Wins backup job in Detroit
Allen is in line to begin the 2025 regular season as the Lions' second quarterback, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was in a battle with Hendon Hooker for the number two slot at quarterback behind Jared Goff in Detroit, and Allen ultimately won out when Hooker was cut Monday. In Allen's last regular-season start back in 2022 with Houston, he completed 20 of 39 pass attempts for 201 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, adding two rushes for one yard.
Aug 23, 2025
Perfect in preseason finale
Allen completed all five of his passes for 66 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 26-7 preseason loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old QB may have locked up the No. 2 job for the Lions with this performance. Allen got the start and while he took a sack to end Detroit's first possession, he was laser-focused on the second, ending the drive with a 33-yard TD pass to Isaac TeSlaa. Hendon Hooker, meanwhile, went 6-for-11 for 70 yards and an INT after taking over from Allen. Jared Goff is locked into the starting role for the Lions, but Allen appears to be the next man up should anything happen to him.
Aug 16, 2025
Tosses two TDs in preseason loss
Allen completed 14 of 17 pass attempts for 124 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 24-17 loss to the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Allen has now impressed in back-to-back preseason appearances, combining for 244 passing yards and four touchdowns in those contests, without an interception. While Allen has outplayed fellow reserve quarterback Hendon Hooker thus far throughout the preseason, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that the backup competition behind Jared Goff remains open. Lions coach Dan Campbell said Hooker may get the start during Detroit's preseason finale against the Texans on Sat., Aug. 23, but both signal-callers figure to get substantial reps.
Aug 8, 2025
Perfect passer rating Friday
Allen completed seven of eight pass attempts for 120 yards and two touchdowns while taking two carries for 10 yards in Friday's preseason tilt in Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Allen entered the contest with a little over five minutes left in the first half and proceeded to orchestrate three consecutive scoring drives. two of which resulting in touchdowns. Fellow backup Hendon Hooker started Friday's exhibition and produced little offensively while turning the ball over twice. Both signal-callers are vying to serve as Jared Goff's primary backup this upcoming season, with Allen having the clear early advantage based on performance and experience.
Aug 1, 2025
Pair of picks in preseason opener
Allen completed nine of 14 passes for 91 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions and rushed twice for five yards during the Lions' 34-7 preseason loss to the Chargers in Thursday night's Hall of Fame Game.
ANALYSIS
Allen, who's competing with Hendon Hooker for the No. 2 role behind Jared Goff, got off to an auspicious start by throwing interceptions on the Lions' second and third possessions. Allen did bounce back to helm a 15-play, 60-yard drive that culminated in a three-yard touchdown run by Craig Reynolds, finishing his night on a high note. Allen played the entire first half before giving way to Hooker, and it's possible the division of labor is the same for Detroit's next preseason game on Friday night, Aug. 8 against the Falcons.
Jul 23, 2025
In battle for No. 2 role
Allen has seen work with both the second-team and third-team offensive units at Lions training camp, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen worked with the second-team offense to open training camp Sunday before Hendon Hooker replaced him with the second-team unit Monday. Allen signed with the Lions in the offseason, and he'll compete with Hooker for the backup quarterback role behind Jared Goff this season. The 29-year-old hasn't played in any meaningful action since 2022 with the Texans, when he completed 46 of 78 passes for 416 yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing four interceptions, in two starts with the team. Hooker spent the majority of the 2024 campaign as Goff's primary backup and likely has the early edge over Allen for the No. 2 role.
Mar 13, 2025
Joins Detroit's QB room
Allen signed a contract with the Lions on Thursday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen spent the 2024 season with Pittsburgh and operated as their emergency quarterback for most of the campaign. He'll now join the Lions' quarterback room as an experienced backup, and he will likely compete with Hendon Hooker for the No. 2 job to Jared Goff.
Feb 18, 2025
Operates as third wheel
Allen appeared in one regular-season game for the Steelers in 2024, completing his only pass attempt for 19 yards.
ANALYSIS
Allen was offered little opportunity to play football, being behind Russell Wilson and Justin Fields on the team's positional depth chart. With Pittsburgh's quarterback situation for 2025 up in the air and Allen set to become an unrestricted free agent, it's unclear what the chances are that the Houston product will be brought back to the franchise.
Jan 11, 2025
Emergency QB for wild-card round
Allen (coach's decision) is inactive for Saturday's AFC wild-card game against the Ravens, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
As the Steelers' emergency quarterback Saturday, Allen will only be allowed to see the field if both starter Russell Wilson and backup Justin Fields were to be taken out of the game due to injury, illness or ejection.
Jan 4, 2025
Emergency QB for Week 18
Allen (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen will be the Steelers' emergency quarterback for Saturday's regular-season finale. He'll only see the field if Russell Wilson and Justin Fields were both forced to exit due to injury, illness or ejection.
Dec 15, 2024
Emergency QB again for Week 15
Allen (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Allen will serve as the Steelers' emergency quarterback for the second game in a row. His only chance to play will come only if both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are forced to exit due to injury.
Nov 21, 2024
Emergency QB versus Cleveland
Allen (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against Cleveland, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official website reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen will operate as the team's emergency quarterback for the second time in three weeks Thursday. He will only enter the game if both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are knocked out with injuries.
