Three receptions in loss
Hockenson had three receptions for 39 yards on six targets in Sunday's loss to Chicago.
ANALYSIS
There were some encouraging signs for Hockenson as the Vikings offense used him more in short routes over the middle that were lacking in quarterback J.J. McCarthy's previous starts. However, McCarthy and the passing game struggled overall, which limits Hockenson's upside. McCarthy was just 16-of-32 passing as he struggled with accuracy and had two interceptions.

Just two receptions in loss
Hockenson had two receptions for eight yards on two targets in Sunday's loss to Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson hasn't had much action with J.J. McCarthy at quarterback as he's had just 12 targets in his four games behind center. He's not blocking more with Josh Oliver sidelined (foot) as he went out on a route on 44 of his 58 snaps on offense, so there's some hope for an increase in receptions.
Nov 3, 2025
Scores TD in Week 9 win
Hockenson had two receptions for 11 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown, on three targets in Sunday's win at Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson played on 48 of the offense's 62 snaps and went out for a pass on 28 of them, which was about his usual pattern. However, quarterback J.J. McCarthy attempted just 25 passes, which didn't leave a lot of targets for the receiving corps after Justin Jefferson (nine targets). It's promising that McCarthy looked for Hockenson in the red zone.
Oct 24, 2025
Just two receptions in loss
Hockenson had two receptions for 26 yards on three targets in Thursday's loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Minnesota's offense struggled against the Chargers as Carson Wentz was sacked five times amid an injury-depleted offensive line. There were few opportunities for Hockenson as a result. He did go out on a route on 30 of his 40 snaps on offense, so he was involved in the passing game when the team fell far behind.
Oct 19, 2025
Sees TD catch erased in loss
Hockenson brought in six of nine targets for 43 yards in the Vikings' 28-22 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The veteran tight end finished second on the Vikings in receptions and third in both receiving yards and targets. Hockenson's final line would have looked a lot better had a diving attempt at a touchdown catch that he made with just over three minutes remaining would have survived instant replay review. Hockenson did match his season high in receptions and set a new high-water mark in targets, so he's trending up heading into an intriguing Week 8 road matchup against the Chargers on Thursday night.
Oct 5, 2025
Six grabs in London victory
Hockenson brought in all six targets for 38 yards in the Vikings' 21-17 win over the Browns in London on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The veteran tight end continued to play a short-area role and finished as the runner-up in receptions for the Vikings while also tying for second in targets. Hockenson provided some key contributions on the Vikings' game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter, making two catches for 20 yards during the possession. Hockenson has between four and six receptions in his last three games, but he's yet to top 49 receiving yards in any contest this season heading into the Week 6 bye.
Sep 28, 2025
Pads stats late in loss
Hockenson recorded four receptions on five targets for 39 yards in Sunday's 24-21 loss to the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson wasn't targeted until just before halftime and didn't make his first catch until the Vikings' first drive of the fourth quarter. However, he saw plenty of opportunity in short areas of the field in the final 10 minutes of the game as Minnesota attempted to rally from a two-score deficit. Though Hockenson ended up with a respectable line on five targets, Jordan Addison's return predictably appears to have cut into his target volume.
Sep 21, 2025
Scores TD in Week 3 win
Hockenson brought in five of six targets for 49 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' 48-10 win over the Bengals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The veteran tight end had put together a quiet first two games of the season, mustering just a 4-27-0 line on seven targets. However, Hockenson tied for the team lead in receptions Sunday while checking in second in both receiving yards and targets as well as he worked with Carson Wentz for the first time. Hockenson also got into the end zone for the first time in 2025 on a five-yard grab late in the third quarter, and with the veteran quarterback likely due to for another in next Sunday's Week 4 matchup against the Steelers in Dublin, Ireland considering J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is still expected to be sidelined for that contest.
Sep 15, 2025
Held to one catch Sunday
Hockenson had one reception for 12 yards in Sunday's 22-6 loss to the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson caught just 33 percent of his targets in a low-volume night of offense from Minnesota, resulting in a mediocre stat line for fantasy managers. The receiving tight end is averaging just two receptions and 13.5 yards in two games with 2025 starting QB J.J. McCarthy. That is a concerning trend for a player hoping to bounce back from a lackluster 2024 campaign. Hockenson's next opportunity to right the ship will come in a home game against Cincinnati next Sunday.
Sep 9, 2025
Three catches in Week 1 win
Hockenson secured three of four targets for 15 yards in the Vikings' 27-24 win over the Bears on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
The Vikings' passing attack was mostly quiet the majority of the night as J.J. McCarthy made his NFL regular-season debut, helping lead to a modest showing for the veteran tight end. Hockenson entered the season with elevated expectations considering he's now nearly two years removed from suffering multiple knee ligament tears in Week 16 of the 2023 season, but his production will naturally be largely dependent on how quickly McCarthy gets his feet under him. Hockenson will next take aim at the Falcons defense in a Week 2 home matchup on Sunday night.

Plays in preseason opener
Hockenson started at tight end and played eight snaps on offense, but wasn't targeted in the passing game in Saturday's preseason win over Houston, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Hockenson missed time in practice earlier this week with a hip flexor.
ANALYSIS
It was surprising to see Hockenson play in the first preseason game given his injury scare earlier in the week. Even though he didn't do much in the game, it shows he's ready for the regular season.
Aug 6, 2025
Back at practice
Hockenson (leg/hip/back) will practice Wednesday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson exited Saturday's practice with a noticeable limp and then didn't practice Monday due to a combination of leg, hip and back injuries. He may operate only in a limited capacity Wednesday, but he'll have another session Thursday before the team will need to make a decision regarding whether he takes the field along with second-year QB J.J. McCarthy for Saturday's preseason game against the Texans.
Aug 4, 2025
Sitting out practice
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Hockenson (leg/hip/back) won't take part in Monday's practice, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson sustained a lower-body injury at Saturday's session that caused a noticeable limp. He's being listed with leg, hip and back issues as of Monday, during which he'll sit out drills, so it's be interesting to see if he can handle any work at practice Wednesday or Thursday. While second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy is expected to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Texans, it's unclear if Hockenson will be out there, even if he was healthy enough to suit up.
Aug 2, 2025
Dealing with apparent groin injury
Hockenson suffered an apparent groin injury during practice Saturday and was walking with a noticeable limp afterward, Andrew Krammer of the Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was evaluated and tried to work through the injury on the field, but he was unable to do so. He told reporters after practice that he would be alright, but he may be in line to miss additional practice time.
Jan 14, 2025
Paces pass catchers in loss
Hockenson brought in all five targets for 64 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' 27-9 wild-card loss to the Rams on Monday night. He finished the regular season with 41 receptions for 455 yards on 62 targets over 10 games.
ANALYSIS
The veteran tight end was one of the few bright spots in the disappointing season-ending loss, bringing in Sam Darnold's only touchdown pass of the night from 26 yards out with just over five minutes remaining in the game. It was an encouraging finish for Hockenson amid a disappointing team outcome, as he missed the first seven games of the season while completing his recovering from multiple ligament tears in his knee that he'd suffered late in the 2023 season. Hockenson seemingly worked back to full health down the stretch and even recorded one 100-yard performance, which should leave him poised for a big 2025 season as he likely begins working with J.J. McCarthy (knee) as his quarterback.
Jan 6, 2025
Struggles with eight targets
Hockenson had two receptions on eight targets for nine yards in Sunday's 31-9 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Horrible catch rates was the theme for the Vikings' receiving unit in Sunday's NFC North battle for the No. 1 seed in the conference. Hockenson, Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison combined for just six receptions on 23 targets (26 percent catch rate) in quarterback Sam Darnold's worst game of an otherwise impressive season. The 28-year-old Hockenson finishes the regular season with 41 receptions, 455 yards and no touchdowns in an injury-shortened campaign. Minnesota's entire offense will try to get back on track ahead of next Monday's wild-card round matchup against the Rams.
Dec 29, 2024
Racks up 68 yards
Hockenson recorded five receptions on six targets for 68 yards in Sunday's 27-25 win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson recorded his highest yardage total since Week 12, highlighted by a 28-yard grab up the seam to help set up a field goal just before halftime. While his yardage totals haven't been particularly impressive, Hockenson's role has been consistent as he has at least five targets in six straight contests.
Dec 23, 2024
Finishes with 27 yards Sunday
Hockenson had two receptions on five targets for 27 yards in Sunday's 27-24 win over the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson struggled to put up big numbers Sunday, finishing with his second-lowest receiving total of the season against Seattle. The 26-year-old has been held scoreless in eight starts this season, resulting in middling statistics for a shallow fantasy position. Hockenson and his managers will hope for better results against Green Bay next Sunday.
Dec 16, 2024
Five-catch effort Monday
Hockenson brought in five of seven targets for 52 yards in the Vikings' 30-12 win over the Bears on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson played third wheel in the air attack to Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, but the veteran tight end still turned in a solid line that featured his second-highest catch total since Week 10. Hockenson also drew the second-most targets of any of his first seven games since his delayed season debut, and he should once again garner a fair amount of Sam Darnold's attention in a Week 16 road trip to Seattle.
Dec 8, 2024
Four catches in Week 14 win
Hockenson secured four of five targets for 45 yards in the Vikings' 42-21 win over the Falcons on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The veteran tight end was quiet throughout most of the afternoon, but he opened the second half with catches of 10 and 18 yards on the Vikings' first possession of the third quarter. Hockenson's reception total was the third highest of his injury-delayed season, as was his yardage tally. Hockenson and the Vikings next welcome in the Bears for a Week 15 home matchup on Monday night, Dec. 16.
Dec 4, 2024
Just three receptions in win
Hockenson had three receptions for 28 yards on six targets in Sunday's win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson didn't produce much yardage but he was still tied for second on the team in targets. He should rebound next week against Atlanta. One concern is that he has just five targets inside the 20-yard line this season and no targets inside the five-yard line. He hasn't been part of the Red Zone mix so far this season.
Nov 24, 2024
Breaks out against Bears
Hockenson recorded seven receptions on nine targets for 114 yards in Sunday's 30-27 overtime win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson gained a combined 112 yards in his first three games of the season, though he had an explosive performance in Sunday's win with three receptions of at least 20 yards. It was also his first 100-yard performance since Week 10 of the 2023 season. The Vikings talked up Hockenson's role heading into Sunday's matchup, particularly with Josh Oliver (ankle) sidelined, and he should start to see a more consistent role moving forward.
Nov 22, 2024
Playing time likely to trend upward
Hockenson said Friday that he expects his playing time to start trending upward over the course of the remainder of the season, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has played just under 50 percent of the offensive snaps in each of the three games he's played in since his activation from the reserve/PUP list, but that was by design, according to the Vikings' star tight end. With Josh Oliver (ankle) battling an injury, Hockenson has been seeing more practice reps in packages he hasn't played in since his 2024 debut in Week 9. Getting on the field more should directly lead to an increase in routes and potential targets, raising both Hockenson's fantasy floor and ceiling.
Nov 18, 2024
Just two receptions in win
Hockenson had two receptions for 13 yards on three targets in Sunday's win at Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was on the field with the starters and played on 35 of the offense's 73 snaps, going out on 25 routes. After drawing nine targets in his previous game, he wasn't utilized as much against the Titans which was a surprise since he's likely just getting back to full speed in his third game since returning from a torn ACL. He played the same share of snaps (45%) as his two previous games, so it's possible he could see increased usage as the season progresses.
Nov 10, 2024
Paces pass catchers in win
Hockenson recorded eight receptions on nine targets for 72 yards in Sunday's 12-7 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Sunday marked Hockenson's second game since returning from a torn ACL, but he quickly emerged as a favorite option for Sam Darnold. He tied for the team lead with nine targets and easily led the unit in yardage. Hockenson's longest gain came on a 26-yard catch and run early in the fourth quarter to set Minnesota up for the game-winning field goal. He has the potential to be one of the most impactful players at the position down the stretch, particularly if Darnold continues to struggle when pushing the ball down the field.
Nov 4, 2024
Three catches in return
Hockenson (knee) caught three of four targets for 27 yards in Sunday's 21-13 win over the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson returned from a lengthy recovery from surgery to his MCL and ACL tendons dating back to a Dec. 24 injury in the 2023 season. The star tight end was eased back into action with just four targets Sunday, but he figures to see his workload increase as the season progresses. Make sure Hockenson is rostered in your league, as he could provide significant value at a shallow fantasy position. A road game against Jacksonville is on deck for the Vikings.
Nov 1, 2024
Ready to return to action
Hockenson (knee) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's game against the Colts.
ANALYSIS
With a trio of full practices behind him this week, Hockenson is poised for his first game action since he tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee Dec. 24. With Hockenson healthy, QB Sam Darnold will have his full allotment of skill-position talent available this weekend, namely WR Justin Jefferson, RB Aaron Jones, Hockenson and WR Jordan Addison.
Oct 30, 2024
Logs full practice Wednesday
Hockenson (knee) practiced fully Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
After the Vikings designated Hockenson for return from the reserve/PUP list on Oct. 4, they had two chances to activate him for game action but opted not to do so. The team then brought him back to the active roster last Friday, and he now is practicing without limitations for the first time since tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee last December. Hockenson thus has reclaimed his spot atop the TE depth chart for Minnesota as the team begins preparations for Sunday's contest agains the Colts.
Oct 25, 2024
Activated from PUP list
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell announced Friday that Hockenson (knee) has been reinstated from the PUP list.
ANALYSIS
In a corresponding move, Minnesota placed left tackle Christian Darrisaw (knee) on injured reserve to clear a spot on the 53-man roster for Hockenson. After suffering ACL and MCL tears last December and undergoing surgery on his right knee in January, Hockenson was sidelined for the start of the season before he was cleared to practice Oct. 4. With his 21-day evaluation window officially closing Friday, the Vikings added Hockenson back to the roster in anticipation that he'll be ready to make his 2024 debut next Sunday versus the Colts. Considering that Hockenson hadn't advanced beyond limited participation since he resumed practicing earlier this month, he'll likely need to put in at least one full practice during the upcoming week before the Vikings officially clear him to play against Indianapolis.
Oct 24, 2024
Won't play Week 8, should be back Week 9
The Vikings downgraded Hockenson (knee) to out for Thursday's game at the Rams, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson's 21-day practice window wraps up Friday, but the team intends to activate him from the reserve/PUP list before the 4:00 p.m. ET deadline and have him available for a Week 9 matchup agains the Colts on Sunday, Nov. 3. He tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee last season on Dec. 24, so he's exactly 10 months removed from sustaining the injuries.
