Carson Wentz Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Vikings vs Packers game on Sunday with our National Football League injury report.Oct 27, 2025
Slated for season-ending surgery
Wentz is expected to undergo season-ending surgery to address his left shoulder injury, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz played the majority of snaps in Minnesota's last five games with J.J. McCarthy (ankle) working his way back from a multi-week injury, but the veteran was clearly playing through pain during last Thursday's 37-10 loss to the Chargers. Per Dane Mizutani of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Vikings have officially placed Wentz on IR. The transaction confirms that McCarthy will start Sunday's road matchup against the Lions, if healthy, and leaves Max Brosmer in position to handle No. 2 quarterback duties for Minnesota.
Oct 24, 2025
Likely back to bench Week 9
Wentz (shoulder) is expected to cede the starting quarterback role to J.J. McCarthy (ankle) in Week 9 against the Lions, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz's injury may be a bigger concern than McCarthy's at this point, as Wentz played through significant pain while using a harness on his left, non-throwing shoulder in Thursday's 37-10 loss to the Chargers. Wentz was listed as a full participant in practice Tuesday and Wednesday, but those were practice estimates as the Vikings held walk-throughs. Even if Wentz is medically cleared to take the field in Week 9, McCarthy has been steadily progressing in his recovery from an ankle injury and should be ready to take the reins by Nov. 2.
Oct 24, 2025
Ragged showing in Week 8 loss
Wentz completed 15 of 27 passes for 144 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the Vikings' 37-10 loss to the Chargers on Thursday night. He also fumbled once but recovered.
ANALYSIS
Wentz's final stat line essentially underscores how difficult a night it was for the veteran quarterback against a defense that sacked him five times. The 2016 second overall pick finished with a meager 67.5 QB rating and essentially sealed the loss with his one pick, which came at the Chargers' 33-yard line early in the fourth quarter on a pass intended for Justin Jefferson. Wentz certainly has had his moments during his five-game starting tenure, but his days as the top quarterback may be over for the time being because J.J. McCarthy (ankle) should have a chance to return for a Week 9 divisional road clash against the Lions on Sunday, Nov. 2.
Oct 21, 2025
Full participant Tuesday
Wentz (shoulder) was a full participant at the Vikings' walkthrough Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz is officially set to draw a fifth straight start Thursday night versus the Chargers. The quarterback opened the week as a limited participant due to a shoulder injury, but head coach Kevin O'Connell named him as the starter Tuesday. Wentz had an uneven outing in Week 7 against the Eagles, completing 26 of 42 passes for 313 yards while throwing two interceptions in the team's 28-22 loss.
Oct 21, 2025
Remaining starter for Week 8
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said that Wentz (shoulder) will start at quarterback in Thursday's game against the Chargers in Los Angeles.
ANALYSIS
Though J.J. McCarthy is expected to take over as the Vikings' starting quarterback once he's 100 percent healthy, O'Connell conceded that the second-year signal-caller is "just not there" in his recovery from a high-ankle sprain and will be inactive as the team's emergency third quarterback once again in Week 8, per Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com. O'Connell indicated that McCarthy was able to go through an on-field workout Tuesday and may have had a shot at returning to action this week if the Vikings played on a Sunday, so the 22-year-old seems to be progressing on some level and could be ready to start Week 9 in Detroit. For at least one more game, however, the Vikings will stick with Wentz, who has been tending to an injury to his non-throwing shoulder since Week 5 but isn't expected to face any limitations come Thursday. Through his first four starts, Wentz has completed 95 of 142 pass attempts (66.9 percent) for 1,072 yards (7.5 YPA) and a 5:4 TD:INT while adding 57 yards on 11 carries.
Oct 20, 2025
Limited on estimated report
Wentz (left shoulder) was listed as limited on Monday's practice estimate, Craig Peters of the Vikings' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz initially injured his left non-throwing shoulder Week 5 against the Browns in London but was able to suit up Sunday against the Eagles following a Week 6 bye. Overall, he completed 26 of 42 passes for 313 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions, tallied four carries for 28 yards and didn't lose his only fumble. Wentz is averaging 268 passing yards per game and has a 5:4 TD:INT in his four-game starting stint in place of second-year signal-caller J.J. McCarthy, who remains in recovery mode from the high right-ankle sprain that he suffered Week 2. McCarthy also was listed as limited Monday, but Wentz appears poised to lead Minnesota's offense again Thursday at the Chargers, something that likely will be announced in advance of that contest.
Oct 19, 2025
Mixed bag in Week 7 loss
Wentz completed 26 of 42 passes for 313 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions and added four rushes for 28 yards in the Vikings' 28-22 loss to the Eagles on Sunday. He also fumbled once but recovered.
ANALYSIS
Facing the team that drafted him second overall back in 2016, Wentz put together a fantasy-friendly effort save for his pair of interceptions, one which was a pick-six. The veteran signal-caller connected on 25+-yard completions with each of his top three receivers -- Jordan Addison, Justin Jefferson and Jalen Nailor -- and he saw a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson reversed on replay when it was determined the tight end didn't maintain control all the way through his attempted catch. Wentz's yardage total marked his second time eclipsing the 300-yard threshold during his four-game starting tenure, and he projects to remain under center for Thursday night's Week 8 road matchup against the Chargers since the Vikings are expected to give J.J. McCarthy (ankle) one more game before considering reinserting him into action.
Oct 17, 2025
Named Week 7 starter
Wentz will start Sunday's game against the Eagles, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell made the announcement Friday afternoon, naming Max Brosmer as his Week 7 backup and J.J. McCarthy (ankle) as the emergency No. 3 QB. Wentz's fourth start of 2025 comes against the team that drafted him 2nd overall back in 2016. He's played reasonably well for the Vikings so far, completing 69.0 percent of passes for 7.6 YPA, with per-game averages of 33.3 attempts, 253.0 yards and 1.6 TDs. Minnesota's offense is fantasy-friendly for quarterbacks, but Wentz doesn't add much on the ground (29 yards, no TDs) and has a well-earned reputation for untimely mistakes.
Oct 15, 2025
Full participant Wednesday
Wentz (shoulder) practiced fully Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz emerged from the Vikings' last game Week 5 against the Browns in London with an injury to his left, non-throwing shoulder. Coach Kevin O'Connell said Wednesday that Wentz handled every throw at Monday's unofficial session, and the veteran signal-caller seemingly maintained that activity level two days later. Per Alec Lewis of The Athletic, O'Connell also wouldn't name a starter for Week 7 between Wentz and second-year pro J.J. McCarthy, who was limited Wednesday in his first practice since he suffered a high right-ankle sprain Week 2. How McCarthy fares as the week continues likely will determine who is under center for Minnesota on Sunday versus the Eagles.
Oct 13, 2025
Returns from sore shoulder
Wentz (sore left shoulder) was able to practice Monday, the Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz briefly left Minnesota's last game Oct. 6 against the Browns in London with a sore left, non-throwing shoulder but was able to finish the game. It sounds like the rest during the team's bye shouldn't make this an issue for his playing time. However, J.J. McCarthy (ankle) returned to practice Monday for the first time since Sept. 14, so Wentz may move to the bench Sunday against the Eagles. However, the Vikings will likely decide on a starting quarterback later in the week.
Oct 6, 2025
Shoulder being evaluated
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday that Wentz's left shoulder injury will be further evaluated this week, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz briefly left Sunday's game against the Browns in London and went to the locker room early just before halftime, but he was under center after the break and was able to finish the contest. The injury was to his left, non-throwing shoulder. With J.J. McCarthy (ankle) likely to return to practice at some point following the Vikings' upcoming Week 6 bye, McCarthy could be back under center in Week 7 against the Eagles.
Oct 5, 2025
Toughs out shoulder issue in win
Wentz completed 25 of 34 passes for 236 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions while adding three rushes for 13 yards in the Vikings' 21-17 win over the Browns in London on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz exited the game with a left shoulder injury late in the second quarter, although he technically only missed the end-of-half kneel-down play before returning to start the second half. The veteran quarterback's presence would end up proving critical in the Vikings' comeback win, as Wentz battled through the injury and a ferocious Browns pass rush to ultimately helm a game-winning 10-play, 80-yard march that he capped off with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Addison. Wentz went a blistering 9-for-9 on that final drive, capping off what might have been the final installment of his current starting tenure in fine fashion. Minnesota now heads into a Week 6 bye, and J.J. McCarthy (ankle) may be ready to return to action when the Eagles pay a visit for a Week 7 matchup on Sunday, Oct. 19.
Oct 5, 2025
Returns to Sunday's game
Wentz returned to Sunday's game against the Browns for the third quarter after having exited with a left shoulder injury in the second quarter.
ANALYSIS
Wentz will thus look to help the Vikings overcome a 10-7 halftime deficit, with Max Brosmer on hand should he suffer an setbacks with his (non-throwing) shoulder.
Oct 5, 2025
Exits Sunday's game
Wentz was forced out of Sunday's game against the Browns with a left shoulder injury in the second quarter.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his exit from the contest, Wentz completed seven of his 12 passing attempts for 73 yards and carried twice for 12 yards. Next up for the Vikings' QB reps is Max Brosmer.
Oct 3, 2025
Headed for another start
Wentz is slated to start at quarterback Sunday's game against the Browns in London, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With J.J. McCarthy (ankle) having yet to resume practicing and set to miss his third straight game Sunday, Wentz will pick up another start, including his second in a row overseas. Through his first two games at the helm, Wentz has guided the Vikings to a 1-1 record while completing 44 of 66 pass attempts for 523 yards and four touchdowns. However, despite his generally efficient play, Wentz has been prone to some sloppiness, as he's tossed two interceptions and has taken nine sacks behind a banged-up offensive line. The Vikings will once again be without three starting offensive linemen in Week 5 against a stout Browns defense, which could render Wentz an unreliable fantasy option in leagues that start just one quarterback. Minnesota is on bye for Week 6, so the health of McCarthy in addition to Wentz's performance against the Browns will both be factors in determining which of the two quarterbacks will garner the start Week 7 versus the Eagles.
Sep 28, 2025
Big volume in Week 4 loss
Wentz completed 30 of 46 passes for 350 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in Sunday's 24-21 loss to the Steelers in Dublin. He added 12 rushing yards on two carries and also threw a two-point conversion to Jalen Nailor.
ANALYSIS
The Vikings lost right tackle Brian O'Neill to a knee injury and center Ryan Kelly to a concussion in the first half, and Wentz was under constant pressure as a result, getting sacked six times in total. Minnesota headed into the fourth quarter staring at a 21-6 deficit, but Wentz was able to lead a comeback that fell just short, hitting Zavier Scott for a 16-yard TD and Nailor for a two-yard score inside the final four minutes. On the other hand, the veteran QB almost threw a third INT in crunch time, only to have it overturned upon review. With J.J. McCarthy (ankle) not quite 100 percent yet, Wentz is expected to get another start in London for a Week 5 clash with the Browns, but he'll need to take better care of the ball to have a shot at retaining the job when the Vikings return from Europe.
Sep 21, 2025
Two TDs in Sunday's start
Wentz completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions while adding two rush attempts for four yards in the Vikings' 48-10 win over the Bengals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Making the first of what project to be multiple starts in place of J.J. McCarthy (ankle), Wentz enjoyed some good fortune in the form of game script. The veteran signal-caller certainly had a hand in that by connecting with Josh Oliver on a 12-yard touchdown pass to cap off the opening possession, and the Vikings' defense's ability to repeatedly stymie fellow backup-turned-starter Jake Browning also played out favorably for Wentz in terms of being able to continue running a balanced offense. The Vikings eventually ran away with the game beginning in the second quarter, leaving Wentz in a low-pressure scenario that he thrived in. With McCarthy's recovery expected to take multiple weeks, Wentz projects to remain under center when the Vikings face off with the Steelers in Dublin, Ireland next Sunday.
Sep 15, 2025
Candidate for Week 3 start
Wentz could start Sunday's game against the Bengals with the status of J.J. McCarthy (ankle) uncertain, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell hasn't yet ruled out McCarthy, but he said Monday that the second-year quarterback's status for Week 3 is unclear due to a sprained ankle, leaving Wentz in likely position to step in under center and command Minnesota's offense. With Joe Burrow (toe) in line for an extended absence, that positions Wentz for a showdown at home against a Cincinnati team led by Jake Browning. Meanwhile, Jordan Addison (suspension) is still one game removed from being eligible for reinstatement, and Aaron Jones (hamstring) appears unlikely for Week 3, leaving WRs Justin Jefferson, Jalen Nailor and Adam Thielen, RB Jordan Mason and TE T.J. Hockenson positioned as the top skill-position weapons available for Wentz.
Aug 24, 2025
Set to sign with Minnesota
The Vikings are signing Wentz to a contract, Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network report.
ANALYSIS
Wentz had a workout with Minnesota on Saturday, and the team apparently liked what it saw from the veteran QB. Heading into the weekend, Sam Howell had been slated to back up starter J.J. McCarthy for the Vikings, but Howell was traded to the Eagles on Sunday in a deal that also included draft picks. The trade cleared the way for Wentz to be the obvious No. 2 QB in Minnesota, giving the club a veteran backup with plenty of prior success and a mentor for McCarthy, who hasn't yet played in his first NFL regular-season game.
Aug 23, 2025
Gets look from Minnesota
The Vikings brought in Wentz for a workout on Saturday, Ben Goessling of The Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
It appears the Vikings may not be settled on Sam Howell as the backup quarterback to J.J. McCarthy heading into 2025. Wentz served as a backup in each of his last two seasons with the Rams (2023) and Chiefs (2024), and his last season as a full-time starter was in 2022 with Washington before losing the job to Taylor Heinicke in Week 7. McCarthy missed his entire rookie campaign while rehabbing from a meniscus tear, so having a proven veteran like Wentz in the quarterback room would give head coach Kevin McConnell a little more comfort heading into the regular season.
Feb 16, 2025
Makes one start in 2024
Wentz finished the 2024 regular season completing 12 of 19 passes for 118 yards while logging zero rushing yards on three carries across three games (including one start).
ANALYSIS
Wentz signed a one-year, $3.33 million contract with the Chiefs in April of 2024 after spending the second half of the 2023 campaign with the Rams. He came in relief for Patrick Mahomes in Week 7 and 15, but Wentz was named the starter for Week 18 against the Broncos after the Chiefs locked the AFC's No. 1 seed after beating the Steelers in Week 17. It was an unimpressive outing for Wentz, who completed 10 of 17 passes for 98 yards in a 38-0 blowout loss. The 2016 second-overall pick enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, and it remains to be seen whether he sticks around in Kansas City to continue to serve as the No. 2 QB or explore his options elsewhere.
Jan 6, 2025
Unimpressive in Week 18
Wentz completed 10 of 17 passes for 98 yards in Sunday's 38-0 loss to the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
The Chiefs entered Sunday's game locked into the top seed in the AFC, so Wentz drew the start in place of the resting Patrick Mahomes. It's difficult to get a true gauge of his performance given that the Chiefs rested all their top playmakers while Denver played most of its top defensive players, but Wentz's stat line left plenty to be desired. Mahomes will be back under center when the Chiefs take the field next in the divisional round of the playoffs.
Jan 1, 2025
Set to start Sunday
Wentz will start Sunday's regular-season finale against the Broncos, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
With the Chiefs having clinched the AFC's No. 1 playoff seed, head coach Andy Reid noted Wednesday that "it wasn't a hard decision" to rest starting QB Patrick Mahomes in Week 18, per Nate Taylor of The Athletic. "I've been through it before" Reid added. "I'm not too worried. It gives the other guys an opportunity to grow." In this case, Wentz will get the starting nod, with Chris Oladokun presumably in line to be elevated from the practice squad to serve as Kansas City's No. 2 QB versus Denver.
Dec 30, 2024
Looks set for Week 18 start
Wentz is expected to serve as the Chiefs' starting quarterback in Sunday's game at Denver with Patrick Mahomes likely to be rested for the regular-season finale, Peter Schrager of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Heading into Week 18, the Chiefs have already secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs, so the team is expected to rest several key players including Mahomes, who has been playing through a mild high-ankle sprain in the past two games. Wentz -- who has played nine total snaps all season -- thus appears headed for his first extended action since Week 18 of 2023, when his former Rams squad faced a similar scenario heading into the regular-season finale and opted to rest normal starter Matthew Stafford. The likelihood that the Chiefs hold out or restrict the workloads of other top playmakers and linemen could limit Wentz's fantasy appeal for Week 18, and Schrager suggests that Kansas City may even turn to practice-squad call-up Chris Oladokun to relieve Wentz at some point in the contest.
Dec 15, 2024
Sees emergency duty Sunday
Wentz entered Sunday's 21-7 win over the Browns with 5:23 remaining in the fourth quarter for Patrick Mahomes (ankle) and completed both of his pass attempts for 20 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also netted no gain on three carries.
ANALYSIS
Mahomes had been bent back awkwardly on the last play of the prior Chiefs possession and limped off the field, necessitating Wentz's second appearance this season and leading to his first two regular-season pass attempts as a Chief. Mahomes was seen with his left ankle heavily taped on the sideline late in the game, so the short week ahead of a Week 16 Saturday afternoon matchup against the Texans will begin with the star signal-caller's status uncertain and Wentz therefore looking at the possibility of a spot start if the issue proves serious enough.
Oct 23, 2024
Makes team debut
Wentz played one of the Chiefs' 70 snaps on offense in Sunday's 28-18 win over the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Signed to a one-year, $3.33 million contract in April, Wentz emerged from the preseason as the winner of the competition for the backup role behind starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Wentz got the chance to make his Chiefs debut in the second quarter, when head coach Andy Reid dialed up a unique two-quarterback formation near the goal line featuring both Mahomes and Wentz. Wentz took the snap and handed the ball off to Kareem Hunt, who was stopped at the one-yard line.
Apr 1, 2024
Heading to Kansas City
