Returns to practice squad
Patterson reverted to the Chargers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was elevated to the active roster for the third week in a row, officially logging a one-yard carry while playing four snaps offense, but he did have another carry negated by a holding call. The running back operated as the No. 2 option behind Kimani Vidal, but Vidal far outpaced him with 68 offensive snaps. Patterson has now exhausted all of his elevations and the team will have to sign him to the active roster in order for him to play again this season.
Nov 8, 2025
Elevated for Week 10
The Chargers elevated Patterson from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Patterson will be elevated to the Chargers' active roster for a third consecutive week, and he is expected to serve as the primary backup to Kimani Vidal on Sunday. Patterson has turned 20 carries into 74 yards in two regular-season games, though Vidal will be the top pass-catching back as the former has not recorded a target this season.
Nov 3, 2025
Moves back to practice squad
The Chargers reverted Patterson to their practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was elevated for Sunday's Week 9 win over Tennessee and worked as Los Angeles' No. 2 running back (behind Kimani Vidal), logging 18 of 65 offensive snaps. Patterson ended up out-producing Vidal despite the relatively small snap share, tallying 44 yards on nine carries (to Vidal's 30 yards on 12 rushes). Patterson's presence became a necessity with all of Omarion Hampton (ankle), Hassan Haskins (hamstring) and Najee Harris (Achilles) on IR. Vidal is currently the only healthy running back on the Chargers' 53-man roster, so it would be surprising if Patterson isn't elevated again (or signed to the roster) ahead of Sunday's Week 10 matchup against Pittsburgh.
Nov 3, 2025
Excels in complementary role Sunday
Patterson carried nine times for 44 yards in Sunday's 27-20 win over the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Kimani Vidal (12 carries for 30 yards, no receptions on one target) drew the start and led the backfield with a 72 percent snap share, but Patterson outproduced him on the ground, despite playing just 18 of the Chargers' 65 offensive snaps (28 percent). The Chargers are still likely to prioritize Vidal as their top passing-down back, but the delineation of the workload on the ground between the two players could become more even moving forward in light of Patterson's strong showing in Week 9. Patterson will revert to the Chargers' practice squad Monday, but he's a strong bet to be elevated or signed to the 53-man roster in advance of next Sunday's game against the Steelers.
Nov 1, 2025
Elevated for second straight week
Patterson was elevated from the Chargers' practice squad to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Patterson will be elevated to the active roster for the second straight week as the Chargers have an injury-riddled running back room. He had 11 rushing attempts in a blowout win over the Vikings in Week 8 and could be the primary change-of-pace back to Kimani Vidal.
Oct 24, 2025
Back to practice squad
Patterson reverted to the Chargers' practice squad Friday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was signed to the Chargers' practice squad Oct. 14 and joined fellow running back Nyheim Hines as gameday elevations for Thursday's game against the Vikings due to Hassan Haskins (hamstring) being inactive. Patterson ended up playing 15 snaps on offense and turned 11 carries into 30 yards, with six of those carries coming in the fourth quarter with the Chargers holding a commanding lead. Hines has already been elevated by the Chargers from the practice squad for the maximum three times, so Patterson would be a candidate to be promoted to the active roster for Week 9 against the Titans on Sunday, Nov. 2.
Oct 23, 2025
Elevated for banged-up Chargers
Patterson was elevated from the practice squad ahead of Thursday's game against the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Patterson and Nyheim Hines have both been elevated, giving the Chargers a pair of healthy alternatives to Kimani Vidal, who is the only available option currently on the 53-man roster. Patterson has rushed 85 times for 344 yards and two touchdowns in 21 regular-season NFL games. He played for Washington in 2021 and 2022 before appearing in one game with the Chargers in 2024.
