week 1 loss
Akers rushed three times for no gain and was not targeted in the passing game during the Rams' 31-10 loss to the Bills on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Akers was surprisingly 10 carries behind backfield mate Darrell Henderson's final tally, and his lack of involvement altogether in the passing game was also alarming. The 2020 second-round pick was thought to have the leg up on Henderson in terms of their backfield split coming into the season; consequently, how much the workload distribution is altered in a Week 2 home matchup against the Falcons a week from Sunday will be the subject of considerable fantasy scrutiny.
Aug 29, 2022
Returns to full practice
Akers (undisclosed) practiced fully Monday, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to Darrell Henderson (undisclosed), which sets the stage for the Rams' top two backs to be available for Week 1 action against the Bills. At that time, Akers is line to lead the team's ground game out of the gate this coming season, with Henderson in line to see his share of complementary/change-of-pace touches, while Kyren Williams and Jake Funk are on hand in reserve.
Aug 27, 2022
Still in recovery mode
Coach Sean McVay relayed after Saturday's preseason game at Cincinnati that Akers (undisclosed) hasn't reached the point where he can do a full-speed workout, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
At the same time, McVay said fellow running back Darrell Henderson (undisclosed) fit in such a workout Saturday, indicating he's drawing closer to a return to practice. The Rams have less than two weeks remaining before a Week 1 matchup with the Bills on Thursday, Sept. 8, so the sooner Akers and Henderson mix into drills, the better for their prospects to play. Behind that RB duo, Kyren Williams and Jake Funk are the next players up in L.A.'s backfield.
Aug 15, 2022
No timetable for return to practice
Coach Sean McVay acknowledged Monday that he doesn't have a timeline for when Akers and Darrell Henderson -- who are both dealing with soft tissue injuries -- can return to practice, noting "it could be anywhere between two days, one day, a week," Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though McVay's estimate for how long the Rams might be without their top two backs isn't specific, it does sound like neither player's issue is viewed as long term, with the team simply preferring to play it safe at this stage of the preseason. While Akers and/or Henderson are sidelined, added practice reps will be available for Kyren Williams and Jake Funk.
Aug 15, 2022
Set to miss practice time
Coach Sean McVay relayed that Akers is dealing with a "soft tissue" injury and is slated to miss some practice time, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to fellow running back Darrell Henderson, with McVay noting that neither will practice until they can work at "full speed" in team drills. With the team's top two backfield options unavailable for the time being, Kyren Williams and Jake Funk saw added practice reps Monday, per Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic and they figure to do so until Akers and/or Henderson rejoin the mix.
Aug 2, 2022
Looking better after full offseason
Coach Sean McVay recently said Akers has been "getting more comfortable" and "caught up to speed" after dealing with an Achilles tear last year, ESPN's Sarah Barshop reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers surprisingly made it back for the playoffs after tearing his Achilles in mid-July, but he didn't look like the same player that ran for 221 yards and two TDs in two playoff games the previous year. The strong finish to his rookie season had Akers going in the second round of fantasy drafts before his injury last summer, and he still has potential to justify that price (or higher) if he can handle a three-down role in McVay's offense. On the other hand, he'll lose a lot of work to Darrell Henderson and/or other backs if he looks like he did in January and February.
Apr 21, 2022
Continuing to progress
Akers is aiming to make "big strides" this offseason after making a quicker than expected recovery from a torn Achilles suffered last July, Greg Beacham of the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite picking up the serious injury just before training camp, Akers was given a chance to return at some point during the 2021 campaign when the Rams opted to place him on the reserve/non-football injury list on Aug. 31 versus injured reserve, the latter of which would have made him ineligible to play. He eventually was activated prior to Week 16 and made his season debut Week 18, and during the Rams' run to a Super Bowl LVI victory he served as the team's primary running back. In those five games, though, Akers averaged just 2.4 yards on his 72 carries, corralled 11 of 13 passes for 86 yards and didn't score a touchdown. During Thursday's media appearance, he relayed, "I wouldn't say I did well. ... I did what I was supposed to do, but obviously that's not enough for me." As he puts the injury further in the rearview mirror, the soon-to-be 23-year-old (in June) will look to fulfill his standing as a 2020 second-round pick, with his primary competition Darrell Henderson, a three-year pro.
Feb 13, 2022
Stifled in Super Bowl win
Akers rushed 13 times for 21 yards and brought in three of four targets for 14 yards during the Rams' 23-20 win over the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Akers comfortably paced the backfield in carries even with Darrell Henderson making his return from injured reserve, but as was the case most of the postseason, he found running room very much at a premium. The second-year back nearly outpaced his rushing yardage total through the air on just three touches, underscoring the tough sledding he encountered on the ground. Naturally, the Super Bowl win for his team is the ultimate consolation, and Akers could also certainly be heartened by the fact he made a very rapid recovery from the Achilles tear he suffered in July. With a full offseason to get back to full strength ahead of him, the FSU product will undoubtedly aim for a major comeback effort in the Rams' 2022 title-defense season.
Feb 10, 2022
Puts in full practice Thursday
Akers (shoulder) practiced fully Thursday, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After not practicing at all last week, Akers has ramped up his activity level in short order this week, going from limited at Wednesday's walkthrough to all drills one day later. As a result, the Rams have their top two running backs -- also, Sony Michel -- ready for a Super Bowl LVI matchup with the Bengals. The question mark that remains in Los Angeles' backfield is the status of Darrell Henderson (knee), whose window to return from injured reserve is about to close. Fortunately, coach Sean McVay expressed optimism earlier this week that Henderson has a "good chance" to be available Sunday, per Stu Jackson of the team's official site. In the end, though, Akers should get the larger share of touches among the trio, with Michel and potentially Henderson mixing in behind him.
Feb 9, 2022
