Nabbed by Pats
Dobbs agreed to a two-year contract with the Patriots on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs served as a reserve quarterback for the 49ers in 2024 but got the Week 18 start with Brock Purdy (elbow) sidelined and Brandon Allen already earning a start himself Week 12. Between a pair of appearances, Dobbs completed 32 of 47 passes for 361 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, rushed nine times for 24 yards and two TDs and fumbled twice (one lost). In stints with five different teams, he's made 15 starts with a 3-12 record, so he brings an experienced hand behind rising second-year QB Drake Maye in New England.

Fills box score in losing effort
Dobbs completed 29 of 43 pass attempts for 326 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing eight times for 17 yards and a third score while coughing up a fumble in Sunday's 47-24 loss to Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs showed mixed results in his first official start with San Francisco after finishing last week's contest in place of Brock Purdy (elbow). The Passtronaut took DFS players on a wild ride that resulted in gaudy fantasy totals despite committing three turnovers against Arizona. The journeyman backup likely cemented a similar role next season, whether he returns to the 49ers or latches on to another club.

To start in Week 18
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Dobbs will start Sunday's game at Arizona, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs served as the 49ers' backup QB over Brandon Allen on Monday against the Lions, and the former saw the field late when Brock Purdy exited with an apparent elbow injury. Dobbs proceeded to complete three of four passes for 35 yards and tally a seven-yard TD run in limited action. Purdy since has been diagnosed with a contusion and nerve inflammation in his right throwing elbow, which is expected to sideline him for Week 18 action. Dobbs thus is in line for his first start of the campaign this weekend.

Relieves Purdy, could start Week 18
Dobbs took the field for the 49ers' final five offensive snaps of Monday's 40-34 loss to the Lions and completed three of four pass attempts for 35 yards while rushing for a seven-yard touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Made active over Brandon Allen as the 49ers' No. 2 quarterback for Week 17, Dobbs was thrust into action with 1:45 remaining in the fourth quarter, when starter Brock Purdy was forced out of the game with an elbow injury. Dobbs proceeded to finish out the drive with a touchdown run, but the 49ers' comeback bid ended when the Lions recovered the ensuing onside kick. Per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Purdy will likely be held out for Sunday's season finale in Arizona after an MRI revealed a contusion and nerve inflammation to his throwing elbow, but Shanahan was not willing to commit to whether Dobbs or Allen would draw the starting nod for Week 18. Shanahan told Maiocco that Dobbs' scrambling ability was a primary factor in the decision to keep him active ahead of Allen against the Lions, but Dobbs has otherwise been behind Allen on the depth chart all season.
Dec 30, 2024
Slotted in as No. 2 QB in Week 17
Dobbs is active and will operate as the 49ers' top backup quarterback in Monday night's matchup with the Lions, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs will serve as Brock Purdy's backup for the second time this season, also operating as the No. 2 quarterback in Week 13 versus the Bills. Dobbs will takeover in that role over Brandon Allen (coach's decision), who will be available as an emergency third option in case both Purdy and Dobbs are knocked out of the game in Detroit.
Dec 12, 2024
Playing emergency role again
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday night's game against the Rams, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs is serving as the emergency third quarterback behind starter Brock Purdy and backup Brandon Allen, meaning he can't enter the game unless Purdy and Allen are unavailable. The former Viking has yet to appear in a game this season, and he has been playing the emergency role for much of the campaign.
Dec 8, 2024
Emergency QB for Week 14
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs will serve as the emergency quarterback for Week 14, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic. Dobbs will only see the field Sunday if starter Brock Purdy and backup Brandon Allen were injured, sick or ejected.
Dec 1, 2024
Operating as No. 2 QB in Week 13
Dobbs is active and will operate as the 49ers' top backup quarterback for Sunday night's matchup with the Bills, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs will take a step up on the depth chart in Week 13 to serve as the No. 2 QB, supplanting Brandon Allen to take over the backup role behind Brock Purdy. Purdy is officially active after missing Week 12 with a shoulder injury.
Nov 17, 2024
Serving as emergency QB again
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against Seattle and will be San Francisco's emergency third quarterback, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs hasn't yet been active for a game this season with Brandon Allen working as Brock Purdy's backup. In order for Dobbs to get into Sunday's game against the Seahawks, both Purdy and Allen would need to be ruled out due to injury, illness or ejection.
Nov 10, 2024
Emergency QB for Week 10
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs will be the 49ers' emergency quarterback in Week 10. He'll only see the field Sunday if starter Brock Purdy and backup Brandon Allen are both forced to exit due to injuries.
Oct 27, 2024
Operating as emergency QB
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday night's game against the Cowboys, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs will once again operate as the team's emergency quarterback in Week 8. He'll only enter the game if both Brock Purdy and Brandon Allen are forced to exit with injuries.
Oct 20, 2024
Emergency QB versus Kansas City
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs is the Niners' third, emergency quarterback behind Brock Purdy and Brandon Allen.
Oct 10, 2024
Remains as emergency QB
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's contest against the Seahawks, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs will operate as the team's emergency quarterback for the sixth consecutive week to open the 2024 season. The 29-year-old will only enter the game if both Brock Purdy and Brandon Allen suffer injuries versus Seattle.
Oct 6, 2024
Emergency option again
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Once again, Dobbs will serve as the 49ers' emergency quarterback. He's technically inactive but will suit up and can play if Brock Purdy and Brandon Allen are both injured during Sunday's game.
