Quiet in Week 10 win
Young posted three tackles (one solo) during the Saints' 17-7 win over the Panthers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Young wasn't able to extend his sack streak to four games Sunday, though he led all Saints defensive ends with 39 snaps on defense. Across the five games since returning from a calf injury Week 6, Young has accumulated 13 tackles (seven solo), including 3.0 sacks, three pass defenses, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Oct 28, 2025
Productive versus Tampa Bay
Young recorded four tackles (one solo), including 1.5 sacks, in New Orleans' loss versus the Buccaneers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Young was one of the Saints' few bright spots during the blowout loss, as he was involved in two of the team's three sacks of Baker Mayfield. The 2020 first-round pick has gotten off to a hot start since making his debut in the Week 6 loss to the Patriots, logging eight tackles (four solo), including 2.0 sacks, across his first three outings.
Oct 23, 2025
No longer under the weather
Young (full) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Young was held out of Wednesday's practice due to an illness, but he appears to no longer be under the weather and should be available for Sunday's NFC South clash against the Buccaneers. The 2020 first-rounder missed the first five games of the regular season due to a calf injury, but he played in Weeks 5 and 6 and logged four tackles (three solo), including 0.5 sacks, and two pass defenses over that span.
Oct 22, 2025
Sidelined to begin week
Young (illness) did not practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Young has played in the last two Saints' games, his only two contests of the season. There's no indication the illness will threaten his availability for Sunday's matchup against Tampa Bay, but his progress throughout the week will be worth monitoring.
Oct 10, 2025
Ready to rock
Young (calf) has no injury designation ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Patriots, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports.
ANALYSIS
The Ohio State product has yet to play this season due to a calf injury sustained in early September, but it now appears he's ready to make his 2025 debut in Week 6. Young appeared in 17 games for the Saints last season, recording 31 total tackles, including 5.5 sacks, three passes defended and one forced fumble. Now that he's returned to full health, he's expected to operate as one of the Saints' top outside linebackers and start opposite Carl Granderson.
Oct 8, 2025
Encouraging progress
Young logged a limited practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Young has yet to play this season, so his availability for any portion of practice is encouraging. Per Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football, Young began practicing later in the session, but he was wearing pads and participating in all activities.
Oct 1, 2025
Ruled out again
Young (calf) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Giants, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Young has yet to play this season, and it's curious as to why the Saints haven't placed Young on injured reserve at this point. Getting ruled out this early in the week would suggest Young isn't particularly close to a return. Chris Rumph will continue to see increased playing time on the Saints' defensive line.
Sep 26, 2025
Out for Week 4
Young (calf) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Bills, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Ohio State product is now in line to miss his fourth consecutive game due to a calf injury sustained in early September. Chris Rumph is expected to continue starting opposite Carl Granderson until Young returns to the field.
Sep 19, 2025
Remains out for Week 3
Young (calf) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Matthew Paras of NOLA.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Young will miss his third straight game to open the season after he was injured earlier this month in practice. Carl Granderson, Chris Rumph and Jonah Williams will continue to see increased reps off the edge for New Orleans.
Sep 17, 2025
Misses practice Wednesday
Young (calf) did not practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Young has yet to play this season after suffering a calf injury in practice leading up to Week 1. Carl Granderson, Chris Rumph and Jonah Williams are in line to handle edge-rushing duties for the Saints if Young needs to miss another contest this coming Sunday versus Seattle.
Sep 12, 2025
Remains out Week 2
Young (calf) won't play Sunday against the 49ers, Matthew Paras of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Young will miss a second consecutive game to begin the season due to the calf injury he suffered in practice leading up to Week 1. His next chance to make his season debut will come Week 3 at Seattle.
Sep 10, 2025
Opens week with DNP
Young (calf) did not participate in Wednesday's practice, John Hendrix of AthlonSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Young picked up a calf injury in practice last week, which prevented him from playing in the Saints' regular-season opener against the Cardinals this past Sunday. He'll have two more opportunities this week to return to practice and give himself a chance at making his 2025 regular-season debut against the 49ers in Week 2. Chris Rumph and practice squad linebacker Jonah Williams would be candidates to see increased snaps on defense if Young is unable to play.
Sep 5, 2025
Ruled out for Week 1
Young (calf) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Young injured his calf in practice Wednesday and will sit out Week 1 as a result of the injury. The pass rusher's next chance to take the field will come against the 49ers in Week 2. Chris Rumph will likely see a boost in playing time due to Young's absence.
Sep 4, 2025
Doesn't practice Thursday
Young (calf) did not participate in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Young is dealing with a calf issue that he picked up during Wednesday's practice, but the 2020 first-rounder relayed Thursday that the injury is not a long-term concern, per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. Regardless, Young's practice participation Friday will provide more clarity on his status heading into Sunday's regular-season opener against Arizona. Chris Rumph would be slated to see more snaps at outside linebacker opposite Carl Granderson if Young is not cleared to play.
Sep 3, 2025
Exits practice with injury
Young exited New Orleans' practice Wednesday with a calf injury, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Young is currently undergoing further evaluations but as of now the injury is not believed to be serious, and he should have a chance to play Sunday versus the Cardinals. If he ends up being sidelined however, Chris Rumph will likely get the start at outside linebacker in Young's place.
Mar 10, 2025
Back to New Orleans
The Saints re-signed Young to a three-year, $51 million contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Incentives can push the deal to $57 million. The No. 2 overall pick of the 2020 Draft, Young appeared in all 17 games for the Saints last season, his first with the team. Young played 63 percent of the defensive snaps as a sub-package edge rusher and finished the season with 31 tackles (21 solo), including 5.5 sacks, tying him for second-most on the team. The Saints hope Young can continue to find his early-career form. He's still just 25 years old.
Jan 8, 2025
Productive season as backup
Young finished the 2024 regular season with 31 tackles (31 solo), including 5.5 sacks, three pass defenses and one forced fumble through 17 games.
ANALYSIS
Despite serving as the backup defensive end behind Carl Granderson and Cameron Jordan all season long, Young ended up up playing at least 60 percent of the Saints' defensive snaps in 13 of 17 games, and his 5.5 sacks were his most since his rookie season with Washington in 2020 (7.5). Young signed a one-year, $13 million contract with the Saints in March of 2024, so he'll enter the offseason as an unrestricted free agent for the second straight year.
Dec 21, 2024
Clear for Monday
Young (illness) does not carry a designation ahead of Monday's game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Young missed practice Thursday and Friday with an illness before returning as full participant Saturday. The 2020 No. 2 overall pick has been productive in his first season with New Orleans, tallying 25 tackles, including 5.5 sacks, and two passes defended. He should reprise his role as the team's top rotational edge rusher behind Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson on Monday.
Dec 20, 2024
Misses Friday's practice
Young (illness) didn't practice Friday, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old has now missed two consecutive practices due to an illness, putting his status for the Saints' Week 16 matchup against the Packers in doubt. Young almost certainly needs to upgrade to at least limited practice Saturday in order to play Monday night. If he's unable to do so, Payton Turner is likely to serve as New Orleans' top rotational edge rusher.
