In play to start this week?
Colts head coach Shane Steichen said Wednesday that he'll wait until the end of the week before deciding between Rivers and Riley Leonard (knee) as the starting QB for Sunday's game in Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Rivers, 44, hasn't played in a game since Jan. 9, 2021, and he even acknowledged Wednesday that he's heavier now than he was at the time of his retirement, per James Boyd of The Athletic. Steichen mentioned the need to get "back into football shape" but didn't explicitly shut the door on Rivers starting immediately. It's a big ask, but the team doesn't seem to have much confidence in Leonard, who entered the season as a third-stringer and suffered a PCL injury after replacing Daniel Jones (Achilles) during Sunday's loss at Jacksonville. Leonard stayed in the game and is now practicing Wednesday, but it's possible the minor injury impacts his mobility and thus plays a role in the decision on who starts at QB.

Officially joins Colts' practice squad
Rivers officially joined the Colts' practice squad Wednesday, JJ Stankevitz of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Rivers, who had retired after the 2020 season, bolsters a Colts QB corps that has been hit hard by injuries. Daniel Jones is out for the season with an Achilles' injury, Anthony Richardson (orbital) remains on IR, and Riley Leonard is dealing with a knee injury ahead of Sunday's game against the Seahawks. For now, Brett Rypien is the healthiest option on the team's active roster, but Stephen Holder of ESPN.com relayed Wednesday via coach Shane Steichen that Rivers will be evaluated as the week progresses, with Indianapolis' Week 15 QB plans yet to be determined.

Joins Indy's practice squad
Rivers signed with the Colts' practice squad Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rivers turned 44 years old earlier this week and is nearly five full years removed from his last NFL action, but the eight-time Pro Bowler apparently made enough of an impression during his workout Monday for the quarterback-needy Colts to bring him back into the fold for his second stint with Indianapolis. With Daniel Jones (Achilles) lost for the season and Anthony Richardson (orbital) lacking a clear timeline to return from injured reserve, rookie Riley Leonard (knee) is the next man up at quarterback for Indianapolis, but his availability for Sunday's game in Seattle is looking dicey after he sustained a Grade 1 PCL sprain in the Colts' Week 14 loss to the Jaguars. Rivers joins Brett Rypien as quarterbacks on Indianapolis' practice squad, though Rypien probably represents the likelier candidate of the two players to handle backup duties Week 15 if Leonard is cleared to start. During his last NFL campaign back in 2020 with Indianapolis, Rivers started all 16 regular-season contests and completed 68.0 perce

Auditioning for Colts
Rivers will work out with the Colts on Tuesday and could sign with their practice squad, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The Colts suffered a significant blow to their playoff hopes in a Week 14 loss to the Jaguars when Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles. Riley Leonard (knee) is projected to take over as the starter, though the team is surveying all potential options to fortify their quarterback room. While he had an excellent career, Rivers hasn't played in the NFL since 2020 and has most recently been the coach of a high school football team. Rivers may join the team as insurance, but it's difficult to imagine him actually suiting up for the team.

Comeback not ruled out
Though Rivers previously announced his retirement from the NFL after one season with the Colts, he hasn't completely ruled out a return down the road, ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that such an outcome isn't anything that's imminent, but Rivers is aiming to get/stay in shape just in case an opportunity for a late-season return that appeals to him arises. With that in mind, Rivers noted of his current level of playing shape, "I'm not quite there. I'm getting back there. I wouldn't have made weight if I had to report last week, that's for sure. But I am getting back into the lifting and running, and...occasionally throw a ball around..." The possibility of Rivers potentially making a comeback predictably became a source of speculation after Carson Wentz suffered a foot injury that could sideline him early on this season, but as things stand the Colts seem content to see what that have in backup signal caller Jacob Eason.

Decides to retire
Rivers has decided to retire after a 17-year career, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. "It's just time," said Rivers.
