Back to practice squad
Johnson reverted to the Patriots' practice squad Friday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
TreVeyon Henderson dominated the touches out of the backfield during the Patriots' 27-14 win over the Jets on Thursday. Terrell Jennings was active after working through a knee injury during the shortened week but didn't end up playing a snap, while Johnson logged eight snaps on offense and turned three carries into six yards. Johnson has been elevated from the practice squad by the Patriots three times this season, which is the max; however, the veteran running back could be signed to New England's active roster if Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) is expected to miss more time.
Nov 13, 2025
Elevated for TNF
The Patriots elevated Johnson from their practice squad ahead of Thursday night's game against the Jets, Evan Lazar of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Lazar, this is Johnson's final elevation, so after Week 11 the running back would need to be signed to the Patriots' 53-man roster in order to suit up for game action. On Thursday, he'll provide the team with backfield depth behind TreVeyon Henderson and Terrell Jennings (knee), assuming he's active. Meanwhile, Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) is slated to miss his third straight contest.
Nov 10, 2025
Reverts to practice squad
Johnson reverted to the Patriots' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played six offensive snaps during Sunday's 28-23 win over the Buccaneers, one more than Terrell Jennings, the latter of whom left the game due to a knee injury. Johnson logged one carry for one yard in Week 10, and with Jennings, Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) and TreVeyon Henderson (knee) all listed as limited practice participants Monday, Johnson could be elevated to the Patriots' active roster for Thursday's AFC East tilt against the Jets.
Nov 8, 2025
Elevated for Week 10
The Patriots elevated Johnson from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has been elevated to the Patriots' active roster for a second consecutive week. He will serve as the RB3 behind TreVeyon Henderson and Terrell Jennings and will also serve as a returner on kickoffs in Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, per Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site. Johnson played five snaps on special teams without showing up on the box score otherwise during the Patriots' Week 9 win over the Falcons.
Nov 3, 2025
Back to practice squad
Johnson reverted to the Patriots' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Johnson joined the Patriots' practice squad Wednesday and was elevated for Week 9 against the Falcons to provide backfield depth in the absence of Rhamondre Stevenson (toe). However, Johnson saw the field for only five snaps on special teams as TreVeyon Henderson and Terrell Jennings served as the clear one-two punch out of the Patriots' backfield. Johnson could be elevated for the Patriots' Week 10 clash against the Buccaneers this Sunday if Stevenson is not cleared to play.
Nov 1, 2025
Elevated for Week 9
Johnson was elevated from the Patriots' practice squad to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
With Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) ruled out for Sunday's contest with the Falcons, Johnson gets the elevation. He will likely share backup work with Terrell Jennings behind TreVeyon Henderson, who is slated to be the Patriots' lead back.
Oct 31, 2025
Could be elevated for Week 9
With Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) ruled out for Sunday's game against the Falcons, Johnson is a candidate to be elevated from the practice squad ahead of Week 9 action, according to Mark Daniels of MassLive.com.
ANALYSIS
For now, TreVeyon Henderson and Terrell Jennings are the only healthy running backs on New England's active roster, but Johnson, Jonathan Ward and Rushawn Baker are all candidates to be elevated from the team's practice squad Saturday. If Johnson ends up getting the call versus Atlanta, he'd be in line to share backup work with Jennings, with Henderson slated to be the Patriots' lead back this weekend.
Oct 29, 2025
Joins Patriots' practice squad
Johnson signed with the Patriots' practice squad Wednesday, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The South Florida product was cut from the Cardinals' practice squad Tuesday, but he's already found a new home in New England. He made on appearance for Arizona this season, rushing once for no yards across 14 offensive snaps. With Antonio Gibson (knee), Lan Larison (foot) and Deneric Prince (Tulsa) all currently on injured reserve, Johnson could be elevated to the Patriots' active roster and play a depth role in the backfield.
Oct 28, 2025
Jettisoned from practice squad
The Cardinals cut Johnson from the practice squad Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson had been elevated for Arizona's loss to the Packers in Week 7, a contest in which he logged one carry for zero yards while playing 14 snaps on offense. For Johnson to now be cut from the practice squad could be a sign that Emari Demercado (ankle) is on track to retake the field in time to face the Cowboys in Week 9.
Oct 20, 2025
Back to practice squad
Johnson reverted to the Cardinals' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Johnson signed with the Cardinals' practice squad Sept. 29 and was elevated for the time in Week 7 against the Packers. He logged one carry for zero yards while playing 14 snaps on offense, which was third behind Bam Knight (34) and Michael Carter (28). With James Connor (foot) out for the year and Trey Benson (knee) on injured reserve, Johnson could be elevated for the Cardinals' Week 9 contest against the Cowboys on Monday, Nov. 3.
Oct 18, 2025
Elevated to active roster
The Cardinals elevated Johnson from the practice squad Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Emari Demercado (ankle) will be sidelined for Sunday's game, so the Cardinals are in need of depth at running back. Johnson has a chance to be active for the first time this season for Sunday's game against the Packers, though he'd likely work behind Michael Carter and Bam Knight.
Sep 29, 2025
Arriving in Arizona
Johnson signed with the Cardinals' practice squad Monday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson failed to make the Ravens' initial 53-man roster in late August but has since found a new home with the Cardinals' practice squad. The South Florida product appeared in 14 games for the Jaguars in 2024, rushing 55 times for 143 yards and catching 12 of 19 targets for 96 yards. He could be elevated to Arizona's active roster at some point this season with James Conner (foot) done for the year.
Aug 27, 2025
Returning to Baltimore
The Ravens signed Johnson to the practice squad Wednesday, Ryan Mink of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson joined the Ravens in early August with the aim of cracking to make the 53-man roster, but he failed to beat out Rasheen Ali for the RB4 spot. Johnson will return to the Ravens on the practice squad and is a candidate to be elevated to the active roster if Ali, Keaton Mitchell, Justice Hill or Derrick Henry were unable to play. Johnson logged 46 carries for 163 yards and two touchdowns while adding five catches (on eight targets) for 26 yards across the Ravens' three preseason games.
Aug 26, 2025
Shown door in Baltimore
The Ravens released Johnson on Tuesday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson carried a heavy workload during the preseason, rushing 46 times for 163 yards (3.5 YPC) and two touchdowns while also catching five passes for 26 yards. He was a longshot to make the 53-man roster due to Baltimore's solid running back room. Johnson should have utility on a practice squad. Last season, the 29-year-old posted 143 yards on 32 carries and 96 yards on 12 receptions through 14 games with the Jaguars.
Aug 3, 2025
Bound for Baltimore
The Ravens signed Johnson on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has six years of NFL experience on his resume, with his best campaign coming in 2021 when he logged 534 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 100 carries during the regular season with Cleveland. He provided depth at RB for the Jaguars last year, recording 143 yards on 32 carries and 96 receiving yards on 12 catches over 14 contests. Johnson also has experience as a kick returner, which can only help his chances of making Baltimore's final roster. Johnson's signing was precipitated by the absence of Marcus Major, who is dealing with a concussion.
Jan 12, 2025
Small role in Week 18
Johnson carried two times for 26 yards and caught one of two targets for zero yards during the Jaguars' Week 18 loss to the Colts.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old received his first carries since Week 11 but played just 12 offensive snaps in the season finale. Johnson finished the season with 32 carries for 143 yards and 12 receptions for 96 yards in 14 contests. He's set to hit free agency during the offseason, and there will likely be limited openings in Jacksonville since Travis Etienne, Tank Bigsby and Keilan Robinson are all under contract for 2025.
