Keep up with the latest injuries from the Jaguars vs Cardinals game on Sunday with our National Football League injury report.Nov 17, 2025
Joins Jags' practice squad
The Jaguars signed Thornhill to their practice squad Monday.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old safety was dropped by the Steelers on Nov. 10 but has quickly found a new home in Jacksonville. Thornhill appeared in nine games for the Steelers this season, recording 38 total tackles and one pass defended across 313 defensive snaps. He could be elevated to the Jaguars' active roster and play a depth role in the team's secondary as the season progresses.
Nov 10, 2025
Cut by Pittsburgh
Thornhill was released by the Steelers on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill has played in all nine contests with Pittsburgh this season, recording 38 total tackles (23 solo) and a pass defensed. The 30-year-old played sparingly in the last two contests though, as Jalen Ramsey has taken over as the team's starting free safety. Thornhill will now be subject to waivers, and if he goes unclaimed, he'll enter free agency.
Oct 1, 2025
Three tackles against Minnesota
Thornhill recorded three tackles (two solo) in the Steelers' win over the Vikings on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
DeShon Elliott and Chuck Clark started at safety for the Steelers against Minnesota, but Thornhill out-snapped Clark 50 to 31 behind Elliott's 100 percent playing-time clip. Through four games, Thornhill has recorded 25 tackles (14 solo), one pass breakup and one fumble recovery.
Sep 23, 2025
Takes back seat in loss
Thornhill recorded six tackles (three solo) during Sunday's 21-14 win at New England.
ANALYSIS
Jabrill Peppers saw his first defensive snaps of the season in Week 3, and they mostly came at the expense of Thornhill, who only played 26 of the Steelers' 71 defensive snaps. Things will only get complicated further when DeShon Elliott (knee) comes back into the fold, so Thornhill's role in Pittsburgh's defensive backfield looks like it might be on shaky ground as the season develops.
Sep 9, 2025
Records eight tackles in victory
Thornhill recorded eight tackles (four solo) and one fumble recovery in the Steelers' win over the Jets on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
While Thornhill didn't start the game, he did play 84 percent of the defensive snaps. With DeShon Elliott suffering a knee injury that already has him ruled out for Week 2 against Seattle, both Thornhill and Chuck Clark should see elevated playing time on the back end of Pittsburgh's defense.
Mar 17, 2025
Inks deal with Pittsburgh
The Steelers are signing Thornhill to a one-year deal, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran safety from Virginia was designated a post-June 1 cut by the Browns in late February but will now remain in the AFC North after signing with the Steelers on Monday. Thornhill appeared in 22 games over his last two seasons in Cleveland, recording 103 total tackles and four passes defended. Now in Pittsburgh, the 29-year-old is expected to compete with DeShon Elliott for a starting safety position alongside Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Feb 24, 2025
In line to be released
Thornhill said Monday that the Browns have informed him he will be released at the start of the new league year in March, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill will be designated a post-June 1 cut, a move that will save Cleveland $3.2 million against the cap for 2025. The veteran safety has one year remaining on the three-year, $21 million contract he inked with the team back in 2023. Thornhill struggled with injuries during his Browns tenure, playing just 11 regular-season games in each of his two campaigns with the team. Down the stretch in 2024, Thornhill found himself splitting defensive reps relatively evenly with Ronnie Hickman.
Jan 10, 2025
Suits up for 11 games in 2024
Thornhill racked up 49 tackles (31 solo) and three passes defensed across 11 regular-season appearances with the Browns in 2024.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill has been limited to 11 regular-season games in both of his first seasons with the Browns, despite having logged 16 or more appearances in all four of his years with the Chiefs from 2019-22. He remains under contract with Cleveland for one more year, but at this point even if healthy, it's not a guarantee that the experienced safety will regain the playmaking ability that previously allowed him to rank as a fringe fantasy asset in IDP formats.