Sep 29, 2024
Emergency QB again
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Patriots, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Once again, Dobbs will serve as the 49ers' emergency quarterback. He's technically inactive but will suit up and can play if Brock Purdy and Brandon Allen are both injured during Sunday's game.
Sep 22, 2024
Emergency quarterback for Week 3
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Rams, but he will serve as the emergency third quarterback, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs will only see the field Sunday if starter Brock Purdy and backup Brandon Allen are both injured.
Sep 15, 2024
Working as emergency QB again
Dobbs (coach's decision) will serve as San Francisco's emergency third quarterback Sunday versus the Vikings, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the second consecutive week that Dobbs has been designated the 49ers' emergency QB, as Brandon Allen has emerged as the team's preferred choice to back up Brock Purdy. Dobbs will be able to enter Sunday's game only if both Purdy and Dobbs become unavailable due to injury or ejection.
Sep 9, 2024
Will be emergency quarterback
Dobbs (coach's decision) is designated as San Francisco's emergency third quarterback for Monday's game versus the Jets, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While technically inactive, Dobbs would be available for the 49ers in the event that both Brock Purdy and backup Brandon Allen went down due to injury. He appeared in 13 games last year with the Cardinals and the Vikings.
Aug 19, 2024
Could secure backup QB role
Dobbs may be the frontrunner to back up Brock Purdy in San Francisco after his performance in a 16-10 win over the Saints on Sunday, Kevin Patra of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs led the 49ers on three scoring drives while completing 12 of his 21 passing attempts for 133 yards, and also ran the ball three times for 25 yards and a touchdown. The Tennessee product is considered to be competing with Brandon Allen for the job, with head coach Kyle Shannahan not tipping his hand, stating, "Dobbs got to play a little bit more and I thought he did a real good job leading on some of those drives. When Brandon came in, he did the same. It was very similar to last week. The games have been tight, the practices have been tight. So, it's a good problem we have right now."
Aug 19, 2024
First QB used after starter
Dobbs was the first backup quarterback to enter Sunday's exhibition contest for San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs wound up completing 57 percent of his passes for 133 yards and a rushing touchdown. Fellow backup Brandon Allen started the last preseason contest ahead of the Passtronaut, but the players reversed roles while serving as the backups against the Saints. Brock Purdy (2-6, 11 yards) is the unquestioned starter despite some rusty throws Sunday, but Dobbs may have leaped ahead of Allen based on both production and usage as Week 1 approaches.
Aug 14, 2024
Competing for backup role
Dobbs will compete with Brandon Allen for the No. 2 quarterback role in San Francisco this preseason, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers' star-studded roster has created no controversy over who will start come Week 1, leaving the battle to be Brock Purdy's backup as the key competition this preseason. Dobbs performed well in the team's first preseason contest, completing 70 percent of his passes for 146 yards and a rushing touchdown. The journeyman's lone turnover came on a failed Hail Mary attempt, so we won't hold that against him. The key takeaway from Saturday's exhibition was that Dobbs entered the contest in the second half after Allen (53.8 completion percentage for 98 yards). The two veteran backups will continue to prove their worth as the start of the regular season approaches.
Mar 18, 2024
Finds work in San Francisco
The 49ers and Dobbs agreed to a contract Monday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
In 13 games (12 starts) between the Cardinals and Vikings this past season, Dobbs completed 262 of 417 (62.8 percent) of his passes for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also was viable as a runner, averaging 5.5 yards on his 77 carries while scoring six TDs on the ground. Brock Purdy is the unquestioned starting quarterback for San Francisco, but Dobbs' recent on-field work should give him a leg up on the backup job ahead of holdover Brandon Allen.
Jan 11, 2024
Tosses 13 TDs across 12 starts
Dobbs appeared in 13 games during the 2023 season, completing 262 of 417 pass attempts (62.8 percent) for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while adding 77 carries for 421 rushing yards and six touchdowns.
ANALYSIS
Coming into 2023, Dobbs had started just two NFL games since being taken in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Steelers. After ending 2022 as the Titans' starter, Dobbs signed with the Browns as a free agent but was traded to the Cardinals just ahead of Week 1. He started the first eight games of the season for Arizona but was acquired by the Vikings near the trade deadline after Minnesota lost Kirk Cousins to a season-ending Achilles' tear. Dobbs appeared in five games (four starts) for the Vikings before being benched in favor of Nick Mullens to close out the year. Dobbs had a turnover problem in 2023, giving the ball away 17 times across 13 games. He's scheduled to be a free agent in March and will likely only attract backup work.
Jan 5, 2024
Will be backup at Detroit
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Friday that Dobbs will serve as the primary backup to starting quarterback Nick Mullens on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs has not seen the field for the Vikings since he was benched in favor of Mullens during their Week 14 win at Las Vegas. Mullens has played very ambitiously over the last four games, leading to some big plays but also an unacceptable number of interceptions. If turnovers get the best of Mullens in Week 18, Dobbs could see the tables turn back in his favor during Minnesota's season finale.
Dec 31, 2023
Emergency QB versus Green Bay
Dobbs (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Packers and will serve as the emergency quarterback, Craig Peters of the Vikings' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs will serve as the Vikings' emergency quarterback for the third straight game. Head coach Kevin O'Connell has elected to start Jaren Hall over Nick Mullens for Sunday's pivotal contest. Dobbs will see the field if both Hall and Mullens sustain injuries.
