Mac Jones Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the 49ers vs Browns game on Sunday with our National Football League injury report.Nov 14, 2025
Drops back to backup role
Jones will return to a backup role with teammate Brock Purdy (toe) cleared to start Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Jones won five of eight starts, completing 69.6 percent of passes for 7.4 YPA, with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. He didn't offer much on the ground -- 64 yards, no TDs -- and was thus merely adequate for fantasy, but his steady hand helped RB Christian McCaffrey put up points in bunches. Jones is signed through 2026, which means the 49ers may field trade calls this offseason from QB-needy teams.
Nov 9, 2025
Strong fantasy performance Sunday
Jones completed 33 of 39 pass attempts for 319 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while gaining three yards on one rush attempt in Sunday's 42-26 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Jones made another start under center for the injured Brock Purdy (toe), and the results were positive from a fantasy perspective. It was Jones' third spot-start in which he threw for more than 300 yards, and the second in which he recorded three touchdown passes. After the loss, head coach Kyle Shanahan hinted that Purdy could be ready to return in Week 11, which would put an end to Jones' run as a startable option in fantasy. Managers should hold until an official announcement is made ahead of next Sunday's tilt against the Cardinals, as Jones has been exceeding expectations as the 49ers' starter.
Nov 7, 2025
Making another start
Jones will start Sunday's game against the Rams even if Brock Purdy (toe) is active, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Purdy, listed as questionable, will merely be a backup if active. Jones has done a nice job of guiding San Francisco's offense, but he doesn't offer much in the way of rushing stats and is looking at a tough matchup with the Rams defense this Sunday.
Nov 2, 2025
Accurate start in Week 9 win
Jones completed 19 of 24 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 34-24 win over the Giants. He added four rushing attempts for four yards.
ANALYSIS
Jones connected on all 14 of his first-half pass attempts for 143 yards, including touchdown passes of five yards to Christian McCaffrey and 11 yards to Jauan Jennings, but the quarterback lost a fumble in the final minute before halftime for the lone blemish of an otherwise spotless half. His first pass of the second half landed incomplete as Jones' accuracy diminished significantly, but the 49ers maintained a double-digit lead the entire second half to improve to 6-3, including 5-2 in games started by Jones. Brock Purdy (toe) has been inching closer to returning, so Jones' run as the starter could come to a close in Week 10 against the Rams.
Oct 31, 2025
Getting another start
Jones will start Sunday's game at the Giants, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Brock Purdy (toe) is listed as questionable, but he'll only be the backup if he's declared active, per 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. Active or not, Purdy seems to be making progress and could return to the starting job as soon as Week 10 against the Rams.
Oct 29, 2025
Full practice Wednesday
Jones (knee/knee) practiced in full Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Jones sustained a knee contusion this past Sunday at Houston, per David Lombardi of SFStandard.com. Jones then was listed with both knees to begin Week 9 prep, but neither issue impacted his practice reps Wednesday. Meanwhile, No. 1 QB Brock Purdy remained limited due to his lingering turf toe injury, which came on the heels of Shanahan telling Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com on Monday that he didn't "think it's a long shot" for Purdy to play Sunday at the Giants. Purdy likely will need to log a full practice Thursday or Friday in order to be cleared for game action, so the 49ers' next two injury reports will be of keen interest to get a sense of who between Purdy and Jones will be under center this weekend.
Oct 27, 2025
'Day-to-day' due to knee contusion
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Jones suffered a bruised knee during Sunday's 26-15 loss at Houston and is "day-to-day," David Lombardi of SFStandard.com reports.
ANALYSIS
At the same time, Shanahan relayed to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com that he doesn't "think it's a long shot" for No. 1 QB Brock Purdy (toe) to return to action this coming Sunday at the Giants. As such, the signal-caller situation in San Francisco will be watched closely as the week goes on to get a sense of who between Jones and Purdy will be under center Week 9. In Week 8, Jones fell shy of 200 yards passing (193, to be exact) for a second straight game, but he tossed two touchdowns versus one interception and rushed twice for 23 yards.
Oct 26, 2025
Struggles against Texans defense
Jones completed 19 of 32 passes for 193 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while adding two rushes for 23 yards in the 49ers' 26-15 loss to the Texans on Sunday. He also threw a two-point conversion pass.
ANALYSIS
Jones drew a fourth consecutive start for Brock Purdy (toe), but the stage of diminishing returns may be starting to manifest. The 2021 first-round pick struggled to help the offense achieve any kind of continuity for long stretches, and the 49ers were ultimately shut out in both the first and fourth quarters. Jones connected with tight ends George Kittle (17 yards) and Jake Tonges (two yards) for his pair of touchdowns, yet his interception at the Texans' one-yard line just before the two-minute warning essentially sealed San Francisco's loss. Purdy is reportedly getting close to a return after putting in six limited practice sessions over the last two weeks, but it remains to be seen who'll be under center in a favorable Week 9 road matchup against the Giants.
Oct 24, 2025
Getting another start for Purdy
Jones will start Sunday's game at Houston after coach Kyle Shanahan ruled out Brock Purdy (toe), Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones thus will earn a sixth start in the past seven contests in place of Purdy, who continues to deal with a turf toe injury. Working as a fill-in for Purdy, Jones has averaged 280.8 yards per game on 67.0 percent passing while tossing six touchdowns versus four interceptions. Jones also will have all of RB Christian McCaffrey, WRs Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne and TE George Kittle as his primary targets Week 8.
Oct 24, 2025
Expected to make another start
With Brock Purdy (toe) unlikely to be ready to play Sunday against the Texans, Jones is expected to make another start at quarterback, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones has been starting since Week 2 and appears to be ready to make a sixth consecutive start, as Purdy continues to deal with his turf toe issue. Across his five starts, Jones has completed 67 percent of his passes at 6.9 yards per attempt with six touchdowns and four interceptions. He's done enough to help manage the 49ers to four wins across those five games, but Jones carries minimal fantasy value outside of two-quarterback formats.
Oct 19, 2025
Gritty performance in win
Jones (knee/oblique) completed 17 of 26 pass attempts for 152 yards and an interception while recording five rush attempts for 11 yards in Sunday's 20-10 win over the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Jones was asked to play the role of game manager Sunday, and he did just that, keeping drives alive for Christian McCaffrey to feast on Atlanta's defense for 200-plus yard and two touchdowns. The veteran backup threw an interception for the second week in a row, failing to record a touchdown in just as many games. Jones has been a godsend for the 5-2 49ers, but the luster has worn off from a fantasy perspective following a hot start filling in for Brock Purdy (toe). The latter resumed practicing this week, so it wouldn't be shocking to see Jones resume his backup role against the Texans next Sunday.
Oct 17, 2025
Another spot start on tap
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Jones (knee/oblique) will start Sunday's game against the Falcons with Brock Purdy (toe) ruled out, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Purdy got back on the practice field this week as a limited participant, but his lingering turf toe injury will sideline him for a fifth time in the last six contests. The announcement lines Jones up for his fifth start of the campaign, after completing 113 of 168 passes (67.3 percent) for 1,252 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions in his first four nods. He'll have a tough task on his hands Sunday, though, as Atlanta's pass defense is the stingiest in the NFL to date (139.4 yards allowed per game).
Oct 16, 2025
Logs full practice Thursday
Jones (knee/oblique) practiced in full Thursday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones followed up Wednesday's limited showing due to lingering knee and oblique injuries with all on-field work one day later. The same can't be said for No. 1 QB Brock Purdy, who remained limited due to his nagging turf toe issue. Purdy has missed four of the past five games as a result of the health concern, but his ability to handle some practice reps on back-to-back days implies that he's inching toward a return to action. Coach Kyle Shanahan may settle who will be the 49ers' starting quarterback for Week 7 when he speaks to the media Friday.
Oct 15, 2025
Limited Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Jones (knee/oblique) will be limited at practice Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones will be joined on the practice field by No. 1 QB Brock Purdy (toe), though the latter will be more limited than the former, as Shanahan told Matt Barrows of The Athletic. It's unknown if that means Jones has better odds than Purdy to continue leading the 49ers offense Week 7, but Purdy at least has put himself in a position to see his first game action since Week 4. In four starts in place of Purdy this season, Jones has completed 113 of 168 passes (67.3 percent) for 1,252 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions, rushed 16 times for 23 yards and fumbled three times (one lost).
Oct 12, 2025
Throws two picks in losing effort
Jones (knee/oblique) completed 27 of 39 pass attempts for 347 yards and two interceptions while rushing five times for 13 yards in Sunday's 30-19 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Jones toughed out a pair of injuries and another week of limited practices in order to start for a shorthanded 49ers squad Sunday. The veteran backup was unable to earn his fourth win in as many appearances with San Francisco, but he did produce a season-high 347 passing yards for fantasy managers. The Alabama product is averaging a whopping 313.0 yards per game with a 2:1 TD:INT ratio in place of starter Brock Purdy (toe/shoulder) this season. The latter's status is currently unclear for Week 7, but Jones has certainly played well enough in Purdy's stead to warrant fantasy consideration if he remains under center against the Falcons for Sunday Night Football.
Oct 12, 2025
Active, starting again Sunday
Jones (knee/oblique) is active for Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, Briana Jeannel of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
During a week in which Jones practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday through Friday due to the oblique injury that he suffered Week 5 and a lingering PCL sprain, he didn't attempt many passes until Friday, at which point the 49ers deemed him questionable for Week 6 action. With No. 1 QB Brock Purdy (toe) out yet again, Jones will earn his fourth start of the season after completing 86 of 129 passes (66.7 percent) for 905 yards, six touchdowns and one interception in his first three opportunities to lead the 49ers offense. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported overnight Saturday that Purdy has "a chance" to return next Sunday night against the Falcons, so Jones' time as San Francisco's starting QB may come to a close after this Sunday's contest.
Oct 12, 2025
Still looking likely to play Sunday
Jones (oblique/knee), who is officially questionable to suit up Sunday against the Buccaneers, is expected to play and start, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Jones has been nursing injuries to both his knee and oblique, the expectation for most of the week has been that he'll be able to take the field Sunday. That still appears to be the case, and if he does indeed play, Jones is slated to make his third start of the campaign with Brock Purdy (toe) ruled out. Schefter notes that Purdy has a chance to return in Week 7 against Atlanta, so Jones could return to a backup role following this week's contest regardless of how he performs.
Oct 10, 2025
Expected to start
Jones (knee) is expected to start Sunday's game at Tampa Bay, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones is officially listed as questionable after being a limited practice participant all week. He was already playing through a PCL injury and is now set to play through an oblique injury as well, while fellow 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (toe) has been ruled out for at least one more game.
Oct 10, 2025
Listed as questionable
Jones (knee/oblique) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
With Brock Purdy (toe) ruled out again, Jones seemingly is gearing up to play through a pair of injuries. He's been fighting through a PCL sprain for a few weeks now, and he added the oblique injury during last Thursday's win over the Rams. Jones was a limited practice participant throughout this week, with reports suggesting he did far more throwing Friday after doing very little in the previous two practices. Fantasy managers will want to keep an eye on the situation ahead of Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff, with both Jones and WR Jauan Jennings (ankle) listed as questionable.
Oct 10, 2025
Doing more at practice Friday
Jones (knee/oblique) is practicing Friday and doing more throwing than the day before, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
It looks like Jones is preparing to start, while Brock Purdy is doing side work but not quite ready to practice. The 49ers may still leave the door open for Purdy to start if he makes progress this weekend, but the more likely scenario right now is Jones fighting through oblique and knee injuries to make another start this Sunday at Tampa Bay.
Oct 9, 2025
Remains limited Thursday
Jones (knee/oblique) officially was limited at Thursday's practice, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones emerged from his third start of the season in place of QB Brock Purdy (toe) last Thursday at the Rams with an oblique injury in addition to the existing PCL sprain. On Thursday in particular, Jones didn't attempt many throws in the portion of the session open to the media, per David Lombardi of SFStandard.com. While Purdy appears to be trending toward another absence Sunday at Tampa Bay, Jones himself needs to be monitored as the weekend approaches to ensure he's lined up to be under center yet again.
Oct 9, 2025
Practicing Thursday
Jones (knee) was in uniform for Thursday's practice but didn't attempt many throws, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers appear to be taking it easy on Jones in the likely scenario that No. 1 QB Brock Purdy (toe) isn't able to play Sunday at Tampa Bay. Notably, Adrian Martinez was the only quarterback to throw during route-running work Thursday, per David Lombardi of SFStandard.com, so Jones seems destined to log a second consecutive limited session. Friday's practice report will be key to determining who will be under center for San Francisco this weekend.
Oct 8, 2025
Limited Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Jones (knee) will be limited in practice Wednesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones endured a number of big hits and also dealt with dehydration during last Thursday's 26-23 overtime road win against the Rams, but he didn't miss any of the 49ers' 86 offensive snaps and completed 33 of 49 passes for 342 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Brock Purdy's lingering turf toe injury has afforded Jones three starts through five games this season, and Purdy remains sidelined at practice as of Wednesday. If Purdy requires more time to recover, Jones appears set to continue leading San Francisco's offense Sunday in Tampa Bay.
Oct 3, 2025
Gusty effort in Week 5 OT win
Jones completed 33 of 49 passes for 342 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions while adding four rushes for five yards in the 49ers' 26-23 overtime win over the Rams on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Prior to Thursday's game, Brock Purdy was announced as week-to-week for the foreseeable future due to his troublesome toe, but on a couple of occasions in the marathon win, it appeared the 49ers could lose Jones as well. Already managing a PCL injury coming in, Jones took two particularly hard shots on sacks in the second half and overtime, including one late in the third quarter where he remained on the ground for some time clutching his leg in pain. Nevertheless, Jones didn't miss any plays and put together another highly impressive performance, one that featured his highest passing yardage total of the season and pushed him to a 6:1 TD:INT on the season. Purdy hit Jake Tonges (six yards) and Christian McCaffrey (one yard) for his two first-half scoring tosses, and he also spearheaded an eight-play drive in overtime to set up Eddy Piniero's tie-breaking (and eventual game-winning) field goal, and the veteran signal-caller will now have a few extra days to heal up for a Week 6 road matchup against the Buccan
Oct 1, 2025
Another spot start on tap
Jones (knee) will start Thursday at the Rams after Brock Purdy (toe) was ruled out for that contest, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Purdy returned from a two-game absence this past Sunday versus the Jaguars but came out of the outing with toe soreness, which didn't allow him to practice this week. Meanwhile, Jones is past the PCL sprain that he dealt with last week following three straight full listings this week. With Purdy sidelined for the third time this season, Jones will retake the reins of the 49ers offense, but the skill positions also will be without WRs Jauan Jennings (ankle/rib) and Ricky Pearsall (knee), meaning RB Christian McCaffrey, WRs Kendrick Bourne, Demarcus Robinson and Skyy Moore and TE Jake Tonges will be the top available options in the passing game.
Sep 30, 2025
Full participant at walkthrough
Jones (knee) was listed as a full participant at the 49ers' walkthrough Tuesday, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones appears to have moved past the PCL sprain that he suffered in Week 3 versus Arizona, and he looks to be all set to play in Thursday night's contest versus the Rams. General manager John Lynch stated earlier in the week that the team will take "every precaution" to make sure that starting quarterback Brock Purdy (toe) is all right, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic. Purdy was considered a non-participant at Tuesday's walkthrough, and if he can't go in Week 5, Jones would stand to garner his third start of the season.
Sep 29, 2025
Listed as full Monday
Jones (knee) was listed as full on Monday's practice estimate.
ANALYSIS
Jones was limited all of last week due to a PCL sprain that he suffered Week 3 against the Cardinals, but he was able to handle backup duties Sunday versus the Jaguars with Brock Purdy (left shoulder/toe) back in action. Purdy emerged from the latter contest with toe soreness and was listed as a DNP on Monday, with coach Kyle Shanahan telling David Lombardi of SFStandard.com that Purdy will be evaluated. Considering Jones now has a clean bill of health and Purdy doesn't as the 49ers prepare for Thursday's contest at the Rams, Jones may be called upon to start again Week 5 as he did Weeks 2 and 3 if Purdy isn't cleared for game action.
Sep 28, 2025
Suiting up Sunday, but as backup QB
Jones (knee) is active for Sunday's contest against the Jaguars, Briana Jeannel of the 49ers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones emerged from his second consecutive start in place of Brock Purdy (left shoulder/toe) last Sunday against the Cardinals with a sprained PCL in his left knee. The issue limited Jones' practice reps this week, and he entered the weekend listed as questionable, while coach Kyle Shanahan announced Purdy as the 49ers' starting QB on Friday. When the team didn't elevate practice-squad member Adrian Martinez on Saturday, it signaled that Jones was in line to serve as Purdy's backup, which now has been confirmed.
Sep 26, 2025
Status in question for Week 4
Jones (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest versus the Jaguars, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones emerged from a second consecutive start in place of Brock Purdy (left shoulder/toe) this past Sunday against the Cardinals with a sprained PCL in his left knee. It limited Jones in practice Wednesday and Thursday, and his status now is up in the air ahead of Week 4 action. Coach Kyle Shanahan already told Wagoner that Purdy will start this weekend, so Jones will be the No. 2 QB, assuming he's active.
Sep 25, 2025
Stays limited Thursday
Jones (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
On the heels of his second start in place of Brock Purdy (left shoulder/toe) this past Sunday against the Cardinals, Jones revealed that he aggravated an existing PCL sprain in his left knee, which so far has capped his practice reps this week. Purdy himself also was limited Wednesday and Thursday, potentially setting up Friday's session to be key as coach Kyle Shanahan hones in on who will be under center Week 4 versus the Jaguars. In the aforementioned starts, Jones completed 53 of 80 passes for 563 yards, four touchdowns and one interception, rushed seven times for five yards and fumbled twice (one lost).
Sep 24, 2025
Limited Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Jones (knee) will be a limited practice participant Wednesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Jones and No. 1 QB Brock Purdy will operate with a cap on their reps to begin Week 4 prep, and the duo along with practice-squad member Adrian Martinez will handle first-team reps. Jones himself has started the last two games in place of Purdy, completing 53 of 80 passes (66 percent) for 563 yards, four touchdowns and one interception, turning seven carries into five yards and fumbling twice (one lost). If Purdy needs another week to get to 100 percent, Jones likely would get the start Sunday versus the Jaguars, but a PCL sprain in his left knee may be throwing a wrench into those plans.
Sep 22, 2025
Deemed 'day-to-day' by coach
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Jones is day-to-day after aggravating a PCL sprain in his left knee during Sunday's 18-16 win against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones got another spot start for Brock Purdy (left shoulder/toe) in Week 3, completing 27 of 41 passes for 284 yards, one touchdown and one interception and losing one yard on his only carry. Late in the contest, though, Jones was visibly hobbled, and he told reporters afterward about the lingering knee issue, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Meanwhile, Shanahan also relayed to Wagoner on Monday that Purdy will resume practicing this week after doing so in a limited fashion last week. The 49ers likely will roll with whoever is healthiest among Purdy and Jones on Sunday against the Jaguars considering practice-squad member Adrian Martinez currently is the only other QB in San Francisco that's eligible to be on the active roster for game days.
Sep 21, 2025
Aggravates knee injury in win
Jones said he aggravated a previous knee injury in Sunday's win over the Cardinals, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones said he dealt with a sprained PCL over the summer and aggravated it in the second half of Sunday's victory. Jones was able to stay in the game and finish the contest with a knee brace. With Brock Purdy (shoulder/toe) nearing a return, potentially as soon as Week 4 against the Jaguars, Jones may get time to heal. Adrian Martinez is next up on the depth chart as the Niners' QB3.
Sep 21, 2025
Another spot start in place of Purdy
Jones will start Sunday's game against the Cardinals after the 49ers ruled out Brock Purdy (left shoulder/toe).
ANALYSIS
Purdy did everything in his power to be available to the 49ers offense after missing just one game due to a turf toe variant and also an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. Having said that, his absence will extend to two contests, setting Jones up for another spot start under center. Working in place of Purdy last Sunday at New Orleans, Jones led San Francisco to a 26-21 win while completing 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, rushing six times for six yards and fumbling twice (one lost).
Sep 19, 2025
Primed for another start
Jones is on track for another start, with 49ers coach Kyle Shanhan saying Friday that Brock Purdy (toe/shoulder) is "highly unlikely" to start Sunday's game against Arizona, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Niners list Purdy as questionable, but Shanahan's comments suggest it's only to leave the door open for a backup role. Jones is preparing for another start, after completing 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns in a 26-21 win over the Saints last week.
Sep 14, 2025
Tosses three TDs in win
Jones completed 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday's 26-21 win over the Saints. He added six rushing yards on six carries.
ANALYSIS
The three passing TDs tied the former Patriot's career high, as Jones connected with Luke Farrell in the first quarter, Christian McCaffrey in the second and Jauan Jennings in the fourth. With Brock Purdy (toe/shoulder) expected to miss multiple games, Jones could get a chance to grow comfortable at the helm of the 49ers' offense, although he'll be without the services of George Kittle (hamstring) and Brandon Aiyuk (knee). Assuming Purdy doesn't make a rapid recovery, Jones will look to carry his momentum into a Week 3 matchup against the Cardinals.
Sep 12, 2025
Getting first start under Shanahan
Jones will start Sunday's game at New Orleans in place of Brock Purdy (toe), Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
There have long been rumors about Kyle Shanahan preferring Jones to Trey Lance -- but getting overruled by GM John Lynch -- ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft. The ship that Jones is captaining now isn't nearly as pretty as the one he would've been joining back then, as the 49ers currently have TE George Kittle (hamstring) and WR Brandon Aiyuk (knee) on injured reserve, with LT Trent Williams (knee) and WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder) listed as questionable. Jones gets a decent matchup, at least, playing indoors against a Saints team that's less talented than even this injury-riddled version of the 49ers. Reports suggest Jones is likely to start multiple games, although the Niners waited until Friday to rule Purdy out for Week 2.
Sep 10, 2025
Likely starting Week 2
San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan suggested Jones is likely to start Sunday's game at New Orleans in place of Brock Purdy (toe, shoulder), Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
To be exact, Shanahan said Purdy is a "long shot" for Sunday and could even end up missing multiple weeks, even though the QB took snap in Sunday's win at Seattle. Jones has 49 NFL starts to his name, including seven last year in Jacksonville, but he's never come close to the solid numbers he posted his rookie year in New England. He did help Jaguars WR Brian Thomas put up huge stats last December, so there's at least potential for Jones to keep things rolling for Christian McCaffrey, Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings (shoulder) while Purdy and George Kittle (IR- hamstring) miss time.
Sep 3, 2025
Past knee injury
Jones (knee) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones missed the 49ers' preseason finale due to a knee sprain, but his full participation in Wednesday's practice indicates it is no longer an issue. The 2021 first-rounder is slated to begin the season as the 49ers' backup quarterback behind Brock Purdy. Jones had the same role in Jacksonville last year behind Trevor Lawrence, but the former appeared in 10 regular-season games (seven starts) and completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions while rushing for 92 yards and one score on 28 carries.
Aug 19, 2025
Out for preseason finale
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Jones will miss Saturday's preseason finale against the Chargers due to a knee sprain, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones is expected to be ready for Week 1, but for the 49ers' exhibition finale it will have to be Carter Bradley and Nate Sudfeld who either split reps or enter after Brock Purdy, depending on whether Shanahan opts to play his starters Saturday. With nearly three weeks to get healthy before suiting up on the road at Seattle on Sunday, Sept. 7, though, Jones should have plenty of time to recover and open the regular season as the No. 2 option behind Purdy.
Aug 19, 2025
Misses Tuesday's practice
Jones is not practicing Tuesday due to an apparent knee injury suffered during Saturday's 22-19 preseason win over the Raiders, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones' injury isn't believed to be serious, but it could impact his availability for Saturday's preseason finale against the Chargers. San Francisco already has Carter Bradley on the roster and signed Nate Sudfeld on Tuesday, per Adam Schefter of ESPN, giving the team additional depth behind Jones and starter Brock Purdy.
Aug 10, 2025
Starts preseason opener
Jones completed four of seven pass attempts for 74 yards and an interception while rushing once for two yards in Saturday's 30-9 preseason loss the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Jones got the nod under center with starter Brock Purdy and the rest of San Francisco's key starters sitting out Saturday's exhibition opener. The veteran backup led a scoring drive that resulted in a Patrick Taylor rushing touchdown to open the contest, but he also committed a turnover on his third and final possession. Jones isn't facing any competition for the 49ers' No. 2 job as he continues to get acclimated with a new offense this preseason.
Mar 12, 2025
Moving to Bay Area
The 49ers signed Jones to a two-year, $7 million contract Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
San Francisco was reportedly interested in Jones ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, but the organization instead drafted Trey Lance with the third overall pick while Jones went to New England at No. 15. However, the 49ers will now get a chance to work with Jones after the Alabama product mostly failed to live up to expectations during his first four campaigns in the NFL. Jones has started 49 of his 52 regular-season appearances and has a career 54:44 TD:INT, so he'll be one of the NFL's most capable backups as he works behind Brock Purdy next season.
Jan 5, 2025
Modest numbers in finale
Jones completed 20 of 32 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown with an interception in Sunday's 26-23 overtime loss to the Colts. He added 17 rushing yards on five carries.
ANALYSIS
He connected with Parker Washington for a nine-yard score in the fourth quarter that tied the game at 20-20, although it nearly didn't count -- the wideout lost the ball just before the goal line, but was ruled to have recovered it and gotten into the end zone before being downed. Jones saw significant action in eight straight games to close out the 2024 season, starting seven of them in place of Trevor Lawrence (shoulder), and the former Patriot completed 65.2 percent of his passes during that span with an 8:8 TD:INT and a 6.5 YPA. While those numbers were merely adequate, they could be good enough to earn him some attention from QB-needy teams this offseason as part of a free-agent class that figures to have little depth beyond Sam Darnold.

