Signs with Denver's practice squad
The Broncos signed Vaughn to the practice squad Tuesday, Matt Zenitz of CBSSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn was unable to make the Cowboys' 53-man roster at the end of training camp. The 2023 sixth-rounder will get another opportunity with the Broncos as a member of the scout team, and he would be a top candidate to be elevated to Denver's active roster if the team is in need of backfield depth. Vaughn appeared in seven regular-season games for the Cowboys in 2024 and logged 17 carries for 70 yards and three catches (on five targets) for 18 yards.

Cut by Cowboys
Dallas waived Vaughn on Tuesday, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn, a 2023 fifth-round pick, could be a candidate for the Cowboys' practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers. The presence of veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders (shoulder) atop the backfield depth chart, plus rookie Jaydon Blue (ankle), had always made it unlikely Vaughn would secure a spot on the initial 53-man roster.

Leads team in rushing Friday
Vaughn carried the ball 10 times for 42 yards and added 22 yards on one kickoff return in Friday's 31-13 preseason win over the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
The 2023 sixth-round pick got the start for Dallas and gained most of his yardage on the team's opening drive, as he helped set up a one-yard TD run for Joe Milton. Miles Sanders (shoulder) was held out of the contest and Jaydon Blue left the game in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury, so Vaughn's solid performance may prove to be timely as he tries to win a spot in the backfield behind presumed Week 1 starter Javonte Williams.
Aug 17, 2025
Follows Sanders in preseason loss
Vaughn rushed the ball five times for 11 yards in Saturday's 31-13 preseason loss to the Ravens. He added one reception on one target for seven yards.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn had risen up the depth chart in Dallas with Jaydon Blue (heel) and Miles Sanders both sidelined. However, Sanders returned to practice this week and started Saturday's contest ahead of Vaughn. Depending on the severity of Blue's injury, Vaughn could enter the regular season third on the depth chart, but regular touches in the offense don't appear likely barring additional injuries.
Aug 13, 2025
Getting first-team reps
Vaughn worked with the first-team offense during practice Tuesday, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The undersized back showed his usual elusiveness, but Vaughn heads into his third NFL season having yet to make much of an impact with his rare touches in game action. He's getting opportunities with the first team while rookie Jaydon Blue (heel) is sidelined, but Vaughn faces an uphill battle to even have a spot on the gameday roster with Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders also ahead of him on the depth chart, and 2025 seventh-round pick Phil Mafah looking good in camp as well.

Resumes practicing Thursday
Vaughn (hamstring) returned to practice Thursday, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn's return to practice should pave the way for him to suit up in Saturday's preseason opener against the Rams. He's vying for a depth role in a Dallas backfield that also includes Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders (knee), Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. Vaughn is the only member of that group that was with the Cowboys last season.
Jul 27, 2025
Expected to return soon
Vaughn (hamstring) is expected to return to practice this week, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn has been sidelined at practice with a hamstring injury, but he may be nearing a return to action. The running back is expected to operate as a depth option behind Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders this season, likely making his greatest impact on special teams.
Jan 6, 2025
Season-high six carries in Week 18
Vaughn carried the ball six times for 37 yards in Sunday's 23-19 loss to the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
In a meaningless game for the Cowboys. Vaughn saw a season-high workload and delivered a career high in rushing yards. The 2023 sixth-round pick appeared in only seven games this season and managed just 88 scrimmage yards on 20 touches, once again serving as a depth option in the backfield. Rico Dowdle will be a free agent this offseason and may have priced himself out of Dallas' plans with a strong campaign, but it's highly unlikely Vaughn will head into 2025 at the top of the depth chart.
Dec 29, 2024
Healthy scratch Sunday
Vaughn (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
The 2023 sixth-round pick finds himself as the third man on the depth chart behind Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott. Vaughn has not played in a game since Week 11 against Houston. He has 11 carries for 33 yards and no touchdowns this season.
Nov 24, 2024
Not playing Week 12
Vaughn (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's clash against the Commanders, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn will be a healthy scratch for the second time in the past three weeks, leaving Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott to handle the work in Dallas' backfield along with fullback Hunter Luepke. Vaughn has been inefficient as a ball carrier in his limited opportunities this season, gaining just 33 yards on 11 carries while adding 18 yards on three receptions.
Nov 20, 2024
Minimal production against Houston
Vaughn rushed four times for 13 yards and caught one of his two targets for four yards in Monday's 34-10 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn played just 16 of the Cowboys' 83 offensive snaps in the contest, the fewest of any Dallas running back behind both Rico Dowdle (41) and Ezekiel Elliott (26). The 23-year-old Kansas State product has not been involved in the offense much in 2024, recording just 11 rushing attempts for 33 yards and three catches for 18 yards. Buried on the depth chart behind Dowdle and Elliott on an offense that is struggling to run the ball effectively, Vaughn should not be in consideration for fantasy purposes as the Cowboys head into a Week 12 matchup with the Commanders.