Limited Wednesday
Akers (shoulder) was a limited participant at Wednesday's walkthrough, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers didn't practice at all during the first week of prep for Super Bowl LVI, so Wednesday's development displays a degree of progress from the shoulder injury that he suffered during the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 30. In three playoff games (including two starts) during the Rams' current run, he's averaged 2.8 yards on 54 carries and hauled in five of six targets for 62 yards. During that same stretch, fellow running back Sony Michel has averaged 3.3 yards on 24 rushes while combining for minus-8 yards on three catches. Akers' progress in L.A.'s final two sessions of the week likely will determine whether he enters the weekend with a designation for Sunday's contest against the Bengals.
Feb 4, 2022
Misses third straight practice
Akers (shoulder) appears to be absent from a third straight practice Friday, but Rams coach Sean McVay suggested he expects the running back to play in the Super Bowl against Cincinnati, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
While the Rams list eight players on their injury report this week, McVay suggested only one guy -- TE Tyler Higbee (knee) -- is in serious danger of missing the big game. It'll be cause for concern if Akers continues to miss practice next week, though it sounds like the Rams expect him to return. There is some chance of a reduced role compared to the past few weeks, as Akers hasn't had much luck running the ball, and Darrell Henderson (knee) could come back from IR for the Super Bowl (he was suited up for practice Friday, per Rodrigue).
Feb 3, 2022
No activity Thursday
Akers (shoulder) didn't participate in Thursday's walkthrough, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers has yet to practice this week since sustaining a shoulder injury during the Rams' win in the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers, but he also has more than a week to get healthy ahead of a Super Bowl matchup with the Bengals. He played through the issue this past Sunday, turning 14 touches into 50 yards from scrimmage. Meanwhile, fellow running back Sony Michel couldn't find much traction to the tune of 12 total yards on 11 touches. Akers will have four more chances to mix into drills before L.A. next takes the field on Sunday, Feb. 13.
Feb 2, 2022
Listed as DNP on Wednesday
Akers (shoulder) was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers missed a spell in the first half of the Rams' recent win in the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers due to a shoulder injury, resulting in his second-lowest share of offensive snaps (39 percent) since returning from a July Achilles tear back in Week 18. Still, he was far more efficient than backfield mate Sony Michel, taking 14 touches for 50 yards from scrimmage versus the latter's 11 touches for 12 total yards on 57 percent of those plays. The Rams likely are easing Akers into preparation for a Super Bowl matchup with the Bengals on Sunday, Feb. 13, but his status will be one to monitor to make sure L.A.'s top RB is set to play in the season finale.
Jan 30, 2022
Mostly held in check
Akers rushed 13 times for 48 yards and brought in his only target for two yards during the Rams' 20-17 win over the 49ers in their NFC Championship Game matchup on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Akers navigated a shoulder injury that led to a brief exit from the contest in the first half, and although his final yardage total was nothing to write home about, he was more efficient than during a difficult divisional-round performance against the Buccaneers. The second-year back fumbled twice in that game and was also held to 2.0 yards per carry, while Sunday's performance saw him at least average a slightly more palatable 3.7 per tote and not turn the ball over. Akers did outpace Sony Michel by only three carries, but that was partly the byproduct of the former's aforementioned temporary in-game absence. Given Akers is arguably the more explosive and higher-upside option of the two, it's likely he maintains a lead-back role in the Super Bowl LVI matchup versus the Bengals on Feb. 13.
Jan 30, 2022
Returns to Championship Game
Akers (shoulder) has returned to Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the 49ers, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers hurt his shoulder in the first half but gained clearance to return prior to halftime. He'll return to a leading role in the Los Angeles backfield.
Jan 30, 2022
Hurts shoulder in NFCCG
Akers (shoulder) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against San Francisco, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers went to the locker room to have the injury examined after rushing six times for 31 yards and adding a two-yard catch in the NFC Championship Game. Sony Michel will take over as the Rams' leading backfield option in Akers' absence.
Jan 23, 2022
Struggles mightily in playoff start
Akers ran 24 times for 48 yards and caught all three targets for 20 yards Sunday. He lost two fumbles in an eventual 30-27 win over the Bucs.
ANALYSIS
Akers was finally given the keys to the Rams' backfield, but the end results were not what many were expecting. The Buccaneers do boast one of the premier rush defenses in the league -- spearheaded by dominant nose tackle Vita Vea -- so that should be factored into the rough go of things under a national spotlight. Sony Michel finished with just one carry for four yards, so it appears that Sean McVay believed Akers to be the superior option to use in this particular matchup. The 49ers' rush defense is no slouch either, but Akers figures to find a bit of relief in next week's matchup after posting a total dud.
Jan 18, 2022
Approaches 100 scrimmage yards
Akers rushed 17 times for 55 yards in Monday night's 34-11 wild-card round win over the Cardinals. He also caught one of two targets for 40 yards.
ANALYSIS
Akers entered the game behind Sony Michel but went on to lead the Rams in carries, adding some elusiveness to Michel's power-based style. Although he wasn't particularly efficient with his rushes overall, Akers made a big play in the passing game, hauling in a trick-play throw from wideout Odell Beckham during the second half. With nearly 20 touches and 100 scrimmage yards in just his second game back from an Achilles injury, Akers' importance is growing ahead of Sunday's NFC divisional-round matchup versus the Buccaneers.
Jan 9, 2022
Sees eight touches in 2021 debut
Akers (Achilles) rushed five times for three yards and caught all three targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 27-24 overtime loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Akers made his 2021 debut in Week 18 after missing practically the entirety of the regular season with an Achilles injury. The 21-year-old was eased back into action with just eight total touches while Sony Michel (21-43-0) retained his lead back role. Akers is more versatile of an asset and provides more upside than the current veteran starter, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Akers carve out a larger role -- assuming good health -- in what is sure to be a showdown between the Rams and Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs.