Keeps offense on schedule
Jones completed 15 of his 22 passes for 174 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 20-13 win over the Titans.
ANALYSIS
The Jaguars never trailed in the game and had a 13-0 lead by halftime. That allowed the ground game to be the focus of the offense, though Jones delivered when called upon. He completed a pair of passes when given a short field early in the second quarter, which concluded with a two-yard touchdown toss to Parker Washington. He later orchestrated 16-play, 74 yard drive that was capped by an 11-yard touchdown to Brian Thomas that sealed the win for the Jaguars early in the fourth quarter, a possession that also included a deep 24-yard completion to Washington. Jones had a rocky beginning to his time as the starter in Jacksonville, though he's led a relatively competent offense in recent weeks and has multiple touchdowns in three of his last five games.
Dec 22, 2024
Decent showing against Raiders
Jones completed 25 of 39 passes for 247 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 19-14 loss to the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
The Jaguars haven't been afraid to take to the air with Jones under center, as he's now attempted 46 and 39 passes in the last two weeks. His stat line was driven by that volume rather than efficiency, illustrated by averaging just 6.3 yards per attempt despite connecting with Brian Thomas for a 62-yard score late in the third quarter. The biggest positive for the day was Jones' ball security, marking only the second time he did not turn the ball over in six games as Jacksonville's starter.
Dec 15, 2024
Two TDs, two INTs in Week 15 loss
Jones completed 31 of 46 passes for 294 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 32-25 loss to the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Jones threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Brian Thomas on the opening drive, taking advantage of a drive-extending holding penalty on Sauce Gardner. Jacksonville's next possession ended in an interception, but Jones subsequently led the Jaguars to two field goals to take a 13-7 lead into the locker room. The Jets eventually inched ahead 17-16 before Jones responded with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Thomas with 10:58 to go in the fourth quarter. Jacksonville answered another Jets go-ahead score with a game-tying field goal, but after the Jets took the lead again, Gardner got the last laugh with a game-sealing interception of Jones in the final minute. This was an encouraging outing for Jones, who set a season high for passing yards and doubled his season touchdown pass total heading into a Week 16 road game against the Raiders, which will have significant implications for the 2025 NFL Draft order.
Dec 8, 2024
Two picks in win
Jones completed 23 of 31 passes for 220 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 10-6 win over the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Jones connected with Brian Thomas on long passes of 21 and 31 yards early in the third quarter to set up the lone touchdown of the game. Those were the highlights of an otherwise unremarkable performance, as he turned the ball over with a bad interception early in the opening quarter when he overthrew Thomas and otherwise struggled to move the offense. Positively, the Jaguars managed to end their five-game losing streak and Jones will lead the offense once again heading into a Week 15 matchup against the Jets.
Dec 4, 2024
Set up for more starts
The Jaguars placed Trevor Lawrence (head) on injured reserve Wednesday, leaving Jones as the top quarterback on the active roster.
ANALYSIS
Lawrence technically could return from injured reserve for Week 18, but it's probably not a consideration, as there'd been discussion of season-ending surgery on his left shoulder before he suffered a concussion during Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Texans. Jones played well in relief of Lawrence on Sunday, after struggling mightily in previous two games when Lawrence was inactive and Jones was the starter. The Jaguars could eventually turn to CJ Beathard but figure to stick with Jones for now, putting the former Patriot under center for Sunday's game against Tennessee.
Dec 2, 2024
Impressive in emergency duty
Jones replaced Trevor Lawrence (concussion) with 3:57 remaining in the second quarter of the Jaguars' 23-20 loss to the Texans on Sunday and completed 20 of 32 passes for 235 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed three times for six yards, recovered a fumble and threw a two-point conversion pass.
ANALYSIS
Jones got off to a slow start reminiscent of his lackluster two-game starting stint in Weeks 10 and 11, but he built momentum over the course of the second half and nearly rallied the Jaguars via a pair of fourth-quarter scoring tosses to Parker Washington (22 yards) and Brian Thomas (six yards). Jones is seemingly slated for at least one more start at the very minimum in a Week 14 road matchup against the Titans, and given the state of Jacksonville's season and Lawrence's value to the franchise, the former could well remain under center for what remains of the campaign.
Dec 1, 2024
Returning to backup role
Jones will serve as the Jaguars' backup quarterback in Sunday's game against the Texans with Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) having been cleared to start after missing the previous two contests, Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union reports.
ANALYSIS
While Lawrence could still require offseason surgery to address an AC joint sprain in his non-throwing shoulder, the quarterback looks on track to play through the issue over the final six games of the season after he responded well during a trio of limited practices this week. Jones had filled in for Lawrence as Jacksonville's starter in the two games prior to the team's Week 12 bye, completing 31 of 51 pass attempts (60.8 percent) for 249 yards (4.9 YPA), no touchdowns and three interceptions in losses to the Vikings and Lions. Despite the pair of poor showings, Jones will at least retain the No. 2 job ahead of CJ Beathard, who is inactive for the Week 13 contest.
Nov 17, 2024
Another forgettable spot start
Jones completed 17 of 29 passes for 138 yards with no touchdowns and one interception while adding two rushes for seven yards in the Jaguars' 52-6 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Making his second straight spot start for Trevor Lawrence (shoulder), Jones was essentially as ineffective as he had been in Week 10 against the Vikings, with the exception being he threw one fewer interception. Otherwise, the 2021 first-round pick was completely incapable of helping the Jaguars keep up with a juggernaut of a Lions offense that only failed to score on a meaningless end-of-game drive. Jones unsurprisingly focused most of his attention on Brian Thomas and Evan Engram, but he figures to revert to a backup role for a Week 13 home matchup against the Texans on Sunday, Dec. 1 since Lawrence will likely have enough time to get healthy over the Week 12 bye.
Nov 13, 2024
Starting for Lawrence again Sunday
Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said Jones will start Sunday's game against the Lions in Detroit, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With Pederson ruling Trevor Lawrence out for a second straight game, Jones will get another opportunity to direct the offense after struggling to lead productive drives in his first extended action with the Jaguars in Week 10. Jones completed 14 of 22 passes for 111 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in last Sunday's 12-7 loss to the Vikings, committing three turnovers in total after also losing a fumble. The matchup with a Lions defense that hasn't been as productive against the pass (6.5 yards per attempt allowed) or in generating pressure (24 sacks in nine games) as Minnesota is a slightly more favorable one for Jones, but he still profiles as a low-end fantasy option, given his lack of rushing ability and the relatively muted passing production he's shown over his 43 career starts between New England and Jacksonville. Per Demetrius Harvey of The Florida Times-Union, Pederson said Tuesday that he has optimism Lawrence will be able to return following the Jaguars' Week 12 bye, so Jones' run as a sta
Nov 10, 2024
Abysmal showing in loss
Jones completed 14 of 22 passes for 111 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 12-7 loss to the Vikings. He added five rushes for eight yards and a touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Jones drew his first start with the Jaguars due to Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) being sidelined. Things got off to a strong start, as Jones went 4-for-4 for 48 yards while sneaking into the end zone for a touchdown on Jacksonville's opening possession. However, things went downhill thereafter, including an interception that concluded the team's final chance to win the game late in the fourth quarter. Lawrence practiced in limited capacity throughout the week, meaning he could return for a Week 11 matchup against the Lions -- a move that would return Jones to the bench.
Nov 10, 2024
Slated for Week 10 start
Jones will start Sunday's game against the Vikings with Trevor Lawrence (shoulder) listed as questionable but slated to be inactive for the contest, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Even though Lawrence was listed as a limited practice participant Wednesday through Friday, Pelissero notes that Jones took all the first-team reps and will be in line for his first extended action of the season with Jacksonville, as his prior two appearances had come at the tail end of blowout losses. Jones -- who previously started 42 games with the Patriots over the past three seasons -- could be headed for additional starts beyond Sunday, with Ian Rapoport of NFL Network noting that Lawrence is dealing with a significant AC joint sprain to his non-throwing shoulder that likely puts him in the week-to-week rather than the day-to-day category. While surgery is considered a possibility for Lawrence, the Jaguars' plan for the time being is to have him treat the injury through rest and rehab. The Jaguars will play the Lions in Week 11 before going on bye Week 12, so it may make sense for the team to have Jones start in place of Lawrence for the next two games before reassessing its quarterback situation follow
Nov 7, 2024
Could be headed for Week 10 start
Jones was the first quarterback to go through drills during Thursday's practice and appears to be in line to start Sunday against the Vikings, Mia O'Brien of 1010 XL 92.5 FM Jacksonville reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Doug Pederson didn't address the Jaguars' quarterback situation Thursday, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported earlier Thursday that Lawrence is unlikely to play Week 10 while he continues to receive treatment and weighs options for addressing discomfort in his non-throwing shoulder. Lawrence was listed as a limited participant in practice Thursday for the second day in a row, and official word on his status for Sunday may not arrive until after the Jaguars' final practice of the week Friday. That being said, the fact that Jones was first in line for drills supports the notion that Lawrence won't be available Sunday, as does the Jaguars' signing of C.J. Beathard off the Dolphins' practice squad Wednesday to fortify the quarterback room. Jones has served as Lawrence's backup through the Jaguars' first nine games of 2024 and has made just two brief cameos at the tail end of blowout losses in Weeks 3 and 6, but the 26-year-old boasts 42 games of NFL starting experience from his time in New England
Aug 27, 2024
Wins backup QB spot
The Jaguars kept Jones over C.J. Beathard (groin) as the No. 2 QB on their initial 53-man roster, Justin Barney of News4Jax reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones completed 38 of 52 passes (73.1 percent) for 421 yards (8.1 YPA) and three touchdowns in three preseason games, while Beathard attempted just 21 passes before a groin injury knocked him out of action. Beathard was then released Tuesday with an injury settlement, leaving Jones as the backup to Trevor Lawrence heading into Week 1.
Aug 18, 2024
Sharp in preseason start
Jones completed 16 of 23 passes for 210 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and added six rushes for 14 yards in the Jaguars' 20-7 preseason win over the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Jones started and played the entire first half and returned for the fourth quarter, an unusual pattern that afforded him plenty of opportunity. The 2021 first-round pick of the Patriots, who's looking for a career reset in Jacksonville as Trevor Lawrence's backup, was impressive throughout, and he connected with Parker Washington (25 yards) and Brevin Easton (31 yards) for his pair of touchdown tosses. The two scoring drives spanned 17 and eight plays, confidence-building marches that Jones was able to navigate without turnovers. Jones is likely to see a solid amount of playing time once again in the preseason finale against the Falcons in Atlanta on Friday night.
Aug 17, 2024
Set for start
Jones will start Saturday's preseason game against Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Coach Doug Pederson made the announcement Saturday evening, after previously suggesting Jones and C.J. Beathard would each play a half. It seems Jones will get the first half and Beathard the second, while starter Trevor Lawrence may be done for the preseason after playing one drive in Jacksonville's exhibition opener.
Aug 8, 2024
Third on deck Saturday
Jones will suit up for Saturday's preseason game against the Chiefs after Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard have taken the field, John Shipley of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones, who had his fifth-year option declined after being dealt to Jacksonville by New England earlier this offseason, appears to currently be behind Beathard in Jaguars' backup quarterback competition. There's plenty of time for that standing to shift ahead of Week 1, especially if the 2021 first-round pick can impress during his preseason appearances, but for now Jones' fantasy value is minimal outside of deeper two-QB formats.
May 3, 2024
Fifth-year option not picked up
The Jaguars didn't pick up Jones' fifth-year contract option, AL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While Jacksonville picked up the fifth-year options of starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and top running back Travis Etienne, the team elected not to do so with Jones, who the Patriots took 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The decision wasn't surprising, given that the value of the Alabama product's option was $25.6 million, the same figure that applied to Lawrence. With the Jaguars, Michael DiRocco of ESPN notes that Jones -- who was obtained from New England in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick -- is slated to compete with C.J. Beathard to be the team's top backup signal caller in 2024 and potentially beyond. During his three-year stint with the Patriots, Jones drew 42 starts, but the 25-year-old's 2023 campaign wound up with him being benched after Week 12 in favor of Bailey Zappe.
Mar 10, 2024
Bound for Jacksonville
The Jaguars are expected to finalize a trade Sunday to acquire Jones from the Patriots in exchange for a sixth-round pick, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The deal won't become official until the new league year begins Wednesday, but assuming Jones is able to pass a physical, the Jacksonville native will return to his hometown team heading into his fourth NFL season. Though he served as a 42-game starter over his first three seasons in New England, Jones slid to third on the depth chart by the end of the 2023 campaign and finished his tenure with the Patriots with a 66.1 percent completion rate for 6.8 yards per attempt and a 46:36 TD:INT. He'll give the Jaguars an experienced backup option behind Trevor Lawrence, who has thus far proven durable in his young career with just one missed game over three seasons. Expect the Jaguars to decline Jones' pricey fifth-year option on his rookie contract this spring, which will make the 25-year-old signal-caller eligible for free agency following the 2024 season.
Mar 8, 2024
Pats open to trade offers
New England is open to trading Jones and has engaged with discussions in teams around the league, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Patriots have been consistently rumored to be open to revamping the quarterback room this offseason, and Mark Daniels of The Providence Journal reports that the team has no intentions of picking up Jones' fifth-year option. Jones, a 2021 first-round pick, finished his third NFL season as a healthy scratch after being replaced by Bailey Zappe as New England's starter Week 13, ending the year with a mediocre 2,120 passing yards and 10:12 TD:INT. It's unclear whether Jones will have a significant trade market at this point, but there are enough questions marks at quarterback elsewhere in the league that some team should be willing to take a chance on the young signal-caller, even if they may not be willing to part too substantial of draft capital.
Jan 10, 2024
Logs 2,120 passing yards this season
Jones finished the 2023 season with 2,120 passing yards to go along with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 11 games.
ANALYSIS
Jones, who was supplanted as the Patriots' starting QB in Week 13 by Bailey Zappe, finished his third season as a pro as the inactive third QB in Week 18. Per Evan Lazar of the team's official site, the 2021 first-rounder is unlikely to have his fifth-year contract option picked up by New England. Beyond that, it remains to be seen if Jones will be given an opportunity to compete for the starting job in 2024, with Lazar suggesting that it's possible that the signal caller could be dealt this offseason and thus get a fresh start in a new locale.
Jan 7, 2024
Third QB on Sunday
Jones (coach's decision) was designated the Patriots' inactive third QB for Sunday's game against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
As a result, Nathan Rourke will serve as Bailey Zappe's top backup in the Patriots' season finale. Jones last saw game action in the team's Week 12 loss to the Giants.
Dec 4, 2023
Backs up Zappe in Week 13
Jones was active but didn't see any snaps in Sunday's 6-0 loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Heading into Week 13 action, Jones had started all 11 of the Patriots' games, but on Sunday it was Bailey Zappe who got the nod at QB. Given the results of the contest, it remains to be seen which signal-caller will handle the first snap Thursday night against the Steelers, but it would surprise us if coach Bill Belichick offered much clarity on the situation in the coming days.
Dec 1, 2023
Expected to give way to Zappe on Sunday
Though coach Bill Belichick hasn't confirmed the Patriots' Week 13 starting QB, Evan Lazar of the team's official site notes that all all signs still point to Bailey Zappe starting over Jones in Sunday's game against the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Jones has started all 11 of the 2-9 Patriots' games to date this season, but he's been pulled early in four of those contests, including after halftime in the team's 10-7 loss to the Giants in Week 12. On Sunday, it appears as though the team plans to turn to Zappe, and in that context Jones is not a fantasy lineup option this weekend.
Nov 29, 2023
Could give way to Zappe
During the media-access portion of Wednesday's practice, Jones didn't make any throws, while Bailey Zappe logged multiple QB reps and was followed by practice squad member Malik Cunningham, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Bill Belichick has declined to name a starting quarterback for this weekend's game against the Chargers. However, based on what transpired during the initial stages of Wednesday's practice, it looks like Zappe -- who replaced Jones after halftime during the Patriots' 10-7 loss to the Giants on Sunday -- could get the nod versus Los Angeles. Jones has started all 11 games for the 2-9 Patriots this season, but he's been pulled from four games in that span.
Nov 29, 2023
No word on Week 13 starter
Coach Bill Belichick declined Wednesday to name a starting QB for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports. Jones was replaced by Bailey Zappe after halftime during the Patriots' 10-7 loss to the Giants in Week 12.
ANALYSIS
Jones has started all 11 games for the Patriots this season, but after being pulled in favor of Zappe once again this past weekend, the team's signal-caller situation remains murky, as it was leading up to Week 12 action. Aside from Jones and Zappe -- who completed nine of 14 passes for 54 yards, no touchdowns and one interception versus New York -- Will Grier has agreed to join New England's practice squad, which already includes Malik Cunningham.
Nov 26, 2023
Replaced after first half
Jones was replaced by Bailey Zappe to begin the second half of Sunday's game against the Giants, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Leading up to the contest, the Patriots didn't publicly name a starting QB, but Jones ended up getting the nod and playing the entire first half. In the process, the 2021 first-rounder completed 12 of 21 passing attempts for 89 yards and two interceptions. With the signal-caller pivot Sunday, it remains to be seen who helms the team's offense in Week 13, but if Zappe looks sharp versus the Giants it could earn him another look against the Chargers next weekend.
Nov 26, 2023
Poised for Week 12 start
Jones took reps with the first-team offense during pregame warmups and appears in line to start Sunday's game against the Giants, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Though head coach Bill Belichick never offered confirmation on a Week 12 starting quarterback coming out of a bye week, the Patriots appear poised to stick with Jones, who was benched for New England's final possession of a Week 10 loss to Indianapolis. Jones has completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 6.3 yards per attempt and a 10:10 TD:INT through his first 10 starts this season, so he could be on a short leash Sunday if he struggles early on. The possibility also exists that the Patriots deploy some sort of quarterback timeshare arrangement between Jones and Bailey Zappe, as both signal-callers reportedly received first-team reps in practice this week, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Jones and Zappe are the only two signal-callers active for the Patriots after the team waived Will Grier on Saturday.
Nov 26, 2023
Expected starter Sunday
Jones is expected to start Sunday's game against the Giants, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
On Friday, Patriots coach Bill Belichick declined to reveal the team's starting QB, but it looks like Jones, who according to Mike Reiss of ESPN split practice reps this week about 50-50 with Bailey Zappe, is trending toward getting the initial snaps Sunday. If that's the case, Zappe would be next in line for signal-caller work, either by design to mix him in or should Jones struggle in the contest, given that the team let Will Grier go Saturday and didn't elevate Malik Cunningham from the practice squad ahead of Week 12 action. Considering the uncertainly that has surrounded 2-8 New England's QB situation following the team's Week 11 bye, Jones is a risky option in fantasy lineups, considering that he may be on a short leash, assuming he does indeed take the first snap on offense versus New York.
Nov 25, 2023
Appears in line to start Sunday
The Patriots are planning to have Jones start Sunday's Week 12 contest against the Giants, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
There has been uncertainty about who would start at quarterback for New England in Week 12 ever since head coach Bill Belichick refused to commit to either Jones, Bailey Zappe or another option following the team's Week 10 loss to Indianapolis. The Patriots were on bye last week, and Jones and Zappe split starting reps during practice this week, with Jones reportedly putting on the better performance. That appears to have been enough to allow him to maintain the lead role behind center, though a poor start to this Sunday's clash with New York could lead Belichick to turn to Zappe at any moment.
Nov 24, 2023
No word on Week 12 starting QB
Jones' standing on the depth chart remains unclear heading into Sunday's game against the Giants after head coach Bill Belichick declined to name the Patriots' starting quarterback when he spoke to the media Friday, Evan Lazar of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones has started all 10 of New England's games this season, but after throwing a costly interception late in the Patriots' 10-6 loss to the Colts in Week 10, he was replaced by Bailey Zappe with 1:52 left in the fourth quarter. The Patriots may not reveal their Week 12 starting quarterback until Sunday, but Lazar notes that "based on the happenings down at Gillette Stadium this week," the sense is that Jones will continue to direct the offense against the Giants, at least to begin the game. If that ends up being the case, Jones could well be on a short leash, so he'll profile as a risky fantasy lineup option, in any case. The Patriots' other quarterback options are Zappe and Will Grier, while Malik Cunningham lingers on the practice squad but has reportedly seen more reps at receiver rather than behind center in recent weeks.
Nov 22, 2023
Avoids Week 12 injury report
Jones isn't included on the Patriots' initial Week 12 injury report released Wednesday after he suffered an unspecified bruise in New England's 10-6 loss to Indianapolis in Week 10.
ANALYSIS
Though Jones was sent in for X-rays after he didn't take the field for the Patriots' final possession of the Nov. 12 loss to the Colts in Germany, the injury was never viewed as the primary cause of his absence. Instead, the Patriots' decision to go with Bailey Zappe -- who ended up throwing game-sealing interception -- late in the fourth quarter seemed to be a result of Jones being benched for performance-related reasons. While the Patriots were on bye this past week, head coach Bill Belichick was non-committal on the team's plans at quarterback moving forward, and the team has yet to name a starter for Sunday's game against the Giants as Week 12 prep gets underway. Per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, Jones appeared to be the first quarterback taking reps during Tuesday's unofficial practice session, though Zappe saw a significant share of the snaps behind him. Will Grier also lingers on the roster as a third option at quarterback, and at this stage, it's conceivable that any of the three could draw the Week 12 star

