Status for 2025 in limbo
Texans general manager Nick Caserio suggested Tuesday that Mixon's (foot/ankle) availability for the 2025 season hasn't yet been determined, but Houston expects to have more clarity on that front in the next three or four weeks, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Caserio's comments during his press conference mark the first time that a member of the Houston brass has addressed Mixon's status since the start of the regular season. The veteran running back was placed on the non-football injury list ahead of training camp after getting hurt during an individual workout in the spring, and the Texans have been non-committal on a timeline for his return ever since. Given that the Texans aren't yet hinting that Mixon will even resume practicing in the near future, the 29-year-old doesn't look like he's on track to be an option in the Houston backfield until late in the season, if at all. The Texans are likely to continue to lean on a timeshare of Nick Chubb and rookie Woody Marks at running back for the foreseeable future.

Not ready to return
Mixon (foot) is not ready to be activated off the reserve/non-football injury list this week, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Week 5 is the first time that Mixon can be activated, but his status will remain the same. Head coach DeMeco Ryans was asked twice during Monday's session with reporters and declined to answer those queries directly, per Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle. While no official in the organization is saying anything definitive, it doesn't appear Mixon is close to returning. In the meantime, Woody Marks, fresh off a breakout performance in Week 4, and Nick Chubb will continue to share the bulk of the backfield work.

Not close to returning
Coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday that Mixon (foot) is not close to a return to the field, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon is on the reserve/non-football injury list and is eligible to begin practicing this week, but Ryans suggested that's not going to happen anytime soon. Ryans even admitted he doesn't know if Mixon will play this season. Woody Marks had a breakout Week 4 performance against the Titans in Week 4 and appears poised to take more control of the backfield alongside Nick Chubb moving forward.

GM noncommittal on return in 2025
Texans general manager Nick Caserio declined to answer in the affirmative when asked Wednesday whether Mixon (foot/ankle) will suit up this season, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon is officially out the first four games of the year after having been placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, but when prompted for more clarity about a timetable his potential return to the field Wednesday all Caserio said was that the team will "take it one day at a time," and that players on IR or the NFI lists will be evaluated "after four weeks and see where they are in their progression and then make a determination." Mixon has been sidelined throughout spring activities, training camp and the preseason, leaving Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce, Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale as Houston's top backfield options to open the regular season.
Aug 26, 2025
Officially out for first four games
The Texans placed Mixon (foot/ankle) on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, ruling him out for the first four games of the season.
ANALYSIS
The move has been expected for at least a few days, with Mixon far way from a return and seemingly uncertain to play even later this season. Nick Chubb is the favorite to start in Mixon's place Week 1 against the Rams, although Dameon Pierce, Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale are also in the mix for roles.
Aug 25, 2025
Will miss at least four games
Mixon (foot/ankle) is slated to begin the season on reserve/non-football injury list.
ANALYSIS
Mixon, who currently is on the active/non-football injury list due to foot and ankle issues, officially will land on reserve/NFI on Tuesday afternoon, a move that will result in the running back missing at least the first four games of the regular season. In Mixon's looming absence, Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale and Woody Marks are the team's top available backfield options ahead of Week 1.
Aug 15, 2025
No lock for Week 1
Mixon (foot/ankle) isn't a lock to be ready for the Texans' Week 1 road matchup with the Rams on Sunday, Sept. 7, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon missed the offseason program and then kicked off training camp on the active/non-football injury list due to foot and ankle issues, the former of which is the primary reason for his continued absence, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. In his debut campaign with Houston in 2024, Mixon racked up 281 touches for 1,325 yards from scrimmage and 12 total touchdowns in 14 regular-season games, marking the fifth 1,000-yard rushing season and third with double-digit TDs of his eight-year career. As long as Mixon is sidelined, veterans Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale and rookie fourth-rounder Woody Marks will be the options out of the Texans backfield.
Jul 26, 2025
Set to miss extended time
Mixon (foot/ankle) is expected to face an extended absence and will be re-evaluated closer to the beginning of the season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon is currently on the active/non-football injury list due to an ankle injury, but Rapaport added that it's a foot injury that will cause him to miss serious time. It's unclear if these two injuries are related. Regardless, this could be a significant loss for the Texans, as Mixon posted the fifth 1,000-yard rushing season of his career through 14 regular-season games last year. Nick Chubb will likely take a significant portion of the first-team reps moving forward while rookie Woody Marks rotates in because Dameon Pierce (undisclosed) is on the PUP list. Mixon could still get healthy by Week 1, but he will be re-evaluated closer to the beginning of the season to determine a timetable for his return.
Jul 23, 2025
Placed on NFI list
The Texans placed Mixon (ankle) on the non-football injury list for the start of training camp, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon suffered multiple ankle injuries last season, including one that cost him Weeks 3-5, but the current issue is something that popped up during his individual offseason training -- thus the 'non-football injury' designation. He missed spring practices, with reports at the time suggesting he'd likely be ready for training camp. Recent updates suggest the Texans still aren't overly concerned and plan to ease Mixon into training camp, with his absence in the meantime potentially freeing up first-team reps for Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce, Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale.
Jul 22, 2025
Progressing well with ankle issue
Mixon, who is progressing well in his recovery from an ankle injury, is likely to be eased back into the mix in training camp, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Wilson, Mixon sported a walking boot at one point this spring after getting hurt during individual offseason training, but since then the running back has regained his mobility while ramping up his workouts this summer. Though Mixon could be limited to a degree early on in training camp, when 100 percent healthy he's in line to maintain his status as the top option in a Houston backfield that also includes Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce, Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale.
Jul 9, 2025
On track for training camp
Mixon, who has been dealing with what Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston describes as foot-ankle issues, is expected to be ready for training camp, which opens July 23.
ANALYSIS
Wilson noted that there's not cause for concern in terms of the training camp/regular season status of the Texans' top running back, who missed time this offseason, but has made strides since then. Once Mixon returns to the practice field, he'll reclaim his role atop a backfield depth chart that also includes Nick Chubb, who the team signed to a one-year contract last month, as well as Dameon Pierce, 2025 fourth-rounder Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale. In 14 regular-season games with Houston in 2024, Mixon carried 245 times for 1,016 yards and 11 TDs to go along with a 36/309/1 receiving line. Looking ahead, the 28-year-old appears poised to maintain steady usage in 2025, with the presence of Chubb -- health permitting -- providing Mixon with a viable veteran complement to spell his workload.
May 30, 2025
Missing OTAs with minor injury
Mixon (lower body) is not participating in voluntary team activities Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon has sported a walking boot recently due to an injury Wilson's sources describe as minor, though head coach DeMeco Ryans has yet to comment on the starting running back's status. All expectations remain that Mixon will be a full-go for the start of training camp late July, if not mandatory minicamp in June. Mixon's inaugural season with Houston saw him dominate backfield reps, compiling 245 carries for 1,016 yards (4.1 YPC) and eight scores across 14 regular-season appearances, plus 36 grabs for 309 yards (on 52 targets) and another score. While Mixon faded in terms of efficiency down the stretch of the regular season, he managed a surge during the Texans' two playoff contests, combining for 43 carries for 194 yards and two scores. Mixon remains secure in a workhorse role entering his age-29 season, with Dameon Pierce and Woody Marks compete for No. 2 reps.
Jan 18, 2025
Hits century mark in playoff exit
Mixon carried the ball 18 times for 88 yards and a touchdown and caught two of three targets for 12 yards in Saturday's 23-14 divisional-round loss to Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
The running back broke free for a 13-yard TD scamper in the third quarter that should have tied the game at 13-13, but Ka'imi Fairbairn missed the extra point. Mixon reached the century mark in scrimmage yards and got into the end zone in both of Houston's playoff games this season, an emphatic end to his first campaign with the Texans that saw him churn out 1,325 combined yards and 12 total TDs over 14 regular-season contests. Mixon has two years and $15 million left on the contract he signed in March 2024, and there's little reason to think the team will be looking to get out from under the deal this offseason.
Jan 18, 2025
Suiting up for divisional round
Mixon (ankle) is listed as active for Saturday's divisional-round game at Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
The Texans tacked on Mixon to their injury report Wednesday as limited due to an ankle injury, which kept him off the practice field entirely Thursday. Despite receiving a questionable tag for the second round of the playoffs, he'll be available to Houston's backfield Saturday, but he also may yield some snaps and touches to backups Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale. In 15 appearances, including last Saturday's win against the Chargers, this season, Mixon has averaged 20.5 touches for 96.3 yards from scrimmage per game while scoring 13 total TDs.
Jan 17, 2025
Solid chance to Chiefs
Mixon (ankle), who is officially listed as questionable for Saturday's divisional-round contest against the Chiefs, has a "very very real chance to play," Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Rapoport, the ankle injury that cause Mixon to practice in a limited fashion Wednesday and miss Thursday's session isn't particularly serious, and he can be considered on track to play Saturday barring any unforeseen setbacks. Official word on the status of the Texans' top backfield option will be revealed no later than 90 minutes prior to Saturday's 4:30 p.m. ET kickoff. Houston has backups Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale on hand in the event that Mixon is limited or unavailable due to his ankle issue.
Jan 16, 2025
Questionable for Saturday
Mixon (ankle) is listed as questionable for Saturday's divisional-round game against the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
After being added to the Texans' injury report Wednesday following a limited practice, Mixon was deemed a non-participant Thursday. The starting running back's status is thus worth monitoring closely as Saturday's 4:30 ET kickoff approaches, but if Mixon is limited or out versus Kansas City, Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale would be in line to see added backfield work for Houston.
Jan 15, 2025
Added to injury report
Mixon (ankle) was limited at practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Mixon wasn't listed on Houston's injury report Tuesday, so his addition to it a day later makes his status worth monitoring ahead of Saturday's divisional-round game against the Chiefs. Thursday's final injury report is thus in line to reveal whether the starting running back carries an injury designation into the weekend or is fully cleared to face Kansas City.
Jan 11, 2025
Wears down Chargers
Mixon rushed the ball 25 times for 106 yards and one touchdown while also losing a fumble in Saturday's 32-12 win over the Chargers. He added one reception on two targets for 13 yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon had only six carries for 15 yards at halftime, but he got things going after losing a fumble early in the third quarter. He went on to record long gains of 15, 12 and 17 yards -- the last of which went for a touchdown to seal the victory late in the final quarter. The performance marked Mixon's second time topping 100 yards on the ground in the postseason across eight games.
Jan 5, 2025
Limited to one possession
Mixon rushed the ball five times for 23 yards in Sunday's 23-14 win over the Titans. He added one reception on one target for five yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon played one offensive possession with the rest of the Texans' starting unit and then gave way to Dameon Pierce as the team was locked into the fourth seed in the AFC. His five carries were enough for him to top 1,000 yards on the ground for the second consecutive campaign. While he's been held to fewer than 60 rushing yards in six of his last eight games, Mixon will play a key role in the Houston offense in a playoff matchup against either the Steelers or Chargers.
Dec 25, 2024
Struggles on ground continue
Mixon took nine carries for 26 yards and brought in two of three targets for 13 yards in Wednesday's 31-2 loss to Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Mixon's late-season struggles continued with another mediocre rushing line that featured no trips to the end zone. The former Bengal is averaging a meager 35.3 rushing yards in three games since the Texans' Week 14 bye. The 27-year-old currently sits just seven yards shy of recording the fifth 1,000-yard rushing season of his career. Mixon should easily accomplish that feat in a favorable matchup against Tennessee in Week 18.
Dec 21, 2024
Late-season fade continues
Mixon rushed 14 times for 57 yards and caught one of two targets for 14 yards in Saturday's 27-19 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Kansas City came into Saturday's game having allowed the fewest rushing yards in the NFL to running backs, so Mixon's modest stat line isn't particularly surprising. This game continued an alarming trend, as Mixon has posted 71 total yards or fewer without a touchdown in three of his last four games. Prior to this downturn, he had at least 90 scrimmage yards and a touchdown in seven of eight appearances. Getting back on track won't be easy for the workhorse running back on Christmas against Baltimore's stout run defense.
Dec 19, 2024
Cleared for Saturday's game
Mixon (ankle) doesn't have an injury designation for Saturday's game at Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
The Texans listed Mixon as a limited practice participant Tuesday through Thursday, following his brief exit from a 20-12 win over Miami on Sunday. He returned to the game and finished with 17 touches for 56 yards, playing 64 percent of snaps on offense after four straight games at 75 percent or higher. Mixon will face a tough defense Saturday and comes with slightly more workload/injury risk than usual, but he nonetheless profiles as a strong fantasy starter, averaging 107.9 total yards and 1.1 TDs in 11 games this year.