ANALYSIS
Rivers finishes his career ranked fifth all-time with 63,440 passing yards. He threw for 4,169 yards with 24 touchdowns and a 7.7 YPA in his lone season with the Colts, leading them to the playoffs, after spending the first 16 seasons of his career with the Chargers.
Jan 14, 2021
Facing uncertain future
Colts GM Chris Ballard plans to speak with Rivers in February, Stephen Holder of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ballard believes Rivers can still play, but it isn't clear the quarterback will want to stick around for another season, nor is it clear the Colts want him back. The 39-year-old put up respectable passing stats in 2020, but he offers nothing as a runner and is well past his prime, so the Colts might shift their focus to finding a younger QB. The team should have a better idea before free agency begins in March.
Jan 9, 2021
Can't complete comeback in Buffalo
Rivers completed 27 of 46 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 27-24 wild-card round loss to the Bills. He also threw a two-point conversion and rushed once for minus-1 yard.
ANALYSIS
Rivers directed the Colts' offense past midfield on each of the team's three first-quarter possessions, but those drives all stalled soon after, resulting in just three total points. He led a touchdown drive capped by a one-yard Jonathan Taylor run on the next possession but just missed Dexter Pittman in the back of the end zone on 4th-and-goal with a chance to grab a 17-7 edge on the ensuing drive and ended up trailing 14-10 heading into the locker room after Buffalo scored just before halftime. After a quiet third quarter, Rivers heated up in the fourth, tossing touchdowns to Zach Pascal (nine yards) and Jack Doyle (27 yards) to pull within three points. He got the ball back with 2:30 remaining but came up short on a Hail Mary attempt as time expired after Buffalo was granted a timeout to negate a completion that would have put Indianapolis in field-goal range. If this is the last we see of Rivers, he went out in fitting fashion, putting up solid numbers but coming up just short when it matters most.
Jan 6, 2021
Listed as full practice participant
Rivers (toe) was listed as a full participant on Wednesday's practice estimate.
ANALYSIS
No surprises here, as Rivers has been managing a turf toe injury and is in no danger of missing Saturday's playoff opener against Buffalo. The veteran QB will take aim this weekend at a Bills defense that allowed an average of 232.9 passing yards per game and 23 TDs via the air this past season.
Jan 5, 2021
Listed as non-participant
Rivers (toe) was listed as a non-participant on Tuesday's practice estimate.
ANALYSIS
Rivers continues to manage a turf toe injury, with listed practice absences having become the norm. He's in no danger of missing Saturday's playoff opener against the Bills.
Jan 3, 2021
Subdued performance in win
Rivers completed 17 of 27 passes for 164 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Colts' 28-14 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. He also netted minus-2 yards on two rushes.
ANALYSIS
With rookie running back Jonathan Taylor exploding for a career-best 253 rushing yards and two touchdowns, Rivers didn't have to much of a load to shoulder. The 17-year veteran did connect with T.Y. Hilton for his one touchdown pass, capping off the Colts' opening drive. However, there wasn't much to write home about from that point forward, but Indianapolis now turns its attention to an extremely tough wild-card-round assignment in the form of the Bills next weekend. Meanwhile, Rivers powered through a nagging turf toe injury to eclipse the 4,000-yard mark for the eighth straight season, and he was able to cut his interception total by nine after tying a career high with 20 picks in his final Chargers season in 2019.
Dec 31, 2020
Puts in full practice
Rivers (toe) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Rivers was given Wednesday's practice off while he continues to manage a turf toe injury, but his return in full capacity a day later clears the way for him to start Week 17 versus the Jaguars. The Colts will need a victory over Jacksonville and a loss by either the Titans, Ravens, Browns or Dolphins to secure a playoff berth, so Rivers won't be a candidate to receive rest in the season finale unless Indianapolis turns the game into a blowout in the second half.
