Efficient in preseason loss
Trubisky completed nine of 13 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 34-25 preseason loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
With Josh Allen held out, Trubisky got the start and played the entire first half, capping his performance with an 11-yard TD toss to Dawson Knox in the second quarter. Trubisky is locked into the No. 2 QB spot for the Bills, a role that afforded him only 26 pass attempts over nine regular-season appearances in 2024, with most of that volume coming in a Week 18 start when nothing was on the line for Buffalo.
Aug 7, 2025
To play a quarter or so Saturday
Bills head coach Sean McDermott said Thursday that Trubisky will open Saturday's preseason game against the Giants with the starters, and that Buffalo's first-team unit will play about a quarter, Matt Parrino of The Syracuse Post-Standard reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky will get an opportunity to work with the first-team unit Saturday while franchise quarterback Josh Allen sits out. The expectation is that Trubisky will see action in all three of the Bills' preseason matchups, with the following two games coming Aug. 17 against the Bears and Aug. 23 versus Tampa Bay, though it's possible Allen gets a chance to suit up in one or both of those contests.
Aug 6, 2025
Competing for backup role
Trubisky and Mike White are in a competition for a backup role that will likely extend throughout the preseason, Lance Lysowski reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky made an appearance in nine games last season for the Bills, backing up quarterback Josh Allen. Though the 30-year-old was ahead of Mike White on the depth chart last season, Trubisky is entering his final season of a two-year, $5.2 million contract, making the ninth-year pro a potential cap casualty if the competition is at all close.
Jan 5, 2025
Tosses Week 18 touchdown
Trubisky completed 15 of 21 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Patriots. He added 12 rushing yards on four carries.
ANALYSIS
Josh Allen played the first snap to keep his consecutive start streak alive before turning things over to Trubisky, who connected with Ray Davis for a two-yard TD in the second quarter. Trubisky then gave way to Mike White midway through the third quarter. It was the first extensive action of the season for either backup QB, and it will likely be their last as Allen will take back the reins of the offense when the Bills host the Broncos in the wild-card round next weekend.
Jan 3, 2025
Likely forced to share
Trubisky's teammate Mike White was signed to the active roster Friday, and coach Sean McDermott said, "We hope we can get him in the game," Alec White of the Bills' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky is a decent fill-in fantasy guy, at least in terms of the wild wackiness of Week 18, but he's likely to cede a few snaps or a series to Josh Allen on the front end so Allen can keep his NFL active consecutive starts streak going. On top of that, the Bills are essentially using this as a preseason game, meaning Trubisky should get a good look from that point, but he may also need to yield a quarter of play or thereabouts to White on the back end of the game. The Bills have the capability of running up points no matter who is out there, especially when you consider their opponent might not mind getting the No. 1 overall pick in April. Just know that comparable options such as Joshua Dobbs or Aidan O'Connell might get a full game this week, while Trubisky will be some degree short.
Dec 31, 2024
Likely to get extended run Week 18
Trubisky is likely to play extensively in Sunday's game at New England, after head coach Sean McDermott said Monday that Josh Allen slated to start at quarterback but will "be out there for a very, very short-lived amount of time," Alec White of the Bills' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bills are locked in as the AFC's No. 2 seed regardless of how Week 18 action plays out, and McDermott hinted that the team will use its regular-season finale as an opportunity to rest some key players ahead of the playoffs while getting more extended evaluations of players on the back end of the roster. The Bills will allow Allen to extend his streak of consecutive starts to 105 games Sunday, but he may only direct the offense for a possession or two before giving way to Trubisky, who has played just 53 snaps all season, mostly at the tail end of blowouts. Though he has played infrequently behind Allen in stints with Buffalo in 2021 and 2024, Trubisky made five appearances (two starts) for Pittsburgh a season ago and completed 67 of 107 pass attempts (62.6 percent) for 632 yards (5.9 YPA), four touchdowns and five interceptions while adding 54 yards and two scores on 16 carries.
Sep 25, 2024
Makes garbage-time cameo
Trubisky completed his lone pass attempt for a three-yard gain and lost a yard on his lone carry in Monday's 47-10 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky directed the Buffalo offense for the final three possessions of the night after starting quarterback Josh Allen guided the Bills to a commanding 27-point lead through the early part of the fourth quarter. He mostly handed the ball off as the Bills ran down the clock, with his lone carry being a kneeldown in the final minute of the quarter. So long as Allen stays healthy throughout the season, Trubisky's playing time will remain limited to the tail end of non-competitive games.
Sep 5, 2024
Resumes practicing in full
Trubisky (knee) practiced in full Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky was limited due to a knee issue Wednesday, but he's upgraded to full participation in time to play without restrictions Week 1. Barring any setbacks, Trubisky now looks fully on track to operate as the No. 2 quarterback behind Josh Allen during Buffalo's regular-season opener against the Cardinals on Sunday.
Sep 4, 2024
Remains uncertain for season opener
Trubisky (knee) will be limited during practice Wednesday, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky is still nursing a knee injury suffered in a mid-August preseason tilt with the Steelers. His ability to participate at some level today should be a step in the right direction; however, head coach Sean McDermott is "not sure" if the North Carolina product will be available Week 1, Maddy Glab of the Bills' official site reports. If Trubisky can't suit up Sunday against the Cardinals, Buffalo will likely be promoting Mike White to the active roster from the practice squad.
Aug 28, 2024
Uncertain for Week 1
Bills general manager Brandon Beane said Wednesday that the status of Trubisky (knee) is uncertain for Week 1, Chris Brown of the Bills Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky is working his way back from a knee injury sustained mid-August in a preseason game against the Steelers, and while he doesn't seem like a candidate to begin the regular season on IR, he's not a lock to be ready for Buffalo's opener against the Cardinals on Sept. 8. As an insurance option behind Josh Allen, the Bills prioritized inking Mike White to the practice squad Tuesday after his release by the Dolphins.
Aug 22, 2024
Could be available for Week 1
During his press conference Thursday, head coach Sean McDermott did not rule out Trubisky (knee) for the Bills' regular-season opener against the Cardinals on Sept. 8, Alec White of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky injured his knee in Saturday's preseason game against the Steelers. Initial reports indicated that the injury would sideline the 2017 first-round quarterback for multiple weeks, but McDermott seemed to indicate Thursday that Trubisky could be ready for Week 1. If not, Ben DiNucci -- who Buffalo signed on Aug. 12 after Shane Beuchele landed on IR with a neck injury -- would serve as the backup quarterback behind Josh Allen to start the season, while Anthony Brown would fill in as the emergency QB.