Dec 15, 2024
Healthy scratch again Week 15
Johnson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's matchup against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Johnson will be inactive for the third straight game since Jacksonville's Week 12 bye. He played in each of the Jaguars' first 11 contests of the campaign but has fallen behind Keilan Robinson on the depth chart since Robinson returned from IR in mid-November.
Dec 8, 2024
Inactive again Week 14
Johnson (coach's decision) is a healthy scratch for Sunday's matchup versus Tennessee, John Oehser of the Jaguars' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson will be inactive for the second straight week. Prior to Jacksonville's Week 12 bye, the South Florida product had suited up for each of the team's 11 contests and had gotten at least one touch in all but two of those games. However, Johnson appears to be out of the rotation with both Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby healthy and with rookie tailback Keilan Robinson having been activated off IR ahead of Week 13.
Dec 1, 2024
Healthy scratch for Week 13
Johnson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Coming out of a Week 12 bye, the Jaguars are back to full strength in the backfield with Travis Etienne further removed from the hamstring injury that sidelined him for Weeks 7 and 8 and with Tank Bigsby back in action after missing the Week 11 loss to the Lions with an ankle injury. Rookie fifth-round pick Keilan Robinson is also ready to make his NFL debut after coming off injured reserve Nov. 19, and while he's unlikely to have much of a role on offense behind Etienne and Bigsby, his ability to contribute as a return man will be enough for the Jaguars to keep him active over Johnson as the No. 3 back. Johnson had already seen his role dwindle following Etienne's return to action in Week 9, as Johnson earned just four carries and one target while playing 28 total snaps on offense over the Jaguars' last three games before the bye.
Nov 18, 2024
Two touches in blowout loss
Johnson carried twice for three yards during Sunday's 52-6 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old suited up after being considered questionable with a hamstring injury, and he played just 27 percent of the offensive snaps. Johnson has five carries for 12 yards and one reception for 20 yards over the past four games, and he isn't likely to be significantly involved in the offense while Travis Etienne is healthy.
Nov 15, 2024
Set to play Sunday
Johnson (hamstring) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's game in Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played through a hamstring injury this past Sunday versus the Vikings, but despite fellow RB Tank Bigsby (ankle) departing after 10 snaps and one carry, the former didn't earn a touch on four offensive plays. Meanwhile, Travis Etienne dominated the Jaguars backfield to the tune of 12 touches for 43 yards from scrimmage on 30 snaps. With Bigsby ruled out for Week 11, Johnson will back up Etienne, but his usage likely will be limited.
Nov 14, 2024
Remains limited Thursday
Johnson (hamstring) was limited in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has opened the week with back-to-back limited practices due to a hamstring injury, and unless he logs a DNP on Friday, he's expected to play through the issue against the Lions on Sunday. Johnson didn't record a stat across four offensive snaps in Week 10 against the Vikings, and in the two games prior he logged just three carries for nine yards. However, Johnson could see an increased workload in Week 11 if backup running back Tank Bigsby (ankle) is unable to play.
Nov 13, 2024
Limited Wednesday
Johnson (hamstring) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played through his hamstring issue in the Jaguars' Week 10 loss to the Vikings, failing to record a stat across just four offensive snaps. The 28-year-old running back will likely continue playing through the issue in Jacksonville's Week 11 matchup against the Lions unless it worsens over the course of the week.
Nov 10, 2024
Cleared to play Sunday
Johnson (hamstring) is active for Sunday's game against the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was added to the Jaguars' injury report Thursday and was a limited participant in the team's final two practices of the week, but the hamstring issue won't keep him from playing Sunday. He'll be available as a third option out of the backfield behind Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby, with most of Johnson's usage likely to come on passing downs. Etienne made his return from a two-game absence in last week's loss to the Eagles, and Johnson consequently saw his snap share drop to 22 percent, his lowest since Week 5.
Nov 8, 2024
Questionable for Week 10
Johnson (hamstring) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Johnson likely sustained a hamstring injury during practice this week and is now in jeopardy of missing Jacksonville's Week 10 game. He practiced in a limited fashion both Thursday and Friday, but if he's unable to play through the pain Sunday, expect Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby to handle all of the Jaguars' running back duties.
Nov 7, 2024
Working through hamstring injury
Johnson (hamstring) was a limited practice participant Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson may have picked up a hamstring during practice Wednesday or Thursday. His participation in Friday's session will provide clarity on his status for Sunday's game against the Vikings. Johnson has served as the Jaguars' No. 3 running back this season behind Travis Etienne (hamstring) and Tank Bigsby (ankle).
Nov 4, 2024
Reverts to No. 3 role
Johnson carried twice for six yards and failed to catch his lone target during Sunday's 26-23 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old played 13 offensive snaps as Jacksonville's backfield returned to full strength, though that was only slightly less playing time than starter Travis Etienne saw in his return from two-game absence. Johnson should continue to see sporadic opportunities as the Jaguars' depth back while Etienne and Tank Bigsby remain healthy.
Oct 28, 2024
Less involved as No. 2 back
Johnson carried once for three yards and caught one of two targets for 20 yards during Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old once totaled 20 touches in the previous two games with Travis Etienne (hamstring) unavailable, but both of those contests were blowouts. Tank Bigsby dominated the backfield work Sunday as Jacksonville nearly took Green Bay to overtime. Johnson likely won't be fantasy relevant but should continue to see some chances in passing situations until Etienne is back.
Oct 20, 2024
Solid in No. 2 role Sunday
Johnson rushed nine times for 38 yards and brought in three of four targets for 32 yards in the Jaguars' 32-16 win over the Patriots on Sunday in London.
ANALYSIS
With Travis Etienne (hamstring) sidelined, both Tank Bigsby and Johnson bumped up a spot on the depth cart for the London matchup. Johnson played a clear second fiddle to his teammate, but he was effective in both his rushing and pass-catching roles. The veteran is a valuable insurance policy for Jacksonville if Etienne misses extended time, and Johnson would be set to reprise his No. 2 role in a Week 8 home matchup against the Packers if the latter remains out.
Oct 20, 2024
Role could expand sans Etienne
Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson suggested that Johnson is in line to take on a greater role out of the backfield for Sunday's game against the Patriots in London Travis Etienne (hamstring) set to be inactive for the contest, Steve Wyche of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With Etienne set to miss his first game of the season, the Jaguars will keep Johnson, Bigsby and practice-squad call-up Jake Funk active as their three running backs for Week 7. After Etienne exited the Jaguars' Week 6 loss to the Bears after playing just 11 snaps, Johnson (34 snaps) finished with far more playing time than Bigsby (16 snaps), but a negative game script and Johnson's standing as Jacksonville's preferred option on passing downs was likely a significant factor. Though Johnson should still rank as the clear choice ahead of Bigsby on third downs and obvious passing situations, expect Bigsby to serve as the Jaguars' lead runner in Etienne's absence this week. Bigsby is averaging an impressive 7.2 yards per carry on 41 totes this season, though Johnson has been competent in his opportunities on the ground as well (16 carries for 67 yards). Johnson's fantasy utility for Week 7 will likely be mostly limited to deeper PPR leagues.