Dec 14, 2023
Demoted to No. 3 quarterback
Coach Kevin O'Connell announced Thursday that Jaren Hall, not Dobbs, will be Nick Mullens' backup for Saturday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
It's been a quick fall from grace for Dobbs after he helped guide Minnesota to back-to-back wins in Weeks 9 and 10 following his acquisition from the Cardinals. The Vikings then dropped two straight before scoring just three points last Sunday in Las Vegas. Dobbs has thrown two touchdowns and five interceptions in those last three games, while also fumbling three times and losing one. O'Connell is giving Dobbs a break, but there's a chance we could see him under center again if Mullens and Hall fail to impress.
Dec 12, 2023
Loses hold of starting gig
Dobbs will move into a backup role for Saturday's game against the Bengals with the Vikings naming Nick Mullens their Week 15 starting quarterback.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs' standing atop the depth chart was already on shaky ground after a four-interception performance in a Week 12 loss to the Bears, and he was unable to rebound following the Vikings' Week 13 bye. He completed just 10 of 23 pass attempts for 63 yards and carried five times for 21 yards in this past Sunday's 3-0 win over the Raiders before getting benched in the fourth quarter. Mullens directed Minnesota's only scoring drive of the game and will now be rewarded with his first start as a member of the Vikings in Week 15. The Vikings haven't announced whether Dobbs or rookie Jaren Hall will serve as Mullens' top backup.
Dec 10, 2023
Benched in Week 14 win
Dobbs completed 10 of 23 passes for 63 yards and added 21 rushing yards on five carries before being replaced by Nick Mullens in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 3-0 win over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
It was the lowest-scoring game in the NFL since 2007, and Mullens led Minnesota to the only scoring drive on his second possession after taking over, taking the Vikings 56 yards for their only trip into the red zone to set up a 36-yard Greg Joseph field goal. With Dobbs having posted poor numbers two games in a row, Mullens seems very likely to get his first start of the season in Week 15 against the Bengals.
Dec 6, 2023
Will remain starter vs. Raiders
Dobbs will remain Minnesota's starting quarterback Sunday against the Raiders, Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network report.
ANALYSIS
Minnesota's coaching staff mulled over the idea of inserting Nick Mullens under center after Dobbs struggled in the team's 12-10 loss to the Bears in Week 12, but Dobbs will ultimately remain the starter coming out of the Vikings' bye week. Prior to the poor showing against Chicago, Dobbs had at least one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown in each of his first three appearances for the Vikings. While Dobbs' grip on the starting job is tenuous, his production could be aided by the expected return of star wide receiver Justin Jefferson (hamstring) for Sunday's game in Vegas.
Nov 28, 2023
Vikings considering QB change
Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell said the team would evaluate Dobbs' four-game performance at quarterback before naming a starter for Week 14 after a bye week, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
O'Connell mentioned that he debated putting Nick Mullens into Monday's game after Dobbs struggled and threw four interceptions, so the Vikings could be serious about considering a quarterback change. Dobbs would still likely be the favorite to start over Mullens or Jaren Hall, but it doesn't sound like a given.
Nov 27, 2023
Done in by turnovers Monday
Dobbs completed 22 of 32 passes for 185 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions in the Vikings' 12-10 loss to the Bears on Monday night. He also rushed twice for 11 yards.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs ultimately cobbled together a decent completion rate, but he averaged just 5.8 yards per attempt and constantly short-circuited drives with his interceptions. Improbably, only one of Dobbs' four picks led to any Bears points, and only three at that. However, the first three came in Chicago territory, particularly costly in a game decided by two points. Dobbs did manage to pull the Vikings ahead just past the midway point of the fourth quarter with a 17-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson, but Justin Fields ultimately one-upped him by leading a game-winning drive. Dobbs takes a 13:10 TD:INT (4:5 in four games with Minnesota) into a Week 14 road matchup against the Raiders on Dec. 10 following a Week 13 bye.
Nov 19, 2023
Solid in Week 11 loss
Dobbs completed 20 of 32 passes for 221 yards with one touchdown and one interception and rushed eight times for 21 yards and another score in the Vikings' 21-20 loss to the Broncos on Sunday night. He also committed three fumbles, losing one and recovering the other two.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs turned in another serviceable performance from an overall production standpoint, but his ball security issues Sunday night stood out. The journeyman signal-caller's two turnovers led to Broncos field goals, and after leading the Vikings to three points on a marathon 14-play drive in the fourth quarter, Dobbs couldn't help Minnesota answer Denver's go-ahead touchdown, throwing four straight incompletions to close out his team's final possession. Nevertheless, Dobbs has job security and the possible return of Justin Jefferson (hamstring) on his side as he looks ahead to a Week 12 divisional home clash with the Bears on Monday night, Nov. 27.
Nov 12, 2023
Strong in first start with Vikings
Dobbs completed 23 of 34 passes for 268 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 27-19 win over the Saints. He added eight rushes for 44 yards and an additional score.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs began the game on fire and had 260 total yards to go with two scores in the first half. His first trip to the end zone came on the ground, as he ran in a score from seven yards away. He followed that up by running a perfect two-minute drill, which he capped by finding T.J. Hockenson for a 28-yard touchdown. The Vikings took their foot off the gas in the final two quarters and coasted to victory, but Dobbs has a positive outlook for the final half of the season -- particularly once Justin Jefferson (hamstring) can return.