Dec 8, 2024
Returning for Week 14
Thornhill (calf) is active for Sunday's game against the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
A calf issue sidelined Thornhill for last Monday's loss against Denver, but the veteran safety will be able to return to action having missed just one contest. As a result, Ronnie Hickman could see less defensive snaps than he did last week. In the Browns' win over Pittsburgh in Week 12, Thornhill tallied seven tackles -- his second-highest total this season.
Dec 6, 2024
Questionable for Week 14
Thornhill (calf) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Steelers, Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill was able to practice in a limited capacity Thursday, and he has given himself a chance to return from a one-game absence due to a calf injury. Rodney McLeod and Ronnie Hickman both saw increased snap counts on defense in Week 13 against the Broncos, and the duo would continue to see additional work Sunday if Thornhill were to be sidelined.
Dec 5, 2024
Returns to practice Thursday
Thornhill (calf) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill was sidelined for Week 13 against the Broncos due to a calf injury, and he was estimated as a DNP on Wednesday's injury report. Thornhill's return to practice Thursday indicates he is progressing through his recovery, and if he's able to practice Friday, he'll give himself a chance to play against the Steelers on Sunday.
Dec 4, 2024
Estimated as DNP
Thornhill (calf) was listed as a DNP on Wednesday's practice estimate, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill was unable to practice all week leading up to this past Monday's game against the Broncos, which he is inactive for. The 2019 second-round pick will have two more chances this week to practice in at least a limited capacity ahead of Sunday's AFC North showdown against the Steelers. Thornhill has been sidelined for six of the Browns' 12 regular-season games due to a calf injury.
Nov 30, 2024
Ruled out for Week 13
Thornhill (calf) has been ruled out for Monday's game against the Broncos, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill may have aggravated his calf injury during the Browns' Week 12 win over the Steelers, which prevented him from practicing all week. His next opportunity to play will be Week 14 against Pittsburgh on Sunday, Dec. 8. In Thornhill's absence, Rodney McLeod and Ronnie Hickman are the top candidates to start at free safety alongside strong safety Grant Delpit.
Nov 29, 2024
Sits out practice again Friday
Thornhill (calf) was a non-participant in practice Friday, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill has opened the week with a pair of DNPs due to a calf injury he suffered Monday. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday that Thornhill is trending in the right direction for Monday Week 13 game, per Kelsey Russo of the Browns' official site, but the veteran safety may need to practice in some capacity Saturday in order to be able to suit up against Denver. If he can't suit up, Ronnie Hickman may move into a starting role.
Nov 28, 2024
Nursing calf injury
Thornhill (calf) was listed as a DNP on Thursday's injury report, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill missed five regular-season games earlier in the year due to a calf injury, and it appears he may have aggravated the issue during the Browns' Week 12 win over the Steelers. Thornhill will have two opportunities this week to practice in at least a limited capacity ahead of Monday's game against Denver. In his five regular-season games since returning from injured reserve in Week 7, Thornhill has logged 23 tackles (12 solo) and one pass defense.
Nov 25, 2024
Solid in divisional win
Thornhill recorded seven tackles (five solo) during Thursday's 24-19 win versus the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
He trailed in defensive snaps (32) behind veteran Rodney McLeod (37) for the second straight game in Week 12, but he posted his highest tackle total since Week 1 anyway. It remains to be seen whether that will translate to more involvement in Week 13 at Denver.
Oct 20, 2024
Set to return Week 7
Thornhill (calf) is active Week 7 against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill was activated from the IR on Saturday following a week of limited practices, paving the way for a return to action in Week 7. He hasn't seen the field since Week 1 against the Cowboys, when he served as the starting free safety, playing 95 percent of the team's defensive snaps and logging nine combined tackles.
Oct 19, 2024
Activated off IR
Thornhill (calf) has been activated off injured reserve ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Bengals, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill remains questionable for the contest. His status is unlikely to be confirmed until roughly 90 minutes before kickoff. The free safety has been on IR since suffering a calf injury in Week 1. He recorded nine tackles (eight solo) in that loss to the Cowboys.
