Comes off IR, will play Sunday
The Colts activated Ward (concussion) off injured reserve Saturday, and he no longer has an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Ward missed Indianapolis' past five games while in concussion protocol. The veteran cornerback was designated to return from IR on Wednesday and logged a trio of practices without limitations this week to set up a return to action against Kansas City. Ward will presumably reclaim a starting role at cornerback Sunday, and he'll be lining up alongside new teammate Sauce Gardner, who Indianapolis acquired in a trade while Ward was sidelined.
Nov 21, 2025
Clears concussion protocol
Ward (concussion) has cleared the NFL's five-step concussion protocol and is eligible to play Sunday against the Chiefs, Amanda Foster of the Colts' official site reports, though he remains on injured reserve Friday.
ANALYSIS
The Colts will need to make a roster move activating Ward from injured reserve prior to Sunday's game against the Chiefs in order for him to play, but all signs point to the veteran cornerback returning for his first game action since Week 5. Ward practiced without limitations all week after having his window to resume practicing opened Wednesday. Once cleared to play, Ward will likely occupy the starting cornerback spot opposite Sauce Gardner.
Nov 19, 2025
Practices in full
Ward (concussion) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Ward has missed Indianapolis' previous five games, but coming out of the team's bye week he appears to be nearing clearance from the concussion protocol. He initially suffered the concussion during pregame warmups Week 6. Once fully healthy Ward will line up alongside new cornerback Sauce Gardner, a tandem that Indianapolis could debut as early as Sunday's road matchup against the Chiefs.
Nov 19, 2025
Designated to return
Ward (concussion) was designated to return from the injured reserve list Wednesday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward has missed the Colts' last five games due to a concussion sustained in pregame warmups, but it now appears he's nearing a return. The first-year Colt has appeared in four games this season, recording 13 total tackles and three passes defensed. Ward now has 21 days to be added to Indianapolis' active roster before reverting to IR. Once he's fully healthy, he'll likely start opposite new addition Sauce Gardner to form one of the NFL's top outside cornerback tandems.
Nov 5, 2025
Working with trainer
Ward (concussion) was spotted doing work on the field with a trainer Wednesday, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward has missed each of the Colts' last four games and remains on the injured reserve list due to a concussion, but Wednesday's workout suggests he may be nearing a return. The Middle Tennessee product must stay on IR for at least one more game, making the Week 12 matchup against the Chiefs his earliest possible return. Ward will likely be designated to return from IR in the near future if he continues to progress.
Oct 18, 2025
Placed on IR
Ward (concussion) was placed on injured reserve Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Ward suffered a concussion during warmups in Week 6 and had already been ruled out for Sunday's matchup against the Chargers. He'll now be sidelined for the next four games, ruling him out until at least a Week 12 matchup against the Chiefs. Ward's absence is a significant blow for the Colts' secondary, as he had played at least 80 percent of defensive snaps in all four of his healthy contests this season.
Oct 17, 2025
Sitting out against Chargers
Ward (concussion) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Amanda Foster of the Colts' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward has yet to clear concussion protocol since suffering a concussion in pregame warmups ahead of the Colts' Week 6 win over the Cardinals. He will need to do so to have a chance to play against the Titans in Week 8. Mekhi Blackmon could step into a starting role at outside cornerback, while the Colts' banged-up secondary could get a boost with the expected return of nickel cornerback Kenny Moore (Achilles).
Oct 15, 2025
Unable to practice Wednesday
Colts coach Shane Steichen said Ward (concussion) will not practice Wednesday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward missed Indianapolis' win over the Cardinals in Week 6 due to a concussion suffered during pre-game warmups, and he isn't yet ready to resume taking practice reps. He'll need to gain full clearance from the NFL's concussion protocol before being eligible to return to game action, making Ward's status uncertain for Sunday's road matchup against the Chargers.
Oct 12, 2025
Suffers concussion during warmups
Ward has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Cardinals due to a concussion.
ANALYSIS
Ward sustained the concussion during pregame warmups, per James Boyd of The Athletic. It's the second time Ward has been placed in the league's concussion protocol this season, and he'll need to be cleared by an independent neurologist in order to play in Week 7 against the Chargers on Sunday, Oct. 19. Mekhi Blackmon will likely draw the start at outside corner opposite Jonathan Edwards in Ward's absence.
Sep 20, 2025
Cleared for Week 3
Ward has cleared concussion protocol and no longer carries an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Ward -- who was inactive Week 2 -- had been listed as questionable after practicing fully this week, and now that he's been medically cleared, the cornerback will be available to reclaim his starting slot in the Colts' secondary Sunday. In Week 1, Ward recorded a 94 percent snap share and made six tackles in a 33-8 win over the Dolphins.
Sep 19, 2025
Questionable for Week 3
Ward (concussion) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Ward practiced in full Thursday and Friday but has one more hurdle to clear in the league's concussion protocol, according to James Boyd of The Athletic. As long as everything goes as planned, Ward seems likely to be on the field Sunday in Tennessee.
Sep 17, 2025
Back to full practice
Ward (concussion) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
After missing Week 2 with a concussion, Ward appears to have cleared the league's protocol, putting him in line to play Sunday against the Titans. Ward's return will be a dock to Calvin Ridley's projections for Week 3.
Sep 12, 2025
Ruled out against Broncos
Ward (concussion) won't play Sunday against the Broncos, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward has yet to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol and will remain ineligible to suit up until he clears the protocol. His practice participation will bear monitoring ahead of a Week 3 trip to Tennessee. Mekhi Blackmon and Johnathan Edwards are the top candidates for increased Week 2 roles in Ward's absence.