Aug 19, 2024
Set to miss time
Trubisky (knee) is expected to miss multiple weeks, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky left Saturday's preseason contest in Pittsburgh due to a knee injury, and based on Monday's report, the QB's Week 1 status is unclear. When healthy, Trubisky is slated to be Josh Allen's top backup, but for now Ben DiNucci profles as the Bills' No. 2 signal caller.
Aug 17, 2024
Hurts knee Saturday
Trubisky won't return to Saturday's preseason contest in Pittsburgh due to a knee injury.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his exit in the second quarter, Trubisky completed nine of 13 passes for 86 yards, no touchdowns and one interception and had a one-yard carry. He actually started the game after coach Sean McDermott opted to keep No. 1 QB Josh Allen out due to the slippery nature of the field from rain earlier Saturday, so Ben DiNucci will handle all the reps under center for the remainder of this game.
Aug 11, 2024
Major action in preseason opener
Trubisky completed 10 of 18 passes for 82 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Saturday's preseason loss to the Bears, good for a 67.4 rating. He also rushed three times for 12 yards.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky is the clear No. 2 behind superstar Josh Allen, and he didn't do anything too terribly in this outing to put his spot at any risk. No. 3 quarterback Shane Buechele had a rough game with an interception and a 34.6 rating, so at this point it would be a pretty big shock to see the Bills enter the regular season with anything other than an Allen-Trubisky pecking order. Trubisky also has experience with the Bills dating back to 2021, and the Bills like that he offers a similar type of big-bodied player with an ability to run should anything happen to The Franchise.
Mar 6, 2024
Returns to Buffalo as backup
The Bills signed Trubisky on Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Steelers released Trubisky last month after a failed two-year run with the team where the 29-year-old went 2-5 as a starter and was benched multiple times in favor of Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. Trubisky spent the 2021 season as Josh Allen's backup with the Bills and will head back to a familiar spot where he'll replace Kyle Allen as Buffalo's QB2.
Feb 12, 2024
Cut loose by Steelers
The Steelers cut Trubisky on Monday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Among his five appearances during the 2023 season, Trubisky earned two starts and overall completed 67 of 107 passes for 632 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing 16 times for 54 yards and two more scores. Both Kenny Pickett early and Mason Rudolph late in the campaign played over Trubisky when they were healthy, and with the decision to move on from the latter, he'll get a head start on his next destination.
Jan 6, 2024
Emergency option Saturday
Trubisky (coach's decision) is listed as inactive for Saturday's matchup with the Ravens, but will be available as an emergency option, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official website reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky will only see the field if both Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett happen to get knocked out of the game. The veteran signal caller started for a three-week stretch before getting demoted the previous two games.
Dec 21, 2023
Serving as No. 2 QB this week
Head coach Mike Tomlin announced Thursday that Trubisky will serve as the No. 2 quarterback behind Mason Rudolph for Saturday's game against the Bengals, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Kenny Pickett will remain out for a third game in a row while recovering from tightrope surgery on his right ankle, but Trubisky will be bumped down to second on the depth chart in favor of Rudolph after starting the prior two contests. Trubisky went 0-2 during his brief run as a starter, completing 38 of 58 pass attempts for 359 yards (6.2 YPA), two touchdowns and three interceptions while adding 31 yards and two scores on 10 carries. The Steelers benched Trubisky late in this past Saturday's 30-13 loss to the Colts and turned to Rudolph, who will now get his first start since the 2021 season. Pickett was a limited participant in practice Tuesday through Thursday and could be ready to return to the lineup Week 17 versus the Seahawks, so Trubisky may find himself as a healthy inactive for that contest as the Steelers' emergency No. 3 quarterback.
Dec 18, 2023
Demoted from starting role
Coach Mike Tomlin said Monday that Pittsburgh plans to start Mason Rudolph over Trubisky against the Bengals on Saturday, ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tomlin added that Kenny Pickett (ankle) will reclaim the starting role whenever he's healthy enough to do so, which could be as soon as Saturday's game. Trubisky entered in relief of Pickett in Week 13, then started the next two games, all of which the Steelers lost. He'll presumably drop to third on the quarterback depth chart once Pickett's healthy, but Trubisky could remain in a backup role behind Rudolph against the Bengals if Pickett doesn't gain clearance to play.
Dec 16, 2023
Benched late against Colts
Trubisky was benched late in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game against the Colts, Alan Saunders of SteelersNow.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky led the Steelers to 13 points in the first quarter, but he couldn't muster any scoring drives for the rest of his time leading the offense. He also threw a pair of interceptions, the latter of which likely clinched a win for the Colts. Mason Rudolph will enter the game in his place, leaving Pittsburgh's quarterback situation very ambiguous heading into a Week 16 matchup against the Bengals.
Dec 11, 2023
Another start awaits
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Monday that Trubisky will make a second consecutive start Saturday in Indianapolis while Kenny Pickett continues his recovery from ankle surgery, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Pickett set to be inactive for the second week in a row, Mason Rudolph will serve as the No. 2 quarterback behind Trubisky, who could have a shorter leash in Week 15 after turning in a listless showing against the 3-10 Patriots in this past Thursday's 21-18 loss. He completed 22 of 35 passes for 190 yards, one touchdown and one interception and added 30 yards and a score on eight carries, and he was spared another interception in the first half when a Patriots defender was called for pass interference. Trubisky profiles as a lower-end fantasy option for Week 15, though the rushing ability that he displayed this past Thursday and during his time with the Bears could give him some appeal in leagues that start two quarterbacks or have a QB flex spot.
Dec 7, 2023
Largely ineffective in start
Trubisky completed 22 of 35 passes for 190 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the Steelers' 21-18 loss to the Patriots on Thursday night. He also rushed eight times for 30 yards and another score and threw a two-point conversion pass.