Takes first QB reps Tuesday
Jones (undisclosed) handled the initial QB reps at Tuesday's unofficial practice, Mark Daniels of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
After the Patriots' last game Week 10 against the Colts in Germany, coach Bill Belichick was non-committal on who would be under center following a Week 11 bye, and he remained that way Tuesday, telling Evan Lazar of the team's' official site, "I've told all the players the same thing: be ready to go." The fact Jones mixed into drills first Tuesday, followed by Bailey Zappe, perhaps is the first indication that the former will continue to operate as New England's starting quarterback Sunday at the Giants. Still, given Belichick's comments the last few weeks, a decision may not be apparent until game day, or close to it.
Nov 21, 2023
Belichick won't name starter
Speaking with the media Tuesday, coach Bill Belichick refused to name a starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Giants, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. "I've told everybody to be ready to go," Belichick said.
ANALYSIS
Belichick is trying to keep things close to the vest and said he'd announce a starter Sunday morning. All three of Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe and Will Grier have taken first-team reps in practice since the Week 10 loss to the Colts. Jones has not progressed as expected under offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien, throwing 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions across 10 starts, while averaging a career-low 203.1 passing yards per game. Zappe would be the most logical option to start if it's not Jones. Neither is a recommended fantasy bet for the foreseeable future.
Nov 14, 2023
Status as starter in question
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was non-committal Tuesday when asked if Jones (undisclosed) was still the team's No. 1 quarterback, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. "We have a lot of things to work on this week as a team. We'll work through those. That is what we are going to do this week," Belichick said.
ANALYSIS
With New England heading into its Week 11 bye riding a three-game losing streak, Belichick and his coaching staff appear set to re-evaluate their depth chart at multiple spots, including quarterback. Though Jones has started all 10 of the team's games to date, he's failed to finish three of those contests. His first two mid-game benchings came amid blowout losses to the Cowboys and Saints in Weeks 4 and 5, respectively, but Jones' early removal this past Sunday's 10-6 loss to the Colts was more noteworthy, considering that it came while the Patriots had a chance to win the game with less than two minutes remaining. Jones completed 15 of his first 19 pass attempts for 170 yards on the day but was benched after throwing a costly red zone interception with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter. Bailey Zappe stepped in under center and threw a similarly ugly game-sealing interception on the subsequent possession, but coming out of the bye week, the 2-8 Patriots could still be motivated to see if Zappe or third-stringer