Nov 10, 2024
Emergency QB for Week 10
Allen (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against Washington.
ANALYSIS
Allen will serve as the Steelers' emergency quarterback Sunday. He will only see the field if both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields were to exit due to injury.
Aug 10, 2024
Passes for 193 yards Friday
Allen completed 17 of 23 pass attempts for 193 yards, a touchdown and an interception while rushing once for 11 yards during Friday's 20-12 preseason loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Justin Fields drew the start during Friday's preseason opener, but Allen saw most of the playing time under center. He led the team to two scores in the second half and completed four passes of at least 24 yards. Despite Friday's solid showing, Allen will have to continue to compete for a roster spot as a backup as the preseason progresses since the Steelers also have Fields and Russell Wilson as options at quarterback.
Mar 25, 2024
Lands in Pittsburgh
The Steelers agreed to terms on a contract with Allen on Monday, Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen lands in a quarterback room that just brought in new faces Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Currently Wilson looks to be the favorite to start, though coach Mike Tomlin has stated that Fields will get opportunities to compete. Allen, meanwhile, looks firmly comfortable as the No. 3 option on the depth chart. He served as the backup to Josh Allen in 2023.
Mar 7, 2024
Bad development for positioning
The Bills signed veteran quarterback Mitch Trubisky to a two-year deal on Wednesday, presumably to serve as Josh Allen's top backup.
ANALYSIS
Kyle Allen played the backup role for Josh Allen in 2023, but with the latter mostly healthy that yielded only spot mop-up duties, as the former never even attempted a pass. Kyle Allen likely won't be doing that for the Bills in 2024 following the Trubisky signing, as Trubisky comes with a better resume and has a first-round label from 2017. Plus, Trubisky is better suited to serve as at least a partial replica of Josh Allen, as both have strong arms, can be tough to tackle and have running ability. There may no longer be room for Kyle Allen on the roster.
Jan 23, 2024
Limited action in seven games
Allen finished the 2023 regular season with seven appearances, most of it coming in mop-up duty, and zero starts.
ANALYSIS
Mop-up duty by be selling Allen's role a bit strong, as he never attempted a pass and rushed for minus-13 yards. Given the amount of time that teammate Josh Allen has to play the role of Superman and his propensity for running the ball so frequently, it's a bit of a surprise that Kyle Allen wasn't needed for at least 1-2 starts. We'll see if the Bills bring him back for the No. 2 role again next season, where he'd potentially be given the keys to a fantasy luxury vehicle if his teammate were to miss any time. At the very least, it would save some extra tailoring work for the team equipment manager again.
Dec 20, 2023
Mops up in Week 15
Allen played Buffalo's final seven snaps on offense in Sunday's 31-10 win over the Cowboys, attempting no passes and kneeling down twice for minus-2 yards.
ANALYSIS
Allen checked into the game with 10:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, when Buffalo held a commanding 31-3 lead. The Bills didn't ask Allen to do anything more than to keep the clock moving, as the team ran the ball on all seven of his plays. Allen has yet to attempt a pass this season despite coming off the bench on six occasions this season, usually in garbage-time scenarios.
Sep 26, 2023
Sees action in Week 3
Allen saw action for the second straight week, playing 11 snaps in Buffalo's 37-3 win over Washington in Week 3. He did not attempt a pass and rushed twice for minus-2 yards.
ANALYSIS
The score indicates exactly why Allen was in there -- for the second game in a row the Bills blew out their opponent and used the fourth quarter to keep franchise quarterback Josh Allen in one piece. What's not shown in the stats is that Kyle Allen actually led the Bills to their final touchdown drive, mostly by handing the ball off to his teammates and letting them continue to run over the Washington D. Kyle Allen does have value if Josh were ever to miss a few games, given the firepower the team has on offense.
Aug 31, 2023
Currently No. 2 behind Josh Allen
Allen's teammate Matt Barkley was placed on IR this week due to an elbow injury, leaving Allen as the only healthy backup to starter Josh Allen.
ANALYSIS
The Bills will likely bring one more quarterback into the fold, but the talk is that they're looking for more of a practice squad guy. That would leave Kyle Allen as the clear-cut backup to Josh all season, a spot that holds decent value if your league goes deep into backup territory, as this is usually a top offense with plenty of talent at the skill spots.
Aug 23, 2023
Shines in second preseason game
Allen completed 12 of 15 passes for 112 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Saturday's preseason game against the Steelers, good for a 120.0 rating.
ANALYSIS
Allen was heavily outplayed by teammate and competitor for the No. 2 spot, Matt Barkley, in the first preseason game, but Barkley was picked off three times Saturday and also suffered an elbow injury, so Allen appears to have quickly flipped the script and stands as the favorite to back up Josh Allen come Week 1.
Mar 15, 2023
Lands with Buffalo
The Bills agreed to terms with Allen on Wednesday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
ANALYSIS
One of Josh Allen's best friends, Kyle will slide in as the favorite for No. 2 duties in Buffalo with Case Keenum signing in Houston. 27-year-old Allen has made 19 career starts in the NFL, completing 62.6 percent of his passes with 26 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
Dec 18, 2022
Another healthy scratch
Allen (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game versus the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
For a second consecutive contest, Allen will don street clothes while the duo of Davis Mills and Jeff Driskel are slated to split quarterback reps for the Texans. Considering the team was able to keep the game close Week 14 at Dallas before an eventual 27-23 loss, coach Lovie Smith may continue to roll with this breakdown of signal-callers for the rest of the campaign. In any case, Allen has just three more chances to make an appearance before the offseason begins.
