Jordan Akins Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Colts vs Jaguars game on Sunday with our National Football League injury report.Oct 13, 2025
Lands with Jacksonville
Akins signed with the Jaguars' practice squad Monday.
ANALYSIS
With Brenton Strange (quadriceps) and Quintin Morris (groin) ruled out for Week 7 against the Rams in London, Akins could be elevated to the gameday roster to join Hunter Long and Johnny Mundt at tight end for the Jaguars.
Jan 4, 2025
Fills in well again
Akins recorded six receptions on eight targets for 60 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 35-10 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Akins served as the Browns' starting tight end with David Njoku (knee) sidelined for the second consecutive week. He was one of the few bright spots in the offense, finishing second on the team in both targets and yards. Akins also accounted for Cleveland's only touchdown of the game with a 16-yard reception early in the fourth quarter. Overall, he's settled into a reliable backup tight end role and is set to enter free agency after spending the last two seasons with Cleveland.
Jan 2, 2025
Primed for another start
Akins is expected to serve as the Browns' starting tight end Saturday in Baltimore with David Njoku (knee) ruled out for the season finale, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
While Njoku was sidelined for last Sunday's 20-3 loss to the Dolphins, Akins saw an expanded profile on offense. He played 44 of the Browns' 79 snaps on offense in the loss, finishing with six catches for 49 yards on eight targets. Given that quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson (calf) dropped back a whopping 48 times in Week 17, Akins' eight targets could be more difficult to replicate in Week 18 if the heavily-favored Ravens are able to dominate the time of possession and keep the clock moving. Akins will also be working with a new starting quarterback in the finale, as Bailey Zappe is getting the nod over Thompson-Robinson.
Dec 29, 2024
Strong PPR output in loss
Akins brought in six of eight targets for 49 yards in Sunday's 20-3 loss to Miami.
ANALYSIS
Akins did a bang-up job filling in for injured starting tight end David Njoku (knee) in Sunday's loss to the Dolphins. The veteran backup finished with a season-high 49 yards while setting another season best in receptions (six). If Njoku is unable to suit up against the Jets next Sunday, then Akins would make a formidable PPR option in Week 18.
Dec 27, 2024
Set for expanded role
With David Njoku (knee) ruled out, Akins is expected to play an expanded offensive role Sunday against the Dolphins, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Njoku sidelined in Week 15, Akins narrowly out-snapped Blake Whiteheart 33 to 23, but it was Akins who ran 25 routes to Whiteheart's seven in the pass game. Akins turned four targets into a 3-30-0 receiving line as the Browns' second-leading receiver in that contest. Akins is merely a desperation fantasy play at the tight end position in Week 17.
Dec 15, 2024
Three catches sans Njoku
Akins secured three of four targets for 30 yards in the Browns' 21-7 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Akins was a distant second in receptions and receiving yards behind Jerry Jeudy on a day when the Browns were afflicted with mostly ineffective quarterback play. The veteran tight end did do a serviceable job while drawing the start in place of the absent David Njoku (hamstring), but Akins holds only modest fantasy value even if he remains in the top role for a Week 16 road matchup against the Bengals.
Dec 15, 2024
Likely to start at tight end
Akins is expected to start at tight end in Sunday's game against the Chiefs with David Njoku (hamstring) inactive for the contest, Kelsey Russo of the Browns' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins previously helped fill in for Njoku from Weeks 2 through 4 while the latter was sidelined with a high-ankle sprain and compiled a 6-49-0 receiving line on 10 targets over that span. While that level of production wasn't particularly noteworthy, all three of those outings came while Deshaun Watson (Achilles) served as the Browns' quarterback, so Akins could have a better opportunity to deliver fantasy value while Cleveland's passing attack has taken off under the stewardship of Jameis Winston. The Browns are also without a key receiver in Cedric Tillman (concussion), potentially leaving Akins as high as third in the pecking order for targets behind wideouts Jerry Jeudy and Elijah Moore.
Dec 3, 2024
Little impact in loss
Akins did not catch his lone target in Monday's 41-32 loss to Denver in Week 13.
ANALYSIS
Like many of Cleveland's receivers, Akins has experienced an uptick in activity and production with Jameis Winston at quarterback; however, he had a limited role Monday when Winston threw 58 times. Top tight end David Njoku had a team-high 17 targets Monday. Winston's not afraid to spread the targets around, so Akins, who averaged four targets over the three preceding games, could get some looks Week 14 against the Steelers.
Nov 22, 2024
Three catches in win
Akins caught three of four targets for 38 yards in Thursday's 24-19 win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Akins continued a renaissance in a Jameis Winston-led offense. The outing was his fourth in the last five games in which was targeted four times. The lone blemish Thursday was a drop on a play that looked like he had a clear path to the end zone if he secured the ball. David Njoku remains the clear No. 1 at tight end, but he had an off night in the wind and snow of Cleveland, holding to jus one of his five targets.
Nov 17, 2024
Four targets in loss
Akins caught one of four targets for 19 yards in Sunday's 35-14 loss to the Saints in Week 11.
ANALYSIS
Akins was caught up in an offense that finished with 47 passing attempts. It was the third consecutive week the Browns have aired it out more than 40 times and the second straight week with four targets for Akins, who has four red-zone targets this season. He's not about to challenge the team's top targets, but all that volume could lead to a red-zone score.
Nov 4, 2024
Three catches in loss
Akins caught three of four targets for 32 yards in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the Chargers in Week 9.
ANALYSIS
After a one-target performance a week ago, Akins saw a modest increase in attention Sunday. He was on the field for 25 snaps, the most since David Njoku returned from injury, but there's no reason to believe the increase is anything more than a random one-game blip. The loss dropped the Browns to 2-7 as they enter a bye week, and the club may start preparing and developing for 2025. The 32-year-old Akins, in the final year of his contract, is likely not part of the organization's future.
Oct 28, 2024
One target in win
Akins failed to catch his lone target in Sunday's 29-24 win over the Ravens in Week 8.
ANALYSIS
Akins, who played 15 snaps (22 percent share), had a bit role in Cleveland's first game following the season-ending Achilles injury suffered by quarterback Deshaun Watson. The tight end's usage had more to do with David Njoku being fully healthy than which quarterback is in the game, but Week 8 was a significant drop-off for Akins, who had four catches for 42 yards last week, including a 21-yard reception. Geoff Swaim, the other tight end competing for scraps behind Njoku, caught his lone target and was on the field for 21 snaps.
Oct 20, 2024
Four catches in loss
Akins caught all four targets for a season-high 42 yards in Sunday's 21-14 loss to the Bengals in Week 7.
ANALYSIS
Cleveland's tight ends had a big day in the first game after the organization traded Amari Cooper to the Bills. Akins and starter David Njoku combined for 18 targets, the most for the tight end position this season. In a related note that impacts all receivers, quarterbacks Deshaun Watson (Achilles') and Dorian Thompson-Robinson (finger) were removed from the game, leaving Jameis Winston to close out the contest. At this point, the Browns don't know who will be starting at quarterback next week against Baltimore.
Oct 14, 2024
Five snaps in loss
Akins was untargeted over five snaps in Sunday's 20-16 loss to Philadelphia in Week 6.
