Juwan Johnson Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Falcons vs Saints game on Sunday with our National Football League injury report.Nov 9, 2025
Career-best day in win
Johnson caught all four of his targets for 92 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 17-7 win over the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
The tight end put together a career-best day in terms of yardage, including a 30-yard touchdown from rookie quarterback Tyler Shough in the fourth quarter, the second straight game in which the duo has connected for a score. Johnson is having a breakout campaign in his sixth NFL season, putting together a 43-491-3 line on 61 targets through 10 games heading into the Saints' bye week.
Nov 2, 2025
Catches TD in loss
Johnson recorded three receptions (on four targets) for 31 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 34-10 loss versus the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Johnson hauled in the lone passing touchdown for rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, who made his first career start for the Saints. This was the tight end's first touchdown since Week 2, and he tied with Chris Olave for the team's second-most targets behind WR2 Rashid Shaheed (nine). New Orleans' offense has been one of the worst-performing units in the NFL this season, but Johnson is on pace for the most productive campaign of his six-year career. Through nine games, he is just 11 catches and 149 receiving yards shy of his career-best marks from last year. The Saints next face the divisional-rival Panthers in Week 10 on Sunday.
Oct 27, 2025
Solid outing in Week 8 loss
Johnson caught 5 of 8 targets for 53 yards during Sunday's 23-3 loss versus the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson logged five catches on at least seven targets for the second week in a row. The tight end once again finished third on the team in targets, receptions, and yards behind wide receivers Chris Olave (12-8-63) and Rashid Shaheed (12-9-75). The Saints benched starting quarterback Spencer Rattler for rookie Tyler Shough in the third quarter, as the passing offense continued to struggle in this game. New Orleans still logged 51 passing attempts as a team. If the team continues to air it out while playing from behind, then Johnson's fantasy production should benefit with a healthy number of targets going forward. New Orleans' next game will come versus the Rams in Week 8.
Oct 24, 2025
Cleared to face Tampa
Johnson (neck) won't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson started the week as a limited practice participant, listed with a new injury after playing through a minor ankle issue earlier in October. He's coming off a 79-yard performance in Chicago but has otherwise failed to maintain his momentum after a strong start to the season (at least in fantasy terms).
Oct 23, 2025
Remains limited in practice
Johnson (neck) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Though his limited listing represented no change from Wednesday, Johnson may have been cleared to take part in more drills Thursday than he had a day earlier. According to Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana, the tight end was sporting a standard practice jersey during Thursday's session, after he had donned a red non-contact jersey Wednesday. Johnson may need to participate fully in Friday's practice to avoid taking a designation into Sunday's game versus the Buccaneers, but he looks to be on a path to playing this weekend.
Oct 22, 2025
Limited in practice
Johnson (neck) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a new injury for Johnson, who caught five of seven targets for 79 yards in a 26-14 loss at Chicago on Sunday. He handled a 71 percent snap share and 81 percent route share in the contest, not showing any clear sign of injury.
Oct 19, 2025
Big afternoon in loss
Johnson brought in five of seven targets for 79 yards in the Saints' 26-14 loss to the Bears on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The veteran tight end tied Chris Olave for the team lead in receptions while checking in as the runner-up to him in receiving yards. Johnson's yardage total was a new season high and his best since Week 1 of the season, while his target tally was just two fewer than the combined number of looks he'd seen in the previous three games. Sunday's level of involvement was particularly encouraging considering the availability of both Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau, and Johnson should continue to be a focal point of the offense in a Week 8 home matchup against a Buccaneers defense that's notoriously generous to tight ends.
Oct 19, 2025
Bounces back in Week 7 loss
Johnson accrued five receptions (on seven targets) for 79 yards during Sunday's 26-14 defeat to the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Johnson posted a season high in receiving yards following three straight underwhelming performances with fewer than 30 receiving yards. The 29-year-old had a slow start before heating up in the second half, catching all four of his targets for 73 yards. Johnson has now posted at least five catches in four of seven games this season, and he's consistently been the Saints' No. 3 pass catcher behind wideouts Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, who logged seven and nine targets, respectively. The tight end will look to catch his second touchdown of the season when the Saints next play versus the Buccaneers in Week 8.
Oct 13, 2025
Fumbles in Week 6 defeat
Johnson reeled in both of his targets for 15 yards during Sunday's 25-19 defeat against the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Johnson suited up after dealing with an ankle issue during practice for the second week in a row. The 29-year-old also logged exactly two catches for the second straight contest, as he recorded season lows in targets and receiving yards. The lowlight of Johnson's performance came on his second catch when he coughed up a fumble in the fourth quarter. Johnson went from averaging 9.7 targets per game over the first three weeks to averaging 3.0 over the last three weeks. This downturn in opportunities has coincided with the overall decrease in passing attempts for the Saints across the last three games, so it appears his dropoff in production may continue so long as the New Orleans offense eases its reliance on Spencer Rattler's arm. Johnson will look to grab more passes during the Week 7 contest versus Chicago on Sunday, Sept. 19.
Oct 10, 2025
Cleared to play
Johnson (ankle) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Patriots, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports.
ANALYSIS
The minor ankle injury is less of a concern than Johnson's recent drop in production -- six targets and 45 yards over the past two games -- combined with the recent returns of fellow tight ends Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau. Johnson took 85 percent of snaps in a Week 5 win over the Giants, but that was actually his season low, with the number having dropped by a few percentage points with each passing game since he took 99 percent of snaps in Week 1. He may soon run out of chances to prove that his surprising September production wasn't just a mirage.
Oct 9, 2025
Stays limited Thursday
Johnson (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
With back-to-back capped sessions under his belt to begin Week 6 prep, Johnson has one more chance to prove the health of his ankle Friday before the Saints potentially tag him with a designation ahead of Sunday's contest against the Patriots. He played through the issue during a Week 5 win versus the Giants and handled a typical 85 percent snap share, but he managed just two catches (on four targets) for 17 yards.
Oct 8, 2025
Limited Wednesday
Johnson (ankle) practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson also tended to an ankle injury last week, but he was able to suit up for this past Sunday's win against the Giants and logged a typical 85 percent snap share on his way to two catches (on four targets) for 17 yards. He'll have a pair of practices to get back to full this week, or else risk entering the weekend with a designation for Sunday's game versus the Patriots.
Oct 5, 2025
Role shrinks in Week 5 win
Johnson caught two of four targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 26-14 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The tight end produced his worst numbers of 2025, and while the returns of Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau from knee injuries didn't cut into Johnson's workload at all -- he was on the field for 56 offensive snaps (85 percent) -- Spencer Rattler and the Saints' offense did make an effort to attack downfield more than they had in the first month of the year. That change may have had more to do with the quality of the Giants' secondary than it did any growth in Rattler's game, but the window for Johnson to be a reliable fantasy option may be closing rapidly. He'll try to bounce back in Week 6 against the Patriots.
Oct 5, 2025
Suiting up Sunday
Johnson (ankle) is listed as active Sunday against the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was contained to a pair of limited practices during Week 5 prep due to an ankle injury, but he'll ditch his questionable designation and be available to New Orleans offense Sunday. He's welcoming back fellow TEs Taysom Hill (knee) and Foster Moreau (knee) to the lineup for the first time this season, but Johnson still should remain the most consistent pass catcher among the trio for QB Spencer Rattler. Johnson has racked up a respectable 22-204-1 line on 32 targets in four games on the campaign.
Oct 3, 2025
Status in question for Sunday
Johnson (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game versus the Giants, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson followed up Wednesday's absence due to an ankle injury with a limited session Thursday. He wasn't able to progress enough to avoid a designation in advance of the weekend, but his status nonetheless will be confirmed about 90 minutes before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff. Meanwhile, fellow TEs Taysom Hill (knee) and Foster Moreau (knee) also are listed as questionable, but the Saints will need to activate them from the reserve/PUP list by Saturday afternoon in order for them to have a chance to play Week 5.
Oct 2, 2025
Upgrades to limited Thursday
Johnson (ankle) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After being held out of drills Wednesday due to an ankle injury, Johnson was back on the practice field one day later, joining fellow TEs Taysom Hill (knee) and Foster Moreau (knee) as limited participants. Both Hill and Moreau had their practice windows opened to return from the reserve/PUP list this week, but there's no guarantee either player will be cleared for Week 5 action. As the active roster currently stands, Johnson is the Saints' clear-cut top option at the position, and his status may receive clarity once the team posts its final practice report of the week Friday.
Oct 1, 2025
DNP due to ankle issue
Johnson missed Wednesday's practice due to an ankle injury
ANALYSIS
This marks the first time this season that Johnson's practice reps have been impacted in any way, while fellow TEs Taysom Hill (knee, reserve/PUP list) and Foster Moreau (knee, reserve/PUP list), who had their practice windows opened this week, were both limited. It remains to be seen if Johnson's status is in peril for Sunday's game against the Giants, but he at least will have two more chances to mix into drills this week before the Saints potentially make a ruling on his availability for Week 5.
Sep 28, 2025
Limited production in Week 5 loss
Johnson gathered in all three of his targets for 28 yards during Sunday's 31-19 loss to Buffalo.
ANALYSIS
Johnson logged fewer than eight targets for the first time this season, finishing fifth on the team in this category behind wideouts Chris Olave (six), Rashid Shaheed (five) and Brandin Cooks (four) as well as running back Alvin Kamara (five). The Saints also logged more rushing attempts (34) than passing attempts (28) for the first time in 2025, as, unlike other games this season, the team didn't have to chase points while keeping the game within one score until midway through the fourth quarter. Johnson has been one of the top PPR tight ends this season, and he's now averaged 5.5 catches on 8.0 targets per game. He'll look to get back on track during next week's matchup versus the Giants on Sunday, Oct. 5.
Sep 21, 2025
Keeps producing as team loses
Johnson finished with six receptions on eight targets for 51 yards in Sunday's 44-13 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Johnson continued his early-season surge with another strong PPR effort despite his team suffering yet another loss. The veteran starter has been an early surprise in fantasy, racking up 19 receptions on 29 targets for 176 yards and a touchdown through three contests. Johnson has quickly become a must-start option at such a shallow fantasy position heading into next Sunday's road tilt against the Bills.
Sep 14, 2025
Makes impact again in Week 2
Johnson caught five of nine targets for 49 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 26-21 loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
For the second straight game Johnson saw impressive volume, finishing second on the Saints in targets behind Chris Olave's 10, and this time the tight end was able to turn one of them into a score as he caught an 18-yard strike from Spencer Rattler inside the final two minutes of the first half. Johnson only saw 66 targets in 17 regular-season games in 2024, but he's already gotten 21 in the first two games of the current campaign, leading to a 13-125-1 line. He could be headed for another big effort in Week 3 against a Seahawks defense that gave up two TDs to San Francisco TEs -- George Kittle (hamstring) and Jake Tonges -- in its opener, before allowing a combined 7-58-0 line on eight targets to Steelers' tight ends Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth in Week 2.
Sep 7, 2025
Leading receiver against Cards
Johnson caught eight of 11 targets for 76 yards in Sunday's 20-13 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Arizona's Trey McBride came into the game as the big-name tight end, but Johnson bested him in targets, catches and yards while posting game-high totals in the latter two categories. New Orleans' new offense under Kellen Moore could be a boon to all the team's top pass-catchers, as Spencer Rattler attempted a career-high 46 passes despite the game that the score remained fairly close the whole way, and his reliance on Johnson is especially promising for the 28-year-old TE. Johnson will look to make a splash again at home in Week 2 in a matchup against another elite player at his position, San Francisco's George Kittle.
Aug 11, 2025
Suits up for preseason loss
Johnson (groin) played with the first-team offense during New Orleans' 27-13 preseason loss to the Chargers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson didn't tally a counting stat while suiting up for just nine offensive snaps Sunday, but his participation serves as confirmation that he's fully recovered from the groin injury that sidelined him for roughly one week of training camp. As things currently stand in the Saints' tight end corps, with both Taysom Hill (knee) and Foster Moreau (knee) still on the active/PUP list, Johnson is operating as the team's No. 1 option without much competition for touches.