Dec 11, 2022
Plummets to third on depth chart
Allen (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Allen will go from starting the Texans' past two games to falling all the way to third on the depth chart this week, as Davis Mills will get the nod under center while practice-squad call-up Jeff Driskel serves as his backup. During his two-game run in the starting lineup, Allen completed 46 of 78 pass attempts for two touchdowns and four interceptions while also losing a fumble as the Texans suffered double-digit losses to the Dolphins and Browns.
Dec 7, 2022
Returns to backup role
Allen will return to a backup role after two starts, with Davis Mills having reclaimed the Texans' starting QB job ahead of Sunday's game against the Cowboys, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen replaced Mills in Week 12, with the Texans 1-8-1 at that juncture, however following two straight losses since then, the team will give Mills another chance to helm the offense. As a result, Allen will head back to the bench this weekend after having completed 46 of 78 pass attempts for 416 yards, with two TDs and four picks during his starting stint.
Dec 7, 2022
Set to return to No. 2 role
The Texans plan to bench Allen and appoint Davis Mills to the starting quarterback role for Sunday's game in Dallas, leagues sources tell Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston.
ANALYSIS
Mills opened the season as the Texans' starter before being benched after guiding Houston to a 1-8-1 record through the first 11 weeks. Houston was hopeful that Allen might provide a slight upgrade under center, but he was unable to even meet the low bar that Mills had set; he completed 59 percent of his throws for 5.3 yards per attempt, two touchdowns and four interceptions the past two games in double-digit losses to the Dolphins and Browns. Head coach Lovie Smith thus appears set to give Mills another look as the starter, though the Texans may not confirm as much until later in the week.
Dec 4, 2022
Poor in loss to Browns
Allen completed 20 of 39 passes for 201 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Sunday's 27-14 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Allen made his second consecutive start for the Texans, and he turned in another unimpressive performance. He averaged only 5.2 yards per attempt, a mark that is even poorer than it appears when considering that Allen accounted for 75 yards and his lone touchdown in garbage time on Houston's final offensive possession. It's unclear whether Allen will make it through the rest of the season as the team's starter, but he has not shown any ability to improve its offensive performance.
Nov 27, 2022
Struggles in Week 12 start
Allen completed 26 of 39 passes for 215 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and rushed four times for 12 yards in the Texans' 30-15 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Allen's final numbers were serviceable, but a good portion were accumulated after the Texans were already down 30-0. The fifth-year pro's second pick short-circuited any hopes of a last-gasp comeback for Houston, as it came with 2:48 remaining at the Dolphins' 19-yard line. Aaron Wilson of KPRC-2 reports that head coach Lovie Smith plans on affording Allen another start in Week 13 at home against the Browns, a game that will mark Deshaun Watson's first regular-season game action since he was a member of the Texans back in December 2020.
Nov 25, 2022
Confirmed as Week 12 starter
Coach Lovie Smith confirmed Friday that Allen will start at QB for the Texans versus the Dolphins on Sunday, Deepi Sidhu of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
With the Texans 1-8-1 through 10 games, the team will give Allen the starting nod this weekend over 2021 third-rounder Davis Mills. It remains to be seen what the team's QB plans are beyond Week 12, but for now Allen represents a fantasy lineup option for those who had been utilizing Mills, as well as for managers looking to add signal-caller depth in deeper formats.
Nov 23, 2022
Trending toward Week 12 start
Allen is slated to receive first-team QB reps Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, while coach Lovie Smith declined to name a starting QB in his press conference Wednesday, Allen is expected to draw the start in place of Davis Mills on Sunday against the Dolphins. In such a scenario, Allen is worthy of Week 12 lineup consideration for those who would normally utilize Mills, while representing an option for those in deeper leagues looking to add signal-caller depth.
Nov 22, 2022
Could replace Mills
Houston head coach Lovie Smith suggested changes are coming, which could involve Allen replacing Davis Mills as quarterback, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports. "We're not pleased with where we are. Do we need to do some things differently? Yes. We will," the coach said.
ANALYSIS
Smith's comments struck a different tone than the previous week when he was asked about making a change at quarterback. "Made some decisions on how we're going to go forward. Like all changes, anything that we do from week to week, we've got to talk to the players before we talk to you," Smith added. Mills had just 22 passing yards and a pick-six in the first half of Sunday's loss to the Commanders, one week after he had just 35 yards in the first half against the Giants. It's been two years since Allen started a game in the NFL, but the Texans need to shake up an offense that ranks last in yards per game and 30th in points per game.
Sep 11, 2022
Inactive for Week 1
Allen (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's season opener against the Colts, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen will open the season as the third quarterback on the depth chart behind Davis Mills and Jeff Driskel, who was elevated from the practice squad Friday. Allen was expected to be the primary backup behind Mills to open the season, so the move is somewhat surprising.