Nov 6, 2023
Poised for Week 10 start
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday that Dobbs will receive all the first-team reps in practice this week with the expectation that he starts Sunday against the Saints, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
O'Connell's announcement isn't particularly surprising, as Week 9 starter Jaren Hall is in the concussion protocol, while Dobbs came off the bench and helped lead the Vikings to a rousing 31-28 win over the Falcons in his debut. After getting no practices in with his new team following his acquisition from the Cardinals on Tuesday, Dobbs had some expected struggles -- he lost two fumbles and took a sack in the end zone -- but he came on strong late in the game and finished with 20 completions on 30 attempts for 158 yards and two touchdowns to go with 66 rushing yards. Though Dobbs should benefit from a more typical practice schedule this week as he prepares to start Sunday, he may need a solid showing versus New Orleans to ensure he remains the Vikings' No. 1 quarterback. Nick Mullens (back) is on injured reserve but is eligible to resume practicing this week, and he and Hall could serve as challengers to Dobbs for starting duties following Kirk Cousins' (Achilles) season-ending injury.
Nov 5, 2023
Leads Minnesota to win off bench
Dobbs took over for an injured Jaren Hall after the first series and was for 20-of-30 passing for 158 yards for two touchdowns in Sunday's win at Atlanta. He also had seven carries for 66 yards and a touchdown. He led the Vikings on a game-winning touchdown drive with two minutes and eight seconds left.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs put together an amazing performance considering he only joined the team on Wednesday after his trade from Arizona. He wasn't expected to play in the game since he was just getting up to speed on the playbook, but served as the backup. He started off poorly by taking a sack in the end zone for a safety and also losing a fumble early in the game. However, his rushing ability made a huge impact especially on a key fourth-down play late in the game. Dobbs will likely be the starter the rest of the season after this performance.
Nov 3, 2023
Debuting Sunday in backup role
Dobbs will be Minnesota's backup quarterback behind Jaren Hall against the Falcons on Sunday, Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs will make his Vikings debut after starting eight games for the Cardinals, but he isn't ready to run the offense yet after having been acquired in a trade Tuesday. Hall will make his first NFL start after entering Minnesota's previous game in relief following Kirk Cousins' season-ending ACL tear. Dobbs could be an option to start as soon as Week 10 against the Saints, though Hall and Nick Mullens (back) are also candidates to ascend to the top of the depth chart in Cousins' absence.
Oct 31, 2023
Won't start immediately for new team
Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell said that Dobbs, whom the Vikings acquired from the Cardinals on Tuesday, isn't expected to start Sunday's game at Atlanta but could be available to play, Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
O'Connell noted that the Vikings are preparing rookie fifth-round pick Jaren Hall to make his first career start in the wake of Kirk Cousins suffering a season-ending Achilles injury Week 8 against Green Bay. While Hall could end up sticking atop the depth chart on a more permanent basis if he performs well against Atlanta, Dobbs at least gives Minnesota a battle-tested option to turn to at quarterback if Hall doesn't prove to be NFL ready. As the starter for Arizona's first eight games of the season, Dobbs completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 5.9 yards per attempt, eight touchdowns and five interceptions while adding 258 yards and three scores on 47 rushing attempts.
Oct 31, 2023
Gets moved to Minnesota
The Cardinals traded Dobbs to the Vikings on Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Two days removed from Arizona coach Jonathan Gannon reaffirming Dobbs' status as the team's starting quarterback and then rescinding it one day later, Dobbs is on the move to a QB-needy team after the Vikings lost Kirk Cousins for the season to a torn Achilles this past Sunday. It's unclear if Dobbs will start over rookie fifth-round pick Jaren Hall immediately, but the veteran at least will have three days to practice with his new team before new coach Kevin O'Connell will need to make such a decision.
Oct 30, 2023
Not starting in Week 9
Coach Jonathan Gannon said Monday that Dobbs won't start Sunday's game in Cleveland, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
After Sunday's 31-24 loss to the Ravens, Gannon told Tyler Drake of ArizonaSports.com that Dobbs would remain the team's starter Week 9, but after reviewing the tape, he's opted to move on to Kyler Murray or rookie Clayton Tune. Murray is closing in on a return to action from last season's torn ACL, but if he doesn't gain clearance to play Sunday, it'll be Tune under center for Arizona. Through eight games this season, Dobbs has completed 63 percent of his passes for 1,569 yards, eight touchdown and five interceptions, recorded 47 carries for 258 yards and three more TDs and fumbled eight times (four lost).
Oct 30, 2023
Late rally falls short Sunday
Dobbs completed 25 of 37 pass attempts for 208 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 26 rushing yards and another score on six attempts in Sunday's 31-24 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs earned another start after Kyler Murray (knee) was ruled doubtful for Sunday's matchup against Baltimore. The backup orchestrated a late comeback attempt with two touchdown throws in the fourth quarter to give the Cardinals life after trailing by multiple scores for the majority of the contest. Dobbs did throw two more interceptions Sunday, which gives him 10 combined touchdowns to nine turnovers through eight starts this year. Despite inconsistent play and Murray's improving health, head coach Jonathan Gannon said after Sunday's loss that he is sticking with Dobbs as the starter for next Sunday's game against the Browns, as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Browns boast one of the league's top pass defenses at the midpoint of the season, adding additional risk to starting Dobbs in fantasy in Week 9.