ANALYSIS
Making his first start of Kenny Pickett's (ankle) multi-game absence, Trubisky turned in a lackluster effort that featured plenty of inaccurate throws and just 5.4 yards per attempt. The veteran did serve as the Steelers' leading rusher -- albeit with a modest yardage total -- and connected with Diontae Johnson on a 25-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter. Trubisky added a one-yard scoring sneak early in the fourth quarter following a blocked punt that set the Steelers up in excellent field position, and he added a sharp two-point conversion pass to Pat Freiermuth after that touchdown. However, Pittsburgh's next two drives ended in a punt and on downs, and Trubisky then padded his final numbers with 24- and 21-yard completions to Johnson and Allen Robinson, respectively, on the final two plays. With some additional time between Thursday's contest and a Week 15 Saturday afternoon road matchup against the Colts on Dec. 16, it remains to be seen if Trubisky is usurped by Mason Rudolph for a start if Pi
Dec 4, 2023
Confirmed for Week 14 start
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Trubisky will start at quarterback Thursday against the Patriots, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky will step in for his first start of the season as a replacement for Kenny Pickett, who exited Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Cardinals with a right high-ankle sprain and underwent surgery Monday. Though Tomlin clarified that the injury won't end Pickett's season, the second-year signal-caller is expected to miss "a couple weeks," according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Trubisky could thus be in line for an additional start or two beyond Thursday's game, which features a matchup of two teams who both rank in the bottom third in the league in both points and yards per game. Though Trubisky has shown flashes of fantasy relevance in the past thanks to his scrambling ability, he hasn't been particularly impressive over roughly five quarters of work while filing in for a banged-up Pickett this season. Across those three appearances, Trubisky has completed 29 of 49 pass attempts (59.2 percent) for 273 yards (5.6 YPA), two touchdowns and two interceptions while carrying six times for 23 yards.
Dec 3, 2023
Likely to get at least one start
Trubisky completed 11 of 17 passes for 117 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 24-10 loss to Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky entered the game just before halftime after Kenny Pickett suffered an ankle injury. He struggled to move the offense until the game was out of reach, as 65 of his yards came on the Steelers' final drive with the team down 21 points. Pickett is expected to miss time and will face a short turnaround before Thursday's matchup against the Patriots, meaning Trubisky is likely to get at least one start.
Oct 29, 2023
Throws two interceptions Sunday
Trubisky completed 15 of 27 pass attempts for 138 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions while rushing three times for 18 yards during the Steelers' 20-10 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky entered Sunday's matchup in the second quarter after Kenny Pickett (ribs) left the game and served as the Steelers' quarterback for the remainder of the game since Pickett was ruled out for the remainder of the game. Trubisky wasn't particularly effective in relief and was unable to lead the Steelers to the win. Pickett was initially expected to return to the game before being ruled out, so it's possible he'll be available in Week 9. However, Pittsburgh has a short week before facing the Titans on Thursday, so a better idea of the Steelers' plans at quarterback should come into focus based on Pickett's participation in practice early this week. Trubisky would presumably serve as the Steelers' starting quarterback if Pickett is unable to suit up.
Oct 1, 2023
Needed late in Week 4 loss
Trubisky completed three of five passes for 18 yards after replacing Kenny Pickett (knee) in Sunday's 30-6 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Pickett was injured on a Jonathan Greenard sack, forcing Trubisky to take the reins of the offense for the entire fourth quarter. The 29-year-old QB did little with the opportunity -- his longest completion went for just eight yards -- but Houston also held a 23-6 lead when Trubisky entered the game, and Pittsburgh didn't make an aggressive attempt to mount a comeback. It's not clear at this point how serious Pickett's injury is, but if he's unavailable in Week 5, Trubisky would get the start at home against a tough but injury-riddled Ravens defense.
Aug 25, 2023
Efficient in victory
Trubisky completed seven of nine pass attempts for 54 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions while rushing once for 24 yards during Thursday's 24-0 preseason win over the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
After a lackluster performance in the preseason opener, Trubisky has turned things around during the last two matchups, completing 17 of 22 pass attempts for 132 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions while rushing three times for 37 yards. Mason Rudolph wasn't nearly as effective during Thursday's preseason finale, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Trubisky open the regular season as the Steelers' No. 2 quarterback.
Aug 20, 2023
Bounces back Saturday
Trubisky completed 10 of 13 pass attempts for 78 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions while rushing twice for 13 yards during Saturday's 27-15 win over the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky wasn't very effective during the Steelers' preseason opener, but he saw the most work of any of the team's quarterbacks Saturday and was an effective option. Kenny Pickett is still the team's clear starter, but it was encouraging to see Trubisky generate some production Saturday, especially after Mason Rudolph put together another solid performance.
Aug 12, 2023
Struggles in preseason win
Trubisky completed one of four pass attempts for 10 yards, no touchdowns and an interception during Friday's 27-17 preseason win over Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Although Trubisky lost his starting job with the Steelers early in the 2023 campaign, he landed a two-year contract extension with the team during the offseason. Kenny Pickett is the clear top starting option for the Steelers ahead of the regular season, so Trubisky's performances don't carry as much weight this preseason. However, Pittsburgh also has Mason Rudolph and Tanner Morgan in the quarterback room, and it's possible one of them challenges Trubisky for the No. 2 job if he continues to struggle.
May 18, 2023
Signing extension
Trubisky is signing a two-year extension with the Steelers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky signed a two-year contract last offseason and was scheduled for a $10 million cap hit in 2023. This reportedly lowers the cap charge, and it may also give him a degree of security beyond the upcoming season (or not... it depends on what the details are). The Steelers recently re-signed Mason Rudolph, who might technically get a chance to challenge Trubisky for the second spot on the depth chart but will be a big underdog in that competition. Kenny Pickett enters spring practices as the unquestioned starter, though his rookie-year performance suggests he could land on the hot seat quickly if things don't go well in September.
Jan 9, 2023
Finishes 2022 campaign as backup
Trubisky appeared in seven games during the 2022 season and completed 65.0 percent of his pass attempts for 1,252 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing 19 times for 38 yards and two touchdowns.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky began his first season with the Steelers as the starting quarterback but was replaced by Kenny Pickett during the team's Week 4 loss to the Jets. While Trubisky appeared in three games later in the year to fill in when Pickett was hurt, the rookie first-rounder was used as the starter when healthy and led the Steelers to a winning record. Trubisky signed a two-year contract with Pittsburgh in March of 2022 and will likely serve in a backup capacity next year unless the Steelers elect to move on during the offseason.
Dec 22, 2022
Back to backup role
Trubisky is set to serve as the No. 2 quarterback behind Kenny Pickett in Saturday's game against the Raiders after Pickett cleared the NFL's five-step concussion protocol Monday and resumed practicing fully this week, Dale Lolley of the Steelers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite struggling in relief of a concussed Pickett in the Steelers' Week 14 loss to the Ravens, Trubisky drew the starting assignment over No. 3 quarterback Mason Rudolph while Pickett remained in the protocol for this past week's game against the Panthers. Though Trubisky was believed to be on a short leash entering the contest, he ended up playing every snap on offense and served as an effective game manager in the 24-16 win over Carolina, completing 17 of 22 pass attempts for 179 yards while rushing for a score and committing no turnovers. The performance won't be enough for Trubisky to remain the starter now that Pickett is healthy again, but it should allow Trubisky to stick ahead of Rudolph on the depth chart for further notice.