Aug 16, 2022
Returns to practice Tuesday
Allen (COVID-19 protocols) returned to practice Tuesday, Mark Berman of Fox 26 reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was sidelined for Saturday's preseason game after testing positive for COVID-19, but he's since cleared protocols and returned to practice Tuesday. He's currently competing with Jeff Driskel for the backup job behind Davis Mills, so Allen will likely get plenty of action in Friday's preseason game against the Rams.
Aug 11, 2022
Tests positive for COVID-19
Allen won't play in Saturday's preseason contest versus the Saints after testing positive for COVID-19, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In a press conference earlier Thursday, coach Lovie Smith told Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com that Allen wouldn't play due to personal reasons, but the quarterback instead has entered COVID-19 protocols. Allen thus will need to stay away from Texans facilities for at least five days. With Allen sidelined, Davis Mills and Jeff Driskel will handle all the QB reps for the team Saturday.
Aug 11, 2022
Will sit out Saturday
Texans coach Lovie Smith said that Allen will not play in Saturday's preseason game against New Orleans due to personal reasons, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith also added that Allen missed practice Thursday for similar undisclosed reasons, though it's still unclear just how long the quarterback is expected to miss this preseason. The 26-year-old signal-caller signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with Houston in March after completing 12 of his 19 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown over two games with Washington last season. In Allen's absence, journeyman backup Jeff Driskel figures to see increased run in Saturday's game behind starter Davis Mills.
Mar 16, 2022
Set to sign with Texans
The Texans are signing Allen to a one-year deal, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that Allen's deal is for $2.5 million and includes $2.25 million fully guaranteed. The 26-year-old -- who spent the last two seasons with Washington -- will provide Houston with added QB depth behind Davis Mills, with Deshaun Watson poised to be traded in the coming days.
Mar 10, 2022
Won't be tendered by Washington
Allen isn't in line to receive a contract tender from the Commanders, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen earned a roster spot as Washington's backup quarterback in 2021, but he made just two appearances and completed 12 of 19 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. He'll be free to sign with any other team starting next week after the Commanders acquired Carson Wentz from the Colts on Wednesday.
Jan 12, 2022
Barely plays in 2021
Allen made two appearances during the 2021 campaign, completing 12 of 19 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown for Washington.
ANALYSIS
Allen came back from last year's broken leg and earned a spot on the team as the No. 3 QB, then quickly rose to No. 2 after Ryan Fitzpatrick injured his hip in the season opener. No matter, Allen barely ended up playing, with Taylor Heinicke enjoying a healthy season under center, though his performance was less than stellar, especially toward the end. Allen is scheduled for restricted free agency in the offseason, and presumably will be viewed as a backup whether he stays in Washington or ends up elsewhere. Heinicke, meanwhile, is signed through 2022.
Jan 9, 2022
Might have Week 18 role
Washington head coach Ron Rivera didn't close the door on the possibility of Allen having a role in the game plan behind starter Taylor Heinicke in Sunday's contest against the Giants, Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Sports Washington reports. "We'll start off with Taylor, then we'll go from there," Rivera said.
ANALYSIS
Prior to Week 17, Rivera suggested that Allen would "probably" play behind Heinicke in both of the final two games of the regular season. That didn't come to fruition in the 20-16 loss to the Eagles last week, as Heinicke played all 61 of Washington's snaps on offense. Rivera could be more open to getting Allen some work in the season finale, but it may first take a poor showing from Heinicke early in the contest for the coach to turn the offense over to the backup quarterback. Allen's only two appearances this season have both come against the Cowboys in Week 14 and 16. On the first occasion, Heinicke missed a few plays with an injury, and on the second, Washington was resting him after the game turned into a blowout.
Dec 27, 2021
May play behind Heinicke in Week 17
Head coach Ron Rivera said he expects Allen to appear in relief of starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke at some point during Sunday's game against the Eagles, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Heinicke will retain the top job heading into Week 17, his place atop the depth chart is on shaky ground on the heels of disastrous starts against the Cowboys that bookended a Week 15 absence against the Eagles while he was on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Between the two games against Dallas, Heinicke completed only 18 of 47 attempts (38.3 percent) for 243 yards (5.2 YPA) and a 2:3 TD:INT, with Washington losing by a combined margin of 83-34. Allen, meanwhile, relieved Heinicke in both contests, though the latter's brief departure from the Week 15 loss was the result of an injury. In small samples of action in those games, Allen completed 12 of 19 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown, but over a larger body of work in his first three professional seasons, the 25-year-old was one of the more turnover-prone signal-callers in the NFL. Assuming Rivera sticks to his plan to have both quarterbacks play Week 17, neither will be an appealing fantasy option while handling less than a full workload. Rivera is leav
Dec 24, 2021
Back from COVID list
Allen (illness) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday.
ANALYSIS
Taylor Heinicke was reinstated Thursday, and Washington now has its top two quarterbacks back on the active roster after missing one game due to COVID-19. Allen should reclaim backup duties while Garrett Gilbert drops to the No. 3 option.
Dec 21, 2021
Not cleared to start Week 15
Allen (illness) wasn't activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list and won't be available for Tuesday's game against the Eagles, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Neither Allen nor top signal-caller Taylor Heinicke (illness) was able to clear the NFL's COVID-19 protocols after both tested positive for the virus less than a week ago, so for at least one game, Washington will turn the offense over to Garrett Gilbert, who was signed off the Patriots' practice squad Friday. The Football Team will hope to get one of Gilbert or Heinicke back in advance of its Week 16 game against the Cowboys on Sunday.