Oct 27, 2023
Set for another start
Dobbs is in line to start Sunday's game against Baltimore after the Cardinals listed Kyler Murray (knee) as doubtful, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It may end up being Dobbs' last start of the season, considering Murray was a full practice participant throughout the week and no longer is listed with a knee injury on Arizona's official injury report. The task won't be easy, with Baltimore leading or tied for the league lead in a slew of defensive stats, including net yards allowed per pass attempt (4.1), TD passes allowed (four) and points against (97).
Oct 27, 2023
Working with starters in practice
Dobbs worked with the starting offense during the open portion of Friday's practice while Kyler Murray continued throwing to practice-squad players, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear if this means Dobbs is scheduled for another start or is just an effort by coach Jonathan Gannon to create that impression. Murray was removed from the injury report Thursday and will need to either be re-added Friday or activated from PUP to the roster, but it is possible he'd merely handle a backup role in his first game since last November. Gannon said "we'll see" Friday morning when reporters asked him which QB would start this Sunday against the Ravens.
Oct 22, 2023
Scores lone TD in loss
Dobbs completed 19 of 33 pass attempts for 146 yards while taking seven carries for 43 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 20-10 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs struggled as a passer for the second week in a row, resulting in his third game without a passing touchdown in seven starts this season. The 28-year-old was able to salvage his day from a fantasy standpoint by ripping off a 25-yard touchdown scamper on Arizona's lone touchdown drive Sunday. The journeyman backup is averaging 33.1 rushing yards through seven weeks, but he appears to be overmatched as a passer in the rare instances he is given a clean pocket. Kyler Murray (knee) might not be ready until Week 10, giving Dobbs at least a couple more starts for the 1-5 Cardinals, starting with a home matchup against Baltimore next Sunday.
Oct 15, 2023
Accuracy struggles in Week 6 loss
Dobbs completed 21 of 41 passes for 235 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and rushed seven times for 47 yards in the Cardinals' 26-9 loss to the Rams on Sunday. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
After completing at least 67.7 percent of his passes in each of the first five games of the season, Dobbs struggled with accuracy for the second straight game following his season-low 46.9 percent completion rate in Week 5 against the Bengals, and he saw his multi-touchdown streak snapped at two games. Dobbs did complete passes to eight different players and paced the Cardinals on the ground with his fourth tally of more than 40 rushing yards in the last five games. The journeyman signal-caller does draw a more palatable matchup in a Week 7 road divisional clash versus the Seahawks.
Oct 8, 2023
Held in check by Cincy
Dobbs completed 15 of 32 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in Sunday's 34-20 loss to the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
He also gained one yard on three carries and lost a fumble. The two TDs both came in the second quarter and gave the Cardinals a 14-10 lead, but Dobbs then threw a pick-six to Cam Taylor-Britt just before halftime and Arizona never recovered. The INTs were the first of the season for Dobbs, but his 6:2 TD:INT is still impressive for a QB who was a career backup coming into 2023. He'll look to take better care of the ball in Week 6 against the Rams.
Oct 2, 2023
Solid fantasy effort in loss
Dobbs completed 28 of 41 pass attempts for 265 yards, a pair of touchdown passes and no turnovers to go along with 48 rushing yards on 12 attempts in Sunday's 35-16 loss to San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs turned in his best fantasy start through four games this season despite losing by several scores to San Francisco. It was the 28-year-old journeyman's first game of his career with multiple passing touchdowns, as he continues to start in place of the injured Kyler Murray (knee). Dobbs' ability to take off from the pocket and provide rushing stats in addition to his middling passing results puts him on the fringe of fantasy utility through four weeks. Dobbs will now return to Arizona to take on a struggling Bengals squad next Sunday.
Sep 24, 2023
Efficient in upset win
Dobbs completed 17 of 21 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 28-16 win over the Cowboys. He added 55 rushing yards on six carries.
ANALYSIS
Facing a Dallas defense that had dominated the opposition through its first two games, Dobbs rarely seemed rattled as he led Arizona to three touchdowns and three field goals, including a two-yard TD toss to Marquise Brown in the fourth quarter that all but sealed the victory. Dobbs has looked good so far in his first extended stretch as a starting QB, but he faces a daunting task in Week 4 on the road against the 49ers.
Sep 17, 2023
Strong showing in loss to Giants
Dobbs completed 21 of 31 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown while adding 41 rushing yards and a TD on three carries in Sunday's 31-28 loss to the Giants. He also ran in a two-point conversion.
ANALYSIS
The journeyman quarterback led the Cardinals to a 20-0 halftime lead, highlighted by Dobbs' 23-yard TD run early in the second quarter, but Arizona's offense went cold after intermission and let New York come storming back. Dobbs has done more than enough so far to keep rookie Clayton Tune on the bench, but the Cardinals face an extremely tough matchup in Week 3 when the Cowboys come to town.
Sep 11, 2023
Gets another start
Coach Jonathan Gannon confirmed that Dobbs will remain Arizona's starting QB on Sunday versus the Giants, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
In the team's season-opening 20-16 loss to the Commanders, Dobbs completed 21 of 30 passes for 132 yards without a TD or pick, while carrying three times for minus-three yards and recording three fumbles (two lost). Dobbs will look to pick up the pace this weekend against a Giants team that dropped a 40-0 decision to the Cowboys on Sunday night, but he still profiles as a speculative fantasy lineup play while filling in for Arizona's injured franchise QB Kyler Murray (knee), who is currently on the PUP list.