Undergoes X-rays after loss
Jones underwent X-rays following Sunday's 10-6 loss to the Colts in Germany, after we said he suffered a bruise, Mark Daniels of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
The nature of the injury isn't known, but perhaps of more import is the fact Jones was benched in favor of backup quarterback Bailey Zappe for the Patriots' final possession of the game. The reason likely was a back-breaking interception from Jones in the red zone with 4:24 remaining in the contest, and he finished with a paltry 170 yards and no touchdowns on 15-for-20 passing. Considering the overall situation, it'll be something to monitor to see if Jones or Zappe will be directing New England's offense after the team's Week 11 bye on Sunday, Nov. 26 at the Giants.
Nov 12, 2023
Replaced late in Sunday's loss
Jones was replaced by Bailey Zappe with 1:52 left in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 10-6 loss to the Colts, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With New England down by four points late in the contest, the team turned to Zappe to try to get a spark, though his stint resulted in three of his seven passing attempts being completed for 25 yards and a pick. Prior to being replaced Sunday, Jones completed 15 of 20 passing attempts for 170 yards and an interception, while rushing three times for 25 yards. The Patriots head into their bye week with a 2-8 record and until or unless coach Bill Belichick confirms the team's Week 12 starting QB, there will be a degree of uncertainty surrounding the situation.
Nov 5, 2023
Another clunker in Week 9 loss
Jones completed 24 of 44 passes for 220 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Commanders. He added three rushing yards on three attempts.
ANALYSIS
Jones had Tyquan Thornton open but missed him on fourth down to end New England's opening drive in Washington territory. After failing to produce any points in the first quarter, Jones bounced back with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Henry in the second to put the Patriots on the board. Outside of that throw, Jones was largely inaccurate and inefficient, as he tied his season low with just 5.0 yards per attempt. Despite those struggles, Jones had New England in range for a game-tying field goal at Washington's 41-yard line but was picked off with 30 seconds left to end it. After this putrid performance, calls for Bailey Zappe to replace Jones under center could renew as the 2-7 Patriots prepare to face the Colts in Frankfurt in Week 10.
Oct 29, 2023
Pair of touchdowns in loss
Jones completed 19 of 29 passes for 161 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while also netting minus-2 yards on on his only carry in the Patriots' 31-17 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Jones struggled to generate much production downfield, leading to a modest 5.6 yards per attempt for the third-year pro. Jones was able to produce his second straight two-touchdown performance and third multi-score tally of the season by hitting Kendrick Bourne (knee) and JuJu Smith-Schuster for touchdown passes of 24 and three yards, respectively. However, he also failed to reach the 200-yard mark for the third time this season, certainly not a recipe for success when facing the Dolphins' high-octane air attack. Jones and the Patriots next welcome in the Commanders for a Week 9 interconference battle.

Throws two TDs in upset of Bills
Jones completed 25 of 30 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 29-25 win over the Bills. He added three rushing attempts for 11 yards.
ANALYSIS
Jones limited his mistakes and kept the offense on schedule as New England didn't trail over the first 58 minutes. After Buffalo took its first lead with 1:58 remaining, Jones led an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, culminating with a game-winning one-yard touchdown pass to Mike Gesicki with 12 seconds remaining. That was Jones' second touchdown pass of the fourth quarter, as he also found Kendrick Bourne from four yards out halfway through the quarter. New England improved to 2-5 while Jones snapped a three-game touchdown drought to boost his TD:INT to 7:7 heading into a Week 8 road game in Miami.

Remains starter for Week 7
Offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien said Tuesday that he expects Jones to start the Patriots' Week 7 game against the Bills, Michael Giardi of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Though he avoided a third straight mid-game benching while the Patriots were more competitive in a 21-17 loss to the Raiders in Week 6, Jones threw an ugly interception while New England was in field-goal range late in the second quarter and finished with another underwhelming stat line. Through six games, Jones has completed just 64.2 percent of his passes for 6.0 yards per attempt -- both career-low marks -- while taking 12 sacks and throwing for five touchdowns against seven interceptions. Despite O'Brien's commitment, Jones' hold on the starting job still looks to be a tenuous one, especially while the 1-5 Patriots are holding three other quarterbacks (Malik Cunningham, Bailey Zappe and Will Grier) on the roster.
Oct 15, 2023
Poor numbers again Sunday
Jones completed 24 of 33 passes for 200 yards with an interception in Sunday's 21-17 loss to the Raiders. He also lost one yard on his only carry.
ANALYSIS
The third-year quarterback also got sacked for a safety late in the fourth quarter, ending any chance the Patriots might have had of putting together a comeback. Jones has now failed to throw a TD pass in three straight games while getting picked off five times over that stretch, and the only thing keeping him in the starting role might be the lack of a viable alternative on the roster -- undrafted rookie Malik Cunningham, who spent part of the offseason program getting reps as a wide receiver, dressed as the No. 2 QB on Sunday. Regardless of who's under center for the Pats in Week 7, they'll face a tough opponent in the Bills.

Could be on 'short leash' Sunday
Jones will remain the Patriots' starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Raiders in Las Vegas, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the third-year signal-caller will be "on a short leash," and a poor opening few series could result in him getting benched.
ANALYSIS
Though Jones was pulled early in blowout losses to the Cowboys and Saints in the past two weeks, head coach Bill Belichick reaffirmed his commitment to Jones after both contests. Even so, with Jones heading into Sunday with a 5:6 TD:INT, 6.0 yards per attempt and 62.5 percent completion rate through five games -- all of which represent steps back from his first two seasons in the league -- it's clear that the 25-year-old has lost some job security. In light of his struggles thus far, Jones warrants lineup consideration only in leagues that start two quarterbacks or have a QB flex spot, but he may be a dicey proposition even in those formats in Week 6 due to the risk of a mid-game benching. Though Bailey Zappe has replaced Jones in both of the past two games, Rapoport relays that Zappe and Will Grier have taken reps with the first-team offense along with Jones this week. The Patriots also signed Malik Cunningham off the practice squad Saturday, though he may be a candidate for more immediate work at receiver r

Confirmed as Week 6 starter
Coach Bill Belichick confirmed Wednesday that Jones remains the Patriots' starting QB ahead of Sunday's game against the Raiders, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
"Yeah, we're not making any changes," Belichick noted Wednesday morning of the team's Week 6 signal-caller situation. Over their last two games the Patriots have been outscored by a count of 72-3, but Belichick has been clear about not blaming the offense's slide solely on Jones. Either way, until or unless he picks up the pace, Jones -- who has been pulled in each of his last two starts -- will remain a speculative fantasy lineup option.
Oct 9, 2023
Remains New England's starter
Following Sunday's 34-0 loss to the Saints, coach Bill Belichick indicated that Jones would remain the Patriots' starting QB ahead of Week 6 action, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald and Mike Reiss of ESPN report.
ANALYSIS
Though Jones -- who has turned the ball over five times in the last two weeks -- has been replaced in consecutive games by backup Bailey Zappe, Belichick didn't put all of the blame on the Patriots' struggles on offense on his starting signal caller. "Yeah, there were a lot of problems," Belichick said after Sunday's shutout loss. "It certainly wasn't all on (Jones)." In any case, as this coming weekend's road game against the Raiders approaches, Jones profiles as a risky fantasy lineup option while helming a New England attack that has combined for just three points over the course of back-to-back blowout defeats.
Oct 8, 2023
Pulled in fourth quarter
Jones completed 12 of 22 pass attempts for 110 yards with two interceptions and a fumble before being replaced by Bailey Zappe with 13:03 left in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 34-0 loss to the Saints, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After taking over for Jones, Zappe completed three of nine passes for 22 yards. With the Patriots now 1-4 and Jones having been pulled from two straight contests, it remains to be seen who the team's starting QB will be next weekend against the Raiders. Either way, Jones doesn't profile as a high-percentage fantasy option in Week 6.
Oct 2, 2023
Will remain starter moving forward
Jones will remain the Patriots' starting quarterback despite being benched in the team's Week 4 blowout loss to Dallas, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
New England suffered its largest loss in the Bill Belichick era, but it appears the team isn't going to overreact to the poor performance. Jones was solid as a rookie, completing 68 percent of his passes for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, but it's been mixed results since then. The Patriots' backup quarterback, Bailey Zappe, showed flashes in limited action last year, but Rapoport notes it's clear Jones is still the best option moving forward.
Oct 1, 2023
Benched in blowout loss
Jones completed 12 of 21 passes with 150 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 38-3 loss to the Cowboys. He also rushed three times for seven yards and lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Jones had a disastrous start to the game, losing a fumble that was returned for a touchdown while also throwing a pick-six just before halftime. With New England down 31-3 late in the third quarter, Bailey Zappe was called upon to relieve Jones. However, after the game, coach Bill Belichick confirmed that Jones will remain the starter for a Week 5 matchup against the Saints,Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
Sep 24, 2023
Modest numbers in low-scoring win
Jones completed 15 of 29 passes for 201 yards and one touchdown while rushing four times for 13 yards in Sunday's 15-10 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Jones found Pharaoh Brown behind the defense for a 58-yard touchdown to take a 10-0 lead in the second quarter. That was the only touchdown New England mustered, but it was enough to get the Patriots into the win column for the first time in 2023. After throwing for 316 yards with three touchdowns in the season opener, Jones has failed to throw for 250 yards or multiple touchdowns in either of the next two games, and reaching those thresholds won't be easy on the road against Dallas in Week 4.
Sep 18, 2023
Pedestrian line in defeat
Jones completed 31 of 42 pass attempts for 231 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Dolphins. He added 25 rushing yards on five attempts.
ANALYSIS
Jones has now eclipsed 40 pass attempts in each of his first two starts after doing so just once in 2022. Part of it has to do with the Patriots facing tough opponents and being forced to throw from behind. Unfortunately for his fantasy managers, Jones was unable to convert all of those attempts into positive results against Miami's secondary like he did against the Eagles in Week 1. Things won't get any easier for Jones in the near future, as he will face the Jets' stout defense next Sunday with the Cowboys looming in Week 4.
Sep 10, 2023
Attempts 54 passes
Jones completed 35 of 54 passes for 316 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 25-20 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Jones and the Patriots fell behind 16-0 before the close of the first quarter, forcing the team to take to the air. That helped him reach 300 passing yards despite averaging only 5.8 yards per attempt. The highlights of Jones' performance came just before halftime and the close of the game, when he found Kendrick Bourne for a pair of scores from 19 and 11 yards away. The game took place in rain-soaked conditions, but Jones will have to increase his efficiency if he hopes to keep pace with the high-flying Dolphins offense in Week 2.

Not slated to face Titans
Jones isn't in line to see action in Friday night's preseason finale against the Titans, Karen Guregian of masslive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As Evan Lazar of the team's official site points out, Jones and the Patriots' starting offensive line played 25 snaps in the the preseason finale last year, but with the squad's line dealing with some injuries, it appears as though New England will play it safe with Jones on Friday. In that event, Jones' focus will shift toward preparing for a Week 1 start on Sept. 10 against a rugged Philadelphia defense.
Aug 20, 2023
Starts Saturday's preseason win
Jones made his preseason debut against Green Bay on Saturday, completing six of nine pass attempts for 52 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions in a 21-17 exhibition win.
ANALYSIS
Jones had a clean tune-up appearance from the pocket, leading an opening drive that Rhamondre Stephenson finished off with a rushing touchdown. The 25-year-old coughed up a fumble while getting sacked on the final play of his scheduled appearance, giving way to Bailey Zappe and the reserves after completing three drives. Jones will attempt to right the ship after a sophomore slump sapped his fantasy value heading into this year's drafts.
Aug 19, 2023
Expected to play Saturday
Based on warmups, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site expects Jones and the Patriots' healthy starters to see action in Saturday's preseason game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen how much action Jones and co. will see versus Green Bay, but once his looming stint is completed, Bailey Zappe, Malik Cunningham and Trace McSorley are candidates to see QB reps for the remainder of Saturday's contest.
Aug 19, 2023
Candidate to play versus Green Bay
Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal indicates that it's his understanding that Jones is expected to see action in Saturday's preseason game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site points out that Jones (who played in New England's final two exhibition games last year, per Daniels) and the team's other offensive starters played three drives in the second preseason game last year, and if the QB does play Saturday, a similar pattern could follow. In last week's preseason opener, Jones was rested, with Bailey Zappe, Malik Cunningham and Trace McSorley handling signal-caller duties.
Aug 10, 2023
Not in line to play Thursday
Jones isn't slated to play in Thursday's preseason opener against the Texans, NFL Network's Judy Battista reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Jones is in uniform ahead of the contest, he's among the players not expected to take the field against Houston. In his anticipated absence, Bailey Zappe, Trace McSorley and Malik Cunningham are available to handle the Patriots' QB reps Thursday.
Aug 10, 2023
Doesn't throw during warmups
Jones didn't throw in warmups prior to Thursday's preseason game against the Texans, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
With that, Lazar indicates that it looks like the Patriots will roll with some QB combo of Bailey Zappe, Trace McSorley, and Malik Cunningham versus Houston on Thursday. Assuming that's the case, Jones' next chance to see exhibition action would occur Aug. 19 against the Packers.
Aug 8, 2023
Not expected to play Thursday
Mike Reiss of ESPN.com suggested Tuesday that Jones probably won't play in Thursday's preseason opener against the Texans.
ANALYSIS
That's a notion echoed by both Mark Daniels of Masslive.com and Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site. In the event that Jones does sit out Thursday's contest, Bailey Zappe, Trace McSorley and Malik Cunningham would be candidates to log QB snaps against Houston.

