Drake Maye Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Patriots vs Bengals game on Sunday with our National Football League injury report.Nov 13, 2025
Another standout effort in win
Maye completed 25 of 34 passes for 281 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while rushing four times for two yards in the Patriots' 27-14 win over the Jets on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Maye put together another signature effort, combining efficiency with some chunk plays through the air on his way to second game of over 280 yards in the last four contests. Maye did see a five-game streak of multiple touchdown passes come to an end, but he also went without an interception for the first time in four contests. The stellar second-year signal-caller connected with five targets overall, and he hit TreVeyon Henderson for his one touchdown pass from six yards out just before the midway point of the third quarter. Maye should have a very good chance of staying hot in Week 12 as well, considering the highly vulnerable Bengals defense pays a visit on Sunday, Nov. 23.
Nov 9, 2025
Connects for big plays in win
Maye completed 16 of 31 passes for 270 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while adding seven rushes for 13 yards in the Patriots' 28-23 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Maye and the Patriots offense started slowly by netting just 44 yards across 15 plays on their first two possessions, but the second-year signal-caller ignited the unit with a 72-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Williams on the sole play of New England's third drive. He'd add a fourth-down one-yard scoring toss to Stefon Diggs on the final play of the first half, and Maye ultimately finished with his fourth-highest passing yardage total of the campaign. Maye also now has a five-game multi-TD-pass streak heading into Thursday night's Week 11 home matchup against the Jets.
Nov 2, 2025
Multi-TD effort in Week 9 win
Maye completed 19 of 29 passes for 259 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 24-23 win over the Falcons. He added eight rushing attempts for 20 yards and fumbled twice, losing one.
ANALYSIS
Maye threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to DeMario Douglas in the first quarter and added an 11-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs in the second quarter to produce the second-year quarterback's eighth multi-touchdown passing performance of the season. He was picked off in the third quarter, moving Maye's TD:INT to 17:4. Maye and the surging Patriots will take a six-game winning streak into their Week 10 trip to Tampa Bay, which is one of the toughest tests on New England's historically easy schedule.
Oct 26, 2025
Tosses three more TDs in win
Maye completed 18 of 24 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns with one interception in Sunday's 32-13 win over the Browns. He added 50 rushing yards on seven carries.
ANALYSIS
The pick was his first turnover since Week 3, but otherwise it was another impressive performance from the second-year QB. Maye's 282 passing yards were his highest total since the Patriots' season opener, and he's fired multiple TD passes in six of eight games this season, leaving him with a 15:3 TD:INT. Maye will face a potentially tough test in Week 9 against a Falcons defense that had been stingy to begin the year, but which just gave up four passing TDs to Tua Tagovailoa.
Oct 19, 2025
Highly efficient against Titans
Maye completed 21 of 23 passes for 222 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 31-13 win over the Titans. He added eight rushes for 62 yards.
ANALYSIS
The Patriots pulled away from the Titans midway through the third quarter and also scored a defensive touchdown, both of which limited Maye's pass attempts. However, he was excellent with his opportunity, completing four passes of at least 20 yards -- highlighted by a 39-yard touchdown toss to Kayshon Boutte late in the second quarter to give New England a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Mayelso supplemented his work through the air with his highest rushing total of the campaign. He has now thrown for multiple touchdowns and averaged over 9.0 yards per attempt in five of seven games this season.
Oct 12, 2025
Tosses three TDs in win
Maye completed 18 of 26 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday's 25-19 win over the Saints. He added a team-high 28 rushing yards on nine carries and also ran in a two-point conversion.
ANALYSIS
The second-year QB was sharp right from the coin toss, hitting DeMario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte for long TDs in the first quarter before adding another 29-yard score to Boutte just before halftime right after New Orleans had taken a 16-14 lead. Maye has tossed multiple touchdowns in four of the last five games, posting an impressive 9:1 TD:INT over that stretch and leading New England to three straight wins. He'll look to keep rolling in Week 7 against the Titans.
Oct 6, 2025
Earns win in tough road environment
Maye completed 22 of 30 pass attempts for 273 yards, no touchdowns and no turnovers while taking three carries for 12 yards in Sunday's 23-20 win over Buffalo.
ANALYSIS
Maye continued his impressive development in Week 5 despite failing to score a touchdown for the first time this season. The sophomore signal-caller did the dirty work between the 20s, leading a pair of lengthy drives in the second half that RB Rhamondre Stevenson finished off with short rushing scores. Maye is completing an impressive 73.9 percent of his pass attempts through five starts, leading New England to a surprising 3-2 start to the campaign. The North Carolina product should continue offering starter-level production in fantasy in a road tilt against the Saints next Sunday.
Sep 28, 2025
Near perfect in easy win
Maye completed 14 of 17 passes for 203 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and rushed three times for 11 yards and another score in the Patriots' 42-13 win over the Panthers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Maye's ultra-efficient stat line underscores how effective he was throughout the afternoon, and given New England's all-around dominance, he didn't need to do much as a passer after a certain point. The second-year signal-caller was dominant throughout the afternoon, and he connected with seven different targets overall while hitting Hunter Henry and Mack Hollins for his pair of scoring tosses. Maye added his second rushing touchdown of the campaign on a five-yard run to open the second quarter, and he'll be looking to extend his streak of games with two TD passes to four when New England visits Buffalo for a Week 5 road showdown next Sunday night.
Sep 21, 2025
Throws two scores in Week 3 loss
Maye completed 28 of 37 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in Sunday's 21-14 loss to the Steelers. He added 45 rushing yards on seven carries.
ANALYSIS
The second-year QB found Hunter Henry for scores in the second and fourth quarters, but the rest of the Patriots' offense struggled on the afternoon, especially on the ground -- Maye led the team in rushing yards, and RBs Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson combined to lose three fumbles. Maye has a 5:2 TD:INT through three games to begin his sophomore season, but in Week 4 he faces a Panthers defense that surprisingly just shut out the Falcons, and his fellow 2024 first-round pick Michael Penix.
Sep 14, 2025
Three total TDs in Week 2 win
Maye completed 19 of 23 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 10 times for 31 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 33-27 win over the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Maye tossed first-quarter touchdown passes of eight yards to Mack Hollins and 16 yards to Kayshon Boutte, then ran in a six-yard touchdown in the third quarter. The 2024 third overall pick has demonstrated consistent playmaking ability with his legs, reaching 30 rushing yards in seven of his first 14 NFL starts. This was only his fifth game with multiple touchdown passes, but Maye tied his career best in completion percentage Sunday, suggesting he's improving as a passer heading into a Week 3 home game against the Steelers, who have surprisingly allowed 31.5 points per game this season.
Sep 7, 2025
High-volume passing day in loss
Maye completed 30 of 46 passes for 287 yards with a touchdown and an interception and added four rushes for 11 yards in the Patriots' 20-13 loss to the Raiders on Sunday. He also committed a fumble recovered by New England.
ANALYSIS
Beginning his what is to be his first full season as a starter, Maye fought an uphill battle for most of the afternoon in a game where the Patriots found themselves down 7-0 after the game's opening possession. He would ultimately help keep New England competitive with a two-yard touchdown toss to Demario Douglas to knot the score at 7-7 later in the first quarter, and he would also lead a late 10-play drive that would culminate in a field goal and put New England within seven points. Maye did an excellent job spreading the ball around by recording completions to nine different pass catchers, and he'll head into a Week 2 divisional road battle against what was a generous Dolphins secondary in Week 1 with plenty of momentum.

