Davis Mills Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Bills vs Texans game on Thursday with our National Football League injury report.Nov 17, 2025
Solid showing in second start
Mills completed 26 of 41 passes for 274 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while adding two rushes for 14 yards in the Texans' 16-13 win over the Titans on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mills put together another solid performance in his second start in place of C.J. Stroud (concussion) despite being subjected to plenty of pressure from what had been a porous Titans defense. Mills was taken down four times, but he also completed passes to eight different players while displaying good command of the offense. Mills capped the afternoon in fine fashion by leading a game-winning nine-play, 48-yard drive, and he's likely to draw another start in a Week 12 Thursday night home matchup against the Bills since Stroud may not be ready to play due to the short turnaround.
Nov 13, 2025
Positioned as starter for Week 12
Mills will start Sunday's road contest against the Titans with C.J. Stroud (concussion) having been ruled out Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills will draw at least one more start while Stroud works his way through the concussion protocol, and he could find himself in a similar position Week 12, when the Texans will face a short week of preparation before taking on the Bills on Thursday Night Football. After compiling 312 total yards and three touchdowns during Houston's comeback win over the Jaguars in Week 12, Mills has made a case for himself as a fantasy option for QB-needy teams, especially in deeper formats.
Nov 12, 2025
Prepping for another start
Mills is preparing to start Sunday's game at Tennessee, with C.J. Stroud still in concussion protocol and absent from Wednesday's practice, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Stroud reportedly still has concussion symptoms as of Monday/Tuesday, and his continued absence from practice suggests he's still in the earlier phases of the protocol. Mills led a brilliant comeback win over the Jaguars this past Sunday, finishing with 312 total yards and three TDs.
Nov 9, 2025
Leads fourth-quarter comeback
Mills completed 27 of 45 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in Sunday's 36-29 win over the Jaguars. He added 20 rushing yards and a TD on three carries.
ANALYSIS
Making his first start of the season with C.J. Stroud (concussion) unavailable, Mills struggled through three quarters before coming to life in the fourth, hitting Jayden Higgins and Dalton Schultz for TDs before running in a 14-yard score of his own to complete a stunning comeback from a 29-10 deficit. Mills could return to the bench in Week 11 against the Titans if Stroud gets cleared to return, but if he gets a second start he likely won't need to be quite as busy.
Nov 5, 2025
Set for Week 10 start
Mills is slated to start Sunday's game against the Jaguars after Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said Wednesday that C.J. Stroud (concussion) "will be out," Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills entered Houston's 18-15 loss to the Broncos in Week 9 early in the second quarter in relief of Stroud. He finished with an unimpressive line, completing just 17 of 30 passes for 137 yards while rushing twice for seven yards. With Stroud in line to miss at least one more game while working to gain clearance from the concussion protocol, expect the Texans to lean on the strength of their defense and task Mills to hold down the fort as a game manager versus Jacksonville. Mills is only on the fantasy radar as a streamer in deeper formats that allow multiple quarterbacks to be started.
Nov 2, 2025
Called on in relief Sunday
Mills completed 17 of 30 passes for 137 yards in Sunday's 18-15 loss to the Broncos. He added seven rushing yards on two carries.
ANALYSIS
C.J. Stroud was knocked out of the game early in the second quarter and was diagnosed with a concussion, leaving the offense in the hands of Mills for the rest of the afternoon. The fifth-year QB was able to lead four scoring drives for the Texans but wasn't able to get the ball into the end zone, and that lack of TDs proved costly in the end. If Stroud isn't cleared through the concussion protocol in time to return in Week 10, Mills would get his first start of the season against the Jaguars.

Receives one-year extension
Mills and the Texans agreed Tuesday on a one-year, $7 million contract extension, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills had been ticketed for free agency next spring, but for the second September in a row, the Texans have given him some extra security in the form of a one-year extension. The $7 million deal is fully guaranteed, which should ensure that Mills faces no real competition for the No. 2 role heading into 2026. He'll be entering his third straight season as C.J. Stroud's backup and won't be in line for anything more than spot duty so long as Stroud maintains health. Through his first two NFL seasons, Stroud has missed just two games, with both absences coming late in his rookie campaign while he recovered from a concussion.
Aug 9, 2025
Tosses TD on only drive Saturday
Mills completed four of five passes for 50 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 20-10 preseason loss to the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old backup quarterback got the start with C.J. Stroud held out of the Texans' exhibition opener, but Mills played only one drive, which he capped with a 14-yard TD to Braxton Berrios. Mills is set as Houston's No. 2 QB, but it's a role that hasn't led him to much action since Stroud got to town as he's attempted only 75 passes in 10 regular-season games over the last two seasons.
Aug 9, 2025
Expected starter Saturday
Mills is expected to draw the start in Saturday's preseason opener against the Vikings, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
If that is indeed the case, top QB C.J. Stroud would presumably be rested, with Graham Mertz and Kedon Slovis also available to handle snaps versus Minnesota. As the coming season approaches, Mills is set to reprise his role as Houston's No. 2 signal caller.
Jan 7, 2025
Handles bulk role Week 18
Mills completed 12 of 22 passes for 128 yards and rushed three times for 11 yards in Sunday's 23-14 win over the Titans in Week 18.
ANALYSIS
After starting quarterback C.J. Stroud engineered the opening possession, which resulted in a touchdown, the reins were handed to Mills for the rest of the game. He made appearances in three blowouts during the season before guiding the Texans through most of the regular-season finale. Mills completed 20 of 36 passes for 212 yards over his four games played in 2024. Stroud wasn't as consistent in 2024 as during his rookie 2023 season, but it never go to the point where a quarterback change became necessary. The Texans are happy to keep Mills, who has two years of experience under the current coaching regime, as the backup heading into next season.
Dec 27, 2024
Mops up in loss
Mills completed his lone attempt for five yards in Wednesday's 31-2 loss to the Ravens in Week 17.
ANALYSIS
Starting quarterback C.J. Stroud struggled without two of the team's top receivers, Tank Dell (knee) and Stefon Diggs (knee). Add in a struggling ground game -- Joe Mixon was held to under 30 yards for the third time in the last five games -- and the Texans were clearly the inferior team Christmas Day. Mills entered for the final series to essentially run out the clock. Houston already clinched a spot in the postseason, so there is a possibility Mills leads the team in the final game of the regular season, but head coach DeMeco Ryans struck a different tone following the loss. "I think you come back fired up and showing that's not who we are," Ryans told Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. "At the end of the day that's not who we are." The Texans finish up the regular season January 5 at Tennessee, which embarrassed Houston at home in Week 12.