Strong practice Tuesday
Jones turned in his best practice of training camp Tuesday, according to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that Jones finished the session going 7-of-10 in team drills, while scoring two TDs in a final red-zone portion versus the team's top defense. Per Callahan, the 2021 first-rounder "weaponized tempo, audibles and his best trait - accuracy within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage - over the best showing by any quarterback this summer." As the Patriots' preseason opener approaches, Dakota Randall of NESN.com suggests that talk of QB controversy seems to have settled down, even if coach Bill Belichick has yet to specifically confirm Jones -- who has been the team's clear top QB option since the start of training camp -- as the Week 1 starter.
Jun 14, 2023
Making case to remain starter
During OTAs and minicamp, Jones worked with the Patriots' first team offense "the vast majority of the time," according to Chris Mason of masslive.com.
ANALYSIS
While there had been some offseason speculation that there may be a QB controversy brewing in New England, Jones' efforts this spring suggest that he maintains a grip on the starting job ahead of 2022 fourth-rounder Bailey Zappe. Per Jeff Howe of The Athletic, Jones "has looked more confident this spring and has been throwing the ball well" while looking comfortable in the team's new offense under coordinator Bill O'Brien, who has reportedly been implementing portions of his system from the University of Alabama.

In good standing with coach
Coach Bill Belichick noted Friday that he "absolutely" feels the same way about Jones as he did prior to training camp last season, at which time he complimented the QB's progress, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
When asked if Jones is still the team's No. 1 signal-caller option, Belichick replied, "yeah, I mean, look, Mac's been our quarterback for two years. As I tell the team every year, each player, each coach, we all have to re-establish and prove ourselves every year. That's what this league is. That's for all of us -- '23 is '23. We'll see how '23 goes." Now heading into his third pro campaign since being drafted 15th overall in 2021, Jones is slated to work under new offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien, who noted that the team's incumbent starter has "worked really, really hard this offseason." Following the 2023 NFL Draft, in which the team didn't select a signal-caller, it appears as though Jones will have an opportunity to solidify his standing as the team's top option at the position, with 2022 fourth-rounder Bailey Zappe, Trace McSorley and reported UDFA addition Malik Cunningham also in the team's signal-caller mix.

Backup QB depth added
The Patriots have added Trace McSorley to a QB corps that also includes Jones and Bailey Zappe, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After letting veteran signal-caller Brian Hoyer go last month, the Patriots were in need of depth behind Jones and Zappe. In McSorley, the team adds a No. 3 option who can bring some rushing ability to the team's quarterback mix. As the coming season approaches, Eric Edholm of NFL.com notes that coach Bill Belichick declined last month to specifically confirm Jones as the team's starter for 2023, a context that has led to some speculation that Zappe could potentially make a run at the job this summer. While it may be that nothing will be handed to Jones and this is a situation to monitor in the coming months, Mike Reiss of ESPN previously relayed via team sources that the Patriots appear committed to seeing if Jones can get back on track (while playing under new offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien) in the wake of the 2021 first-rounder's uneven 2022 campaign.