Dec 19, 2024
Dealing with illness
Young (illness) did not practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Young is coming off a two-sack performance against the Commanders this past Sunday. However, it appears the 2020 first-pick is under the weather, which prevented him from participating in the Saints' first official practice of the week Thursday. Young will have two more opportunities to return to practice ahead of Monday night's game against the Packers.
Dec 17, 2024
Has multi-sack game Sunday
Young recorded three tackles (three solo) including 2.0 sacks during Sunday's 20-19 loss versus the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
Chase played one of his best games in recent memory against his former team in Week 15, posting two sacks for the first time since Week 7 of the 2023 season. He'll be hoping to add to his season sack total of 5.5 in Week 16 at Green Bay.
Jul 24, 2024
Comes off PUP list
The Saints activated Young (neck) off the active/PUP list Wednesday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Young has been dealing with a nagging neck injury that's kept him sidelined since signing with the Saints, but he was spotted practicing Wednesday and it finally seems as if he's past the issue. Now that the former second-overall pick has returned to full health, he's expected to serve as one of New Orleans' top edge rushers in 2024.
Jul 23, 2024
Passes physical
Young (neck) passed his physical Tuesday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Young should officially be good to go for practice tomorrow despite having been placed on the active/PUP list last Thursday. The 2020 first-round pick will likely serve as a rotational pass rusher behind Cameron Jordan (ankle) and Carl Granderson after signing with the team this offseason.
Jul 23, 2024
Set to practice Wednesday
Head coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday that Young (neck) will participate in practice Wednesday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Young can be activated off the active/PUP list at any point during training camp to participate in practice, although it is unclear whether he will be a full participant or work with trainers. The 2020 first-round pick out of Ohio State is working through the final steps of his recovery process from his offseason neck surgery. Young recorded 25 tackles (17 solo), including 7.5 sacks, and two pass deflections over 16 regular-season games with the Commanders and 49ers in 2023.
Jul 18, 2024
Sent to PUP list by New Orleans
The Saints placed Young (neck) on the active/PUP list Thursday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Young has said he intends to be ready for the start of training camp, but for now it appears that he's still working through the recovery process following his offseason neck surgery. He can come off the PUP list at any point during training camp or the preseason, once cleared to practice, and there are still just over three weeks until New Orleans' preseason opener at Arizona. The 2020 first-round pick could emerge as a key part of the Saints' pass-rush corps for the 2024 season, health permitting.
Jun 13, 2024
Plans to be back by training camp
Young received a positive report on his recovery from offseason neck surgery earlier this week, and plans to participate in the Saints' training camp, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Young's neck surgery earlier in the offseason was supposed to sideline him until at least training camp, so this report comes as positive news for the Saints. The former first-round pick out of Ohio State has struggled with injuries since he won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020, appearing in just 28 regular-season games over the last three seasons. Once Young returns to full health, he's expected to provide some pass-rushing prowess to the Saints' defense in 2024.
Mar 20, 2024
Facing uncertainty with neck/contract
Young's one-year contract gives the Saints protection in the event he struggles to recover from his upcoming neck surgery or otherwise misses time, with 61 percent of the money coming from per-game roster bonuses, NOLA.com's Matthew Paras reports.
ANALYSIS
Young has a $5.01 million base salary and $7.99 million in per-game roster bonuses, with the former guaranteed at signing and the latter only guaranteed if he's released, i.e., he'll miss out on around $470,000 for each game he's on the roster but inactive. Albert Breer of SI.com reports that scans on Young's neck led to reduced interest in free agency, due to a condition that was first discovered last summer after he suffered a stinger in the preseason. He ended up playing seven games for Washington and then 12 post-trade for the 49ers (including playoffs), recording 7.5 sacks in the regular season and another during the postseason. Young was the No. 2 overall pick and Defensive Rookie of the Year back in 2020, but he suffered a severe knee injury the following season and managed only 1.5 sacks in 12 appearances between 2021 and 2022. He's scheduled for surgery Thursday and expected to be healthy for training camp, at which point the Saints likely will use him off the bench behind starting DEs Cameron Jordan
Mar 19, 2024
In line for neck surgery
Young is slated to undergo neck surgery that will keep him sidelined until at least training camp, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
On the heels of signing a one-year, $13 million contract with the Saints on Monday, Young now will address an injury that may stem from the stinger that he suffered back in the preseason and resulted in inactive status for Week 1. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 Draft, he spent the first three and a half seasons of his career with the Commanders before landing with the 49ers at the trade deadline in October. Overall, Young has 16.5 sacks among his 100 tackles in 43 career contests.
Mar 18, 2024
Officially joins New Orleans
The Saints and Young agreed to a contract Monday.
ANALYSIS
According to Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com, Young's new deal will be for one year. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 Draft, Young earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors to kick off his career, but his next two seasons were derailed by injuries, and he split 2023 between the Commanders and 49ers. With 16.5 sacks in 43 games in his first four campaigns, he'll be a part of a New Orleans pass rush that features Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson.
Mar 18, 2024
Looks set to sign with New Orleans
Young is expected to sign a contract with the Saints after visiting with the team Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Young, the No. 2 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft and former Defensive Rookie of the Year, was acquired by the 49ers prior to last season's trade deadline. He tallied 2.5 sacks across nine regular-season games with San Francisco but was allowed to walk in free agency, where it looks like he'll get a fresh start in New Orleans. Young looks to finally be back in top form after knee issues significantly hampered him in 2021 and 2022, and it would be an ideal situation for him to pair with (and learn from) veteran defensive end Cameron Jordan with the Saints.
Nov 21, 2023
Logs first sack as a 49er
Young compiled two tackles (two solo), including a sack, during San Francisco's 27-14 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Young managed to record his first sack with the 49ers on Sunday, and he now has five sacks total through seven games this season. The 2020 first-round pick will now look to increase his totals during Thursday's matchup with the Seahawks.
Oct 31, 2023
Heading to Bay Area
The Commanders traded Young to the 49ers on Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
San Francisco has been seeking out a bookend to reigning Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa, and it appears to have found one finally in Young, who was the second overall pick in the 2020 Draft. Both are Ohio State products, and Young seemingly has bounced back after back-to-back subpar and injury-riddled campaigns with five sacks in seven games so far this season. With the 49ers on bye, Young will have plenty of time to get up to speed with his new team before its next game Sunday, Nov. 12 in Jacksonville.
Oct 23, 2023
Tallies two sacks Sunday
Young registered three tackles (three solo), with two sacks, during Washington's 14-7 loss to the Giants on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Young's two sacks led the team and increased his season total to five. The 2020 first-round pick is on pace for his best season since his rookie year and will look to add to his numbers next week against the Eagles.