Oct 16, 2024
Designated to return
Thornhill (calf) was designated to return from injured reserve Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill missed Cleveland's last five games after sustaining a calf injury late in the Browns' Week 1 loss to the Cowboys, but it now appears he's nearing a return to the field. The 28-year-old's participation Thursday and Friday will be the best indication of whether he can return for the Browns' Week 7 matchup against the Bengals. However, Cleveland must still activate Thornhill to its active roster in order for him to suit up Sunday.
Sep 11, 2024
Placed on IR
Thornhill (calf) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill suffered the injury late in Sunday's loss to the Cowboys, according to Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com, who relays that head coach Kevin Stefanski stated the Virginia product does have the potential to return this season. It's a tough blow to the Browns who will now be without their starting free safety for at least the next four weeks and are dealing with multiple injuries to their defense. Ronnie Hickman is expected to step up now in Thonrhill's stead.
Aug 12, 2024
Back at practice
Thornhill (illness) returned to practice with the Browns on Monday, Brad Stainbrook of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill missed Saturday's 23-10 loss to the Packers while recovering from an illness, though no starters participated in the game. The 28-year-old is expected to operate as Cleveland's starting free safety in 2024 and it's unclear if he'll see any action this preseason.
Aug 6, 2024
Dealing with illness
Thornhill missed Tuesday's practice as a result of an illness, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill will look to rest up and attempt to be ready to go for Saturday's preseason opener against the Packers. Regardless of if he's feeling better or not, it's unlikely that the safety will see much action, if any, versus Green Bay.
Mar 11, 2024
Browns want more in 2024
Thornhill posted 54 tackles and one pass defensed over 11 regular-season games in 2023.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill had a noticeable drop-off in production from his days with the Chiefs. Both the team and the player expected more after Thornhill signed a three-year deal a year ago, and the Browns need more of his previous version this coming season. There was a nagging calf injury, and he may never have been completely healthy. Thornhill is expected to rejoin Grant Delpit (groin) on the back end of the Browns' defense.
Jan 13, 2024
Available Saturday
Thornhill (calf) is good to go for Saturday's wild-card matchup with the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill sat out the Browns' regular-season finale, but it looks like his health recovered in time for Saturday's tilt. Look for him to resume his usual responsibilities at safety assuming he avoids any setbacks.
Jan 11, 2024
Questionable for Saturday's matchup
Thornhill (calf) is listed as questionable for the Browns' wild-card game versus the Texans on Saturday, Mary Kay Cabot of Celveland.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill is in danger of missing his second consecutive game after sitting out the team's Week 18 loss to Cincinnati with a calf injury. The Browns are now at risk of being without both starting safeties for Saturday's matchup as Grant Delpit (groin) has already been ruled out, and if Thornhill ends up being unable to play Ronnie Hickman should start in his place.
Jan 10, 2024
Makes return to practice
Thornhill (calf) was a limited participant at practice Wednesday, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
After missing the Browns' regular-season finale and being listed as a non-participant at practice Tuesday, Thornhill was able to take a positive step Wednesday towards possibly suiting up for the wild-card round. He'll still likely need to manage a full practice Thursday to avoid carrying an injury designation into Friday and potentially gameday.
Jan 5, 2024
Won't suit up at Cincy
Thornhill (calf) is out for Sunday's game at Cincinnati, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill unexpectedly appeared on the Browns' injury report Thursday with a calf issue, and now he'll miss his sixth game of the season in Week 18. In his absence, Ronnie Hickman may start at safety Sunday.
Jan 4, 2024
Pops up on injury report
Thornhill (calf) was a limited participant at the Browns' practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill popped up on the injury report Thursday with an apparent calf injury, putting his status in question for Sunday's regular season finale versus the Bengals. The safety will look to return to a full workload at Friday's final session of the week, after which Cleveland's injury designations for Week 18 will be reported.