Oct 23, 2024
Officially questionable for TNF
Hockenson (knee), who remains on the reserve/PUP list Wednesday, is officially listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson will need to be officially activated from the reserve/PUP list in order to be eligible to play Thursday, but it seems the team hasn't yet committed to a decision on the standout tight end's status for Week 8. Given that Hockenson is working his way back from ACL and MCL tears sustained last season, fantasy managers will need to be wary of the real possibility that he's worked in slowly even once cleared to retake the field, though. The Vikings officially opened Hockenson's 21-day practice window Oct. 4, and he's been listed as limited in practice since.
Oct 21, 2024
Estimated as limited Monday
Hockenson (knee) was estimated as limited on Monday's practice report.
ANALYSIS
The Vikings didn't actually hold a practice Monday but are required to release an injury report since they play the Rams this upcoming Thursday night. Speaking with the media Monday, coach Kevin O'Connell wasn't ready to say if Hockenson would be activated from the reserve/PUP list in time for Thursday, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
Oct 19, 2024
Not playing Week 7
Hockenson (knee) was downgraded to out and will not play Sunday against the Lions, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
This isn't entirely surprising as head coach Kevin O'Connell was not committal about Hockenson making his season debut Sunday when asked by reporters earlier this week. The talented tight end will aim to be available Week 8 against the Rams.
Oct 18, 2024
Listed as questionable
Hockenson (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson returned to practice two weeks ago, Oct. 4, and the Vikings will now need to activate him by Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET if he's going to play this Sunday. Fantasy managers should thus have a decision on his availability at least 21 hours before the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff Sunday, although Hockenson won't be same lineup lock he was in past years for what would be his first game back from ACL and MCL tears. He said Thursday that he still wasn't sure if he'd play this weekend.
Oct 17, 2024
Another limited session
Hockenson (knee) was limited at Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson is nearing the end of his second week of the 21-day window in which the Vikings have to evaluate him and eventually activate him from the reserve/PUP list. So far, he's logged three consecutive capped sessions going back to Oct. 4, and he even spoke about his odds to play Sunday against the Lions. "Yeah, I don't know," Hockenson told Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Thursday. "I mean, it all depends day to day. ... As long as I'm feeling good and rolling, we'll just keep it there." The Vikings will need to activate Hockenson by Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET in order for him to have a chance to suit up this weekend, but first Friday's injury report will reveal if he has a designation for Sunday's contest.
Oct 16, 2024
Stays limited at practice
Hockenson (knee) was a limited practice participant Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The Vikings designated Hockenson for a return from the reserve/PUP list on Friday, Oct. 4, and he managed a capped session that day. Following the team's Week 6 bye, he's maintained that activity level to begin this week, so he may have to get back to full participation Thursday or Friday for Minnesota to feel comfortable bringing him back to the active roster.
Oct 4, 2024
Limited practice, won't play in game
Hockenson (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Jets after returning to practice Friday as a limited participant, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
There was probably never any chance the Vikings would rush Hockenson back into action right before a Week 6 bye. The question is whether he'll be ready for Week 7 against the Lions (Oct. 20) or a Week 8 game against the Rams (Oct. 24) four days later. That's presumably what the Vikings expect, as it otherwise wouldn't make any sense to open Hockenson's 21-day practice window Friday instead of waiting until next week or the week after.
Oct 4, 2024
Officially designated for return
The Vikings announced Friday that Hockenson (knee) has been designated to return to practice from the reserve/PUP list.
ANALYSIS
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell has made clear that Minnesota's plan was to get Hockenson back on the practice field Friday, after traveling with the team to London in preparation for Sunday's matchup against the Jets. That gives the Vikings a 21-day window to monitor Hockenson at practice. The standout tight end can be activated at any point in that span, and then be eligible for gamedays, though it doesn't seem like he's in consideration for Sunday's contest against New York. After a Week 6 bye, the Vikings will play two games in quick succession, facing the Lions on Sunday, Oct. 20, and the Rams on Thursday, Oct. 24. Hockenson, who is recovering from right ACL and MCL tears sustained late last December, could more realistically make his return to play in one of those contests.
Oct 2, 2024
Practice window to open Friday
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said Wednesday the team plans to designate Hockenson (knee) for a return to practice Friday, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson spent the first four games of the regular season on the reserve/PUP list while working his way back from right ACL and MCL tears sustained Dec. 24 of last season. Minnesota plans for Hockenson to travel with the team to London, ahead of Sunday's game against the Jets, and have his first practice session Friday. At that time, Hockenson's official 21-day practice window will open. Hockenson doesn't seem to be in consideration to face New York on Sunday, after which point the Vikings will benefit from a bye week. The team hasn't yet offered a definitive timetable for Hockenson's return, but Oct. 20 versus the Lions in Week 7 and Oct. 24 against the Rams in Week 8 could be in play.
Sep 27, 2024
May practice next week
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Friday that the Vikings will discuss whether to open Hockenson's (knee) window next week when he's first eligible to practice, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Minnesota placed Hockenson on the reserve/PUP list on cut-down day Aug. 27, thus ruling him out for the first four games of the campaign as he continued his recovery from ACL and MCL tears that he suffered in his right knee on Dec. 24 of last season. During Week 1 prep, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that the team was believed to be targeting a return for Hockenson following the team's Week 6 bye, and now that seems to be the likely goal because the Vikings' Week 5 matchup with the Jets will be taking place in London at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, whose surface is synthetic for NFL games. If Minnesota takes such a course with Hockenson, a Week 7 showdown with his former team, the Lions, awaits on Sunday, Oct. 20. In the meantime, Johnny Mundt (five targets this season) and Josh Oliver (two) will continue to man tight end for the Vikings.
Sep 5, 2024
May be targeting post-bye return
The Vikings are thought to be loosely targeting a return from the reserve/PUP list for Hockenson (knee) after the team's Week 6 bye, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
ANALYSIS
Minnesota placed Hockenson on the reserve/PUP list upon trimming down to a 53-man roster, which rules the standout tight end out for at least the first four games of the season, but it sounds like Hockenson's return to the field could take until Week 7, after the team's bye. That makes sense considering not only Hockenson's recovery timetable, as he works his way back from right ACL and MCL tears suffered late last December, but also the Vikings' schedule. The team has an overseas Week 5 matchup against the Jets prior to the bye. Until Hockenson is cleared to retake the field, Johnny Mundt and Josh Oliver are slated to hold down the fort at the tight end position.
Aug 27, 2024
Starting season on PUP list
Hockenson (knee) will be on the PUP list to start the regular season, ruling him out for at least the first four games, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has been on the active/PUP list since the start of training camp and will now shift to reserve/PUP on Tuesday as teams cut their rosters down to 53 players. He won't count against that limit for at least the first four weeks of the season, which means his earliest date for a 2024 debut would be Week 5 against the Jets (Oct. 6). Hockenson had the best statistical season of his career in 2023, only to see it marred by ACL and MCL tears on a hard hit to the knee during a Dec. 24 game against Detroit. Johnny Mundt, Josh Oliver and Robert Tonyan (back) will take most of Minnesota's TE snaps until Hockenson is ready.
Aug 9, 2024
Likely out for start of season
Hockenson (knee) isn't likely to be ready for Week 1 and could miss anywhere from three to seven regular-season games, ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler reports.
ANALYSIS
While previous reports perhaps came off as more optimistic, Hockenson has always faced an uphill battle to be ready for the start of the season after suffering ACL and MCL tears on Dec. 24. Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said last week that Hockenson is, "very well ahead of maybe where some of the medical folks thought he would be," but also cautioned that, "a timeline exists and we're going to try to stay true to that." Hockenson remains on the active/PUP list after two weeks of training camp, and it won't come as any surprise if he heads into the regular season on the reserve/PUP list, which would rule him out for the first four games. In the meantime, TE snaps and targets seem to be up for grabs between Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt and Robert Tonyan (back).
Aug 2, 2024
Ahead of schedule in recovery
Speaking Friday, coach Kevin O'Connell said Hockenson (knee, PUP) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn ACL, Joe Nelson of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
"Every time I see him working on the side field it becomes awful tempting to ... demand answers on when we'll be able to stat implementing him maybe off the PUP list and get him a little bit of work," O'Connell said. "Whether it's just simply individual, some routes on air, start getting him some timing with our quarterbacks. ... Where he's at, albeit very well ahead of maybe where some of the medical folks thought he would be, there is an injury there that a timeline exists and we're going to try to stay true to that while also giving him opportunities to push to maybe shrink that timeline a little bit." Hockenson is just over seven months removed from tearing his ACL on Christmas Eve last year. While O'Connell is excited about his tight end's progress, smart money would still be on Hockenson starting the season on reserve/PUP, knocking him out for at least the first four games of 2024. Making it back in time for Week 1 would be unprecedented territory for an ACL recovery. Josh Oliver is expected to handle T
Jul 22, 2024
Officially shifts to PUP list
The Vikings placed Hockenson (knee) on the active/PUP list Monday.
ANALYSIS
The transaction confirms an announcement by coach Kevin O'Connell earlier Monday. Hockenson is eligible to come off the PUP list at any point during training camp or the preseason, once ready to practice, but given the timing of his late-January procedure to repair a torn ACL, the 27-year-old tight end seems like a real candidate to miss some time early in the regular season. Josh Oliver, Robert Tonyan and Johnny Mundt will be candidates to benefit from increased first-team reps as long as Hockenson remains sidelined.
Jul 22, 2024
Will start camp on PUP list
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday that Hockenson (knee) will start training camp on the active/PUP list, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
O'Connell said Hockenson is "well ahead of schedule" in his recovery from ACL undergone late January, per Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, but he also said "the significant injury that it was, we want to make sure everything is done the right way." It sounds like the Vikings will continue taking a cautious approach while working Hockenson back into action, and given that the standout tight end still remains without a timetable to return, his availability for Week 1 remains doubtful. Once back on the field, it could take Hockenson some time to ramp up to pre-injury form in terms of production, so it won't be surprising if he gets off to a slow start once healthy, then improves down the stretch of the 2024 season.
May 17, 2024
No timetable for return
Hockenson (knee) said "they haven't really put a timeline on it" when asked Wednesday about a potential date for his in-season return to action, Grant Gordon of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was specifically asked on the NFL Schedule Release '24 show whether he expects to be playing Week 5 versus the Jets in London. The standout tight end said of his recovery from a right ACL and MCL tear he's "kinda taking it day by day, week by week," and that "the progression has been incredible" even though a specific return timetable remains uncertain. Hockenson underwent surgery late January and doesn't seem likely to be ready for Week 1, but Week 5 could be within the realm of possibility. The Vikings have a Week 6 bye, however, so it's possible that a more realistic target for Hockenson's debut could be Week 7 and beyond.
May 2, 2024
Ahead of schedule in rehab
Hockenson (knee) is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn right ACL and MCL, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson suffered the knee injury the day after Christmas. According to Lewis, even though Hockenson is making quick progress, the Vikings don't plan to rush him back, and his status for Week 1 remains in question. There's chance he opens the season on reserve/PUP. If so, veterans Josh Oliver and Johnny Mundt are next up on the depth chart.

Undergoes surgery
Hockenson (knee) underwent successful ACL surgery Monday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson's season ended when he tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee on Dec. 26. Given how late in the season his injury occurred, the star tight end is presumably in danger of not being ready for the start of the 2024 season. He will now move forward with the rehab process as the offseason gets underway.
Dec 27, 2023
Officially on injured reserve
The Vikings placed Hockenson (knee) on injured reserve Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
This transaction was expected after head coach Kevin O'Connell revealed Tuesday that Hockenson suffered ACL and MCL injuries in his right knee during this past Sunday's loss to the Lions, per Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com. Hockenson is slated for surgery at some point, and considering such severe injuries befell the tight end so late in the current campaign, he may be in danger of missing Week 1 of the 2024 season. The Vikings will hand over the position to Josh Oliver and Johnny Mundt for the last two contests of the regular season and any potential playoff games that follow.

Suffers torn ACL, MCL in Week 16
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said Tuesday that Hockenson will miss the rest of the season after sustaining a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee in Sunday's 30-24 loss to the Lions, Dane Mizutani of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson is expected to be placed on injured reserve in the coming days, while the Vikings likely turn to Josh Oliver to take over as their starting tight end for the remainder of the season. Given the late-December timing of his ACL tear along with the fact that he'll also need surgery to address an MCL tear, Hockenson could face an uphill battle to gain clearance for the start of training camp in late July. Hockenson finishes his first full season in Minnesota with career highs in catches (95), receiving yards (960) and targets (127) in addition to scoring five touchdowns over 15 games.
Dec 25, 2023
Outlook for knee injury 'not good'
Hockenson is slated to undergo an MRI on Monday after sustaining a right knee injury in Sunday's 30-24 loss to the Lions, but the Vikings appear to be bracing for the tight end to miss some time, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While a precise diagnosis of Hockenson's injury won't be known until the results of his MRI are read, his initial outlook is "not good" after he was unable to return to Sunday's contest upon taking a helmet to his knee during the Vikings' opening drive of the third quarter. Even if no structural damage to his knee is detected, Hockenson could still be dealing with a ligament issue that might threaten his availability for the final two games of the regular season, as well as any potential postseason run. Through 15 appearances on the campaign, Hockenson has turned in a 95-960-5 receiving line on 127 targets, with the reception and yardage totals both representing career-best marks.
Dec 24, 2023
Exits early due to knee injury
Hockenson won't return to Sunday's game against the Lions due to a right knee injury, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson suffered the injury on the Vikings' opening drive of the third quarter, when he took a hard shot to the knee following a reception, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. He'll finish the contest with four catches for 58 yards on four targets. The Vikings will likely provide an update on Hockenson's condition in the coming days, but for the time being, his status for the team's Week 17 game versus the Packers is uncertain.
Dec 16, 2023
Modest but productive day Saturday
Hockenson caught six passes for 63 yards on seven targets in the 27-24 overtime loss to the Bengals on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was highly efficient and turned in a solid game for his fantasy investors, but it was easy to overlook his contributions in a game where he was overshadowed by Jordan Addison (six catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns on six targets) and Justin Jefferson (seven catches for 84 yards on 10 targets). Addison seemingly remains behind Hockenson in the overall target rotation, though, so Hockenson is a good bet to rank higher in the team receiving category when the Vikings play against Detroit in Week 17.
Dec 10, 2023
Leading receiver in Week 14 win
Hockenson caught five of eight targets for 53 yards in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
The catches and yards were team highs on a day when both offenses simply couldn't get anything going. Four of Hockenson's five catches came in the fourth quarter after Nick Mullens had replaced Joshua Dobbs under center, however, which bodes well for the tight end in Week 15 against the Bengals if Mullens winds up taking over at QB on a full-time basis.