Dec 18, 2024
Logs limited practice Wednesday
Mixon (ankle) was limited at practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Mixon, who was also deemed limited Tuesday, suffered a minor ankle injury this past Sunday against the Dolphins, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, but the running back indicated Wednesday that he plans to play Saturday against the Chiefs. Thursday's injury report will clarify whether or not Mixon heads into the weekend with an injury designation, but at this stage it appears that he'll be available for Week 16 action, barring a setback.
Dec 17, 2024
Checks out fine Monday
Mixon suffered a minor ankle injury during Sunday's 20-12 win over the Dolphins but Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said the running back checked out fine upon being evaluated Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
The injury occurred during the second quarter, but Mixon was able to finish the game, although his 32 snaps were the fewest since he returned from an earlier ankle injury Week 6. The Texans feel Miami's Jordyn Brooks should have been flagged for an illegal hip-drop tackle, which is similar to the one that resulted in Mixon getting injured in Week 2 against the Bears. Officials did not flag the defender for a penalty on either play; however, Chicago's T.J. Edwards was fined for the tackle under a new NFL rule outlawing a tackling technique that has caused a high frequency of injuries. Mixon's status should be monitored during the preparation week leading into Saturday's game at Kansas City.
Dec 15, 2024
Held in check during win
Mixon rushed 12 times for 23 yards and brought in five of six targets for 33 yards in the Texans' 20-12 win over the Dolphins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was held to his second-lowest rushing yardage total of the season -- both which have come in the last three games -- but was at least partly able to make up for the downturn with solid output in the passing game. Mixon appeared to get shaken up on a first-half play but never missed any time, and he was able to tie a season high in receptions with his work as a receiver. Mixon next takes aim at the Chiefs' solid defense in a Week 16 Saturday afternoon road battle.
Dec 1, 2024
Compiles 119 total yards in win
Mixon rushed 20 times for 101 yards and a touchdown and brought in four of six targets for 18 yards in the Texans' 23-20 win over the Jaguars on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mixon managed to get over the 100-yard mark on the ground for the seventh time this season on his final carry of the day coming out of the two-minute warning, an eight-yard run that fittingly sealed the hard-fought win for Houston. The veteran back managed his 11th rushing touchdown of the campaign on a seven-yard run just before the halfway point of the third quarter, and he tied for his second-highest reception total of the season as well. Mixon will head into a Week 14 bye just 113 rushing yards short of his fifth career 1,000-yard campaign, a milestone he'll look to hit at the expense of the Dolphins in a Week 15 home matchup on Sunday, Dec. 15.
Nov 24, 2024
Shut down by Tennessee
Mixon rushed the ball 14 times for 22 yards in Sunday's loss to the Titans. He added five receptions on six targets for 23 yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was coming off a dominant performance Monday against the Cowboys, though he struggled to get going in Sunday's loss. His longest gain went for just eight yards and 11 of his 14 carries went for two yards or fewer. Mixon managed to salvage his performance in PPR formats with a season-best five receptions, though it was still his lowest yardage total of the season.
Nov 18, 2024
Bounces back with three-TD night
Mixon rushed 20 times for 109 yards and three touchdowns and secured two of four targets for 44 yards in the Texans' 34-10 win over the Cowboys on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
A week after being bottled up by a talented Lions defense, Mixon was right back to dominating the opposition with a stellar effort on the ground. Mixon struck early, rattling off a 45-yard touchdown run to cap off the opening drive of the game and subsequently recording a one-yard scoring rush late in the first quarter. The prolific back would replicate the latter feat with 3:16 remaining to close out the scoring on the night, recording a new single-game-high TD total in the process. Mixon also curiously posted his second straight two-catch, 44-yard showing through the air, affording him plenty of momentum ahead of a Week 12 home date with the division-rival Titans.
Nov 11, 2024
Bottled up after early TD
Mixon rushed the ball 25 times for 46 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 26-23 loss to the Lions. He added two receptions on four targets for 44 yards.
ANALYSIS
The Lions have boasted one of the better run defenses for much of the season, and the unit largely limited Mixon on the ground Sunday. The exception came on Houston's first offensive possession, which he capped with an eight-yard touchdown run. Mixon's notable production otherwise came as a pass catcher, when he ripped off a 36-yard catch and run late in the first quarter. While he was bottled up thereafter, Mixon has found the end zone in all but one game this season and has been among the most reliable producers at the position.
Nov 1, 2024
Another touchdown in loss
Mixon rushed 24 times for 106 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' 21-13 loss to the Jets on Thursday night. He also threw an incomplete pass on his only attempt.
ANALYSIS
The Texans' passing game struggled throughout most of the night, with C.J. Stroud taking eight sacks and 11 hits overall. However, Mixon continued to produce to his typically high standard, recording his fourth consecutive 100-yard tally and his fifth rushing touchdown (sixth overall) in the last four games on a three-yard run late in the second quarter. The veteran back did go without a target for the first time all season, but Mixon boasts as reliable a floor at his position as there is in the league heading into a Week 10 Sunday night showdown against the Lions on Nov. 10.
Oct 27, 2024
Another robust workload Sunday
Mixon rushed 25 times for 102 yards and a touchdown and secured four of six targets for 32 yards in the Texans' 23-20 win over the Colts on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Another week, another true workhorse role for Mixon, who once again made good use of his opportunities by eclipsing the 100-yard mark for the third straight game and fourth time overall on the season. Mixon also extended his streak of games with at least one rushing touchdown to three via a 14-yard run early in the second quarter, and all three components of his receiving line were season highs as well. Mixon continues to profile as an elite fantasy asset at his position heading into a Week 9 road Halloween showdown against the Jets on Thursday night.
Oct 20, 2024
Scores twice in narrow defeat
Mixon rushed 25 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns while catching two of three targets for nine yards in Sunday's 24-22 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Mixon carried Houston's offense while C.J. Stroud threw for only 86 yards. The veteran running back ran in touchdowns of two and four yards in the second quarter, with the second score capping a drive that also featured a 32-yard Mixon burst on the ground. Mixon has been terrific when healthy, and he'll have a nice opportunity to keep rolling in Week 8 against a Colts defense that he ravaged for 159 rushing yards and a touchdown in the season opener.
Oct 18, 2024
Cleared to face Packers
Mixon (ankle) doesn't carry an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was limited at practice Wednesday and Thursday before being deemed a full participant Friday, which paves the way for him to continue to lead Houston's backfield this weekend. In the running back's return from a three-game absence in last week's 41-21 win over the Patriots, Mixon carried 13 times for 102 yards and a touchdown while adding two catches for 30 yards and another score on three targets. Now that he's further removed from the ankle injury that previously sidelined him, it's plausible that Mixon could see more touches in Week 7, with Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale available to handle complementary work versus Green Bay.
Oct 17, 2024
Still limited at practice
Mixon (ankle) remainedlimited at practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Mixon logged 13 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown while adding two catches for 30 yards and another score on three targets in his return from a three-game absence in this past Sunday's 41-21 win over the Patriots. Given that there's been no reported setbacks with his ankle since then, the running back's Week 7 status doesn't appear to be in danger, but Mixon will probably need to practice fully Friday in order to approach this weekend's game against the Packers without an injury designation.
Oct 16, 2024
Logs limited practice
Mixon (ankle) was limited at practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
In his return from a three-game absence in this past Sunday's 41-21 win over the Patriots, Mixon carried 13 times for 102 yards and a touchdown while adding two catches for 30 yards and a receiving score on three targets. With no reported setbacks in that contest, there's a solid chance that the running back's listed limitations Wednesday are maintenance-related rather than representative of a setback with his ankle.
Oct 13, 2024
Scores twice in return from injury
Mixon (ankle) rushed 13 times for 102 yards and a touchdown while adding two catches for 30 yards and a touchdown on three targets in Sunday's 41-21 win over the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Mixon got two carries from inside the 5-yard line on the opening drive but showed some rust in his return from a three-game absence, combining for minus-1 yard on those two attempts. He made no mistake with another red-zone opportunity on the next drive, scoring a 10-yard receiving touchdown to give the Texans a 14-0 lead. Mixon later broke off a 59-yard run in the second quarter and put the game away with a 20-yard touchdown run in the fourth. In the two games he has played from start to finish this season, Mixon has produced a sensational 310 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns. His ankle injury seems to be firmly in the rearview mirror heading into a Week 7 road game against the Packers.
Oct 13, 2024
Active versus Patriots
Mixon (ankle) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
After logging back-to-back limited practices Thursday and Friday, Mixon -- who is bouncing back from what Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston previously described as a less severe high-ankle sprain -- was listed as questionable for the contest. With his return from a three-game absence confirmed, Mixon should have an opportunity to reclaim his lead role in Houston's backfield versus New England, but if he's limited at all or suffers any in-game setbacks, Dameon Pierce (who is also in the mix after missing four games), as well as Dare Ogunbowale and Cam Akers are available to contribute to the Texans' Week 6 rushing game.
Oct 12, 2024
In line to return Sunday
Mixon (ankle) is expected to suit up for Sunday's Week 6 matchup against New England, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
This report follows others at the end of the week that suggested Mixon has been trending toward suiting up Sunday. The veteran running back hasn't played since Week 2, when he suffered an ankle sprain against the Bears. Backfield mate Dameon Pierce (hamstring) has also been cleared to play Sunday following a four-game absence, so Cam Akers -- who had been getting a healthy workload while Mixon was out -- will likely slide back to a limited role.
Oct 12, 2024
Still trending toward playing
Mixon (ankle), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Patriots, is still on track to play, Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston echoed this same sentiment Friday, but it's good to see that the star running back hasn't suffered any setbacks in his pursuit of making a return after a multi-game absence. Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale would likely operate in a reserve capacity once it's officially confirmed Mixon will be set to play Sunday.
Oct 11, 2024
Trending toward return
Mixon (ankle), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Patriots, is expected to be available for the contest barring any setbacks, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Back-to-back limited sessions have Mixon trending in the right direction ahead of Sunday's game. Meanwhile, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle suggests that trainers could make a final determination on Mixon's status at the team's walk-through Saturday before the team travels to New England. If Mixon is available and not overly limited versus New England he'd have a chance to reclaim his lead role in a Houston backfield that also includes Dameon Pierce (who doesn't carry an injury designation), Dare Ogunbowale and Cam Akers.
Oct 11, 2024
Status in question for Sunday
Mixon (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game in New England.
ANALYSIS
Mixon cobbled together back-to-back limited practices to cap Week 6 prep, potentially setting himself up for his first game action since Week 2, when he initially sprained his right ankle. Fellow RB Dameon Pierce (hamstring) has been cleared ahead of Sunday's contest after logging full sessions Thursday and Friday, so he may be the leading candidate for RB reps if both he and Mixon are active this weekend. Mixon's status will be confirmed about 90 minutes before a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
Oct 10, 2024
Limited in return to practice
Mixon (ankle) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's his first practice since Friday of Week 4, with Mixon perhaps making a push to play for the first time since Week 2. Fellow running back Dameon Pierce (hamstring) was a full practice participant Thursday and could take the lead role this Sunday at New England if Mixon isn't quite ready. Mixon said Thursday that he isn't sure about his Week 6 availability and will need to see how things go during Friday's practice, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Oct 10, 2024
Spotted at practice
Mixon (ankle) was present for practice Thursday, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After not practicing last week, Mixon also was a 'DNP' on Wednesday, but his presence at Thursday's session offers hope that the running back could potentially be available Sunday against the Patriots. The Texans' upcoming injury report will reveal the official participation level of both Mixon and Dameon Pierce (hamstring), who was limited Wednesday.
Oct 9, 2024
Not practicing
Mixon (ankle) isn't practicing Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon hasn't played since Week 2 and has managed just one limited practice since then (Friday of Week 4), with coach DeMeco Ryans saying Monday that he isn't sure if the running back will return for Sunday's game at New England. Dameon Pierce (hamstring) returned to practice at the end of last week, potentially giving Houston a new candidate to lead the backfield after Cam Akers and Dare Ogunbowale got most of the work in the past three games.
Oct 7, 2024
Return date still to be determined
Coach DeMeco Ryans relayed Monday that the Texans "don't know" whether Mixon (ankle) will be able to return for Sunday's game at New England, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. "For Joe and his injury, we will still evaluate that week to week," Ryans said. "He is definitely been improving week to week."
ANALYSIS
Mixon injured his right ankle Week 2 against the Bears on Sunday, Sept. 15, and he's managed just one limited practice (Friday, Sept. 27) since then, missing Houston's last three games as a result. Fellow RB Dameon Pierce (hamstring) has been sidelined since Week 1, so Cam Akers and Dare Ogunbowale have shouldered most of the load out of the team's backfield in the interim, with J.J. Taylor (nine touches) and even British Brooks (one carry) also getting some snaps. The Texans will resume practicing Wednesday, at which point it'll be known if Mixon was able to mix into any drills.