Dec 30, 2020
Sits out practice Wednesday
Rivers (toe) didn't practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
As the veteran QB continues to manage a turf toe injury, Wednesday absences have become the norm for him. With the Colts still in playoff contention and needing to take care of business Sunday against the Jaguars, we have zero doubt that Rivers will be the team's Week 17 starter.
Dec 27, 2020
Takes foot off gas vs. Steelers
Rivers completed 22 of 35 pass attempts for 270 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Rivers moved the offense efficiently in the first half and threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Zach Pascal to help his side build a 14-point lead at the break. Unfortunately, he couldn't get it going in the second half as the Colts failed to score on their last five drives, including one that ended in an interception. Rivers came into the game with a stellar 6:0 TD:INT over his previous three games and will look to finish the regular season on a high note in next Sunday's meeting with the hapless Jaguars.
Dec 24, 2020
Back to practicing fully
Rivers (toe) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Rivers' absence at practice Wednesday was attributed to the turf toe injury he's been managing for several weeks, but his return to full activity a day later suggests he was merely getting some maintenance to begin the week. The veteran quarterback looks well on his way to making his 239th consecutive regular-season start Sunday in Pittsburgh.
Dec 23, 2020
Rested Wednesday
Rivers (toe) was rested at Wednesday's practice, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
Wednesday absences are becoming the norm for Rivers, as he continues to manage a turf toe injury. Look for the veteran QB to return to a full practice Thursday, as he did last week in advance of the Colts' 27-20 win over the Texans this past Sunday.
Dec 20, 2020
Throws pair of touchdowns
Rivers completed 22 of 28 pass attempts for 228 yards and two touchdowns in Week 15 against the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Rivers worked efficiently to lead the Colts to victory. He recorded multiple touchdowns for the fifth consecutive week, both of which went to Zach Pascal. While many of his attempts were to short areas of the field, Rivers did showcase some arm strength on long completions to Pascal and T.Y. Hilton -- the longest of which went for 41 yards. He'll look to maintain his touchdown streak in Week 16 against the Steelers.
Dec 17, 2020
Good to go this week
Rivers (toe) practiced fully Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Rivers continues to manage a toe issue, but despite his absence from practice Wednesday, the QB's status for Sunday's game against the Texans wasn't in doubt. He'll take aim this weekend at a Houston defense that was picked apart by Mitchell Trubisky (267 passing yards and three TDs/zero picks) in the team's 36-7 loss to the Bears in Week 14. Aiding Rivers' cause in Week 15 and beyond is that top wideout T.Y. Hilton has picked up the pace over his last three games and rookie running back Jonathan Taylor has put together back-to-back strong outings.
Dec 16, 2020
Sits out practice Wednesday
Rivers (toe) didn't practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Wednesday absences could become routine for Rivers down the stretch, as he continues to manage a turf toe issue. If last week can be used as a barometer, the veteran QB would be in line to return to a full practice Thursday.
Dec 13, 2020
Throws two TDs vs. Raiders
Rivers completed 19 of 28 pass attempts for 244 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 44-27 win over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Rivers' average of 8.7 yards per attempt was his second-best of the season as he completed an impressive 68 percent of his passes. He also delivered his third game with multiple touchdowns and zero interceptions to take his TD:INT to 9:2 over the last four games. Rivers notably continued his growing rapport with T.Y. Hilton and also benefited from the team's rushing attack generating 212 yards on the day. The veteran is in full command of an offense that is finally humming and should face little resistance next Sunday against a hapless Texans defense.
Dec 11, 2020
Dodges injury report
Rivers does not carry an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Rivers missed practice Wednesday due to the plantar plate rupture in his toe that's plagued him since late November, but he managed to close out the week with back-to-back full practices. The veteran signal-caller may have to make due without standout left tackle Anthony Castonzo (knee), who is listed as questionable to play in Las Vegas, but as consolation he'll get to take on a Raiders secondary missing both Jeff Heath (concussion) and Damon Arnette (concussion).