Oct 13, 2024
Team-high yardage total in loss
Johnson rushed six times for 28 yards and brought in both targets for 16 yards in the Jaguars' 35-16 loss to the Bears on Sunday in London.
ANALYSIS
With Travis Etienne exiting the game in the third quarter with a hamstring injury, Johnson and Tank Bigsby helmed the ground game for the bulk of the second half. Johnson finished with a team-high rushing yardage total despite logging one fewer carry than Bigsby, and the former was also the only one of the two to be targeted in the passing game. The Jaguars are back in action next Sunday in London against the Patriots, and given the uncertain nature of soft-tissue injuries, it's certainly possible Johnson and Bigsby could be sharing backfield duties once more versus New England.
Oct 7, 2024
Three touches Week 5
Johnson rushed once for one yard and caught two of three targets for nine yards during Sunday's 37-34 win against the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Jacksonville split playing time in the backfield fairly evenly, as Johnson played 13 offensive snaps compared to 23 for Tank Bigsby and 22 for Travis Etienne. Bigsby has taken hold of a larger role as the season has progressed, with he and Etienne now appearing to be in a timeshare. Johnson remains locked in as the No. 3 tailback and likely won't have a significant role if the other two can stay healthy.
Oct 2, 2024
Non-factor in loss
Johnson rushed two times for zero yards in Sunday's 24-20 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played 12 of the Jaguars 58 offensive snaps in the contest, behind both Travis Etienne (30) and Tank Bigsby (17). With such limited playing time and touches, the 28-year-old does not hold much fantasy value as the Jaguars third-string running back. Johnson and the Jaguars will square off against the Colts in Week 5.
Sep 25, 2024
Two carries in Week 3
Johnson rushed twice for 12 yards in Monday's 47-10 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played 12 of the Jaguars 71 offensive snaps in the contest, behind Travis Etienne (49) and ahead of Tank Bigsby (9). Like the entire Jaguars offense, the veteran running back was unable to produce much with his opportunities. Johnson should remain far off the fantasy radar barring injuries going forward. The Jaguars will visit the Texans in Week 4.
Sep 16, 2024
More involved Week 2
Johnson carried five times for 26 yards during Sunday's 18-13 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old didn't play a snap during the season opener, but he operated as Jacksonville's No. 2 tailback during Sunday's contest. Tank Bigsby filled that role Week 1 but suffered a shoulder injury against Cleveland, though he was able to return to the contest. Johnson was the only Jacksonville tailback besides starter Travis Etienne to play any offensive snaps, and it's unclear how much of a role Bigsby's injury played in the backfield hierarchy. Johnson's playing time and production against the Browns should be the expectation if he retains the No. 2 job, so there's limited fantasy appeal while Etienne remains healthy.
Sep 9, 2024
No snaps Week 1
Johnson was active but didn't play any snaps during Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old saw the field in all 17 games last season, but he was limited to bench duty in the 2024 season opener as No. 2 tailback Tank Bigsby played 32 percent of the offensive snaps. Johnson isn't likely see much playing time while Bigsby and starter Travis Etienne remain healthy.
Aug 19, 2024
Minor role in Saturday's exhibition
Johnson carried three times for 12 yards and caught his lone target for nine yards during Saturday's preseason game against the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old re-signed with Jacksonville on a one-year deal in the spring and has eight carries for 43 yards and two receptions for 32 yards through two preseason games. Starter Travis Etienne sat out Saturday's contest, and Tank Bigsby instead started the game and appears to be the favorite for the backup job. Johnson totaled 41 carries for 108 yards and 10 receptions for 140 yards last season, and he's unlikely to be more involved in 2024, if he even makes the season-opening roster.
Mar 12, 2024
Staying with Jacksonsville
Johnson is re-signing with the Jaguars on a one-year deal Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson operated as the team's No. 3 running back for the majority of the season, seeing limited opportunities behind Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby. It likely didn't help that the South Florida product averaged just 2.6 yards per carry on 41 attempts across his 17 appearances. He'll likely head into the Jaguars' offseason programs working to hold onto his third-string role in 2024.
Jan 23, 2024
Totals 248 scrimmage yards
Johnson carried once for minus-one yard versus the Titans in Week 18. He played in all 17 games and had 41 rushes for 108 yards and 10 catches for 140 yards this season.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old opened and closed the campaign as Jacksonville's No. 3 tailback, though he did have a few weeks in the middle of the season where he worked in the No. 2 role ahead of rookie Tank Bigsby. Johnson will become a free agent during the offseason and will likely look for a new home as a backup tailback in 2024.
Jan 1, 2024
Diminishing role
Johnson had three carries for zero yards and returned one kickoff for 22 yards during Sunday's 26-0 win against Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Jacksonville tailbacks received 29 carries in Sunday's blowout, with both Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby in double digits. Johnson played just 12 offensive snaps and may have dropped to No. 3 on the backfield depth chart.
Dec 25, 2023
Minimal role Week 16
Johnson rushed once for two yards during Sunday's 30-12 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Jacksonville fell behind early and rushed the ball 13 times in the blowout defeat, with just seven of those carries going to running backs. Johnson has a solid grip on the No. 2 tailback job but isn't likely to be major factor in the offense down the stretch with starter Travis Etienne healthy.
Dec 18, 2023
Two touches Week 15
Johnson carried twice for five yards and wasn't targeted during Sunday's 23-7 loss against the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old played 18 of 62 offensive snaps, but starter Travis Etienne was the only Jacksonville tailback to receive more than two touches. Johnson should continue to have a limited workload down the stretch as Etienne's top backup.
Dec 15, 2023
Good to go against Baltimore
Johnson (knee) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday night's game against the Ravens, Demetrius Harvey of The Florida Times-Union reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has been playing through the knee issue for weeks. He's settled in as Travis Etienne's change of pace and is averaging 6.4 touches per game over the Jaguars' last five contests.
Dec 13, 2023
Limited at practice
Johnson (knee) was a limited participant at the Jaguars' practice Wednesday, Mia O'Brien of 1010 XL 92.5 FM Jacksonville reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was able to play through his knee injury in Week 14 versus the Browns, so his ability to practice in any capacity Wednesday seems to suggest that he didn't suffer an setbacks. He'll look to increase his workload at one of the team's two remaining sessions ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Ravens.
Dec 11, 2023
Posts 28 yards from scrimmage
Johnson carried three times for 12 yards and caught two of three targets for 16 yards during Sunday's 31-27 loss against the Browns. He also returned two kickoffs for 34 yards.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old suited up Sunday after being questionable with a knee injury, and he filled his usual role as Travis Etienne's top backup. Johnson eclipsed 40 scrimmage yards in three straight contests after taking over the No. 2 role Week 10, but his average of 18.5 scrimmage yards over the past two games is likely a better representation of his expected production while Etienne is available.
Dec 10, 2023
Available Sunday
Johnson (knee) is active ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is nursing a knee issue that held him to limited participation in practices throughout the week, but it now seems as if he'll be able play through the pain Sunday. Expect the 27-year-old running back to handle his usual duties as Travis Etienne's (ribs) backup in Week 14.