Nov 27, 2023
Finds end zone in Week 12 loss
Hockenson secured five of six targets for 50 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' 12-10 loss to the Bears on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson led the Vikings in receiving yards and recorded the game's only touchdown on a 17-yard grab with just under six minutes remaining in the game. The talented tight end overcame a rib injury to suit up Monday night, and he'll head into a Week 13 bye that will afford him some extra rest having scored three times in the last five games. Hockenson next faces the Raiders in an interconference road battle in Week 14.
Nov 25, 2023
Clear to play Week 12
Hockenson (ribs) does not have an injury status for Monday's game against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson practiced in full Saturday after beginning the week with a pair of limited sessions. He's been dealing with an injury to his ribs since early November, but the issue hasn't caused him to miss any games. Hockenson leads NFL tight ends with 75 catches and 736 receiving yards on the campaign, and he's also notched four touchdowns.
Nov 24, 2023
Limited with rib injury
Hockenson (ribs) was a limited participant in practice Friday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson played through the rib injury the past two weeks and piled up 15 catches for 189 yards and a touchdown in his familiar three-down role. He'll likely be fine for Monday's game against the Bears, and might be looking at another week without WR Justin Jefferson (hamstring - LP) around to compete for targets.
Nov 23, 2023
Still dealing with rib injury
Hockenson (ribs) was listed as limited on Thursday's injury report, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has been tending to a rib injury since the Vikings' Week 9 win in Atlanta, but he's still been able to play the last two games on his way to 15 catches (on 22 targets) for 189 yards and one touchdown. During that same span, there's been the looming decision whether or not to activate Justin Jefferson (hamstring) from injured reserve, but the star wideout continues to be listed as limited. Even if Hockenson is rejoined by Jefferson on Monday against the Bears, the tight end should remain one of quarterback Joshua Dobbs' top options in the passing game.
Nov 20, 2023
Team-high receiving yards in loss
Hockenson brought in four of seven targets for 55 yards in the Vikings' 21-20 loss to the Broncos on Sunday night.
ANALYSIS
The productive tight end paced the Vikings in receiving yards and targets while tying with fellow tight end Josh Oliver for the team lead in receptions. However, it was still an underwhelming night by Hockenson's lofty standards, as his catch total was his lowest since Week 4 while his receiving yards qualified as his fewest since Week 6. Hockenson has shown good early rapport with Joshua Dobbs despite Sunday's downturn, but he could see his overall target share take a hit with the potential return of Justin Jefferson (hamstring) for a Week 12 home matchup against the Bears on Monday night, Nov. 27.
Nov 17, 2023
Ready for Week 11
Hockenson (ribs) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's contest in Denver.
ANALYSIS
For a second straight week, Hockenson had a cap on his practice reps due to the injured ribs that he sustained back in a Week 9 win in Atlanta. The issue didn't stop him from playing this past Sunday against the Saints, when he put up 11 catches (on 15 targets) for 134 yards and one touchdown on a season-low 68 percent snap share. Now that he's in the clear to continue suiting up for game days, Hockenson may be welcoming back Justin Jefferson (hamstring) this weekend. If that doesn't come to pass, though, Hockenson and rookie wide receiver Jordan Addison will remain the top pass-catching options for quarterback Joshua Dobbs.
Nov 16, 2023
Another limited showing
Hockenson (ribs) practiced on a limited basis Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson is operating with a cap on his practice reps this week due to the injured ribs that he sustained back in Week 9. While he played a season-low 68 percent of the offensive snaps this past Sunday against the Saints, he didn't seem worse for wear on his way to 11 catches (on 15 targets) for 134 yards and one touchdown. There's a chance that the tight end will be welcoming back Justin Jefferson (hamstring, IR) for the first time since Week 5 on Sunday in Denver, but Hockenson himself has just one more opportunity to log a full practice before the Vikings potentially hand him a designation for Week 11 action.
Nov 15, 2023
Limited on estimated report
Hockenson (ribs) was listed as limited on Wednesday's practice estimate.
ANALYSIS
The Vikings placed a cap on Hockenson's practice reps last week due to the rib injury that he suffered during a Week 9 win in Atlanta. It didn't stop him from suiting up this past Sunday against the Saints on his way to 11 catches (on 15 targets) for 134 yards and one touchdown. Now that he's back on the practice report, though, Hockenson's status will need to be monitored as the weekend approaches.
Nov 12, 2023
Racks up 134 yards
Hockenson recorded 11 receptions on 15 targets for 134 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-19 win over the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was Joshua Dobbs' favorite target, and he commanded double-digit opportunities for the third time in four games. Typically utilized near the line of scrimmage, this game stood out for Hockenson due to his work down the field, as he tallied three receptions of more than 20 yards -- highlighted by a 28-yard touchdown just before halftime. While it was an excellent performance, he is likely to have more target competition soon with Justin Jefferson (hamstring) nearing a return.
Nov 12, 2023
Playing Sunday, but may be limited
Hockenson (ribs) is active for Sunday's game against the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson gutted out a rib injury last Sunday in Atlanta, but he still played 85 percent of snaps and gathered in seven of 12 targets for 69 yards and no touchdowns. He proceeded to be a limited practice participant during the entirety of Week 10 prep, and while he's suiting up this Sunday, there's an expectation that he won't receive his typical workload, per Ed Werder of ESPN. With Hockenson handling fewer snaps than normal and WRs Justin Jefferson (hamstring) and K.J. Osborn (concussion) unavailable, rookie wideout Jordan Addison should be on the receiving end of plenty of passes from quarterback Joshua Dobbs, while Josh Oliver and Johnny Mundt are the available tight ends not named Hockenson.
Nov 12, 2023
May be limited Sunday
Hockenson (ribs) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Saints, and while he's expected to be active for the contest, the tight end isn't expected to handle his typical snap share, Ed Werder of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was a limited practice participant from Wednesday through Friday after he sustained a rib injury in the Vikings' Week 9 win over the Falcons. Though Hockenson still proceeded to play 85 percent of the snaps on offense against Atlanta and finished with a 7-69-0 receiving line on 12 targets, Werder notes that the 26-year-old is still affected by the rib injury, and the Vikings are expected to act more cautiously with his usage. Specifically, Werder relays that Hockenson will be on the field for key situations, though he won't play as many snaps as normal. While a more limited snap count than normal would lower Hockenson's fantasy ceiling to some degree, he still profiles as a strong option in Week 10 lineups, especially given the limited target competition he'll have whenever he's on the field. The Vikings opted not to activate star receiver Justin Jefferson (hamstring) from injured reserve this week, and another starting wideout in K.J. Osborn (concussion) is listed as questionable but considered unl
Nov 12, 2023
Expected to take on Saints
Hockenson (ribs), who is officially listed as questionable, is expected to suit up Sunday versus New Orleans, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has been limited in practice due to a rib injury suffering during Week 9's 31-28 win over Atlanta, but it looks like he will be available versus the Saints. That's significant news for Minnesota's offense, with Justin Jefferson (hamstring) not yet cleared to come off IR, and K.J. Osborn (concussion) looking like a game-time decision. We'll receive official word on Hockenson's status 90 minutes prior to Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
Nov 10, 2023
Questionable for Week 10
Hockenson (ribs) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Saints, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson played through the injury after suffering it in Sunday's 31-28 win over Atlanta, finishing seven catches for 69 yards while playing more than three-fourth of available snaps. He seems to have come out of the game with significant soreness but has a shot to avoid any absences after managing limited practice participation throughout the week. Fantasy managers will be glad to hear the Vikings and Saints have an early kickoff (1 ET) given that WRs Justin Jefferson (hamstring) and K.J. Osborn (concussion) also are listed as questionable.
Nov 9, 2023
Stays limited Thursday
Hockenson (ribs) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson continues to operate with a cap on his practice reps as the Vikings navigate their way through Week 10 prep. A rib issue is to blame, but Hockenson told Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com on Thursday, "That's the plan," when asked about his chances to play Sunday against the Saints. That comment echoed one from coach Kevin O'Connell on Monday, but Friday's injury report will reveal whether or not Hockenson enters the weekend with a designation.
Nov 8, 2023
Limited at practice Wednesday
Hockenson (ribs) was limited in practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
In the wake of the Vikings' 31-28 win in Atlanta this past Sunday, coach Kevin O'Connell told Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune that Hockenson was dealing with an oblique or rib issue. O'Connell also expressed hope Monday that the tight end would be able to play through the injury, according to Goessling. After only 'rib' was listed next to his name Wednesday, Hockenson will have two more chances to get back to full before the team potentially makes a ruling on his availability for Sunday's game against the Saints.
Nov 6, 2023
Hopeful to play against New Orleans
Head coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday that he hopes Hockenson (ribs) will be able to play Sunday against the Saints, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was the Vikings' leading receiver during Sunday's Week 9 win over the Falcons, but O'Connell revealed after the game that the tight end is limited by a rib issue. Hockenson is expected to be limited to begin the week, but the team hopes that he won't be forced to miss any game action. A better idea of his status should come into focus based on his participation in practice this week.
Nov 5, 2023
Leading receiver in comeback win
Hockenson recorded seven receptions on 12 targets for 69 yards in Sunday's 31-28 win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson had a quiet first half, hauling in only one of three targets for seven yards. However, he came alive as Josh Dobbs got settled into the game, with two of his catches going for key first downs and another setting up the game-winning score in the second half. Hockenson has now topped 50 receiving yards in five consecutive games, and it appears that he'll remain productive even without Kirk Cousins (Achilles). Unfortunately, Hockenson suffered an oblique or rib issue, so monitoring his status for a Week 10 matchup against New Orleans will be important.
Oct 29, 2023
Strong showing in Week 8 win
Hockenson caught six of nine targets for 88 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 24-10 win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
The tight end's big day was punctuated by a two-yard TD from Kirk Cousins in the third quarter. Unfortunately for Hockenson and the rest of Minnesota's receiving options, Cousins suffered what's feared to be a season-ending Achilles tear late in Sunday's contest. With Nick Mullins (back) on IR for at least one more game, that will likely leave fifth-round rookie Jalen Hall under center in Week 9 against the Falcons.
Oct 27, 2023
Good to go
Hockenson (foot) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's matchup with the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson's availability comes as no surprise after the foot injury cost him just a snap or three during a 22-17 win over the 49ers on Monday. He finished the game with season highs for catches (11), yards (86) and targets (12), pushing his per-game averages up to 6.7 receptions for 55.7 yards -- similar to his marks from last year (6.0 for 51.9) in the 10 games after he was traded from Detroit to Minnesota. The volume alone makes Hockenson a strong TE1 for fantasy, even with his aDOT sitting at a career-low 6.3 and his red-zone target share at a surprisingly low 10.5 percent. The latter number figures to rise as the season progresses, particularly given that target-hogging WR Justin Jefferson (hamstring) will miss at least two more games on injured reserve.
Oct 26, 2023
Logs limited practice Thursday
Hockenson (foot) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson is managing a foot issue that he sustained in the fourth quarter of Monday's 22-17 win against the 49ers. After sitting out Wednesday's session entirely, he appeared to be moving around OK during the media-access portion of Thursday's practice, according to Alec Lewis of The Athletic. Hockenson has one more chance this week to prove his health before the Vikings potentially hand him a designation for Sunday's game at Green Bay.
Oct 25, 2023
Logs DNP on Wednesday
Hockenson was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday's practice estimate due to a foot injury.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson hit the sideline for a spell during Monday's 22-17 win against the 49ers due to a foot injury, but after paying a visit to the medical tent, he was able to return to action. Overall, his snap share was a normal 85 percent, and he also set season highs in catches (11), yards (86) and targets (12). The Vikings may just be taking it easy on Hockenson just two days removed from that game, but his status now will need to be monitored closely ahead of Sunday's visit to Green Bay.
Oct 23, 2023
Racks up catches in upset victory
Hockenson brought in 11 of 12 targets for 86 yards in the Vikings' 22-17 win over the 49ers on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Despite the fact he exited the game in the second half for a time due to a foot injury, Hockenson still finished with a game- and season-high number of receptions, receiving yards and targets. The fifth-year tight end has unsurprisingly seen his involvement rise during the two-game (and counting) absence of Justin Jefferson (hamstring, IR), and Hockenson could be in for another very busy day against the Packers in a Week 8 NFC North road battle.
Oct 23, 2023
Returns to game
Hockenson (foot) has returned to Monday's game against the 49ers, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson had his foot rolled up on and subsequently limped to the medical tent. However, his return to the game indicates the issue is not serious. Look for him to continue his usual role at tight end assuming he avoids any setbacks.
Oct 23, 2023
Visits medical tent
Hockenson limped off the field towards the medical tent in Monday's matchup with the 49ers after suffering an apparent foot injury, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson appeared to have his right foot rolled up on while run blocking. There is no word yet regarding his status for the remainder of the game. The 26-year-old tallied eight receoptions for 80 yards before leaving the game.
Oct 15, 2023
Leads pass catchers in close win
Hockenson brought in six of eight targets for 50 yards in the Vikings' 19-13 win over the Bears on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson led the Vikings' pass-catching corps in receptions, receiving yards and targets in Minnesota's first game without Justin Jefferson (IR-hamstring), but the big tight end didn't really get going until the latter portion of the game. Hockenson was unsurprisingly Kirk Cousins' favorite target sans Jefferson, and the same could certainly hold true in a Week 7 Monday night home matchup against 49ers on Oct. 23 where the veteran quarterback figures to frequently have to get rid of the ball quickly due to the pressure San Francisco is capable of applying.
Oct 8, 2023
Five catches in Week 5 loss
Hockenson caught five of eight targets for 51 yards in Sunday's 27-20 loss to Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
The tight end saw at least eight targets for the fourth time in five games, although he was able to turn the volume into only modest production this time out. With Justin Jefferson (hamstring) missing the end of Sunday's contest and potentially unavailable in Week 6, however, Hockenson could wind up being Kirk Cousins' most reliable option against a Chicago defense that's allowed the third-most catches in the league to tight ends through five weeks.
Oct 1, 2023
Quiet in win
Hockenson caught two of three targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 21-13 win over the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson's lowest output of the campaign came while quarterback Kirk Cousins passed for merely 139 yards. In fact, Justin Jefferson was the only Viking to make more than two receptions, with rookie first-rounder Jordan Addison not managing any. Clearly, there wasn't much production to go around Minnesota's passing game Sunday, explaining Hockenson's small impact.
Sep 24, 2023
Racks up 11 targets
Hockenson recorded eight receptions on 11 targets for 78 yards in Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has been heavily reliant upon volume for production early this season and that trend continued Sunday. He finished second on the team in targets but only tallied two catches that went for more than 10 yards. Hockenson will remain a must-start option as long as he remains such a key to the offense as he has at least eight looks in all three games this season. On the other hand, his production relative to his opportunity has been unimpressive, as he's averaging only 6.4 yards per target on the campaign while racking up 179 total yards.