Dec 10, 2020
Practices without limitations
Rivers (toe) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Kevin Bowen of 1075thefan.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Rivers has dealt with a plantar plate rupture in his toe since Nov. 23, and the issue limited his reps during Wednesday's practice, so it's encouraging to see him back in action without restrictions. The veteran quarterback was never in real danger of missing Sunday's game against the Raiders, but if appears as though he could now be more comfortable moving around in the pocket.
Dec 10, 2020
Returns to practice
Rivers (toe) took part in practice Thursday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
If Rivers follows a similar practice regimen to last week, he'll be a limited participant Thursday after an absence one day prior. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Rivers has been playing through a plantar plate rupture in his toe, an injury that is considered to be worse than turf toe. Consequently, Rivers likely will continue to devote much of his focus on treatment and only get on the practice field when necessary with the Colts in the midst of a playoff push.
Dec 9, 2020
Sits out practice Wednesday
Rivers (toe) won't practice Wednesday, Mike Wells of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells suggests that the Colts may rest Rivers on Wednesdays going forward, as he continues to manage a turf toe issue. Look for the veteran QB to practice in some capacity Thursday.
Dec 6, 2020
Throws two TD passes in win
Rivers completed 27 of 35 pass attempts for 285 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 26-20 win over the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Rivers mark of 8.1 yards per attempt was his best in six games as he completed a masterful 77 percent of his passes. He connected with T.Y. Hilton and Jonathan Taylor for touchdowns, giving him a 7:2 TD:INT over his last three games. Rivers has also averaged 289.3 yards per game over that span and will look to continue his recent excellence in a favorable matchup with the Raiders next Sunday.
Dec 6, 2020
Offseason toe surgery likely
Rivers will continue to play through a plantar plate rupture in his toe during Sunday's game at Houston, but the quarterback is expected to require offseason surgery to address the injury, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Throughout his tenure with the Chargers, Rivers was no stranger to playing at less than 100 percent health, and that trend is set to continue in his first season in Indianapolis after he picked up the painful toe injury in the Colts' Week 11 win over the Packers. According to Rapoport, Rivers' injury is more serious than turf toe, an issue which normally forces players to miss time. Because Rivers isn't reliant on mobility, he likely won't be affected as much as a typical skill-position player, but expect the Colts to continue subbing in backup Jacoby Brissett for the 38-year-old on obvious running downs. Brissett has played 17 total snaps the past two games, notching two goal-line touchdowns that might have otherwise been Rivers passing scores had the veteran stayed on the field.
Dec 4, 2020
Good to go for Week 13
Rivers (toe) doesn't carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Rivers has said all along that he wasn't worried about the toe injury he sustained two weeks ago, and he was able to steadily ramp up his practice participation throughout the week, going from no practice to a limited session before upgrading to full participation Friday. Mobility isn't much of a factor in the veteran quarterback's game, and Rivers has been playing some of his best football recently, posting a 12:4 TD:INT over the past six games after starting his Colts tenure with a 4:5 ratio through five games.
Dec 3, 2020
Returns to limited practice
Rivers (toe) was limited at practice Thursday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
While both Rivers, who missed practice Wednesday, and coach Frank Reich having downplayed the QB's toe issue, Bowen notes that "you saw moments (this past) Sunday when it impacted him." Meanwhile, Rivers' teammate, Quenton Nelson, suggested Thursday that the veteran signal-caller is "playing with a really bad problem with his foot." With that in mind, it's quite possible that Rivers will be listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Texans, but given his record for durability, we'd still expect him to play this weekend.
Dec 3, 2020
Back on the field
Rivers (toe) was spotted at practice Thursday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran signal-caller sat out Wednesday's session, but his return to the field Thursday suggests that he'll continue to play through his toe issue Sunday against the Texans. The Colts' upcoming injury report will reveal Rivers' level of participation in his return to practice.