Not suited up Thursday
Maye isn't in uniform in advance of Thursday's preseason game at the Giants, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Maye logged two drives apiece in both of the Patriots' first two exhibitions, completing seven of 12 passes for 58 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions, rushing twice for 16 yards and a TD and losing a fumble. He thus has a number of reps under his belt ahead of his second campaign after throwing for 2,276 yards and a 15:10 TD:INT on 66.6 percent passing and turning 54 carries into 421 yards and two scores in 13 regular-season appearances (12 starts) as a rookie.
Aug 16, 2025
Leads TD drive Saturday
Maye completed four of seven passes for 46 yards in Saturday's 20-12 preseason win over the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
The second-year QB didn't add any yards on the ground or toss any TDs in two drives before checking out of the contest, but Maye did help position the Patriots for an eight-yard TreVeyon Henderson rushing score in the first quarter. Maye got his supporting cast upgraded this offseason with the additions of Henderson and Stefon Diggs (knee), and New England is counting on the third overall pick in the 2024 Draft to take a big step forward in 2025.
Aug 8, 2025
Better with legs than arm
Maye completed three of five passes for 12 yards in Friday's 48-18 preseason win over the Commanders. He added two rushing attempts for 16 yards and a touchdown but also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Maye played two drives. He turned the ball over with a fumble on the first but capped the second with a five-yard rushing touchdown. Maye has posted pedestrian passing stats in his young NFL career, but the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has been an effective scrambler, rushing for 30-plus yards in half of his 12 regular-season starts as a rookie. Maye will look to sharpen his passing in the Patriots' second preseason game against the Vikings on Aug. 16.
Aug 8, 2025
On track to see snaps Friday
Based on warmups, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site notes that Maye worked with the team's top offense.
ANALYSIS
Also out there with the second-year QB in that context were RB Rhamondre Stevenson, WRs DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins, along with TE Hunter Henry. Meanwhile WR Stefon Diggs wasn't spotted in warmups, which is not surprising given that he's bouncing back from an ACL tear he suffered Week 8 of last season. Coach Mike Vrabel previously indicated that "most everybody that's healthy should expect to play in the game," and Maye indeed appears to be on track to log snaps versus Washington.
Aug 8, 2025
Expected to see snaps Friday
The expectation is that Maye will see some action in Friday's preseason opener against the Commanders, Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Maye's playing status for Friday's contest hasn't been confirmed by the team, earlier this week coach Mike Vrabel did note that "most everybody that's healthy should expect to play in the game. How long they'll play, I don't know, but we have to prepare to play in football games and prepare to win football games." Also in the mix to see QB snaps for the Patriots versus Washington are Joshua Dobbs and Ben Wooldridge.