Aug 7, 2025
Another practice logged
Johnson (groin) took part in Thursday's practice, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After being sidelined for about one week due to a minor groin injury, Johnson has been able to log some activity in back-to-back sessions, but it's unclear if he's back to 100 percent just yet. With fellow TEs Taysom Hill (knee) and Foster Moreau (knee) still on the active/PUP list, Johnson would be the Saints' top option at the position for Sunday's preseason contest against the Chargers, assuming he's cleared to suit up.
Aug 5, 2025
Gets in limited practice
Johnson (groin) is practicing in a limited fashion Tuesday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson continues to work his way back from a minor groin injury sustained during practice last Wednesday, per Patrick McAvoy of SI.com. He figures to continue cautiously ramping up his activity level in advance of the Saints' preseason opener against the Chargers on Sunday. With Taysom Hill (knee) and Foster Moreau (knee) both recovering from knee procedures and on the active/PUP list, Johnson has a clear path to establishing himself as the No. 1 option at tight end for New Orleans.
Jul 31, 2025
Participates in individual drills
Johnson (undisclosed) took part in individual drills at Thursday's practice, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson returning as at least a limited participant Thursday lends optimism to the notion that the undisclosed injury he sustained Tuesday or Wednesday is indeed minor, and shouldn't hamper him for more than a few days. The 28-year-old veteran has surpassed 500 receiving yards in two of the last three seasons and is currently positioned as New Orleans' clear top tight end, with positional mates Taysom Hill (knee) and Foster Moreau (knee) on the active/PUP list. An quick return to team reps will be beneficial for Johnson, as he works to establish chemistry with QBs Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener.
Jul 30, 2025
Injury likely isn't serious
Johnson is expected to miss only a few days after suffering an undisclosed injury during Saints training camp, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kellen Moore wouldn't clarify whether Johnson's health concern occurred Tuesday or Wednesday, but the Saints should have some clarity Thursday once testing has been undertaken, per John Sigler of USA Today. Underhill's report indicates Johnson avoided anything significant, but with fellow TEs Taysom Hill (knee) and Foster Moreau (knee) on the active/PUP list, holding Johnson out of drills until he's healthy likely is a prudent approach.
Jul 30, 2025
Picks up undisclosed injury
Johnson (undisclosed) sustained an injury during training camp practices this week, John Sigler of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Saints head coach Kellen Moore declined to confirm whether Johnson's undisclosed injury occurred Wednesday or Tuesday, when New Orleans held a walkthrough before a team outing, but he said an update on the veteran tight end's health will arrive Thursday, after testing is complete. Johnson, who re-signed on a three-year, $30.75 million deal this offseason, has operated as the Saints' top tight end through the early portion of training camp, with Taysom Hill (knee) and Foster Moreau (knee) both on the PUP list.
Mar 11, 2025
Re-signs for three years
Johnson and the Saints agreed to terms Tuesday on a three-year, $30.75 million contract, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The initial report suggests the deal maxes out at $34.5 million and includes $21.25 million guaranteed. It looks like an overpay relative to other tight ends with similar receiving production, especially when considering how little Johnson offers as a blocker. A weak free-agent class may have been a factor, as Johnson would've been one of the better options amongst a weak crop if the Saints hadn't locked him up before he hit the open market. The 28-year-old averaged 2.6-2.8 receptions and 28-33 receiving yards per game each of the past three seasons, buoyed by strong finishes in 2023 and 2024 after not doing much for most of the year.
Jan 5, 2025
Logs six catches Week 18
Johnson notched six receptions (on seven targets) for 80 yards during Sunday's 27-19 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson recorded a season high in yards, and he logged a season-high six receptions for the second week in a row. He and fellow tight end Foster Moreau (knee) saw increased production over the final two weeks, as rookie Spencer Rattler started in place of injured quarterback Derek Carr (hand). New Orleans was also without starting running back Alvin Kamara (groin) and wideouts Chris Olave (concussion) and Rashid Shaheed (knee) for the final three weeks. Johnson finishes the 2024 campaign with 50 catches for 548 yards and three touchdowns season over 17 games. These marks represent his new career highs for receptions and yards, as he just surpassed his numbers from 2022 when he played 16 regular-season games. Johnson signed a one-year, $5.2 million contract with the Saints last July, and it's unclear if the team will re-sign him once again this coming offseason.
Jan 5, 2025
Active for Week 18
Johnson (knee) is active for Sunday's Week 18 matchup against the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
The veteran tight end practiced in limited fashion throughout the week, but Johnson, who's also played through a foot injury recently, will suit up for Sunday's regular-season finale. Johnson enters the divisional clash against the Buccaneers already sporting a new career high in receptions (44) and is coming off a game in which he produced a season-best 6-66 line on 10 targets against the Raiders in Week 17 while working with rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler, who'll once again be under center Sunday in place of Derek Carr (hand).
Jan 3, 2025
Questionable for Week 18
Johnson (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson swapped out a lingering foot issue for a knee injury this week, which resulted in limited listings on all three practice reports. His status for Week 18 will be clarified about 90 minutes before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, and if he's able to suit up, he likely will continue to split TE reps with Foster Moreau. Since Taysom Hill was lost for the season due to a torn ACL, Johnson has put up a 14-155-1 line on 20 targets over the last four games, while Moreau (11-159-2 line on 14 targets) has nearly matched his output.
Jan 2, 2025
Stays limited Thursday
Johnson (knee) practiced on a limited basis Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson maintained his activity level from one day prior, giving him just one more opportunity to return to full participation Friday, or else risk heading into the weekend with a designation ahead of Sunday's contest at Tampa Bay. He's been splitting TE reps with Foster Moreau over the last four games since Taysom Hill was lost for the season due to a torn ACL, and Johnson has compiled a 14-155-1 line on 20 targets during that span.
Jan 1, 2025
Dealing with knee injury
Johnson (knee) was limited at Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Prior to each of the previous four games, Johnson endured some practice restrictions due to a foot issue. Now, though, he's dealing with a knee injury, clouding his availability ahead of Sunday's contest at Tampa Bay. As a result, Johnson's status will be watched as the week goes on to get a sense of his potential to play this weekend.
Dec 29, 2024
Leading receiver in loss
Johnson caught six of 10 targets for 66 yards in Sunday's 25-10 loss to the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
He led the Saints in receptions, targets and yardage, but it was fellow tight end Foster Moreau who was on the other end of Spencer Rattler's only TD pass of the day. It was the first time all season Johnson had seen double-digit targets, but with the New Orleans' wide receiver gutted by injuries, the team's TEs figure to be busy again in Week 18 against the Buccaneers.
Dec 27, 2024
Cleared to face Raiders
Johnson (foot) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Johnson upgraded to full practice participation Friday following a pair of capped sessions, which helped him avoid an injury designation. He'll work as a security blanket for rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler, though that hasn't been a fruitful role, as Johnson has posted 50 receiving yards or fewer in every game this season.
Dec 26, 2024
Manages limited practice Thursday
Johnson (foot) was a limited practice participant Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson had his reps capped for the second day in a row as he continues to work through a foot issue that has resulted in the Saints listing him on injury reports for four consecutive weeks. He's managed to play in each of the previous three contests, and assuming he's experiencing no setbacks during his Week 17 prep, he should be ready to play Sunday against the Raiders. Even though he's played at least two-thirds of the offensive snaps in every game since the Saints' Week 12 bye, his fantasy prospects have taken a hit while Derek Carr (hand) has been out of the lineup the past two contests. Carr hasn't been officially ruled out for the Week 17 matchup with the Raiders but doesn't appear to be trending toward playing, likely putting Johnson on track to work with Spencer Rattler as his quarterback for at least one more game.
Dec 25, 2024
Continues to deal with foot issue
Johnson (foot) was estimated as limited on Wednesday's injury report.
ANALYSIS
This marks the fourth consecutive week that Johnson has been listed with a foot injury on Saints practice reports. On the first three occasions, he was able to suit up and combine for an 8-89-1 line on 10 targets during that span. Assuming his fate is similar this week, Johnson will continue to split TE reps with Foster Moreau in New Orleans' offense.
Dec 23, 2024
Two catches in lopsided loss
Johnson brought in both targets for 27 yards in the Saints' 34-0 loss to the Packers on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Johnson tied fellow tight end Foster Moreau and Dante Pettis for the team lead in receptions on a night where Spencer Rattler recorded only 15 completions. Johnson has only hit the 50-yard mark once all season, leaving him with little upside irrespective of which quarterback is under center for a Week 17 home matchup against the Raiders.
Dec 21, 2024
Ready for Monday
Johnson (foot) does not carry an injury designation ahead of Monday's contest against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson practiced in full Saturday clearing the way for the veteran tight end to play Monday. With Chris Olave (concussion) and Bub Means (ankle) out, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (chest/illness) listed as questionable despite failing to practice all week, Johnson might be the de-facto top target for backup quarterback Spencer Rattler.
Dec 20, 2024
Limited in practice
Johnson (foot) was a limited practice participant Friday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
He played through the same injury last week, catching two of three targets for 12 yards in a 20-19 loss to the Commanders while handling 71 percent snap share and 77 percent route share. Johnson's ability to log limited practices Thursday and Friday puts him on track to play Monday against the Packers, at which point he'll likely be catching passes from QB Spencer Rattler.
Dec 19, 2024
Remains limited by foot issue
Johnson (foot) was limited at practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
For a third week in a row, Johnson is tending to a foot injury, but he's been able to log a typical workload the last two games en route to six catches (on eight targets) for 62 yards and one touchdown. With Taysom Hill out for the season due to a torn ACL, Johnson and Foster Moreau have been handling the TE reps the last three games, and neither player has topped 50 receiving yards in any given week, while both have recorded one TD catch apiece. In any case, Johnson's status will be monitored as the week goes on to ensure he isn't in danger of sitting out Monday's visit to the Packers.
Dec 15, 2024
Logs 12 yards in loss
Johnson gathered in two of three targets for 12 yards during Sunday's 20-19 loss against Washington.
ANALYSIS
Johnson caught two passes from quarterback Spencer Rattler in the second half. The rookie signal-caller took over from Jake Haener, who was benched after the Saints went scoreless in the first half. Johnson had a chance to secure a comeback win after fellow tight end Foster Moreau caught a one-yard touchdown as time expired in the fourth quarter; but, Johnson failed to connect with Rattler on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt. Johnson had caught a touchdown pass in two of the previous three games, but he and Moreau have continued to negate one another fantasy's relevance by splitting snaps and targets. This will likely remain the case during next week's road contest at Green Bay on Monday, Dec. 23.
Dec 13, 2024
Set to suit up in Week 15
Johnson (foot) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's game versus the Commanders, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson kicked off Week 15 prep with back-to-back limited practices due to a lingering foot injury, but a full session Friday has him in the clear to play this weekend. In the wake of Taysom Hill's season-ending ACL tear, Johnson and Foster Moreau split the TE reps this past Sunday at the Giants, with both players handling 49 of 68 offensive snaps. Johnson was more productive as a receiver, though, hauling in four of five targets for 50 yards and one touchdown while the latter caught both of his targets for 40 yards.
Dec 12, 2024
Another limited showing
Johnson (foot) was limited at Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
For a second week in a row, the Saints are placing a cap on Johnson's reps due to a foot issue. Despite being limited all of last week, though, he entered the weekend without a designation for this past Sunday's game at the Giants, when both he and Foster Moreau played 49 of 68 offensive snaps. Johnson was the more productive of the duo in the team's first contest without Taysom Hill (torn ACL): Johnson had a 4-50-1 line on five targets, while Moreau went for 2-40-0 on two targets. Friday's practice report will unveail whether or not Johnson has a designation ahead of Sunday's contest versus the Commanders.
Dec 11, 2024
Still dealing with foot issue
Johnson practiced in a limited fashion Wednesday due to a foot injury, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Taysom Hill out for the season due to a torn ACL, Johnson and Foster Moreau handled the TE reps this past Sunday at the Giants, with both players playing 49 of 68 offensive snaps. Both got in the act as pass catchers, with Johnson hauling in four of five targets for 50 yards and one touchdown, and Moreau reeling in both targets for 40 yards. Johnson also tended to a foot injury last week, so there's a decent chance he's cleared for this coming Sunday's contest against the Commanders by week's end even if he's limited through Friday.
