Moving to Windy City
The Browns traded Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round pick to the Bears for a sixth-round pick Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
A 2021 first-round pick, Tryon-Shoyinka joined forces with Cleveland in free agency in the offseason, but he found it difficult to break into a deep D-line, logging just 31 defensive snaps (and nine tackles) in eight appearances with the team. Chicago lost Dayo Odeyingbo to a torn Achilles in Week 9, so the addition of Tryon-Shoyinka is a step to help fortify its pass rush. Tryon-Shoyinka has 15.0 sacks across 74 career regular-season games between the Buccaneers and Browns.
Oct 19, 2025
Active for Week 7
Tryon-Shoyinka (hip) is active for Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka sustained a hip injury during last week's loss to the Browns. He logged consecutive limited practice sessions to start Week 7 prep, finished as a full participant Friday and has received the green light to suit up Sunday. Tryon-Shoyinka has appeared in all six of Cleveland's games this season, recording eight total tackles while primarily contributing on special teams.
Oct 17, 2025
Could return Sunday
Tryon-Shoyinka (hip) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Dolphins, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2021 first-round pick from Washington sustained a hip injury in the Browns' Week 6 loss to the Steelers, but after logging consecutive limited practice sessions, he's got a chance to play Sunday. Tryon-Shoyinka has appeared in all six of Cleveland's games this season, recording eight total tackles while primarily contributing on special teams. If he's unable to suit up for the Week 7 matchup, expect Cameron Thomas to operate as one of the Browns' top reserve defensive ends.
Oct 12, 2025
Out with hip injury
Tryon-Shoyinka won't return to Sunday's game against the Steelers due to a hip injury.
ANALYSIS
The 2021 first-round pick sustained a hip injury at some point in the third quarter and was quickly ruled out shortly after heading to the locker room. He logged two tackles and one quarterback hit prior to his departure.
Mar 11, 2025
Landing in Cleveland
Tryon-Shoyinka is in line to ink with the Browns on a one-year, $4.75 million contract, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
A 2021 first-round pick, Tryon-Shoyinka saw his snap count reduce in each of his final two seasons with Tampa Bay, culminating in a career-low 24 tackles (15 solo), including 2.0 sacks, across 15 regular-season appearances in 2024. He also had two passes defensed and one forced fumble. Now, a one-year deal with Cleveland will provide Tryon-Shoyinka a chance to prove himself and potentially rebound before hitting free agency again in 2026.
Jan 24, 2025
Poor showing in contract year
Tryon-Shoyinka finished the 2024 season with 24 tackles (15 solo), including 2.0 sacks, two defensed passes and one fumble recovery across 15 games.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka saw a snap reduction for the second consecutive season, but in only two fewer games and 41 fewer snaps than 2023, the 2021 first-round pick generated 21 fewer tackles, including three fewer sacks. It was a particularly ill-timed down year for Tryon-Shoyinka, who's slated to hit the open market when the new league year begins March 12 and will almost certainly be allowed to shop his services to other teams.
Dec 17, 2024
Five tackles in return
Tryon-Shoyinka posted five tackles (four solo) in the Buccaneers' 40-17 win over the Chargers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka generated a solid performance in his return from a two-game absence due to an ankle injury. The fourth-year edge rusher's tackle total was a new season high, but Tryon-Shoyinka remains a middling IDP option with a modest 23 tackles (14 solo), including 2.0 sacks, two passes defensed and one forced fumble across 12 regular-season games.
Dec 15, 2024
Will play versus Chargers
Tryon-Shoyinka (ankle) was listed as active ahead of Sunday's game against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka missed the last two contests with an ankle sprain that he suffered Week 12 versus the Giants. The 25-year-old will now return and reprise his role as one of Tampa Bay's starting outside linebackers. Across 11 appearances this season, Tryon-Shoyinka has logged 1 tackles and two sacks.
Dec 13, 2024
Officially questionable for Sunday
Tryon-Shoyinka has been deemed questionable to play Sunday versus the Chargers, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka hasn't played since injuring his ankle Week 12 against the Giants. He was able to log a trio of full practices this week, however, which has given him a chance of returning to action Sunday. If Tryon-Shoyinka is able to suit up against Los Angeles, Jose Ramirez could see the small amount of snaps he's been getting the past two weeks dry up.