Finding stride in Year 2
Maye has looked sharp in practice of late, according to Evan Lazar of Patriots.com.
ANALYSIS
Per Lazar, Maye turned in another solid effort during Monday's minicamp session, continuing a trend that has seen the young QB demonstrate signs of improvement this spring as he adjusts to new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' system. Though the team's practices at this stage are of the non-contact variety, Maye's progress is nonetheless encouraging, with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft noting that he's "starting to really find a stride" as next month's training camp approaches. After logging 2,276 passing yards and a 15:10 TD:INT ratio in 13 appearances as a rookie, Maye enters his second campaign as a pro entrenched as New England's franchise QB, with the 22-year-old's 2025 fantasy prospects buoyed by a series of offseason additions aimed at improving his supporting cast. While it remains to be seen how productive the team's re-tooled wideout corps will be out of the gate this season, a context that affects Maye's short-term upside, the North Carolina product's wheels could still help him l

Quick exit in Week 18 win
Maye (hand) failed to complete his only pass attempt before giving way to Joe Milton in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Bills.
ANALYSIS
The rookie QB was bothered by an issue with his throwing hand during practice this week, and with nothing on the line in Week 18, the Patriots pulled Maye after one series rather than risk further injury. The third overall pick in the 2024 Draft finishes his first NFL campaign with a 66.6 percent completion rate, 2,276 passing yards and a 15:10 TD:INT in 13 appearances, and improving his ball security as well as his production will be the focus for 2025. Maye will also be learning a new offense, as head coach Jerod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt were let go immediately after Sunday's game.
Jan 5, 2025
Active versus Bills
Maye (right hand) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Maye was listed as limited in practice this week, before approaching the 3-13 Patriots' season finale with a 'questionable' designation. With his active status versus a Bills team that's locked into the No. 2 playoff seed in the AFC now confirmed, Maye is in line to close out his rookie campaign in the starting lineup, though as Mike Reiss of ESPN notes, it's possible that 2024 sixth-rounder Joe Milton could enter Sunday's contest at some point, either by design (to get him some snaps for evaluation purposes) or as the result of Week 18 game flow.
Jan 3, 2025
Status in question for Sunday
Maye (right hand) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bills, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite being limited in practice all week and listed as such for Week 18 action, Maye is expected to be under center this weekend, as coach Jarod Mayo told Mike Reiss of ESPN.com on Wednesday and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt relayed to Ben Volin of The Boston Globe on Thursday. The Patriots will post their list of inactives about 90 minutes before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, so a decision on Maye's status should become known by that point. Jacoby Brissett and Joe Milton are the other signal-callers on New England's active roster.
Jan 2, 2025
Another limited practice
Maye (right hand) remained limited at practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Per Ben Volin of The Boston Globe, Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt indicated Thursday that Maye is in line to start Sunday's game against the Bills, who are locked into the No. 2 AFC playoff seed, but the QB may need to practice fully Friday in order to avoid a Week 18 injury designation. In any case, while Maye appears on track to close out the regular season in the starting lineup, it remains plausible that 2024 sixth-rounder Joe Milton could enter Sunday's contest at some point, either by design or as a product of game flow.
Jan 1, 2025
Limited by hand issue
Maye (right hand) was limited at practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Mike Reiss of ESPN previously relayed via head coach Jerod Mayo that the Patriots (who would secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft with a loss to Buffalo) planned to play all of their healthy starters in Sunday's regular season finale against the Bills. With regard to Maye specifically, Mayo noted Wednesday "Drake is our starting quarterback. If he's healthy and ready to go, as we go through this week of practice, then he'll play." However, now that Maye is on New England's Week 18 injury report, his status will be worth monitoring in the coming days.
Jan 1, 2025
In line to start Sunday
Maye is expected to start Sunday's regular-season finale against the Bills, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Reiss, the 3-13 Patriots -- who would secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft with a loss to Buffalo -- plan to play all their healthy starters in Week 18. With that in mind, head coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday, "Drake is our starting quarterback. If he's healthy and ready to go, as we go through this week of practice, then he'll play. He's a competitor, he wants to play and he's still developing. He'll be ready to go." While it looks like Maye will draw the start versus the Bills, who are locked into the AFC's No. 2 seed, it's still possible that New England could elect to give 2024 sixth-rounder Joe Milton some playing time at some point during Sunday's contest.
Dec 28, 2024
Struggles against tough defense
Maye completed 12 of 22 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown against the Chargers on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Maye briefly left the game in the first quarter for a concussion evaluation, but the team doctors evidently concluded Maye was fine. The problem is that the Chargers defense dominated anyway, rarely giving the Patriots breathing room outside of a 36-yard touchdown strike to DeMario Douglas on a free play. Given the conditions, Maye was promising overall, even though the game was a bleak one for the Patriots. They'll attempt to regain their dignity against the Bills in Week 18.
Dec 28, 2024
Returns to game
Maye (head) has returned to Saturday's game against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Maye, who was forced out the contest due to a head injury and had been replaced by Jacoby Brissett, was subsequently cleared to return to action and is now back in at QB for the Patriots versus Los Angeles.
Dec 28, 2024
Exit's Saturday's game
Maye was forced out of Saturday's game against the Chargers with a head injury.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his first-quarter exit from the contest, Maye completed his only pass attempt for one yard. In his absence, Jacoby Brissett is next up at quarterback for the Patriots.