Dec 18, 2024
No longer under the weather
Mills (illness) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Mills was a DNP for Tuesday's walkthrough practice due to an illness. It appears he's past the issue and is on track to serve as Houston's backup quarterback behind C.J. Stroud against the Chiefs on Saturday.
Dec 17, 2024
Dealing with illness
Mills (illness) was estimated as a DNP for Tuesday's walkthrough.
ANALYSIS
Mills appears to be under the weather, which prevented him from participating in Tuesday's walkthrough. He'll have two more chances this week to return to practice ahead of Saturday's game against the Chiefs. Mills has appeared in three regular-season games while serving as the Texans' backup quarterback behind C.J. Stroud.
Sep 23, 2024
Plays in blowout loss
Mills completed seven of 12 passes for 79 yards in Sunday's 34-7 loss to the Vikings in Week 3.
ANALYSIS
Mills replaced C.J. Stroud late in the fourth quarter of the blowout loss. It was his first action of the season.
Sep 4, 2024
Gets one-year extension
Mills and the Texans agreed Wednesday on a one-year, $5 million extension, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills is entering the final season of his four-year rookie contract, so the extension will keep him in the fold through the 2025 campaign. Rapoport adds that the contract contains incentives based on playing time, but the Texans are hopeful that Mills won't be needed for much more than spot duty if franchise quarterback C.J. Stroud can maintain health. Over 34 career regular-season contests, Mills went 5-19-1 as a starter and has completed 573 of 912 attempts (62.8 percent) for 5,955 yards, 35 touchdowns and 25 interceptions while adding 161 yards and two scores on 52 carries. He was used sparingly behind Stroud in 2023 but showed improved efficiency this preseason, completing 18 of 26 passes for 191 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.
Aug 22, 2024
Returns to practice
Mills (ribs) returned to practice Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills missed last Saturday's preseason game against the Giants with bruised ribs sustained during a preseason tilt the previous week against the Steelers. He looked sharp, per Wilson, delivering touchdown passes to John Metchie and Xavier Hutchinson. It's unclear if Mills will suit up for Saturday's preseason finale against the Rams. One thing that's certain is a healthy Mills will enter the regular season as the backup to C.J. Stroud.
Aug 17, 2024
Bothered by ribs
Mills is dealing with an injury to his ribs and may not play in Saturday's preseason game against the Giants, Aaron Wilson of SportsTalk 790 reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills reportedly missed practice Thursday and was limited throughout the week. An absence Saturday would free up more snaps for Case Keenum and Tim Boyle once C.J. Stroud is removed from the game.
Aug 10, 2024
Logs most QB snaps
Mills completed 8-of-13 attempts for 89 yards and was sacked twice in Friday's 20-12 preseason win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Mills, who entered after starter C.J. Stroud played the first two series, was in the game for the most snaps of the four quarterbacks that saw action. He's locked in as the backup quarterback, although that was the case in 2023 but the Texans used Case Keenum to start games late in the season when Stroud was unavailable.
Aug 2, 2024
Sharp in preseason debut
Mills started the Texans' 21-17 preseason loss to the Bears on Thursday and completed 10 of 13 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown while also netting no gain on two carries.
ANALYSIS
Mills, who's entering the final year of his rookie contract and is battling veteran Case Keenum for the No. 2 job this summer, made a strong opening case for his candidacy Thursday. The 2021 third-round pick completed a six-yard pass to Xavier Hutchinson on the first play from scrimmage and went on to cap off the game-opening 13-play, 74-yard march with a nine-yard touchdown toss to tight end Teagan Quitoriano. Mills completed two drives overall before giving way to Keenum, who was productive in his own right. The job battle is likely to last through the remainder of the preseason schedule, with both players offering the benefit of plenty of experience and solid mobility.
Jan 23, 2024
Enters final year of contract
Mills has one year remaining on his rookie contract entering the 2024 offseason. He completed 18 of 39 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns in 2023.
ANALYSIS
Mills operated as the primary backup when C.J. Stroud was healthy and starting, but when the No. 1 quarterback couldn't go Weeks 15 and 16 due to a concussion, the Texans used Case Keenum as the starter. Both backup QBs are under contract for 2024, which sets up a similar situation.
Dec 24, 2023
Needed in relief against Cleveland
Mills completed 15 of 32 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 36-22 loss to the Browns. He also completed a two-point conversion.
ANALYSIS
Case Keenum got the start for the Texans, but Mills was seeing snaps in the first quarter on certain packages, and when the team fell behind 36-7 after Keenum's second interception of the day, Mills worked the entire fourth quarter and produced a couple of scoring drives while working against Cleveland's backup defenders. It was still a more effective performance than Keenum managed, and should C.J. Stroud not be able to clear the league's concussion protocol in time for a Week 17 meeting with the Titans, Mills could get the start.
Dec 18, 2023
Attempts Hail Mary
Mills was sacked for a 10-yard loss on his only play of Sunday's 19-16 overtime win over the Titans in Week 15.
ANALYSIS
Mills entered the game to throw a Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half but was unable to avoid a sack. He had been the replacement when C.J. Stroud (concussion) got hurt in Week 14 but was bypassed as Sunday's starter in favor of Case Keenum.
Dec 16, 2023
Bypassed for starting nod
Mills is slated to remain the Texans' No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Titans while Case Keenum draws the start in place of C.J. Stroud (concussion), who has been ruled out for the Week 15 contest, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Stroud wasn't able to practice in any fashion this week and has yet to clear the five-step protocol after sustaining the concussion in the Texans' 30-6 loss to the Jets last Sunday. Though Mills has served as the top backup to Stroud all season and completed one of five pass attempts for four yards in relief of the rookie signal-caller late in last week's loss, the Texans had him and the 35-year-old Keenum split reps in practice throughout Week 15 prep. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, Keenum received the majority of the first-team reps, and he apparently acquitted himself well enough in those practices to get the starting nod over Mills, despite having been inactive as an emergency No. 3 quarterback for each of Houston's first 13 games of the season. Depending on how Keenum performs Week 15, he could end up sticking ahead of Mills as the No. 2 option moving forward once Stroud clears the protocol.
Dec 16, 2023
Could give way to Keenum
With C.J. Stroud (concussion) listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Titans, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston indicates via league sources that Case Keenum is expected to start at QB for the Texans versus Tennessee rather than Mills.
ANALYSIS
We'll await further context ahead of Sunday's 1:00 ET kickoff, but it appears as though the Texans could turn to Keenum in Week 15 in the event that Stroud is indeed unavailable. After Stroud was forced out of last weekend's 30-6 loss to the Jets, Mills completed one of five passes for four yards. However, based on Wilson's report, it seems as though 7-6 Houston could be leaning toward going with Keenum this Sunday.