Dec 18, 2022
Leads road win
Trubisky completed 17 of 22 passes for 179 yards in Sunday's 24-16 win over the Panthers. He also rushed six times for nine yards and a touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky led the Steelers to a road victory while getting the nod over Mason Rudolph to replace injured starter Kenny Pickett (concussion). Along with connecting with top wideout Diontae Johnson for a season-high 10 catches, Trubisky added a scoring punch with quarterback sneak during the third quarter. Despite his serviceable performance Sunday, Trubisky would figure to return to the sideline should Pickett be cleared for Week 16's game versus the Raiders.
Dec 18, 2022
Likely on short leash Sunday
Trubisky will start Sunday's game against the Panthers, but he could have a short leash if he struggles early on during the contest, sources tell Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
ANALYSIS
Though he'll pick up his first start since Week 4 with rookie Kenny Pickett (concussion) ruled out in advance of Sunday's contest, Trubisky doesn't look as though he'll have much margin for error. After coming on in relief of the concussed Pickett in last week's 16-14 loss to the Ravens, Trubisky completed 22 of 30 pass attempts for 276 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions while also taking a sack. With Pickett sidelined in practice throughout the week, Trubisky split first-team reps Wednesday through Friday with Mason Rudolph before head coach Mike Tomlin named Trubisky the Week 15 starter following Friday's session. Rudolph has been the Steelers' third-string quarterback all season, but he'll dress as the backup Sunday and should be prepared to step in if Trubisky puts the Steelers in an early hole.
Dec 17, 2022
Confirmed as Week 15 starter
Trubisky will start Sunday's game against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
With Kenny Pickett (concussion) downgraded to out Saturday, Trubisky has been confirmed as Sunday's starter, which sets the stage for Mason Rudolph to serve as the team's No. 2 QB versus Carolina. In that context, Trubisky -- who started the Steelers' first four games of the season -- represents a Week 15 lineup option for those in QB-heavy leagues or who are otherwise scrambling for a short-term option at the position.
Dec 17, 2022
Expected to start Sunday
Trubisky is expected to start Sunday's game against the Panthers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With Kenny Pickett listed as doubtful and still in the NFL's concussion protocol, Trubisky is expected to get the starting nod Sunday rather than Mason Rudolph, who he had been splitting practice reps with. Trubisky thus provides those scrambling for QB help in Week 15 with a lineup option, while Pickett will look to gain clearance to play in Week 16 against Las Vegas.
Dec 16, 2022
Option to start Sunday
Coach Mike Tomlin said Friday that he won't make a decision on the Steelers' starting quarterback between Trubisky and Mason Rudolph for Sunday's game at Carolina until Saturday with Kenny Pickett (concussion) doubtful to play, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky subbed in for Pickett after the latter entered the concussion protocol last Sunday against the Ravens, completing 22 of 30 passes for 276 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in a 16-14 loss. While the performance was mistake-prone, Trubisky also posted an efficient 9.2 yards per attempt on the backs of three completions of 20-plus yards. Trubisky and Rudolph split first-team reps in practice all week, so Tomlin seemingly has all the info he needs to make a call between the two, but it won't be known until some point Saturday. Whoever gets the nod will be facing the Panthers' 15th-ranked pass defense (214.7 yards per game).
Dec 11, 2022
Three picks in relief
Trubisky completed 22 of 30 passes for 276 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in Sunday's 16-14 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky entered the game in relief of Kenny Pickett (concussion) late in the first quarter. While he put up plenty of yardage, Trubisky doomed the Steelers to a loss with an ugly three-interception performance -- two of which occurred deep in Baltimore territory. While Trubisky won't be fantasy relevant in most traditional formats, he could provide a boost to Diontae Johnson, George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth if Pickett is unable to return in time for a Week 15 matchup against the Panthers.
Oct 16, 2022
Effective in replacement role
Trubisky completed nine of 12 pass attempts for 144 yards and a touchdown while rushing six times for five yards during the Steelers' 20-18 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky served as a backup for a second consecutive week but was needed in relief when Kenny Pickett exited with a concussion midway through the third quarter. After struggling with inefficiency earlier in the season, Trubisky was strong down the stretch to help lead Pittsburgh to its second win of the 2022 campaign. It wouldn't be surprising to see Pickett reclaim his starting role once he's deemed fully healthy, but Trubisky should serve as the Steelers' starting quarterback next Sunday against Miami if Pickett is unable to clear the league's concussion protocol in time for the game.
Oct 4, 2022
Demoted to No. 2 role
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Tuesday that Trubisky will serve as the team's backup quarterback Week 5 in Buffalo while Kenny Pickett takes over as the starter, Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The writing was on the wall for Trubisky's demotion to the No. 2 role after he was benched for the second half of Sunday's 24-20 loss to the Jets, with Pickett stepping in to engineer two scoring drives to give the Steelers a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter that the team ultimately couldn't maintain. Even though Pickett threw three interceptions on the afternoon, he completed his other 10 passes for 120 yards in addition to scoring twice on the ground, and the spark he provided was enough for the Steelers to move the rookie first-round pick into the starting role. While playing every snap on offense in the Steelers' first three and a half games of the season, Trubisky guided the team to a 1-2 record and completed only 59.5 percent of his throws for 5.6 yards per attempt.
Oct 2, 2022
Replaced by Pickett in Week 4
Trubisky completed seven of 13 pass attempts for 84 yards, no touchdowns and an interception while rushing once for one yard during the Steelers' 24-20 loss to the Jets on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky had an inefficient first half during Sunday's matchup, and the Steelers trailed 10-6 at halftime. As a result, the team turned to rookie Kenny Pickett at quarterback to begin the second half. Pickett threw three interceptions, but he had 120 passing yards while tallying two rushing touchdowns as the Steelers nearly secured a comeback win. Trubisky has failed to propel the Steelers' offense much over the first four weeks of the season, so it certainly seems possible that he'll have to settle for a backup role moving forward.