Dec 2, 2020
Sits out practice Wednesday
Rivers (toe) didn't practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Rivers approached this past Sunday's 45-26 loss to the Titans with a questionable tag, but the QB played through his toe issue. With no reported setbacks in the contest, we'll assume that Rivers' Wednesday absence is maintenance-related. The veteran signal caller holds the league's longest active consecutive starts streak.
Nov 29, 2020
Plenty of volume in blowout loss
Rivers completed 24 of 42 pass attempts for 295 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Week 12 against the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Rivers and the Colts were stuck playing from behind as the Titans offense easily moved down the field for the entire first half. As a result, he topped 40 pass attempts for the fourth time this season and fell just short of topping 300 yards. While he was able to toss touchdown passes of 11 and five yards, Jacoby Brissett was brought in on the goal line to score two touchdowns of his own. Rivers should have a chance for another high-paced shootout in Week 13 against the Texans.
Nov 29, 2020
Good to go Week 12
Rivers (toe) is active for Sunday's game against the Titans, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
Rivers only managed one limited practice this week while managing the toe injury, but the Colts never seemed to have any real concern that the veteran quarterback would be unable to play Sunday. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Rivers looked good in his return to practice Friday, and coach Frank Reich said he didn't anticipate the toe being an issue for the 38-year-old in the Week 12 contest. Fantasy managers can probably feel comfortable with deploying Rivers as they normally would.
Nov 29, 2020
Expected to play Sunday
Rivers (toe) -- who's listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Titans -- looked good at practice Friday, with coach Frank Reich telling Tom Pelissero of NFL Network that it doesn't appear as though the QB's injured toe will be an issue Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Confirmation of Rivers' Week 12 status will arrive upon the release of the Colts' inactives in advance of Sunday's 1:00 ET kickoff, but it appears as though he'll give it a go and shouldn't be hampered too much by his toe issue, so long as he's able to avoid an in-game setbacks.
Nov 27, 2020
Listed as questionable
Rivers (toe) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Titans after returning to a limited practice Friday.
ANALYSIS
Rivers was listed as a non-participant at practice Wednesday and on Thursday's estimate, but his return to the field Friday suggests that veteran quarterback, who holds the league's longest active consecutive starts streak, should be a go for Sunday's 1:00 ET tilt. Rivers is backed up by Jacoby Brissett and Jacob Eason.
Nov 26, 2020
Plans to practice Friday
Rivers (toe) was listed as a non-participant on Thursday's practice estimate.
ANALYSIS
Rivers sat out practice Wednesday, but Zak Keefer of The Athletic relays that the veteran signal caller plans to practice Friday and if that happens, look for him to be a go Sunday against the Titans.
Nov 25, 2020
No practice Wednesday
Rivers (toe) won't practice Wednesday, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
That said, coach Frank Reich noted Wednesday that the veteran QB could "probably could practice and be limited," but the team is "going to play it safe and let (Thursday's) day of rest help." With that, Rivers' status for Sunday's game against the Titans should be monitored, but we still expect him to suit up this weekend.
Nov 23, 2020
Toe soreness lingering
Coach Frank Reich said Monday that Rivers is dealing with a sore toe, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
Reich said "we'll see how [Rivers] responds this week." The veteran quarterback managed to stay in for the entirety of Sunday's narrow win over the Packers, but he was clearly hobbled by injury late in the game. It doesn't currently look as though Rivers is in any danger of missing time, but the extent of his participation in Wednesday's practice will be worth monitoring. Rivers has a 7:2 TD:INT since Indianapolis' bye.
Nov 22, 2020
Leads Colts to another win
Rivers completed 24 of 36 passes for 288 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Week 11 against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Rivers went toe-to-toe with Aaron Rodgers, logging his second consecutive 300-yard effort. Unlike the previous game, Rivers also threw for three touchdowns that went for 45, 17, and six yards. He spread the ball out to all of his pass-catching weapons, as no player received more than six targets and seven players commanded at least three targets. Rivers will look to keep his strong form as he and the Colts will draw a rematch against the Titans in Week 12.
