Giving way to Flacco on Sunday
Browning is set to move into a backup role with Joe Flacco having been named the starting QB for Sunday's game against the Packers, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
With the Browning having gone 0-3 as a starter since taking over for franchise QB Joe Burrow (toe) -- who is on IR -- in Week 3, the Bengals traded for Flacco on Tuesday. Coach Zac Taylor then quickly made the change at signal-caller, while noting Wednesday, per Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, that Flacco's "style fits our style" and that the 40-year-old will take all the first-team QB reps ahead of Week 6 action.

Likely bound for backup role
Browning is expected to move into a backup role at quarterback for Sunday's game against the Packers after the Bengals acquired Joe Flacco from the Browns on Tuesday, Jay Morrison of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Morrison, the expectation is that Flacco will arrive at Cincinnati in time to take first-team reps at Wednesday's practice, and assuming the veteran signal-caller absorbs the new playbook quickly, he'll take over as the Bengals' new starter. As the Bengals' starter for the past three games, Browning led the team to an 0-3 record while completing 64.1 percent of his passes for just 5.6 yards per attempt, and he had thrown eight interceptions in total over 14-plus quarters since replacing an injured Joe Burrow (toe) midway through the team's Week 2 win over the Jaguars. Flacco -- who posted a 2:6 TD:INT and 5.1 YPA in four starts for Cleveland before being benched last week -- hasn't fared any better than Browning this season, but his longer track record of sustained success in the NFL looks like it'll be enough for him to serve as the team's preferred option under center until Burrow potentially returns later on in the campaign.

Not guaranteed to start Week 6
Speaking with the media Monday, coach Zac Taylor refused to commit to Browning starting Sunday's game against the Packers, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
"We'll see," Taylor said when questioned about Browning starting at Green Bay. Taylor added that he's evaluating everything. When coaches start to distance themselves from the quarterback, it tends to signal an upcoming change. Browning has been downright horrific under center in three starts since Joe Burrow's toe injury. Browning completely bottomed out against the Lions on Sunday, throwing three more interceptions to push his season total to eight in just four appearances. He padded his stats late in garbage time. The Bengals haven't even been competitive the last three weeks with Browning at quarterback. Other options currently in the organization are Brett Rypien, Mike White and Sean Clifford. It's a dire situation.
Oct 6, 2025
Pads stats late
Browning completed 26 of 40 passes for 251 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in Sunday's 37-24 loss to the Lions. He added four rushes for 31 yards.
ANALYSIS
Browning's final line looks relatively positive, but he threw three interceptions by early in the third quarter that led directly to 14 points for the Lions. He salvaged his performance late in the contest with the help of heroics from Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, connecting with the duo for scores of 15, 64 and two yards. To add a final insult to the day, Browning was sacked for a safety to conclude the Bengals' final possession. While he looked to be one of the better backups in the league for the final seven games of 2023, Browning has six touchdowns as compared to eight interceptions while averaging only 6.1 yards per attempt in four games this season.
Sep 29, 2025
Uninspiring performance in loss
Browning completed 14 of 25 passes for 125 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions while adding three rushes for four yards in the Bengals' 28-3 loss to the Broncos on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
About the only true positive for Browning in the lopsided loss was that he managed to avoid turning the ball over against a ferocious Broncos defense. Browning took three sacks and averaged only 5.0 yards per attempt, with no Bengals pass catcher managing to exceed 32 receiving yards. Browning has completed just 63.4 percent of his passes and posted a 1:2 TD:INT over his first two full games as a starter, so it remains to be seen if head coach Zac Taylor considers a change to fellow backup Brett Rypien for a Week 5 home matchup against the Lions.
Sep 21, 2025
Rough afternoon in lopsided loss
Browning completed 19 of 27 passes for 140 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and rushed once for three yards in the Bengals' 48-10 loss to the Vikings on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The Vikings jumped on Browning and the Bengals early, establishing a 14-0 lead through one, and the veteran backup was never able to get his side of the ball fully on track. Browning ultimately took three sacks and tossed a pair of picks in Minnesota territory, the first a pick-six in the first quarter. Browning has demonstrated the ability to play appreciably better than he demonstrated Sunday in a game that got out of hand due largely to turnovers, but atoning for the poor performance in Week 4 could be a heavy lift with a road trip to Denver for a Monday night, Sept. 29 date with the Broncos on tap.