Sep 15, 2023
Scores first two TDs of season
Hockenson brought in seven of eight targets for 66 yards and two touchdowns in the Vikings' 34-28 loss to the Eagles on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
The talented tight end had already amassed eight catches during the Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers, albeit for only 35 yards. Hockenson had one less grab but much more fantasy success four days later, scoring on a pair of five-yard grabs in the second and fourth quarters, respectively. He also posted a 24-yard reception that nearly outpaced his entire season-opening output, and with 15 receptions on 17 targets thus far, he's on pace early for career-best efficiency. Hockenson will aim to keep up the momentum during a Week 3 home matchup against the Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 24.
Sep 10, 2023
Busy but underwhelming in loss
Hockenson brought in eight of nine targets for 35 yards in the Vikings' 20-17 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The talented tight end got his season off to a strong start reception-wise, with his catch and target totals second only to those of Justin Jefferson's on the afternoon. However, the Buccaneers' talented array of linebackers and safeties limited Hockenson to just 4.4 yards per reception with a 14-yard grab serving as his longest for the day. Hockenson's degree of involvement right out of the gate is naturally very encouraging and likely indicative of what should be expected most weeks, and he and Kirk Cousins will look to rekindle their prolific connection with a bit more downfield work in a Week 2 road date versus the Eagles on Thursday night.
Sep 6, 2023
Clear of injury report
Hockenson (lower back) wasn't listed on the Vikings' first Week 1 injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Since the start of training camp, Hockenson didn't get much on-field work or any preseason action due to the combination of an ear infection and stiffness in his lower back. The issues didn't stop the Vikings from paying up for the tight end, following up last season's acquisition from the Lions with a four-year, $66 million extension on Aug. 31. Now that he's back to full health, Hockenson can turn his focus to being one of the top targets for quarterback Kirk Cousins alongside WRs Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison and RB Alexander Mattison.
Aug 31, 2023
On track for Week 1, gets new deal
Hockenson (lower back) was nearly a full practice participant Wednesday and is on track to play Week 1 against Tampa Bay, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson missed a lot of August due to an ear infection and then a lower back injury, with his contract situation perhaps also playing a role. Everything is pointing up a week and a half before the start of the season, as he signed a contract extension Thursday after displaying his improved health Wednesday. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the extension is for four years and $68.5 million, with Hockenson's $42.5 million guarantee and $17.125 million average annual value both setting records among tight ends.
Aug 31, 2023
Signs extension
Hockenson (lower back) and the Vikings agreed Thursday to a contract extension, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The deal reportedly puts Hockenson among the highest-paid tight ends in the league, as one would expect of an eighth overall pick coming off career highs for catches (86) and yards (914). He missed a lot of time this summer with an ear infection and then a lower back injury, but the Vikings seemingly expect Hockenson to be ready for Week 1 against Tampa Bay.
Aug 23, 2023
Managing lower back issue
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Wednesday that Hockenson missed practice due to lower back stiffness, Dane Mizutani of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has recovered from the ear infection that hampered him mid-August, but lower back stiffness could now sideline him through Saturday's preseason finale against the Cardinals. The starting tight end still has well over two weeks to recover before Minnesota's regular-season opener against Tampa Bay, but he may have to shake off some rust if he indeed fails to log a preseason appearance.
Aug 21, 2023
Still limited by ear infection
Hockenson (illness) was limited during Monday's practice, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson warmed up and ran through installs before heading inside for treatment. The tight end has been limited due to the ear infection since Aug. 3, and it remains unclear when he'll be back to 100 percent. The Vikings have one remaining preseason game, Saturday against Arizona, and three weeks until they open the regular season against Tampa Bay on Sept. 10. Hockenson said last week that he's "starting to get cleared up," so there doesn't appear to be too much concern about his availability, but it's certainly a storyline worth following with Week 1 approaching fast.
Aug 14, 2023
Getting over ear infection
Hockenson (illness) said Monday he's dealing with an ear infection and is unsure whether he will participate in joint practices with the Titans this week, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson participated in Monday's practice, per Seifert, though it was a walkthrough with no contact or pads. Clarity on the starting tight end's illness is helpful, as he can now be projected to resume practicing in full shortly after the infection fades. Hockenson himself said said "I'm starting to get cleared up," per Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. It remains to be seen whether he can return to full health in time for Saturday's preseason game against Tennessee.
Aug 7, 2023
Dealing with illness
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday that Hockenson is battling an illness, Dane Mizutani of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson's illness explains his lighter practice activity over the weekend. There's not yet real cause for concern, but the illness could end up ruling the tight end out for Thursday's preseason game against the Seahawks, if it was ever in consideration that he handle a significant amount of snaps. Hockenson still has over a month to get healthy and return to practice ahead of the Vikings' regular-season opener against Tampa Bay on Sept. 10.
Jan 15, 2023
Leading receiver in losing effort
Hockenson caught 10 of 11 targets for 129 yards in Sunday's 31-24 wild-card round loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The Giants were able to limit Justin Jefferson's (7-47-0) big-play ability by shading safety help his direction, which opened up huge holes in the middle of the field for Hockenson to feast on. It was a bittersweet finish the 2022 season for the receiving tight end, who produced new highs in receptions (86) and receiving yards (914) across 17 games between the Lions and Vikings. Hockenson thrived following the midseason trade to Minnesota -- and he remains under contract next year -- putting him in the upper echelon of tight ends heading into 2023.
Jan 9, 2023
One catch before rested
Hockenson caught his only target for 16 yards during Sunday's 29-13 victory versus Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson played just 33 snaps on offense as he and fellow starters were rested in the second half. He'll have a much larger role in this week's home playoff matchup against the Giants.
Jan 6, 2023
May not play full game
Head coach Kevin O'Connell intimated Friday that Hockenson and other key starters on offense and defense may not play the entirety of the Vikings' Week 18 game in Chicago, Joe Nelson of SI.com reports. "We've got a pretty clear cut plan with how we want to go about the whole game, but we're going to go in with the expectation of our guys going and try to get off to a good start and play good football," O'Connell said.
ANALYSIS
Minnesota is assured no worse than the No. 3 seed in the NFC playoffs regardless of how this weekend's games transpire, but since the Vikings will need a win over the Bears plus a Cardinals win over the heavily-favored 49ers to climb to the No. 2 seed, O'Connell may not have much incentive to expose key players to an injury heading into the wild-card round. While Hockenson and all of the Vikings' other starting skill-position players look poised to play at least one series, the uncertainty of whether they'll play much beyond that makes it tough to reliably project any in Week 18 season-long or DFS lineups.
Jan 2, 2023
Seven grabs in Sunday's loss
Hockenson caught seven of 12 targets for 59 yards in Sunday's 41-17 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
The tight end tied K.J. Osborn for the team lead in receptions on a day when the Vikings offense mostly struggled and didn't score its first touchdown until well into the fourth quarter. Hockenson has caught at least three passes in every game since being traded to Minnesota and is just 102 receiving yards short of his first career 1,000-yard campaign, but with the team having nothing to play for in Week 18 except playoff seeding, he may not see a full workload against the Bears.
Dec 24, 2022
Finds end zone twice in career day
Hockenson caught 13 of 16 targets for 109 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 27-24 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The 13 grabs were a career high for the tight end, while his 100-yard performance was his first as a Viking and the third of his career. Hockenson had just a 13-143-0 line on 23 targets over his prior three games combined and won't get to face the Giants' defense every week, but he could still be productive in Week 17 against the Packers.
Dec 17, 2022
Nine targets in OT win
Hockenson caught three of nine targets for 33 yards and also secured a two-point conversion in Saturday's 39-36 overtime win over the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Outside of catching a game-tying two-point conversion with 2:15 to play, Hockenson didn't contribute much to Minnesota's historic comeback from a 33-point halftime deficit. The tight end has been targeted at least six times in all six of his games as a member of the Vikings, and he should continue to play a prominent role in Minnesota's high-powered offense in Week 16 against the Giants.
Dec 11, 2022
Strong numbers versus old squad
Hockenson secured six of eight targets for 77 yards in the Vikings' 34-23 loss to the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Facing his old squad in the highly familiar environment of Ford Field, Hockenson finished second in receiving yards and tied for second in targets as well on the afternoon for the Vikings. The talented tight end's yardage tally was also his highest since his Week 9 Minnesota debut, and he's now recorded at least five catches in five of his first six games with Minnesota. Hockenson next takes aim at the Colts defense in a Week 15 home matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Dec 4, 2022
Held to 33 yards
Hockenson recorded four receptions on six targets for 33 yards in Sunday's 27-22 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson tied Adam Thielen for second on the team in targets, and he now has at least six targets in every game since joining the Vikings. He accounted for a significant portion of his production with a 13-yard reception early in the fourth quarter on a drive that resulted in the game-winning touchdown. Despite the consistent opportunity, Hockenson has now racked up fewer than 50 receiving yards in four consecutive games.
Nov 25, 2022
Finds end zone in win
Hockenson brought in five of six targets for 43 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' 33-26 win over the Patriots on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was Kirk Cousins' top non-wideout target for the night, and he scored his first touchdown as a member of the Vikings with a one-yard grab late in the first half. Hockenson has quickly put together a robust 26-192-1 line over his first four games in Minnesota, sending him into a Week 13 home matchup versus the Jets with plenty of momentum.
Nov 20, 2022
Struggles with drops Sunday
Hockenson caught five of nine targets for 34 yards in Sunday's 40-3 blowout loss to the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson actually led the Vikings in receiving despite his meager output in an embarrassing loss. Minnesota's prized deadline acquisition struggled with drops Sunday, failing to pull in two throws that hit him in the hands on consecutive plays near the end zone. The 25-year-old is struggling to find separation in his new scheme, averaging just 7.1 YPC in three games since being traded after posting a mark of 15.2 with Detroit. Hockenson remains a premier fantasy asset due to his high target rate (9.3 targets/game with MIN). The athletic tight end is hoping to be thankful for his first touchdown as a Viking when Minnesota takes on the New England on Thanksgiving.
Nov 13, 2022
Seeing heavy volume with Vikings
Hockenson caught seven of 10 targets for 45 yards in Sunday's 33-30 overtime win over the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has been targeted 19 times in two games with the Vikings, catching 16 of those for 115 yards. His steady diet of targets from Kirk Cousins has elevated Hockenson back into the upper echelon of the thin tight end position, especially in PPR formats. The former Detroit tight end will face the Cowboys in Week 11. Dallas held Hockenson to four catches for 48 yards as a member of the Lions in Week 7.
Nov 6, 2022
Team-high catch total in debut
Hockenson brought in all nine targets for 70 yards in the Vikings' 20-17 win over the Commanders on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The newly acquired tight end made quite the splash in his first game in Minnesota, posting a team-high reception total while checking in second in yardage and targets to Justin Jefferson. Hockenson's robust usage and the fact he outpaced Adam Thielen by six receptions overall could signal the dawning of a new day in the Vikings offense, with head coach Kevin O'Connell apparently willing to deploy Hockenson as much more of a pass-catching asset than he did Irv Smith (ankle). Hockenson's first opportunity to build on the standout effort comes in a tough Week 10 road showdown against the Bills.
Nov 5, 2022
Will have role against Commanders
Hockenson will be a "key part" of the Vikings' offense Sunday against the Commanders, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was traded to Minnesota on Tuesday, but he worked extra hours to get caught up on the team's game plan while preparing on a short week. Hockenson will almost certainly make his Minnesota debut Sunday, but it remains unclear exactly how much he will play. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Johnny Mundt take on a larger role as a receiver in Week 9 in the absence of Irv Smith (ankle).
Nov 1, 2022
Dealt to Minnesota in surprise move
The Vikings acquired Hockenson, a 2023 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick from the Lions on Tuesday in exchange for a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
With top tight end Irv Smith expected to miss time with a high-ankle sprain, the 6-1 Vikings swung a deal with one of their division rivals to secure a high-quality replacement in Hockenson, who should sit atop the depth chart even after Smith returns. Hockenson had been the No. 2 option in the passing game for Detroit this season behind wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown and was off to a strong start through seven games, producing a 26-395-3 receiving line on 43 targets. He joins a similar situation in Minnesota with another alpha wideout on hand in Justin Jefferson, but it's conceivable that Hockenson could quickly challenge Adam Thielen (knee) for a role as the No. 2 target for quarterback Kirk Cousins. Hockenson is due $9.39 million in 2023 after Detroit exercised his fifth-year team option earlier this year, and the Vikings could look to negotiate a longer-term extension with the tight end next spring depending on how he performs over the back half of the season.
Oct 30, 2022
Team-high receiving yardage total
Hockenson secured three of four targets for 80 yards in the Lions' 31-27 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson's yardage total paced the Lions on the afternoon and was largely the result of a game-long 58-yard grab in the first quarter on a drive that culminated in a D'Andre Swift touchdown reception. Hockenson's tally through the air was also his second highest of the season, and he's recorded multiple catches in six of his first seven games. He'll aim to play an integral role once again against the Packers in a Week 9 NFC North home clash.
Oct 28, 2022
Cleared for Sunday
Hockenson (knee) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against Miami, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Neither do RB D'Andre Swift (shoulder) and WR Josh Reynolds (knee), while Amon-Ra St. Brown (concussion) is listed as questionable but tentatively expected to play. Hockenson has yet to miss a game this season despite frequently showing up on the injury report, and he's seen at least four targets in each game, albeit with 57 percent of his yardage and two of his three TDs coming in a single contest Week 4 against Seattle.
Oct 27, 2022
Bumps up to limited Thursday
Hockenson (knee) was limited in practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After kicking off Week 8 prep with no on-field activity, Hockenson bumped up to a capped session Thursday and now has one more practice to get back to full before the Lions' potentially give him a designation for Sunday's game versus the Dolphins. The offense as a whole is getting healthier with No. 1 RB D'Andre Swift (ankle/shoulder) avoiding any practice limitations this week, though top WR Amon-Ra St. Brown remains on the concussion protocol. If both are able to play this weekend, Hockenson, if active, would have more room to operate underneath.
Oct 26, 2022
Dealing with knee concern
Hockenson didn't practice Wednesday due to a knee issue.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson previously dealt with hip and foot injuries this season, but he's been able to suit up in all six of the Lions' games, earning between 76 and 91 percent of the offensive snaps on each occasion. With a new health concern in tow, though, his status should be watched closely as the week continues to ensure he'll be available this weekend. If he's active Sunday against the Dolphins, Hockenson will be joined by top running back D'Andre Swift (ankle/shoulder) for the first time since Week 3 and likely wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (concussion), who were full and limited, respectively, at Wednesday's session.