Wentz signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs on Monday, Jordan Schultz of BleacherReport.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz will compete for a backup role behind Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. His competition includes Chris Oladokun and Ian Book as of now. Wentz completed 17 of 24 passes for 163 yards, two touchdowns and one interception to go along with 17 carries for 56 yards and a touchdwon during the 2023 campaign as a backup for the Rams.
Jan 15, 2024
Future uncertain after lone start
Wentz finished the 2023 regular season completing 17 of 24 pass attempts for 163 yards, two touchdowns and one interception and added 17 carries for 56 yards and a touchdown.
ANALYSIS
After Matthew Stafford went down with a thumb injury and missed part of Week 8 and all of Week 9, Brett Rypien came in and performed poorly (18-of-38 for 172 yards and an interception), prompting the Rams to take a chance on Wentz. For his part, the former No. 2 overall pick in 2016 proved up to the task against the 49ers in Week 18, taking the reigns and helping Puka Nacua set the all-time rookie reception and receiving yard marks while turning in nearly as many rushing attempts in one game as he had in eight games with the Commanders in 2022. Wentz still wants to be a starting quarterback heading into his age-31 campaign, and the unrestricted free agent might get one more chance to prove he can helm an offense with the cavalcade of ineffective and injured quarterbacks that littered the NFL landscape in 2023. If that doesn't work out, a return to the Rams to be a quality backup behind Stafford seems like a distinct possibility.
Jan 7, 2024
Scores three TDs in spot-start
Wentz completed 17 of 24 pass attempts for 163 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while adding 56 yards and a rushing touchdown on 17 carries in Sunday's 21-20 win over San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
Wentz made his first start of the season in Week 18 with starter Matthew Stafford resting for the playoff-bound Rams. The veteran backup generated three touchdowns while leading his team to victory Sunday. Wentz will continue backing up Stafford for as long as Los Angeles' playoff run lasts before becoming an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason.
Jan 3, 2024
Gets starting nod for season finale
Wentz will start Sunday's regular-season finale against the 49ers, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Matthew Stafford will get a week off for the Rams, who are locked into a wild-card spot in the NFC. Wentz will make his first start since Week 17 of the 2022 season, when he was with Washington. It will be the 93rd start of the 31-year-old quarterback's career, and Wentz owns a 151:66 career TD:INT while having previously played for the Eagles, Colts and Commanders.
Nov 8, 2023
Officially on active roster
The Rams officially signed Wentz to their active roster Wednesday, Stu Jackson of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
After a rollicking Tuesday in which the Rams waived Brett Rypien and cut Dresser Winn from the practice squad, it also was reported that Wentz was in line to sign with the team. It wasn't clear until one day later that Wentz in fact was joining the active roster to back up Matthew Stafford moving forward. Rypien's uninspiring performance this past Sunday at Green Bay may have been the impetus, and Wentz now seems destined to serve as the No. 2 QB after L.A.'s Week 10 bye, considering coach Sean McVay expressed confidence Monday in Stafford's ability to play in the team's next outing Sunday, Nov. 19 against the Seahawks, per Jackson. Such an outcome isn't guaranteed, though, so Wentz isn't far away from his first game action since Week 17 of last season.
Nov 7, 2023
Finds new home in Los Angeles
The Rams signed Wentz on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz is expected to slide in as Matthew Stafford's backup in Los Angeles. With Stafford missing part of Week 8 and then the entirety of Week 9 with a thumb injury, the Rams couldn't move the ball with Brett Rypien under center. Rypien completed just 47.4 percent of his throws for 172 yards at 4.5 yards per attempt with no touchdowns. The Rams now have their Week 10 bye to get Wentz up to speed on the playbook in the event Stafford isn't ready to return for Week 11 against the Seahawks.
May 14, 2023
Open to backup job
Wentz has been working out in Los Angeles and is open to taking a backup role, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz averaged less than 7.0 yards per pass attempt and 220 passing yards per game each of the past three seasons wile starting for three different teams. He's reportedly received interest from NFL teams -- presumably for backup jobs 00 since Washington released him in February. The 30-year-old is unlikely to find a chance to compete for a starting job but might be hoping injuries open that up at some point before Week 1 if he's patient.
Feb 27, 2023
Released by Washington
The Commanders released Wentz on Monday.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Wentz has been let go to save over $26 million in cap space before his roster bonus triggered March 17. The veteran quarterback was traded to Washington ahead of the 2022 campaign, but after two solid outings to start the season, he completed just 60.8 percent of his passes over his next six appearances and threw six interceptions to just four touchdowns during that stretch. There's plenty of teams in need of a starting quarterback, but Wentz's recent track record may force him to settle for a backup gig in 2023. If he joins a new team this summer, it'll mark his fourth squad in as many years.
Jan 11, 2023
Facing uncertain future
Commanders GM Martin Mayhew declined to answer when reporters asked him if Wentz will be back with the team in 2023, Scott Abraham of 7News DC reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz presumably needs to accept a pay cut to have any chance at returning, as he's scheduled for a non-guaranteed $20 million base salary in 2023 and has a $5 million roster bonus due March 17, per Spotrac. Having traded for Wentz last offseason, the Commanders can get out of his contract without any dead-cap charge after he went 2-5 as a starter and finished bottom five among qualified passers for YPA (6.0), INT rate (3.3 percent), passer rating (80.2) and QBR (32.7). It was a bad enough season that he may only be in the mix for backup jobs in 2023.
Jan 8, 2023
Inactive Sunday
Wentz is inactive for Sunday's season finale against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
While Wentz is inactive, rookie Sam Howell is slated to start Sunday's contest, with Taylor Heinicke in line to serve as the team's No. 2 QB in Week 18.
Jan 4, 2023
Likely to be inactive Sunday
Wentz is likely to be inactive for Sunday's game against the Cowboys with the Commanders expected to return Taylor Heinicke to the starting role for the season finale and with rookie fifth-round Sam Howell slated to play as Heinicke's primary backup, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After impressing in relief of a struggling Heinicke in the Commanders' Week 16 loss to the 49ers, Wentz reclaimed the starting gig Week 17. In his first start since Week 6, Wentz fared poorly in a 24-10 loss to the Browns, completing just 16 of 28 attempts for 143 yards and three interceptions while adding a touchdown on the ground as the 7-8-1 Commanders saw their playoff hopes disappear. With little at stake in the finale, head coach Ron Rivera appears prepared to go back to Heinicke under center while also getting a first glimpse at Howell, who has yet to make his NFL debut. Wentz, meanwhile, may have played his last snap for the Commanders. He's under contract through 2024 but has no guaranteed money on his deal beyond the 2022 season, making him a possible cut candidate this offseason.
Jan 2, 2023
Three picks in loss
Wentz completed 16 of 28 passes for 143 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Browns. He added three rushes for seven yards and a touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Wentz returned to a starting role for the first time since Week 6 and did not fare well. He struggled to get the Commanders' offense moving and concluded two of the team's first three offensive possessions with an interception. Things improved slightly from there, and the highlight of Wentz's game came on a one-yard touchdown rush just before halftime. Even so, Wentz managed only 5.1 yards per attempt and made several impactful mistakes, leaving the door open for Taylor Heinicke to return as the starter in Week 18, per Ben Standig of The Athletic.
Dec 28, 2022
Starting in Week 17
Wentz will draw the start at quarterback for the Commanders versus the Browns on Sunday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz, who started the team's first six games of the season prior to breaking his right ring finger Oct. 13, replaced Taylor Heinicke in Saturday's 37-20 loss to the 49ers en route to completing 12 of 16 passes for 123 yards and a TD. With the 7-7-1 Commanders having gone 0-2-1 over their last three games, the team will turn to Wentz in Week 17. He'll be facing a Cleveland defense that has allowed an average of 201.5 passing yards per game to date.
Dec 24, 2022
Performs well in relief of starter
Wentz entered Saturday's contest in relief of struggling starter Taylor Heinicke, completing 12 of 16 pass attempts for 123 yards and a touchdown in a 37-20 loss to San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
There were already rumblings of Wentz taking over for the Commanders following the team's recent skid, and that narrative will only get louder after the backup outperformed the starter (albeit in garbage time). Head coach Ron Rivera said that he will review the film and make a decision on his starting quarterback well ahead of next Sunday's kickoff against the Browns, the Washington Post's Nicki Jhabvala reports. If Wentz were to reclaim the starting job, he would be immediately thrust into a tough matchup against Myles Garrett and Cleveland's eighth-ranked pass defense.
Dec 13, 2022
Confirmed as backup QB
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday that Wentz will serve as the backup quarterback behind starter Taylor Heinicke in Sunday's game against the Giants, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Rivera hasn't completed closed the door on Wentz reclaiming the starting job at some point, but at least for the time being, the Commanders will stick with Heinicke, who has guided the team to a 5-1-1 record through his first seven outings of 2022. Heinicke has been propped up by the running game and the Commanders' defense to some degree, as he's completed 61.7 percent of his throws for 6.8 yards per attempt, nine touchdowns and five interceptions while adding 67 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries this season. Wentz posted similar numbers over his six starts prior to landing on injured reserve but was much more prone to taking sacks, so the Commanders won't deviate from what has thus far proven to be a winning formula with Heinicke at the helm.
Dec 12, 2022
Activated from IR
The Commanders activated Wentz (finger) from injured reserve Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz stands to serve as the primary backup to Taylor Heinicke now that he's returned to Washington's active roster, beginning with Sunday's divisional contest against the Giants. The veteran hasn't played since Week 6 due to having undergone right ring finger surgery. In his six starts this season, Wentz threw 10 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Nov 23, 2022
Won't play this week
Wentz (finger) was designated Wednesday to return from injured reserve, but the Commanders will stick with Taylor Heinicke and Sam Howell as their top two quarterbacks for at least one more week, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz can return to practice, perhaps with the goal of coming back for Week 13, or else after the Week 14 bye. The Commanders reportedly now view Taylor Heinicke as their starter, leaving Wentz in a backup role unless/until his teammate's performance leads to a benching. This Sunday against Atlanta it'll be Heinicke getting the start and Howell serving as the backup.
Nov 23, 2022
Designated for return to practice
The Commanders announced Wednesday that Wentz (finger) has been designated for a return to practice from IR.
ANALYSIS
Wentz now has a 21-day window wherein he can be evaluated at practice without counting against the active roster, though he is expected to serve as the backup to Taylor Heinecke once back to full form, barring any unforeseen changes at the quarterback position. The veteran is recovering from right ring finger surgery undergone Oct. 17, and while he could be available for action as early as Sunday's contest against the Falcons, it appears the Commanders don't intend Wentz to re-enter the starting lineup. Heinicke has led Washington to a 3-1 record as a starter, and if Wentz were to play 70 percent of the team's offensive snaps this season, the Commanders would have to send a higher 2023 draft pick to Indianapolis.
Nov 20, 2022
Likely to remain backup upon return
Wentz (finger) is expected to serve as the Commanders' backup quarterback once he's activated from injured reserve, with Taylor Heinicke set to retain the starting job "unless something changes dramatically," Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz made enough progress in his recovery from Oct. 17 right ring finger surgery to resume throwing this week, but he hasn't yet been cleared for practice and will remain on IR for a fifth straight game when the Commanders take on the Texans on Sunday. Though Wentz could be available to play as soon as Week 12, the starting job will belong to Heinicke for the final seven games of the season so long as he doesn't miss time due to injury or doesn't see a dramatic downturn in performance in the weeks to come. While Heinicke hasn't posted eye-popping statistics in the absence of Wentz, he's helped lead the Commanders to a 3-1 record during his run as starter to keep the team in the thick of the NFC playoff race. In addition to Heinicke's respectable play, the Commanders are incentivized to keep Wentz on the bench due to the terms of his contract. As Ben Standig of The Athletic notes, if Wentz plays 70 percent of Washington's offensive snaps this season, it would result in the Commanders surrendering a 2023 secon
Nov 16, 2022
Resumes throwing but not practicing
Wentz (finger) has resumed throwing but won't return to practice Wednesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz hasn't been designated to return from injured reserve yet, and it may not happen this week given that the Commanders have already named Taylor Heinicke as their starter for Sunday's game in Houston. However, coach Ron Rivera didn't shut down the possibility of Wentz being active as the backup, and there's still some question about which guy will be the starter once both are at/near full strength. Jhabvala suggests the team is essentially putting off that decision for another week.
Nov 13, 2022
Approaching eligible return date
Wentz (finger) will be eligible to come off injured reserve before the Commanders take on Houston in Week 11, and Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports that the team is preparing for Wentz to reclaim the starting role once healthy.
ANALYSIS
When asked about Wentz's return, Taylor Heinicke said he's prepared to return to a backup role. Heinicke could make a convincing case to remain the starting quarterback if he can beat the Eagles on Monday, but if Heinicke drops to 2-2 as the starter in Wentz's absence, the offseason trade acquisition will likely be handed the starting job back upon his return. Wentz topped 300 passing yards in three of six starts, while Heinicke has yet to hit that mark.
Oct 22, 2022
Lands on IR
The Commanders have officially placed Wentz (finger) on injured reserve, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz underwent surgery on his right ring finger earlier in the week and will now be forced to spend at least the next four weeks on IR. As a result, Taylor Heinicke is expected to replace him under center with rookie fifth-round pick Sam Howell providing depth.
Oct 17, 2022
No decision yet on IR stint
Wentz, who underwent surgery on his right ring finger Monday, will sit out at least Week 7 against the Packers, and the Commanders have yet to make a call on an IR stint for the quarterback, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Placing Wentz on injured reserve would result in at least four games on the sideline, so it's understandable Washington will hold off on an immediate decision on that front. In any case, he's now on to the recovery phase from the injury that he sustained last Thursday in Chicago. While Wentz sits out, the Commanders will turn to Taylor Heinicke under center, with rookie fifth-round pick Sam Howell in reserve.
Oct 17, 2022
Undergoes surgery Monday
Wentz had surgery on the broken ring finger on his right hand Monday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz picked up the injury during the Commanders' Week 6 win at Chicago. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Wentz is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks following the procedure, allowing backup Taylor Heinicke to direct the offense for at least the next few games.
Oct 17, 2022
Expected to miss 4-6 weeks
Wentz is expected to miss 4-6 weeks as he recovers from the fractured right ring finger he suffered in the Week 6 win over the Bears, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor Heinicke will take over under center in Week 7 against the Packers and likely for a few more games after that. Per Rapoport, the Commanders are considering placing Wentz on injured reserve, though that decision won't come until the quarterback concludes his meeting with a hand specialist Monday.
Oct 15, 2022
Fractures finger in win
Wentz (ankle/biceps) suffered a fractured finger in Thursday's win over the Bears and his status moving forward is uncertain, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
It was previously reported Wentz suffered minor injuries to both his ankle and biceps, but the fractured finger is unquestionably the worst of what evidently was a rough Thursday night contest for the veteran. Wentz is expected to see a hand specialist to determine the severity of the injury and whether he's able to play through the issue. Taylor Heinicke would likely step in as Wentz's replacement if the starter is unable to play, but rookie fifth-round pick Sam Howell could also be in contention for the backup job given the Commanders' 2-4 record. Expect the team to release more details regarding Wentz's status in the coming days.
Oct 14, 2022
Banged up after Week 6 win
Wentz came out of Thursday's win over the Bears with minor injuries to his ankle and biceps, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It sounds like the Commanders expect Wentz to be fine, at least from a health standpoint, with 10 days of rest between the ugly Thursday win and an Oct. 23 matchup with Green Bay in Week 7. He was bothered by his shoulder ahead of Thursday's game, and it's possible that injury -- combined with the others -- contributed to his 22-attempt, 99-yard effort against the Bears. Wentz should get more volume Week 7 even if he's not 100 percent healthy.
Oct 13, 2022
Sub-100-yard effort in Week 6 win
Wentz (shoulder) completed 12 of 22 passes for 99 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed twice for two yards in the Commanders' 12-7 win over the Bears on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
It was reported earlier in the day that Wentz was dealing with a biceps tendon strain near his throwing shoulder, and he certainly didn't look 100 percent during Thursday's forgettable statistical showing. The fact the veteran quarterback also had to take another three sacks likely didn't help his condition, but Wentz stayed away from turnovers for the first time all season and leaned heavily on his defense and rookie running back Brian Robinson with success. The fact Wentz was once again down Jahan Dotson (hamstring) and Logan Thomas (calf) also hurt his overall prospects, but he'll have a chance for better health and perhaps the return of his two pass catchers with the extended time off before a Week 7 home matchup against the Packers on Oct. 23.
Oct 12, 2022
Cleared for Thursday
Wentz (shoulder) doesn't have an injury designation for Thursday's game against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Wentz never seemed in serious danger of missing the game, but he'll be without two key pass catchers in WR Jahan Dotson (hamstring) and TE Logan Thomas (calf). The Commanders still have WRs Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel, and the receiving depth has been one of the few positives for the team this season. Wentz gets one of his more favorable matchups Thursday night but is prone to negative plays even against weaker competition.
Oct 11, 2022
Limited again Tuesday
Wentz (shoulder) was listed as limited on the Commanders' injury report Tuesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
As Wentz was on Monday's practice estimate, but the team appeared to go through a light practice or walkthrough one day later. During the open part of Tuesday's session, he made some throws, but after one of them, he reached at his right throwing shoulder, per Sam Fortier of The Washington Post. Wentz will have one more chance this week to log a full practice Wednesday, at which point Washington may tab him with a designation for Thursday's game at Chicago.