ANALYSIS
David Njoku finally stayed healthy for a full game, which was expected to limit Akins' involvement, but his severely reduced snap count was surprising. Geoff Swaim, a free agent that was added to the practice squad after Week 1, had the second-most snaps (19) behind Njoku's 42.
Oct 12, 2024
Resumes backup role
Akins will be the top backup in Sunday's game against the Eagles, as starter David Njoku (knee, ankle) no longer has an injury designation on the Browns injury report.
ANALYSIS
Njoku, who aggravated an ankle injury and sustained a knee injury last week and has yet to play a complete game in 2024, will resume his normal role as Cleveland's top tight end. When Njoku's been unavailable, Akins has been forced into a larger role, including that of the top tight end in three of five games thus far, and has led the team's tight ends in snaps in four of five games. Akins has 12 catches on 17 targets for 98 yards and a touchdown.
Oct 7, 2024
Grabs first TD since 2022
Akins caught three of three targets for 22 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 34-13 loss to the Commanders in Week 5.
ANALYSIS
Akins caught a 10-yard, garbage-time touchdown to finish out Cleveland's scoring, his first touchdown catch since 2022 when he was with the Texans. It was his first red-zone look of the season. As anticipated, Akins' playing time took a hit (20 snaps) with the return of starting tight end David Njoku, who was limited to 26 snaps, left the game with a knee injury, and is expected to undergo an MRI, per Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com.
Sep 30, 2024
Loses playing time Week 4
Akins caught one of two targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Raiders in Week 4.
ANALYSIS
Akins filled in for starter David Njoku (ankle) for a third consecutive game, but he was given the fewest number of snaps of those three contests. Blake Whiteheart (21 snaps) and Geoff Swaim (24) shared the load at tight end. Akins has nine receptions on 14 targets for 76 yards over the first four games.
Sep 27, 2024
Likely to start again in Week 4
Akins is expected to again operate as Cleveland's top tight end Sunday against the Raiders, as David Njoku (ankle) has been ruled out for a third consecutive game.
ANALYSIS
Akins set season-bests in last week's loss to the Giants, parlaying 67 percent of the offensive snaps into a 4-29-0 receiving line on seven targets. The veteran tight end has eight catches for 66 scoreless yards on 12 targets through three games but hasn't shown much of a ceiling for fantasy purposes. He looks like a touchdown-or-bust fantasy bet versus Las Vegas.
Sep 22, 2024
Four catches in Week 3 loss
Akins caught four of seven targets for 29 yards in Sunday's 21-15 loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Akins tied Jerry Jeudy for second on the team in targets, five behind Amari Cooper's team-leading 12. David Njoku (ankle) has missed Cleveland's last two games, but Akins has just 39 yards in two games while filling in atop the tight end depth chart. If Njoku's ready to return against the Raiders in Week 4, Akins would fade back into obscurity.
Sep 20, 2024
Set to remain starter Week 3
Akins is set to operate as Cleveland's top tight end again Sunday against the Giants, as David Njoku (ankle) has been ruled out for a second consecutive game.
ANALYSIS
Akins had just one target and actually handled a lower snap share (49 percent) in Njoku's absence Week 2 than he did in the season opener, when Njoku exited early and Akins proceeded to catch three of four targets for 27 yards while playing 57 percent of snaps on offense. Blake Whiteheart was elevated from the practice squad to provide depth behind Akins last week, and Whiteheart could be elevated again for Sunday's game.
Sep 16, 2024
Targeted once in win
Akins caught his lone target for 10 yards in Sunday's 18-13 win over Jacksonville in Week 2.
ANALYSIS
Akins drew the start at tight end with David Njoku (ankle) in week-to-week mode. The Browns elevated Blake Whiteheart from the practice squad for the game, and he played 24 snaps behind Akins (35 snaps), who has caught four of five targets for 37 yards through two weeks. While a healthy Njoku is a key part of the passing attack -- he was targeted five times before leaving Week 1's loss to the Cowboys -- Akins is not expected to see that level of targets while the No. 1 tight end is sidelined.
Sep 11, 2024
Set for TE1 duties Week 2
Akins is the only healthy tight end on the Browns' roster heading into Sunday's game against the Jaguars, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
David Njoku (ankle) is week-to-week after hurting his ankle in the 33-17 Week 1 loss to Dallas, and he has already been ruled out against Jacksonville. Akins filled in capably after Njoku got hurt, finishing the season opener with three catches for four targets on 27 yards. The Browns will likely elevate at least one of Geoff Swaim, Cameron Latu or Blake Whitehurst from the practice squad to provide depth behind Akins.
Sep 9, 2024
Snap leader at TE
Akins caught three of four targets for 27 yards and had a position-high 43 snaps in Sunday's 33-17 loss to the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
The Browns had just two tight ends rostered and were down to Akins when starter David Njoku (ankle) was taken off the field in the third quarter. Njoku will undergo tests Monday to determine the severity of the injury, the results of which could alter Akins' value moving forward. The Browns currently have two tight ends on the practice squad, Cameron Latu and Blake Whiteheart, neither of whom have significant NFL experience.
Aug 18, 2024
Two targets Saturday
Akins caught both of his targets for 15 yards in Saturday's preseason game against Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Akins has played the first quarters of both preseason games and caught all four targets (40 yards). He's expected to serve as the top backup to David Njoku, while Zaire Mitchell-Paden and Giovanni Ricci (knee) battle for the third spot.
Jan 14, 2024
Untargeted in playoff loss
Akins was not targeted while playing 16 of 71 offensive snaps in Saturday's 45-14 wild-card playoff loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Akins finished up a quiet first season with the Browns; he had fewer than two targets in 13 of 18 games. For the regular season, Akins caught 15 of 23 targets for 132 yards with zero touchdowns. He was signed to a two-year contract during the offseason, which made sense given his history with franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson (shoulder); however, he was never able to rekindle any of their on-field chemistry. Most of that was by design -- Cleveland had several other priority weapons on offense -- and part of that was the quarterback's gimpy shoulder. He's under contract for 2024 at a relatively affordable wage and could elevate to the primary backup to David Njoku, as Harrison Bryant will become an unrestricted free agent this coming offseason.
Dec 7, 2023
Nabs six-yard catch in loss
Akins played 12 of the Browns' 71 snaps on offense and recorded a six-yard reception on his lone target in Sunday's 36-19 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Akins technically drew a start Sunday after the Browns opened their first possession with a three-tight end set, but the 31-year-old still ranked comfortably behind David Njoku (59) and Harrison Bryant (31) in snaps on the day. While he spent the previous five seasons in Houston, Akins showed some occasional prowess as a pass catcher, but he's unlikely to produce splashy receiving lines in Cleveland so long as Njoku and Bryant are both available.
Nov 6, 2023
Season-high targets in win
Akins caught one of three targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 27-0 win over the Cardinals in Week 9.
ANALYSIS
The three targets were a season high for Akins, who along with Harrison Bryant, fight for scraps after David Njoku is fed. Akins was on offense for 19 snaps, his most since Week 1, but he remains third on the depth chart.
Oct 2, 2023
Two targets in loss
Akins caught one of two targets for six yards in Sunday's 28-3 loss to Baltimore in Week 4.