Oct 14, 2025
Signs with Los Angeles
The Chargers signed Patterson to the practice squad Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Los Angeles now has three running backs on the practice squad, as Patterson joins Nyheim Hines and Amar Johnson behind Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins on the 53-man roster. Patterson profiles as an early-down, between-the-tackles ball carrier and could get a look on the game day roster after Haskins has amassed just 27 scoreless yards on 11 carries this season.
Aug 26, 2025
Let go with injury settlement
The Chargers waived Patterson (undisclosed) with an injury settlement Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The nature and severity of Patterson's injury isn't clear, but the settlement will allow him to sign with a team once he is fully healthy. The only preseason action he saw was the Hall of Fame Game against the Lions on July 31, when he turned three carries into two yards while adding two catches on as many targets for 18 yards.
Jan 13, 2025
Staying with Bolts
Patterson signed a reserve/future contract with the Chargers on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was unsuccessful in making the Chargers' 53-man roster at the end of training camp, but he signed with their practice squad Sept. 2. He was elevated for the Chargers' wild-card game against the Texans on Saturday, but ended up being inactive for the contest. The 25-year-old running back will stay with the Bolts during OTAs, minicamp and training camp in an effort to earn a spot on the 53-man roster for the 2025 campaign.
Jan 11, 2025
Inactive for wild-card contest
Patterson (coach's decision) is inactive for Saturday's wild-card game versus Houston.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was elevated from the practice squad Friday, but he isn't going to suit up. J.K. Dobbins (ankle) entered Saturday deemed questionable to take the field, but he's been cleared to play, as has Gus Edwards, who dealt with an ankle injury of his own during practice this week. Hassan Haskins will join Dobbins and Edwards in the Chargers' backfield, while Kimani Vidal joins Patterson as a healthy inactive.
Jan 10, 2025
Joins active roster
The Chargers elevated Patterson to their active roster Friday.
ANALYSIS
The Buffalo product has spent most of his 2024 campaign with the Chargers' practice squad after failing to make the active roster in late August. Patterson has appeared in one game for the Chargers this season, recording no stats while playing just one special-teams snap. His elevation ensures depth at running back for Saturday's wild-card matchup against the Texans, with J.K. Dobbins (ankle) listed as questionable.
Dec 9, 2024
Lands back on practice squad
The Chargers reverted Patterson to their practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Patterson got his first elevation of the campaign for Sunday's matchup against the Chiefs and played one snap on special teams. That was his first regular-season action since he suited up in three contests for the Commanders in 2022. With J.K. Dobbins on IR for at least two more games, Patterson could get additional elevations, though it's unlikely he'll see much action on offense.
Dec 7, 2024
Elevated by Bolts for Week 14
The Chargers elevated Patterson from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Patterson signed with the Chargers' practice squad in early September after failing to make the 53-man roster at the end of training camp. It's his first elevation of the 2024 campaign, though he'll likely be restricted to a special teams role as the Chargers already have Gus Edwards, Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins in the backfield. Patterson last saw NFL regular-season action in 2022 with the Commanders, and across three games he turned 17 carries into 78 yards.
Sep 2, 2024
Joins Chargers' practice squad
Patterson signed with the Chargers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was let go by the Bolts in late August after failing to make the team's initial 53-man roster, but he's now found a spot on the practice squad. The 24-year-old running back's last regular-season action came in 2022 with the Commanders, when he appeared in three games and recorded 78 rushing yards on 17 attempts.
Aug 29, 2024
Waived by Bolts
The Chargers waived Patterson on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Patterson made the Chargers' initial 53-man roster, but he was subsequently cut after the team claimed fellow RB Hassan Haskins on waivers. Also in the Los Angeles backfield mix ahead of Week 1 are Gus Edwards, J.K. Dobbins and rookie Kimani Vidal.
Aug 18, 2024
First RB with touch Saturday
Patterson had four carries for 10 yards while catching all five of his targets for 28 yards in Saturday's 13-9 preseason loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was the first back deployed by the Chargers sans J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards while the projected starting duo continue to sit until the regular season. Rookie Kimani Vidal (11-49-0) had a strong showing Saturday as both young backs continue to battle for spots and roles behind the aforementioned veteran transplants from Baltimore. Expect Patterson to see more work in the Chargers' final preseason tilt against the Cowboys next Saturday.