Dec 8, 2024
Hauls in TD in win
Johnson caught four of five targets for 50 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 14-11 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The tight end was on the other end of Derek Carr's only TD pass of the day, hauling in an 11-yard strike late in the third quarter. It was Johnson's third touchdown of the season and second in the last three games, and the 50 yards were a season high for him. Carr left the game late in the fourth quarter to be checked out for a concussion and a hand injury, and if he is forced to sit out a Week 15 clash with the Commanders, Johnson could be leaned on more heavily as a security blanket by Jake Haener or Spencer Rattler.
Dec 6, 2024
All clear for Week 14
Johnson (foot) was limited in Friday's practice but does not carry an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Giants, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson and Foster Moreau (shoulder) will both be available for Sunday's road matchup against New York, though both have had a cap on their practice reps leading up to Week 14 action. With Taysom Hill (knee) out for the season due to an ACL tear, Johnson and Moreau appear in line to split starting tight end reps for the Saints, a role that figures to provide both members of the duo with increased fantasy upside.
Dec 5, 2024
Another limited session
Johnson (foot) was limited in practice Thursday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Johnson and Foster Moreau (shoulder) have had a cap on their practice reps so far this week, so Friday's injury report will be key for determining who among the duo may be cleared ahead of the weekend. Johnson and Moreau are the top candidates to split TE reps for the Saints the rest of the season after Taysom Hill tore his ACL this past Sunday against the Rams.
Dec 4, 2024
Dealing with foot issue
Johnson practiced in a limited fashion Wednesday due to a foot injury, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In the wake of Taysom Hill's season-ending ACL tear, Johnson and Foster Moreau (shoulder) are expected to handle the bulk of the TE reps for the Saints moving forward. Having said that, both players began Week 14 prep with a cap on their practice reps. The pair will have two more opportunities Thursday and Friday before the team potentially tags them with designations ahead of Sunday's game at the Giants.
Dec 1, 2024
Grabs five receptions Sunday
Johnson caught five of seven targets for 36 yards in Sunday's 21-14 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Johnson actually finished just one yard shy of Saints' leading receiver Taysom Hill (knee) in a contest that did not feature a ton of big passing plays. The backup tight end could be in store for extra work if the knee injury that Hill suffered late in Sunday's loss costs the starter time, but Foster Moreau remains in the mix as well. Either way, Johnson's ceiling is capped in games in which he doesn't hit pay dirt this season, keeping him out of the conversation in standard leagues ahead of next Sunday's tilt against the Giants.
Nov 17, 2024
Finds end zone Sunday
Johnson caught all three of his targets for 30 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 35-14 win over the Browns.
ANALYSIS
The tight end was on the other end of a one-yard TD toss form Derek Carr in the fourth quarter. It's Johnson's second score of the season, but his first since the Saints' season opener, and he has yet to reach 50 receiving yards in a game this season. Johnson will remain a TD-dependent fantasy option on the other side of New Orleans' Week 12 bye.
Nov 10, 2024
Tallies two catches Week 10
Johnson hauled in two of three targets for 22 yards during Sunday's 20-17 victory versus the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Johnson logged three or fewer catches for the fifth week in a row. It seemed like the 6-foot-4 tight end could've had a bigger target share with wideouts Chris Olave (concussion), Rashid Shaheed (knee) and Bub Means (ankle) now all on IR. Instead, running back Alvin Kamara led the team with six targets while newly-acquired wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling exploded for a team-high 109 receiving yards. Johnson has now recorded 22 catches for 247 yards and one touchdown through 10 games, which is a far cry from his stat line over 13 games last season when he logged 37-368-4 across 13 appearances. He'll hope to see more targets during next week's home game versus the Browns on Sunday, Nov. 17.
Nov 3, 2024
Clears 40 receiving yards Sunday
Johnson brought in both targets for 41 yards in the Saints' 23-22 loss to the Panthers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's receiving yardage total was enough to tie him for second on the afternoon with Taysom Hill. Johnson saw a four-game streak of at least three receptions snapped with Sunday's stat line, but on the bright side, he's now cleared 40 receiving yards in three of the past four games. However, the fifth-year pro heads into a Week 10 home matchup against the Falcons still seeking his first touchdown since Week 1.
Oct 31, 2024
Full practice Thursday
Johnson (shoulder) practiced in full Thursday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Stretching back to last week, Johnson was listed as limited on four consecutive practice reports due to a shoulder before Thursday's uncapped session. With his health cleared up ahead of the weekend, he'll continue on as the Saints' top TE, which could be a boon for him with Derek Carr (oblique) expected to return to action Sunday at Carolina.
Oct 30, 2024
Remains limited by shoulder issue
Johnson was limited at Wednesday's practice due to a shoulder injury, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
For a second week in a row, Johnson is tending to a shoulder concern, but on a positive note the Saints didn't include any mention of the head injury that he was evaluated for this past Sunday at the Chargers. He'll thus aim to return to full participation Thursday and/or Friday and sidestep a designation ahead of Sunday's game at Carolina.
Oct 28, 2024
Cleared after being evaluated
Saints head coach Dennis Allen said Monday that Johnson (head) is fully cleared after having been evaluated for a concussion during Sunday's loss to the Chargers, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was evaluated late during New Orleans' loss to Los Angeles in Week 8, but he's good to go for Sunday's road matchup against Carolina. Prior to being forced out versus the Chargers, Johnson had secured three of four targets for 48 yards. With quarterback Derek Carr (oblique) trending in the right direction to return Week 9, Johnson and the Saints' passing game as a whole could be positioned to benefit from a notable boost.
Oct 27, 2024
Evaluated for head injury
Johnson was evaluated for a head injury late in Sunday's 26-8 loss to the Chargers, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The results of Johnson's evaluation weren't immediately available. If a concussion is revealed, Johnson would need to clear the NFL's five-step concussion protocol in order to play in Week 9 against the Panthers. He had three catches for 48 yards on four targets in Sunday's loss.
Oct 25, 2024
Good to go for Sunday
Johnson (shoulder) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Due to the shoulder injury, Johnson was a limited participant in practice throughout the week, but the Saints saw enough from him to give him the green light for Sunday. After a slow start to the season, Johnson has picked up the pace with 11 catches for 97 yards on 14 targets across the last three games, though he's benefited from the Saints missing several key playmakers during that stretch. In Week 8, the Saints will get Chris Olave (concussion) and Taysom Hill (rib) back from one- and three-game absences, respectively, so Johnson's target share could take at least a slight hit Sunday compared to recent weeks.
Oct 24, 2024
Another limited practice
Johnson (shoulder) was limited in practice Thursday, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is operating with a cap on his practice reps this week, while Taysom Hill (rib) followed up a limited session Wednesday with full participation one day later. As such, Johnson has one more chance this week to get back to all activity or thus risk entering the weekend with a designation for Sunday's game at the Chargers.
Oct 23, 2024
Limited by shoulder issue
Johnson practiced on a limited basis Wednesday due to a shoulder injury.
ANALYSIS
Johnson previously dealt with a forearm issue during Week 5 prep, but he's been able to suit up in all seven games this season and earn at least a 50 percent snap share in five consecutive contests. He hasn't produced much during those five weeks, accruing a 13-110-0 line in 17 targets, even with Taysom Hill (rib) sidelined for four of them. Both Johnson and Hill had caps on their practice reps Wednesday, so the statuses of both will need to be monitored as the week goes on.
Oct 18, 2024
Modest numbers despite absences
Johnson secured three of six targets for 18 yards in the Saints' 33-10 loss to the Broncos on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
The veteran tight end couldn't take advantage of the absences of Chris Olave (concussion), Rashid Shaheed (knee) and Taysom Hill (ribs), although he did log a season-high target total. However, Johnson couldn't come close to the season-best 48 receiving yards he'd posted four days earlier against the Buccaneers, and his outlook figures to remain modest going into a Week 8 road matchup against the Chargers on Sunday, Oct. 27, a game which Olave and Hill are likely to be back for.
Oct 13, 2024
Logs three catches versus Tampa Bay
Johnson caught all three targets for 48 yards during Sunday's 51-27 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson logged a season-high in receiving yards, including a season-long 27-yard reception in the first quarter. He also had two other targets wiped off the board by penalties in the third and fourth quarters. The Saints seemed to feature their tight ends more with rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler starting in place of an injured Derek Carr (oblique), as Foster Moreau also logged two receptions on two targets for 54 yards. Johnson's recent resurgence in the offense is encouraging for any fantasy owners who took a flier on him early in the season. However, he's still probably just a solid waiver-wire pickup rather than a dependable piece in week-to-week lineups. Johnson will look to log at least three targets for the fourth game in a row during the Saints' upcoming game versus Denver on Thursday Night Football.
Oct 8, 2024
Catches five passes Week 5
Johnson reeled in all five targets for 31 yards during Monday's 26-13 defeat against Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
The Saints' tight end got more involved Week 5, and Johnson benefitted with season-highs across the board. He also played over 70 percent of offensive snaps for the first time this year. But, the 6-foot-4 pass-catcher still didn't catch a touchdown for the fourth week in a row. Insetad, fellow tight end Foster Moreau hauled in a six-yard touchdown pass on his second and final target of the game in the fourth quarter. The Saints' passing game was still focused around Rashid Shaheed and Alvin Kamara, as these two logged nine and eight targets, respectively. It will be interesting to see how/if the team's offensive gameplan changes with quarterback Derek Carr expected to miss multiple weeks with an oblique injury sustained late in Monday's loss. In the meantime, either Jake Haener or rookie Spencer Rattler should step in under versus the Falcons on Sunday, Oct. 13.
Oct 4, 2024
Back to full participation
Johnson (forearm) was a full participant in practice Friday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson began Week 5 prep with a limited session Thursday, but his upgrade to full participation Friday puts him on track to avoid the injury report for Monday's game against the Chiefs. Foster Moreau has been receiving the majority of playing time at tight end for the Saints, so Johnson will be tough to rely on Monday, despite Kansas City's struggles defending the position.
Oct 3, 2024
Opens week limited
Johnson (forearm) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice session.
ANALYSIS
Johnson may have picked up the injury during the Saints' 26-24 loss to the Falcons on Sunday. He'll have two more opportunities to increase his practice participation ahead of Monday's game against the Chiefs. Johnson has caught four passes (on six targets) for 39 yards and one touchdown through four regular-season games.
Sep 30, 2024
Breaks catchless streak
Johnson caught two of three targets for 13 yards during Sunday's 26-24 loss to the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Johnson logged his first targets since the season opener versus Carolina. The 6-foot-4 tight end also would have finished with one more target and catch, as he had a 28-yard catch wiped off the board by an offensive holding penalty early third quarter. The 6-foot-4 tight end looked like a total non-factor and was overshadowed for playing time by Foster Moreau over the last two weeks. But, Johnson played a season-high 67 percent of offensive snaps compared to 57 percent for Moreau in Week 4. Neither Johnson nor Moreau has had a consistent role in the receiving game so far this season, combining for 12 total targets over four games. There's not much reason to expect that their roles will increase during their next game versus Kansas City on Monday, Oct. 7.
Sep 23, 2024
Zero targets again Week 3
Johnson tallied zero targets during Sunday's 15-12 defeat against Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was a total non-factor in the passing game for the second week in a row. After catching an impressive toe-tap 16-yard touchdown Week 1, the fifth-year tight end has completely fallen out of receiving rotation. What's worse, he appears to have been supplanted by Foster Moreau for the TE1 role, as the latter logged 40 offensive snaps Sunday compared to 28 for Johnson. The 6-foot-4 Johnson totaled 37 catches (on 59 targets) over 13 regular-season games with starting quarterback Derek Carr. However, it appears the tight end position won't have nearly the same importance in the passing game under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. Johnson will look to work his way back into a more consistent role during this coming Sunday's road game against the division-rival Falcons.
Sep 15, 2024
Zero targets in blowout win
Johnson had zero targets during Sunday's 44-19 win versus the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was not listed as New Orleans' starting tight end for the second game in a row. Instead, Foster Moreau got the start once again despite coming back from a concussion sustained in last week's win over Carolina. Neither tight end logged any targets Sunday, as quarterback Derek Carr attempted just 16 passes while throwing for 243 yards and two touchdowns to one interception. Meanwhile, Taysom Hill logged one target and three carries before exiting with a chest issue that required further evaluation at a hospital postgame. Through two games, Johnson and Moreau have now logged three and four targets, respectively. While it's too soon to make any definitive projections, it appears that tight end may not be a position that's highlighted in the offense of new coordinator Klint Kubiak. It will be worth monitoring if either Johnson or Moreau see more targets during next Sunday's home game against the Eagles.