Sep 19, 2023
Makes impact in return
Young returned from a neck injury, played in his first game of the season and recorded 1.5 sacks and three tackles in Washington's 35-33 win over Denver on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Young also played on 71 percent of the defensive snaps after his coach, Ron Rivera, said he would "most likely be on a pitch count." It's an encouraging sign for the 2020 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, who has started just 11 games since that season. Young tore his ACL and patellar tendon in Week 10 of the 2021 campaign and missed most of 2022 before injuring his neck in the preseason this year.
Sep 15, 2023
Will play Week 2
Young (neck) has been cleared to play Sunday against the Broncos, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Young suffered a neck stinger during the preseason and missed the Commanders' Week 1 win over the Cardinals. The No. 2 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, Young has played in just three games since Week 10 of the 2021 season. Though Young is likely to start at defensive end opposite Montez Sweat, head coach Ron Rivera said that Young will "most likely be on a pitch count" in his 2023 debut, per Josina Anderson of CBS Sports.
Sep 14, 2023
Ramps up activity
Young (neck) was a full participant in practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Young has been limited in his participation since suffering a stinger in a preseason game Aug. 11. His ability to log a full practice is certainly a big step in his recovery and a sign that he should be able to suit up on gameday soon. However, it was previously reported on Saturday by Ben Standig of The Athletic that Young was unlikely to return until Week 3, so despite the positive step taken Thursday, his status for Sunday appears to still be up in the air. Ultimately, the decision of whether he plays Sunday against the Broncos will be up to the team's doctors, according to John Keim of ESPN.com.
Sep 13, 2023
Limited once again
Young (neck) logged a limited practice Wednesday, per the team's Week 2 injury report.
ANALYSIS
Young isn't expected to be back until Week 3 at the earliest, but he continues to log limited practices as he ramps up his activity, and the team gradually increases his ability to take contact again. According to head coach Ron Rivera, as reported by John Keim of ESPN.com, "Chase was able to take the reps he was supposed to take. We'll continue to go by what the doctor's plans are and go from there."
Sep 9, 2023
Likely out until Week 3
Young (neck) has been ruled out for Sunday's season opener against the Cardinals and is not expected to make his debut until at least Week 3, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After a summer of rehab on his neck, the Commanders will ultimately err on the side of caution with Young as the season kicks off. Team doctors have laid out a plan to gradually increase his contact at practice that puts him in line to return in Week 3. The 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year only played the final three games of last season after missing the previous 22 dating back to Week 10 of the 2021 season due to a significant knee injury. Washington declined his fifth-year option during the offseason, which makes him a free agent following this year's campaign. Thus, this is a crucial season for the Ohio State product.
Sep 8, 2023
Questionable for Week 1
Young (neck) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Young spent most of the summer rehabbing his neck injury but did get in a round of limited practices this week. That would typically put Young in line to play, but after missing most of camp and the preseason, it's unclear if the Commanders will clear him to play Week 1.
Sep 6, 2023
Back to practice, but limited
Young (neck) was a limited participant at practice Wednesday ahead of Week 1 versus the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Young played in just three games in 2022 and missed most of the preseason with a neck issue, but it's at least an encouraging sign to see him return to practice. 2020 seventh-rounder James Smith-Williams probably has the most to gain in terms of playing time if Young sits out of game action.
Aug 31, 2023
Still not cleared
Young (neck) continues to progress in his recovery but has yet to be cleared for contact, Ben Standig reports.
ANALYSIS
Young's status for the team's season opener against the Cardinals is now firmly in question. The Ohio State product suffered a stinger during their first preseason game and the injury has since seemingly been downplayed. However, the 24-year-old is still practicing with the team and doing individual drills to get ready for Week 1 despite his inability to make contact. He will have a doctor's appointment again this week, after failing to get clearance at his appointment last Friday, which will likely shed better light on Young's ability to be ready next Sunday.
Aug 24, 2023
Visiting doctor
Young (neck) will visit the doctor Friday to determine when he can be cleared for contact, according to head coach Ron Rivera, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Young left an Aug. 11 preseason contest with the Browns after suffering a stinger and was practicing in a limited fashion in the days after. However, it appears he still hasn't been cleared for contact, but that could change soon after Friday.
Aug 23, 2023
Still dealing with injury
Young (neck) has a doctor's appointment this week, but things are remaining "positive," according to head coach Ron Rivera, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young left an Aug. 11 preseason contest with the Browns after suffering a stinger and was practicing in a limited fashion in the days after. However, it appears the 24-year-old may still be feeling the effects of the injury, although it's unclear how much. He'll continue working to get back to full health with Week 1 just over two weeks away.
Aug 13, 2023
Limited in practice
Young (neck) took it slow in practice Sunday out of an abundance of caution, according to head coach Ron Rivera, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Young suffered a stinger during Friday's preseason game against the Browns, but the fact that he was able to take to the field Sunday, even if just for individual drills, should be good news for the 24-year-old. He was limited to just three games in 2022 as he worked to return from an ACL tear suffered during the 2021 campaign, but now fully recovered from that injury, he's focused on getting back to feeling like himself. He told Ralph Vacchiano of FoxSports.com, "Just know that I feel good and I'm running around. I feel explosive again." Young will now work through his latest setback, albeit a seemingly small one, to be healthy come Week 1.
Aug 12, 2023
Exits with stinger
Young left Friday's 17-15 preseason victory over the Browns early due to a stinger, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Ron Rivera did not sound too concerned about the injury following the game, but it is still an issue worth monitoring. Young had his fifth-year option declined by Washington during the offseason and is now looking to bounce back from an injury plagued start to his career.
Apr 26, 2023
Fifth-year option not picked up
The Commanders will not pick up Young's fifth-year option, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young attended the start of Washington's voluntary offseason program and looks to be back to full health after having been limited to just three contests last season, but the 2023 campaign now projects to potentially be his last with Washington. The 2020 first-round pick burst onto the scene as a rookie, notching 7.5 sacks in 15 games, but ACL and MCL tears he sustained in November 2021 have since plagued him. Young is now slated to hit free agency after the 2023 season.
Apr 17, 2023
Active for offseason workout
Young was present for the start of Washington's offseason team workout program Monday, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Young only appeared in three games last season as he recovered from ACL and MCL tears he sustained in November 2021, but he looks ready to go ahead of 2023. Although the team hasn't picked up his fifth-year option on his contract for 2024, the 24-year-old seems to be all in for what could be his final season in Washington.
Jan 31, 2023
Plays only three games in 2022
Young made only three appearances in 2022 and recorded five tackles and one pass defense on 115 snaps.
ANALYSIS
The 2020 No. 1 overall pick made his season debut Dec. 24, after suffering ACL and MCL tears on Nov. 14 the year before. Young has only nine career sacks through three pro seasons, with 7.5 of those coming in a debut campaign that also included four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a Defensive Rookie of the Year award. With a full offseason to continue strengthening his knee, Young has a chance to emerge as a top edge rusher in 2023, his age-24 campaign.