Season over after Week 18 loss
Jones completed 26 of 40 passes for 243 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in Sunday's 35-23 loss to the Bills. He added five yards on four rushing attempts.
ANALYSIS
Jones tossed a pair of game-tying two-yard touchdowns in the first half, finding Jakobi Meyers in the first quarter and DeVante Parker in the second. He was intercepted at Buffalo's two-yard line in the third quarter, then found Parker for a 26-yard touchdown in the fourth before throwing away the Patriots' playoff hopes with interceptions on each of New England's final two drives. New England's Jones-led passing game held back an otherwise talented roster in his second season, but the 2021 first-round pick remains the front-runner for the team's starting quarterback job in 2023. Across 14 starts, Jones posted a 14:11 TD:INT while falling three passing yards shy of 3,000.
Jan 1, 2023
Pair of touchdowns in big win
Jones completed 20 of 33 passes for 203 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Patriots' 23-21 win over the Dolphins on Sunday. He also rushed three times for one yard.
ANALYSIS
Jones was able to put together a clean performance to help the Patriots even their record at 8-8 and remain in contention for a postseason spot. Forced to operate without both DeVante Parker (concussion) and Jonnu Smith (concussion), Jones spread the ball around to six targets overall, with 11 of his 20 completions going to Hunter Henry and Jakobi Meyers. The second-year signal-caller hit Tyquan Thornton (seven yards) and Jakobi Meyers (one yard) for his two touchdowns, the second capping off a clutch 11-play, 89-yard march that took over five minutes off the clock in the fourth quarter and extended a thin 16-14 lead at the time. Jones heads into a critical Week 18 road matchup against the Bills with back-to-back two-touchdown-pass tallies for the first time all season.
Dec 24, 2022
Bounces back in Week 16 loss
Jones completed 21 of 33 passes for 240 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and netted minus-1 yard on one rush attempt in the Patriots' 22-18 loss to the Bengals on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Jones put together much better numbers than during his forgettable Week 15 performance against the Raiders, although ultimately, the end result was another loss for New England. The second-year signal-caller found his most success when targeting Kendrick Bourne, although he continued to display strong chemistry with Jakobi Meyers as well. Jones will look to improve on Saturday's solid numbers in a favorable Week 17 home matchup against the Dolphins on Sunday, Jan. 1.
Dec 18, 2022
Struggles in Sunday's loss
Jones completed 13 of 31 passes for 112 yards in Sunday's 30-24 loss to the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
He added 10 yards on four carries. Jones simply couldn't get anything going through the air against a suspect Las Vegas secondary, setting a season low in passing yards for a full game, but New England's running game and defense kept the team in the contest until a shocking final play that resulted in a game-winning defensive score for former Patriot Chandler Jones. Jones the quarterback has failed to reach 200 yards in four of the last seven games, making him a very risky fantasy option in Week 16 against a Bengals defense that just forced Tom Brady to commit five turnovers.
Dec 12, 2022
Serviceable numbers in road win
Jones completed 24 of 35 passes for 235 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the Patriots' 27-13 win over the Cardinals on Monday night. He also netted minus-1 yards on five rush attempts and fumbled once but recovered.
ANALYSIS
Jones put together solid numbers overall, but his night was a disappointment from a fantasy perspective given that he had no hand in any of his team's touchdowns. The second-year signal-caller's one interception came at New England's 41-yard and set up a Cardinals field goal, but Jones otherwise stayed out of his team's way while the running game and defense shouldered a heavy load against an Arizona squad that lost Kyler Murray to a likely serious knee injury on the third offensive play. Jones next takes aim at a vulnerable Raiders secondary in a Week 15 road matchup.
Dec 1, 2022
Underwhelming numbers in loss
Jones completed 22 of 36 passes for 195 yards with one touchdown and no interception in the Patriots' 24-10 loss to the Bills on Thursday night. He also rushed three times for seven yards and committed a fumble that was recovered by New England.
ANALYSIS
Jones fell short of the 200-yard mark for the third time in the last five games on a night that was critical to the Patriots' playoff hopes. The second-year signal-caller did extend his interception-less streak to four contests, but after some modest early success. New England failed to garner any points on six consecutive possessions until a 17-play, 57-yard march in the fourth quarter after the Pats were already down 17 points. What's more, that march ended in a meaningless field goal when Jones threw three incompletions and took a sack on the last four plays after getting down to the Bills' 15-yard line. Jones' play and that of the entire offense will undoubtedly be the subject of plenty of scrutiny going into a Week 14 road interconference clash against the Cardinals on Monday night, Dec. 12.
Nov 24, 2022
Season-high yardage total in loss
Jones completed 28 of 39 passes for 382 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Patriots' 33-26 loss to the Vikings on Thursday night. He also fumbled once but recovered.
ANALYSIS
Jones put together his most productive day of the season yardage-wise in the losing effort, while completing four passes of greater than 30 yards. The second-year signal-caller hit Nelson Agholor and Hunter Henry for his pair of touchdown passes, and he had a second one to the latter reversed on replay as well. Nevertheless, the multi-score tally was Jones' first of the season, and he's now thrown for an impressive 628 yards over the last pair of games. Jones will be right be back in action next Thursday night for key primetime divisional home clash against the Bills.
Nov 20, 2022
Victorious in defensive battle
Jones completed 23 of 27 passes for 246 yards and rushed twice for three yards in Sunday's 10-3 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Jones didn't produce a touchdown, but he didn't turn the ball over, either. He led the Patriots down the field for a field goal to open the scoring early in the second quarter, but Jones took an ill-timed sack on the following drive that proved significant, as Nick Folk's field-goal attempt on the next play clanked off the crossbar to keep the score tied at three. While Jones was accurate, his dinking and dunking failed to generate any more points against New York's defense. That didn't matter, as New England scored a punt return touchdown in the final seconds to win it. The Patriots improved to 6-4 heading into a Thanksgiving Day trip to Minnesota.
Nov 6, 2022
Not asked to do much in win
Jones completed 20 of his 30 passes for 147 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 26-3 win over the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Jones played mistake-free, as he didn't turn the ball over and managed the Patriots' offense effectively. His lone touchdown came on a three-yard pass to Rhamondre Stevenson, and he connected with Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith for lengthy gains of 30 and 24 yards. In two full games since returning from an ankle injury, Jones has combined to throw for 341 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while averaging 5.2 yards per attempt.
Oct 30, 2022
Controversial flag erases pick-six
Jones completed 24 of 35 passes for 194 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 22-17 win over the Jets. He added 19 yards on seven rushing attempts.
ANALYSIS
Jones benefited from a quintessential Jets-Patriots moment late in the first half, as a controversial roughing the passer penalty erased a would-be pick-six that would have put the Jets up 17-3. New England instead got its second field goal on that drive to take a 10-6 deficit into the locker room. On the preceding possession, a questionable Jets unnecessary roughness penalty helped New England drive down to New York's 21-yard line, but Jones threw incomplete on 4th-and-1. Jones got a far better result on 4th-and-1 early in the third, finding Jakobi Meyers for a five-yard touchdown to take the lead. New England's defense led the way from there as the Patriots improved to 4-4. Jones was more lucky than good in this one, but he likely did enough to keep backup Bailey Zappe on the bench in Week 9 against the Colts.
Oct 28, 2022
Puts in full week of practice
Jones is dealing with numbness in the toes on his left foot, but he was a full participant in practice all week and will start Sunday's game against the Jets, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The toe numbness is likely related to the left high-ankle sprain that sidelined Jones for Weeks 3 through 6 before he returned to action for the Patriots' 33-14 loss to the Bears in Week 7. Jones started in the loss Monday, but he was replaced by Bailey Zappe after he threw an interception on his 16th and final snap of the night. According to the report, the lingering toe numbness didn't affect Jones in his on-field prep this week, and he's expected to have a longer leash Sunday now that he's further removed from the ankle sprain and after Zappe committed three turnovers in relief of Jones on Monday.
Oct 27, 2022
Confirmed as Week 8 starter
Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed Thursday that Jones will start Sunday's game against the Jets, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, for the first time since injuring his ankle in Week 3, Jones was not listed on the team's injury report, which was posted Wednesday. Based on that, it appears as though Jones won't face any notable limitations health-wise this weekend, and in that context Bailey Zappe is slated to serve as the Patriots' No. 2 QB on Sunday. Jone thus represents a lineup option deeper fantasy formats while squaring off against a Jets defense that has allowed an average of 209.4 passing yards per game to date.
Oct 26, 2022
Off the injury report and starting
Jones is slated to start Sunday's game against the Jets, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald and Field Yates of ESPN report.
ANALYSIS
Moreover, Jones -- who has been working his way back from an ankle injury -- is not listed on the Patriots' Week 8 injury report, which suggests that the QB is not expected to have any significant limitations when he takes the field this weekend. In his return from a three-game absence in Monday's 33-14 loss to the Bears, Jones completed three of six passes for 13 yards and a pick and ran three times for 24 yards before giving way to Bailey Zappe. In the wake of that contest, coach Bill Belichick declined to confirm the team's starter this week, but after taking the bulk of the Patriots' first-team signal-caller reps in practice Wednesday, Jones is in line to get the nod versus New York.
Oct 26, 2022
Slated to draw Week 8 start
Jones took about 90 percent of the Patriots' first-team QB reps at practice Wednesday and is in line to start Sunday against the Jets, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Though coach Bill Belichick has thus far declined to confirm the team's Week 8 starter, it looks like Jones is slated to retain the assignment, with Bailey Zappe thus on track to open Sunday's contest as the Patriots' No. 2 signal caller. Jones has been working his way back from an ankle injury, so there's still a decent chance his name will appear on Wednesday's injury report.
Oct 25, 2022
Week 8 QB plans TBD
Following Monday's 33-14 loss to Bears in which Jones was pulled after three series, coach Bill Belichick declined to confirm a starting QB for the Patriots' Week 8 game against the Jets, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports.
ANALYSIS
In his return from a three-game absence, Jones completed three of his six passes for 13 yards and a pick and ran three times for 24 yards before giving way to Bailey Zappe. The report indicates that the Patriots planned to play both QBs on Monday, with Jones' recovery from a high ankle sprain factoring into that approach. Meanwhile, Belichick suggested that the 2021 first-rounder would have returned to the contest in the second half had the score been closer. Look for added context regarding the situation to arrive via practice reports this coming week, in terms of Jones' participation level and how the team's signal-caller reps are handled. In any case, until there's added clarity here, Jones looks like a risky fantasy option ahead of Sunday's 1:00 ET kickoff against the 5-2 Jets.
Oct 24, 2022
Benched early in loss
Jones completed three of his six passes for 13 yards and an interception in Monday's 33-14 loss to the Bears. He added three rushes for 24 yards.
ANALYSIS
Jones returned from a three-game absence caused by a high-ankle sprain and got off to a lackluster start. He was ultimately benched after throwing an interception deep in Bears' territory early in the second quarter. Bailey Zappe entered in his place and immediately led the Patriots' offense to two scoring drives, though he cooled down quite a bit across the final two quarters of the game. Jones managed to hold onto his starting role while rehabbing his high ankle sprain, but there may now be a true quarterback controversy in New England. At a minimum, it's unclear whether Jones or Zappe will get the call as the starter in a pivotal Week 8 matchup against the Jets.
Oct 24, 2022
Slated to start Monday
Coach Bill Belichick confirmed that Jones (ankle) is slated to start Monday night's game against the Bears, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones is thus back as the Patriots' starter following a three-game absence due to an ankle injury, though Evan Lazar of the team's official site relays that there has been some speculation backup Bailey Zappe could also potentially take some snaps in the contest. In any case, those who waited things out on Jones all the way up to Monday's kickoff are slated get some level of Week 7 fantasy production from the 2021 first-rounder.
Oct 24, 2022
Suits up Monday
Jones (ankle) is listed as active for Monday night's game against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Per Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, Jones, who has missed the Patriots' last three games due to a high-ankle sprain, is back in uniform and expected to start Monday's contest, with Bailey Zappe on hand in the event that he suffers any in-game setbacks in his return to action. In that context, Jones profiles as a fantasy lineup option for those who waited things out regarding his Week 7 status, though it remains to be seen how pass-heavy the team will be inclined to go in the contest, with RBs Damien Harris (who didn't play in Week 6) and Rhamondre Stevenson both available versus Chicago.
Oct 24, 2022
On track to suit up Monday
With Garrett Gilbert not elevated from the practice squad ahead of Monday night's game against the Bears, Jones and Bailey Zappe are in line to be on the Patriots' Week 7 game-day roster, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that at this stage the Patriots haven't announced a starting QB for the contest, but Jones is expected to play. That said, Reiss suggests that "the possibility Zappe gets snaps can't be dismissed" either. In any case, official confirmation of Jones' availability versus Chicago will be confirmed once New England's inactives are announced ahead of Monday's 8:15 ET kickoff.
Oct 23, 2022
Expected to start Monday
Jones (ankle) is expected to start Monday night's game against the Bears, barring a setback, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones has missed the Patriots' last three games due to a high-ankle sprain, but it looks like he's in line to suit up Monday, in the absence of any pre-game setbacks. Official confirmation of his Week 7 status won't arrive until the team's inactives are posted ahead of Monday's 8:15 ET kickoff, so ideally those considering Jones in fantasy lineups would have Bailey Zappe or Chicago's Justin Fields available as potential replacements.
Oct 23, 2022
Trending toward return Monday
Both Mike Reiss of ESPN and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network indicate that the signs point toward Jones (ankle/questionable) returning to action Monday night against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Per Rapoport, Jones took the bulk of first-team QB reps in Saturday's practice, which indicates that the 2021 first-rounder is trending toward rejoining the lineup following a three-game absence due to a high-ankle sprain. Given the Patriots' 8:15 ET kickoff Monday, there's an element of risk in relying on Jones in Week 7 fantasy lineups, a context that leaves just backup Bailey Zappe and Chicago's Justin Fields as potential replacements.
Oct 23, 2022
Takes first-team reps
Jones (ankle), who is listed a questionable for Monday night's game against the Bears, took the bulk of the first-team reps in Saturday's practice, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones has missed the Patriots' last three games with a high left ankle sprain. This report would seem to indicate he will start Monday's game, but his status is still uncertain. New England's starting quarterback may not be known until kickoff with Bailey Zappe set to start if Jones is out again.
Oct 22, 2022
Listed as questionable for Monday
Jones (ankle) is listed a questionable for Monday night's game against the Bears after practicing in a limited fashion this week.
ANALYSIS
Per Mike Reiss of ESPN, Jones -- who has missed the Patriots' last three games with a high left ankle sprain -- has been progressing toward a possible return to action Monday night, with previous reports having suggested that Jones expects to be available. Ideally, further context with regard to his Week 7 status will surface ahead of the first wave of games Sunday, considering New England's 8:15 ET kickoff Monday. If Jones ends up not being cleared to play, Bailey Zappe would be in line to face Chicago.
Oct 21, 2022
Another limited practice
Jones (ankle) remained limited at practice Friday.
ANALYSIS
Following back-to-back limited practices, Jones appears to be trending in the right direction ahead of Monday night's game against the Bears, though it seems likely the QB will approach the contest with an official 'questionable' designation. Per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, when asked if he'd be back this week after missing three games, Jones replied "I think I'm doing well. Just trying to get better and get my treatment. Day by day." In the event that Jones doesn't return for Monday's contest, fellow signal caller Bailey Zappe would be in line to face Chicago.
Oct 20, 2022
Limited at practice Thursday
Jones (ankle) was limited at practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Per Chad Graff of The Athletic, Jones appeared to be moving around well at the start of Thursday's practice. At this stage, Jones seems to be trending toward a return to action Monday night against the Bears barring any setbacks, but it's still plausible that he'll approach the contest officially listed as 'questionable'.
Oct 20, 2022
Trending toward Week 7 return
Jones (ankle) expects to be available for Monday night's game against the Bears, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones, who has missed the Patriots' the past three games with a high left ankle sprain, appears to be trending in the right direction ahead of Week 7 action, with the report noting that the QB still has to clear a final hurdle at practice this week in order to return to action. Though coach Bill Belichick hasn't outlined the team's plans once Jones is healthy enough to play, Jeff Howe of The Athletic indicates that the signal-caller is on track to return as New England's starter at that juncture, while Bailey Zappe -- who has helmed two straight wins -- would then be in line to return to backup duty.
Oct 16, 2022
Inactive Sunday
Jones (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Browns.
ANALYSIS
With Jones, who was able to practice in a limited fashion this past week, out for a third consecutive game, Bailey Zappe is slated to make his second straight start, backed up by Garrett Gilbert. Jones' next chance to suit up will thus arrive a week from Monday when the Patriots host the Bears in Week 7.
Oct 15, 2022
Not likely against Browns
Jones (ankle), officially listed as questionable, is unlikely to play Sunday against the Browns, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones practiced in limited fashion throughout the week and is somewhat surprisingly considered questionable for Sunday's game. He'll test out his ankle in pregame warmups, but barring a significant surprise, he'll be set for another absence. Bailey Zappe will serve as the starting quarterback assuming Jones is out.
Oct 15, 2022
Sunday status TBD
Jones (ankle) remains listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Browns, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The Patriots ruled out cornerback Jonathan Jones (ankle) and wide receiver Nelson Agholor (hamstring) on Saturday, but Lazar indicates that Mac Jones is making the trip to Cleveland and thus could potentially suit up Sunday after missing his team's last two games. Added context regarding the QB's Week 6 status should arrive in the hours ahead of New England's 1:00 ET kickoff, but if Jones ends up being deemed out, Bailey Zappe would be in line to draw his second straight start.
Oct 14, 2022
Officially questionable for Week 6
Jones (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game game Browns after practicing in a limited capacity this week, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
After sitting out the Patriots' last two games due to a high-ankle sprain, Jones has a chance to return to action this weekend, but if the Patriots elect to play it safe with their top QB, Bailey Zappe would get the starting nod Sunday. Look for added context with regard to Jones' Week 6 status to arrive no later than Saturday night/Sunday morning when national reporters like Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport provide their weekly pre-game updates.
Oct 14, 2022
Sunday status TBD
Coach Bill Belichick noted Friday that Jones (ankle) did more at practice this Thursday than he did last Thursday, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, Belichick indicated that the Patriots plan to evaluate Jones Saturday to see how the QB feels after three days of practice. Friday's final injury report will add a layer of context with regard to Jones' chances of suiting up Sunday against the Browns, but he seems to be trending toward being listed as 'questionable' for the contest.
Oct 13, 2022
Still limited at practice
Jones (ankle) remained limited at practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Jones has now logged five straight limited practice sessions, as he works his way back from a high-ankle sprain. Per Zack Cox of NESN.com, the QB looked more mobile at Thursday's practice than he did last week, which suggests that he has a chance to suit up Sunday against the Browns. Friday's final injury report will add further context to Jones' Week 6 status, but if he ends up being held out this weekend, Bailey Zappe would be in line for his second straight start.
Oct 12, 2022
Still limited at practice
Jones (ankle) remained limited at practice Wednesday, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones, who continues to work his way back from a high ankle sprain that has caused him to miss the Patriots' last two games, has now logged four straight limited practices, but the QB's status for this Sunday's game against the Browns has yet to be clarified. Per Michael Giardi of NFL Network, the swelling in Jones' ankle has decreased, but if the 2021 first-rounder does give it a go this weekend, he could be dealing some instability in his ankle. If New England elects to play it safe with Jones, however, Bailey Zappe would be in line for another start after helming team's 29-0 win over the Lions in Week 5.
Oct 9, 2022
Inactive Sunday
Jones (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Lions.
ANALYSIS
With Jones (who practiced in a limited fashion this past week) out for the second straight game and Brian Hoyer (concussion) on IR, Bailey Zappe is slated to make his first career NFL regular season start, backed up by Garrett Gilbert. Jones, who has reportedly been dealing with a left high ankle sprain, will thus target a potential return to action next Sunday against the Browns.
Oct 9, 2022
Not expected to face Lions
Jones (ankle) is not expected to suit up for Sunday's game against the Lions, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones is officially listed as doubtful for Sunday's contest, so it won't come as much of a surprise to fantasy managers if his inactive status is indeed confirmed prior to the 1:00 p.m. E.T. kickoff. Rookie Bailey Zappe will stand to draw his first NFL start if Jones can't go, and Garrett Gilbert has been activated from the practice squad to handle backup duties.
Oct 7, 2022
Listed as doubtful for Sunday
Jones (ankle) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Lions after being limited at practice this week.
ANALYSIS
Though the Patriots haven't totally ruled Jones out for Sunday's game, the doubtful designation signals that Bailey Zappe is expected to be the team's starting QB this weekend. At this stage, it seems likely that Garrett Gilbert will be elevated from the team's practice squad ahead of Week 5 action, and barring major improvement in short order, Jones' ankle injury appears poised to sideline him for a second straight week.
Oct 6, 2022
Remains limited at practice
Jones (ankle) remainedlimited at practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Back-to-back limited sessions offer hope that Jones could possibly start Sunday's game against the Lions, but at this stage such an outcome is far from a lock, with Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald noting earlier Thursday that Jones was still walking with a limp during practice due to his ankle injury. With Brian Hoyer (concussion) on IR, Bailey Zappe now profiles as the Patriots' No. 2 QB and would fill in as the team's starter this weekend if Jones is unavailable to play versus Detroit.
Oct 5, 2022
Returns to limited practice
Jones (ankle) was listed as a limited practice participant Wednesday, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
That's a step in the right direction for Jones after he didn't participate at all last week before sitting out the Patriots' loss to the Packers this past Sunday. While Jones was able to participate in what Mike Reiss of ESPN.com described as a scaled-back practice, Brian Hoyer (concussion) was sidelined Wednesday. For now, it's still unclear if Jones will be able to play this weekend against Detroit and if neither he or Hoyer are available, Bailey Zappe would be in line to get the team's Week 5 starting nod.
Oct 5, 2022
On the field Wednesday
Jones (ankle) was present for Wednesday's practice, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Reiss, Jones, who is dealing with a high ankle sprain, "had more zip on the ball, and stepped into throws more than he did last Friday." It remains to be seen though how the Patriots list the participation level of the QB, who sat out this past Sunday's loss to the Packers. At this stage, Jones' status for this weekend's game against the Lions is unclear, as is the case with fellow signal caller Brian Hoyer (concussion), who wasn't spotted at Wednesday's session.
Sep 30, 2022
Ruled out for Week 4
Jones (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Though Jones was spotted on the field Friday, he was subsequently listed a non-participant at practice and officially ruled out by the team. With Jones unavailable this weekend, Brian Hoyer will draw the start at QB for New England on Sunday. For his part, Jones' next chance to suit up will arrive in Week 5 versus Detroit.
Sep 30, 2022
On the field Friday
Jones (ankle) was present for the start of Friday's practice, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Reiss adds that during the media-access portion of the session, Jones didn't move around much on his injured left ankle. It remains to be seen how the Patriots list Jones' participation level, but the QB's presence on the field Friday supports the notion there might be some chance he could play through what's been reported as a high ankle sprain. Either way, Friday's upcoming injury report will add a layer of context regarding Jones' chances of being available for Sunday's 4:25 ET contest against the Packers.
Sep 29, 2022
Not spotted at practice
Jones (ankle) wasn't spotted during the media-access portion of Thursday's practice, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Jones, who didn't practice Wednesday, is reportedly dealing with a high ankle sprain, per Mike Reiss of ESPN, at this stage the QB isn't counting himself out for Sunday's game against the Packers, Michael Giardi of NFL Network reports. If Jones ends up being ruled out for the contest, however, Brian Hoyer would draw the start at QB for New England versus Green Bay in Week 4.
Sep 29, 2022
Thinks he has a chance to play Sunday
Jones (ankle), who didn't practice Wednesday, believes that he has a chance to play Sunday against the Packers, Michael Giardi of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen if Jones will be able to practice in any capacity Thursday, but Giardi indicates that the QB is participating in game planning ahead of Sunday's contest. Per Mike Reiss of ESPN, Jones suffered a high ankle sprain versus the Ravens in Week 3, while coach Bill Belichick has made a point of saying that the Patriots are taking it "day-by-day" with their Week 4 signal-caller plans.
Sep 28, 2022
Not practicing Wednesday
Jones (ankle) wasn't spotted at practice Wednesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Jones reportedly dealing with a high ankle sprain, his absence from practice is no surprise. In his absence, Brian Hoyer and Bailey Zappe are slated to handle the Patriots' QB reps at practice. Though the team may not confirm Jones' Week 4 status until Friday's final injury report, it doesn't seem likely that he'll be available this weekend against the Packers. If the 2021 first-rounder is indeed ruled out, Hoyer would draw the start Sunday.
Sep 28, 2022
Not expected to practice
Coach Bill Belichick indicated that Jones "probably won't practice" Wednesday, but added that the QB has "made a lot of progress" since reportedly suffering a high ankle sprain this past Sunday, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
At this point it doesn't seem likely that Jones will be able to play this weekend against the Packers, but for now at least the team hasn't ruled out such a possibility. Per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, Belichick did confirm Wednesday that if Jones is unavailable versus Green Bay in Week 4, Brian Hoyer would start at QB in his place.
Sep 26, 2022
Surgery, DNPs possible
Jones may require surgery on the high-ankle sprain that he sustained Sunday against the Ravens and likely is slated for a multi-game absence, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
As was believed to be the case in the aftermath of Week 3 action, Jones indeed has been diagnosed with a left high-ankle sprain after undergoing an MRI on Monday. Assuming Jones has to sit out Sunday at Green Bay and beyond, Brian Hoyer is in line to direct the Patriots offense in the meantime, with rookie fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe available to serve as the team's backup quarterback.
Sep 26, 2022
High-ankle sprain confirmed
Jones suffered a left high-ankle sprain during Sunday's loss to the Ravens, further tests confirmed Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Patriots haven't yet offered an official recovery timetable for the second-year quarterback, but Jones doesn't seem like a realistic candidate to suit up Week 4 at this point. New England reportedly hopes that Jones won't require surgery, which would help his chances of returning later this season, but for now Brian Hoyer seems set to draw the start versus Green Bay in Week 4. The Patriots also have rookie fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe on hand to act as Hoyer's backup.
Sep 25, 2022
Likely has high ankle sprain
Jones is believed to have suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday's 37-26 loss to the Ravens, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
If Jones' MRI on Monday reveals a high ankle sprain as expected, the second-year quarterback would likely face a multi-week absence. Brian Hoyer would start in Week 4 against the Packers if Jones is unable to play, while rookie fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe would likely slot in as the backup.
Sep 25, 2022
To undergo MRI on Monday
Jones is slated for an MRI on Monday on the ankle that he injured during Sunday's 37-26 loss to the Ravens, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
While X-rays were returned negative after the game, there's concern that Jones picked up a high-ankle sprain or, at the very least, some sort of tendon or ligament damage, according to Michael Giardi of NFL Network. Jones had a mediocre Week 3 performance, completing 22 of 32 passes for 321 yards and three interceptions to go with five carries for 31 yards and one touchdown. If Jones is forced to miss any time, Brian Hoyer is next in line to take over the Patriots offense.
Sep 25, 2022
Dealing with ankle injury
X-Rays on Jones' ankle following Sunday's 37-26 loss to the Ravens, were negative, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
That said, the QB's ankle will continue to be evaluated, so Jones' status for next Sunday's game against the Packers will be worth monitoring. If he's forced to miss practice reps this coming week, Brian Hoyer would be next in line to handle New England's signal-caller reps.
Sep 25, 2022
Dealing with leg injury
Jones, who completed 22 of 32 passes for 321 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions in the Patriots' 37-26 loss to the Ravens on Sunday, sustained a leg injury late in the contest, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones suffered the injury on his third and final interception of the day, limping off the field after the play was over. The second-year signal-caller generated a season-high yardage figure in the loss, and he's now posted an ugly 2:5 TD:INT through three contests. With his health now in question in the immediate aftermath of Sunday's defeat, Jones' status for a Week 4 road matchup against the Packers figures to be firmly up in the air for at least the early portion of the week.
Sep 18, 2022
Good enough to win
Jones completed 21 of 35 pass attempts for 252 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Pittsburgh on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The Patriots were able to sneak out with a 17-14 win in the road matchup, and Jones could have done worse. It's encouraging that he coaxed big games out of Nelson Agholor (six catches for 110 yards and one touchdown on six targets) and Jakobi Meyers (nine catches for 95 yards on 13 targets), but the Patriots offense still seems short of where they'd like it to be. With a 1-1 record Jones will face the Ravens at home in Week 3.
Sep 16, 2022
Cleared for Week 2 action
Jones (back/illness) doesn't carry an injury designation ahead of Sunday's game against the Steelers after practicing fully Friday, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones -- who had been dealing with a back issue coming out of Week 1 action -- practiced fully Wednesday, before sitting out Thursday's session due to an illness. Following his full participation Friday, the second-year QB -- who completed 21 of 30 passes for 213 yards, one touchdown and one interception in last Sunday's 20-7 loss to Miami -- now is poised to face a Steelers defense that racked up four picks and seven sacks in a 23-20 overtime win over Joe Burrow and the Bengals in Week 1.
Sep 16, 2022
Returns to practice
Jones (illness) was present for practice Friday, Zack Cox of NESN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After participating fully in Wednesday's practice, Jones -- who had been dealing with a back issue -- sat out Thursday's session, but his return to the field Friday has him trending toward being available Sunday against the Steelers. The Patriots' upcoming injury report will reveal whether the QB heads into the weekend listed as questionable or minus a Week 2 designation.
Sep 15, 2022
Misses practice Thursday
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network indicates that Jones (illness) -- who is not practicing Thursday -- is believed to be dealing with an upset stomach.
ANALYSIS
The report suggests that the QB's illness in not thought to be COVID-related, but Jones' status is nonetheless worth monitoring closely in advance of Sunday's contest against the Steelers. A return to the field Friday, in any capacity, would put Jones back on track to be available for Week 2 action.
Sep 15, 2022
Slated to miss practice
Jones (illness) isn't in line to practice Thursday, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
After participating fully Wednesday, Jones -- who had been dealing with a back issue -- is now slated to miss practice Thursday. As a result, the signal caller's status will now need to be monitored ahead of Sunday's game against the Steelers. In his absence, Brian Hoyer and Bailey Zappe are on hand to handle the Patriots' QB reps in practice.
Sep 14, 2022
Practices fully Wednesday
Jones (back) practiced fully Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Jones experienced back spasms following Sunday's season-opening 20-7 loss to the Dolphins, but with the QB able to participate in Wednesday's practice fully, he's now on track to start this weekend's game against Pittsburgh. In Week 1, Jones completed 21 of 30 passes for 213 yards, one touchdown and one interception versus Miami, and he's now set to face a Steelers defense that racked up four picks and seven sacks in a 23-20 overtime win over Joe Burrow and the Bengals in the team's season opener.
Sep 14, 2022
At practice Wednesday
Jones (back) was present for Wednesday's practice, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Mike Reiss of ESPN, Jones experienced back spasms following Sunday's season-opening loss to the Dolphins, but the QB's presence at practice Wednesday bodes well for his chances of starting this weekend's game against the Steelers. It remains to be seen, however, whether the Patriots deem Jones a limited or full participant on their upcoming injury report.
Sep 13, 2022
Continues to improve
Jones (back) continues to improve and is doing everything he needs to in order to play Sunday against Pittsburgh, Michael Giardi of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones was plagued by back spasms late in the season-opening loss to Miami, but he appears to have a good shot at suiting up in Week 2. Wednesday's practice report will likely shed more light on the situation, but a final decision may not come until closer to Sunday. If he's unable to play, the Patriots have veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Bailey Zappe as potential replacements.
Sep 12, 2022
X-rays negative, could play Week 2
Jones (back) is believed to be dealing with spasms and received negative X-ray results Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones appears to have a shot at suiting up for Sunday's road matchup against the Steelers, but the final word on his status will likely come down to what the second-year quarterback can do in practice. Whatever the case, it's a positive development for New England that Jones has dodged a major injury. The team has veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Bailey Zappe waiting in the wings if Jones needs to spend any amount of time on the sidelines.
Sep 11, 2022
Undergoes X-Rays on back
X-Rays that Jones underwent on his back after Sunday's loss to the Dolphins came back negative, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that the QB will be evaluated further when the Patriots get back to Foxborough, but for now consider Jones day-to-day ahead of next Sunday's game against the Steelers. If he misses any practice time, veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Bailey Zappe are next up for the team's signal-caller reps.
Sep 11, 2022
Stops for X-rays after Week 1 loss
Jones completed 21 of 30 passes for 213 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 20-7 loss to Miami. He also rushed twice for no gain and lost a fumble. After the game, Jones stopped by the X-ray room, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones capped New England's first possession with an interception before having his second-quarter fumble returned for a Miami touchdown. The Patriots took a 17-0 deficit into the locker room, but Jones' six-yard touchdown pass to Ty Montgomery capped a 92-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter to cut Miami's lead to 10. That was all the offense New England could muster, though. Despite glowing offseason reviews from within the Patriots organization, Jones didn't show much progress from his rookie campaign in his first action of 2022, perhaps hindered by New England's lack of experienced coaches on the offensive side of the ball. Assuming Jones is healthy, the 2021 first-round pick will look to bounce back in Week 2 against a Steelers defense that turned Joe Burrow over five times in its season opener.
Aug 26, 2022
Sharp in preseason finale
Jones completed nine of 13 passes for 71 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the Patriots' 23-6 preseason loss to the Raiders on Friday night. He also rushed once for 13 yards.
ANALYSIS
Jones was expected to see minimal playing time, but he ended up on the field for the Patriots' first four drives. The second-year signal-caller and his teammates didn't get much done on the first three possessions -- which likely played a part in Jones coming back out for a fourth -- but he was able to help lead an 11-play, 46-yard march that culminated in a field goal on his final series of the game. Jones will now turn his attention to a big Week 1 AFC East showdown against the Dolphins on the road Sept. 11.
Aug 26, 2022
Minimal snaps expected Friday
Mike Reiss of ESPN.com notes that the expectation is for Jones and most of the Patriots' top players to see minimal action in Friday's preseason finale against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Per Reiss, Jones and co. got in some good work during a pair of joint practices with the Raiders this week, so it seems likely that key starters who suit up Friday will log limited snaps. In that context, rookie QB Bailey Zappe is a candidate to see extended action in New England's exhibition finale.
Aug 19, 2022
Leads scoring drive Friday
Jones completed four of eight passes for 61 yards and gained seven yards on his only carry in Friday's preseason game against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
The second-year quarterback handled the first three possessions for the Patriots before calling it a night, and while Jones didn't post noteworthy numbers, he did lead the offense on an 81-yard drive that culminated in a Ty Montgomery TD plunge. Per Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, coach Bill Belichick indicated after the game all his healthy starters would be available for New England's preseason finale next week against the Raiders, so Jones will likely see a little more action to prepare for Week 1.
Aug 19, 2022
Likely playing Friday
Jones told reporters he expects to play in Friday's preseason game against Carolina, Mark Daniels of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
This presumably means the Patriots are playing most of their starters, though perhaps not the entire lineup. They return every starter on offense from last year besides G Shaq Mason, who was traded to Tampa and promptly replaced back in New England by first-round pick Cole Strange. Apart from that, the big offseason changes were a trade for WR DeVante Parker and the loss of former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, with the Patriots now leaning on some combination of Matt Patricia, Joe Judge and Bill Belichick for play calling.
Aug 11, 2022
Not expected to play Thursday
Jones isn't expected to play in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Giants, Mike Reiss and Dan Graziano of ESPN report.
ANALYSIS
The report suggests that most of New England's starters aren't expected to take the field Thursday, and if that's the case look for Jones to get some action in versus Carolina on Aug. 19. The Patriots and Panthers have joint practices next week. Versus the Giants, look for the Patriots to focus on evaluating rookies and backups vying for roster spots, which likely sets the stage for 2022 fourth-rounder Bailey Zappe to see plenty of action behind veteran QB Brian Hoyer on Thursday.
Aug 10, 2022
Could sit Thursday
ESPN's Mike Reiss notes that based on how Tuesday's practice unfolded, he'd be surprised if Jones plays in Thursday's preseason opener against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen if the Patriots make any sort of announcement on that front, but Reiss suggests that if Jones is held out of the contest, rookie Bailey Zappe "should see plenty of work behind Brian Hoyer" on Thursday.
Jul 28, 2022
Draws praise from his head coach
Coach Bill Belichick noted Tuesday that he has observed "dramatic improvement" from Jones, who is approaching his second campaign as a pro, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports. "He did a great job last year, but he's starting from a much, much higher point this year from where he started last year," Belichick noted of the 2021 first-rounder.
ANALYSIS
After overtaking veteran signal caller Cam Newton ahead of Week 1 last year, Jones completed 352 of his 521 passing attempts for 3,801 yards, with 22 TDs and 13 interceptions. In addition to having a full season as an NFL starter under his belt, Jones has, according to Belichick, made strides in terms of his "physical work and conditioning, mechanics, footwork, understanding of our offense [and] opponent defenses." While Jones figures to helm a New England attack fueled by the RB duo of Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson, team's offseason trade for DeVante Parker and the drafting of speedy Tyquan Thornton has added to a solid array of pass catching targets that also includes returning WRs Jakobi Meyers, Kendrick Bourne, as well as tight ends Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith. With that in mind, there's room for Jones to improve as a fantasy producer in 2022, but his upside on that front hinges in large part upon the team's approach on offense now that long-time coordinator Josh McDaniels has moved on to coach t