Oct 10, 2022
Limited on practice estimate
Wentz (right shoulder) was listed as limited on Monday's practice estimate, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Given that the Commanders just played Sunday, the team held a light walk-through Monday, but with Wentz having been listed as limited, the QB's status will now be worth monitoring ahead of Thursday night's game against the Bears. Look for added context regarding the Week 6 status of Wentz to arrive no later than Tuesday's practice/injury report.
Oct 9, 2022
Throws backbreaking pick
Wentz completed 25 of his 38 passes for 359 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 21-17 loss to the Titans.
ANALYSIS
From an efficiency and box score perspective, Wentz bounced back from consecutive subpar efforts. With Jahan Doston (hamstring) sidelined, Wentz connected with Dyami Brown for a pair of touchdowns from 75 and 30 yards. However, the performance was still marred by several mistakes, including an interception that ended the game from Tennessee's two-yard line. Wentz also fumbled three times, though each was recovered by Washington. All in all, Wentz has the ability to post viable fantasy lines, but he remains a mistake-prone quarterback.
Oct 2, 2022
Struggles second week in a row
Wentz completed 25 of 42 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against Dallas on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was only sacked twice in this game, but he took another 11 hits after enduring nine sacks and 17 hits in Week 3. Some of Wentz's pressure struggles are brought on by himself, but 28 hits in two weeks is just too much even if the quarterback is partially to blame. If there's good news it's that the Eagles and Cowboys pass rushes both look formidable while Week 5 opponent Tennessee probably has a more manageable pass rush. If Wentz can fix his pressure issues then there should be fantasy production to be had again, because his targets remain excellent and Washington looks to throw the ball 40 times per game.
Sep 25, 2022
Collapses against pass rush
Wentz completed 25 of 43 passes for 211 yards against Philadelphia on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz didn't throw any interceptions, but he lost a fumble and took nine sacks and 17 hits in a dreary game where Washington was dominated from almost start to finish. Washington has called a pass-happy offense with Wentz and his first two games were much more successful, so he has a shot to get himself together and bounce back against Dallas in Week 4.
Sep 18, 2022
Tops 300 passing yards again
Wentz completed 30 of 46 passes for 337 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 36-27 loss to the Lions. He added 23 rushing yards on two attempts and threw a two-point conversion.
ANALYSIS
The Commanders trailed 22-0 at halftime, with two of those points coming on a strip sack of Wentz that rolled out of the end zone for a safety. Wentz regrouped at halftime and led a touchdown drive on the first possession of the third quarter, capping it with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Samuel. He stunted Washington's momentum with an interception on the next drive but bounced back again to find Logan Thomas for a 20-yard touchdown and Jahan Dotson for a two-point conversion. A one-yard touchdown to Dotson in the fourth quarter helped pad Wentz's stats, which were buoyed by a pass-heavy game script. Wentz has opened his Commanders tenure with consecutive 300-yard passing performances, and he'll bring a 7:3 TD:INT into a Week 3 matchup with the Eagles.
Sep 11, 2022
Huge debut with new club
Wentz completed 27 of 41 pass attempts for 313 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 28-22 win over Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
Wentz faced off against his old head coach, Doug Pederson, and put together a vintage performance from their Super Bowl season with the Eagles. The 29-year-old has had an inconsistent career, but he is coming off of a solid 2021 while looking sharp in his debut with Washington. His risky style of taking deep shots can result in some ugly interceptions, but fantasy managers in two-QB leagues (or superflex) will take the turnovers so long as he produces gaudy passing totals like Sunday's. As for standard leagues, Wentz is likely just an injury or bye week fill-in until we see him put up these kind of numbers consistently and against better defenses.
Aug 27, 2022
Sitting out preseason finale
Wentz won't play in Saturday's preseason finale against the Ravens, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
As a result, Sam Howell is slated to start the contest, with fellow QB Taylor Heinicke suiting up in case of an emergency. Wentz's next game action is thus slated to occur in Week 1 against the Jaguars.
Aug 22, 2022
Looks decent against Chiefs
Wentz completed six of nine passes for 64 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Both teams played starters, but the Commanders had a slew of guards and tight ends sidelined by injuries, making things tougher on Wentz and easier on the Kansas City defense. While his numbers look alright, Wentz didn't lead Washington to any points in three drives. He's now played six series this preseason and produced seven points, completing 16 of 22 passes for 138 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers. Regardless of his participation in the preseason finale, Wentz will get the starting nod Week 1 against Jacksonville.
Aug 19, 2022
Should play some
Coach Ron Rivera said he'd ideally like Wentz to play the entire first half in Saturday's preseason game against Kansas City, but it may not happen due to injuries along Washington's offensive line, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Commanders have a glut of injuries at guard and tight end, which means Wentz will play with some guys who might not make the Week 1 roster. Still, he's expected to play at least some, after completing 10 of 13 passes for 74 yards in the preseason opener.
Aug 13, 2022
Extended run in preseason opener
Wentz completed 10 of 13 pass attempts for 74 yards in Saturday's 23-21 preseason loss to the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Wentz led three offensive possessions, with the final one ending in a touchdown. He connected with Terry McLaurin and J.D. McKissic for gains of 16 and 15 yards on the scoring drive and competently managed the offense. Wentz also targeted rookie Jahan Dotson, though the pass fell incomplete. Perhaps most importantly, Wentz didn't turn the ball over as he prepares to be the Commanders' Week 1 starter.
Mar 9, 2022
Being traded to Washington
The Colts are slated to trade Wentz to Washington, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Schefter, the reported deal -- which can become official next week -- is in line to involve the Colts getting draft picks (including two third-rounders) back from the Commanders. Wentz thus becomes the latest signal-caller to make big news in advance of free agency, with the 29-year-old now poised to start for his third team in as many years in 2022.
Mar 2, 2022
Status with franchise TBD
As NFL free agency approaches, GM Chris Ballard acknowledged Tuesday that Wentz's future with the Colts has yet to be determined, Mike Wells of ESPN reports. "I don't have a direct answer for you," Ballard noted with regard to the QB's status with the franchise. "Jim [Irsay], Frank [Reich] and I will sit down over the next 10 days and figure out where it's going. Ultimately, we'll do what's best for the team in the short term and in the long term."
ANALYSIS
The Colts acquired Wentz from the Eagles last February, but the report notes that the veteran signal-caller's in-game decisions were a cause for concern among members of the organization at various points during the 2021 campaign. As a result, the team has yet to commit to Wentz ahead of the 2022 season, which sets up a scenario in which it's possible that the franchise may may be looking for a new starting QB for the third time in as many offseasons. Per the report, Wentz -- whose contract runs through 2024 -- is slated to earn $15 million whether he's on Indy's roster or not next season, however the team can save about $13 million if he's released by March 18.
Jan 13, 2022
GM declines to commit to 2022 starter
While speaking during his season-ending news conference, GM Chris Ballard fell short of committing to Wentz as the Colts' starting QB next season, ESPN's Mike Wells reports. "When we made the decision, after Philip [Rivers] retired...to make a move on Carson, at the time of the decision we felt good about it and I still don't regret the decision at the time," Ballard noted Thursday. "Sitting here today...I won't make a comment on who is going to be here next year and who is not going to be here next year. T
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star previously relayed that coach Frank Reich also declined to discuss the 2022 standing of Wentz or any other player on the team's roster, but given the mixed returns in the signal-caller's first season with Indianapolis, it's not too surprising that endorsements from the franchise's GM and coach didn't arrive in the wake of a disappointing loss in Week 18 that eliminated the Colts from playoff contention. Per Stephen Holder of The Athletic, Wentz is under contract through 2024, however he points out that "the detail that matters most is that 2022 is the final year of the deal containing guaranteed money." In any case, there figures to continue to be speculation regarding Wentz's future with the team in the coming months, but contract deadlines, free agency and the NFL Draft remain future moving parts that will drive the narrative.
Jan 9, 2022
Struggles in must-win game
Wentz completed 17 of 29 passes for 185 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 26-11 loss to the Jaguars. He added three rushes for 17 yards.
ANALYSIS
Wentz had a disastrous performance in a must-win game, as he also lost a fumble for two total turnovers. His 6.4 yards per attempt is a bleak enough mark standing alone, but it becomes even worse when considering that 85 of his 185 passing yards came on the Colts' final offensive possession and with the team down 26-3. Wentz has stayed away from mistakes for much of the season -- he threw only seven interceptions and lost four fumbles -- though he also surpassed 300 yards in a contest only twice.
Jan 2, 2022
Uninspiring effort in loss
Wentz completed 16 of 27 passes for 148 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Raiders. He added three carries for 10 yards.
ANALYSIS
The Colts clearly tried to keep the ball out of the air, as they tallied 26 rushing attempts as opposed to Wentz's 27 pass attempts. Even when he took to the air, Wentz was largely uninspiring as he averaged only 5.5 yards per attempt. Even his touchdown was fortunate, as he threw a ball up for grabs that bounced off of two defenders only to land in the arms of T.Y. Hilton for a 45-yard score. Wentz has now been held to under 200 passing yards in five of his last seven starts heading into a Week 18 matchup against Jacksonville.
Jan 2, 2022
Cleared to start Sunday
Per coach Frank Reich, Wentz (illness) has cleared the NFL's COVID protocols and is slated to start Sunday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, but he still needed to gain medical clearance to be available Sunday, and that has occurred. Reich notes that Wentz has had a good week of prep and is ready to go versus the Raiders, with Sam Ehlinger set to serve as his backup in Week 17.
Jan 2, 2022
Clears protocols, will start Sunday
Wentz (illness) will be available to start after receiving full clearance from a medical professional earlier in the day, Colts head coach Frank Reich told Stacey Dales of NFL Network.
ANALYSIS
Though Wentz was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday when first eligible following a five-day isolation period, the quarterback hadn't fully cleared all of the NFL's COVID-19 return-to-play protocols. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Wentz still required a check early Sunday to ensure he wasn't dealing with any lingering symptoms of the virus, and the quarterback was able to pass the final test. Though he didn't take part in any of the Colts' three official practices this week while on the list, Wentz was able to stay up to speed with the game plan while in isolation and shouldn't face any restrictions Sunday. Sam Ehlinger will serve as his backup after taking reps with the first-team offense Wednesday through Friday.
Jan 1, 2022
Activated from COVID list
Went (illness) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz is now officially back on the active roster after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, though that doesn't necessary mean he'll be available for Sunday's game against the Raiders. The 29-year-old still needs to fully clear the COVID-19 protocols in order to play, and if he does so Sunday morning he'll be able to suit up. Rookie sixth-round pick Sam Ehlinger is poised to make his first NFL start should Wentz be unable to clear the protocols. However, the expectation is Wentz will be cleared to take the field for Indianapolis, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Dec 31, 2021
Making progress, could play
Wentz (illness) has shown progress throughout the week, with Colts coach Frank Reich saying Friday that he's prepared both Wentz and Sam Ehlinger to start Sunday's game against the Raiders, Mike Chappell of FOX 59 Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
The Colts would need to move Wentz from the reserve/COVID-19 list by 4 p.m. ET Saturday to have him available for Sunday's game against the Raiders. He was initially placed on the list Tuesday, and while Reich acknowledges the QB didn't feel well early in the week, he's apparently doing better as the Week 17 game approaches. Wentz stayed involved throughout the week via Zoom meetings, hoping he'll be able to clear the return-to-play protocol ahead of Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
Dec 28, 2021
May be able to play Sunday
Wentz (illness) may have a chance to play Sunday against the Raiders following changes to the NFL's return-to-play guidelines, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The NFL and NFLPA agreed to reduce the amount of time players that test positive for COVID-19 must quarantine from 10 to five days, which lines up with new guidelines from the CDC. Per Schefter, Wentz was among 39 players who returned a positive test Tuesday, but with this change if he's asymptomatic five days after such a test, the Colts can activate him from the reserve/COVID-19 list. There's no guarantee it'll come to pass, and coach Frank Reich will get Sam Ehlinger up to speed to earn his first NFL start in the event Wentz doesn't clear the amended protocols.
Dec 28, 2021
Goes to COVID-19 list
The Colts placed Wentz (undisclosed) on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
By all accounts, Wentz remains unvaccinated, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. If the preceding is the case, Wentz won't be available Sunday for a key AFC matchup with the Raiders. Wentz would yield QB duties to backup Sam Ehlinger in the event the former can't play this weekend.
Dec 25, 2021
Tosses pair of touchdowns Saturday
Wentz was 18-for-28 passing for 225 yards and two touchdowns and notched two carries for four yards during Saturday's 22-16 win in Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Wentz isn't often asked to put up huge volume through the air in offense that rides running back Jonathan Taylor, who put up his ninth 100-yard performance in 15 games this season. Still, Wentz managed his ninth 200-yard outing through the air and ninth contest with multiple touchdowns. Everything seemed to come up 'nine' for the Colts on Saturday, as they reached 9-6 in the standings, too. Wentz' next chance to direct the Colts offense will arrive Sunday, Jan. 2 versus the Raiders.
Dec 19, 2021
Poor performance in win
Wentz completed five of 12 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown with an interception in Saturday's 27-17 win over the Patriots. He also gained 17 yards on eight carries.
ANALYSIS
The evening could have been even worse for Wentz, as a couple of his incompletions could easily have become INTs, but the Colts were able to survive his shaky effort thanks to Jonathan Taylor and a special-teams score. It was by far the least productive full game of Wentz's career, and he'll likely need to do a lot more if the Colts are going to come up with a road win in Week 16 against the Cardinals.
Dec 5, 2021
Throws touchdown in win
Wentz completed 16 of 22 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-0 win over the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Wentz put together a decent performance in a game that saw the Colts dominate on the ground, racking up 238 rushing yards and three scores. The signal-caller still got involved in the scoring, though, throwing a two-yard touchdown to Ashton Dulin just before halftime. After having three turnovers last week, Wentz also protected the ball well Sunday, sending him into the bye week on a good note.
Nov 29, 2021
Fantasy-friendly outing in loss
Wentz completed 27 of 44 passes for 306 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in the Colts' 38-31 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday. He also rushed three times for 21 yards and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Fantasy managers don't really have too much to complain about regarding Wentz's performance outside of the turnovers, but the veteran quarterback undeniably got in the way of a team win with some of his miscues. All three of Wentz's turnovers occurred in the second half, with the fumble and first interception both leading to Buccaneers touchdowns and the second pick coming on the final play of the game at Tampa Bay's two-yard line. On a more positive note, Wentz was able to notch multiple touchdown throws for the first time since Week 9, and he still boasts an impressive 21:5 TD:INT for the campaign. The 28-year-old does get a golden opportunity for atonement in a Week 13 road divisional clash against the vulnerable Texans defense.
Nov 21, 2021
Season-low yardage total in win
Wentz completed 11 of 20 passes for 106 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Colts' 41-15 win over the Bills on Sunday. He also rushed twice for 18 yards and committed a fumble recovered by Indianapolis.
ANALYSIS
With Jonathan Taylor accounting for 185 rushing yards and five total touchdowns, there was little need for Wentz to do much through the air. His one passing score actually went to Taylor in the second quarter, but the sixth-year veteran otherwise recorded just two completions apiece to the starting wideout duo of T.Y. Hilton and Michael Pittman. Wentz has now thrown for under 200 yards in three of the last five games, but a Week 12 interconference showdown with Tom Brady and the Buccaneers is likely going to require him to be much more involved.
Nov 14, 2021
Lackluster showing in win
Wentz completed 22 of 34 passes for 180 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the Colts' 23-17 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. He also netted minus-1 yard on four rushes.
ANALYSIS
Jonathan Taylor logged over 20 carries for the first time all season, which helped lead to a reduced workload for Wentz and his fellow members of the air attack. The sixth-year signal-caller did remain free of turnovers for the second straight game, helping Indianapolis even its record at .500. Wentz's touchdown-less effort was his first since Week 3, something he'll look to quickly put behind him in a Week 11 road matchup against a very tough Bills defense.
Nov 12, 2021
Ready for Sunday
Wentz (illness) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's contest against the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was deemed a limited participant at Thursday's practice due to a non-COVID-19-related illness, but he was able to log every rep Friday and avoid an injury designation entirely for Week 10 action. He'll welcome back T.Y. Hilton (concussion) for the wide receiver's third appearance of the season as the Colts take on the Colts' 26th-ranked pass defense (272 yards allowed per game).
Nov 11, 2021
Limited due to illness Thursday
Wentz was a limited participant in Thursday's practice due to a non-COVID-19-related illness, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Erickson notes that Wentz was on the field with his healthy teammates during the portion of practice that was open to the media, suggesting the Colts weren't overly concerned about him potentially infecting others. Indianapolis is seemingly hopeful that after a lighter slate of reps Thursday, Wentz will be ready to be a full participant Friday to clear up any lingering concern about his availability for Sunday's game against Jacksonville. After a bumpy outing in a Week 8 overtime loss to the Titans, Wentz bounced back effectively on short rest in a Week 9 win over the Jets last Thursday, completing 22 of 30 passes for 272 yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers as the Colts put up a season-high 45 points.