Aug 14, 2024
Pushing for RB3 job
Patterson is believed to be the leading candidate for the Chargers' RB3 job, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Popper, Patterson has gotten the most reps with the first-team offense behind J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, notably running ahead of Isaiah Spiller and Elijah Dotson. Patterson was also the first running back into the Chargers' first preseason game, finishing with seven carries for 38 yards. Patterson spent most of the 2023 season on Los Angeles' practice squad before a short stint back in Washington. Patterson has 85 career carries for 344 yards and two touchdowns.
Aug 10, 2024
Tallies 42 yards in preseason loss
Patterson carried the ball seven times for 38 yards and also caught one of his two targets for four yards in Saturday's 16-3 preseason loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Patterson started the game at running back with Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins both healthy inactives and continued to see time until early in the third quarter. Los Angeles' offense as a whole struggled to move the ball, especially in the first 30 minutes of the game, as Patterson's long of 16 yards came near the end of the first half with Seattle playing a prevent defense of sorts, content to let the Chargers effectively run out the clock. Neither Elijah Dotson (three carries, seven yards) or Isaiah Spiller (five carries, five yards) did much with their limited opportunities on the ground and it's also worth noting intriguing rookie Kimani Vidal also was held out of the exhibition, which appeared to be a coach's decision.
Jul 26, 2024
Taking some first-team reps
Patterson got a lot of first-team snaps during practice Thursday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With Gus Edward (undisclosed) limited to individual drills and sixth-round pick Kimani Vidal working with the backups, J.K. Dobbins and Patterson seem to be getting most of the first-team RB snaps early in training camp. Patterson nonetheless seems more likely to find himself on the roster bubble than competing for a significant Week 1 role, considering he went undrafted back in 2021 and didn't make a regular-season appearance last year. He spent most of 2022 on the Commanders' practice squad and most of 2023 on the Chargers' practice squad.
Jan 10, 2024
Joins Chargers
The Chargers signed Patterson to a reserve/future deal Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Patterson wasn't able to make his way onto the field this season, but he'll now get a chance to compete for a spot on the Chargers' 53-man roster for 2024. He probably lacks the size to ever take on a workhorse role.
Dec 26, 2023
Latches on with Washington
Patterson signed with the Commanders' practice squad Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The Commanders are dealing with injuries throughout their backfield, as Brian Robinson (hamstring), Chris Rodriguez (ankle) and Jonathan Williams (concussion) are all banged up. Patterson played in 20 games for Washington across the 2021-2022 seasons rushing 85 times for 344 yards and two touchdowns.
Dec 20, 2023
Loses his spot
Patterson was cut from the Chargers' practice squad Wednesday, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Patterson has been on the team's practice squad since Sept. 13, but he never received an elevation to the active roster. The 23-year-old will work to find a new opportunity before the 2023 campaign comes to a close.
Sep 13, 2023
Gets new opportunity
Patterson signed with the Chargers' practice squad Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Patterson spent camp with the Commanders, as well as the previous two seasons, but was unable to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. He'll now be an emergency option for Los Angeles, while he tries to earn a permanent spot on their active roster.
Aug 28, 2023
Let go by Washington
The Commanders are slated to release Patterson, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Patterson made a case for a spot on Washington's final roster when he turned eight carries into 51 yards in the team's preseason finale, but he nonetheless will now need to search for an opportunity elsewhere. However, Patterson could have earned himself a call back via the practice squad.
Aug 26, 2023
Makes final case for spo
Patterson took eight carries for 51 yards in Saturday's 21-19 preseason loss to the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was the third back into the game, after Chris Rodriguez and Jonathan Williams, on a night that saw both Antonio Gibson and Brian Robinson rested. Patterson thus appears unlikely to have a spot on the Week 1 roster, perhaps sticking around via the practice squad instead.