Sep 10, 2025
Doesn't practice Wednesday
Ward (concussion) was a non-participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Ward landed in concussion protocol Monday after playing every defensive snap for the Colts in their Week 1 win over Miami. It appears he hasn't yet cleared protocol, which puts his status for Sunday's Week 2 matchup versus Denver in peril. If Ward isn't able to suit up for that game, Mekhi Blackmon or Johnathan Edwards may be asked to slide into a starting role.
Sep 8, 2025
In concussion protocol
Head coach Shane Steichen told reporters that Ward is in concussion protocol after displaying symptoms Monday morning, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite being in concussion protocol Monday morning, Ward played 100 percent of the Colts' defensive snaps in Week 1, recording six total tackles. The veteran corner signed a three-year, $60 million deal with Indianapolis this past offseason after spending the last three years of his career with the 49ers, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2023. His practice participation throughout the week will likely serve as the best indication of whether he can suit up for a Week 2 matchup against the Broncos on Sunday.
Sep 8, 2025
Six tackles in Colts debut
Ward started at cornerback opposite Xavier Howard and had six total tackles in Sunday's win over Miami.
ANALYSIS
Ward played on 31 of the defense's 47 snaps as he looked at full speed after missing time in the preseason due to a leg injury. The veteran will give Indy needed stability in the secondary.
Aug 16, 2025
Over leg injury
Ward (leg) played in Saturday's preseason game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
It was Ward's first action of the preseason, but he failed to log any stats across 12 defensive snaps. Ward signed a three-year deal with the Colts back in March and is expected to operate as Indy's top cover corner this season.
Aug 5, 2025
Back at practice Tuesday
Ward (leg) participated during Tuesday's training camp practice, Jake Arthur of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a positive development for Ward after he sat out some activities earlier in the week with tightness in his leg. It's still not clear whether he'll be available for Thursday's preseason game at Baltimore, but the veteran might sit that contest out even if he is fully healthy. He projects to start on the boundary for Indianapolis in 2025.
Aug 3, 2025
Dealing with leg injury
Ward was held out of Sunday's training camp practice due to tightness in his leg, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward's absence from Sunday's session is likely precautionary, but he is in jeopardy of missing practices over the coming days. With Ward, Jaylon Jones (hamstring) and JuJu Brents (hamstring) all working through injuries, Samuel Womack and Justin Walley are the top candidates to work with the first-team defense at outside corner in practice and potentially in Thursday's preseason opener against the Ravens. Ward signed a three-year, $60 million contract with the Colts in March after spending the last three seasons with the 49ers.
Mar 10, 2025
Links up with Colts
Ward signed a three-year, $60 million deal with the Colts on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward's new deal with Indianapolis makes him one of the NFL's highest-paid cornerbacks, tying for the seventh-highest annual salary at $20 million. The Middle Tennessee product dealt with hamstring, knee and personal issues throughout the 2024 season, forcing him to miss five games. However, he was one of the best corners in the league during San Francisco's 2024 campaign, recording 72 total tackles and a league-leading 23 passes defended, including five interceptions, across 17 regular-season appearances. Ward is expected to serve as the Colts' top outside cornerback in 2025, aiming to strengthen a secondary that allowed 7.2 yards per pass attempt last season -- tied for the third-worst mark in the NFL.
Jan 8, 2025
Zero INTs during 2024 season
Ward finished the 2024 season with 54 tackles (38 solo) and seven pass breakups across 12 games.
ANALYSIS
After logging a league-leading 23 pass breakups, including five interceptions, during the 2023 campaign, Ward played five fewer games in 2024 and failed to record a single interception. He missed time with hamstring, knee and personal issues. Ward was a second-team All-Pro selection last season and is now slated for unrestricted free agency in March while coming off what most would consider a down year. Ward will turn 29 years old in May. His ordinary season and missed time will likely cost him some money on his next contract.
Dec 29, 2024
Won't suit up Monday
Ward (personal) has been ruled out for Monday's Week 17 game against Detroit, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward first appeared on the injury report Saturday when he didn't practice due to a personal matter, and he's now been ruled out for Monday Night Football. Per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suggested Saturday that the cause of Ward's absence is positive rather than negative. Isaac Yiadom could start Monday in Ward's stead.
Dec 28, 2024
Questionable to play Monday
Ward (personal) is listed as questionable for Monday's game against Detroit, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward missed three games earlier in the season while attending to a personal matter. He's played in the 49ers' last four games, and over that span he has accumulated 16 tackles (nine solo) and two pass defenses. Isaac Yiadom would likely serve as the 49ers' second starting outside corner opposite Renardo Green if Ward is unable to play Monday.
Dec 9, 2024
Fives tackles against Bears
Ward finished Sunday's 38-13 win over Chicago with five tackles (four solo).
ANALYSIS
Ward tied Talanoa Hufanga and Malik Mustapha (chest) for the second-most tackles on the 49ers on Sunday behind De'Vondre Campbell (seven). Ward has registered 10 tackles (six solo) in his two games back since his three-game absence while he was away from the team attending to a personal matter.
Dec 3, 2024
Plays every snap in return
Ward recorded five tackles (two solo) during Sunday's 35-10 loss at Buffalo.
ANALYSIS
Ward had sat out the 49ers' previous three games due to a serious personal matter, but he resumed his regular every-down role Sunday. He figures as San Francisco's top cornerback for the rest of the season as long as he's available.
Nov 27, 2024
Returns to practice Wednesdy
Ward (personal) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward was away from the 49ers for the past four games while mourning the loss of his one-year-old daughter. He returned to practice Wednesday, and it appears the seventh-year corner should be available for Sunday's game against the Bills.
Nov 22, 2024
Won't return in Week 12
Ward (personal) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Packers, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward spent the last three weeks away from the team mourning the loss of his one-year-old daughter and is now set to miss Sunday's matchup in Green Bay as he eases back into action, per David Lombardi of SFStandard.com. While Ward remains sidelined in Week 12, San Francisco's top outside cornerbacks will likely be Isaac Yiadom and Renardo Green.