Three TDs in win
Wentz completed 22 of 30 passes for 272 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Colts' 45-30 win over the Jets on Thursday night. He also rushed four times for 13 yards.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was sharp in the high-scoring win and connected with Michael Pittman, offensive lineman Danny Pinter and Jack Doyle for his trio of scoring tosses. The sixth-year pro helped the Colts jump out to a 28-10 halftime lead with two of those touchdown passes, locking in his sixth straight multi-touchdown game. The performance was a strong bounce-back effort for Wentz following two back-breaking interceptions in Sunday's overtime loss to the Titans, and he'll look to carry over his momentum into a Week 10 home battle against the vulnerable Jaguars a week from Sunday.
Oct 31, 2021
Critical gaffes in OT loss
Wentz completed 27 of 51 passes for 231 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in the Colts' 34-31 overtime loss to the Titans on Sunday. He also rushed three times for 11 yards and fumbled once without turning it over.
ANALYSIS
Wentz came into the critical divisional clash having thrown all of one interception all season, but he broke that favorable pattern with two of the more ill-timed picks he'll likely toss all season. The two turnovers came in the closing minutes of regulation and overtime, the first giving the Titans' a walk-in, game-tying pick-six with 1:26 remaining and featuring a surprisingly careless left-handed throw from the sixth-year pro at his own two-yard line. While Wentz subsequently made up for the gaffe by leading a five-play, 75-yard drive to send the game into overtime, he doubled down on his game-changing errors with a second interception on a deep pass intended for Michael Pittman that was snagged by Keith Byard with 5:48 remaining in the extra period. The Titans would go on to kick a game-winning field goal, leaving Wentz with a serious blemish on his overall day, including from a fantasy perspective. He and the Colts will now look to regroup quickly, as a Week 9 Thursday night home date against the Jets a