Dec 17, 2021
Washington-Eagles moved to Tuesday
Allen (illness) and Washington will no longer play the Eagles on Sunday, after the NFL officially rescheduled the matchup between the two teams for Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.
ANALYSIS
Due to ongoing COVID-19-related concerns within Washington's organization, the NFL is hopeful that by delaying the game two days, the Football Team will restore enough players from the reserve/COVID-19 list to alleviate depth concerns on the roster. Even with the delay, top quarterback Taylor Heinicke (illness), who was placed on the list Friday after testing positive for the virus, will face an uphill battle to clear the necessary protocols ahead of Tuesday's game. Allen, meanwhile, should stand a better chance of being ready for Tuesday, after he was placed on the list Wednesday following his positive COVID-19 test. However, if neither Allen nor Heinicke are available to play, Washington will likely turn to the newly signed Garrett Gilbert or one of its two quarterbacks on the practice squad (Kyle Shurmur and Jordan Ta'amu) to make the Week 15 start.
Dec 15, 2021
Feels well after positive test
Allen told teammate Taylor Heinicke that his placement on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday was the result of a positive test, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports. "He said he's fine, so that's positive," Heinicke said of Allen.
ANALYSIS
Even if he remains asymptomatic, Allen will still need to turn in two consecutive negative COVID-19 tests at least 24 hours apart in order to make himself eligible to play Sunday against the Eagles. If Washington gets the sense that Allen won't be on track to clear the protocols before Saturday, Kyle Shurmur or Jordan Ta'amu would likely be elevated from the practice squad to serve as Heinicke's backup for the Week 15 game.
Dec 15, 2021
Placed on COVID-19 list
Allen was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Washington's backup QB all season, Allen is of extra interest this week after starter Taylor Heinicke injured his knee during Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Cowboys. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Monday that Heinicke and the team were optimistic about the QB's availability for Week 15 against the Eagles, but it's possible Washington has to turn to practice-squad QB Kyle Shurmur if both Allen and Heinicke are unavailable this Sunday. As of Wednesday morning, Allen was one of 12 Washington players on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Dec 12, 2021
Replaces injured starter
Allen completed four of nine passes for 53 yards against Dallas on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Allen stepped in after starter Taylor Heinicke left the game with a knee injury in the fourth quarter. Allen lacks Heinicke's athleticism and big-play ability in general, so Allen would likely be a downgrade from Heinicke in both real life and fantasy football, but Allen is the next man up if Heinicke can't play against Philadelphia in Week 15.
Sep 13, 2021
Slated to serve as primary backup
Allen (coach's decision) will serve as the No. 2 quarterback in Thursday's Week 2 matchup against the Giants, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old was a healthy scratch in Sunday's season opener, but he'll step in as the primary backup behind Taylor Heinicke since Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip) is expected to be ruled out for Thursday's game. Allen appeared in four games for Washington last year and completed 60 of 87 passes for 610 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.
Aug 28, 2021
Struggled against Ravens
Allen completed 10 of 22 passes for 100 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
The Ravens played a bunch of starters, while Washington had a long list of players they held out, including some key backups. Still, Allen struggled, leading Washington to just three points while playing the first six drives of the game. He's the third quarterback behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke, with his roster fate depending on how many signal-callers the team decides to keep. Saturday's performance won't help if it was a tough decision beforehand, but the team may also be patient with Allen given that he suffered a severe ankle injury last year. Either way, Heinicke is next in line for starts if Fitzpatrick gets injured or benched.
Aug 28, 2021
Starting Saturday night
Allen will start Saturday's preseason game against Baltimore, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
With Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke held out, Kyle Allen and Steven Montez will split the QB reps. Washington will open the game with a crew of second- and third-stringers, releasing a starting lineup with RB Peyton Barber, WRs Antonio Gandy-Golden, Dax Milne and DeAndre Carter and TE John Bates. In any case. Allen should be the No. 3 quarterback if Washington keeps one.
Aug 18, 2021
Says he'll play this week
Allen (ankle) said he'll play in Friday's preseason game against Cincinnati, Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was held out of the first preseason game after aggravating his surgically repaired ankle during the first week of training camp. Coach Ron Rivera said Allen might eventually be a candidate to start, but the 25-year-old looks to be Washington's No. 3 quarterback at the moment, behind both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke. It's unclear how Rivera will divide time between his QBs in Friday's exhibition.
Aug 15, 2021
Back at practice
Allen (ankle) participated at Sunday's practice, Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen suffered an ankle injury early in camp and has since been sidelined, but he's back at practice Sunday after missing the past couple weeks. The 25-year-old appears slated to work as Washington's No. 3 quarterback since Taylor Heinicke is in competition with Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting job.
Aug 6, 2021
Return to field imminent
Coach Ron Rivera said Friday that expects Allen (ankle) to return to the practice field soon, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Washington held Friday's session at FedExField, during which Allen was seen throwing passes with fellow reserve quarterback Steven Montez. Allen sustained a season-ending dislocation of his left ankle in November that required a procedure. He tweaked the surgically repaired ankle last Saturday and has been sidelined in the meantime. The Football Team is holding a "QB competition" between graybeard Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke for the starting job, leaving Allen and Montez to vie for depth chart slotting, assuming Rivera decides to roster three signal-callers in the regular season.