Ruled out for Sunday
Mixon (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was unable to practice this week and will target a potential return to action Sunday, Oct. 13 against the Patriots. Meanwhile, fellow RB Dameon Pierce (hamstring) is listed as questionable, so it's possible that he'll bolster a Houston backfield Week 5 that's been led by Cam Akers and Dare Ogunbowale of late.
Oct 4, 2024
Not expected to play Week 5
Mixon (ankle) is not expected to suit up for Sunday's game against the Bills, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network repots.
ANALYSIS
Mixon hasn't yet participated in practice for Houston this week, and it sounds like he's trending toward sitting out Friday's session and Sunday's game. That would make his next chance to play Week 6 on the road against New England. If Mixon can't go Sunday it will constitute his third straight absence, though Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports that head coach continues to label the veteran running back "day-to-day." With Dameon Pierce (hamstring) also not yet practicing, Cam Akers and Dare Ogunbowale appear likely to lead the Texans' backfield versus Buffalo.

Still not practicing
Mixon (ankle) remained sidelined at practice Thursday, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to fellow RB Dameon Pierce (hamstring), according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. The duo's continued absence from practice sets the stage for Friday's session to loom large with regard to their chances of playing Sunday against the Bills. For his part, coach DeMeco Ryans has maintained that Mixon is 'day-to-day' ahead of Week 5 action, per Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle. For now, Houston's top healthy backfield option is Cam Akers, who has started the team's last two contests.
Oct 2, 2024
Not practicing Wednesday
Mixon (ankle) isn't practicing Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon, who remained sidelined this past Sunday against the Jaguars, thus has two more chances to practice ahead of this weekend's game against the Bills. Meanwhile, fellow RB Dameon Pierce (hamstring) was spotted at Wednesday's session.
Sep 30, 2024
Labeled day-to-day
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday that Mixon (ankle) is "day-to-day," Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Ryans said the same of wideout Tank Dell (chest), who along with Mixon sat out Houston's 24-20 win over the Jaguars in Week 4. Ryans said "we'll see this week with a week of practice" whether Mixon and Dell are able to return for Sunday's pivotal matchup against the Bills. With both Mixon and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) having missed the Texans' last two games games, Cam Akers was given another chance to start versus Jacksonville, racking up 53 rushing yards on 13 carries. Wednesday's first official injury report of Week 5 stands to reveal more about the chances of Mixon and/or Pierce getting back on the field versus Buffalo.
Sep 29, 2024
Officially inactive
Mixon (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
After missing practice Wednesday and Thursday, Mixon returned to a limited session Friday before being deemed questionable heading into the weekend. With Mixon officially inactive for the second straight contest and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) also still out, Cam Akers -- who started in place of Mixon in Week 3 -- is in line to continue to see an expanded role in Houston's backfield versus Jacksonville, with Dare Ogunbowale, British Brooks and J.J. Taylor available to handle complementary backfield touches. Mixon will target a potential return to action Oct. 6 against the Bills.
Sep 29, 2024
Not slated to play Sunday
Mixon (ankle) is not in line to play Sunday against the Jaguars, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was listed as questionable for the contest, with his Week 4 status slated to be officially confirmed once the Texans' inactives are posted ahead of Sunday's 1:00 ET kickoff. In his looming absence, Cam Akers is once again slated to lead Houston's backfield.
Sep 29, 2024
Considered game-time decision
Mixon (ankle) is trending towards being a game-time decision Sunday against the Jaguars, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rapoport continued to suggest that it '...seems to be an uphill climb to play..." for Mixon, though Mixon seems determined to try to play. Teammate Dameon Pierce (hamstring) has already been ruled out, and J.J. Taylor has been elevated from the practice squad.
Sep 27, 2024
Questionable after limited practice
Mixon (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Jaguars after returning to a limited practice Friday.
ANALYSIS
Per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, Mixon looked good in his return to practice and had a solid day of work Friday. Added context regarding the running back's Week 4 status should arrive either late Saturday or early Sunday via national reporters such as Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, but fortunately for those considering Mixon in fantasy lineups the Texans kick off at 1:00 ET on Sunday. If he ends up limited or out versus Jacksonville, Cam Akers would be in line for added backfield touches since Dameon Pierce (hamstring) is slated to to miss his third straight game.
Sep 27, 2024
At practice Friday
Mixon (ankle) was present for practice Friday, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Texans' top back was sidelined both Wednesday and Thursday, as was fellow RB Dameon Pierce (hamstring), but Mixon's presence on the field Friday offers some hope that he could potentially return to action Sunday against the Jaguars. The team's upcoming injury report will reveal both Mixon's participation level as well as his Week 4 game status.
Sep 26, 2024
Still not practicing
Mixon (ankle) remained sidelined at practice Thursday, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dameon Pierce (hamstring) also remained sidelined at practice, leaving both running backs in danger of sitting out again Sunday against the Jaguars. The Texans will wait and see if Mixon is able to get back on the practice field in some fashion Friday, but if not, he'll likely be ruled out for a second consecutive game. Cam Akers would once again be in line to lead Houston's backfield in Week 4 if Mixon and Pierce are sidelined.
Sep 25, 2024
Still not practicing
Mixon (ankle) remained sidelined at practice Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Wilson, Mixon is viewed as week-to-week in his recovery from an ankle injury he suffered Week 2, a notion that doesn't bode especially well for his chances of playing Sunday against the Jaguars. Meanwhile, though fellow RB Dameon Pierce also didn't practice Wednesday, there's reportedly optimism he could potentially return to action this weekend.
Sep 25, 2024
Not seen at practice
Mixon (ankle) wasn't spotted during the initial stage of Wednesday's practice, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to fellow RB Dameon Pierce (strained hamstring), though Wilson suggested earlier Wednesday that he may be closer to a return to action than Mixon. In the duo's absence in Week 3, Cam Akers drew the start in the Texans' 34-7 loss to the Vikings, en route to carrying nine times for 21 yards and catching one of his three targets for an eight-yard TD.
Sep 21, 2024
Not playing against Minnesota
Mixon (ankle) has been downgraded to out and will not travel to Sunday's contest against the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
It's a frustrating outcome given Mixon seemed confident following Sunday's win over the Bears that he would play, but the decision isn't surprising given the star running back was initially ruled doubtful following the team's final injury report Friday. Cam Akers is set to take on the majority of the rushing opportunities with Dameon Pierce (hamstring) also out Sunday, and Dare Ogunbowale will likely be a significant factor as a pass catcher out of the backfield as well.
Sep 20, 2024
Doubtful for Sunday
Mixon is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Vikings after not practicing this week.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, top backup Dameon Pierce (hamstring) already has been ruled out for the contest. With Mixon trending toward being unavailable Sunday, Cam Akers appears poised to take on an expanded role in Week 3, a context that makes him a potential fill-in option for those who normally would rely on Mixon in fantasy lineups.
Sep 20, 2024
Still not practicing
Mixon (ankle) wasn't spotted at practice Friday, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The same applies to top backup Dameon Pierce (hamstring), which doesn't bode well for the duo's status for Sunday's game against the Vikings. If both players are unavailable this weekend, Cam Akers would be in line to see an expanded role in Week 3.
Sep 19, 2024
Not practicing Thursday
Mixon (ankle) didn't participate in practice Thursday, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle and Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston report.
ANALYSIS
The same goes for top backup Dameon Pierce (hamstring), with both players also having been 'DNP's on Wednesday. As a result the duo's status for Sunday's game against the Vikings is cloudy, and in the event that both Mixon and Pierce are unavailable this weekend, Cam Akers would be in line to step into an expanded role, according to Wilson.
Sep 18, 2024
Not seen at practice
Mixon (ankle) wasn't spotted at Wednesday's practice, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston and DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com report.
ANALYSIS
Per Wilson, Mixon is day-to-day with his ankle injury and top backup Dameon Pierce is dealing with a mild hamstring strain. The duo's status is thus worth monitoring closely as Sunday's game against the Vikings approaches. Cam Akers, Dare Ogunbowale and British Brooks are in the mix to see added work this weekend if either Mixon or Pierce are limited or out.
Sep 17, 2024
Injury not long-term issue
Mixon's ankle injury is not considered to be a long-term issue, per league sources, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was injured during Sunday's win, returned to the game, but he played just seven snaps upon his return. The running back underwent an MRI on Monday, and head coach DeMeco Ryans was noncommittal on Mixon's status for Week 3 in Minnesota. The Texans feel the tackle that injured Mixon was illegal and are submitting video of the play to the NFL for review. If Mixon's unavailable for Week 3, Cam Akers and/or Dameon Pierce (hamstring) would likely see extra workloads.
Sep 16, 2024
Set to get ankle evaluated
Head coach DeMeco Ryans said after Sunday's 19-13 win over the Bears that Mixon will have his injured ankle evaluated before the Texans determine his availability for their Week 3 game in Minnesota, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports. "Joe got rolled up. The guy's weight definitely came down on his ankle," Ryans said of Mixon, who suffered the injury early in the third quarter. "We'll evaluate Joe throughout the week. Hopefully he's OK."
ANALYSIS
Mixon picked up the injury with 11:57 in the third, when he was brought down after a reception by the Bears' T.J. Edwards, who appeared to take Mixon to the ground with the now-banned swivel hip-drop tackle. Though Mixon was able to check back into the game, he played just seven snaps the rest of the night and finished with 25 yards on nine carries plus 25 yards on three receptions. The running back took to social media after the game to criticize the NFL and NFLPA for not penalizing the hip-drop tackle, but he didn't shed any light on whether the ankle injury would jeopardize his status for Week 3. Fantasy managers should keep close tabs on Mixon's practice activity throughout the week, but if he's ruled out for next Sunday's game or is limited, Cam Akers and/or Dameon Pierce (hamstring) could take on extra carries, while Dare Ogunbowale may serve as the main replacement for Mixon on passing downs.
Sep 15, 2024
Battles through ankle injury in win
Mixon rushed nine times for 25 yards and caught three of five targets for 25 yards in Sunday's 19-13 win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Mixon missed a chunk of the second half after getting his ankle caught underneath a defender on a tackle, and while he got back into the game, he wasn't on the field for Houston's last couple drives as the Texans were trying to run out the clock. After racking up 33 touches in Week 1, Mixon was limited to just 12 against the Bears. The former Bengals running back sits firmly atop the depth chart in Houston, especially after Cam Akers lost a fumble by the goal line in the second half, but it wouldn't be surprising if Mixon's practice reps are capped heading into a Week 3 matchup with the Vikings as he deals with the aftereffects of his ankle injury.
Sep 15, 2024
Back in against Bears
Mixon (ankle) has returned to Sunday's game against the Bears, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon missed less than a quarter after hurting his ankle in the second half of Sunday night's game. He'll return to the lead role in Houston's backfield for the remainder of the game barring a setback.
Sep 15, 2024
Goes to locker room with injury
Mixon (ankle) went to the locker room in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Bears, Ben Arthur of Fox Sports reports. He is questionable to return.
ANALYSIS
Mixon injured his ankle when it got caught underneath a defender. After a brief visit to the medical tent, he made his way to the locker room for further examination. Prior to the injury, Mixon rushed seven times for 20 yards and caught three of five targets for 25 yards. Dameon Pierce (hamstring) isn't dressed against the Bears, leaving Cam Akers and Dare Ogunbowale as the two available options at running back in Mixon's absence.
Sep 8, 2024
Huge Houston debut
Mixon carries the ball 30 times for 159 yards and a touchdown and caught all three of his targets for 19 yards in Sunday's 29-27 win over the Colts.
ANALYSIS
The former Bengal put together a sensational Texans debut, highlighted by a three-yard TD plunge early in the fourth quarter. There was no question that Mixon was the bell cow for Houston -- Dameon Pierce, the top holdover in the backfield from 2023, saw only three totes. Mixon will take significant momentum into Week 2's clash with a Bears defense that gave up 94 scrimmage yards and a TD to the Titans' Tony Pollard in its season opener.
Sep 4, 2024
No physical limitations Week 1
Mixon is fully healthy heading into Sunday's regular-season opener against the Colts after being held out of preseason action due to a quadriceps injury, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon didn't have any limitations in joint practices near the end of training camp and won't have a cap on his workload in his Texans debut Week 1. The 28-year-old running back exceeded 1,000 rushing yards in four of his seven seasons with the Bengals, and Mixon is projected to lead a Houston backfield that also includes Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale, Cam Akers and British Brooks.
Aug 24, 2024
Not slated to play Saturday
Mixon is among the Texans' key players not in line to see action in Saturday's preseason finale against the Rams, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Wilson, the same applies to QB C.J. Stroud, RBs Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale, as well as WRs Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Robert Woods. Come Week 1, Mixon is slated to lead the Texans' backfield against the Colts.
Aug 21, 2024
No limitations in practice
Mixon is doing team drills Wednesday, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach DeMeco Ryans changed his mind last week after suggesting Mixon would play in Saturday's eventual preseason win over the Giants, but it seems that was just a matter of caution and not indicative of a setback or concern. Mixon returned to practice Aug. 11 after missing the first two and a half weeks of training camp with a quad injury. Meanwhile, backup running back Dameon Pierce has done nothing to alleviate concerns about his fit in a zone-blocking scheme, taking eight carries for nine yards in two preseason games.
Aug 17, 2024
Not in uniform
Mixon isn't in uniform for Saturday's preseason game against the Giants, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
It sounds like coach DeMeco Ryans had a change of heart after saying Thursday that Mixon would play. Mixon missed the first two and a half weeks of training camp with a quad injury, but he returned to practice last weekend and still has three weeks to prepare for the start of the regular season. His absence Saturday leaves Dameon Pierce as the probable starter at RB.
Aug 15, 2024
Expected to play Saturday
Coach DeMeco Ryans said Thursday that the Texans' starters, including Mixon, will play in Saturday's preseason contest against the Giants, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon is over the hamstring injury that caused him to miss the Texans' first two exhibition contests, but he returned to practice last weekend and is ready to play a few snaps. It will be Mixon's first action since he was acquired from the Bengals back in March.
Aug 11, 2024
Back at practice
Mixon (quad) was an active participant at the Texans' practice Sunday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon has been sidelined with a quadriceps injury for the last couple weeks, but he now appears to have moved past the injury. The running back was forced to miss Houston's preseason opener versus the Steelers on Friday and it's unclear if he'll make an appearance at any point prior to the team's first game of the regular season Sept. 8 against the Colts. Mixon is entering his first campaign with the Texans, all set to be their primary option out of the backfield in 2024.
Aug 9, 2024
Preseason debut on hold
Mixon (quad) is not in line to play in Friday's preseason game against the Steelers, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
On the plus side, the report notes that Mixon is close to a return to action, but the Texans have no reason to rush the running back into exhibition play, with two more preseason contests on tap after Friday. In the meantime, reserves like Dare Ogunbowale, Jawhar Jordan, Cam Akers, J.J. Taylor and British Brooks should continue to receive opportunities to state their cases for slotting behind Mixon and Dameon Pierce.
Jul 31, 2024
Making progress in recovery
Mixon (quadriceps) is making steady progress in his recovery from a minor quadriceps injury, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon has been dealing with a soft tissue injury early in training camp and he's already been ruled out for the preseason opener Thursday versus the Bears. The running back is on track to resume practicing at some point during the preseason as he ramps up his activity ahead of his first season with the Texans. Mixon figures to get the lion's share of the workload out of Houston's backfield, setting him up for another productive fantasy campaign in 2024.
Jul 30, 2024
Not playing Thursday
Mixon (hamstring) will not play in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Bears, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Even had Mixon not been dealing with a hamstring injury, it's unlikely he would have played Thursday. The Texans are expected to give Dameon Pierce and Jawhar Jordan extensive action in the backfield.
Jul 30, 2024
Not playing Thursday
Mixon (hamstring) will not play in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Bears, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Even had Mixon not been dealing with an injury, its unlikely he would have played Thursday. The Texans are expected to give Dameon Pierce and Jawhar Jordan extensive action.
Jul 29, 2024
Misses practice again
Mixon (hamstring) didn't practice Monday, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was healthy at the start of training camp but has now missed more than a week of practice, allowing Dameon Pierce to get regular work with the first-team offense. There are still questions about Pierce's fit in a zone-blocking scheme after he struggled mightily last season, potentially setting up Mixon for workloads that rival (or even surpass) what he typically handled in Cincinnati. That said, a summer hamstring injury is far from ideal, even if the Texans mostly have downplayed it to this point.
Jul 24, 2024
Experiencing hamstring issue
Mixon missed the last two practices with a tight hamstring, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
The Texans are not worried about the issue, and the decision to hold Mixon out appears to be precautionary. "Joe will be fine," Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. "Joe may miss a little time, but he'll be fine." The team signed Cam Akers to add depth to the position while Mixon is sidelined.
Jul 22, 2024
Missing practice
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday that Mixon (undisclosed) will not practice and could miss a few days but "will be fine," Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon hasn't practiced the last two days, per DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com, but it doesn't appear that he's facing a long absence. It remains undisclosed whether Mixon is dealing with an illness or injury, or whether his absence is of a personal nature, but in the meantime Dameon Pierce figures to handle the bulk of first-team reps, while Dare Ogunbowale, Jawhar Jordan and new backfield addition Cam Akers (Achilles) could also benefit from increased opportunities.
Jul 19, 2024
Anticipates heavy workload
Mixon said Friday that he's spending training camp preparing to handle a large workload, which he expects will go hand in hand with his role in the Texans' offense, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon said he's trained harder this offseason than ever before in his career, per Will Kunkel of Fox 26 Houston, and that he anticipates being near the top of the league in carries this season. While playing all 17 regular-season games for Cincinnati in 2023, Mixon ranked fifth in the league with 257 rush attempts, though his 1,034 rushing yards only ranked No. 8 and he also finished a meager 27th in YPC with a 4.0 average. Mixon did add a 52-376-3 receiving line on 64 targets and boasts a true three-down skill set, but with three star wideouts at the helm of Houston's offense, plus a capable receiving TE in Dalton Schultz, he'll likely have difficulty repeating those target numbers. Unless Mixon can manage to improve his efficiency heading into his age-28 season, he'll indeed likely need to rank close to the top five in carries to truly impress for fantasy purposes. On the plus side, he's well positioned to accomplish that in Houston, as 2022 fourth-rounder Dameon Pierce only profiles as a true backup option
Mar 14, 2024
Gets extension from Houston
Mixon has signed a three-year contract extension with the Texans, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Schefter, Mixon's reported deal with Houston -- which runs through 2026, according to Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle -- is for $27 million and includes $13 million guaranteed. The Bengals sent the 27-year-old to the Texans in exchange for a 2024 seventh-rounder, setting the stage for Mixon to take over as the lead back in his new locale, replacing Devin Singletary, who signed on with the Giants in free agency. Also in the mix for carries for Houston will be 2022 fourth-rounder Dameon Pierce, but the team's decision to extend Mixon clearly demonstrates confidence in the 2017 second-rounder, a context that should allow him to maintain steady weekly volume in 2024.
Mar 12, 2024
Headed to Houston
The Bengals are slated to trade Mixon to the Texans, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Previous reports indicated that Cincinnati intended to release Mixon, but instead the running back is in line to be dealt to Houston. The 27-year-old will thus fill the void created by the departure of Devin Singletary and is on track to lead a Texans backfield that also includes Dameon Pierce. In 17 regular season games with the Bengals in 2023, Mixon carried 257 times for 1,034 yards and nine TDs, to go along with 52 catches for 376 yards and three receiving scores.
Mar 11, 2024
Released by Bengals
Mixon was released by the Bengals on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It was suspected that Mixon could be a potential cap casualty for the Bengals, and that has turned out to be the case. He spent his first seven seasons in Cincinnati and finished the 2023 campaign with 1,410 yards and 12 touchdowns from scrimmage. The veteran back turns 28-years-old in July and will now be looking for a fresh start elsewhere.
Feb 19, 2024
Possible cap casualty
Mixon is a potential cap casualty this offseason, though it won't be surprising if he's back with the Bengals instead, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports.
ANALYSIS
The same was said last offseason until Mixon renegotiated his contract in mid-July to lower his base salaries for 2023 and 2024 while adding some incentives. He's now scheduled for an $8.85 million cap hit in the final year of his deal, with the Bengals carrying $2.75 million in dead money for 2024 if the running back is traded or released before he's due a $3 million roster bonus March 18. The timing of the bonus at least means we should have some clarity early in the offseason, whereas last year there were rumors swirling around Mixon from January to July. Possibilities for 2024 include a trade, release, contract extension or simply keeping him under his current deal. He turns 28 in July, coming off a 2023 campaign with 1,410 yards and 12 touchdowns from scrimmage.
Jan 7, 2024
Tops 1,000 yards in two-TD finale
Mixon rushed 14 times for 111 yards and a touchdown while catching one of two targets for a six-yard touchdown in Sunday's 31-14 win over the Browns. He finishes the season with 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns on 257 rushing attempts, along with 52 catches on 63 targets for 376 yards and three touchdowns.
ANALYSIS
Mixon took advantage of Cleveland resting numerous defensive starters with the Browns preparing for the playoffs. He opened the scoring with a one-yard rushing touchdown, and after eclipsing 1,000 rushing yards in a season for the fourth time in his career with a 44-yard carry, Mixon celebrated by capping that possession with a six-yard receiving score. The 27-year-old running back has one more year left on his deal after restructuring his contract in July, so Mixon should be back in the lead role for the Bengals next season.
Jan 5, 2024
In clear for Week 18
Mixon (illness) doesn't carry an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Mixon sat out Thursday's practice after coming down with an illness, but he returned to the field Friday as a full participant to clear up any concern about his status heading into the season finale. The veteran back has played more than 60 percent of the offensive snaps in all but one of Cincinnati's 16 games to date, but given that the 8-8 Bengals are eliminated from the playoffs and have little at stake in Week 18, it's possible the coaching staff looks to lighten Mixon's workload heading into the offseason. If that's the case, rookie fifth-round pick Chase Brown could take on a heightened role as Cincinnati's No. 2 option out of the backfield.
Jan 4, 2024
Misses practice with illness
Mixon was added to the Bengals' Week 18 injury report after sitting out Thursday's practice with an illness.
ANALYSIS
If Mixon is able to return to practice Friday as a limited or full participant, it would assuage some of the concern about his availability for Sunday's game against the Browns. However, with Cincinnati already eliminated from postseason contention heading into the Week 18 matchup, Mixon could be subject to a lighter workload than usual Sunday even if the illness is fully behind him. Rookie fifth-round pick Chase Brown has worked in a change-of-pace capacity behind Mixon over the last few weeks, but the Bengals could be motivated to give the Illinois product more reps in an otherwise meaningless season finale in preparation for him taking on a larger role in 2024.
Dec 31, 2023
Finds end zone against Chiefs
Mixon rushed the ball 21 times for 65 yards in Sunday's 25-17 loss to the Chiefs. He added four receptions on four targets for 22 yards and a touchdown.
ANALYSIS
After being challenged in his role as lead back for the last several weeks, Mixon out-touched Chase Brown 25-5. He was highly inefficient on the ground by averaging only 3.1 yards per carry, though he found more success as a pass catcher. The highlight of Mixon's performance came on a seven-yard touchdown catch early in the second quarter -- his ninth total trip to the end zone in his last 10 games.
Dec 23, 2023
Limited impact in lopsided loss
Mixon rushed 11 times for 43 yards and caught two of four targets for seven yards in Saturday's 34-11 loss to the Steelers. He also caught a two-point conversion
ANALYSIS
Mixon was held to just four yards on five first-half carries as the Bengals took a 24-0 deficit into the locker room. Cincinnati largely abandoned the run in the second half due to the large deficit, though Mixon found a bit more running room and caught a two-point conversion after Cincinnati's lone touchdown in the third quarter. Mixon's 50 scrimmage yards marked his lowest total since Week 10, but backup Chase Brown had only 24 scrimmage yards, so Mixon remains in the lead role heading into a Week 17 trip to Kansas City.
Dec 16, 2023
Seemingly cedes ground to backup
Mixon ran for 47 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries against Minnesota on Saturday while adding three catches for 14 yards on three targets.
ANALYSIS
Mixon did fairly well for himself, but the concerning news is that rookie backup Chase Brown poached seven carries and three targets on his own. Brown was less effective as a runner (23 yards) but more effective as a receiver (three catches for 28 yards). That's two weeks in a row that Brown made a noticeable impact as a pass catcher, and it's possible that the rookie has established a role somewhat at Mixon's expense. Mixon will remain the lead back against Pittsburgh in Week 16, though his usage share might be headed toward a low point in his Cincinnati career.
Dec 10, 2023
Sees 24 touches in Week 14 win
Mixon rushed 21 times for 79 yards and a touchdown and brought in three of four targets for 46 yards in the Bengals' 34-14 win over the Colts on Sunday.