Nov 12, 2020
Stellar, mistake-free in win
Rivers completed 29 of 39 passes for 308 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the Colts' 34-17 win over the Titans on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Rivers parlayed the stellar protection he received from his offensive line -- he was sacked once and hit just twice overall -- to put together his third 300-yard effort of the campaign. After the Colts gave up the ball on downs on their first possession, Rivers helped lead them to points on each of the remaining first-half possessions, and despite Indianapolis falling short on another fourth down to cap a 15-play drive early in the third quarter, the veteran quarterback was able to subsequently help drive them down for one more score early in the final period. Rivers benefited from having the trio of T.Y. Hilton, Michael Pittman and Zach Pascal all healthy for the first time since Week 3, and he'll look to carry over Thursday's momentum into a Week 11 interconference showdown against the Packers on Sunday, Nov. 22.
Nov 8, 2020
Comes up short in loss
Rivers completed 25 of 43 passes for 227 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the Colts' 24-10 loss to the Ravens on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Following back-to-back three-touchdown efforts, Rivers fell back to earth against a tough Ravens defense. The veteran quarterback was held without a touchdown for only the second time this season, and a total of five Indianapolis drives ended in either punts (four) or on downs (one). Rivers was playing without T.Y. Hilton (groin) and also lost Jack Doyle to a concussion in the first quarter, so in fairness, he was playing with a depleted pass-catching corps. Rivers and his teammates will look to regroup quickly ahead of a Thursday night Week 10 divisional battle against the Titans, but the short week will make it difficult for both Hilton and Doyle to suit up.
Nov 1, 2020
Throws three TD passes
Rivers completed 23 of 33 pass attempts for 262 yards and three touchdowns during Sunday's 41-21 win over the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Rivers connected on 70 percent of his passes while spreading the ball around to an impressive 11 different receivers. He tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Nyheim Hines and added another to Jack Doyle, giving him six touchdowns compared to one interception over the last two games. Rivers is in the midst of his best football of the season but will face a difficult matchup next Sunday against the Ravens.
Oct 18, 2020
Throws three TD passes vs. Bengals
Rivers completed 29 of 44 pass attempts for 371 yards, three touchdowns and one interception during Sunday's 29-44 win over the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Rivers struggled to get going in the first quarter and found his side trailing by 21 points early in the second quarter. He responded with his best yardage output of the season and connected with three different receivers for his first multi-touchdown effort in a Colts uniform. The veteran came in with a poor TD:INT of 4:5 and hadn't topped 250 passing yards since Week 1, so this was a positive sign for fantasy managers that stuck with him through the poor start. He'll use the upcoming bye week to build on this breakout effort before taking on a beatable Lions defense in Week 8.
Oct 16, 2020
Team facilities reopening
Rivers and the Colts can return to team facilities Friday afternoon with additional test results for COVID-19 coming back negative
ANALYSIS
The team's facilities were shut down for the morning after four members of the organization showed positive test results, but the additional testing came back negative, clearing the facility to be reopened. The Colts game against the Bengals on Sunday will be played as scheduled, barring further developments.
Oct 14, 2020
Remains starter
Colts head coach Frank Reich said Monday that Rivers will remain the team's starting quarterback, Mike Wells of ESPN.com reports. "No consideration of [replacing Rivers with backup Jacoby Brissett]," Reich said. "Philip is our quarterback."
ANALYSIS
Rivers' job security was called into question after he turned in a dismal outing in Sunday's 32-23 loss to the Browns, as the 38-year-old completed 21 of 33 attempts for 243 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Rivers was also penalized for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety. Though he already has a pair of two-interception games under his belt this season, Rivers has at least fared well in terms of passing efficiency, completing a career-high 70.8 percent of his throws for a respectable 8.0 yards per attempt. While he'll still likely need to rein in the turnovers to ensure he maintains his spot atop the depth chart all season, Rivers' track record and $25 million salary should give him a decent amount of leash.