Jan 8, 2023
Leading rusher against Dallas
Patterson carried the ball 17 times for 78 yards and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 26-6 win over the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Brian Robinson (knee) was inactive for the Commanders' season finale, so Patterson found himself as the primary option in the team's backfield after not getting a touch through the first 17 weeks, and he used the opportunity to establish a new career high in rushing yards for the game. Robinson's strong second half all but ensures he'll be the team's top RB in 2023, but if Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) gets moved in the offseason, Patterson could enter next season in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, giving the 2021 undrafted free agent some possible deep-league fantasy intrigue.
Jan 6, 2023
One of two healthy RBs
Patterson is one of two healthy running backs on Washington's roster ahead of Sunday's matchup with Dallas, Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
The other is journeyman Jonathan Williams, who was the No. 3 back behind Brian Robinson (knee) and Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) for most of December. With Gibson missing the final two games of the season and Robinson out for the last game, Patterson has been called up from the practice squad the past two weeks for the first time since mid-November. The 2021 UDFA thus figures to get his first touches since Week 17 of last season when he replaced an injured Gibson and tallied 98 total yards (plus a touchdown) as the starting running back. The Commanders also have Reggie Bonnafon as an option at RB after signing him to the practice squad Thursday.
Jan 5, 2023
Bumps up to 53-man roster
The Commanders signed Patterson from the practice squad to their active roster Thursday, Zach Selby of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
With fellow running backs Antonio Gibson (knee) and J.D. McKissic (neck) both on injured reserve, along with Brian Robinson currently listed as questionable due to a knee issue, Patterson could find himself working in a backfield committee alongside Jonathan Williams this weekend versus Dallas, given Robinson is eventually sidelined. The 23-year-old has seen game action on two separate occasions this campaign but has yet to register an offensive rep.
Jan 3, 2023
Returns to practice squad
Patterson reverted to the Commanders' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Patterson received the elevation for Sunday's loss to the Browns with Antonio Gibson (knee) inactive. The 23-year-old never the saw the field on offense, but he did handle return duties, totaling 70 yards on three opportunities. Whether or not he receives an opportunity to play Week 18 against the Cowboys will likely depend on whether Gibson plays or not.
Dec 31, 2022
Joins active roster
Patterson was elevated from the Commanders' practice squad Saturday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
It'll be interesting to see if Patterson gets any work as a returner given he's replacing the injured Antonio Gibson (knee). Either way, the second-year undrafted running back should see some snaps in general as the third option behind Brian Robinson and Jonathan Williams.
Dec 30, 2022
Likely to be elevated Week 17
Patterson is expected to be elevated to the active roster with Commanders' No. 2 running back Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) ruled out for Sunday's game against the Browns, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was previously bumped up from the practice squad for the Commanders' Week 4 win over the Eagles. However, the second-year running ultimately played just four special-teams snaps in this contest, so he'll likely slot into a similar role behind Brian Robinson and Jonathan Williams.
Nov 15, 2022
Heads back to practice squad
Patterson reverted back to the Commanders' practice squad Tuesday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Patterson made his first NFL appearance in 2022 in Week 10 against the Eagles, but he ultimately played just four special-teams snaps in the contest. The 22-year-old will now transition back to Washington's practice squad as an emergency running back depth option, though he could receive another promotion to the team's 53-man roster if either J.D. McKissic (neck) or Jonathan Williams (knee) are unable to gain medical clearance in time for Sunday's game in Houston.
Nov 14, 2022
Elevated for MNF
Patterson was elevated from Washington's practice squad ahead of Monday's game against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Patterson will provide backfield depth behind Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson with J.D. McKissic (neck) unavailable. He rushed for 266 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie season with Washington but has spent the entirety of the 2022 campaign on the practice squad up to this point.