Sep 15, 2025
Looks set for significant run
Browning appears set to take over as Cincinnati's starting quarterback for several weeks, with Joe Burrow (toe) slated to undergo surgery and expected to be facing a three month recovery timetable, ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Browning played admirably in relief of Burrow during Sunday's 31-27 win over the Jaguars, completing 21 of 32 pass attempts for 241 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions and rushed in for a game-winning one-yard touchdown on his only carry. The presence of standout WR duo Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins will assist Browning's efforts to produce while stepping up as Cincinnati's starter under center, beginning Week 3 against the Vikings, who may be without J.J. McCarthy (ankle). The Bengals currently have Brett Rypien on the practice squad but figure to add additional quarterback depth in the near future, so while Browning may face additional competition soon, he now becomes a priority add in fantasy formats that allow multiple signal-callers to be started.
Sep 14, 2025
Mixed results in comeback win
Browning replaced an injured Joe Burrow (toe) in Sunday's comeback win over the Jaguars. He completed 21 passes on 32 attempts for 241 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for the game-winning touchdown. He also threw three interceptions.
ANALYSIS
Brownings interceptions were pretty rough, especially on the latter two throws. The Bengals will need him to tighten it up going forward as the schedule appears to be tougher. Burrow has torn toe ligaments and could be out several weeks, so the burden falls to Browning in the near term.
Feb 15, 2025
Works only in mop-up duty in 2024
Browning didn't throw a pass over three regular-season games in 2024. He rushed twice for minus-2 yards.
ANALYSIS
A season-ending injury to Joe Burrow in Week 11 of 2023 gave Browning an opportunity for substantial playing time, but Burrow remained healthy throughout 2024, and Browning consequently spent almost the entire campaign on the bench. Browning signed a two-year contract with Cincinnati last April, so he's slated to work as Burrow's backup again next season.
Sep 4, 2024
Not on injury report
Browning (ribs) was absent from the Bengals' injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Browning suffered a rib injury in the Bengals' preseason opener against the Buccaneers, which caused him to miss the final two exhibition games. Now healthy, he'll be available to serve as Cincinnati's backup behind Joe Burrow for the regular-season opener against New England on Sunday.
Aug 17, 2024
Out with rib injury
Browning (ribs) won't play in Saturday's preseason game against Chicago, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Browning played in the preseason opener but threw for only 52 yards on 18 pass attempts, and he then missed practice this week with a rib injury sustained during the game. Coach Zac Taylor said he expects the QB to "miss some time" but didn't go into further detail.
Aug 13, 2024
Nursing rib injury
Browning did not participate at practice Tuesday due to a rib injury he sustained during Saturday's preseason game versus the Buccaneers, Ben Baby of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The exact severity of the issue is unclear, but Coach Zac Taylor said Tuesday that Browning would "miss some time." In his stead, Logan Woodside may see more opportunities to impress during drills.
Aug 13, 2024
Struggles in preseason opener
Browning and the Bengals' second-team offense struggled in the preseason opener against the Bucs. He ended up completing 10 passes on 18 attempts for only 52 yards and an interception.
ANALYSIS
Browning helmed seven drives against the Bucs, with only one lasting more than three plays, and that one ended in a missed field goal. It's only one preseason game, but Browning did not build off of last season's better-than-expected performance.
Apr 23, 2024
Signs through 2025
Browning signed a two-year contract with the Bengals on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Undrafted back in 2019, the QB spent two years on Minnesota's practice squad and then two seasons on Cincinnati's. Browning finally got his shot in 2023, winning the No. 2 QB job for the Bengals and eventually replacing an injured Joe Burrow (wrist) for the final seven and a half games of the season. Browning played surprisingly well down the stretch, with 15 total TDs (three rushing) and seven turnovers (all INTs) while leading all qualified passers in completion percentage (70.4) and ranking fifth in yards per attempt (8.0). The 28-year-old's status as an exclusive-rights free agent this offseason essentially locked him into staying with the Bengals, and the two-year deal now sets him up to be a restricted free agent after 2025. His solid performance in 2023 --combined with 2-3 more years of team contract control -- could make Browning a trade target for QB-needy teams, though there haven't been rumblings of interest this spring.
Feb 28, 2024
Tendered by Cincinnati
The Bengals tendered exclusive rights free agent Browning on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Undrafted out of Washington in 2019, Browning made the first nine appearances of his NFL career last season, starting seven games following Joe Burrow's season-ending injury. Browning had the Bengals in playoff contention right up until the end of the season, finishing the year with a league-best 70.4 percent completion rate for 1,936 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions, adding 27-127-3 as a rusher. He's the favorite to open 2024 as Burrow's top backup.