Sits out to start week
Allen is watching practice Monday after tweaking his surgically repaired ankle Saturday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was cleared to practice at the beginning of training camp, but coach Ron Rivera suggested the QB wasn't back at full strength, and a setback early in camp reinforces that notion. Realistically, Allen will hope to compete for the backup job with Taylor Heinicke, who is said to be competing with Ryan Fizpatrick for the starting job. As things stand, Allen appears on track for the No. 3 job, assuming Washington even keeps three signal-callers.

Hurts ankle in practice
Allen injured his ankle in practice Saturday, Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear yet how severe the injury is and whether it has any relation to the broken ankle Allen suffered last October and had surgically repaired. Allen's currently third on Washington's depth chart behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke, and he can ill afford to miss much time if he wants to surpass at least one of those alternatives. He'll try to heal up in time to participate in Washington's Aug. 12 preseason opener.
Jul 30, 2021
Not competing with Fitzpatrick yet
Allen isn't part of Washington's quarterback competition at the moment, but he could enter the fray once he proves his surgically repaired ankle is back at full strength, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Ron Rivera is calling it an open competition for the starting job between Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke, though it'll be a major surprise if the latter actually ends up starting Week 1. Allen starting would be an even bigger surprise -- realistically, he's more likely to lose his roster spot than win the starting job. In any case, the 25-year-old quarterback has at least made it back on the field for the start of training camp, after missing out on offseason practices. Allen most likely will end up battling Heinicke for the backup job or Steven Montez for the No. 3 spot.

Hoping to be full-go by training camp
Allen (ankle) is still not 100 percent from a broken ankle suffered last October, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen said that he has been happy with how his rehab has gone to this point, but there are still other hurdles for him to get over. The goal is for him to be able to be a full-go by the time training camp starts up. Allen played solidly at times last season, but will likely be third on the depth chart heading into the 2021 campaign behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke.

Signs tender with Washington
Allen (ankle) signed his exclusive rights free agent tender with Washington on Thursday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The club extended the tender to Allen on Mar. 10, and the signal-caller's 2021 commitment to Washington becomes official with Thursday's transaction. Newly signed free agent addition Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to head up Washington's quarterback room this fall, while Allen ranks third in the pecking order behind Taylor Heinicke (shoulder).
Mar 10, 2021
Given ERFA tender
Washington extended Allen (ankle) an exclusive rights free agent tender Wednesday, NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen started four games for the Football Team last season before suffering a dislocated ankle, an injury which he's expected to fully recover from by April. With Alex Smith having been released, it's possible that Allen and Taylor Heinicke (shoulder) enter Washington's offseason program -- if it happens -- as the top quarterbacks on the depth chart. Of course, the team could also add more competition in free agency or April's draft.
Feb 11, 2021
On track in rehab
Allen (ankle) should be healthy by April, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen dislocated and fractured his ankle in Week 9, requiring season-ending surgery. He made four starts (but played only two full games) prior to the injury, completing 69.0 percent of his passes for 7.0 YPA, with four TDs, one interception and one lost fumble. Allen isn't scheduled for free agency until 2022, but his future in Washington appears uncertain, as the team recently signed backup Taylor Heinicke (shoulder) to a two-year extension and now figures to pursue upgrades for the starting spot. It isn't clear how Allen and Alex Smith (calf) fit into Washington's picture for 2021, but both should at least be healthy if they're still around come training camp.

Shifts to IR
Washington placed Allen (ankle) on injured reserve Monday.
ANALYSIS
Allen sustained a season-ending dislocated/fractured left ankle Week 9, so his placement on IR was all but guaranteed. The 24-year-old signal-caller will require surgery to repair damage to his ankle, and he's reportedly facing roughly a four month recovery timeframe. For the time being, Alex Smith will command Washington's offence under center while Dwayne Haskins works as his top backup.
Nov 9, 2020
Officially out for season
Allen will undergo surgery to repair his dislocated/fractured left ankle and won't return this season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen's injury isn't as bad as it was initially feared, but he'll need surgery to repair the dislocation, which is expected to require a four-month recovery. Alex Smith will start under center in Week 10 against the Lions, while 2019 first-rounder Dwayne Haskins serves as a backup for the time being. Allen's final stat line for the season reads 610 passing yards, four touchdowns and an interception, adding 26 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The 24-year-old quarterback is expected to make a full recovery for the 2021 season, and he'll be an exclusive-rights free agent in March.
Nov 9, 2020
Likely needs surgery
Allen (ankle) is expected to have surgery and could miss the rest of the season, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The fracture in Allen's left ankle reportedly isn't too severe, but it sounds like the dislocation will require surgery, something he'd initially hoped to avoid. With the 24-year-old likely out for the rest of the season, Alex Smith will take over as the starting quarterback for Week 10 at Detroit. There's also a decent chance Dwayne Haskins gets another shot to play at some point this year.
Nov 8, 2020
May avoid surgery
Allen is slated for an MRI on his dislocated left ankle, but the fracture that accompanies it is "just a small bone chip" and may not force him to undergo surgery, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
There doesn't seem to much question that Allen will miss time, but the aforementioned testing will determine how long he'll be sidelined. In his absence, Washington likely will turn the offense over to Alex Smith, with Dwayne Haskins serving as the team's primary backup.