Jan 9, 2022
Officially active Week 18
Akers (Achilles) is active for Sunday's game against the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old was activated from injured reserve Dec. 25 and was inactive for the past two games, but he'll make his season debut after recovering from the Achilles injury in July. Sony Michel is expected to lead the Rams' backfield again Sunday, and Akers is set to be eased in before potentially taking on a larger workload in the playoffs.
Jan 9, 2022
Small role expected in debut
Akers (Achilles) is in line to make his season debut Sunday against the 49ers, though he's expected to handle only a limited role, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rams activated Akers from injured reserve Dec. 25, but he's been inactive for both of the past two contests after being listed as questionable in advance of both games. After another week of full practices, however, Akers entered the regular-season finale without a designation, putting him on track to make his season debut following his recovery from the torn Achilles' tendon he suffered in mid-July. Though Akers finished his rookie campaign as the Rams' lead back, he's expected to be eased back into the mix as the top change-of-pace option behind Sony Michel, who is averaging 4.6 yards per carry since stepping into the top role Week 13. Akers' opportunities are expected to increase during the Rams' upcoming playoff run, though if Michel continues to shine as a ballcarrier, Akers may end up seeing most of his snaps on passing downs.
Jan 5, 2022
Logs another full practice
Akers (Achilles) practiced in full Wednesday, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
In the lead up to this past Sunday's game at Baltimore, Akers also was uninhibited in practice before the Rams deemed him inactive. But coach Sean McVay has laid the groundwork for Akers to return to action Week 18 following a far quicker than anticipated recovery from a mid-July Achilles tear. On Monday, McVay told J.B. Long of the Los Angeles Rams Radio Network, "I think he's ready." McVay went even further Wednesday, telling Stu Jackson of the team's official site that Akers participated in the jog-through session and "was full speed, flying around. ... He'll be ready to go (Sunday against the 49ers)." What kind of workload Akers handles remains to be seen, but assuming he's active he'll be spelling Sony Michel, who has averaged 23.4 touches per game over the last five contests.
Jan 3, 2022
Likely to return in Week 18
Coach Sean McVay relayed Monday that he expects Akers (Achilles) to make his season debut Sunday against the 49ers, J.B. Long of the Los Angeles Rams Radio Network reports. "I think you let him go," McVay said. "I think he's ready."
ANALYSIS
Since the Rams activated Akers from the reserve/non-football injury list on Dec. 25, he's been ramping up for his first game action since suffering a torn Achilles in mid-July. He was inactive for back-to-back contests while doing so, but McVay now appears comfortable getting Akers back in the mix. How much work Akers may be able to handle remains to be seen, especially with Sony Michel coming off a fifth consecutive outing with at least 79 yards from scrimmage. More than likely, Akers will handle a complementary role Week 18 and into the playoffs, assuming he's available to L.A.'s offense.
Jan 2, 2022
Officially out Week 17
Akers (Achilles) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Ravens, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Even though Akers was listed as questionable despite being a full participant in practices Wednesday through Friday, head coach Sean McVay made it clear heading into the weekend that the running back wasn't in line to make his season debut. Since being restored to the 53-man roster Dec. 25, Akers has now been inactive for two straight games, but he hasn't experienced any reported setbacks in his recovery from the surgery he underwent in July to address a torn Achilles' tendon. McVay indicated that Akers will likely be cleared to play in the Jan. 9 regular-season finale versus the 49ers, though the 22-year-old may not fill a major role behind lead back Sony Michel.
Jan 2, 2022
Will not play Sunday
Akers (Achilles), who is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Ravens, will not play, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
This isn't surprising as head coach Sean McVay said Friday that the running back is unlikely to make his season debut. The Rams intend to take a cautious approach with the 2020 second-round pick as he works his way back from an Achilles tear suffered in mid-July. Akers has been practicing for just over a week now and hasn't experienced any setbacks, but the Rams aren't likely to give him his first snaps of the season until the Jan. 9 regular-season finale versus the 49ers.
Dec 31, 2021
Questionable, but unlikely to play
Akers (Achilles) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Ravens, though head coach Sean McVay said earlier Friday that the running back is unlikely to make his season debut, Kevin Modesti of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
With Darrell Henderson (knee) moving to injured reserve earlier this week, the Rams are left with Akers, Jake Funk and Buddy Howell as the lone backup options on the 53-man roster behind lead back Sony Michel. Akers could eventually challenge Michel for that role, but any changing of the guard is unlikely to come until the postseason or 2022, as the Rams intend to take a cautious approach with the 2020 second-round pick as he works his way back from an Achilles tear suffered in mid-July. Akers has been practicing for just over a week now and hasn't experienced any setbacks, but the Rams aren't likely to give him his first snaps of the season until the Jan. 9 regular-season finale versus the 49ers.
Dec 31, 2021
Looks unlikely to play Week 17
Head coach Sean McVay said Friday that Akers (Achilles) isn't likely to play in Sunday's game against the Ravens, Stu Jackson of the Rams' official site reports. "I think next week looks like a more realistic goal, like we've had with him all along," McVay said.
ANALYSIS
The Rams may not give Akers an official injury designation for Week 17 since he hasn't appeared on either of their first two practice reports, but the 22-year-old nonetheless looks like he may be available only in an emergency Sunday while he works back from the torn Achilles' tendon he suffered in mid-July. Akers has made remarkable progress in his recovery thus far and hasn't suffered any reported setbacks since being restored to the 53-man roster Dec. 25, but the Rams may not be counting on him to be a contributor until Week 18 against the 49ers. Even if Akers is free of restrictions in that contest, he'll likely be playing second fiddle to Sony Michel, who has seized the lead role out of the backfield while Darrell Henderson has missed time in recent weeks before landing on injured reserve Tuesday with an MCL sprain.