Dec 8, 2023
Questionable for Sunday
Johnson (knee) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has been bothered by a knee issue after the Jaguars' Week 13 loss, but he was able to log a week of limited practice sessions and he's got a shot to suit up Sunday. If the 27-year-old running back is unable to play in Week 14, Jacksonville's backup running back duties would likely be assumed by Tank Bigsby.
Dec 6, 2023
Bothered by knee
Johnson was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice due to a knee injury, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Lead back Travis Etienne (ribs) also was a limited participant, two days after playing through his injury and taking 15 touches for 79 yards and a TD while playing 62 percent of snaps on offense. Johnson had six touches for 10 yards on 36 percent of snaps in the overtime loss to Cincinnati, and he's likely looking at a similar role this Sunday against the Browns, though the Jaguars may feature their RBs more than usual with WR Christian Kirk (core muscle) definitely out and QB Trevor Lawrence (ankle) quite possibly sidelined as well. A limited practice to start the week suggests Johnson is on track to play, at least.
Dec 5, 2023
Five carries Week 13
Johnson carried five times for four yards and caught his lone target for five yards during Monday's 34-31 loss to Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old once again operated as Jacksonville's No. 2 tailback and played 25 of 69 offensive snaps, though he finished below 40 scrimmage yards for the first time since Week 8. Johnson appears to have a firm grip on the backup job but is nothing more than Travis Etienne insurance for fantasy managers.
Nov 27, 2023
Eight touches in win
Johnson carried seven times for 19 yards and caught one of two targets for 42 yards during Sunday's 24-21 win at Houston. He also returned one kickoff for 20 yards.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old has taken hold of the No. 2 tailback job and played 39 percent of Jacksonville's offensive snaps Sunday, while rookie Tank Bigsby received just one carry on two snaps. Starter Travis Etienne exited the contest with a chest injury but was able to return and should be available moving forward. Johnson has 17 carries for 51 yards and four receptions for 104 yards over the past three games, and he should continue to have a modest workload as the Jags' primary backup to Etienne.
Nov 20, 2023
Totals 54 yards Week 11
Johnson carried seven times for 20 yards and caught his lone target for 34 yards during Sunday's 34-14 win against Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old played a season-high 17 offensive snaps and didn't have much success on the ground in the blowout victory, but his 34-yard catch-and-run during the third quarter tied for Jacksonville's longest play of the day. Johnson has 10 carries for 32 yards and three catches for 62 yards over the past two games, with those 13 touches eclipsing his total from the first eight contests combined. It appears he's taken over the No. 2 tailback job from rookie Tank Bigsby, though neither player has much fantasy utility while starter Travis Etienne remains healthy.
Nov 13, 2023
Fives touches in lopsided loss
Johnson carried three times for 12 yards and caught both his targets for 28 yards during Sunday's 34-3 loss to San Francisco. He also returned one kickoff for 22 yards.
ANALYSIS
Johnson tied a season high with 12 offensive snaps and more than doubled his previous season high for scrimmage yards. He could be pushing rookie Tank Bigsby for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind starter Travis Etienne, but there's likely not much to glean from Sunday's game since Jacksonville trailed by three-plus possessions for most of the second half.
Oct 2, 2023
Minimal role Week 4
Johnson had one carry for minus-two yards during Sunday's 23-7 win over the Falcons in London.
ANALYSIS
JaMycal Hasty suited up for the first time this season as Jacksonville had all four of their tailbacks active, but starter Travis Etienne still dominated the offensive snaps with an 85 percent share. Johnson has just six carries for eight yards and three catches for 15 yards through the first four weeks of the season.
Sep 27, 2023
Five touches in loss
Johnson rushed three times for six yards while catching both of his targets for six yards in Sunday's 37-17 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's three rushes and two catches were both season-highs through three weeks. Surprisingly, the veteran running back out-snapped top backup Tank Bigsby 12 to nine in the contest. Johnson was unable to produce much with his increased opportunities. Barring an injury to Travis Etienne or Bigbsy, Johnson should remain off the fantasy radar when the Jaguars host the Falcons in Week 4.
Sep 18, 2023
Two touches Week 2
Johnson rushed once for eight yards and caught his lone target for nine yards during Sunday's 17-9 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old rushed for minus-four yards on his only offensive snap in the season opener, but he received two touches on six offensive snaps Sunday. No. 2 tailback Tank Bigsby saw more of the field but didn't touch the ball, as starter Travis Etienne was the only back to be a real factor. Johnson appears locked in as Jacksonville's tertiary option in the backfield.

Minimal role in opener
Johnson carried once for minus-four yards during Sunday's 31-21 win against the Colts.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old opened the campaign as the No. 3 running back on the depth chart, and he played just a single offensive snap in his Jaguars debut. Johnson is unlikely to have much of a role in the offense while starter Travis Etienne and top backup Tank Bigsby are healthy.
Aug 19, 2023
Buried on depth chart
Johnson carried the ball six times for 36 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 25-7 preseason win over the Lions. He added two receptions for seven yards.
ANALYSIS
Johnson finished second on the team with six carries and he was effective, punching in scores from 15 and one yard away. However, he was the third back on the field even with Travis Etienne sitting out, and he didn't tally a carry until the second half. Johnson has 11 carries for 67 yards across two contests this preseason, but he appears to be fourth on the depth chart despite his effectiveness.

Gets chance in Jacksonville
Johnson agreed to terms Wednesday on a one-year contract with the Jaguars, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is coming off a quiet 2022 campaign with the Browns, but he flashed in limited opportunities back in 2021, when he handled 100 carries for 534 yards and three scores. The 27-year-old could now get a chance to complete for with the likes of JaMycal Hasty and Snoop Conner for complementary work behind No. 1 running back Travis Etienne, making him an interesting end-of-roster flier in dynasty fantasy formats.
Jan 9, 2023
Quietly heads to free agency
Johnson played 10 snaps on special teams and did not play on offense in Sunday's 28-14 loss to Pittsburgh in Week 18.
ANALYSIS
Johnson finished the year with just seven touches -- four rushes and three receptions -- and heads quietly into the offseason. It was a different tale last season, after Johnson capably filled in for injured backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, rushing 100 times for 534 yards and three touchdowns. There's very little mileage on Johnson, who turns 27 in February. The Browns are expected to go with Jerome Ford as the top backup to Chubb, and Johnson likely feels ready for a bigger role than he had in 2022. Both he and Kareem Hunt are in the final year of their deals and will entertain offers from other teams.
Dec 5, 2022
No run on offense
Johnson played 15 snaps on special teams and none on offense in Sunday's 27-14 win over Houston in Week 13.
ANALYSIS
It's not surprising to see Johnson used on special teams only, but it was interesting that Jerome Ford got his first snaps and touches on offense. If an injury to Nick Chubb or Kareem Hunt should occur in the final weeks of the regular season, it's not a given that Johnson would get first crack at replacing either back in the rotation.
Nov 21, 2022
Used on special teams only
Johnson did not play on offense during Sunday's 31-23 loss to Buffalo.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's usage as a running back has decreased significantly, as both Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt have stayed healthy. He popped for 534 yards (5.3 YPC) when given an opportunity in 2021, but those that speculated on him in 2022 have been disappointed.
Nov 14, 2022
Season-high snap count
Johnson caught his lone target for minus-2 yards and did not carry the ball in Sunday's 39-17 loss to the Dolphins in Week 10.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was on the field for a season-high 12 snaps, but there was little need for the running game once the Browns fell behind by three scores early in the third quarter.