Mixon saw rookie backfield mate Chase Brown increase his role with 11 touches in his own right, one of which resulted in an impressive 54-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the first quarter. Brown certainly passes the eyeball test as the more explosive of the two players, but Mixon continued to be trusted with the bulk of the rushing work and played a key role through the air himself. The veteran rounded out his productive afternoon with a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and he appears to have a clear grasp on the lead role going into a Week 15 home matchup against the Vikings on Saturday afternoon.

Strong all-around effort in OT win
Mixon rushed 19 times for 68 yards and two touchdowns and brought in six of seven targets for 49 yards in the Bengals' 34-31 overtime win over the Jaguars on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was instrumental in the Bengals' upset, recording six- and two-yard touchdown runs in the first half to help forge a 14-14 tie going into halftime. The versatile veteran was also a distant second in reception and receiving yards to Ja'Marr Chase on the night, and his totals in both categories were season highs. Mixon should continue to be heavily involved as both runner and receiver as Cincinnati aims to continue giving fill-in quarterback Jake Browning plenty of support in a Week 14 home matchup versus the Colts.

Saves day as pass catcher
Mixon rushed the ball eight times for 16 yards in Sunday's 16-10 loss to the Steelers. He added two receptions on two targets for 44 yards.
ANALYSIS
Despite playing most of the game within one score of the Steelers, the Bengals completely abandoned their rushing attack. That's reflected in Mixon's line, though he was utilized regularly as a checkdown option for Jake Browning. That saved his output in Sunday's loss, but his usage does raise concerns for his Week 13 matchup against the Jaguars and for the rest of the season.
Nov 16, 2023
Garners 100 total yards in loss
Mixon rushed 16 times for 69 yards and brought in all five targets for 31 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals' 34-20 loss to the Ravens on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was the most consistently productive member of a notably short-handed offense, posting his third-highest rushing yardage total of the season while also scoring his first receiving touchdown since Week 9 of last season on a four-yard grab just past the midway point of the second quarter. That throw came from Joe Burrow, who suffered a wrist injury on the play that forced him from the contest for the remainder of the night. With Burrow's status for a Week 12 contest against the Steelers on Sunday, Nov. 26 now in doubt, Mixon's already pivotal role in Cincinnati's offense could expand further if the star quarterback remains sidelined for that game.
Nov 12, 2023
Scores TD in Week 10 loss
Mixon rushed 11 times for 46 yards and a touchdown and brought in two of three targets for minus-1 yard in the Bengals' 30-27 loss to the Texans on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mixon put together a solid performance on the ground relative to the modest amount of opportunity he saw, with the highlight a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that brought the Bengals to within a field goal. The veteran back will take a three-game touchdown streak into a Week 11 road matchup against the Ravens on Thursday night, but he's yet to top 87 rushing yards in any game this season.
Nov 6, 2023
Produces TD with 19 touches
Mixon (chest) had 14 carries for 37 yards and a touchdown while adding five receptions for 31 yards off of six targets in Sunday's 24-18 win over the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Mixon suited up for Sunday Night Football as expected after dealing with a minor chest injury early in the practice week. Cincinnati's workhorse wound up handling 19 combined touches, which is right in line with the 18.7 touches he averaged prior to Sunday's win. Mixon's touchdowns and receptions are slightly behind last year's pace, but we could see the entire Bengals' offense receive a boost in the second half -- continuing with next Sunday's tilt versus Houston -- if Joe Burrow continues his recent hot streak.
Nov 5, 2023
Active versus Buffalo
Mixon (chest) is listed as active for Sunday night's game against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Though Mixon was officially listed as questionable for the contest, the running back's status for Sunday night's game never appeared to be in much danger after he logged full practices both Thursday and Friday. With his active status versus Buffalo confirmed, Mixon is slated to continue to lead the Bengals' backfield in Week 9, a context that has yielded steady volume for the 2017 second-rounder this season. Through his first seven games, Mixon is averaging 16 carries for 64.7 yards and 2.7 catches for 18.1 yards, while Trayveon Williams is second among the team's RBs with a total of seven carries and four catches in that span.
Nov 3, 2023
Listed as questionable, expected to play
Mixon (chest) is listed as questionable for Sunday night's game against the Bills after practicing fully Thursday and Friday.
ANALYSIS
After being limited Wednesday, back-to-back full sessions have Mixon trending upward ahead of Sunday night's 8:20 ET kickoff. Given that he's been able to work fully twice in a row, Mixon's Week 9 status doesn't appear in much danger despite the 'questionable' designation, with Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer relaying that coach Zac Taylor noted Friday of Mixon, that "he'll be good. He was just sore."
Nov 2, 2023
Practices fully Thursday
Mixon (chest) returned to a full practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was limited at Wednesday's session, but the running back's return to a full practice a day later sets the stage for him to continue to lead the Bengals' rushing attack Sunday night against the Bills. Through seven games to date, Mixon has dominated the team's backfield touches, having carried 112 times for 453 yards and two TDs, while adding 19 catches (on 24 targets) for 127 yards. For some perspective, Trayveon Williams is ranked second among the team's RBs with just seven carries.
Nov 1, 2023
Tending to chest injury
Mixon was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice due to a chest injury, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
For the first time all season, Mixon is appearing on the Bengals' practice report as anything other than a full participant. He wasn't reported to have suffered an injury during the Bengals' 31-17 win over the 49ers this past Sunday, when he carried 16 times for a season-high 87 yards and a touchdown while hauling in all three of his targets for 23 receiving yards. The fact that Mixon was able to take at least some reps during the Bengals' first Week 9 practice session bodes well for his chances of playing this Sunday against the Bills, but ideally, he'll upgrade to full activity Thursday or Friday and avoid taking a designation into the weekend.
Oct 29, 2023
Solves 49ers defense in win
Mixon rushed 16 times for 87 yards and a touchdown and secured all three targets for 23 yards in the Bengals' 31-17 win over the 49ers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mixon enjoyed rare rushing success against the 49ers normally stout front seven, with the veteran looking explosive on multiple runs throughout the afternoon. Mixon came into the contest averaging just 3.8 yards per carry for the season, but his yardage total Sunday was his highest yet in 2023. The seven-year pro also recorded his second touchdown of the season on a five-yard touchdown rush with 2:54 remaining that sealed the victory for Cincinnati, and he'll head into a Week 9 home matchup against the Bills next Sunday night with multiple receptions in three straight games as well.
Oct 15, 2023
Limited to 62 total yards
Mixon rushed the ball 12 times for 38 yards in Sunday's 17-13 win over Seattle. He added three receptions on four targets for 24 yards.
ANALYSIS
Despite leading for nearly the entire game, the Bengals ran only 53 offensive plays. Mixon in particular felt the effects of that depressed volume, as he saw a season-low 12 carries. He salvaged his day a bit with work as a pass catcher, as his 24 yards were his second-best mark of the campaign. Through six games, Mixon has yet to surpass 100 total yards in any contest and has topped 70 rushing yards just once.
Oct 8, 2023
Productive in Week 5 win
Mixon carried the ball 25 times for 81 yards and caught all four of his targets for 13 yards in Sunday's 34-20 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
While Ja'Marr Chase scored all the touchdowns for the Bengals in the victory, Mixon kept the chains moving by topping 90 scrimmage yards for the second time this season. With quarterback Joe Burrow finally looking healthy again the whole Cincy offense should open up, giving Mixon some upside in Week 6 against a Seahawks defense that's given up five rushing TDs in four games.
Oct 1, 2023
Held to 76 total yards
Mixon carried the ball 14 times for 67 yards in Sunday's 27-3 loss to the Titans. He added one reception for nine yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was facing a stout run Titans' run defense, so his 4.8 yards per carry were respectable. He still didn't show much explosiveness -- his longest gain of the day went for only 13 yards -- though it's hard to hold that against him given the matchup and the overall state of Cincinnati's offense. Most importantly, Mixon continues to dominate work out of the backfield, as he accounted for 14 of the 15 carries by the team's running backs.
Sep 26, 2023
Breaks TD drought in win
Mixon carried the ball 19 times for 65 yards and a touchdown while catching one of two targets for five yards in Monday's 19-16 win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Mixon hit pay dirt for the first time this season with a 14-yard touchdown scamper on Cincinnati's first offensive drive coming out of the half. The 27-year-old experienced an increase in touches as the Bengals featured a more-balanced gameplan in the win following an 0-2 start. Backup Trayveon Williams was the only other back to record a carry, and he was limited to that one carry all game. Mixon should continue to dominate the backfield touches in a Week 4 matchup with the Titans next Sunday.
Sep 17, 2023
Modest results in losing effort
Mixon had 13 carries for 59 yards and four catches for 36 yards in Sunday's loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Early on, Mixon's runs were the only aspect of the Bengals' offense that were working. The offense opened up in the second half, which worked against Mixon a little bit as the Bengals tried to catch up. He'll hope to get in the end zone for the first time this season next Monday against the Rams.
Sep 10, 2023
Works as lead back in blowout loss
Mixon had 13 carries for 56 yards and caught three of five targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 24-3 loss to Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Mixon had more rushing yards (45) than Joe Burrow did passing yards (36) in the first half, but his success on the ground didn't lead to any points. Neither Chris Evans (three touches) nor Trayveon Williams (two touches) posed much of a threat to Mixon's workload while rookie fifth-round pick Chase Brown was a healthy scratch, so Mixon is the clear lead back for the Bengals heading into a Week 2 home game against the Ravens.
Aug 24, 2023
Starters not in line to play Saturday
With coach Zac Taylor noting Thursday that none of the Bengals' starters will play in Saturday's preseason finale against the Commanders, per Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, Mixon is presumably not in line to see action in the contest.
ANALYSIS
With the team's key players in line to sit out the contest, Mixon's next opportunity to see game action will occur in Week 1 against the Browns. While Mixon remains the Bengals' clear-cut top back when available, the pecking order behind him has yet to be solidified, with Trayveon Williams still dealing with an ankle injury. Also in the mix for complementary work behind Mixon are Chris Evans, who is a candidate for third-down duty, as well as 2023 fifth-rounder Chase Brown.
Aug 18, 2023
Not slated to play Friday
Mixon didn't make the trip for Friday's preseason game against the Falcons after attending to personal matters in Cincinnati, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Along with Mixon, fellow RB Trayveon Williams (ankle) also didn't make the trip, which sets the stage for Chris Evans and rookie Chase Brown to log the bulk of the team's carries as they did in last week's preseason opener against the Packers. Mixon's last chance to see exhibition action ahead of Week 1 will arrive Aug. 26 against the Commanders.

Found not guilty of aggravated menacing
Mixon was found not guilty of aggravated menacing in a county court ruling Thursday, Ben Baby of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Per the report, Hamilton County judge Gwen Bender indicated that city prosecutors failed to present enough evidence to prove the aggravated menacing charge stemming from an alleged road rage incident that took place on Jan. 21. In a statement released by the team Thursday, the Bengals noted "the organization is pleased that this matter is now behind everyone...and we look forward to an exciting season with Joe being an important part of the football team." As the coming season approaches, Mixon is slated to lead a Cincinnati backfield that also includes Trayveon Williams (ankle), Chase Brown and Chris Evans.