Nov 8, 2020
Suffers apparent ankle dislocation
The initial diagnosis is that Allen suffered a dislocated ankle Sunday against the Giants, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Pelissero, the QB's injury includes a small fracture. Assuming that diagnosis is confirmed, Allen will be in line to miss time. In that case, Washington's options to replace him in the coming weeks will be Alex Smith -- who took over for Allen on Sunday -- and Dwayne Haskins.
Nov 8, 2020
Knocked from Sunday's game
Allen won't return to Sunday's game against the Giants due to a left ankle injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen was rolled up on when he was sacked by Jabrill Peppers late in the first quarter, with the latter incurring an unnecessary roughness penalty on the play. The severity of the injury isn't yet known, but Allen will finish the day 5-for-7 passing for 62 yards. Alex Smith has entered in Allen's stead and will have to finish the contest because second-year QB Dwayne Haskins was a healthy scratch.
Oct 25, 2020
Throws two TD passes
Allen completed 15 of 25 pass attempts for 194 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 25-3 win over the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Allen managed a season-best 7.8 yards per attempt while completing a 52-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin and adding a 15-yard strike to Logan Thomas in the second quarter. He wasn't especially productive the rest of the way but didn't need to do much as the Dallas offense struggled both before and after Andy Dalton (concussion) left the game. Allen now has a 4:1 TD:INT to go along with 474 passing yards over the last two games and will look to continue his respectably play next Sunday in another divisional matchup against the Giants.
Oct 18, 2020
Nearly leads comeback
Allen (arm) completed 31 of 42 passes for 280 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the Washington Football Team's 20-19 loss to the Giants on Sunday. He also rushed twice for eight yards and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
With his team down 10-0 after one quarter, Allen went to work, helping close the gap to 13-10 by halftime with a pair of 70-yard scoring drives, the latter which he closed with a pretty touch pass to Logan Thomas in the back left corner of the end zone. Allen would then spearhead a third 70-yard march that straddled the closing minute of the third quarter and the first 6:04 of the final period, one that culminated in a game-tying field goal. Allen saved his best for last, capping a 75-yard drive with another nifty scoring toss in the left corner of the opposite end zone to Cam Sims with 36 seconds left, but he wasn't able to connect with Terry McLaurin on the subsequent two-point conversion pass attempt, short-circuiting the comeback. Despite the narrow loss, Allen certainly acquitted himself well from both a real-world and fantasy perspective, leaving him poised to remain in the starting role for a Week 7 divisional battle versus the Cowboys.
Oct 14, 2020
Logs full practice
Allen (arm) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen received medical clearance and proceeded to practice without limitation. His first start of the year was cut short after he took a hard hit to the arm, but he should be back in the lineup for Week 6 against the Giants. Coach Ron Rivera confirmed after Sunday's loss that he still views Allen as the starter, ahead of both Alex Smith and Dwayne Haskins (illness). Of course, Allen is probably just one or two bad games away from losing the job.
Oct 14, 2020
Medically cleared to practice
Allen (arm) has received full medical clearance and is slated to participate in Washington's first Week 6 practice Wednesday, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
After supplanting Dwayne Haskins as Washington's starting quarterback heading into a Week 5 matchup with the Rams, Allen had his season debut cut short when he took a big hit to his arm from a Los Angeles defender in the second quarter. Before departing, Allen moved the offense effectively, completing nine of 13 attempts for 74 yards while rushing for a seven-yard touchdown on his lone carry. Coach Ron Rivera confirmed after the game that -- if healthy -- Allen would retain the starting job over Alex Smith and Haskins, so the fact that the 24-year-old is taking part in the team's first practice of the week bodes well for his chances of being ready to go for Sunday's game against the Giants. Later Wednesday, Washington will release its first Week 6 injury report, which will reveal whether Allen was a limited or full participant in practice.
Oct 12, 2020
Should be good for Week 6
Allen (arm) is expected to be healthy enough to start against the Giants in Week 6, barring any setbacks, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Ron Rivera has confirmed on multiple occasions that Allen will start Week 6 as long as he's healthy, and it looks as though the third-year quarterback's arm injury isn't severe enough to seriously jeopardize his availability. He was forced out of Sunday's loss to the Rams due to a hit to his non-throwing arm. Washington also has Alex Smith, who relieved Allen versus Los Angeles, on hand as a capable backup, in addition to 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins.
Oct 11, 2020
Retaining starting job
Coach Ron Rivera confirmed Allen, who exited Sunday's loss to the Rams with an arm injury, will retain the starting job if he's ready to play in Week 6 against the Giants, Mike Jones of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Rivera added that he held the quarterback out the rest of the game Sunday because Allen's arm was sore and the coach wanted to be cautious. The third-year signal-caller completed nine of 13 passes for 74 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions before exiting the contest, and he was replaced by Alex Smith, who was seeing his first action since the 2018 season due to a gruesome leg injury.