Jan 7, 2024
Throws three TDs in Week 18 win
Browning completed 18 of 24 passes for 156 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 31-14 win over the Browns. He added 18 yards on two rushing attempts.
ANALYSIS
Browning was picked off on Cincinnati's first possession but led touchdown drives on the next three. That stretch included a six-yard touchdown pass to Joe Mixon and a three-yard touchdown pass to Andrei Iosivas, as well as a Mixon rushing touchdown. Browning added a seven-yard touchdown pass to Iosivas in the third quarter. After Joe Burrow suffered a season-ending wrist injury in Week 11, Browning threw for 1,936 yards with a 12:7 TD:INT and three rushing touchdowns in seven starts and one relief appearance. Browning's strong finish is likely to earn the 27-year-old quarterback at least a backup role next season, be it in Cincinnati or elsewhere.
Jan 1, 2024
Held in check in Week 17 loss
Browning completed 19 of 33 passes for 197 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions in Sunday's 25-17 loss to the Chiefs. He added seven rushes for 32 yards and an additional score.
ANALYSIS
Browning got the Bengals' offense off to a hot start, as the team recorded 17 points through their first three possessions. In that span, he threw a seven-yard touchdown to Joe Mixon and also bowled through several defenders on a one-yard rush into the end zone. However, the team failed to score again and Browning's stat line suffered. He's played admirably in relief of Joe Burrow (wrist) since Week 11, though he could be in a tough spot in a Week 18 matchup against the Browns with both Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins currently playing at less than 100 percent.
Dec 23, 2023
Three interceptions in Week 16 loss
Browning completed 28 of 42 passes for 335 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in Saturday's 34-11 loss to the Steelers. He also threw a two-point conversion and rushed once for no gain.
ANALYSIS
Browning had a few key errors that contributed to Cincinnati's 24-0 halftime deficit. He threw a ball up for grabs for an interception in Pittsburgh's end zone in the first quarter, then tossed another interception in the second quarter before adding an incompletion on fourth-and-1 from Pittsburgh's five-yard line just before the two-minute warning in the first half. Browning connected with Tee Higgins for an 80-yard touchdown on his first pass of the second half and followed it up with a two-point conversion to Joe Mixon, but he proceeded to throw another interception and another incomplete pass on fourth down as the Bengals failed to cut further into the deficit. Despite his numerous turnovers, Browning exceeded 300 passing yards for the third time in the last four games. He'll look to bounce back in Week 17 against the Chiefs.
Dec 16, 2023
Big second half in 324-yard effort
Browning completed 29 of 42 pass attempts for 324 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against Minnesota on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Browning mostly struggled in the first half, though he narrowly missed two big throws -- one to Charlie Jones and one to Tee Higgins -- and he would have had a much bigger game yet if either of those targets had landed. Browning would go on to hit Higgins for two touchdown strikes in the second half, which is an encouraging sign given that Browning had otherwise shown hints of growing dependent on YAC yardage from his running backs and tight ends. The problem is that Ja'Marr Chase left the game with a shoulder injury, and it's not clear if he'll be available as Browning and the Bengals head to Pittsburgh in Week 16.
Dec 10, 2023
Another stellar performance Sunday
Browning completed 18 of 24 passes for 275 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and added three rushes for seven yards and another score in the Bengals' 34-14 win over the Colts on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Browning went a long way toward proving his breakout Monday night Week 13 performance against the Jaguars was no fluke, displaying outstanding efficiency while averaging an impressive 11.5 yards per attempt. Rookie running back Chase Brown lent Browning a big early hand by taking a short pass 54 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, and the fourth-year signal-caller connected with Tanner Hudson for an 11-yard scoring strike in the third quarter, a play Browning followed up with a one-yard touchdown run later in the period. Browning did exit the game early in the fourth quarter with muscle cramping for what amounted to five scrimmage plays, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, but he was able to return to finish the game without issue. With two stellar performances now under his belt, Browning next sets his sights on the Vikings in a Week 15 home matchup.
Dec 5, 2023
Elite numbers in primetime upset
Browning completed 32 of 37 passes for 354 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the Bengals' 34-31 overtime win over the Jaguars on Monday night. He also rushed twice for 22 yards and another score and brought in his only target for minus-7 yards.