Dec 10, 2023
Could start with Stroud in protocol
Mills completed one of five passes for four yards after replacing C.J. Stroud (concussion) in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 30-6 loss to the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed after the game that Stroud has entered the NFL's concussion protocol, so Mills would get an opportunity to make his first start of 2023 in Week 15 against the Titans if Stroud fails to gain clearance. Mills made 26 starts over the previous two seasons and has a career 33:25 TD:INT. Wide receiver Nico Collins (calf) also exited the loss to the Jets after the Texans lost Tank Dell (lower leg) for the season in the previous game.
Dec 4, 2023
Enters for two snaps
Mills completed his lone pass attempt for 18 yards in Sunday's 22-17 win over Denver in Week 13.
ANALYSIS
Starting quarterback C.J. Stroud was ordered to the sidelines for evaluation following a quarterback sneak during the fourth quarter. Mills was needed for two plays before Stroud reentered the contest. Mills handed off to Dameon Pierce then fired an 18-yard strike to Nico Collins. He's played just three snaps all season.
Nov 20, 2023
Enters for one snap
Mills went 1-for-1 for two yards in Sunday's 21-16 win over the Cardinals in Week 11.
ANALYSIS
Mills was needed for one play after starting quarterback C.J. Stroud was drilled by safety Jalen Thompson. Stroud tried to wave off trainers, who took him to the sideline for evaluation. He returned one play later and completed at 18-yard pass to Tank Dell.
Aug 28, 2023
Slated to back up Stroud
Coach DeMeco Ryans named C.J. Stroud the Texans' starting QB on Sunday, per Deepi Sidhu of the team's official site. As a result, Mills is slated to open the coming season as Houston's No. 2 signal-caller.
ANALYSIS
Though Stroud and Mills began training camp splitting first-team reps, Stroud (the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft) subsequently took them over, setting the stage for Sunday's announcement. Since entering the league as a third-rounder in 2021, Mills has logged 26 regular-season starts, including 15 last season, but he'll now move into a backup role behind the franchise's high-profile rookie QB.
Aug 10, 2023
Mixed results behind Stroud
Mills completed 9 of 12 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown but lost a fumble in Thursday night's 20-9 win over the Patriots in the preseason opener.
ANALYSIS
Mills entered the game after rookie first-round C.J. Stroud played Houston's first two drives and finished with just two completions for 13 yards and an interception. Although Mills moved the ball better in his four series under center, including a six-yard touchdown toss to end the first half, he too committed a turnover during his time on the field. While Stroud is undoubtedly Houston's long-term plan at quarterback, Mills will nonetheless strive to eliminate similar miscues in next Saturday's exhibition outing versus Miami.
Aug 6, 2023
Loses first-team reps
Mills did not operate with the first-team offense during 11-on11 drills for a second consecutive practice Saturday, Deepi SIdhu of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills and C.J. Stroud have been splitting reps the first week of camp, but the pattern changed Friday. That's when Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans told Sidhu that Stroud has developed since the beginning of camp. "With C.J., what I've seen is he's definitely made adjustments," the coach said. Mills will get his opportunities during Thursday's preseason opener against the Patriots, but recent events indicate Stroud has the edge in the quarterback competition.
Jun 13, 2023
Part of QB competition
Mills will compete with C.J. Stroud for the top quarterback job heading into training camp, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports. "We'll see where their process goes in training camp and see as the competition continues," Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday. "We'll see who separates themselves."
ANALYSIS
Mills and Stroud, who was selected with the second overall pick in this year's draft, have rotated reps with the first-team offense throughout OTAs and minicamp, including Tuesday's opening day of mandatory camp. The Texans view Stroud as a franchise quarterback to replace the departed Deshaun Watson. Quarterbacks selected in the top five of drafts typically start Week 1; 11 of 17 since 2011 have opened seasons as the No. 1 QB. Over the last two seasons, Houston ranked 31st in QBR (33.3), much of that with Mills under center. He's started 26 games for the Texans in 2021 and 2022, throwing 33 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in those starts.
May 23, 2023
Not on trade block
The Texans aren't interested in trading Mills, who was the first quarterback through drills Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a crowded QB room with Mills (26 career starts) joined by 35-year-old Case Keenum (64 starts) and 21-year-old C.J. Stroud. The latter is the headliner after going second overall in the draft, and it's worth noting that the rookie was second through drills (before Keenum) at the first day of OTAs. There's little question Stroud will take snaps this year, but it is possible new coach DeMeco Ryans gives Mills a chance to keep his starting job for at least the early portion of the season.
Apr 28, 2023
May be on outs as starter
Mills will remain on the roster after the Texans selected C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on Thursday, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
In theory, either Mills or Case Keenum, who was added during the offseason, could start Week 1, but neither is viewed as a long-term answer at the position. The temptation to make Stroud the Week 1 starter will be great, but so will the patience to make sure the Ohio State product is ready. A new head coach and offensive coordinator means the old offense that Mills led is not an important factor for head coach DeMeco Ryans, as he evaluates the rostered quarterbacks. If Stroud isn't under center Week 1, it's a safe bet that he'll eventually take over at some point during the season.

Writing on wall
Mills will remain on the roster after the Texans selected C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on Thursday, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Jan 8, 2023
Resurgent effort to close season
Mills completed 22 of 38 passes for 298 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in the Texans' 32-31 win over the Colts on Sunday. He also rushed once for six yards and threw a game-winning two-point conversion pass.
ANALYSIS
Mills saved his best for last, putting together his first three-touchdown tally of the campaign while falling just short of his third 300-yard effort of 2022. The second-year signal-caller even led Houston on an improbable comeback that culminated in a 28-yard touchdown toss to Jordan Akins and subsequent two-pointer to the veteran tight end that served as the difference in the game. Mills hit Brandin Cooks and Akins for 11- and 19-yard scores earlier in the game as well, but the young quarterback's future in Houston is somewhat uncertain, given the team has the No. 2 pick in April's draft and also may be undergoing a head coaching change this offseason.
Jan 1, 2023
Struggles badly again
Mills completed 22 of 40 passes for 202 yards against Jacksonville on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
It's been a brutal season for Mills, who once again rotated with running special quarterback Jeff Driskel (3 of 4 for nine yards, two carries for seven yards), and with his remaining snaps Mills just couldn't get the ball downfield. The Texans play the Colts in Week 18, so hopefully Mills can get on track against the team he threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns against in Week 1.