Impresses with his leadership
As Jones approaches his second NFL season, the quarterback's increased leadership has caught the eye of his teammates, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
"It's just at another level now," receiver Kendrick Bourne noted of the leadership Jones has displayed this offseason. "He's more comfortable, more confident. He knows what's going on, and the muscle memory is there [from having gone through it] -- OTAs, then camp, and the season. He's just more locked in, more secure in his position." Jones, who Reiss indicates is a candidate become a team captain in advance of Week 1, is also noticeably thinner these days, due to a changed diet, Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reports. Meanwhile, the 2021 first-rounder hopes to add some muscle to to his 6-3 frame, in order to better withstand hits as well as improve his arm strength. This coming season, Jones -- who turns 24 in September -- will continue to helm an attack that figures to be fueled by the RB duo of Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson, but the Patriots' offseason trade for DeVante Parker and the drafting of speedy Tyquan Thornton, does add to the team's a solid array of passing targets. There's definit

Overmatched in playoff loss
Jones completed 24 of 38 passes for 232 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Saturday's 47-17 loss to Buffalo.
ANALYSIS
Though New England was overmatched in nearly all aspects of its wild-card matchup, Jones was unable to get the offense moving while the game remained within reach. His play during the first offensive possession was an exception, as he found Hunter Henry for a 30-yard completion and also scrambled for a 16-yard gain. However, he was picked off by Micah Hyde in the end zone to end the rally. After that, positive plays were few and far between, as Jones ended the first half with only 10 completions for 106 yards. He managed to pad his stat line with a pair of touchdown passes to Kendrick Bourne with the Patriots down by at least three scores in the second half. Despite the loss, Jones showed promise during his rookie season and will be back under center to lead the New England offense for the 2022 campaign.

Solid in Sunday's loss
Jones completed 20 of 30 passes for 261 yards and a touchdown with an interception in Sunday's 33-24 loss to the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
The rookie had a shaky start to the game, tossing a pick-six to Xavien Howard midway through the first quarter, but Jones shook it off and rallied his team from an early 14-point deficit to get the Patriots within a field goal late in the fourth, before the Dolphins scored on a fumble return on New England's final possession. Jones wraps up an impressive rookie campaign with a 67.6 percent completion rate, 22:13 TD:INT and 3,801 passing yards, and he'll lead the Pats into the wild-card round as they face AFC East rivals the Bills on Saturday.

Major bounce-back effort in rout
Jones completed 22 of 30 passes for 227 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Patriots' 50-10 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. He also rushed twice for 12 yards.
ANALYSIS
Jones took advantage of a highly favorable matchup to exorcise some recent demons, posting his first interception-free effort in the last three games. The rookie had completed under 60.0 percent of his throws in each of the last two contests as well, but he was accurate early and often Sunday on the way to helping lead three first-half scoring drives. Jones spread the wealth on his touchdown throws, getting little-used Kristian Wilkerson into the end zone from six and 20 yards out and also connecting with the much more familiar Jakobi Meyers for a four-yard scoring toss just before halftime. The strong performance was undoubtedly a confidence builder for Jones ahead of the postseason, one he'll look to build on against the Dolphins in a Week 18 road clash.

Struggles continue in loss to Bills
Jones completed 14 of 32 passes for 145 yards and two interceptions in Sunday's 33-21 loss to the Bills. He added 33 yards on six rushing attempts.
ANALYSIS
Jones eclipsed the 19 passing yards he mustered against the Bills earlier this month, but the rookie wasn't much better in this one. He finished the first half just 5-for-13 with 47 yards and an interception, as the Patriots trailed 17-7 heading into the locker room. Damien Harris kept the team in it with three rushing touchdowns, but Jones continued to struggle through the air in the second half, fittingly snuffing out New England's slim comeback hopes with another interception on his final pass of the game. Jones has been a competent game manager most weeks while working in an ideal situation for a rookie quarterback, but he has struggled when called upon to play catch-up rather than nurse a lead. Luckily for Jones, the Patriots are unlikely to fall behind in Week 17 against the 2-13 Jaguars.
Dec 18, 2021
Erratic in Saturday's loss
Jones completed 26 of 45 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in Saturday's 27-17 loss to the Colts. He also gained 12 yards on his lone rush.
ANALYSIS
The Patriots found themselves in a 17-0 hole at halftime, forcing Jones to air it out a lot more than usual. As a result, the rookie attempted at least 40 passes for only the third time this season and came within a yard of his third career 300-yard game. He also made some rookie mistakes however, including his first career red-zone INT. Jones has now eclipsed 3,000 passing yards on the year, and he'll take a solid 18:10 TD:INT into a Week 16 rematch with the Bills that could well wind up determining the AFC East champion.

Full practice Tuesday
Updating a previous report, Jones (thumb) was a full practice participant Tuesday, per Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com.
ANALYSIS
Initially, Jones wasn't listed on the Pats' first Week 15 injury report, only to be added later as limited due to a left thumb issue. But his activity level since has been adjusted to all of it Tuesday. With his health not in question, Jones will continue to prepare uninhibited for Saturday's contest at Indianapolis.
Dec 14, 2021
Tending to thumb injury
Jones was limited at Tuesday's practice due to an injury to his left thumb, Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones was a late addition to the Patriots' initial practice report of Week 15 prep. Considering he fit in some activity and the issue is to his non-throwing hand, he likely isn't in danger of sitting out Saturday at Indianapolis. Still, Jones' status will be one to watch to ensure that he's available this weekend.