Quiet Cardinals debut
Dobbs completed 21 of 30 passes for 132 yards without a touchdown or interception in Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
He also lost three yards on three carries, and committed three fumbles while losing two of them. Arizona's offense was stagnant most of the afternoon under Dobbs, generating just three field goals while the defense scored the only TD for the team on a second-quarter fumble recovery by Cameron Thomas. It was only the third start of Dobbs' career after he was under center for the Titans' final two games of 2022, and considering he didn't even join the Cardinals until late August, his lack of production isn't a surprise. Unless coach Jonathan Gannon decides to switch to rookie QB Clayton Tune, Dobbs will look to make a bigger impact in a Week 2 home tilt against the Giants.

Confirmed as starter
Dobbs has taken the snaps with the first-team offense during warmups, signaling that he'll serve as the Cardinals' starting quarterback in Sunday's game against the Commanders, Dani Sureck of the Cardinals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Though first-year head coach Jonathan Gannon never officially named a starting quarterback, multiple reports over the past few days had already pointed in the direction of Dobbs getting the nod over rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune. Dobbs will be making just the third start of his seven-year career Sunday, after the first two game late last season with the Titans. In his sparse NFL action to date, Dobbs has completed 50 of 85 pass attempts (58.8 percent) for 456 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions to go with 14 carries for 75 yards in eight games. The Cardinals will likely lean heavily on the James Conner-led ground attack for as long as Sunday's game remains competitive, which may render Dobbs as little more than a low-end fantasy option even in leagues that start two quarterbacks.

Slated to start Sunday
The Cardinals are expected to have Dobbs under center for their season opener this Sunday at Washington, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Since the Steelers drafted Dobbs in the fourth round of the 2017 Draft, he's played in just eight games with two starts, both with the Titans last season. In those latter contests, he completed 40 of 68 passes for 411 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing eight times for 44 yards. Dobbs hasn't had much time to get acclimated to Arizona's playbook following his trade from Cleveland on Aug. 24, but he appears as if he'll get the first chance to start for the recovering Kyler Murray (knee) to kick off the 2023 campaign. Behind Dobbs, rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune will serve as the team's No. 2 QB.
Aug 28, 2023
Week 1 job wide open
Dobbs faces a wide open opportunity to earn the Week 1 starting job at Washington with Arizona having released Coly McCoy, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs, who joined the Cardinals via a trade from Cleveland last Thursday, is the likeliest option to start with McCoy out of the picture and Kyler Murray (knee) expected to start the regular season on the PUP list. Rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune represents his top competition, and though Dobbs will only have a few weeks and zero preseason reps to acquaint himself with Arizona's offense, he did play under offensive coordinator Drew Petzing last season in Cleveland. The Cardinals remain quiet regarding Murray's expected return date, so the combination of Dobbs and Tune could remain atop the depth chart beyond the first month of the season.

Headed to Arizona
The Browns are slated to trade Dobbs to the Cardinals along with a 2024 seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a 2024 fifth-rounder, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
As a result, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Kellen Mond, who Cabot reports was pulled back off of waivers by the Browns, are in line to back up Deshaun Watson. With the Cardinals, Dobbs provides his new team with another potential starting QB option in the event that Kyler Murray (knee) misses time early on this season.
Aug 24, 2023
Named top backup QB
Coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Thursday that Dobbs will open the coming season as the Browns' No. 2 QB, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
With Kellen Mond having been waived Thursday, 2023 fifth-rounder Dorian Thompson-Robinson slots in as the team's QB3 ahead of Week 1. Dobbs is thus next in line for regular season signal-caller reps in the event that starter Deshaun Watson misses any time.
Aug 1, 2023
Sitting out Hall of Fame Game
Dobbs (rest) will not play Thursday, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs, who is currently the Browns' No. 2 quarterback will get the night off, as the Browns opt to take a closer look at Kellen Mond and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
Mar 20, 2023
Returns to Cleveland
The Browns and Dobbs agreed to terms on a one-year contract Monday, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs served as Cleveland's backup quarterback to Jacoby Brissett during Deshaun Watson's 11-game suspension to begin last season. But the team cut Dobbs to make room on the roster for Watson in late November, and he eventually followed a stint on the Lions' practice squad with another on the Titans' active roster. With the latter, Dobbs started over rookie Malik Willis in Weeks 17 and 18, completing 40 of 68 passes (58.8 percent) for 411 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing eight times for 44 yards. Now that he's back with the Browns, he'll serve as the No. 2 QB behind Watson with Brissett having moved on to the Commanders in free agency.

Costly turnover in loss
Dobbs completed 20 of 29 passes for 179 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Saturday's 20-16 loss to Jacksonville. He added five rushes for 32 yards.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs drew his second consecutive start, this time with the AFC South title on the line. He performed admirably for much of the game, highlighted by a 21-yard dart to Chigoziem Okonkwo for a touchdown midway through the second quarter. However, Dobbs made a vital mistake with only three minutes remaining in the matchup when he fumbled while being sacked, which the Jacksonville defense returned for the game-winning touchdown. Dobbs spent the majority of the season as the backup quarterback in Cleveland, and he'll likely stick in a similar role in 2023.