Dec 24, 2022
Throws late touchdown for win
Mills completed 17 of 28 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Saturday's 19-14 win over the Texans. He added four rushes for eight yards.
ANALYSIS
Mills had very little production for the majority of the game, but he led two scoring drives late in the contest during which he accounted for 103 of his yards. That culminated with a six-yard, game-winning touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks with only three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. While Mills played a key role in the Texans' victory, he has failed to top 200 passing yards in four consecutive matchups while totaling five touchdowns.
Dec 18, 2022
Three total TDs in OT loss
Mills completed 12 of 24 passes for 121 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and rushed five times for 25 yards and another score in the Texans' 30-24 overtime loss to the Chiefs on Sunday. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Mills was far from efficient, but his surprising three-touchdown tally was certainly a boon for those who may have rolled with the second-year signal-caller in large-field DFS contests or as a desperation play on their season-long teams. Mills continued to split time with Jeff Driskel under center but to a very minor degree, as the latter put up only four attempts. The pair of scoring connections came in conjunction with tight ends Teagan Quitoriano and Jordan Akins, giving Mills his fifth two-touchdown performance through the air this season. The 2021 third-round pick is likely to remain the primary quarterback in a Week 16 divisional road matchup against the Titans on Saturday afternoon.
Dec 18, 2022
Expected to be part of two-QB setup
Mills is slated to start Sunday's game against the Chiefs, but he's expected to cede snaps to backup Jeff Driskel while the Texans implement a two-quarterback system, league sources tell Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In his return from a two-game benching last weekend in Dallas, Mills surprisingly helped keep the 1-11-1 Texans competitive in a 27-23 loss to one of the NFC's top teams. However, Mills wasn't used as a traditional starter in his return, as he played exactly half of the snaps and finished with 16 completions on 21 attempts for 175 yards and an interception in the loss. Driskel, meanwhile, played half the game as well and attempted only six passes, though he was highly involved as a runner (seven carries for 36 yards). Assuming the rough timeshare remains in place Sunday, both Mills and Driskel are tough to rely on as fantasy options while neither receives a full snap count.
Dec 11, 2022
Manages game in loss to Dallas
Mills completed 16 of 21 pass attempts for 175 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 27-23 loss to the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Mills returned as Houston's starting quarterback after being benched for the last two games. He accounted for the majority of the team's pass attempts but did give way to Jeff Driskel on several occasions -- including for its lone passing touchdown of the game. Mills will presumably remain the Texans' starter moving forward, but it's fairly clear there is a lack of trust in him under center.
Dec 7, 2022
Back as starting QB
Coach Lovie Smith confirmed Wednesday that Mills will start at QB for the Texans this Sunday against the Cowboys, Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
As a result, Kyle Allen -- who started the Houston's last two games -- will return to a backup role. Per DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com, Smith noted that the team expects "two weeks of watching from the sideline to help" Mills, who has recorded 2,144 passing yards and an 11:11 TD:INT ratio through 10 outings this season. In his return to the starting lineup, the 2021 third-rounder represents an option at his position for those in deeper fantasy formats, as well as for managers in need of Week 14 signal-caller depth, with six NFL teams on bye.
Dec 7, 2022
Set to reclaim starting job
The Texans plan to return Mills to the starting quarterback role for Sunday's game at Dallas, league sources tell Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston.
ANALYSIS
Mills started the Texans' first 10 games before being benched in favor of Kyle Allen ahead of Week 12 after completing 61.9 percent of his throws for 6.5 yards per attempt and an 11:11 TD:INT. Allen didn't fare any better in double-digit losses to the Dolphins and Browns the past two weeks (59 percent completion rate, 5.3 YPA, 2:4 TD:INT), so the Texans will turn the offense back over to Mills with the hope that he can provide some sort of lift. Expect head coach Lovie Smith to confirm Mills' return to the top of the depth chart later in the week.
Nov 25, 2022
Officially benched
Coach Lovie Smith announced Friday that Kyle Allen will start at quarterback over Mills against the Dolphins on Sunday, Deepi Sidhu of Texans Radio reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills has lost his starting job in the midst of a five-game losing streak for the Texans. The second-year quarterback's play has deteriorated lately, as he threw a costly pick-six in Houston's Week 11 loss to the Commanders and reached 170 yards only once in the last four games. Even if Mills gets the job back from Allen at some point, Houston will almost certainly draft a new starting quarterback after the season, marking the end of Mills' tenure as the starter.
Nov 23, 2022
Not expected to start Sunday
Kyle Allen is slated to handle first-team QB reps instead of Mills at practice Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, while coach Lovie Smith declined to name a starting QB during his Wednesday news conference, Allen is expected to draw the assignment Sunday against the Dolphins. The 1-8-1 Texans have lost five games in a row, while Mills has recorded 2,144 passing yards and an 11:11 TD:INT ratio in 10 outings this season.
Nov 22, 2022
Change in the air
Houston head coach Lovie Smith suggested changes are coming, which could include replacing Mills, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports. "Made some decisions on how we're going to go forward. Like all changes, anything that we do from week to week, we've got to talk to the players before we talk to you," the coach said.
ANALYSIS
Smith faced questions about Mills after Sunday's loss to the Commanders -- just like he did following a Week 10 loss to the Giants. The coach wasn't ready to comment immediately following Sunday's game, but his words Monday implied Kyle Allen could replace Mills. "Kyle can make all of the throws," Smith said. "He has a history of good play in the NFL. And he's a veteran, he's been in this situation. He gets rid of the ball quickly. There's a lot of good to like about what Kyle has done." Mills had 35 passing yards in the first half against the Giants, then just 22 yards and a pick-six in the loss to Washington.
Nov 20, 2022
Struggles again in Week 11 loss
Mills completed 19 of 33 passes for 169 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions while adding five carries for 10 yards and another score in the Texans' 23-10 loss to the Commanders on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mills once again struggled to get anything going through the air, throwing a pick-six on the Texans' second offensive play and then helming five first-half drives that ended in punts. The second-year signal-caller was a tad more productive in the second half after Houston was already down multiple possessions and finally got the team into the end zone himself with a four-yard touchdown run with 3:19 remaining. However, given yet another lackluster performance, questions surrounding Mills' job security will undoubtedly continue to brew ahead of a Week 12 road matchup against the Dolphins.