Oct 23, 2022
Four catches against Cowboys
Hockenson caught four of five targets for 48 yards during Sunday's 24-6 loss to the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson made a few nice catches, but Detroit's five total turnovers killed their most promising possessions and, ultimately, Hockenson's chances of finding the end zone. It probably didn't help him that the continued absences of D'Andre Swift (shoulder) and DJ Chark (ankle) were compounded by the loss of Amon-Ra St. Brown (concussion) in the first half. The resulting defensive focus on Hockenson seemingly led to the likes of Kalif Raymond, Brock Wright, Craig Reynolds, and Tom Kennedy seeing most of Jared Goff's pass attempts. However, with Swift and St. Brown potentially returning in Week 8 against Miami, it is possible the Detroit offense could get back on track sooner than later.
Oct 9, 2022
Bottled up by Patriots
Hockenson caught one of four targets for six yards during Sunday's 29-0 loss to New England.
ANALYSIS
With DJ Chark (ankle) and D'Andre Swift (shoulder) still sidelined and Amon-Ra St. Brown playing through an ankle sprain, the Patriots seemingly made sure to eliminate Hockenson from the Lions' game plan after the tight end put up prolific numbers against the Seahawks in Week 4. Hockenson was also a guilty party on at least one allowed sack from Patriots pass rusher Matthew Judon. With a Week 6 bye on deck, a Lions offense that entered the Week 5 leading the league in yards per game (436.8) will look to get back on track in Week 7 against the Cowboys.
Oct 7, 2022
Good to go
Hockenson (hip) has no injury designation for Sunday's game against the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Foot and hip injuries have limited his practice participation, but Hockenson has played more than three-quarters of available snaps each week this year, and he broke out in a big way Week 4 with eight catches for 179 yards and two touchdowns in a 48-45 win over Seattle. That was with both DJ Chark (ankle) and Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle) out of the lineup, and while Chark is ruled out for at least one more game, St. Brown is listed as questionable ahead of the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff this Sunday.
Oct 6, 2022
Officially limited Thursday
Hockenson (hip) was limited in practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, the Lions' top running back and wide receiver duo of D'Andre Swift (shoulder/ankle) and Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle) remained sidelined in the second session of Week 5 prep, and receivers DJ Chark (ankle) and Josh Reynolds (ankle) joined Hockenson with a cap in their reps. If both Swift and St. Brown are out Sunday at New England, Hockenson again would be in line for a significant workload after putting up an 8-179-2 line on 12 targets Week 4 against the Seahawks, assuming he gains clearance to play. Friday's practice report may provide clarity on Hockenson's chances to suit up this weekend.
Oct 6, 2022
Returns to practice Thursday
Hockenson (hip) took part in practice Thursday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Among Lions skill-position players that didn't mix into drills Wednesday, Hockenson, DJ Chark (ankle) and Josh Reynolds (ankle) got back on the field, while Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle), D'Andre Swift (shoulder) and Quintez Cephus (foot) did not. Hockenson's activity level won't be known until the team posts its second injury report of Week 5 prep, but his return to practice is a positive sign in advance of Sunday's game at New England.
Oct 5, 2022
Tending to hip issue
Hockenson was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice due to a hip injury.
ANALYSIS
The Lions were without running back D'Andre Swift (shoulder) and wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle) and DJ Chark (ankle) in Week 4 against the Seahawks, and Hockenson benefitted mightily, gathering in eight of 12 targets for 179 yards and two touchdowns. The aforementioned trio of players joined Hockenson on the sideline Wednesday, while Josh Reynolds (ankle) and Quintez Cephus (foot) also didn't practice. Considering the uncertainty in the skill-position ranks, Hockenson could be in line for another huge workload Sunday at New England, but first he'll have to practice and get rid of his injury designation.
Oct 2, 2022
Season-best effort Sunday
Hockenson secured eight of 12 targets for 179 yards and two touchdowns while also securing a two-point conversion pass in the Lions' 48-45 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
With the Lions down valued short-to-mid-range targets D'Andre Swift (shoulder) and Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle), along with DJ Chark (ankle), Hockenson unsurprisingly logged a season high in targets. However, it's what he managed to do with them that stood out, especially considering the talented tight end hadn't topped four receptions or 38 yards in any of the first three games of the season. Hockenson got loose for a 32-yard score in the first quarter, then added the two-point conversion grab early in the fourth following a Josh Reynolds TD and made his final trip to the end zone on a four-yard touchdown catch with 5:26 remaining. The 2019 first-round pick also had a game-long 81-yard catch and run in the second half, making it a career-best day overall. Hockenson will aim to carry over some of the massive Week 4 momentum into a Week 5 road battle against the Patriots, although if even just St. Brown returns, the former's target volume could certainly take a hit.
Sep 30, 2022
Good to go
Hockenson (foot) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against Seattle, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson missed practice Wednesday and was limited Thursday before closing out the week with a full session Friday. He gets a nice matchup against the struggling Seattle defense, and his target-share projection improves with Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle) and D'Andre Swift (shoulder) both out of the lineup. It should lead to more fantasy interest in Hockenson this week, despite his slow start to the season (10-82-1 on 18 targets through three games).
Sep 29, 2022
Returns to practice Thursday
Hockenson (foot) was a limited participant in practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson sat out Wednesday's session due to the foot issue, but his ability to take some reps Thursday seemingly puts him in good position to suit up this weekend against the Seahawks. The availability of other key targets in Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle), DJ Chark (ankle) and D'Andre Swift (shoulder/shoulder) is less certain, and Hockenson could be in store for more involvement in the passing game than usual if any of those three players aren't available Sunday. Through three games, Hockenson is averaging 27.3 receiving yards on six targets per contest.
Sep 28, 2022
Dealing with foot injury
Hockenson (foot) was held out of practice Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was bothered by a hip injury during Week 3 prep but still suited up this past Sunday in Minnesota, reeling in three of four targets for 18 yards and one touchdown. Production has been lacking for the fourth-year tight end this season, as he's compiled a 10-82-1 line on 18 targets through three contests. In the short term, though, Hockenson's status should be watched as the week goes on. with Friday's practice report potentially providing insight into his odds to suit up Sunday versus the Seahawks.
Sep 26, 2022
First touchdown of season
Hockenson caught three of four targets for 18 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
On a day when Josh Reynolds paced the Lions in most receiving categories, Hockenson saw a downturn in targets after seeing seven in each of his first two outings of the year. Fortunately, he salvaged his fantasy day by snagging his first touchdown of the year on a bootleg that left Hockenson wide open in the flats. While fantasy managers still have yet to see a ceiling game out of the fourth-year tight end, it will be interesting to see if Hockenson could become a bigger priority in Detroit's short-area passing game if D'Andre Swift (shoulder) needs to miss time after suffering an injury for the second time in as many weeks.
Sep 25, 2022
Playing in Week 3
Hockenson (hip) is listed as active Sunday at Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Despite having a cap on his practice reps during Week 3 prep, Hockenson will play through a hip issue Sunday. His output has been lacking through two games, with a catch rate of 50 percent and 4.6 YPT on his 14 targets. Fortunately for Hockenson, he's taking on a Vikings defense that has given up a league-worst 10.6 YPT to tight ends this season.
Sep 23, 2022
Deemed questionable, should play
Hockenson (hip) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Justin Rogers of The Detroit News suggests each of the four Lions listed as questionable is likely to play, including Hockenson and RB D'Andre Swift (ankle). The tight end managed limited practice participation Wednesday through Friday, putting him on track to be active ahead of the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff this Sunday. If not, Brock Wright would be the best bet for snaps and targets at tight end for the Lions.
Sep 22, 2022
Another limited practice
Hockenson (hip) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has opened Week 3 prep with back-to-back capped sessions as he deals with a hip injury. He'll look to log every rep Friday, but even if he's unable to, he doesn't seem to be a candidate to sit out Sunday in Minnesota. Friday's practice report could provide some insight into Hockenson's upcoming availability.
Sep 22, 2022
Able to practice Thursday
Hockenson (hip) is participating in practice Thursday, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was limited to begin the week Wednesday, and while the extent of his participation Thursday has yet to be clarified, it's good that he's able to take the field. The 25-year-old tight end doesn't appear to be in danger of sitting out in Week 3 against the Vikings, and he'll look to step up his production after mustering just 64 yards through two games.
Sep 21, 2022
Bothered by hip
Hockenson was a limited practice participant Wednesday with a hip injury.
ANALYSIS
It's likely a minor injury, given that Hockenson managed a limited practice after playing 89 percent of Detroit's snaps on offense in a Week 2 win over Washington. He's seen 14 targets through two weeks while handling an every-down role, but with only seven catches for 64 yards he's still looking for his first productive day as a pass catcher ahead of Sunday's road game against the Vikings.
Sep 19, 2022
Meager production again
Hockenson caught three of seven targets for 26 yards during Sunday's 36-27 win over Washington.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson yet again saw a healthy amount of attention in the passing game, but he again didn't do much with the chances he had outside of a fourth-quarter fingertip catch that went for 18 yards. Instead, Amon-Ra St. Brown remained the focal point of the Lions' passing game while D'Andre Swift, DJ Chark and Josh Reynolds again saw a handful of looks. While Hockenson investors can at least take solace in the fact that the tight end ranks second on the team and top 10 among tight ends in targets in advance of Monday night's games, Hockenson will need to show heightened involvement near the red zone or as a downfield receiver in order to become a reliable fantasy option. Next up is a Week 3 road matchup with the Vikings.
Sep 11, 2022
Earns seven targets
Hockenson caught four of seven targets for 38 yards during Sunday's 38-35 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
The good news is that Hockenson was one of three Lions receivers to earn more than three targets. However, he was generally the target of shorter throws and specifically the target of the pick-six that Jared Goff threw in the first half. Better days should be ahead for Hockenson on the production front as long as he keeps seeing respectable volume, but the sheer number of playmakers Detroit suddenly has on offense could limit his opportunities down the field and in the red zone. Next up for Hockenson is a Week 2 matchup with a Washington team that is uncertain to have standout safety Kamren Curl (thumb) available.
Aug 28, 2022
Gets reps in final preseason tilt
Hockenson caught one of two targets for 15 yards in Sunday's preseason finale against the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson got rested in the Lions' first two preseason games, but head coach Dan Campbell decided to get his starting tight end some work before the regular season begins Sept. 11. The 25-year-old had his fifth-year option picked up this offseason following thumb surgery, and Sunday's preseason appearance confirms the tight end's clean bill of health heading into a Week 1 matchup against the Eagles. Hockenson should be considered a TE1 with some room for growth heading into the 2022 season.
Aug 20, 2022
Likely not playing Saturday
Hockenson is not expected to play in Saturday's preseason contest against the Colts, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
This shouldn't come as a surprise considering coach Dan Campbell hinted Jared Goff among other Lions veterans would not suit up for the contest. Hockenson also didn't play in the preseason opener last week so it's possible the multi-year starter could see action in the exhibition finale next Sunday.
Apr 26, 2022
Fifth-year option picked up
The Lions officially exercised Hockenson's (thumb) fifth year option for 2023 on Tuesday, Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
General manager Brad Holmes indicated in late March the Lions would be picking up the option, and the team made that transaction official Tuesday. A long-term deal could still come to fruition, but Hockenson is now under contract for the next two years. The 24-year-old caught 61 of 84 targets for 583 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games in 2021 before undergoing season-ending thumb surgery. There hasn't been any concern regarding his availability for offseason workouts during the spring and summer.
Mar 30, 2022
Fifth-year option to be exercised
General manager Brad Holmes confirmed Tuesday that he intends to pick up the fifth-year option on Hockenson's (thumb) contract, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Expect the Lions to formally make the decision before the May 2 deadline, though it is possible that Hockenson could agree to a long-term deal before then. In any case, there doesn't seem to be any concern that the tight end's season-ending thumb injury will impact his availability for offseason workouts this spring and summer.
Jan 19, 2022
Should be healthy soon
Hockenson (thumb) recently said he'll be healthy for the start of the Lions' offseason program, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports. "I'm almost there already, and it's only been a few weeks," he said. "Just a few more left, and I'll be 100% by the offseason."
ANALYSIS
The tight end had surgery on his left thumb in mid-December, thus wrapping up 2021 with a 61-583-4 receiving line in 12 games (84 targets, 7.0 per week). Hockenson now enters the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, though the Lions presumably will exercise a fifth-year option before the May 2 deadline. He should retain breakout hype/appeal as he enters his age-25 season, especially if the Lions upgrade at other positions this spring. Hockenson is one of the core pieces of Detroit's rebuild and a true three-down tight end.
Dec 17, 2021
Moved to IR
Hockenson (thumb) was placed on injured reserve Friday.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old tight end had season-ending surgery Thursday on his left thumb, wrapping up 2021 with 61 catches for 583 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games (84 targets). Hockenson should have plenty of time to recover before the offseason program, while Shane Zylstra and Brock Wright are left to take over at tight end for the final four weeks of the 2021 campaign.
Dec 16, 2021
Undergoes season-ending surgery
Hockenson had season-ending surgery on his left thumb Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The first inclination that Hockenson may be dealing with a serious injury was last Thursday, when he was spotted with a heavy wrap on his left hand. He eventually was deemed doubtful for Week 14 action and inactive Sunday in Denver. Upon returning to Detroit earlier this week, coach Dan Campbell relayed hope that Hockenson would be able to play Week 15, but the ensuing procedure will bring his campaign to an abrupt conclusion, with the expectation he'll complete his recovery by the offseason program. Hockenson will end his third season as a pro with 61 catches (on 84 targets) for 583 yards and four touchdowns in 12 appearances. The Lions will turn to Brock Wright and practice squad member Shane Zylstra at tight end down the stretch.
Dec 16, 2021
Absent from practice
Hockenson (hand) isn't participating in Thursday's practice, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Since turning in a limited session last Wednesday due to the left hand injury, Hockenson hasn't taken any reps in any of the Lions' subsequent four practices. He was listed as doubtful before being placed on the inactive list for last week's loss to the Broncos, and unless he gets back on the field in some capacity Friday, Hockenson will likely carry a designation into this weekend's contest against Arizona, if he's not ruled out beforehand. Backup tight ends Shane Zylstra (63 percent of offensive snaps, six targets) and Brock Wright (55 percent, five targets) saw similar workloads and involvement in the passing game while Hockenson was sidelined in Denver.