Dec 29, 2022
Back in full Thursday
Young (illness) practiced fully Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After missing Wednesday's session due to an illness, the 2020 No. 2 overall draft pick returned to Thursday's practice without limitations, ultimately putting him back on track to suit up again New Year's Day versus Cleveland. Young made his campaign debut this past weekend in San Francisco and collected two tackles while playing 58 percent of Washington's defensive snaps, and while it's likely that he sees an uptick in usage, he'll presumably be on some sort of limited snap count in Week 17.
Dec 28, 2022
Dealing with illness
Young didn't practice Wednesday due to an illness.
ANALYSIS
Young, who missed the majority of the campaign while rehabbing from surgery to repair his ACL, MCL and patella tendon in his right knee, made his first appearance in over a year during last week's loss to the 49ers, totaling two tackles and one pass defense across 30 defensive snaps. The positive news is that the superstar pass rusher is not listed with a knee injury, suggesting he avoided any potential setbacks during his return. However, Young is now dealing with an illness that's put his status for Week 17 in jeopardy. He'll have two more opportunities to clear the aliment and return to practice before Washington needs to make a decision on his status for Sunday's matchup against the Browns.
Dec 24, 2022
Small role expected in debut
Young (knee) is expected to face an initial limit of 12-to-15 snaps in his season debut Saturday at San Francisco, though head coach Ron Rivera is leaving the door open for the defensive end to play more if he's feeling good during the contest, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Young will be playing his first game in more than 13 months after he suffered a torn ACL and MCL and ruptured patella tendon in his right knee Nov. 14 of last year. Though Young has required slightly longer than anticipated to fully move past the injury, he appears to have had a positive week of practice and will finally be turned loose Saturday. Young will likely be limited to some extent Saturday, but he should be ready to take on a full workload by the time the Commanders host the Cowboys for the regular-season finale Jan. 8.
Dec 22, 2022
Finally ready for 2022 debut
Washington head coach Ron Rivera said Young (knee) will make his 2022 debut Saturday at San Francisco, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Rivera characterized Young as a "full go" for the Week 16 contest, the star defensive end will be on an unspecified pitch count to some degree while he plays in his first game in more than 13 months, per Jhabvala. After tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee and rupturing his patellar tendon in late November of last year and undergoing surgery, Young was cleared to practice Nov. 2 and was then activated from the PUP list three weeks later. Despite being added back to the 53-man roster, Young proceeded to miss the Commanders' subsequent three games while he continued to slowly ramp up in practice, but he appears to have turned a corner in his recovery from the knee injury this week. His return this weekend in any capacity should provide a nice boost to the Washington pass rush.
Dec 21, 2022
Still limited at practice
Young (knee) was limited at Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
After being listed as limited on Tuesday's estimated injury report, Young mixed into drills in a similar capacity Wednesday, which has been his norm since the Commanders activated him from the reserve/PUP list on Nov. 21. But the team has yet to clear him for game action, which has resulted in three consecutive absences since that point. Speaking to the media Wednesday, Young relayed to John Keim of ESPN.com that his recovery from a ruptured patellar tendon has been the main thing that has delayed his season debut, rather than the torn ACL he suffered Nov. 22, 2021. Young also told Keim that Washington has "a good plan" for him, so he'll continue to follow it until he gains clearance to play, which could happen as soon as Saturday at San Francisco.
Dec 18, 2022
Season debut delayed again
Young (knee) is listed as inactive Sunday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The Commanders activated Young from the reserve/PUP list on Nov. 21, likely with the hope they'd feel comfortable enough reintroducing him to the defense in short order. However, he's now had three chances to do so as he seeks his first game action since tearing the ACL in his right knee on Nov. 22, 2021. Washington is firmly in the playoff chase, but with just three games remaining in the regular season, the team is running out of time to see what Young can offer before the wild-card round kicks off on Saturday, Jan. 14. His next chance to play will come Saturday in San Francisco.
Dec 18, 2022
Unlikely to debut Sunday
Young (knee), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Giants, isn't expected to play, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Young's status won't be made official until the Commanders release their inactive list 90 minutes prior to the 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff, but the star edge rusher looks as though he still needs more time to get back to full speed while he recovers from the surgery he required in late November of last year to repair a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee. Though he was activated from the PUP list Nov. 21, Young still hasn't demonstrated enough progress in practice in recent weeks for the Commanders to justify turning him loose. Young will now turn his focus toward potentially making his 2022 debut Week 16 at San Francisco.
Dec 16, 2022
Questionable for Week 15
Young (knee) is considered questionable to play Sunday versus the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Young has continued to progress towards a return to the field in recent weeks, logging limited practices on and off since being activated from the reserve/PUP list in late November. Now following Washington's bye week, the defensive end could be set for his 2022 debut against the Giants, but his status is worth monitoring ahead of the contest. If he can't go, James Smith-Williams will draw another start at left end.
Dec 14, 2022
Practices Wednesday
Young (knee) was a limited participant at practice Wednesday, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young has been logging limited practices since he was activated from the reserve/PUP list Nov. 21. How much longer he'll have to wait to make his 2022 debut is unknown, but he was considered a game-time decision for the team's Week 13 game with the Giants. After a Week 14 bye, Young should be inching closer to his debut, but it's likely we may have to wait until inactives are released ahead of Sunday's rematch with the Giants.
Dec 4, 2022
Season debut delayed again
Young (knee) is inactive for Sunday's game at the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Young remains in the later stages of his recovery from the torn ACL in his right knee that he sustained Week 10 of last year and required surgery Nov. 22, 2021. While he was activated from the reserve/PUP list Nov. 21 this year, his season debut will be delayed yet again, with a pregame workout ultimately deciding his fate Sunday. The Commanders embark on their bye week after Sunday's contest, so Young's next chance to play will arrive Sunday, Dec. 18, again versus the Giants.
Dec 4, 2022
Appears likely to sit Week 13
Young (knee) remains listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Giants, though he's considered a long shot to make his season debut, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Fowler's report aligns with one from two hours prior from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, who relays that Young is "not quite there yet" in his recovery from the surgery he underwent last November to repair the ACL and MCL in his right knee. Young was a limited participant in practices Wednesday through Friday and is set to go through a pregame workout Sunday, but the expectation is that he'll be included on the Commanders' inactive list, which will be released 90 minutes before the 1 p.m. ET kickoff.
Dec 4, 2022
Game-time decision for Week 13
Young (knee) is a game-time decision for Sunday's contest against the Giants, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Young's status could be influenced by the fact that Washington gets a bye after Sunday's divisional matchup, meaning the star defensive end would get a full additional week of rest if he sits out. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Young isn't expected to suit up Week 13, though his status may not be official until inactives are released ahead of Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
Dec 2, 2022
Questionable to return Sunday
Young (knee) is questionable to play Sunday against the Giants, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young was limited throughout Washington's practices ahead of the Week 13 matchup versus the Giants, leaving his weekend availability once again up in the air. The former No. 2 overall pick has yet to make his 2022-23 season debut, as he's been working his way back from the ACL and MCL tears in his right knee he suffered a year ago. If Young is able to suit up Sunday in New York, he'd likely be eased into the defensive line rotation, while James Smith-Williams would presumably see his snap count decrease as a result.