Oct 11, 2020
Commits two turnovers in loss
Rivers completed 21 of 33 pass attempts for 243 yards and two interceptions during Sunday's 32-23 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Rivers threw a pick-six on the first drive of the third quarter and later added another interception as his team looked to cut the lead to two in the fourth. It was the poorest performance of the season for Rivers, who had led his team to three straight wins while committing just one turnover in that stretch. Rivers notably displayed an improved connection with T.Y. Hilton in this one and will look to bounce back in a more favorable matchup next Sunday against the Bengals.
Oct 4, 2020
Uninspiring in win
Rivers completed 16 of 29 passes for 190 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Week 4 against Chicago.
ANALYSIS
The Colts played from ahead for the majority of the contest, meaning Rivers and the passing attack didn't need to be aggressive. Rivers' touchdown came on the team's first offensive possession, when he connected with Mo Alie-Cox for a 13-yard score. From there, Rivers orchestrated four drives that ended with field goals and no more trips to the end zone. One positive is that Rivers has taken care of the ball, throwing zero interceptions in the last two weeks. He should be in for a positive matchup in Week 5, as the Colts take on the Browns.
Sep 27, 2020
Racks up milestones in win
Rivers completed 17 of 21 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 36-7 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
With the Colts' defense accounting for 14 points on its own thanks to two pick-sixes and a safety, Rivers wasn't called on to do too much after finding Mo Alie-Cox for a TD in the second quarter. Still, his production was enough to move him up the all-time rankings in a number of categories: he's the sixth QB in league history with 400 touchdown passes, the sixth with over 60,000 passing yards, and he passed Dan Marino for fifth in career completions, needing only 20 more to reach 5,000. Rivers should face a much tougher test in Week 4 on the road against a Bears defense that just shut Matt Ryan down in the second half of their comeback win in Atlanta.
Sep 20, 2020
Produces lackluster numbers
Rivers completed 19 of 25 pass attempts for 214 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Sunday's 28-11 win over the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Although Rivers managed a respectable average of 8.6 yards per attempt against a vulnerable Vikings secondary, he finished with just 25 attempts as the Colts relied on the running game to control the win. He threw a short touchdown pass to Zach Pascal to add a slight boost to his fantasy production, but he still finished with lackluster numbers overall and now has a 2:3 TD:INT through two games. Rivers will enjoy a favorable matchup next Sunday against the Jets and will look to jumpstart his season after mixed results in the early going.
Sep 13, 2020
Shaky in Colts debut
Rivers completed 36 of 46 passes for 363 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Week 1 against the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Rivers racked up yards and attempts as the Colts attempted to make a comeback. His lone touchdown pass came in the second quarter on an eight-yard pass to Nyheim Hines. However, he also threw two interceptions, one late in the fourth quarter that was a major blow to the team's rally. Rivers will look to bounce back in the Colts' Week 2 matchup against the Vikings.
Aug 25, 2020
Looks sharp in scrimmage
Rivers was 19-of-28 passing in Monday's scrimmage at Lucas Oil Stadium. He targeted T.Y. Hilton for five receptions and has been frequently targeting running backs and tight ends in the passing game, Kevin Bowen of 93.5 FM The Fan Indianapolis reports.
ANALYSIS
While it's hard to read too much into a scrimmage, reports on Rivers in training camp have been positive so far. He appears to be building a rapport with Hilton, though he didn't particuarly target any other receivers in Monday's scrimmage. Rivers has been seen throwing a high percentage of his passes on shorter routes to running backs and tight ends, which could be a sign of a focus on taking what the defense gives him after his turnover issues last season (20 interceptions).