Nov 18, 2024
Back with team Monday
Ward (personal) returned to the 49ers on Monday, David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard reports.
ANALYSIS
The starting cornerback missed the last two games following the recent passing of his one-year-old daughter. Ward's return should put him on track to play in Week 12 against the Packers. The seventh-year pro has 35 tackles (26 solo) and five passes defensed in seven games this season.
Nov 15, 2024
Won't play Week 11
Ward (personal) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward will miss a second straight game due to the recent passing of his one-year-old daughter. It's unclear how long he'll be away from the team, but Ward's next chance at playing will be Week 12 against the Packers on Sunday, Nov. 24. In Ward's absence, Renardo Green will step up as the second starting corner alongside Isaac Yiadom.
Nov 13, 2024
Doesn't practice Wednesday
Ward (personal) was listed as a DNP on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Ward remains away from the team due to a serious personal matter, and it's unclear whether he'll return for Week 11 against the Seahawks. If Ward is sidelined for Sunday's game, Renardo Green would likely start at corner for a second straight game alongside Isaac Yiadom.
Nov 8, 2024
Out for Sunday
Ward (personal) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Buccaneers, David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward has stepped away from the team as he continues to deal with a serious personal situation, so missing Sunday's contest comes as no surprise. Rock Ya-Sin and Darrell Luter will likely see increased work in the 49ers' secondary until Ward returns.
Nov 7, 2024
No timeline to return
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that a return date for Ward (personal) has not been discussed, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward has been away from the team since its game versus the Cowboys in Week 8 due to a serious personal matter, and the 49ers are showing him grace as he takes time to work through it. He'll decide for himself if and when to return to football activities this season.
Oct 16, 2024
Practices in full Wednesday
Ward (knee) was a full participant in practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Ward was also seen practicing in Monday's bonus practice, so it appears the cornerback is back to near-full health after missing Week 6 due to a knee injury. He's had a good amount of time to recover because that game against the Seahawks was on a Thursday, and at this point it seems Ward will be ready to return Sunday against Kansas City. In the five contests in which he's played, Ward has tallied 22 tackles (17 solo) and four pass defenses.
Oct 14, 2024
Returns to practice
Ward (knee) was spotted practicing Monday, David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward was considered day-to-day after missing the 49ers' Week 6 win over the Seahawks with a knee injury. Monday's return to practice is a sign that Ward is trending in the right direction, and he'll likely serve as San Francisco's top cornerback in Week 7 if he can play through the injury.
Oct 11, 2024
Considered day-to-day
Ward is considered day-to-day with a knee injury, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward didn't play in the San Francisco's Week 6 win over the Seahawks after sustaining a knee injury the week prior, but it appears a return to the field could be on the horizon. The seventh-year pro's participation in practice next week will provide the best indication of his potential availability in Week 7, when the 49ers host the Chiefs.
Oct 10, 2024
No go for TNF
Ward (knee) is inactive for Thursday's matchup with the Seahawks on Thursday Night Football, Lindsey Pallares of the 49ers' official website reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward has been dealing with a bruised knee at practice this week after the team's 24-23 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday. The cornerback will now be forced to sit out Week 6 and as a result, Rock Ya-Sin and Darrell Luter will likely see an increase in workload in San Francisco's secondary. Ward will look to take advantage of an extended break in order to be ready to go for the 49ers' contest against Kansas City in Week 7 on Oct. 20.
Oct 9, 2024
Iffy for Thursday
Ward (knee) is questionable for Thursday's game against the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Ward saw his typical workload in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, so it's not clear when he suffered the injury, although he did deal with knee issues earlier in the season. After logging a DNP on Monday, the veteran corner was able to log back-to-back limited practice sessions, likely putting him on the right side of questionable for TNF. However, clarity likely won't come until San Francisco releases its inactive list 90 minutes before kickoff.
Oct 8, 2024
Upgrades practice participation
Ward (knee) was a limited participant in Tuesday's practice session, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward bruised his knee during the 49ers' 24-23 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday. He was listed as a DNP in Monday's estimated practice report, but he managed to see the field during Tuesday's session. Barring any setbacks, Ward should be good to go for Thursday's NFC West clash against Seattle.
Oct 7, 2024
Considered DNP Monday
Ward (knee) was listed as a non-participant on Monday's estimated injury report, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward recorded four total tackles (three solo) in Sunday's 24-23 loss to the Cardinals, potentially leaving the contest a little worse for wear. The cornerback dealt with a knee issue earlier this season and he'll look to return to practice ahead of Thursday's matchup with the Seahawks.
Sep 23, 2024
Leads team in tackles
Ward logged nine tackles (six solo) and a pass deflection during San Francisco's 27-24 loss to the Rams on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Ward was dealing with hamstring and knee injuries throughout last week but ended up having a big game regardless as he led the 49ers in tackles. Throughout the first three games of the season, the 28-year-old has now amassed 13 tackles (nine solo) and three pass deflections.
Sep 22, 2024
Good to go for Week 3
Ward (hamstring/knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Rams, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward appeared on the 49ers' injury report Thursday with hamstring and knee injuries. He was tagged as questionable after being limited in Friday's practice, but the 28-year-old corner will suit up for Sunday's contest. Ward has four tackles (three solo) and two passes defended through the first two games of the regular season.
Sep 20, 2024
Deemed questionable for Week 3
Ward (hamstring/knee) is questionable to suit up against the Rams on Sunday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward popped up on the injury report after not practicing Thursday, and he's listed as dealing with both a hamstring and knee issue. The cornerback was able to logged a limited practice session Friday, so he still has a chance of suiting up against the Rams on Sunday. If Ward is ultimately unable to play, Rock Ya-Sin or Renardo Green could be asked to start in his stead.