Dec 15, 2021
No practice Wednesday
Hockenson (hand) will not practice Wednesday, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson couldn't suit up for Week 14's loss to Denver, and though Dan Campbell said he's "hopeful" the tight end will return for Week 15, Burke theorizes that he's trending in the wrong direction. In any case, Hockenson will almost certainly need to return to practice in at least a limited fashion prior to Sunday's game against the Cardinals, if he is to secure any chance of suiting up. Top running back D'Andre Swift (shoulder) is also sitting out Wednesday's session.
Dec 14, 2021
Optimism regarding Week 15 return
Coach Dan Campbell said Monday he's "hopeful" Hockenson (hand) will be available for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Campbell said the same of D'Andre Swift (shoulder), so it looks like it's possible both of Detroit's top offensive weapons could be back on the field versus Arizona. In the event that Hockenson needs more time to rest, however, undrafted rookie Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra will once again be called upon to hold down the fort at tight end.
Dec 12, 2021
Sitting out in Week 14
Hockenson (hand) is inactive for Sunday's game at Denver.
ANALYSIS
After opening Week 14 prep with a limited session, Hockenson didn't practice at all Thursday and Friday. In the process, he was seen Thursday with a heavy wrap on his left hand, an injury that will force his first absence since the 2019 season finale. With Hockenson sidelined, the Lions will trot out undrafted rookie Brock Wright and practice squad member Shane Zylstra at tight end.
Dec 10, 2021
Doubtful for Sunday
Hockenson (hand) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game in Denver, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was a limited practice participant Wednesday before sitting out Thursday and Friday, with Detroit beat reporters noticing a heavy wrap over his left hand. The Lions are woefully thin for the upcoming contest, with around half the roster missing practice time this week due to some combination of injuries, a flu bug and COVID-19. With Hockenson likely missing the upcoming game, Brock Wright figures to step in as Detroit's top tight end.
Dec 10, 2021
Misses practice again
Hockenson (hand) didn't practice Friday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Dan Campbell acknowledged RB D'Andre Swift (shoulder) is unlikely to play this week but didn't make any similar comments about Hockenson. The tight end has now missed back-to-back practices after a limited session Wednesday, with Friday's injury report potentially revealing if he's in real danger of missing the game in Denver on Sunday.
Dec 9, 2021
Sits out Thursday's practice
Hockenson (hand) didn't practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
During the portion of Thursday's session open to the media, Hockenson was spotted with a heavy tape job on his left hand, according to Justin Rogers of The Detroit News. Hockenson's downgrade from limited Wednesday to no activity one day later may merely be maintenance-related, but Friday's injury report will relay whether the tight end is in possible danger of sitting out this weekend.
Dec 8, 2021
Dealing with hand issue
Hockenson (hand) was listed as limited on Wednesday's estimated injury report.
ANALYSIS
The hand injury is a new health concern for Hockenson after avoiding practice limitations since Week 8 prep. During that five-game stretch, he racked up a 23-224-2 line on 31 targets. Assuming he gets past the current issue by week's end, Hockenson again will serve as one of the Lions' top receiving options, but who will be throwing him passes is a question mark with Jared Goff unable to practice Wednesday due to an illness.
Dec 5, 2021
Snags another touchdown
Hockenson caught four of eight targets for 49 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 29-27 win over Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson found the painted area for the second straight week as his up-and-down usage continues. Through 12 games, the tight end has seen eight or more targets eight times while seeing three or less targets in the remaining four games. Thankfully, this week brought with it the former and Hockenson used it to come through with a strong stat line. However, if D'Andre Swift (shoulder) remains sidelined in Week 14, fantasy managers will need to cross their fingers he doesn't get schemed out of the game plan by a decent Denver secondary.

Snags Thanksgiving touchdown
Hockenson secured three of three targets for 35 yards and one touchdown during Thursday's 16-14 loss to Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Not only entering the week outside the top 60 players in terms of red-zone targets, Hockenson has now seen eight or more targets seven times while logging three or less targets in the other four outings. While this up-and-down usage has occasionally been a death sentence for his fantasy output, the Iowa product managed to overcome his minimal usage Thursday by snagging a 17-yard score in the third quarter. However, that was just his second touchdown since Week 2, and it may be difficult to build upon this performance in Week 13 against a Vikings defense that has allowed the fewest fantasy points to tight ends in 2021.
Nov 21, 2021
Bounces back with six receptions
Hockenson recorded six receptions on eight targets for 51 yards in Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
After failing to find the stat sheet against Pittsburgh in Week 10, Hockenson bounced back to record at least six receptions for the fourth time in his last five games. His biggest gain of the day came late in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard reception, though the drive ultimately stalled and concluded in a punt. While he was otherwise limited to short-area catches, Hockenson has now topped 50 yards in five contests this season heading into a Week 12 matchup against the Bears.
Nov 14, 2021
Blanked by Steelers
Hockenson was targeted once but he did not record a catch during Sunday's 16-16 tie with the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
It is not believed that Hockenson was dealing with any sort of injury. Instead, it seemed like he was yet again victim to Detroit's Jared Goff-led passing attack that generated 114 yards on the day. Since Hockenson entered the week averaging eight targets per game with 31 targets in his previous three games, fantasy managers should expect some sort of rebound in Week 11 against Cleveland, but this outing should be a reminder that the floor for even Goff's best pass catchers is apparently zero in any given week.
Oct 31, 2021
Snags double-digit receptions
Hockenson caught 10 of 11 targets for 89 yards during Sunday's 44-6 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Seeing more than double the number of targets as the next closest player on the team, Hockenson was the only avenue through which the Lions were able to find success. However, through eight games, the tight end has now seen at least eight targets six times, which is a claim that only one other tight end in the NFL (Travis Kelce) can make. While Hockenson won't have Kelce's upside as long as Jared Goff is throwing him the ball, his usage rate is elite and it's likely that Hockenson is just approaching his physical peak. The No. 8 pick of the 2019 NFL Draft will remain a top fantasy option when the Lions return from their Week 9 bye.
Oct 29, 2021
Cleared for Week 8
Hockenson (ankle/knee) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Despite being listed on the injury report for much of the season, Hockenson has played at least 80 percent of snaps on offense in every game, with his 53 targets narrowly topping D'Andre Swift's 52 for the team lead. The third-year tight end should be a big part of Detroit's gameplan this Sunday against a slumping Philadelphia defense.
Oct 28, 2021
Remains limited at practice
Hockenson (ankle/knee) was limited at Thursday's practice, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site
ANALYSIS
Despite a rotating cast of Lions wide receivers, Hockenson hasn't been incredibly efficient with his workload, with his 53 targets going at a clip of 6.8 YPT. He's also reached the end zone just twice in seven games. Assuming he puts his ankle and knee injuries behind him ahead of Sunday's game, Hockenson will look to exploit an Eagles defense that has given up the second-most catches (46, tied with the Ravens) to tight ends this season.
Oct 27, 2021
Dealing with ankle, knee injuries
Hockenson (ankle/knee) practiced in a limited fashion Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has been saddled with a knee injury for most of October, and now an ankle issue has reared its head on the practice report. In three games dealing with the former, he compiled a modest 16-144-0 receiving line on 23 targets. Hockenson again will look to ditch the designations before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff against the Eagles, if not by the release of the Lions' final Week 8 injury report Friday.
Oct 24, 2021
Busy but inefficient
Hockenson (knee) caught six receptions for 48 yards on nine targets against the Rams on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The Rams were well aware that the Lions would try to feed Hockenson in this one and prepared accordingly, including setting elite corner against Hockenson at times. Although Hockenson's efficiency was lacking Sunday and the struggles of quarterback Jared Goff might make that an ongoing risk, the nine-target usage for Hockenson is rather encouraging. It wasn't an easy matchup for Hockenson, yet the ball headed his way often. He'll face the Eagles in Week 8.
Oct 24, 2021
Playing Sunday
Hockenson (knee) is listed as active Sunday versus the Rams in L.A.
ANALYSIS
For a third straight week, Hockenson is gutting out a knee injury on game day. On the first two contests, he hauled in 10 of 14 targets for 96 yards. Another semi-fruitful outing could be on tap against a Rams defense that has given up the ninth-most yards (364, tied with the Cowboys) to tight ends this season.
Oct 22, 2021
Listed as questionable
Hockenson (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams.
ANALYSIS
The tight end logged limited practices Thursday and Friday after sitting out Wednesday's session. He'll likely continue playing through his knee injury, this time in a tough matchup with the stellar Rams defense.
Oct 21, 2021
Limited in return to practice
Hockenson (knee) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was withheld from the Lions' first Week 7 practice Wednesday, but his return to the field Thursday in a limited capacity suggests his absence from the field a day earlier may have been mostly for maintenance purposes. Hockenson may need to practice fully Friday to avoid carrying a questionable designation into Sunday's game against the Rams, but regardless, he appears on track to play this weekend.
Oct 21, 2021
Back at practice
Hockenson (knee) returned to practice Thursday, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson didn't participate in Wednesday's practice, but the tight end's return for Thursday's session bodes well for his chances of suiting up for Sunday's contest against the Rams. That said, it wouldn't surprise us to see Hockenson listed as questionable come Friday, as he was in advance of Week 6 action, before suiting suiting up this past Sunday against the Bengals, en route to catching eight of his 11 targets for 74 yards.
Oct 20, 2021
Sits out practice
Hockenson (knee) didn't participate in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
The Lions haven't suggested that Hockenson suffered any sort of setback with his lingering knee injury coming out of the team's Week 6 loss to the Bengals, so his absence from Wednesday's session may have been for maintenance purposes more than anything. Though he failed to find the end zone for the fourth straight game last week, Hockenson tied his season high with 11 targets and caught eight balls for 74 yards.
Oct 17, 2021
Back to double-digit targets
Hockenson caught eight of 11 targets for 74 yards during Sunday's 34-11 loss to the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was the only reasonably productive member of the Lions offense before the game turned into a total blowout. After a number of duds the past few weeks, this output has to be a welcomed sight for fantasy managers, especially in PPR formats. While Hockenson's efficiency could be volatile from week to week as long as he's attached to Jared Goff, we can at least expect the Lions' incompetent defense to continue to force the offense into passing situations, which should allow Hockenson to continue adding to his team-leading 44 targets through six weeks.
Oct 17, 2021
Playing Sunday
Hockenson (knee) is active for Sunday's game against the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
For the second straight contest, Hockenson is coming off a week in which his practice reps were capped by a knee issue. Still, he logged 81 percent of the offensive snaps last Sunday at Minnesota, which is in the realm of his usual workload (81-93 percent on any given game this season). Hockenson has been relatively quiet since reaching the end zone in Weeks 1 and 2, and he may have a tough time producing Sunday versus a Cincy defense that has allowed just 30.6 receiving yards per game to tight ends this season.
Oct 17, 2021
Expected to play against Bengals
Hockenson (knee), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bengals, is expected to play, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson played through the same injury last week and handled an 81 percent snap share against Minnesota. Limited practices Thursday and Friday put him on track to play again, with the Lions and Bengals kicking off at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Oct 15, 2021
Officially listed as questionable
Hockenson (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bengals, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson played through the same injury last week and handled 81 percent snap share against Minnesota, though he finished with only two catches for 22 yards on three targets. Limited practices Thursday and Friday put him on track to play again, with the Lions and Bengals kicking off at 1:00 ET.
Oct 14, 2021
Puts in limited practice
Hockenson (knee) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson is managing the knee injury for the second week in a row, but the Lions haven't provided any indication that he suffered a setback coming out of Sunday's loss to the Vikings. Though he was held to just 22 yards on two receptions in the contest and then didn't practice Wednesday, Hockenson's return to the field Thursday likely puts him on pace to play this weekend against Cincinnati. However, Hockenson may need to upgrade to full activity Friday to avoid taking a questionable tag into the matchup.
Oct 14, 2021
Back at practice
Hockenson (knee) was present for Thursday's practice, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It remains to be seen how the Lions list the tight end's participation level, but Hockenson's return to the field, in any capacity, represents a positive indicator with regard to his Week 6 status. Last week, Hockenson also followed a Wednesday DNP with a return to practice Thursday before being listed as questionable for this past Sunday's game against the Vikings, which he ended up suiting up for. That pattern could well be repeated in advance of this weekend's game against the Bengals.
Oct 13, 2021
Bothered by knee again
Hockenson (knee) didn't practice Wednesday, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was listed as questionable with the same injury last week, ultimately playing 81 percent of offensive snaps but catching just two passes for 22 yards on three targets in a 19-17 loss to Minnesota. A return to practice Thursday or Friday would put him on track to play again this Sunday against the Bengals.
Oct 10, 2021
Active in Week 5
Hockenson (knee) is active for Sunday's game at Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
After missing practice to begin Week 5 prep, Hockenson managed to put in limited sessions Thursday and Friday and set himself up to be a game-time decision. He's made the necessary progress to play Sunday, but it bears watching whether he'll be able to handle his typical 80-plus percent of the offensive snaps. After a relatively quiet Weeks 3 and 4 -- a combined six catches for 52 yards and no TDs on 10 targets -- Hockenson will look to get back on track against a Vikings defense that has conceded the third highest YPT (10.5 yards) to tight ends this season.
Oct 8, 2021
Listed as questionable
Hockenson (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Minnesota, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
He seems to have picked up the injury last week, though he saw eight targets and 82 percent snap share in a 24-14 loss to the Bears. Hockenson was then held out of Wednesday's practice, before logging limited sessions Thursday and Friday. It sounds like he's truly questionable, with the tight end noting that he'll ice his knee Saturday and hope for the best Sunday morning, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Hockenson also mentioned that his injury is a result of repeated hits to his knees, rather than any structural/internal issue. Still, fantasy managers should treat him as a game-time call ahead of the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff Sunday, with Darren Fells likely filling in as Detroit's top tight end if Hockenson can't go.
Oct 7, 2021
Limited in return to practice
Hockenson (knee) was listed as a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson took a step forward with his activity after not practicing in any capacity Wednesday, but according to Kyle Meinke of MLive.com, the tight end wasn't doing much on the field during Thursday's session. With that in mind, Hockenson's status for Sunday's game against the Vikings could truly be in question, potentially further weakening a winless Lions squad that is already expected to be missing three starting offensive linemen (tackles Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell and center Frank Ragnow) in Week 5. The Lions will evaluate Hockenson at Friday's practice before deciding whether he'll carry an injury designation into the weekend.
Oct 6, 2021
Misses practice with knee injury
Hockenson was held out of Wednesday's practice with a knee injury, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the first time Hockenson has been listed on the injury report since he was a full participant in Week 1 after recovering from a summer shoulder injury. There were no signs of workload limitation in the Week 4 loss to Chicago, with Hockenson seeing eight targets on 82 percent of snaps.