Sep 23, 2022
Scores rushing TD in loss
Trubisky completed 20 of 32 passes for 207 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed twice for seven yards and a touchdown in the Steelers' 29-17 loss to the Browns on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
The Steelers' lackluster offensive performance will once again be the subject of plenty of scrutiny, but Trubisky actually turned in his most efficient performance yet in a Pittsburgh uniform. The 2017 second overall pick showed impressive chemistry with Diontae Johnson once again while connecting with him for eight completions and 84 yards, and he hit six different targets on the night overall. Trubisky looked effective running the no-huddle offense in the first half as well, and he notched a completion of at least 20 yards to each of Chase Claypool, George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth, an encouraging sign the veteran signal-caller may be getting more comfortable in the offense. Notably, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports head coach Mike Tomlin answered "definitively no" when asked if he'd consider making a playcaller and/or quarterback change over the team's 10-day layoff, leaving Trubisky to continue getting in sync with his pass catchers ahead of a Week 4 home matchup against the Jets a week from Sunday.

Limited production against Patriots
Trubisky completed 21 of 33 pass attempts for 168 yards, a touchdown and an interception while rushing once for seven yards during Sunday's 17-14 loss to the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky was efficient during the preseason, but he hasn't had the same kind of success over the Steelers' first two games in the regular season. He's completed just 59.2 percent of his pass attempts and has been held under 200 yards in each of his first two games with Pittsburgh. Although the Steelers won their regular-season opener and were competitive against New England, they'll need more production from Trubisky if they hope to contend in the talented AFC North this season. The team will have a short week prior to Thursday's Week 3 matchup in Cleveland.
Sep 11, 2022
Rough debut with new team
Trubisky completed 21-of-38 pass attempts for 194 yards and one touchdown against Cincinnati on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
No turnovers is a good thing, but Trubisky was unacceptably ineffective as a passer in this game, making for memorably ugly tape as he repeatedly missed opportunities and made inaccurate throws the few times he did recognize a passing opportunity. If the Steelers mean to be competitive in 2022 then they'll need Trubisky to play better going forward. They play at home against a reeling New England squad in Week 2.

Appointed to starting role
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced that Trubisky will open the season as the team's starting quarterback Sunday in Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
All signs had been pointing to Trubisky beginning the season as the team's starter for a while. After he started each of the Steelers' three preseason games, Trubisky was then named a team captain and was listed atop the team's initial Week 1 depth chart released Monday. Tomlin went on to confirm that rookie Kenny Pickett will begin the season as the Steelers' No. 2 quarterback, and his first-round pedigree and impressive preseason could mean that Trubisky may have a short leash for the starting role if he struggles early on during the season. For his part, Trubisky performed efficiently in the Steelers' Aug. 28 preseason finale, completing 15 of 19 pass attempts for 160 yards and a touchdown.
Sep 5, 2022
Listed as starter on initial depth chart
Trubisky is listed first at quarterback on the Steelers' initial regular season depth chart, followed by Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
At this stage, coach Mike Tomlin hasn't made any official announcement on the team's Week 1 starting QB, but it looks like Trubisky is trending toward getting the nod Sunday against the Bengals. Per James Palmer of NFL Network, Tomlin is scheduled to do his weekly news conference Tuesday, at which point it's possible he'll officially confirm Pittsburgh's QB pecking order.
Aug 28, 2022
No decision on starting QB yet
Trubisky started Sunday's preseason finale against the Lions, but head coach Mike Tomlin told Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site that he has yet to make a decision on who will start at quarterback Week 1 at Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky started the Steelers' final preseason game with the first unit, completing 15 of 19 pass attempts for 160 yards and a touchdown. The 28-year-old has put together a strong preseason, despite carrying a bust label from his time in Chicago. That said, rookie Kenny Pickett has been just as impressive, if not more, given his lack of pro experience. While Trubisky's veteran status and strong results on the field this preseason would bode well for his chances to win this fierce quarterback competition, Tomlin's stance on not making a decision yet makes both signal-callers risky fantasy options for the time being.
Aug 26, 2022
Draws Sunday start
Coach Mike Tomlin relayed that Trubisky will start Sunday's preseason finale against the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Per Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site, Trubisky will be followed in the contest by Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. At this stage, the team has yet to declare a Week 1 starting QB, but Trubisky has been viewed as the favorite on that front. That said, Pickett -- the No. 20 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft -- remains a threat to overtake his veteran counterpart at some point and how the two fare in Sunday's action could well add some intrigue to the competition.
Aug 24, 2022
Confirms no QB announcement
Trubisky confirmed to reporters that there's been no official announcement of the Steelers' starting quarterback, Chris Halicke of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky started the first two preseason games and reportedly has dominated reps with the starters in practice, but it's possible he's facing a late challenge from Kenny Pickett, who has completed 19 of 22 passes for 171 yards and three TDs in exhibitions. Pickett even got some work with the first-string offense after Trubisky was pulled from the second preseason game, throwing for 63 yards and a TD in the final minute of the first half. Trubisky also has good numbers this preseason -- 9-of-15 passing for 123 yards and a TD -- and remains the favorite to start Week 1, but Pickett's excellent preseason does increase the veteran's risk of losing the starting job if he struggles in-season. Trubisky did say he expects to start Pittsburgh's final preseason game Sunday against the Lions, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
Aug 20, 2022
Sidetracked by pressure
Trubisky completed five of eight passes for 60 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to the Jaguars. He also rushed for 10 yards.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky wasn't as efficient as he was in his debut with the Steelers, but he wasn't afforded much time to throw. He escaped from pressure on several occasions, including one instance where he scrambled for a 10-yard gain. While the performance wasn't impressive overall, Trubisky did connect with Chase Claypool for a 29-yard gain. Though Kenny Pickett posted a more impressive stat line, Trubisky is still the likely starter for Week 1 against the Bengals.
Aug 18, 2022
Starting Saturday's preseason game
Trubisky will start Saturday's preseason game against the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky saw the least volume as a passer during last weekend's preseason opener against the Seahawks, but he was efficient and completed four of seven pass attempts for 63 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. He'll work with Pittsburgh's first-team offense once again during the second preseason matchup, further cementing his status as the frontrunner for the starting quarterback job.
Aug 13, 2022
Efficient in starting role
Trubisky completed four of seven pass attempts for 63 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions while rushing once for four yards during Saturday's 32-25 preseason win over the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky began Saturday's preseason opener under center and worked with the first-team offense for the first two drives of the game. While the 2017 first-rounder had the least volume of the three Steelers quarterbacks during the victory, he was efficient with his opportunities and connected with receiver Gunner Olszewski for a touchdown on the game's opening drive. Trubisky has appeared to be the most likely starting quarterback early in camp, and his usage and performance Saturday seemed to help his case.