Nov 1, 2022
Mops up win
Johnson had four carries for 17 yards in Monday's 32-13 win over Cincinnati in Week 8.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was given his first rushing attempts of the season, all on the game's final drive as Cleveland iced the blowout win. The Browns snapped a four-game losing streak and resuscitated their season with the victory, which may have the organization thinking about improvements for a playoff run. That means either Johnson or Kareem Hunt, both in the final year of their contracts, could be moved by Tuesday's 4:00 pm ET trade deadline. If either of those events happen, Johnson's fantasy outlook should improve.
Oct 27, 2022
Could gain larger role soon
Johnson's role with the Browns could change as rumors pick up about the team trading Kareem Hunt before next Tuesday's 4:00 pm trade dealine, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
The report doesn't get into specific trade partners interested in Hunt, but Cleveland is reportedly seeking a fourth-round draft pick as a starting point for discussions. Both Johnson and Hunt are on expiring contracts, making each of them a possible trade piece. Hunt's role has dwindled the last two weeks -- a total of 10 touches Weeks 6 and 7 after averaging more than 11 per game over the first five weeks. If the Browns trade Hunt, Johnson would move up to second on the depth chart. If Johnson is traded, the team trading for him presumably would have a bigger role waiting for him. Per usual, Johnson is listed as third at running back on the Browns' unofficial depth chart and as the primary kickoff returner for Monday night's game against the Bengals.
Oct 16, 2022
Gathers two catches in loss
Johnson caught two of two targets for nine yards in Sunday's 38-15 loss to the Patriots in Week 6.
ANALYSIS
Johnson had his most significant contributions, but he remains a fringe player on offense. As long as Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt are healthy, Johnson will play a limited role.
Oct 12, 2022
Limited to special teams
Johnson played 15 snaps on special teams in Week 5's 30-28 loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
The Browns have kept Johnson under wrap the first five games of the season, making him inactive the first three weeks followed by mostly special-teams work (one offensive snap) in Weeks 4 and 5. And that work on special teams is not as a returner, despite Jerome Ford (ankle) being added to injured reserve. Cleveland's backfile duo of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt have been dominant on offense, so Johnson has no clear path at this time. Either an injury to one of the top backs or a trade is Johnson's best hope.
Oct 4, 2022
Gets one offensive snap
Johnson played one snap on offense and 17 snaps on special teams in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Falcons in Week 4.
ANALYSIS
Johnson, who was inactive the first two weeks, saw his first action on offense in Week 4. With Jerome Ford (ankle) hitting injured reserve, there's a chance for Johnson to handle the kickoff return duties that had been Ford's since Week 2.
Sep 23, 2022
No offensive snaps
Johnson played 15 special-teams snaps and did not line up on offense in Thursday's 29-17 win over the Steelers in Week 3.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was active for the first time this season, as Demetric Felton was given the night off. He has experience as a returner, but the Browns did not have him return punts or kicks, choosing to use Chester Rogers on punts and Jerome Ford or David Bell on kickoffs. It's possible the Browns don't want to expose Johnson to injury as a returner, so that he could be used as a trade chip later in the season.
Sep 22, 2022
Suiting up Thursday
Johnson is listed as active Thursday against the Steelers, Jake Trotter of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
For the first time this season, Johnson won't be a healthy scratch and instead will be available to the Browns offense. Still, reps will be tough to come by behind Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. In the seven games in which all three running backs were available last season, Johnson managed just seven touches for 38 yards from scrimmage on 28 offensive snaps.
Sep 19, 2022
Inactive again
Johnson was inactive Week 2 against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Johnson opens the season with two inactive designations in the first two games. Both Demetric Felton and Jerome Ford have been active ahead of Johnson, as both have roles in the return games. With Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt healthy, having Johnson active may be seen as a luxury, but it should be noted that Johnson has return experience and could replace either Felton or Ford.
Sep 11, 2022
Inactive against Carolina
Johnson (coach's decision) is inactive Week 1 against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
With Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt both healthy and set to lead the backfield in the opening week, it appears the Browns won't require the services of Johnson, who racked up 534 yards and three touchdowns on the ground a season ago. Cleveland will keep fifth-round pick Jerome Ford active as the third running back, who appears poised to do more work on special teams, such as return kicks.
Sep 8, 2022
Backing up on kick returns
Johnson will back up Demetric Felton as the kickoff returner, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson returned six kicks for 139 yards in 2021, third on the team behind Anthony Schwartz and Felton. He proved to an effective back when given a chance last season, but the Browns open with the healthy tandem of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.
Aug 28, 2022
Logs 32 snaps
Johnson had seven carries for 29 yards in Saturday's preseason finale against Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played in all three preseason games and logged his most time Saturday, getting on the field for 32 snaps. As was the case in the first two games, neither Nick Chubb nor Kareem Hunt played, as the Browns got a look at backs further down the depth chart. With quarterback Deshaun Watson set to miss the first 11 games of the season, Cleveland is expected to rely on its depth at running back. There had been speculation about trading Johnson or Hunt for a wide receiver to bolster a lack of proven options behind Amari Cooper, but the need for health and depth at running back might outweigh the luxury of an additional pass catcher.
Jun 4, 2022
Agrees to one-year deal
Johnson and the Browns have reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth $2.43 million, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was originally tendered by the Browns, which gave them the ability to match any other offer he received. Without any substantial offers, the running back has ultimately opted to take the deal with Cleveland. With Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt the primary two backs in the offense, Johnson projects to again be the next-man-up should either go down with an injury. He averaged 5.34 yards per attempt on 100 carries for the team in 2021 while finding the end zone three times.
Mar 11, 2022
To be tendered by Browns
Cleveland intends to tender Johnson at the right of first refusal number, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Browns will have the ability to match any offer Johnson receives from another team, setting him up for a one-year contract around $2.43 million unless more offers enter the mix. Johnson showed out well last season, recording three contests with over 100 scrimmage yards, and Cleveland appears to be prioritizing keeping the backfield intact. Considering that Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt (ankle) combined to miss 12 games due to injury last year, Johnson's depth role could prove a vital one.
Jan 9, 2022
Eclipses century mark in win
Johnson rushed 25 times for 123 yards and a touchdown and brought in his only target for 10 yards in the Browns' 21-16 win over the Bengals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
With nothing to play for in terms of the postseason and backup Case Keenum helming the offense, head coach Kevin Stefanski opted to give some other reserves a chance to showcase their skills and Johnson cashed in nicely on the opportunity. The talented back had already amply demonstrated his ability to serve as a legitimate lead back when called upon earlier this season, so his strong showing against a short-handed Bengals defense looking ahead to the playoffs wasn't completely surprising. Johnson finishes the season with 534 rushing yards and another 137 through the air, but with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt in front of him, his path to meaningful playing time could well continue to hinge on injuries in front of him in 2022.
Jan 9, 2022
Available for Week 18
Johnson is active for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, and with Kareem Hunt (ankle) inactive, the stage is set for Johnson to be available to work behind Nick Chubb in the Browns' Week 18 backfield, with Demetric Felton on hand in reserve.
Jan 8, 2022
Set to play
Johnson was activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday.