Dec 1, 2022
Limited once again
Young (knee) logged a limited practice Thursday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Young logged another limited practice as he works his way toward his 2022 debut. He'll continue pushing to make that happen Sunday against the Giants, but he'll probably need to log a full practice before doing so, making his participation level Friday worth monitoring.
Nov 30, 2022
Limited to start Week 13 prep
Young (knee) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Young was activated from the reserve/PUP list ahead of Week 12, but he ultimately remained sidelined for the win over Atlanta due to an illness. The star pass rusher isn't being listed with an illness anymore, so it appears he's moved past the aliment, though he remains limited while working his way back from ACL and MCL tears in his right knee. Young will likely have to log at least one full practice before Washington clears him for his 2022 season debut.
Nov 27, 2022
Won't play Sunday
Young (knee/illness) has been downgraded to out for Sunday's game against the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Washington activated Young from the reserve/PUP list Monday, but the defensive end's 2022 season debut won't arrive before next Sunday's game against the Giants. Young last suited up in Week 10 of the 2021 campaign, when he tore his right ACL and MCL in a contest against Tampa Bay.
Nov 27, 2022
Dealing with illness
Young (knee/illness) isn't expected to be actives for Sunday's contest against the Falcons, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Young has been activated from the reserve/PUP list and is eligible to make his season debut as early as Week 12, and while it looks like that was Washington's initial plan, an illness may delay the standout defensive end's return one more game. The Commanders will make an official decision on Young's status prior to Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, but with Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports reporting that he would be limited to approximately 12-to-16 snaps even if active, fantasy managers in IDP formats may want to pivot to other options.
Nov 26, 2022
Trending toward another absence
Young (knee) is slated for a pregame warmup ahead of Sunday's contest against the Falcons, but he isn't likely to be active, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Commanders are taking a cautious approach with Young's recovery from the torn ACL that he sustained Week 10 of last season. He at least was activated from injured reserve Monday before practicing in a limited capacity Wednesday through Friday, leaving him questionable for Week 12 action. If, for some reason, he gains clearance to play Sunday, Young will be limited to approximately 12-to-16 snaps, per Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports.
Nov 25, 2022
Week 12 availability up in the air
Young (knee) is considered questionable to play Sunday against the Falcons, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young remained limited in each practice prior to this weekend's matchup versus Atlanta, indicating the possibility of the former No. 2 overall pick making his season debut as early as Sunday. If it's eventually concluded that another week of recovery is necessary for Young, then James Smith-Williams would likely continue serving as a prominent contributor on the team's defensive line.
Nov 23, 2022
Logs limited practice session
Young (knee - ACL + MCL) was a limited participant at Washington's practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Young was activated from the reserve/PUP list Monday and was able to take the practice field Wednesday, though it's uncertain whether he'll be able to play Sunday against Atlanta. The star defensive lineman has yet to play this season after tearing the ACL in his right knee last November, so the Commanders are likely to be cautious about his return. When he makes his season debut, Young will boost a Washington pass rush that ranks 11th in the NFL with 29 sacks on the campaign.
Nov 21, 2022
Activated from PUP list
Washington activated Young (knee) from the reserve/PUP list Monday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young, who's been sidelined since tearing his ACL and MCL last November, was designated to return Nov. 2, so his 21-day window to be added to the active roster was dwindling. The star pass rusher is likely still considered questionable for Sunday's matchup against the Falcons, but his status will likely become clearer when Washington releases its initial injury report for Week 12.
Nov 19, 2022
Not returning for Week 11
Young (knee) was not activated from injured reserve Saturday, although head coach Ron Rivera anticipates he'll be activated before Wednesday, John Keim of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
This seemed like the likely conclusion given the dulling optimism as the week dwindled. The Commanders have until Wednesday to activate Young before he's ineligible to return this year, but coach Rivera indicated that the pass rusher's return is a mere formality at this point.
Nov 18, 2022
Unlikely to play in Week 11
Young (knee) doesn't seem likely to return in Week 11 versus the Texans, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Although there was optimism surrounding Young being active for Sunday's matchup with Houston, it now appears as if the team has shifted their focus to him being back for Week 12 against the Falcons. The defensive end will have his 21-day practice window come to a close Wednesday and the team will activate him from injured reserve then.
Nov 15, 2022
Expected to be activated Week 11
Young (knee) is expected to be activated from the PUP list ahead of Sunday's contest against the Texans and make his season debut, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Young is expected to suit up for Sunday's road matchup against Houston, which would mark his first appearance since he tore his right ACL and MCL last November. The Commanders have been clear that Young's return to the field will be dependent on the team's full confidence in his health, so assuming the standout defensive end avoids any setbacks, he could be in line for a substantial snap count in his season debut Sunday.
Nov 14, 2022
Won't be activated for MNF
Young (knee) won't be activated for Monday's game against the Eagles, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio said this week that Young isn't yet up to full speed but is progressing in his recovery. The defensive end hasn't yet made any appearances in 2022 due to the knee injury that he sustained last year, but he should have a strong chance to make his season debut in Houston on Nov. 20.
Nov 11, 2022
Still progressing with recovery
Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio said Friday that Young (knee) isn't necessarily up to full speed yet, but he's doing everything he can to return, Matthew Paras of The Washington Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Though it's uncertain whether Young will be made available for Monday's contest in Philadelphia, it's encouraging knowing that the 23-year-old is inching towards a return in the near future. Young has yet to suit up in 2022 as a result of the devastating knee injury he sustained a year ago, but he resumed practicing on Nov. 2 and is expected to be activated to Washington's active roster any day now.
Nov 4, 2022
Won't be activated for Week 9
Young (knee) won't be activated ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Vikings, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young returned to practice Wednesday and head coach Ron Rivera felt like the 23-year-old had a "very good week" but he's not quite ready to be back on the field. Young still needs to prove a few things and get back into game shape before being activated. His next chance to appear in a game will come in Week 10 against the Eagles on Monday Night Football.
Nov 2, 2022
Returns to practice
The Commanders designated Young (knee) for return from the PUP list Wednesday, Zach Selby of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Young hasn't yet been formally activated from the PUP list and added back to the 53-man roster, Wednesday's transaction opens up a 21-day window in which the Commanders can evaluate him during practice. If Young looks good in his initial three practices since tearing his ACL and MCL last November and undergoing surgery, he could be added to the roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Vikings, though the defensive end would most likely be on a limited snap count in that contest.