Dec 11, 2024
Appears on track for return
Tryon-Shoyinka (ankle) was estimated as a full participant in Wednesday's practice walkthrough, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka suffered an ankle sprain Week 12 against the Giants and missed the Week 13 contest versus Carolina. He came close to returning to action this past Sunday versus the Raiders after logging a full practice to end the week, but he was ultimately held out of action. However, with Tryon-Shoyinka deemed a full practice participant Wednesday, it seems likely that he'll be able to play Sunday against the Chargers.
Dec 7, 2024
Won't play vs. Las Vegas
Tryon-Shoyinka (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Raiders, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite logging a full practice Friday, Tryon-Shoyinka will be sidelined for a second straight game due to a high-ankle sprain he suffered in Week 12 against the Giants. Anthony Nelson and Chris Braswell are the top candidates to start at outside linebacker Sunday opposite Yaya Diaby due to Tryon-Shoyinka's injury.
Dec 6, 2024
Could return for Week 14
Tryon-Shoyinka (ankle) was a full participant in Friday's practice and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka was sidelined for Week 13 against the Panthers due to a high-ankle sprain he suffered against the Giants in Week 12. He was able to finish the week strong with a full practice Friday, and he appears to be on track to play Sunday. Tryon-Shoyinka has logged 18 tackles (10 solo), including 2.0 sacks, two pass defenses and one forced fumble across 11 regular-season games.
Nov 30, 2024
Ruled out for Week 13
Tryon-Shoyinka (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Panthers, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka was able to log consecutive limited practices to end the week, but he earned the doubtful tag following Friday's session. Now that he's been ruled out, Tryon-Shoyinka will shift his focus on returning for Week 14 against the Raiders on Sunday, Dec. 8. Chris Braswell and Anthony Nelson (personal) are the top candidates to start at outside linebacker alongside Yaya Diaby for Sunday's game due to Tryon-Shoyinka's injury.
Nov 29, 2024
Unlikely to play Week 13
Tryon-Shoyinka (ankle) is doubtful to suit up Sunday against Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka sprained his ankle in the second quarter against the Giants last Sunday and didn't return. He managed a DNP/LP/LP practice progression this week, but his designation of doubtful suggests that he's unlikely to play Sunday. If Tryon-Shoyinka does sit out, Chris Braswell and/or Anthony Nelson (personal) could soak up his defensive snaps.
Nov 25, 2024
Dealing with sprained ankle
Tryon-Shoyinka sustained a sprained ankle during Sunday's game against the Giants, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka was forced out of the Buccaneers' contest in Week 12 early by an ankle injury, which coach Todd Bowles confirmed Monday to be a sprain. Its severity still hasn't been disclosed at this point, so Tryon-Shoyinka's name will be one to watch for when Tampa Bay releases its first official practice report of the week Wednesday.
Nov 24, 2024
Downgraded to out
Tryon-Shoyinka (ankle) has been downgraded to out for the rest of Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The linebacker suffered the ankle injury in the second quarter and was originally listed as questionable. Tryon-Shoyinka made one solo tackle before exiting. Chris Braswell and Anthony Nelson are the next men up at outside linebacker.
Nov 24, 2024
Leaves game due to ankle injury
Tryon-Shoyinka (ankle) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Giants, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter of Sunday's game. Chris Braswell and Anthony Nelson will pick up additional snaps at outside linebacker for as long as Tryon-Shoyinka is sidelined.
Sep 9, 2024
Records sack in win
Tryon-Shoyinka recorded a sack in Tampa Bay's 37-20 win over the Commanders on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The starting outside linebacker finished with two tackles in total. Tryon-Shoyinka made a career-high 45 tackles, including 5.0 sacks, for the Buccaneers during the 2023 regular season.
Sep 4, 2024
Full participant in practice
Tron-Shoyinka (shoulder) practiced in full during Wednesday's session.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka has been dealing with a shoulder sprain since early August, which kept him out of the Bucs' three preseason games. Now that he's healthy, the 2021 first-round pick will serve as Tampa Bay's starting outside linebacker opposite Yaya Diaby. Tryon-Shoyinka finished the 2023 regular season with 45 tackles (28 solo), including a career-high 5.0 sacks, across 17 games.