Status TBD for Week 17
Coach Sean McVay was noncommittal about Akers (Achilles) suiting up Sunday at Baltimore, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers returned to practice last Thursday and was activated from the reserve/non-football injury list Saturday, but the Rams opted to keep him on the sideline Week 16 in Minnesota. When L.A. posted its first practice report of Week 17, the second-year running back wasn't included, signifying that he was closing in on a quicker return than expected from the torn Achilles he suffered in mid-July. McVay noted Week 18 against the 49ers or the postseason itself were the target dates for Akers to come back, so he could be a healthy scratch this weekend with that in mind. Even when he returns, though, Akers may be eased into action with Sony Michel running so efficiently over the last four games.

Full participant at walkthrough
Akers (Achilles) was a full participant at Wednesday's walkthrough, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rams merely released an estimated practice report, but Akers handled every rep thrown his way to kick off Week 17 prep. His activity level may diminish if/when the team holds an actual practice this week, but he seems to be trending toward being available to the offense Sunday at Baltimore. If Akers does so, it'll be quite the accomplishment after tearing his Achilles in mid-July. With Darrell Henderson going on IR with a sprained knee this week, Akers could act as Sony Michel's direct backup right away, especially because seventh-round rookie Jake Funk and fourth-year pro Buddy Howell are the other healthy running backs on the active roster.