Three total scores in rough weather
Wentz completed 17 of 26 pass attempts for 150 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing four times for 23 yards and another score in Sunday's 30-18 win over the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Wentz somehow wasn't credited with an interception when he shovel-passed the ball directly into Azeez Al-Shaair's arms in the second quarter, instead recording his third fumble lost of the season. Outside of that ugly play, the veteran quarterback held his own in a heavy downpour and blustering winds at Levi's Stadium. Wentz doesn't provide a ton of upside in his new digs, but he has been a surprisingly safe fantasy option with an 11:1 TD:INT ratio through seven games this season. The Colts will face a stiff test against the Titans next Sunday.
Oct 17, 2021
Tosses two scores in blowout win
Wentz completed 11 of 20 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 31-3 win over Houston. He added one rushing yard on two attempts.
ANALYSIS
Wentz opened the scoring with a 51-yard deep ball to Parris Campbell late in the first quarter and added a 28-yard touchdown to Mo Alie-Cox in the third to give the Colts a 17-3 lead, then deferred to Jonathan Taylor and the ground game as the Colts ran away with it. He has quietly amassed an efficient 9:1 TD:INT this season, including multiple touchdown passes in each of the past three games. Wentz will look to keep that streak going on the road in Week 7 against a 49ers team that will be coming out of its bye.