Agrees to restructured deal
Mixon agreed to restructure his contract Friday in order to remain with the Bengals this season, ESPN"s Adam Schefter reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was initially due a non-guaranteed $9.4 million salary for 2023, but he's reworking the deal to stay with the only team he's ever known. It's good news for Mixon's fantasy prospects, as it locks him in as Cincinnati's unquestioned lead back, especially after Samaje Perine left in free agency for Denver. Mixon turns 27 later this month but should have at least another season of top-18 fantasy numbers in him at the running back position.
Apr 30, 2023
Has support of coach
In his post-draft news conference Saturday, coach Zac Taylor relayed his support of Mixon's standing on the Bengals' roster, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
There's been offseason speculation that Mixon, who carries a $12.8 million hit against the salary cap in 2023, could be on the move, but Taylor noted Saturday that the running back's "future is here with the team. ... I like Joe Mixon." Following the draft, Mixon, who has been participating in the Bengals' voluntary workouts, remains atop an RB depth chart that also includes fellow returnees Trayveon Williams and Chris Evans, as well as fifth-round rookie Chase Brown. Meanwhile, last year's No. 2 back Samaje Perine signed with the Broncos in free agency. During the 2022 campaign, Mixon carried 210 times for 814 yards and seven TDs to go along with 60 catches for 441 yards and a pair of receiving scores in 14 games.

Pleads not guilty
Mixon has pleaded not guilty to a single count of aggravated menacing, stemming from an alleged Jan. 21 incident, Ben Baby of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that Mixon was granted recognizance for a $10,000 bond and requested a jury trial in relation to his case, which had been dismissed by the city prosecutor's office before being re-filed April 7. The running back, who was present for the first day of the Bengals' offseason workouts Monday, is coming off a 2022 season in which he recorded 1,255 yards from scrimmage and a total of nine TDs in 14 games.

Charges being refiled
The Cincinnati Police Department refiled a first degree misdemeanor criminal charge of Aggravated Menacing against Mixon on Friday, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was initially charged early February before the Hamilton County (Ohio) Municipal Court dismissed them the next day, but now the running back has been summoned to appear in court April 19. This refiling reopens the possibility for Mixon to potentially be subject to criminal punishment, not also discounting the possibility of punishment from the NFL. Mixon remains under contract with the Bengals through 2024.
Mar 16, 2023
Won't be indicted
Mixon won't be indicted in connection with a shooting that occurred near his home March 6, Ben Baby of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Baby, Mixon's home was part of a crime scene investigation where a teenager was shot in the foot while playing "Nerf wars," described by the report as a game involving toy guns. While Mixon's sister and her boyfriend reportedly face indictments stemming from the incident, the running back won't be subject to any criminal punishment. This past season, Mixon -- who is under contract with the Bengals through 2024 -- carried 210 times for 814 yards and seven TDs to go along with 60 catches for 441 yards and a pair of receiving scores in 14 games.

Has charge dismissed
Mixon's charge of aggravated menacing was dismissed by the Hamilton County (Ohio) Municipal Court on Friday, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports
ANALYSIS
An arrest warrant was issued for Mixon on Thursday, after which the Bengals released a statement: "The club is aware misdemeanor charges have been raised against Joe Mixon. The club is investigating the situation and will not comment further at this time." While the initial charge now isn't actionable, the presiding judge of the court said it could be refiled after further investigation. As such, Mixon doesn't appear to be out of the woods yet on the legal front, meaning punishment from the NFL remains a possibility.

Issued warrant for arrest
Mixon has been issued an arrest warrant on a count of aggravated menacing, per Hamilton County (Ohio) Court records, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bengals released a statement in the wake of the news: "The club is aware misdemeanor charges have been raised against Joe Mixon. The club is investigating the situation and will not comment further at this time." With the entire offseason ahead of him, the NFL will allow the legal process to play itself out before determining if any sort of punishment will be levied upon Mixon under the personal conduct policy.

Struggles in season-ending loss
Mixon rushed eight times for 19 yards and caught all three of his targets for 15 yards in Sunday's 23-20 AFC Championship Game loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
With Cincinnati's offensive line needing all the blocking help it could get against Kansas City's pass rush, Mixon ceded significant playing time to superior blocker Samaje Perine, who had 26 scrimmage yards on eight touches, including a two-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. It was a disappointing ending to an up and down season for Mixon, who had five scrimmage touchdowns in Week 9 against the Panthers but only five touchdowns in 16 other appearances between the regular season and playoffs. Mixon has two years remaining on his deal with the Bengals, while Perine's set to be an unrestricted free agent.
Jan 22, 2023
Tops century mark
Mixon rushed 20 times for 105 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-10 win over the Bills in the AFC divisional round. He also caught two of three targets for 18 yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon dashed through the snow behind a dominant offensive line, topping the 100-yard mark for the first time since his Week 9 explosion versus the Panthers. The tailback also plowed his way in for one-yard touchdown to close the third quarter, helping Cincinnati extend its one-score lead at the time. Mixon will now set his sights on next Sunday's matchup versus the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. Although he was sidelined for his team's meeting with Kansas City in Week 13 of the regular season, Mixon totaled 115 yards on 24 touches in last year's AFC Championship Game victory at Arrowhead Stadium.
Jan 15, 2023
Quiet in wild-card round
Mixon rushed 11 times for 39 yards while catching three of four targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 24-17 wild-card round win over the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Mixon failed to find much running room as the Bengals had to grind out difficult drives against the tough Baltimore defense. Joe Burrow vultured a short touchdown with a quarterback sneak, but Samaje Perine had just three scrimmage yards on two carries and one target, so Mixon should have an opportunity to bounce back with another sizable workload against the Bills in the AFC divisional round.
Jan 8, 2023
Scores to close regular season
Mixon rushed the ball 11 times for 27 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-16 win over Baltimore. He added five receptions on five targets for 41 yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was bottled up on the ground, though the Bengals averaged only 2.8 yards per rushing attempt as a team. He still managed a decent fantasy performance thanks to a one-yard plunge into the end zone late in the first quarter. Mixon was also active as a pass catcher and recorded the team's longest play from scrimmage with a 33-yard reception. He closes the regular season with 814 rushing yards and nine total touchdowns across 14 games and will be a key contributor during Cincinnati's postseason run.
Dec 25, 2022
108 combined yards
Mixon had 65 rushing yards on 16 carries, along another 43 receiving yards on seven catches in Sunday's win over the Pats.
ANALYSIS
The Bengals made it a priority to establish Mixon, who received the lion's share of backfield snaps. He had a touchdown taken away in the first half on a holding penalty against Devin Asiasi, which otherwise would have given him a really productive fantasy day.
Dec 18, 2022
Struggles on ground
Mixon was held to 21 rushing yards on 11 carries Sunday, adding five receptions (six targets) for 33 yards in a 34-23 win over Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was unable to take advantage of the gaping hole left in the middle of Tampa Bay's rush defense by the absence of star nose tackle Vita Vea (calf). The 26-year-old has been prone to these duds in 2022, as he now has four games of less than 30 rushing yards and no touchdowns. Mixon's overall numbers have been boosted by a monster four-touchdown game against Carolina in Week 9, but it hasn't been smooth sailing for fantasy managers who took the back high in drafts this year. Mixon will look to rebound against the Patriots on Saturday.
Dec 11, 2022
Solid return effort
Mixon had 14 carries for 96 yards and two catches for 10 yards in Sunday's win over the Browns.
ANALYSIS
As the Bengals promised, they did also include Samaje Perine (4-22-1, plus one catch for two yards on five targets) in the offense, but Mixon was the primary ballcarrier and the one they turned to frequently to finish off the game in the second half.
Dec 8, 2022
Out of concussion protocol
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed Thursday that Mixon cleared the NFL's concussion protocol last week, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports. After practicing fully Wednesday, Mixon is on track to end his two-game absence this Sunday against the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was a limited participant in all three of the Bengals' practices last week before being listed as questionable ahead of the team's game against the Chiefs. According to Dehner, Mixon disclosed that he was "barely" experiencing concussion symptoms that were mostly related to his vision by the end of the week, and despite clearing the protocol ahead of kickoff time, the Bengals ultimately chose to make the running back inactive for the second straight week in an eventual 27-24 win over Kansas City. With Mixon having now cleared the protocol and set to turn in a full week of practice, he'll be returning to action as the starter, which Taylor confirmed Wednesday, per Dehner. However, with backup Samaje Perine excelling in a three-down role in Mixon's absence the past two weeks, it's possible the distribution of work between the two backs is tighter than it had been in previous weeks when both were healthy.
Dec 7, 2022
Logs full practice
Mixon (concussion) was listed as a full practice participant Wednesday, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This marks the first time since Mixon suffered a concussion in Week 11 that he's been listed as a full practice participant. It remains to be seen if Mixon has fully cleared the NFL's concussion protocol, but in the absence of any setbacks in the coming days, it appears as though the Bengals' top RB is trending toward a return to action Sunday against the Browns.
Dec 7, 2022
Making progress
Mixon will need to go through a contact practice before he can be cleared from the NFL's concussion protocol, though coach Zac Taylor noted Wednesday that "everything is positive right now" in terms of the running back's status ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was limited at practice last week before being made inactive versus the Chiefs in Week 13, but it sounds as though the Bengals' top back is trending toward a return to the lineup this weekend. In Mixon's absence, Samaje Perine has been handling the bulk of the team's backfield touches.
Dec 4, 2022
Inactive Sunday
Mixon (concussion) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon, who missed last Sunday's win over Tennessee, logged limited listings on all three of the Bengals' practice reports this week, but the running back was ultimately unable to gain clearance to face Kansas City. In his continued absence, Samaje Perine -- who recorded 17 carries for 58 yards and a TD to go along with four catches (on seven targets) for 35 yards last weekend -- is slated to lead Cincinnati's Week 13 backfield, with Trayveon Williams and Chris Evans on hand to handle complementary work.
Dec 4, 2022
Looks like 'long shot' to play
Mixon, who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Chiefs while he remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, is viewed as a "long shot" to play, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With Sunday's game not kicking off until 4:25 p.m. ET, Mixon still has a few hours to theoretically clear the five-step protocol, but the Bengals don't seem to be proceeding with the belief that he'll be available. Mixon was able to practice only in a limited fashion this week, so even if he clears the protocol and isn't included on the Bengals' inactive list -- which will be released 90 minutes before kickoff -- he may not fill his usual high-volume role out of the backfield. If that's the case, Samaje Perine will be set up for another turn as a three-down back for Cincinnati after playing 80 percent of the snaps on offense and turning his 21 touches into 93 yards and a touchdown in last week's win over the Titans.
Dec 3, 2022
Remains in concussion protocol
Mixon (concussion) did not clear concussion protocol Saturday and remains questionable for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon has remained in concussion protocol for the entire week leading up to the matchup against the Chiefs and has only limited time prior to kickoff to be cleared. He remains questionable, however, and his status will become official shortly before 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday. If Mixon is out, Samaje Perine will serve as the Bengals' lead back for the second consecutive game.
Dec 2, 2022
Status up in air for Sunday
Mixon, who still is in the concussion protocol as of Friday, is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
While Mixon didn't practice at all last week before getting ruled out for this past Sunday's contest at Tennessee, he's been able to maintain limited listings on all three injury reports this week. With at least one phase to complete before Cincy can remove him from the protocol for head injuries, his status is up in the air, and Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff doesn't do fantasy managers any favors. If Mixon doesn't gain clearance to play, the Bengals again will hand over the backfield to Samaje Perine, who turned 21 touches into 93 yards from scrimmage and one rushing TD in place of the former in Week 12.
Dec 2, 2022
Still in concussion protocol
As of Friday, Mixon remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The running back has been able to practice in a limited fashion this week, but given that he has yet to officially clear concussion protocol, his status for Sunday's game against the Chiefs has yet to be determined. Friday's final injury report is slated to add further context with regard to Mixon's chances of playing this weekend, but if he's unable to suit up, Samaje Perine would be in line to lead the Bengals' Week 13 backfield.
Dec 1, 2022
Stays limited in practice
Mixon (concussion) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon's reps were capped in practice for the second day in a row, an indication that he hasn't made any notable progress since Wednesday as he works his way through the NFL's five-step concussion protocol. If Mixon is able to practice in full Friday, he would likely be in good shape to suit up Sunday against the Chiefs, though he would still need to receive clearance for an independent neurologist before getting the green light to suit up. In the event Mixon can't get cleared for the Week 13 matchup, Samaje Perine would be in store for another turn as Cincinnati's lead back after getting 21 touches (17 carries, four receptions) in last Sunday's win over the Titans.
Nov 30, 2022
Logs limited practice
Mixon (concussion) returned to a limited practice Wednesday, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon, who was inactive in Week 12 against the Titans, didn't practice at all leading up to that contest, so his participation in Wednesday's session bodes well for the running back's chances of returning to action Sunday against the Chiefs. In order to do so, Mixon will need to progress through the NFL's concussion protocol, but barring any setbacks in the coming days, he appears poised to return to leading Cincinnati's backfield this weekend.
Nov 30, 2022
Expected to practice Wednesday
Coach Zac Taylor expects Mixon (concussion) to practice Wednesday, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon, who was inactive for this past Sunday's win over the Titans, will need to fully clear the NFL's concussion protocol in order to suit up this weekend against the Chiefs, but the running back's looming return to practice Wednesday has him trending in the right direction ahead of Week 13 action.

Trending towards playing in Week 13
Mixon (concussion) is trending towards playing in Sunday's matchup against the Chiefs, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

As of Monday, Mixon remains in concussion protocols, per Ben Baby of ESPN.com, but it appears he's making good progress and should be able to clear protocols by the end of the week. Nonetheless, fantasy mangers should pay close attention to Mixon's participation in practices throughout Week 13 prep to ensure he'll be 100 percent heading into Sunday's showdown with Kansas City.