Sep 19, 2024
DNP due to hamstring injury
Ward (hamstring) did not participate in Thursday's practice session, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report, but the fact that the hamstring injury prevented him from practicing Thursday puts him in jeopardy of not suiting up against the Rams in Week 3. He'll have to practice in at least a limited capacity Friday in order to have a shot at playing Sunday. If Ward is sidelined, then Deommodore Lenoir would be the top candidate to start at corner opposite Isaac Yiadom.
Jul 23, 2024
Ready to go for training camp
Ward (groin) has been cleared to participate for the start of training camp Tuesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward underwent core-muscle surgery in February, which forced him to miss OTAs and minicamp. Ward appears to have recovered enough to return for the start of training camp, though he'll likely be eased back into practice, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. Ward finished the 2023 regular season with a career-high five interceptions, along with 72 tackles (56 solo), 23 passes defended, one forced fumble and one touchdown across 17 regular-season games.
Mar 25, 2024
Will be ready for camp
Ward (groin) underwent core surgery in February, but he should be ready for training camp according to general manager, John Lynch, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward had previously announced the surgery via his Instagram in February, but details of what the surgery was for and recovery time were absent. His ability to be ready to take the field for camp should have him suiting up Week 1 in 2024, assuming the 27-year-old doesn't suffer any setbacks in his recovery.
Feb 22, 2024
Undergoes surgey
Ward underwent successful surgery for an unknown injury after the Super Bowl, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Ward announced the news via his Instagram, according to Lombardi, but he did not disclose what kind of procedure he underwent or why. It's also unclear if the 27-year-old will be available at the beginning of any of San Francisco's offseason programs. However, it is likely safe to assume he played at least part of the season while dealing with the injury, making it likely the injury wasn't significant enough for Ward to need significant time to recover.
Feb 13, 2024
Doubles career INT total in 2023
Ward finished with 72 tackles (56 solo), 23 passes defended, five interceptions and the first defensive touchdown of his career across 17 starts with the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Ward's five interceptions in 2023 matched his cumulative total from his first five seasons in the league. The former Kansas City corner has adapted well to being the No. 1 option for a team that lacked reliable defensive backs prior to his arrival. Ward was forced to watch the aforementioned Chiefs win Super Bowl LVIII, which should have the starter motivated as he enters the final year of a contract signed with San Francisco in 2022.
Jan 1, 2024
Snags INT in win
Ward had four tackles (three solo) and an interception in Sunday's 27-10 win over the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
Ward picked off Sam Howell on the second play of the fourth quarter on a pass intended for Terry McLaurin that stopped the Commanders' red zone drive in its tracks. Ward has now accumulated three picks in his last three games and is up to a career-high five interceptions on the season.
Dec 19, 2023
Records two picks in win
Ward recorded three tackles (two solo), two pass deflections and two interceptions in San Francisco's 45-29 win over the Cardinals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Ward had his best outing of the season as he managed to pick off Kyler Murray twice Sunday. The 27-year-old has now logged four interceptions and 60 tackles (46 solo) through 14 games.
Dec 17, 2023
Will suit up Week 15
Ward (groin) is officially active for Sunday's clash against Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Ward left last week's win over Seattle very early due to a groin injury and wasn't able to practice until Friday, when he was a limited participant. However, the cornerback will be able to take the field Sunday, avoiding missing his first game since 2021. Ward will likely take on his usual near-every-down role against the Cardinals.
Dec 15, 2023
Questionable for Week 15
Ward (groin) is questionable to play against Arizona on Sunday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward played just four defensive snaps last Sunday against Seattle before leaving with a groin injury. He missed the first two days of practice this week but logged a limited session Friday, giving himself a chance to suit up against the Cardinals. If he needs to sit out, however, Isaiah Oliver could again see an uptick of work in San Francisco's secondary.
Dec 13, 2023
Stays sidelined
Ward (groin) will not practice Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward went down early against the Seahawks and was not able to return to the game. However, it was reported Monday that head coach Kyle Shanahan believed the 27-year-old had a chance to suit up Week 15 against the Cardinals. So, although a DNP to kick off the practice week isn't the best start, his status for Thursday and Friday's sessions will likely provide better clarity on whether Ward will be able to play.
Dec 11, 2023
May play Week 15
Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday that Ward (groin) has a chance to practice in the week leading up to their Week 15 matchup against the Cardinals, Lindsey Pallares of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward left the first quarter of Sunday's 28-16 win over the Seahawks with a groin injury and did not return. He has 57 tackles (44 solo), two interceptions and a forced fumble in 13 games this season as the starting cornerback alongside Deommodore Lenoir. Ward's practice participation will be something to monitor over the course of the week, and if he's unable to suit up against Arizona, Ambry Thomas -- who played 54 defensive snaps and registered four tackles -- will likely fill in as the starter with Lenoir.
Dec 10, 2023
Exits game with groin injury
Ward (groin) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Ward left midway through the first quarter without recording a stat. Samuel Womack has entered into the game as the nickel cornerback in Ward's absence.
Oct 24, 2023
Picks off pass in loss to Minnesota
Ward recorded five tackles (four solo) and one interception in the 49ers' Week 7 loss to the Vikings Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Through seven starts, Ward has played 92 percent of the defensive snaps and has recorded 31 tackles (25 solo), seven pass breakups, two interceptions and one forced fumble. Ward has a Week 8 date lined up with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
Oct 6, 2023
Cleared to play in Week 5
Ward (heel) does not have an injury designation for Sunday's home game against Dallas, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward began the week with a DNP before logging a limited session Thursday and full practice participation Friday. That progression was enough for San Francisco to clear him to play in an NFC clash versus the Cowboys on Sunday. Ward has tallied 19 tackles (15 solo) and an interception through four games this season.
