Hudson spent much of last season on Cincinnati's practice squad but eventually emerged as the top pass catcher at tight end amidst a disappointing season for free-agent acquisition Irv Smith (who has since moved on to Kansas City). The Bengals signed Mike Gesicki and re-signed Drew Sample earlier this week, ensuring Hudson will again have to fight for his playing time. Sample figures to do a lot of the blocking, likely leaving Hudson and Gesicki to compete for slot work and playing time in obvious passing situations.

Hudson finished with 39 catches for 352 yards and one touchdown in 12 games for the Bengals in 2023.

All those numbers were career highs as Hudson finished the season as Cincinnati's top tight end. The fifth-year pro will be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. The Bengals do not yet have any tight ends under contract for 2024.

Hudson had as 25 offensive snaps in the win, equaling the total of offensive snaps the two previous weeks. He's the primary pass-catching tight end option for the Bengals, but not the solo option.

Hudson put the Bengals ahead on Sunday in the third quarter of their win against the Colts with a short touchdown catch and netted two catches for 21 yards on the three targets.

Hudson's snap share has decreased after peaking 36 percent in Week 11, but he still found a way to make an impact on Sunday. He had just 13 offensive snaps against the Colts.

Hudson played 13 of the Bengals' 43 snaps on offense and finished with four catches for 18 yards on five targets in Sunday's 16-10 loss to the Steelers.

The Bengals opened with Drew Sample (one catch for an 11-yard touchdown) and Mitchell Wilcox (one catch for one yard) as their starting tight ends, but Hudson ended up outproducing both players as well as Irv Smith (two catches for eight yards) in terms of pure volume in the passing game. Hudson looks to be Cincinnati's top pass-catching tight end, but his ceiling is limited by having to share snaps with three other options at the position as well as having the relatively unproven Jake Browning as his quarterback rather than Joe Burrow (wrist). Additionally, Hudson's involvement in the passing game could take a further hit whenever wideout Tee Higgins (hamstring) -- who has missed the last three games -- is back in action.

Even with his increased opportunity, the 29-year-old was unable to get much going in the way of relevant fantasy production. Hudson will look to build upon this performance in trying to carve out a more prominent role on offense when the Bengals visit the Ravens in Week 11.

This production came completely out of the blue from Hudson, as he had been inactive the three previous games and only signed from the practice squad on Wednesday. But the Bengals got production from all three tight ends in the passing game, seeing an opening against the Bills.

Hudson was elevated from the practice squad in Weeks 3 and 4 while Irv Smith dealt with a hamstring injury, and the 6-foot-5 tight end held his own with four catches for 48 yards on six targets between those two games. The 30 receiving yards Hudson compiled Week 3 are more than Smith has had in any game this season. Smith also lost a fumble in this past Sunday's win over the 49ers, so perhaps Hudson can carve out a sizable pass-catching role if the Cincinnati coaching staff is unhappy with Smith's production.

Hudson recorded two receptions for 23 yards on three targets in Sunday's 19-16 win over the Panthers.

The pair of receptions were Hudson's first since the 2020 campaign, when he recorded a 3-41-0 receiving line on seven targets over 11 games for the Buccaneers. Rookie Daniel Bellinger remains the Giants' top tight end, but with snap shares barely north of 50 percent in both of his first two games, he's not necessarily entrenched atop the depth chart. Even if Hudson ends up poaching more snaps from Bellinger, the 27-year-old is still expected to primarily serve as a blocker whenever he's on the field.
