To join 49ers' practice squad
Ferrell is slated to sign with San Francisco's practice squad, Matt Zenitz of CBSSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell spent the offseason with Washington but was cut by the team prior to Week 1. He then inked with the Chargers' practice squad and was elevated Week 5 against the Commanders, making one assisted tackle, before being cut Oct. 14. The veteran defensive end now looks slated to provide depth for a 49ers defense that has already lost star playmakers Nick Bosa (knee - ACL) and Fred Warner (ankle) for the year.
Aug 26, 2025
Cut loose by Washington
Ferrell was released by the Commanders on Tuesday, Zach Selby of the team's official website reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell appeared in all three preseason contests with Washington, compiling four total tackles (two solo) and a pass defensed. The defensive lineman recorded 26 total tackles (11 solo), including 3.5 sacks, while also adding a forced fumble over 14 regular-season contests with the Commanders in 2024. Ferrell will now look for another opportunity elsewhere, potentially even with an active roster.
Mar 15, 2025
Will return to Washington
The Commanders are re-signing Ferrell to a one-year contract, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell started the first 10 games in which he played with Washington last season before working in a rotational role over the team's final four regular-season contests. He did see more defensive snaps in the playoffs, but after recording a sack in each of his first two contests of the campaign, he had only 1.5 more sacks over his final 15 games (including the postseason). The Commanders signed fellow defensive end Deatrich Wise Wednesday, so the club should have good depth along its defensive line in 2025.
Feb 1, 2025
Ends up in rotational role in 2024
Ferrell finished the 2024 regular season with 26 tackles (11 solo), including 3.5 sacks, along with a forced fumble over 14 contests.
ANALYSIS
Following four seasons with the Raiders and one with San Francisco, Ferrell joined Washington on a one-year contract last March. The 2019 first-round draft selection had his highest defensive snaps shared in the first two weeks of the campaign, but he missed Weeks 3-5 with a knee injury. Upon Ferrell's return, he gradually downgraded to a lesser role, and he didn't log more than 32 percent of the Commanders' defensive snaps in any game after Week 12. Ferrell did see slightly more work in the playoffs, but given his modest production overall, it wouldn't be surprising if Washington chooses not to explore re-signing the soon-to-be free agent.
Oct 20, 2024
Will play against Carolina
Ferrell (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
A knee injury has kept Ferrell off the field for three games this season, but he was able to return for Week 6 against the Ravens. He was a limited participant in practice all week, and while he is unlikely to be 100 percent, he will suit up for Sunday's contest. Ferrell has logged eight tackles (five solo), including 2.0 sacks, over three regular-season games.
Oct 11, 2024
Ready for Week 6
Ferrell (knee) has no injury designation ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Ravens, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell was able to practice in a limited fashion both Thursday and Friday after logging a DNP to begin the Commanders' week of practice. The 2019 first-round pick has recorded four total tackles, including 2.0 sacks, across two games this season. Expect Ferrell to serve as one of Washington's top edge rushers now that he's past his knee issue.
Oct 10, 2024
Limited participant Thursday
Ferrell (knee) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, according to Washington's official site.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell has missed the last three games for the Commanders with a lingering knee injury, but he could make his return this week as he inches towards a full practice. The defensive end's true designation for Sunday against the Ravens should become clearer after Friday's practice.
Oct 4, 2024
Won't play vs. Cleveland
Ferrell (knee) did not participate in Friday's practice and has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell injured his knee in the lead up to Week 3, and the 2019 first-round pick will now miss a third consecutive game as a result. He gave himself a chance at suiting in Week 5 after logging a limited practice session Thursday, but his inability to practice Friday indicated that he still has a ways to go before seeing in-game action. Ferrell's next opportunity to suit up will be Week 6 against the Ravens on Oct. 13.
Oct 2, 2024
Cleared from injury report
Ferrell (knee) is not listed on the Commanders' injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell missed Washington's last two games, but his absence from the injury report suggests he's back to full health and should suit up in Week 5 against the Browns. His return should boost the Commanders' defensive front and pass rush.
Sep 25, 2024
Will remain out
Ferrell (knee) will not play Sunday against the Cardinals, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell missed the Commanders' Week 3 win over the Bengals on Monday night and is now set to miss his second straight contest. The veteran's presence will be missed, as he already has 2.0 sacks on the season, through their first two games.