ANALYSIS
Akins has not seen much playing time through the first four weeks and is third on the tight end depth chart. Sunday's effort was the first time with multiple targets, but the game is not indicative of how the Browns view their offense. Cleveland was missing starting quarterback Deshaun Watson, which resulted in usage patterns being skewed and reduced production across the board. The Browns are off Week 5.
Sep 25, 2023
No targets in win
Akins played 13 snaps and was not targeted in Sunday's 27-3 win over the Titans in Week 3.
ANALYSIS
Other than a couple of catches over the first two weeks, Akins' reunion with quarterback Deshaun Watson has made little impact in the Browns' offense. After being on the field for 23 snaps (32 percent) in season opener, he's played a combined 22 snaps (14 percent) in Weeks 2 and 3.
Sep 19, 2023
Secures catch in loss
Akins caught his lone target for two yards in Monday's 26-22 loss to the Steelers in Week 2.
ANALYSIS
Thus far, Akins has not been a high-volume target for quarterback Deshaun Watson, his former quarterback when the pair were in Houston. The tight end's snap count dropped from 23 in Week 1 to nine in Week 2. The rosy offseason scenario, which painted Akins vaulting Harrison Bryant (26 snaps Monday) to become the No. 2 tight end and rekindle the chemistry he had with Watson, has not yet materialized.
Sep 11, 2023
Targeted once in win
Akins caught his lone target for 12 yards in Sunday's 24-3 win over Cincinnati in Week 1.
ANALYSIS
Akins was reunited with his former quarterback in Houston, Deshaun Watson, but it didn't lead to a big day for the tight end. Instead, it was Harrison Bryant (two catches, one TD, 27 snaps) getting more time on the field and targets than Akins. It's a long season and things could change. Cleveland threw the ball only 29 times on a rainy day more suited for running, but there is an expectation that Watson will do more with his arm when conditions are more favorable.
Aug 10, 2023
Practicing once again
Akins returned to practice earlier this week after missing time with a knee injury, Scott Petrak of BrownsZone.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins missed about a week while recovering from the injury, but he's been back at practice since at least Monday. The 31-year-old is working to earn the team's No. 2 tight-end role behind starter David Njoku.
Aug 1, 2023
Still dealing with injury
Akins (knee) is not practicing Tuesday, Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins has been out of action since Friday while he tends to the injury, and it's not clear how much more time he may miss. Once healthy, the 31-year-old is expected to compete for a role behind projected starter David Njoku.
Jul 30, 2023
Resting knee to start training camp
Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Sunday that Akins hasn't been practicing this week to rest his knee, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins missed a third straight day of practice Sunday while monitoring a knee injury. The severity of the issue remains unclear, but when healthy, Akins should compete with Harrison Bryant for playing time behind David Njoku. It's never good to miss valuable training camp snaps, but Akins' history with Deshaun Watson should give the tight end some leeway with his new squad.
Jul 29, 2023
Misses another day
Akins is not participating in Saturday's practice due to an apparent leg injury, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
This marks the second day Akins has been held out to start Browns training camp. The big-bodied target joined the team back in March, reuniting with former Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, and when healthy will likely push Harrison Bryant for playing time behind starter David Njoku.
Jul 20, 2023
Looking forward to new role
Akins anticipates a role in Cleveland greater than what he had in Houston the previous five seasons, Ashley Bostock of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. "In Houston, I was kind of labeled as a catch-and-run type in the flat," Akins said. "Here I'm more down the field."
ANALYSIS
Akins signed with the Browns during the offseason, and his history with quarterback Deshaun Watson when the two were Texans teammates was undoubtedly a factor. He wasn't a top target of Watson in Houston, but Akins achieved a level of success with the quarterback, catching 90 of 129 targets for 1,046 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons from 2018 to 2020. The tight end anticipates an expanded route tree in Cleveland and an opportunity to not be so one dimensional as a receiver. He'll compete with Harrison Bryant to backup lead tight end David Njoku.
May 26, 2023
Happily reunited with Watson
Akins was on the field for Cleveland's organized team activities this week, Anthony Poisal of the Browns' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins signed with the Browns during the offseason and acknowledged reuniting with quarterback Deshaun Watson as a reason. The two played three seasons together in Houston. The Browns spent a good amount of offseason focus on improving targets for Watson, and the 6-foot-6 Akins brings familiarity along with a red-zone threat. Akins is expected to back up David Njoku at tight end.
Mar 17, 2023
Links up with Browns
Akins is signing a two-year contract with the Browns, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
A 2018 third-round pick, Akins played 73 games for Houston the past five seasons, topping 400 yards three times without ever reaching 500. His 37-495-5 receiving line last year was a career-best effort, and he's now headed to Cleveland where he'll compete for backup snaps with Harrison Bryant. Given his lack of blocking prowess, Akins might be an insurance plan for David Njoku more so than the clear-cut No. 2 TE -- a role that tends to be more about run-blocking than catching passes.
Mar 17, 2023
Draws interest from Browns
Akins is slated to visit the Browns, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins is coming off a 2022 campaign with the Texans in which he tied his career high in catches (37), while recording season bests in receiving yards (495) and TDs (five). If the 2018 third-rounder signs with the Browns, he'll add depth to a Cleveland tight end corps led by returnees David Njoku and Harrison Bryant.
Jan 8, 2023
Plays hero in season finale
Akins secured four of eight targets for 70 yards and two touchdowns in the Texans' 32-31 win over the Colts on Sunday. He also caught a game-winning two-point conversion pass.
ANALYSIS
The journeyman tight end played the unlikely hero in an unlikely win, corralling a 28-yard touchdown grab on a 4th-and-20 heave from Davis Mills late in the fourth quarter and then securing the subsequent two-point conversion pass that proved the difference in the contest. Akins' Week 18 production allowed him to finish the 2022 campaign having tied his career high in receptions (37) and setting new personal bests in receiving yards (495) and touchdowns (five). The fifth-year pro played this season on a one-year contract, and given his ability to once again offer solid production as a pass catcher, Akins shouldn't have much trouble finding an NFL home in 2023.
Jan 1, 2023
Makes two receptions
Akins caught two passes for 38 yards on three targets against Jacksonville on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Akins has been productive on a per-snap basis in 2022, but he hasn't been able to scale up that production over a bigger workload. It's possible that Akins could do more if the Texans gave him more snaps, but (A) he might not be able to play more snaps and (B) the Texans also have OJ Howard (two targets Sunday) and Brevin Jordan (three targets) blocking the way for Akins to prove himself further.
Dec 26, 2022
Three grabs in win
Akins caught all three targets for 39 yards in Saturday's 19-14 win over the Titans in Week 16.
ANALYSIS
Akins continued his career renaissance with another three grabs, giving him 31 receptions and 387 yards for the season, tops among the team's tight ends. The 30-year-old was off the radar to start the season, but Akins has moved to the top of the depth chart since joining the active roster in Week 3. Houston's passing attack is unreliable, but with Nico Collins (foot) done for the season and Brandin Cooks dealing with injuries, Akins has averaged 4.4 targets and scored twice over the last five weeks. He leads all Houston pass-catchers with three TDs and is second with nine red-zone targets.