Remains in concussion protocol
Coach Zac Taylor said Monday that Mixon remains in concussion protocol but is making progress, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon suffered a concussion during the second quarter of Week 11 and was sidelined for Week 12, paving the way for Samaje Perine to lead Cincinnati's backfield. It's concerning to see Mixon still in protocols following the team's win over the Titans, but the starting running back's availability for Sunday's matchup against Kansas City should become clearer as the week progresses. If Mixon remains sidelined to begin Week 13 prep Wednesday, Perine could be in line for another expanded workload.
Nov 25, 2022
Ruled out for Sunday
Coach Zac Taylor noted Friday that Mixon (concussion) won't play Sunday against the Titans, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
As a result, look for Samaje Perine to lead the Bengals' Week 12 backfield, with Chris Evans and Trayveon Williams available to handle change-of-pace touches. Mixon's next chance to suit up will arrive in Week 13, when Cincinnati faces Kansas City at home.
Nov 25, 2022
Absent from practice Friday
Mixon (concussion) wasn't spotted during the media-access portion of Friday's practice, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday, so the running back's absence from the early portion of Friday's session doesn't bode well for his chances of playing Sunday against the Titans. If Mixon isn't able to play this weekend, Samaje Perine would be in line to lead the Bengals' backfield. After Perine, the Bengals would have Chris Evans and Trayveon Williams on hand to handle change-of-pace work.
Nov 24, 2022
Misses another practice
Mixon (concussion) remained sidelined at practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Following back-to-back missed sessions, Mixon has one more chance to take the practice field ahead of Sunday's game against the Titans. Friday's injury report will reveal whether the running back has a chance to suit up this weekend, but if Mixon is unable to gain clearance to face Tennessee, Samaje Perine would be in line to lead Cincinnati's Week 12 backfield, with Chris Evans and Trayveon Williams also on hand.
Nov 23, 2022
Not practicing
Mixon (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon got concussed during the second quarter of Sunday's win over the Steelers and unsurprisingly wasn't able to practice three days later. Samaje Perine scored three receiving TDs on Sunday and figures to get most of the backfield snaps/touches if Mixon isn't active this Sunday against Tennessee. The Bengals also have Chris Evans (knee) and Trayveon Williams as possible options, though neither has taken many touches this year.
Nov 23, 2022
In concussion protocol
Mixon remains in the NFL's concussion protocol ahead of Wednesday's practice, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon will need to clear the league's concussion protocol in order to be able to play Sunday against the Titans. However, if he's unable to suit up this weekend, Samaje Perine would be in line to handle an expanded role in the Bengals' backfield in Week 12.
Nov 20, 2022
Officially has concussion
Mixon has been ruled out of Sunday's game in Pittsburgh due to a concussion.
ANALYSIS
Mixon thus will end Week 11 with seven carries for 20 yards and three catches (on three targets) for 42 yards. He'll be subject to the protocol for head injuries before he'll be able to return to action, but his status for next Sunday's contest at Tennessee now is up in the air. Mixon will yield the Bengals backfield to Samaje Perine until he's healthy.
Nov 20, 2022
Being examined for head injury
Mixon is under evaluation for a head injury during Sunday's game at Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his exit in the third quarter, Mixon posted seven carries for 20 yards and hauled in all three targets for 42 yards. If Mixon enters the concussion protocol, he'll cede the Bengals backfield to Samaje Perine, who has two TD catches to his name so far in Week 11.
Nov 6, 2022
Erupts for five touchdowns
Mixon rushed the ball 22 times for 153 yards and four touchdowns in Sunday's 42-21 win over the Panthers. He added four receptions on five targets for 58 yards and an additional score.
ANALYSIS
Mixon entered the game with only three total touchdowns and without a rush of more than 20 yards since Week 1. He reversed both trends in convincing fashion, accounting for five of the six Bengals' touchdowns. The majority came near the goal line, though he also tallied a 12-yard receiving score and a 14-yard rushing touchdown. Additionally, Mixon ripped off long gains of 35, 29, 20 and 17 yards to average more than four yards per carry in a game for only the third time this season. After maintaining fantasy value on the basis of volume for the majority of the season, Mixon put it all together in his massive performance against the Panthers.
Oct 31, 2022
More targets than carries in loss
Mixon rushed eight times for 27 yards and caught seven of nine targets for 32 yards in Monday's 32-13 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was bottled up in the first half, mustering only 17 scrimmage yards on nine touches as the Bengals took an 11-0 deficit into the locker room. Things didn't get much better for the Bengals in the second half, as the offense didn't get going until the game was well out of hand. Mixon's rushing attempts were limited with the team down big, but he tied his season highs in both targets and catches. A more favorable game script should lead to more carries for Mixon in Week 9, as the Bengals will be favored at home against the Panthers.
Oct 23, 2022
Tallies 91 total yards
Mixon rushed the ball 17 times for 58 yards in Sunday's 35-17 win over the Falcons. He added three receptions for 33 yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon accounted for 17 of Cincinnati's 18 carries by running backs, and five of his attempts came from inside Atlanta's 10-yard line. His inefficiencies on the ground -- his longest carry went for 11 yards and he averaged only 3.4 yards attempt -- were also tempered by his involvement in the passing game. While his role in Cincinnati's offense is unquestioned, Mixon has yet to top 85 rushing yards in a game this season and has not recorded a gain of more than 20 yards on the ground since Week 1.
Oct 16, 2022
Nabs receiving TD in win
Mixon rushed eight times for 45 yards and caught four of five targets for 23 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 30-26 win over the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Joe Burrow (300 yards and four scores) and Ja'Marr Chase (132 yards and two scores) stole the show at the Superdome, but Mixon was able to get in on the fantasy goodness with his first receiving touchdown of the season. The veteran did see his carries decline for the third game in a row, but he also received 80 percent of the backfield touches, maintaining his status as Cincinnati's lead back over Samaje Perine (two carries for five yards). Mixon has also been more efficient over his last two contests (5.6 YPC) compared to earlier in the year, which is a positive signal heading into a favorable matchup against Atlanta next Sunday.
Oct 10, 2022
Goes for 88 yards on SNF
Mixon rushed 14 times for 78 yards and corralled all three of his targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 19-17 loss to Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
The Bengals seemed to forget that Mixon was active in the first quarter, giving their lead back just one carry in the period before eventually getting him rolling in the second half. The 25-year-old finished with his most-efficient game as a rusher this season despite the lower usage (5.6 yards per carry), as he entered Sunday's contest with an ugly mark of 2.7 YPC through four weeks. Mixon will look to carry this positive momentum into next Sunday's tilt against the Saints, who have allowed 130.0 rushing yards per game to opposing running backs through five games.
Sep 30, 2022
Toughs out heavy workload Thursday
Mixon rushed 24 times for 61 yards and a touchdown and brought in all four targets for 13 yards in the Bengals' 27-15 win over the Dolphins on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Mixon couldn't find any room against a Dolphins team that had been stingy against the run and operating behind an offensive line that had struggled to open any lanes over the first three games. However, the veteran back toughed it out while handling his second-highest volume on the ground this season, and he salvaged his fantasy night with a five-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to open the scoring for the Bengals. Mixon also notched his second-highest reception total over the first four games, and he'll likely shoulder another heavy workload in a Week 5 road divisional showdown with the Ravens a week from Sunday.
Sep 28, 2022
Cleared for TNF
Mixon (ankle) doesn't have an injury designation for Thursday's game against Miami.
ANALYSIS
The Bengals listed Mixon as a full practice participant Wednesday and Thursday, confirming his ankle injury is minor. He'll start and likely dominate carries again, but the Bengals haven't been able to run the ball this year (2.8 YPC for Mixon) while the Dolphins have allowed only 3.5 YPC to running backs. The volume alone makes Mixon a must-start in most formats, even as the Bengals offense struggles to find its footing this year.
Sep 26, 2022
Ankle not a problem for TNF
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said Monday that Mixon (ankle) is good to go for Thursday's showdown with Miami, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor said Mixon got his ankle nicked up during Sunday's win over the Jets, but it doesn't appear like it's serious enough to sideline him for Week 4, even on the short turnaround. The running back rushed 12 times for 24 yards and caught three of seven targets for 14 yards during Sunday's win, continuing his underwhelming start to the season. Taylor's comments are certainly encouraging, but fantasy mangers should still track Mixon's practice statues throughout the week to monitor any potential setbacks.
Sep 25, 2022
Slow start on ground continues
Mixon rushed 12 times for 24 yards and caught three of seven targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 27-12 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Joe Burrow carved up New York's secondary for three touchdowns, but Mixon didn't find much room to operate on the ground. Samaje Perine's superior pass protection has earned the backup playing time at Mixon's expense in passing situations, which is why Perine was on the field to score a 12-yard touchdown on third down to cap the Bengals' opening drive. Averaging just 2.8 yards per carry behind Cincinnati's struggling offensive line and seeing limited usage in the passing game, Mixon's off to an underwhelming start heading into Thursday's Week 4 matchup with the Dolphins. The short week comes at an inopportune time, as coach Zac Taylor described Mixon's ankle as "a little sore" after the game, per James Rapien of Sports Illustrated.
Sep 18, 2022
Tough yards in Week 2 loss
Mixon carried the ball 19 times for 57 yards and caught three of four targets for 26 yards in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
The Bengals have had major issues along the offensive line to open the season, and while Joe Burrow being sacked 13 times in two games is the most glaring symptom, Mixon's 3.0 yards per carry is also a problem. The veteran back has at least stayed involved as a pass-catcher to bolster his raw numbers, but he could find more success on the ground in Week 3 against a Jets defense that just got gashed for three TDs by Nick Chubb.
Sep 11, 2022
Heavy usage in difficult game
Mixon ran for 82 yards on 27 carries and caught seven passes for 63 yards on nine targets against Pittsburgh on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The mammoth volume was partially informed by the overtime period, but Mixon saw consistent usage all game before then too. He did his part in what was mostly an overwhelmed offense, as the Steelers defense knocked around the Bengals offense most of the game, especially early on. Tee Higgins (concussion) missed most of the game, which might have affected Mixon's target count, but even backup Samaje Perine saw five targets in this one. Particularly if Higgins is out against Dallas next week, Mixon might again need to be active as a pass catcher in Week 2.
Aug 15, 2022
Unlikely to play this week
Mixon and other starters likely will be held out of Sunday's preseason game against the Giants, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Zac Taylor said he's likely to sit most of his key players for a second straight week. It's unclear if Mixon will play in the preseason finale, or not at all this exhibition season, but either way he's locked in for a starring role as Cincinnati's lead back come Week 1.
Aug 10, 2022
Among starters who could sit Friday
With coach Zac Taylor noting that a majority of the Bengals' starters won't play in Friday's preseason opener against the Cardinals, per Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, Mixon appears unlikely to see action in the contest.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen when Mixon will next see game action, but given that he's entrenched as the Bengals' starting running back, the team has no need to force things with the 26-year-old during the upcoming exhibition slate. With that in mind, look for the focus Friday to be on younger players and those competing for depth slotting.
Jul 10, 2022
Could play a few more third downs
Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan prefers resting Mixon on third down rather than early downs, but Callahan did say he'd like to see "maybe a little bit more usage on third down" this season, ESPN's Ben Baby reports.
ANALYSIS
Backup Samaje Perine isn't a better pass catcher than Mixon, but Perine did solid work last year and the Bengals prefer to rest their starter on downs where a run play is unlikely. Coach Zac Taylor noted that more targets for Mixon would mean less for someone else, specifically naming star wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Given that the team still has Perine -- plus another potential passing down back in 2021 sixth-round pick Chris Evans -- it's unlikely this will be the year Mixon gets regular work on third downs. It's been a topic of discussion among fantasy players nearly every season of his career, with some thinking it would happen in 2021 after RB Giovani Bernard ended his eight-year run in Cincinnati. Instead, Mixon found fantasy success with career highs for carries (292), rushing yards (1,205) and touchdowns (16 total), while his mark of 2.6 receptions per game was identical to his career number. Even if he doesn't catch more passes, Mixon has an opportunity to match or exceed his number
Feb 13, 2022
Stars in trick-play score
Mixon rushed the ball 15 times for 72 yards in Sunday's 23-20 Super Bowl LVI loss to the Rams. He added five receptions for one yard and also threw a six-yard touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was effective as a rusher, delivering three gains of at least 10 yards. However, his primary impact came midway through the second quarter when he delivered a six-yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins in the back corner of the end zone on a trick play. Mixon posted one of his better games of the postseason and combined to record 160 rushing yards combined between the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl. He'll return to Cincinnati as the team's lead back for the 2022 season, and it's possible that he'll have more running lanes if the Bengals upgrade their offensive line during the offseason.
Jan 30, 2022
Another productive effort
Mixon rushed the ball 21 times for 88 yards in Sunday's 27-24 win over Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game. He added three receptions for 27 yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was the only running back to get a carry out of Cincinnati's backfield, and he worked fairly effectively on the ground. His longest rush of the day went for 23 yards late in the first quarter and pushed Cincinnati into field-goal range for their first score of the game. Mixon was also a major contributor in the team's game-sealing drive in overtime, as he broke off a 13-yard run to set up a field goal three plays later. He has now topped 100 total yards in consecutive games heading into a Super Bowl matchup against either the Rams of 49ers.
Jan 22, 2022
Tops 100 total yards
Mixon rushed the ball 14 times for 54 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 19-16 divisional-round win over the Titans. He added six receptions for 51 yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was involved in all aspects of the Bengals' offense, as he accounted for 14 of the team's 18 rushing attempts while also racking up seven targets. He wasn't all that productive on the ground, though he did find the end zone on a 16-yard rush early in the third quarter. Mixon was also far more efficient as a receiver and topped 50 receiving yards for only the second time since Week 9 of the regular season. Though the passing attack has gotten the majority of the attention during Cincinnati's recent run of strong play, Mixon will be a key contributor in the AFC Championship Game.
Jan 15, 2022
Contained in wild-card round
Mixon ran for 48 yards on 17 carries and caught four passes for 28 yards on five targets against Las Vegas on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
It's a reassuring workload and a reminder that Mixon can take on a high volume of touches depending on the flow of a game, but the Raiders did a good job containing Mixon from scrimmage in this one. The Bengals mostly needed Mixon to run out the clock in the 26-19 victory, and he played that part effectively.
Jan 10, 2022
Comes off COVID list
The Bengals activated Mixon (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was forced to miss the regular-season finale against Cleveland after testing positive for COVID-19, but now that he's cleared the league's health and safety protocols he can officially return to team facilities. Cincinnati's offense will thus have its star running back available in practice leading up to Saturday's wild-card round matchup against the Raiders.
Jan 8, 2022
Still on COVID list
Mixon remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Mixon, who landed on the list Wednesday, wasn't activated by the Bengals ahead of Week 18 action, so until he clears the NFL's COVID protocols, look for Samaje Perine to head the team's backfield, with Chris Evans and Trayveon Williams in the mix to see complementary work.
Jan 5, 2022
Officially on COVID list
Mixon (illness) has been officially placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
ANALYSIS
Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Mixon reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 and is not in line to play Sunday against the Browns. If that's the case, Samaje Perine would be in line to head the Bengals' Week 18 backfield, with Chris Evans and Trayveon Williams in the mix to see complementary work.
Jan 5, 2022
Set for COVID list, to miss Week 18
Mixon (illness) tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday and will reportedly miss Sunday's game against the Browns, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bengals haven't yet officially confirmed Schefter's report, but it appears inevitable that Mixon is placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list in the near future. Samaje Perine will stand to inherit the lead role in Cincinnati's backfield if Mixon is indeed ruled out for Week 18, while Chris Evans would also handle a larger offensive role.
Jan 2, 2022
Stays busy in win
Mixon rushed 12 times for 46 yards while catching seven of eight targets for 40 yards in Sunday's 34-31 win over Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Mixon put forth a workmanlike effort, racking up 86 scrimmage yards despite none of his 19 touches going for more than 15 yards. He was stuffed from the Chiefs' one-yard line on the Bengals' final drive, but that proved to be a blessing in disguise for Cincinnati, as a subsequent penalty on the defense allowed the Bengals to run out the clock before kicking a game-winning field goal. Mixon has at least 18 touches in each of his last nine games heading into the season finale in Cleveland.