Sep 21, 2024
Not playing Week 3
Ferrell (knee) has been ruled out ahead of Monday's game against the Bengals, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell popped up on the injury report Thursday with a knee injury. While he was able to practice in a limited capacity Friday, the issue is severe enough where the 2019 first-round pick will be held out for Monday's contest, and his next chance at suiting up will be Week 4 against the Cardinals. Jamin Davis and Javontae Jean-Baptise are candidates to fill in for Ferrell as the second starting defensive end opposite Dorace Armstrong (chest) for Monday's game.
Sep 16, 2024
Another sack in Week 2
Ferrell recorded two solo tackles, including 1.0 sacks, in Sunday's 21-18 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell was able to secure a sack for the second straight week to open the 2024 season, bringing down Daniel Jones in the third quarter. The 27-year-old signed with Washington in the offseason, compiling four solo tackles, including 2.0 sacks, in his first two games with the team.
Sep 15, 2024
Will play Sunday
Ferrell (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell was added to the Commanders' injury report Friday after not practicing due to a knee injury. However, it appears his inactivity Friday was simply precautionary, and he should be full go versus New York. During Washington's 37-20 loss to Tampa Bay in Week 1, Ferrell played 34 of 64 defensive snaps and recorded two solo tackles, including a sack.
Sep 13, 2024
Pops up with knee injury
Ferrell (knee) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's divisional matchup with the Giants, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell popped up on the Commanders' injury report Friday as a non-participant in practice due to a knee issue, despite practicing in full both Wednesday and Thursday. If Ferrell's knee injury stops him from suiting up in Week 2, expect Javontae Jean-Baptiste to work as one of Washington's first-team edge rushers.
Sep 9, 2024
Logs sack in loss
Ferrell recorded two total tackles (both solo), including 1.0 sack during Sunday's 37-20 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
The first-year Commander was the only player to sack Baker Mayfield on Sunday, getting after Tampa Bay's quarterback in the third quarter. Ferrell spent his 2023 campaign with the 49ers, appearing in 17 regular-season games and recording 28 total tackles, including 3.5 sacks, and forcing one fumble. The 2019 first-round pick is expected to have a significant role in Washington's pass rush unit in 2024 as the team takes on the Giants in Week 2.
Aug 23, 2024
Swelling problems, ready for opener
Head coach Dan Quinn said Ferrell was dealing with knee swelling during fall camp but will be ready for the season opener, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Quinn also added that Ferrell would've played this week if it were the regular season, hinting that he'll not appear in Sunday's preseason closer against the Patriots. The 6-foot-4 defensive end is still primed to start in Washington's season opener against the Bucs after being traded to the Commanders in March.
Mar 20, 2024
Heading to Washington
Ferrell and the Commanders agreed on a contract Monday.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell spent the 2023 campaign with the 49ers, appearing in all 17 of the team's regular season contests, producing 28 tackles, including 3.5 sacks. The defensive lineman was forced to miss the team's run to the Super Bowl due to a knee injury, but he'll look to pick up where he left off now with the Commanders.
Jan 20, 2024
Lands on IR
The 49ers placed Ferrell (knee) on injured reserve Saturday, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell sustained a knee injury in the 49ers' regular-season finale against the Rams. Despite San Francisco having a bye week as the top seed in the NFC, he was unable to practice in the week leading up to the team's game Saturday against the Packers. Ferrell finishes the season with 28 tackles (15 solo), including 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery over 17 games. In his absence, Alex Barrett and Randy Gregory should see increased opportunities as depth edge rushers behind starters Nick Bosa and Chase Young.
Jan 18, 2024
Won't play in divisional round
Ferrell (knee) has been ruled out for Saturday's playoff matchup versus the Packers, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell is expcted to miss multiple weeks while recovering from a knee injury suffered during the Week 18 contest versus the Rams, which he had to be carted off the field for. After failing to practice Tuesday through Thursday, it's no suprise that the 26-year-old will now miss his first game of the 2023 campaign. Ferrell logged 28 tackles and 3.5 sacks while playing as a rotational defensive end this season. In his absence Saturday, Randy Gregory and/or Robert Beal should see increased playing time behind starting defensive ends Nick Bosa and Chase Young.
Jan 9, 2024
Set to miss some time
Ferrell (knee) is expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell suffered a knee injury in the team's Week 18 loss to the Rams, forcing him to be carted off the field. He will now look to see if he can make it back at some point this postseason, but that would likely require San Francisco to advance multiple rounds.
Jan 7, 2024
Won't return Sunday
Ferrell (knee) has been ruled out for the rest of Sunday's game against the Rams, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell was carted off the field and will not return to the 49ers' regular-season finale. He was one of seven San Francisco players to start all 17 games this season. Ferrell did not record a stat before exiting Sunday's game.