Dec 18, 2022
Gets into end zone Sunday
Akins brought in three of six targets for 22 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' 30-24 overtime loss to the Chiefs on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Akins recorded a 12-yard scoring grab late in the third quarter that gave the Texans a brief lead. The veteran tight end's touchdown was his third of the season, and he's now posted at least three receptions in three of the last four contests. Akins should continue to profile as an occasional red-zone threat during a Week 16 road matchup versus the Titans on Saturday afternoon.
Dec 5, 2022
TE target leader in loss
Akins caught three of six targets for 21 yards in Sunday's 27-14 loss to the Browns in Week 13.
ANALYSIS
Akins, who has been the tight end target leader for the last several games, was given competition for targets by Brevin Jordan (five targets), who had been a healthy inactive the previous three weeks. If Houston plans to have Jordan active going forward, Akins' opportunities could diminish.
Nov 27, 2022
Snaps TD drought
Akins caught five of five targets for a team-high 61 yards and a 25-yard touchdown catch in Sunday's 30-15 loss to Miami in Week 12.
ANALYSIS
Akins hauled in his first touchdown since Week 3 and had his fifth catch for more than 20 yards. It's looking like the benching of Brevin Jordan -- at three consecutive weeks and running -- is a permanent decision, so Akins should continue to see the bulk of targets at tight end.
Nov 21, 2022
Minimal impact in loss
Akins caught two of three targets for eight yards in Sunday's 23-10 loss to Washington in Week 11.
ANALYSIS
Akins and the rest of the receivers suffered from one of quarterback Davis Mills' worst games of the season. Houston had a total of five yards in the first half and 148 for the game. Akins has experienced a revival this season and leads the position group in yards, but Houston's offense is not geared to be a productive passing unit.
Nov 14, 2022
Visible again
Akins caught three of three targets for 72 yards in Sunday's 24-16 loss to the Giants in Week 10.
ANALYSIS
With Brevin Jordan a healthy inactive, Akins ramped up his production after a couple of invisible games. He was on the receiving end of Houston's longest play of the game, a 46-yard catch-and-run, which set up one of five Houston red-zone opportunities that did not lead to a touchdown. It's unknown how the Texans plan to use Jordan going forward, but it is a boost to Akins' value if it becomes long-term.
Nov 4, 2022
One target in loss
Akins did not catch his lone target in Thursday's 29-17 loss to the Eagles in Week 9.
ANALYSIS
For a second consecutive week, Akins was not heavily involved. He had a four-week stretch -- 10 catches, 154 yards, one touchdown -- that hinted at fantasy worth at a notoriously unproductive position. If there was a game where Houston tight ends could make a difference, it was Thursday when both Brandin Cooks (personal) and Nico Collins (groin) were unavailable, but it did not materialize for Akins.
Oct 31, 2022
Low output in loss
Akins caught one of two targets for five yards in Sunday's 17-10 loss to Tennessee in Week 8.
ANALYSIS
Akins was one of several skill-position players whose production was subdued on a day when the offense gained just 161 yards -- 71 before a final scoring drive against Titans' second-teamers. Akins had been a mini revelation, gaining 154 yards on 10 catches, including a touchdown, over the last four weeks, but without a credible running game, quarterback Davis Mills was unable to carry the offense.
Oct 24, 2022
Yardage leader Week 7
Akins caught three of four targets for a team-high 68 yards in Sunday's 38-20 loss to the Raiders in Week 7.
ANALYSIS
Akins continued his strong play at the tight end position and appears to bonded with quarterback Davis Mills. He was given an opportunity with Brevin Jordan sidelined the last three weeks and played himself from practice squad to the active roster. However, Jordan (four targets, 30 snaps) returned Sunday and led the position group in snaps and could eat into Akins' opportunities going forward.
Oct 12, 2022
Joining active roster
The Texan will sign Akins off the practice squad to their 53-man roster Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins, who has been active for three games this season, has recorded seven catches on eight targets for 86 yards and a touchdown in that span. With Brevin Jordan's (ankle) availability still up in the air for when the Texans return to action Week 7, Akins will give the team added tight end depth to go along with O.J. Howard.
Oct 10, 2022
Back on practice squad
Akins reverted to the Texans' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Akins was activated for the third game in a row with starting tight end Brevin Jordan (ankle) out again during Sunday's win over the Jaguars. While the 30-year-old tight end hauled in both of his targets for 22 yards, he saw his lowest playing time of the season -- 10 of Houston's 58 offensive snaps -- while filling in behind O.J. Howard (46 snaps) and Mason Schreck (24 snaps). Akins will now require a permanent spot on the active roster in order to suit up for the Texans again in 2022.
Oct 10, 2022
Has impact in win
Akins caught two of two targets for 22 yards in Sunday's 13-6 win over the Jaguars in Week 5.
ANALYSIS
Akins played just 12 snaps but once again made an impact for Houston. He was on the receiving end of a 3rd-and-10 catch-and-run that moved the chains on the Texans' game-deciding drive in the fourth quarter. This was the third time that Akins was elevated from the practice squad, and Houston will need to sign him if it wants him to continue to play. That should be a no-brainer for a couple of reasons. He's the most consistent receiving threat at tight end -- leading the room with 86 yards -- and the club released Pharaoh Brown (now with Cleveland).

Elevated to active roster
The Texans elevated Akins on Saturday from their practice squad to the active roster for Sunday's matchup against the Jaguars, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Brevin Jordan (ankle) still out, Akins will join the active roster for a third consecutive contest. Over his previous two appearances, the fifth-year tight end has caught five of six targets for 64 yards and a touchdown while playing 35 total offensive snaps. He figures to garner a similar role against Jacksonville in Week 5, but he'll be out of elevations following the contest, which means he'll have to be signed to the active roster if he's going to make any more appearances for Houston this season.
Oct 3, 2022
Returns to practice squad
Akins reverted to the Texans' practice squad Monday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins played 20 of Houston's 57 offensive snaps during Sunday's loss to the Chargers after being activated for the second week in a row. The 30-year-old caught both of his targets for 33 yards while playing as the No. 2 tight end behind O.J. Howard (43 offensive snaps) and ahead of fellow practice-squad player Mason Schreck (19 offensive snaps). Akins also lined up on six special-teams snaps, and he will be eligible for just one more elevation from the Texans' practice squad this season.
Oct 3, 2022
Snags two balls Week 4
Akins caught two of two targets for 33 yards in Sunday's 34-24 loss to the Chargers in Week 4.
ANALYSIS
Akins was up from the practice squad for a second consecutive week due to injuries that left Pharaoh Brown (hip) and Brevin Jordan (ankle) inactive. O.J. Howard was the starting tight end and led the position group in snaps, but Akins, who was part of the team last season, has system knowledge and could step into a larger role if necessary.
Oct 1, 2022
Back on Houston's roster
Akins was elevated to the Texans' active roster Saturday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins saw four targets in last week's loss to the Bears including a touchdown reception, and it's possible the 2018 third-round pick could see a similar workload again with Pharaoh Brown (hip/shoulder) listed as questionable for Sunday's contest against the Chargers and nominal pass-catching tight end Brevin Jordan (ankle) already ruled out. If Brown were unable to play, O.J. Howard and Akins would be the only active tight ends on the roster.