Aug 3, 2024
Dealing with sprain
Tryon-Shoyinka missed Saturday's practice due to a shoulder sprain, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Laine adds that the injury is not believed to be serious, so Tryon-Shoyinka could conceivably be back on the practice field following Sunday's team off day. The versatile fourth-year pro did not have his fifth-year option picked up this offseason, so he's facing a pivotal season in which he should once again fill a versatile role that includes pass rushing and dropping into coverage against running backs and tight ends.
May 1, 2024
Option goes unexercised
Tryon-Shoyinka will not have his fifth-year option picked up by the Buccaneers, Luke Easterling of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka will now enter the 2024 season in the final year of his rookie contract. Although it hasn't been all bad for the Washington product, he has yet to live up to the expectations of being the team's first-round selection in the 2021 Draft. However, he did post career highs with 45 combined tackles and five sacks last season, despite playing 250 fewer defensive snaps than he did in 2022.
Feb 6, 2024
Solid but unspectacular '23
Tryon-Shoyinka recorded 45 tackles (28 solo), including 5.0 sacks, a pass defensed, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery across 17 regular-season games in 2023. He added four stops (two solo) in two postseason contests.
ANALYSIS
The 2021 first-round pick did set new career highs in tackles and sacks while forcing and recording the first turnovers of his first three seasons. However, Tryon-Shoyinka still struggled with consistency in terms of getting to the quarterback, recording only two sacks after Week 6 despite remaining healthy throughout the campaign. Tryon-Shoyinka also posted four or fewer tackles in 18 of 19 total games, and he saw third-round rookie YaYa Diaby outperform him and eventually take over the starting left outside linebacker role. Tryon-Shoyinka has one year remaining on his rookie contract, and considering his experience in Todd Bowles' defensive system, he should play a solid rotational role, at minimum, in 2024.
Oct 17, 2023
Tallies third sack in Week 6 loss
Tryon-Shoyinka recorded four tackles (three solo), including a sack, and also defensed a pass in the Buccaneers' 20-6 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka snapped a two-game sackless streak with a second-quarter takedown of Jared Goff. Tryon-Shoyinka's four tackles also tied a season high, but the third-year linebacker is yet to truly live up to his pedigree as a 2021 first-round pick despite Todd Bowles' aggressive scheme setting its linebackers up for plenty of pass-rushing opportunities.
Sep 19, 2023
Pair of sacks in Week 2 win
Tryon-Shoyinka posted four tackles, including two sacks, and logged an additional quarterback hit in the Buccaneers' 27-17 win over the Bears on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The third-year edge rusher recorded the second multi-sack game of his career, with the first having come way back in Week 4 of his rookie 2021 campaign. Tryon-Shoyinka has struggled to fully live up to his first-round pedigree over his first pair of seasons, but he was expected to take a big step forward in 2023 after an impressive training camp. While his momentum didn't carry over into the regular-season opener -- Tryon-Shoyinka posted just two total tackles in that win over the Vikings -- perhaps his effort against the Bears will serve as a launchpad for a surge in production.
Aug 1, 2023
Showing off edge-rushing skills
Tryon-Shoyinka stood out in Monday's pass-rush drills, Brianna Dix of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2021 first-round pick has amassed four sacks apiece in each of his first two seasons, but the Buccaneers are banking on a significant step forward from the edge-rushing linebacker in 2023. Tryon-Shoyinka offered reason for optimism in that regard Monday, with Dix noting the Washington product put on a nifty inside-outside move that gave him a free path to a sack. Tryon-Shoyinka has continued to hone in on his technique throughout the offseason and continues to display excellent burst off the edge, traits that could lead to career-best numbers in 2023.
Jan 24, 2023
Ups production in second season
Tryon-Shoyinka posted 40 tackles (23 solo), including four sacks, and defensed two passes across 17 games during the 2022 regular season.
ANALYSIS
The 2021 first-round pick also tallied two tackles (one solo) in 41 snaps during the wild-card loss to the Cowboys. Tryon-Shoyinka played a career-high 806 snaps on defense during the regular season, which led to him boosting his rookie-season tackle total by 11 stops and matching his 2021 sack tally as well. Tryon-Shoyinka could be in line for even more opportunity next season if position mate Lavonte David departs via free agency.