Sep 9, 2024
Makes toe-tap TD grab Sunday
Johnson gathered two of three targets for 26 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 47-10 victory versus the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson had one of the standout plays of the game with a 16-yard touchdown reception, catching a perfect pass from quarterback Derek Carr before making a toe-tapping grab in the right corner of the end zone. The 6-foot-4 pass catcher actually wound up with fewer targets and receptions than fellow tight end Foster Moreau, who caught all four of his targets for 43 yards and a touchdown before exiting with a head injury. Johnson totaled 34 more targets despite playing two fewer games than Moreau last season, and the former was assumed to be the TE1 heading into the season opener. The latter's status is also now up in the air for next Sunday's road game versus Dallas. Yet, when Moreau is healthy, it will be worth monitoring how he and Johnson are deployed -- along with Taysom Hill -- under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
Aug 25, 2024
Returns to in-game action
Johnson failed to haul in his lone target during Sunday's 30-27 preseason finale loss to the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Johnson did not see extensive playing time Sunday, as he was one of the surefire starters that suited up for the Saints. His return to the playing field was ultimately the most important thing for Johnson after being sidelined for the first two preseason exhibitions while recovering from offseason surgery. Johnson caught 37 of 59 targets for 368 yards across 13 regular-season appearances last year. He'll look to hit the ground running Week 1 against the Panthers.
Aug 25, 2024
Playing in preseason finale
Johnson will play in the Saints' preseason contest against Tennessee on Sunday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson began training camp on the PUP list while continuing to recover from the foot surgery he underwent in June. The tight end was able to return to team drills Thursday and will be able to get in some game reps during New Orleans' final preseason contest Sunday. Johnson likely won't log extensive playing time in the exhibition matchup, but the snaps should help him prepare for the regular season, as he's slated to be the team's No. 1 tight end under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
Aug 22, 2024
Returns to team drills
Johnson (foot) participated in team drills during Thursday's practice session, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was activated from the active/PUP list Tuesday, and he returned to team drills Thursday for the first time since his mid-June foot surgery. It's unclear whether he'll be available for Sunday's preseason finale against Tennessee, but it seems as though he's trending toward suiting up for the Saints' regular-season opener against the Panthers on Sept. 8.
Aug 20, 2024
Brought off PUP list
The Saints activated Johnson (foot) from the active/PUP list Tuesday, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayunereports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has passed his physical and is expected to practice in some capacity Tuesday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports. The veteran tight end has missed all of training camp to this point while recovering from mid-June foot surgery. Johnson likely isn't a candidate to get healthy in time for Sunday's preseason finale against the Titans, but he now has just under three weeks left to resume practicing in full ahead of New Orleans' regular-season opener against the Panthers on Sept 8.
Jul 31, 2024
Spotted running
Johnson (foot) ran on a side field Wednesday, Jeff Nowak of WWLAMN reports.
ANALYSIS
This is the latest sign of progress, with Johnson apparently upping the intensity of his workouts after reporters spotted him jogging Wednesday. It's unclear if he'll be ready by Week 1, but the quick return to physical activity after mid-June surgery at least suggests his foot injury was relatively minor and not something more serious like a Jones fracture.
Jul 29, 2024
Shows progress with side work
Johnson (knee) jogged and worked off to the side during Monday's practice, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was first spotted at training camp Friday, and while he hasn't progressed to sprinting or anything along those lines, his presence on the field less than a month and a half after foot surgery suggests the rehab process is going well. He seemingly suffered the injury during June minicamp, with reports at the time calling the tight end uncertain for Week 1. That's probably still accurate, as he remains on the physically unable to perform list with six weeks to go until the Saints' season opener against Carolina (Sept. 8).
Jul 18, 2024
Lands on PUP list ahead of camp
The Saints placed Johnson (foot) on the active/PUP list Thursday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson remains sidelined while recovering from foot surgery relating to an issue he seemingly suffered during June minicamp. Terrell reports that updates on Johnson's recovery have been positive, but that he's expected to begin camp by working off to the side. Once cleared to practice Johnson will be eligible to come off the PUP list at any point during camp or the preseason, but it remains to be seen whether he'll be ready for Week 1. Foster Moreau and Taysom Hill figure to handle more first-team reps while Johnson is away from the practice field, while Jesper Horsted, Tommy Hudson, Michael Jacobson and Dallin Holker could also benefit from increased opportunities.
Jun 13, 2024
Needs foot surgery
Johnson will have foot surgery next week and be out for a while, but he has a chance to be ready for the start of the season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson seemingly suffered the injury during June minicamp and now figures to miss most or all of training camp and the preseason. His upcoming absence will leave more first-team reps for Foster Moreau and Taysom Hill, neither of whom is a clean fit for Johnson's role as the passing-down tight end. Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports that the Saints are working out TE Sal Cannella, who starred in the UFL this spring and led the league's tight ends in yards (496) and touchdowns (six).
Jun 13, 2024
Injures lower leg
Johnson recently suffered a lower leg injury and is expected to miss "a good amount of time," Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Details on the injury haven't been reported, with Underhill only noting that he hasn't heard that the injury will impact Johnson's availability for the start of the regular season. It sounds like Johnson may not be ready for the start of training camp, in which case Foster Moreau and Taysom Hill likely would get more snaps with the first-team offense. A calf injury cost Johnson four games last season, and he generally had a quiet year until exploding over the final four weeks for 216 yards and three touchdowns on 24 targets. Prior to that, he had 152 yards and one TD in nine games.
Jan 7, 2024
Catches three passes in finale
Johnson gathered in all three targets for 40 yards during Sunday's 48-17 win versus the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Johnson led the Saints' tight ends in receiving yards for the third week in a row, and he finished with 15 catches (on 22 targets) for 178 yards and two touchdowns over that span. This marks an encourgaing ending to what was a rather up-and-down campaign for the 27-year-old tight end. Across 13 games this season, Johnson tallied 37 receptions (on 59 targets) for 368 yards and four touchdowns, marking a slight downtick from his career-best 2022 season.
Jan 7, 2024
Suiting up Sunday
Johnson (chest) is active for Sunday's game versus the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Johnson spent some time on the sideline last Sunday in Tampa Bay due to a shoulder injury but was able to finish the contest. As the Saints kicked off Week 18 prep, he was listed as a non-participant due to a chest issue Wednesday, but he capped it with back-to-back limited sessions before entering the weekend as questionable. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Sunday morning that Johnson was slated to suit up, which has been confirmed upon the team posting its list of inactives. Johnson will look to keep up his recent hot streak against an Atlanta defense that has given up the sixth-most catches (90) to opposing tight ends in 16 games this season.
Jan 7, 2024
On track to play
Johnson (chest), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Falcons, is expected to play, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson carries an injury designation into the regular-season finale after he sat out practice Wednesday before closing Week 18 prep with a pair of limited sessions. Though he sustained the chest injury in last week's 23-13 win over the Buccaneers, Johnson was able to return to the contest and finished with his best stat line of the season, as he hauled in eight of 12 targets for 90 yards and a touchdown. Assuming he's officially cleared ahead of Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff, Johnson could remain a prominent part of the passing attack with receiver Michael Thomas (knee) stuck on injured reserve and with wideout A.T. Perry (illness) and running back Alvin Kamara (ankle) both listed as questionable but uncertain to play.
Jan 5, 2024
Listed as questionable
Johnson (chest) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Atlanta, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson returned to the Week 17 win over Tampa Bay after injuring his chest in the first half, ultimately finishing with season highs for yards (90), targets (12) and catches (eight) while scoring a TD for the third straight games. The Saints listed him as a non-participant Wednesday and then a limited practice participant Thursday and Friday, with Johnson seemingly on the right track to play ahead of Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff. Taysom Hill and Foster Moreau will take on more snaps at tight end if Johnson unexpectedly can't go.
Jan 4, 2024
Manages limited practice Thursday
Johnson (chest) practiced on a limited basis Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson followed up Wednesday's absence from practice with some activity one day later, signifying progress through his current chest issue. He has one more session Friday to prove his health before the Saints potentially tag him with a designation ahead of Sunday's game against the Falcons. If do-it-all running back Alvin Kamara (ankle) sits out this weekend, an active Johnson could benefit from the trickle-down effect of the former's 6.6 targets per game being freed up.
Jan 3, 2024
Tending to chest issue
Johnson was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice due to a chest injury.
ANALYSIS
Johnson sat out Weeks 4-7 due to a calf issue and has dealt with quad and shoulder concerns for about the last month. Despite the recent injuries, he's suited up in all six games since the Saints' Week 11 bye, recording a 20-231-3 line on 34 targets during that span. It's unclear if the current injury is threatening his availability for Sunday's contest against the Falcons, but his activity level, or lack thereof, in the coming days could be telling for his Week 18 status.
Jan 1, 2024
Season-best performance in win
Johnson brought in eight of 12 targets for 90 yards and a touchdown in the Saints' 23-13 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was the surprise leader in receptions, receiving yards and targets for the Saints, posting season bests across all three categories. The fourth-year pro has now scored in three straight contests as well, and he could play a key role again in a Week 18 divisional clash against a Falcons team that's given up plenty of production to tight ends all season.
Dec 31, 2023
Back in Sunday's game
Johnson (shoulder) has returned to Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson had been forced out of the contest with a shoulder issue, but the tight end will resume action and look to build off the 3/19/1 receiving line he had logged prior to his exit.
Dec 31, 2023
Hurts shoulder Sunday
Johnson was forced out of Sunday's game against the Buccaneers with a shoulder injury, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his departure from the contest, Johnson caught all three of his targets for 19 yards and a TD. In his absence, Taysom Hill, Foster Moreau and Jimmy Graham are available to handle the Saints' tight end reps.
Dec 22, 2023
Scores third TD in loss
Johnson secured four of seven targets for 48 yards and a touchdown in the Saints' 30-22 loss to the Rams on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
The talented tight end was third in receptions, receiving yards and targets for the Saints, and the latter two figures set and tied a season high, respectively. Johnson's catch total was his highest since Week 12 as well, and he scored for the second time in four days on a five-yard touchdown grab just past the midway point of the fourth quarter. Johnson next takes aim at a Buccaneers defense that's been vulnerable to tight ends all season when the Saints square off with their division rival in a Week 17 road matchup on New Year's Eve.
Dec 17, 2023
Finds end zone Week 15
Johnson gathered in both of his targets for 38 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 24-6 victory versus the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Johnson caught a wide open 23-yard touchdown pass up the seam to cap off the Saints' opening drive of the second half. This was the 6-foot-4 tight end's second touchdown of the year, and he also recorded his second-most receiving yards of any game this season Sunday. The 27-year-old continued to operate in a balanced rotation at tight end, tying with 37-year-old Jimmy Graham in both targets and receptions while Foster Moreau paced this unit with three catches on five targets. This group has taken on a bigger role in the offense as of late while wideout Michael Thomas (knee) has been on IR, and this was somewhat exacerbated with Chris Olave (ankle) inactive Sunday. But, across 10 games this season, Johnson has now recorded just 22 catches (on 37 targets) for 190 yards and two touchdowns. His overall production will likely remain limited so long as the Saints continue to roll out multiple pass-catching tight ends moving forward.
Dec 11, 2023
Plays fewer snaps Week 14
Johnson gathered in both of his targets for 10 yards during Sunday's 28-6 victory against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson caught two passes in the first half after logging three limited practices during Week 14 prep. The 27-year-old wound up playing a season-low 40 percent of New Orleans' offensive snaps, though it's unclear if this was due to his lingering quad issue or if he was just overtaken by Foster Moreau, as the latter played 63 percent of offensive snaps and was listed as the team's starting tight end Sunday. These two along with veteran tight end Jimmy Graham combined for just six catches on as many targets despite the absence of Taysom Hill (foot), and Graham logged the unit's lone receiving touchdown. Across nine appearances this season, Johnson has now recorded 20 receptions (on 34 targets) for 152 yards and one touchdown. His lackluster production this season, and especially over the last few weeks, leaves little confidence for his value heading into Week 15 versus the Giants.