Dec 31, 2023
Quiet day Thursday
Thornhill recorded four tackles (three solo) in Thursday's 37-20 win versus the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Despite leading Cleveland's safeties in snaps in Week 17 (55), Thornhill was only able to tally four total tackles in his return from his calf injury. He continues to play relatively well in coverage though, so he will likely retain a near every-down role in Week 18 at Cincinnati.
Dec 28, 2023
Active Thursday
Thornhill (calf) is active for Thursday's game against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
The starting free safety will return after missing three straight games. Thornhill has 50 tackles and a pass defensed in 10 appearances this season.
Dec 27, 2023
Questionable for Thursday vs. Jets
Thornhill (calf) is questionable for Thursday's game versus the Jets, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill is in jeopardy of missing a fourth consecutive game due to a calf injury he sustained during pregame of Week 14. If he's out again in Week 17, Ronnie Hickman will probably make the start at safety.
Dec 25, 2023
Listed as limited
Thornhill (calf) is listed as limited on Monday's practice estimate, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill is looking to return from a three-game absence due to a calf injury. His limited participation Monday is a positive sign for his status ahead of Thursday's game against the Jets, but his status will need to continue being monitored. Ronnie Hickman would presumably continue starting in Cleveland's secondary if Thornhill does not get the green light.
Dec 22, 2023
No go for Week 16
Thornhill (calf) has been ruled out for Sunday's contest against the Texans, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill will miss a third straight contest due to the calf injury he's been dealing with for over a month. In his place, Ronnie Hickman will likely draw another start in Cleveland's secondary.
Dec 20, 2023
Still tending to injury
Thornhill (calf) did not participate in Wednesday's walkthrough practice, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill hasn't played or practiced each of the last two weeks, and his absence continues as Week 16 prep begins. The Virginia product will work to get back on the practice field Thursday in hopes of returning Sunday against the Texans.
Dec 15, 2023
Won't play vs. Bears
Thornhill (calf) is out for Sunday's game versus the Bears, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill will miss his second straight game Sunday due to a calf injury. In his absence, Ronnie Hickman will probably start at safety next to D'Anthony Bell against a run-heavy Chicago offense.
Dec 13, 2023
DNP to start week
Thornhill (calf) did not participate in Wednesday's pracitce.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill was set to return for Week 14 against the Jaguars after playing through a calf injury the two weeks prior, but he aggravated the issue during pregame warmups and sat out for the contest. His practice participation this week will provide more clarity on his availability for Sunday's game against the Bears.
Dec 10, 2023
Won't play Sunday
Thornhill sustained a calf injury during pregame activities and was ruled out shortly before Sunday's game against Jacksonville, Jake Trotter of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill has dealt with a lingering calf issue throughtout the season and sidelined him for two contests, including the Week 11 win against Pittsburgh. While he's played every game over the last two games and carried no injury designation Sunday morning, it appears he aggravated the issue just before this 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, causing him to be ruled a last-minute scratch. Across 10 starts this season, the 28-year-old has recorded 50 tackles and one pass defended. With Thornhill out, rookie Ronnie Hickman will step up into a starting role Sunday.
Dec 8, 2023
Ready for Sunday
Thornhill (calf) has no injury designation ahead of Sunday's game against the Jaguars, Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old safety was a full participant in Friday's practice, and it now seems as if he's had enough time to move past his calf issue. Thornhill has appeared in 10 games in his first season with the Browns, logging 50 total tackles and one pass deflection.
Dec 6, 2023
Misses practice Wednesday
Thornhill (calf) did not participate at the Browns' practice Wednesday, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill has played through his calf issue each of the last two weeks, even leading the team with seven tackles in Cleveland's 36-19 loss to the Rams, so his absence at practice to open the week isn't particularly concerning. The safety will look to return to the field at some point ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Jaguars at home.