ANALYSIS
It'll be interesting to see how critical a role Johnson will play in the team's finale Sunday given Nick Chubb carries no injury designation after being limited in practice all week due to separate ribs and chest injuries. Typical backup, Kareem Hunt, meanwhile is listed as questionable with an ankle injury that has sidelined him since Week 14. Expect more clarification on the backfield usage prior to the team's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
Jan 4, 2022
Tests positive for virus
Cleveland placed Johnson on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday after he tested positive for the virus, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Jake Trotter of ESPN.com, Johnson is vaccinated, so he'll be eligible to come off the list as soon as he's deemed asymptomatic or is able to turn in consecutive negative test results at least 24 hours apart. He should have a shot at being reinstated to the roster prior to Sunday's game against the Bengals, though he'll almost certainly miss practice time while following the NFL's COVID-19 return-to-play protocol. Even if he gets cleared to suit up in the season finale, Johnson could be in store for a small role out of the backfield if both Nick Chubb (ribs) and Kareem Hunt (ankle) are able to play through their respective injuries.
Jan 4, 2022
More snaps than Chubb
Johnson carried five times for 13 yards and caught one of three targets for one yard in Monday's 26-14 loss to the Steelers. He also returned five kickoffs for 113 yards.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was on the field for 39 snaps, nine more than starter Nick Chubb, who was apparently banged up earlier in the contest according to head coach Kevin Stefanski, per a report from Zac Jackson of The Athletic. Chubb managed to stay in the game, but Stefanski shied away from the running attack, and quarterback Baker Mayfield paid for it in the form of nine sacks and 11 quarterback hits. If Chubb is unavailable next week or the Browns choose to rest him, Johnson will be in line for a larger load Week 18 against the Bengals.
Dec 27, 2021
Given five touches in loss
Johnson had four carries for 58 yards and caught one of two targets for eight yards in Week 16's 24-22 loss to the Packers on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's day included a huge 3rd-and-10 conversion, rushing 30 yards to the Green Bay five-yard line and setting up the Browns' final score. He served as Nick Chubb's backup for the third consecutive game with Kareem Hunt sidelined by an ankle injury while also on the reserve/COVID-19 list. It was the third straight game with five touches for Johnson, who has emerged as a competent backup with starter potential in his third NFL season. He'll never usurp the primary role from Chubb, but Johnson is averaging 5.5 yards per carry during his career and hasn't taken the number of hits that other running backs have absorbed over 47 career games.
Dec 20, 2021
Five touches behind Chubb
Johnson rushed once for minus-2 yards and caught all four of his targets for 17 yards in Monday's 16-14 loss to the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was a non-factor on the ground behind workhorse Nick Chubb, who mustered 91 yards and a touchdown on 23 rushing attempts. He played a scaled-down version of the third-down back role normally occupied by the inactive Kareem Hunt, who's currently on the reserve/COVID-19 list while also dealing with an ankle injury, and Johnson actually tied Donovan Peoples-Jones for the team lead in catches. Given his role in this one, Johnson will be tough to trust in Week 16 against the Packers, even if Hunt's not ready to return.
Dec 17, 2021
Browns-Raiders moved to Monday
Johnson and the Browns will no longer play the Raiders on Saturday, after the NFL officially rescheduled the matchup between the two teams for Monday at 5 p.m. ET.
ANALYSIS
Due to ongoing COVID-19-related concerns within the Cleveland organization, the NFL is hopeful that by delaying the game two days, the Browns will restore enough players from the reserve/COVID-19 list to alleviate depth concerns on the roster. Since Kareem Hunt isn't in line to play Week 15 after failing to practice this week due to an ankle injury before being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, Johnson has a clear path to the No. 2 role out of the backfield behind starter Nick Chubb.
Dec 16, 2021
No. 2 backfield role awaits
Johnson is expected to serve as the top backup to starting running back Nick Chubb with Kareem Hunt (ankle) ruled out for Saturday's game against the Raiders, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson had moved down to the third spot on the depth chart for the Browns' past two games following Hunt's return from injured reserve, but the former should have a clear path to the No. 2 role after the latter picked up another injury in Cleveland's Week 14 win over Baltimore. Chubb is still likely to see the majority of the snaps and touches out of the backfield, but Johnson and Hunt still managed to earn six carries and three receptions between them last week. A touch count in the high single digits or low double digits could be enough to keep Johnson on the radar in deeper PPR leagues this week.
Dec 13, 2021
Fills in for injured Hill
Johnson had four carries for 22 yards and caught his lone target for seven yards in Sunday's 24-22 win over the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Johnson did not play on offense when the Browns and Ravens hooked up in Week 12 due to the availability of both Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt; however, Hunt sustained an ankle injury Sunday and was limited to 13 snaps. More will be known about Hunt's status heading into Week 15's road game against Las Vegas after the back undergoes testing Monday. If Hunt's unable to go, Johnson will slot in as the backup to Chubb.
Nov 29, 2021
No touches in loss
Johnson played six offensive snaps and did not receive a touch or a target in Sunday's 16-10 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
This was the first game in five weeks in which the Browns had both Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt (leg) available, which put a limit on Johnson's playing time. Hunt injured his leg late and was removed from the game, which could impact Johnson's role going forward; however, Cleveland is on its bye Week 13. The next game is Week 14, a return matchup at home against the Ravens.
Nov 21, 2021
Limited to five carries
Johnson recorded five carries for 26 yards in Sunday's 13-10 win over Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Despite topping 150 total yards in Week 10, Johnson took a back seat in the gameplan due to the return of Nick Chubb (illness). Johnson has now seen single-digit touches in every game that Chubb has been active. Johnson's role is likely to only diminish further once Kareem Hunt (calf) is able to return from injured reserve.
Nov 19, 2021
Likely to take back seat to Chubb
Johnson is expected to move into the No. 2 role out of the Cleveland backfield Sunday against the Lions after Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Nick Chubb (illness) is good to go after practicing Friday in his return from the reserve/COVID-19 list, Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After Chubb was placed on the list Nov. 9 following a positive test of the virus, Johnson stepped in to pick up his second start of the season Week 10 against New England. Though the Browns weren't competitive in a 45-7 loss, Johnson was productive with his opportunities, carrying 19 times for 99 yards and catching seven passes for 58 yards on eight targets. While Johnson has been a revelation in both of his starts, a healthy Chubb remains the Browns' unquestioned lead back, though Cleveland could be inclined to ease him back from a one-game absence with a slightly lighter workload than normal against an inferior Lions team. If that's the case, Johnson could still have some value this week as a low-end flex play in deeper leagues while Kareem Hunt (calf) remains on injured reserve.
Nov 14, 2021
Plays well in spot start
Johnson ran for 99 yards on 19 carries while catching seven passes for 58 yards on eight targets against New England on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The Browns weren't very threatening in the 45-7 loss and the point gap might have led New England to play less aggressively on defense, but this is still an impressive showing for the formerly undrafted Johnson, who has thrived in both of his spot starts this year. Johnson is expected to head back to the bench against the Lions in Week 11, but by now he's given convincing reason to believe he'll play well whenever he might get the opportunity next.