No change at QB planned
Houston head coach Lovie Smith said there are no plans to replace Mills as the starting quarterback, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills threw for a respectable 319 yards in a Week 10 loss to the Giants, but there are signs he's regressed in 2022 and the questions are being asked. Through nine games, Mills is completing fewer of his passes (62.3 percent) than last season (66.8), generating less yardage (6.7 yards per attempt) than in 2021 (6.8), and fielding a worse passer rating as a second-year veteran (81.67) than he did as a rookie (88.8). Smith has been willing to pull underperforming starters before but has a different standard for quarterbacks. "I just don't think it's time," Smith said. "Simple as that. Quarterback position's a little bit different." Third downs have been a problem -- Houston's converted just 31 percent in such situations -- and the Texans entered the game 22nd in touchdown percentage in the red zone. They'll be further down the list after managing just one TD in six red-zone trips Sunday, including four in the fourth quarter that resulted in two field goals and two turnovers, including one that ended in a Mills

Tops 300 yards in loss
Mills completed 22 of his 37 passes for 319 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 24-16 loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Mills topped 300 passing yards for the second time in his last four games and effectively spread the ball to a number of Texans' receivers. His lone touchdown came midway through the third quarter, when he connected with Nico Collins for a 12-yard score. Mills also matched his season-best mark of five completions of more than 20 yards, finding Chris Moore deep on three of those occasions. While it was a relatively positive performance, Mills threw an interception for the fourth consecutive game, with Sunday's coming at an inopportune time deep in Giants' territory in the fourth quarter. For the season, he now has 11 touchdowns as opposed to nine interceptions.
Nov 3, 2022
Offsets TDs with interceptions
Mills completed 13 of 22 passes for 154 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Texans' 29-17 loss to the Eagles on Thursday night. He also rushed three times for 18 yards.
ANALYSIS
In fairness to the second-year quarterback, he was not only facing an unenviable matchup, but doing so while operating without the starting wideout duo of Brandin Cooks (personal) and Nico Collins (groin). Mills still found a way to keep the Texans competitive most of the game with some significant help from rookie running back Dameon Pierce (139 rushing yards), tossing two- and 13-yard touchdown passes to Teagan Quitoriano and Chris Moore, respectively, in the first half. However, Mills was also responsible for snuffing out Houston's last-gasp opportunity, throwing his second interception at the Eagles' three-yard line with just over two minutes remaining on an apparent miscommunication with Phillip Dorsett. Mills now has tossed four interceptions in the last three games and fallen short of 200 passing yards in two straight, but he could at least have Cooks back for a Week 10 road matchup against the Giants considering Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports the veteran wideout is expected back at te

Falls back to earth in Week 8
Mills completed 17 of 29 passes for 152 yards with a touchdown and an interception in Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Titans.
ANALYSIS
He also picked up eight rushing yards on three carries. Coming on the heels of his first 300-yard performance last week, Mills barely reached half that total, and he only salvaged his performance a little with a three-yard TD toss to Dameon Pierce with 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Mills will face an even tougher challenge in Week 9 at home against the undefeated Eagles.
Oct 23, 2022
Tops 300 yards in loss
Mills completed 28 of 41 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in Sunday's 38-20 loss to the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
The second-year QB posted season highs in attempts, completions and yards as the Texans were forced to play catch-up for most of the fourth quarter. Mills, and the whole Houston offense, isn't really built to engage in shootouts, but they may be able to keep things closer in a Week 8 AFC South clash with the Titans.
Oct 9, 2022
Uninspiring in win
Mills completed 16 of 24 pass attempts for 140 yards and rushed twice for two yards in Sunday's 13-6 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Mills led Houston to its first victory of the regular season, but likely didn't lead any fantasy teams to glory with a mediocre stat line. On a positive note, the 23-year-old did not turn the ball over after throwing four interceptions over his previous two outings. The Texans enter a bye week following Sunday's win, so Mills will return to action against the Raiders on Oct. 23.
Oct 2, 2022
Mixed performance Sunday
Mills completed 26 of 35 passes for 246 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 34-24 loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Mills saw his team go down 21 points early on, but he helped it rally to close the gap in the second half. The signal caller threw an eight-yard touchdown to Rex Burkhead in the third quarter, before finding wideout Brandin Cooks for an 18-yard score to begin the fourth. However, with a pair of interceptions on the day, including a badly overthrown pass on Houston's first drive, it was hardly a clean performance from Mills. In fact, he's now thrown a pair of picks in back-to-back games ahead of Week 5's matchup versus the Jaguars.
Sep 25, 2022
Two costly picks
Mills completed 20 of 32 passes for 245 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday's 23-20 loss against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Mills was decent for much of the game, and he spread targets around to many of his pass catchers. He led the Texans on a pair of touchdown drives, the first of which he capped with a four-yard touchdown toss to Jordan Akins. However, he also threw an interception with just over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter that led directly to the game-winning field goal for the Bears. Mills has reached 240 passing yards in two of three games this season, but he also has only three total touchdowns.
Sep 18, 2022
Modest numbers in Week 2 loss
Mills completed 19 of 38 passes for 177 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the Texans' 16-9 loss to the Broncos on Sunday. He also rushed twice for one yard and committed two fumbles recovered by Houston.
ANALYSIS
Mills' lackluster numbers tell the tale of a typically difficult encounter with the Broncos defense, but to his credit, the second-year signal-caller helped keep Houston in the game until the waning seconds. Mills couldn't come through on his team's last-chance possession, however, with the Texas actually losing a yard on four plays before turning it over on downs. Mills continues to be a work in progress, but he seemingly has the talent to improve as the season unfolds and will look to up his numbers in a Week 3 visit to the Bears next Sunday.
Sep 11, 2022
Solid effort in Week 1 tie
Mills completed 23 of 37 passes for 240 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Texans' 20-20 tie with the Colts on Sunday. He also rushed twice for minus-1 yard and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Mills nearly turned in a mistake-free effort and was key in the Texans outperforming expectations to open the season. The second-year signal-caller once again relied the most on trusted veteran Brandin Cooks, but both of his touchdown passes went to recent addition O.J. Howard on throws of 16 and 22 yards in the second and third quarters, respectively. Mills also spread the ball around to complementary wideout targets Nico Collins and Chris Moore for another five of his completions, and he'll aim to carry over his season-opening momentum into a tough Week 2 road matchup against the Broncos next Sunday.
Aug 25, 2022
Plays into second half Thursday
Mills completed six of 10 passes for 58 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Thursday's 17-0 preseason win over the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
You wouldn't know it from his modest stat line, but Mills actually played the entire first half and the first drive of the second half for Houston, capping his final possession of the game with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Chris Moore. The Texans did most of their damage on the ground, which is something the team failed to find success at during Mills' rookie season. If rookie running back Dameon Pierce -- who capped Houston's opening drive with a one-yard touchdown -- can breathe life into the Texans' rushing attack in 2022, that could free up more space for the Mills-led Houston passing game.