Dec 10, 2023
Available Sunday
Johnson (quadriceps) is listed as active Sunday against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
A quadriceps injury capped Johnson to limited sessions during the entirety of Week 14 prep, but it won't stop him from being available to the Saints offense Sunday. With WR Rashid Shaheed (thigh) and TE Taysom Hill (foot/hand) inactive, Johnson could play a bigger role than usual behind the team's top pass catcher Chris Olave (illness). On the season, Johnson boasts a modest 18-142-1 line on 32 targets in eight appearances.
Dec 10, 2023
Appears in line to play Sunday
Johnson (quad) is expected to play in Sunday's Week 14 game against Carolina, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was limited to a trio of limited practices this week due to a quad issue, but it looks like he'll be able to take the field Sunday. That should help soften the blow of the likely absence of Taysom Hill, who is expected to sit out due to a foot injury. Johnson hasn't been much of a contributor when healthy this season, surpassing 40 receiving yards just once over his eight games.
Dec 8, 2023
Deemed questionable
Johnson (quadriceps) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Carolina, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was a limited practice participant Wednesday through Friday, suggesting he's relatively healthy compared to the Saints' other main pass catchers. In addition to Michael Thomas (knee) still being on injured reserve, the team has WR Chris Olave (illness), WR Rashid Shaheed (thigh) and TE Taysom Hill (foot/hand) all listed as questionable after closing out the week with either two or three consecutive missed practices. Of the bunch, Johnson and Olave seemingly have the best odds to play, though it could come down to a game-time decision in both cases ahead of the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff Sunday.
Dec 7, 2023
Stays limited in practice
Johnson (quadricep) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Johnson matched his level of practice participation from Wednesday, so he may need to upgrade to full activity Friday to avoid carrying an injury designation into Sunday's game versus the Panthers. If Johnson isn't able to play through the injury this weekend, the Saints would likely turn to a committee of Taysom Hill, Foster Moreau and Jimmy Graham to fill snaps at tight end.
Dec 6, 2023
Tending to quad injury
Johnson practiced in a limited fashion Wednesday due to a quadriceps injury, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson previously sat out Weeks 4 through 7 due to a calf issue, but it's unclear if the current health concern may impact his availability for Sunday's game against the Panthers. His snap share, when available, has been fairly consistent, ranging from 57 to 81 percent, but he's managed only an 18-142-1 line on 32 targets in his eight appearances this season.
Dec 3, 2023
Commits crucial drop early in loss
Johnson failed to haul in any of his three targets during Sunday's 33-28 defeat against Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Johnson failed to log a reception for the first time this season. The 27-year-old also made a pivotal mistake on the Saints' first offensive play of the game when he failed to secure a short pass while running across the middle of the field. This resulted in the ball popping up in the air and allowed Lions safety Brian Branch to make a diving interception. The Saints went on to fall behind 21-0 late in the first quarter, and Johnson did not record a target after early in the second quarter. Johnson still logged more targets than fellow tight ends Foster Moreau (two) and Jimmy Graham (one), though these two combined for three receptions and a touchdown. Johnson's performance is especially disappointing considering that the Saints were without two of their top three wideouts with Rashid Shaheed (thigh) inactive and Michael Thomas (knee) on IR. Across eight games this season, the 6-foot-4 tight end has recorded 18 receptions (on 29 targets) for 142 yards on just one touchdown. He'll look to play an all-around be

Tallies seven targets in loss
Johnson caught four of seven targets for 45 yards during Sunday's 24-15 defeat to the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Johnson logged the Saints' second-most targets behind No. 1 wideout Chris Olave (nine), even though the latter was forced out during the third quarter with a concussion and did not return for the remainder of the game. Wideout Rashid Shaheed also sustained a thigh injury that forced him to exit during the second quarter. With Michael Thomas (injured reserve), it appears that the 6-foot-3 tight end was the next-best option in New Orleans' receiving depth chart. Johnson also recorded season highs in both targets in receiving yards, though he still finished with fewer receiving yards than Olave (114), versatile tight end Taysom Hill (55) and running back Alvin Kamara (50). Should Olave and Shaheed miss time as a result of their injuries, then Johnson's production could benefit moving forward.

Scores first TD of 2023
Johnson caught all five of his targets for 29 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 24-17 win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Johnson caught a three-yard touchdown pass thrown by Taysom Hill. The touchdown was Johnson's first of the season and gave the Saints a 24-17 lead with 11:05 to play. Neither team scored again, so it held up as the game-winning score. Johnson hasn't reached 40 receiving yards in any of his five appearances this season, but he scored seven touchdowns in 2022 and will look to get back into the end zone in Week 10 against the Vikings.
Oct 30, 2023
Eases back into action Week 8
Johnson caught one of two targets for five yards during Sunday's 38-27 win versus the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played a season-low 61 percent of New Orleans' offense snaps in his first game back after missing four straight with a calf injury. The 27-year-old was not fully cleared until Friday's injury report, so it's likely that the team did not want to use him quite as the first three games of the season when he played at least 70 percent of offense snaps in each contest. Johnson also saw slightly less playing time than fellow tight end Foster Moreau, who did not see a target Sunday. Johnson will look to record more than three catches for the first time this season when New Orleans takes on Chicago in Week 9.
Oct 27, 2023
Cleared for Sunday
Johnson (calf) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game at Indianapolis.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is cleared to return from a four-game absence after upgrading to full practice participation Friday. He'll likely return his role as the Saints' top pass-caching TE -- a job largely filled by Taysom Hill (chest) in recent weeks.
Oct 26, 2023
Stays limited at practice
Johnson (calf) practiced on a limited basis Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has missed the last four games due to a lingering calf injury, but he now has strung together back-to-back capped sessions to begin Week 8 prep. There's an expectation from coach Dennis Allen that Johnson will return Sunday at Indianapolis, per Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com. That said, Johnson may have to log a full practice Friday in order to avoid a designation for that contest. Fellow TE options Taysom Hill (chest) and Jimmy Graham (illness) also were limited Thursday, leaving the position in some flux for the Saints.
Oct 25, 2023
Limited in return to practice
Johnson (calf) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Dennis Allen said Monday that he hoped to have Johnson back in the lineup this Sunday against the Colts. The tight end has now taken a tangible step forward after missing four games and three weeks of practice, though his availability may remain in doubt if he can't progress to full participation by the end of the week. Taysom Hill (chest) took on the largest pass-catching role of his career the past two games but likely will fall back toward a couple targets per week once Johnson returns.
Oct 23, 2023
Expected back Week 8
Saints head coach Dennis Allen said he hopes to have Johnson (calf) back in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Colts, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has missed the Saints' last four games after suffering the calf injury during pregame warmups ahead of the team's Week 4 loss to the Buccaneers. While he's been sidelined, the Saints have rotated Foster Moreau, Taysom Hill and Jimmy Graham at tight end, but Johnson will most likely settle in atop the depth chart once healthy. Considering Johnson hasn't practiced in any capacity since suffering the injury, the Saints may want to see him turn in a full session or two before clearing him to play at Indianapolis.
Oct 18, 2023
Out again
Johnson (calf) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
Johnson will miss a fourth straight game and still hasn't practiced since injuring his calf during pregame warmups ahead of a Week 4 loss to Tampa Bay. His absence has freed up more snaps and routes for each of Taysom Hill, Foster Moreau and Jimmy Graham, with Hill notably garnering a career-high eight targets in a loss to the Texans this past Sunday.
Oct 17, 2023
Idle for another practice
Johnson (calf) isn't taking part in Tuesday's walk-through practice, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson hasn't practiced in any capacity since injuring his calf in pregame warmups ahead of the Saints' Week 4 loss to the Buccaneers. With the Saints facing a quick turnaround for Week 7 with a Thursday night game against the Jaguars, Johnson appears headed for a fourth consecutive missed game. Look for Foster Moreau and Taysom Hill to take on most of the snaps at tight end Thursday.
Oct 16, 2023
Remains sidelined Monday
Johnson (calf) was listed as DNP on Monday's estimated practice report, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson hasn't played since Week 3. In his Week 6 absence against the Texans, Taysom Hill, Foster Moreau and Jimmy Graham handled tight end duties for New Orleans. Hill turned eight targets into a 7-49-0 line, and Moreau caught all four of his looks for 33 yards. Graham wasn't targeted in the loss.
Oct 13, 2023
Out again
Johnson (calf) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Houston, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
With Johnson missing a third straight game, the Saints figure to again deploy a TE rotation comprised of Foster Moreau, Jimmy Graham and Taysom Hill. Each of the three ran a route on less than half of Derek Carr's dropbacks in a blowout win over the Patriots last week.
Oct 12, 2023
Still absent from practice
Johnson (calf) won't participate in Thursday's practice, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson hasn't been able to practice in any capacity since suffering a calf injury in pregame warmups ahead of the Saints' 26-9 loss to the Buccaneers in Week 4. Unless he's able to mix into drills at the Saints' final Week 6 practice Friday, Johnson will most likely miss a third consecutive game this Sunday at Houston. Foster Moreau served as the primary replacement for Johnson in the Saints' Week 5 win over the Patriots, starting at tight end and playing 48 of 72 (67 percent) of the snaps on offense and finishing with a six-yard touchdown reception on his lone target.
Oct 11, 2023
No return to practice
Johnson (calf) didn't practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson hasn't played since Week 3 and appears in danger of missing a third straight game when the Saints face the Texans this Sunday. His absence has led to all of Foster Moreau, Jimmy Graham and Taysom Hill getting extra routes, though it's been a timeshare that doesn't look especially fantasy-friendly.
Oct 6, 2023
Won't play in New England
Johnson (calf) has been ruled out for Sunday's game in New England, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson suffered a calf injury in Week 4 pregame warmups and was unable to practice at all during the week prior to being ruled out for Week 5. Foster Moreau and Jimmy Graham should continue to hold down the fort at tight end Sunday while Johnson sets his sights on trying to return in Week 5 against the Texans.
Oct 5, 2023
Misses another practice
Johnson (calf) won't participate in Thursday's practice, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
After injuring his calf in pregame warmups and not appearing in Sunday's loss to the Buccaneers, Johnson has yet to mix into drills during the Saints' first two Week 5 practices. Unless Johnson bucks the trend and is able to return to the field Friday as a limited or full practice participant, he'll likely wind up missing a second straight game this Sunday at New England. Foster Moreau and Jimmy Graham would both be in store for expanded roles at tight end if Johnson is sidelined this weekend.
Oct 4, 2023
No activity Wednesday
Johnson (calf) was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
The Saints announced that Johnson was questionable to return not long after this past Sunday's kickoff against the Buccaneers and later ruled him out entirely after halftime. In the end, he didn't log an offensive snap, and now the calf injury is keeping him out of drills to begin Week 5 prep. With Foster Moreau (ankle) logging a full session Wednesday, the team has two healthy options at tight end (also, Jimmy Graham) in the event Johnson has to miss some time.
Oct 1, 2023
Ruled out Sunday
Johnson (calf) won't return to Sunday's game versus the Buccaneers, John DeShazier of the Saints' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Not long after Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, the Saints relayed that Johnson was questionable to return due to a calf injury. Upon additional testing, he won't be available to the offense for the rest of Week 4. With Foster Moreau (ankle) inactive, Jimmy Graham is New Orleans' only healthy and available tight end Sunday. Johnson's next chance for game action will arrive Sunday, Oct. 8 at New England.
Oct 1, 2023
Dealing with calf injury
Johnson is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Buccaneers due to a calf injury, John DeShazier of the Saints' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The Saints made the announcement not long after kickoff, so it's unclear if Johnson actually saw the field. If Johnson is unable to return, the team will be down to just one healthy tight end (Jimmy Graham) on the game-day roster with Foster Moreau (ankle) inactive.
Sep 24, 2023
Held in check by Green Bay
Johnson hauled in two of four targets for 12 yards during Sunday's 18-17 defeat to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson logged five or fewer targets for the third game in a row despite the absence of Foster Moreau (ankle). While the starting tight end only finished with fewer targets than wideouts Chris Olave (11) and Michael Thomas (nine), he still tied with backup running back Tony Jones in terms of targets. He also lost out on the Saints' only red-zone scoring opportunity, as backup tight end Jimmy Graham instead caught an eight-yard touchdown pass on his lone target of the game in the first quarter. Johnson did log three targets after backup quarterback Jameis Winston stepped in for starter Derek Carr, who was forced out in the third quarter and did not return after suffering what's believed to be a right AC sprain, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Johnson's role and usage as TE1 don't figure to fluctuate much if Carr ends up missing time moving forward with this injury.