Dec 5, 2023
Leading tackler in loss
Thornhill logged seven total tackles (five solo) in Sunday's 36-19 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
The 2019 second-round pick tallied his fourth game of seven stops on the season in Week 13, and he tied Martin Emerson for the team's leading tackler. Thornhill has had a productive year in his first season with Cleveland, recording 50 total tackles and one pass deflection through 10 appearances. The 28-year-old and the Browns' defense will look to rebound against a Jaguars team that will likely be without star quarterback Trevor Lawrence (ankle) in Week 14.
Dec 1, 2023
Will play Sunday at Rams
Thornhill (calf) does not carry an injury designation into Sunday's game at the Rams, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
As he did in Week 12, it seems like Thornhill will be able to play through the calf issue he's nursing in Week 13. He was not on a pitch count in the Browns' loss at Denver in their last contest, so it's reasonable to expect he'll play a full complement of snaps again Sunday.
Nov 29, 2023
Still dealing with calf injury
Thornhill (calf) will not participate at practice Wednesday, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill was able to play through his calf issue in Sunday's loss at Denver, but he's now missing the Browns' first practice of the new week as he tends to the injury. He'll likely need to practice in some capacity Thursday or Friday to give himself a chance to play in Week 13 - and it would be surprising if he wasn't able to.
Nov 26, 2023
Set to play Week 12
Thornhill (calf) is active for Sunday's game against the Broncos, Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill sustained a calf injury in Week 10 against the Browns and missed the following week against the Steelers. He was able to string together two consecutive limited practice sessions leading up to Sunday's game and will suit up for the contest. Thornhill has 37 tackles (27 solo) in eight games this season.
Nov 24, 2023
Questionable for Week 12
Thornhill (calf) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Broncos, Mark Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill missed the team's Week 11 win over the Steelers, but he has a chance to return Sunday in Denver. Rookie Ronnie Hickman would likely see additional playing time at free safety again if Thornhill remains sidelined against the Broncos.
Nov 23, 2023
Upgrades activity level
Thornhill (calf) was listed as limited on Thursday's injury report, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill was absent from the Browns' Week 11 win over the Steelers and after sitting out Wednesday's practice, the Virginia product appears to be trending in the right direction, but he should still be considered questionable. His practice status for Friday could bring more clarity there on his chances of suiting up against the Broncos on Sunday.
Nov 22, 2023
Misses Wednesday's practice
Thornhill (calf) will not participate at practice Wednesday, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill sat out of Sunday's win versus the Steelers due to a calf injury, and he's now missing the Browns' first practice of the new week. Unless he can practice in some capacity Thursday or Friday, he'll likely be sidelined again in Week 12.
Nov 17, 2023
Won't play vs. Steelers
Thornhill (calf) is listed as out for Sunday's game versus Pittsburgh, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill will be sidelined for the second time this season in Week 11 as he nurses a calf injury he sustained in Week 10 at Baltimore. In his absence, Rodney McLeod will probably start at safety next to Grant Delpit on Sunday.
Nov 12, 2023
Will not return
Thornhill (calf) has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Browns, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill exited early in the second half with the injury and was originally labeled questionable to return. However, the Virginia product will not be able to return, which should leave extra work for Rodney McLeod.
Nov 12, 2023
Questionable to return
Thornhill is considered questionable to return to Sunday's game versus the Ravens due to a calf injury, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill tallied three tackles (two solo) before exiting the contest. It remains to be seen if he will be able to return. In his absence, Rodney McLeod is the likely candidate to fill in at free safety.
Oct 30, 2023
Leads team in tackles
Thornhill logged seven tackles (six solo) in Cleveland's 24-20 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill led the Browns in tackles during Sunday's loss and has now compiled seven or more tackles in three of the past four games. The 28-year-old is currently on pace for a new career high in tackles and will look to continue producing versus the Cardinals next week.