ANALYSIS
Browning was near perfect in a performance no one could have seen coming, with the fourth-year pro averaging 9.6 yards per attempt and connecting with eight different targets on the night. Browning's one touchdown pass, a 76-yard pass to Ja'Marr Chase down the left sideline early in the third quarter, broke a 14-14 tie at the tie, and the emerging signal-caller added a one-yard rushing touchdown early in the final period before eventually calmly leading a game-winning 12-play drive in overtime. Browning has completed a jaw-dropping 81.0 percent of his passes over his first two starts while compiling three total touchdowns and only one interception in those contests, affording him an avalanche of momentum heading into Week 14 home matchup against the Colts.
Nov 26, 2023
Mediocre in first career start
Browning completed 19 of 26 passes for 227 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 16-10 loss to the Steelers. He added three rushes for nine yards.
ANALYSIS
Browning drew his first career start due to the absence of Joe Burrow (wrist) and kept the Bengals in the game for a tough divisional matchup. His lone touchdown came early in the second quarter on an 11-yard pass to Drew Sample. While Browning certainly won't move the Cincinnati offense in a comparable way to Burrow, he did show enough competence that Cincinnati should remain competitive, which is good news for the likes of Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins (hamstring).
Nov 17, 2023
Starter with Burrow out for year
Browning will be Cincinnati's starting quarterback moving forward, as Joe Burrow (wrist) will miss the rest of the season, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Burrow went for an MRI on Friday after leaving Thursday's 34-20 loss to the Ravens in the first half. The MRI revealed a torn ligament in the star quarterback's wrist. Browning came into Thursday's game with just one career regular-season NFL pass attempt, and he went on to complete eight of 14 passes for 68 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while rushing four times for 40 yards after replacing the injured Burrow. The 27-year-old Browning is expected to make his first NFL start in Week 12 against the Steelers.
Nov 17, 2023
Serviceable in emergency duty
Browning entered the Bengals' 34-20 loss to the Ravens on Thursday night with 2:02 remaining in the second quarter for an injured Joe Burrow (wrist) and completed eight of 14 passes for 68 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while rushing four times for 40 yards.
ANALYSIS
Browning was able to lead the Bengals on a 10-play, 67-yard drive that culminated in a field goal to open the second half, but the next three Cincinnati possessions netted minus-2 yards on nine plays. Browning was subsequently able to lead an eight-play, 75-yard match in garbage time that he capped off with a two-yard touchdown toss to Ja'Marr Chase with 1:08 remaining, and he could be in line to fill in for Burrow in a Week 12 home divisional clash versus the Steelers on Sunday, Nov. 26 if the star signal-caller's wrist injury proves serious enough to sideline him for at least one game.
Aug 29, 2023
Gets No. 2 QB job
Browning is the Bengals' second-string quarterback following the release of Trevor Siemian on Tuesday, Jay Morrison of PFN reports.
ANALYSIS
Siemian's release confirms that Browning won the summer battle to back up Joe Burrow, who remains uncertain for Week 1 after suffering a calf injury in late July. The Bengals may still take a look at other options for the backup role, especially if they aren't confident in Burrow making it back for Week 1 at Cleveland. The 27-year-old Browning has spent time with Minnesota and Cincinnati since going undrafted back in 2019, but he's still seeking his first regular-season appearance after years of mostly working on practice squads.
Aug 26, 2023
Makes bid for No. 2 QB spot
Browning completed each of his six passes for 42 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 21-19 preseason loss to the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
Browning got the start and led the Bengals to seven points on two drives before turning things over to Trevor Siemian, who produced six points on five drives. One of the two will be named the No. 2 QB to start the season, with the role taking on added importance in light of Joe Burrow's continued recovery from a calf injury suffered in late July.
Aug 14, 2023
Unlikely to start Friday
Browning is expected to play the entire second half of Friday's preseason game against Atlanta, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Browning started the Bengals' preseason opener against the Packers and played the entire first half, while Trevor Siemian handled the second half. The two quarterbacks are expected to reverse roles for Cincinnati's second exhibition as they continue to compete for the top backup spot behind Joe Burrow, who is currently sidelined with a calf injury but will likely be available for the regular season.
Aug 11, 2023
Expected to start Friday
Browning is in line to start Friday's preseason game against the Packers, Bridget Condon of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With top QB Joe Burrow nursing a calf injury, Condon notes that Browning and Trevor Siemian are slated to see QB reps for the Bengals on Friday, while it's also possible that Reid Sinnett could factor in.
Jan 31, 2023
Sticks with Cincinnati
The Bengals signed Browning to a reserve/future contract Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Browning spent the entire 2022 campaign on the Bengals' practice squad and was elevated three times but is still looking to make his NFL debut. However, he's earned a future contract with Cincinnati for a second straight year and will get to stick around the organization during the offseason. If the Bengals don't re-sign Brandon Allen, Browning could be the early favorite to win the top backup spot behind Joe Burrow to start the 2023 season.