Aug 25, 2022
Expected to play in preseason finale
With coach Lovie Smith planning to use Thursday's preseason finale against the 49ers as something of a dress rehearsal, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Sports, Mills could see extensive action in the contest.
ANALYSIS
Once the Texans' starting QB gets his work in Thursday, Kyle Allen and Jeff Driskel will be available to close out the game for the team. Mills will then pivot to preparing for Houston's season opener against the Colts, with Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins in line to serve as his top two WR options and the squad's backfield in line to feature the trio of Dameon Pierce, Marlon Mack and Rex Burkhead.
Aug 20, 2022
Plays first half Friday
Mills completed 10 of 17 passes for 96 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Texans' 24-20 preseason win over the Rams on Friday night.
ANALYSIS
The second-year signal-caller started and played the entire first half, connecting with Nico Collins on an 18-yard touchdown pass with one second before halftime for Houston's only points over the first two quarters. While Mills didn't turn the ball over, his performance was far from remarkable, but there's no immediate threat to his chances of opening the season as the starter. Having logged action in the Texans' first two preseason contests, it remains to be seen if Mills will get any sort of final tune-up in Thursday night's home exhibition finale against the 49ers.
Aug 19, 2022
More snaps coming Friday
Mills is expected to see an increase in playing time Friday against the Rams after playing two series in the preseason opener last week, Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site reports. "We wanted to give him limited work, just getting him out there on the football field was what we were looking for," Houston head coach Lovie Smith said.
ANALYSIS
Mills and the first-team offense floundered last week, going three and out on two drives. It should be noted that Houston didn't have three of its projected starting five on the offensive line. More personnel -- on the offensive line and at wide receiver -- are expected to play Friday.
Aug 14, 2022
Plays two series Saturday
Mills completed all three of his pass attempts for 14 total yards in Saturday's 17-13 preseason win over the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Mills failed to guide the Texans' first-team offense to a single first down throughout his only two series at the helm Saturday, but he also was without his No. 1 wide receiver in Brandin Cooks. Mills figures to see a bit more playing time in the team's second preseason contest against the Rams on Friday.
Aug 13, 2022
In line for some drives Saturday
Mills is slated to play the first few possession of Saturday's preseason contest versus the Saints, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills is unlikely to have Brandin Cooks and Rex Burkhead at his disposal in the Texans' exhibition opener, but he should get some work in with running backs Marlon Mack and Dameon Pierce and wide receivers Nico Collins and Chris Conley, among others. Behind Mills, Kyle Allen is unavailable after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, leaving all remaining quarterback reps to Jeff Driskel on Saturday.
Aug 11, 2022
On pace to play Saturday
Coach Lovie Smith said Mills is in line to play in Saturday's preseason contest against the Saints, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to this statement, Smith also noted backup quarterback Kyle Allen won't play Saturday due to personal reasons, leaving Mills and Jeff Driskel as the only Texans available at the position this weekend. Smith didn't mention how much action Mills can expect to see, but it's safe to say the breakdown of snaps and possessions likely will tilt in Driskel's favor, so as not to risk Mills' health.
Aug 1, 2022
Improving weaknesses
Mills studied his throw chart from his rookie season and has worked on improving his weaker areas, Mark Lane of USA Today Texans Wire reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills played his best football down the stretch last season, going 2-3 with a 9:2 TD:INT in his final five starts after an 0-6 start to his career. He's looking to build on his promising finish by eliminating his weaknesses, and Mills hopes he will be able to make every throw asked of him after addressing his weak spots.
Apr 11, 2022
Seems to have coach's confidence
Texans coach Lovie Smith said Monday that Mills is the team's quarterback, while offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton used the term "potentially our starting quarterback," Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2021 third-round pick won just two of 11 starts last season, but both came in the final five weeks -- a stretch where he completed 68.4 percent of his passes for 7.4 YPA with nine touchdowns and only two interceptions. While he may have done enough to earn his shot as the Week 1 starter, Mills doesn't offer much fantasy upside for single-QB leagues, as he rarely runs (18 carries for 44 yards last year) and is stuck on one of the worst rosters in the NFL. The Texans have had a quiet offseason in terms of veteran additions, mostly settling for discount additions like RB Marlon Mack and WR DaeSean Hamilton. They did sign Brandin Cooks to an extension, locking in Mills' favorite target from last year, and the draft will bring more talent after trades netted Houston extra picks in Rounds 1, 3 and 4. The problem for Mills is that one of those picks could be a QB who threatens his starting spot, be it this summer or later down the line.
Jan 9, 2022
Leads comeback effort
Mills completed 23 of his 33 passes for 301 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 28-25 loss to the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Mills led a vaillant comeback attempt, bringing the Texans back from down 21-0 to ultimately lose by only a field goal. He connected with five different pass catchers for gains of at least 20 yards-- two of which went for touchdowns. While Deshaun Watson's future with the team remains unclear, Mills has made the case to remain the starter in 2022 with the opportunity to prove himself as the long-term quarterback in Houston. Though his Week 17 performance was uninspiring, Mills started the team's last five games and averaged 7.4 yards per attempt with nine touchdowns compared to only two interceptions.
Jan 2, 2022
Little production in losing effort
Mills completed 21 of 32 pass attempts for 163 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 23-7 loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Mills maintained his recent string of accuracy, finishing with a completion rate above 60 percent for the fourth straight game. The rookie quarterback wasn't able to take many shots downfield, as the Texans' inconsistent offensive line struggled to contain the 49ers' pass rush. The 167 total yards (four rushing yards) were the signal caller's lowest yardage output since Week 7. Mills has shown some flashes at times this season, but inconsistent play keeps him off of most fantasy radars heading into a tough matchup against Tennessee next Sunday.
Dec 26, 2021
Another strong performance
Mills completed 21 of 27 passes for 254 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 41-29 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Mills continued to show signs of being a capable quarterback in the NFL, tallying lengthy touchdown passes of 41 and 13 yards. He was aided by a strong rushing offense and defensive performance from the Texans, though he also showed the ability to push the ball down the field effectively by completing four passes of more than 20 yards. Since taking over as the Texans' full-time starting quarterback in Week 14, Mills has thrown five touchdowns as opposed to only one interception while throwing for more than 250 yards in two of three games.
Dec 19, 2021
Solid showing in win
Mills completed 19 of 30 passes for 209 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the Texans' 30-16 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. He also rushed once for two yards.