Dec 23, 2024
Shows promise in loss
Maye completed 22 of 36 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 24-21 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Maye got the New England offense rolling early by completing a well-placed 28-yard touchdown pass to Kayshon Boutte on the team's first drive. He went on to complete three additional passes that went for at least 20 yards -- matching his best mark of the season -- while also throwing multiple touchdowns in a game for the first time since Week 11. There were plenty of positives to take away from the performance, but Maye was responsible for two turnovers, one of which came on a failed lateral to Rhamondre Stevenson that was recovered in the end zone by Buffalo for a touchdown.
Dec 15, 2024
Mixed results in loss
Maye completed 19 of 23 pass attempts for 202 yards, one touchdown and one interception while rushing four times for 14 yards and another score in Sunday's 30-17 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Maye scored a pair of garbage-time touchdowns in the fourth quarter to help pad his fantasy score, but the rookie couldn't avoid throwing an interception for the sixth week in a row. The North Carolina product now owns a poor 1.3 TD/INT ratio through nine starts as a rookie. Maye could see a bump in projections in a road tilt against the Bills, assuming the Patriots fall behind big early and the weather is tolerable in Buffalo. That said, his value is limited to two-QB formats in Week 16.
Dec 1, 2024
Interception streak at five games
Maye completed 24 of 30 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown with an interception in Sunday's 25-24 loss to the Colts. He added 59 rushing yards on five carries and threw a two-point conversion.
ANALYSIS
It was a mostly efficient performance from the rookie quarterback, but Maye's red-zone INT late in the third quarter ended up being very costly in a one-point loss. He's been picked off at least once in five straight games, posting a 6:6 TD:INT over that stretch, but growing pains are to be expected from the third overall pick in the 2024 Draft. Maye will get a chance to regroup during the Patriots' Week 14 bye.
Nov 24, 2024
Rookie struggles in loss
Maye completed 22 of 37 passes for 221 yards with a touchdown and an interception while rushing five times for 26 yards in the Patriots' 34-15 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Maye's final numbers were serviceable enough to belie some of the difficulties he experienced throughout the afternoon, which included taking four sacks in addition to his pair of turnovers. The rookie couldn't lead the Patriots to any points until the game was out of reach in the fourth quarter and he connected with Austin Hooper for a 38-yard touchdown pass, extending his streak of at least one scoring toss to four games. Maye's pair of miscues led to a total of 10 points for the Dolphins, but he'll have a chance at redemption against an inconsistent Colts defense when the Patriots host Indianapolis in Week 13.
Nov 17, 2024
Two TDs, two turnovers in loss
Maye completed 30 of 40 passes for 282 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 28-22 loss to the Rams. He also rushed three times for 27 yards and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Maye threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Bourne in the first quarter and a four-yard touchdown pass to offensive lineman Vederian Lowe in the fourth. This was the third time in six starts that Maye mustered multiple touchdown passes, but the lack of talent around him continues to limit Maye's fantasy upside as he adjusts to the NFL. The third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has much more value in dynasty and keeper formats than redraft leagues considering he has as many turnovers as touchdown passes (nine), and Maye's fantasy upside will be limited in a Week 12 matchup against a stingy Dolphins secondary.
Nov 10, 2024
Carried to win by defense
Maye completed 15 of 25 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown with an interception in Sunday's 19-3 win over the Bears. He added 24 rushing yards on four carries.
ANALYSIS
The third overall pick in the 2024 Draft got the better of Caleb Williams, the first overall pick, in their first career meeting, but neither rookie quarterback sparkled. Maye did account for the only TD of the game however, finding Ja'Lynn Polk for a two-yard score late in the second quarter to put the Patriots in the lead for good. Maye has a 7:5 TD:INT in five games since taking over the starting job at QB, and he'll look to take advantage of a better matchup in Week 11 at home against the Rams.
Nov 3, 2024
Solid numbers despite miscues
Maye completed 29 of 41 passes for 206 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday's 20-17 overtime loss to the Titans. He added eight rushes for 95 yards and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Maye played his part in a sloppy game, losing a fumble that gave the Titans a short field to record the go-ahead touchdown and also throwing the game-clinching pick. On the other hand, he also continued to flash moments of brilliance, highlighted by a five-yard touchdown pass to tie the game as time expired, during which he evaded pressure for several seconds and made the throw as he was being taken to the ground. The majority of his other playmaking came with his legs by tallying long scrambles of 26 and 22 yards. Maye's performance remains inconsistent, but he has shown the ability to lead New England's offense effectively and has been a strong fantasy contributor in the first three starts of his career.
Nov 2, 2024
Clears concussion protocol
Maye has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol and no longer carries an injury designation ahead of Sunday's game against the Titans.
ANALYSIS
As a result, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft -- who had been listed as questionable after sustaining a concussion last weekend against the Jets -- is line to make his fourth straight start for the Patriots on Sunday, per Evan Lazar of the team's official site. With Maye under center, New England's passing game has been able to pick up the pace, but the rookie out of North Carolina profiles as a hit-or-miss fantasy option while facing the Titans, who head into Week 9 action allowing a league-low 151.6 passing yards per game.
Nov 1, 2024
Questionable for Sunday
Maye (concussion) officially is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
