Whittington barely played Week 1 and didn't get much playing time in the first half of Sunday's 41-10 loss at Arizona, but he then played every snap on offense in the second half, finishing with two catches for 22 yards on two targets. He seems to be ahead of Tutu Atwell in the pecking order and may thus join Demarcus Robinson and Tyler Johnson as full-time players this Sunday against the 49ers. While expectations for the rookie sixth-round pick should be modest for now, he did get a lot of praise from teammates, coaches and beat reporters this summer, and he's a candidate to take some carries in addition to whatever targets he might get.

A week removed from being on the field for just two snaps on offense, the sixth-round rookie out of Texas was on the field for 26 against Arizona. Whittington managed to turn a short pass from Matthew Stafford into a big 22-yard gain in the third quarter, and was on the field for significantly more plays than fellow backup Tutu Atwell, who saw just 10 snaps on offense. With Cooper Kupp (ankle) possibly missing time and Puka Nacua (knee) still on IR, Whittington may get an opportunity to shine with the Rams' receiving corps down to just four healthy players (Demarcus Robinson, Tyler Johnson, Whittington and Atwell) on the 53-man roster at the moment.

A rookie sixth-round pick, Whittington was the subject of considerable hype this summer -- like Nacua the year before -- but played only two snaps on offense in a 26-20 loss to the Lions in Week 1. Whittington made himself noticeable, at least, with a one-yard TD run wiped out by a penalty, a 20-yard kickoff return and a tackle on special teams. It remains to be seen if the rookie can develop into a starting WR or simply hangs around as a jack-of-all-trades depth player, but the door has been cracked open with Nacua out for at least four games. The Rams used Cooper Kupp, Demarcus Robinson and Tyler Johnson as their WR trio for nearly every snap after Nacua's injury in the Week 1 loss, and that could be the plan again Week 2 at Arizona.

Whittington secured five of eight targets for 52 yards during Saturday's 13-9 victory against the Chargers.

Despite playing in just 36 of the Rams' 63 snaps on offense, Whittington led the team in receiving yards and was tied with Xavier Smith (who played 59 snaps) for targets and receptions. The rookie out of Texas has been solid through two preseason games with an 11-126-0 line over 82 snaps on offense. Head coach Sean McVay generally keeps his starters on the bench through the preseason, but Whittington may simply be on the field to get some valuable reps in before his rookie campaign begins. While Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp will start the year as the top two wideouts for the Rams, who will be their No. 3 wideout is less defined. Demarcus Robinson and Tutu Atwell have been vying for the role, but Whittington could easily make a case for the position if his preseason performances continue to impress.

Whittington caught six of nine targets for 74 yards in Sunday's 13-12 preseason win over the Cowboys.

The 2024 sixth-round pick led the Rams in catches, targets and receiving yards, including a 30-yard gain on the team's opening drive, but that performance came during a game in which Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua (knee), Demarcus Robinson and Tutu Atwell were all sitting out. Whittington has been making a strong impression early in training camp and appears to be on course to claim a spot on the 53-man roster, but he's still unlikely to see much action in the regular season barring a rash of injuries ahead of him.

Whittington took some first-team reps last week, with teammate Cooper Kupp noting that the rookie is "pretty special" and "so impressive," Cameron DeSilva of Rams Wire reports.

Whittington was a top recruit for Texas back in 2019 and doesn't lack for size (6-foot-1, 205 pounds) or strength (18 bench press reps), but he lasted until Round 6 of the 2024 Draft after being overshadowed by early draft picks in the Longhorns offense throughout his college career. He never drew more than 72 targets in a season, and a hamstring injury this spring prevented him from running a 40-yard dash, which meant he didn't have an opportunity to alleviate concerns about a lack of speed. While it's a good sign Whittington is impressing veteran teammates early in training camp, DeSilva notes that Tutu Atwell seems to be the wide receiver competing with Demarcus Robinson for the No. 3 role. Whittington could perhaps jump into the competition if he continues performing well in practices, or at least make a push to be the next man up if either Kupp or Puka Nacua were to miss time.

Whittington had been nursing a hamstring injury since early March, but it now seems as if he's been able to move past the issue. The 2024 sixth-round pick had an injury-riddled career at Texas, but he was still able to record 1,757 receiving yards and five touchdowns throughout his five years in college. Now that Whittington is healthy, he can compete for a depth spot in the Rams' wide receiver room this offseason.