Sep 26, 2022
Returns to practice squad
Akins reverted to the Texans' practice squad Monday per the NFL's official transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Akins only played 17 snaps on offense, but he made them count. The five-year-pro converted four targets into three receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown. He may see another opportunity with the active roster in Week 4 against the Chargers if Brevin Jordan (ankle) were unable to play.
Sep 25, 2022
Catches touchdown
Akins recorded three receptions on four targets for 31 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Akins was active for the first time this season, and he took advantage by hauling in a four-yard touchdown reception late in the first quarter. He also chipped in a 25-yard catch to begin the second half. It's unclear whether the Texans will promote Akins to the active roster again in Week 4, but he made the case for a larger role with his strong performance.
Sep 24, 2022
Joining active roster for Week 3
Houston elevated Akins from its practice squad Friday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It will be Akins' first game action this season after he joined the practice squad going into his fifth year with the team. With Brevin Jordan (ankle) already out and Pharaoh Brown (shoulder) listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Chicago, Akins could potentially be in line to see significant playing time spelling O.J. Howard.
Aug 31, 2022
Joins Texans' practice squad
The Texans signed Akins to their practice squad Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Akins spent the first four seasons of his career in Houston but signed with the Giants in April. He was held off the Giants' 53-man roster but will get a chance to carve out a role as part of the Texans' practice squad.
Aug 24, 2022
Cut by Giants
The Giants released Akins on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins was competing for a spot on the Giants' 53-man roster among a plethora of options. The team is now down to four tight ends on the depth chart and figure to have one or two more cuts to make. The 30-year-old spent the last four season in Houston. It remains to be seen where his next opportunity to will be.
Aug 22, 2022
Buried on depth chart
Akins didn't record a catch or a target in Sunday's exhibition win over the Bengals, and he didn't enter the game on offense until midway through the fourth quarter, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins logged only eight offensive snaps in total, fewer than three other tight ends on the roster despite the fact that Ricky Seals-Jones (undisclosed) sat out again. The Giants don't have a particularly robust corps of players at the position, but Akins looks to be in danger of missing out on a spot on the initial 53-man roster based on his usage thus far. Rookie Daniel Bellinger is the only tight end who is a lock to make the team at this point, though, so Akins isn't completely out of the picture.
Apr 21, 2022
Lands in New York
Akins is signing with the Giants, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A 2018 third-round pick, Akins never topped 418 yards or two TDs in his four years with the Texans, though he did play at least 13 games each season. He and Ricky Seals-Jones will compete to replace Evan Engram (Jaguars) as the Giants' top pass catcher at tight end, though the upcoming NFL Draft could bring a third competitor for the job.
Jan 9, 2022
Sitting out Sunday
Akins (illness) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Akins was questionable due to an illness and won't be available for the final game of the season. The 2018 third-round pick is set to hit free agency during the offseason after totaling 24 receptions for 214 yards and zero touchdowns in 2021.
Jan 7, 2022
Questionable for finale
Akins (illness) is questionable for Sunday's game against Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
Akins was held off the practice field Thursday due to an illness, but he returned in a limited capacity Friday. Although he appears to be trending in the right direction ahead of Sunday's Week 18 contest, Antony Auclair could see a slight uptick in playing time if Akins is ruled out.
Jan 6, 2022
Misses Thursday's practice
Akins didn't participate in Thursday's practice session due to an illness.
ANALYSIS
Akins wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report, but he was unable to participate in practice Thursday. Since he wasn't placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the Texans presumably believe that the tight end is dealing with a non-COVID illness. However, his participation Friday should provide some clarity regarding his status for Sunday's Week 18 matchup against Tennessee.
Jan 3, 2022
Goes untargeted in loss
Akins was not targeted during Sunday's 23-7 loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Akins, who was on the field for just five snaps, has three catches for 30 yards over the seven games since Houston's bye week. He was a healthy scratch in three of those games.
Dec 27, 2021
One snap in win
Akins did not catch his lone target and played one snap in Sunday's 41-29 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
With rookie Brevin Jordan back the field after not playing the previous week, Akins returned to a minor role Week 16, although his one target came in the red zone. It's clear the Texans are developing the rookie, and Akins is playing out his final days in Houston.
Dec 20, 2021
Steps in for rookie
Akins caught two of three targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 30-16 win over Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
Akins played 20 snaps, his most since Week 9. Rookie Brevin Jordan, who has supplanted Akins as the top receiving threat at tight end, did not play Sunday after dealing with a hand injury during the practice week. It's been established over the last several weeks that a healthy Jordan is expected to receive more opportunities over the final stretch of the season, so Akins' involvement should be regarded as a blip.
Dec 13, 2021
Minor role in return
Akins caught his lone target for six yards in Sunday's 33-13 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Akins was active for the first time since Week 9, but it did not represent a return to prominence at tight end. He played just 12 snaps, fourth among the five tight ends active for the game. Houston has turned its focus on developing rookie Brevin Jordan, who caught a touchdown pass and was targeted seven times, so fantasy speculators can forget about Akins.
Dec 12, 2021
Returns to mix Sunday
Akins is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins is thus active for the first time since Week 9 and in the process, will provide the Texans with added TE depth Sunday. With Pharaoh Brown and Brevin Jordan also in the mix, however, Akins remains a speculative fantasy option.
Dec 5, 2021
Inactive Sunday
Akins (coach's decision) isinactive for Sunday's game against the Colts.
ANALYSIS
With Akins still the odd man out, the Texans' Week 13 tight end options will be Pharaoh Brown, Brevin Jordan and Antony Auclair.
Nov 28, 2021
Won't suit up Sunday
Akins (coach's decision) will not play Sunday against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Akins will be passed over for a second straight week in favor of Pharaoh Brown, Antony Auclair, and rookie Brevin Jordan. The 2018 third-round selection will try to earn a chance to get back on the field for Week 13 against the Colts.
Nov 21, 2021
Inactive in Week 11
Akins is inactive for Sunday's game against the Titans, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins is the odd man out in the Texans' tight end mix Sunday, with Pharaoh Brown back in action. Also on hand to handle Week 11 snaps at the position are Antony Auclair and rookie Brevin Jordan.
Nov 8, 2021
Grabs two targets in loss
Akins caught two of three targets for seven yards in Sunday's 17-14 loss to Miami.
ANALYSIS
Akins has multiple catches in six of the last seven games, but there could be change coming in the second half. The 29-year-old tight end is in the final year of his contract, and the Texans are developing rookie Brevin Jordan to take on the receiving role at the position.
Oct 31, 2021
Catches all five targets
Akins caught five receptions for 53 yards on five targets against the Rams on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Akins was efficient with his workload, but the five targets marks just the third time in 2021 that Akins drew more than two targets in a game, and his usage Sunday was possibly boosted by the absence of starting tight end Pharaoh Brown (thigh). Not just that, but rookie fifth-round pick Brevin Jordan saw four targets of his own and caught three for 41 yards and one touchdown. Jordan is the same type of tight end as Akins -- a slightly undersized pass-catching specialist -- so if Jordan should emerge further it could occur at Akins' expense. The Texans face Miami in Week 9.