Oct 3, 2021
Usage back to expected levels
Hockenson caught four of eight targets for 42 yards during Sunday's 24-14 loss to Chicago.
ANALYSIS
This probably wasn't the rebound fantasy managers wanted to see from Hockenson after he caught just two of two targets for 10 yards last week. However, outside of that Week 3 dud, Hockenson has averaged over nine targets per game, which would rank higher than any other tight end not named Travis Kelce or Darren Waller. As one of the busiest tight ends in the game, Hockenson will look to get back on track in Week 5 against a Vikings team that could pile up points on Detroit's underwhelming defense.
Sep 26, 2021
Bottled up by Ravens
Hockenson caught two of two targets for 10 yards during Sunday's 19-17 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
After totaling 20 targets over the first two weeks of the season, Hockenson saw just two passes sent his way as the Ravens took away one of Jared Goff's safety valves. However, thanks in part to a surprising showing from the subpar Detroit defense, Goff also attempted just 30 passes after throwing 93 over the first two outings. With Goff more likely than not to attempt more throws than that in a given game, there should be plenty of better days ahead for Hockenson and his fantasy investors.
Sep 20, 2021
Another touchdown Monday
Hockenson caught eight of nine targets for 66 yards and a touchdown in Monday night's 35-17 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson led the Lions in all major receiving categories, with his night highlighted by an eight-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone during the second quarter. The third-year pro has now scored in consecutive games to begin this season, catching eight passes in both outings as well. Amid Detroit's underwhelming receiving corps, Hockenson's consistency and volume in the passing game makes him a rather valuable commodity at tight end. He'll look to keep his strong form going in Week 3 versus the Ravens.
Sep 12, 2021
Top option in passing game
Hockenson caught eight of 10 targets for 97 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 41-33 loss to San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Hockenson and D'Andre Swift (11 targets) were the Lions' top options in the passing game as Jared Goff struggled to attack the 49ers' questionable group of cornerbacks. While it should be noted that Detroit fell down 38-10 halfway through the third quarter -- which played a large role in Goff attempting a hefty 57 passes, and, in turn, Hockenson, seeing double-digit targets -- the Lions defense may be bad enough to regularly force Goff to throw at will. Hockenson should be one of the top fantasy options at tight end when Detroit travels to Green Bay in Week 2.
Sep 8, 2021
Ready for season opener
Hockenson (shoulder) was a full practice participant Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson suffered an AC joint sprain on Aug. 10 and missed the entire preseason, but his availability for Week 1 was never in serious doubt. He's one of the few tight ends with a decent shot to lead his team in targets, albeit in what likely will be a bottom-10 offense. Hockenson and the Lions start off with a tricky matchup, hosting a 49ers defense that has DEs Nick Bosa and Dee Ford coming off the edge and LB Fred Warner covering the middle of the field.
Aug 25, 2021
Managing shoulder injury
Coach Dan Campbell revealed Tuesday that Hockenson is dealing with a AC joint issue in his shoulder, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has been dealing with the injury for the past couple weeks, though the nature of the issue was previously undisclosed. The 24-year-old is participating at practice this week, and there isn't much concern about him being ready for the Sept. 12 season opener against the 49ers.
Aug 23, 2021
Participating in practice
Hockenson (undisclosed) participated in Monday's practice and said afterward that he does not feel like he needs any snaps in Friday's preseason finale against the Colts to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
While the Lions only held a light practice Monday, Hockenson reportedly was impressive while catching passes in 1-on-1 drills. Granted, he was wearing a red non-contact jersey, but that arrangement only seemed like a precaution. Barring a setback, Hockenson seems well on track to be ready for the regular-season opener.
Aug 19, 2021
Out for second preseason game
Hockenson (undisclosed) won't play in Saturday's preseason game against Pittsburgh but should ramp up his practice involvement next week, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson left practice early Aug. 10 and missed the Lions' preseason opener last Friday. It sounds like he'll have time to get ready for the season opener, with perhaps some chance for an appearance in the third and final preseason game Aug. 27 against Indianapolis. Given the unimpressive state of Detroit's wideout room, Hockenson remains the favorite to lead the team in Week 1 targets.
Aug 13, 2021
Sits out Week 1 of preseason
Hockenson (undisclosed) didn't suit up for Friday's preseason opener against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
With Hockenson out, new Lions quarterback Jared Goff primarily targeted Tyrell Williams, who finished with two catches for 30 yards on four targets. Once healthy, Hockenson's likely to become Goff's top option in the passing game. The tight end, whom Detroit selected in the first round of the 2019 draft, will look to get healthy prior to Week 2 of preseason, when the Lions will travel to Pittsburgh.
Aug 11, 2021
Dealing with minor injury
Hockenson got banged up during Tuesday's practice, exiting early with an undisclosed injury, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Dan Campbell used the words 'minor' and 'precautionary' when discussing Hockenson, who subsequently missed practice Wednesday morning, per Chris Burke of The Athletic. Even if his injury isn't serious, the tight end isn't likely to play in Friday's preseason opener against the Bills. Hockenson's absence would leave Darren Fells as Detroit's top tight end, followed on the depth chart by a slew of young players with minimal pro experience.
Jul 27, 2021
Ready for huge workload
Hockenson is "poised for even more" this season, according to Benjamin Raven of MLive.com.
ANALYSIS
Despite having major ankle surgery at the end of his rookie season, Hockenson bounced back in Year 2 to start 16 games, handling 73.2 percent snap share and 101 targets. The eighth overall pick from the 2019 Draft could now see even more work in his third NFL season, after the Lions traded QB Matthew Stafford for Jared Goff and then lost WRs Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones in free agency. Touchdowns may be hard to come by on a rebuilding team, but Hockenson is one of the few tight ends in the league who is considered the favorite to lead his team in targets. The volume alone should make him a fantasy asset, and there's plenty of upside if takes another step forward while Goff turns in a competent season.
Jan 3, 2021
Quiet in season-ending loss
Hockenson caught three of three targets for 25 receiving yards during Sunday's 37-35 loss to Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson's numbers are a little disappointing given the mouthwatering matchup, but he still tied for second on the team in targets on a day where Marvin Jones stole the show with eight catches for 180 yards and two scores on 11 looks. Regardless, he will now turn the page on a highly successful sophomore campaign that saw the 2019 first-round pick grab 67 receptions for 723 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games after recording 32 catches for 367 yards and two scores in 12 games as a rookie. While Hockenson has yet to flash the upside that makes Travis Kelce and George Kittle such valuable fantasy assets at the tight end position, the sky is the limit for the 23-year-old who will be going to his first Pro Bowl this winter.
Dec 26, 2020
Quiet after Stafford injury
Hockenson caught four of six targets for 23 yards in Saturday's 47-7 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Matthew Stafford hurt his ankle on Detroit's first drive, and the combination of Chase Daniel and David Blough guided the offense to zero points, leading to underwhelming performances from all of the team's skill position players. This was the fifth-lowest yardage total of Hockenson's breakout sophomore season, but the tight end has been held to fewer than 25 yards in consecutive games heading into next week's season finale against Minnesota.
Dec 20, 2020
Fumbles on final drive
Hockenson caught two of four targets for 18 yards and carried once for no yards with one fumble during Sunday's 46-25 loss to Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
After seeing 20 total targets in his first two games with Darrell Bevell as interim head coach, Hockenson was disappointingly keyed on by a Titans secondary that entered the game allowing the fourth-highest completion rate (76.8 percent) and eighth-most yards per target (8.3) to tight ends in 2020. D'Andre Swift's involvement near the goal line also played a role in Hockenson's disappointing turnout, and Hockenson also fumbled on an end around on a critical third-and-one during a potential game-tying drive in the fourth quarter. While Hockenson seemingly has a solid chance to rebound in Week 16 against a Buccaneers team allowing a league-high 79.7 percent completion rate to tight ends, fantasy managers should keep in mind the possibility for Detroit, with nothing to play for at this point, to rest quarterback Matthew Stafford for the team's final two games of the regular season.
Dec 14, 2020
Season-high 11 targets
Hockenson caught six of 11 targets for 43 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 31-24 loss to Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
With Kenny Golladay (hip) still out and Detroit playing from behind most of the day, Hockenson was busy and saw a new season-high in targets. The Packers didn't let him do much with those opportunities, though, and Hockenson's touchdown came on a designed shovel pass from one yard out. While the potential absence of Matthew Stafford (ribs) in Week 15 is not good news for the young tight end, a downgrade in quarterback play isn't the end of the world for a top-shelf talent like Hockenson against a Titans defense that has given up the fourth-most yards per target to tight ends (8.1) in 2020.
Dec 6, 2020
Reels in seven passes
Hockenson caught seven of his nine targets for 84 yards during Sunday's 34-30 win against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was a vital contributor in crunch time, recording three receptions for 33 yards (on five targets) during the fourth quarter. This isn't the first occasion this season the second-year tight end has delivered in the clutch, as he also recorded a game-tying touchdown Week 7 against the Falcons as time expired in regulation. He's posted 242 receiving yards on 16 receptions over his past three games, as the Lions prepare to host the Packers in Week 14. Though it ultimately came in a losing effort, Eagles tight ends posted seven catches for 97 yards against Green Bay on Sunday.
Nov 26, 2020
Leading receiver in loss
Hockenson caught five of eight targets for 89 yards in Thursday's 41-25 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
While Marvin Jones caught one more ball, it was Hockenson who led Detroit in receiving yards on the afternoon. The second-year tight end has caught multiple passes in every game so far this season, and he should remain one of Matthew Stafford's main options in Week 13's road contest against the Bears.
Nov 25, 2020
Ready to go Week 12
Hockenson (shoulder) does not carry an injury designation for Thursday's game against the Texans, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson began the week with two straight limited practices, but he managed to upgrade to a full session Wednesday. The top tight end get have the benefit of Matthew Stafford (thumb) under center Thursday, and with Kenny Golladay (hip) and Danny Amendola (hip) both ruled out he could draw increased target volume versus Houston.
Nov 24, 2020
Limited in practice Tuesday
Hockenson (shoulder) was a limited participant in Tuesday's practice, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A second straight limited session to start the week signals that Hockenson should be good to go for Thursday's game against the Texans. The 23-year-old tight end posted a season-high 68 receiving yards last week against the Panthers, and he could garner a similar amount of opportunities if Kenny Golladay (hip) sits out again.
Nov 23, 2020
Listed as limited participant
Hockenson was listed as a limited participant with a shoulder injury on Monday's practice estimation, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old entered Sunday's loss to Carolina with a toe injury, and he apparently picked up the shoulder issue while catching four of seven targets for a season-high 68 yards. Hockenson appears on track to be available for the Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Texans, and he could avoid an injury designation if he can put in a full practice in the next two days.
Nov 22, 2020
New season-high in receiving yards
Hockenson caught four of seven targets for 68 yards during Sunday's 20-0 loss to the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
On a day the Detroit offense generally struggled without each of Kenny Golladay (hip), Danny Amendola (hip) and D'Andre Swift (concussion), Hockenson managed to set a new season-high in receiving yardage. Now with at least a touchdown or 60 yards receiving in eight of 10 games this season, Hockenson has been a model of consistency at an otherwise weak fantasy position. While he's yet to display the upside he showed in the 2019 season opener when the then-rookie had 131 yards and a score against Arizona, Hockenson is set up for one of his best matchups of the season in Week 12 against a Texans defense allowing the sixth-most yards per pass attempt (7.8) in 2020.
Nov 20, 2020
Good to go Sunday
Hockenson (toe) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game in Carolina, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has been listed with a toe injury for almost a month now, but he's still handled at least four targets and 60 percent of offensive snaps in every game this season. He figures to be a big part of the Week 11 gameplan, with Kenny Golladay (hip), Danny Amendola (hip) and D'Andre Swift (concussion) all ruled out.
Nov 19, 2020
Remains limited
Hockenson (toe) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson's reps were capped for the second day in a row, but the Lions don't seem to have any real concern that he'll miss Sunday's game against the Panthers. If Hockenson can upgrade to full activity Friday, he'll likely avoid taking an injury designation into the weekend.
Nov 18, 2020
Limited by toe injury
Hockenson (toe) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson managed to play through his toe injury during last weekend's narrow win over Washington, but the issue clearly plagued him on the field. The second-year pro caught just two of four targets for 13 yards without a score, recording his worst fantasy day of the season. Detroit's receiving corps is now nursing a bounty of injuries, as Kenny Golladay (hip) was limited Wednesday while all of Matthew Stafford (thumb), Marvin Jones (knee) and Danny Amendola (hip) were held out, so it would provide the team with a notable boost if Hockenson can get fully healthy in time for Sunday's game in Carolina.
Nov 15, 2020
Two catches against Washington
Hockenson caught two of four targets for 13 yards during Sunday's 30-27 win over Washington.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson had been a model of consistency at a weak fantasy position all year, but he was exposed by a Washington unit that entered the game allowing the seventh-most fantasy points to tight ends. Perhaps the toe injury that popped up Thursday slowed him down, but there also seemed to be a clear Lions gameplan to feed running back D'Andre Swift and Marvin Jones ended up seeing a season-high 10 targets. Hockenson will look to rebound in Week 11 against a declining Panthers defense that is allowing the seventh-highest completion rate in 2020.
Nov 15, 2020
Good to go Sunday
Hockenson (toe) is active for Sunday's game against Washington.
ANALYSIS
The 2019 first-round pick was officially questionable to face the Football Team, though Rapsheet indicated in the early morning he was on track to play Week 10. Hockenson has five touchdowns through eight games and is averaging 4.3 catches and 45 yards per contest, but he could see more work in the passing game Sunday with top wideout Kenny Golladay (hip) unavailable.
Nov 15, 2020
Expected to be active Sunday
Hockenson (toe) is expected to play Sunday against Washington, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson -- who's scored TDs in four of his last five games, was added to the Lions' Week 10 injury report following a Thursday DNP, but was able to practice in a limited fashion Friday. Confirmation of his status will arrive before the first wave of Sunday kickoffs, with the Lions facing the Washington Football Team at 1:00 ET.
Nov 13, 2020
Questionable after limited practice
Hockenson (toe) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Washington, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was a mid-week addition to the injury report, albeit with the same toe issue that limited his practice participation last week. He was held out of Thursday's practice entirely, before returning Friday as a limited participant. There hasn't been any suggestion the injury is serious, but fantasy managers would be wise to check back when the Lions release their inactive list approximately 90 minutes prior to the 1 ET kickoff Sunday.