Oct 5, 2023
Practices Thursday
Ward (heel) was a limited participant in practice Thursday after missing Wednesday's session, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The cornerback has started all four games this season and recorded 19 tackles, four passes defended and an interception. Ward has started all 21 contests since signing with the 49ers before the 2022 campaign.
Oct 4, 2023
Misses practice Wednesday
Ward (heel) was a non-participant at the 49ers' practice Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward popped up on the injury report with a heel injury Wednesday, sitting out the team's first practice session of the week. The cornerback will have two more chances to be back on the practice field prior to Sunday's matchup with Dallas.
Sep 19, 2023
Logs 10 tackles
Ward recorded 10 tackles (eight solo) and a pass deflection during the 49ers' 30-23 win against the Rams on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Ward's 10 tackles were good for third most on the team, with only Fred Warner (11) and Dre Greenlaw (12) finishing with more. The 27-year-old has now logged 13 tackles (10 solo) and two pass deflections across two games and will look to add to those totals against the Giants on Thursday night.
Sep 10, 2023
Ready to play
Ward (heel) is active Sunday against the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Ward popped up on the injury report Thursday, but he's good to go for Week 1, which is good news for the 49ers' secondary. He should start at corner opposite Deommodore Lenoir.
Sep 8, 2023
Listed questionable
Ward (heel) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Steelers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward was added to the injury report Thursday and didn't practice. Mid-week additions are rarely ever good news, but Ward was officially deemed questionable to face Diontae Johnson and George Pickens in the Week 1 opener.
Sep 7, 2023
Nursing heel injury
Ward (heel) did not practice Thursday ahead of Sunday's game at the Steelers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Any time Ward misses would represent a major blow to what should otherwise be expected to be one of the top defensive units in the NFL in 2023. If he is forced to sit out in Week 1, it will likely mean increased playing time for 2022 fifth-rounder Samuel Womack and increased fantasy projections for Kenny Pickett, George Pickens and Diontae Johnson.
Aug 8, 2023
Back at practice
Ward (groin) was a full participant in practice Tuesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The cornerback was limited with what appeared to be a minor injury at the start of training camp. Ward inked a three-year deal with the 49ers before the 2022 season and went on to record 87 tackles, 11 passes defended and an interception in 17 starts. The sixth-year player is slotted into his starting role at right corner for 2023.

Dealing with injury
Ward has been limited during training camp as he tends to a groin injury, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's not clear when Ward suffered the injury or the severity of it, but as long as he remains off the PUP list and IR, it's likely minor. The 27-year-old set career highs in tackles and passes defended last season, his first in San Francisco, after four seasons with Kansas City, and should hold down one of the starting cornerback spots when healthy.

Restructures deal with 49ers
Ward agreed Tuesday to restructure his contract with San Francisco, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward converted $12.5 million of his salary into a signing bonus while adding three void years to his current deal. The move creates roughly $10 million in cap space for the 49ers just ahead of the official new league year. The 26-year-old's inaugural campaign with San Francisco last season was successful, as he set a new career-high in tackles.
Feb 7, 2023
Plays well with new club
Ward finished the 2022 regular season with 87 tackles (59 solo) and an interception across 17 games.
ANALYSIS
Ward had a successful first season with his new club after leaving Kansas City last offseason to serve as San Francisco's top corner. The 26-year-old finished with a career-high 87 combined tackles, but he did suffer lapses in coverage at times. Ward will enter the second year of his three-year contract with the 49ers in 2023, likely serving as the team's top corner once again.
Dec 24, 2022
Active Saturday
Ward (concucssion) has been cleared to play in Saturday's game against the Commanders, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward is returning from concussion protocol after getting hurt in Week 15. He should take on his full workload assuming any setbacks are avoided. If that does happen, the likes of Deommodore Lenoir, Samuel Womack and Ambry Thomas would be candidates to fill in at cornerback.
Dec 22, 2022
Could play in Week 16
Ward (concussion) is considered questionable to play Saturday against the Commanders, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward sustained a concussion during San Francisco's Week 15 win over Seattle on Thursday Night Football, and he was limited in each practice during Week 16 prep. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan also said Thursday that the cornerback is in the "last steps" of the concussion protocol, so official word on his availability will likely come when the team announces its inactives/actives 90 minutes prior to Saturday's 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff. If Ward is sidelined, then San Francisco could be left with three available cornerbacks between Deommodore Lenoir, Samuel Womack and Ambry Thomas (ankle), the latter of whom is also considered questionable to play.
Dec 16, 2022
Lands in concussion protocol
Ward suffered a concussion during Thursday's 21-13 win over Seahawks, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward was formally cleared to return to Thursday's contest after being evaluated for a head injury, but he remained on the sideline with his helmet off and has since been diagnosed with a concussion. The starting cornerback will have extra time to clear protocols before the 49ers return to action on Christmas Eve against the Commanders, but if he's forced to miss any time, Janoris Jenkins and Ambry Thomas (ankle) could emerge as starting candidates opposite Deommodore Lenoir.
Dec 15, 2022
Suffers head injury
Ward exited Thursday's 21-13 win over the Seahawks due to a head injury, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward exited the game while being evaluated for a concussion. He was formally cleared to return but remained on the sideline with his helmet in his hand. While it's positive he avoided a concussion diagnosis, Ward's practice status will be worth monitoring heading into a Week 16 matchup against the Commanders.
Nov 22, 2022
Leading tackler in MNF
Ward recorded 10 tackles (nine solo) during Monday's 38-10 victory versus the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Ward logged 10 stops for the second time this season during this wire-to-wire win for San Francisco. The 26-year-old did see a slight dip in his usual playing time (85 percent of defensive snaps) after he was temporarily forced out with a groin injury in the first half. Ward has served as the most consistent member of the 49ers' secondary through his first 10 games with the team, recording 56 tackles (40 solo), nine passes defended and one interception, and he should continue to play a prominent role against the Saints' limited passing offense Week 12.