Oct 11, 2020
Suffers arm injury
Allen (arm) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Rams, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Allen took a big hit from an L.A. defender near the sideline and was examined in the sideline tent before going to the locker room. There's a chance Allen reenters the contest, but Alex Smith has taken over the offense in his stead. Note Washington's previous starter Dwayne Haskins isn't at the stadium Sunday due to an illness, so tight end Logan Thomas, a quarterback in college, may be the emergency option in the event another change at QB is needed.
Oct 8, 2020
To be evaluated by the game
Coach Ron Rivera said Allen, who will be Washington's starting quarterback Sunday against the Rams, will be evaluated on a game-by-game basis, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite losing the past three games, Washington finds itself behind just the Eagles (1-2-1) and tied with the Cowboys (1-3) in the NFC East. Allen himself served as the backup to Dwayne Haskins through the quarter mark of the season, but the latter's play seems to have been at the forefront of Rivera's decision. Even after posting season bests in completion percentage (71) and yards (314) this past Sunday against the Ravens, Haskins was sitting at 61 percent, 234.8 yards per game and four touchdowns versus three interceptions. Meanwhile, Allen, who followed Rivera and offensive coordinator Scott Turner from Carolina to DC, has experience in the system. In 12 starts last year for the Panthers, Allen completed 62 percent of his passes, averaged 252.3 yards per game and had 17 TDs versus 15 picks.
Oct 7, 2020
Receiving Week 5 start
Washington plans to announce Allen as its new starting quarterback ahead of Sunday's game against the Rams, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
After serving as the Football Team's No. 2 quarterback for the first quarter of the season, Allen will climb to the top spot on the depth chart after Dwayne Haskins (61.0 percent completion rate, 6.4 yards per attempt, 4:3 TD:INT) generally struggled to move the offense through Washington's first four games. Allen's existing familiarity with first-year head coach Ron Rivera from their time together in Carolina the past two seasons may have accelerated the change at quarterback, but the 24-year-old proved turnover-prone while seeing extended action for the Panthers in 2019, throwing 16 interceptions and fumbling 13 times (losing seven) in 13 games. Allen will need to clean up the mistakes with Washington if he hopes to maintain his starting role and hold off veteran Alex Smith, who will elevate to the backup role Week 5 while Haskins falls to third on the depth chart, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Sep 8, 2020
Begins year as No. 2 QB
Washington lists Allen as its No. 2 quarterback heading into Sunday's season opener against the Eagles, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Alex Smith will be included on the 53-man roster, head coach Ron Rivera acknowledged the veteran signal-caller still needs some time to shake off the rust while he returns from the career-threatening leg injury he suffered in November 2018. As a result, Allen will begin his first campaign in Washington as the top backup to Dwayne Haskins, who emerged as the team's starting quarterback coming out of training camp.
Jul 27, 2020
Benefitting from odd schedule?
A limited offseason program combined with the cancellation of the preseason could work in Allen's favor if the Washington quarterback job is truly up for grabs, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
New coach Ron Rivera has hinted at Haskins being the starter but hasn't outright committed to it. Allen and offensive coordinator Scott Turner worked together in Carolina last season, while Haskins is in the difficult position of learning a new offense on a shortened schedule. The 2019 first-round pick should still be viewed as the favorite to start Week 1, but the possibility of Allen making it a camp battle can't be ruled out. Haskins and Allen were arguably the two worst starting QBs in the NFL last year, though Mason Rudolph and Mitchell Trubisky gave them a run for their money.
Mar 23, 2020
Traded to Washington
The Panthers are trading Allen to Washington, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Panthers reached an agreement with P.J. Walker earlier Monday, adding another body to a crowded QB room. Allen will now be reunited with Washington head coach Ron Rivera, who held the same role in Carolina from 2011 to mid-2019. With Dwayne Haskins unproven and Alex Smith (leg) uncertain to play football again, Allen is pretty much in the best situation he could've hoped for, though it doesn't mean he'll be handed a roster spot. The 24-year-old was one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL last season, accounting for 46 sacks, 16 interceptions and 13 fumbles in 13 games. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports the Panthers will receive a fifth-round draft pick in the trade.
Mar 10, 2020
Signs one-year contract
Allen signed a one-year extension with the Panthers on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Allen initially had some success in 2019 when he took over the starting quarterback job, but he ultimately accounted for 46 sacks, 16 interceptions and 13 fumbles in 13 games, struggling to handle pressure or complete deep passes. The 24-year-old figures to compete with Will Grier (foot) for a backup job in 2020, though it isn't 100 percent clear if Cam Newton (foot) or someone else will be the starter.
Sep 17, 2019
Preparing for potential start
Allen and Will Grier both took snaps with the first-team offense at Tuesday's practice while starter Cam Newton was limited to rehab work after aggravating a left foot injury in the Week 2 loss to the Buccaneers, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Newton has been bothered by the foot issue since the third week of the preseason and hasn't been in top form through the first two weeks of the regular season, as evidenced in particular by his lack of involvement in the run game (five attempts for minus-2 yards). General manager Marty Hurney labeled Newton as day-to-day and was unwilling to speculate on his availability for Sunday's matchup with the Cardinals, potentially leaving Allen or Grier in line for the starting assignment. Considering Allen broke camp as the No. 2 quarterback, he would be the odds-on favorite to start if Newton is sidelined. If Allen does in fact get the nod Sunday, the Panthers would likely ask him to play the part of game manager and opt for a ground-heavy attack if the game flow allows for it.