Sep 18, 2023
Cleared for Monday Night Football
Thornhill (calf) is active for Monday's matchup against the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill missed the season opener due to a calf injury and was listed as questionable for Week 2. The 2019 second-round pick will be available to make his Browns debut Monday night, but it's unclear how big of a role he'll have right away. However, eventually, Thornhill should take over as a full-time starter.
Sep 16, 2023
Gets questionable tag
Thornhill (calf) is listed as questionable for Monday's matchup with the Steelers, Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill is in danger of missing his second straight game to start the season. If he is is ultimately unable to go, Rodney McLeod would presumably be in line to fill in at free safety.
Sep 14, 2023
Still recovering from injury
Thornhill (calf) did not practice Thursday, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill is being considered day-to-day, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski. The Virginia product was unable to play Week 1 against the Bengals; however, it sounds like he may be able to return to the practice field soon. Even if he does though, the fourth-year pro may still not be ready to suit up Monday against the Steelers.
Sep 10, 2023
Inactive against Bengals
Thornill (calf) is inactive Week 1 against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill was able to get through morning workouts Sunday, but the team decided his calf injury needed more time to heal. Per Zac Jackson of The Athletic, Rodney McLeod will get the starting nod at free safety in Thornhill's stead.
Sep 8, 2023
Questionable for Week 1
Thornhill (calf) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill was limited Wednesday before missing practice Thursday, so he sounds truly questionable to be out there for Week 1. Rodney McLeod would be next up at safety alongside Grant Delpit if Thornhill can't play.
Mar 15, 2023
Inks deal with Cleveland
The Browns agreed to terms with Thornhill on a three-year contract Wednesday, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill will sign with the Browns coming off his career-best campaign with the Chiefs in 2022, logging 71 tackles, nine passes defended, three interceptions and a sack over 16 regular-season games. The specific dollar figures of his deal with Cleveland are still unknown, though it figures to be a fairly significant contract given his consistent production over the past four seasons with Kansas City. Thornhill figures to immediately step in as the Browns' starting free safety alongside Grant Delpit as the team also transitions to new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz this coming season.
Jan 17, 2023
Career-high output in 2022
Thornhill registered a career-best 71 tackles (43 solo), three interceptions and a sack over 16 games during the 2022 season.
ANALYSIS
Aside from a slight downturn in his second season, Thornhill has churned out consistent campaigns on the back end of Kansas City's defense throughout his rookie contract. However, he's scheduled to hit free agency this offseason, so the Chiefs' brass will need to decide whether they want to keep him in town or allow him to explore free agency. The Chiefs have some wiggle room from a cap standpoint and not a ton of starters set to hit free agency this season, so the team could make a run at extending Thornhill.
Dec 13, 2022
Makes all-around impact Week 14
Thornhill posted seven tackles (five solo), including one sack, and a pass defended in Sunday's 34-28 victory over the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill contributed one of his team' six sacks in this impressive outing for the Kansas City defense. The fourth-year safety also logged two more tackles against Denver quarterback Russell Wilson, who was forced out with a concussion early in the fourth quarter. Thornhill has now played every defensive snap since returning form his one-game hiatus due to a calf injury, totaling 17 tackles over these two contests. Expect him to continue slotting in as one of the Chiefs' top defenders Week 15 in Houston.
Dec 6, 2022
10 stops in return
Thornhill compiled 10 tackles (six solo) in Sunday's 27-24 defeat against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill returned to his every-down role following a one-game absence with a calf injury. As a result, the safety finished with the Chiefs' second-most tackles behind prolific linebacker Nick Bolton (16). Thornhill also had what would have been his second interception of the season wiped away due to a defensive pass interference penalty by cornerback Trent McDuffie on the opening series of the game. Nevertheless, Thornhill still ranks second on the team in passes defended (six) this season, and he should play a prominent role in stopping the Broncos' paltry pass offense Week 14.
Nov 30, 2022
Back at practice Wednesday
Thornhill (calf) was a full participant at practice Wednesday ahead of Sunday's game at Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill missed his first game of the 2022 season in Week 12 versus the Rams, but he now appears to be trending towards returning in Week 13. Kansas City's secondary will have a tough task ahead of them Sunday, lining up opposite Ja'Marr Chase (hip) and Tee Higgins.