Oct 31, 2022
Expected to practice Wednesday
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday that Washington will designate Young (knee) to return from the reserve/PUP list Wednesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young is expected to return to practice Wednesday, which will open a 21-day period for him to be added to the active roster. The 23-year-old suffered a torn ACL and MCL last season and is barely over a year removed from the initial injury. Despite the optimistic report, it's likely Washington is extremely cautious and opts to work Young back to game action slowly
Oct 27, 2022
Could practice next week
Young (knee) should be designated to return from IR next week, according to head coach Ron Rivera, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young was expected to have his 21-day window to return opened this week, but ultimately he'll have to wait at least one more week. Jhabvala notes that Rivera said Young visited with Dr. Andrews on Thursday and "everything is positive." Considering it's been a little less than a year since the 23-year-old suffered a torn ACL and MCL, it really isn't surprising he's not quite ready, despite his continued optimism of a quick return during the offseason. If he does begin to practice next week, he could suit up as soon as Week 9 against the Vikings, although a Week 10 return against the Eagles may be more realistic.
Oct 26, 2022
Remains unavailable for practice
Young (knee) will not return to practice this week, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
The Commanders will continue to be cautious in their approach to Young's return to the practice field, now setting their sights on Week 9. The defensive lineman will have another visit with his doctor this week, while the Commanders' focus is to not rush him back.
Oct 24, 2022
Nearing return
Young (knee) will "more than likely" be designated to return from IR on Wednesday, according to head coach Ron Rivera, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
Young's recovery from a torn ACL and MCL has progressed enough that he is on the verge of a return to the field. However, Finlay also notes that it is unlikely Young will play in Week 8 against the Colts, as building up Young's conditioning will be the team's focus first. Once he is designated to return he will have a 21-day window to practice with the team before he has to be placed on the active roster. If Young does sit out Sunday against the Colts, his next chance to play will be in Week 9 against the Vikings.
Oct 23, 2022
Receives encouraging update
Young (knee) met with Dr. James Andrews on Sunday and received good reports, Matthew Paras of The Washington Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Young is eligible to be activated off the PUP list this week, but coach Ron Rivera wouldn't commit to the 23-year-old returning to the field ahead of Week 8. However, Young has made good progress in his recovery recently and appears to be closing in on a return in the near future.
Oct 21, 2022
Trending in right direction
A preliminary report on Young's knee was "pretty good," according to coach Ron Rivera, and Young has a meeting scheduled with team doctors Sunday, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Young still doesn't have a set return timetable in his recovery from a torn ACL, but he appears to be making steady progress. It's safe to say that he won't be ready to play in Week 7 against the Packers, though. Young will need to be removed from the PUP list before he can suit up.
Oct 14, 2022
Yet to be cleared for practice
Young (knee) will see his surgeon one more time and has yet to be cleared to return to practice, Grant Paulsen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Ron Rivera said Friday that Chase Young will meet with James Andrews, his surgeon, again in the near future, but he refused to commit to a timeline for the defensive end's return to the practice field. Young suffered ACL and MCL tears in his right knee last season and is expected to return to the field at some point during the 2022 campaign. The 23-year-old has produced 70 tackles, including nine sacks, while deflecting six passes with six forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries over 24 career games.
Oct 3, 2022
Will remain on PUP Week 5
Coach Ron Rivera said Monday that Young (knee) will not be activated from the physically unable to perform list this week, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young sustained ACL and MCL tears in his right knee last November, and while he is still expected to return to play at some point before Week 9, he'll need to sit out at least one more game as he recovers. The former second-overall pick out of Ohio State had a great rookie season in 2020 before taking a bit of a step back and ultimately missing his team's last 8 games in 2021. His return should provide a boost to a defense that's allowed 26.8 points per game through four weeks this season.
Sep 11, 2022
Expected back by mid-season
Young (knee) will soon be re-evaluated by Dr. James Andrews and is expected to be cleared to return from the PUP list by mid-season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Young, who torn the ACL and MCL of his right knee last November, is conservatively being projected to activated at some point in the 2022 season, but the standout defensive end appears to be tracking toward a return sooner than Washington anticipated at the onset of training camp. The 23-year-old has already been participating in defensive line drills and change-of-direction work, leaving Washington optimistic that he'll receive full clearance at some point between Weeks 5 and 9.
Aug 23, 2022
Placed on reserve/PUP list
The Commanders placed Young (knee) on the reserve/PUP list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Young is still recovering from a mid-November ACL tear and was already ruled out for the regular-season opener, so this move doesn't come as a surprise. The 2020 No. 2 overall pick will miss a minimum of four games and will be eligible to return for Week 5 against the Titans.
Jul 29, 2022
Ruled out for season opener
Coach Ron Rivera relayed that Young (knee) won't play in Week 1 against the Jaguars, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young is recovering from a mid-November ACL tear, and it sounds like the defensive end still has many hurdles left to clear in his recovery considering his coach has already ruled Young out more than a month before the season. Per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post, Rivera added that Young will "probably" start the regular season on the PUP list. If Young isn't removed from the PUP list prior to the regular season, he will miss a minimum of four games.
Jul 27, 2022
Could miss most of camp
Coach Ron Rivera expects Young (knee) to miss more practice time than Washington's other players on the PUP list, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
While this isn't the best sign, it doesn't mean Young can't be ready in time for Week 1. The second overall pick in the 2020 draft is finishing up his rehab from the ACL tear he suffered in mid-November.
Jul 26, 2022
Placed on PUP
Young (knee) is on the PUP list for the start of training camp, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft suffered an ACL tear in mid-November of a disappointing second season. He still has a shot to be ready for Week 1, though this isn't the best start. Young was named Defensive Rookie of the Year after his initial season, leading one of the best defenses in the league. Washington slipped to a bottom-five unit last year, struggling even before Young tore his knee.
Jun 15, 2022
Likely starting season on PUP list
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday that Young (knee) will "more than likely" begin training camp on the PUP list, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2020 first-round pick suffered a right ACL tear during Week 10 last year, and by all accounts remains on track in his rehab. There was optimism that he'd possibly be available for Week 1, but it appears like Washington will be cautious with their star defender in an effort to avoid any potential setbacks this offseason. Young has nine career sacks across 24 appearances, and when healthy, he and fellow first-round pick Montez Sweat will form one of best passing rushing duos in the NFL.
Jun 1, 2022
Not practicing yet
Young (knee) was spotted without a knee brace during OTAs on Wednesday, but he did not participate in on-field drills, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Young made his way onto the practice field during 11-on-11 drills after shedding his knee brace, per Pete Hailey of NBC Sports Washington, it looks like he still hasn't been cleared to actually handle team reps. The 2020 first-round pick is working his way back from a torn right ACL suffered Week 10, and by all accounts he remains right on track in his rehab. Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports that coach Ron Rivera declined Wednesday to offer a specific timetable for Young's return to practice, but it sounds like there's some reason to be optimistic about the pass rusher's chances of taking the field Week 1.