Looks healthier heading into Week 5
Wentz was listed as a full participant on the Colts' initial Week 5 injury report released Thursday, an indication that the team is comfortable with his health after he sprained both of his ankles in a Week 2 loss to the Rams, JJ Stankevitz of the team's official site reports. "I definitely feel much better," Wentz said. "I came out of the [Colts' Week 4 win over the Dolphins] thankfully unscathed. Felt good the next morning and the extra rest here early in the week has definitely helped as well."
ANALYSIS
The Colts' injury report featured "ankle" rather than "ankles" next to his name, suggesting that he's at least 100 percent recovered from one of the sprains. The other ankle sprain doesn't look like it will bother him much moving forward, either, even though he had a rough outing in his first game coming off the injury in the Week 3 loss to the Titans. Wentz bounced back well in Week 4 with his best performance as a Colt, completing 24 of 32 attempts for 228 yards and two touchdowns while carrying five times for eight yards. Wentz's involvement in the run game was a particularly encouraging sight, given that he didn't attempt any runs against the Titans in his first game coming off the injury. The Colts shouldn't have to adjust their game plan out of any concern for Wentz's health in Monday's contest in Baltimore.
Oct 3, 2021
Solid effort in Week 4 win
Wentz (ankles) completed 24 of 32 passes for 228 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Colts' 27-17 win over the Dolphins on Sunday. He also rushed five times for eight yards.
ANALYSIS
Playing through twin ankle sprains for the second straight week, Wentz turned in a solid, mistake-free workmanlike effort to help the Colts garner their first win of the season. The offseason arrival got plenty of help from Jonathan Taylor (16-103-1) on the ground, and he connected with a whopping 10 different pass catchers. Wentz appeared to be moving a bit better than during a Week 3 loss to the Titans, and he's now put together a fantasy-friendly 5:1 TD:INT through four games. Wentz has still to notch his first 300-yard effort as a member of the Colts, however, a matter he'll look to rectify in a Week 5 road battle against the Ravens on Monday night, Oct. 11.
Oct 3, 2021
Active for Sunday's game
Wentz (ankles) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Wentz will continue to tough it out through his ankle woes, and while the QB still isn't 100 percent, he noted heading into Week 4 action that he's "definitely in a better place than last week." With that in mind, it's possible that Wentz will be able to move around better this Sunday than he did last weekend, when he completed 19 of 37 passes for 194 yards and did not record a rushing attempt in the Colts' 25-16 loss to the Titans.
Oct 1, 2021
Listed as questionable for Week 4
Wentz (ankles) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Dolphins after being listed as limited at practice this past week.
ANALYSIS
That said, there's nothing to suggest that the QB's Week 4 status is in danger after he toughed it out through his ankle woes in the team's loss to the Titans last Sunday. Earlier this week, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin relayed that Wentz was feeling better than he did leading up to Week 3 action, so while the QB still isn't 100 percent, it's plausible that he'll be able to move around better this weekend, assuming he's active as expected.
Sep 30, 2021
Remains limited in practice
Wentz (ankles) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
While tending to sprains of both ankles, Wentz only managed one limited practice last week before playing every snap in the Colts' loss to the Titans. Though he didn't attempt a run for the first time all the season and was inaccurate in the pocket (19-for-37 for 194 yards), Wentz appears to have come out of the game in better health. He's turned in a pair of limited practices to begin Week 4, a sign that he's on track to start again Sunday in Miami.
Sep 29, 2021
To be limited at practice
Wentz (ankles) will be limited at practice Wednesday, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
ANALYSIS
That said, coach Frank Reich believes that the QB is in "a better spot" this week after toughing it out through his ankle woes in the team's Week 3 loss to the Titans. With that in mind, Reich expects Wentz's mobility to be better this week and at this stage, there's no doubt regarding the signal-caller's playing status. Brett Hundley is once again in line to serve as his top backup this weekend.
Sep 26, 2021
No touchdowns in loss
Wentz completed 19 of 37 passes for 194 yards in Sunday's 25-16 loss to the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was notably playing with two banged-up ankles, and despite seeing All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson exit early Sunday, he was able to complete the contest. Although Wentz showed grit in doing so, he didn't make much of an impact as a passer, and missed an open Michael Pittman on a would-be touchdown as well. Without a win from his first three games as a Colt, Wentz should be especially eager to taste victory in Week 4 versus the Dolphins.
Sep 26, 2021
Active for Sunday's game
Wentz (ankles) is listed active for Sunday's game against the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Per ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Stephen Holder of The Athletic, Wentz -- who injured both of his ankles during Week 2 action -- is slated to start the contest after practicing Friday with heavily-taped ankles and moving around well in the process during the media-access portion of the session. Also in uniform Sunday are Brett Hundley and Jacob Eason, either of whom the Colts could turn to if Wentz struggles or suffers an in-game setback versus Tennessee, though based on how things played out in practice this past week, Hundley could well be the next man up in the event of a Week 3 Wentz setback.
Sep 25, 2021
Expected to start Sunday
Wentz (ankles), who is questionable on the injury report against Tennessee and will be a game-time decision, is expected to start, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rapoport adds that Wentz is pushing to play and the Colts have contingency plans in place if he has a setback in warmups or during the game. The Colts activated Brett Hundley from the practice squad Saturday. Hundley would likely play if Wentz can't go since Hundley took the bulk of reps in practice this week over Jacob Eason when Wentz was sidelined. However, Wentz returned to practice Friday, and looks set to play even though he was limited in that session.
Sep 24, 2021
Not seen hindered in practice
Wentz (ankles), who is questionable on the injury report against Tennessee and will be a game-time decision, appeared to practice without any hindrance Friday, according to Zak Keefer of The Athletic. He was listed as a limited participant in practice Friday on the official injury report.
ANALYSIS
While Wentz will be a game-time decision, Keefer predicts that he will play unless he has severe swelling from Friday's workouts. If Wentz is ruled out, it's not clear if Brent Hundley or Jacob Eason will start. Head coach Frank Reich would not say Friday which backup would start if Wentz can't play.
Sep 24, 2021
Game-time decision Sunday
Wentz (ankles) was a limited participant in Friday's practice and will be a game-time decision for Sunday's game against Tennessee. Head coach Frank Reich said Wentz looked OK during the session, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
It sounds like Wentz has a real chance to play, but the team likely will need to see how his sore ankles respond after a day off. If Wentz isn't able to play, practice squad quarterback Brett Hundley could start as he has handled most of the first-team reps ahead of Jacob Eason.
Sep 24, 2021
Practicing Friday
Wentz (ankles) was present for practice Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen how the Colts list his participation level, but this development would appear to give the QB a chance to suit up Sunday against the Titans. Added clarity with regard to Wentz's Week 3 status should arrive no later than Friday afternoon, once the team's final injury report of the week is revealed.
Sep 23, 2021
Not spotted Thursday
Wentz (ankle) is not participating in Thursday's practice, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz is looking increasingly iffy for Sunday's contest against the Titans, especially with back-to-back practice absences to begin the week. The Colts have expressed optimism that Wentz, who is dealing with sprains in both ankles, might be able to display recovery progress in the near future, but he will only have one more chance to upgrade his practice activity before the team's Week 3 matchup. In Wednesday's session, practice squad quarterback Brett Hundley handled most of the first-team reps ahead of Jacob Eason.
Sep 22, 2021
Iffy for Week 3
Wentz (ankles) won't practice Wednesday, Mike Wells of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The QB noted Wednesday that both of his ankles are still sore, with the right one being of greater concern. Though there's hope that Wentz's injured ankles could respond to treatment in the next few days, coach Frank Reich suggested that the team has to approach things as though the veteran QB won't be available this weekend, per Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis. As long as Wentz is sidelined, Jacob Eason will handle added practice reps, while Brett Hundley is a candidate to be elevated from the Colts' practice squad
Sep 21, 2021
Plans to test ankle Wednesday
Wentz, who is recovering from sprains to both ankles, plans to either take part in practice or work out on the side Wednesday as a test of his health, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The workout should provide an early gauge of whether Wentz is trending toward playing or sitting out the Colts' Week 3 matchup Sunday in Tennessee. According to Garofolo, Wentz was donning a walking boot -- it's unclear on which foot -- as of Monday, but he'll ditch the protection at least temporarily Wednesday during the workout. If Wentz can't go this weekend, the Colts would likely turn the offense over to second-year signal-caller Jacob Eason, who threw an interception among his five pass attempts on Indianapolis' final drive in relief of the injured starter in last weekend's 27-24 loss to the Rams.
Sep 20, 2021
Both ankles hurting
Wentz is dealing with injuries to both ankles, not just one, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was forced out of Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Rams in the fourth quarter due to what coach Frank Reich initially described as a rolled right ankle, but it now appears that the quarterback is nursing sprains to both the left and right side. The Colts will have more information to relay about the severity of Wentz's injuries after he undergoes further testing Monday, but for now his availability for Sept. 26's contest against the Titans is uncertain. Jacob Eason completed two of five passes for 15 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception in emergency duty versus Los Angeles.
Sep 19, 2021
Week 3 status TBD
Coach Frank Reich relayed that Wentz "rolled up his ankle "pretty bad" in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Rams,Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
With regard to the QB's status for next Sunday's game against the Titans, Reich noted that at this stage it's "too early to tell. We will evaluate it as we go." Prior to being replaced by Jacob Eason, Wentz completed 20-of-31 pass attempts for 247 yards with a TD and a pick and rushed five times for 37 yards versus the Rams.
Sep 19, 2021
Exits game with ankle injury
Wentz (ankle) was replaced by Jacob Eason in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Per Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star, the issue that forced Wentz out of the contest was an ankle injury. Until further context is available, consider Wentz day-to-day in advance of next weekend's game against the Titans.
Sep 12, 2021
Pair of touchdowns in team debut
Wentz completed 25 of 38 passes for 251 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Colts' 28-16 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday. He also rushed four times for 23 yards and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
After making a particularly fast recovery from early-August foot surgery, Wentz made his effort to be ready for Week 1 worthwhile by putting together a rock-solid effort in his Colts debut. Considering his complete lack of preseason action and a host of unfamiliar offensive personnel around him, Wentz's performance certainly offers both Colts fans and fantasy managers reason for optimism. He ultimately connected with seven different targets, and the sixth-year signal-caller should have increasingly better chemistry with his pass-catching corps moving forward. Wentz will look to build on his promising debut in a Week 2 battle versus the Rams.
Sep 12, 2021
No limitations expected Week 1
Wentz isn't expected to face any restrictions in his Colts debut Sunday against the Seahawks, despite undergoing foot surgery Aug. 2, Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network report.
ANALYSIS
While the Colts are expected to proceed with caution with Wentz to whatever extent they can, head coach Frank Reich said Friday that the signal-caller won't be "limited in any way" less than six weeks after undergoing a procedure that was expected to sideline the quarterback for 5-to-12 weeks. While Reich has been pleased with Wentz's mobility in the pocket in recent practices, the Colts aren't expected to include any designed runs for the 28-year-old in their Week 1 game plan, even though he's proven to be a solid contributor in the rusher in past seasons. Instead, Reich ideally wants to lean on the Jonathan Taylor-led ground game and have Wentz to play from the pocket for most of the day, though Wentz could face more pressure than usual on passing downs with top left tackle Eric Fisher (Achilles) already ruled out for the season opener. Wentz will also be without one of his key pass catchers for at least three first three games after veteran wideout T.Y. Hilton (neck) was placed on injured reserve Sept. 2.
Sep 10, 2021
Tabbed for Week 1 start
Coach Frank Reich said Wentz will be the Colts' starting quarterback Sunday against Seattle, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, with Wentz recovering from early August foot surgery at the very front end of his initial rehab timeline (5-to-12 weeks). Superstar left guard Quenton Nelson (foot) is also expected to play after having a similar surgery the same week as Wentz, while starting left tackle Eric Fisher (Achilles) has been ruled out. Wentz will have Michael Pittman, Zach Pascal and Parris Campbell as his top receivers, with Nyheim Hines and Jonathan Taylor out of the backfield and Jack Doyle, Mo Alie-Cox and Kylen Granson at tight end. There's no clear No. 1 target, but Wentz should at least have plenty of options for shallower routes.
Sep 8, 2021
Will practice fully
Wentz (foot) is slated to practice fully Wednesday, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With that, Wentz is trending toward being available for Sunday's season opener against the Seahawks, in the absence of any setbacks. Assuming Wentz does draw the start at QB for the Colts in Week 1, he'd be backed up by Jacob Eason.
Sep 2, 2021
Returns to full-team drills
Wentz (foot) went through 11-on-11 drills at Thursday's practice, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
A brief stint on the COVID list delayed his return to full-team drills from Monday to Thursday. It shouldn't matter in terms of Week 1 availability, with all signs suggesting the Colts expect Wentz to start against the Seahawks -- a sentiment the QB echoed after Thursday's practice, per George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin. Fellow QB Sam Ehlinger (knee) was placed on injured reserve Thursday, leaving Wentz and Jacob Eason as the only signal-callers on Indy's 53-man roster. Wentz is approaching the front end of his recovery timeline (5-12 weeks) after Aug. 2 foot surgery, seemingly headed for a best-case scenario, albeit with risk of re-injury.
Sep 2, 2021
Activated from COVID-19 list
The Colts activated Wentz (foot) from the reserve/COVID list Thursday morning, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz, WR Zach Pascal and C Ryan Kelly have been removed from the list in time for Thursday's practice. Wentz had been scheduled for a full practice Monday before he was deemed a close contact of a team employee who tested positive for COVID-19. The quarterback thus seems likely to be a full practice participant Thursday, with the Colts preparing to start him Sept. 12 against Seattle -- six weeks removed from foot surgery. Jacob Eason is the backup plan if Wentz can't go, while Sam Ehlinger is likely out until October with a knee sprain.
Aug 30, 2021
Should be back soon
Wentz (foot) should be removed from the reserve/COVID-19 list after five days as long as he continues to test negative and remains asymptomatic, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The same goes for WR Zach Pascal and C Ryan Kelly, the other players placed on the list Monday afternoon. All three were close contacts with a staff member who tested positive, ruling them out of practice through Friday. That should allow Wentz to return over the weekend and give him a full week to gear up for a Sept. 12 opener against Seattle. Prior to being deemed a close contact, Wentz was scheduled for a full practice Monday -- the latest milestone in his quick recovery from foot surgery.
Aug 30, 2021
Placed on COVID list
Wentz, who is bouncing back from a foot injury, has been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.
ANALYSIS
Wentz had progressed to the point where he was expected to work in full team practice periods beginning Monday, but that's on hold for now. It remains to be seen how much time the Colts' top QB is slated to miss, but in the meantime Jacob Eason is in line to handle first-team reps in practice.
Aug 29, 2021
Slated for full practice Monday
Wentz (foot) is expected to participate in full team practice periods beginning Monday, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old returned to practice in a limited capacity last week, and he's now set to rejoin full-team work at Monday's session. Wentz has been consistently expressing optimism the past couple weeks regarding his outlook for Week 1, and that optimism appears to have been well placed as he continues to ramp up his practice work. He'll have two weeks of practice to get fully up to speed for the Sept. 12 opener against the Seahawks.
Aug 24, 2021
Practicing on consecutive days
Wentz (foot) is practicing again Tuesday, a sign he responded well to Monday's workload, per Zak Keefer of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was shown running and making cuts before Monday's session, and he then took part in 7-on-7s with the first-team offense in what was his first practice since late July. Afterward, he was optimistic about his chances to be ready for Week 1, echoing an increasingly popular sentiment. Wentz is pushing for the very front end of his initial recovery timeline of 5-to-12 weeks, coming back from Aug. 2 surgery to remove a piece of loose bone from the fifth metatarsal of his left foot.
Aug 23, 2021
Optimistic about Week 1
After handling first-team reps and participating in 7-on-7 drills during Monday's practice, Wentz (foot) indicated that he's optimistic about being ready for Week 1 action, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that the QB figures to take the occasional maintenance day in the coming weeks, with an eye toward not rushing him and avoiding setbacks, but Wentz's chances of being ready for the start of the regular season are beginning to brighten. With that in mind, following Monday's practice Keefer noted that Wentz "absolutely looked like a guy today who'll be ready to go in three weeks." If that's the case, Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger -- who had been handling first-team reps -- will transition to competing for the team's No. 2 QB job, rather than an early-season starting stint.
Aug 23, 2021
Handling first-team reps already
Wentz (foot) is handling first-team reps and participating in 7-on-7 drills at Monday's practice, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Colts posted a video of Wentz running and making cuts in his return to practice Monday, roughly three weeks after having undergone surgery to address a foot injury, but it doesn't appear that the sixth-year pro is being limited to individual drills. For Wentz to already be taking part in 7-on-7 reps seems to be an affirmation of reports that he has a fair shot to recover in time to play Week 1 against the Seahawks, on Sept. 12. Wentz was initially given a 5-to-12 week recovery timetable, but it certainly looks as though he's trending toward the lesser amount of time. Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports that the Colts will hold Wentz out from live team drills Monday, but that the starting quarterback won't have any other limitations.
Aug 23, 2021
Gets back on practice field
Wentz (foot) is handing practice reps Monday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was given a 5-to-12 week initial recovery timetable after undergoing foot surgery Aug. 2, but now roughly three weeks removed from the procedure, he can be seen running and taking sharp cuts without a boot or cast at Monday's practice. Even if the Colts end up listing Wentz as a 'limited' participant in his return to practice, to see him already handling this level of activity is extremely positive news. Zak Keefer of The Athletic also spotted Wentz taking some throwing reps. Recent reports have suggested optimism that Wentz could have a shot to suit up for Indianapolis' regular-season opener Sept. 12, and it certainly seems as though he's at least trending in the right direction for a quick return.
Aug 22, 2021
To return to practice this week
Coach Frank Reich said Wentz (foot) will be present on the practice field this week, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
The extent of Wentz' imminent activity isn't clear, but he'll be "limited" and "doing some things" Monday and beyond. As of this past Wednesday, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reported Wentz had attended six straight sessions without a boot or cast on his left foot, and walkthrough reps were on the horizon for the sixth-year pro. At the time he underwent foot surgery on Aug. 2, Wentz was given a vague recovery timeline of 5-to-12 weeks, and he seems to be trending toward the former rather than latter amount of time away from the field. In his stead, Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger have locked horns as they vie for the No. 1 spot on the QB depth chart in the event Wentz is unable to play Week 1 against the Seahawks. But if Wentz continues to progress, he could be directing the Colts offense himself on Sunday, Sept. 12.
Aug 18, 2021
Could do walkthroughs soon
Wentz (foot) has attended six straight practices and should soon begin taking walkthrough reps, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Keefer also notes that Wentz hasn't been wearing a boot or cast at practice, now more than two weeks removed from Aug. 2 surgery. The vague recovery timeline (5-to-12 weeks) creates a wide range of possibilities, but early reports suggest Wentz is doing well, with Adam Schefter of ESPN even relaying that the QB is "trending toward being available" for the Colts' season opener Sept. 12 against Seattle. In the meantime, Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger will compete to be the team's No. 2 quarterback, a role that's suddenly under the microscope with Wentz in danger of missing Week 1.
Aug 11, 2021
Could play Week 1?
Wentz (foot) is "trending toward being available" for the Colts' regular-season opener against Seattle on Sept. 12, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The quarterback had surgery Aug. 2 and is still a week away from starting his rehab process, but early signs apparently have been positive for both him and star guard Quenton Nelson, who had the same procedure for the same injury one day after Wentz. It's probably too soon to really know, but the initial recovery estimate of 5-12 weeks did leave the door open for Wentz to suit up Week 1. In the meantime, Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger are getting first-team QB reps at Colts training camp.
Aug 3, 2021
Surgery has no complications
Wentz's surgery to remove a piece of bone that had broken loose in his left foot Monday revealed no other complications, the Indianapolis Star reports. "Best-case scenario. What's that mean? It means you go in, you remove the (piece of) bone that was in there, you look around, and there was nothing else going on," said head coach Frank Reich.
ANALYSIS
Wentz will stay off his foot for two weeks before beginning rehab. The timetable for his return is unclear with a range of five to 12 weeks, but more should be known once he can begin moving on his feet.
Aug 2, 2021
Going under knife
Wentz is undergoing foot surgery Monday afternoon, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to the decision, it was reported that Wentz likely would miss Week 1 -- and potentially a few more games -- if he had surgery on his foot. Now that it's been finalized, the Colts are putting his timeline at 5-to-12 weeks, a window so large that it isn't especially useful. Wentz can be considered doubtful for the start of the regular season, with the Colts not quite ready to rule him out even though they'll be preparing another quarterback for the Week 1 start. Jacob Eason has been taking first-team reps since Wentz hurt his foot last week, while recently signed Brett Hundley is the Colts' only healthy QB who has attempted a pass in a regular-season NFL game. It'll be an interesting August sans Wentz, who will be busy rehabbing from Monday's surgery to remove bone from the fifth metatarsal of his left foot.
Aug 2, 2021
Getting surgery, out for 5-12 weeks
Wentz (foot) will undergo surgery and is expected to be out for 5-to-12 weeks, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The vague recovery timeline isn't especially helpful, but we at least know Wentz has decided on surgery, making him unlikely to play Week 1. According to coach Frank Reich, Wentz's foot injury is an old problem that may date as far back as high school but didn't need to be addressed seriously until now. Previous reports suggested Wentz would be out for at least the first week or two of the regular season if he needed surgery, but there at least seems to be widespread agreement that his foot injury isn't a season-ender. Jacob Eason has been taking most of the first-team reps since Wentz left practice last week, with Sam Ehlinger, Jalen Morton and now Brett Hundley providing depth at quarterback.
Aug 1, 2021
Opting for rehab program
Wentz (foot) won't immediately undergo surgery and will instead begin a rest and rehab program, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz recently met with foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, and surgery apparently isn't guaranteed to be necessary. The 28-year-old should be available Week 1 if the rehab program goes well, as opposed to the procedure which would likely sideline him beyond mid-September. It's uncertain whether or not the strategy will work, and Wentz could have more limited mobility even if he doesn't go under the knife. Jacob Eason led the first-team offense at Friday's practice after Wentz suffered the injury.