Nov 27, 2022
Missing first game of the year
Thornhill is listed as inactive for Sunday's game against the Rams due to a calf injury.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill sustained a calf injury during the Chiefs' Week 11 matchup versus the Chargers, ultimately leading to limited sessions on both Wednesday and Thursday, followed by no activity in Friday's practice. With the 27-year-old sidelined this weekend, expect Bryan Cook to operate as one of the team's starting safeties alongside Justin Reid.
Nov 25, 2022
Questionable for Sunday vs. Rams
Thornhill (calf) did not participate at practice Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game vs. the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Limited practices Wednesday and Thursday would have seemed to have indicated that Thornhill was on track to play in Week 12, but his absence Friday casts a thick shadow over that proposition. Should Thornhill miss his first game of the 2022 season Sunday, rookie second-rounder Bryan Cook would likely be in line to start alongside Justin Reid at safety.
Nov 20, 2022
Won't return Sunday
Thornhill has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Chargers due to a calf injury.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill recorded three tackles (one solo) in the first half of Sunday's matchup but was ruled out shortly after halftime. Deon Bush will likely see increased work for Kansas City down the stretch, while it's not yet clear whether Thornhill will be available for next Sunday's game against the Rams.
Oct 25, 2022
Career-best outing in Sunday's win
Thornhill recorded 11 tackles (nine solo), one interception and two passes defensed during Sunday's 44-23 win over the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill set a new career high with 11 tackles in Sunday's matchup versus the 49ers, while he also snatched his first interception of the season in the contest. Additionally, the 27-year-old was the only Chiefs' player to play 100 percent of the team's defensive snaps. Thornhill now enters Kansas City's bye week with full momentum, and he'll attempt to replicate a similar performance in Week 9 against the Titans.
Dec 7, 2021
Notches first INT of 2021
Thornhill recorded six tackles (four solo) and his first interception of the season Sunday versus the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill's rookie season drew some buzz thanks to a trio of interceptions and a promising tackle total (58). While he has just one interception in each of the last two seasons -- 2021 still has some time for him to add to it -- Thornhill seems to be trending up in his tackle count. If he maintains his current pace, the third-year safety would finish out the season with a career-best of about 64 tackles.

Records nine tackles
Thornhill had nine tackles (seven solo) during Sunday's 27-3 loss at Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill made his second consecutive start at free safety in the blowout loss, and he's played all but three defensive snaps between the two contests. The 26-year-old had strong production Sunday but is unlikely to be an IDP option going forward.

Moving into starting role
The Chiefs plan to start Thornhill at free safety in Sunday's game in Washington ahead of Daniel Sorensen, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Perhaps no player in the Chiefs' much-maligned defense has struggled as much as Sorensen, who Pro Football Focus ranks as its 83rd safety among the 85 players at the position who have played 100-plus snaps this season. In addition to missing nine tackles -- 20.5 percent of his overall opportunities, per Pro Football Reference -- Sorensen has also been responsible for a 153.8 passer rating when targeted in coverage this season. The Chiefs are hoping that Thornhill can provide an upgrade at the back end, and even if he's not a standout performer in real-life terms, he should have ample opportunities to record statistics. Thanks in part to his own shortcomings in coverage, Sorensen still racked up 35 tackles through five games, a total that ranks tied for 13th among secondary players.

Recovered from groin injury
Thornhill (groin) wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill's full participation in practice Wednesday indicates that he's no longer bothered by the groin injury he sustained in early August. With fellow safety Tyrann Mathieu's (illness) status for Sunday's season opener against the Browns in doubt, Thornhill regaining full health has become an even more important development for the Chiefs.