May make season debut Sunday
Coach Sean McVay said Monday that Akers (Achilles) has a chance to return to action Sunday in Baltimore, J.B. Long of the Los Angeles Rams Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rams sustained yet another hit to their backfield Sunday in Minnesota, where Darrell Henderson went down with a knee injury and was unable to return. McVay relayed Henderson suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee and is poised for a stint on injured reserve, which may have precipitated his ensuing comments about Akers. The second-year running back has made an unprecedented recovery from the torn Achilles he sustained just before training camp back in July, as evidenced by L.A. activating him from the reserve/non-football injury list Saturday. Akers was held out of Week 15 action, but his activity in practice this week could set him up for his season debut Sunday. With all of Henderson, Xavier Jones (Achilles) and Raymond Calais (foot) on IR, Sony Michel, Jake Funk and Buddy Howell are the healthy RBs on the team's active roster.

Activation aids pension
Akers (Achilles) might not play during the regular season even though he was activated for the final three weeks of the season, Fox's Peter Schrager reported on their Sunday morning pregame show.
ANALYSIS
However, by activating him now, the Rams made him qualified for another season played according to the NFL's pension plan, by having him available for the final three games of the season.

Activated, but unavailable Sunday
The Rams activated Akers (Achilles) from the reserve/non-football injury list Saturday, but he won't travel with the team for Sunday's game at Minnesota, making him unavailable for Week 16 action, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rams always hinted Akers was further along in his recovery from a mid-July Achilles tear, which came to fruition when he was designated for return Thursday. Just two days later, he's back on the active roster, but the team will wait to mix him into the game plan for at least one more week. In the meantime, Sony Michel and Darrell Henderson will continue to man L.A.'s backfield.

Designated for return
The Rams designated Akers (Achilles) for return from the reserve/non-football injury list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Akers sustained a torn Achilles while training just before the start of training camp in mid-July. The Rams initially placed him on the active/NFI list before moving him to the reserve version after the preseason, seemingly with the hope that the running back would be healthy for a potential return in the postseason. Thursday's move indicates there's a chance Akers will be well enough to play at some point in January. Whether that happens Week 17 and/or 18 or during the playoffs remains to be seen, but the procedural move has happened for L.A. to get him back on the active roster in the near future. In the meantime, coach Sean McVay will continue to lean on Sony Michel and Darrell Henderson out of the backfield.

