McLaughlin could have even more opportunities during a Week 2 home matchup against a Bears team that allowed a short-handed Packers squad to ring up 34 points against them Sunday.

Tampa Bay waived Rodrigo Blankenship on Monday, leaving McLaughlin as the team's only kicker, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

McLaughlin and Blankenship had been competing to succeed Ryan Succop, who the Bucs let go in March. The team also waived Chris Blewitt, moves prompted by the Browns' selection of fellow kicker Cade York in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. McLaughlin, who made 15 of his 21 field-goal attempts and 36 of 37 extra-point tries in 2021 (his only season with Cleveland) will now look for an opportunity to compete for a roster spot elsewhere.

McLaughlin will be challenged for the starting placekicker job after Cleveland selected Cade York in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer, McLaughlin is in line to land on the reserve/COVID-19 list, with Chris Naggar slated to come up from the team's practice squad in advance of Saturday's game. Look for the moves to be made official later Friday.

McLaughlin will perform with a new holder due to punter/holder Jamie Gillan (COVID-19) being unavailable for Sunday's game against the Ravens, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

The Browns signed veteran punter Dustin Colquitt on Friday, when he joined them for practice and served as McLaughlin's holder. It may not be a big deal, but the new holder introduces a layer of uncertainty to the kicking packages. More so than the new holder, McLaughlin could be hampered by a Browns' offense that produced just nine field-goal attempts and 14 extra-point kicks over the last seven games.

McLaughlin failed to convert a 46-yard attempt on Cleveland's opening drive, his third missed kick over the last two games. McLaughlin's now under 80 percent on field goals -- 14 of 18 -- and more questions could arise. When the Browns' sputtering offense gets in range, it's vital they come away with points. The team is on a bye Week 13, which gives them plenty of time to evaluate McLaughlin and seek alternatives.

Cleveland special teams coach Mike Priefer said he remains confident in McLaughlin despite recent misses, Scott Petrak of The Chronicle-Telegram reports.

McLaughlin's been accurate all season and none of his misses have been the reason for a loss, so it would be a surprise if the Browns moved on from him. He missed a field-goal attempt and had an extra-point kick blocked last week against the Lions, which Priefer told Petrak was the result of low kick and not the protection. McLaughlin's made 13 of 16 field-goal attempts (81.2 percent) and 25 of 26 extra-point kicks (96.2 percent) in 2021.

McLaughlin, who won the kicking derby during preseason by default and was assured to be the kicker in the weeks leading up to Week 1, has yet to miss a kick and made himself the team's deserved kicker.

McLaughlin is in position to handle the Browns' kicking duties, with Cody Parkey headed to IR with a quad injury, Jake Trotter of ESPN.com reports.

That said, it's quite plausible that the Browns could bring another kicker aboard to challenge McLaughlin, but for now the 25-year-old, who's had regular-season stints with a handful of teams over the last two campaigns, will work behind Cleveland's Baker Mayfield-led offense. It's an assignment that could result in fantasy relevance for McLaughlin, if he ends up cementing it.

Rodrigo Blankenship outperformed McLaughlin in Saturday's scrimmage, making 6 of 7 field goals, the Indianapolis Star reports.

Blankenship made kicks of 33, 37, 41, 52, 56, 57 yards and missed from 48. McLaughlin made four of seven kicks, converting from 33, 37, 41 and 57 yards and missing from 48, 52 and 56 yards. McLaughlin had performed better than Blankenship in the first scrimmage, so the battle for the placekicking job remains close. However, McLaughlin is still the favorite as a veteran since he made five of six field goal attempts and all 11 PATs in his stint with the Colts last season.

McLaughlin is 8-for-8 in field goal attempts in Monday's scrimmage at Lucas Oil Stadium and appears to have a lead over rookie Rodrigo Blankenship, The Athletic reports.

Blankenship was 5-of-8 in field goal attempts with misses from 39, 44 and 53 yards. McLaughlin as a veteran looks likely to win the job, but the team may not announce the starting placekicker until shortly before Week 1.

McLaughlin has done well in the Colts' kicking competition thus far, Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star reports.