Oct 25, 2021
Secures two catches in loss
Akins caught both of his targets for 13 yards in Sunday's 31-5 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Akins finished second among tight ends, behind Pharaoh Brown, who had three catches for 11 yards. The Texans' offense has been shut down the last weeks, having scored just eight points in losses to Indianapolis and Arizona. The last Houston touchdown was early in the third quarter of Week 5. There's a chance Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) returns Week 8 against the Rams, which could provide a boost to Akins and the other pass-catchers.
Oct 18, 2021
Season-high targets in loss
Akins caught four of six targets for 41 yards in Sunday's 31-3 loss to the Colts.
ANALYSIS
This was Akins' most productive game of 2021 and he moved up the target list, tying David Johnson at 18 for the season, tied for second behind Brandin Cooks at 57. Akins and Pharaoh Brown have operated as co-leaders at tight end, altering from week to week as a target leader of the position group, but Akins is considered the better receiving threat. Unfortunately, rookie quarterback Davis Mills is not helping either player's value.
Sep 24, 2021
Tallies four catches in loss
Akins brought in four of five targets for 32 yards in the Texans' 24-9 loss to the Panthers on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
The fourth-year tight end came into the game with just one reception for 17 yards through the first pair of contests, but Akins end up tied for second in catches with Anthony Miller on the Texans for the night. The Central Florida product was a safety valve for rookie quarterback Davis Mills, and given that the third-round pick is likely to continue operating a more conservative offense than veteran Tyrod Taylor (IR-hamstring) would, Akins could be busy again in a Week 4 road matchup against the Bills on Sunday, Oct. 3.
Sep 20, 2021
Makes first catch
Akins caught one of two targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 31-21 loss to Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Akins made his first catch of the season in Week 2 and has had minimal impact over the first two games. He and Pharaoh Brown each played 38 snaps, but neither played a significant role in the passing game.
Sep 13, 2021
Targeted twice in win
Akins did not catch either of his two targets in Sunday's 37-21 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Akins played a surprisingly subordinate role in the passing game to Pharoah Brown, who caught four of five targets for 67 yards. The one saving grace is that both or Akins' targets were in the red zone.
Aug 29, 2021
Makes lone preseason catch
Akins caught one of two targets for nine yards in Saturday's 23-16 loss to Tampa Bay in preseason Week 3.
ANALYSIS
Akins, who had just one catch during preseason action, should be considered the Texans' top pass-catching tight end, ahead of 2021 fifth-round draft pick Brevin Jordan. The question remains, however, are pass-catching tight ends valuable for an offense that will attempt to run the ball more than it did in 2020. Given that Houston is not expected to be competitive this season, thereby playing from behind, Akins should generate fantasy interest.
Aug 22, 2021
Records no stats Saturday
Akins was not targeted during Saturday's 20-14 win over the Cowboys in Preseason Week 2.
ANALYSIS
Akins made his preseason debut but did not start, per Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle. That honor went to Pharaoh Brown, who also made his preseason debut. The tight end position group was largely invisible, as only rookie Brevin Jordan was targeted (twice) and one catch for seven yards. Akins and Brown are one and two atop the depth chart, but if the Texans rely heavily on the ground game, which is the consensus, then Brown is the more favored blocker of the two.
Aug 17, 2021
Returns to practice
Akins (leg) returned to practice Monday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins missed four practices and the preseason opener while dealing with muscle tightness in his leg. He's a clear favorite to lead Houston tight ends in targets this season, but he may not have the blocking chops for a three-down role, which in turn would cap his volume ceiling as a pass catcher. The Texans also have blockers Pharaoh Brown and Ryan Izzo competing for TE snaps, in addition to the more receiving-focused guys like Akins, Kahale Warring, Anthony Auclair and rookie fifth-round pick Brevin Jordan.
Aug 16, 2021
Nearing return
Akins (leg) is close to returning to practice, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins has been dealing with muscle tightness in his leg since Wednesday, and he's been held out of practice since then. The tight end also missed Saturday's preseason opener against Green Bay. Coach David Culley is optimistic that the 29-year-old's injury isn't serious, but a better idea of his status will likely be revealed once he's able to increase his activity level.
Aug 13, 2021
Misses third practice
Akins (leg) missed a third consecutive practice Thursday, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Houston head coach David Culley suggested the injury is not serious, so it's likely the team is being cautious with the presumptive starter at tight end. It's a good bet Akins doesn't play Saturday's preseason opener against the Packers, opening up reps for several others, including 2021 fifth-round pick Brevin Jordan, who ended Thursday's practice session with a touchdown catch.
Aug 12, 2021
Expected back soon
Coach David Culley said Akins (leg) shouldn't be out for long, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reports.
ANALYSIS
Given that he's dealing with mere muscle tightness, Akins should be back on the practice field soon enough, even if he misses one or two preseason games. He's competing for playing time at tight end, but none of the other options (Pharaoh Brown, Ryan Izzo, Kahale Warring, Brevin Jordan, Anthony Auclair) looks like a serious threat for regular targets this season. If the Texans are to have a fantasy-relevant tight end this season, it likely will be Akins.
Aug 11, 2021
Bothered by muscle tightness
Akins will miss practice Wednesday with muscle tightness in his leg, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins is the team's top pass catcher at tight end, a position otherwise manned by blocking specialists or untested young players in Houston. His absence from practice frees up reps for Kahale Warring, Brevin Jordan and Pharaoh Brown.
Jul 30, 2021
Looking good at camp
Akins made a number of catches at Thursday's practice, John Harris of the Texans' official website reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins is on track to work as Houston's top pass-catching tight end, with an opportunity to handle more snaps (and possibly targets) after Darren Fells left for Detroit in the offseason. The Texans did draft Brevin Jordan in the fifth round and still have 258-pound blocker Pharaoh Brown and 2019 third-round pick Kahale Warring, but Akins is the only tight end on the roster with more than 19 NFL receptions. Given the poor state of the team's WR group, Akins could see a handful of targets per game -- possibly even more if he can improve his blocking and earn a three-down role.
Jan 4, 2021
Lags among targets
Akins caught one of two targets for nine yards in Sunday's 41-38 loss to the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Akins, who was Houston's third-most targeted receiver in 2020, was sixth among the seven receivers targeted Sunday. He finished with 49 targets, 37 passes, 403 yards and one touchdown. Akins emerged as the Texans' primary tight end in 2020 and has one year left on his contract. The makeup of next season's team depends on the whims of what will be a new general manager and head coach, but Akins should return as the starter in 2021.
Dec 28, 2020
Four catches in loss
Akins caught four of four targets for 39 yards in Sunday's 37-31 loss to the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Akins led Houston's tight ends in targets, receptions and yards, but he has not recorded a touchdown since Week 1 despite leading the position group with seven red-zone targets. With one game remaining, Akins needs one catch and 24 yards in Week 17 to record new career highs.
Dec 20, 2020
Reaches 50 yards in loss
Akins caught five of six targets for 50 yards in Sunday's 27-20 loss to Indianapolis.