Jun 1, 2022
Participating in 11-on-11s
Young (knee) was a participant in Wednesday's 11-on-11s portion of practice, Pete Hailey of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
The defensive end was fired up to make his way onto the field and was able to go without a brace on his surgically repaired knee. His ability to participate in the full portion of practice is a big milestone in his recovery. Young appears to be on the right track to be ready to go for the 2022-2023 campaign.
May 31, 2022
Shows up for OTAs
Young (knee) is present for Washington's second session of OTAs Tuesday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Young is rehabbing his torn right ACL with the Commanders, though he won't return to on-field work until a later date. Though the 2020 first-round pick doesn't yet have a clear timetable to resume practicing, his recovery is by all accounts continuing on schedule.
May 24, 2022
Away from team during OTAs
Young (knee) is rehabbing away from the team during OTAs, Grant Paulsen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Young suffered a torn ACL in Week 10 against the Buccaneers and underwent surgery at the end of November. The 2020 No. 2 overall pick has being progressing well throughout rehab during the offseason, but he still doesn't have a return timetable for on-field activities.
Apr 25, 2022
Attacking rehab, doing well
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said Monday that Young (knee) is doing "real well" and it's great to see him at the team facility and attacking the rehab process, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
Young suffered a torn ACL in Week 10 against the Buccaneers and underwent surgery Nov. 22. The 2020 No. 2 overall pick was able to begin jogging in mid-February and appears to be making substantial progress, but Rivera says the dominant pass rusher still doesn't have a timetable to return to on-field activities, per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington. Young's rehab is currently being overseen by Washington's new head athletic trainer Al Bellamy, according to Ben Standig of The Athletic.
Feb 13, 2022
Making progress
Young (knee) is now jogging and believes he could be ready for training camp, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young suffered a torn ACL in Week 10 against the Buccaneers and underwent surgery on Nov. 22. His status for the beginning of next season was and still is up in the air, but it sounds like Young is optimistic about his chances of being ready to compete in time.
Nov 27, 2021
Undergoes successful surgery
Young had successful ACL surgery on Monday, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young suffered a torn ACL during Washington's Week 10 win over the Buccaneers. The 2020 No. 2 overall pick finished his second season in the NFL with 26 tackles and 1.5 sacks across nine games. He's expected to make a full recovery, but his rehab will likely stretch into next year's training camp and could even impact his status for the beginning of the 2022 campaign as well.
Nov 16, 2021
Moved to IR
Young (knee) was placed on IR on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Young's move to the IR was a formality after being diagnosed with a torn ACL on Monday. 2020's No, 2 overall selection will set his sights on getting healthy for the 2022 season. In a corresponding move, Washington signed fellow defensive lineman, Daniel Wise from the practice squad to the active roster.
Nov 15, 2021
Torn ACL confirmed
Coach Ron Rivera confirmed Monday that the knee injury Young suffered in Sunday's win over Tampa Bay was indeed a torn ACL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Young's injury overshadows what was the best win of the season for Washington. The second-overall selection in the 2020 draft will miss the remainder of the season, and his recovery could stretch into next season as well. Young finishes his sophomore season with just 26 tackles and 1.5 sacks in nine games.
Nov 14, 2021
Could have suffered torn ACL
Young (knee) might have suffered a torn ACL, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Washington will wait for a full battery of tests, but if the diagnosis is confirmed, that would knock the star defender out for the rest of the season.
Nov 14, 2021
Ruled out Sunday
Young (knee) has been ruled out of Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Young refused to get on the cart and was helped off the field before eventually departing the gridiron. There's no question his absence represents a big blow to Washington's defense, and this will open up more playing time for the likes of James Smith-Williams or Olubunmi Rotimi.
Oct 14, 2021
Finally tallies sack
Young managed three tackles (one solo), one sack and a forced fumble during Washington's loss to New Orleans in Week 5.
ANALYSIS
Young finally managed to notch his first sack of the season, but there's no doubt that his performance through five weeks has been disappointing for IDP managers. After managing 7.5 sacks as a rookie, Young has failed to put together much in the way of consistency to begin his sophomore season. He will need to log a better showing during the Football Team's upcoming contest against Kansas City.
Jul 9, 2021
All set for Year 2 breakout
Young was impressive at June minicamp and appears ready to take a step forward in his second pro season, Sam Fortier of The Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
The second overall pick from last year's draft enjoyed a stellar rookie campaign, finishing the regular season with 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and a touchdown in 15 games. Young didn't participate in the voluntary portion of Washington's offseason program, but his return for June minicamp proves he's healthy and in good shape. He may soon emerge as an annual threat to lead the NFL in sacks.
Jan 10, 2021
Records 7.5 sacks as a rookie
Young, who logged three tackles in Washington's playoff loss to the Buccaneers on Saturday, finished the 2020 regular season with 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks and four forced fumbles.
ANALYSIS
Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Young was limited late in Saturday's game with what's being described as a mild ankle sprain. It's the sort of injury that would have been an issue for the pass-rusher had Washington advanced, but the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft will now have the entire offseason to heal up and prepare for his second year as a pro. Looking ahead to next season, Young, who turns 22 in April, will continue to be a key passing-rushing cog on Washington's stout front four, while working in a starting defensive end role.
Dec 27, 2020
Comes up with strip-sack
Young had four tackles (three solo), a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in Sunday's 20-13 loss to Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Young recovered his own strip-sack early in the third quarter, keeping Washington in the game after the Panthers had moved the ball down to the red zone with a 20-3 lead. It took a while for any rally to get going, but Young and the rest of the defense certainly did their part to give the offense a shot at a comeback. While his 6.5 sacks through 14 games might seem slightly disappointing for a No. 2 overall pick, Young has made some huge plays in December, including a 47-yard fumble return for touchdown in the Week 14 win over San Francisco. He should have plenty of to impact the game in Week 17, as Eagles QB Jalen Hurts has attempted 30, 44 and 39 passes in his three starts, giving up nine sacks and six fumbles (two lost).
Dec 14, 2020
Scores first NFL touchdown
Young had six tackles (two solo), two pass defenses, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovered for a touchdown in Sunday's 23-15 win over the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Young dominated the first half, starting with a sack in the first quarter. He then forced a fumble in the second quarter, and DL Da'Ron Payne scooped it up for Washington. A few minutes later, the two players switched roles, with Payne knocking the ball loose on a sack and Young returning it 47 yards for a touchdown. The rookie also had a hand in some key tackles and pass breakups late in the game, so it's probably safe to call this his best work yet as a pro. Now up to 5.5 sacks through 12 games, Young has a good chance to add to his total in Week 15, as Seattle's Russell Wilson has taken the second-most sacks (40) of any QB this year.
Nov 9, 2020
Notches sack against G-Men
Young collected one tackle during Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Giants, that being a sack of Daniel Jones.
ANALYSIS
Even on an afternoon in which the No. 2 overall draft choice yielded just one total tackle, he still somehow found a way to get to the quarterback, taking down Jones for a second-quarter sack. Young had entered Week 9 amidst a four-game sackless streak, though a groin injury suffered Week 3 against Cleveland may have contributed to the drought. The Ohio State product was forced to exit Week 3 while also sitting out the subsequent game against Baltimore, and he had been without a sack in his first three games back from the injury. Now having returned to the sack column, Young focuses his attention on a Week 10 road trip to Detroit.