Nov 12, 2021
In line for leading role Sunday
Johnson is expected to be the Browns' No. 1 running back Sunday at New England with Nick Chubb (illness), Demetric Felton (illness) and John Kelly (illness) all on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kevin Stefanski noted the trio of Chubb, Felton and Kelly will be unable to clear COVID-19 protocols in time to be available for Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, leaving Johnson as the sole healthy running back on the active roster. On top of that, Kareem Hunt (calf) isn't ready to return from injured reserve, so Johnson likely only will have to contend with elevated options out of the backfield such as Brian Hill and Dexter Williams. When Johnson served as Cleveland's lead runner Week 7, he churned out 168 yards from scrimmage and one TD on 24 touches.
Nov 10, 2021
Could get another start
Johnson will make another start in the event teammate Nick Chubb (illness) isn't reinstated from the reserve/COVID-19 list before Sunday's game in New England, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's previous start, Week 7 against Denver, yielded 22 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown and two catches for 22 yards on 69 percent snap share, while backups Demetric Felton and John Kelly combined for just four carries and three targets. A full repeat is a lot to ask in New England, but it is a safe guess that Johnson will have a busy afternoon if Chubb doesn't end up playing. In order to suit up, Chubb needs to return negative tests on back-to-back days, after initially testing positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday morning.
Nov 7, 2021
Touchdown streak snapped
Johnson had eight carries for 16 yards in Sunday's 41-16 win over the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Nick Chubb had the bulk of the carries early, before Johnson took over as Cleveland's blowout took place. It was the first time in three weeks that Johnson did not score a touchdown. He continues to fill the backup role while Kareem Hunt (calf) is sidelined on injured reserve. Hunt's three-week minimum stay on IR ended Sunday, but the Browns feel he'll need at least one more week before he's ready to play.
Oct 31, 2021
Finds end zone against Pittsburgh
Johnson carried the ball four times for 22 yards and a touchdown and caught one of three targets for seven yards in Sunday's 15-10 loss to the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
While Nick Chubb dominated the backfield touches in his return to action, Johnson was the only Brown to get into the end zone on a 10-yard dash in the third quarter. Kareem Hunt (calf) isn't expected to be back any time soon, so Johnson should continue to have a role for Cleveland in Week 9 against the Bengals.
Oct 26, 2021
Faces competition in backfield
With Nick Chubb (calf) returning to practice Monday, as reported by Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal, Johnson may not be the lead back Week 8 against the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski was hopeful last week that Chubb could return for the Pittsburgh game, and the coach sounded more confident Monday. "He's gotten a lot of work done this last couple weeks. He's feeling good. He's continuing to get rehab, and I think he's excited to get back out there. We'll see how it goes over the next couple days and see if he can," Stefanski said. To be clear, Ulrich reports Chubb's return to practice but did not speculate on the impact of a potential return would have on Johnson. Logically, if Chubb is ready to play, then Johnson's role will be diminished.
Oct 21, 2021
Shines in Week 7 spot start
Johnson rushed 22 times for 146 yards and a touchdown and brought in both targets for 22 yards in the Browns' 17-14 win over the Broncos on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Johnson stole the show in his start in place of Nick Chubb (hamstring) and Kareem Hunt (IR-hamstring), repeatedly gashing the tough Broncos front seven for sizable gains on the ground. The third-year pro, who'd flashed occasionally during his time with the Orlando Apollos of the AAF back in the spring of 2019 but had seen very modest opportunities since joining the Browns later that same year, averaged a robust 6.6 yards per carry and notched his first career NFL touchdown on a four-yard run to cap off a five-play, 75-yard opening drive. Johnson could still see a solid workload as Chubb's main backup if the latter is ready to suit up for a Week 8 home AFC North showdown against the Steelers a week from Sunday.
Oct 19, 2021
In line to start Thursday
Johnson is slated for his first career start Thursday versus the Broncos after Nick Chubb (calf) was ruled out and Kareem Hunt (calf) went on IR, Jake Trotter of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Since joining the Browns in May 2019 after a stint with Orlando in the AAF, Johnson has been active for all 40 of the team's games, including postseason. Overall, his 40 rushes have gone off at a clip just shy of 5.0 YPC, and he's also hauled in 10 of 12 targets for 92 yards. Cleveland has a decision to make with Baker Mayfield and his left throwing shoulder for Week 7, but even if he plays the team could opt to be more more ground-based to keep pressure off the fourth-year quarterback. In any case, Johnson seems poised to be the Browns' runner on early downs, Demetric Felton likely will be the change-of-pace option, and John Kelly sits at third on the RB depth chart as long as Chubb and Hunt are sidelined.
Oct 17, 2021
Two touches Sunday
Johnson carried the ball once for two yards and caught his only target for seven yards in Sunday's 37-14 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Despite the fact Nick Chubb (calf) was inactive, Johnson didn't see much of a role behind Kareem Hunt in the Cleveland backfield. However, Hunt also left Sunday's game with a calf issue after coming into the contest already dealing with wrist and knee injuries, and if neither of the Browns' two elite RBs are able to suit up for a Week 7 clash with the Broncos, Johnson could find himself with a significant role, perhaps as the early-down option with rookie Demetric Felton handling passing downs.
Oct 16, 2021
In line for increased snaps
Johnson will serve as the second running back on the depth chart in Sunday's game against Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Nick Chubb (calf) has been ruled out of the game, which creates an opportunity for Johnson, who has played just eight snaps on offense in 2021. Kareem Hunt is slated to take the lead back role, but he was hampered by knee and wrist injuries during practice. Should those injuries hinder Hunt or get aggravated during the game, Johnson and Demetric Felton are poised to step in. Sunday's kickoff is at 4:05 PM ET.
Oct 4, 2021
Use on special teams only
Johnson did not have an offensive snap and was on the field 19 snaps on special teams during Sundays' 14-7 win over Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
This was second time in four games with no offensive snaps for Johnson, who has a total of eight snaps and two carries through four games. He'd likely be first in line for duty should anything untoward happen to Nick Chubb or Kareem Hunt. Rookie Demetric Felton has more offensive snaps than Johnson, but the veteran has more time in the system while Felton is viewed more as a specialty tool.
Sep 27, 2021
Gets first carries
Johnson had two carries for nine yards in Sunday's 26-6 win over Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was part of the grouping that came in on for the final series of the game. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt helped seal the game, as Cleveland posted 13 fourth-quarter points and rested its regulars while Johnson made his first carries of the season.
Sep 13, 2021
Stays on bench in opener
Johnson did not play in Sunday's 33-29 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
It's not surprising Johnson didn't get a snap on offense, as he sits behind Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, but he was exepcted to have a special teams role. He has return experience but watched rookie Demetric Felton handle the return duties Week 1.
Aug 22, 2021
Gets first reps
Johnson rushed four times for 36 yards and caught four of five targets for 23 yards in Sunday's 17-13 preseason win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was Cleveland's first tailback to feature Sunday, and he did well with his workload. Along with totaling nearly 60 yards, Johnson also recovered a fumble by quarterback Kyle Lauletta. Although John Kelly impressed with nine carries for 58 yards and a touchdown after Johnson exited, the USF product at least helped himself heading into what could be a crucial preseason finale next Sunday in his quest to earn a roster spot behind Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.
Aug 15, 2021
Starts preseason opener
Johnson had five carries for 14 yards and caught two of three targets for 28 yards in Saturday's 23-13 win over Jacksonville in preseason Week 1.
ANALYSIS
Neither Nick Chubb nor Kareem Hunt played the exhibition opener, so Johnson got the start for the Browns, which is understandable as the team's third back on the depth chart. Notably, Johnson didn't return kicks or punts, but that could be attributed to Johnson having to play a heavy load (for preseason) on offense.