Aug 31, 2022
Back with Washington
The Commanders signed Patterson to their practice squad Wednesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Patterson had a solid preseason, rushing 16 times for 63 yards while catching five passes for 47 yards, but he failed to make the initial 53-man roster. With Brian Robinson (lower body) out for the foreseeable future, it's possible Patterson sees an elevation as early as Week 1.
Aug 30, 2022
Waived by Commanders
Patterson was waived by the Commanders on Tuesday, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Patterson had a strong preseason, rushing for 63 yards and a score on 16 carries while also catching five passes for 47 yards over three games. In the end though, he failed to make the Commanders' final roster and could end up on a new squad. With Brian Robinson (lower body) out for the foreseeable future, it's possible that Patterson returns to the Commanders' practice squad and gets elevated at some point early in the season.
Aug 28, 2022
Stars in preseason finale
Patterson took 11 carries for 47 yards and four catches for 45 yards in Saturday's 17-15 preseason loss to Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was busy throughout the night, especially in the first half, while Antonio Gibson, Brian Robinson, J.D. McKissic (groin) and Jonathan Williams all were held out. The 2021 UDFA may end up on the practice squad, but he's shown vision and balance to offset his lack of size and speed, potentially making him a decent depth back in the NFL. There's not much hope for Week 1 touches even if he makes the team.
Jul 5, 2022
Part of crowded backfield
Patterson enters his second NFL season as part of a crowded Washington backfield that includes starter Antonio Gibson, passing-down specialist J.D. McKissic and rookie third-round pick Brian Robinson, Bijan Todd of NBC Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Injuries could create more room, but the current look puts Patterson on the roster bubble, perhaps competing with Jonathan Williams and Reggie Bonnafon for one spot. Patterson did make one start last year after catching on as an undrafted rookie, and his respectable showing in that outing (98 total yards and a TD) could work in his favor this summer. Still, he's only worth a look in the deepest of fantasy leagues.
Jan 9, 2022
Returns to backup role
Patterson rushed six times for 21 yards and brought in both targets for 14 yards in Washington's 22-7 win over the Giants on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Patterson was back in a complementary role with Antonio Gibson available Sunday, a week after posting 98 total yards against the Eagles. The rookie showed some promise in limited action in 2021 by rushing for 266 yards and adding another 73 through the air on 11 receptions, and he appears set to compete for a potentially larger role behind Gibson in training camp this summer.
Jan 2, 2022
Totals 98 yards
Patterson rushed the ball 12 times for 57 yards in Sunday's 20-16 loss to Philadelphia. He added five receptions for 41 yards.
ANALYSIS
Patterson dominated work out of Washington's backfield in the absence of Antonio Gibson (hip/undisclosed). He accounted for 12 of Washington's 22 rushing attempts, though no other back recorded more than four carries. Patterson also made the most of his opportunity, averaging 4.8 yards per attempt while also opening the scoring in the contest with an 11-yard dash to the end zone early in the first quarter. While that was positive enough, Patterson also also finished second on the team in receptions and third in receiving yards. Assuming Gibson returns for a Week 18 matchup against the Giants, Patterson will likely be relegated back to a peripheral role in the offense.
Dec 31, 2021
Poised to start
Patterson is expected to pick up his first career start Sunday against the Eagles after lead back Antonio Gibson (hip) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday upon testing positive for the virus, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibson's status for Week 17 was already murky after he downgraded from limited participation in practice Wednesday to no activity Thursday on account of the hip issue, and his placement on the reserve/COVID-19 list makes it even more likely that he'll miss his first game. Since Gibson is vaccinated, he'll theoretically have a chance to test out of the NFL's COVID-19 protocol before Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff, but that should be viewed as a long shot. Gibson's expected absences leaves Patterson as the next man up out of the Washington backfield on the heels of his nine-carry, 33-yard outing in last week's 56-14 loss to the Cowboys. The blowout nature of the contest likely played a factor in Patterson taking on a greater role in the game plan in the second half, but even if Washington is able to keep things more competitive this week, the undrafted rookie out of Buffalo should have a good chance of getting double-digit touches. Jonathan Williams is also expected to pick up some work on the ground and may steal
Dec 27, 2021
Gets nine carries
Patterson took nine carries for 33 yards in Sunday's 56-14 loss to Dallas, playing 25 percent of snaps on offense.