ANALYSIS
The rookie signal-caller didn't put up anywhere as pretty a stat line as in the Week 14 loss to the Seahawks, but Mills was more than serviceable on the road against a division opponent. Mills connected with favorite target Brandin Cooks for both of his touchdown tosses, with the speedster doing almost all the work on the second, a 43-yarder in the fourth quarter. Mills appears to have benefited plenty from the experience he garnered while starting in Tyrod Taylor's stead earlier in the season, but he may have an uphill battle trying to add to his recent solid body of work in a Week 16 home date versus a stingy Chargers secondary.
Dec 12, 2021
Hot start not enough versus Seattle
Mills completed 33 of 49 passes for 331 yards and a touchdown while adding eight yards on two rushing attempts in Sunday's 33-13 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Mills hit his first 14 passes for 150 yards, including a five-yard touchdown to Brevin Jordan to cap the opening drive. He cooled down after Brandon Cooks was tackled just short of the goal line, missing the next two throws as the Texans had to settle for a game-tying field goal. It was all Seahawks after that, though Mills continued to pile up passing yards with the Houston running game failing to get anything going. Having been named the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, Mills will look to build on this promising performance in Week 15 against the Jaguars.
Dec 10, 2021
Officially named starting QB
Coach David Culley named Mills the Texans' starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Seahawks and the rest of the season, Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old filled in as the starter while Tyrod Taylor was sidelined by injury earlier in the campaign, and the third-round rookie will now be atop the depth chart for the final five games of the season. Mills doesn't offer much fantasy upside, as he's completed 65 percent of his passes on 223 attempts for 1,406 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight contests.
Dec 8, 2021
Likely starting Sunday, maybe beyond
Mills is expected to start Sunday's game against the Seahawks and may be the Texans' starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Tyrod Taylor (wrist) took part in Wednesday's practice but might only be the backup even if he's medically cleared for Sunday. The veteran has been no better than Mills, who tossed six touchdowns and seven interceptions in his six starts (Weeks 3-8) earlier this season, averaging a meager 209.2 passing yards per game.
Dec 5, 2021
Replaces injured Taylor
Mills completed 6 of 14 passes for 49 yards in Sunday's 31-0 loss to the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Mills replaced teammate Tyrod Taylor late in the third quarter after he injured his wrist. Although coach David Culley said after the game that Taylor could have returned, he also noted concern over Taylor's ability to grip the ball, ultimately allowing Mills to finish the contest. In his relief role, Mills struggled to get anything going, but his numbers were rather similar to Taylor's prior to exiting. Given Taylor's injury, it'll be worthwhile to monitor his practice involvement this week, as Mills would stand to benefit should he be limited in advance of next Sunday's matchup versus the Seahawks.
Nov 4, 2021
Returning to backup duty
Mills' teammate, Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) is in line to start Sunday's game against the Dolphins, The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills had been handling the team's QB duties since Taylor was injured in Week 2, and since then has passed for 1,357 yards, with seven TDs and eight picks. The 2021 third-rounder will revert to a backup role now that Taylor is in line to come off IR, while Jeff Driskel will serve as the team's No. 3 signal-caller. Deshaun Watson remains on Houston's roster, but has been made inactive on game days by the team all season.
Oct 31, 2021
Three hundred-yard mark
Mills completed 29 of 38 pass attempts for 310 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Rams on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't the cleanest game for Mills -- a lot of his production could be described as the 'garbage time' sort and he withstood a lot of pressure (five sacks, nine quarterback hits), but he deserves credit for keeping his composure through the struggles and fighting for gains late in the game. His numbers from Sunday raise his box score on the year to 1,357 passing yards, seven touchdowns and eight interceptions (67 percent completed, 6.5 yards per attempt) and could give the Texans more to think about with Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) nearing his return to the field. Taylor's production was much cleaner in his two starts before injury, so the question of which starts could come down to whether the Texans want to play competitively (Taylor) or evaluate prospects for the future (Mills). Houston in any case heads to Miami in Week 9.
Oct 29, 2021
Starting again Week 8
Mills was named Texans' starting quarterback for Sunday's game versus the Rams, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) is back at practice this week and is closing in on his return from injured reserve, but he's not quite ready to be activated. As a result Mills will make his sixth straight start under center for Houston. The rookie third-round pick has completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,047 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions while also losing one fumble.
Oct 24, 2021
Shut down by Cardinals
Mills completed 23 of 32 passes for 135 yards in Sunday's 31-5 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
While the rookie quarterback managed a decent completion percentage, his 4.2 yards per attempt provided a better indication of how little success Mills had moving the Texans' offense. He's now failed to reach 200 passing yards in three of his five starts, managing only a 5:7 TD:INT during that stretch, and with Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) ready to begin practicing again, Mills' stint as Houston's starter could end as soon as Week 8 against the Rams.
Oct 20, 2021
Set for another start
Coach David Culley confirmed that Mills will start Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Culley also relayed that veteran QB Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) could practice some this week and potentially return to action as soon as Week 8, but Mills will get at least one more start while Taylor is sidelined. Additionally, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston notes that Culley maintains that Taylor will reclaim his starting job when healthy, but that won't happen until the signal-caller's hamstring is "completely right," with an eye toward avoiding re-injury.
Oct 17, 2021
Struggles in blowout loss
Mills completed 29 of 43 passes for 243 yards and two interceptions in Sunday's 31-3 loss to the Colts. He added five yards on two rushing attempts.
ANALYSIS
After topping the 300-yard mark through the air last week, Mills regressed closer to the subpar results he showed in his first three appearances, failing to lead Houston into the end zone in the blowout loss. Once Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) is ready to return, the rookie third-round pick will be relegated back to a bench role. That could happen as soon as Week 7 against the Cardinals.
Oct 3, 2021
Four picks against Bills
Mills completed 11 of 21 passes for 87 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions in Sunday's Week 4 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
There were reports prior to the matchup that the Texans planned to open the offense up for Mills. That didn't go according to plan, as Mills threw a pair of interceptions in both the first and second half. He also averaged only 4.1 yards per attempt and his longest completion of the day went for 16 yards. While it was certainly a poor outing, Mills will likely get at least one more start with Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) on injured reserve for a Week 5 matchup against the Patriots.
Sep 29, 2021
Shackles to be removed
The Texans plan to open up the offense for Mills this week against the Bills, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills made his first NFL start Week 3 on just three days preparation. As such, the coaching staff placed limitations on the rookie quarterback. Houston head coach David Culley believes the staff went too far in trying to protect Mills, who threw for 168 yards and a touchdown without turning the ball over. "Moving forward, we'll just get back to doing the things that we had started doing for that first game-and-a-half when Tyrod (Taylor) was our starting quarterback," the coach said. The Texans may want to open up the offense, but they may have no choice against Buffalo, which averages 31.3 points per game. In whatever shape the game takes, it would be helpful if Mills has a competent running game. Houston's averaged just 2.8 yards per carry the last two weeks.