Nov 21, 2022
Returns Monday night
Ward (groin) returned during the first half of Monday's game against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward was able to come back in after exiting with a groin injury in the first quarter. The 26-year-old recorded 46 tackles, nine passes defended and an interception over the first nine games of the season, and he should step back in opposite starting cornerback Deommodore Lenoir for the remainder of this contest.
Nov 21, 2022
Back in action
Ward (groin) has returned to Monday's game against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward exited the game early in the first quarter, but he's feeling well enough to get back on the field. His return is good news for the 49ers secondary.
Nov 21, 2022
Leaves with injury
Ward has exited Monday's game against the Cardinals with a groin injury.
ANALYSIS
Ward suffered the injury in the first quarter and is questionable to return. If he is unable to get back in the game, it'll certainly be a blow to the 49er secondary. Ambry Thomas and Samuel Womack will be candidates for an uptick in snaps while Ward is out.
Oct 25, 2022
Leads team in stops Sunday
Ward recorded 10 tackles (eight solo) during Sunday's 44-23 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Ward not only lead his team with 10 stops Sunday against Kansas City, but he also tied his previous career-high that he set in Week 15 versus the Chargers a year ago. The 26-year-old cornerback played all but one defensive snap in Week 7 against the Chiefs, and he'll look to build off this strong performance when the team is hosted by the Rams on Sunday.
Oct 23, 2022
Will play Sunday
Ward (groin) is active Sunday against the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Ward was unable to practice Wednesday or Thursday after suffering the injury in Week 6 against Atlanta. His ability to suit up Sunday against the Chiefs will be a boon to the 49ers secondary, as they take on Kansas City's dangerous passing attack.
Oct 21, 2022
Questionable for Sunday
Ward (groin) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward injured his groin last Sunday against Atlanta and began this week by missing practice Wednesday and Thursday before logging a limited session Friday. That gives him a chance to play Sunday, which would be a big boost to a San Francisco secondary that will be faced with the daunting task of slowing down Patrick Mahomes and the rest of Kansas City's potent passing attack. Ward played his first four NFL campaigns with the Chiefs before joining San Francisco prior to this season.
Oct 20, 2022
Doesn't practice Wednesday
Ward (groin) was a non-participant during the 49ers' practice Wednesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward sustained a groin injury during Sunday's loss to the Falcons that sidelined him for the remainder of this contest. Now, unless he can increase his activity during practice Thursday or Friday, it appears this issue may keep him sidelined Week 7. Ward played almost every defensive snap for San Francisco over the first five games of the season, and, with fellow starter Emmanuel Moseley (knee) out for the season, the 49ers will need as many healthy cornerbacks as possible for Sunday's game against the Chiefs' potent passing offense.
Oct 16, 2022
Won't return Sunday
Ward (groin) was downgraded to out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Ward logged 26 tackles and played 300 defensive snaps over the first five games of the season, and he recorded two stops before exiting against Atlanta. While the exact nature and severity of this injury are still unclear, the starting cornerback's next opportunity to play will come Sunday, Oct. 23 versus Kansas City.
Oct 16, 2022
Leaves with injury
Ward (groin) has exited Sunday's contest with the Falcons, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward's current absence is definitely a blow to the 49ers secondary, which was already without Jimmie Ward due to a broken hand. While he is out of the game, Samuel Womack and Dontae Johnson will likely be looking at an uptick in snaps.
Sep 7, 2022
Absent from injury report
Ward (groin) was not listed on San Francisco's injury report Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward returned to practice this past Sunday after sitting out with a groin injury over the previous couple of weeks, though he now appears to officially be passed this issue. The 26-year-old played a prominent role in the Chiefs secondary over the past four seasons, including 67 tackles, 10 passes defended and two interceptions over 13 games in 2021. Ward should now step into a starting role at cornerback opposite Emmanuel Moseley during the 49ers' Week 1 matchup against Chicago on Sunday.
Aug 28, 2022
Returns to practice Sunday
Ward (groin) said he feels good and will practice Sunday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward had been sidelined for a couple of weeks due to a groin strain, but as expected, he should be nearing 100 percent as the regular season draws near. The cornerback signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the 49ers this offseason and is expected to be the starter opposite of Emmanuel Moseley in Week 1.
Aug 26, 2022
Should return to practice soon
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Ward (groin) should return to practice this week, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the 49ers this offseason and is expected to be the starting cornerback opposite of Emmanuel Moseley to start the regular season, but the newcomer has been sidelined for the last couple weeks due to a groin strain. Regardless, he appears to be returning to full strength ahead of the regular season and should be available for Week 1 against the Bears.
Aug 13, 2022
Out at least a week
Ward (groin) will miss the next week at minimum with a soft tissue injury, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Ward and fellow starting cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (hamstring) are currently out of action, as well as backup Jason Verrett (knee), but could return in time for the final preseason game August 25th against the Texans. In the meantime, Dontae Johnson, Ambry Thomas and Deommodore Lenoir got the bulk of work at the position during the 49ers' first preseason game against the Packers, and will likely do so again against the Vikings next Saturday.
Aug 10, 2022
Out a couple of weeks
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Ward is dealing with an undisclosed muscle strain and will be sidelined for a couple of weeks, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the 49ers this offseason and is expected to be the starting cornerback opposite of Emmanuel Moseley (hamstring) to start the regular season. However, both of those defensive backs, along with Jason Verrett (knee), are currently sidelined, so San Francisco may need to add some emergency depth before heading into preseason action.