Aug 11, 2022
Set to start Saturday
Trubisky will start Saturday's preseason opener against the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Per Alan Saunders of PittsburghSportsNow.com, Trubisky -- the favorite to be the Steelers' Week 1 starting QB -- will be followed in the contest by Mason Rudolph and then Kenny Pickett. Meanwhile, Missi Matthews of the team's official site relays via coach Mike Tomlin that Pittsburgh's starters figure to play about a quarter Saturday, while the second until is in line to play in the second and third quarter followed by the third unit in the fourth quarter.
Aug 10, 2022
Pulling ahead in QB competition
Trubisky is trending toward winning the Steelers' starting quarterback job, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky has had his fair share of struggles early in camp, but he's still spent most of his time with the first-team offense ahead of Pittsburgh's first preseason game. While Mason Rudolph has been better than expected with Kenny Pickett showing improvement as camp progresses, Rapoport reports that Trubisky will "almost certainly" start under center for the Steelers' regular-season opener against Cincinnati on Sept. 11. The team's quarterback competition remains open, and it's certainly possible that Pickett sees some looks at some point after Pittsburgh selected him in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but Trubisky seems to be gaining the trust of the coaching staff with just over a month left before the start of the regular season.
Aug 4, 2022
Likely frontrunner for starting job
Trubisky has been treated like the favorite to serve as the Steelers' starting quarterback early in training camp, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky has received consistent reps with the first-team offense over the first week of camp, and he worked exclusively with the starters Thursday while Mason Rudolph and Kenny Pickett split reps between the second-team and third-team offenses, Chris Halicke of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. Coach Mike Tomlin has told reporters not to read too much into the distribution of reps among the team's quarterbacks early in camp, but Trubisky has certainly been given plenty of opportunities to showcase his potential. The 2017 first-rounder has been inconsistent while learning a new system and dealing with absences of key offensive skill players, but the team has still entrusted him with a meaningful workload. Rudolph and Pickett should continue to compete with Trubisky throughout training camp and the preseason, but Trubisky appears to be the frontrunner for the starting job with just over a month remaining until the regular season.
Jul 27, 2022
Getting first-team reaps
Trubisky was consistently the first QB through the rotation at Wednesday's practice, with Mason Rudolph second and Kenny Pickett third, Josh Rowntree of KDKA Radio reports.
ANALYSIS
Pickett, a rookie first-round pick, represents the real threat to Trubisky's job security, be it early in the season or later on. Most reports out of Pittsburgh have Trubisky as a heavy favorite for the Week 1 start, and he's taken the bulk of first-team reps dating back to spring practices. Rudolph is the only one of the three who has any experience working in the Steelers offense under OC Matt Canada, but Trubisky and Pickett both are more athletic and have stronger arms.
Apr 29, 2022
Gets additional competition at QB
Trubisky will have additional competition for the starting quarterback job during training camp after the Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old was the clear favorite for the starting job when he signed a two-year contract with Pittsburgh in mid-March, but Kaboly reports that Pickett should compete for the starting role once training camp gets underway. Trubisky is still seen as the frontrunner to serve as the No. 1 option to begin the season, but he's unlikely to have too much job security, particularly if Pickett impresses in practice and preseason games. Trubisky appeared in 10 games with the Bears in 2020 and completed 199 of 297 passes for 2,055 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions while rushing 33 times for 195 yards and a score.
Mar 15, 2022
Two-year deal with Steelers
Trubisky's deal with the Steelers is for two years, with a base value of approximately $14 million, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The report suggests that Trubisky's pact could max out at $27 million via incentives. Though Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins are also in the Steelers' post-Ben Roethlisberger quarterback mix, Kaboly indicates that Trubisky -- No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft -- is the clear favorite to be the team's Week 1 starter after spending last season with the Bills as Josh Allen's backup.
Mar 14, 2022
Joining Steelers
Trubisky has agreed to a two-year deal with the Steelers, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft (by the Bears) served as Josh Allen's backup with the Bills last season. With the Steelers, however, Trubisky is now slated to have a chance to step back into a starting role, taking over for Pittsburgh's long-time franchise QB Ben Roethlisberger, who retired after the 2021 season. Also in the team's signal-caller mix are Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins.
Mar 9, 2022
To be targeted by Giants
The Giants are expected to seriously pursue Trubisky when free agency begins March 16, Jordan Raanan of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky would reunite with coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen if he were to land in New York, all of whom spent the 2021 season together in Buffalo. Linking up with the Giants would prime Trubisky to compete with incumbent Daniel Jones, and allow the team a choice between whichever former top-10 draft pick is shows out best in practice. On the other hand, if Trubisky does indeed hit the open market, it's possible he could receive offers from suitors more willing to hand him a clear path to a starting gig. The Saints, Steelers, Commanders and Seahawks all stand out as teams that could pursue an answer at quarterback in free agency.
Mar 2, 2022
Likely on the move
Coach Sean McDermott acknowledged at the NFL Scouting Combine that he thinks "it's unrealistic to think" that the Bills will be able to retain Trubisky, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
After four years with the Bears, who took Trubisky second overall in the 2017 NFL draft, the QB signed a one-year deal last March with the Bills to back up Josh Allen. Following a 2021 campaign in which he attempted just eight regular-season passes, it seems likely that Trubisky -- who turns 28 in August -- will now look to join a team that will give him the opportunity to compete for a starting job this coming season.
Jan 26, 2022
Could return if market is cold
Bills GM Brandon Beane said the team would like to re-sign Trubisky if the quarterback doesn't get the contract he's hoping for elsewhere, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After signing with the Bills for 2021 and serving as Josh Allen's backup, Trubisky will try to find his chance to compete for a starting job. He's thus unlikely to re-sign with the Bills before free agency, but he might consider returning as a backup if he doesn't find an opportunity to start. Trubisky attempted only eight passes in 2021 with Allen enjoying a healthy, productive season.
Dec 15, 2021
At the ready
Trubisky's teammate Josh Allen suffered a foot injury in Sunday's overtime loss to the Buccaneers, and in case Allen (limited at Wednesday's practice) can't play this week, Trubisky has gotten a bigger share of reps in practice, Dante Lasting of the Bills' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
We would suspect Allen is going to gut it out given his proven toughness coupled with the fact the Bills are barely hanging onto a playoff spot, but if Allen did get ruled out, his understudy could be a sneaky play in Week 15 against a struggling Panthers squad. Trubisky has looked good during his limited preseason and practice work ever since joining the Bills, and while not nearly the QB that Allen is, he does have decent arm/legs skills that should work well in the team's offense.