Maye was able to handle limited work in all three practices during Week 9 prep, giving him a chance to miss no time as a result of the concussion he sustained this past Sunday against the Jets. Having said that, he'll still need to gain clearance from an independent neurologist in order to suit up this weekend. At the latest, Maye's status will be confirmed, one way or another, about 90 minutes before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff. Jacoby Brissett is on hand to start if Maye doesn't pass through the protocol for head injuries.
Nov 1, 2024
Limited again, may still play Sunday
Head coach Jerod Mayo said that Maye (concussion) will be a limited participant in Friday's practice, but the Patriots haven't yet ruled the quarterback out from playing in Sunday's game against the Titans, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mayo added that Maye remains in the concussion protocol, after the rookie quarterback suffered the head injury on a helmet-to-helmet hit during this past Sunday's win over the Jets. Though Maye was cleared to practice Wednesday as a limited participant, he has yet to increase his activity in the two days that have followed. The Patriots are likely to list Maye as questionable or doubtful for the Week 9 contest when they release their final injury report later Friday, and though Mayo is leaving the door open for the 22-year-old to play Sunday, Jacoby Brissett is probably trending toward starting against the Titans at this point in the week.
Oct 31, 2024
Another limited practice
Maye (concussion) remained limited at practice Thursday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Back-to-back limited sessions set the stage for what Maye is able to do at practice Friday to loom large in terms of his chances of facing the Titans on Sunday. If the QB is unable to progress fully through the NFL's concussion protocol before then, however, Jacoby Brissett would be in line to draw the start against Tennessee.
Oct 30, 2024
Set for limited practice
Maye (concussion) will be a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed that Maye is still in concussion protocol, with the quarterback slated to do some throwing at Wednesday's practice. Maye's involvement in the Patriots' first Week 9 practice session provides hope that he could be available Sunday against the Titans, but the young signal-caller will still need to clear all five steps of the protocol for that to happen. If Maye is not active this weekend, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald notes that Joe Milton would back up Jacoby Brissett in Week 9.
Oct 27, 2024
Done for day with concussion
Maye was diagnosed with a concussion after exiting in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Jets and has been ruled out for the remainder of the contest.
ANALYSIS
Maye appeared to suffer the head injury when he took a helmet-to-helmet hit during a scramble on the Patriots' third possession. Though he stayed in the game for the remainder of the drive, he gave way to backup Jacoby Brissett on the Patriots' next possession while he headed to the locker room for a concussion test. Brissett will now direct the New England offense for the rest of the day, while Joe Milton -- who is inactive as the emergency third quarterback -- will be the next man up for reps if Brissett is forced to leave the game early. Maye completed three of six pass attempts for 23 yards and carried three times for 46 yards and a touchdown prior to his departure.
Oct 27, 2024
Exits Sunday's game
Maye exited Sunday's game against the Jets due to a head injury.
ANALYSIS
Per Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, Maye took a hit to the back of his helmet during a scramble, and now the QB is questionable to return to action Sunday. In his absence, Jacoby Brissett has entered the game.
Oct 20, 2024
Another encouraging start
Maye completed 26 of 37 passes for 276 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 32-16 loss to the Jaguars. He added three rushes for 18 yards.
ANALYSIS
Maye got off to an impressive start, leading a touchdown drive on the Patriots' first possession while going 6-for-7 with 62 yards and a passing score. However, both he and the offense stalled from there until early in the fourth quarter, when Maye led a second scoring drive during which he completed five of six passes for 97 yards and another touchdown. Even during the unproductive stretches of the contest, Maye showed improvement from his first NFL start by not turning the ball over. While he'll seek more consistency as he gains more experience, Maye has had an encouraging start to his career.
Oct 17, 2024
Another full practice
Maye (knee) practiced fully again Thursday, Zack Cox of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Per the report, Maye -- who also worked fully Wednesday -- didn't display any visible limitations during the media-access portion of Thursday's practice and didn't appear to be wearing a brace. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt noted prior to the session that he's "not concerned" about the QB's knee issue ahead of Week 7 action, with 2024 first-rounder thus on track to start Sunday's game against the Jaguars at Wembley Stadium.
Oct 17, 2024
Knee issue downplayed
Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt downplayed Maye's (knee) presence on the the Patriots' Week 7 injury report, noting Thursday that he's "not concerned," adding that the rookie QB "looked good" to him Wednesday, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site and Mike Reiss of ESPN.com report.
ANALYSIS
Maye was listed as a full participant on Wednesday's injury report, and unless the QB's participation level decreases Thursday or Friday, he should approach Sunday's game against the Jaguars without an injury designation. Added context on that front is slated to arrive once the Patriots' second injury report of the week is posted Thursday.
Oct 13, 2024
Three TDs, three TOs in first start
Maye completed 20 of 33 passes for 243 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 41-21 loss to the Texans. He added five rushing attempts for 38 yards and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
After leading the offense to a 3-and-out on the first drive of his first NFL start, Maye was picked off on the next possession. He struggled early but finally produced New England's first points of the game with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kayshon Boutte in the final minute of the first half. That play didn't create any momentum, as Maye lost a fumble on the second play of the second half. He later threw touchdown passes of six yards to Hunter Henry and 35 yards to DeMario Douglas as the Patriots unsuccessfully tried to climb out of a 27-7 hole, sandwiching another interception between those two scores. Maye has yet to prove he can find success while a game is still within reach, but a Week 7 London matchup against a Jaguars secondary that just allowed four touchdown passes to fellow rookie quarterback Caleb Williams is as good an opportunity as any for Maye to prove himself.