Sep 19, 2023
Logs two catches Week 2
Johnson hauled in two of three targets for 13 yards during Monday's 20-17 win against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's first target didn't come until the Saints' final two-minute drive in the second quarter, and he recorded both of his catches in a span of eight plays midway through the third quarter. His moderate target share from quarterback Derek Carr is rather disappointing for the 6-foot-4 tight end, who was regarded as an up-and-coming fantasy product after he accumulated a career-high receiving stat line across 16 games in 2022 (42-508-7). However, Johnson still played starting reps Monday night, lining up on 81 percent of New Orleans' offense snaps compared to 47 percent for Foster Moreau and 13 percent for Jimmy Graham. Johnson will look to carve out a more favorable target share versus the Packers on Sunday.
Sep 15, 2023
Returns to full participation
Johnson (calf) was a full practice participant Friday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is set to play Monday night against Carolina, after catching three of five targets for 36 yards in a 16-15 win over the Titans last week. He finished the game with 75 percent snap share and 81 percent route share, unimpacted by the presence of offseason additions Foster Moreau and Jimmy Graham (12 combined routes, no targets).
Sep 14, 2023
Dealing with calf issue
Johnson was limited at Thursday's practice due to a calf injury, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Following the Saints' first official practice of Week 2, a new and potentially big injury has emerged. Johnson will have two more chances this week to put himself in a position to play Monday at Carolina. If Johnson ends up limited or out for that contest, Foster Moreau and Jimmy Graham are around to pick up the slack at tight end for New Orleans.
Sep 10, 2023
Nabs three catches Week 1
Johnson compiled three receptions (on five targets) for 36 yards during Sunday's 16-15 win versus the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's biggest impact Sunday came at the end of the first half when he caught a pass over the middle for a 27-yard catch-and-run to start New Orleans' two-minute drill. This drive ultimately stalled when quarterback Derek Carr made threw an interception intended for the 6-foot-4 tight end that was undercut by Tennessee safety Amani Hooker. Johnson didn't manage to connect with Carr again throughout the remainder of Sunday's contest, and he ultimately finished with New Orleans' fourth-most targets behind starting wideouts Chris Olave (10), Michael Thomas (eight), and Rasheed Shaheed (six). Johnson is coming off a career-best 2022 season, so he should maintain a significant role in New Orleans' passing game moving forward.
Aug 20, 2023
Impresses during joint practices
Johnson logged another notable performance during Friday's joint practice with the Chargers, Luke Johnson of NOLA.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has continued to improve heading into his fourth season with the Saints, per Luke Johnson. On Friday, the 6-foot-4 tight end beat veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks on a vertical seam route before hauling in a 40-yard, walk-in touchdown during Friday's 11-on-11 sessions. The converted wide receiver, who caught a team-high seven touchdowns last season, has consistently showcased the unique athleticism that makes him a mismatch for opposing linebackers. Johnson has also reportedly taken a jump as a blocker this offseason. This would likely allow him to stay on the field more than he did in 2022 when he played just over 61 percent of New Orleans' offensive snaps. The Saints don't have any proven receiving options outside of Chris Olave, as former star wideout Michael Thomas has played just 10 regular-season games since 2019. This lack of tried-and-true pass-catchers could make Johnson a top receiving option for new quarterback Derek Carr.
Aug 11, 2023
Thriving in camp
Johnson has been a standout performer through two weeks of training camp, Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Duncan predicts that Johnson will deliver a breakout season in 2023 after putting on more muscle to improve his blocking. The 6-foot-4 tight end led the Saints with seven touchdown receptions in 2022. He's a converted wide receiver, so improved blocking should help Johnson see the field more consistently at the expense of more traditional tight ends Foster Moreau and Jimmy Graham.
Jul 27, 2023
Part of deep TE room
Johnson has more competition for snaps after the Saints signed fellow tight end Jimmy Graham on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The Saints certainly have an interesting TE room, featuring a converted wide receiver (Johnson), a 36-year-old who was out of football last year (Graham), a part-time quarterback (Taysom Hill), a guy who battled cancer earlier this offseason (Foster Moreau) and a TE with 63 NFL starts to his name (Jesse James). Of course, Graham and James will need to fight for their roster spots, whereas Johnson, Moreau and Hill have larger contracts with considerable guarantees. There's still hope for Johnson to build on his 2022 breakout and perhaps see 5-6 targets per game after averaging 4.1 last year, but the crowded position group doesn't exactly help his fantasy outlook.
Mar 11, 2023
Re-signs with Saints
Johnson and the Saints have agreed on a two-year contract extension, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is coming off the best season of his young career. He recorded 508 yards and seven touchdowns on 42 receptions. By agreeing to an extension, he will avoid restricted free agency. The 26-year-old projects as the No. 1 tight end for new quarterback Derek Carr.
Jan 9, 2023
Logs last catch of 2022
Johnson hauled in their only target for 21 yards during Sunday's 10-7 loss against Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Johnson logged less than two targets for just the second time in 16 games. The 6-foot-4 tight end saw a massive increase in usage during the 2022 campaign, allowing him to finish with his best season as a pro. The 26-year-old recorded 42 receptions (on 65 targets) for 508 yards and a team-high seven receiving touchdowns. Johnson first emerged as a big-bodied red-zone target in 2021, but he became one of the Saints' top receivers due to the team's rash of injuries at wideout. The No. 1 tight end accumulated the team's second-most targets and receiving yards behind rookie wide receiver Chris Olave as well as the third-most receptions behind running back Alvin Kamara. Johnson will now enter the 2023 offseason as a restricted free agent.
Jan 8, 2023
Suiting up in Week 18
Johnson (quadriceps) is listed as active Sunday against the Panthers, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
After opening Week 18 prep as a non-participant Wednesday due to a quadriceps injury, Johnson proceeded to log back-to-back limited sessions before New Orleans tabbed him as questionable for Sunday's game. Taysom Hill also entered the weekend with the same listing, but both tight ends will be available to the offense. In 15 appearances this season, Johnson's snap share has ranged from 45 to 77 percent, and while he's seen 11 red-zone targets this season en route to seven touchdowns, he's surpassed 50 receiving yards on just two occasions (Weeks 15 and 17).
Jan 6, 2023
Receives questionable tag
The Saints list Johnson (quadriceps) as questionable for Sunday's game against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
New Orleans will tentatively enter the weekend with just one healthy tight end (Adam Trautman), as Taysom Hill (back) is also listed as questionable for the season finale. Considering both Johnson and Hill closed the week with a pair of limited practices, there's a good chance the Saints could have both players available to fill their usual roles. Johnson has been the Saints' top pass-catching tight end this season, as he enters the Week 18 contest with 41 receptions for 487 yards and seven touchdowns on 64 targets across his 15 appearances.
Jan 5, 2023
Increases practice activity
Johnson (quadriceps) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Johnson sat out Wednesday's session due to the quad issue that he apparently picked up coming out of this past Sunday's upset win over the Eagles, during which the tight end recorded five receptions for 62 yards on seven targets. Though the Saints don't have much to play for Week 18, Johnson's return to practice Thursday -- albeit in a limited fashion -- suggests he's aiming to play this weekend against the Panthers. New Orleans will release its final Week 18 injury report later Friday, when it'll be known whether Johnson approaches the season finale with or without an injury designation.
Jan 4, 2023
DNP due to quad injury
Johnson didn't practice Wednesday due to a quadriceps injury.
ANALYSIS
Since the Saints' Week 14 bye, Johnson has sandwiched 60-plus yard efforts around a nine-yard Week 16, totaling 10 catches (on 15 targets) for 138 yards and two touchdowns over the last three games. Now with a quad injury in tow, his status will be monitored as the week goes on to get a sense of his potential to play Sunday versus the Panthers.
Jan 2, 2023
Leads Saints in targets
Johnson recorded five receptions on seven targets for 62 yards in Sunday's 20-10 win over the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
The Saints were able to maintain a run-heavy offense in positive game script, but even so Johnson matched his season high with seven targets. He turned in a few big plays, highlighted by gains of 21 and 17 yards. Johnson was touchdown reliant earlier in the season, though he's now topped 60 receiving yards in two of his last three contests.
Dec 24, 2022
Struggles in blustery conditions
Johnson reeled in one of two targets for nine yards during Saturday's 17-10 win over Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Johnson took a step back following his two-touchdown performance against Atlanta last week. The 6-foot-4 receiving tight end dropped his first target late in the first quarter while laying out for a pass that likely should have been caught. What's worse, this drop led the ball to bounce up in the air for an easy interception to Browns safety Grant Delpit. Johnson's opportunities then fell to the wayside in Saturday's windy and frigid conditions, as the Saints attempted just seven passes while leaning into an option rushing attack over the final three quarters. Johnson still tied with wideout Keith Kirkwood for the team's third-most targets behind Rashid Shaheed (five) and running back Alvin Kamara (four). Johnson will look to bounce back against Philadelphia in Week 17.
Dec 18, 2022
Grabs two TDs in return
Johnson hauled in four of six targets for 67 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 21-18 win versus Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Johnson returned following a one-game absence due to an ankle injury. As a result, he reprised his role as one of the Saints' top receivers, pacing the team in targets and receptions Week 15. Johnson also displayed his ability after the catch by evading multiple Atlanta defenders on his way in a 19-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the game. Johnson now leads the Saints with seven receiving touchdowns this season, all of which have come across his last seven games.
Dec 18, 2022
Back in the fold Sunday
Johnson (ankle) is active for Sunday's game against the Falcons, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Coming off his only absence of the season Week 13 due to an ankle injury, Johnson used the Saints' Week 14 bye to get healthier, which resulted in limited sessions Wednesday through Friday and a questionable designation for Week 15. Fellow tight end Adam Trautman (ankle) experienced the same regimen and designation, but in the end both players will be available Sunday. Johnson has been the better pass catcher of the two this season, recording a cumulative 31-349-5 line on 49 targets in 12 appearances.
Dec 16, 2022
Questionable for Sunday
Johnson (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Falcons, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
The same goes for Adam Trautman (back), with both TEs limited practice participants Wednesday through Friday. Johnson has dominated the tight-end targets in New Orleans this year, though an average of 4.1 per game still makes for a low floor in fantasy. The Saints will release their inactives 90 minutes before the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff Sunday.
Dec 15, 2022
Stays limited at practice
Johnson (ankle) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Prior to the Saints' last game Week 13 against the Buccaneers, Johnson didn't practice at all before he was ruled out on the final injury report. After a Week 14 bye, he's put together back-to-back limited listings, which also can be said for fellow tight end Adam Trautman (ankle). The team's final report of the week Friday may provide some clarity regarding who among the duo has a chance to play Sunday versus the Falcons.
Dec 14, 2022
Practices Wednesday
Johnson (ankle) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, ESPN's Kat Terrell reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was unable to practice leading up to New Orleans' loss to Tampa Bay on Monday night in Week 13, so his return to practice early in this week is an encouraging sign. With the Week 14 bye to give additional healing time, hopefully Johnson will be able to return when New Orleans faces Atlanta in Week 15. Fellow tight end Adam Trautman was also limited in practice Wednesday with an ankle issue, so that will be worth monitoring over the week in order to project Johnson's potential playing time against Atlanta.
Dec 3, 2022
Out for Monday
Johnson (ankle) has been ruled out and will not play Monday against the Buccaneers, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson never managed to practice this week, so it's not entirely surprising to see the touchdown threat sidelined. Expect Adam Trautman to see an increase in snaps while Taysom Hill will continue his usual multi-position production.
Dec 2, 2022
No practice again
Johnson (ankle) didn't practice Friday.
ANALYSIS
The tight end is in danger of missing Monday's game at Tampa Bay after back-to-back missed practices. He played only 45 percent of snaps and finished without a catch in last week's 13-0 loss to San Francisco, following six straight games with multiple receptions and at least 63 percent snap share (not to mention five TDs in the six-game stretch). Adam Trautman and Taysom Hill are the best bets to take on more snaps if Johnson can't play Monday night, though his absence might also free up more playing time for the team's depth wide receivers.