Suffers groin injury
Thornhill (groin) was injured during Monday's practice, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The severity of Thornhill's injury remains undisclosed. The Chiefs are counting on the third-year pro to start across from Tyrann Mathieu, so it may make sense to take a cautious approach to his recovery.
Oct 6, 2020
First interception of season
Thornhill recorded six tackles, all solo, and an interception across 73 defensive snaps in Monday's win over the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill secured his first interception of the season off Brian Hoyer late in the first quarter. The second-year pro has now played in 89 percent of the defensive snaps this season, recording 17 tackles in the process.

Leads Chiefs' Week 3 tackle count
Thornhill topped the Chiefs' defense with six tackles (five solo) Monday against the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Although he hasn't quite put up the numbers to suggest a repeat of his rookie season, Thornhill and Tyrann Mathieu were the only two players to play every defensive snap Monday. He should continue to see consistent action at safety moving forward but his numbers haven't put him on too many IDP radars just yet.

Cleared for full contact
Thornhill (knee) has been cleared for full-contact participation in practice, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill's recovery from a torn ACL has been a swift one, as he suffered the injury in just Week 17 of last season. He's reportedly looked as explosive as ever since retaking the field and should be in line to retake his spot as the team's starting safety alongside Tyrann Mathieu come Week 1.

Logs limited practice
Thornhill (knee) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill just passed his physical in order to come off the active/PUP list Wednesday, so it's no surprise to see him being eased back into the mix. The 24-year-old is coming off an impressive rookie season, so he's well positioned to serve as the Chiefs' top free safety when fully recovered. However, it remains to be seen if he'll have returned to full health by the season-opener against Houston.

Comes off PUP list
The Chiefs activated Thornhill (knee) from the active/PUP list Wednesday after he passed a physical, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill capped his rookie season with a torn ACL in his left knee Week 17, causing the 2019 second-rounder to miss the Chiefs' Super Bowl run. He's made significant progress in his rehab, though, and appears ready to partake in practice in some capacity. It remains to be seen if Thornhill will be ready for a Week 1 matchup with the Texans on Sept. 10. If he's able to suit up, he likely will serve as the team's starting free safety.

Placed on PUP list
The Texans placed Thornhill (knee) on the PUP list Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill missed the Chiefs' Super Bowl run after tearing the ACL in his left knee Week 17. There's some hope he'll be healthy by the regular season, but he has yet to recover enough to avoid Friday's move. When he does achieve full health -- or at least enough to get back on the field -- the 2019 second-round pick will man free safety for Kansas City.

On track for training camp
Thornhill (knee) is expected to be healthy in time for the start of training camp, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the regular-season finale, but he appears to be progressing well in his recovery. Thornhill could still be eased into action early on, but there's no indications his status for the start of the season will be in question.

Expected back for Week 1
The Chiefs expect Thornhill (knee) to be ready for the 2020 regular-season opener, James Palmer of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornhill is rehabbing a torn ACL sustained during Kansas City's 2019 regular-season finale, and it looks as though the expectation is for him to make at least a partial return during training camp. The 24-year-old started a full 16-game slate as a rookie, recording 58 tackles (42 solo), five defended passes and three interceptions (one of which he returned for a touchdown).
Dec 29, 2019
Serious injury feared
Thornhill will have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of a knee injury that forced him out of Sunday's win against the Chiefs, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Chiefs fear Thornhill's injury could be serious enough to keep the rookie second-round pick out for the playoffs. The Virginia product has been a starter at free safety since Week 1, and he's recorded 58 tackles, five pass breakups and three interceptions. The results of the MRI will be available at some point Monday, and Daniel Sorensen is next in line to start if Thornhill is indeed ruled out.
Dec 29, 2019
Done for day
Thornhill (knee) is out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
The fact that Thornhill was immediately downgraded to out is not a good sign for the injury, especially considering he exited early in the second quarter. With the Virginia product sidelined, look for Daniel Sorensen to take over as the team's starting free safety. More information regarding Thornhill's injury should arise heading into the playoffs.