Nov 10, 2024
Inactive for Week 10
Vaughn (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn played three snaps on special teams in Week 9 against the Falcons. With Vaughn a healthy scratch Sunday, Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott will be the Cowboys' two options out of the backfield.
Oct 6, 2024
Won't play Week 5
Vaughn (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn has seen minimal work over the first four games of the regular season. He will be a healthy inactive Sunday as the Cowboys go with Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott as their only two active running backs.
Sep 28, 2024
Shut out of game plan Thursday
Vaughn didn't see a touch and got only three snaps on offense in Thursday's win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The 2023 sixth-round pick continues to be a distant third in the Dallas backfield hierarchy behind Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott, and Vaughn failed to touch the ball in Week 4 for the first time all season. With Dalvin Cook stashed on the practice squad and the Cowboys getting little production from their running game, Vaughn's hold on a 53-man roster spot appears tenuous at best.
Sep 23, 2024
Minimal workload Sunday
Vaughn carried the ball twice for five yards and caught one of two targets for eight yards in Sunday's loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Rico Dowdle (3.8 yards per carry on the season) and Ezekiel Elliott (3.3 yards per carry) continue to be very unimpressive as the Cowboys' two lead running backs, but that hasn't resulted in Vaughn getting much of a chance to prove himself. The 2023 sixth-round pick is only averaging 2.9 yards per carry himself on seven totes through three games, so he hasn't made a strong case for a bigger role heading into a Week 4 clash with the Giants.
Sep 17, 2024
Fives touches Sunday
Vaughn carried the ball four times for 11 yards and caught his only target for six yards in Sunday's loss to the Saints.
ANALYSIS
The second-year player continues to mix into the backfield behind Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott, but Vaughn has yet to find much running room, as his six-yard reception Sunday is his longest gain of the year so far. Should Dallas decide to elevate Dalvin Cook from the practice squad at some point, it could be Vaughn who loses his spot on the game-day roster.
Aug 24, 2024
Looks good against Bolts
Vaughn carried the ball nine times for 53 yards and failed to catch two targets in Saturday's 26-19 preseason loss to the Chargers. He added 23 yards on one kickoff return.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn mixed into the backfield on the Cowboys' first drive of the day, and the Kansas State product showed off his ability to produce chunk plays with an 18-yard scamper in the second quarter that set up Dallas' first touchdown of the day. Vaughn is fighting for a spot on the season-opening roster behind Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle in the backfield, and the fact that he got carries before Royce Freeman and out-produced the veteran can be taken as a positive sign for his chances.
Aug 19, 2024
Strong showing Saturday
Vaughn carried the ball five times for 34 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Raiders. He also returned one kickoff for 25 yards.
ANALYSIS
The undersized back looked good in his first exhibition action after missing the Cowboys' preseason opener due to a hamstring injury. Vaughn led all Dallas backs in rushing yards and showed some surprising power through contact in addition to his usual elusiveness. The 2023 sixth-round pick is fighting for a depth spot behind Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle in the backfield, and his ability to contribute on special teams could help him secure a spot on the gameday roster.
Aug 14, 2024
Back at practice
Vaughn (hamstring) returned to practice Wednesday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Archer, Vaughn, who last practiced July 31, worked with all three of the Cowboys' offensive units in his return to practice, and in the process had a couple of of good runs. Now that the 2023 sixth-rounder is back in the mix, he'll look to carve out a change-of-pace role in a Dallas backfield that also includes Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle, Royce Freeman and Malik Davis.
Aug 2, 2024
Sidelined by hamstring injury
Vaughn missed the past couple practices with a hamstring injury, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn's absence during the second week of training camp may impact his chances of earning a spot on the 53-man roster. Early reports suggest Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle and Royce Freeman are all ahead of Vaughn, a 2023 sixth-round pick who barely played as a rookie.

Could take slot snaps?
Vaughn (ankle) is a candidate to earn more work out of the slot this offseason, Reid Hanson of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn only suited up for seven games as a rookie before landing on IR, across which he totaled just 80 yards from scrimmage without a touchdown. Now presumably healthy, the 5-foot-6 running back could have a clearer path to backfield opportunities with Tony Pollard having moved on to Tennessee, even with Ezekiel Elliott now back atop the depth chart. The slot could be a more natural fit for Vaughn, though to actually emerge as a fantasy contributor Year 2, he'll need to earn more than the occasional designed play.