ANALYSIS
The rookie got five of his nine carries in the fourth quarter, though both he and Jonathan Williams subbed in for Antonio Gibson at times before the game got completely out of hand. Gibson is playing through a toe injury and may not be at his best, but he still managed 58 total yards and a TD on only 37 percent of snaps. Any limitations over the final two weeks would set up Patterson and Williams for larger roles.
Dec 24, 2021
Larger role could await
Patterson may be headed for a larger role in Washington's game plan Sunday in Dallas with lead back Antonio Gibson (toe) listed as questionable after not practicing in any capacity this week, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Matthew Paras of The Washington Times, head coach Ron Rivera said Friday that Gibson is dealing with an injury similar to the case of turf toe that sidelined the running back for two games in 2020. While Rivera noted that Gibson feels better this time around compared to last season, Standig also relayed that the coach "wasn't oozing with optimism" about the 23-year-old's chances of playing. Even if Gibson suits up Sunday, Washington could still look to lighten his workload to some degree, given that the Football Team is playing on a short week and along with the fact that he's coming off a 21-touch outing against the Eagles. Patterson has logged eight carries for 49 yards and a touchdown over the past two games, with his healthy 6.1 yards-per-carry average potentially setting him up for more work in the next few weeks even if Gibson was in better health.
Dec 22, 2021
Reaches end zone against Eagles
Patterson rushed four times for 20 yards and a touchdown in Tuesday's 27-17 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Patterson has now topped 20 yards in three of the last five games, and he's rushed 17 times for 74 yards and a touchdown while hauling in his lone target for nine yards across that span. J.D. McKissic (concussion) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, so Patterson should continue to see a slight uptick in work behind lead back Antonio Gibson.
Dec 14, 2021
Five touches in loss
Patterson ran four times for 29 yards and caught his only target for nine yards during Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
With J.D. McKissic (concussion) sidelined once again, Patterson and Jonathan Williams operated as the primary backups to Antonio Gibson. Patterson and Williams both garnered four rushing attempts, and while the former was able to outgain the ladder 29-16, Williams was able to add a touchdown to his ledger -- the only rushing score of the day for Washington. The two backups appear to be splitting the work behind Gibson, but neither running back will likely carry much fantasy potential heading into Sunday's showdown with the Eagles, even if McKissic is out for a third consecutive game.
Dec 6, 2021
No extra work sans McKissic
Patterson took one carry for two yards in Sunday's 17-15 win over Las Vegas, playing four snaps on offense.
ANALYSIS
Patterson and Wendell Smallwood (five snaps, three touches) barely played behind Antonio Gibson, whose 82 percent snap share was easily a season high. It doesn't appear Patterson will get extra touches even if J.D. McKissic (concussion) misses more time, as the undrafted rookie has merely been used as Gibson's sub for early downs so far.
Nov 24, 2021
Quiet in limited role
Patterson carried the ball seven times for 23 yards in Sunday's 27-21 win over the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Patterson played on just 13 of Washington's 67 offensive snaps, operating as the No. 3 running back behind both Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic. With both Gibson and McKissic healthy, the rookie will likely continue to see minimal work and limited snaps going forward. Washington will host Seattle in Week 12, and Patterson should remain off the fantasy radar.
Nov 15, 2021
Gets four more carries
Patterson took four carries for seven yards in a 29-19 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The undrafted rookie played five snaps (7 percent) and took one carry in each of the game's four quarters. It was a smaller workload than what Patterson got directly before the Week 9 bye, but that was in a a 17-10 loss to Denver where Antonio Gibson's shin injury flared up. While it could still be an issue again, Gibson managed 24 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's upset win, with no report of a setback along the way. That likely limits Patterson to a handful of touches, or perhaps even less, in Week 11 against the Panthers.