QB switch confirmed
Coach Jerod Mayo confirmed Wednesday that Maye will start Sunday's game against the Texans, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
While confirming the team's switch from veteran QB Jacoby Brissett to the rookie first-rounder, Mayo noted "we are trying to win every game. At the time, we thought that Jacoby would give us the best chance...Going forward, Drake gives us the best chance to win now." Maye thus assumes the starting role for the 1-4 Patriots, who head into Week 6 action averaging just 12.4 points per game. While the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft will be working behind an offensive line with question marks, and throwing to a wide receiver corps that ranks last in the NFL in catches (39) and receiving yards (342), per Mike Reiss of ESPN, Maye does possess the sort of arm talent and mobility that could help spark New England's stagnant offense, while at the same time providing a degree of fantasy utility in deeper formats.

Taking over as starter
The Patriots are planning to have Maye start Sunday's game against the Texans, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
While New England has yet to officially confirm that Maye will replace Jacoby Brissett as the team's starting quarterback, expect head coach Jerod Mayo to announce the change when he meets with the media ahead of the team's first Week 6 practice Wednesday. The decision to turn to Maye -- the No. 3 overall pick in April's draft -- isn't a major surprise, as the Patriots had struggled to a 1-4 start while Brissett directed an offense that averaged 250.8 yards and 12.4 points per game over the first five weeks, both of which are the second-worst marks in the NFL. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Maye boasts an ideal frame for a quarterback and is blessed with a strong arm and good mobility, but his fantasy upside could be limited in 2024 due to the Patriots' shaky offensive line and a dearth of high-quality pass-catching threats.

Makes pro debut in fourth quarter
Maye replaced Jacoby Brissett with 4:24 remaining in the Patriots' 24-3 loss to the Jets on Thursday night and completed four of eight passes for 22 yards while adding two rushes for 12 yards.
ANALYSIS
Maye ended up helming a ragged 16-play, 46-yard drive that encompassed the final 4:24 of the game and culminated with the rookie third overall pick taking a sack at the Jets' 12-yard line. Maye's longest completion came on the final pass he got off, a 15-yard connection with DeMario Douglas. Brissett threw for just 98 yards and averaged 5.4 yards per attempts while taking five sacks, so it remains to be seen if Maye, who was essentially just as ineffective over a more condensed period, will be considered for a daunting Week 4 road start against the 49ers on Sunday, Sept. 29.