Dec 26, 2021
Big bounce-back effort
Mixon ran for 65 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries while catching six passes for 70 yards and one touchdown on six targets against Baltimore on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mixon had a quiet few weeks preceding this game, but with this strong dual-threat output he's back on rhythm as the Bengals head into a crucial Week 17 matchup against the Chiefs. Mixon's usage is very high almost every week in the Cincinnati offense, and he'll be in good position for a productive finish to the season especially if quarterback Joe Burrow can maintain his momentum after a 525-yard, four-touchdown breakout game against the Ravens.
Dec 22, 2021
Ankle apparently fine
Mixon (ankle) was a full practice participant Wednesday, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
That answers any questions about his Week 16 availability, after Mixon hurt his ankle late in Sunday's win over the Broncos. Coach Zac Taylor said Monday that he expected Mixon to be a limited participant Wednesday, but the running back instead managed to practice without any restrictions. He'll lead the Cincinnati backfield this Sunday against the Ravens.
Dec 22, 2021
Slated to practice Wednesday
Mixon (ankle) will practice Wednesday, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
It's plausible that Mixon will be listed as a limited participant, but coach Zac Taylor noted that the running back is "feeling pretty good" at this stage. With that in mind, Mixon's status should still be monitored closely, but he's trending in the right direction as Sunday's game against the Ravens approaches.
Dec 20, 2021
May have reps capped in practice
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said Mixon will likely begin Week 16 prep as a limited participant in practice after injuring his left ankle in Sunday's win over the Broncos, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, Taylor said reports on Mixon's ankle injury are "encouraging," so the running back looks like he'll have a good chance to play next weekend against Baltimore even if his reps are capped in practices Wednesday through Friday. Mixon handled a relatively normal snap share (59 percent) in the 15-10 win over Denver, but he struggled to find much open real estate as a runner (17 carries for 58 yards) or as a receiver (one catch for two yards).
Dec 19, 2021
Bottled up by Broncos
Mixon carried the ball 17 times for 58 yards in Sunday's 15-10 win over Denver. He added one reception for two yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was limited to under 60 rushing yards for the third consecutive game and was held out of the end zone in consecutive contests for the first time since Week 3. Of particular concern is Mixon's lack of involvement in the passing game of late, as he's recorded only seven catches across his last five contests. More positively, he continued to dominate work out of the backfield, accounting for 17 of the 26 rush attempts for Cincinnati. Finally, it will be worth monitoring Mixon's practice status throughout the week, as he appeared to suffer an ankle injury on one of the team's final drives, according to Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site.
Dec 12, 2021
Held in check Sunday
Mixon carried the ball 18 times for 58 yards and caught both his targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 26-23 overtime loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
For the first time since Week 3, Mixon failed to get into the end zone as his nine-game TD streak got snapped. He also didn't sniff 100 scrimmage yards for the second consecutive contest, after reaching that mark in three straight. Mixon still reached 1,000 rushing yards for the season, the third time in his career he's accomplished that feat, and he'll look to get back to his scoring ways in Week 15 against the Broncos.
Dec 12, 2021
Suits up Sunday
Mixon (illness) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the 49ers, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Though an illness prevented Mixon from practicing this past week, he'll give it a go Sunday. Assuming no setbacks, he should lead the Bengals' Week 14 rushing attack, with Samaje Perine on hand to work in a complementary role and Trayveon Williams in reserve.
Dec 12, 2021
Expected to play in Week 14
Mixon (illness) is expected to play Sunday against the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
An illness led to Mixon not practicing this past week, but Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site previously relayed that coach Zac Taylor anticipated that the team's top running back would be ready to suit up versus San Francisco. Official confirmation of Mixon's Week 14 status will arrive upon the release of his team's inactives prior to Sunday's 4:25 ET kickoff.
Dec 10, 2021
Listed as questionable for Sunday
Mixon (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's 4:25 ET game against the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Though an illness prevented Mixon from practicing this past week, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site relays that coach Zac Taylor anticipates the running back being able to play this weekend. Look for added clarity with regard to Mixon's Week 14 availability to arrive no later than late Saturday/early Sunday when national reporters such as ESPN's Adam Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport issue their weekly injury/status updates. If Mixon ends up limited or out, however, added backfield work would be available for Samaje Perine.
Dec 10, 2021
Remains sidelined
Though Mixon (illness) was present for practice Friday, he was not a participant, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon, who has been dealing with an unspecified illness all week, figures to be listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the 49ers. That said, coach Zac Taylor anticipates the running back being able to play, with Ben Baby of ESPN.com noting that the team should have a better idea of where Mixon's Week 14 status stands after he's evaluated Saturday.
Dec 9, 2021
Not at practice Thursday
Mixon (illness) wasn't seen warming up Thursday and will go down as a non-participant on the Bengals' official practice report, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon wasn't in attendance for Wednesday's session either due to a non-COVID-19-related illness, so he'll likely need to get back on the field in some capacity Friday to avoid taking a designation into Sunday's game against the 49ers. Since the Bengals' Week 10 bye, Mixon has handled heavy workloads in each of the subsequent three contests, averaging 27 touches per game during that stretch. Samaje Perine is the next man up out of the backfield if Mixon ends up sitting out or is limited in any capacity Sunday.
Dec 8, 2021
Sidelined Wednesday
Mixon will miss Wednesday's practice due to an illness that is not believed to be COVID-related, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, coach Zac Taylor indicated that the neck issue Mixon dealt with during Week 13 action is not a concern,Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. With Mixon sidelined Wednesday, Samaje Perine is presumably in line to handle the Bengals' first-team running back reps in practice.
Dec 5, 2021
Hurts neck in Week 13 loss
Mixon revealed after Sunday's 41-22 loss to the Chargers that he hurt his neck during the game, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
The running back was still able to log 19 carries for 54 yards and a TD (with a lost fumble) in the contest, but it will still be worth monitoring his status as next Sunday's game against the 49ers approaches. If Mixon ends up missing any practice time, Samaje Perine would be next up for the team's running back reps.
Nov 28, 2021
Continues to dominate
Mixon rushed 28 times for 165 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 41-10 win over the Steelers. He added four receptions on four targets for negative two yards.
ANALYSIS
Mixon continued his recent assault on opposing defenses, scoring multiple touchdowns for the fourth game in a row. The 24-year-old has also seen a huge uptick in usage of late, averaging 144 rushing yards on 29 carries over Cincinnati's last two contests after failing to reach 20 carries over the previous seven. The Bengals' recent commitment to the run has resulted in a two-game win streak following a mid-season lull, so Mixon should continue to see heavy usage heading into a home matchup against another AFC playoff hopeful, the Los Angeles Chargers, next Sunday.
Nov 21, 2021
Big day in Vegas
Mixon carried the ball 30 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 32-13 win over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
He didn't see a target for only the second time all season, but it was a small price to pay for his first triple-digit rushing performance since Week 1 and his third straight multi-TD game. Mixon has already set new career highs with nine rushing and 11 total touchdowns on the season, and he's gotten into the end zone in seven straight contests -- a streak he'll look to extend in Week 12 against the Steelers.
Nov 7, 2021
Another two-TD effort
Mixon rushed 13 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns while catching all five of his targets for 46 yards in Sunday's 41-16 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Mixon scored from 11 yards out in the first quarter and again from two yards out in the fourth, but it was all Browns in between. The workhorse running back excelled despite Cincinnati's struggles in this one, once again showing that he can thrive regardless of game flow. Mixon has seven rushing touchdowns in his last seven games and will remain a must-start fantasy option after the Bengals come out of their Week 10 bye.
Oct 31, 2021
Scores twice in upset loss
Mixon rushed 14 times for 33 yards and a touchdown while catching four of five targets for 58 yards and another touchdown in Sunday's 34-31 loss to the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Mixon couldn't find much running room but was effective as a pass-catcher and salvaged his day on the ground with a one-yard rushing score early in the second quarter. His fifth rushing touchdown of the season was a long time coming, as it came on Mixon's fourth touch from inside New York's two-yard line. He added his second receiving score of the year from eight yards out in the third quarter, but the Jets took over late to pull off a Halloween treat for the fans at MetLife Stadium. After out-touching Samaje Perine 18-2, Mixon should work as the Bengals' feature back against the Browns in Week 9.
Oct 31, 2021
Likely to split work with Perine
Mixon is expected to split reps at running back with Samaje Perine in Sunday's game against the Jets, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Any split of the snaps and touches out of the backfield is likely to tilt in Mixon's direction, but the absence of pass-catching specialist Chris Evans (hamstring) -- who is inactive -- at least removes one extra variable from the equation. With Evans out, Perine is the unquestioned top change-of-pace option behind Mixon, and the heavily-favored Bengals could end up leaning on Perine more than anticipated if the contest isn't competitive by the second half. While the prospect of a blowout could prompt fantasy managers to temper expectations with Mixon's workload, the 25-year-old would at least have decent odds of coming away with a touchdown if the Bengals do in fact rest starters later in the contest.
Oct 24, 2021
Salvages day with late TD
Mixon rushed 12 times for 59 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 41-17 win over the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
The Bengals struggled to get much going against the Ravens' defensive front, but late scores from Mixon and Samaje Perine (both from 20-plus yards out) helped mask what was a rough day on the ground. Mixon has been a solid fantasy contributor so far through seven games, but his continued decline in the passing game does hurt his stock a bit. The 25-year-old had zero receptions (or targets) Sunday and has now recorded five games with one or fewer receptions. Mixon is still the lead dog in Cincinnati -- the even split in carries with Perine was a result of the blowout -- so he remains a solid option heading into a favorable matchup against the Jets next Sunday.
Oct 17, 2021
Productive with 23 touches
Mixon rushed 18 times for 94 yards and secured five of six targets for 59 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals' 34-11 win over the Lions on Sunday. He also committed a fumble but recovered.
ANALYSIS
Mixon had a tantalizing matchup in front of him and didn't disappoint, making almost as much of an impact through the air as he did on the ground. The fifth-year back was expected to take on a normal workload despite his recent ankle issues, and Mixon did indeed outpace his nearest position mate, Trayveon Williams, by 12 carries. His receiving touchdown was an impressive 40-yard scamper early in the third quarter that was partly made possible by an excellent block by Ja'Marr Chase, his first score through the air of the season. Mixon's yardage tally on the ground was his highest since Week 1's 127-yard haul in the overtime win against the Vikings, and he'll look to build on it in Week 7 versus the Ravens on the road.
Oct 17, 2021
Suits up Sunday
Mixon (ankle) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Lions, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon, who practiced in a limited fashion Friday, continues to manage an ankle issue, but he'll be available Sunday, with Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site having previously noted that the team's top running back, who was limited to 10 carries in Week 5, is expected to get closer to his normal workload this time around. With Samaje Perine - who logged 11 carries last weekend - on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Chris Evans and Trayveon Williams are on hand to work in complementary roles behind Mixon versus the 0-5 Lions, who have allowed an average of 130.2 rushing yards per game to date.
Oct 16, 2021
Set for lead role
The Bengals did not activate Samaje Perine from the reserve/COVID-19 list meaning Mixon (ankle) is expected to carry the full workload Sunday against the Lions.
ANALYSIS
In a corresponding move the Bengals elevated Trayveon Williams from the practice with the expectation he, not Chris Evans, will operate as the backup behind Mixon. The star tailback saw his fewest touches in a game since Week 6 of the 2019 season while a low-grade ankle sprain, but it appears as if Mixon will be more or less back to his usual workload, particularly with experienced backup Perine not in the picture. Through five weeks, the Lions have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing running backs in the NFL.
Oct 15, 2021
On pace for typical workload
Mixon (ankle), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest at Detroit, is expected to handle a "normal" workload this weekend, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon came out of Week 4 with what was termed a low-grade ankle sprain at the time. He didn't practice at all last week, but after putting in a positive workout last Saturday he began to trend in the right direction to suit up Week 5 against the Packers. Indeed, Mixon did just that, but he also handled his fewest touches in a game (11) since Week 6 of the 2019 season. He proceeded to sandwich limited sessions around a DNP on Thursday, and on Friday coach Zac Taylor implied Mixon would be back to his usual amount of work Sunday. "I think every week you come off a sprained ankle, it gets better," Taylor said. Mixon also may not have to contend for snaps with Samaje Perine, who tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. If rookie Chris Evans is Mixon's primary backup, the latter could approach the amount of work from his 46 career starts (19.7 touches for 90.3 yards from scrimmage per game, 27 TDs).
Oct 15, 2021
Status in question for Week 6
Mixon (ankle) officially is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest at Detroit, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
After putting in limited work Wednesday, Jacobs was a non-participant Thursday, but it appeared to be a maintenance day considering he was present and engaged, according to Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site. Assuming Jacobs is out there for Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, it'll be interesting to see if he'll handle more than the 28 percent snap share he earned during the Week 5 loss to the Packers. In that contest, Mixon had 11 touches for 35 yards from scrimmage and one TD, Samaje Perine went for 83 total yards on 15 touches, and Chris Evans hauled in both of his targets for 15 yards. Perine's availability is in question due to testing positive for COVID-19 on Monday, so it could very well be the Mixon-Evans show Sunday.
Oct 15, 2021
Back at practice Friday
Mixon (ankle) is participating at practice Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon sat out Thursday's practice to help manage the ankle issue after working as a limited participant Wednesday, and he's returned to the field for Friday's session. The 25-year-old played only 28 percent of the offensive snaps during last week's loss to the Packers, while Samaje Perine -- who had 15 touches for 83 yards and a touchdown -- tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. Mixon appears to be trending in the right direction for Sunday's game at Detroit, while rookie Chris Evans is currently the only fully healthy tailback on the active roster.
Oct 14, 2021
Gets maintenance Thursday
Mixon (ankle) was a non-participant in Thursday's practice in what may have amounted to a maintenance day, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
After the ankle injury contributed to Mixon handling his lightest workload of the season in Sunday's overtime loss to the Packers, he opened Week 6 prep as a limited participant during Wednesday's practice. The fact that Mixon took a step back in terms of activity a day later would normally be cause for concern, but his listing as a non-participant Thursday looks as though it may have been a pre-planned arrangement rather than the result of a setback. As Hobson notes, "the way [Mixon] was bouncing around" while working off to the side Thursday points to him getting more of a rest day, which may have had the secondary purpose of opening up more reps with the offense for backups Chris Evans and Trayveon Williams. Neither Evans nor Williams has logged a carry this season, and both will move up a spot on the depth chart Week 6 with Mixon's top understudy, Samaje Perine (illness), expected to miss Sunday's game in Detroit after testing positive for COVID-19.
Oct 14, 2021
Spectator for practice
Mixon (ankle) was spotted off to the side during Thursday's practice and is set to go down as a non-participant, James Rapien of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though head coach Zac Taylor said Mixon was moving around well after practicing on a limited basis Wednesday, the running back's inability to join his healthy teammates on the field a day later isn't the most encouraging sign for his availability this weekend in Detroit. While managing the ankle injury ahead of last week's loss to the Packers, Mixon saw a light workload, playing only 18 snaps while getting 11 touches (10 carries, one reception). Fantasy managers may have been hoping Mixon would be ready to handle his normal three-down duties this weekend, but his absence from practice Thursday suddenly leaves his ability to do that in question.
Oct 13, 2021
Logs limited practice
Mixon (ankle) was listed as a limited practice participant Wednesday, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to Wednesday's practice, coach Zac Taylor noted that Mixon's ankle injury benefited from the rest he's had over the last couple of days, but the running back's practice reps will be managed this week, nonetheless, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports. While Mixon is trending toward playing Sunday against the Lions, Samaje Perine, who saw an expanded role in Week 5 with Mixon's touches limited versus Green Bay, is currently on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.