Oct 31, 2021
Leads team in rushing Sunday
Patterson carried the ball 11 times for 46 yards and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 17-10 loss to the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
His numbers were modest, but the rookie led Washington in rushing yards and saw exactly as many touches as both Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic. Patterson's role figures to shrink again coming out of a Week 9 bye if Gibson, who has been playing through a shin injury, is back to 100 percent.
Oct 18, 2021
Takes two touches
Patterson took one carry for five yards and caught his lone target for a loss of two yards in Sunday's 31-13 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Patterson got three touches Week 4 and four more Week 5, but it was J.D. McKissic who picked up the slack Sunday with Antonio Gibson bothered by his shin at times. McKissic finished with eight carries for 45 yards and a team-high eight catches for 65 yards, while Gibson managed 10 carries for 44 yards and two catches for no gain. Patterson was a distant third, per usual, but he could split work with McKissic in Week 7 (at Green Bay) if Gibson is absent or limited.
Sep 20, 2021
Strictly playing special teams
Patterson played 12 snaps on special teams in Thursday's 30-29 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The undrafted rookie out of Buffalo has four snaps on offense and 20 on special teams through the first two games of his pro career, operating as the No. 3 back in Washington behind Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic. Any hope for a large role this season likely involves an injury to one of those two, but it is possible Washington could give Patterson a few more carries throughout the year if he continues to impress in practice. For the time being, he'll focus on special teams, continuing Week 3 at Buffalo.
Aug 31, 2021
Makes the team
Patterson appears to have a spot on Washington's initial 53-man roster, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The undrafted rookie out of Buffalo is one of three running backs left on the roster after Peyton Barber was released Tuesday morning, though it is possible Washington re-signs Barber after cutdown day (and thus avoids guaranteeing his salary). Even if Barber is brought back, the willingness to risk losing him suggests Washington is comfortable with Patterson in the No. 3 role. The rookie wouldn't match Barber's contributions as a blocker or coverage man on special teams, but Patterson could get some touches on kick returns and would also offer a more explosive element if Washington ever needed to replace an injured Antonio Gibson or J.D. McKissic.
Aug 21, 2021
Excels again
Patterson had 16 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown and three catches for 25 yards in Friday's 17-13 preseason win over Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
The undrafted rookie out of Buffalo is making his case to unseat Peyton Barber as the No. 3 running back, adding another strong performance Friday after taking 10 carries for a team-high 40 yards and four catches for a team-high 30 yards in the preseason opener. Even if Barber sticks around for special teams and/or short-yardage work, Patterson might convince Washington to keep four running backs on the Week 1 roster. And, if nothing else, he'll have a shot to be signed by another team should Washington try to sneak him on to the practice squad.

Gets 14 touches in NFL debut
Patterson took 10 carries for 40 yards and caught three of four targets for 30 yards in Thursday's 22-13 preseason loss to New England.
ANALYSIS
The undrafted rookie out of Buffalo is competing with Lamar Miller, Peyton Barber and Jonathan Williams for one or two spots at RB behind roster locks Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic. And while Barber and Miller scored Washington's touchdowns Thursday night, Patterson was the only back on the team with more than 35 total yards. In terms of playing time, Gibson and McKissic handled the first quarter, followed by Barber early in the second quarter and then a busy drive for Patterson right before halftime (capped off by Barber's one-yard TD). Patterson continued dominating carries in the third quarter, before turning things over to Jonathan Williams and Lamar Miller for most of the final frame. In other words, Barber and Patterson are leading the competition for RB depth spots. They'll continue the battle at training camp next week, leading up to an Aug. 20 (Friday) preseason game against Cincinnati.