Jan 30, 2023
Back to practice squad
Browning reverted to the Bengals' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Browning was elevated for the final two weeks of the regular season and AFC Championship Game, but he simply operated as an emergency backup option behind Brandon Allen and Joe Burrow. The fourth-year quarterback originally joined the league as an undrafted free agent out of Washington and is still looking to make his NFL debut.
Jan 28, 2023
Shifts to active roster
Browning was elevated to the active roster Saturday, Andrew Gillis of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
The fourth-year quarterback has yet to make his NFL debut, and it's hard to imagine he'd change that as the de facto No. 3 option behind both Joe Burrow and Brandon Allen come Sunday's AFC conference championship contest.
Jan 9, 2023
Shifts back to practice squad
Browning reverted to the Bengals' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Browning was elevated from the practice squad for the second week in a row to cap off the 2022 regular season. However, he still has yet to make his NFL debut, as the fourth-year quarterback was ultimately ruled inactive prior to Sunday's win over the Ravens. While it's unclear if he'll be brought up again, Browning should continue to serve as the Bengals' de facto No. 3 quarterback behind Joe Burrow and Brandon Allen during the team's upcoming playoff appearance against Baltimore on Sunday.
Jan 7, 2023
Jumps up to active roster
Browning was elevated from the Bengals' practice squad Saturday.
ANALYSIS
It's possible Browning could see time in the second half depending on how other games go throughout the early afternoon, but with the Bengals still poised for a possible top-two seed in the AFC, it's hard to imagine the No. 3 quarterback seeing much playing time.
Jan 2, 2023
Bumped up from practice squad
Browning was elevated from the practice squad to active roster Monday.
ANALYSIS
Browning could suit up for Monday's game against the Bills, although he'll likely operate the team's No. 3 quarterback if he does, behind starter Joe Burrow and Brandon Allen. Browning was active for multiple games last season, but the Washington product has yet to take an NFL regular-season snap.
Aug 31, 2022
Winds up on Bengals practice squad
The Bengals signed Browning to their practice squad Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Browning was waived Tuesday but went through waivers unclaimed, allowing the Bengals to add him to their practice squad. The 26-year-old quarterback likely won't be elevated to the 53-man roster unless Joe Burrow (appendix) gets hurt, though the Bengals don't have a backup on the roster at the moment after cutting both Browning and Brandon Allen.
Aug 30, 2022
Waived by Cincinnati
The Bengals waived Browning on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With Joe Burrow (appendix) sidelined, Browning spilt quarterback duties with Brandon Allen during the preseason, but as expected, Allen beat Browning out for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Browning's release suggests that Burrow should be 100 percent by Week 1, and it's also possible that the Bengals opt to sign Browning to their practice squad if he clears waivers.
Aug 12, 2022
Sees extended action Friday
Browning completed 13 of 24 passes for 190 yards and gained 14 rushing yards on four carries in Friday's preseason game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Brandon Allen got the start for Cincinnati but was knocked out of the game with a concussion after just one series, leaving Browning to run the offense well into the fourth quarter. The 26-year-old held his own, although he didn't lead the Bengals on a scoring drive until late. An undrafted free agent out of Washington in 2019, Browning has yet to attempt a pass in the NFL, but if Allen winds up being sidelined into the regular season, the former could find himself in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Joe Burrow (appendix) for Week 1.
Aug 10, 2022
Will operate as backup Friday
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said Browning will operate as the backup to Brandon Allen during Friday's preseason contest against Arizona, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor said that Allen is projected to play the entire first half, while Browning will get the nod in the second. This doesn't come as a surprise as these two have been operating in these roles throughout the start of training camp with Joe Burrow sidelined following an appendectomy.
Feb 15, 2022
Signs futures deal
Browning signed a reserve/future deal with the Bengals on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Browning joined the Bengals this offseason after spending his first two seasons in the NFL on the Vikings' practice squad. He was elevated to the active roster twice during the 2021 campaign, but he's yet to make his NFL debut.
Jan 10, 2022
Back to practice squad
Browning reverted to Cincinnati's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Browing was elevated to the Bengals' active roster ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Browns, but he failed to sniff the field. He's yet to make his NFL debut.