Could stay in Indy past 2019
Coach Frank Reich is optimistic Rivers will play more than one season for the Colts, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
ANALYSIS
Rivers had one of his worst seasons in 2019 and then signed a one-year, $25 million contract with Indianapolis. While both factors may hint at a short relationship, it sounds like the Colts will try to keep Rivers around if he rebounds in his age-38 season ahead. Already boasting an elite offensive line, the team added USC wideout Michael Pittman and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor in the second round of last month's draft. A better running game than the one he had in Los Angeles could provide Rivers with more red-zone chances, but it also means he's unlikely to approach his 2019 total of 591 pass attempts.

Familiar with Indy offense
Coach Frank Reich believes Rivers will know "80-to-85 percent" of the Colts' offense before he even walks in the door, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Reich points to the 38-year-old's experience and intelligence as clear assets, even mentioning that he came to prefer Rivers over Tom Brady after watching tape of both veteran quarterbacks. There's also an element of familiarity, as Reich was the Chargers' offensive coordinator in 2014 and 2015 -- a two-year stretch in which Rivers averaged 4,539 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and 15.5 interceptions while completing 66.3 percent of his throws for 7.4 YPA. Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni was the QBs coach for those teams, and he spent two more years with the Chargers after Reich left for Philadelphia in 2016.

Headed for Indy
Rivers and the Colts have reached agreement on a one-year deal, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
With that, the 38-year-old is slated to take over the Colts' starting QB job from Jacoby Brissett. Rivers is coming off a 2019 campaign in which he threw for 4,615 yards with 23 TDs and 20 picks in 16 games for the Chargers.

Working toward Indy deal?
Rivers is talking with the Colts, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
This has been a steady rumor throughout the offseason, with the Colts hoping to upgrade on Jacoby Brissett but not necessarily desperate to do so, i.e., they'll only sign a veteran QB if the price is right. Rivers has history with Colts head coach Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni, both of whom worked for the Chargers for multiple seasons.

Won't return to Chargers
Rivers will become an unrestricted free agent in March and will not re-sign with the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
The Chargers announced the decision in a press release, suggesting that both parties agreed to go their separate ways. Rivers showed obvious signs of decline in 2019, but he still figures to draw interest as a potential starter on the open market, with potential destinations including Tampa Bay, Indianapolis and Chicago. The 38-year-old quarterback spent 16 years with the Chargers, including 14 consecutive seasons in which he started all 16 games. The team has Tyrod Taylor and Easton Stick under contract at quarterback for 2020, with potential to add a young signal caller in the upcoming draft.

Unlikely to stay with Chargers
Jay Glazer of FOX Sports believes the Chargers have "moved on" from Rivers, per independent reporter Dov Kleiman.
ANALYSIS
The 38-year-old quarterback is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on the heels of a 5-11 season in which he tossed 20 interceptions. The Chargers otherwise have a fairly young roster that includes some premium talent, and they even have an insurance plan with fellow quarterback Tyrod Taylor under contract through 2020. Perhaps sensing the writing on the wall, Rivers recently relocated his family from San Diego to Florida. He already said he doesn't intend to retire, so the move might be taken as a hint that he hopes to play for a team on the East Coast.

Moves to Florida
Rivers, who had been living in San Diego, has relocated "permanently" to Florida in order to be closer to his family, Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
"What this means football-wise is to be determined but it was time for us to move back closer to home," said Rivers, who is slated to become a free agent this offseason. While there's a very real possibility that the 38-year-old has played his last game for the Chargers, Rivers -- who was backed up by Tyrod Taylor this past season -- does plan to play somewhere in 2020.

Listed as limited Wednesday
Rivers (right thumb) was listed as limited on Wednesday's practice/injury report.
ANALYSIS
We'll circle back on Rivers' status Thursday, but so far there's nothing to suggest that the veteran QB's availability for Sunday's game against the Chiefs is in any danger.