Jan 3, 2023
Career outing Sunday
Tryon-Shoyinka recorded seven solo tackles during Sunday's 30-24 victory versus Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka recorded a career high in tackles while also logging more than four stops for the first time this season Week 17. The second-year linebacker opened the season in a rotational role at edge rusher, though he has now played all but one defensive snap with Genard Avery (abdomen) and Shaquil Barrett (Achilles) both on IR over the past three weeks. With the NFC South now officially locked up, it's possible Tryon-Shoyinka could play decreased snaps if Tampa Bay decides to rest some starters Week 18 against Atlanta.
Dec 18, 2022
Good to go Sunday
Tryon-Shoyinka (hip) is active for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka will be available to start at linebacker in Sunday's contest versus Cincinnati, after he dealt with a hip issue throughout the week. With both Carl Nassib (pectoral) and Genard Avery (abdomen) ruled out this weekend, the 2021 first-rounder will likely be called upon to handle more snaps than this usual workload.
Dec 16, 2022
Iffy for Sunday
Tryon-Shoyinka (hip) is questionable for Sunday's matchup against the Bengals, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka submitted a full practice Friday after being limited Wednesday and Thursday due to a hip injury he sustained in Tampa Bay's Week 14 blowout win over the 49ers, but he's still considered questionable for Week 15. The second-year pass rusher has yet to miss a game this season, totaling 25 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one pass defense.
Dec 14, 2022
Limited at practice Wednesday
Tryon-Shoyinka (hip) was a limited participant at Wednesday's practice, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka sustained a hip injury during the team's Week 14 blowout loss to the 49ers and didn't return. His participation at practice, albeit in a limited fashion, Wednesday is encouraging, but he'll likely have to log at least one full session to avoid an injury designation for Sunday's matchup against the Bengals.
Dec 11, 2022
Sustains hip injury
Tryon-Shoyinka sustained a hip injury during Sunday's loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka was considered questionable to return to Sunday's matchup, and he didn't return to the blowout loss. It's unclear whether he'll be available for next Sunday's game against the Bengals.
Nov 16, 2022
Gets to quarterback in win
Tryon-Shoyinka posted two solo tackles, including one sack, during the Buccaneers' 21-16 win over the Seahawks in Week 10.
ANALYSIS
The second-year edge rusher was able to push his season total to 3.5 sacks -- just a half-sack away from tying the four he garnered in his 2021 rookie campaign -- with his second QB takedown in the last three contests. Tryon-Shoyinka logged over 40 snaps for the third straight game as well, but he's still posted three stops or less in all but the Week 2 contest versus the Saints (four tackles).
Nov 1, 2022
Records sack in Week 8 loss
Tryon-Shoyinka recorded three tackles (two solo), including a sack, during the Buccaneers' 27-22 loss to the Ravens in Week 8.
ANALYSIS
The second-year linebacker logged a solid 45 snaps and was able to record his second full sack of the campaign. Tryon-Shoyinka also tied his second-highest tackle total of the season in the loss, but his relatively modest production -- 18 tackles, 2.5 sacks -- despite an average of 44 snaps per contest mostly keeps him off the IDP radar.
Oct 13, 2022
Gets first full sack in Week 5
Tryon-Shoyinka tallied two tackles (one solo), including one sack, during the Buccaneers' 21-15 win over the Falcons in Week 5.
ANALYSIS
Tryon-Shoyinka came into the season with elevated expectations after recording four sacks alongside 29 tackles in a rotational role over 17 games as a rookie in 2021. While his start hasn't been poor statistically -- he's recorded 11 tackles overa when including his production against Atlanta -- his takedown of Marcus Mariota was his first full sack after being credited with a half-sack versus the Saints in Week 2.
Jul 29, 2022
Set for big Year 2 leap
Tryon-Shoyinka is expected to hold down a starting job as a prototypical 3-4 defensive end/outside linebacker this season after filling a variety of roles as a rookie in 2021, Brianna Dix of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2021 first-round pick logged 536 snaps from scrimmage as a rookie while serving as an edge rusher, playing a three-technique spot and also dropping into coverage on occasion. Dix notes Tryon-Shoyinka will now be entrusted with a starting role following the team's decision to not re-sign Jason Pierre-Paul, and the athletic second-year pro has already been validating that decision early in camp by flashing his impressive pass-rushing skills that helped him record four sacks as a rookie.