Could miss Week 1
Wentz (foot) would be likely to miss the start of the regular season if he had surgery, but he still hopes to avoid the procedure and suit up Week 1, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz will meet with foot specialist Robert Anderson before coming to a final decision. The quarterback felt a twinge in his foot at the end of Thursday's practice and then was held out Friday while Jacob Eason led the first-team offense. Previous reports suggested any surgery would be minor, but the latest update is saying Wentz could be out beyond mid-September even if he has surgery in early August.

Considering minor foot surgery
Wentz may have a minor surgical procedure on his injured foot, but he's still considering multiple options, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Even if he does have surgery, Rapoport adds that the quarterback wouldn't be likely to miss many games, if any at all. Still, it's a major obstacle for Wentz, an injury-prone QB coming off the worst season of his career and now leading a new team with playoff expectations. Jacob Eason filled in as the first-team quarterback at Friday's practice, while Wentz is scheduled to see foot specialist Robert Anderson in the near future, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. It maybe be a few days before Wentz and the Colts make a decision on his treatment/rehab plan.

Getting tests for foot injury
The Colts are waiting for a diagnosis after Wentz left Thursday's practice with a foot injury, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz is having additional tests after the initial evaluation was unable to provide a diagnosis. He suffered the injury at the end of Thursday's practice and was replaced by Jacob Eason for Friday's session. Wentz seems likely to miss a chunk of training camp, at the very least.
Jul 30, 2021
Will miss time
Wentz, who suffered a foot injury at the end of Thursday's practice, is "out indefinitely as he undergoes further testing," according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen how much time Wentz might miss, but next up for the Colts' QB reps is Jacob Eason, who took starter's reps Friday. Also in the team's signal-caller mix are Sam Ehlinger and Jalen Morton.

Nursing foot issue
Wentz isn't participating at Friday's practice due to a foot injury, Mike Wells of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz appeared to suffer the injury during Thursday's practice, as he didn't work with the first-team offense to close out the session, per George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin. The specifics of the injury remain unclear, but more information should be available on the issue in the near future.

Makes strong impression in workouts
Wentz has been making a strong impression with his arm strength and mobility during during voluntary offseason workouts being held at team headquarters this week, but the Colts still plan a scheme with open, easy, quick throws that key off the running game, the Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz missed the first two days of the voluntary workouts due to a non-COVID illness last week, but then returned to full strength this week. Despite his struggles last season (just 16 TDs vs. 15 interceptions), Wentz provides a big upgrade in mobility and arm strength over Philip Rivers, last year's starter. However, it's notable that initial talk from head coach Frank Reich has been about continuing an offense that spreads the ball around rather than expanding the team's downfield passing attack.
May 17, 2021
Dealing with non-COVID illness
Wentz missed Monday's practice with an illness unrelated to COVID-19, per coach Frank Reich, George Bremer of The Herald Bulletin reports.
ANALYSIS
Reich described Wentz as "under the weather" and doesn't expect this illness to linger, as he hopes Wentz will be ready to practice again in 24 hours. Unless Wentz's absence stretches well beyond expectations, this illness should have little impact on his ability to build rapport with the Colts' receivers in camp.

Dealt to Indianapolis
The Eagles have agreed to trade Wentz to the Colts in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second-round selection, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The conditional pick becomes a first-rounder if Wentz plays three-quarters of the Colts' offensive snaps in 2021. Multiple reports suggested Indianapolis was the 28-year-old QB's preferred destination, offering the opportunity to reunite with head coach Frank Reich, formerly the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia. The Colts also have a solid defense and a top-five offensive line, though their receiving corps could use some help, especially if T.Y. Hilton (free agent) isn't re-signed. Regardless, this was the best outcome Wentz could've hoped for, landing with a stable organization that appears ready to hand him a starting job. The Colts went 11-5 in 2020 with the recently retired Philip Rivers, who completed 369 of 543 passes (68.0 percent) for 4,169 yards (7.7 YPA), 24 TDs and 11 INTs.

Likely to be traded in coming days
The Eagles are expected to trade Wentz as soon as this week, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The notion of trading Wentz has picked up significant steam following the Rams' acquisition of Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford as the Eagles are reportedly looking for a similar sort of package which saw the Lions acquire two first-round picks, a third-round pick and Jared Goff in the massive deal. While it seems unlikely a team will be willing to deal that sort of compensation for Wentz, particularly after a year in which the 28-year-old led the league in interceptions despite playing 12 games, it's entirely possible the Eagles could still capitalize on what appears to an unusual market when it comes to quarterback-needy teams. The Bears and Colts are reportedly frontrunners for Wentz's services and the deal would likely leave 2020 second-round pick Jalen Hurts as the Eagles quarterback next season.
Feb 4, 2021
Discussed in trade talks
The Eagles don't necessarily plan to trade Wentz, but they have been fielding some trade calls, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
While a change of scenery would seem to make sense for both parties, the Eagles could still decide to keep Wentz if they aren't thrilled with the trade offers. New head coach Nick Sirianni didn't say much about the team's QB situation during his intro press conference, though he did seem to acknowledge the uncertainty surrounding Wentz's future. If the 28-year-old quarterback stays in Philadelphia, he'll presumably have to battle Jalen Hurts for the starting job. Potential trade fits include Indianapolis, Chicago and New England.

Taking seat Sunday
Wentz (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Sunday versus Washington.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Wentz is a healthy scratch for the Eagles' regular-season finale. Jalen Hurts will continue to direct Philadelphia's offense, with Nate Sudfeld backing him up. Wentz will enter the offseason with a cloud hanging over his head after falling apart enough to force the hand of coach Doug Pederson. Overall, Wentz had career lows in completion percentage (57), passing yards (2,620) and touchdown passes (16), while notching career highs in interceptions (15) and rushing TDs (five).

In line for DNP on Sunday
The Eagles are expected to make Wentz a healthy scratch Sunday against Washington, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Change has been in the wind since the Eagles benched Wentz in favor of rookie second-round pick Jalen Hurts back in Week 13. Wentz has served as Hurts' backup in each of the last three games, but now the team will keep the veteran in street clothes in the season finale while fellow reserve QB Nate Sudfeld takes his spot on the active roster. Garafolo noted the impending move doesn't necessarily mean the situation between Wentz and Philly isn't salvageable, and the team "wants" the quarterback to return in 2021. Having said that, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported on Sunday NFL Countdown that Wentz likely will request a trade this offseason, so Sunday's DNP could spell his last time on the Eagles' sideline.
Dec 13, 2020
Still part of team's plans
Though Wentz will back up rookie QB Jalen Hurts in Sunday's game against the Saints, the Eagles "still have every intention to keep Wentz and have him be a major part of their team," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
ANALYSIS
In the wake of Wentz's struggles this season, the 3-8-1 Eagles -- who've dropped four straight games -- elected to turn to Hurts (the No. 53 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft) in Week 14. That said, Schefter suggests the team still believes that down the road Wentz can return to his prior level of play. In any case, a decision on the signal-caller's future with the franchise is slated to arrive by the second day of the 2021 league year (in March), when Wentz's $22 million base salary for 2022 would become fully guaranteed and his $10 million 2021 roster bonus is in line to be paid out.
Dec 8, 2020
Moving into backup role
Wentz will move into a backup role for Sunday's game against the Saints after head coach Doug Pederson named Jalen Hurts as the team's starting quarterback for Week 14, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz will cede the top spot on the depth chart to the rookie after he again struggled to move the offense in last week's loss to the Packers, which dropped the Eagles to 3-8-1 on the season. The demotion suddenly leaves Wentz's future with the organization in question, an improbable development after the signal-caller inked a four-year, $128 million extension in 2019 that won't even kick in until next season. Wentz ranks last among all qualified passers this season with 15 interceptions thrown, 50 sacks taken and 10 fumbles committed.
Dec 7, 2020
May not start Week 14
Speaking on the radio Monday morning, coach Doug Pederson said he hasn't made up his mind on starting Wentz or Jalen Hurts for Week 14 against the Saints, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Pederson brought in Hurts during the third quarter of Sunday's 30-16 loss to Green Bay, leaving Wentz on the sideline for the final four drives of the game. The Eagles made a contest of it in the fourth quarter, but that was largely based on Jalen Reagor's punt-return touchdown, while the offense put up points on just one of four drives with Hurts at quarterback. Pederson won't necessarily announce it to the media once he decides on a Week 14 starter, but we should have some idea before the game kicks off at 4:25 ET on Sunday.
Dec 6, 2020
Benched at Lambeau
Wentz completed six of 15 passes for 79 yards and carried the ball three times for 15 yards before being replaced by Jalen Hurts in Sunday's 30-16 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
With the Eagles' offense producing only a field goal in the first half, Wentz found himself on the bench after another three-and-out to begin the third quarter. While Hurts completed less than 50 percent of his own attempts, he did inject some life into Philly's passing game and hit Greg Ward for the team's only offensive TD of the day. It's not clear yet who Doug Pederson will name as his starting QB for Week 14, but whoever is under center will face a very tough test against the Saints.
Dec 1, 2020
Struggles in another defeat
Wentz completed 25 of 45 passes for 215 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Monday night's 23-17 loss to the Seahawks. He also rushed five times for 42 yards.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was once again inefficient in the passing game, where no wideout had more than two catches and he was sacked another six times. The quarterback also threw his 15th interception of the season while in the red zone in the fourth quarter. On the bright side, Wentz did find tight end Dallas Goedert for a three-yard score earlier, and lucked into a touchdown on a 33-yard heave in the game's waning moments. He also added decent value on the ground, rushing for his third-most yards in a game this year. On the back of three straight losses, however, Wentz embodies the Eagles' beleaguered offense going into Week 13 versus the Packers.
Nov 29, 2020
Expected to yield snaps to Hurts on Monday
Though Wentz is in line to start Monday night's game against the Seahawks, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports that Jalen Hurts is expected to log increased playing time at quarterback in the contest.
ANALYSIS
The report also notes that "unlike previous snaps, Wentz won't be on the field" when Hurts is out there. ESPN's Tim McManus adds that Hurts has been seeing increased first-team reps at practice of late, which according to Rapoport, is expected to result in Hurts seeing his "most significant snaps yet," likely "two or three plays at a time," rather than entire series. It's possible that approach could be altered based on the flow of Monday's game, but it looks like the 3-6-1 Eagles plan to give Hurts an opportunity to provide the team's offense with a needed spark in Week 12.
Nov 23, 2020
No threat of benching yet
Coach Doug Pederson said he hasn't considered benching Wentz, according to Zach Berman of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Wentz has tossed a league-worst 14 interceptions, including two in Sunday's 22-17 loss to the Browns. It's also been nearly two months since he completed more than 60 percent of his passes in a game, with his accuracy remaining poor even as the Eagles have gotten a little bit healthier on offense. It's possible second-round pick Jalen Hurts eventually get his shot if Wentz's struggles continue, but there's no question the veteran will make another start Week 12 in a favorable matchup with the Seahawks.
Nov 22, 2020
Commits two turnovers vs. Browns
Wentz completed 21 of 35 passes for 235 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions during Sunday's 22-17 loss to the Browns. He also carried three times for an additional 10 yards.
ANALYSIS
Wentz averaged an underwhelming 6.7 yards per attempt while taking five sacks and throwing multiple interceptions for the sixth time this season. He threw touchdown passes to Richard Rodgers and Dallas Goedert to round out his fantasy line, but his team never really had a chance to win as the latter score came with just 30 seconds left on the clock. Wentz now has an unsightly TD:INT of 14:14 through 10 games and, although he's also added five rushing scores, he's had a rather disappointing season overall. Luckily for him, he'll draw a matchup next Monday night against a Seattle defense that ranks near the bottom of the league in most passing categories.
Nov 15, 2020
Fails to move offense
Wentz completed 21 of his 37 pass attempts for 208 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 10 against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Even with the return of key offensive playmakers Miles Sanders and Alshon Jeffery, Wentz struggled to get the Eagles' offense moving. The offense mustered only two touchdowns in the game, one of which came on a 55-yard run by Boston Scott. When the ball was in his hands, Wentz appeared hesitant to target receivers down the field, completing only one pass of more than 20 yards. Regularly salvaging passable stat lines by racking up rushing touchdowns -- Wentz has five touchdowns on the ground -- he was held to only four yards as a ball-carrier. Wentz and the Eagles will look to bounce back in Week 11 against the Browns.
Nov 2, 2020
Four turnovers, but gets the win
Wentz completed 15 of 27 pass attempts for 123 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions and two lost fumbles in Sunday's 23-9 win over Dallas.
ANALYSIS
This was one of Wentz's worst performances from a statistical percentage, setting a season low in yards and a season high in turnovers in one fell swoop. In fact, the offense's poor play kept an inept Dallas squad in the game far longer than they deserved to be. The 27-year-old finally got things going in the second half, putting the Eagles ahead for good with a couple of well-placed balls to the end zone. The Eagles have a bye week coming up, which will hopefully allow some of the club's injured comrades to return before another NFC East matchup against the Giants in Week 9, in which both teams will find compete to find out which team wants to lose more.
Oct 23, 2020
Leads furious comeback
Wentz completed 25 of 43 passes for 359 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the Eagles' 22-21 win over the Giants on Thursday night. He also rushed seven times for 14 yards and another score.
ANALYSIS
Down 21-10 after a Sterling Shepard touchdown reception with 6:17 remaining, the Eagles found themselves in a similar position to that of a narrow Week 6 loss to the Ravens that saw them nearly pull off a comeback from a two-possession deficit. Wentz quickly went to work, driving his team 78 yards in just four plays, a march highlighted by a 59-yard completion to rookie John Hightower. Following a subsequent Giants punt, Wentz then put what would prove to be the dagger in the collective heart of Big Blue, capping off a six-play, 71-yard drive with a perfectly thrown 18-yard scoring pass to Boston Scott down the right sideline with just 40 seconds left. Prior to his late-game heroics, the embattled quarterback had opened the scoring with a tough one-yard rushing touchdown on Philadelphia's first possession. Wentz and his fantasy managers needed this season-best performance from him after he'd significantly underdelivered on preseason expectations over the first six contests, with multiple injuries to his pass-