Toe injury surfaces
Hockenson (toe) did not practice Thursday, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report, a hint that he may have sustained his toe issue during weekly practices. The extent of his participation during Friday's session should shed light on Hockenson's chances of suiting up against Washington, but for the time being question marks surround the second-year tight end's availability. With Kenny Golladay (hip) trending in the wrong direction for Week 10, and absence on Hockenson's part could leave Detroit's pass catching corps depleted of two of its top options.

Commands eight targets
Hockenson recorded five receptions on eight targets for 39 yards and a touchdown in Week 9 against the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson maintained an increased role in the absence of Kenny Golladay (hip), as only Danny Amendola commanded more targets. He worked close to the line of scrimmage and averaged only 7.8 yards per catch, with his longest reception of the day going for 11 yards. That was the cause of an uninspiring stat line for Hockenson until he hauled in a two-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter from backup quarterback Chase Daniel. Hockenson has solidified his role in the Lions' offense, logging at least six targets in each of past three games. He'll look to work deeper down the field in Week 10 against Washington.

Puts in full practice
Hockenson (toe) was a full participant in Thursday's practice.
ANALYSIS
The tight end took a step up after being limited in Wednesday's session, clearing up any concern about his availability for Sunday's game in Minnesota. With at least a touchdown or 50-plus receiving yards in each of his seven games this season, Hockenson has been a consistent fantasy producer for his managers. He'll draw a juicy matchup versus a suspect Vikings pass defense this weekend, though Hockenson may have to catch passes from Chase Daniel, who would start at quarterback if Matthew Stafford isn't able to return from the reserve/COVID-19 list when first eligible Sunday.

Dealing with toe injury
Hockenson (toe) was limited at Wednesday's practice, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
While Hockenson didn't find the end zone this past Sunday against the Colts, he otherwise had season bests across the board (seven catches for 65 yards on 10 targets). He may have been helped by Kenny Golladay's departure early in the third quarter due to a hip issue, which is expected to sideline him for at least one game. Still, if Hockenson is able to gut out his toe injury Sunday at Minnesota, he may be on the receiving end of passes from Chase Daniel after Matthew Stafford was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday.

Sees double-digit targets
Hockenson caught seven of 10 targets for 65 yards during Sunday's 41-21 loss to the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson saw the second-most targets of his young career in a game where he served as a quality safety valve for quarterback Matthew Stafford. While the exit of top receiver Kenny Golladay (hips) likely had something to do with his increased workload, Hockenson has been a steady contributor all season and drawing double-digit targets is certainly within his range of outcomes even on days where Golladay stays healthy. Regardless of Golladay's health, Hockenson should remain a solid option at a thin fantasy position when Detroit takes on a poor Vikings defense in Week 9.
Oct 27, 2020
Late TD proves to be difference
Hockenson caught five of his six targets for 59 receiving yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 23-22 win against the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson snared a game-tying 11-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford as time expired Sunday, with Matt Prater clinching the win for Detroit by way of a 48-yard extra point. The 2019 No. 8 overall pick has tallied a TD in three consecutive games, though he was held under 20 receiving yards in two of those outings. Hockenson has enjoyed a healthy workload of 5.2 targets per game, but a Week 8 matchup against Indianapolis is prohibitive. The Colts are yet to surrender a tight end TD in 2020, and also have allowed the second-fewest receptions to the position (17).
Oct 18, 2020
Catches short touchdown
Hockenson recorded two receptions on five targets for 17 yards and a touchdown in Week 6 against the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson tied for second on the team with five targets, but turned in his second-lowest yardage total of the season. He salvaged his day with a one-yard touchdown, his third of the campaign. Although Hockenson topped 50 yards in his first three games, he has combined to total 26 yards across the last two contests. He'll look to get things back on track in Week 7 in a positive matchup against Atlanta.
Oct 4, 2020
Finds end zone on quiet day
Hockenson caught two of four targets for nine yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 35-29 loss to the Saints. He also caught a two-point conversion.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was mostly held quiet by a Saints defense that had been the weakest in the league at defending tight ends coming into the game, though the second-year tight end was able to salvage his day with a one-yard touchdown in the third quarter. His two-point conversion capped the scoring, as Detroit never got the ball back after pulling within six with 3:40 to go. Hockenson has caught 15 of 20 targets for 180 yards and two touchdowns heading into Detroit's Week 5 bye.
Sep 28, 2020
Unaffected by Golladay's return
Hockenson caught four of seven targets for 53 yards during Sunday's 26-23 victory over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson remained a focal point in the passing game despite the return of Golladay, who tied with Hockenson for the team lead in targets. As only one tight end in the league (Noah Fant) currently has a higher passer rating when targeted than Hockenson's gaudy measure of 155.8, per Pro Football Focus, there's a case to be made that Hockenson should be more involved going forward. However, there could also be more days when the Lions opt to pound the rock 22 times with Adrian Peterson, whose heavy usage at the expense of second-round pick D'Andre Swift suggests Detroit was trying to stick to the running game. The chances of the Lions being able to control the clock in Week 4 seem low against a Saints team that has allowed the fifth-fewest yards per carry in the league through three weeks.
Sep 21, 2020
Catches every pass sent his way
Hockenson caught four of four targets for 62 yards during Sunday's 42-21 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
The absences of Kenny Golladay (hamstring) and Halapoulivaati Vaitai (foot) seems to have thrown a wrench in the Lions' offensive plans. While Hockenson has secured all nine of the passes sent his way through two weeks, he's only seen one target in the red zone, and his overall upside is likely capped as long as the Lions offense continues to struggle. If Golladay, in particular, remains out in Week 3, expectations for Hockenson should remain capped despite a seemingly inviting matchup with the Cardinals. Even though the Arizona defense was notoriously poor at defending tight ends in 2019, the re-tooled unit has only allowed 11 receptions for 84 yards and no scores through two weeks.
Sep 13, 2020
Catches touchdown in season opener
Hockenson caught five of five targets for 56 yards during Sunday's 27-23 loss to Chicago.
ANALYSIS
A case could be made that Hockenson should have seen more passes on a day Stafford attempted 42 of them without Kenny Golladay (hamstring) at his disposal. However, Hockenson nonetheless did the most with what he was given. His score came by boxing out a defender in the end zone for a four-yard touchdown. Should Golladay remain sidelined in Week 2, Hockenson will have another chance of seeing an expanded workload in a potentially high-scoring game against Green Bay.

Back to 100 percent
Hockenson said Thursday that he's "100 percent" healthy after he underwent season-ending right ankle surgery last December, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was already assumed to be healthy entering the season after he wasn't included on the first 2020 injury report the Lions released Wednesday, but it's at least encouraging that the tight end confirmed he's back to full strength after he admitted in mid-August that he wasn't quite back to 100 percent. The 2019 first-round pick will head into his sophomore season as the Lions' starting tight end, and the high-end athleticism he packs into his 6-foot-5, 251-pound frame should give him a decent chance to emerge as a top-10 fantasy option at his position.
Aug 17, 2020
Not 100 percent yet
Hockenson says his surgically repaired ankle isn't quite back to 100 percent strength, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell made a similar comment in mid-June, noting that the tight end had resumed running routes but likely would need more time to regain his pre-injury explosiveness. Hockenson is working his way back from the ankle injury that ended his rookie season in Week 12, and while he's been able to practice with teammates to this point in training camp, it sounds like he's a work in progress. He has four weeks to ramp things up before the Lions are scheduled to face the Bears on Sept. 13.

Taken off COVID-19 list
Hockenson was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
This means Hockenson cleared multiple physicals as well as tests in order to be reinstated from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Hockenson, Kenny Golladay and a number of other Lions have been removed from the list in recent days, setting the stage for each player to return to practice.
Jul 29, 2020
Lands on COVID-19 list
Hockenson has been placed on the Lions' reserve/COVID-19 list, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson's placement on the list mans that he has either tested positive for COVID-19 or has been in close contact with an infected person. The 2019 first-rounder -- who is also bouncing back from an ankle injury -- is in line to serve as the Lions' top tight end in 2020.
Jun 17, 2020
Getting closer to 100 percent
Lions offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said Hockenson has resumed running routes, but the tight end's right ankle may not be 100 percent, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson had a star crossed rookie season. After reeling off 131 yards and a TD on six catches Week 1 against the Cardinals, he surpassed 50 yards just one time in his 11 other appearances, finishing with a 32-367-2 line on 59 targets. Injuries limited him along the way, including a concussion, shoulder issue and ankle concern, the latter of which resulted in his placement on IR on Dec. 2. The Lions never confirmed whether Hockenson underwent surgery, but he was seen on a scooter in late December, indicating he had some sort of procedure. Bevell added Hockenson is "well on his way to being there," so he likely will be out there once the Lions reconvene for training camp.
Jan 28, 2020
Recovering from ankle injury
Hockenson (ankle) was still using a scooter to get around in late December, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
There hasn't been any substantiative update on Hockenson's recovery from the season-ending ankle injury he suffered in late November. His continued use of a scooter a full month later suggests he had surgery, but neither player nor team has provided confirmation. The eighth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft finished his rookie season with 32 catches for 367 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games, struggling to make an impact after his 6-131-1 explosion Week 1 at Arizona. Hockenson was limited to 4.7 yards per target after the opener, including 3.4 YPT in his four games without Matthew Stafford (back) in the lineup. Stafford and Hockenson should both have time to get healthy before Week 1 of 2020.
Dec 2, 2019
Heading to IR
Coach Matt Patricia said the Lions will be placing Hockenson (ankle) on injured reserve, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson started his rookie campaign with a bang, corralling six of nine targets for 131 yards and a touchdown Week 1 at Arizona. Since then, he's contended with a concussion and right shoulder injury, but he's also topped out at 56 receiving yards (Week 9 in Oakland) and scored just one more TD (Week 4 versus the Chiefs) in the ensuing 11 contests. Near the end of the Lions' last game Thanksgiving day against the Bears, Hockenson's lower leg bent in an awkward fashion, requiring him to use a walking boot and scooter afterward. Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com clarified the injury as to Hockenson's ankle, and while the tight end will miss the rest of the season, Patricia told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press that the Lions don't have enough info yet to know if surgery will be ordered up.

Suiting up Thursday
Hockenson (shoulder) is listed as active Thursday versus the Bears.
ANALYSIS
After showing up Saturday on the practice report with a shoulder injury, Hockenson now will play two games in the span of five days. With undrafted rookie David Blough under center, Hockenson may be called upon to block more often than not against a tough Bears front seven. Moreover, Hockenson may split reps with fellow tight ends Jesse James and Logan Thomas, though the latter (a college quarterback) may be the emergency QB option due to Jeff Driskel's sore hamstring.
Nov 27, 2019
Officially questionable
Hockenson (shoulder) is officially listed as questionable for Thursday's contest against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, which is a good sign for his availability after being limited during the week's first two sessions. If the rookie first-round pick manages to suit up for Thanksgiving's divisional contest, he stands to split work with fellow tight ends Jesse James and Logan Thomas.
Nov 26, 2019
Limited again Tuesday
Hockenson (shoulder) was limited at Tuesday's walkthrough, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has maintained his activity through two injury reports this week, with Wednesday's version potentially clearing up his status for Thursday's game versus the Bears. Even if he suits up, though, he may split work with the Lions' other tight ends for a second straight contest. In this past Sunday's loss at Washington, Hockenson received 33 of 74 offensive snaps, while Jesse James handled 32 and Logan Thomas got 28.
Nov 25, 2019
LP on practice estimate
Hockenson (shoulder) is listed as a limited participant on Monday's practice estimate, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson dealt with this injury leading up to Week 12's loss to the Redskins, and he appeared to be held back, logging a season-low 33 offensive snaps and his first game without a catch. Since the 22-year-old is still expected to practice this week, he doesn't appear to be in jeopardy of missing Thanksgiving Day's matchup against the Bears at this time.
Nov 24, 2019
Suiting up Week 12
Hockenson (shoulder) is listed as active Sunday at Washington.
ANALYSIS
In the same game in which he suffered a concussion Week 4 against the Chiefs, Hockenson fell hard on his right shoulder while attempting to hurdle a defender. He didn't miss any game action due to the Lions' ensuing bye, but his status for Sunday's game came into question Saturday, when he curiously was added to the injury report with a shoulder injury. Hockenson will be available to the offense but may yield reps to fellow tight ends Jesse James and Logan Thomas.
Nov 23, 2019
Dealing with shoulder injury
Hockenson has a shoulder injury and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Redskins.
ANALYSIS
The shoulder injury is a recent development as Hockenson wasn't present on the injury report all week, leaving his status for Sunday firmly up in the air. Jesse James and Logan Thomas would see increased work at tight end should Hockenson be unable to face Washington.
Nov 6, 2019
Avoids injury report
Hockenson wasn't listed on the Lions' injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson was removed during the fourth quarter of this past Sunday's game at Oakland to be evaluated for a concussion. While Hockenson passed all neurological tests, coach Matt Patricia told Justin Rogers of The Detroit News afterward that the tight end had the breath taken out of him. The hit from Raiders safety Erik Harris was enough to keep Hockenson sidelined Sunday, but didn't result in any sort of designation on the Lions' initial Week 10 practice report. Hockenson thus can prepare in earnest for a Bears defense that has conceded 8.2 yards per target and 6.5 receptions per game to tight ends this season.
Nov 4, 2019
Dodges concussion
Head coach Matt Patricia said Hockenson (back) was hit in the back and it took the breath out of the tight end, but Hockenson is not dealing with a concussion, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson took a hard hit from Raiders safety Erik Harris on the final drive of the game during Sunday's 31-24 loss to Oakland. The rookie had to leave the field to be checked for a head injury, but Hockenson apparently was clear of concussion symptoms, which is especially great news for someone who was just treated for a concussion over Detroit's Week 5 bye thanks to another hit he took late during the Lions' Week 4 loss to Kansas City. Hockenson's level of participation in practice Wednesday will be more telling of the tight end's availability for Week 10 in Chicago, but it seems like Hockenson should be able to play.
Oct 11, 2019
Logs full practice Friday
Hockenson (concussion) was listed as a full participant on Friday's estimated injury report, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson has yet to clear the protocol for head injuries, but this development is the best sign yet that a visit to an independent neurologist is imminent. Once he gets past that final hurdle, he'll be cleared to play Monday in Green Bay. On the other hand, if he doesn't get approval to return, the Lions again will rely on Jesse James and Logan Thomas to man tight end.
Sep 29, 2019
Gets carted off field
Hockenson (undisclosed) was carted off the field during Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hockenson landed hard on his right shoulder on an attempted hurdle attempt in the third quarter, laying on the turf for some time before stirring and walking to the cart. The nature of his injury has yet to be released by the Lions, but if he doesn't return, he'll end Week 4 with three catches (on three targets) for 27 yards and one touchdown.
