Best Anytime Goal Scorer Picks Today

New Jersey Devils’ Nico Hischier (+150)

New Jersey’s Nico Hischier gets a favorable matchup today against a Columbus defense that is allowing the eighth-most goals. Plenty of New Jersey plays will score today against this soft matchup.

Of the various potential Devils goal-scorers, Hischier is a particularly strong investment. Especially with center Jack Hughes injured, he is one of his team’s top goal-scorers, ranking second on his team in goals. His high ranking is largely a product of how he’s been playing most recently.

Hischier enters today’s game in great form, having scored a combined total of five goals in his last five games. One of those goals was a power play goal, indicating the versatile ways in which he can score.

New Jersey Devils’ Dawson Mercer (+220)

With New Jersey facing Columbus’ bottom-feeder goal-scoring defense, it makes the most logical sense to invest in the Devils’ best goal-scorer. Dawson Mercer is currently New Jersey’s leading healthy goal-scorer – center Jack Hughes, who is injured, also has ten goals.

In view of the softness of Mercer’s matchup and his overall quality as a goal-scorer, I find it very surprising to see Mercer listed at +220. It’s not like he’s been in bad form – far from it. In fact, he scored a goal in his last game. That goal was not a matter of luck, either, as he earned it against a Philadelphia defense that is much stronger than the Columbus defense that he’ll encounter today.

With a total of eight shot attempts in his last two games, he is a regular presence in his team’s attack, which means that he always has a good chance to score.

Philadelphia Flyers’ Tyson Foerster (+190)

Philadelphia gets to face a slumping Pittsburgh team that has turned out to be much worse than it seemed to be at the start of the season.

The Penguins’ decline is partly evident in their defense – in fact, they allowed seven goals in their last game. We should invest in Philadelphia players because the Flyers are finding their groove offensively – in their last three games, they’ve scored four, four, and five goals, respectively.

Of the Philly players from which we can choose, Tyson Foerster is a great bet. He co-leads his team in goals, making  him an ideal option even when the Flyers aren’t hot offensively like they currently are. Moreover, his form is great: he regularly scores a goal or two, having done so in three of his last four games and in almost every game in which he’s played this month. He can be counted on to attempt at least one or two shots, which is all he needs to be a reliable goal-scorer.

Sleeper Goal Scorer Picks Today

Winnipeg Jets’ Jonathan Toews (+475)

The fact that Winnipeg is facing Buffalo creates great value in long-shot goal-scorer picks because goal-scorers who are generally weaker will have a great opportunity to score when they face a weak defense, as Buffalo is allowing the third-most goals. Playing at home doesn’t help the Sabres – in their last home game, they gave up five goals.

Jonathan Toews has a great chance to score today because he consistently gets over 15 minutes of ice time and one or two shot attempts. His skating volume and shooting volume are comparable to players who score more goals, but he can score just as well when the matchup is right. He scored against Vancouver’s 11th-worst goal-scoring defense, for example. One must expect similar success against the Sabres.

Anaheim Ducks’ Ryan Strome (+650)

Anaheim’s Ryan Strome seems to be glued to high-scoring games. The last four games in which he’s played saw a total of seven, eight, or nine goals.

There is, in this sense, plenty of space for him to be a goal-scorer. In any given game, it’s obviously not always going to be only the top goal-scorers who score. When more goals are scored, there are more opportunities for lesser-known players to score goals. Anaheim will score plenty of goals against a St. Louis defense that allows the third-most goals.

Strome is a good bet because he consistently gets one or two shots off in a given game – he attempted as many as four shots in November. He’s already scored once. Based on every somewhat full season in which he’s participated, he must be expected to start accumulating more goals.