Jan 3, 2024
Placed on IR with ankle injury
Vaughn was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, and Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports that the running back has an ankle injury.
ANALYSIS
After a promising preseason, Vaughn failed to carve out a prominent role in the regular season. The 5-foot-6 running back out of Kansas State was frequently left inactive on game days and finishes his rookie campaign with 23 carries for 40 yards, as well as seven catches on as many targets for 40 yards.
Jan 1, 2024
Three touches against Detroit
Vaughn carried the ball twice for two yards and caught his only target for 10 yards in a Week 17 win over the Lions.
ANALYSIS
With Rico Dowdle (ankle) unavailable, Vaughn stepped in as the backup to Tony Pollard and saw a modest workload in a 20-19 victory. It was still the rookie's highest tough volume since Week 5, as the diminutive speedster has been inactive for all but two games since then. The Cowboys will be looking to lock up the NFC East title in Week 18, so Vaughn figures to see minimal involvement again even if Dowdle sits out a second straight game.
Dec 24, 2023
Won't play Week 16
Vaughn (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Dolphins, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn has now been a healthy scratch for six consecutive weeks, with his last appearance coming in Week 10 against the Giants. He 68 scrimmage yards on 27 touches this season.
Dec 10, 2023
Won't play Sunday
Vaughn (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn will sit out for the fourth straight game. His last appearance was in Week 10 against the Giants when he rushed for minus-two yards on his only carry while adding an 11-yard reception. Rico Dowdle will provide backfield depth behind Tony Pollard for Sunday's NFC East clash.
Nov 30, 2023
Inactive Thursday
Vaughn (coach's decision) is out for Thursday night's game against the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn is third on the Dallas running back depth chart behind Tony Pollard and Rico Dowdle. The rookie has 21 carries for 38 yards and six catches for 30 yards on 52 offensive snaps this season.
Nov 23, 2023
Won't play Sunday
Vaughn (coach's decision) is inactive Thursday against the Commanders, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn will take a seat again in Week 12, as Rico Dowdle (ankle) will play against Washington. The former's next chance to play will be Week 13 against the Seahawks.
Nov 19, 2023
Back to inactive list
Vaughn (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game at Carolina, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old suited up last week against the Giants after being a healthy scratch the previous three games, and he'll return to the inactive list Sunday with Rico Dowdle (ankle) available. Vaughn has 21 carries for 38 yards and six catches for 30 yards in six games this season, and his role is unlikely to change much while Dowdle and starter Tony Pollard are healthy.
Nov 12, 2023
Garners active status Week 10
Vaughn is in line to serve as the Cowboys' punt returner in Sunday's Week 10 matchup against the Giants with KaVontae Turpin (shoulder) inactive, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The speedy rookie was last active in Week 5, and he'll now have a chance to add to the 40 rushing yards, 19 receiving yards and 10 punt return yards he's amassed in five games thus far. Vaughn could be particularly busy in his special-teams role, considering the Giants will start rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito and therefore could see plenty of drives end in punts.
Nov 5, 2023
Healthy inactive Week 9
Vaughn (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Eagles, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn will be a healthy scratch for the third straight game after garnering active status for the first five contests of his career. The rookie's next chance to return to action comes in a Week 10 home matchup against the Giants next Sunday.
Oct 29, 2023
Healthy scratch again
Vaughn (coach's decision) is inactive ahead of Sunday's game against the Rams, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie running back out of Kansas State seems to have fallen down the depth chart, as he's a healthy scratch for the second consecutive game. Vaughn has recorded 59 yards from scrimmage on 25 touches for the Cowboys this season.
Oct 16, 2023
Healthy scratch Monday
Vaughn (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Monday at the Chargers, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn's playing time has been inconsistent through five games this season, with his snap share topping out at 30 percent in the Cowboys' Week 4 blowout of the Patriots. Overall, he's averaging exactly two yards on his 20 carries and has gathered in all five of his targets for 19 yards. Dallas signaled that it was making a change in its reserve RB ranks by elevating Malik Davis ahead of Monday's contest, and indeed Vaughn is a healthy scratch with Davis and Rico Dowdle serving as the options behind starter Tony Pollard.
Oct 2, 2023
Workload could increase
Vaughn carried the ball eight times for nine yards and caught his only target for two yards in Sunday's rout of the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
While he didn't do much with the volume, this was still the most touches Vaughn has seen in an NFL game to date. The rookie's increased workload came as a result of an injury to Rico Dowdle (hip), so Vaughn could continue seeing a bigger role in the Dallas backfield behind starter Tony Pollard in Week 5 against the 49ers.