Could be back for playoff run
Head coach Sean McVay said Monday that he's "definitely not" ruling Akers (Achilles) out from playing if the Rams should qualify for the playoffs, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports. "You don't want to be presumptuous at all. We've got to handle our business but if you said we give ourselves an opportunity to play after the season, would there be a possible Cam sighting playing for the Rams? That's not something I would rule out," McVay said.
ANALYSIS
When Akers suffered a torn Achilles' tendon in late July and subsequently underwent surgery, the prevailing assumption was that he would miss the entirety of the 2021 regular season and postseason. While a return during the playoffs still looks like far from a lock, Akers looks like he'll at least have an outside shot at making in back in mid-to-late January, given how well his rehab process has gone thus far. Akers has been sharing updates on his rehab through his personal Instagram account, with the running back most recently posting a video last week of himself going through ladder drills. According to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic, McVay added that Akers is currently running at 80 percent of his body weight at around 10 miles per hour "pretty effortlessly."

Officially on reserve/NFI list
The Rams officially placed Akers (Achilles) on the reserve/non-football injury list, Stu Jackson of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers suffered a torn Achilles in July while readying himself for training camp, kicking it off on the active/non-football injury list. Now with the preseason and roster cuts behind them, the Rams made the procedural move and put him on the reserve version of the list. In Akers' absence, the team is poised to ride Darrell Henderson (thumb) and Sony Michael out of the backfield.

On IR, as expected
Akers (Achilles) was officially placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After Akers tore his Achilles while working out in advance of training camp in July, there was hope on the Rams' part that he'd be able to return at some point this season, but in the end the expected outcome has come to pass for the second-year running back. He'll thus miss the season while a combination of Darrell Henderson (thumb) and Sony Michel lead L.A.'s backfield.

Fumbles in scrimmage
Akers lost a fumble during Saturday's scrimmage, Jordan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
At first glance, a rookie being stripped in what has to be considered an exhibition game in this unprecedented preseason is worrisome. However, it was All-Pro Aaron Donald who dislodged the ball, and Akers' early-season fantasy outlook might have even improved with sophomore Darrell Henderson sustaining a hamstring strain Saturday. Henderson is questionable for Week 1, and while veteran Malcolm Brown was the first running back on the field during the scrimmage, he doesn't offer the same athleticism or big-play potential as Akers. It's definitely still a murky depth chart, but Akers probably remains the best long-term option for fantasy managers from the Los Angeles backfield.

Could land in committee
Coach Sean McVay mentioned Akers, Malcolm Brown, Darrell Henderson (ankle) and John Kelly as options to take carries in 2020, per The Helliepod podcast.
ANALYSIS
When asked about his backfield, McVay pointed to the division-rival 49ers as a possible blueprint, noting how Kyle Shanahan assembled a top-notch rushing attack without using any one player as a bellcow. Shanahan's approach is a stark contrast from what we've seen in Los Angeles, where Todd Gurley just ripped off four straight seasons with a snap share of 73.9 percent or higher in his active games. As a rookie second-round pick, Akers is the upside play for fantasy managers, but he'll first need to earn his snaps with a strong showing in training camp. Brown has the advantage of three years' experience in McVay's system, while Henderson is probably the fastest of the bunch and might also prove to be the best receiving weapon. It was a bit surprising to hear McVay mention Kelly, who has played just eight games through two pro seasons and was demoted to the practice squad at one point last fall.

New OC pumps tires
Akers' determination as a runner and ability to create yardage on his own was praised by new offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
O'Connell also noted the uphill battle ahead of Akers because of the unconventional 2020 offseason, but there aren't many other obstacles in the rookie's path to a significant workload out of the backfield. Malcolm Brown' 197 career carries are the most among current Rams running backs, and 2019 third-round selection Darrell Henderson's disappointing rookie season consisted of just 95 offensive snaps over 13 games.