Oct 10, 2021
Active against Packers
Mixon (ankle) is active Week 5 against Green Bay, Jay Morrison of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite not seeing the practice field for a single session all week, Mixon apparently got in some light workouts Saturday that led to earlier reports suggesting he would be able to suit up. That notion has since been confirmed with the release of the inactive list, though it's fair to wonder how close to a regular workload Mixon might see. He's been on the field for 72 percent of snaps or greater in each of the season's first four weeks, but should that mark be unattainable Sunday, look for Samaje Perine and Chris Evans -- in that order -- to provide relief.
Oct 9, 2021
Trending toward suiting up Sunday
Mixon (ankle), who went through a workout Saturday morning, is trending toward playing in some capacity Sunday against the Packers, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
ANALYSIS
The running back is officially listed as questionable for the contest after not practicing this past week, but evidently he looked good enough Saturday to have a chance to suit up versus Green Bay. If Mixon does avoid the inactive list in advance of Sunday's 1:00 ET kickoff, it's unclear if he'd be up for his usual workload. With that in mind, if Mixon is limited at all or ultimately ends up being out, Samaje Perine and Chris Evans would be in line for added backfield work for the Bengals in Week 5.
Oct 8, 2021
Officially listed as questionable
Mixon (ankle) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Packers after being listed as a non-participant at practice this past week.
ANALYSIS
Despite Mixon's string of DNPs this week, the Bengals plan to evaluate the running back Saturday before determining his status for Sunday's contest,Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports. It remains to be seen if that decision is promptly announced by the team, but either way, Mixon's Week 5 status will be confirmed prior to the first wave of games Sunday, with Cincinnati kicking off at 1:00 ET. If Mixon ends up limited or out for the contest, Samaje Perine would be in line to see added carries, while Chris Evans would likely see expanded third-down/change-of-pace duties.
Oct 8, 2021
Week 5 status TBD
The Bengals plan to evaluate Mixon (ankle) Saturday and then determine the running back's status for Sunday's game against the Packers, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Based on that, we expect the team to list Mixon as questionable on Friday's upcoming injury report, but it's possible that he could be subsequently downgraded in advance of Sunday's kickoff. If Mixon ends up limited or out versus Green Bay, Samaje Perine would be in line to see added carries for the Bengals, with Chris Evans likely to see an expanded third-down role.
Oct 8, 2021
Not spotted at Friday's practice
Mixon (ankle) wasn't seen at the early portion of Friday's practice, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It appears Mixon will sit out practice for the third consecutive day due to the ankle sprain, making it difficult to see him being available for Sunday's matchup with the Packers. Samaje Perine should take over the starting role with Chris Evans handling the third-down role should Mixon be officially ruled out.
Oct 7, 2021
Misses another practice
Mixon (ankle) didn't practice Thursday, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With back-to-back absences to start the practice week, Mixon will need to get back on the field Friday in order to have a chance to suit up Sunday against the Packers. If he ends up limited or out this weekend, Baby notes that Samaje Perine would be in line to see added carries, with Chris Evans a candidate to see an expanded third-down role.
Oct 6, 2021
Sits out practice
Mixon (ankle) didn't practice Wednesday, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that the running back did spend some time off to the side on a stationary bike Wednesday. Meanwhile, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer relays that coach Zac Taylor believes Mixon will be worked back into the mix as the week goes on. With that in mind, Taylor noted that he needs to see Mixon log some game-speed reps at practice in order to determine whether or not playing him Sunday versus Green Bay is an option. Samaje Perine is next up for added touches in the Bengals' offense if Mixon is limited or out this weekend.
Oct 4, 2021
Deemed day-to-day
Head coach Zac Taylor said Monday that the Bengals are viewing Mixon's low-grade ankle sprain as more of a day-to-day concern than a week-to-week one, Jay Morrison of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported earlier Monday that Mixon was considered week-to-week after exiting Thursday's win over the Jaguars, but Taylor talked about the running back's injury in more optimistic terms when he met with the media. Taylor added that Mixon's sprained ankle has no relation to the foot injury that sidelined the 25-year-old for the final 10 games of the 2021 campaign, so Mixon looks like he may have a shot to suit up this Sunday against the Packers. Before reaching a decision on Mixon's status, the Bengals will see what he's able to do in practices Wednesday through Friday.
Oct 4, 2021
Labeled week-to-week
Mixon (ankle) is nursing a low-grade sprain and considered week-to-week, Adam Schefter of ESPNSchefter reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bengals' coaching staff hasn't yet ruled Mixon out for Week 5, but at this point it looks like the workhorse running back will be forced to spend some time on the sideline. Coach Zac Taylor said after Thursday's win over the Jaguars that he believed Mixon's injury to be minor, so if the team estimates he could return after only missing one or two games, a stint on IR might be avoided. Samaje Perine appears destined for a larger role while Mixon gets healthy, as does rookie fifth-round pick Chris Evans. Perine could be the primary recipient of carries, while Evans handles more passing-down reps.
Oct 1, 2021
Injures ankle late Thursday
Mixon rushed 16 times for 67 yards and a touchdown while catching one of two targets for no gain in Thursday's 24-21 win over the Jaguars. He spent the Bengals' final few offensive plays on the sidelines with what coach Zac Taylor deemed a minor ankle injury, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Taylor used the word "minor" to describe the injury, so it sounds like Mixon should have a chance to suit up against the Packers in Week 5, especially since he'll have 10 days to heal up. Nonetheless, the injury-prone running back will likely show up on the injury report when the Bengals resume practicing, and Samaje Perine -- who had three carries for seven yards and a 15-yard catch Thursday -- could be in line for a bigger role in the event Mixon's injury ends up more serious than is being let on. Prior to exiting, Mixon found the end zone from one yard out in the third quarter for his second touchdown of the season.
Sep 26, 2021
Just short of century mark in win
Mixon rushed 18 times for 90 yards and caught his only target for four yards in Sunday's 24-10 win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Mixon has 73 touches through three weeks and is racking up plenty of yardage as one of the league's few three-down running backs. All three of Cincinnati's touchdowns in this one were caught by wide receivers, as Mixon's lone trip to the end zone through three weeks came back in Week 1. He'll have a nice opportunity to end his touchdown drought at two games in Week 4, as the 0-3 Jaguars will be in town for Thursday Night Football.
Sep 19, 2021
Garners 21 touches Week 2
Mixon notched 20 carries for 69 yards and one catch (on one target) for two yards during Sunday's 20-17 loss at Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Mixon led the NFL in rushing after Week 1, with his 127 yards 19 ahead of second place David Montgomery. But Mixon faced a much tougher defensive front in the Bears this time around, averaging a shade under 3.5 yards after managing 4.4 YPC against the Vikings in the season opener. After ceding five rushes to reserve running back Samaje Perine in Week 1, however, Mixon handled every single carry for the Bengals on Sunday, indicating his bell-cow status in this backfield. Mixon may have a difficult time again next Sunday against the rough and tumble Steelers on the road.
Sep 12, 2021
Totals 150 yards, TD in busy opener
Mixon rushed 29 times for 127 times and a touchdown while catching all four of his targets for 23 yards in Sunday's 27-24 overtime win over the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Mixon needed some attention at the training table in the first half, per
Aug 21, 2021
Gets two touches
Mixon recorded two rushes for four yards in Friday's preseason game against Washington.
ANALYSIS
Mixon appeared to have a 17-yard reception on the team's first offensive play of the game, though that was canceled out by a holding call. Instead, he was limited to only two rushes and has only three carries in two preseason games. Of course, that's fine for the time being, as Mixon figures to carry a heavy workload once the regular season begins against Minnesota on Sept. 12.
Sep 1, 2020
Signs extension
Mixon (head) and the Bengals have reached agreement on a four-year contract extension, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports the contract is worth $48 million over four years, keeping the 2017 second-round pick under team control through 2024. With that out of the way, Mixon won't have any issue taking on a large workload this season, hoping to pick up where he left off over the second half of last year. Migraines have kept him out of practice for more than a week now, but he has made some appearances as an observer from the sidelines.
Aug 30, 2020
Labeled day-to-day
Coach Zac Taylor said Sunday that Mixon (migraine) is day-to-day. Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon has not practiced since Monday while dealing with migraines, and he also sat out Sunday's scrimmage. He was at least present on the sidelines Sunday, which could be considered a step in the right direction given that he was completely absent earlier in the week.
Aug 30, 2020
Still not practicing
Mixon (migraine) is still out for Sunday's scrimmage, but was present on the sidelines, James Rapien of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Earlier in the week coach Zac Taylor affirmed that he believed Mixon's absence was legit, and not contract-related. Mixon previously hadn't been on the sidelines earlier in the week, so his physical presence Sunday can be construed as a positive.
Aug 28, 2020
Misses practice again
Mixon (head) is absent from practice Friday, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was present but not participating at the beginning of the week, and this now makes three straight days where he's been absent altogether. The running back is dealing with migraines, a health issue that hadn't previously been reported during his football career. There was speculation his absences might be related to contract negotiations, but there hasn't been any hard evidence to support that idea. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported Thursday that discussing are ongoing between the Bengals and Mixon's agent.
Aug 27, 2020
Dealing with migraines
Mixon has been absent from practice due to migraines, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon was an observer at practice Monday and Tuesday, while he wasn't spotted at all during Wednesday's session. The absence led to some speculation about his contract situation, which Pelissero says is still a work in progress, with negotiations between the Bengals and Mixon's agent ongoing. In any case, it seems the running back's absence from practice this week is the product of a health issue rather than dissatisfaction with his contract. We've seen a few NFL players over the years struggle with migraines -- including Sterling Shepard and Percy Harvin -- but this is the first instance on record of Mixon being bothered by migraines.
Aug 26, 2020
Not practicing
Mixon (undisclosed) wasn't spotted at practice Wednesday, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Dehner also relays that he was told by the team Monday that Mixon had a "minor" injury. Assuming that's the case, the Week 1 availability of the Bengals' top back don't appear to be in danger.
Aug 24, 2020
Misses practice Monday
A minor unspecified injury was cited as the reason for Mixon missing practice Monday, Jay Morrison of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
We'll look for coach Zac Taylor to address Mixon's situation when he addresses the media Tuesday, but for now this doesn't appear to be a concerning issue so we'll consider the Bengals' top running back day-to-day.
May 9, 2020
Long-term deal possible
While there haven't been any signs of progress in negotiations, Bengals Director of Player Personnel Duke Tobin said that the organization desires to sign Mixon to a long-term deal, Chris Roling of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
The initial conventional wisdom was that a deal with Mixon would have to wait until the Bengals resolved A.J. Green's long-term contract situation, but that might not necessarily be the case.
Apr 15, 2020
Potential holdout
The Bengals and Mixon haven't yet agreed on a contract extension, and while there haven't been any reports of acrimony, a holdout remains a possibility, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon is set to become a free agent after this season, though obviously the Bengals have the recourse of a franchise tag available. Christian McCaffrey's recent new contract will be mentioned as part of the conversation, though the Bengals are hardly known for their willingness to throw big money at a player. Mixon's status becomes more pressing now with the draft just around the corner.
Dec 19, 2019
Added to injury report Thursday
Mixon was a limited participant in Thursday's practice due to a calf injury, Tyler Dragon of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon didn't appear on the Bengals' first Week 16 injury report that was issued Wednesday, so his limitations Thursday could signal that the running back picked up the calf issue midway through practice. More clarity on Mixon's situation should arrive during the Bengals' final practice of the week Friday, but Giovani Bernard is the next man up out of the backfield in the event Mixon is sidelined for Sunday's game in Miami or is limited during the contest.
Sep 15, 2019
Good to go for Sunday
Mixon (ankle) is active for Sunday's game against the 49ers, Jay Morrison of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon only managed one limited practice as part of his Week 2 regimen while he managed the sprained right ankle, but the injury wont keep him out of commission for Sunday. While Mixon is likely in line to draw the start, the Bengals could choose to manage his workload carefully if the ankle is at all inhibiting him during the contest. If Mixon is restricted, Giovani Bernard would be in store for increased work both in the run game and on passing downs.
Sep 15, 2019
Trending toward suiting up
Mixon (ankle) took part in Saturday's team walk-through and the Bengals are optimistic he can play Sunday against the 49ers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon's sprained right ankle prevented him from taking part in most of the Bengals' practices this week, but he'll get the green light to play Week 2 if he can make it through warmups Sunday without major issue. The 23-year-old's gameday status won't be formally established until the Bengals release their inactive list 90 minutes before the 1:00 p.m. EDT kickoff, but the expectation is that Mixon will draw the start for Cincinnati out of the backfield.
Sep 15, 2019
Expected to play
Mixon (ankle) is expected to play in Sunday's contest against the 49ers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon will test out his ankle tomorrow morning in team warmups but it sounds like he intends on playing. He is coming off a season opener in which he only managed to record 10 rushing yards on six carries before having to exit the contest due to the ankle injury. It's also worth noting he missed the first two days of practice this week. If he does suit up, there's no telling how cautious the coaching staff will be with his reps.
Sep 13, 2019
Listed as questionable this week
Mixon (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the 49ers after logging a limited practice Friday, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Fortunately for those considering Mixon in Week 2 lineups, the Bengals kick off at 1:00 ET this weekend. If he ends up limited at all Sunday, or is deemed inactive, Giovani Bernard would see increased touches out of the team's backfield, but Mixon's return to practice -- albeit in a limited capacity -- opens the door to the possibility of him toughing it out through his ankle issue, at home versus San Francisco.
Sep 13, 2019
Participating in walkthrough Friday
Mixon (ankle) is taking part in Friday's walkthrough, Tyler Dragon of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old was held out the first two practices of the week after spraining his right ankle in the season opener, so him participating in Friday's session -- even if it's just a walkthrough -- is a positive sign. Mixon's status for Week 2 should receive additional clarity when the official injury report is released later in the day.
Sep 12, 2019
Still not practicing
Mixon (ankle) was held out of Thursday's practice, Tyler Dragon of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon emerged from Week 1 with a right ankle injury, and after an MRI came back clean, he was deemed "day-to-day" by coach Zac Taylor. That said, Mixon has yet to take the practice field this week, leaving him with one session to get in some reps before Sunday's game against the 49ers. If Mixon is unable to go, Giovani Bernard will lead the Bengals' backfield.
Sep 11, 2019
No practice Wednesday
Mixon (ankle) did not participate in Wednesday's practice, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon said that his ankle is feeling better, according to Tyler Dragon of The Cincinnati Enquirer, but he remains day-to-day due to an injury suffered against the Seahawks in Week 1. The Bengals hope to have Mixon available for Sunday's tilt against the 49ers, but if he ends up limited or ruled out expect Giovani Bernard to see an uptick in snaps, with Samaje Perine on deck as well.
Sep 11, 2019
Ankle improving
Mixon noted Wednesday that his ankle is feeling better, Tyler Dragon of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon added that he's hopeful he'll be able play on Sunday against the 49ers, but such an outcome is far from a lock. We'll circle back later Wednesday to see if the running back participates in practice and if so, note his level of participation.
Sep 9, 2019
Considered day to day
Coach Zac Taylor said he views Mixon (ankle) as day-to-day, Marisa Contipelli of the Bengals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon got good news from Monday's MRI, confirming his ankle sprain isn't too severe. The Bengals hope to have him ready for Week 2 against the 49ers, following an early exit from the season opener in Seattle. Giovani Bernard is the next man up in Cincinnati's backfield, followed by recent acquisition Samaje Perine.
Sep 9, 2019
Could play in Week 2
MRI results on Mixon's ankle came back "all good" and the running back may have a shot to play Sunday against the 49ers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
In any case, Mixon is not expected to require an extended absence. If he ends up out, or limited in Week 2, however, Giovani Bernard would be in line to see added work, with Samaje Perine on hand as well.
Sep 8, 2019
Exits game with ankle injury
Mixon was forced out of Sunday's game against the Seahawks with a right ankle injury, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his exit, Mixon had logged six carries for 10 yards. Next up in the team's backfield through the course of any action he misses, is Giovani Bernard.