Sep 23, 2021
Holds his own in Week 3 loss
Mills completed 19 of 28 passes for 168 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Texans' 24-9 loss to the Panthers on Thursday night. He also rushed once for no gain and recovered a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Making his first NFL start on a short week against a defense that was ranked No. 1 on a yards-per-game basis against both the run and pass, Mills turned in an admirable albeit pedestrian fantasy performance. Mills took four sacks and nine hits overall as Carolina's defense pinned its ears back frequently in the second half, but he demonstrated plenty of intestinal fortitude. He also displayed good rapport with the trio of Brandin Cooks, Jordan Akins and Anthony Miller in particular, hitting the latter for his one touchdown pass of the night. With Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) on injured reserve, Mills projects to be under center again in a Week 4 road battle against the Bills on Sunday, Oct. 3.
Sep 21, 2021
Confirmed as Week 3 starter
Mills will start at quarterback Thursday against the Panthers, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Tyrod Taylor is on track to sit out Thursday and likely additional contests after going down with a hamstring injury in Sunday's loss to the Browns. That leaves Mills, a rookie third-round pick, in line for a multi-game run atop the depth chart. Mills' initial work in relief of Taylor wasn't promising; he completed eight of 18 attempts for 102 yards, one touchdown and one interception while fumbling once on 33 snaps against Cleveland. For as long as the Texans can keep things close with the heavily favored Panthers, look for them to favor a run-heavy game plan, but a negative game script could lead to some high passing volume for Mills. Houston is expected to elevate Jeff Driskel from the practice squad to back up Mills, as coach David Culley has already indicated that Deshaun Watson won't be active Week 3 in spite of Taylor's absence.
Sep 20, 2021
On track to fill in for Taylor
With Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) expected to miss time, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Mills is line to start Thursday night's game against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Though Taylor's looming absence has not yet been officially confirmed by the Texans, the veteran QB isn't expected to play Thursday, at a minimum, and an IR stint could be in the cards for him. As a result, with Deshaun Watson not being considered as an option to replace Taylor, Mills is in line to start versus Carolina, while Jeff Driskel is a candidate to be elevated from the practice squad to Houston's active roster to serve as the team's backup signal caller in Week 3.
Sep 19, 2021
Struggles in first taste of action
Mills came into Sunday's 31-21 loss to the Browns for Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) and completed eight of 18 passes for 102 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also netted minus-1 yard on two carries and committed a fumble that was recovered by Houston.
ANALYSIS
Mills unsurprisingly had his share of struggles upon unexpectedly having to enter the contest, but he was able to redeem himself to an extent with a two-yard touchdown toss to Brandin Cooks in the fourth quarter. The rookie third-round pick could be called on to start Thursday night's Week 3 matchup against the Panthers given the quick turnaround and the notoriously tricky nature of the the type of soft-tissue injury that prompted Taylor's early exit Sunday.
Aug 29, 2021
Uneven against Tampa Bay
Mills completed 10-of-27 pass for 106 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in Saturday's 23-16 loss to Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Mills' two-TD/three-pick night was part of a strange game in which Houston rushed for more than 200 yards, forced three turnovers, and still lost. The rookie quarterback's uneven effort is emblematic of his entire preseason: some good, some bad and not enough to be a starter come Week 1 of the regular season. He's expected to get a chance down the road, but Mills is expected to back up Tyrod Taylor when the Texans host the Jaguars in two weeks.
Aug 22, 2021
Leads six drives, one scoring
Mills went 10-for-16 for 115 yards in Saturday's 20-14 win over Dallas in Preseason Week 2.
ANALYSIS
Mills was under center for six drives between the second and fourth quarters, one of which resulted in point. The rookie quarterback engineered a drive of 70 yards that ended in a field goal. The Cowboys blitzed often during the game, which led to a sack of Mills and an intentional grounding by the rookie. "What's nice is that it's still preseason," Mills told Aaron Reiss of The Athletic. "Dallas did a really good job disguising some of their looks, but that gives us really good practice for the season - communicating with the line on protection, making sure we're on top of everything." None of Houston's quarterbacks distinguished themselves Saturday. The offense was 0-for-10 on third downs and didn't have a drive longer than 23 yards when the first teamers were on the field.
Aug 15, 2021
Preseason performance like camp
Mills completed 11 of 22 passes for 112 yards with one interception in Saturday's 26-7 win over the Packers in preseason Week 1.
ANALYSIS
Mills entered early after starter Tyrod Taylor played one series and threw up a performance much like his action during camp -- some strong throws, some misses and a turnover. Mills did engineer a couple of scoring drives before giving way to Jeff Driskel early in the third quarter, which established the quarterback pecking order entering the regular season. Presuming the Texans are not in competition for a playoff spot, they'll eventually need to get Mills on the field to evaluate him as the starting QB for 2022.
Aug 6, 2021
Throwing picks with regularity
Mills has turned the ball over on most days during sessions and looks slow to process the more competitive periods of practice, according to Aaron Reiss of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Mills began Thursday's session with a sack to begin a drive, then ended it with interception. It should not shock followers that a mid-round quarterback is making ugly plays in camp, but the important thing is if Mills can learn from his mistakes. "As elementary as it sounds, (the key is) not making the same mistake twice," offensive coordinator Tim Kelly said of coaching rookie quarterbacks. "For us as coaches, when we can get that from our players, it shows that they're coachable." The Texans are not expecting Mills to be a starter anytime soon -- that's the job of Tyrod Taylor -- but they will want to evaluate him at some point during the regular season. The organization needs to determine if he's the quarterback of the future, or if they need to expend a first-round pick next season on that player.

Bounces back
Mills looked better in one-on-one and team drills Monday than he did on Saturday, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills threw many interceptions when he stepped in with the first-team offense for red-zone drills Saturday, but he was reportedly more accurate Monday. "I thought he bounced back really well," Texans head coach David Culley said. "We expected that. What that tells me about him is he's not going to get rattled." Mills has been getting increased reps with Tyrod Taylor (personal) away from the team.

Works out with first team
Mills spent time with the first-team offense Saturday, as Tyrod Taylor (personal) was not at practice, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
It was a red-zone day for the Texans, and Mills started well, throwing touchdown strikes to Jordan Akins and Chris Conley. Later, however, he was picked off twice by safety Justin Reid. Houston head coach David Culley took a big picture view, noting it was a good learning experience for Mills, the 2021 third-round draft pick that is expected to back up Taylor and possibly Jeff Driskel.