Throws three passes in win
Jones completed two of three passes for 19 yards in Monday night's 14-10 win over the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Jones entered Monday coming off a career-high 310 passing yards last week, but extremely windy conditions in Buffalo resulted in New England running the ball almost every play. In fact, Jones began the fourth quarter with just one attempt, then threw passes on back-to-back plays on the Pats' second-last drive. Despite being on handoff duty basically all night, Jones did enough to help clinch a seventh straight victory, sending him into the bye week on a positive note. He'll surely assume a more conventional quarterback role playing indoors versus the Colts in Week 15.
Nov 28, 2021
Career-high yardage total in win
Jones completed 23 of 32 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 36-13 win over the Titans. He also rushed twice for 11 yards.
ANALYSIS
Jones set a new career high in passing yards, topping his Week 7 total by three. The rookie quarterback capped New England's first drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Bourne, then added a 41-yard touchdown to Bourne in the third, improving his TD:INT to 16:8. Between Jones' strong play and a dominant defense, the Patriots have quietly emerged as contenders in the AFC, as they'll bring an 8-4 record into a pivotal Week 13 trip to Buffalo.
Nov 18, 2021
Efficient, accurate in win
Jones completed 22 of 26 passes for 207 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Patriots' 25-0 win over the Falcons on Thursday night. He also netted one yard on six rushes.
ANALYSIS
The rookie was near perfect in the convincing win, and he impressively connected with nine different pass catchers along the way. Jones kick-started the Patriots offense by capping off a seven-play, 76-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown throw to Nelson Agholor early in the second quarter, extending his touchdown streak to three games in the process. Jones' command of the offense this early in his career continues to pay off for fantasy managers in all formats, and his next chance to build on what is now a tally of 2,540 passing yards and a 14:8 TD:INT will come in a Week 12 showdown against the Titans a week from Sunday.
Nov 14, 2021
Highly effective in victory
Jones completed 19 of 23 pass attempts for 198 yards and three touchdowns against Cleveland on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
This game turned into a laugher in a hurry, but Jones played impressively for the portion of the game that was competitive, and Jones' own play was part of the reason why the Patriots generated such a big lead in the first place. He showed more willingness to attack the defense downfield -- something that was lacking in his earlier starts -- and if Jones can maintain that playmaking aggression then the whole Patriots offense could graduate to the next tier as a group. It might be tough for Jones to look as sharp on a short week against Atlanta on Thursday, but by every measure the Falcons are a more inviting defense than the Browns one Jones just lit up.
Nov 7, 2021
Low usage in victory
Jones completed 12 of 18 pass attempts for 139 yards, a touchdown, an interception and a fumble lost in Sunday's 24-6 win over Carolina.
ANALYSIS
The 18 pass attempts marked the lowest total for Jones this season, as the Patriots' defense (one TD) and rushing attack (39 attempts for 151 yards and a TD) did the heavy lifting against the Panthers. The poised rookie is averaging 237.2 passing yards per game with a 10:7 TD:INT ratio through nine contests. The Patriots lost Rhamondre Stevenson (head) and Damien Harris (head) to injury Sunday, so Jones may be relied upon more heavily against a tough Browns' defense should both backs miss the contest.
Oct 31, 2021
Quiet in win over Bolts
Jones completed 18 of 35 passes for 218 yards in Sunday's 27-24 win over the Chargers. He also gained 10 yards on four carries.
ANALYSIS
The rookie wasn't particularly efficient, but Jones avoided making any mistakes and let the Patriots' defense take control of the game in the second half. It was a big step back from his performance last week against the Jets, and Jones will face a tough matchup in Week 9 against a Panthers defense that just held Matt Ryan under 150 yards.
Oct 24, 2021
First 300-yard game in win
Jones completed 24 of 36 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 54-13 win over the Jets. He added 19 yards on three rushing attempts.
ANALYSIS
Jones once again worked as a caretaker while the running game and defense led the way, but he still topped 300 yards for the first time in his career in this blowout win. Brandon Bolden did most of the work on Jones' first touchdown pass, taking a screen pass to the house from 15 yards out, and Hunter Henry was wide open for a one-yard score to give the Patriots a 31-7 halftime lead. The rookie quarterback will bring a respectable 9:6 TD:INT into New England's Week 8 road tilt against the Chargers.
Oct 17, 2021
Sharp in OT loss
Jones completed 15 of 21 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in Sunday's 35-29 overtime loss to the Cowboys. He also threw a two-point conversion to Jakobi Meyers.
ANALYSIS
The rookie once again rarely misfired, and his one interception came on a throw that tipped off Kendrick Bourne's hands straight to Trevon Diggs for a pick-six late in the fourth quarter of the wild back-and-forth affair. Jones didn't flinch, however, and on the Patriots' very next possession, he tossed a 75-yard TD to Bourne. Jones will head into a Week 7 clash with the Jets sporting a stunning 71.1 percent completion rate, albeit with a less impressive 7.0 YPA and 7:6 TD:INT.
Oct 4, 2021
Strong performance on SNF
Jones completed 31 of 40 pass attempts for 275 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 19-17 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Jones attempted his best Tom Brady impression against the legend himself, actually finishing with a superior performance from a statistical perspective. The rookie did throw another interception -- following his three-pick outing last week -- but he also contributed the first multi-score performance of his young career. Jones' fantasy ceiling remains capped by his playstyle of quick releases and accurate, short passes, but he has also looked like the most NFL-ready quarterback out of all the rookie options this year. Jones does get a tasty matchup against the Texans' woeful defense next week, perhaps giving the young arm some appeal in deeper and DFS formats.
Sep 26, 2021
Three interceptions in loss
Jones completed 30 of 51 pass attempts for 270 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions in Sunday's 28-13 loss to the Saints. He added 28 yards on six carries.
ANALYSIS
Jones finally suffered the poor turnover fate that many of his fellow 2021 draft class quarterbacks have gone through early this season. The rookie's pick-six on the Patriots' first drive of the second half put the Saints up 21-3, pretty much putting the game out of reach and forcing the team to become one-dimensional. Even with the three interceptions, Jones is arguably having the best start out of all of the first-round quarterbacks taken in the draft. He will likely face his toughest test to date when the Patriots take on Tom Brady and the Buccaneers next Sunday.
Sep 19, 2021
Mistake-free in first win
Jones completed 22 of 30 passes for 186 yards in Sunday's 25-6 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Jones was accurate in the first half, completing 17 of 21 passes for 142 yards to guide his team to a 13-3 lead at the break. He wasn't asked to do much after halftime, as the running game and defense led the way to seal the Jones' first NFL win. Jones has proven to be a capable game manager in his first two games, but the Patriots prefer to control the clock with runs and short passes as opposed to pushing the ball downfield. The rookie first-round pick has one touchdown and no interceptions heading into a Week 3 visit from the Saints.
Sep 12, 2021
Looks comfortable in starting role
Jones completed 29 of his 39 pass attempts for 281 yards and one touchdown in Sunday's Week 1 loss to Miami.
ANALYSIS
Jones appeared comfortable in his first regular season start as a professional and completed at least one pass to eight different players. He showed a particular connection with Nelson Agholor, as the pair produced gains of 25 and 21 yards as well as a seven-yard touchdown. Though Jones couldn't earn a victory, he led the Patriots to the red zone for a potential game-winning score late in the fourth quarter before Damien Harris lost a fumble to effectively end the contest. Jones will look to build on this performance in a Week 2 matchup against the Jets.

Wins starting job
Jones will start Week 1 against Miami, while teammate Cam Newton has been released, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones apparently showed enough to not only win the starting job but also push Newton off the roster. With Jarrett Stidham (back) on the PUP list and likely out for at least the first half of the season, 35-year-old Brian Hoyer is the only remaining quarterback behind the rookie out of Alabama. As such, Jones should have a long leash to work through any struggles, especially after splitting reps all summer. He'll starting things off with a home game against the Dolphins in Week 1, followed by a trip to the Meadowlands in Week 2 and then home dates with the Saints (Week 3) and Buccaneers (Week 4).
Aug 30, 2021
Starter not yet named
Coach Bill Belichick noted Sunday that he isn't quite ready to name his Week 1 starting QB between Cam Newton and Jones, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports.
ANALYSIS
To that point, Belichick noted after Sunday's preseason finale that the Patriots "still have a lot of decisions to make." That said, given that Newton started Sunday and played two series, all with New England's starters before Jones took over and saw action deep into the third quarter, all with the backups, it would appear as though the team may be leaning toward rolling with the more experienced Newton early on this season. In that scenario, Jones would begin his pro career in a backup capacity, but the 2021 first-rounder is nonetheless a promising prospect, who will eventually claim New England's starting job. Whether that occurs in the event that Newton is unavailable at some point this season due to injury or COVID protocols, or simply due to the team's coaching staff looking to spark the offense, this will remain a QB situation to monitor even after a Week 1 starter is named.
Aug 29, 2021
Finishes stellar preseason
Jones completed 10 of 14 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 22-20 preseason win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Jones entered the game after Cam Newton led the Patriots to a field goal on their first drive and was intercepted on their second. From there, the rookie first-rounder again proceeded to impress, leading New England to 16 points, including a 17-yard touchdown pass of his own, prior to exiting to start the fourth quarter. With a superb exhibition audition process now complete, it'll be interesting to see whether coach Bill Belichick will name Jones or Newton his starting quarterback ahead of Week 1's matchup against the Dolphins.
Aug 26, 2021
Not as sharp Thursday
Jones took a step back Thursday after his impressive practice Wednesday, working behind Cam Newton in Newton's return to practice, Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Newton took the first snap in every period, but Jones ended up getting more reps in full-team drills. It sounds like both were mediocre, following Wednesday reports about Jones having a dominant practice. Newton is still the favorite for the Week 1 start, but he didn't do himself any favors with the three-day absence due to a misunderstanding of COVID-19 protocols. The Patriots likely will give both QBs playing time in Sunday's preseason game against the Giants.
Aug 25, 2021
Impresses at practice Wednesday
Jones had his best practice showing of the summer during Wednesday's joint session with the Giants, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Per Howe's count, Jones completed 35 of 40 passes against the Giants' starting defense, a roll that included a stretch of 18 consecutive completions. With Cam Newton in the NFL's COVID-19 protocols and logging his third absence in a row, Jones certainly took advantage of the added practice reps, while making a case to be considered as the team's Week 1 starter. Coach Bill Belichick has maintained that Newton -- who could return to the field as soon as Thursday -- is currently is viewed as the Patriots' starting QB, but the combination of his recent absence, coupled with Jones' strong efforts of late suggests that the case may not be closed.
Aug 23, 2021
Set to log first-team reps
Jones is in line to see first-team QB reps at practice through Wednesday, with Cam Newton slated remain away from the team until Thursday due to what's been described by the Patriots as a "misunderstanding" on COVID-19 tests "conducted away from NFL facilities," ESPN's Mike Reiss reports.
ANALYSIS
While Newton will continue to participate virtually in team activities, Jones is in a position to work with New England's starters for the next few days. Reiss relays that coach Bill Belichick reiterated earlier Monday that Newton is currently viewed as the team's starting QB, with the usual caveat that any player's depth chart standing could change if someone performs better than the current starter or if that player isn't available for any reason.
Aug 19, 2021
Impresses again Thursday
Jones completed 13 of 19 passes for 146 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the Patriots' 35-0 preseason win over the Eagles on Thursday night. He also rushed once for three yards.
ANALYSIS
The rookie may not have thrown for any scores, but he helped helm an outstanding 17-play, 91-yard march on his first possession upon entering in the second quarter behind Cam Newton. The ground attack did play an outsized role in that drive, but Jones was also in on second-half 75- and 70-yard scoring drives that culminated in rushing touchdowns. Newton was also sharp during his tenure, so the competition between the two signal-callers presumably will persist in the next week of practices leading up to New England's third preseason tilt on Sunday, Aug. 29 against the Giants.
Aug 17, 2021
Mixes in with first-team offense
Jones saw some work with the first-team offense Tuesday after dominating the backups during Monday's practice and completed 13 of his 14 pass attempts, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones continues to make his mark on the preseason after posting a solid debut in game action last Thursday, completing 13 of his 19 pass attempts for 87 yards against Washington. He's certainly viewed as the long-term solution for New England under center and is trying to push to make that impact felt sooner than later. Unfortunately for him, Cam Newton also had what was reportedly his best practice in a week Tuesday, so Jones' showing didn't really help him make up a ton of ground.
Aug 12, 2021
Extensive action in preseason debut
Jones completed 13 of 19 passes for 87 yards and rushed twice for no gain in Thursday's 22-13 preseason win over Washington. He had no touchdowns or turnovers.
ANALYSIS
After watching Cam Newton lead the offense to a field goal on his second drive, Jones came in and got the same result on the team's third possession, though the rookie would have had a touchdown if Kristian Wilkerson had been able to haul in a pretty deep ball in the end zone. Jones moved the offense well throughout his time in the game, but on a Patriots team without much talent on the outside, Newton's mobility and leadership give him the inside track on the starting quarterback job. Expect Jones to see plenty of action in preseason Week 2 against the Eagles as the Patriots continue to evaluate what they have in the 15th overall pick out of Alabama.
Aug 12, 2021
Expected to see action Thursday
Both Cam Newton and Jones are expected to play in Thursday night's preseason opener against Washington, ESPNs Mike Reiss reports.
ANALYSIS
It's uncertain how much work each of the team's top two QBs will see in the contest, but Reiss notes that given that coach Bill Belichick has previously indicated that Newton is the team's starting quarterback for now, it seems likely he'll take initial snaps Thursday. In any case, this remains a job competition worth monitoring, with Jones still having some time to gain ground, or even supplant Newton in advance of Week 1.
Aug 8, 2021
Bounces back at practice
After struggling some at practice this past Tuesday, Jones bounced back in the Patriots' subsequent two sessions, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports.
ANALYSIS
In the process, Jones' workload increased, while Reiss observed that during the team's two recent full-pads practices that "it sometimes looks like the team is running separate attacks. The threat of (Cam) Newton as a ball carrier with the read-option is prevalent -- and effective at times -- while Jones often looks like he's running the more traditional Patriots passing offense." Thus far, coach Bill Belichick has maintained that he views Newton as New England's current starter, though this is a situation that remains worth monitoring in the coming weeks, given that Jones still has some time to gain ground on on his veteran counterpart in advance of the team's regular-season opener.
Jul 29, 2021
Follows Newton in team drills
Early on in training camp, Jones has followed Cam Newton in team drills, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
For now, Newton sits atop the Patriots' QB depth chart, a notion reinforced by the fact that he's leading off team drills, but Jones will have an opportunity to compete with the veteran signal caller as training camp progresses. Through the New England's first two practices at least, Howe notes that "strictly by performance, the QB battle has been a draw."
Jul 6, 2021
Signs rookie deal
Jones has signed a four-year, $15.6 million contract with the Patriots, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones' deal also includes a fifth-year option. The Alabama product was taken by New England 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft and is slated to compete with returnee Cam Newton for the team's Week 1 starting QB assignment. For now at least, Newton sits atop the Patriots' depth chart after being the first signal caller to log snaps throughout spring drills, per ESPN's Mike Reiss. While Newton holds an edge in terms of experience and mobility, Reiss notes that when Jones "had it going" during OTAs and minicamp, the team's passing game "most closely resembled what it had been for the better part of the past two decades from a timing, rhythm and accuracy standpoint." Whether the rookie is able to overtake Newton prior to the start of the coming season remains to be seen, but this could end up being one of the league's more intriguing training camp job battles this summer.
Jun 28, 2021
Poised to challenge Newton
Michael Giardi of NFL Network suggests that "a legit competition is on tap" this summer between Jones and incumbent starting QB Cam Newton.
ANALYSIS
Citing Newton's uneven 2020 campaign, as well Jones having held his own over the course of the Patriots' OTAs and mandatory minicamp, Giardi believes that the No. 15 overall pick in this year's draft has a chance to push his veteran counterpart in the coming months. That said, the rookie is slated to head into training camp behind Newton on the depth chart and still has some ground to make up if he's to vault into an immediate starting role. For his part, ESPN's Mike Reiss suggests that the Newton/Jones competition "could be one of the NFL's most compelling training camp storylines."
Jun 15, 2021
Follows Newton at practice
Over the last two days of the Patriots' mandatory minicamp, Jones has been following 2020 starter Cam Newton in the team's QB rotation, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports.
ANALYSIS
Also in the team's signal-caller mix are third-year player Jarrett Stidham, as well as veteran Brian Hoyer, but at this stage Newton remains atop the depth chart, while Jones -- the No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft -- is introduced to the Patriots' offensive system. Down the road, Jones figures to push Newton for the top job, but how quickly he'll be in a position to supplant his incumbent counterpart remains to be seen.
Jun 4, 2021
Limps through practice
Jones sported a compression sleeve on his lower right leg during Friday's OTA and was limping between periods, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones was still able to complete the practice session and split reps with Jarrett Stidham under center during the second half of the session after Cam Newton left with a finger injury. The rookie doesn't seem to be dealing with a major issue at the moment but he isn't operating at 100 percent either.