ANALYSIS
Akins has become the top tight end threat on the roster and has six targets in three of the last five games. He's up to 43 targets over 11 games, which puts him within shouting distance of his career-high 55 targets established over 16 games in 2019. Unfortunately, Akins has found the end zone just once, and Houston's tight ends account for just three of quarterback Deshaun Watson's 27 touchdown throws. Week 16 has the Texans hosting the Bengals, whose defense is tied for 30th in fantasy points allowed to tight ends.
Dec 14, 2020
Second in targets
Akins caught three of six targets for 20 yards in Sunday's 36-7 loss to the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Akins once again led Houston's tight ends in targets while finishing second among all receivers in the loss. The Texans were without their top three wide receivers that started the season -- Will Fuller (suspension), Brandin Cooks (foot) and Randall Cobb (toe) -- which jumbled up the targeting options for quarterback Deshaun Watson. Cooks could return for Week 15 against the Colts, which would bring some normalcy, but Fuller is done for the season and Cobb is considering shutting down. That could open the door for Akins, who leads the team's tight ends in targets, to maintain a significant role in the passing game-plans going forward.
Dec 7, 2020
Leads tight ends again
Akins caught two of three targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 26-20 loss to the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Akins led Houston tight ends in targets and snaps (45), something that has been a common outcome when he's been healthy. However, the position group did not experience an uptick in targets as the Texans played without Will Fuller (suspension), Randall Cobb (toe) and Kenny Stills (released); instead, the offense double-downed on the remaining wide receivers as Keke Coutee (nine targets), Brandin Cooks (targets) and Chad Hansen (seven) took up the slack. Week 14 has Houston on the road in Chicago, whose defense has allowed nine touchdowns to opposing tight ends.
Nov 27, 2020
Targeted twice in win
Akins was targeted twice in Thursday's 41-25 win over the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Akins and the rest of tight ends did not play a significant role Thursday. He had two of the position group's three targets, including one red-zone chance. Houston was down two wide receivers, which gave the tight ends a chance to make an impact, but that never materialized. The snap count was relatively even among the group with Akins (26 snaps) third behind Pharaoh Brown (30) and Darren Fells (28). Week 13 brings a matchup with Indianapolis, which has allowed the fourth fewest yards and just one touchdown to opposing tight ends.
Nov 23, 2020
Back atop TE list
Akins caught five of six targets for 83 yards in Sunday's 27-20 win over the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Akins re-emerged as the top tight end target, amassing more than Darren Fells (three) and Pharaoh Brown (two) combined. The 11 targets for the position group was the most since Week 2 and could be a sign of things to come should Randall Cobb (toe) and Kenny Stills (quadriceps) miss significant time. With a short week to prepare for Thursday's meeting in Detroit, Akins could be in line for significant targets.
Nov 16, 2020
One target in loss
Akins caught his lone target for five yards in Sunday's 10-7 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Akins' target was in the red zone -- third target inside the 20 -- but overall, Houston's tight ends weren't used much in the game. He had Darren Fells each had one target while Pharaoh Brown was targeted twice and had a touchdown.
Nov 9, 2020
Returns to action
Akins caught two of four targets for 19 yards in Sunday's 27-25 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Akins returned to the lineup after missing three consecutive games with a concussion and ankle injury. The third-year tight end opened the season as the lead tight end but on Sunday, he finished third in snap count (22) behind Darren Fells (33) and Pharoah Brown (25). The diminished playing time is likely the result of the Texans exercising caution. Prior to his recent injury, Akins was the leading tight end target, as he was Sunday.
Nov 4, 2020
Returns to full practice
Akins (concussion/ankle) was a full participant in practice Wednesday, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins practiced fully for the first time since Week 4, which is when he last took the field. This news paves the way for Akins to get back on the field Sunday in Jacksonville and split tight end snaps with Darren Fells.
Oct 26, 2020
Targeting Week 9 return
Coach Romeo Crennel said Monday that he expects Akins (concussion) to be available against Jacksonville in Week 9, Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins has missed three straight games while dealing with a concussion, but it appears as though he's set to return to action after the Texans' bye. The 28-year-old served as Houston's clear top tight end during the first three games of the season, so if he's indeed able to fully clear the concussion protocol for Week 9 he'll stand to resume handling No.1 reps.
Oct 25, 2020
Can't suit up against Packers
Akins (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's matchup against Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
Akins suffered a concussion upon absorbing a helmet-to-helmet hit from Harrison Smith during Houston's Oct. 4th loss to the Vikings, and though he has since cleared concussion protocol, he remains beleaguered by an ankle issue. While the 28-year-old is sidelined for a third consecutive game, Darren Fells stands atop the Texans' tight end depth chart for Week 7. Fells has recorded 142 receiving yards and two TDs over his past two outings in Akins' stead.
Oct 23, 2020
Iffy for Week 7
Akins (ankle/concussion) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
That said, Akins didn't practice at all this week and isn't expected to suit up this weekend, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. If Akins does indeed remain sidelined in Week 7, fellow tight end Darren Fells will continue to see added passing targets against Green Bay.
Oct 22, 2020
Remains sidelined Thursday
Akins (ankle/concussion) didn't practice Thursday, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle , the tight end's concussion symptoms have subsided, but his high ankle sprain remains an issue. Akins will need to return to practice Friday in order to avoid missing a third straight game. In the event that he remains sidelined Sunday against the Packers, Darren Fells will continue to see added targets.
Oct 22, 2020
Ankle is the issue
Akins' concussion symptoms have subsided, and his high-ankle sprain is the reason for missing Wednesday's practice, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins has missed two games due to lingering concussion symptoms and an ankle sprain, both suffered against the Vikings in Week 4. Darren Fells has seen an uptick in snaps while Akins has been sidelined. Prior to the injury, Akins was the lead tight end.
Oct 21, 2020
Misses practice Wednesday
Akins (ankle/concussion) didn't practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Akins has missed two straight games, but he practiced in a limited fashion all of last week, so there's a chance he might return to the mix Sunday against the Packers if he resumes practice Thursday and/or Friday. If not, Darren Fells would continue to fill in as the Texans' top pass-catching tight end.
Oct 17, 2020
Not playing Sunday
Akins (ankle/concussion) will not play Sunday against the Titans, Kyle Odegard of the Cardinals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins, who was a limited participant in practice all week, was listed as questionable in Friday's final injury report, but it seems as if the team is simply playing it safe with their starting tight end. Darren Fells, who last week posted a season-high 57 receiving yards and registered his second touchdown this season, will once again operate as the primary pass catcher in Akins' absence.
Oct 16, 2020
Tagged as questionable
Akins (ankle/concussion) was limited in practice Friday and is questionable for Sunday's game versus the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Akins practiced in a limited fashion all week, and coach Romeo Crennel said Friday that Akins will be a game-time decision Sunday. Crennel also confirmed that Akins is still in the league's concussion protocol while also working through an ankle injury, so he'll need clearance on both fronts in order to play Sunday. Darren Fells will be the main beneficiary if Akins can't go.
Oct 16, 2020
Should be game-time call
Akins (concussion) is expected to be a game-time decision Sunday at Tennessee, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Romeo Crennel said the 28-year-old "made a little progress," but he clearly remains in the concussion protocol. Akins has practiced as a limited participant in four straight sessions and appears likely to tally another one Friday, but the release of the official injury report later in the day will provide the final answer on his practice participation.