Dec 1, 2022
Sits out practice with ankle injury
Johnson didn't practice Thursday due to an ankle injury, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was idle for the Saints' first Week 13 practice after he played 24 snaps on offense (45 percent share) while failing to reel in either of his targets in this past Sunday's 13-0 loss to the 49ers. The knee issue may explain why Johnson handled his lowest snap share of the season, and the injury at least temporarily puts his status into question for Monday's game at Tampa Bay. Adam Trautman is the next man up for reps at tight end if Johnson is unable to play this week.
Nov 28, 2022
Zero catches in loss
Johnson did not haul in either of his two targets during Sunday's 13-0 loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was held without a catch for just the second time this season. While the 6-foot-4 tight end tied his second-fewest targets of the year, he did have an additional target wiped off the board by a roughing the passer penalty absorbed by Taysom Hill in the fourth quarter. Johnson also played a season-low 47 percent of the Saints' offensive snaps behind fellow tight end Adam Trautman (61 percent), who was only targeted once Week 12. Johnson will look to bounce back in next week's divisional matchup against Tampa Bay on Monday Night Football.
Nov 20, 2022
Remains involved in passing game
Johnson hauled in three of four targets for 47 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 27-20 victory over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Johnson once again played a significant role during this bounce-back performance for the Saints' offense, as he tied running back Alvin Kamara for the team's second-most receiving yards behind wideout Chris Olave. The tight end also caught an eight-yard touchdown from quarterback Andy Dalton in the second quarter, marking his third straight game with at least 42 receiving yards and one score. Outside of a disappointing two-catch performance against the Raiders in Week 8, Johnson has been a consistent factor in the passing game for the past five games, and he should maintain this reliable role next week against San Francisco.
Nov 13, 2022
Heavily involved during loss
Johnson recorded five receptions on seven targets for 44 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 20-10 loss to the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson paced the Saints' pass catchers in receptions and yards, and he also recorded the team's only touchdown of the day. His score came late in the first half when he got open down the right sideline for a relatively easy 15-yard touchdown. He didn't have particularly notable receptions otherwise, though Johnson has now topped 40 receiving yards in three of his last five games -- also tallying four touchdowns in that span.
Nov 8, 2022
Benefits from Baltimore miscue
Johnson recorded two receptions on two targets for 42 yards and a touchdown in Monday's 27-13 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
As was expected, Johnson saw a dip in targets due to the return of Adam Trautman. Despite his lack of involvement, he managed a fortunate 41-yard touchdown reception late in the fourth quarter that came after Marcus Peters mistakenly believed he pushed Johnson out of bounds and gave up on the play. Despite the decent stat line, Johnson is at risk of poor production until he proves capable of racking up consistent targets once again.
Oct 31, 2022
Two catches Sunday
Johnson notched two receptions (on four targets) for 14 yards over 47 offensive snaps during Sunday's 24-0 win against Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played as one of the Saints' top receiving options and caught a pass on two of the team's first three offensive series Sunday. With wide receivers Michael Thomas (foot) and Jarvis Landry (ankle) still sidelined, the 6-foot-4 tight end finished third on the team in targets behind running back Alvin Kamara (10) and wideout Chris Olave (seven). Johnson also saw the bulk of New Orleans' snaps at tight end ahead of Nick Vannett (37) and J.P. Holtz (13), as Adam Trautman (ankle) missed his second game in a row. The 26-year-old Johnson should continue to attract a consistent share of the Saints' targets so long as Thomas and Landry remain out.
Oct 30, 2022
Suiting up in Week 8
Johnson (hamstring) Is active for Sunday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was tacked on to the Saints' injury report Thursday due to a hamstring issue, which limited him in practice Thursday and Friday, but he'll nonetheless be available to the offense. As for fellow tight end Adam Trautman, he'll miss a second consecutive contest due to a left ankle injury. Over the last two outings, Johnson has been looked at often by quarterback Andy Dalton, hauling in nine of 11 targets for 73 yards and two touchdowns.
Oct 28, 2022
Questionable for Week 8
Johnson (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was added to the injury report Thursday and listed as a limited participant the final two days of the week, while fellow tight end Adam Trautman -- also listed as questionable -- managed just one limited practice Friday due to an ankle injury. Trautman was out last week for the Thursday loss to Arizona, in which Johnson caught five passes for 32 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson is the team's top receiving tight end either way, but his projection gets a slight boost if he plays and Trautman doesn't.
Oct 27, 2022
Comes down with hamstring injury
Johnson was limited at Thursday's practice due to a hamstring injury.
ANALYSIS
Johnson avoided the injury report entirely Wednesday, so his inclusion one day later could be indicative of an injury suffered on the practice field. Ultimately, his listing Friday may give a sense of his potential to play Sunday against the Raiders. With Adam Trautman (ankle) unable to practice the last two weeks, Johnson would be in line for top positioning on the TE depth chart if he's able to demonstrate his health in the coming days.
Oct 21, 2022
Pair of touchdown grabs in loss
Johnson secured all five targets for 32 yards and two touchdowns in the Saints' 42-34 loss to the Cardinals on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
The third-year tight end played a prominent role, particularly on the fourth quarter, when he recorded his first pair of touchdown grabs of the season from 17 and one yard out. Johnson had also played a significant role in Week 6 against the Bengals with a 4-41 line on six targets, and with Michael Thomas (foot), Jarvis Landry (ankle) and Adam Trautman (ankle) all out Thursday night, the Oregon product finished even with Tre'Quan Smith for second in receptions. Johnson could continue to enjoy a solid complementary role moving forward, although the eventual return of Thomas and Landry could particularly eat into his opportunities.
Oct 20, 2022
Primed for another big snap count
Johnson is expected to serve as the Saints' starting tight end and primary option at the position in Thursday's game against the Cardinals with Adam Trautman (ankle) ruled out for the contest.
ANALYSIS
Trautman led the position group in snaps from Weeks 3 through 5, but his early exit in last Sunday's loss to the Bengals opened the door for Johnson to clear 70 percent of the offensive snaps for the first time since Week 2. Johnson finished the contest with four receptions for 41 yards on six targets on a 77 percent snap share, and he could see his play count tick up Thursday while Trautman is out for the entirety of the contest. Moreover, the Saints are down two of their top three receivers in Michael Thomas (foot) and Jarvis Landry (ankle), though Chris Olave (concussion) is back in action after a one-game absence. Even so, Johnson could conceivably find himself as the Saints' No. 3 target behind Olave and running back Alvin Kamara, as New Orleans' other depth options at wideout and tight end are mostly underwhelming.
Oct 17, 2022
Four catches in win
Johnson hauled in 4 of 6 targets for 41 yards during Sunday's 30-26 defeat against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Johnson recorded a career-high four receptions with starting wideouts Michael Thomas (foot), Jarvis Landry (ankle) and Chris Olave all sidelined with injuries Week 6. The 6-foot-4 tight end finished third on the team in targets behind running back Alvin Kamara (nine) and wide receiver Marquez Callaway (seven). Johnson also played 56 of New Orleans' 72 total offensive snaps compared to just 23 snaps and 16 snaps for fellow tight ends J.P. Holtz and Adam Trautman, respectively. While Olave did clear concussion protocol Monday, Johnson could see yet another prominent target share if Thomas and Landry remain out during Thursday's game against the Cardinals.
Oct 11, 2022
Nabs one catch in win
Johnson caught one of his two targets for 13 yards over 44 offensive snaps in Saturday's 39-32 victory versus the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Johnson served as the Saints' No. 2 tight end for the second week in a row behind Adam Trautman, who caught two of his three targets for 32 yards and a touchdown over 50 (of 77) offensive snaps Sunday. As a result, the backup played a season-high 19 special-teams snaps. Johnson was also flagged for a false start midway through the fourth quarter, thus pushing New Orleans into a 4th-and-7 before punting from Seattle's 47-yard line. Nevertheless, he should continue to see significant playing time, as the Saints will likely lean into the running game with starting wideouts Michael Thomas (foot), Jarvis Landry (ankle) and Chris Olave (concussion) all banged up.
Oct 3, 2022
Fall back into No. 2 role
Johnson recorded three receptions (four targets) for 33 yards during Sunday's 28-25 loss to the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played a season-low 29 offensive snaps behind Adam Trautman (39 offensive snaps), who recorded three receptions for 37 yards as the Saints' starting tight end Sunday. The 6-foot-4 pass catcher still received one more target from starting quarterback Andy Dalton compared to Trautman, and the two tight ends registered their largest combined receiving effort of the season with starting wideout Michael Thomas (foot) out in Week 4. Johnson has now recorded at least two receptions and four targets in all but one game through four weeks, though he has yet to bring in a receiving touchdown this season.
Sep 26, 2022
Fails to haul in lone target
Johnson did not record a catch and was targeted once over 47 offensive snaps during Sunday's 22-14 loss to the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson did not catch a pass for the first time in 2022, as he almost perfectly split snaps with Adam Trautman, who played 44 of his 52 snaps on offense. Meanwhile, fourth-string tight end Nick Vannett caught his lone target for five yards in his first game of the season. Johnson will have a solid opportunity to connect with quarterback Jameis Winston if wideouts Michael Thomas (toe), Jarvis Landry (foot) and Tre'Quan Smith (concussion) are forced to sit out in Week 4.
Sep 19, 2022
Targeted seven times in Week 2
Johnson caught four of seven targets for 40 yards in Sunday's 20-10 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has seen significant involvement through two games, reaching the 40-yard mark in both while accruing 12 total targets. The converted wide receiver has become Jameis Winston's preferred target at the tight end position while Adam Trautman has been a non-factor in the passing game.
Sep 14, 2022
Involved on offense Week 1
Johnson secured two of five targets for 43 yards during Sunday's 27-26 win over the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Johnson recorded a career game during Sunday's comeback victory. He led all Saints TEs in targets, though Taysom Hill rushed four times for 81 yards and a touchdown while also making one two-yard catch. The 2020 UDFA is only a deep depth stash for fantasy at this point, but his involvement will be worth monitoring Week 2 versus Tampa Bay. He converted positions from wide receiver last offseason.
Mar 3, 2022
Signs one-year deal
Johnson, who had been an exclusive rights free agent, has signed a one-year deal with the Saints, Luke Johnson of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson, who joined the Saints as a UDFA in 2020, switched from wideout to tight end last season and ended up logging 13 catches (on 22 targets) for 159 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games. Now that he's back in the fold, the 25-year-old will continue to work in a New Orleans TE corp that also includes Adam Trautman, Nick Vannett, Ethan Wolf and Dylan Soehner, with Garrett Griffin slated to become a restricted free agent. As long as Trautman remains healthy and available, however, Johnson is off the fantasy radar in most formats.
Jan 17, 2022
Four touchdowns at tight end
Johnson caught 13 of 21 targets for 159 yards and four touchdowns over 14 games in 2021.
ANALYSIS
After converting from wide receiver during the offseason, Johnson was one of three New Orleans tight ends to have a sizable role in 2021. However, Johnson ran a route on over 52 percent of his offensive snaps while Adam Trautman (33.8) and Vannett (36.3) hovered around one third. Moreover, Johnson's four touchdowns were more than Trautman (two) and Vannett (one) combined. While his overall stat line still wasn't very useful for fantasy purposes, Johnson had impressive moments for an undrafted player who changed positions ahead of his second season in the pros. As an exclusive-rights free agent, Johnson should be back in New Orleans in 2022, when he'll again look to push Trautman and Vannett for receiving reps at tight end.
Dec 28, 2021
Activated off reserve/COVID-19 list
Johnson was activated off of the Saints' reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
The tight end was placed on the COVID list last Wednesday and missed Monday's loss to the Dolphins. Johnson returned to the team Tuesday and will be back in the lineup for the Saints' Week 17 matchup with the Panthers.
Dec 27, 2021
Won't play Monday
Johnson (illness) wasn't activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list prior to the Saints' deadline for Week 16 roster moves and won't be available for Monday's game against the Dolphins, Katherine Terrell of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson wasn't able to clear the NFL's COVID-19 return-to-play protocol after landing on the list Wednesday following a positive test of the virus. Adam Trautman is also on the list and Garrett Griffin (hamstring) was recently moved to injured reserve, leaving the Saints with Nick Vannett and practice-squad call-up Ethan Wolf as their only options at tight end Week 16.
