Bagent and Case Keenum will compete for the backup quarterback job behind Caleb Williams during training camp and the preseason, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.

Bagent worked with the third-string skill players during Wednesday's practice, but Cronin relays that the third-year quarterback will likely swap with Keenum and serve as the QB2 on Thursday. After starting in five games in 2023, Bagent spent the entire 2024 campaign as Chicago's backup behind Williams, with the former playing 13 snaps across four regular-season games.

Bagent appeared in four games for the Bears in 2024, playing 13 snaps and completing two of two passes for 11 yards.

Bagent had a five-game stretch as the starting quarterback in 2023 for Chicago, completing 65.7 percent of his passes with a 3:6 TD:INT. Unless the Bears bring in competition, he should remain Caleb Williams' backup. Bagent will be entering the last year of his contract in 2025.

Bagent played four snaps and completed his lone pass attempt for a six-yard gain in Sunday's 38-13 loss to the 49ers.

The second-year quarterback made his third appearance of the season Sunday, with all having come at the tail end of blowout wins or losses with starter Caleb Williams having thus far enjoyed good health during his rookie campaign. Even with the 4-9 Bears on the cusp of being eliminated from playoff contention, don't expect Bagent to get any starts over the final four contests while Chicago remains committed to Williams as its present and long-term solution under center.

Brett Rypien, Bagent's competition to serve as the primary backup to first overall pick Caleb Williams, saw the bulk of playing time in the weather-shortened game and excelled in a three-touchdown performance, so Bagent will likely have to perform well in any more extensive action he may see the remainder of preseason to ensure he keeps his presumptive lead in the job battle.

Bagent didn't see the field in the Bears' 17-9 loss to the Packers on Sunday.

When Justin Fields missed time in Weeks 6-10, Bagent served as Chicago's starting quarterback. In five games, he completed 94 of 143 passes (66 percent) for 859 yards with a 3:6 TD:INT. During the offseason, the team will determine if the rookie will continue to serve as their backup quarterback. If the team chooses to keep him in a similar role, Bagent is under contract with the Bears for two more seasons.

Bagent (illness) has no injury designation ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers.

The rookie quarterback out of Shepherd missed Chicago's first two practices this week with an illness, but after a full session Friday, it seems as if he's moved past the issue. Bagent is expected to continue serving as the Bears' No. 2 QB behind Justin Fields in Week 18.

Bagent (illness) did not participate at practice Wednesday.

It's not clear what kind of ailment Bagent has or how severe it might be at this point. If he's not able to get back to practice Thursday or Friday, he'll likely end up sidelined for Week 18.

Bagent mostly played the role of game manager, with his longest completion of the night a 16-yard connection with DJ Moore. The rookie once again unsurprisingly focused on Moore and Cole Kmet the most in terms of his targets, and he also completed six safe passes to running backs Roschon Johnson and D'Onta Foreman. Bagent has picked up some valuable experience while filling in for Justin Fields (thumb) over the last four-plus games, but the latter could be back under center for a Week 11 divisional road battle against the Lions on Nov. 19.

Bagent is expected to start Thursday's game against Carolina after the Bears listed Justin Fields (thumb) as doubtful on their final injury report, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Bagent arguably has been better for fantasy purposes than he's been for the Bears, rushing for 97 yards and two TDs in three and a half games while completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 6.3 yards per attempt. The problem is that he's turned the ball over eight times (six interceptions, two lost fumbles), though he's at least been able to avoid sacks (five on 115 dropbacks), which have long been Fields' kryptonite. The matchup this Thursday is about as good as one could ask for, with the Panthers ruling out OLB Brian Burns (concussion) and CB CJ Henderson (concussion) and listing both starting safeties as questionable. They already have a bunch of key defenders on injured reserve, though from a fantasy standpoint they've friendlier to opposing running backs than quarterbacks -- largely because they've frequently had to chase deficits and have faced the second fewest pass attempts in the league (27.6 per game). The Bears, of course, are less likely than most other teams to blow the Panthers out of the water

Bagent completed 18 of 30 passes for 220 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions in the Bears' 24-17 loss to the Saints on Sunday. He also rushed eight times for 70 yards and lost a fumble while recovering another.

As has been the case in each of his appearances this season, Bagent certainly had his moments, including as a runner. The undrafted rookie also showed his inexperience on multiple occasions, however, with his first interception leading to a game-tying touchdown for the Saints in the opening period. Bagent did partly make up for the turnovers with 18- and nine-yard scoring tosses to Cole Kmet, and it now remain to be seen whether he'll be called on for at least one more start in a Thursday night Week 10 home matchup against the Panthers or if Justin Fields (thumb) will be ready to return to action in that contest.