Makes return from COVID-19 list
The Bills reinstated Trubisky (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Sidelined for the Bills' past two games after testing positive for the virus Nov. 6, Trubisky looks poised to turn in a full week of practice and reclaim backup duties behind starting signal-caller Josh Allen in Sunday's game against the Colts. Davis Webb served as Allen's understudy in the Bills' 45-17 win over the Jets in Week 10 and took a couple of kneeldowns at the end of the blowout victory.
Nov 14, 2021
Remains out Week 10
Trubisky (illness) wasn't activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of Saturday's deadline for Week 10 transactions and won't be available for Sunday's game against the Jets, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Davis Webb has been elevated from the practice squad for the second straight week and will once again back up starting quarterback Josh Allen while Trubisky continues to recover from COVID-19. Trubisky tested positive for the virus last weekend.
Nov 6, 2021
Moved to COVID-19 list
Trubisky was added to the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky joins practice squad players Tanner Gentry and Jake Fromm on the team's reserve/COVID-19 list. It's unclear what protocols the 2017 first-round pick will fall under in terms of his vaccination status. Davis Webb is set to back up Josh Allen come Sunday.
Aug 29, 2020
Still in starting contention
Coach Matt Nagy confirmed Saturday neither Trubisky or Nick Foles will be listed as the starter before the team's Week 1 matchup against the Lions, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It seems like a bit of gamesmanship on behalf of the Bears, as Matt Nagy did suggest the team will know who the starter is during that first week of practice ahead of Week 1. All indications from beat writers seem to lean towards Foles as the frontrunner, but only because of Trubisky's struggles throughout training camp. With two weeks left of the "preseason", it's possible the 2017 No. 3 overall pick could play his way into the starting lineup with a handful of solid practices.
Aug 18, 2020
Alternating days as starter
Trubisky is taking turns during practice each day with Nick Foles as the starting quarterback, Adam Jahns of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
This news won't help fantasy managers make a decision as to which Chicago quarterback is the better fantasy option, and with no preseason games, there may not be clarity unless one of them begins to receive regular first-team reps. If he wins the job, Trubisky is likely to function as a low-end second quarterback for fantasy managers.
Jun 23, 2020
Working with teammates
Trubisky (shoulder) led offseason workouts with teammates in the Chicago area, Bryan Perez of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky had an interesting offseason, starting with January surgery on a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. The Bears traded for Nick Foles a couple months later, then declined to pick up the fifth-year option on Trubisky's rookie contract. Coach Matt Nagy said his incumbent will take the first snap with the starting offense at training camp, but Foles will be given every opportunity to win the Week 1 starting job. Given the distinct possibility of a truncated preseason, Chicago's QB battle may be determined on the practice field. Whoever wins the job will be directing a passing attack with major question marks beyond No. 1 receiver Allen Robinson, though the Bears hope Ted Ginn and Jimmy Graham will be upgrades on 2019 starters Taylor Gabriel (free agent) and Trey Burton (Colts).
Jun 1, 2020
Embracing competition with Foles
Coach Matt Nagy said Monday that Trubisky (shoulder) has been "really, really good in the fact that he's taken this [competition] head-on," Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nagy has previously stated that the team's Week 1 starter will be determined in an open competition between Trubisky and Nick Foles, whom the team acquired for a fourth-round pick in a trade with Jacksonville in April. The Bears then declined to pick up Trubisky's fifth-year option, a hint that Foles is viewed internally as the frontrunner to beat out Trubisky in training camp and the preseason. The 25-year-old demonstrated a career-low 6.1 yards per pass attempt last season while leading one of the least potent offenses in the league. He's also recovering from January surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder.
May 2, 2020
Not extended
Trubisky (shoulder) will not have his fifth-year option picked up, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
This shouldn't come as a major surprise given the Bears' offseason acquisition of Nick Foles. While the fifth-year, $24 million option would have only been guaranteed for injury, it's still a tremendous financial commitment to a quarterback that has failed to live up to his draft-day expectations. The Bears have suggested it's still an open competition between Foles and the 2017 No. 3 overall pick, but after Trubisky's dismal 2019 performance, the former Jaguar appears to be the front runner at the moment based on this latest transaction alone.
Apr 25, 2020
Fifth-year option unlikely
Trubisky (shoulder) may not have his fifth-year option picked up by the Bears, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
This seems rather obvious considering the Bears traded a fourth-round compensatory pick to the Jaguars for Nick Foles in what was billed by the front office as a means to "improve the competition" at quarterback, but it's still a relatively important note considering the team has until May 4 to make a final decision. If the Bears do surprisingly choose to opt in for the fifth and final year, Trubisky would be projected to come in around $24 million.
Apr 3, 2020
Primed for job battle
Trubisky (shoulder) will take the first snap whenever the Bears are able to practice, but coach Matt Nagy said it will be an open QB competition between the 25-year-old and Nick Foles, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, general manager Ryan Pace declined to comment on the team's impending decision on Trubisky's fifth-year option. The deadline to pick up the option is in early May, and while it likely would cost more than $20 million, the salary would be guaranteed for injury only. Trubisky is recovering from January surgery on a partially torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, while Foles has returned to health after an injury-marred 2019 campaign in Jacksonville. The Bears traded a fourth-round pick for the 31-year-old quarterback, who subsequently agreed to reduced base salaries in exchange for player options to void his contract after either of the next two seasons.
Apr 2, 2020
Could keep starting job
Nick Foles' restructured contract suggests Trubisky (shoulder) has a shot to keep the starting job, according to JJ Stankevitz of NBC Sports Chicago.
ANALYSIS
The Bears traded the Jaguars a fourth-round pick for Foles, who subsequently agreed to reduce his base salaries in exchange for a player option to void his contract after the 2020 or 2021 seasons. Trubisky is actually scheduled to have a slightly higher cap hit for the upcoming campaign, though Foles has incentives that ultimately could push him over the top if he gets considerable playing time. Bears GM Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy haven't yet commented on their expectations for a QB competition, or lack thereof. Trubisky is still recovering from January surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder.
Feb 25, 2020
Gets commitment from GM Pace
General manager Ryan Pace reiterated Tuesday that the Bears are committed to Trubisky (shoulder) as their starting quarterback, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bears may be committed to Trubisky for 2020, but Pace said the team hasn't decided on picking up the fifth-year contract option for 2021. The deadline for that decision is May 30, at which point the Bears expect Trubisky to be back on the field for spring practices. The 25-year-old quarterback is said to be making good progress in his recovery from January surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. A fifth-year option would cost approximately $24 million and would be guaranteed for injury only.