Dec 21, 2021
Shifts to COIVD list
The Saints have placed Johnson on the reserve/COVID list, Kyle Mosley of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson reportedly tested positive for the virus. It is unclear if he is vaccinated or not. If he is, he will still have a chance to clear the league's health and safety protocols before Sunday's matchup with the Dolphins. Adam Trautman and Nick Vannett would be the team's only healthy tight ends if he is ultimately unable to play.
Dec 13, 2021
One target against Jets
Johnson secured his only target for 15 yards during Sunday's win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Johnson saw roughly half the snaps of Nick Vannett, who ended up leading the offense with 44 receiving yards on six targets. However, even if Johnson started seeing more playing time, no Saints receivers are safe for fantasy purposes as long as the offense flows through the rushing abilities of Taysom Hill and Alvin Kamara.
Dec 2, 2021
Returns to game
Johnson (neck) has returned to Thursday's game against the Cowboys, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was absent for several drives due to a neck injury, but he returned to the field with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. He hauled in his lone target for 27 yards early in the contest.
Dec 2, 2021
Questionable to return
Johnson is questionable to return to Thursday's game against the Cowboys due to a neck injury, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson went down awkwardly following a big gain in the first quarter of Thursday's matchup and headed to the locker room after spending several minutes in the medical tent. Garrett Griffin should see a slight uptick in playing time if Johnson is unable to return.
Nov 26, 2021
No targets in Trautman's absence
Johnson was not targeted during Thursday's 31-6 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
While the lack of opportunities in the passing game is a disappointment, Johnson at least led Saints tight ends in snaps (24) in the first game without Adam Trautman (knee). However, that only equated to 43 percent of the available offensive snaps. Unless he starts seeing more playing time, Johnson will not be a trustworthy fantasy option.
Nov 22, 2021
Totals 36 yards
Johnson caught two of three targets for 36 yards during Sunday's 40-29 loss to Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Back in action after being made a healthy scratch in Week 11, Johnson saw a trio of targets for the fourth time in eight games en route to a career high in receiving yards. With starting tight end Adam Trautman (knee) now expected to miss four to six weeks, we could be seeing a lot more of the second-year Oregon product down the stretch. However, a Week 12 matchup with Buffalo's top defense probably isn't the best spot for Johnson to build upon this performance.
Nov 21, 2021
Healthy scratch Sunday
Johnson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's contest against the Eagles, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is the odd man out with Nick Vannett (knee) making his season debut. This marks Johnson's second healthy scratch in his last three contests.
Nov 14, 2021
Back in action
Johnson caught two of three targets for 36 yards during Sunday's 23-21 loss to Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's season seemed to hit a low point when he was a healthy scratch in Week 9 following three straight games in which he only saw one target. However, the converted wideout was back on the game-day roster and produced one of the longest gains of the day for the Saints' sputtering offense. The 25-year-old will look to stay involved in Week 11 against the Eagles, who have been among the weakest units at defending tight ends in 2021.
Nov 7, 2021
Inactive Sunday
Johnson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's contest against the Falcons, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has played over 20 percent of the Saints' offensive snaps in four games this season, but he will be a healthy scratch in Week 9. Adam Trautman and Garrett Griffin are the only active tight ends for New Orleans on Sunday.
Oct 27, 2021
Catches one pass in win
Johnson caught his lone target for eight yards in Monday's 13-10 win.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played second fiddle to Adam Trautman at the tight end position, seeing just one target to Trautman's three. Despite the Saints' high passing volume, Johnson should be ignored for fantasy purposes.
Oct 3, 2021
Scores third TD of season
Johnson caught two of three targets for 20 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 27-21 loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
It's becoming clear that Johnson is the Saints' preferred receiving option at tight end. Even though Adam Trautman saw six looks in the season opener, he has seen just two targets in three games since while Johnson has already seen three targets three times this year. While he's not seeing enough volume to be anything more than a touchdown-dependent fantasy option, Johnson's role in the red zone makes him a respectable dart throw for deep-league fantasy owners who are desperate for production.
Sep 27, 2021
Small role against Patriots
Johnson was not targeted during Sunday's 28-13 win over the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Johnson logged a season-low eight offensive snaps and actually saw more action on special teams in this one. Meanwhile, Adam Trautman led Saints tight ends with over 80 percent of the snaps while Garrett Griffin set a new season-high with 48 percent. If the Saints move forward with a similar run-heavy approach that involves heavy doses of Taysom Hill, Johnson could struggle for playing time, let alone offensive production.
Sep 20, 2021
Gets another handful of targets
Johnson caught one of three targets for 23 yards during Sunday's 26-7 loss to Carolina.
ANALYSIS
After seeing 19 percent of the offensive snaps in Week 1, Johnson jumped to 41 percent Sunday while Adam Trautman fell from 82 to 52. While it's possible that game script played a large role in those disparities considering the Saints attempted nearly half as many rushing attempts compared to the season opener, Johnson saw three looks in both games, and it looks like he could have some sort of role in the passing game regardless of the situation. Next up is a Week 3 trip to New England.
Sep 13, 2021
Catches two touchdowns in opener
Johnson hauled in all three of his receptions for 21 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 38-3 win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Johnson served as a wide receiver during his rookie year in 2020, but he transitioned to tight end during the offseason and became more involved in the offense during camp. The 25-year-old played just 12 offensive snaps Sunday, but he saw some work in the red zone during the blowout win. Although fellow tight end Adam Trautman led the team with six targets against Green Bay, Johnson made an immediate impact at his new position.
Aug 31, 2021
Earns roster spot
Johnson made the regular-season roster at tight end, Mike Triplett of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson figures to have some sort of role as a pass-catching tight end throughout the year. However, with top receiver Michael Thomas (ankle) set to miss the first six weeks of the season while both Adam Trautman (ankle) and Nick Vannett (knee) bounce back from minor injuries, Johnson could have a chance to show what he can do in an expanded role as soon as Week 1.
Aug 16, 2021
Doing well in new role
Johnson is more involved in the offense since transitioning to tight end, Luke Johnson of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was mainly used to block from a receiver position during his rookie year, but he has since been moved to tight end in Year 2 and it appears to be a more natural fit for the 6-foot-4, 231-pound Oregon product. Not only can Johnson still be used to block, but he is more of a receiving mismatch against linebackers than he is against cornerbacks, evidenced by his two-catch, 71-yard performance during last weekend's preseason game against Baltimore. Add in the fact that none of New Orleans' other depth options at tight end seem to have stood out this summer, Johnson seems to have a great chance at securing a roster spot yet again.
Jun 22, 2021
Spending time at tight end
Johnson spent time working at tight end this offseason, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was mostly asked to block when active on game days during his rookie year. The Saints have since talked about moving him from receiver to tight end, and Johnson practicing at that position during spring workouts all but confirms that notion. At 6-foot-4 and 231 pounds, Johnson will probably need to put on a little weight in order to excel as an in-line blocker, but the second-year Oregon product could potentially carve out a significant role as a pass catcher considering the Saints have little receiving talent at tight end behind Adam Trautman.
Jan 30, 2021
Minimally involved in 2020
Johnson caught four passes for 39 yards in his first NFL season.
ANALYSIS
The rookie out of Oregon barely saw the field in his inaugural campaign, and it will be difficult to project him for much more usage in his second season. Johnson produced his minimal numbers despite multiple injuries in the Saints' receiving corps throughout the season. If Michael Thomas, Deonte Harris, Tre'Quan Smith, and Emmanuel Sanders can remain healthy in 2021, there will be even more limited targets up for grabs.
Jan 10, 2021
Sitting out Sunday
Johnson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's wild-card game against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Johnson played in each of the final five regular-season games, but he and Austin Carr will serve as healthy scratches for the first round of playoffs. Lil'Jordan Humphrey, who was elevated from the practice squad Saturday, will add depth behind Michael Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Deonte Harris and Marquez Callaway.
Dec 21, 2020
Season-high four targets
Johnson was held without a catch on four targets in the Saints' 32-29 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
For the third week in a row, Johnson saw action on the active roster, and he drew a season-high four targets in Sunday's loss. Even with increased opportunities, Johnson won't be on the fantasy radar when New Orleans takes on Minnesota in Week 16.
Dec 19, 2020
Bumps to active roster
The Saints signed Johnson to the active roster from the practice squad Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson looks set to see action in a third straight contest of the season, and his fifth game overall. He had one catch for 11 yards against the Eagles last weekend, but with Michael Thomas (ankle) now on IR, it's conceivable that New Orleans' depth wideouts could get more opportunities.
Dec 14, 2020
Active roster stint short-lived
Johnson reverted to the Saints' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Johnson only saw five snaps on the offensive side for New Orleans in Week 14, but he hauled in his lone target for an 11-yard gain. The rest of the Oregon product's involvement came on special teams, where he collected nine snaps. If Deonte Harris (neck) returns to the receiving corps Week 15, it would reduce Johnson's likelihood of carving out a gameday role.
Dec 12, 2020
Back with active roster
The Saints elevated Johnson to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is being called up for the fourth time this season. Over the previous three games, Johnson caught just one pass for a five-yard gain. He'll add depth in Sunday's matchup against the Eagles.
Dec 7, 2020
Headed to practice squad
Johnson reverted back to New Orlean's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Johnson was on the field for 20 offensive snaps and 13 on special teams, but he failed to record a catch. This marked the third game he's played in this season.
Dec 5, 2020
Rises from practice squad
The Saints elevated Johnson from the practice squad Saturday, Katherine Terrell of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marquez Callaway (knee) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, and Deonte Harris (neck) is considered questionable for Sunday's game against the Falcons. In turn, the Saints elevated both Johnson and Tommylee Lewis to the active roster to pad their depth at wide receiver. Johnson has suited up twice this season, recording one reception over 77 snaps on offense.
Nov 2, 2020
Sent back to practice squad
Johnson reverted to New Orleans' practice squad Monday after recording one catch for five yards during Sunday's 26-23 overtime win against the Bears, per the NFL's official transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's workload was certainly encouraging, as the 24-year-old led all Saints skill-position players in fielding 64 of 74 offensive snaps. His three targets were also tied for fourth most on the team, but New Orleans may be getting some of its perimeter weapons back this week in a road trip to Tampa Bay -- most notably, Michael Thomas (hamstring), who has potential to make his first appearance since the season opener after logging limited practice sessions Thursday and Friday of last week.
Oct 31, 2020
Adds depth at receiver
The Saints elevated Johnson to the active roster Saturday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson, Austin Carr and Tommylee Lewis were all added to the Saints' active roster Saturday, as the team prepares to face the Bears on Sunday without Michael Thomas (hamstring), Marquez Callaway (ankle) or Emmanuel Sanders (COVID-19). Johnson wasn't targeted over 13 offensive snaps last week, but his role could grow against the Bears with Callway out of the picture. Pinpointing one receiver to dominate seems like a fool's errand, though.
Oct 26, 2020
Dips back down to practice squad
Johnson reverted to the Saints' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
ANALYSIS
The Oregon product made his first career NFL appearance during Sunday's 27-24 win against the Panthers, fielding 19 percent of the offensive snaps with both Michael Thomas (hamstring/ankle) and Emmanuel Sanders (reserve/COVID-19 list) inactive for Week 7. Johnson did not garner a single target, however, as Marquez Callaway, Tre'Quan Smith and Deonte Harris picked up most of the slack at wide receiver.
Oct 25, 2020
Elevates from practice roster
The Saints elevated Johnson to the active roster Saturday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
ANALYSIS
The undrafted rookie out of Oregon is in line for his NFL debut. He gets the call because Michael Thomas (ankle/hamstring) and Emmanuel Sanders (COVID-19 list) won't suit up Sunday, so he'll add depth at wide receiver. In his senior collegiate season, Johnson posted a 30-467-4 line over eight games.
Sep 9, 2020
Clears waivers
Johnson cleared waivers Sunday and signed with the Saints' practice squad.
ANALYSIS
Johnson spent the entire training camp in New Orleans after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent, but he couldn't make the 53-man roster. He's one of three wide receivers on the Saints' practice squad.