Mar 15, 2022
Headed to San Francisco
Ward intends to sign a three-year deal worth up $42 million with the San Francisco 49ers once the new league year starts March 16, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward spent the first four seasons of his career in Kansas City, and he had proven to be a valuable member of the team's secondary. He racked up 67 tackles, 10 passes defended, and tallied two interceptions across 13 games in 2021 and will now join Ambry Thomas and Emmanuel Moseley to form a strong secondary in San Francisco.
Jan 14, 2022
More around ball in 2021
Ward tallied 67 tackles (48 solo) and two interceptions over 13 games during the 2021 regular season.
ANALYSIS
Although Ward's snap count dipped for a second consecutive season due, in part, to four missed games, he saw an uptick from 51 to 67 in the tackles department and recorded a pair of interceptions after not recording any a season ago. He will be an unrestricted free agent following the season, so it remains to be seen whether to not Ward will remain a Chief going into 2022.
Dec 23, 2021
Activated off reserve/COVID-19 list
Ward was activated from the COVID list Thursday, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, but he's already cleared league protocols and looks ready to go for Sunday against the Steelers. The cornerback is coming off of a season-high 10 tackles in Week 15 versus the Chargers and is now up to 51 tackles on the year to go with eight pass deflections and an interception.
Dec 20, 2021
Lands on COVID-19 list
Ward (undisclosed) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward was a late addition to the injury report ahead of Thursday's contest against the Chargers with an illness. However, he was able to suit up for the game and notched a season-high 10 tackles. Now, the cornerback has to clear the league's health and safety protocols if he wants to play in Week 16. If he is unable to suit up, then Mike Hughes would likely see increased snaps in the slot.
Dec 20, 2021
Season-high 10 tackles Thursday
Ward (illness) totaled 10 tackles (seven solo) and two passes defensed in Thursday's 34-28 overtime win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
The illness Ward picked up shortly before the game clearly didn't affect his performance, as he notched a new season high in tackles. He's up to 51 tackles (38 solo) in 10 games this season, exactly matching his tackling output from 14 contests last year. Ward has added eight passes defensed in 2021, with six of those coming in his last four games.
Dec 16, 2021
Active against Chargers
Ward (illness) is active for Thursday's game against Kansas City, Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward was added to the injury ahead of the game Thursday, though he won't be sidelined for the divisional matchup. He's served regularly as an outside corner for Kansas City this season, and with L'Jarius Sneed (personal) sidelined, Ward will take on an even more important role in the secondary
Dec 16, 2021
Late addition to injury report
Ward is questionable for Thursday's game against the Chargers due to an illness.
ANALYSIS
Ward wasn't previously present on the injury report for Thursday, but his availability is now in question due to the ailment. Deandre Baker should see more run at cornerback should Ward be unable to play.
Nov 17, 2021
Off injured list
Ward (illness) isn't listed on the Chiefs' injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Ward was feeling ill during the Chiefs blowout win over the Raiders in Week 10 and exited the game early. The cornerback is reportedly feeling better and will be able to play Sunday against the Cowboys since the illness is going away. Expect Ward to see a large role against a high-powered Cowboys offense in Week 11.
Nov 14, 2021
Feeling ill in Week 10
Ward (illness) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
With the Chiefs pulling away in the second half, they can afford to take it easy with the ailing Ward. There has been no indication at this point that his illness is related to COVID-19.
Nov 1, 2021
Ready to play Monday
Ward (foot) is active for Monday's game against the Giants, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward was considered questionable due to the foot injury and has been cleared to take the field Monday. The 25-year-old returned from a four-game absence last week and had two solo tackles while playing 63 percent of the defensive snaps.
Oct 30, 2021
Questionable for Monday
Ward (foot) is questionable for Monday night's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Ward practiced in full Thursday before logging limited appearances Friday and Saturday. He has struggled with injuries this season, having just recently returned from missing four weeks with a quad issue. Mike Hughes would stand to benefit if the 25-year-old is unable to go.
Oct 24, 2021
Suiting up Sunday
Ward (quadriceps) is active for Sunday's contest against the Titans, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Ward will be active for the first time since Week 2. Now that he is healthy, the 25-year-old cornerback is expected to take back his starting gig opposite of L'Jarius Sneed. Ward played at least 55 defensive snaps and registered four tackles in both of his appearances this season and will likely have a similar workload against the Titans on Sunday.
Oct 22, 2021
Likely to play Sunday
Ward (quadriceps) is listed as questionable for Sunday's matchup with the Titans, but coach Andy Reid expects him to play, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward has been sidelined since Week 2 with the injury, but he is expected to return to action against the Titans in Week 7. Mike Hughes and Rashad Fenton have seen increased playing time during his absence, but Ward will likely take back his starting role if he is active Sunday.
Oct 20, 2021
Practicing Wednesday
Ward (quadriceps) returned to practice Wednesday, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward has been sidelined since Week 2 with the quadriceps injury, but he appears on track to suit up against the Titans on Sunday. If he is able to suit up in Week 7, then he will likely draw the starting nod opposite of L'Jairus Sneed in the secondary.
Oct 15, 2021
Will miss second straight game
Ward (quadriceps) will not play in Sunday's contest against Washington, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
McDowell reports that Ward is close to returning, but it won't be this week, as he will miss his second straight game. In his absence, Mike Hughes and Rashad Fenton should see additional playing time Sunday.
Oct 14, 2021
Not practicing Thursday
Ward (quadriceps) won't practice Thursday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward was unavailable for Sunday's loss to Buffalo, and he's still dealing with his quad injury. If he's held out once again in Week 6, Mike Hughes and Rashad Fenton should see additional playing time against Washington.