Jan 2, 2023
Will start Week 18
Head coach Mike Vrabel said Monday that Dobbs will start Sunday's game against the Jaguars, Terry McCormick of TitanInsider.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Ryan Tannehill (ankle) sidelined, Malik Willis drew the start in Week 16, but after a disappointing loss to Houston, Tennessee opted to give Dobbs a chance in Week 17. While the Titans still lost to Dallas, Vrabel said he liked Dobbs' decision making during the contest and will give the veteran backup another opportunity during Sunday's AFC South title match against Jacksonville. Dobbs completed 20 of 39 passes for 232 yards, a touchdown and an interception during the Week 17 loss to Dallas. He also rushed three times for 12 yards.
Dec 30, 2022
In mix to start Week 18
Coach Mike Vrabel has yet to reveal his choice to start against Jacksonville in Week 18 between Dobbs and Malik Willis, Jim Wyatt of the Titans' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs' 232 passing yards in Thursday's loss to the Cowboys were just two fewer than Willis has mustered in his first three NFL starts combined. Willis has more long-term upside, but in a win-and-in scenario against the AFC South rival Jaguars, Dobbs is likely the front-runner to get the starting nod. "That's the only thing that matters, is winning one game," Vrabel said. "Getting healthy, getting recovered and then winning one game, and finding out who is going to do that."
Dec 30, 2022
Strong performance in spot start
Dobbs completed 20 of 39 passes for 232 yards with one touchdown and one interception while rushing three times for 12 yards in the Titans' 27-13 loss to the Cowboys on Thursday night. He also committed two fumbles, losing one and recovering the other.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs barely completed half his pass attempts and his two turnovers were a blemish, but given the brief amount of time he had to prepare and his opponent, the veteran signal-caller acquitted himself reasonably well. The 2017 fourth-round pick of the Steelers connected with Robert Woods for his one touchdown from seven yards out late in the third quarter, and he completed passes to nine different players overall. Dobbs is slated to return to the No. 2 role for a Week 18 road matchup against the Jaguars a week from Sunday that will decide the AFC South title, unless head coach Mike Vrabel feels Thursday's performance made enough of a case for Dobbs to usurp the unsteady Malik Willis for the start in that game.
Dec 29, 2022
Slated to face Cowboys Thursday
Dobbs is slated to start at QB for the Titans in Thursday night's game against the Cowboys, John Glennon of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thursday's contest doesn't have playoff implications for the Titans -- who will face the Jaguars in Week 18 with the AFC South title on the line - so the team is in line give Dobbs an opportunity to make his first career NFL regular season start in a game in which multiple key players are being held out. With that in mind, Dobbs is an option for those who had been planning to use Malik Willis (Tennessee's Week 16 starter in place of Ryan Tannehill, who was placed on IR on Thursday) in fantasy lineups, or who are otherwise scrambling for a Week 17 signal-caller in QB-heavy formats. With a solid showing versus Dallas, Dobbs could potentially find himself in the starting mix a week from Sunday against Jacksonville.
Dec 29, 2022
Expected to start Thursday
The Titans are expected to start Dobbs at QB versus the Cowboys on Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With Ryan Tannehill (ankle) ruled out, it looks like the Titans are in line to start Dobbs rather than Malik Willis, with the team likely to rest a number of key players with an eye toward being as healthy as possible for a looming AFC South title showdown against the Jaguars in Week 18.
Dec 21, 2022
Signed to Titans' active roster
Dobbs was signed by the Titans off of the Lions' practice squad Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs was reverted to the Lions' practice unit after being active for the team's Week 15 win over the Jets, but he will now head to Tennessee. The quarterback could serve as the backup option behind Malik Willis in Week 16 if Ryan Tannehill (ankle) is unable to go versus Houston. Dobbs last attempted a regular season pass in 2020, spending most of his time on practice squads the last few years.
Dec 19, 2022
Returns to practice squad
Dobbs reverted to the Lions' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs was elevated from the practice squad for the first time since joining Detroit's practice squad two weeks ago, serving as one of the team's three active quarterbacks alongside starter Jared Goff and backup Nate Sudfeld. However, Goff went on to play all 68 of the team's offensive snaps as expected. Dobbs will now be eligible for two more game-day activations while with the Lions this season.
Dec 17, 2022
Elevated from practice squad
Dobbs was elevated to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs will now play in his first game with Lions after signing with their practice squad two weeks ago. The former Tennessee quarterback will serve as the third-string option behind Jared Goff and Nate Sudfeld and should only see playing time if either of them were to get injured.
Dec 5, 2022
Officially on Lions' practice squad
Detroit signed Dobbs to its practice squad Monday.
ANALYSIS
Just a week after being waived by Cleveland, Dobbs has found another opportunity to make an impression with the Lions. Barring injury though, it's unlikely he's elevated from the practice squad any time soon.
Dec 5, 2022
Signing with Lions practice squad
The Lions are expected to sign Dobbs to their practice squad Monday, Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After Dobbs was waived by the Browns on Nov. 28, the quarterback will get another opportunity with the Lions' practice unit. The 27-year-old hasn't appeared in a game since 2020 and will operate as an additional depth option behind Jared Goff moving forward.