Added reps part of development plan
Coach Jerod Mayo noted that Maye is getting about 30 percent of the reps with the Patriots' top offense in practice, as part of the young QB's development plan, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com and Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald report.
ANALYSIS
Veteran signal caller Jacoby Brissett, who led the team to a Week 1 win over the Bengals, remains the Patriots' starter at this stage, but Mayo acknowledged that Maye -- the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft - is seeing more first-team reps than a typical backup would, with an eye toward preparing him for an eventual ascent to the top of the depth chart down the road. "Normally, it's the starter gets let's say 95 percent of the reps, and the backup doesn't," Mayo relayed Friday. "With this a little bit different. And we had a conversation. How do we, I guess the struggle is, how do you get your starting quarterback prepared for the game and also continue to develop the guy in the background, which is Drake. And so it is like a 70/30 split."

Backing up Brissett in Week 1
Coach Jerod Mayo has informed his team that Jacoby Brissett will be the Patriots' starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Bengals, while Maye will be the backup, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Brissett appeared to have the upper hand in the competition for much of the summer, Maye -- the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft -- made a late push for the job. However, the Patriots coaching staff ultimately elected to turn to Brissett (who has 48 career NFL starts under his belt) to helm the offense to begin the season. That said, Maye, who turns 22 on Friday, is no doubt viewed as the team's quarterback of the future, and the North Carolina product has plenty of upside down the road, given that he has the prototypical size (6-foot-4, 225 pounds), arm talent and mobility of a potential star signal-caller as a pro.

Starter to be announced Thursday
Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday that the team has made a decision between Maye and Jacoby Brissett (shoulder) as the Week 1 starter, but that an announcement won't be made until Thursday, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Mayo stated Monday, before New England's roster cuts, that Maye had outperformed Brissett in recent weeks, but he also acknowledged hesitancy to start the rookie quarterback immediately. Brissett's shoulder injury doesn't appear likely to impact his performance Week 1, so that shouldn't factor into Mayo's decision making. If there are any concerns that New England's offense currently has some wrinkles to iron out before putting Maye in the best position to succeed, though, that could be enough reason for the team to lean on Brissett to kick off the regular season.

No lock for Week 1 start
Coach Jerod Mayo acknowledged Monday that Maye outplayed Jacoby Brissett (shoulder) the past few weeks, but Mayo also said he's wary of "the horror stories of rookie QBs getting thrown to the wolves," Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a not-so-subtle acknowledgment that the Patriots wouldn't have Maye in the best position for immediate success, putting him behind a shaky offensive line while throwing to a mix of young, unproven players and mediocre veterans. The third overall pick completed 21 of 34 passes (61.8 percent) for 192 yards and a TD this preseason, adding seven carries for 32 yards and another TD, while Brissett was 5-of-14 for 36 yards and an interception (without any rush attempts). The gap between the two presumably hasn't been so pronounced in practice, and Graff suggests that Mayo is probably leaning toward Brissett for the Week 1 start against Cincinnati even though Maye was better in the preseason games. Mayo downplayed the right shoulder injury that Brissett suffered during Sunday's preseason loss to Washington.

Makes case to take starting job
Maye completed 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 20-10 preseason loss to the Commanders. He added three rushes for 17 yards.
ANALYSIS
Maye followed Jacoby Brissett (shoulder) into the game but took over on the second offensive drive. He got off to a shaky start with two aborted snaps in his first six plays, but he settled in and made a number of impressive throws. His longest completion of the day came on a 29-yard completion across the middle of the field to Ja'Lynn Polk. More importantly, Maye showed command of the pocket, escaping pressure when needed while also making some throws on the run -- two of which were negated be penalties. This performance ends an impressive initial preseason during which Maye has made his case to start Week 1 against the Bengals, though Brissett is still likely the favorite if he proves to be healthy.

Set to face Commanders on Sunday
Maye is slated to play in Sunday's preseason finale against the Commanders, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Jerod Mayo revealed Friday that Jacoby Brissett would start the contest, with Maye, Bailey Zappe and Joe Milton also in line to see action versus Washington. Per Chad Graffof The Athletic the Patriots hope to decide on a Week 1 starting QB (between Brissett and Maye) by Monday night, but as the team's final exhibition game approaches, Mayo acknowledged that "it's still a competition and Jacoby is still QB1." That said, on Sunday, Maye will have one more chance to make a case to overtake his veteran counterpart before the team's plans for a Sept. 8 matchup against the Bengals are solidified.

Competing to start Week 1
Coach Jerod Mayo said Friday that Mayo has made strides and is competing for the Week 1 starting job, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Jacoby Brissett has taken most of the first-team practice reps in practice and started the first two preseason games, but his performance in the preseason hasn't helped his cause, with the veteran completing three of 10 passes for 17 yards and throwing an ugly end-zone interception. While Maye's passing stats haven't been great -- 8-of-14 for 66 yards, with no TDs or INTs -- he was much better than Brissett in Thursday's 14-13 loss to the Eagles, running for a TD in the second quarter and later throwing a perfect deep ball that was dropped by fellow rookie Javon Baker. Mayo said he'll talk with the rest of the coaching staff Friday before deciding if it's time to give Maye more first-team reps in practice, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports. Mayo also hinted at more playing time to come in the final week of the preseason, saying, "I think the entire offense definitely needs to play and continue to jell, and that's what we're going to do."

