Reverts to reserve role Week 8
Simpson played 22 snaps (10 on defense, 12 on special teams) without showing up on the box score otherwise during the Ravens' 30-16 win over the Bears on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Simpson started at inside linebacker in Weeks 5 and 6 and accumulated 19 total tackles, including 1.5 sacks, over that span. However, the 2023 third-rounder returned to a reserve role and special-teams contributor in Week 8 due to the return of Roquan Smith. Simpson could return to a starting role against the Dolphins on Sunday if Teddye Buchanan is not cleared to play due to a calf injury.

Totals nine tackles in loss
Simpson recorded nine tackles (four solo), including 0.5 sacks, during the Ravens' loss versus the Rams on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Simpson got the start at linebacker for the second straight week as Roquan Smith remained sidelined with a hamstring injury. Simpson ended up matching Teddye Buchanan for the most tackles on the team, bringing his total on the season up to 49 (23 solo). He will likely return to a reserve role Week 8 versus the Bears, as Smith is expected to return following the team's upcoming bye.

Career-high 10 tackles in loss
Simpson registered 10 tackles (four solo), including 1.0 sacks, during Sunday's 44-10 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Simpson made his second start of the season at inside linebacker due to the absence of Roquan Smith (hamstring). Simpson was on the field for 66 of 70 defensive snaps (94.3 percent) and logged double-digit tackles for the first time in his three-year NFL career. The 2023 third-rounder also recorded his first sack of the season late in the third quarter after taking down C.J. Stroud for a nine-yard sack. Simpson is up to 21 tackles (11 solo) through the first five games of the regular season.

Loses starting job in 2024
Simpson finished the 2024 regular season with 73 tackles (40 solo), including 1.5 sacks, four pass defenses and one fumble recovery across 17 games.
ANALYSIS
Simpson started the regular season as the Ravens' second starting inside linebacker alongside Roquan Smith. Simpson was fairly productive over Baltimore's first 11 games, accumulating 65 tackles (34 solo) over that span. However, his defensive snap count took a noticeable dip in Week 12, which coincided with more playing time for Malik Harrison and Chris Board. Simpson was completely out of the Ravens' inside linebacker rotation following the Week 14 bye, and he was limited to special teams during Baltimore's two-game postseason run. The 2023 third-round pick will use the offseason to re-tool his skillset and look to earn his starting job back for the 2025 campaign.

Season-high in tackles Sunday
Simpson recorded nine total tackles (seven solo), including 1.0 sacks and an additional tackle for loss, while also defending one pass in Sunday's 41-10 win over the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
The second-year linebacker from Clemson has continued to improve in his first season as a starter, with the best game of his career coming in Week 9. Simpson played 100.0 percent of Baltimore's defensive snaps for just the second time this season and was all over the field, recording one of five sacks on Bo Nix and finishing as team's second-leading tackler. Expect Simpson to continue starting alongside Roquan Smith as part of the Ravens' top inside linebacker duo ahead of Thursday night's matchup against the Bengals.

Brings pressure in Week 1 loss
Simpson tallied five tackles (two solo), a half-sack and one pass defensed during Thursday's 27-20 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Simpson played 70 percent of defensive snaps Week 1, which is a larger workload than he handled at any point in his rookie season last year. The 2023 third-round pick is worth monitoring in all IDP formats, considering the value that Baltimore's starting inside linebacker position has proven capable of providing. Simpson will look to take advantage of a plus matchup against the Ravens in Week 2.

In line for major role
Simpson is expected to start next to Roquan Smith at inside linebacker for the Ravens this season, Giana Han of The Baltimore Banner reports.
ANALYSIS
Simpson only played 46 snaps on defense during his rookie campaign in 2023, but he did manage to record a sack and recover a fumble while doing so. The departure of Patrick Queen to the Steelers left a hole next to Smith at linebacker, and the Clemson product appears to be the leading candidate to fill it. With expectations of earning the role, the second-year pro has been studying tape of Queen, while also forming a tighter bond with Smith. According to head coach John Harbaugh, "I've definitely seen Trent take that jump this year. He's flying around, man. He's running. He's making plays. He's confident. He's a quick learner."

Cleared to return versus Rams
Simpson (concussion) was a full participant in Friday's practice and does not carry an injury designation ahead of Sunday's game against the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Simpson missed the last three games after sustaining a concussion in Week 10 against the Browns. His return will bolster the Ravens' inside linebacker depth behind starters Roquan Smith and Patrick Queen.

Returns to practice Wednesday
Simpson (concussion) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice session, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Simpson sustained a concussion in Week 10 against the Browns and missed the next two games. His full participation in Wednesday's practice is a good sign he's on track to return for Sunday's game against the Rams.

Missing another week
Simpson (concussion) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's game against the Chargers, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old linebacker was able to log a limited practice session Wednesday, but he recorded DNPs both Thursday and Friday, so it's no surprise that he'll be inactive Sunday. Simpson has appeared in 10 games for Baltimore thus far, recording three total tackles and primarily playing on special teams.

Ruled out for Thursday
Simpson (concussion) is officially out for Thursday's Week 11 game versus the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Simpson was hurt while working on kickoff coverage during Sunday's loss to Cleveland, and he remains in the NFL's five-step concussion protocol. His absence Thursday will be most felt on special teams, as he's played just one defensive snap over three games since Week 7. Simpson's next chance to suit up will come Sunday, Nov. 26 against the Chargers.

Remains sidelined Tuesday
Simpson (concussion) remained sidelined for Tuesday's practice.
ANALYSIS
Simpson was concussed in last Sunday's Week 10 loss to the Browns and faces an extreme uphill battle to be cleared in time for Thursday night's quick turnaround against the Bengals. He's played just 15 defensive snaps this season but is a fixture on special teams for Baltimore.

Won't return Sunday
Simpson (concussion) has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Browns, Jonas Shaffer of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Simpson sustained the injury on kickoff coverage. Given he's in concussion protocols, Shaffer notes that it'll be an uphill battle for Simpson to be available for Week 11 against the Bengals on Thursday night.

Practicing once again
Simpson returned to practice Monday after tending to a soft tissue injury, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Simpson had been out with the injury since Aug. 4, but he'll now be able to return to the field. Selected in the third round of the 2023 Draft, the Clemson product will get back to work to earn a role in the Ravens' linebacker corps.

Battling soft tissue injury
Coach John Harbaugh said Simpson is dealing with a "soft tissue" injury and could miss some time, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The third-round rookie out of Clemson is expected to open his NFL career as the top linebacker reserve behind Roquan Smith and Patrick Queen.

Landed by Baltimore in third round
The Ravens selected Simpson in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, 86th overall.
ANALYSIS
It's not obvious why Simpson fell this far -- he seemed like a fine selection as high as the second round -- but this looks like a solid pick for Baltimore. The Clemson product has 4.43 speed at 6-foot-2, 235 pounds, and in college he showed the ability to play the edge surprisingly well for a player of his frame, which is more commonly seen in off-ball linebackers. Simpson might be able to displace Patrick Queen in time.