Nov 28, 2022
Waived by Cleveland
Cleveland waived Dobbs on Monday, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
The Browns let Dobbs go to make room on the active roster for Deshaun Watson, who's expected to start Sunday's matchup against the Texans following an 11-game suspension. Jacoby Brissett, who played well in Watson's absence, will shift to the primary backup, while Kellen Mond operates as the No. 3 quarterback. Per Cabot, Cleveland would like to sign Dobbs to its practice squad if he clears waivers.
Sep 1, 2022
Locked into No. 2 role
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski affirmed Thursday that Dobbs is the team's primary backup quarterback behind current starter Jacoby Brissett, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs' solid preseason showing allowed him to beat out fellow backup signal-caller Josh Rosen, who was signed to the Browns' practice squad Thursday, for this role behind Brissett. However, it's uncertain where the current No. 2 quarterback will slot into Cleveland's depth chart once eventual starter Deshaun Watson returns from his 11-game suspension to start the regular season.
Aug 21, 2022
Scores in Sunday's start
Dobbs completed 14 of 20 passes for 141 yards and rushed four times for 47 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 21-20 preseason loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs started and played the entire first half as well as Cleveland's opening series of the third quarter. He led the Browns to scores on each of his four drives, including a three-yard touchdown rush of his own during the first quarter. After a successful showing, Dobbs handed a 20-14 lead over to Josh Rosen, who subsequently completed just 7 of 20 passes for 88 yards. Based on that contrast, it's fair to say Dobbs outperformed Rosen, as the pair compete to serve as Jacoby Brissett's backup heading into the regular season, when fellow quarterback Deshaun Watson will be suspended for the first 11 games.
Aug 21, 2022
Draws Sunday start
Dobbs will start Sunday's preseason game against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
With Deshaun Watson and Jacoby Brissett not in line to play Sunday, Dobbs will draw the start versus Philadelphia, with Josh Rosen next in line to see QB snaps. Given that Watson will be suspended to begin the 2022 season, as things stand either Dobbs or Rosen are in line to serve as Brissett's top backup in Week 1.
Aug 19, 2022
Frontrunner for backup job
Dobbs is currently the favorite to open the season as the Browns' backup quarterback, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday that Dobbs remains ahead of Josh Rosen for the backup job behind Jacoby Brissett but it's still an active competition. Dobbs joined the Browns this offseason after spending the 2021 campaign as a member of the Steelers, failing to enter any games during the season.
Aug 13, 2022
Leads all scoring drives
Dobbs completed 10 of 13 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown in Friday's 24-13 win over Jacksonville in preseason action.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs led the offense's three scoring drives -- the defense produced one touchdown -- and got the bulk of the snaps at quarterback after the coaching decision to rest top backup Jacoby Brissett. There are no changes in the quarterback depth chart, as Brissett will fill in for Deshaun Watson, whose suspension will be at least six games. It is clear that Dobbs is the No. 3 ahead of Josh Rosen, who engineered the final three possessions.
Jul 27, 2022
Vying for backup job
Coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday that Dobbs has a leg up on Josh Rosen to be the team's third quarterback behind Jacoby Brissett, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
If Deshaun Watson is suspended prior to Week 1 as expected, that would make Dobbs the Browns' de facto number two option. That might make him worthy of stashing in uber-deep two-quarterback leagues, as Cleveland figures to be playing from behind often as long as Watson is out, and Dobbs does possess the tools to produce as a rusher if nothing else.
Apr 9, 2022
Lands with Browns
Dobbs agreed to a one-year deal with the Browns on Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs had a tryout with the Ravens earlier in the week, but he'll sign with another AFC North team. He hasn't taken the field since 2020 since he missed last season due to a toe injury, but he's healthy heading into the offseason and will compete for a depth role behind starter Deshaun Watson heading into 2022.
Apr 4, 2022
Earns tryout
Dobbs received a tryout with the Ravens on Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs missed the 2021 season with a toe injury, but it appears the injury is behind him. The 27-year-old last suited up for the Steelers in 2020, where he played a total of nine snaps. The Ravens currently have no one behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley on their quarterback positional depth chart, so there is room for Dobbs on the roster, if he impressed enough in his workout.
Aug 31, 2021
Hits injured reserve
The Steelers placed Dobbs (toe) on injured reserve Tuesday, Ed Bouchette of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs is dealing with a toe injury, and the timing of the transaction rules him out for the 2021 season, barring an injury settlement. For the time being, the Steelers have both Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins on the roster behind Ben Roethlisberger.
Aug 27, 2021
Picks up toe injury
Dobbs sustained a toe injury during Friday's preseason loss at Carolina, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs didn't get on the field until the Steelers' second drive of the second half, entering the game after a miserable performance from Dwayne Haskins. During his four drives, Dobbs went 6-for-11 for 35 passing yards and had a 12-yard carry before exiting and handing the offense back to Haskins. According to coach Mike Tomlin, Dobbs may have a turf toe injury, which, if he's diagnosed as such, could keep the fifth-year pro sidelined for some time and give Haskins a direct path to the No. 3 QB job behind Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph.
Jan 28, 2020
Limited to reserve duty
Dobbs didn't see the field with the Jaguars in 2019.
ANALYSIS
Dobbs was acquired by the Jaguars from the Steelers after Nick Foles broke his collarbone in the season opener, but rookie Gardner Minshew played extremely well in Foles' absence and eventually took full control of the starting job. All three quarterbacks remain under contract for 2020, leaving Dobbs as the low man on the totem pole with minimal job security.