Runs in TD as Brissett struggles
Maye completed six of 11 passes for 47 yards while rushing four times for 15 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 14-13 preseason loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Maye played the second and third quarters after Jacoby Brissett mustered only three completions, no points and an interception in three first-quarter drives. While Maye was only marginally better with his arm, the rookie third overall pick showed off his wheels by running in a four-yard touchdown on an option play in the second quarter. Maye's inability to add points in the third quarter showed why Brissett remains the favorite to open the regular season as the starter under center, but neither quarterback has exactly seized the job heading into the Aug. 25 preseason finale against the Commanders.

To see more reps Thursday
After playing just one series in the Patriots' preseason opener, Maye is set to see increased action Thursday night against the Eagles, Albert Breer of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Breer, look for Jacoby Brissett to play the first quarter, followed by Maye in the second quarter and into the third, with Joe Milton and Bailey Zappe on track to finish the contest. While Maye -- the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft -- is clearly the Patriots' franchise QB of the future, Brissett remains the team's presumed starter ahead of Week 1.

Plays one series in preseason win
Maye completed two of three passes for 19 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the Patriots' 17-3 preseason win over the Panthers on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Maye followed Jacoby Brissett into the game, and like his veteran teammate, the rookie third overall pick was only in the game for one series. However, Maye was able to put together a serviceable line relative to his brief time in the game, initially connecting on a 13-yard screen pass to Antonio Gibson before hitting Gibson's backfield mate Kevin Harris for another six yards. That leaves Maye still searching for his first completion to a wide receiver or tight end, a matter he should have ample chance of rectifying during the Patriots' second preseason game next Thursday night against the Eagles.

To play in preseason opener
Coach Jerod Mayo said Tuesday that Maye will play in Thursday's preseason contest against the Panthers, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Maye has spent training camp working behind veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who remains the favorite to open the 2024 campaign as New England's starter. The rookie No. 3 overall pick has reportedly had an up-and-down camp, but Albert Breer of SI.com reports that many of those struggles can be attributed to working with the second-string O-line, and that Maye has nonetheless impressed the coaching staff with his vision. Brissett figures to start Thursday's exhibition matchup, but it will be interesting to see whether Maye also gets a chance to work with the first-team offense.

Behind Brissett but has a chance
Coach Jerod Mayo said Tuesday that Maye will "absolutely" have a chance to earn a starting job even though Jacoby Brissett is viewed as the Patriots' top quarterback, Chris Mason of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
"If [Maye] comes out here and he lights it up... it could absolutely happen," Mayo said, before adding that Bailey Zappe or Joe Milton could also win the job if they play well enough this summer. It's a lot of coach-speak, but the main point seems to be that Brissett will get most (or all) of the first-team reps early in training camp. Mayo also denied that concerns about the New England offensive line could be a factor in QB decisions, which is what you'd expect him to say publicly even if it isn't true. That said, Maye's status as a No. 3 overall pick means he'll almost certainly make starts this season -- be it in September or December -- even if the O-line struggles or other circumstances make success unlikely.

Impresses offensive coordinator
Since joining the Patriots, Maye has made a good impression on offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt,Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
"He's been impressive," Van Pelt noted Tuesday before the team's voluntary practice, during which Maye took No. 2 QB snaps behind Jacoby Brissett after having previously been the No. 3 option. Meanwhile, Van Pelt reiterated that Brissett remains viewed as the team's top signal caller at this stage, adding that there's no timetable for when Maye -- the No. 3 overall pick in April's draft -- might ascend to the top of the depth chart. "I think you have to take that as it comes," Van Pelt said. "There is no timetable. Jacoby, again, is our starter and he's playing excellent football for us in the spring. And Drake is coming on. So until that changes, we're going to stick with what we got."

Will compete with Brissett
According to coach Jerod Mayo, Maye and veteran QB Jacoby Brissett are slated to compete for the Patriots' starting job in the coming months, Cameron Wolfe of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In relation to which of the signal callers will get the Week 1 assignment, Mayo noted "I would say we're going to compete all spring, we're going to compete during training camp, and the best player will start." As the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye is no doubt viewed as the team's QB of the future, but given his limited experience (just 26 collegiate starts) and that he doesn't turn 22 until August, it's plausible that he could work behind Brissett early on during his pro career. With that in mind, Maye's standing in re-draft leagues isn't as high as it is in dynasty formats, but the North Carolina's product's upside is undeniable, given that he has the prototypical size (6-foot-4, 223 pounds), arm talent and mobility of a potential star NFL quarterback.