Dec 23, 2023
Cleared to play Monday
Ferrell (ankle) has no injury designation ahead of Monday night's game against Baltimore, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
A situation edge player for San Francisco, Ferrell has 25 tackles (14 solo), 2.5 sacks, 10 quarterback hits, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in his first season with the Niners after joining the team in free agency.
Dec 18, 2023
Suffers ankle injury
Ferrell is dealing with an ankle injury, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell suffered an ankle injury during the team's win over the Cardinals on Sunday, casting doubt on his status for the upcoming matchup against Baltimore. While the 2019 first-round pick is currently considered to be day-to-day, Randy Gregory and Robert Beal should see increased playing time if Ferrell ends up being out.
Mar 15, 2023
Inks one-year deal with Niners
The 49ers agreed to terms with Ferrell on a one-year contract Wednesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
ANALYSIS
Drafted No. 4 overall by the Raiders out of Clemson in 2019, Ferrell has been a colossal bust and had his fifth-year option for 2023 declined by Las Vegas. He'll attempt to get his career off the ground in San Francisco after recording just 10 sacks in 58 games for the Silver and Black. Ferrell should see snaps as a rotational edge piece opposite Nick Bosa.
Apr 29, 2022
Fifth-year option declined
The Raiders declined Ferrell's fifth-year option for 2023 on Friday, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell was the No. 4 overall pick by the Raiders in 2019 and started 26 games over his first two seasons in the NFL. However, he operated as a reserve in each of his 16 appearances during the 2021 campaign and finished with career lows in tackles (14) and sacks (1.5). Las Vegas also opted to decline fifth-year options for Josh Jacobs and Johnathan Abram, who were both also selected in the first round of 2019 Draft, and Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler addressed the situation by saying, "we look forward to working with all three players and we will evaluate each situation individually moving forward."
Sep 15, 2021
Projected for full return
Ferrell was projected to have returned to a full practice Wednesday, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell missed the team's Week 1 matchup against the Ravens with a back injury, but it was reported Tuesday that he would likely be ready for game action soon. Though the Raiders only had a walkthrough Wednesday, Ferrell's projected full return to practice has him on track to make his season debut in Week 2 against the Steelers.
Sep 14, 2021
Expected back for Week 2
Ferrell was sidelined for Monday's contest with a back injury, but he is likely to return for the Raiders' Week 2 matchup against the Steelers, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell was a surprise inactive in Week 1, as he entered the game without an injury designation. He had battled an undisclosed injury in late August, though it's unclear if the issues are related. Regardless, Ferrell appears in line to return to his rotational role along the team's defensive line in Week 2.
Sep 9, 2021
Full participant in practice
Ferrell (undisclosed) was listed as a full participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell was held out of the Raiders' preseason finale due to an undisclosed injury, but he appears to be ready to go ahead of Sunday's season opener against the Ravens. The 24-year-old logged 27 tackles (18 solo) and two sacks in 11 games last year and will compete for snaps with Maxx Crosby early in the season.
Aug 27, 2021
Dealing with undisclosed injury
Ferrell (undisclosed) is day-to-day and might play in Sunday's preseason finale against the 49ers, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The extent of Ferrell's injury is unclear, but it doesn't appear to be serious as the Raiders haven't shut him down completely. The 24-year-old has registered 65 tackles and 6.5 sacks through his first two seasons in the NFL. He will compete for starting reps with Maxx Crosby and Carl Nassib along the Raiders' defensive front.
Dec 30, 2020
Lands on IR
The Raiders placed Ferrell (shoulder) on injured reserve Wednesday, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It was previously announced that Ferrell would likely miss the Raiders' regular-season finale against the Broncos, so this move is not surprising. The 23-year-old will finish his second season in the league with 25 tackles (16 solo), 2 sacks and three passes defensed.
Dec 28, 2020
Likely out Week 17
Coach Jon Gruden said Ferrell (shoulder) isn't expected to play in Sunday's season finale at Denver, Josh Dubow of the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old sustained the injury Week 14 against the Colts, and it appears he'll be sidelined for the final three weeks of the regular season. Assuming he doesn't play Sunday, Ferrell will finish the season with 27 tackles (18 solo), two sacks and two forced fumbles in 11 games.
Dec 24, 2020
Ruled out for Saturday game
Coach Jon Gruden confirmed Thursday that Ferrell (shoulder) has been ruled out for Las Vegas' Week 16 matchup against the Dolphins, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell was unable to suit up last Thursday night against the Chargers, either, having proven unable to rehabilitate on a short week after sustaining his shoulder injury Dec. 13 against the Colts. The 2019 No. 4 overall draft choice has just two sacks on the season, both coming Week 13 against the Jets. He also generated eight QB hits over his four preceding games before the injury.