Jan 29, 2020
Recovering from shoulder surgery
Trubisky underwent surgery to address the partially torn labrum in his left shoulder after the conclusion of the 2019 regular season, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky suffered the torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder Week 4 of the regular season, and he managed to tough through the issue after only a one-game absence. The procedure's recovery timetable isn't expected to have any impact on his availability for training camp. The 25-year-old signal-caller is set to enter the final year of his rookie contract with the Bears when the 2020 season kicks off, though the team will have until May 3 to make a decision regarding his fifth-year option for 2021.
Nov 22, 2019
Good to go
Trubisky (hip) has no injury designation for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky was removed for the final possession of last week's 17-7 loss to the Rams, with coach Matt Nagy citing a hip pointer. The quarterback returned to practice as a full participant Wednesday through Friday, setting him up for another start Sunday against the Giants. It's fair to wonder whether Nagy might consider switching to Chase Daniel in the event Trubisky can't end his struggles -- at least temporarily -- against a New York defense ranked 31st in yards allowed per pass attempt (8.8) and 25th in passing yards allowed per game (259.0).
Nov 17, 2019
Leaves with hip injury
Trubisky left Sunday's game against the Rams with a hip injury.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky played nearly the entire game, but it was Chase Daniel who quarterbacked the Bears on the final drive of Sunday's contest. Trubisky's status will be updated again when the Bears release more information regarding his injury. He completed 24-of-43 passes for 190 yards, and threw both one touchdown and one interception, before departing the game.
Oct 20, 2019
Active as expected Week 7
Trubisky (shoulder) is active for Sunday's Week 7 tilt versus the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky's active status was expected after he managed to practice in full all week. The third-year quarterback will be making his first appearance since Week 4, when he suffered his shoulder injury six snaps into a game against the Vikings. Trubisky will look to pick up where he left off in his last full game, a 231-yard, three-touchdown effort against the Redskins in Week 3 during which he completed a season-high 80.6 percent of his passes.
Oct 20, 2019
Expected to play Sunday
Trubisky (shoulder), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against New Orleans, will play according to sources, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Coming out of a bye week and with no limitations in practice, Trubisky should be ready to return from the injury to his non-throwing shoulder. With Taylor Gabriel (concussion) cleared to play, the Bears will have their full complement of weapons on offense for Trubisky's return.
Oct 18, 2019
Officially listed as questionable
Trubisky (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against New Orleans, despite practicing in full throughout the week.
ANALYSIS
Coming out of a bye week with no limitations in practice, Trubisky should be ready to return from the injury to his non-throwing shoulder. With Taylor Gabriel (concussion) cleared to play, the Bears will have their full complement of weapons on offense.
Oct 17, 2019
Puts in another full practice
Trubisky (shoulder) practiced in full Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky was expected to get all the reps with the first-team offense, which coach Matt Nagy said the Bears would use "to evaluate where he's at and see how much he can handle," per Larry Mayer of the team's official site. With Thursday's listing, Trubisky appears to be good to go against the Saints in Sunday, when he's slated to retain his role as the starting quarterback, according to Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune.
Oct 16, 2019
Practices in full Wednesday
Trubisky (shoulder) was a full practice participant Wednesday, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky has benefited from the Bears' Week 6 bye, completing every drill in practice for the first time since dislocating and suffering a slight labrum tear in his left non-throwing shoulder on Sept. 29. Whenever he's given clearance to play, he'll be required to wear a harness on that shoulder, which could impact his ability to catch snaps in the shotgun, according to Adam Hoge of WGN Radio 720 AM Chicago. Trubisky hasn't fumbled yet this season, but it was an issue during his first two campaigns, as he lost five of 16 fumbles across 26 starts.
Oct 16, 2019
Will practice Wednesday
Trubisky (shoulder) will participate in Wednesday's practice, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Matt Nagy said that he's "cautiously optimistic" Trubisky will start versus the Saints on Sunday, but he'll nonetheless split practice reps with backup Chase Daniel as a precaution, according to Stacey Dales of NFL Network. A final decision on Trubisky's availability for Week 7 will come after the Bears analyze how well the third-year quarterback holds up following a full week of practices.
Oct 14, 2019
Returns to practice
Coach Matt Nagy said Trubisky (shoulder) practiced Monday, Adam Jahns of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Nagy, Trubisky threw for the first time since dislocating and suffering a slight labrum tear in his left non-throwing shoulder Week 4. "I thought he looked good," Nagy told Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune. Nagy didn't commit to Trubisky returning to action Sunday against the Saints, but if he makes the requisite progress, it appears he'll be in the starting lineup this weekend.
Oct 9, 2019
Looking good for Week 7
The Bears' decision to release third-string quarterback Tyler Bray on Tuesday suggests Trubisky (shoulder) is expected to return for Week 7 against the Saints, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Bears get a well-timed Week 6 bye after losing to the Raiders in London on Sunday. Trubisky is recovering from a dislocation and slight labrum tear in his left shoulder, and while he may not be back to 100 percent, he should be ready to return Week 7 against the Saints. If not, Chase Daniel will get another start.
Oct 4, 2019
Ruled out for London game
Trubisky (shoulder) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Raiders in London.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky didn't practice at all this week and never seemed to have any shot at playing. He could be back after a Week 6 bye, with the Bears hosting the Saints in Week 7. Chase Daniel will get the start in London.
Sep 30, 2019
Unlikely to play this week
Trubisky (shoulder) is not expected to be available Week 5 against the Raiders in London, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky was forced out of Sunday's 16-6 divisional win over Minnesota due to a left shoulder injury, for which he's undergoing medical tests Monday. While a timetable for the third-year quarterback's recovery still remains undisclosed, it appears possible that he could be facing a multi-week absence. In any case, Chase Daniel is locked in for at least one more start versus Oakland.
Sep 29, 2019
Injury likely not season-ending
Coach Matt Nagy said after Sunday's win over the Vikings that he doesn't believe Trubisky's shoulder injury is season-ending, Adam Hoge of WGN Radio reports.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky exited in the first quarter with the shoulder injury. Beckup Chase Daniel came in and threw for 195 yards and a touchdown, while Chicago's defense dominated en route to a 16-6 win. While no timetable has been established for Trubisky's injury, reading between the lines of Nagy's comments suggests the starting quarterback could be staring at a multi-week absence.
Sep 29, 2019
Has shoulder injury, ruled out
Trubisky suffered a left shoulder injury during Sunday's game against the Vikings and won't return.
ANALYSIS
Trubisky got injured on a play that ultimately didn't count, as it was nullified by a defensive penalty on the Vikings. The Bears have yet to release the precise injury, but Trubisky will yield QB duties to backup Chase Daniel for the rest of the afternoon.