Jan 8, 2022
Elevated from practice squad
The Bengals elevated Browning to the active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Browning was also elevated ahead of Week 17 but was inactive against Kansas City. However, he should serve as the No. 2 quarterback behind Brandon Allen on Sunday since Joe Burrow (knee/rest) will be held out.
Jan 3, 2022
Sent back to practice squad
Browning reverted to the Bengals' practice squad Monday.
ANALYSIS
Browning was put on the active roster ahead of Week 17 in case Brandon Allen wasn't able to return from the COVID list. The Washington product will have to keep waiting for an opportunity to make his NFL debut.
Jan 2, 2022
Inactive against Kansas City
Browning (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Chiefs, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Browning was elevated from the Bengals' practice squad to the active roster Saturday. However, that was likely insurance for Brandon Allen (illness), who was also activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday. Browning has not been active for a game this season.
Jan 1, 2022
Moves to active roster
Browning was elevated to the active roster Saturday, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a little curious the Bengals will have three quarterbacks active for Sunday's tilt against the Chiefs, but with no negative news regarding the status of starter Joe Burrow, don't expect Browning or No. 2 QB Brandon Allen to see much time on the field.
Sep 7, 2021
Joins Cincinnati's practice squad
The Bengals signed Browning to their practice squad Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Browning spent the last two seasons on the Vikings' practice squad, but he was never promoted to the active squad. The ex-Husky threw 94 touchdowns across four collegiate seasons.
Aug 31, 2021
Cut by Vikings
Browning was waived by the Vikings on Tuesday, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Browning had a strong showing early in training camp, but he struggled in all three preseason contests. The Vikings will attempt to bring him back via the practice squad if he passes through waivers unclaimed.
Aug 28, 2021
Struggles again in preseason finale
Browning was just 2-of-8 passing for 41 yards in Saturday's preseason loss at Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Browning had drawn praise in camp, but he struggled in all three preseason games. The Vikings may look to sign a veteran quarterback to back up Kirk Cousins with 2021 third-round pick Kellen Mond having an uneven preseason.
Aug 22, 2021
Continued lackluster peformance
Browning was 8-of-15 passing for 82 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Saturday's preseason loss to the Colts. Browning and Kellen Mond's lackluster performance led head coach Mike Zimmer to leave open the possibility of the team signing a veteran backup to Kirk Cousins, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Browning had drawn praise in camp, but he struggled in the first preseason game (including an ugly pick-six interception) and then followed with a lackluster effort. Kellen Mond also struggled, so the Vikings may not feel secure about their backup options to Kirk Cousins.
Aug 15, 2021
Struggles in preseason debut
Browning went 5-for-10 for 31 yards and an interception that was returned for a touchdown in Saturday's preseason loss to Denver.
ANALYSIS
Browning had drawn praise in camp, but he struggled Saturday by making a poor throw on a pick-six and struggling with his accuracy. It looked like he had a shot to overtake Kellen Mond for the backup quarterback job, but this outing likely sets him back significantly in the competition.
Jul 31, 2021
Opportunity for more reps
Browning will receive all the reps at quarterback with Kirk Cousins (undisclosed), Kellen Mond (illness) and Nate Stanley sidelined due to the COVID-19 protocols, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Mond tested positive for the virus, while Cousins and Stanley are sidelined until they clear the protocols as apparent close contacts, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Browning, a 2019 UDFA, faces long odds to make the season-opening roster, but he'll have an opportunity to showcase himself with the other quarterbacks out of the picture for the immediate future.
Jan 4, 2021
Receives future deal
The Vikings signed Browning to a reserve/future contract Monday, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
An undrafted rookie in 2019, Browning has spent the last two seasons on the Vikings' practice squad. The 24-year-old quarterback will compete to be Kirk Cousins' backup in 2021.
Sep 8, 2020
Makes practice squad
The Vikings signed Browning to the practice squad Tuesday, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Minnesota waived Browning amid roster cuts over the weekend, and he'll now begin a second straight season on the team's practice squad. Fellow quarterback Nate Stanley will be around to provide competition.
Sep 5, 2020
Shifts to waivers
Browning was waived by the Vikings on Saturday, Craig Peters and Eric Smith of the Vikings' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Browning couldn't beat out Sean Mannion to be Kirk Cousins' backup, so he could spend a second straight season on the Vikings' practice squad assuming he clears waivers.
Jan 12, 2020
Signs reserve/future deal
Browning signed a reserve/future contract with the Vikings on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
This move will give Minnesota the inside track on retaining Browning next season in a practice squad role. The 23-year-old quarterback will try to make the team out of camp next season.