Aug 3, 2021
Back with team
Johnson (personal) is back with the team at training camp, Anthony Poisal of the Browns' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has been getting most of work in camp as a returner. He's joined by Donovan Peoples-Jones, JoJo Natson, Ryan Switzer and Demetric Felton as potential returners.
Jul 28, 2021
Away from team
Johnson is not with the Browns as training camp opened Wednesday because he's attending the birth of his first child, Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski said Johnson should return to the team by the end of the week.
Jan 18, 2021
Plays familiar role in playoff loss
Johnson did not play on offense and returned two kickoffs for 37 yards in Sunday's 22-17 playoff loss to Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was a distant third on the depth chart behind Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt all season while appearing in all 16 regular season games and both playoff contests. He had 33 carries for 166 yards while playing 81 snaps. Both Chubb and Hunt are under contract for 2021, and no change is expected for the running back depth chart. Johnson will be the primary kick and punt returner entering 2021 training camp, but teams typically bring in other candidates to challenge for return jobs.
Dec 28, 2020
Returns all kicks
Johnson returned three kickoffs for 79 yards and two punts for 13 yards in Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's normally Cleveland's kick returner, but he added a second duty Sunday with Donovan Peoples-Jones added to the COVID-19 list for the game.

Ready for Week 16
Johnson (groin) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Jets, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old was limited by the groin injury at the start of the week, but he put in a full practice Friday to avoid the questionable tag. Johnson should handle kick return duties and work as Cleveland's No. 3 running back behind Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt on Sunday.

Dealing with groin injury
Johnson (groin) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson ran out last Sunday's win over the Giants to provide Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt with some rest, logging four carries for 24 yards, but he appears to have gotten nicked up in the process. He'll have two more chances to upgrade his activity ahead of Week 16's road game against the Jets.

Finishes game
Johnson has four carries for 24 yards and returned one kickoff for 16 yards in Sunday's 20-6 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Johnson had his first carries since Week 8, finishing the game on the Browns' final drive. Since Nick Chubb returned from an injury following a Week 9 bye, Johnson's been relegated to kick return duty.

Makes special teams impact
Johnson averaged 31 yards on three kickoff returns in Sunday's 27-25 win over Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
Johnson, who played three snaps as a running back, has fallen off the offensive radar since Nick Chubb returned from a knee injury, but he's resurfaced as the Browns' primary kick returner. He had 43-yard and 32-yard returns that put the Browns in position to respond to Jacksonville scores with their own points. As long as Chubb and Kareem Hunt stay healthy, Johnson will have to make contributions on special teams.

Little use on offense
Johnson played one snap on offense and five special-team snaps in Sunday's 22-17 win over the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
While the Browns have become a run-dominant team, all the attention goes to Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Johnson's played one offensive snap since Chubb's return to the active roster Week 10. Johnson did lead the team in kickoff returns, getting two chances (40 yards) while rookie Donovan Peoples-Jones had one (30 yards).

No carries with Nick Chubb's return
Johnson garnered zero offensive snaps and five special-teams snaps during Sunday's 10-7 win against the Texans.
ANALYSIS
With Nick Chubb returning from a knee injury that had held him out since Oct. 4, Johnson was relegated to a special-teams role. Johnson's involvement in the offense had been fading in recent appearances, as he only accumulated 51 scrimmage yards on 15 combined offensive touches Weeks 5 through 10, after racking up 95 yards on 13 carries the game Chubb went down against the Cowboys in Week 4. Heading into a matchup against the Eagles, Johnson sits a distant third on Cleveland's RB depth chart behind Chubb and Kareem Hunt.

Three touches in loss
Johnson carried twice for six yards and caught is lone target for five yards in Sunday's 16-6 loss to the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's had a total of 17 touches in the four games since a breakout performance in the Week 4 win over Dallas. With a bye week looming and Nick Chubb (knee) eligible to return from injured reserve Week 10, the loss to Las Vegas may have been the window shutting on Johnson's offensive relevance.
Oct 26, 2020
One carry in win
Johnson had one carry for three yards and was not targeted in Sunday's 37-34 win over the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Since his 95-yard outburst in a Week 4 win over the Cowboys, Johnson's had fewer touches in each successive week. He's gone from 13 touches to nine to four and now one. His window of opportunity is closing soon. The Browns are at home Week 8 against Las Vegas before a bye week. After that, Nick Chubb (knee) is expected to return, which will relegate Johnson to third on the depth chart.
Oct 19, 2020
No room, role in Week 6 loss
Johnson carried four times for one yard and was targeted once in Sunday's 38-7 loss to Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Johnson and the rest of the running backs had few holes to hit and were of little need in Sunday's blowout. With Nick Chubb (knee) sidelined and Kareem Hunt (3.4 YPC) bottled up, there's opportunity for Johnson or Dontrell Hilliard to claim a larger role.
Oct 12, 2020
Modest production in win
Johnson had eight carries for 32 yards and caught his lone target for four yards in Sunday's 32-23 win over the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Johnson moved up to second on the depth chart behind Kareem Hunt, as the Browns cope with the loss to Nick Chubb. Coming off a 95-yard effort in Week 4, Johnson had cache heading into Week 5, particularly with Hunt limited at practices leading up to the game. Indianapolis' stout defense against the run -- they entered allowing 77.0 yards per game, fourth in the NFL -- bottled up Cleveland's ground game, forcing more from the passing game than the ground attack.

Looking at prime opportunity
Johnson could handle a significant role on offense with Nick Chubb (knee) on IR and expected to miss about six weeks, Jake Trotter of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson worked alongside Kareem Hunt after Chubb was forced out of Cleveland's Week 4 win over the Cowboys, and he impressed while turning 13 carries into 95 yards. Though Kareem Hunt (groin) is the clear favorite to lead the Browns' backfield until late November, at which point Chubb could return, it wouldn't be out of the question for Johnson to see somewhere in the range of ten carries a week in one of the league's most potent rushing attacks. Additionally, Johnson would stand to inherit a hugely valuable role if Hunt were to exacerbate his groin injury.
Oct 4, 2020
Runs for 95 yards
Johnson carried 13 times for 95 yards during Sunday's 49-38 win over the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Johnson got involved in the offense after Nick Chubb (knee) left with an injury and gashed the Dallas defense for 7.3 yards per carry. His long gain went for 28 yards and he impressively finished with more carries than Kareem Hunt, who found the end zone twice on the day. Chubb was able to walk off under his own power, but the extent of his injury remains to be seen. If he is forced to sit out next Sunday's matchup with the Colts, Johnson could receive a healthy workload as a complementary option to Hunt.

Fills in as returner
Johnson entered Sunday's game as the primary returner after JoJo Natson left in the second quarter due to a knee injury.
ANALYSIS
Johnson gained zero yards on one punt return in the third quarter. He's played just three percent of the offensive snaps in 2020, so any contributions Johnson can make are likely on special teams.

Wins roster spot
Johnson made the Browns' 53-man roster, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson slots in at third on the depth chart behind Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. He beat out Dontrell Hilliard, who could return as a member of the practice squad. Johnson's role as a returner is likely the deciding factor. He had four carries and seven targets in 16 games last season.