Sep 18, 2023
Flashes in Week 2 win
Vaughn carried the ball three times for 16 yards and caught all three of his targets for 16 yards in Sunday's win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
With the Cowboys routing another opponent, the depth options in the backfield behind Tony Pollard saw significant volume -- Vaughn's six touches were topped by Rico Dowdle's seven, and KaVontae Turpin handled three touches as well. After a disappointing NFL debut in Week 1, this time around Vaughn showed glimpses of the explosiveness that made him a preseason darling, with his longest gain going for 13 yards. Should anything happen to Pollard, Vaughn will be a priority target on fantasy waiver wires, even if his diminutive stature makes him unlikely to take on a true starter's workload.
Sep 11, 2023
Does little in debut
Vaughn carried the ball six times for eight yards in Sunday's 40-0 rout of the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The Cowboys were up 16-0 after the first quarter thanks to their defense and special teams and never looked back, creating some garbage-time opportunities for depth players late in the game. Vaughn failed to impress in his first NFL action though, and both Rico Dowdle (24 rushing yards on six carries) and KaVontae Turpin (14 yards and a TD on three carries) did more with their chances out of the backfield once Tony Pollard was done for the night. Vaughn made plenty of highlight reels in college and even the preseason, but the 5-foot-6 rookie still has to prove his skills can overcome his size against the highest level of competition.
Aug 29, 2023
On initial 53-man roster
Dowdle was included on the Cowboys' initial 53-man roster following roster cuts Tuesday, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Behind Tony Pollard, Dallas' situation at running back has cleared up somewhat, with Vaughn, Rico Dowdle and fellow rookie Hunter Luepke making the team over Malik Davis. With Ronald Jones suspended for the first two games of the season, Vaughn, a 2023 sixth-round pick, thus will be among the options to spell Pollard in the early going. In two preseason games, Vaughn notched 13 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns and gathered in all four targets for five yards.
Aug 20, 2023
Another rushing TD
Vaughn rushed five times for 14 yards and a touchdown, brought in his only target for minus-1 yard and returned two kickoffs for 38 yards in the Cowboys' 22-14 preseason loss to the Seahawks on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn didn't see any touches until the second half, with Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis both slotting in ahead of him. Although he was nowhere near as efficient on a per-carry basis as during Dallas' preseason-opening loss to the Jaguars, Vaughn still made the highlight reel with a nifty 14-yard touchdown run on which he spun away from would-be tacklers to cap off the Cowboys' first second-half drive. Vaughn is essentially a lock for a roster spot already, so he may actually see modest playing time in next Saturday night's exhibition finale versus the Raiders while Dowdle and Davis likely play out the final chapter of their job battle.
Aug 13, 2023
Dominates in preseason debut
Vaughn rushed eight times for 50 yards and a touchdown while catching all three of his targets for six yards in Saturday's preseason tilt against Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
Vaughn made quite the splash when he began dominating the defense in the second half of Saturday's contest. The sixth-round pick was brought in to help a position group that lacked reliable pass-catchers last year, but he showed us that he could be more than just a passing-down specialist. Vaughn just played a strong hand that could have him jumping ahead of Malik Davis -- who struggled replacing Tony Pollard (rest) -- on the depth chart come Week 1. More eyes will certainly be on Vaughn when the Cowboys visit the Seahawks on Saturday for more preseason play.
Aug 7, 2023
Strong start to camp
Vaughn has impressed the coaching staff so far in camp both as a runner and a receiver, Saad Yousef of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
While the diminutive running back's pass-catching skills were apparent in college, it wasn't clear how the rest of his game might translate to the NFL. Through early padded practices, Vaughn has shown an ability to use his 5-6 stature to his advantage by hiding behind blockers before exploding into space. The big test will be how he's able to hold up in pass protection, but if he shows he isn't a total liability, the 2023 sixth-round pick could carve out a consistent role in the offense behind lead back Tony Pollard. Malik Davis, Rico Dowdle and Ronald Jones (suspension) are the other options for backup RB snaps in Dallas.
Apr 29, 2023
Running back finds home in Dallas
The Cowboys selected Vaughn in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, 212nd overall.
ANALYSIS
Everyone will be concerned with Vaughn's small stature (5-foot-5), but all he did in college was produce, finishing with the most all-purpose yards during the 2022 campaign and tallying 22 touchdowns back in 2021 with Kansas State. The comparisons to Darren Sproles won't do Vaughn any favors given the latter's near 10-pound advantage in weight, but the 21-year-old can absolutely be an explosive weapon in an offense that already caters to a multi-dimensional back in Tony Pollard.