Oct 26, 2020
Collects six tackles in win
Young finished with six tackles (five solo) in Sunday's 25-3 victory over Dallas.
ANALYSIS
Young ended the contest tied for the team lead with six tackles, the best performance of his young career. The defensive end was on the field for 82 percent of Washington's defensive snaps.
Oct 22, 2020
Ready to rock
Young (groin) was a full participant during Thursday's practice, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Young has managed through the groin injury ever since he suffered the issue in Week 3 against Cleveland, so the fact that he's been cleared this early in the week is a positive sign. The rookie played in 92 percent of defensive snaps last week, so expect a similar workload for Young now that he's been cleared for Sunday's game against Dallas.

Groin remains bothersome
Young (groin) was limited in practice Wednesday, John Keim of ESPN NFL Nation reports.
ANALYSIS
Young missed Week 4 with a groin injury, and the rookie second-overall pick evidently still isn't fully over that injury. He played 92 percent of Washington's defensive snaps last week, so barring a setback, Young should be out there Sunday against Dallas.

Returns Week 5
Young (groin) is listed as active Sunday against the Rams.
ANALYSIS
After a one-game absence due to a moderate groin strain, Young is back in action after going through a DNP/LP/FP practice regimen this week. Through his first 10 quarters as a pro, the 2020 first-round selection has eight tackles and 2.5 sacks to his credit.

Likely to play Sunday
Young (groin) is expected to suit up for Sunday's game against the Rams, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
In Week 3, Young was knocked from the contest with what eventually was diagnosed as a moderate groin strain. After sitting out last Sunday, he followed a DNP/LP/FP practice regimen in advance of this Sunday. Notably, Friday's full practice likely swayed Washington to activate the 2020 first-round pick. Assuming he's active, Young will look to add to the 2.5 sacks that he logged in roughly the first 10 quarters of the season.

Puts in limited practice
Young (groin) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young wasn't able to practice Wednesday and missed Week 4 due to his groin injury, so to see him back on the field signifies a notable step in the right direction. Still, Washington may hold out to see the rookie second overall pick go through full practice reps before clearing him for Sunday's game against the Rams.

Remains sidelined by groin
Young (groin) didn't practice Wednesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young missed last week's loss to Baltimore with the groin injury he suffered in Week 3, and he'll need to ramp up his practice participation in a hurry to suit up Sunday against the Rams. The rookie second overall pick has seen his momentum grind to a halt due to this injury after racking up 2.5 sacks in his first two games.

Ruled out for Sunday
Young (groin) won't play in Sunday's game against the Ravens, Kyle Stackpole of Washington's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Ron Rivera said the team is taking a "day-by-day" approach with Young, but it isn't a great sign that the rookie was unable to practice in any capacity this week. With DT Matthew Ioannidis (torn biceps) also suffering an injury last week and now expected to miss the rest of the season, Washington's impressive D-line has taken a major hit. It does sound like Young is expected back at some point in October, if not for Week 5 against the Rams.

Sidelined at practice
Young (groin) is not practicing Thursday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Young looks to be trending in the wrong direction for Sunday's contest against the Ravens due to a moderate groin strain sustained Week 3. If the rookie first-round pick is indeed forced to miss Week 4, Ryan Kerrigan would be the favorite to receive increased defensive snaps.

Likely to sit Week 4
Young was diagnosed Wednesday with a moderate groin strain and is expected to be sidelined for Washington's Week 4 game versus Baltimore, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Before tweaking his groin in Washington's Week 3 loss to Cleveland, the No. 2 overall pick was off to a fast start to his rookie season, totaling eight tackles, 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble. While Young was seemingly fortunate to avoid a Grade 3 groin strain, Washington is labeling him as week-to-week, suggesting that he could miss additional action beyond the Ravens game. Ryan Kerrigan will likely pick up more reps in Young's stead, serving as Washington's main edge rusher opposite Montez Sweat.

Will undergo MRI
Young (groin) is set to have an MRI on Monday, Josina Anderson of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Young related via his personal Twitter account Sunday that his injury is "nothing major." Undergoing an MRI doesn't necessarily contradict the rookie, but at the very least the team is looking to rule out anything serious. The results of his MRI should be available Tuesday at the latest, and either way, his practice status will likely be closely monitored all week leading up to Sunday's matchup versus the Ravens.

Injury doesn't look serious
Young (groin) appears to have avoided a major injury, Ryan Homler of NCB Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
Young exited Sunday's loss to the Browns in the second quarter due to a groin injury and didn't return, but he said via his personal Twitter account after the contest that the issue is "nothing major." While an official timetable for the rookie first-round pick's return remains undisclosed, it's at least encouraging to see that he appears to have avoided the worst-case scenario.
Sep 27, 2020
Ruled out Sunday
Young (groin) has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Young needed to be carted off the field in the second quarter due to the injury, evidencing the severity of the injury. With the rookie out, Ryan Kerrigan is in line to see a large uptick in snaps. Expect the team to update Young's status in the coming days.
Sep 14, 2020
Dominant in debut
Young recorded two tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble in Sunday's 27-17 win over the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
All of Washington's starting defensive linemen were first-round picks, and they dominated the Eagles' banged-up offensive front Sunday en route to an upset win. Young lived up to the hype, too, as he had no issue adjusting to the NFL ranks. The second-overall pick added two quarterback hits and strip-sacked Carson Wentz in the first half. Look for Young to carry the momentum into another favorable matchup against a sub-par Cardinals offensive line in Week 2.

Back in action Sunday
Young (hip) practiced with the starting defense Sunday, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
Young missed nearly a week of practice with this hip injury, but he has returned to the field to prepare for his rookie season. The 21-year-old defensive end rounds out what is one of the more intriguing defensive fronts in the league, lining up next to Ryan Kerrigan, Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne and Montez Sweat -- all former first-round picks.
Aug 24, 2020
Still not practicing
Young (hip) did not participate in Sunday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Young dressed in full pads and worked with a trainer off to the side Sunday. Coach Ron Rivera said the team "may be a little bit more cautious than we need to be" when it comes to the No. 2 overall pick's recovery. A timetable for Young's full return yet remains undisclosed.
Aug 20, 2020
Bothered by hip
Young is dealing with a hip flexor, Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Young was held out of Thursday's practice and could miss a few more sessions, but there hasn't been any suggestion his injury is serious. The No. 2 overall pick should provide a big boost to the Washington pass rush, joining a defensive line with Ryan Kerrigan, Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne and Matthew Ioannidis. The impressive collection of talent should allow for a wealth of one-on-one opportunities coming off the edge, but it also means Young may start his career in a rotation, potentially limiting the IDP/tackle upside.