Dec 16, 2020
Ruled out for Thursday's game
Ferrell (shoulder) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Chargers, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With the Raiders on a short week, Ferrell was unable to recover from the shoulder injury he sustained last week against the Colts. Arden Key and Carl Nassib will fill in for Ferrell at defensive end, while the 2019 first-round pick will set his sights on healing up for a potentially pivotal Week 16 matchup with Miami.
Dec 13, 2020
Leaves with shoulder injury
Ferrell won't return to Sunday's game against the Colts after suffering a shoulder injury.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell is coming off the best performance of his career, as he posted two strip-sacks in last week's win over the Jets. However, he suffered a shoulder injury during Sunday's AFC clash. He'll need to make a quick recovery before Thursday's matchup against the Chargers. Arden Key likely will start at defensive end if Ferrell misses additional time.
Dec 9, 2020
Huge performance against Jets
Ferrell recorded seven tackles (four solo), two strip-sacks and a pass breakup in Sunday's 28-24 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
The Raiders underperformed in a game where they were heavily favored. However, Ferrell was a bright spot. After failing to post a sack through his first nine games of the year, Ferrell strip-sacked Sam Darnold twice, and the Raiders recovered each loose ball. It was a monster performance for the 2019 first-round pick, and he finished with a season-high 84 percent snaps hare. He'll look to build on that effort against the Colts in Week 14.
Dec 2, 2020
Ready to rock
Ferrell (undisclosed) was absent from Wednesday's injury report.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell was a surprise scratch for Sunday's game against the Falcons, as the absence could've been related to conditioning with the Clemson product coming off the reserve/COVID-19 list Nov. 26. Despite missing last week's game, Ferrell was back with his team at practice Wednesday, and he's expected to assume his usual rotational role on the defensive line for Sunday's upcoming game against the Jets.
Nov 26, 2020
Pulled off COVID list
Ferrell was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gutierrez expanded his report by noting that coach Jon Gruden was noncommittal Wednesday surrounding Ferrell's status for Week 12. The 2019 No. 4 overall draft choice has yet to notch a sack over 402 defensive snaps this season after he collected 4.5 last year in his debut campaign out of Clemson. Week 12 offers a matchup against a Falcons offensive line that surrendered a season-high eight sacks last Sunday to the Saints.
Nov 18, 2020
Tests positive, likely out Week 11
Ferrell (illness) has tested positive for COVID-19 and is expected to miss Sunday night's game against the Chiefs, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell, who the Raiders placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, is expected to miss at least one game due to the requisite clearance protocols associated with testing positive. Starting safety Lamarcus Joyner landed on the reserve list as a close contact of Ferrell, so he could gain clearance in time to suit up Sunday.
Nov 17, 2020
Lands on COVID-19 list
Ferrell (undisclosed) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old either tested positive for the virus himself or has been in close contact with an infected individual. Ferrell will be unavailable until he clears the league's COVID-19 protocols.
Jun 1, 2020
Bulking up in offseason
Ferrell has bulked up to 275 pounds as part of his offseason training regimen, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2019 fourth-overall pick is coming off an inconsistent but encouraging rookie campaign, in which he accumulated 38 total tackles, 4.5 sacks and five defended passes. Now eyeing a step forward in Year 2, Ferrell has focused his offseason training on bulking up 13 pounds and mastering tape study of opposing offensive linemen. "You wouldn't even recognize me," the 23-year-old said. Ferrell is locked in for a starting role for Las Vegas in 2020, and he could find himself on the radar of IDP fantasy leagues if he's indeed able to progress in his development.
Jan 28, 2020
Logs 4.5 sacks in 2019
Ferrell posted 38 tackles, 4.5 sacks and five pass breakups over 15 games in 2019.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell was viewed by many as a reach at fourth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, but he started every game he was healthy and accrued 15 quarterback pressures. Although fellow rookie Maxx Crosby stacked up 10 sacks, Ferrell drew plenty of attention from pass-blockers to open up those lanes. The 22-year-old still managed to produce a signature game in Week 10 against the Chargers when he piled up eight tackles and 2.5 sacks, but he totaled just one sack over the final seven games. Ferrell will retain his starting role in 2020.
Oct 18, 2019
Ready for Sunday
Ferrell (concussion) won't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game at Green Bay, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferrell sat out Week 5 due to the concussion but is good to go against the Packers coming out of the Raiders' bye week. The rookie first-round pick had 10 tackles (five solo) and one sack through his first four games.