Coach Matt Eberflus said Monday that Bagent will start Sunday's game at New Orleans, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.

At the same time, Eberflus relayed that Justin Fields remains "week-to-week" but may be able to mix into drills this week, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Since taking over for Fields in the middle of Week 6 against the Vikings, Bagent has completed 56 of 80 passes for 477 yards, one touchdown and three interception while also rushing nine times for 27 yards and two more TDs across two-plus contests.

Bagent completed 25 of 37 pass attempts for 232 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 30-13 loss to the Chargers. He scored a short rushing touchdown but finished with negative yards on four attempts.

Bagent's Cinderella story lost its luster rather quickly after the undrafted rookie threw a pair of interceptions in what was supposed to be a soft matchup on paper. The 23-year-old was named the starter with Justin Fields (finger) still recovering from a thumb injury, but perhaps we see the Bears' starter back in action against the Saints next Sunday. If not, Bagent figures to be the logical option to start against New Orleans, with infamous backup Nathan Peterman being the only other option on the roster should Fields sit out.

Based on Eberflus' comments, Fields doesn't look as though he'll be available as even an emergency backup, leaving Nathan Peterman in the No. 2 role behind Bagent. The undrafted rookie out of Division II Shepherd managed the game effectively in the Bears' convincing 30-12 win over Las Vegas, completing 21 of 29 pass attempts for 162 yards and a touchdown while adding 24 yards on the ground and committing no turnovers. Since the Bears are likely to rely on a ground-heavy gameplan once again Week 8 while limiting Bagent's opportunities to the throw downfield, the 23-year-old profiles as a low-end fantasy option in leagues that start two quarterbacks or have a QB flex spot available.

Since Justin Fields departed Chicago's Week 6 loss to the Vikings, Bagent has been the leader in the clubhouse to get the nod Week 7 over veteran Nathan Peterman, especially considering the former was active this past Sunday while the latter was not. Bagent stepped in for Fields this past Sunday and completed 10 of 14 passes for 83 yards, no touchdowns and an interception while also losing a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. The Bears have yet to make an official announcement on their No. 1 QB for this Sunday, but the situation should receive some clarity before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff.

This essentially has been the expectation since Monday when coach Matt Eberflus referred to Justin Fields (thumb) as being doubtful. Fields then missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, moving Bagent one step closer to his first NFL start, though Eberflus hasn't confirmed it would be the rookie filling in for Fields rather than journeyman Nathan Peterman. The Bears opened the season with Peterman as their backup QB before switching to Bagent at the beginning of October. The undrafted rookie then committed two turnovers filling in for Fields during Sunday's 19-13 loss to Minnesota, though he also had a rushing TD and completed 10 of his 14 passes (for 83 yards).

Bagent took over for an injured Justin Fields (hand) with 8:07 remaining in the third quarter and completed 10 of 14 passes for 83 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and rushed twice for four yards and a touchdown in the Bears' 19-13 loss to the Vikings on Sunday. He also committed a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.

Bagent's final numbers were certainly acceptable considering his status as an undrafted rookie seeing his first regular-season action. However, his fumble, which came on the second play of his professional career, would end up being the difference in the game, as it was returned 42 yards for a touchdown by Jordan Hicks. Bagent would later bring the Bears to within six points with his one-yard rushing score midway through the fourth quarter, but Chicago wouldn't find the end zone again. The X-rays performed on Fields' injured hand were negative, but if the MRI the quarterback is scheduled for Monday reveals a more serious injury, Bagent could be called on to start in a Week 7 home matchup against the Raiders.

Bagent will be active as the Bears' No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Broncos and is expected to serve as Justin Fields' top backup moving forward, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Rapoport notes that Bagent's move up the depth chart has nothing to do with Fields' standing with the organization amid an 0-3 start to the season; instead, the undrafted rookie has apparently made enough of an impression over his first four weeks of regular-season practices to jump veteran Nathan Peterman on the depth chart. Peterman remains on the 53-man roster but will likely be a healthy inactive for the foreseeable future so long as both Fields and Bagent are available.

Bagent is an undrafted free agent, but the Bears may be more interested in seeing if they can develop him instead of sticking with Peterman, who has NFL experience. Ultimately, this camp battle is expected to determine who is behind Justin Fields and PJ Walker on the depth chart.

He has a steeper learning curve than Division I quarterbacks when it comes to NFL-level defensive speed, but his mindset and physical profile should help him adjust to the stiffer competition.