Nearly leads improbable comeback
Wentz completed 21 of 40 passes for 213 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Eagles' 30-28 loss to the Ravens on Sunday. He also rushed five times for 49 yards, lost a fumble and completed a pair of two-point conversion passes.
ANALYSIS
Rarely does a quarterback look as ragged as Wentz did Sunday and yet come as close as the Eagles did to sending a game they trailed by 17 and 18 points in into overtime. However, that's exactly what unfolded Sunday, with Wentz and the Eagles admirably refusing to quit and putting a legitimate scare into the Ravens until a would-be game-tying two-point conversion attempt went awry for Philadelphia. Wentz had put his team in that position by leading three 70-yard-plus scoring marches in the fourth quarter, the first two he capped with two-point conversion passes to Greg Ward and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. The first three quarters weren't so kind to Wentz, however, who was constantly harassed by Baltimore's suffocating defense and took six sacks overall. While Wentz is undeniably fighting hard under difficult circumstances, he won't come close to maximizing his fantasy potential until he gets Alshon Jeffery (foot), DeSean Jackson (hamstring), Dallas Goedert (IR-ankle) and Jalen Reagor (IR-thumb) back in the fold. He

Uneven performance
Wentz completed 20 of 35 passes for 258 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 5 against the Steelers. He also chipped in 11 rushing yards.
ANALYSIS
Wentz threw a pair of costly interceptions late in the game, but put forth a valiant comeback effort. Working with backup receivers, Wentz managed touchdown tosses of eight and four yards to record his third multi-touchdown performance of the season. He also surpassed seven yards per attempt for the first time in the campaign, helped by six passes of more than 15 yards. Wentz will face a tough Week 6 matchup against the Ravens, but may have one or both of Alshon Jeffery (ankle/illness) and DeSean Jackson (hamstring) back to aid his effort.
Oct 5, 2020
Leads team to first win
Wentz completed 18 of 28 pass attempts for 193 yards, a touchdown and an interception while rushing seven times for 37 yards and another touchdown in Sunday's 25-20 win over San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't pretty -- as Wentz was under duress behind a shoddy offensive line -- but he was able to will his team to its first victory of the season. The 27-year-old has an ugly 4:7 TD:INT ratio through four games, but he has salvaged some fantasy value with 111 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Wentz's struggles can't be solely placed on him, as he has had little help in terms of talent on the outside and a banged up offensive line, but excuses don't result in more fantasy points. Expect the signal caller to continue scrambling and improvising against a tough Steelers defense in Week 5, especially if right tackle Lane Johnson (ankle) is unable to suit up.
Sep 28, 2020
Won't be benched
Coach Doug Pederson said it would be a "knee jerk-reaction" to bench Wentz in favor of Jalen Hurts, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
The terminology is debatable, considering the Eagles now have a three-game sample of Wentz putting up poor numbers while the team struggles to score points. Of course, injuries to the offensive line and core group of skill-position players have been a big factor, with seven projected starters on offense missing time at some point this year. The Eagles won't bench Wentz before a Week 4 matchup with the similarly injury-marred 49ers, but it could become a discussion later in the season if his struggles continue and the team falls out of playoff contention. For fantasy purposes, Wentz has kept his head (barely) above water with rushing touchdowns in back-to-back games and an average of 44 pass attempts per week.
Sep 27, 2020
Picked twice, but rushing improves
Wentz was 29-for-47 passing with 225 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions during Sunday's 23-23 tie with Cincinnati. He also registered 65 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
ANALYSIS
Wentz remains uninspiring as a passer through the first three outings of his fifth NFL campaign, with a sub-60 percent completion rate and a woeful 3:6 TD:INT. His fantasy day was salvaged by way of rushing production, however, as Wentz established a new career-high in yardage via the ground. The 2016 No. 2 overall draft choice also has back-to-back games with a rushing TD for the first time in his NFL career. Taking on a San Francisco secondary Week 4 that is dealing with injuries to Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring), Richard Sherman (calf), and Emmanuel Moseley (concussion), Wentz may finally be able to get it going via the air.
Sep 20, 2020
Struggles continue in blowout loss
Wentz completed 26 of 43 pass attempts for 242 yards and two interceptions in the Eagles' 37-19 loss to the Rams on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
He added seven yards on two carries. The Eagles are now 0-2 after back-to-back losses to the Washington Football Team and Rams, and Wentz has not been productive. After being sacked eight times in Week 1, his offensive line gave up no sacks to Aaron Donald and Co., yet Wentz was unable to get anything going in this one. Philly will look to get back on track next week as the schedule lightens up in an easier matchup with Cincinnati, where Wentz could find some renewed success.
Sep 13, 2020
Struggles in loss to Washington
Wentz completed 24 of 42 pass attempts for 270 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 27-17 loss to Washington. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Wentz started strong in this one, throwing a touchdown pass to Zach Ertz on the opening drive and added another to Dallas Goedert to put his side up 17-0 in the second quarter. He struggled from that point on, however, as the ferocious Washington pass-rush resulted in eight sacks and three turnovers to turn the game on its head in the second half of this disappointing loss. Wentz has struggled in the face of pressure during his NFL career and he could be in for more of the same this season if a patchwork offensive line can't rise to the occasion. With that said, another tough task could be in store next Sunday against the Eagles.

Back to full participation
Coach Doug Pederson said Monday that Wentz (lower body) has resumed practicing in full, Daniel Gallen of The Harrisburg Patriot-News reports.
ANALYSIS
After sitting out recent practices due to a minor soft-tissue injury, Wentz is ramping up his activity level in advance of a Week 1 game at Washington. Meanwhile, the O-line is front of him has been reshuffled due to season-ending injuries to LT Andre Dillard and RG Brandon Brooks, who have been replaced by Jason Peters and a player to be named later, respectively. The Eagles' skill positions also are banged-up, with Miles Sanders (lower body), Jalen Reagor (upper body) and Alshon Jeffery (foot) all in various stages of recovery. At the very least, though, Wentz is back and working with what's available to him as the team prepares for the season opener.
Sep 1, 2020
Injury isn't 'major'
Coach Doug Pederson called Wentz's lower-body issue "nothing major," Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz has been sitting out since Sunday with what is termed a minor soft-tissue injury. The Eagles deem him day-to-day, and Pederson even added Tuesday that it's a "good week" for Wentz to rest, as he typically wouldn't suit up during preseason Week 4 under normal circumstances. The caution makes sense considering Wentz has suffered numerous serious injuries throughout his four-year career. On top of that, his starting left tackle (Andre Dillard) and starting right guard (Brandon Brooks) have suffered season-ending injuries themselves. With a banged-up receiving corps to boot, the Eagles offense may not be running on all cylinders Week 1.
Aug 30, 2020
Considered day to day
Wentz is considered day to day with a soft-tissue injury in his lower body, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
The Eagles have been cautious with minor injuries all summer, regularly holding players out of practice. However, they haven't been able to avoid the more serious issues, with starting LT Andre Dillard (biceps) and starting RG Brandon Brooks (Achilles) both set to miss the entire season. In any case, Wentz has a worrisome medical history of his own, but initial reports suggest the current ailment shouldn't threaten his availability for Week 1 at Washington. Tim McManus of ESPN.com reports that Wentz is on the field with his teammates observing Sunday's practice session.
Apr 28, 2020
Should be aggressive throwing deep
Coach Doug Pederson wants Wentz to throw deep more often in 2020, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
This is in the words of Eagles GM Howie Roseman, who recently used a first-round pick on Jalen Reagor (4.47 40), a fifth-rounder on John Hightower (4.43), a sixth-rounder on Quez Watkins (4.35) and even added Marquise Goodwin (4.27) in a pick swap. Roseman hopes the offense can add a consistent downfield element for the first time since Wentz's 2017 breakout season, with the aforementioned receivers competing for snaps that went to possession targets like Alshon Jeffery (foot) and Nelson Agholor last year. Jeffery's status on the team remains tenuous, at best, while DeSean Jackson seems to be in much better standing. It could even be argued that the team now has too many deep threats not enough possession guys in the wideout corps, but that shouldn't be much of a problem if Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert and Miles Sanders stay healthy. While it doesn't come with any guarantees, the offseason makeover at least gives Wentz a ceiling that stretches beyond his 2018-19 production.
Mar 29, 2020
Option picked up for 2020
The Eagles officially exercised Wentz's (concussion) team option for 2020 on Friday, Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
The move was merely procedural, as Wentz's 2020 salary would have risen to $31.38 million while voiding the remaining years on his extension had Philadelphia declined to exercise the option. Wentz was forced out early in the Eagles' wild-card round loss to the Seahawks on Jan. 5 with a concussion, but he cleared all five phases of the NFL's concussion protocol three days later and would have been available had Philadelphia advanced to the divisional round, per Derrick Gunn of NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Jan 5, 2020
Getting examined for head injury
Wentz is being evaluated for a head injury during Sunday's wild-card game versus the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was driven into the turf by Seahawks pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney in the first quarter, with his upper back and head taking the brunt of the punishment. Because Wentz was wobbly as he got to his feet, a neurologist alerted the Eagles to a potential head injury. If he enters the NFL's concussion protocol, Wentz will yield QB duties to veteran Josh McCown for the rest of this contest.