Jan 5, 2022
Ties career high in tackles
Tryon-Shoyinka posted four tackles (three solo) across 53 snaps in the Buccaneers' 28-24 win over the Jets in Week 17.
ANALYSIS
The rookie drew another start for Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) and turned in a markedly better performance than Week 16, when he was blanked across the stat sheet on 51 snaps versus the Panthers. Tryon-Shoyinka's tackle tally matched a career high just established Week 15 against the Saints, and he could be in for one more turn with the starters in the regular-season finale against Carolina.
Dec 26, 2021
Filling in for Pierre-Paul
Tryon-Shoyinka is expected to start at outside linebacker Sunday against the Panthers with Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) ruled out ahead of the contest, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The last time he started in place of an injured Pierre-Paul in Week 4 against the Patriots, Tryon-Shoyinka stepped up and notched a pair of sacks. He probably can't be expected to replicate that performance, but the rookie first-round pick has shown enough promise as a pass rusher this season that the dropoff from Pierre-Paul to him shouldn't be too steep.
Oct 5, 2021
Records pair of sacks in win
Tryon-Shoyinka posted two tackles -- both sacks -- and was credited with four quarterback hits overall in the Buccaneers' 19-17 win over the Patriots on Sunday night.
ANALYSIS
The rookie saw extended playing time again with Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) sidelined a second straight game, logging 50 snaps (85 percent) overall. Tryon-Shoyinka certainly found a way to make an impact with his pair of stops, with the two takedowns of Mac Jones serving as the first pair of sacks of the first-round pick's young career. Tryon-Shoyinka is projected to return to a rotational role if Pierre-Paul is healthy enough to face the Dolphins in Week 5, but the sack opportunities could continue to manifest fairly consistently if he's used primarily on passing downs.
Sep 30, 2021
Modest numbers in first start
Tryon-Shoyinka drew the start in pace of Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder) in the Week 3 loss to the Rams and posted two solo tackles and a defensed pass across 51 snaps.
ANALYSIS
The rookie first-round pick ended up playing on 78 percent of the defensive snaps and logged another 10 on special teams, making it his busiest day as a pro yet. Tryon-Shoyinka has recorded a pair of tackles in each of his first three games, and with Pierre-Paul trending toward sitting out at least one more game, the 22-year-old is likely to draw a second straight start in the Week 4 showdown against the Patriots.
Sep 24, 2021
Set for first NFL start
Tryon-Shoyinka will make his first career start Sunday against the Rams in place of the injured Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder), Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Tampa Bay's rookie first-round pick will get his first starting opportunity after working as a reserve over the first two weeks. Tryon-Shoyinka racked up two tackles apiece in Weeks 1 and 2 while playing around a quarter of the Buccaneers' defensive snaps in each, but he's expected to play a significantly larger role for the duration of JPP's absence.
Jul 28, 2021
Already standing out
Tryon (knee) has practiced without restrictions and looked explosive over the first three practices of training camp, Carmen Vitali of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie linebacker underwent minor arthroscopic surgery in the offseason but was ready to go from Day 1 of training camp. Tryon has already caught the attention of former college teammate Vita Vea, who lauded his fellow Husky's explosiveness and athleticism in Tuesday's session. In addition to his considerable physical skills, Tryon will have the advantage of expert tutelage from the likes of fellow linebackers Lavonte David, Devin White, Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul as he gets his NFL bearings.
Jul 25, 2021
Likely to log heavy preseason work
Tryon (knee) is projected to log plenty of playing time in the preseason while auditioning to open the season as the primary rotational pass rusher off the bench Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie will ideally show enough to garner and then hold on to that role, a development that would serve to help keep the likes of Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul fresher throughout the season. Tryon underwent what was termed a "minor" arthroscopic knee procedure earlier this offseason, but he should have a good chance to open training camp without limitations.
May 14, 2021
Recovering from minor procedure
Coach Bruce Arians said Friday that Tryon (knee) is recovering from a "minor scope" undergone earlier this offseason, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Arians said that Tyron will rest until mandatory minicamp in June. At that time, the rookie first-round pick could be eased back into action. It doesn't appear that there's any real reason to worry about Tyron's availability for the start of the 2021 season.