Oct 15, 2020
Limited again Thursday
Akins (concussion) was limited in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Akins has now logged four straight limited practices, dating back to last week, while working to progress through the league's five-step concussion protocol. If he's unable to gain full clearance ahead of Sunday's contest in Tennessee, Darren Fells will draw another start at tight end.
Oct 14, 2020
Logs limited session
Akins (concussion/ankle) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Akins logged two limited practices last week before being inactive for this past Sunday's win over the Jaguars. It's unclear how much progress he's made through the concussion protocol since he's being held back by an ankle injury as well, but it's a good sign that he's on the field in some capacity. A full-speed practice by Friday would dismiss the question marks surrounding Akins' status for Sunday's game versus the Titans. Darren Fells will operate as Houston's No. 1 tight end if Akins isn't ready in time.
Oct 11, 2020
Not suiting up Sunday
Akins (concussion) is officially inactive for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old practiced as a limited participant Thursday and Friday and received the questionable tag, but he won't be available Sunday after suffering the concussion last week. Akins will need to fully clear the concussion protocol before returning to game action. Darren Fells will work as Houston's top tight end in his place versus the Jags.
Oct 8, 2020
Listed as limited participant
Akins (concussion/ankle) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Akins is clearly making progress through the league's five-step concussion protocol, but he'll need to garner full medical clearance before being allowed to retake the field. It's worth noting that the third-year tight end is dealing with an ankle injury, in addition to the concussion that forced him out of Houston's Week 4 loss to Minnesota.

Back at practice
Akins (ankle/concussion) practiced Thursday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen if he was limited or practiced fully, but Akins' return to the field in any capacity Thursday is a good sign after the tight end sat out Wednesday's practice.

Not practicing to start week
Akins (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins was concussed on a helmet-to-helmet hit from Vikings safety Harrison Smith this past Sunday, which also led to an ejection for Smith. The third-year tight end was coming into his own as Houston's top pass-catcher at his position, but Akins is still dealing with the aftereffects of Smith's hit and seems unlikely to suit up Sunday against the Jaguars. Akins will need to clear the concussion protocol before he can return to the field.

Won't return Sunday
Akins has been diagnosed with a concussion and won't return to Sunday's game versus the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Akins recorded three catches for 46 yards before absorbing an illegal hit from Vikings safety Harrison Smith, who was ejected for his actions. Darren Fells will operate as the top tight end for the rest of the game while Pharaoh Brown rotates in.

Possible concussion
Akins is being evaluated for a possible concussion Sunday against the Vikings, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his exit from the game, Akins paced the Texans with three catches for 46 yards. Darren Fells is next up for the team's pass-catching looks at tight end.

Two catches in Week 3
Akins caught two of three targets for 28 yards in Sunday's 28-21 loss to the Steelers in Week 3.
ANALYSIS
Akins, who had his second catch of 20-plus yards, has 11 catches through three weeks. Darren Fells was the big name among Houston tight ends entering 2020, but Akins has passed him as the lead man. He's played 78.2 percent of the offensive snaps compared to Fells' 44.2 percent.

Seven catches Week 2
Akins caught a career-high seven catches on seven targets for 55 yards in Sunday's 33-16 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Akins has been a surprise through the first two weeks. After scoring a touchdown Week 1, he finished second in targets behind Brandin Cook in Week 2. He's caught all nine of his targets while doubling the playing time of Darren Fells, who entered training camp as the lead tight end and scored Houston's lone touchdown Sunday. The usage may be a function of the Texans playing from behind, but Akins is emerging as a go-to option for quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Scores in Week 1 loss
Akins caught two of two targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 34-20 loss to the Chiefs in Week 1.
ANALYSIS
Akins had more snaps (48) than Darren Fells (25) and shined on his two receptions. His first resulted in a first down after he piled on 15 yards after the catch, showing elusiveness and tackle-breaking ability. Then he got separation and easily snagged a dart from Deshaun Watson for a 19-yard touchdown. Fells was the leader at tight end in 2019, but Akins has the early edge in 2020.

More consistency
Houston offensive coordinator Tim Kelly noted the improved consistency Akins has shown in preparation for his third NFL season.
ANALYSIS
Darren Fells is the expected starter at tight end with Akins part of a bunch looking to be the primary backup. "Jordan's become a more consistent player," said Kelly. "So, looking at the jump that he's made from year two to year three, he's been more consistent, has come in every day and has really made, basically, a big play a day for us as we've gone through this camp. The one thing that's shown that he's definitely improved on has been his consistency." Akins flashed as the second string tight end in 2019 when he caught 36 passes with an 11.6 YPG and two touchdowns. Jordan Thomas, Kahale Warring and Dylan Stapleton are also in the mix.

Gets work in with QB
Akins has been working out with quarterback Deshaun Watson, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Akins finished up last season with a hamstring injury and missed the Texans' postseason loss to the Chiefs, so his work with Watson means he's well past the injury. He's coming off a second NFL season that was more productive than is first, but the 28-year-old tight end faces a crowded position group in 2020. Darren Fells is still around as the lead tight end while Akins battles it out with Jordan Thomas and Kahale Warring.

Sidelined Sunday
Akins (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's divisional-round game at Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
After being limited in practice all week, Akins was listed as questionable for this contest Friday but ended up not making the trip north at all. His absence will leave Darren Fells (hip) and Jordan Thomas as the Texans' available tight ends.

Listed as questionable this week
Akins (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's playoff game against the Chiefs after being limited at practice this week.
ANALYSIS
Fellow tight end Darren Fells (hip) is also listed as questionable for the contest after being added to the Texans' injury report Friday. At this stage, both profile as speculative fantasy options this week, but as Sunday's kickoff approaches, if it becomes clear that one of the two will sit, while the other plays, there would be a degree of streaming appeal in DFS contests for the active option.

Logs another limited practice
Akins (hamstring) remained limited at practice Thursday, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Back-to-back practices, albeit in a limited capacity, offer hope that Akins can return to action Sunday against the Chiefs after missing last weekend's wild-card triumph over the Bills. If he remains out or limited, however, Darren Fells would once again see added tight end snaps and targets versus Kansas City.

Limited by hamstring issue
Akins (hamstring) was limited at practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Akins missed this past Saturday's wild-card win over the Bills, so he's not a lock to return to action Sunday against the Chiefs. If he's limited or remains out this weekend, Darren Fells would once again be in line for added snaps/targets in Houston's passing offense.

Good to go Week 14
Akins (knee) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Akins popped up on the Texans' injury report after practicing in limited fashion Thursday, but he upgraded to full participation during Friday's session. His ability to take every rep in the final practice of the week likely means he won't face any restrictions Sunday, so expect Akins to once again split the tight-end snaps with Darren Fells, as is typically the case.
Dec 5, 2019
Added to injury report Thursday
Akins (knee) was limited at practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Akins was a Thursday addition to Houston's injury report, so those considering the tight end in deeper formats this week will want to check back on his status Friday. Akins and Darren Fells have operated in time-share this season, but while the duo's catch/yardage numbers are similar, Fells has been the more productive fantasy option, having notched seven TDs to Akins' total of two through 12 games.