Oct 8, 2021
Officially questionable Friday
Ward (quadriceps) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Ward fully participated in practice Wednesday and Thursday, but he was a limited participant Friday. However, coach Andy Reid said the cornerback looked good in practice this week, and the 25-year-old is expected to play in Week 5, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
Oct 7, 2021
Clear of quad issue
Ward (quadriceps) was a full participant at Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Ward missed the past two games with the quadriceps injury, but he had no limitations at Wednesday's practice. The 25-year-old should reclaim his starting role at cornerback for the Chiefs in Week 5.
Oct 2, 2021
Downgraded to out
Ward (quadriceps) will not play in Sunday's game against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Ward originally drew a questionable designation, but the Chiefs have decided to exercise caution. He injured his quadriceps in last week's loss to the Chargers. In his absence, Mike Hughes will be the be the prime candidate to fill in at cornerback opposite L'Jarius Sneed.
Oct 1, 2021
Questionable after limited practice
Ward (quadriceps) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Ward picked up the injury late last week but was able to participate on a limited basis in all three of the Chiefs' practices this week after sitting out the team's Week 3 loss to the Chargers. The starting cornerback's hoping his absence will be limited to that one game, but Ward's status will likely come down to a game-time decision.
Sep 29, 2021
Back on practice field
Ward (quadriceps) logged a limited practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Ward picked up the quad injury in practice late last week, which caused him to miss a Week 3 matchup against Los Angeles. It's a positive development that he was able to return to the practice field in any capacity early in the week, and he'll now look to ramp up his participation in the coming days leading up to a Week 4 matchup against Philadelphia.
Sep 26, 2021
Not playing Sunday
Ward (quadriceps) is inactive Sunday against the Chargers, according to Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official website.
ANALYSIS
Ward was one of five inactive players for Sunday, though his absence is not much of a surprise considering he didn't practice Friday. His absence will probably cause Mike Hughes to have a bigger role on the defensive side of the ball.
Sep 24, 2021
Battling quad injury
Ward (quadriceps) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Ward likely picked up this injury in practice, as he failed to practice Friday and is listed as questionable after previously appearing healthy earlier in the week. If the starting cornerback sits out against the high-powered Chargers passing attack, Mike Hughes will likely take on a larger role.
Jun 10, 2021
Staying in Kansas City
Ward inked a second-round restricted free agent tender with the Chiefs on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The tender will set Ward to make $3.384 million with the Chiefs this season. The Middle Tennessee product handled a starting role at cornerback for much of the season last year, recording 51 tackles (38 solo), one sack and six pass breakups in 14 games. Sticking in Kansas City, Ward is expected to handle another sizeable role in the Chiefs' secondary in 2021.
Sep 28, 2020
Available Monday
Wared (hand) has been cleared for Monday's game against the Ravens, Chiefs' content creator Matt McMullen reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward was limited at practice all week but will ultimately give it a go. Look for him to take on his usual workload barring any setbacks.
Sep 26, 2020
Questionable for MNF
Ward (hand) is considered questionable for Monday's game versus the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Ward has been limited in practice all week, but his status is uncertain for Week 3's primetime matchup. He missed last game against the Chargers due to this hand injury, so Rashad Fenton filled into the starting role and is poised to do so again if Ward is ultimately inactive.
Sep 18, 2020
Won't play Sunday
Ward has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Nate Taylor of The Athletic
ANALYSIS
Rashad Fenton is expected to draw the start opposite rookie L'Jarius Sneed with Ward out. Considering the team believed Ward had a shot at playing earlier this week, there's a good chance he'll be back in there when the Chiefs travel to Baltimore in Week 3.
Sep 16, 2020
Return will hinge on practice
Ward's (hand) practice participation during the week will determine whether he's able to suit up in Week 2 against the Chargers, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward fractured his hand in the season-opening win over Houston, but he's reportedly doing well and could be back on the field 10 days later. While the Chiefs secondary held up well without the cornerback in the opener, his return would undoubtedly be a welcome sight.
Sep 11, 2020
Chance for Week 2 return
Ward is scheduled to undergo surgery for the hand fracture he suffered during Thursday's win over the Texans, but he could still have a shot to suit up Week 2 against the Chargers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward will have three extra days to recover before the Chiefs next suit up in Los Angeles, so the door is at least still open for him to play with a cast on his hand. The team will also have the option of placing Ward on injured reserve, which would allow him to return after a minimum of three weeks. If Ward ends up limited or forced to miss time, rookie fourth-round pick L'Jarius Sneed would be a prime candidate for increased playing time.
Sep 10, 2020
Suffered fractured hand
Ward sustained a fractured hand during Thursday's 34-20 win over the Texans, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ward's injury makes him likely to miss time, so the Chiefs could opt to place him on injured reserve for a minimum of three weeks. Rookie fourth-round pick L'Jarius Sneed, who had three tackles, two defended passes and one interception in his NFL debut Thursday, stands to see increased snaps if Ward is indeed forced to miss any games.
Sep 10, 2020
Out with hand injury
Ward is out for the remainder of Thursday's game against the Texans with a hand injury.
ANALYSIS
Ward will have a full 10 days to recover before Week 2's matchup with the Chargers. L'Jarius Sneed, who has already recorded an interception in 2020's season opener, figures to see more snaps at cornerback in Ward's absence.
Feb 19, 2020
Plays primary role in 2020
Ward posted 74 tackles (56 solo), two interceptions and a forced fumble in 2019.
ANALYSIS
After logging just 140 defensive snaps in 2018, Ward claimed a starting spot this season and took advantage of the opportunity. The second-year corner allowed just a 57.5 opposing quarterback rating to go along with just a 41.2 completion percentage and a 1:2 TD:INT ratio on passes tossed his direction. Ward still has another year left on his contract and figures to retain his starting job in 2020. Bashaud Breeland enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, so it remains to be seen who will line up across from Ward.
